LET there be light - and thanks to the Yangan and District Progress Association, sure there will be. The progress association has handed over a cheque for $2000 to the local tennis club to keep the organisation - a lifeblood of the community moving forward. The $2000 will go towards upgrading the facility’s lights and allowing more people to use the courts particularly at night. The money was raised by the community at last month’s highly successful Truck Pull in the main streets of the small town. Yangan Tennis Club treasurer Val Wilkinson said the club was grateful to the progress association for its support. She said YADPA had been very instrumental in providing sporting clubs and the like with funds for various projects around the district. YADPA is a non-for-profit organisation that raises money throughout the year through various means- raffles, fundraising events and so on. Val said the tennis courts had been in Yangan for many years and utilised by many
generations of local families. “New synthetic grass was laid about 15 years ago,” she said. “In recent years, money was allocated through a grant allocation and was used to paint the inside and outside of the clubhouse and also place new floor coverings inside.” Val said the only regular fixture at the moment was ladies day on Mondays. “All ladies are welcome, bring the kids and stay for morning tea afterwards,” she said. “Weekends are popular as the weather cools down. Anyone wanting to play a match can hire the courts through Yangan Cash and Carry.” Once the lights are up and running, Val hopes to see the locals get more use of the court “it’s hard for people, everyone is so busy with work etc, but on an evening it’s nice to get down for a hit”. “We have a great facility here, it’s a shame to see it go to waste,” she said. “It has a long history, and if we lose it we aren’t going to get it back.” She said it was hoped to get more people involved and further upgrade the facitlies in the future.

Council shows its safety THE Southern Downs Regional Council has beaten councils from around Australia to win a major prize in the 2016 National Awards for Local Government. The award in the Excellence in Road Safety category has put the local council in the running for the overall 2016 National Award for Excellence in Local Government award to be announced in late June. Just two Queensland councils took out categories in this year’s award. The Excellence in Road Safety Award recognises the work that Southern Downs Regional Council has done with key stakeholders involved with the Backpackers and Seasonal Workers Road Safety Taskforce to implement a campaign of initiatives which are aimed at educating and improving road safety behaviours of young backpackers in the region. Southern Downs Regional Council’s Mayor Tracy Dobie welcomed the
category award announcement by the Minister for Major Projects, Territories and Local Government Paul Fletcher, and praised Taskforce partners for their contributions towards the implementation of the Backpackers and Seasonal Workers Road Safety Campaign. “The taskforce was established and the campaign initiated in 2015 after some fatal crashes involving foreign backpackers and recognition that further road safety education and awareness was required,” she said. “A series of initiatives have been implemented including hard infrastructure, with innovative signage and road markings; road safety marketing materials in the form of banner pens in four languages and flyers; community events to welcome backpackers and seasonal workers to the region; and provision of online materials that highlight issues associated with road safety and the driving conditions that are unique to
Queensland and Australia. “Council’s Chief Executive Officer David Keenan and I will have the privilege of presenting details of the Backpackers and Seasonal Workers Road Safety Campaign to the National Judging Panel in Canberra next week. “This is an exciting opportunity for council and our partners to gain national exposure for this innovative project, and to be considered for the overall National Local Government Award in Excellence, which will be announced in late June. “This campaign has demonstrated a collaborative and integrated approach to educating backpackers and seasonal workers, which has attracted the attention of other local government authorities in Queensland and New South Wales seeking to emulate aspects of these initiatives in their own regions. “I would like to thank everyone
who has been involved in this campaign and I’m hopeful that Southern Downs may win the overall excellence award.” The Backpackers and Seasonal Workers Road Safety Campaign has been undertaken by a taskforce with representation from Southern Downs Regional Council, Stanthorpe Police, Employment Agencies, Fruit and Vegetable Growers, RACQ, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Stanthorpe Road Safety Committee, Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce and accommodation providers. The campaign has been successful in attracting two Safer Queensland Community Grants from Suncorp for initiatives by Southern Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Police Service Stanthorpe. The National Awards for Local Government includes 10 categories. Southern Downs Regional Council and Mackay Regional Council are

A 42-YEAR-OLD Stanthorpe man has been charged with 23 offences following a spate of break and enters in the region. Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland, the Officer in Charge of Stanthorpe police, said officers carried out tasked patrols as a result of continuing investigations, including the execution of a number of search warrants over a recent spate of break and enter offences in the Stanthorpe CBD and surrounding areas. During these operations officers intercepted one male suspect in possession of implements of housebreaking in McGregor Terrace, Stanthorpe, at 8.40pm on Monday night. He said the man admitted to a number of offences and was later charged with a total of 23 offences including breaking in and entering Health and Daily Solutions, Stanthorpe Creche and Kindergarten, Destination Southern Downs, Stanthorpe Rugby League, Southern Downs Regional Council, Lucid Technology, Schnitzerling Real Estate, K & A Builders, Stanthorpe Laundromat, City Backpackers, The Courtyard and Power Tynan Financial Advisors. Senior Sergeant Ireland said the man was charged with drug offences, wilful damage to property and possessing implements used to commit offences. An objection was lodged against granting him bail. Investigating police said that continued inquiries and forensic evidence would lead to more arrests over the offences.

MORE than 220 friends, family, former passengers and bus enthusiasts headed to the Haidley Coaches Lyon Street Headquarters on Saturday afternoon to celebrate an impressive milestone. The iconic Rose City business celebrated 50 years of bus runs and coach trips, and they are still run by the family that originated the business back in 1966. In fact a new generation of Haidleys - the third - now have their bus licences. Don Haidley and his son Cam have, in particular, been a big part of the community keeping locals moving; starting 50 years ago with the Connolly Dam School run. Photographer Terry West was there to capture the fun and the memories as the Haidleys start their next 50 years!

WE ARE in a drought in Warwick and surrounds! Why do we not catch our rain water and channel billions of drought breaking litres into land bladders for irrigation to crops, livestock, farms, dams, rivers and creeks. Are we that stupid? Yes! We are. Donna Nevin, Killarney.
TO THE Minister for Human Services. Dear Minister, Congratulations upon your appointment. Could you please arrange for a new Medicare card for me? My card No. 418365711b expired on 02/2016 and I have not yet received a new one. Federal Government departments (DVA, ATO etc.) have my particulars. Upon phoning the Medicare number several times I received a recorded bleat that they were very busy and I should phone back. Upon visiting Medicare Warwick a girl asked me to take a seat and wait. She could not tell me how long the wait would be, maybe 30 minutes. I noted that several public servant’s desks were vacant with four in attendance. I asked if I should do some shopping and return. She said I would be taken from her list if I did. I asked if I would be seen within an hour. She replied “hopefully”. There was another couple waiting. They told me that they had been waiting for one and a half hours on their phone for service to no avail. After about 20 minutes, as two other couples who had arrived after me had been called in for processing and no action was taken re my very simple request, I left. Hopefully, some person in your office can acknowledge receipt of this letter and arrange for a replacement card to be issued before the next federal election. J. E. G. Pickering, Warwick.
Double dip CLIVE Palmer has seen the writing on the wall and won’t be recontesting his seat of Fairfax. This comes as no surprise. Clive hasn’t been doing that well lately and has had his name dragged through the media mud as a result of his financial dealings. Clive is now tossing up whether to run for the Senate. This makes sense if he wants to keep a seat in Parliament. I bet Clive is hoping there will be a double dissolution election as it means the percentages he needs to take the senate seat will be halved. I imagine Pauline Hanson has her fingers crossed as well hoping for a double dissolution will deliver a Senate seat her way too. However, you can be sure that PM Malcolm is well aware that a double dissolution election will favour those who might otherwise not even be in the running for a Senate seat. Clive, with his millions in advertising potential, may just be a shoo in for the Senate, not so all the other unknowns that would like to walk on the red carpet. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

IMAGINE merry picnickers; laughing friends and family; green lawn rolling to the lake edge; the warm colours of autumn framing views to the blue mountain ranges. This is the image that Killarney’s Deb Bradfield and her team want to share with their first Killarney Picnic Basket Day. “The Picnic Basket concept was an idea of the late Mr Jamie Mackenzie, and we hope it will be a fun day for locals and visitors to experience the natural beauty of Killarney and the surrounding region, while enjoying wonderful local produce," Mrs Bradfield said. And what lovelier spot for the event than the beautiful gardens of Melrose Station, renowned across the region and previously featured in the Open Gardens scheme. Visitors are invited to bring their picnic blanket and chairs and set up a spot in the grounds. “You can bring your own picnic lunch or buy a delicious picnic lunch and afternoon tea, prepared and sold by our local volunteers,” Mrs Bradfield continued. A bar will be in operation and local jazz, country and folk musicians will provide entertainment. In keeping with the picnic basket theme, gourmet picnic baskets featuring local goodies will be raffled during the day. “We hope people from Killarney and across the Southern Downs Region, as well as further afield, will come to help launch our first Killarney Picnic Basket Day. Proceeds from the day will go to Livin’, a not-for-profit organisation raising

Wheels turning WARWICK is set to be part of a major Queensland Cycling event happening in July this year. Cycling Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Sean Muir, last week announced the locations for the Four Rounds of the 2016 Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) with Warwick securing Round 2 to be held from 2-3 July. The event will involve a Warwick Road Race, an Allora Teams Time Trial, as well as a Warwick Criterium. The Warwick based event will see a total of 26 teams visit the region, made up of 18 men’s teams and eight women’s teams competing in individual and team time trials, road races and criteriums. Since its inception in 2010, the QRTS has been a key development event for club and national riders looking to take the next step towards competing in the National Road Series and progressing to the grand tours of Europe. Mayor Tracy Dobie said that it was great to see professional cycling events considering the Southern Downs Region as a destination for major events. “I appreciate the good work that has been undertaken by Mike Crawley from QSM Sports to bring this event to Warwick. I also appreciate the efforts of the local police and Council staff in making this event happen in a pretty short time frame,”
Mayor Dobie said. “These types of events encourage people to visit the region and once they receive excellent customer service and enjoy the natural beauty of the region, we hope that they return with family and friends. “It is important that Council not just get these one-off events but, rather, these events become a regular fixture in the local events calendar to ensure repeat visitation,” she said. Mayor Dobie highlighted the importance of being proactive in relation to attracting events. “Those participating in this event will bring support crews, family and friends, which results in visitor expenditure into the local economy. The event will also be covered in the media and certainly within professional cycling networks. “It is important that new events be attracted to the region that increase and diversify the visitor expenditure, whether these events are sporting or cultural. “Equally, it is important for Council to continue to develop local events to ensure that they attract new and repeat visitation,” concluded Mayor Dobie. The final routes for the Warwick event are still being confirmed; however it is likely that one of the routes will have a focus on the roads around the Condamine River, with the event concluding in Leslie Park.

Polocrosse club is high in the saddle KILLARNEY Polocrosse Club has undergone a resurgence of riding members this year as it gets ready to mark its 60th anniversary. Established in 1956, the club is one of the oldest in Queensland and has special celebrations planned for its 60th anniversary carnival which is being held at its home grounds on the weekend of 14 and 15 May. Killarney Polocrosse has experienced a lot of membership growth since last year. It has 32 members made up of either Life, Social or Playing members. In a contrast to last year when the club had no riding members, 2016 has seen Killarney field at least two teams at each carnival and has had a club member represent Queensland at the Polocrosse Nationals. Killarney Polocrosse Club has a long and colourful representative history including many junior and senior players who have played for Queensland at the top levels of polocrosse at seven national titles over the past 25 years. At the recent Polocrosse Nationals held in Albury in April, new Killarney member Gail Donnelly did the club proud being selected to play for Queensland in the Mixed Masters team. This weekend, polocrosse players from across Queensland and northern New South Wales are planning to take to the field to battle for club pride while helping Killarney celebrate its 60th milestone. With a favourable weather forecast so far this week, it is expected that up to 400 visitors and their horses will arrive for the exciting event.
No strangers to the havoc weather can cause this equestrian sport, the club was hit hard during the last weekend of January 2013 when ex-tropical cyclone Oswald dumped a huge amount of water on Killarney, causing the Condamine River to rise and creating widespread flooding for the town. Killarney Polocrosse Club’s pristine fields were wrecked and club infrastructure, including the clubhouse, toilets and fences, were damaged by the water. The club rallied to restore the facilities to being better than ever. In a rural town of approximately 800 people, this big influx of sports people and spectators is good for the local economy with visitors encouraged to spend money in the region. That is just one of the reasons that Killarney Polocrosse Club, despite having no playing members in recent years, has continued with the tradition of their annual carnival. It is testimony to the group of dedicated social members who have worked hard to keep one of the oldest polocrosse clubs in Queensland alive. “Although we had no playing members in the past, the passion is still alive and the annual carnival is always on the calendar,” said Killarney Polocrosse Club Treasurer Kerri-Ann Lamb. Mrs Lamb said during the height of club membership there were five competing teams from A Grade to Juniors and more than 60 members. The club first purchased a land parcel of approximately seven acres in Killarney around 1960 for £700.

The 2016 team. In 1985 the club expanded its grounds by purchasing another 12 acres. Through its forward planning, Killarney was one of the first polocrosse clubs in Queensland to own its own ground. Killarney Polocrosse Club has used its grounds to hold events such as the Queensland Club State Championships in 1997, 1999, and during the club’s 50th anniversary year in 2006. The club also hosted an Australia versus New Zealand Test match around that time. “We are very proud of our grounds and facilities which are top class, and also used by Gold Coast Polocrosse Club, and Killarney Pony Club, and numerous other local events,” said Mrs Lamb. This unique sport originated in Australia in 1939 and is dubbed as the King of the One Horse Sports. Australia is the largest polocrosse country in the World. The Polocrosse Association of Australia boasts a membership of more than 4000 over 135 clubs. “The Killarney Polocrosse Club would sincerely like to thank all of its past and present
generous sponsors and kind local volunteers who have made the club so successful over the past 60 years,” Mrs Lamb said. “The club today is grateful and humbled by all past involvement and contributions. “Your actions have helped shape and mould the present into a future of which we can all be proud. “You can be assured we will be pursuing a strong polocrosse future,” said Mrs Lamb.

THE 2015-’16 El Nino is coming to an end, with recent changes in the tropical Pacific Ocean and atmosphere. The climate model outlooks suggests the likelihood of La Nina forming later in 2016 is around 50 per cent and this may give us some rain later in the year, but not now. La Nina is often, but not always, associated with aboveaverage winter-spring rainfall over northern, central and eastern Australia but I am not confident this is significant rainfall for the south-east corner of Queensland including the Southern Downs and Granite Belt. May to July rainfall is likely to be above average across most of mainland Australia Except the south-east of Queensland. Widespread rain is expected around 20 May to 24 May, 30 May to 3 June, and 4 June to 8 June, with one rainfall event from the north around 9 June to 13 June. May daytime and night-time temperatures are very likely to be warmer than the average for south-east Queensland, with minimal sub-zero temperatures expected this month. It is unusually warm for our region at

Safety course for quad bikes TAFE Queensland South West in Warwick is set to run an Operate Quadbikes course on Monday 23 May. There are plenty of things anyone who is thinking about purchasing a quad bike to use on their property should know about safety, use and maintenance according to the Tafe South West’s Ty Bauer. “Quad bikes and similar vehicles have become a significantly more popular and widely used machine in recent years due to their easy operation, low running cost and adaptability,” he said. The Operate Quad Bikes (AHCMOM212A) short course, held Monday 23 May, will provide attendees with the skills they need to maintain and safely operate quad bikes in a rural environment. It is delivered from 8am to 4pm and participants must be 16 or older and require a long sleeved shirt, long trousers and leather boots. THE South West Rail Aliance has gathered for their first meeting in Brisbane, on Friday. Following on from the Better Utilization of Existing Rail Infrastructure Forum held at Goondiwindi last December, and a visit by Mayors from Balonne and Goondiwindi to Minister Hinchcliffe, the formal working group, as recommended in the Deloitte report into the South West Railway, meet at Queensland Rail’s Headquarters. The major focus of the group is getting more freight back onto rail. Organisers said the South West Rail Line is one of the most important agricultural links to the Port of Brisbane. Last year’s result of 1.7 million tonnes of grain alone from the Border Regions proves the agricultural strength of the regions. With that in mind, the group has decided to invite Toowoomba Regional Council and Southern Downs Council to be a part of the overall alliance which will mean every Local Government on the SW Line will have direct input into future developments on the line and be able to promote utilization. A group spokesperson said there were a number of issues that confronted users on this line mainly headed by the lack of available locomotives and rolling stock to operate on branch lines in Queensland. A lack of a competitive market in the above rail sector is compounded by the constrained Toowoomba tunnels issue.

The group has requested that the State Government revisit the request for funding of lowering of the tunnels as a matter of priority as no containers are currently moved on rail to the Port of Brisbane and with containers becoming such a major part of the future, this needs addressing immediately Cr Graeme Scheu explained. “We are most appreciative of the State Government’s interest,” noted Balonne Shire Mayor, Richard Marsh. Graincorp, with their contracted operator, Aurizon, have stepped up the bulk grain movements enormously from our area since the Goondiwindi Forum last year. “Only 100 bulk trains left for port in the previous 12 months and to date this year well over 300 bulk trains have completed the journey taking at least 8,000 trucks off these already overloaded highways. But there needs to be even more done get the appropriate freight task on the right mode of transport,” stressed Mayor Graeme Scheu. Australasian Rail Association CEO Danny Broad, who was an invited guest for the gathering, congratulated the group on the approach to better rail use. “We need to have an accurate cost of road vs rail if governments are to look seriously at the use of rail as a freight alternative,” he said. “Rail will never replace road but there is enormous potential in these short haul rail options as feeder services into projects like the Inland Rail.”

ManUp and become aware State view Lawrence Springborg Southern Downs MP
Lawrence Springborg at the Inglewood event. in the last year with 18,138 new cases. Bowel cancer had 17,520 new cases, breast cancer had 16,084 new cases and all but 150 of these breast cancer cases were women. Prostate cancer accounted for some 25 per cent of all new cancer diagnosis in Australian males in 2015, resulting tragically in the deaths of 3400 men. On current statistics, one in six Australian males will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before their 85th birthday. It is critically important that there is an increased level of awareness within our community of prostate cancer.
As is the case with many cancers, we can often be lulled into believing that it is only symptomatic of an older age grouping. Indeed that is often the tragedy of breast cancer and prostate cancer. My encouragement to all males in our community is to be aware of the risk of prostate cancer and not believe that because you are under the age of 40, there is no chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The tragedy, of course, is that for young males who do not respond to symptoms and who are not taking the necessary precautionary checks, often by the time of the diagnosis has been made, it is too late. This results in a dramatic impact on the af-
fected person in the prime of their life and also on the family network which they support as well. I would just like to encourage people to support the ManUp organisation which is almost totally reliant on charity and the benevolence of those who support this fantastic cause. This includes the many passionate volunteers who are living with prostate cancer or who have recovered from it and those who support them, particularly their families. By supporting ManUp you can support a network of prostate cancer nurses throughout the community and will also be raising awareness around this critically important issue.

AS A Member of Parliament, I am often privileged to help celebrate the achievement of some amazing people in our communities as they go about raising awareness of important issues. One such event which I recently attended was a prostate cancer awareness day in Inglewood. There was a major effort being made by the wonderful organisation ManUp to raise awareness in the community of prostate cancer. ManUp was established to ensure that people are made aware of the risks of prostate cancer, its detection, its treatment and also how to live with the diagnosis and outcome of the disease. During the course of that afternoon it was brought to my attention that one of my school mates, from my school days at Inglewood, and also another young man within the community, who was under the age of 40 years old, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The diagnosis was as a consequence of an awareness day conducted by the fantastic ManUp organisation. At the same time it was brought to my attention that in the broader community there had also been a number of successful diagnosis and treatments of the disease among young men as a consequence of the local awareness campaign. To me, it really did raise the point about the importance of awareness campaigns whether it be for prostate, bowel and breast cancers, melanoma or any of the other cancers that afflict our community. It is a little known fact that prostate cancer had the largest number of new diagnosis in Australia

What’s On Taking art to the streets
A piece in Wollongong. and military officials kept him under close watch while at the reactor. Back home, Guido attracted attention with his 30-metre high depiction of four farmers in regional Victoria. Visitors drove for hours to see a giant mural on disused wheat silos overlooking the tiny, drought-stricken Wimmera community of Brim. Stanthorpe Art Gallery director Nicola Holly is excited about the street art project. “Guido is one of the best contemporary artists in the
country and we are extremely proud to welcome him to Stanthorpe,” she said. “We had an overwhelming positive response to our first mural in February by ‘Drapl’ and want to continue placing public works of art in the region.” “Murals are the best way to bring colour and life into a town - they uplift people and create a sense of civic pride in the region. We’re hoping to bring more talented artists to Stanthorpe as the year continues.” Two years ago, curator Grace Dewar kicked off the First Coat street art festival - an event that’s seen over 50 walls in Toowoomba given mural makeovers from street artists - from a purple Steve Irwin on the side of an empty lot, to a two-storey high elephant in a laneway off the main street. Granite Belt Dance Club president Jenel Hunt said being able to offer the services of a professional dance teacher was a dream come true. “Dancing is a wonderful social skill to have. It’s fun, it’s good for you and it keeps you young. “I hope that anyone who would like to learn the basics of ballroom dancing would grab this opportunity with both hands because this is something we’ve wanted to offer for a long time and never previously had the chance,” she said. “Between them, John and Loreen have been teaching for 20 years.
Loreen and John dance up a storm. “John has won Queensland Titles for his dancing and Loreen has taken out honours in ballroom dancing medals in silver star in a number of different styles.” She said people could be total beginners, have learned the gypsy tap in school back in the year dot or have some dancing experience. The classes are also open to singles - something the dance club has never done before. “We’ve always said you have to come as a couple for
our social dancing sessions but John and Loreen assure us that whoever comes can learn to dance. “So don’t worry if you don’t have a partner for the dancing, just come.” The dance club’s regular Thursday nights are in abeyance while the Learn to Dance project is kicked off. The classes cost $15 per couple or $8 per person and for the practice Sundays it will be $5 per person. The president can be contacted on 0428 852 450.

RENOWNED street artist Guido van Helten is on his way to Stanthorpe later this month as part of the First Coast Festival. The event, Toowoomba’s hugely popular street art festival, is expanding and Stanthorpe is proud to be one of its first ‘satellite’ murals. The Brisbane-born artist recently made world headlines when he painted a striking portrait in an incinerator in Chernobyl as part of the 30th commemorations. The piece - which was created in six hours - was the first street art mural permitted inside the disaster zone. “It’s just an eerie feeling to know there is this constant threat of radiation around,” Guido said. “I had an underlying sense of feeling uncomfortable. Usually I always wear a mask but I don’t need full-length clothes. Some of the other people who were there were just wearing Tshirts.” The artist said the work was created with assistance from Chernobyl district authorities

★★ ★★★ STARSCOPE ARIES—March 21-April 20 Avoid shortcuts in areas related to health and diet. Documents require meticulous review. If you are purchasing anything, be sure to check the guarantee. The weekend spotlights your writing talents. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 A close friend responds positively to your words of praise on his/her capabilities. A difficult family situation requires a democratic discussion and perhaps a vote. A friend proves his/her loyalty. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Business plans may be subject to revision and travel detours are possible through the weekend. Romance is on the upswing, thanks to a more positive philosophy on your part. CANCER—June 22-July 22 This week focuses on new destinations and new ideas, while an old fashioned approach to romance can get off to a sweet begining. Follow ups in general bring bright results. LEO—July 23-August 22 You may be called upon at the eleventh hour to save a troubled project. Travel planning is highlighted. Be unusually selective when choosing both your companion and destination.
City band’s boost at fete THE community was out in force on Saturday morning for the annual St Marks Fete. It was a chance to listen to the Warwick City Band, enjoy an auction and check out all the amazing community displays. Pictures: TERRY WEST
VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Avoid taking anyone into your confidence too soon. A possible conflict of interest may exist at the workplace. A romantic intuition could pay handsomely after the weekend. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Blesings in disguise form the theme this week, and hidden pleasures are sprinkled through the whole week. Some detective work may bring significant results which may help you find something you have been looking for.
Enjoying the Saturday morning out at St Marks Fete was Beth Washbourne and Julie Brownlie with Mason and Harlan.
Heather and Julianne Cox at the St Marks Fete on Saturday.
SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Unexpected visitors may play havoc with your schedule, but you may be granted a reprieve at work. Romance and travel blend well. Review all situations requiring shared expenses. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Avoid extremes, notably in areas of recreation and diet. Keywords through the week are moderation and compromise. Cleaning or tidying up may inspire a major inventory project.
Tom Potts ran the auction for St Marks Fete on Saturday.
Happy with the day were organisers Dianne and Rod Winterton with Dudley and Glenis Fitzgerald.
Helping out on the day are Jan Corcut, Joan Lawless and Elaine Wiedman.
Selling raffle tickets and enjoying the day were Doug and Anne Wilson and Ed Diery.
CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Minor family difficulties should be resolved before they assume larger proportions. A sense of humour helps you cope with a brief series of crises. Your romantic situation stabilizes. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Your partner’s expectations may be unrealistically high, but don’t bring him/her down to earth too suddenly. This week is favourable for outlining a complicated project. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Expect last minute cancellations, rescheduled events and surprise guests during a socially hectic week. At work, systems operate more smoothly and a long lasting rivalry evaporates. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Enthusiasm and generosity are your positive qualities. Your negative traits include a sarcastic streak and a restless nature. Finances require careful thought, especially through the next seven months, if you are to attain a major goal. A new romantic cycle may begin soon.
Demonstrating their spinning skills are Mary Cooper and Dawn Booth.

Mental health wheels turn By JOYCE MARSH, WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT A GLEN Innes Rotary Club project saw 50 cyclists and 15 support crew head off on the four-day ‘Tenterfield to Murwillumbah Bike Ride’ to raise funds for Australian Rotary Health for Mental Health Research in rural areas. Cyclists came from as far away as St George, Bowen, Bundaberg, Coffs Harbour, Alstonville, Glen Innes and Taree, all of whom were very generous souls and happy to support the community group along the way and to experience country hospitality and the bush. The event started at Tenterfield showground where the local Rotary club catered for dinner and breakfast before heading for a stopover at Liston Lavender Farm, then morning tea with Liston Progress Association, lunch at Koreelah and on to Woodenbong showground where afternoon tea was presented by the Woodenbong Community Coffee Group and the local Riding Club. The evening meal was catered for by the Rotary support crew that
travelled with them. A representative of the organisation, Rose Price said it was an important event “So far, this year’s ride has been incredibly rewarding with 50 entrants from a humble beginning event of 13 riders,” she said. “The cyclists loved the picturesque scenery and challenging hills taking into account that from Liston to Woodenbong the accumulation of rise and fall of the hills tallied 952 metres ascending and 1454 metres descending.” After leaving Woodenbong the schedule was a downhill run to Kyogle with stops to include Grevillia Hall Committee for morning tea and Kyogle Rotary Club to cater for lunch. The next day, via Wadeville where the Rural Fire Service were to cater morning tea, saw the riders arrive in Uki where the School P&C provided lunch. The final leg saw the riders arrive in Murwillumbah on Friday 6 May at the Civic Centre where they celebrate the conclusion and the start of the Rotary District Conference.
Susie and Steve Dunn and John Barber rode in the Tenterfield to Murwillumbah Rotary fund-raising event.

Boring grinding Kiwi test The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
FOR rugby league followers it was a strange weekend. The Kangaroo Kiwi Test was a grinding uninspiring affair that sparked a bit of controversy post game as big Mal and Gus Gould got into a bit of tit for tat in the press. It was possibly the most exciting part of the whole affair. The City Country game might excite some, but I am not sure who - perhaps those in Tamworth and the City coach who probably had to do more player introductions than coaching. The highlight of the round certainly came from the Pacific Nation Tests. The games were played with real passion and plenty of the razzle dazzle we all love but rarely see. How great to see the Kumla’s crack it for a win. Now that has to be good for the game in PNG. Good for PNG but a recent article in a Sydney newspaper highlighted the growing number of country areas which are falling out of the once strong Country competition in NSW. Once proud league centres now have no rugby league at all a fact that is all too familiar with league stalwarts in our own backyard as the BRL struggled this season to field teams in Stanthorpe and Texas and numbers continue to be an issue in Killarney. This is not a criticism - just a fact of life; but one which the NSW Rugby League QRL and NRL must certainly address sooner rather than later. While the boys at the big end of town reap the rewards of big TV deals and the salary cap and how to wrought it, remain newsworthy - the plight of local leagues is not spoken about often enough in the halls of power. Already in country NSW on the coast and inland eight once-strong clubs have folded and another three or four are in doubt, and I do not have the current figures in Queensland but it certainly is a growing trend. Someone needs to address the issue and soon. How many of our legendary footballers have come from the country - plenty - country football is a resource that the NRL and other bodies will ignore at their own peril. - Casey GET THE PINS OUT AFTER last weekend’s NRL Rep Round, tipsters have to get the magic pins out as Round 10 of the NRL kicks off on Thursday night with a game at Jubilee Oval between the Dragons and Raiders. In what looks like a tough game, I think the home ground advantage will give the Dragons the edge. On Friday night, the Eels and Rabbitohs go head to head at ANZ. The Bunnies are desperate to turn their form around and have moved Greg Inglis to five eighth for this game. No-one has more to play for than the Eels however, and if their coach has managed to keep their minds on the on-field rather than the off-field they can get those much-needed points here. The Panthers will have plenty of home ground support on Saturday when they host the Warriors and should score themselves a much-needed win. In a rare double header, the Cowboys head to Suncorp for their clash with Melbourne and although this will be a testing game, I do not think Melbourne are travelling well enough to upset the premiers. In the second leg of the double header, Brisbane and the Sea Eagles go head to head. No easy match for the Broncos with injuries and suspensions affecting their engine room, but at Suncorp it is not in my DNA to tip against the Broncos. The Knights host the Sharks on Sunday and it is hard to imagine an upset here - the Sharks to put another bite on the premiership table here. The Tigers and Dogs have a Sunday afternoon game at ANZ and with the Dogs not travelling as well as expected at the start of the season, I think the Tigers will cause an upset. Round 10 wraps up with the Titans and Roost-
The growing crew from the Stanthorpe Croquet Club celebrated World Croquet Day in style last Saturday. ers playing on Monday night. The Titans may be boosted by the inclusion of an unwanted Eel by kick off. There is still some turmoil at the Roosters around the rep availability of Pearce. Not sure that all is well in the Chook House just yet, and at home the Titans could cause an upset. Happy tipping HOWARD HOME FOR WIN GRANT Howard outlasted an enthusiastic field last Saturday to secure a win in the May monthly medal and putting competition in Stanthorpe. Howard returned a score of three over par for 75 and nett 69 to win the day. Howard also received the Betty Yap Memorial which was sponsored by Greg Yap. Simon Shannon also played well his nett 71 on countback good enough to give him the runner’sup prize. Dylan Barraclough had the lowest round of the day with 74 off the stick. With a round of nett 74, Fiona claimed the ladies event. Margie Locke finished runner-up with nett 78. Dale Minchenton had the lowest gross round of 96 for the ladies. Matt Waterworth and Richard Reardon shared the honours for putting, needing 25 putts for the round. In the Ladies event, it was Lyn Ludlow who took the putting honours with 30 for the round. Saturday was also the first of four rounds for the Club championships and after final scores the ’A’ grade standings have Dylan Barraclough holding a one shot lead over Grant Howard. In ’B’ grade Simon Shannon leads Greg Fraser by a shot and Greg Yap is currently holding a twoshot lead over Viv Thouard in ’C’ grade. There are three rounds yet to play leaving the chasers plenty of opportunities. On Saturday the club is holding a single stroke event which will be sponsored by the visiting golfers from Wantima Golf Club. This is the second round of the men’s and ladies’ championships but members will also be playing in a club challenge against the Wantima club. This week is self-nominated times with the championship draw to operate for the last two rounds. There is a time sheet is on the board and members are once again reminded of the earlier winter tee off time - 11am. On Sunday, the visitors from Wantima are also sponsoring a medley 4BBB stableford. Tee off is at 9.15am following Sporters - there is a time sheet on the board for this event and organisers are hoping for a good turn out to support the visiting sponsors. AGM SUNDAY THE Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association holds it their annual general
not sent out by post now. Fishing in the rivers remains free. VISITOR SHOWS HOW THERE was slight change in the scheduled competition at the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range last weekend. The Single action competition was postponed until this weekend (Sunday 15 May) and in its place a 25-metre Standard Pistol Competition was held in its place. Inglewood always welcoming visiting competitors but rarely do they come from as far afield as Estonia. Last weekend’s Pistol event was won by Ragnar Litt who showed the locals how things are done in Estonia. Finishing in second place was Ross Jackson and Robert Smith rounded out the placings. In the Rimfire Rifle competition, it was locals to the fore with Ray Dudgeon outscoring Stephanie Dudgeon and Quentin Chapman. This Sunday in addition to the Single Action event there will also be Muzzle loading and Centrefire rifle on the menu.
President Roger Martin of the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association pictured with Queensland Fisheries officer Paul Kuhn following the 2015 AGM. meeting on Sunday at the clubhouse located on Saddledam Road, Leslie Dam. The meeting commences at 9am sharp and nominations have been received for all positions. Members are urged to support the meeting. Make a special effort to attend and some input in to the running of the club. The club recently completed another successful stocking season recently. The total number of fish stocked since the club began in 1987 has passed four million. In Leslie Dam alone, the club has stocked almost three million golden perch, 597,150 silver perch and 182,479 Murray cod fingerlings. Connolly Dam has received over 21,000 Murray cod, close to 200,000 golden perch and 41,305 silver perch. The Condamine River has had 2000 Murray cod released, 20,000 golden perch and 1500 silver perch. Over 260,000 fingerlings. The rivers and streams in the shire have also received nearly 400,000 fingerlings. The Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association works tirelessly to ensure the sustainability of fish numbers in our impoundments, rivers and streams. Remember to buy your fishing permit for Leslie and Connolly dams as reminders are
CLUB CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY STANTHORPE Croquet players marked International Croquet Day with several fun social games last Saturday morning. It followed a larger-than-normal turn out for Golf Croquet earlier in the week. Dividing into one group played triples and the other doubles. Justin Lady, Elaine Brown and Shirley Evans proved too strong for Judy Lock, Teresa Pyne and Shirley Page, winning 7-4 in an entertaining game. Dianne Wren and Marion Castle won a tight game (13-12) against Val Fan court and Liz Elway. It came down to a great final shot from newcomer Marion to break the deadlocked scores. In total, she scored an impressive six hoops but the top scorer in the game was Dianne Wren with a total of seven hoops. In the second game, both doubles, Val Fancourt and Judy Locke scored another narrow win over Liz Ellway and Teresa Pyne. The final score 10-9. Six hoops from Val Fancourt was the best contribution to this score. Shirley Page and Dianne Wren outplayed Elaine Brown and another newcomer Justin Liddy. The final score 9-7. In this game, Elaine Brown scored the only hoop in one for the day. Under threatening skies, only a small number of players took to the court for association croquet. The games, however, were very competitive. Despite a flying start from Grace Howard who breaks of seven and five Pat Schnoor and Jenny Tunbridge finished strongly to win 25-23. Pat scored breaks of five, four and three. In the remaining game, Heather Widderick pegged out 26-20 against Val Richardson.

Local Sport GREAT NUMBERS FOR GATEBALL IN A week where players celebrated the International croquet day a large group turned out for gateball croquet and both courts were in action. Triples were played for the first two games. On court one, John, Les Williams (back from a trip to the UK) and Bill Golding teamed up against the ladies and scored a one-point win. Final score 9-8. On the second court, it was all ladies and in the first game, Andrea Denkewitz, Grace Howard and Teresa Pyne lost their first game against Joy Newman, Carol Verwey and Jenny Tunbridge 13 points to 9, but fought back to win the second game 11 points to 10. Joy Newman was the standout player of these games. Teams changed after the break and two more games of triples were played. ZIKAN TAKES HONOURS PHIL Zikan scored a win at Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday with Norm Steele runner-up. Run-downs went to Chook and Danny McAuliffe while Angelo Maugeri had the Best Gross. The Pin Shot at the third went to Jim McPherson and Dave Williams claimed the Pro Pin. John Walsh and Terry Byrnes did not go home empty handed, with each winning a meat tray. Tee off this Sunday is at the normal time of 8am - 8.30am and a reminder that visitors are always welcome. TIME TO CELEBRATE AS WARWICK prepare to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their A grade premiership win in 1986, there will be plenty of pride on the line in Saturday’s games as rugby league returns to Fr Ranger Oval after a weekend of byes for all but the Cowboys’ Under 18 side. The Under 18 side kept their winning record in tact with a win over a vastly improved Border Bushrangers side in Tenterfield last Saturday. Despite the 34-18 final score line, the Border Bushrangers showed promise in the first half. They scored first points and led 12-6 before a flurry of tires before half time gave the Cowboys a 22-12 lead at the break. The Cowboys showed their class in the second half despite a spirited performance from the lessexperienced Bush Rangers. Last weekend’s bye handed Pittsworth the opportunity to draw a point clear in the TRL club challenge which Warwick took out last season. To regain their spot at the top of the table, the club must win two of the games against Pittsworth. Wattles also return to their home ground, Platz Oval this weekend after a 38-28 loss to Brothers last weekend. Wattles having lost several players from their
back-to-back premiership wins only a couple of seasons ago was at his blistering best for the Tigers. Tandy weaved his magic to run in three tries against his former club while the skills of Jarrod McIntosh proved too much to handle for the less-experienced Killarney players. Despite the scoreline, it was brave effort from the Cutters who fielded only 12 players after injuries depleted their playing ranks. This weekend the Cutters have the luxury of a bye to help with their injury woes while the Tigers will be keen to extend their unbeaten winning run with a win over Wallangarra in the popular local derby. There will be three games at Rugby League Park on Saturday with a Ladies League Tag game, BRL A grade game and the Border Bushrangers Under 18s will line-up against Dalby.
TIGERS DOMINATE THE Tenterfield Tigers continued their domination of the BRL competition with a convincing win 40-2 over the Killarney Cutters last weekend. Coedie Tandy who helped the Cutters to
PICNICS AT WARWICK THE annual Picnic race meeting is on this weekend at Allman park, and the five-race programme has attracted strong nominations, so it is time to select your racing outfit and hat, plan your picnic fill your esky and get to the track early to secure your best vantage spot. Hashtag Yolo comes into the race on the back of a recent win. The four-year-old backed up a good run in Warwick on 18 April with over 1400m in Chinchilla. Race two is the Bill and Margaret Hoiberg memorial - a benchmark 55 run over 1350m. Local trainer Gary Schwencke will saddle up Marlan. Deagon trainer Quinton Kearney returns with Rough Kiss a winner at his last start in Warwick in mid-April. The Beaudesert-trained Sir Blaze is another interesting runner in what looks an open event. The Warwick Automotive Benchmark 50 has attracted 17 nominations. The meeting will wrap up with two maiden events - A QTIS maiden over the 1350m journey and 18 runners have nominated for the final event an 1100m Maiden. Both races have been well supported by local and visiting trainers. It is sure to be another successful meeting with a Calcutta being held on Friday night to get racegoers off to a great start.

MAIDEN WIN FOR STANTHORPE TEXAS A NARROW win over the Wallangarra Rams side handed the recently combined Stanthorpe Texas rugby league side a milestone victory. It was the first win for the side since the arch rivals combined at the beginning of the season to ensure league was played in both centres. The game was played at the Reg Saunders Oval in Texas in hot conditions. Stanthorpe president David Ball said it had been a challenging start to the season, however, it was pleasing to see 24 players turn up for Saturday’s game. “We are getting more players to training in Stanthorpe, and it is great to have
some of the more experienced players back on the paddock. Kyle Marsh made an immediate impact in his first game back from injury”. The Rams played well as both teams traded tries in the first half, and at the half time break, scores were locked at 18-all. The second half saw the home side skip away to a healthy 30-18 lead, however, Wallangarra were not going away and struck back late in the second half and in a heart-stopping finish fell just short as the Stanthorpe Texas side celebrated their inaugural win. The question is which team song got the rally? It was also a big night for the Ladies League tag side who lasso notched up their first win of the season, defeating the Ramettes 10-4. This weekend the Stanthorpe Texas side will host Inglewood at the Gremlins home ground Sullivan Oval.
