Students discover their best selves MATER Christi Belgrave is a vibrant open entry college for girls, which is easily accessible by dedicated buses and public transport. With modern facilities, fully connected contemporary learning spaces and outstanding results, the college is passionate about girls’ education. “There is less emphasis on competition as the driver for learning. Girls are free to pursue the challenges on offer, whether academic, physical or social, in leadership, in sporting activities or in social justice and community activities,” said principal Mary FitzGerald. When girls consistently witness other girls as role models in all areas they realise there is no limit to what they can do. “From their first day at Mater Christi, students witness other girls as captain of the sports team, SRC leader, physics high achiever, drummer in the rock band or as the lead role in the school production,” she said. The ‘can-do’ energy of young girls is evident right across the beautiful campus set above the Belgrave township. Students can be seen actively engaged in the extensive programs aimed to meet their diverse interests, abilities and learning styles. Contact the college on 9754 6611 to arrange a tour or visit the website to learn more about Taster Days, scholarships and enrolling for 2017 and beyond.

The creativity and engineering skills of Mater Christi girls was on show when they won the 2015 University of Melbourne Amazing Spaghetti Machine Contest.

Robot team is programmed HILLCREST Christian College has congratulated its Robotics Team which recently represented the college and Australia in the International VEX Robotics competitions in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. The team gaining 72nd place in its division which was very good for its first showing in such a competitive and prestigious event which involved more than 500 teams from 31 countries. Afterwards the students came back highly enthused and eager to apply and share all they had learned. The school congratulated Nathaniel Pfeiffer, Toby Woodhouse, Mena Elchagie, Tom Austin and Joshua Thiele. There was also special thanks to the Head of Science Simon Taylor and the Head of IT James Poulos for leading the adventure and not getting lost as they ended up unexpectedly having to drive for 15 hours straight from Houston, Texas, to their destination. Mr Taylor said that competing in the invite-only event was a big achievement for the school. “I don’t think in college history they’ve had any type of team invited to compete overseas or somewhere like America,” he said. Principal Gregg Weaver was very excited by the invite and unofficially labelled the invite as the “biggest news in college history!” The VEX robotics group was started as an extra-curricular activity at the college by Mr Taylor and grew to include a girls’ team.

The school is proud of the Robotics Team's achievement.

RANGEBANK Preschool at Cranbourne has a brand-new outdoor playground allowing the children to engage in a variety of activities and experiences enhancing their holistic development. The Victorian Government recently donated $125,000 for a new updated playground, incorporating forts, trees, plants, a bridge, climbing equipment, stage and large open play spaces. Educator Barbara Ryan-Perkins, in her 10th year at Rangebank and her 20th year in the early childhood industry, said the preschool offered a 15-hour preschool program for fouryear-olds, preparation for school, a three-year-old preschool program and preparation for preschool. She said Rangebank had an inviting, educational preschool program for three and four-year-old children within a child centred and focused environment, preparing each child for the future and was nurturing for life. “This is a committee/family run preschool with parents having direct input into their child’s education,” she said. “We hold a variety of special event days including Mother’s Day, Father’s Night, International Day, Christmas concert, Teddybears Picnic, Footy Day, etc. “And parent involvement includes fund-raising and working bees.” She said the centre is inviting, open and encourages families to visit and observe at any time. It is family friendly with toddlers very welcome to come along while their parents are on duty.

■ Abusive husbands are testing the limits of love...

Cash strapped By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WIVES restricted to spend as little as $10 per week on personal items - by controlling husbands - is becoming a growing trend in Casey, and it’s proving hard for officers to police. In charge of the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU), Sergeant Ian Lane said this type of emotional abuse is “not what should happen in a normal and equal marriage”. “It is morally wrong, it’s not the way a relationship should operate but it’s not criminal,” he said. This means police have no grounds to lay charges and instead offenders, with victim consent, are slapped with an intervention order - which often gets breached. “There’s a whole range of options surrounding intervention orders and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t - I know a lot of men in Casey breach their intervention orders,” Sgt Lane said. Some of the most prevalent controlling abuse by male spouses surpasses financial limits, with boundaries put on social interactions as well. “These are controlling behaviours that some men use and I see it spanning different ages,” Sgt Lane said. A recent report, which landed into the lap of the CFVU team of 10, involving a Casey mother, was deemed not unique, in an abundance of shocking accounts affecting women.

“We had a report come through where a mum of primary aged children was being given $10 a week to spend on things for herself,” Sgt Lane said. “She has to ask her husband if she can get certain things if it’s outside the $10.” Sgt Lane said this instance involved a joint account, however the female spouse “is not allowed to access the money without permission to buy necessities for the household”. “In a typical marriage people share things and have equal responsibilities, this type of abuse leads to a loss of confidence for the victim and can result in mental health problems,” Sgt Lane said. “In some cases victims of this kind of family violence turn to alcohol and drugs and isolate themselves from the community.” The CFVU deals with more than 4500 family violence reports every year and Sgt Lane said a growing proportion of these involve controlling behaviours for which police cannot lay charges. “She has reported a non-violent type of domestic abuse, so in relation to him at the moment he has not committed a criminal offence,” Sgt Lane said. “It’s not criminal but it is grounds for an intervention order which in this case police have taken out on her behalf.” Sgt Lane encourages anyone experiencing emotional or physical abuse in the home to contact the Cranbourne Police Station on 5991 0600.

Couple keeps it separate receive treatment for alcohol abuse. “The issue of alcohol has been addressed for at least the immediate time by drying out in the cells.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the assault was serious, particularly because the alleged strangulation “exponentially” increased the risk of the wife being killed or injured. He noted the accused’s “shock an awe” at being in the dock. “Do not breach the intervention order. You saw how seriously the police took it last night. They arrested you despite you being 42 years old and with no prior history.” Mr Vandersteen said he’d add to

the intervention order that the husband stay away from the workplace if drunk. The man pleaded guilty to four charges, was convicted and put on a 12-month community corrections order (CCO) and an intervention order. The CCO includes supervision, alcohol and mental health treatment, and offender behaviour programs. The man argued against a conviction because it could affect his registration as an immigration agent. “Not with strangulation and a breach of a family violence order,” Mr Vandersteen replied. “You can always appeal my decision if you wish.”

several times to the arm with a small garden tool. She was grabbed around the throat twice and told by the man that “I will kill you”. The man let go his grip when the couple’s two children intervened. Early on 9 May, the man was served a family-violence safety notice at Narre Warren police station, barring him from within 200 metres of the family home. At 1.15am he was spotted in a taxi within the 200-metre exclusion zone. He claimed he had told the driver where he lived but not to drive to the family home.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A HAMPTON Park husband-and-wife will be working in their business outlet on separate days after the man throttled his wife in a drunken attack. The 42-year-old man - with no prior convictions - has been barred from within five metres of the wife as a result of a court-enforced 12-month intervention order on 9 May. The day before, the man was drunk on 200ml of Scotch when the victim arrived home about 4.30pm, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. After abuse and threats, the man punched her in the ear and struck her

He blacked out during the ride but had intended to stay with his cousin in Lynbrook, the man told police. The accused was arrested, spent the night in police cells and fronted Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that day. Defence lawyer Adam Maloney told the court the couple’s Springvale business would fail if the husband was banned from the workplace. He proposed allowing the couple to work at the business on separate days. The man had resumed drinking a week ago after completing a detox program in November, Mr Maloney told the court. A WOMAN asleep in her Clyde North home was awoken to an intruder. The female victim, who was home alone, screamed when she saw the man in her Como Parade home. The intruder was last seen running north down Como Parade and the police dog squad failed to track him down. The offender smashed through the rear sliding door on Saturday 7 May about 7.20pm. He was described as Caucasian in his mid-twenties and 5ft tall, wearing a white hooded jumper with red writing.

A DARK skinned crook armed with a gun and a knife demanded two men's wallets in an attempted street robbery in Cranbourne South. Two men aged 26 and 25 years old were approached by the male offender, described as muscly with dark hair and wearing white runners and a grey hooded jumper, on Sunday 8 May about 1.40am. The incident occurred on the corner of Camms Road and the South Gippsland Highway and the victims managed to run toward the Settlement Hotel unscathed. The canine unit sent out a dog to track the man but were unsuccessful. Anyone with information on the attempted armed robbery is urged to call the Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

IT CAN almost be called an antique; this sentimental icon of Hampton Park faces demolition. The Hampton Park Old School House may be destroyed as soon as October, unless a new, suitable home is found. In the Casey council planning scheme, the school house is covered by a heritage overlay. However, that listing is rendered futile due to the house’s location, on school grounds, at Hampton Park Primary School (HPPS). Strategic Planning and Environment manager at the City of Casey Nicola Ward advised due to its heritage listing, typically the house would “require a permit from council for its demolition”. But this is “not the case for government schools as all Department of Education land is exempt from the requirements of planning schemes”. Ms Ward said, “despite council having no statutory ability to prevent the demolition of the building, we are proactively working with the HPPS to seek more appropriate solutions”. Such solutions include relocation of the school house, built in 1922, with possibilities stretching as far as Berwick, at the Old Cheese Factory. But Ms Ward said, “discussions regarding this are in their early stages and no decisions have been made”. A Facebook campaign- to try and save the piece of history from bulldozers- launched late last year, already has more than 500 supporters. The house has sat at 32 Somerville Road since it opened, and is now in limbo due to HPPS’s $5.7million redevelopment. Government funds delivered over two years means the school can replace portable classrooms with eight permanent ones. HPPS principal of five years Leoni King says the current location of the

Change takes time for men By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WAITING lists for family violence programs for men are mirroring Casey’s high domestic abuse rates. Casey Family Violence Unit head Sergeant Ian Lane said waiting lists for some men’s behavioural change programs (MBCP) in Casey are at seven to eight months. “That means we have to wait up to eight months to even start to see a change in the behaviours of men,” Sgt lane said. “Casey is number one for repeated incidents of family violence in the state - and changing men’s behaviour is key.” South-east Melbourne, Relation-

ships Australia Victoria (RAV) manager Erika Owens said their change programs are in high demand in Casey. “We offer a 14-week structured program for men who have been violent and controlling towards their family and now want to change,” Ms Owens said. The RAV programs run out of locations in Narre Warren and Dandenong and this financial year 175 men have been through the program. Ms Owens said an increasing proportion of men attending RAV’s user pays programs are being directed through the courts. “Our program involves participants who are voluntarily attending as well as participants who have been directed to

an MBCP through a court order,” she said. RAV’s programs are subsidised by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) but participants must contribute $20 per session. However RAV makes concessions. “RAV does not refuse entry into MBPCs if participants are unable to pay the program fee,” Ms Owen said. “In these cases, RAV will discuss the individual circumstances with the client.” Ms Owen didn’t comment on RAV waiting lists but said the high demand in Casey was dealt with via “periodic intake periods”. “When intake is opened enough

names are usually taken within three weeks to fill a group,” she said. “Where an MBCP group does not have capacity for additional participants, RAV works to provide men with various options that will assist them to engage with services in a timely fashion.” In response to Sgt Lane’s comments regarding hefty waiting times Ms Owen said: “With the issue of family violence now receiving the attention it deserves, it is likely that the demand for services will also be intensified.”

White Ribbon hits home By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE White Ribbon cause means more to one Casey family than ever before. Casey councillor, Wayne Smith and his family rallied the Hallam Football Club over the weekend, in honour of slain domestic violence campaigner, Karen Belej. The Smith family are relatives of Ms Belej who was allegedly murdered in her Cardross home, south-east of Mildura on Sunday 1 May. And they were touched by the local support for White Ribbon Australia. “The whole club and its officials wore white armbands at Saturday’s game,” Cr Smith said.

“And they went on to a massive team win against the Dandenong Redlegs.” It was Cr Smith’s son, Kieran who organised the club’s support of White Ribbon Australia, and it was Ms Belej’s family and friends who started what became a state-wide tribute at weekend sporting games. “A Facebook page called ‘White armbands for Karen’ was set up and many clubs throughout Victoria got on board - we are very proud,” Cr Smith said. A tin rattle on Hallam’s game day collected more than $100 for White Ribbon Australia and Cr Smith hopes more money will be raised by the Hallam hawks at the next local footy clash.

“I watched the game and when I heard someone asking why the players had white armbands on I’d walk over and explain,” Cr Smith said. “It makes it personal. “I see the White Ribbon campaign differently now because I know a real story and it hits others personally as well when you talk about it.” Ms Belej’s boyfriend at the time of her killing is facing a murder charge. Ms Belej was an active white ribbon advocate and worked for the Mildura Rural City Council. Her body was found by police around 7.30pm on the Sunday night.

PEDESTRIANS are being bashed, lied to and robbed by barefaced thieves at new and disturbing rates across the south-east. The threat of stranger danger is peaking in Casey, and Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Darren Hedge, from the Casey Crime Investigation Unit, said “it’s scary”. “But you can’t ask people to stop walking the streets,” Det Hedge said. In just 16 days, four violent aggravated street robberies and attempts at stealing a pedestrian’s phone, wallet or electrical goods were reported to Casey police officers. A daylight bashing left a man with severe injuries in Cranbourne, after he answered the offender’s directions query, on Saturday 23 April at 2.30pm. The Good Samaritan was punched to the back of the head, kicked and wrestled to the ground, before the offender stole his wallet and phone and sped off in a waiting car. Det Hedge said the violent nature of the kerb side attacks is “alarming”. “There is certainly a spate of them going on- what it’s attributed to who knows.” Another male was taken advantage of by a passing motorist in Berwick on Wednesday 27 April. The pedestrian had his phone snatched from his hands while making a phone call on behalf of the offender who told him he had lost his dog. Det Hedge’s response to the good-natured victims was their unquestioning nature. “I guess people are trusting and don’t think that these people who are asking for assistance are going to turn on them and rob them,” he said. “People would like to believe they can still walk the streets alone and help someone in need without fear of being robbed.” But the brazen criminals continued to

pounce in May, targeting an 18-year-old man near the Berwick railway station. A trio of crooks demanded the victim’s wallet and phone after putting him a headlock on Sunday 8 May, about 1.30am. The teenager handed over his possessions and called police. The spike in drive-by robberies have occurred throughout late April and early May and Det Hedge called the incidence “relative to other issues” police face in the south-east. “I’m not going to say they are apex gangrelated, but we are experiencing an increase in car thefts, aggravated burglaries and street robberies across the board,” he said. “And the Casey CIU along with a taskforce out of Dandenong investigate these connections and types of offending.” A more recent street side attempted robbery involved a gun in Cranbourne South. A man described as “dark skinned” by witnesses threatened two men with a gun and a knife on Sunday 8 May about 1.40am. The attempted armed robbery occurred on the corner of Camms Road and the South Gippsland Highway and the two male victims managed to run toward the Settlement Hotel unscathed. The offender, described as muscly with dark hair demanded the wallets and phones of the 26 and 25-year-old males. Det Hedge said one of the only things pedestrians could do was to be mindful of their surroundings. “The violence is so random and sometimes unnecessary because often the victim hands over their belongings without resistance, but are still being assaulted badly,” Det Hedge said. “Some of these places aren’t even dim or dark; they are busy streets with security cameras near. “Both young and older people are targeted and the only thing to layer between these is that they are picking vulnerable people who are often walking alone.”

Letters Redneck prayers answered LOCAL residents have been fighting any development that would compromise the rural, landscape and environmental qualities of Narre Warren North and Harkaway. They have been doing so with success for more than 20 years. The proposed Saarban Islamic mosque presented a major threat to these qualities. We would have opposed a Christian cathedral complex with equal vigour. Shame on all who have turned it into an exercise in rabid, self-righteous political correctness. You have done more damage to the cause of harmonious multiculturalism than any extremist redneck group could hope for in their wildest dreams. Maureen Beavis, Narre Warren North.

I WOULD like to congratulate our Mayor Sam Aziz for not spending $12,000 on billboards on the Monash Freeway to call in graffiti. It is also good to hear the State Government is handing over $300,000 to VicRoads for the removal of graffiti. I don’t want to personally attack our mayor as I know he has a tough job but as the president of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association I need to keep council in check with their wasteful spending. THE Sheriff of Nottingham strikes again He robs from the poor and gives to the rich. Age pensioners look like they are the ones to receive the big cuts to incomes. They will subsidize the tax cuts for those 25 per cent of Australians on higher incomes. What pensioners lose on the loss of energy supplement those on $80,000 or more will gain as reduced tax. Scott Morrison took from age pensioners last year. They are hit again. The poor will continue to subsidize the wealth creation schemes of the tax avoiders and those who negative gear property. This is a tax concession that distorts the property market and diverts financial resources from investment in increasing the productive capacity of the nation. Those on $80,000 per annum or more will continue to have available for them more tax avoidance opportunities. The massive subsidies to superannuation for high income earners has only been slightly adjusted. Meanwhile those on average incomes will continue to face massive bracket creep. What will be the response of our local federal member for La Trobe? My guess he won’t stand up for his constituents but will fall in with the party line. When will we have genuine liberal democrat politicians? John Farquharson, Berwick.

Socially speaking Stranger danger on the streets OMG this is getting ridiculous. We can’t do anything anymore without fear of being attacked or robbed. It’s None Of Our Business But ... CASEY residents have saved the equivalent of 24 backyard pools of waste from landfill. Statistics from Planet Arc’s product stewardship program Cartridges 4 Planet Ark shows Casey residents and businesses recycled 25,541 printer cartridges in the past year. This means 260,506 printer cartridges have been saved from clogging up landfill sites since 2003 by Casey residents. If sent to landfill, printer cartridges can take between 450 and 1000 years to break down. IT SEEMED like someone swallowed the angry pills prior to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court sitting on 9 May. After unloading on a police prosecutor, a fired-up man was given his marching orders from a case consultation. The man was apparently facing a charge of steroid possession. His accompanying girlfriend was asked by a bemused prosecutor if the man had been recently taking the illicit substance.

COMMUTERS flooded Twitter with complaints about Narre Warren railway station’s saturated car park. Kath Stammers tweeted on 10 May: “Oh look it’s rained at Narre Warren station again”, accompanied by an image of the car park submerged in shallow waters. Ms Stammers told Star News it was the third time in two months the car park had flooded. A Metro Trains spokeswoman said the local creek’s waters had risen above the drain pipe level, which impeded draining, which happened “time to time“ during heavy rainfall. In the long term, Metro Trains was working with Casey Council to create a better drainage system, the spokeswoman said. “Our maintenance team is currently investigating the issue and is engaging a third party to assist with trough cleaning (clearing the blockage) to eliminate the water in the car park.“

Little Charli from Narre Warren South proved just how much she loved her mum in the lead up to Mother's Day writing her a special message and sticking it to a wall 'of love' at Casey Central Shopping Centre. To honour local mums, the shopping centre erected a Mother's Day Wall of Love. By Sunday, the wall was covered in hundreds of Post-it notes. The centre received a massive number of messages which ranged from cheeky stories to moving tributes. 153714

FREE CONSULTATION FOR BRACES

By JARROD MCALEESE CONSTRUCTION has commenced at the Casey Fields Cycling Precinct on a $2.87 million project that includes a new BMX track, car park, pavilion and track lighting in an initiative that will provide upgraded facilities for the racing community. Joined by City of Casey Deputy Mayor Mick Morland, Balla Balla Ward Cr Geoff Ablett and Mayfield Ward Cr Amanda Stapledon, State Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera turned the first sod on 6 May to mark the beginning of the building process, made possible due to a $1.37 million Labor Government contribution. Mr Perera said that the project will make the Casey Fields Cycling Precinct a hub for local racing enthusiasts. “We’re getting it done for cyclists and BMX fans all over Casey. This upgrade will provide a fabulous home for budding riders to do what they love, Mr Perera said. With the popularity of BMX booming in the City of Casey, City of Casey Mayor Aziz said he was delighted to provide residents with ground-breaking, event-grade facilities to match the sport’s interest. “Figures show that Casey is home to a large number of registered BMX riders and that is only going to continue to grow, so there is both an immediate and future demand for a BMX racing facility within the municipality. “The new track will be the first BMX racing facility in the City of Casey, providing infrastructure that will enable state and national competitions, Cr Aziz said.

LOCALS are solving crimes for Casey police officers within a couple of hours. The Casey Eyewatch Facebook page, run out of the Narre Warren Police Station, appeals to the public for help with investigations. And its success rate is picking up by the minute. Page co-ordinator Senior Constable Laura Carter said social media was proving to be a huge help in solving missing persons cases and criminal investigations. “We have about a 50 per cent strike rate with the public supplying us with information that leads to identification of a person of interest,” Sen Const Carter said. “I know that doesn’t sound like much but it is, because it’s information we otherwise wouldn’t have.” And it was quick thinking Casey residents who contacted relevant officers within hours of a Facebook post that had two thieves caught in record time. “The page had solved two pharmacy thefts in a couple of hours through the power of social media,” Sen Const Carter said. Sen Const Carter said it’s common for missing people to walk into the police station and ask for their picture to be taken down. “They’ll say I’m not missing - I just don’t want to go home,” she said. The Casey page is updated weekly and Sen Const Carter said investigations can be solved faster if members of the public contact the investigator directly rather than Crime Stoppers. A FORMER Casey councillor and a problem-gambling activist are among a field of rivals contesting Liberal MP Jason Wood’s seat in the 2 July Federal Election. Mr Wood holds La Trobe by a 4 per cent margin after winning the seat back from the ALP’s Laura Smyth in 2013. The 562-square kilometre electorate - which includes Beaconsfield, Berwick, parts of Narre Warren, Narre Warren North and Narre Warren South as well as much of the Dandenongs - has largely been a Liberal stronghold since 1990. Mr Wood, 47, a former member of Victoria Police counter-terrorism and organised crime units, had previously held the seat between 2004-’10. He sits on the Federal joint standing committee on intelligence and security. Mr Wood’s declared opponents in La Trobe include former Casey councillor Simon Curtis (ALP) - a teacher at Beaconsfield College and president of Berwick Football Club. Tom Cummings, a former problem gambler who is standing on a gambling-reform platform, is representing The Greens. In neighbouring Holt, MP Anthony Byrne holds his safe Labor seat by a 19 per cent margin. His declared rivals are 21-year-old Liberal candidate James Matthias - who would be the youngest serving federal

Jason Wood sits in City of Casey’s most marginal federal seat. MP if elected - and Greens candidate Jack Tilton. The seat includes suburbs Clyde, Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Hallam, Hampton Park, Narre Warren, Narre Warren North and Narre Warren South. Mr Byrne first won Holt at a 1999 by-election. His party has held the seat since 1980. He is deputy chair of the Federal joint statutory committee for intelligence and security, and a former parliamentary secretary to PM Kevin Rudd and for trade.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Greg Hunt sits on a massive 22-per cent margin in the Flinders electorate, which includes Cranbourne South and Western Port towns such as Kooweerup. The Liberal MP’s declared opponents include ALP candidate Carolyn Gleixner, The Greens’ Willisa Hogarth and Non-Custodial Parents Party’s John Zabaneh. The seat has been held by the Liberal Party for 61 of the past 62 years.

KIALLA DELIVERS THE COMPLETE PACKAGE THERE are no hidden extras, Kialla Homes is the complete package. When buying a new home the last thing anyone wants to do is spend money on luxury inclusions to complete the home. That’s why Kialla Homes is offering the Complete Package that provides so many extras for just $5500. The package includes quality fitting and fixtures for the kitchen such as 20mm Caesarstone benchtops, 900mm Westinghouse appliances and a stainless steel Dishlex dishwasher. In the laundry there is a fully laminated fit out including basket drawer and each bathroom has a tiled shower base to add to that feeling of quality as well as providing an enduring surface. And to keep floors looking smooth and luxurious for years to come Kialla Homes has added the innovative Range laminated flooring in the entry, kitchen, meals, family and rear passage. Kialla also hasn’t forgotten the little details that are so important. In the summer new owners don’t have to worry about mozzies as every opening window is fitted with flyscreens. Kialla Homes general manager Danny Muller said these elements are what people should expect in their new home. “After 30 years of building homes in south-east we know what people want and we know how disappointed buyers are when they are confronted with a long options list that quickly takes the sticker price of a home way beyond what is being advertised,” he said He said Kialla’s aim was to sell a complete home that a buyer could move in to for the price it is advertised.

That is why Kialla Homes has a long list of standard features buyers pay extra for with other builders including. These include 2700mm high ceilings throughout, brickwork above windows and doors, 75mm scotia cornice throughout, panel lift doors to the garage with remote control and two handsets and the Haymes three-coat paint system. There is also the exclusive Seima Kyra basin range and chrome mixer taps throughout, locks to all doors and windows,

Rinai infinity 26 litre endless hot water system and feature trilock entry door. “We want buying a new Kialla Home to be a great experience that includes everything you would expect in a new home and more. “We want the luxuries you choose to be luxurious not necessities. That’s why we have created our Complete Package,” Danny said. For further information contact Kialla Homes, 5941 3996. kiallahomes.com.au T HP

RESIDENTIAL developer Villawood Properties is calling on local community groups to apply for funding through its annual Community Grants program. The grants, which range in individual value from $500 to $1000, are available to groups which operate in the City of Casey and the immediate surrounding area. They are part of a broader program whereby Villawood Properties supports local community groups. “The City of Casey and its surrounds is growing at a rapid rate and while such growth has many benefits, it is also accompanied by increased demand on community organisations and the services they provide,” said Villawood Properties CEO Paul Banks. “With such growth, the role of local community groups in providing critical community support, and encouraging activity and social interaction, becomes even more important. “What’s more is that they often have to make do with very limited resources. “The fact that they occupy such a key community-building role is something which resonates strongly at Villawood Properties. “This is why supporting local community groups wherever we operate is so important to us. “Whether it’s a hobby group, a sporting club or a local volunteering chapter, they provide individuals with a sense of belonging, which happens to be Villawood Properties’ central aim when we create our communities.” This year approximately 80 community groups along Australia’s eastern seaboard will benefit through the Villawood Properties community grants and sponsorship initiative. Further, Villawood Properties, along with builder Henley, auctions a home each year as part of the Good Friday Appeal with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Villawood Properties has created or is currently creating a number of communities in the Casey region. These are: Delaray in Clyde North, award-winning Marriott Waters in Lyndhurst, Pasadena in Clyde with the striking Hill Farm Park and Aquarevo in

Lyndhurst. Grant applications close on Friday 27 May. For more information on how to submit an application visit www.delaray.com.au/ CommunityGrants.

Behaviour bond over driving off By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

The 2015 Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life committee spreading the positivity.

Relay launch is on track BY JARROD McALEESE CRANBOURNE and Narre Warren residents are invited to the Relay for Life launch at the Casey Fields Athletics Track on Friday 27 May. Relay for Life is a chance for the community to celebrate with cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and help raise funds to combat cancer. The launch will provide attendees with the chance to meet fellow participants and speak with 2016 Cran-

bourne-Narre Relay for Life committee members. Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life has raised more than $300,000 in its four year existence and has set its 2016 fundraising goal at $145,000. Berwick Show Star Search for a Cause and Casey’s Got Talent 2015 winner Shanelle Jacobs will provide entertainment for the event and Relay for Life volunteer committee member Brooke Walford encourages locals to spread the word and pop in to learn more about the cause.

“Invite your Relay for Life team and friends as the launch is guaranteed to be enjoyable and will ensure, together, we all will make Cranbourne-Narre 2016 Relay for Life a success,” Ms Walford said. Those who are unable to attend the launch but are interesting in participating in the Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life event, which will be held on 5 and 6 November, can get more information on 1300 65 65 85 or visit www.relayforlife.org.au.

A DROUIN man who pleaded guilty to a petrol drive-off, drug offences and stealing two window frames has been put on a two-year good-behaviour bond. Timothy Gatt, 39, had stolen $142 of premium unleaded during the driveoff from a Cranbourne servo last year, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 9 May. He also admitted to stealing the window frames from a building site in the Hunt Club estate, Cranbourne East. Last year, police seized pills, a glass pipe, cannabis and deal bags of white powder - believed to be illicit substances - from Gatt’s car as he changed a tyre on Princes Highway, Dandenong, the court was told. Two deal bags of ice were also found in his car’s cup holder during a police intercept in Knoxfield in November. Gatt was said to have lived “quite a normal life” until a recent serious motorbike crash, the court heard. As a result, Gatt suffered a brain injury. He has since been afflicted by anxiety and depression as well as impulsivity and a lack of regulation over his emotions, his lawyer said. Gatt’s offending was clearly caused by his subsequent drug use - which was a form of self-medication, the lawyer said. He had received psychiatric treat-

ment from Associate Professor Warrick Brewer for his drug use in 2013 until his funding ran out. Police prosecutor Senior Constable Dani Lord said the community would expect a higher sentence than a goodbehaviour bond. A community corrections order (CCO) would offer more focused treatment as well as offender behaviour programs, Sen Const Lord said. She noted the previous psychiatric treatment had failed to resolve Gatt’s issues. Gatt’s lawyer said a CCO would be too punitive. Gatt was instead able to resume treatment with Assoc Prof Brewer, funded by a substantial payout as a result of being a victim of an assault. Magistrate Carolene Gwynn noted that it was important for Gatt to address his drug issues due to the associated offending and its impact on the community. Ms Gwynn said Assoc Prof Brewer’s report demonstrated Gatt was “out of the usual category of offending”. She convicted Gatt and “with some trepidation” sentenced him to a two-year adjourned undertaking under the direction of Assoc Prof Brewer. Because of Gatt’s previous convictions and serious offending, Ms Gwynn ordered Gatt to provide police with a DNA sample.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Sampson’s ‘plasticity’ secret to success By ALANA MITCHELSON TODD Sampson is balanced upon a three-centimetre wide wire, with a 21-storey drop on either side of him. His eyes are fixed directly ahead. After an initial shaky failed attempt, Sampson combines all of the skills he has trained his mind to learn over the past four years to examine the human brain’s potential. He focuses all his energy on slowly making his way to the opposite building. As his feet find the concrete, the 46-yearold collapses into the foetal position and breaks down in tears. Up until that moment in the Redesign My Brain television series, it is easy to forget that Todd Sampson is no superhuman. But Sampson has challenged himself above and beyond the perceived capacity of most ’ordinary’ people. He has climbed a 120 metre rockface in Utah’s Moab desert blindfolded, Neville Waterman spoke about the Casey Cardinia Business Hub at the breakfast. 153990

Pictures: GARY SISSONS

successfully performed a blindfolded Houdini water escape with 30 kilograms of chains and five combination locks, and completed a skywalk between two 21-storey buildings without a safety net. The adventurer attributed his success in each instance to the science of brain plasticity: forced adaptation to dramatically improve and “redesign“ the brain. He admitted to a packed room of Casey Cardinia businesspeople that his skywalk had not resulted in him conquering fear. But he had conquered the ultimate test of regulating his emotions to achieve a goal. “For years science has told us that our brains are fixed, that our brains develop until we’re about 25 and then roughly around the age of 30 there is a steady decline,“ he said. “Now we know that this science is false. There is no biological reason for our brains to become less flexible as we age.

“All that separates the ordinary from the extraordinary is access. The human brain has the capability to hold information equivalent to 500 encyclopaedias. Everyone can be extraordinary. “It comes down to us challenging the series of highways in our minds and to think more creatively rather than always travelling down the same road. That’s the revolution.“ Sampson said the most important skill in business today was “mental flexibility“, a characteristic that each of the most successful people to have walked the planet have in common. He said there were a number of ways to improve brain plasticity including forced adaptation, visualisation techniques to improve memory capacity, and meditation to help concentration and stress. “A great example of forced adaptation that everyone can try at home is to brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. You’ll notice it’s a difficult task but the more you train your brain, the easier it becomes,“ Sampson said. “Lack of sleep is one of the biggest challenges. Less than eight hours a night over time reduces your IQ. We consolidate memories as we sleep and that’s when the plasticity process happens.“ Sampson described the fear he experienced during his skywalk as “excitement without breath“. “The brave are not without fear. The part of the brain responsible for fear - the amygdala - is not born blank,“ he said. “We all live with levels of fear and anxiety. But it can be managed to the point where fear is no longer an issue.“

Todd Sampson.

Golden note in built band By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SOUTH-EAST musicians have come up gold. Three of the region’s most talented performers were picked for Melbourne radio station, GOLD 104.3s, ‘Build-A-Band’ competition and one hailing from Cranbourne. The Jo and Lehmo show asked listeners to, quite literally, build them a band to perform at their Pure Gold Live concert, at the Palais Theatre on Friday 13 May. And Melbourne chose wisely. Dubbed ‘Band of Gold’, the group is made up of five musicians, and includes a Pakenham guitarist, Cranbourne bass guitarist and a drummer from Cockatoo. Cranbourne’s Brendan Parsons was voted the best man to play bass guitar by GOLD’s listeners. The 27-year-old warehouse worker told GOLD’s Jo and Lehmo that “music is everything” to him. “Can’t imagine not playing music. I have recurring dreams of being on stage and my stuff not working and it happened.” Rikki, the only female band member, had her first drum kit at age 12. The 24-year-old warehouse worker from Cockatoo told Jo and Lehmo she’d practice on her mum and dad’s pots and pans as a youngster. She told the station, “It means everything to me - all I want to do is play music - I think about it every day all day.“ Pakenham lead guitarist, James McGrath, was also lucky enough to grab a spot in the rock band.

Nash is already a champ By RUSSELL BENNETT NASH Simunic has less than two weeks ahead of him before he takes off for the BMX World Championships in Medellin, Colombia. The Endeavour Hills six-year-old knows the exact amount of days left before his flight, because he’s ticked them off on a calendar every morning since the ‘75 days remaining’ mark. Travelling half-way around the world to compete on the global scale in Colombia would be a daunting prospect for almost anyone, but not Nash. He can’t wait to represent his country on the biggest stage. And if his young age didn’t make his journey remarkable enough, he’s only been competing in the sport of a little over a year. In that time he’s competed all over Victoria, as well as in the Oceanias in New Zealand in January. And now he can’t wait for his first shot at the big-time - the first step in what he hopes will one day be a rise to the level of his heroes, Australian BMX superstars Sam Willoughby and Bodi Turner. “They’re my favourites - I’ve had my picture taken with both of them!” Nash beamed. In fact, the sport of BMX racing is such a tightknit community that he even managed to have a photo with Bodi Turner just minutes before one of his races in New Zealand. Unfortunately, it’s not a mainstream sport so funding in BMX is particularly limited.

Nash Simunic can’t wait to wear the Australian green and gold in Colombia later this month. 154048 Pictures: RUSSELL BENNETT

Still, Nash is doing his part to increase its profile. His best friends Anthony and Adrian have shown a willingness to get involved, as well as his “girlfriend” Ella. But in order to become a BMX racer at the highest level, they’ll need a combination of core strength, impeccable technique, and raw speed and

Nash has all three in spades. The Knox BMX track is his home base, but he travels to all parts to train and compete. His father Dario is accompanying him to Colombia, and he says the trip over there and the World Championship, itself, are all about gaining experiences to last a lifetime. For someone

at the age of six to get that opportunity is so incredibly rare. “This is the first time he’s done it, and if he gets through the knockout stage then fantastic, we’d be rapt,” Dario said. “Then after that it’s all about luck. “He’s going to miss seven or eight days of school but the experiences he’s

going to have in that time are going to last a lifetime - he’s going to be able to write school reports on them.” Just think of the show-and-tell at school when he returns ... The 2016 UCI BMX World Championships will be held from 25-29 May. To keep up with Nash’s progress, search for ‘Nash Simunic’ on Facebook.

Cavaliers romp home in pink By JARROD POTTER

BIG V - ROUND 7 WHAT do you call it? The Casey crush? Cavalier containment? Baird’s barrier? However you spin it, Casey’s unrelenting BIG V defence claimed a fresh victim on Saturday night - this time curtailing Geelong in a 79-67 suffocation. Wearing the pink jerseys for the club’s most popular night of the season - Ballin’ for Breast Cancer - the Cavaliers went three-for-three to celebrate the occasion properly. Tins rattled, auctioneers thundered out last call and raffled tickets were frenetically sold all night in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). Casey wasn’t just pink on the jumpers though; the faces quickly turned rosy as it worked hard to negate the likes of Terrance Motley (24 points, 13 rebounds) and Paul Hutchison (14 points, nine rebounds). There was a blanket thrown over the visitors’ offensive end as the Cavaliers senior men snuffed the game out by half-time, keeping the Supercats to only 24 points when they walked back down the race at The Fortress. Casey’s defence was stretched slightly in the second half, but for a side that’s accustomed to scoring cen-

turies and 90s, Geelong was held back brilliantly across the night by the overwhelming Cavaliers’ D. Mitch Chapman (20 points, four rebounds, three assists) was sensational while James Deneefe (11 points) found some room out wide, Dean Johnson (10 points) toiled in the key and Brent Hobba (seven points, 13 rebounds) and Ben Louis (eight points, seven rebounds) made the most of limited minutes due to foul trouble. “Surprisingly though I wasn’t really happy defensively in the second half - so I’m a bit of a scrooge aren’t I?” coach Stewart Baird said. “We held them to 24 in the first half, and they got 43 in the second, but it’s hard to keep that intensity up and we had some guys in foul trouble that we had to put on the bench. “In the bigger scheme of things, it’s a great effort, and I spoke to them prior to the game about unity and playing as a group and that’s going to be our catch phrase for the rest of the year - being one in everything we do.” Shooting? Not as promising with the Cavs only hitting 79 points as Baird thought the polish on the final touch was lacking from the talls on Saturday. “We ended up shooting 36 per cent and really it was the bigs that let us down - those little ones from not far away,” Baird said. “But you have nights like that when it will be one

guy, but tonight we had two or three, so that’s life and got to work with it.” “We held them to 31 per cent and our goal is to hold them below 40 so we’ll take that.” Baird praised his latest former SEABL recruit as Chapman lit up the court and drove most of Casey’s best moments on Saturday night. “Chapman, stiff not to get the MVP just quietly, I thought he was a good court leader,” Baird said. “Kept us under control offensively and scored himself when we needed him to - he’s value for our group for sure.” In further important news, coach Baird let the elastic return for onetime-only this season as Ash “Headband” Szalek (four points) was allowed to live up to his nickname once again - this time a stylish pink number. “If I don’t give him that one a year, then he goes mentally like a marshmallow,” Baird said. Casey’s women claimed a 63-40 win as the Pink Ladies unloaded on Melbourne Uni through Amy Mcfarlane (22 points), Tarryn Wilkin (12 points, 16 rebounds) and Ruchelle McCracken (9 points, 15 rebounds). Casey’s youth men started the night with a pretty-in-pink 65-40 win before knocking over Warrnambool on Sunday afternoon 66-81, showing the side’s skill and endurance despite the ridiculous round seven double-header.

The big time By JARROD POTTER

Eagles show their strength in the air (four goals) - who clearly has an eye on the league goal kicking medal after jagging another bag. Jade Hough, Aliesha Hamilton, Millie Shone and Georgia Anderson impressed across the field as Beaconsfield claimed its third win of the maiden season. Hallam was knocked over by Mornington 4.8 (32) to 5.11 (41), with Tamisha Gerbeck, Megan Connell and Katie Cornish the best of the Hawks’ brigade. Endeavour Hills’ opened its Division 1 season with a hardfought 4.7 (31) to 1.8 (14) triumph over Darebin, on the back of the elite work from the Wallaces - Sarah (two goals) and Jess - as well as Ash Ladson, Amanda Hancock and Bec Sadler. Endeavour Hills’ second side was thumped 4.5 (29) to Mount Eliza’s 21.19 (145).

an effective fourth rover at the coalface. Her sister Breann Moody was just as impressive - learning the ruck trade while heading up forward to generate more headaches for the opposition - while Tess McEvoy, Alicia Johnson, Kirsten Mcleod and Corrine Cullis also impressed. Cranbourne’s goal-kicking was the only downside of the victory - just missing out on the 100-point mark on account of 12 sprayed behinds, but nonetheless, Eagles coach Kris Smith remained impressed with the triumph. “Do we have to talk about the goal-kicking?” Smith said. “If we nailed those goals wet weather footy, you have to allow for it a bit - but we really could’ve done a number on them. “That’s a game we should win and we did so that’s what I’m happy with - the first home win (in the VFL) and I’ll enjoy this one.” Cranbourne will host sixth placed VU Western Spurs (formerly St Albans) on Sunday at Casey Fields. VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 5 SINGING the song for the first time on home soil, Cranbourne had no troubles shaking off Knox and the turbulent conditions to run out 13.12 (90) to 2.2 (14) victors. The VWFL Division 1 grand final rematch lived up to its prematch billing early on Sunday, as the first term showed glimpses of a decent contest. The Falcons booted two goals to stick with the harder, stronger Eagles and generally dove on the loose footy and fought to stay in the match. Cranbourne’s five-first term majors would’ve been enough to take the points there and then though as Knox’s forward initiatives fell apart after quarter time. The fleet-footed hosts surged across the tundra - making sure there would be something to celebrate at the end of the bleak afternoon. While Ash Fennell (work) and Danielle Hardiman (soreness) were out of action, there were plenty of others willing to do the hard yards. The Eagles kicked away gradually, as the rain fell heavier at Casey Fields to turn the ground into an homage to the slip-and-slide, and ensured there would be no further fightback from the visitors. Ruck Cara Moody continued her stellar start to 2016, monstering the hit-outs while also staying in the contest at ground level - giving the Eagles

CRANBOURNE and Lyndhurst junior female footballers traded their local jumpers for a taste of the big time this week. Cranbourne’s Kayla Ripari and Courtney Jones as well as Lyndhurst livewire Emily Browning ran out onto the MCG on Friday night and were treated to an absolute display of dominance. Whether Eagle or Lightning, the trio shone in Vic Metro’s 95-point demolition of Western Australia to take out the AFL Youth Girls National Championships for the second consecutive season. Vic Metro stole the show from Western Australia and the hosts made sure the home of football became its happiest hunting ground yet. It was as clinical a performance as ever seen on the MCG, as the Metropolitan charges left no stone unturned en route to its second consecutive national championship. Jones and Ripari flew across the wings all week long while Browning was the hard-edged inside force Vic Metro called upon when the going got rough. “It’s a really good moment I played last year and we didn’t really win by this much so it’s really good,” Jones said. “At first I was really nervous, but as the game went on I just got better and better and it was great to just have the team mates there

0-0, start again, let’s keep trying harder and not worry about the scoreboard until the end of the game,” Jones said. She’ll take away the memories of back-to-back flags, but Jones said it was made all the better to be around a brilliant group of players, coaches and trainers. Just being able to be in the team, be in the moment and be around a great group,” Jones said. “I just can’t describe how much I love them all; it’s great to have them by my side and it was a fantastic week ... Go Vic Metro!” Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman said Jones, Ripari and Browning were pivotal parts of the Metro structure and had well and truly deserved their spots in the premiership winning side. It wasn’t all great news for the Cranbourne region though; up-and-coming midfielder Georgia Gourlay cruelly missed the carnival after re-rupturing her anterior cruciate ligament. Gourlay played a few minutes of last year’s Youth Girls carnival when she suffered the first injury, before returning to the field earlier this year and having the injury reoccur in her first game back. She underwent surgery to repair her knee this week and remained upbeat, saying she was looking ahead to 2017 and making the Vic Metro team once again.

Wickers cranking it up a few gears By DAVID NAGEL BERWICK has rubber-stamped its premiership-favouritism tag in SEFNL with a brilliant 31-point victory over Cranbourne at Edwin Flack Reserve. The only downside for the Wickers stems from an investigation that is taking place into a last-quarter hit by co-captain Madi Andrews that left Cranbourne midfielder Mat Fletcher knocked out and motionless on the ground. But the real story on Saturday was the Wickers ability to absorb a thrilling start from Cranbourne and take control of the contest as the day wore on. Cranbourne kicked three goals in the opening four minutes, and then defied what seemed to be a Berwick bias around the ground to draw within three points at the 15-minute mark of the third term. But the Wickers slipped into another gear, impressing coach Rhys Nisbet with six of the next seven goals to extend out to a match-win-

ning lead. “That was clearly our performance for the year, we stepped it up a level against good opposition in a high-quality game of footy,” Nisbet said. Madi Andrews was brilliant for the Wickers, running himself into the ground, while Luke Sheppard and Ash Smith were at their instinctive best across half back. Tim Gunn and Luke Nelson covered for the relatively quiet days of Ben Kearns and Mark Weekes, kicking five and four goals respectively, while Kurt Batt showed some quality in his first game in navy blue. Aaron Bower, Dylan Cavalot and Luke Bee-Hugo were best for the Eagles, while Marc Holt kicked three from limited opportunities. At Pakenham, six goals to Ryan Hendy and four to Darren Allen helped steer Doveton to a nine-point victory in a high-scoring affair at Toomuc Reserve. Pakenham had similar contributions from key-forward Ben Fraser, five goals, and left-footed maestro

Luke Walker, four, but in the end the Doves had the answers when it mattered most - the final quarter. The Lions led by 15 points early in the final term before the Doves kicked six of the next eight goals, with goals to Hendy, Allen and Russell Gabriel putting the imperial seal on victory. Doveton defender Tommy Agar was too brave for his own good, knocked out, but it seemed to inspire his side in the dying stages. Sam Raru, Aaron Davey and Ryan Morrison were all effective for the Doves, while Fraser played his best game for the Lions. Stevie Wright was determined in a tagging role on Davey, while Chris Cardona and Beau Wheeler stood firm on a day when defenders were constantly under the pump. Narre Warren made it three wins on the trot after an electrifying start led to a 137-point victory over Hampton Park at Fox Road. A 9.5 to 1.1 first term led to a 52-point lead, allowing coach Heath Black to experiment with Cranbourne and Berwick on the horizon.

Darren Sheen kicked six, Jake Richardson four, while Dean Kelly and season-debutant Kain Baskaya slotted three apiece. Jayce Kelly and Nathan Reid played well for the Maggies while Cory Phillips never stopped trying for the Redbacks. And finally, Officer made it two wins from its last three games with a grinding 33-point win over Tooradin at Starling Road. Defensively the Kangas gradually turned the screws against the Seagulls, allowing them 3.5 in the first, 3.1 in the second, 1.3 in the third, before basically suffocating them with a one-point final term. Brandon Moore continued his fine form for the winners, while Nick Redley, Blair Allan and Matt Clarke snagged two each. Andrew Dean and Paddy Chin slotted a couple each for the Seagulls, while the Muling boys, Adam and Josh, continue to set a high standard around the ground. Beaconsfield had the bye.

Ladder shake-up points to vulnerable By DAVID NAGEL THE vulnerability of sides with heavy VNL commitments came to the fore on Saturday with Hampton Park and Tooradin suffering huge losses as a consequence. ROC’s emphatic 57-18 victory over the in-form Tooradin could inspire the Kangaroos, and give them a real sense of purpose after winning two of their last three outings. Brilliant performances from Sam Neil (GA), who herself scored 13 goals in a quarter on Saturday- and the midcourt dash of Ash Barnett (C), Gemma Stacey (WA) and Sophie Tracey (WD) showed that their win against Pakenham in round three was definitely no fluke. The Kangaroos scored 18 goals in a quarter - that’s brilliant netball in anyone’s language. But - as good as the Kangaroos were - this

result definitely says more about the Seagulls than the Roos. What it says is that the Seagulls rely heavily on their bookends, Kelly Haynes (GS) and Jess Maher (GK), who were both missing on Saturday as they prepared for their Peninsula Waves outing on Saturday night. Pakenham girls can thank their lucky stars they had a huge lead tucked away under their bibs after falling asleep in the last quarter for a 42-39 victory over Doveton at Toomuc Reserve. After an even start the Lions roared away in the second and third quarters, Lauren Briggs (GS) in sensational touch under the ring, sharing the scoring duties with daughter Michelle (GA) in the second quarter, and with Chloe Maas (GA) in the third. All the usual suspects played a

part, with Meaghan Winter ((WA) and Rebecca Cox (WD) working wonderfully well either side of Meaghan Musgrave (C) in the middle, while Olivia Hunt ((GD) and Samantha Jelo (GK) were brilliant during that middle phase of play. Samantha Kappl scored 28 goals for the Doves, who had Breanne Miller (WA), Linda Hunt (WD) and Abbey Dean (C) try hard through the midcourt. A fast-start has failed to provide Berwick with its first win of the season, the Wickers mowed down by a fast-finishing Cranbourne outfit, 4333, at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers had the Eagles under wraps in the first half, taking a one-goal lead, as Sarah McDermott (C), Emily La Roche (WD) and Katrina Meredith (WA) had control of the midcourt. But a change came over the game

in the second half, Alanah Hardy (GA) shooting brilliantly as Tegan Stahl (GS) turned provider. Darcy O’Donnell and Ash Honan shared the ‘C’ bib with full effect in the second half as the eagles piled on 26 goals to 15. And finally, last year’s grand final replay turned into bit of a fizzer with Narre Warren giving Hampton Park a 53-14 thrashing at Kalora Park. The Magpies were particularly brilliant in the first half, Tayla Shannon scoring 21 goals as the home side kicked out to a 29-5 lead. Tayla handed over to Kealeigh Brown (GA) in the second half, with TerriLee Brettoner (GD) and Carly Stagg (WA) also getting some rare court time in A Grade. Jessica Wilkie and Amber Dunn-Marler did show some promising signs for the Redbacks. Beaconsfield had the bye.

Pakenham co-captain Meaghan Musgrave leads Doveton’s Allee Pastras to the ball at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. The Lions held off the fast-finishing Doves 42-39. 153856 Picture: GARY SISSONS

This Merc is a performer By EWAN KENNEDY THE Mercedes-Benz A-Class received a facelift at the start of 2016. At $53,500 the A 250 Sport is relatively easy on the bank account and provides a solid turn of performance that’s fine for everyday use. For the 2016 season A-Class gets additional technology, with all versions now having adap-

tive suspension and satellite navigation. The Mercedes A 180 has 17-inch wheels, Garmin Map Pilot navigation, blind spot assist, reversing camera, keyless start, Dynamic Select modes and a sporty diamond grille in black as standard. The A 200 has 18-inch wheels and sports seats with lumber support. The ultra-hot AMG A 45 4Matic now produces 280 kW (up from 265 kW) and can get from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in just 4.2 seconds. We will cover powertrain details of our A 250 Sport test car in a moment. The A-Class is no longer the tiny car aimed at finding parking spots in overcrowded European cities, the latest generation is longer, sleeker and lower. The so-called diamond grille treatment works well and we found the red paint on our test car a pleasant change from the 500 shades of grey currently making our roads like we’re living in a black-and-white movie. The sports kit on the A250 is anything but shy and retiring and grabbed plenty of looks while we were driving it. Also in a red hue is the stitching on the dark trim on the seats, door and dashboard that certainly tie in with the Sport badges. Ambient interior lighting can be tailored to suit your needs by providing 12 different colours. The 2.0-litre A 250 Sport petrol has 160 kW of power and a wild 475 Nm of torque running through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. It uses the Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, sits on 18-inch AMG wheels, and Ride

Standout style on the Mercedes A250 got plenty of favourable comments during our week’s road test. Control suspension. Five different driving modes are offered, everything from Comfort to Race. The latter, naturally, only intended for track use. In a sign of the times, the days when Mercedes saved up its new high-tech items until a new SClass was introduces have gone. So rapid is the rate of technology change that the company is now, somewhat reluctantly we suspect, forced to add tech to the next model it launches. Waiting for an S-Class would otherwise see it lagging for years behind competitors at times. The A-Class is the first Mercedes model to be available with smartphone integration for Apple

CarPlay and Siri voice control. Mercedes’ latest Comand infotainment system works well and we enjoyed the quality sound system. The latest Mercedes-Benz A-Class has multiple driving assistance systems, including the drowsiness detection system Attention Assist, Distronic Plus, Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Blind Spot Assist. There are nine airbags to minimise damage to the occupants should everything still go wrong. An Active Bonnet setup minimises pedestrian injury in a collision. To test drive the Mercedes inquire at Mercedes Benz Berwick, 518 Princes Highway, Berwick. Phone 1300 622 622 or 8794 0900.
