EDUCATION WEEK
Leading the way in Christian care As the oldest parent controlled Christian school in Victoria, Maranatha Christian School has always been a leader in providing high quality Christian education. With its focus on high academic outcomes, genuine student care and opportunity for students to serve by using their God-given skills and talents, Maranatha graduates can be found across Victoria contributing to and building a better society. Maranatha continues to lead Christian education in a number of innovative ways to help students become the leaders of tomorrow. In July, Maranatha Christian School will be hosting a conference called Developing Christian Thinkers, the first of its kind in Australia. The conference will feature keynote speakers from across Australia and include workshops for staff to apply the skills they have learned. The conference builds on the leading work the school is undertaking in Christian education by combining its Christian perspective with Teaching for Understanding, a teaching methodology designed at Harvard University. Maranatha is passionate in its belief that for students to be successful in an ever-changing world, they need to develop the skills to think critically and in a Christian way about the world. In this way, by being good citizens, business owners, employees, and leaders, they help shape the future for our society.

St John’s Regional College has been the first choice for Catholic secondary schooling in Dandenong for more than 50 years. The safe, encouraging and challenging environment at St John’s allows students to grow and succeed spiritually, academically and emotionally. Curriculum and co-curriculum programs are designed to ensure the highest possible quality of learning experience and a sense of belonging. Every facet of St John’s, both in and out of the classroom, is built upon five guiding principles: faith, learning, integrity, service and community. These guiding principles are reflected in the actions and behaviour of both teachers and students. St John’s aims to provide an educational program which develops the whole person – the spiritual, social and physical as well as the academic. From the STEP Program in Year 7, which focuses on transitioning students from primary
school to secondary school, through to the wide range of VCE and VET subjects, VCAL and enrichment programs all students are able to find their place at St John’s. Along with a strong emphasis on English, mathematics and the sciences the college has dynamic and growing programs for the arts, sport and recreation, technology and hospitality. As a co-educational Catholic college St John’s focuses on helping students find the right path and place within the school community and out in the world. St John’s Regional College is a community in which learning, self-discipline, responsibility and connectedness are fostered, valued and encouraged, allowing students to grow into productive, valuable members of the wider community. Students discover their best selves MATER Christi Belgrave is a vibrant open entry college for girls, which is easily accessible by dedicated buses and public transport. With modern facilities, fully connected contemporary learning spaces and outstanding results, the college is passionate about girls’ education. “There is less emphasis on competition as the driver for learning. Girls are free to pursue the challenges on offer, whether academic, physical or social, in leadership, in sporting activities or in social justice and community activities,” said principal Mary Fitz-Gerald. When girls consistently witness other girls as role models in all areas they realise there is no limit to what they can do. “From their first day at Mater Christi, students witness other girls as captain of the sports team, SRC leader, physics high achiever, drummer in the rock band or as the lead role in the school production,” she said. The ‘can-do’ energy of young girls is evident right across the beautiful campus set above the Belgrave township. Students can be seen actively engaged in the extensive programs aimed to meet their diverse interests, abilities and learning styles. Contact the college on 9754 6611 to arrange a tour or visit the website to learn more about Taster Days, scholarships and enrolling for 2017 and beyond. The creativity and engineering skills of Mater Christi girls was on show when they won the 2015 University of Melbourne Amazing Spaghetti Machine Contest.

A diverse range of opportunities Located in the heart of Endeavour Hills and within walking distance of the shopping centre and library, the neighbourhood centre may be one of the area’s best kept secrets. The Endeavour Hills UnitingCare Neighbourhood Centre (EHUNC) is a not-for-profit adult learning centre that delivers a diverse range of low cost classes including English, computer, art, craft and recreational exercise. It also has children’s services such as occasional care, three-year-old pre-kinder and after school activities. Manager Bev Lamont said: “Even though the centre is small, we aim to provide a caring, nurturing, learning environment open to all members of the community. “We provide classes and activities that are innovative and applicable to a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds. “Many of the people who come to the centre enjoy the friendly atmosphere created by the welcoming staff and talented, caring teachers. “Our participants make meaningful friendships that go beyond the classroom. “Some of our friendship groups, like the knitting group and patchwork group, share their love of craft to the greater community by donating hundreds of handmade items to charity each year.” This year the neighbourhood centre has received funding from the City of Casey to deliver free computer and iPad classes for seniors. It also has Victorian State Government funding to hold low-cost English classes for migrants who are permanent residents. More information about any of the classes and activities can be found on the neighbourhood centre website at www.ehunc.org.au or phone 9700 3789 to have a term program posted out.

A dedicated team of 28 volunteers continue to manage the daily operations of the op shop today. This op shop is full of weird and wonderful fashions from many different cultures, designer one-offs, shoes, accessories, jewellery gems, vintage treasures, bric-a-brac, fabulous books, DVDs, music, fabric, haberdashery, toys, and an array of other household items. JULIE Cini has a gruelling job – to prepare mums watching their children die. The chief executive and founder of the Hallambased charity Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia has been wise counsel for thousands of families torpedoed by SMA in the past decade. Not many others empathise with the cruel twists of being an SMA parent or patient. Children born with this rare inherited disease progressively lose motor neurons that are the means for crawling, walking, feeding, coughing, swallowing and breathing. This month Ms Cini of Berwick launched a second edition of her self-published book Living Life Legacies. It is an account of how she bounced back from a personal tragedy that many would find unspeakable. Less than three years apart, Ms Cini’s two baby daughters Montanna and Zarlee succumbed to type-one SMA. While pregnant with Zarlee, she lost her partner Ross Brownlaw in a road crash. Ten years on, Ms Cini said she marks her loved ones’ birthdays and anniversaries. She holds brilliant memories but for the rest of the year, she just wants to make a difference. The charity was founded soon after losing Montanna. “So when I see (my daughters) again, I can say I did everything I could for fighting that disease.” She doesn’t sugar-coat the bitterest of pills for any parent. There’s a point when their child’s quality of life has so waned, they have to let their child die. “Emotionally it’s really hard. I can look at a child and know they will be dead in six weeks. “You’ve got to let them down so gently.” Ms Cini tells new families there is hope and
options. Diagnosis is earlier, and overseas research into treatments is promising. There’s more effective treatment that allows kids with type-two SMA to live longer. For those with the more severe type-one, there are emerging clinical injection trials. “There’s a girl in Hallam who after her first round of treatment is doing quite well. She’s still alive at 18 months. “To see that girl lift even just a paper cup and drink from the cup is amazing.” In her latest book edition, Ms Cini outlines coping strategies. Her main advice is that families have to do what they think is best for their child. Don’t blindly follow orthodoxy or others’ examples. Readers – not just parents of SMA kids – regularly tell her that the book is inspirational. Ms Cini’s national charity offers counselling, advice as well as the loan of 30 vital machines that induce coughing so SMA patients can expel infections from colds from their lungs. These machines allow children to stay home or go on family holidays rather than fighting colds in hospital. “That’s the thing I like about my job – seeing families and kids enjoying their life.” Ms Cini suspects there a few type-one families, still in denial, who haven’t been in touch yet. It takes courage for them to make that call, she said. Of her own triple-edged grief, Ms Cini said she learnt quickly that it wasn’t going to go away. Ms Cini often asks bereaved parents what their late children would want them to do. They’d want mum and dad to be happy, she said. To donate or volunteer to Spinal Muscular Atrophy Australia, go to smaaustralia.org.au, its Facebook page or its office in Melverton Drive, Hallam. Leaving Life Legacies is available at juliecini. com.au or from the SMA charity.

Judge thanked for ban By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A man smiled and uttered “thank God, yes” as a court slapped him with a five-year intervention order to protect his ex-partner and her two children. Bashkim Gashi, 33, was accused of twice choking the ex-partner in her home in defiance of an earlier full intervention order. At the time he was serving a community corrections order for threatening to kill a mechanic who he believed was having an affair with his expartner. The strangulation incidents dramatically increased the risk of a future homicide or further serious harm, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted at the 2 May hearing. In a sentence indication, the magistrate offered Gashi an 18-month jail term – with a six-month non-parole period – if the accused pleaded guilty to all charges.
The offences included disqualified driving, assault, intentionally causing injury as well as criminal damage for allegedly shattering a glass cake holder at a Narre Warren kebab outlet. Gashi had pushed the holder on the floor after complaining that the food he’d consumed was frozen and demanded free chips. During a police interview over the incident, he showed no remorse and made jokes, the court was told. Gashi was accused of six breaches of an intervention order since October by attending the expartner’s Noble Park house. On one occasion, Gashi allegedly threw a glass against a wall, head-butted the victim’s face and nose and pushed her backwards causing her head to hit the wall, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Steyn told the court. The victim believed her nose was broken and
she’d been in pain for two months following the incident. In April, Gashi allegedly pushed the ex-partner into a glass sliding door, grabbed her by the neck and tightened until she couldn’t breathe, the court was told. She was lifted off the ground and her nose was bitten progressively harder and thought part of her nose had been bitten off. On 24 April, the ex-partner was washing her hands in a bathroom when Gashi dragged her out by the throat and put a hand over her mouth. Gashi’s lawyer said the accused pleaded guilty to the driving and criminal damage charges but contested the recent family violence-related offences. Gashi rejected the sentence indication and elected to contest the charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 31 May.
In Brief Water overflow parking Casey council will support a Hallam mosque’s bid for overflow car parking on Melbourne Water land. The extra car parking would be at the rear of the mosque at 131-137 Belgrave-Hallam Road. Councillor Rafal Kaplon said there had been residents’ complaints about traffic and parking during mosque peak times. The council had recently increased the mosque’s permitted patronage because of growing demand, he said.
Hunt after taxi assault A taxi driver was assaulted en route to Doveton by two males. The male driver sustained minor injuries but was forced to stop the car and flee on foot. The two offenders stole the taxi’s contents and left the scene on Tristania Street in Doveton about 10.20pm on Sunday 1 May. The taxi driver had picked up the two males from Dandenong Railway Station.
Boat lands up in Doveton A boat stolen from Ringwood was last seen at an address in Doveton. The boat named the Hornet Trophy was stolen from Ringwood on Thursday 28 April and was last seen on Friday 29 April on Box Street, Doveton.
Teens seen, bikes gone Witnesses claim two teenagers were seen hanging around a residential street in Berwick before two mountain bikes were stolen from a nearby unlocked garage. The bikes, valued at about $2000, were taken from the Marisa Crescent address on Monday 25 April between 1.30pm and 2pm. The bicycles are described as male and female mountain bikes, one 21-inch, black frame with green stripes and the other 16-inch, black frame with blue stripes.

She’s now an education officer at Myuna Farm in Doveton. “If I didn’t have them, I wouldn’t have been able to go to tertiary education at all,” Kelly said.
“It’s not just the financial side – they help you with everything. “It is actually someone that’s caring and with you every step of the way.” The Smith Family’s Dandenong team covers 817 Learning for Life sponsored students in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. Breaking the cycle of disadvantage is its aim. She and her younger siblings joined the program at her primary school principal’s suggestion. At the time her dad was unemployed and there were six kids in the family. “It means the world when you’re struggling and someone else is out there supporting you,” she said. At age 18 Kelly moved from her then-home in

A few times I couldn’t really see the end,” she said. “Having your co-ordinator there on the end of the phone was amazing. “They assure you everything’s going to be OK.” A masters of education is her next goal to extend the work she’s already doing with school groups at Myuna Farm. “I know how much it means for people to get that education and get that skill and start young,” she said.
The Hallam Football Club wore white armbands in honour of slain domestic violence campaigner, Karen Belej on the weekend. Her boyfriend is facing a murder charge, after her death in the home they shared in Cardross, southeast of Mildura on Sunday 1 May. Casey councillor Wayne Smith, a relative of Ms Belej, said he hoped other sporting clubs in the region would jump on board and pay tribute to the 31-year-old. “My son Kieran has asked his club, the Hallam Hawks, to wear white armbands and friends and family of Karen’s put the call out to Victorian clubs on Facebook,” Cr Smith said. Ms Belej was an active white ribbon advocate and worked for the Mildura Rural City Council. A man, 36, has been charged with murder after allegedly admitting to the shooting. Police took him into custody soon after Mr Belej’s body was found around 7.30pm on Sunday.

3 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 9 May, 2016
Brothers were very good news What’s In a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s bestknown street names. This week the Journal looks at central Dandenong’s Ewart Lane, named for the family behind a popular local business. EWART Lane was named after Ewart’s Newsagency and Stationery Supplies - once a prominent newsagent in Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. The store on this site - between Walker Street and the Vanity Court Arcade – had operated as a newsagency and stationary supplier for several decades before David Eward bought it in 1919. The long, narrow shop was to the left of Tharle Brothers Butchers and directly between De Lorenzo’s Fruit Shop and Trewin’s Bakery. The two-storey building would have been among the first of the new brick structures built in Dandenong, and would have replaced one of the many single-fronted, single-storey timber buildings that formed what was then the onestreet country town.
WHAT’S IN A
NAME Ewart’s Newsagency and Stationery Supplies backed onto the lane that now bears the family name and was operated by brothers Norman and Charlie Ewart. During the 1930s and ‘40s it was the only newsagent in Dandenong. It sold books, photo frames, leather goods, fountain pens and writing cases, and was especially popular around Christmas. Ewart’s was the place to go to book tickets to shows, collect magazine subscriptions, and even hand in lost items such as umbrellas, watches or wallets in the hope of receiving a reward. John Ewart is Norman and Charlie’s nephew.
John, Ruth and Catherine Ewart look at signage in Ewart Lane. 143393 Picture: ROB CAREW He said they moved to Dandenong from Brighton in the 1920s and that there were four brothers in all. “Alan had the menswear store not far from there,” he said. “My father was Frank and he was the youngest of the four brothers. Frank was a banker.”
Looking Back 100 years ago 6 May 1916 To the Editor Sir, We, the undersigned members of the Red Cross Committee, wish to answer the criticism of us by the president of the shire. 1. The certain clique Cr Pearson mentions are those who are all that remains of our original committee of 23, and who were reelected at our annual meeting at which every denomination and class were invited. We have worked to the best of our ability as far as our domestic ties would allow and during our term of office, the workers will vouch for our presence in the room. 2. Cr Pearson says that owing to the resignation of the senior vice-president he was reluctantly compelled to close the room on Tuesday 28 March for about two hours,
Norman was the eldest brother and died in 1954. “The funeral procession was the whole length of Lonsdale Street,” John said. He said the brothers would have known most Dandenong residents. “In those days it was a small country village rather than a big suburb like it is now,” he said. “There was nothing much between Cheltenham and Dandenong.” Charlie and Norman had no children. Alan had a daughter, Doris, and a son named Russell. “After Norman died Charlie kept the newsagency going. I think Russell helped him with that,” John said. John isn’t sure what happened to the business after Charlie passed away. “But I think whoever took it over might have kept Russell’s son on for a little while,” he said. Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society until his wife as vice president was able to take charge. Perhaps Cr Pearson has forgotten that he threatened - at the committee meeting on the previous Thursday 23 March and before the senior vice president has resigned - that he would close the Red Cross room if we did not give his wife the positon of president. Senior vice president Lucy A Veal, Nellie Abbott, Lillie Langley, Constance Collin, Isabel Talbot, and honourable secretary Ella Hayman.
50 years 5 May 1966 Hail of Bullets Passers by in Langhorne Street the other day looked for spots to shelter from a hail of bullets as ‘cops’ raced in and out of a building
pointing pistols and sub-guns. Then it started to rain and cops, fugitive and sundry background characters adjoined to a nearby coffee lounge. The action was a segment of Crawford Productions’s Homicide called The Boy from Anywhere, which is due for screening on 5 July. Dandenong people will probably recognise faces and places when the film is shown.
20 years 13 May 1996 ‘Imports’ boost workers’ pool Two thirds of Greater Dandenong’s workforce is unqualified and most of its white collar workers are “imported” from other suburbs. Almost half of the population was born overseas and are mostly from Asia. The population is rapidly ageing, with the
over-65 category expected to jump from nine per cent in 1991 to 21 per cent in 2011.
5 years 9 May 2011 Cruisin’ on Lonsdale Lonsdale Street’s redevelopment is officially complete, much to the relief of motorists and traders. About 600 metres of the street has been redeveloped as part of VicUrban’s Revitalising Central Dandenong project. “From a tired, congested traffic thoroughfare, this main street is in the final stages of becoming a tree-lined boulevard with wider granite paved footpaths, improved lighting and more pedestrian-friendly crossings.” - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Harmony rules By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS No one said world harmony came easily. After two years of design and construction including crushing and placing mosaic tiles of all colours at lunchtimes - Gleneagles Secondary College’s multicultural friendship chair has been opened for sitting. The wondrous design, which has become a popular lunchtime hangout - represents about 65 different cultures at the college. It includes patterns from Aboriginal cultures and from India, New Zealand, Oceania, South America, Africa, Middle East, Pacific Islands, Indonesia, China, Turkey and Greece. On 3 May, Victorian Multicultural Commissioner Sam Almaliki cut the ribbon to officially open the chair. Despite hostile weather, a Welcome to Country smoke ceremony and cultural dances by students Sabrina and Resalene Lavaka bookended the ceremony. The idea sprung three years ago from the col-
lege’s students who wanted to create an interactive artwork that represented the “voice of the students”. Students, teachers, parents and the college’s artist-in-residence Lesley Donnellon worked long hours to create the mosaics. Teacher Ariella Sweet said the chair was a point of pride in a “diverse and multicultural” school. “This project has taught us a lot about communication, the need for respect and understanding, and the importance of celebrating rather than hiding one’s cultural identity, customs, language, belief, religion, style of dress, food and ancestry. “We are so very grateful for the friendships that were formed whilst creating this project and the friendships that will continue to form whilst using it.” The chair had become a focal meeting place and a way for the school to understand its array of cultures and to prevent bullying, she said. The project’s sponsors National Tiles, Bunnings Fountain Gate, Masters and Tuff Turf were also recognised in the ceremony.
The artist will design, fabricate and install a visionary public artwork on an eight storey building in the heart of Dandenong. “The aspiration for the artwork is to capture the welcoming soul of the City; to personify the diversity of its humanity so as to resonate with locals, and to celebrate this positive attribute with visitors.” Suitably qualified and experienced artists/ designers with a proven record in undertaking large scale public art projects are encouraged to submit. Shortlisted artists will be engaged to develop a visionary artistic concept in response to an exciting community lead project vision and guiding principles.

Having a go at life’s challenges By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Anne Atkin cuts the Painting with Parkinson's 10th birthday cake with Mick De Prose. cept has branched out to seven groups across Victoria. With funding, she could extend the group to include Alzheimer’s patients – who also benefit from art classes. Ms Atkin points out medical research into Parkinson’s is small compared to other neural disease. “We still don’t know what causes it. There’s three groups of people where it’s most common farmers, teachers and medical staff. “It’s getting more common and people are get-

At 50, Ms Atkin slowly developed a hunch and lost movement in one arm. It was at that point an aunt advised she could have Parkinson’s – an affliction that Ms Atkin had never heard about. She tried to carry on teaching for several months but was needing to sleep at lunchtime to take afternoon classes. People’s symptoms include 33 non-motor

ones, such as breathing difficulties, fatigue, excessive sweating, digestive problems and mental loss, and any of four motor symptoms – tremor, rigidity, core balance and slowness of movement. The only motor symptom Ms Atkin doesn’t have is a tremor – which made it difficult to diagnose at first. Some doors of her life have closed, but others have opened – such as founding Painting with Parkinson’s, writing books on the illness and having morning tea with a Governor-General. “I love the group and I love doing what I do.”
1209337-RC05-16
Anne Atkin still keeps on forging new ground. Ten years after pioneering a Painting with Parkinson’s class in Berwick and writing several books, Ms Atkin, 65, is poised for radical brain surgery to allay her illness’s paralysing effects. Her books on the illness match her philosophy - that you have to have a life. “You never, never know if you don’t have a go,” she says. In June, Ms Atkin will take another giant step – being surgically wired with a neurotransmitter connected from her collarbone to the centre of her brain. She describes it as like a heart pace-maker. Its pulses of electricity will help correct Ms Atkin’s muddied neural signals. It’s a treatment not a long-awaited cure, she stresses. It possibly means five years of less medication, less fatigue and freer movement. It may be a temporary allayment of her regular frustration. “Some days it’s like walking through deep mud. That’s what the air feels like,” she says. “Your feet just stick to the floor.” The accomplished artist jokes that she’s had to explore more abstract painting. Her paintinghand’s shakes don’t matter so much then, she says. She speaks passionately of teaching up to 20 class members the basics of creating art - colour, tone and composition. But it’s all light-hearted on the ground. “A lot of people say they can’t believe it’s a support group – it looks like a party. “It’s nice to talk with someone who knows exactly how you feel.” The class starts with a chat over cake, some brain exercises and then painting - all of which have therapeutic effects for a disease that marches on without a cure. Members discover they can paint and also find a stillness to their trembling hands while they focus on a creative task. Several members can testify to the benefits, yet the group runs without any government funding. It says much for Ms Atkin’s drive that the con-

Driver dodges car theft charge By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN who was believed to be driving a $175,000 BMW ‘bought’ with false identification has been told he was fortunate not to be charged with the vehicle’s theft. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 2 May that Bilal Gurlu was not the owner of the car but that it had been fraudulently purchased by another man using false identification. Gurlu was intercepted by police in the vehicle in Footscray and Essendon on 27 September 2014. After on-the-spot interviews, Gurlu was allegedly spotted by police shifting from the passenger seat to behind the wheel and driving off. The next day, police seized the car from a Dallas address. He was charged with proceeds of crime but the court was told that he was only driving the vehicle for his cousin, who was a disqualified driver. The court was also told that his cousin had been given the car. Gurlu was also charged with criminal damage after allegedly forced his way through a sloping door in his ex-partner’s house in Endeavour Hills on 1 May. His lawyer said the accused wasn’t “thinking straight” due to his poor mental health at the time.
You are invited to Biggest Morning Tea 10.30- 12 noon Friday 27 May 2016
Gurlu also faced charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court of possessing two grams of cannabis, found in his car after a police intercept in Northcote. A defence lawyer said his client’s life had “turned upside down” due to a business partner syphoning money from Gurlu and his ex’s business. His subsequent cannabis and ice abuse was attempted self-medication for his depression. The accused denied the criminal damage charge, the court was told. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said an “agitated” Gurlu was fortunate not to be charged with theft of the motor vehicle or with unlawful entry into his ex-partner’s house. Mr Vandersteen noted a previous family violence order protecting Gurlu’s sister and mother, as well as the accused’s “erratic” behaviour including banging his head in the cells. Mr Vandersteen said he needed more information on Gurlu’s residence and supports in the community. “On the face of his criminal record, I agree a (community order) is within range but I’m not satisfied that he is ready to comply at this point.” Gurlu was remanded in custody pending a community corrections assessment the next day.

Victim tricked by shaggy dog story Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said the driver asked to make a call from the pedestrian’s phone because he had lost his dog. “The victim asked for the number and dialled it on behalf of the driver and when it didn’t work he dialled the same number again,” Sen Sgt Clark said. “The offender then grabbed the phone and has driven a short distance with the victim still holding on and has then taken off.”

Mosque ‘out of place’
Land to solve pitch shortage
By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Save the Casey Foothills Association members in Narre Warren North’s rural environs. 153633 Picture: ROB CAREW Saarban Islamic Trust spokesman Zain Shah said an altered proposal was being considered, but not a change of site. Mr Shah said the place-of-worship was urgently needed, with would-be attendees unable to fit in an existing mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road. He said there were still plans to expand on the 450-person proposed mosque in about 10 years’ time - taking into account Casey’s future population growth. Mr Shah said he planned to meet again with the council over the proposal, describing last
week’s events as “unnecessary hype” due to the issue being targeted by anti-Islamic protest. “We have nothing against anybody. We will just follow the rules and regulations of the council.” On 3 May, Casey councillors passed a motion for a report into better protection from “inappropriate development” in the municipality’s green wedge. The report will also investigate how to retain the rural or semi-rural character of established settlements.

CASEY council will seek access to Police Paddocks Reserve in Endeavour Hills to solve a soccer ground shortage in the municipality’s north. The council resolved on 3 May to write to Parks Victoria to either extend Sydney Pargeter Reserve into the paddocks or use other parts of the paddocks. It is believed Greater Dandenong Council has already made a similar request. Councillor Rafal Kaplon said he knew of Casey soccer clubs such as Berwick City, Casey Panthers, Endeavour Sporting and Endeavour United knocking back up to 100 players due to a scarcity of pitches. “We all recognise that demand in Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren North for soccer is huge. “Developing the pitches is an expensive undertaking and the first thing is getting the land.” The necessary extra land could be found by striking a lease or another arrangement with Parks Victoria. Parts of the closed Endeavour Hills Secondary College site have already been promised by the State Government for soccer purposes, Cr Kaplon said. The council will consider tipping in $415,000 towards a synthetic soccer pitch at Gleneagles Secondary College. As an alternative, Casey will also request the State Government increase its $1 million contribution to cover the $415,000 shortfall. The synthetic pitch could host up to 60 hours of soccer a week, compared to 20 hours a week for natural turf. Cr Kaplon said there was a united resolve among fellow ward councillor Rosalie Crestani and state MPs Luke Donnellan and Gabrielle Williams to come up with a soccer solution. The council also copied in Ms Williams to its Parks Victoria request.

A GREEN-wedge conservation group has advised proponents of a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North to find another site in Casey. Rosalie Counsell, convenor of Save the Casey Foothills Association, said the proposed site at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road was the wrong location. “The Islamic community is entitled to have a place to worship,” she said. “(It) would be more appropriately situated within the urban area, readily accessible to the majority of its patrons. “Surely it would be better for the Saarban group to abandon the purchase of the Narre Warren North site and work co-operatively with council to find a more suitable one.” Ms Counsell said it was a “sad day for democracy” that her group that legitimately fought to protect the rural landscape was painted as racist and religiously intolerant. “That the proponents of the Narre Warren North mosque have played this card is disappointing enough, but it is disgraceful that news reports have been so unbalanced, ill-informed and inflammatory.” Despite vocal pro-mosque protests, Casey Council rejected the project on several planning grounds on 26 April. Mayor Sam Aziz strongly denied the council was swayed by Islamophobic arguments. The council found the project’s scale and intensity was out of place with its green wedge and rural foothill location. VicRoads had also objected due to its traffic impact which meant that the council was legally required to knock back the application. Ms Counsell said the proponent, Saarban Islamic Trust, had plans to expand on the site, potentially adding a large school and other “urbantype facilities” to its proposed mosque. “The mosque alone would have been jarringly out of context in these foothills to the Dandenong Ranges.” She said development was constrained by stringent planning policies to protect the foothills.

garden! A flashback from Greater Dandenong councillor Roz Blades caught our eye on Facebook last week. She and her husband Terry married on 3 May in 1969 when she wore a mini dress and sling-back shoes with flowers in her ringlets. He’d put on his best drain pipe suit and had long sideburns. “It was as if there were only two of us in the room,” she said.

Gerry Ryan has joined the Visit Victoria board to applause from the caravan and camping industry. Tourism Minister John Eren made the appointment, adding the Dandenong businessman to the mix to help Victoria remain a destination of choice.

A better way to get jobs done
Guest speaker Simon McKeon was caught out by a last-minute venue change for the SEBN industry breakfast on Tuesday 3 May. He told the 120-strong turnout at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale that he’d got there via nearby Highways - the original venue for the Tap into the Talent event. “I don’t know if anyone’s sitting there having breakfast by themselves,” he said.
Words fail sometimes, even for criminal defence lawyers. The lawyer represented a man in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court recently who had head-butted a person outside a bowls club, swung a knife at a party-goer, tried to break into two cars and punched holes into his father’s house. Aside from conceding her client had a booze and ice problem, the lawyer said the best explanation was “he had no good explanation”. Here’s a reminder on how hard it is to be a cop or a paramedic. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that emergency services were called to a young woman behaving irrationally outside a supermarket. She swung a punch at a police officer and repeatedly spat upon, kicked and lashed out at a paramedic as she was restrained in an ambulance. She then bit the police officer before being sedated and taken to Casey Hospital, the ambulance stopping three times on the way due to the woman’s behaviour.

For more than a decade, the Dandenong dealership has provided financial support for the local football club and once-in-a-lifetime experiences for fans to get up close with AFL stars. This year proves no exception, with Western Bulldogs coach and player Rob Murphy guest appearing for training drills and an exclusive Q and A. So far, more than 130 local football clubs have benefited from the Good for Footy program, receiving over $2.6 million between them thanks to Toyota dealers across the states. This year, Patterson Cheney Toyota promises another big night for the club and supporters. “We are proud to continue our sponsorship with Noble Park Football Club and to be part of their long-running success, which includes over 161 Grand Finals and 60 premierships. “It’s great to see the club evolve and benefit from our relationship over the past decade,” Patterson Cheney general sales manager David Haines said.
St Kilda forward Josh Bruce with young fan Brodie Ferguson. 153129 On the night there are plenty of activities on offer including a dual-lane bungee fun run, bucking footy, haunted house slide, a retro photobooth caravan, plus the chance to run through the club’s banner on the night. The canteen will be open and there is also a sausage sizzle and hot food available on the night. SEN will be broadcasting live crosses throughout the event. Innovation fund boost Casey mayor Sam Aziz unveiled a $100,000 Innovation Fund at a dinner with business leaders at Cranbourne Golf Club on Thursday 28 April. Cr Aziz said the fund would make available five interest free loans of $20,000 to Casey businesses to channel into innovative programs and projects. He said the first allocation will be made on 1 July this year and the fund will expand over time to help foster innovation throughout the business community. “The loans would be to a maximum of $20,000 per business,” Cr Aziz explained. “But as the fund grows by $100,000 each year, both the maximum quantum of the loan and the number of businesses receiving it will grow. 30 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 9 May, 2016
“As the years go by, this growth could prove to be exponential and will have a massive impact on driving innovation and growth in Casey.” Cr Aziz said that innovation was defined as doing something in a new, create or novel way. “It may involve improving an existing service or product in an original way that increases its utility to the consumer or opens up new markets,” he said. “It may mean that an idea is radically different or equally it may mean that an idea addresses an everyday process in a revolutionary manner.” Cr Aziz hosted business leaders in the first of what he hopes will be regular catch-ups over dinner.
“I have called you all together for the first time as key business figures in our city to share your wealth of experience across the municipality and to explore possibilities for the future,” he said. Jan Vydra from Clyde-based Australian Fresh Herbs explained to the crowd how his company had gone ahead through innovative processes. He explained how his team employed cloud technology, hydroponic methods and innovative practices to increase crop yield and improve customer experience. Mr Vydra then joined Ron Weinzierl from APT, Neville Waterman from the Waterman Group and Ray Keefe from Successful Endeavours on stage for a Q&A session.
Kids can transform trash into art at a mega manufacturing showcase in Dandenong. Dandenong South’s Smart Recycling will use a display at Smart Manufacturing ’16 - Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show to inspire a new generation of artists to see worth in materials that society discarded. Committee for Dandenong (C4D) and its partners are presenting the expo-style event on Tuesday 17 May to promote the region’s capability and capacity. The 35-acre Smart Recycling site was once a tip and has become an unlikely place for artistic inspiration. Artists and designers regularly visit the site to salvage industrial timber packaging waste to be used in their celebrated designs. Smart Recycling managing director Ward Petherbridge said his Smart Kids Zone would feature art and gardening projects using the materials recycled at the site. Kids can get their hands dirty planting herbs to take home using recycled soil and mulch, and they can combine graphic stencils and bright paints with timber off-cuts. They’ll be able to take home a free model train and truck kit designed by Smart Recycling production manager Loe Hagai. For further inspiration, the stand will showcase past entries from Create from a Crate in which woodworkers turn two timber packaging crates into art. Smart Recycling divert 50,000 tonnes of waste annually from landfill through their recycling activities. Mr Petherbridge said enough pallets, crates and other waste timbers to fill the MCG 1.5 times were discarded each year.
New voice ready for fun factory By CASEY NEILL Maddison McNamara is swapping the factory floor for the stage. The 21-year-old from Officer appeared on Channel 9 television show The Voice on Sunday 1 May. She’s worked at her dad’s Dandenong South timber finishing business, Top Quality Finish, since 2011. It pays the bills but she’s ready to ditch the sander and cleaning products to pick up a microphone. “Once you finally get to do what you want to do it makes it that much more rewarding.” Maddison belted out an emotion-packed rendition of Gone by Lianne La Havas for her blind audition. She takes the stage with the judges – the Madden Brothers, Jessie J, Delta Goodrem and Ronan Keating – sitting in large red chairs with their backs to her. “At the start I was just freaking out because it was halfway through my audition and no-one’s turned yet,” she said. The Madden Brothers were the first to turn around after she sufficiently wowed them with her soulful vocals. “My instant reaction then was ‘I’m through, I don’t care what happens now, I’m happy’,” she said. The other judges followed suit. “To get four chairs was just the best feeling ever,” she said. She chose to join the Madden Brothers’ team so will receive coaching from the pair throughout her time in the competition. “When they turned around I felt an instant connection with them,” she said. Maddison had been practicing Gone for the past 18 months. “My singing teacher from my university actually showed me the song and it took me a while to actually listen to it, but once I did I fell in love with it,” she said. “I connect to the song and I sing it well.” She was studying a bachelor of music at the Australian Institute of Music in Melbourne but
Budding singer Maddison McNamara. has put it on hold to complete an advanced diploma for now. “I definitely want to take it onto the big stage. I want to be a recording artist and I definitely want to be an influence to children and to other singers who want to live the dream,” she said. “A couple of years ago I did a trip to Cambodia for Schoolies.
“Once I experienced that and saw how kids at that age have no families and they have no money and they don’t have education.” Maddison hopes The Voice will provide her with the exposure she needs to turn her passion into a career. “I’ve just been performing my whole life, since the age of five,” she said.
The show’s battle rounds are next, where Maddison will belt out a song against a team mate to keep her place, and live performances will follow. “The thought of thousands and thousands of people is daunting, but this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, you have to get used to it,” she said.

SPORT Vic Metro makes its MCG mark By JARROD POTTER AFL VICTORIA YOUTH GIRLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - GRAND FINAL FROM the first bounce, there was only one side that could win. Vic Metro stole the show from Western Australia and the hosts made sure the home of football became its happiest hunting ground yet. It was as clinical a performance as ever seen on the MCG, as the Metropolitan charges left no stone unturned en route to its second consecutive national championship. Taking it to Western Australia straight up the guts, Vic Metro’s Olivia McFawn, Georgia Gee and Tyla Hanks pushed the ball out of the centre. Too long and too direct for the Swans to handle, it flew into the waiting hands of Isabel Huntington and captain Katherine Smith. The Metropolitan mainstays lit up the ‘G and showed the best calibre of Youth Girls’ football seen for a long time. Both girls put their hands up for AFL selection at the upcoming National Women’s League (NWL) draft as they were everywhere throughout the grand final - in particular a staggering four goal second term from Huntington as she racked up five for the game. It wasn’t just forward of the ball the Metro stars shone though. The back end surged at every chance - albeit limited by Victoria’s midfield and forward dominance - as the likes of Dandenong Stingrays’ vicecaptain Jordy Allen, Parkmore footballer Charis Ulu Peniata and Stingrays’ utility Jas Grierson made sure the visitors would remain shut out of the contest. Such was their domination that Western Australia’s handful of forward opportunities barely looked like troubling the goal umpires as Vic Metro wanted to not only win, but do it in emphatic style. But it’s hard to single anyone out every Vic Metro footballer truly held up their end of the bargain. Maddie Prespakis roaming the forward line with two goals, Beaconsfield’s Brooke Struylaart jagging another two to cap off an extraordinary first state campaign as the competition’s leading goalkicker, Deanna Berry throughout the ground, Gemma Lagioia pinpointing passes ... and so on the list could go on throughout the whole side. Not even a 10-goal margin at the final change would give Vic Metro cause for early celebration. Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman told the side to remain respectful, push hard and enjoy the last 15 minutes of an extraordinary campaign. They knuckled down, cleared the ball from Western Australia’s last ditch efforts at scoring and generally kept the foot down until the final siren when the bench erupted and everyone ran onto the field as premiers.
Vic Metro celebrated an AFL Youth Girls National Championships victory with a win on the MCG over Western Australia. 153915 For Western Australia, Courtney Hodder flew the flag all night while Rachel Ashley was serviceable down back. Siekman was without many words after the win - his second in a row as state coach - but wanted to say how immensely amazed and blessed he felt to coach this side and cap off the 2016 championships’ story. “I was just so proud that the girls had the opportunity to play on there and I ensured that my coaches and assistant coaches did all they could to make sure they had that chance,” Siekman said. “They delivered on the biggest stage in the world and with that result - 95 to zero - everything just fitted in perfectly.” Captain Katherine Smith bowed out of Youth
Girls football in her trademark fashion – hardedged, under the packs and splitting the defence with a couple of extraordinary goals. But the skipper takes away more than the medal and the 95-point premiership victory – the Vic Metro spirit and the camaraderie among the group made it a week for Smith to savour forever. “It’s just unbelievable – it’s a dream to play on the ‘G, but to do it with such a great bunch of girls and winning in the end was a huge buzz,” Smith said. “It was an electric feeling and I just can’t describe it. “The girls really delivered on keeping composed and making sure we didn’t get ahead of ourselves – it’s a 60-minute game of football and that’s we needed to continue doing.”
Picture: JARROD POTTER
Captain and coach farewelled the Vic Metro ranks in the best way possible - with Siekman moving on with a smile and Smith ageing out of the program after four years in the side. So the celebrations began in the bowels of the MCG, but the last words on a 95-point demolition and three amazing seasons at the helm to an immensely proud Siekman. “As a coach you just can’t be any prouder - I’m almost speechless,” Siekman said. YOUTH GIRLS SCOREBOARD VIC METRO 14.11 (95) WESTERN AUSTRALIA 0.0 (0) Vic Metro Goals: Huntington 5, Hayes 3, Struylaart 3, Prespakis 2, Smith. Best: Huntington, Smith, Allen, Grierson, Hayes.
Dandenong Stingrays vanquish the invading Knights By JARROD POTTER TAC CUP - ROUND 7 TAKING no prisoners at its Shepley Oval fortress, Dandenong smashed through the Northern Knights’ lines and inflicted a 99-point battering. Knights haven’t been slain where they stood at this rate since the last Crusade, but such was the Stingrays’ ferocity that the visiting northern force had little chance from the first bounce onwards. Northern had two bites of the cherry with the wind, sticking with the Stingrays through the first term, but Dandenong made sure it cashed in with it in second. The Stingrays booted its way to a staggering nine-goal term - led by the likes of Tom “Cloud Nine” De Koning (nine goals) - to wither up any chance of the visitors’ victory. De Koning rattled them off in every fashion at ground level, in the air and making his set shots truly count - and put his hand up straight away as a 2017 draft prospect. “He kicked three points last week and was practicing on Thursday night - his dad told me he had a good technique and used to kick them as a kid,” Dandenong Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “It’s more about the opportunity that he got -
he was in front, got a big long reach and he jumps at the footy. Not to be outdone by their taller brethren, Sam Fowler (five goals) added another bag to his haul while Danny Allsop (three goals) and Charlie Martello (two goals) also terrorised the Knights’ defence to help boot another nine in the last term. Myles Poholke, birthday boy Tommy Glen and Dandenong captain Liam McKay made life just as tough through the middle for the visitors as they started most forward rampages from the centre bounce. It wasn’t just the free-wheeling forwards and hard-edged midfielders carving up the Knights though; the defence sowed the seeds of Northern’s defeat from the last line. Reece Piper was in best-on-ground form - going as well as the bloke who drilled nine - as he cannoned kick-ins 70-80m with the wind, as well as working his way up the ground and smashing apart the visiting midfield. He nailed the Knights’ coffin shut with a beguiling run through half-forward, getting past one, two, three Knights and ramming home the goal straight through the uprights. Also holding up the back end were Mason De Wit, Bailey Morrish, Jordan Stewart, Brenton Wells and another young Stingray-on-the-rise
Jake Frawley. Dandenong will head to Wangaratta to battle Murray on Saturday afternoon in a first-versusfourth battle and despite the success, Black said there’s no such thing as a set line-up as every spot in the side is up for grabs. “We get Murray Bushrangers who are a really good team and up at Wangaratta they’re always hard to beat - the good thing about winning games of footy it puts pressure on the list still,” Black said. “We’ve played 35 players this year - which is probably more than what we’ve played - so we can win by 99 points but we’ve got 30 kids who aren’t playing that are putting pressure on these guys so it makes people hungry for spots.” TAC CUP SCOREBOARD DANDENONG 4.1 13.8 15.8 24.10 (154) NORTHERN 3.3 4.5 6.11 7.13 (55) DANDENONG Goals: T. Hawks, Pumas well away in SFL Division 3 start By JARROD POTTER GREATER DANDENONG FOOTBALL REVIEW - ROUND 5 THERE wasn’t much to smile about in the higher ranks of Southern Football League for the Dandy sides, but Division 3 remains prime territory for the locals. Struggling to score against the rampaging Caulfield, Keysborough fell away after threequarter-time to concede a 5.10 (40) to 21.14 (140) loss. Will Gayfer (four goals) was the big target up forward for Keysy and he delivered while Danny Morland, Thomas Anderton and Dylan Carlsson also impressed. Springvale Districts 6.6 (42) was similarly belted by Hampton 14.17 (110). Two early goals and a quarter time lead amounted for most of the Demons’ scoring through to the final break as nothing could shatter the Hammers’ defence thereafter. Louis Greco (two goals), Todd Wills and Andrew Do led the Demons’ way. Hallam sits second after another bruise-free victory, knocking over Dandenong by 93 as Matt Neve (four goals) and Tom Bradley (four goals) had a field day alongside Stephen Chin, Kieran Smith and Rory McIvor. Lyndale 19.13 (127) brushed aside Carrum Patterson Lakes 9.7 (61) as Trevor Kumetaitis booted five goals to star alongside Brett Tosh, Matt Stuart and Jayden Malek. Endeavour Hills rounded out the triumphant in SFL Division 3, knocking over Moorabbin 11.17 (82) to 7.10 (52) as Byron Hoe, Jayson Bruce and Jake Van Hoesel led the Falcons’ swoop to success. Sandown was belted by South Yarra to the tune of 188 points. The situation at Edinburgh Reserve only got worse for the Cobras after coach Rick Bean stepped down during the week, citing personal reasons for his departure. Doveton Eagles was pipped at the post by Ashwood 11.12 (78) to 11.13 (79). The Eagles couldn’t hold a slender lead through the final term, despite the best efforts of Matt O’Callaghan, Jarrod O’Neill and Brett Hidgcock. Four-and-zip was the prediction last week and St John’s brought that prophecy to life against Emmaus St Leos. The JOCs negated the Animals throughout most of the day - giving them only three goals to the last break - will piling on 15 themselves through Tim Edwards (four goals), Laurence Kazinoti (three goals) and Aaron Thornton (three goals). John Ayama and Dylan Webb led from the front alongside Guy Chuol and Liam O’Connor. Masala was beaten comfortably 9.8 (62) to 16.14 (110) by Manningham Cobras. Sam Freeman and Matthew Sexton kicked three each. Noble Park 8.18 (66) sprayed its way to defeat against Blackburn 17.12 (114). The Bulls gave away too much advantage through the first half as the Panthers pounced on 11 goals to 3.10. Ziggie Alwan (two goals) was best afield alongside Kevin Kean and Sam Monaghan.

Thunder’s 11th heaven By JARROD POTTER NPL 2 EAST - ROUND 11 SEVENTH heaven is for amateurs; Dandenong Thunder has taken its mercurial rise to 11th heaven. With an 11-0-0 record in the bank, Thunder’s ascension back to NPL is well on track. It took a while for Thunder to get going, but the late first half goal in the reddest of red-time from defender Simon Colosimo (45+4’) set the stage for more pain. The Thunder went on safari and started collecting Zebra skins; off the bench Chris Geils (55’) opened his account soon after the resumption before big, bad Brandon Barnes (63’, 73’) took aim at the Moreland goals. Once he found his range, the hard-striking Englishman didn’t stop peppering the target as he claimed another brace to take his tally out to 14 for the season. Springvale White Eagles got its scoring going in the second half through a literal captain’s goal off Dejan Erakovic (59’). The icing on the cake was slathered on thickly by Damir Stoilovic (80’) - who slammed home the match sealing goal and his sixth of the season. The winning ways continued across Greater Dandenong as Dandenong City pumped Whittlesea Ranges 4-1 . Dandenong City hosts Nunawading City, Springvale White Eagles heads up to Murray United while Dandenong Thunder is under lights at home again with a perfect dozen on the line against Eastern Lions. In the state leagues, South Springvale strung another win onto the tally with a 2-1 triumph over Morwell Pegasus - led by goals to Konstantinos Daskalakis and Dean Panagopoulos. Doveton SC smashed its way ahead through Simba Saidi (16’) early on and held off the gutsy Seaford United to take the 1-0 victory and move into third on the SL2SE table. A last-second brace from Mayom Athiu (75’, 90’) gave Hampton Park United Sparrows the victory over Harrisfield 2-1. Endeavour Hills Fire was bested 2-4 by Springvale City, with City going ahead via goals off the bench to Dale Chrich and Aldin Pjevo, after a good start via Armin Kerla and captain Arnel Zahirovic. Dandenong South drew 1-1 with Bayside, Keysborough and Noble Park split the points in a 2-2 draw, Dandenong Warriors lost 3-4 to East Bentleigh, while White Star Dandenong took its first win besting Casey Panthers 3-1 and Endeavour United fell 2-4 to Skye United.
Keysborough Cougars stay cool in the Mildura Heat By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 8 THE rigours of a brutal schedule and a trip to the border haven’t halted Keysborough’s maiden BIG V Division 1 campaign. If anything the Cougars are steeled by the tougher tasks, as they went away on Saturday night and swiped an 85-79 victory off a Mildura side flush with import talent. Decorey Jones (29 points, 18 rebounds) lit up the Cougars’ defence but still had to contend with Calvin Enge (19 points, eight rebounds) and Aaron Abram (15 points, 12 rebounds) making life difficult for him up the other end. The visitors draining threes proved the other major problem for Mildura, as Keysborough upand-coming swingman Ben Morwood (21 points, eight rebounds) troubled the hosts with five-oneight shooting beyond the arc. “It’s been a great collective effort where everyone is playing the role,” Keysborough coach Na38 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 9 May, 2016
than Vogt said. “We’ve had games where you look at the box score and look away and see where it was won and lost, but given we had a number of guys really put in a great effort defensively. “All in all I’m really impressed with the way the guys have adjusted (to Division 1).” Vogt praised Morwood’s versatility and ultimately the headaches he creates for opposition guarding his unpredictability. “Ben Morwood has really come along developing a great inside-out game,” Vogt said. “He was really tough for them to match up on - was hitting threes, offensive rebounds, backing the basket and was doing it all. “They didn’t have anyone that could match him, without throwing out match ups like Calvin (Enge) and Aaron (Abram).” Keysborough has no easy trip this week either, heading off to Warrnambool on Sunday. It’s a nightmare run the Cougars have endured, but Vogt knows it consolidates their place in the competition if they can push up the ladder. “From here on in we’ve probably put ourselves
in a situation that if we keep playing our basketball and win the games we should, we should be on target to make the playoffs,” Vogt said. “We’ve got a pretty full on schedule, but being new kids on the block I think we’re definitely earning our place in the league. “The beauty of a tough fixture is that if we make it we know we’ve earned it and if we get there we’ve had the best preparation possible. “It’s no secret we’ve had a desire to play Division 1 for a few years now – going back to 2012 – so to be finally given that opportunity as a club we’ve grabbed it with both hands.” After a devastating loss to lowly Sherbrooke last week, Keysborough’s women bounced back on Saturday night with a 76-69 triumph over the visiting North East. The Cougars got out of the blocks fast and solidified their gains through the double-double triumvirate of Katie O’Neill (27 points, 10 rebounds), Genevieve Abbott (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Sarah Collins (11 points, 12 rebounds). Bomber blazes the track well ahead of the pack By MICHAEL FLOYD
Blazin’ Bomber claimed the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star at Sandown Park on Thursday. One Down prevailed by a neck in 29.269. It was the second group race win for Blazin’ Bomber following his Cranbourne Puppy Classic
victory last August, in which he defeated a quality field that included Kayda Shae and Dyna Double One.
Basketball shoots a hoop in breaking down borders By RUSSELL BENNETT The National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Basketball Without Borders program will hit Australia for the first time this year, and the Dandenong Stadium will hold the first camp next month. The NBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program will head to Dandenong and Geelong from 23 to 26 June. Basketball Without Borders celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and brings together the top male players born in 1999 from around the Asia Pacific region to learn from NBA and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) players, legends and coaches and to also compete against the best young players in the region. There will also be a girls’ camp for the top female players in the state, as well as a junior NBA camp for local youngsters.
In a statement on the Dandenong Basketball website, Dandenong Stadium CEO Graeme Allen said he was thrilled with the announcement that the local facility would host the event. “This is a major event for basketball in Australia and a coup for Dandenong Stadium and the many basketball participants and followers in Melbourne,” he said. “The NBA held a smaller camp here (at Dandenong Stadium) a few years ago and their return is a resounding acknowledgment of our fantastic facilities here at Dandenong – one of the best indoor basketball facilities in the world. “Players, coaches and legends of the NBA will be in town, supported by many great former NBL coaches and players, to work with and develop some of the best young talent in Australasia, right here in our great facility in Dandenong.” Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) will also be involved in the local event.
Not even harsh conditions or howling wind could dampen the joy of South East Juniors’ Spirit of Football Round. Players from Pakenham to Parkmore, Tooradin to Timbarra and all points in between donned teal armbands for Friday night and especially freezing Sunday games. That’s a lot of teal tape to put on the arms – with the 24 clubs having nearly 4,500 registered junior footballers. For the South East Juniors though, in conjunction with the Beehive Foundation, the Spirit of Football Round is all about creating the best possible environment for players, coaches, umpires and everyone connected to the national game. “At the start of the year we’d like to instil in all the clubs a sense of what the game should be about,” South East Juniors club development officer Nathan Phillips. “Should be about fair play, coming together and enjoying the national sport as it is. “Make sure the kids grow and develop from the young ones all the way to the senior level and getting that in their minds that they know what’s right and wrong and to respect the opponents.” Thousands of junior footballers in south-east Victoria embraced the armbands and battled hard to play strongwilled, but respectful football. The round creates awareness of good role models, tolerance and sportsmanship among our state’s young athletes and their families and has been a fixture to circle on the junior footy calendar each year. The league handed out over 400 medals across the round awarded by coaches to an opposition player who best represented the fairness and respect of the round.

Blazin’ Bomber set Sandown Park alight to claim the Group 3 Bill Collins Speed Star. The series brought together eight of the fastest greyhounds in the country to contest a series of match races worth $10,000 each, and Blazin’ Bomber was never threatened to stop the clock in a slick 29.090. The time was a little over a length faster than his qualifying time recorded the previous Sunday which came as no surprise to his trainer, former Test cricketer Darren Pattinson. “I thought he could go a little quicker since it was so windy on Sunday,” Pattinson said. “It’s a little windy tonight, too, but he went as well as he should have gone. “I thought the others would get close to his time - they’re very fast dogs - so to beat them by two or three lengths is a great achievement.” Others included four runners from the Jason Thompson kennel, drawn against each other, as Group 1 winner Dalgetty met Invictus Rapid in match two, and litter brothers Buck Forty and Burn One Down in match three. Never more than a length between Dalgetty and Invictus Rapid throughout their match and in a thrilling run to the line, Dalgetty mustered all of his champion qualities to find the line half a length clear in 29.316. Burn One Down’s brilliant maiden win saw him sensationally backed from $15 into $6 early in the betting for the series and led his more fancied litter bother at box rise. However Buck Forty made full use of his inside draw to rail through the lead at the first turn and open a two length lead. MOTORING Head for the Outback in style By ALISTAIR KENNEDY WHEN it was launched two decades ago the Subaru Outback was at the forefront of the steady rise in popularity of car based SUVs. Despite some minor price increases a February 2016 upgrade has accelerated sales even further with a number of new safety and convenience features including an upgraded version of the Subaru EyeSight system and a new Vision Assist feature in all but the entry-level model. Engine size identifies the five Outback variants: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.0D, 2.0D Premium and 3.6R. Outback comes with the choice of three horizontally-opposed engines - a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 3.6-litre six-cylinder petrol, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel. Power and torque peaks are 129 kW and 235 Nm (2.5i); 191 kW and 350 Nm (3.6R); and 110 kW and 350 Nm (2.0D). Top torque comes in at 4000 rpm, 4400 rpm and 1800-2800 rpm respectively. All models come with continuously variable transmission with a seven-ratio manual override available via steering wheel mounted paddleshifters. The 2.0D and 2.0D Premier diesel models get the option of six-speed manual. New with the 2016 upgrade for the two Premium variants and the 3.6R are Vision Assist features including Blind Spot Monitoring; Lane Change Assist; High Beam Assist; auto-dimming rear view mirror; and our favourite, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which sounds an alert when another vehicle is approaching when reversing out of a parking space. We were able to do back-to-back tests on the automatic Outback 2.5i ($35,990) and 3.6R ($48,490) models.
Subaru Outback combines the best of both SUV and family passenger car. There’s a real feeling of quality and luxury across the range in this fifth-gen model that has been absent in previous models. On the road Outback is noticeably more carlike than its SUV rivals. Steering is light and precise for urban driving while the suspension is firm enough for rough rural roads but without compromising cruising comfort. We found performance from the four-cylinder more than enough for our typical urban and motorway needs. The 3.6-litre six clearly offers more
performance but we couldn’t justify the extra $12,500 and around 35 per cent extra fuel consumption. On our tests we averaged around 8.2 L/100 km in the 2.5i (listed at 7.3 L/100) and 10.6 in the 3.6R (9.9). While the majority of Outbacks spend most of their time in the harsh world of suburban shopping centres and family transport it also appeals to those who want the extra traction of all-wheel drive together with higher ground clearance; bigger wheels and tyres; tougher body and suspen-
sion; and extra towing capacity. With the end of local production of family sized passenger cars in sight Subaru Outback is standing very prominently in the identity parade of possible replacements. It shares many of the benefits of an SUV, including interior space and all-wheel drive but retains the comfort and driving dynamics of the outgoing Holden, Ford and Toyota passenger cars. With Outback’s booming sales it looks like many buyers have already made the switch.
