EDUCATION WEEK
Leading the way in Christian care As the oldest parent controlled Christian school in Victoria, Maranatha Christian School has always been a leader in providing high quality Christian education. With its focus on high academic outcomes, genuine student care and opportunity for students to serve by using their God-given skills and talents, Maranatha graduates can be found across Victoria contributing to and building a better society. Maranatha continues to lead Christian education in a number of innovative ways to help students become the leaders of tomorrow. In July, Maranatha Christian School will be hosting a conference called Developing Christian Thinkers, the first of its kind in Australia. The conference will feature keynote speakers from across Australia and include workshops for staff to apply the skills they have learned. The conference builds on the leading work the school is undertaking in Christian education by combining its Christian perspective with Teaching for Understanding, a teaching methodology designed at Harvard University. Maranatha is passionate in its belief that for students to be successful in an ever-changing world, they need to develop the skills to think critically and in a Christian way about the world. In this way, by being good citizens, business owners, employees, and leaders, they help shape the future for our society.

When to fold it
Five guiding principles of success.
The first choice for a bright future
1226200-19-16
St John’s Regional College has been the first choice for Catholic secondary schooling in Dandenong for more than 50 years. The safe, encouraging and challenging environment at St John’s allows students to grow and succeed spiritually, academically and emotionally. Curriculum and co-curriculum programs are designed to ensure the highest possible quality of learning experience and a sense of belonging. Every facet of St John’s, both in and out of the classroom, is built upon five guiding principles: faith, learning, integrity, service and community. These guiding principles are reflected in the actions and behaviour of both teachers and students. St John’s aims to provide an educational program which develops the whole person – the spiritual, social and physical as well as the academic. From the STEP Program in Year 7, which focuses on transitioning students from primary
school to secondary school, through to the wide range of VCE and VET subjects, VCAL and enrichment programs all students are able to find their place at St John’s. Along with a strong emphasis on English, mathematics and the sciences the college has dynamic and growing programs for the arts, sport and recreation, technology and hospitality. As a co-educational Catholic college St John’s focuses on helping students find the right path and place within the school community and out in the world. St John’s Regional College is a community in which learning, self-discipline, responsibility and connectedness are fostered, valued and encouraged, allowing students to grow into productive, valuable members of the wider community. St John’s Regional College is at 5-11 Caroline Street, Dandenong. Phone 9791 3366.

A diverse range of opportunities Located in the heart of Endeavour Hills and within walking distance of the shopping centre and library, the neighbourhood centre may be one of the area’s best kept secrets. The Endeavour Hills UnitingCare Neighbourhood Centre (EHUNC) is a not-for-profit adult learning centre that delivers a diverse range of low cost classes including English, computer, art, craft and recreational exercise. It also has children’s services such as occasional care, three-year-old pre-kinder and after school activities. Manager Bev Lamont said: “Even though the centre is small, we aim to provide a caring, nurturing, learning environment open to all members of the community. “We provide classes and activities that are innovative and applicable to a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds. “Many of the people who come to the centre enjoy the friendly atmosphere created by the welcoming staff and talented, caring teachers. “Our participants make meaningful friendships that go beyond the classroom. “Some of our friendship groups, like the knitting group and patchwork group, share their love of craft to the greater community by donating hundreds of handmade items to charity each year.” This year the neighbourhood centre has received funding from the City of Casey to deliver free computer and iPad classes for seniors. It also has Victorian State Government funding to hold low-cost English classes for migrants who are permanent residents. More information about any of the classes and activities can be found on the neighbourhood centre website at www.ehunc.org.au or phone 9700 3789 to have a term program posted out.

Get a bargain at Ermha’s op shop Ermha Op Shop has provided second hand treasures to the local community for the past 34 years. It is renowned for good quality regular donations that are snapped up by the locals almost as quickly as they are put on display. With its high ceilings light and bright surrounds, quality stock and friendly atmosphere it is well worth dropping in. The Ermha organisation was originally started by volunteers and carers at the op shop to raise funds to provide community mental health programs, education, service linkage and client material aid assistance to those in need. A dedicated team of 28 volunteers continue to manage the daily operations of the op shop today. This op shop is full of weird and wonderful fashions from many different cultures, designer one-offs, shoes, accessories, jewellery gems, vintage treasures, bric-a-brac, fabulous books, DVDs, music, fabric, haberdashery, toys, and an array of other household items. If visitors ask the volunteers very nicely they will also escort them into the warehouse to check out the wide selection of furniture. Shoppers should remember to look at the $1 bargain clothing rack that is always bursting at the seams with new stock. Surprise half prices sales are held throughout the year so it is well worth shoppers dropping in if they are in the neighbourhood to say ‘hi’ to the friendly volunteers and grab a bargain. Anyone can contribute by donating their preloved clothing or goods directly to the Ermha Op Shop during business hours or arrange a pick-up by calling 9546 2151. Sending mum’s flowers A Keysborough business brought smiles to thousands of mums on Mother’s Day. Commercial nursery Karinga sent 150,000 chrysanthemums to supermarkets and other stores across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Owner Roy Schirmer said the blooms were naturally in season during autumn and could last for weeks indoors and would flower again next year if planted in a garden. Cast off for cash By RUSSELL BENNETT Bangholm man Mark Ratchford sure knows how to make one hell of a splash. The qualified skipper and diehard fisherman will depart the Melbourne Boat Show on 19 June to circumnavigate Tasmania and mainland Australia – over 16,500 kilometres – and fish as he goes, raising much-needed funds for the Cancer Council before ultimately returning in November. That’s one man, one boat and 148 days of fishing in what will be one of the biggest challenges of its kind ever undertaken. His aim - through his organisation ‘Fish For Life’ and a tireless organising committee – is to raise between $500,000 and $1,000,000. In all facets of his life, Mark has seen people
he’s cared deeply about – from professional mentors such as Mel Meyer from Dandenong’s Meyer Timber; to family friends; to infant children of family friends – lose their battles to cancer. It has affected Mark so deeply that the man who drives interstate trucks during the week and runs fishing charters on weekends has found a way to combine two of his biggest passions – raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer, and hitting the open water. “I’ve just seen so many people touched by the disease, and so many good people lose their lives,” Mark said. “I woke up one morning and said to my wife: ‘I want to do something – something big’. So, Mark has harnessed all the connections he’s built through his time in the transportation
and fishing industries to make his dream a reality. He’s had his boat and its engine donated, as well as countless other huge donations from other groups and businesses along the way. But his calls for help won’t stop there. Not by a long shot. There are 90 stops around Australia where the Fish For Life boat will dock, with 80 fundraising events along the way. Mark and the committee have opened up two spots on the boat for 36 legs around the country. For a donation, people can take up a seat for anywhere between one day and 10 days’ fishing and fundraising. “The whole committee wants to be a part of helping people survive,” he said. “Our angel wings on the side of the boat are fantastic as well.
“The way I look at it, I’ll be traveling with a guardian angel. People do a $50 or more donation and they get their loved one’s name on the side of the boat and it goes on to a page on our website where they can put a picture of them and a story about them.” Mark, his family and the Fish For Life committee just want to do as much as possible for as many people as they can. “I just wanted to do something to help,” he said. I’ve worked for myself nearly all my life and I just want to try and give a bit back. “If there’s something out there on the verge of making a big difference, we’d like to contribute to that (financially). We want to make as much of an impact as possible.” To learn more, or to get involved by donating or pledging support, visit fishforlife.org.au.

Brothers were very good news What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at central Dandenong’s Ewart Lane, named for the family behind a popular local business.
WHAT’S IN A
NAME
EWART Lane was named after Ewart’s Newsagency and Stationery Supplies - once a prominent newsagent in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. The store on this site - between Walker Street and the Vanity Court Arcade – had operated as a newsagency and stationary supplier for several decades before David Eward bought it in 1919. The long, narrow shop was to the left of Tharle Brothers Butchers and directly between De Lorenzo’s Fruit Shop and Trewin’s Bakery. The two-storey building would have been among the first of the new brick structures built in Dandenong, and would have replaced one of the many single-fronted, single-storey timber buildings that formed what was then the onestreet country town.
Ewart’s Newsagency and Stationery Supplies backed onto the lane that now bears the family name and was operated by brothers Norman and Charlie Ewart. During the 1930s and ‘40s it was the only newsagent in Dandenong. It sold books, photo frames, leather goods, fountain pens and writing cases, and was especially popular around Christmas. Ewart’s was the place to go to book tickets to shows, collect magazine subscriptions, and even hand in lost items such as umbrellas, watches or wallets in the hope of receiving a reward. John Ewart is Norman and Charlie’s nephew.
John, Ruth and Catherine Ewart look at signage in Ewart Lane. 143393 Picture: ROB CAREW He said they moved to Dandenong from Brighton in the 1920s and that there were four brothers in all. “Alan had the menswear store not far from there,” he said. “My father was Frank and he was the youngest of the four brothers. Frank was a banker.”
Looking Back
Norman was the eldest brother and died in 1954. “The funeral procession was the whole length of Lonsdale Street,” John said. He said the brothers would have known most Dandenong residents. “In those days it was a small country village rather than a big suburb like it is now,” he said. “There was nothing much between Cheltenham and Dandenong.” Charlie and Norman had no children. Alan had a daughter, Doris, and a son named Russell. “After Norman died Charlie kept the newsagency going. I think Russell helped him with that,” John said. John isn’t sure what happened to the business after Charlie passed away. “But I think whoever took it over might have kept Russell’s son on for a little while,” he said. 100 years ago 6 May 1916 To the Editor Sir, We, the undersigned members of the Red Cross Committee, wish to answer the criticism of us by the president of the shire. 1. The certain clique Cr Pearson mentions are those who are all that remains of our original committee of 23, and who were reelected at our annual meeting at which every denomination and class were invited. We have worked to the best of our ability as far as our domestic ties would allow and during our term of office, the workers will vouch for our presence in the room. 2. Cr Pearson says that owing to the resignation of the senior vice-president he was reluctantly compelled to close the room on Tuesday 28 March for about two hours,
until his wife as vice president was able to take charge. Perhaps Cr Pearson has forgotten that he threatened - at the committee meeting on the previous Thursday 23 March and before the senior vice president has resigned - that he would close the Red Cross room if we did not give his wife the positon of president. Senior vice president Lucy A Veal, Nellie Abbott, Lillie Langley, Constance Collin, Isabel Talbot, and honourable secretary Ella Hayman.
50 years 5 May 1966 Hail of Bullets Passers by in Langhorne Street the other day looked for spots to shelter from a hail of bullets as ‘cops’ raced in and out of a building
pointing pistols and sub-guns. Then it started to rain and cops, fugitive and sundry background characters adjoined to a nearby coffee lounge. The action was a segment of Crawford Productions’s Homicide called The Boy from Anywhere, which is due for screening on 5 July. Dandenong people will probably recognise faces and places when the film is shown.
20 years 13 May 1996 ‘Imports’ boost workers’ pool Two thirds of Greater Dandenong’s workforce is unqualified and most of its white collar workers are “imported” from other suburbs. Almost half of the population was born overseas and are mostly from Asia. The population is rapidly ageing, with the
over-65 category expected to jump from nine per cent in 1991 to 21 per cent in 2011.
5 years 9 May 2011 Cruisin’ on Lonsdale Lonsdale Street’s redevelopment is officially complete, much to the relief of motorists and traders. About 600 metres of the street has been redeveloped as part of VicUrban’s Revitalising Central Dandenong project. “From a tired, congested traffic thoroughfare, this main street is in the final stages of becoming a tree-lined boulevard with wider granite paved footpaths, improved lighting and more pedestrian-friendly crossings.” - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Judge thanked for ban By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A man smiled and uttered “thank God, yes” as a court slapped him with a five-year intervention order to protect his ex-partner and her two children. Bashkim Gashi, 33, was accused of twice choking the ex-partner in her home in defiance of an earlier full intervention order. At the time he was serving a community corrections order for threatening to kill a mechanic who he believed was having an affair with his expartner. The strangulation incidents dramatically increased the risk of a future homicide or further serious harm, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted at the 2 May hearing. In a sentence indication, the magistrate offered Gashi an 18-month jail term – with a six-month non-parole period – if the accused pleaded guilty to all charges.
The offences included disqualified driving, assault, intentionally causing injury as well as criminal damage for allegedly shattering a glass cake holder at a Narre Warren kebab outlet. Gashi had pushed the holder on the floor after complaining that the food he’d consumed was frozen and demanded free chips. During a police interview over the incident, he showed no remorse and made jokes, the court was told. Gashi was accused of six breaches of an intervention order since October by attending the expartner’s Noble Park house. On one occasion, Gashi allegedly threw a glass against a wall, head-butted the victim’s face and nose and pushed her backwards causing her head to hit the wall, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Steyn told the court. The victim believed her nose was broken and

she’d been in pain for two months following the incident. In April, Gashi allegedly pushed the ex-partner into a glass sliding door, grabbed her by the neck and tightened until she couldn’t breathe, the court was told. She was lifted off the ground and her nose was bitten progressively harder and thought part of her nose had been bitten off. On 24 April, the ex-partner was washing her hands in a bathroom when Gashi dragged her out by the throat and put a hand over her mouth. Gashi’s lawyer said the accused pleaded guilty to the driving and criminal damage charges but contested the recent family violence-related offences. Gashi rejected the sentence indication and elected to contest the charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 31 May.
An out-of-control car crushed a man against his own vehicle - in front of his eight-year-old son. Police are appealing for witnesses to the hit-run incident, which occurred in Egan Road, Dandenong South, about 6.30pm on Wednesday 20 April. A silver Holden sedan was seen travelling at high speeds before it lost control and slammed into the victim’s parked car just as he was entering it. The man had put his son into the back seat moments earlier. The boy was not injured but his father was taken to Dandenong Hospital with serious leg and hip injuries. The Holden’s driver was seen fleeing the scene and was described as a Caucasian man aged in his forties with a medium build. He was wearing a black T-shirt and cream-coloured trousers.
Thieves pinch excavator Police are searching for thieves who towed a $90,000 excavator from a work site in Eddison Road, Dandenong South, about 2.30am on Sunday 10 April. The eight-tonne Takeuchi-brand excavator was subsequently located in Menzies Creek. It was previously seen on the back of a purple five-tonne tow truck. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Tree crushes van A large pine tree has crushed a caravan in Dandenong South, trapping a man by his wrist. CFA crews were called to a South Gippsland Highway address about 1.50pm on Tuesday 3 May to reports of two people trapped inside the van. It took them just five minutes to get the pair out, but they had to use a chainsaw to free one man’s wrist.

There’s been tough times but Kelly sees the end Kelly Cairns wouldn’t be where she is today without The Smith Family. The Narre Warren 21-year-old received motivation and empowerment through the Learning for Life program from about grade six. Thanks to the support she’s done what her parents and older siblings couldn’t - she finished year 12 and went on to complete a bachelor of zoology and animal science at Deakin University. She’s now an education officer at Myuna Farm in Doveton. “If I didn’t have them, I wouldn’t have been able to go to tertiary education at all,” Kelly said.
“It’s not just the financial side – they help you with everything. “It is actually someone that’s caring and with you every step of the way.” The Smith Family’s Dandenong team covers 817 Learning for Life sponsored students in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. Breaking the cycle of disadvantage is its aim. She and her younger siblings joined the program at her primary school principal’s suggestion. At the time her dad was unemployed and there were six kids in the family. “It means the world when you’re struggling and someone else is out there supporting you,” she said. At age 18 Kelly moved from her then-home in
Noble Park to Geelong to attend university. She finished the final year of her course online after her parents’ financial difficulties brought her home to lend support. “It was very tough. A few times I couldn’t really see the end,” she said. “Having your co-ordinator there on the end of the phone was amazing. “They assure you everything’s going to be OK.” A masters of education is her next goal to extend the work she’s already doing with school groups at Myuna Farm. “I know how much it means for people to get that education and get that skill and start young,” she said.

New voice ready for fun factory By CASEY NEILL Maddison McNamara is swapping the factory floor for the stage. The 21-year-old from Officer appeared on Channel 9 television show The Voice on Sunday 1 May. She’s worked at her dad’s Dandenong South timber finishing business, Top Quality Finish, since 2011. It pays the bills but she’s ready to ditch the sander and cleaning products to pick up a microphone. “Once you finally get to do what you want to do it makes it that much more rewarding.” Maddison belted out an emotion-packed rendition of Gone by Lianne La Havas for her blind audition. She takes the stage with the judges – the Madden Brothers, Jessie J, Delta Goodrem and Ronan Keating – sitting in large red chairs with their backs to her. “At the start I was just freaking out because it was halfway through my audition and no-one’s turned yet,” she said. The Madden Brothers were the first to turn around after she sufficiently wowed them with her soulful vocals. “My instant reaction then was ‘I’m through, I don’t care what happens now, I’m happy’,” she said. The other judges followed suit. “To get four chairs was just the best feeling ever,” she said. She chose to join the Madden Brothers’ team so will receive coaching from the pair throughout her time in the competition. “When they turned around I felt an instant connection with them,” she said. Maddison had been practicing Gone for the past 18 months. “My singing teacher from my university actually showed me the song and it took me a while to actually listen to it, but once I did I fell in love with it,” she said. “I connect to the song and I sing it well.” She was studying a bachelor of music at the Australian Institute of Music in Melbourne but
Budding singer Maddison McNamara. has put it on hold to complete an advanced diploma for now. “I definitely want to take it onto the big stage. I want to be a recording artist and I definitely want to be an influence to children and to other singers who want to live the dream,” she said. “A couple of years ago I did a trip to Cambodia for Schoolies.
“Once I experienced that and saw how kids at that age have no families and they have no money and they don’t have education.” Maddison hopes The Voice will provide her with the exposure she needs to turn her passion into a career. “I’ve just been performing my whole life, since the age of five,” she said.
The show’s battle rounds are next, where Maddison will belt out a song against a team mate to keep her place, and live performances will f ollow. “The thought of thousands and thousands of people is daunting, but this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, you have to get used to it,” she said.

Age study tour VIETNAMESE Government ministers and World Health Organisation representatives have toured a Keysborough aged care residence. Arcare Keysborough hosted the eight-member delegation on Monday 2 May. Vietnam is entering an ‘ageing phase’, with 10 per cent of the population now aged over 60 years old. The country’s government and the World Health Organisation are taking a study tour to learn from international experiences on health and social care needs of the elderly. The visitors to Arcare focused on aged care service delivery models and methods for financing health and long-term care. Arcare CEO Colin Singh said the delegates were interested in viewing the suites and were particularly surprised at their size. “As a country, our house sizes are now among the biggest per capita in the world, and the suites in our aged care communities must reflect our
residents’ expectations when it comes to living space,” he said. “The theatre room and hair salon also provoked a strong reaction from the delegates. “I’d suggest that with both of our countries undergoing similar demographic changes, the Vietnamese are just as concerned with their elderly maintaining their relationships and links to the broader community as Arcare.” The $36 million aged care centre created 100 new jobs when it opened in Stanley Road last year. “We are very excited to open our first aged care residence in the Greater Dandenong region and are looking for other places in the area to invest in as it is one of the most vibrant places to live in Victoria,” Mr Singh said at the time. Peak aged care body Leading Aged Services Australia (LASA) brought delegates from around the country to the facility last October as part of a national LASA conference.

A HILUX stolen from a Dandenong disability service has turned up at a Tynong armed burglary. Thieves ransacked Gateway Industries on Saturday 17 or Sunday 18 April and stole the vehicle. Cardinia CIU Detective Senior Constable Lisa Mitchell said police recovered it on Thursday 28 April following a pursuit through Pakenham and Berwick. The driver, a 27-year-old Hampton Park man, allegedly stole a mower on a trailer from Johnston Court in Dandenong that morning. The Hilux and the trailer were then spotted at a Tynong address about 10am. Sen Const Mitchell said the driver was interrupted during a burglary and produced a long-arm firearm before fleeing. Police caught up to him on the Princes Highway in Pakenham and again followed him in Berwick, where they say he rammed two stationary vehicles at the lights at O’Shea and Clyde roads. The collision caused the trailer’s tyres to burst but the driver continued to drive on the wheel rims. Sen Const Mitchell said witnesses saw him abandon the vehicle on Thompsons Road and run into a nearby paddock. Police gave chase and arrested him a short time later. He was remanded on Friday 29 April to face charges. Police have not yet established whether the driver had stolen the vehicle from Gateway. They appealed for information about a grey Holden Colorado, registration plate ZHT 374, stolen from Tynong. She said a second man went into the property’s garage after the Hilux departed, stole the Colorado and fled. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

A FLASHBACK from councillor Roz Blades caught our eye on Facebook last week. She and her husband Terry married on 3 May in 1969 when she wore a mini dress and sling-back shoes with flowers in her ringlets. He’d put on his best drain pipe suit and had long sideburns. “It was as if there were only two of us in the room,” she said.

GUEST speaker Simon McKeon was caught out by a last-minute venue change for the SEBN industry breakfast on Tuesday 3 May. He told the 120-strong turnout at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale that he’d got there via nearby Highways - the original venue for the Tap into the Talent event. “I don’t know if anyone’s sitting there having breakfast by themselves,” he said.
WORDS fail sometimes, even for criminal defence lawyers. The lawyer represented a man in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court recently who had head-butted a person outside a bowls club, swung a knife at a party-goer, tried to break into two cars and punched holes into his father’s house. Aside from conceding her client had a booze and ice problem, the lawyer said the best explanation was “he had no good explanation”. HERE’S a reminder on how hard it is to be a cop or a paramedic. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that emergency services were called to a young woman behaving irrationally outside a supermarket. She swung a punch at a police officer and repeatedly spat upon, kicked and lashed out at a paramedic as she was restrained in an ambulance. She then bit the police officer before being sedated and taken to Casey Hospital, the ambulance stopping three times on the way due to the woman’s behaviour.
Drivers could take years to slow down

Drivers on Keysborough’s Church Road and Westwood Boulevard are consistently speeding, but slowing them down could take years. Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan asked about the latest speed measurements for the thoroughfares at the Tuesday 26 April council meeting. “I still get complaints from young families concerned about speeding in that area, and inquiries to me have increased since residents have witnessed monitoring on Church Road,” he said. The council’s engineering services director Julie Reid said she’d received the Church Road results the previous week, and that the Westwood Boulevard measurements from last year were still current. She said that 85 per cent of traffic was travelling at or above the 50km/h speed limit.
Ms Reid said the majority of the speeding drivers were travelling below 60km/h. She said the roads had been added to a road safety priority program, but did not rank highly enough to be dealt with in the next year or two. She said her team would continue to monitor the area. “It all comes down to funding and priorities,” she said. Cr Kirwan asked if the number of young families in an area influenced its placing on the priority list. Ms Reid told him that it was not taken into account, and that the severity of the speeding was the most influential indicator. She said that the council could choose to make the area a higher priority. “We don’t have an infinite amount of resources,” she said.

Car attack man is refused bail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SEEMINGLY homeless man who allegedly broke into several cars by throwing rocks through their windows in Dandenong last month has been refused bail. Abdullahi Siyad, 28, had broken three bail orders granted in April, was apparently homeless and been “in and out” of hospital for schizophrenic treatment, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 2 May. Police informant Constable Jesse O’Brien said Siyad had used a tap and go credit card he’d stolen from a car - along with about $40 in change - to buy groceries and cigarettes at a Coles supermarket in Dandenong on 1 May. Soon after police were called to the supermarket car park due to Siyad allegedly harassing customers for money where the stolen credit card’s owner approached officers saying that his card had just been used in the supermarket. A soaking wet Siyad made full admissions to the theft after police found the victim’s goods in his backpack, saying he had offended because he was cold and hungry. He was on three counts of bail at the time including for another alleged theft from a vehicle on 24 April, and for pocketing $57 of credits from a
pokies player’s machine at Dandenong RSL on 4 March. At his police interview, he admitted to using a large rock to smash into a car, then ransacking the vehicle, in Dandenong on 3 April. Siyad used the bounty to purchase drugs to self-medicate for his mental illness. “He offends because he wants to and he has no plans to stop,” Const O’Brien said. “I believe he’s had opportunities to engage with mental health services but he’s been unwilling or unable to engage.” Siyad’s 18 pages of prior convictions included property crime, armed robbery, intentionally causing injury and assaulting police - and 19 counts of failing to appear on bail, the court was told. The accused, representing himself, said he was able to stay with a couple in a flat in Stud Road. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Siyad’s problem had always been not taking medication and having a place to live. “We’d want a lot in place before letting you out of jail.” Siyad was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 16 May.
Kids banned from music lessons TWO children expelled from St Anthony’s Primary School have now been told they cannot attend their private music lessons at the school. Bang Vu said the family were “deprived of a fair go” because students from other schools attended the music program. A letter from parish priest Brian Collins stated: “As our relationship at school has concluded, we ask that you refrain from entering the school
grounds but you remain part of our worshipping community.” Mr Vu said his children were settling into a state school. The parish claimed the family was a threat to the safety and wellbeing of staff and students. Mr Vu denied making threats but said he fought “discrimination” against his children over several years.

Dairy is the big cheese By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG South cheese factory is set to inspire television viewers around the country. Moondarra Cheese will be among 40 businesses profiled on documentary series Industry Leaders on Foxtel. “We’re looking for people who are revolutionising and shaping their industry,” the show’s executive producer Mac Emiantor told the Journal. “The premise of this show is to showcase these people, take a look at their passion, and look at how passion-driven commitment has led to their success.” Moondarra co-owners Matt Freeman and Nick Katis told the Journal they hoped to grow the company’s $17 million turnover to $20 million in the next 12 months. They now produce 2000 tonnes of flavoured cream cheese each year but started when Mr Freeman left Australian Dairy Corporation to start exporting Australian specialty cheeses. He chose a uniquely Aussie name for the company that referenced dairy heartland. “Moondarra is a little area in Gippsland, a Koori word that means lightning and thunder,” he said. Mr Katis was working at Original Juice when the company was sold and in 2002 approached his university mate Mr Freeman about joining Moondarra. “We quickly realised that there wasn’t any money in selling other people’s products,” Mr Freeman said. So in 2004 they started producing their own at a small site in Nunawading with a team of four. “We would buy in the cream cheese and process it,” Mr Freeman said. “We felt for our own future business security that we had to invest in the cream cheese production process.” Moondarra moved to Dandenong South in 2012 and last year built a $5 million cream cheese production plant. “Now we have about 40 full-time staff and another 40 casual staff,” Mr Freeman said. “Our biggest export market used to be Russia, but when the sanctions came on from the inva-
Matt Freeman with the television crew. 152805 sion of the Ukraine, Russia put counter-sanctions on Australia and we lost 300 tonne of volume overnight. “We also do export to Korea, Japan, China, the USA, Canada and New Zealand. “Apart from getting Russia back in the short term, our main growth strategy for export is the USA.” Domestic growth will be in the form of new flavours – maple and pecan, and bacon and par-
mesan – and commercial cream cheese supply possibilities. “One of the greatest joys that we get from this company is that we’ve given 80 people a job, a lot of them local,” Mr Freeman said. “It is a bit of an extension of our families and we like to run it in that way.” The Moondarra episode is due to air on the Aurora channel at 8.30pm on Tuesday 31 May and repeated at 2.30pm on Sunday 5 June.

Crate showcase KIDS can transform trash into art at a mega manufacturing showcase in Dandenong. Dandenong South’s Smart Recycling will use a display at Smart Manufacturing ’16 - Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show to inspire a new generation of artists to see worth in materials that society discarded. Committee for Dandenong (C4D) and its partners are presenting the expo-style event on Tuesday 17 May to promote the region’s capability and capacity. The 35-acre Smart Recycling site was once a tip and has become an unlikely place for artistic inspiration. Artists and designers regularly visit the site to salvage industrial timber packaging waste to be used in their celebrated designs. Smart Recycling managing director Ward Petherbridge said his Smart Kids Zone would feature art and gardening projects using the materials recycled at the site. Kids can get their hands dirty planting herbs to take home using recycled soil and mulch, and
they can combine graphic stencils and bright paints with timber off-cuts. They’ll be able to take home a free model train and truck kit designed by Smart Recycling production manager Loe Hagai. The stand will also showcase past entries from Create from a Crate, a biennial exhibition where woodworkers turn two timber packaging crates into art. Smart Recycling divert 50,000 tonnes of waste annually from landfill through their recycling activities. Mr Petherbridge said enough pallets, crates and other waste timbers to fill the MCG 1.5 times were discarded each year. “To turn this trend around we need to educate a new generation of Victorian decision-makers to understand the importance of recycling,” he said. “Getting creative with waste is a great way to urge young people to be less wasteful and look for the gems in our rubbish.”

Schools sign up for breakfast boost THREE Greater Dandenong schools have officially joined the Breakfast Club. The State Government in April announced 78 new additions to the program, including Carwatha College P-12 in Noble Park, and Dandenong’s Wooranna Park Primary School and Emerson School. One in seven Victorian children arrive at school hungry, affecting their attention spans and ability to learn. The program aims to improve learning and attendance and build connections between families, schools and the community. Carwatha principal Bronwyn Hamilton said the school served breakfast from 8am twice a week. “If you’re learning on a full stomach, learning is much more likely to be successful,” she said. Ms Hamilton said some families were too busy for breakfast in the mornings while other students missed out because times were tough. Ms Hamilton said the canteen was also opening early for students who wanted to buy more.

Able and willing talent By CASEY NEILL Tapping into talent was the hot topic at the latest SEBN industry breakfast. Dandenong-born 2011 Australian of the Year Simon McKeon was the guest speaker at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale on Tuesday 3 May. Bombardier Transportation’s Australian managing director Rene Lalande also spoke to the 120-guest event, and SEBN manager Sandra George made a plea. As the chair of the Greater Dandenong Employment Taskforce she launched The One Per Cent Project. The push ties in with The Doveton Project, unveiled at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards on 12 April. Unemployment in the suburb is more than three times the national average at 12 per cent. “The answer lies in investing in human capital - your commitment to creating jobs, giving the Doveton people more security and building a thriving working class community,” MC James Sturgess said. Ms George said some job-seekers might require education or training, but others might just need a chance to show what they can do. “Target 1 per cent of your workforce to be sourced from people who need a helping hand to get into work,” she said. She said smaller businesses could instead aim to have 1 per cent of their employees lending a hand in teaching language skills, mentoring or hosting work placements. “It’s not just about corporate responsibility,” she said. “The bigger the talent pool we build, the more economical it is to employ from that.” Mr McKeon agreed that giving people at the end of the employment queue a go was a smart business decision.
Guest speaker Simon McKeon. 153696 “Sometimes the talent is hidden,” he said. “The world is a whole lot bigger than just fit and able-bodied people.” Mr McKeon said his older sister has an intellectual disability. His dad gave her a job at his pharmacy in the photo developing lab. “Yes, she was different. Yes, she probably would have struggled getting a job elsewhere,” he said. She worked with seven or eight other women who would often pull Mr McKeon aside and tell
him what a wonderful big sister he had. “One of them even said to me ‘she’s the reason I come to work’,” he said. Mr Lalande said government tenders now required trainees to complete 10 per cent of project hours and disadvantaged workers to complete 2.5 per cent. “They’re not just buying trains. They buy the values that are important to them,” he said. “Everyone can bring something to the table.”
Auto workers skills gear up Auto industry workers, new and old, have received an education boost. Chisholm and ACM Parts in Dandenong announced a new partnership on Wednesday 27 April. It will link in with Chisholm’s South East Automotive Industry Transition Package, established to up-skill and re-skill retrenched automotive supply chain workers. Chisholm’s engineering, technology and trades executive director Andrew Kong said the partnership was unique. “It not only contributes to quality education and training outcomes for students and apprentices entering the job market for the first time, but will also support retrenched workers from areas of the automotive and component manufacturing sector who are seeking to transition into new employment opportunities,” he said. Through the partnership, ACM will also donate a vehicle and parts for Chisholm automotive students to restore as part of their training curriculum. The finished product will be auctioned to fund scholarships for disadvantaged youths eyeing an auto industry through the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation. ACM Parts CEO Mike Kirkman said the partnership was about supporting the next generation of automotive experts. “ACM Parts is committed to working closely with Chisholm in identifying people for possible employment as part of the regional automotive workforce transition program.“ “We value the skills of workers who have spent part of their career building cars and we want to make a place for them in our business.”
Terry King from SMCT receives the Sustainable Development Award from Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak. 153696
Awards recognise smart moves Hilton Manufacturing has continued a successful year with a sustainability award. Greater Dandenong mayor Heang Tak announced the council’s Sustainability Awards winners at a SEBN breakfast at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale on Tuesday 3 May. He said the awards recognised that businesses had a significant role to play in reducing negative impacts on the environment. “Sustainability is not only good for our environment, it’s also good for business,” he said. Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) picked up the Sustainable Development award. Its Clarence Reardon Centre at Springvale Botanical Cemetery has more than 500 solar panels on the roof that last year prevented 150 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Other features include double-glazed windows, rainwater tanks for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation, and more. The category’s other finalists were EPC Pacific for the ATO building in central Dandenong, and Frasers Property for the Tyres 4U Warehouse and
the Astral Pool Distribution Centre. Hilton’s Sustainable Business win came after the company took home Premier Regional Business Award at a Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce gala event last month. A 340-panel solar farm on the Dandenong South factory’s roof tracks the sun, and installing LED lighting has reduced the overall lighting load by 62 per cent. Hilton installed variable drive speed units to reduce air compressor energy consumption, which led to a 50 per cent cut in energy consumption. The other finalists in the category were Wallara Australia, International Chemical Engineering and Lexington Gardens Retirement Village. These two awards followed presentations for Sustainable Home and Garden, Sustainable School and Sustainable Students gongs at the Family Sustainability Festival at Dandenong Market on 21 February. The awards recognised and rewarded the community’s efforts towards a more sustainable environment.

St Kilda footballer Josh Bruce leads the run through the banner. Barry Bradshaw accepts his award with Freddie Deegan from ShineWing Australia and On Tap Hospitality.
Club together By CASEY NEILL Club Noble took out two top awards at a statewide celebration for community clubs. Community Clubs Victoria (CCV) presented 32 awards at a gala night at the Sofitel in Melbourne on Saturday 16 April. Noble Park’s Club Noble was a finalist in seven categories and took home the Club President of the Year for Barry Bradshaw and Best Youth Development Program for Bulls Roar. Judges looked for a president who, over the past year, had volunteered many hours supporting the club and committee, provided strong leadership and demonstrated a strategic approach to the club’s sustainability. The youth development category rewarded fostering youth participation in sports while incorporating skill development and nurturing talent in a safe environment. Mr Bradshaw said Club Noble had worked with Noble Park Junior Football Club to design the Bulls Roar leadership development program,
and it encouraged youths to engage in sports in the local community. “This program is aimed at providing life-skills to the young to help them achieve their full potential at school, in sport, and also life in general,” he said. Mr Bradshaw said more than 700 students had participated in one-hour clinics over the past 12 months. “The program not only gives participants the opportunity to practice various team and individual leadership skills, it also shows them how they can make a difference not only with their team sports, but also at school, home and in the community,” he said. Club Noble’s other finalists included Prabh Singh for the chef award, Barry Moylan for the club official title, Mick O’Toole in the assistant manager/supervisor category, and Mark Hogan for the metro club manager honour. The club’s multicultural netball club project was a finalist for Best Community Support Project.
Footy stars drawcard for dealership Patterson Cheney Toyota is supporting grass roots football for another big year with the Toyota Good for Footy program with Noble Park Football Club on 4 May. This is Patterson Cheney Toyota’s 11th year sponsoring Noble Park Football Club. For more than a decade, the Dandenong dealership has provided financial support for the local football club and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for fans to get up close with AFL stars. This year proves no exception, with Western Bulldogs coach and player Rob Murphy guest appearing for training drills and an exclusive Q and A. So far, more than 130 local football clubs have benefited from the Good for Footy program, receiving over $2.6 million between them thanks to Toyota dealers across the states. This year, Patterson Cheney Toyota promises another big night for the club and supporters. “We are proud to continue our sponsorship with Noble Park Football Club and to be part of their long-running success, which includes over 161 Grand Finals and 60 premierships. “It’s great to see the club evolve and benefit from our relationship over the past decade,” Patterson Cheney general sales manager David Haines said.
St Kilda forward Josh Bruce with young fan Brodie Ferguson. 153129 On the night there are plenty of activities on offer including a dual-lane bungee fun run, bucking footy, haunted house slide, a retro photobooth caravan, plus the chance to run through the club’s banner on the night. The canteen will be open and there is also a sausage sizzle and hot food available on the night. SEN will be broadcasting live crosses throughout the event. SPORT Vic Metro makes its MCG mark By JARROD POTTER AFL VICTORIA YOUTH GIRLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - GRAND FINAL FROM the first bounce, there was only one side that could win. Vic Metro stole the show from Western Australia and the hosts made sure the home of football became its happiest hunting ground yet. It was as clinical a performance as ever seen on the MCG, as the Metropolitan charges left no stone unturned en route to its second consecutive national championship. Taking it to Western Australia straight up the guts, Vic Metro’s Olivia McFawn, Georgia Gee and Tyla Hanks pushed the ball out of the centre. Too long and too direct for the Swans to handle, it flew into the waiting hands of Isabel Huntington and captain Katherine Smith. The Metropolitan mainstays lit up the ‘G and showed the best calibre of Youth Girls’ football seen for a long time. Both girls put their hands up for AFL selection at the upcoming National Women’s League (NWL) draft as they were everywhere throughout the grand final - in particular a staggering four goal second term from Huntington as she racked up five for the game. It wasn’t just forward of the ball the Metro stars shone though. The back end surged at every chance - albeit limited by Victoria’s midfield and forward dominance - as the likes of Dandenong Stingrays’ vicecaptain Jordy Allen, Parkmore footballer Charis Ulu Peniata and Stingrays’ utility Jas Grierson made sure the visitors would remain shut out of the contest. Such was their domination that Western Australia’s handful of forward opportunities barely looked like troubling the goal umpires as Vic Metro wanted to not only win, but do it in emphatic style. But it’s hard to single anyone out every Vic Metro footballer truly held up their end of the bargain. Maddie Prespakis roaming the forward line with two goals, Beaconsfield’s Brooke Struylaart jagging another two to cap off an extraordinary first state campaign as the competition’s leading goalkicker, Deanna Berry throughout the ground, Gemma Lagioia pinpointing passes ... and so on the list could go on throughout the whole side. Not even a 10-goal margin at the final change would give Vic Metro cause for early celebration. Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman told the side to remain respectful, push hard and enjoy the last 15 minutes of an extraordinary campaign. They knuckled down, cleared the ball from Western Australia’s last ditch efforts at scoring and generally kept the foot down until the final siren when the bench erupted and everyone ran onto the field as premiers.
Vic Metro celebrated an AFL Youth Girls National Championships victory with a win on the MCG over Western Australia. 153915 For Western Australia, Courtney Hodder flew the flag all night while Rachel Ashley was serviceable down back. Siekman was without many words after the win - his second in a row as state coach - but wanted to say how immensely amazed and blessed he felt to coach this side and cap off the 2016 championships’ story. “I was just so proud that the girls had the opportunity to play on there and I ensured that my coaches and assistant coaches did all they could to make sure they had that chance,” Siekman said. “They delivered on the biggest stage in the world and with that result - 95 to zero - everything just fitted in perfectly.” Captain Katherine Smith bowed out of Youth
Girls football in her trademark fashion – hardedged, under the packs and splitting the defence with a couple of extraordinary goals. But the skipper takes away more than the medal and the 95-point premiership victory – the Vic Metro spirit and the camaraderie among the group made it a week for Smith to savour forever. “It’s just unbelievable – it’s a dream to play on the ‘G, but to do it with such a great bunch of girls and winning in the end was a huge buzz,” Smith said. “It was an electric feeling and I just can’t describe it. “The girls really delivered on keeping composed and making sure we didn’t get ahead of ourselves – it’s a 60-minute game of football and that’s we needed to continue doing.”

Captain and coach farewelled the Vic Metro ranks in the best way possible - with Siekman moving on with a smile and Smith ageing out of the program after four years in the side. So the celebrations began in the bowels of the MCG, but the last words on a 95-point demolition and three amazing seasons at the helm to an immensely proud Siekman. “As a coach you just can’t be any prouder - I’m almost speechless,” Siekman said. YOUTH GIRLS SCOREBOARD VIC METRO 14.11 (95) WESTERN AUSTRALIA 0.0 (0) Vic Metro Goals: Huntington 5, Hayes 3, Struylaart 3, Prespakis 2, Smith. Best: Huntington, Smith, Allen, Grierson, Hayes.
Dandenong Stingrays vanquish the invading Knights By JARROD POTTER TAC CUP - ROUND 7 TAKING no prisoners at its Shepley Oval fortress, Dandenong smashed through the Northern Knights’ lines and inflicted a 99-point battering. Knights haven’t been slain where they stood at this rate since the last Crusade, but such was the Stingrays’ ferocity that the visiting northern force had little chance from the first bounce onwards. Northern had two bites of the cherry with the wind, sticking with the Stingrays through the first term, but Dandenong made sure it cashed in with it in second. The Stingrays booted its way to a staggering nine-goal term - led by the likes of Tom “Cloud Nine” De Koning (nine goals) - to wither up any chance of the visitors’ victory. De Koning rattled them off in every fashion at ground level, in the air and making his set shots truly count - and put his hand up straight away as a 2017 draft prospect. “He kicked three points last week and was practicing on Thursday night - his dad told me he had a good technique and used to kick them as a kid,” Dandenong Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “It’s more about the opportunity that he got -
he was in front, got a big long reach and he jumps at the footy. Not to be outdone by their taller brethren, Sam Fowler (five goals) added another bag to his haul while Danny Allsop (three goals) and Charlie Martello (two goals) also terrorised the Knights’ defence to help boot another nine in the last term. Myles Poholke, birthday boy Tommy Glen and Dandenong captain Liam McKay made life just as tough through the middle for the visitors as they started most forward rampages from the centre bounce. It wasn’t just the free-wheeling forwards and hard-edged midfielders carving up the Knights though; the defence sowed the seeds of Northern’s defeat from the last line. Reece Piper was in best-on-ground form - going as well as the bloke who drilled nine - as he cannoned kick-ins 70-80m with the wind, as well as working his way up the ground and smashing apart the visiting midfield. He nailed the Knights’ coffin shut with a beguiling run through half-forward, getting past one, two, three Knights and ramming home the goal straight through the uprights. Also holding up the back end were Mason De Wit, Bailey Morrish, Jordan Stewart, Brenton Wells and another young Stingray-on-the-rise
Jake Frawley. Dandenong will head to Wangaratta to battle Murray on Saturday afternoon in a first-versusfourth battle and despite the success, Black said there’s no such thing as a set line-up as every spot in the side is up for grabs. “We get Murray Bushrangers who are a really good team and up at Wangaratta they’re always hard to beat - the good thing about winning games of footy it puts pressure on the list still,” Black said. “We’ve played 35 players this year - which is probably more than what we’ve played - so we can win by 99 points but we’ve got 30 kids who aren’t playing that are putting pressure on these guys so it makes people hungry for spots.” TAC CUP SCOREBOARD DANDENONG 4.1 13.8 15.8 24.10 (154) NORTHERN 3.3 4.5 6.11 7.13 (55) DANDENONG Goals: T. Playing with the right spirit Not even harsh conditions or howling wind could dampen the joy of South East Juniors’ Spirit of Football Round. Players from Pakenham to Parkmore, Tooradin to Timbarra and all points in between donned teal armbands for Friday night and especially freezing Sunday games. That’s a lot of teal tape to put on the arms – with the 24 clubs having nearly 4,500 registered junior footballers. For the South East Juniors though, in conjunction with the Beehive Foundation, the Spirit of Football Round is all about creating the best possible environment for players, coaches, umpires and everyone connected to the national game. “At the start of the year we’d like to instil in all the clubs a sense of what the game should be about,” South East Juniors club development officer Nathan Phillips. “Should be about fair play, coming together and enjoying the national sport as it is. “Make sure the kids grow and develop from the young ones all the way to the senior level and getting that in their minds that they know what’s right and wrong and to respect the opponents.” Thousands of junior footballers in south-east Victoria embraced the armbands and battled hard to play strongwilled, but respectful football. The round creates awareness of good role models, tolerance and sportsmanship among our state’s young athletes and their families and has been a fixture to circle on the junior footy calendar each year. The league handed out over 400 medals across the round awarded by coaches to an opposition player who best represented the fairness and respect of the round.
By MICHAEL FLOYD Blazin’ Bomber set Sandown Park alight to claim the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star. The series brought together eight of the fastest greyhounds in the country to contest a series of match races worth $10,000 each, and Blazin’ Bomber was never threatened to stop the clock in a slick 29.090. The time was a little over a length faster than his qualifying time recorded the previous Sunday which came as no surprise to his trainer, former Test cricketer Darren Pattinson. “I thought he could go a little quicker since it was so windy on Sunday,” Pattinson said. “It’s a little windy tonight, too, but he went as well as he should have gone. “I thought the others would get close to his time - they’re very fast dogs - so to beat them by two or three lengths is a great achievement.” Others included four runners from the Jason Thompson kennel, drawn against each other, as Group 1 winner Dalgetty met Invictus Rapid in match two, and litter brothers Buck Forty and Burn One Down in match three. Never more than a length between Dalgetty and Invictus Rapid throughout their match and in a thrilling run to the line, Dalgetty mustered all of his champion qualities to find the line half a length clear in 29.316. Burn One Down’s brilliant maiden win saw him sensationally backed from $15 into $6 early in the betting for the series and led his more fancied litter bother at box rise. However Buck Forty made full use of his inside draw to rail through the lead at the first turn and open a two length lead. Burn One Down made his move off the back straight and in a thrilling run to the line, Burn

One Down prevailed by a neck in 29.269. It was the second group race win for Blazin’ Bomber following his Cranbourne Puppy Classic
victory last August, in which he defeated a quality field that included Kayda Shae and Dyna Double One.

Blazin’ Bomber claimed the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star at Sandown Park on Thursday.
The National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Basketball Without Borders program will hit Australia for the first time this year, and the Dandenong Stadium will hold the first camp next month. The NBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program will head to Dandenong and Geelong from 23 to 26 June. Basketball Without Borders celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and brings together the top male players born in 1999 from around the Asia Pacific region to learn from NBA and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) players, legends and coaches and to also compete against the best young players in the region. There will also be a girls’ camp for the top female players in the state, as well as a junior NBA camp for local youngsters.
In a statement on the Dandenong Basketball website, Dandenong Stadium CEO Graeme Allen said he was thrilled with the announcement that the local facility would host the event. “This is a major event for basketball in Australia and a coup for Dandenong Stadium and the many basketball participants and followers in Melbourne,” he said. “The NBA held a smaller camp here (at Dandenong Stadium) a few years ago and their return is a resounding acknowledgment of our fantastic facilities here at Dandenong – one of the best indoor basketball facilities in the world. “Players, coaches and legends of the NBA will be in town, supported by many great former NBL coaches and players, to work with and develop some of the best young talent in Australasia, right here in our great facility in Dandenong.” Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) will also be involved in the local event.
Adding another major event to Dandenong Basketball Stadium’s impressive resume – including BIG V pre-season tournament, National Junior Classic, Basketball Australia Junior Championships and the SEABL grand final – the venue will now host an NBA camp. 144027 Picture: ROB CAREW
