■Money’s in the bank, but Evans Road can’t get a start ...
Good Evans! Fix it! By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
IT’S the road that’s caused Casey commuters havoc for 11 years and despite the State Budget’s $40 million duplication investment, they’re still waiting to be heard. With funding successfully allocated to re-open Evans Road, it’s the alleged twoyear wait for construction to start that has locals up in arms. Hundreds marched down the deserted road on Sunday 15 May with banners displaying one message for VicRoads- “Open Evans Road now. The rally, organised by the Casey Roads and Infrastructure Group (CRaIG) is calling for a swift “low-cost solution to the closure - a left turn only option out of Evans Road onto South Gippsland Hwy. The unsealed road near the level crossing was closed by the Casey council in 2005, due to safety concerns at the South Gippsland Highway intersection. Now sealed, Casey Council has been pushing for funding to upgrade the intersection and therefore open Evans Road since 2011. Their wishes were answered in the State Budget’s multi-million dollar investment to duplicate 1.2 kilometres of Hallam Road between Ormond Road and the South Gippsland Highway. But despite the community’s best efforts at a solution, the road will not be opened until the South Gippsland Highway, Hallam Road and Evans Road intersection, deemed unsafe, is addressed. VicRoads Metro South East Regional Director Aidan McGann said: “VicRoads’ Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Casey stipulates that Evans Road will not be re-opened until the South Gippsland Highway intersection is upgraded. CRaIG committee member, Robert Ward said the closure adds up to 20 minutes to locals’ commutes that would take “just two minutes if Evans Road was opened. “We had more than 150 people attend the march, Mr Ward said. “People are saying it’s great to hear that there’s a commitment to re-opening Evans
Road, but why not just put a left-turn in, instead of making us wait another two or three years Mr McGann said VicRoads recognised that the closure created a disconnect between the communities of Lyndhurst and Lynbrook, saying the project is a “priority to be delivered. In November 2015 Acting VicRoads Metro South East Director of Transport and Planning at the time, Ms Savoula Lidis advised that the next step for Evans Road was under investigation. Ms Lidis said “There were a number of options suggested, and we both (council and VicRoads) agreed to investigate these over the coming weeks. However more than six months on and with funds delivered, the community continues to campaign for a short-term solution. Mr McGann said “As part of these works, pre-planning will involve working together with key stakeholders including the City of Casey to re-open Evans Road. “We will keep the community appropriately informed regarding this project. Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure, Ryan Smith who attended the rally said he supported the left turn solution. “I am supportive of the short-term solution as one that I believe has been thought through by council officers, Mr Smith said. “It will give relief to those residents who now have to drive significantly out of their way in order to get from one end of the road to the other. “The community is currently divided by this road closure and should not have to wait for over two more years for this to change. Labor Member for Cranbourne, Jude Perera who did not attend the march on Sunday told Star News: “Let’s be frank here, Evans Road is wholly owned and managed by Casey Council. “The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with supporting the opportunity with the re-opening of the council owned and managed Evans Road, after it was initially closed by Casey Council, Mr Perera said.

Driver died on the spot
Eagle roof has wings By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
By ANEEKA SIMONIS
A HALLAM company has won a $2 million contract to supply and install the eye-catching roof on Bunjil Place arts and civic centre. Barden-Steeldeck Industries was selected by competitive tender to deliver the complex 10,000 squaremetre roof which is regarded as the defining element of the $126 million building. Manager Michael Shacklock was not over-awed by the complex geometry - which includes three levels and two arcing ‘eagle’ wings that meet in a ‘tongue’ on the building’s western corner. “We try to specialise in the out-ofthe-ordinary,” he said. Mr Shacklock said installers would abseil to work on Bunjil’s winged elements. It’s a low-risk, tested method of working on the bespoke-design roof’s highly-variant gradients and its curved-over front, he said. Aluminium will be used for the roof’s most curved and tapered sections and the rest will be the more standard Colourbond steel. Barden-Steeldeck has been involved in many of Melbourne’s modern landmarks including the undulating Southern Cross railway station roof - a project feted with architectural awards - and Casey RACE. The business has gone from strength to strength since four employees including Mr Shacklock bought it in 2006. It has a workforce of 52. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz was impressed that Barden-Steeldeck was not only local but “the best in the business”. “The appointment reinforces the
A WOMAN died in a fatal two-car collision in Cranbourne South Monday morning 16 May. A man believed to be aged in his fifties was taken to hospital for observation. Police investigating the circumstances leading to the crash believe two cars travelling along North Road collided head on near the intersection of Pearcedale Road about 9.10am. The female driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene. The male driver was transferred to hospital. Major Collision Investigation Unit members attended the scene. This year, 112 lives have been lost on the road compared with 99 this time last year. The insulated roof will harvest rainwater into two massive underground tanks. It is acoustically designed to stop noise from Princes Highway intruding into the library, gallery, theatre and studio. Hampton Park (11), Narre Warren (10) and Pakenham (9). PSOs also got hit with a fair whack of abuse. The data recorded 47 assaults against PSOs within the outer south east region - 36 reports in Dandenong, 10 reports in Casey and a single report in Cardinia. Assault categorised under Section 31 of the Crimes Act 1958 takes in actions that intentionally or recklessly injure or insult a person or deprive them of their liberty. Statistics show the rate of assault against emergency workers including police and ambulance staff in the region jumped 53 per cent in the past five years.

WHEN it comes to contempt for law enforcement officers, Casey isn’t far behind Dandenong’s excessive assault figures. Victoria Police crime statistics show a disturbing rate of assaults on paramedics, police and protective services officers (PSOs) across Casey, Dandenong and Cardinia. Last year, there were 240 reported cases of police assault in the region. Exactly half of the assaults occurred in the Greater Dandenong area, which recorded 121 police-targeted attacks. Casey recorded 97 police as-
saults while Cardinia recorded almost a fifth of that total with 22 assault reports. Paramedics were also a target for assault last year. Five emergency workers in Dandenong reported being assaulted on the job and a further three assault reports were lodged in the Casey region. Alarmingly, paramedic abuse and assault rates jumped by almost a quarter in the past five years to the extent that some homes are now ‘blacklisted’ - not to be entered before police arrived on scene. The majority of those homes are located in the south-east, including Dandenong (34), Cranbourne (22), Noble Park (15),

ABOUT 250 creditors including tradies, suppliers, customers and employees are owed millions of dollars as a result of the shock liquidation of Hallam-based boutique builders Botanic Homes. The award-winning company – which advertises luxury display homes in Officer, Narre Warren North, Clyde North, Lysterfield and other parts of Melbourne – was put in administration on 3 May. Jason Stone of the administrators PKF Melbourne said it is too early to say how much of the estimated $4-5 million of debt will be recouped by creditors. Mr Stone said the Hallam South Road business had been taken by “surprise” by its financial demise. There had been “really good” forward projections but the company “couldn’t get over the short-term hurdle”, he said. “The cash flow shortage seemed to creep up on them and they were just not able to find a way out of it.” Botanic Homes’ assets included properties ranging from land lots to complete display homes. Many of those properties had bank loans on them and Mr Stone said that they should show a cash “surplus” when they were sold. PKF Melbourne was also dealing with a number of interested parties to acquire the business assets.

Mr Stone said there didn’t seem to be any impropriety involved in Botanic Homes’ fall but that would be part of his ongoing investigation. Directors Craig Garvey and Robert Bender could be personally pursued for some debts, having made personal guarantees for some supplier debts and other items, Mr Stone said. Star News has heard unverified stories of creditors owed up to $250,000, and a couple’s underconstruction home being “trashed” by tradies not paid by Botanic Homes. Housing Industry Association state director Gil King said consumers covered by domestic building insurance were protected. “The domestic building insurance, often referred to as ‘junk insurance’ is in place specifically for circumstances like this. “As with most if not all insurance products you hope that you never need to use it but it is comforting to know it is there when needed.” Botanic Homes’ website has been stripped of content, its Facebook page taken down and its office phone on message bank. According to testimony from former Small Business Minister Bruce Billson – now taken down from the website – the company had employed 30 people. It provided “strong business to dozens of service providers and trades people”. Star News attempted to contact Botanic Homes for comment.
RIVER Gum Primary School is set to have a big brass band on its hands after the State Government rolled out its musical instrument grants program. The Hampton Park school is one of 43 Victorian schools to receive the $5000 cash injection under round one of the grants program. Principal of seven years Roma McKinnon said “it was music to my ears”. The school has already surveyed its students and will be selecting instruments based
on student preference. “We will provide classes in instruments that the children want to learn,” Ms McKinnon said. “We are in the process of providing more brass groups as well.” The grants are part of the State Government’s $2 million Music in Schools program which will also provide professional training for Victorian teachers. The second round of grants will be available in 2017.

Shots fired By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BELAL Haniffa is a doctor, a hunter of feral animals - and vehemently denies he’s the person Casey Mayor Sam Aziz seems to imply he is. Mr Haniffa’s Facebook profile picture was highlighted by Cr Aziz during an online spat with Facebook group Casey Against Racism. The picture depicts Mr Haniffa wearing a camouflage cloth masking his face in the Outback, and his name written in Arabic and English. Cr Aziz, who referred to Mr Haniffa as a follower of Casey Against Racism, stated on Facebook that the image and a post by the group which is critical of him “speak for themselves”. “I am sure friends on my page will draw their own conclusions about the type of support behind this group of ‘rent a crowd’ idiots. “Again I am reminded of the old adage ‘what you are speaks so loudly, we cannot hear what you say’.” Mr Haniffa, a Greater Dandenong resident and surgical resident at Peninsula Health, told Star News he was on a hogdeer hunting trip when the profile picture was taken. “It was a bit surprising that he picked on me specifically. It didn’t seem reasonable from a person in public office to pick out a random person and single them out as a shady character. “My friends have joked with me before that one day a newspaper will ring me up because someone is calling me a terrorist over that photo. Then something like this actually happens.” He said violent, extreme groups that claim to be Islamic are abhorrent to him - “the same as anyone else”. But his parents are worried that the imputation by Cr Aziz could inspire dangerous reaction against their son. Mr Haniffa said “it’s a bit concerning”, pointing out Cr Aziz’s large following though most of their comments haven’t specifically targeted him. “It’s encouraging a narrowmindedness amongst those who view it. He says they don’t need to look any further, just what they see.” Mr Haniffa was introduced to shooting during cadets training at Melbourne High School and re-applied for a gun licence to hunt feral goats while studying in rural NSW.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Wild weather has not stopped the safe construction of Bunjil Place over the last few weeks.
Dr Belal Haniffa has hit back at Casey Mayor Sam Aziz's online attacks.
Concrete pouring has continued with slabs for the gallery, underground car park, ground floor of the library and the fly-tower (part of the theatre complex) now complete. Next up we’ll be pouring the studio slab, first level of the theatre seating and first suspended slab, including the function centre, kitchen and part of the City of Casey Customer Service Centre. Work is also being undertaken to prepare for the below ground substation and tank room slabs and the first of the pre-cast panels for the fly tower are being installed. Sam Aziz has traded online barbs with Casey Against Racism.
Sam Aziz takes aim at Casey Against Racism on Facebook.
“It’s a good way of sourcing meat. You’re using a resource that’s out in the wild.” He recently hunted hog-dear on the Gippsland coast - the feral Indian species being a particular problem at Wilson’s Promontory, he said. On that trip, he and other hunters underwent licence checks from police - who also checked he was storing his weapon properly. The sniping between Cr Aziz and Casey Against Racism concerns a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North - an application rejected by the council. Casey Council cited the proposal’s impact on the greenwedge foothills and local roads, including an objection by VicRoads, as reasons for its decision. Mr Haniffa said there seemed to be a mixture of planning grounds and anti-Islamic sentiment among mosque opponents - some of whom live outside the area. The project would help relieve over-crowding at an existing mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road, he said. “I would think if people were concerned with traffic and congestion at the current
mosque they would be supportive of another mosque to take the pressure off.” In response to Mr Haniffa and his supporters' denials, Cr Aziz told Star News: “I don’t have to believe them.” The mayor pointed to his own mass of support, a long-list of Facebook visitors that commented favourably and shared his post. “I’ve made my point and I move on - I’ve got hundreds of millions of things to do. “They are the ones that started it by calling us racists, and then I followed them. “If they dish it out, they can expect it back.” In its latest post on 10 May, Casey Against Racism challenged Cr Aziz to “disown himself of any support for these anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic groups and their ideology of terror against Muslims”. Casey Against Racism is a group formed in support of a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North. In April, Casey Council rejected the mosque on a host of planning grounds, including impact on the locale’s greenwedge foothills and VicRoads’ objections over traffic concerns.

Get your own house in order
Lenscape Lenscape
IT IS astounding that City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and the rest of the councillors are hammering VicRoads for graffiti on the Monash Freeway when they don’t have their own house in order. Cr Aziz says “we have a policy of responding to reported graffiti within 24 hours” but Frawley Road bridge in Hallam, John Pandazopoulos Hall, several bus stops around Casey and several council owned signs have had graffiti on them for months. Does Cr Wayne Smith need another refresher course in graffiti removal after his last trip to the US on the subject cost ratepayers an estimated $6500? The recent Victorian state budget delivered $300,000 for graffiti removal and prevention on the Monash. Perhaps local councillors should focus on cleaning up council owned property instead of wasting ratepayer’s money on signs attacking VicRoads. Declan Foley, Berwick.

Facts of the matter I MUST ask what sort of support Mayor Sam Aziz is getting now? I cannot believe a Casey City mayor would write about “presenting accurate facts” and then get things so wrong. I understand it must have been a very busy term and some of the councillors don’t appear to have consulted much with the community over the past three years but I would expect they would all be properly briefed. I must add that I admire the good work of the vast majority of council employees, they are dedicated and passionate about this municipality. I attended the December 2015 consultation on the rate cap issue (I knew nothing of a consultation in October) and my record is that of the 45 people present in December only two supported the council proposal to apply for an increase above the rate cap. The majority there wanted the rate cap. Generally people there were critical of the three projects the council had nominated, the lack of any earlier consultation on anything over the last few years and the absence of any council presence at the consultation after the opening. Since that consultation the vast majority of people I have spoken to, who know anything about the matter, want rates here capped and our council to be more efficient and comparable with our neighbours. Just go and meet some people and ask them. Brian Oates, Endeavour Hills.

Shots in online racism spat In my opinion, Mayor Aziz appears to exhibit certain traits associated with narcissism. He is unable to accept perceived slights and returns what he sees as an attack without thought or focus, making himself appear foolish when he is operating with incomplete information. What on earth did he hope to gain out of randomly picking someone to hold as representative, without understanding the back story? He has similarity in that respect, to a certain presumptive nominee for the candidacy to represent the Republican party at the US general election. It’s None Of Our Business But ... PERFORMERS at Casey Council events couldn’t say they were exactly drowning in royalties. Councillor Wayne Smith pointed out at a council meeting on 17 May that local performers were being paid as little as $50 for a gig - sometimes split between up to three group members. He said it was not fair payment for performers who are trained, provide their own instruments and equipment and, in some cases, are performing for their livelihoods. The ultimate insult was for performers being expected to play at council events simply for the “honour”. “It’s like councillors being honoured to serve without compensation for their efforts,” Cr Smith said.
Council officers will report back on a “fair and equitable” payment rate. SOME guys seem to have all the excuses for not attending court. A defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that his client was unavailable to face court because of “substantial grief” for his recently-deceased grandmother. He also had a medical certificate stating he was too unwell to work for the past two weeks. The lawyer also asked the court to bear in mind that the accused was planning to get married on 23 May, with a week’s honeymoon to follow. “I know it seems remarkable,” the lawyer said. The judge said with some incredulity: “So
we’re told he’s so unwell he can’t attend court yet he’s being married on Monday.” A police prosecutor said officers had tried to check if the accused had been working despite his ‘illness’. Unfortunately, the man’s employers had not been co-operative, the prosecutor said. The judge said it had got to the point that the matter had to proceed - and shifted it to another magistrate to hear that day. HERE’S a stark reminder of the lack of emergency housing in the south-east. A Dandenong magistrate told a lawyer that there was no long-term accommodation available for their client. “It’s usually just the Prince of Mark motel for two nights.”

Kylie and her son Alexander missed out on their local preschool last year, through no fault of their own and mum Kylie pushed for zoning restrictions on kindergartens in Casey due to the rising population. 148103 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Other educational grants available include up to $1.6 million to build children’s hubs for early years and family services, including maternal and child health services, playgroups and parenting support. These are besides $650,000 in grants to build brand-new early learning facilities and up to $350,000 for significant upgrades to existing facilities. In December last year, Casey Councillor Geoff Ablett said Pearcedale was in “desperate” need of another kindergarten facility. Saying the area had “grown exponentially and it needs to accommodate the numbers.” Ms Mikakos said, “we are boosting funds available for our highest growth areas.” “We are calling on local governments to apply for these grants so the right early childhood services are available to families close to home.”

AS families continue to miss out on preferred local kindergartens across Casey, missing out altogether is on the cards for Clyde North families. The State Government has announced grants to tackle rising kindergarten enrolments in some of Victoria’s fastest growing areas, as a Clyde North kindergarten hits capacity. Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos on Friday 13 May called on local councils and kindergartens to apply for grants to build and significantly refurbish kindergartens and children’s centres across the state. But Liberal MP for Bass Brian Paynter said communities in Casey would very soon be under serviced. The 2016/’17 Victorian Budget will provide $10 million to fund major capital projects for kinders in growth areas such as Casey. But Mr Paynter said $10 million across all the growth areas isn’t going to fit the bill. “There’s only one kinder in Clyde and it has hit capacity this year at 135 children,” he said. “The State Government only allocated $10 million, we need access to more funding than that if we are to ensure it’s allocated to our areas. “And if there’s ever an area in need, it’s Clyde North.” Casey council statistics show council-operated kindergarten enrolments alone grew by 9 per cent since 2014. “We really want to encourage people to live in these areas, but there are basic infrastructure needs that are a State Government responsibility,” Mr Paynter said. The $10 million injection comes on top of the State Government’s $50 million plan to provide modern and flexible early childhood centres across Victoria.

Fined for ignoring ‘fire’ notice THE owner of a vacant Lynbrook property was fined and placed on a good behaviour bond after of failing to comply with the directions of a fire prevention notice. Casey council successfully prosecuted the owner of Lynbrook Residential Investments in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court in April. The defendant was found guilty of one charge of failing to comply with the directions of a fire prevention notice. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced without conviction and placed on a good behaviour bond for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay council’s costs of $3069 and donate $1000 to the CFA. City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the large property was
covered in excessively long, dry grass and adjoined a high dependency palliative care facility that was potentially vulnerable in the event of a fire spreading across this property. Cr Aziz said the prosecution served as a reminder to all property owners of their obligations to regularly check and maintain their vacant blocks. “It is a requirement under council’s City of Casey Community Local Law that grass be kept below 30 centimetres in height throughout the year, with the only exception being when the land is otherwise utilised for feeding livestock. “Long grass not only poses a significant fire risk in the warmer months, but is also unsightly and can harbour vermin all year round.
“Now that the fire season has ended, residents with vacant property need to ensure they continue to maintain their blocks to a standard that is not detrimental to the general amenity of the neighbourhood, and that won’t encourage vermin in built up areas. “Council is frequently asked by concerned residents to investigate long grass and unsightly property complaints, and will take compliance action where breaches of the Local Law or Country Fire Authority Act are detected. “Council urges vacant property owners to develop their own maintenance program that prompts them to regularly inspect and treat their properties when they see the grass getting too long, particularly throughout the warmer months.“

THEY are record-breaking fishermen who are ensuring that Victorians can stay on the water safely. The Tooradin Marine Boat Licence course has a much lower failure rate than the VicRoads online equivalent. Organiser Bob O’Connell said the local classroom taught course appeals to all ages. “Our teacher Gordon Sanders has put 35,000 people through the marine licence course in 14 years - that’s the most in the state,” Mr O’Connell said. “We’ve only had one failure and he came in drunk,” he said, laughing. The success of the face-toface course has spread far and
wide over the years and even kept one happy boater in his house. “He was 86 years old, from Inverloch and he had his boat up for sale because he had failed the VicRoads test three times,” Mr O’Connell said. “His wife ended up doing our course as well and he put his arm around us and said, ‘you’ve just given us 10 more years on the water’. “He withdrew his house from the market and kept his boat so our course completely changed his mind.” The three-hour lecture and 40 question test is run out of the Tooradin Public Hall on the last Wednesday of the month. Mr O’Connell said people from Ballarat, Echuca, Bairns-
dale and even Western Australia have made special trips to do the course. “It’s been so successful for people my age who didn’t grow up with a computer in their hands,” he said. “But also for the younger generation who haven’t had the experience out on a boat, they get first-hand knowledge explained to them. “Often it’s the 12-year-olds who beat their parents!” The cost of the Tooradin Marine Boat Licence course had stayed the same for 14 years but recently it increased from $70 to $90. However it was still significantly cheaper than other classroom boat courses, Mr O’Connell said.

tion as part of a $5.7 million upgrade. Council officers will consider the offer, reporting back on the refit and ongoing cost of the building. Hampton Park Progress Association spokesman Tony O’Hara said the group preferred the school house remained on-site but it was “absolutely wonderful” that it may still be standing. “Other schools make their old buildings a focal point of their history but, unfortunately, they didn’t see it that way.” As reported in Star News this month, the school house was facing demolition as soon as October. It was exempt from protection, despite being covered by a heritage overlay.

HAMPTON Park Primary School’s original building could be shifted to a reserve and be home to a much-needed men’s shed under a solution hatched by the school and Casey councillors. The school has formally offered to relocate the 96-yearold school house to the nearby Marjorie Eastick Reserve in Regans Road and to donate it to the council. Councillor Damian Rosario told a Casey council meeting on 17 May that the relocation would be funded by the state Department of Education. He said the circa-1922 building - which was in “excellent condition” - could form a much-needed home for Hampton Park’s Men’s Shed group.
Currently the group meets at a community centre room that is shared by other groups but this arrangement makes storing tools and equipment “unworkable”, Cr Rosario said. “What we have here is a possibility,” he said - noting a popular social media campaign calling for the school house’s retention. “One of the benefits is we keep a heritage building in Hampton Park. “You can’t invent new heritage.” Principal Leonie King and six other members of the school stated in a letter to the council that the “single stand-alone room” was “limiting our students’ learning”. The building did not fit the school’s planned modernisa-

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Dandy’s working smarter By CASEY NEILL “MANUFACTURING keeps this country moving. We need manufacturing.“ Senator Kim Carr couldn’t have stated more clearly his support for the industry in Dandenong’s Drum Theatre. He was the keynote speaker at the Smart Manufacturing ’16 - Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show symposia on Tuesday 17 May. More than 1500 people registered for the event, part of a wider showcase that surrounded Harmony Square. Students from schools across the region, businesspeople and the general public flocked in their hundreds to view displays from successful manufacturers. Stories from businesses and live crosses played on the Harmony Square big screen and trains, trams and buses blocked Walker Street. Mr Carr said manufacturing was “the key to a strong and advanced industrial economy“ and employed nearly 9000 Australians. He said Federal Government support for research and development, education and bolstering overseas competitiveness was crucial - particularly given the impending departure of key automotive companies from Australia. “The shutdown of the major car makers doesn’t mean the end of the industry,“ he said. “I’m confident there will be an automotive sector in Austraila after 2017.“ Walkinshaw Automotive’s Lisa Dwyer explained at the Clayton company’s

display that it employed 200 people and made Holden special vehicles. “Days like these keep people interested in engineering - and doing it in Australia,“ she said. It also imports left-hand drive cars, pulls them apart and converts them to right-hand drive, and has engineer and design staff that also produce work for other companies. “With the looming exit of the car industry we want to diversify and keep people employed,“ she said. Dandenong Primary School teacher Nicolette Pratt was leading 45 Grade 5 students on a quest around the event zone, a question-sheet in hand and the answers pinned to various stalls. “We wanted to know what Dandenong makes,“ she said. “They were amazed to see the trains.“ A farm to plate section featured produce from Officer juice producer Summer Snow, Clyde’s Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs, and Gembrook po-
tato grower and potato product maker Mountain Harvest Foods. Maddel and Corex had on display a pop-up emergency shelter that goes from flat-packed to liveable in 15 minutes - created in Dandenong. “We’re developing a unit for a field hospital,“ Ian Harrison from Maddel said. “This is the first year we’ve had manufacturing capacity. “This is the year we’re really going to launch.“ Dandenong South’s Hilton Manufacturing put on a barbecue to raise cash for State Schools’ Relief Fund, which supplies school uniforms to underprivileged children. Managing director Todd Hartley said they had 1500 snags to cook - or one every nine seconds - and hoped to raise $1000. He also had traffic management screens on display and new LED outdoor entertainment systems. “We’ve been round for 35 years as a
subcontractor to businesses,“ Mr Hartley said. “This is our first time owning our own intellectual property. “It’s a change of direction for the business.“ IVECO brought a 1969 Acco truck alongside two new vehicles.
The Dandenong-based company sourced it from a farm shed in Dolby, Queensland, for Linfox for its 40th birthday celebrations. Linfox originally use it to deliver Carlton and United Breweries products. Ward Petherbridge from Waste Converters and Committee for Dandenong set up an interactive display, including painting and planting - all with recycled materials at the centre. The Dandenong South company is applying for Future Industries Fund cash for a $15-$20 million integrated resource recovery facility project. It will harvest recyclables and convert residual waste into fuel. Chromaflo Technologies invited guests to create their own paint colours. The Dandenong South manufacturer produces colouring for paint, plastics and more.

$100 million traffic fines CASEY families are racking up huge bills on unpaid and accumulated transport fines but an overhaul of the entire State Government infringement system is set to bring much-needed clarity. In February the executive officer at Casey North Information and Support Service, Susan Magee, wrote to Attorney-General Martin Pakula advocating for a six-month, state-wide amnesty on administration fees attached to unpaid traffic fines. Ms Magee revealed how crippling the accumulated debt and fees were becoming for the thousands of Casey residents struggling to pay back fines. “We have Casey residents come in carrying shopping bags full of unopened fines and it’s affecting all aspects of their lives,” Ms Magee told Star News. In the letter, Ms Magee wrote: “Almost 30,000 Casey residents presently owe $102 million” in road fines, which amounts to “more than 10 per cent of the Casey population”.
Mr Pakula met with Ms Magee in person last month to advise of the current system reform and his reluctance to consider an amnesty until the system was fully updated. “It was a positive meeting,” Ms Magee said. “The reforms will hopefully make it easier for the public to navigate - if they had done nothing to improve the frustrating system I would have pushed for an amnesty.” The State Government’s improved infringement system is set to become active by 2017 and will include the consolidation of fines. This will allow all infringements to be dealt with in one payment arrangement. Under the reformed system those in acute financial hardship will be able to pay for their fines through the Work and Development Permit scheme. This means vulnerable people can pay back their debt through non-finance options, such as community work, treatment, life skills and vocational courses. Among other amendments

to the complicated system, Ms Magee said the format of correspondence would be reviewed. “It will take a more readerfriendly format that should be easier to understand,” she said. In response to the scope of the growing debt in the southeast, the State Government’s Department of Justice and Regulation dished out $100,000 over two years, to the Peninsula Community Legal Centre (PCLC). The cash injection was to fund fine clinics to inform the public of their legal rights. PCLC CEO, Jackie Galloway said the clinics started in January and had been “well utilised” so far. “The clinics will run over two years and are in response to the emerging legal need in the community,” she said. Training sessions for local community support workers have also started. Ms Galloway said one of the sessions has been booked out and another is planned. By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE stark odds are that in every classroom, one in five children has a parent with mental illness. Community health organisations Windermere Child and Family Services and EACH offer a support program that helps destigmatise mental health in primary schools in Melbourne’s south east. EACH regional manager Lisa Gort said that the Supporting Kids in Primary Schools (SKIPS) program provides a “language” to understand and talk about the issue. “If you’ve got a mum dying with cancer, the school community understands it,” Ms Gort said. “But if mum or dad has mental health issues and you’re not getting to school on time, that’s a harder thing to understand. “Sometimes we’re well physically and unwell mentally. The question is how we support parents and children in this situation.” The program is an early-intervention model working in classrooms, parent info sessions and workshops for teachers. The topic is broached directly, demythologised by speakers who have “lived experience”. It gives tools for schools and parents to support children and families affected by mental illness. “Studies show where there’s a parent with a

Just marvellous By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a force building with Casey’s underworld of fans for comics, sci-fi, super heroes, action figures and video games. Roy Condeza, who is organising the first pop-culture mini-convention for the region on 28 May, says there’s no shortage of collectors in the south-east growth corridor. The movement in Casey started as a trade day. It has blossomed into an event expected to attract up to 500 local and interstate collectors. It will include a swap meet of collectibles as well as video games for play, cosplay which is short for costume play, club sign ups and custom artists of toys and comics. Mr Condeza says the region’s plentiful pop-culture collectors are starved of such opportunities. There are no nearby retailers, and few hubs to meet - outside of a Berwick Market vintage toy stall and social media, he says. The Narre Warren collector’s specimens start with 1980s Masters of the Universe figures such as He-Man and Skeletor. It has evolved to about 6000 items including books and a newest customised version of Castle Grayskull. “It’s small compared to the biggest collections but I’m happy to say my entire collection hasn’t been bought on e-Bay. “I’ve done the hard yards of garage sales and toy meets.” When pressed on how his passion has endured, he says there’s a special thrill in acquiring a new collectible. “There’s a couple of guys who when they get their hands on a comic, they won’t talk to you. They just want to sit and read it straightaway.” Unlike some collectors, Mr Condeza is an “opener” - meaning he’s not scared to take his action figures out of the box. “As soon as you open the box, straightaway 50 per cent or more of its value is reduced. “But I want to sit down one day and have

100 action figures out to play with my kids in one go.” Trending in pop-culture are the Marvel movies based on comics, such as Avengers, Harley Quinn and Batman v Superman, he says. For the record, Mr Condeza’s a fan of the Batman v Superman flick that has been rejected by 1970s vintage-superhero followers. But it’s a debate in which the pre-teen upand-comers “hold their own” against their elders. “We’re loving it, celebrating that it’s evolving to something more realistic,” Mr Condeza says. The pop culture event is at Narre Community Learning Centre, Webb Street, Narre Warren on 28 May, from 3pm-8pm. For details phone 0402 019 201.

Drive to make a difference ELAINE Smith, the founder and driving force behind the Women’s Friendship Cafe in Hampton Park, is Casey’s volunteer of the year. The City of Casey recognised the groups and individuals who enrich the community and lives of others through their volunteering efforts at the 2016 Casey Volunteer Awards on Friday 13 May. The council hosted an awards ceremony at the Lynbrook Community Centre during National Volunteer Week. The Friendship Cafe provides a safe and welcoming environment for women from all cultural backgrounds to relax, make friends, share experiences, learn new ideas and skills and find pathways to connect to services and opportunities. Mayor Sam Aziz said Elaine’s commitment to new migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and their families is evident in her work at the café. Many lives have been enriched thanks to her volunteering efforts. Jery Burniston was named the young volunteer of the year. Jery has been an active volunteer member of the Casey Youth Action Committee for two years. He is also a member of the Unite Alliance and has worked tirelessly in this group to run events and raise awareness around issues for same sex attracted and gender diverse young people in Casey and surrounds. Jery also volunteers with Man Cave, a mentoring program for boys aged 13-17. Jery has taken on a leadership and mentoring role in this program where he encourages young people who need support, boosts team morale and helps staff with the organisation and delivering of events. Jery is also the SRC representative at his school.
Fourteen-year-old Kathleen Foley was highly commended in the youth category. The group award went to the Narre Warren State Emergency Service. The Narre Warren SES is the primary response agency for flood and storm events across the City of Casey. While state offices are staffed, the local unit is run solely by volunteers. The unit responds to more than 500 requests for assistance each year and is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Casey Volunteering Pair Award went to Christopher Morgan and Vanessa Watson. Vanessa and Christopher work hard to put on events for the Lynbrook community and surrounds. In the past few years they have hosted several big and small free events including the Holi Festival of Colours, Lynbrook Lake Lantern Festival, Halloween in the Park, Pancake Day, Moonlight Cinema, Christmas Movie and Carols and Clean
Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and councillors Amanda Stapledon and Susan Serey with the winners of this year's volunteer awards. Up Australia Day. These events attract hundreds of people and are solely run by volunteers who are led and in-
spired by Vanessa and Christopher. Both Vanessa and Christopher have also been active members of the Lynbrook School Council and Vanessa moderates the Lynbrook Social Facebook page, which has more than 1700 followers. South East Palliative Care won the Casey Volunteer Organisation Award. The volunteers at South East Palliative Care are a diverse group, made up of dedicated people who have a passion for improving the lives of clients and carers with life-limiting illness. Approximately 50 volunteers perform a valuable service in the community, including roles in family support, administration, ambassadors and bereavement support. The volunteers support more than 780 clients, multiple carers and approximately 50 staff. St Vincent de Paul’s Berwick Soup Van was highly commended.

Diversity spreads the talent THE ever-evolving media landscape is in good hands if the calibre of grant recipients in the 2016 Herb Thomas Memorial Trust Awards is any indication, Star News Group managing director Paul Thomas told a presentation dinner. Responding on behalf of his family, Mr Thomas said the five awardees not only spoke and presented themselves well but displayed a depth of talent across all media platforms. He said the media industry was becoming more diverse every day and journalists needed to be able to adapt to the many mediums people now used to digest their news. The award recipients at the Wednesday 4 May event were RMIT graphic design student Maria Vinogradova, RMIT journalism graduate Mark Kearney, Monash University journalism graduates Anna Harcourt, Nardine Groch and Sally Hayles. The trustees Roger Hall, George Blenkhorn, Gary Evans, Terry Williams and Mike Tyler were joined by Paul’s father Ian interviewing the 10 candidates. They also reflected on the high standard this year. Ms Vinogradova grew up in Russia with a passion for music and the arts. She attended music college and university in Russia and decided on a change of career when moving to Australia. She enrolled in a Certificate IV in design at RMIT and has not looked back. “In Australia I saw that it is never too late to change your career and try something new, or to dare to pursue one’s dreams,” she said. Ms Vinogradova intends to use the grant money to upgrade her computer to enable her to complete more complex work and to participate in a range of workshops and conferences to hone her skills. She would eventually like to return
Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and Cardinia Mayor Jodie Owen with the recipients, from left, Sally Hayles, Anna Harcourt, Marie Vinogradova, Mark Kearney and Nardine Groch. 153829 to teaching to pass on her design skills to a younger generation of students. Mr Kearney also had a career change, opting to study journalism at RMIT after six years teaching in schools across Melbourne and in London. Late last year he joined the newsroom at the Bendigo Advertiser and said he loves the connection with the community and social responsibility that the job brings. “It really satisfies me in a way my previous career did not,” he said. “I love that every day is different and I love that I can bring my interests and expertise into the workplace, finding stories that relate to education, social
justice and the arts,” he said. He said he would splint the grant money between buying a camera and sound recording equipment - the latter to pursue his passion for longer form reporting, particularly podcasting. For Ms Harcourt, the grant money fulfils a more basic requirement - buying groceries and paying the rent. The New Zealander knows how to keep busy, supplementing her undergraduate degree in Monash University’s School of Media Film and Journalism with countless internships. In her limited spare time, she also helped conceive an online dating podcast called It’s a Match.
Ms Harcourt said there was a three month stint where she did not have a day off and she was not paid for the bulk of that time. “The reality of the journalism industry is that it is impossible to get a job without multiple internships under your belt,” she explained. “I don’t say that as a complaint… the experience and exposure I get through these internships is invaluable.” She loves broadcast journalism and aims to land a job as a television reporter within a year. Ms Groch, a post graduate student at Monash’s School of Media Film and Journalism, describes herself as an envi-
ronmental journalist and videographer who has already travelled the world to pursue her passion. She spent her final semester of a double masters’ degree in Journalism and Environmental Sustainability as an accredited freelance journalist at the COP21 climate change conference in Paris where she rubbed shoulders not only with 3000 colleagues from around the world but also with the likes of US president Barack Obama. “I took a photo of Barack Obama with the same lens I used to take a photo of a polar bear,” she told guests at the trust dinner. Ms Groch has supplemented her studies by working as a wildlife photographer with Zoos Victoria for the past seven years. She would like to use the trust money to study a masters of wildlife filmmaking at the University of the West of England in Bristol, where she would be mentored by top producers from the BBC’s Natural History Unit. Ms Hales, a third year batchelor of journalism student at Monash Caulfield, will also now fulfil overseas ambitions with the trust grant. She would like to apply for a journalism unit that involves travelling to Cambodia to join a study tour with the Engineers Without Borders group. “This would allow me to gain international in-the-field experience using video equipment and expand my knowledge of cross-cultural reporting,” she said. “This would be invaluable for my career.” Ms Hales had a background in youth social work which sparked her interest in journalism. “I realised I wanted to be able to tell people’s stories and investigate issues that were impacting on the people around me and the global community,” she said.

HEARTFELT HOME RADIATES WARMTH EVERYONE agrees that the kitchen is the heart of the home, which is why Inspired Homes designs its houses so that all of the living areas radiate out of this heart. The Inspired Homes signature design angles the kitchen so that it does not face a side fence but instead positions the kitchen to look directly through to the alfresco living area. Inspired kitchens are designed with the modern chef in mind. Generous bench space and luxury fittings as standard mean that it is not only functional but is the perfect kitchen for the sophisticated entertainer. All Inspired kitchens are set up well for
large-scale cooking and entertaining. An optional butler’s pantry provides a separate preparation and wash-up area to keep the main kitchen tidy while entertaining guests. As standard, Inspired Homes kitchens feature 20mm Caesarstone benchtops, soft close drawers, a Smeg 900mm stainless steel upright cooker and a Smeg rangehood. For a limited time buyers can receive $26,000 of additional upgrades across the entire house for only $8,999 with the Everything Including the Kitchen Sink promotion. Inclusions feature a Smeg stainless steel fridge freezer with ice-maker, grand
island bench of 1200mm x 40mm, 20 LED downlights, Butler’s Pantry cabinetry and much more. Experience the luxury of not simply choosing a layout from a catalogue but rather creating your own unique home around the central kitchen, living, dining and alfresco areas. Using the Inspired modular design system that divides floor plans into three parts (front, middle, and back) means that buyers can create their your own individual layout. The Home Creator Tool on Inspired Homes’ website brings this modular design system to life to allow buyers to play with floor plans like a jigsaw puzzle to get the

Spinal Health Week - Medically Speaking

Volunteers provide hospital’s lifeblood NATIONAL Volunteer Week from 9-13 May was established in 1989 as a way of recognising and thanking the more than 6 million Australians who volunteer in the community. At St John of God Berwick Hospital the volunteer workforce is a vital part of the daily operations. The volunteer service commenced in 2008 and has grown to include many services. Volunteer roles provide support to caregivers in most areas of the hospital, including clerical support in the form of assembling packages of information
for mail-outs, serving refreshments to patients attending the new Day Oncology Unit, providing a courier service between departments, and supporting caregivers in the clinical areas of the hospital. Lisa Norman, CEO at St John of God Berwick Hospital said: “Our volunteers are energetic, passionate and caring. “Many choose to volunteer at the hospital after being a patient here or have had a loved one attend the hospital as a patient. “It’s heart-warming that they wish to ‘give back’ to help others and, of course, we are immensely grateful that they do.”
Our volunteers come from varied backgrounds and all have different reasons behind their desire to donate their time and help others. Debbie Bracker is a Berwick resident who has grown children and five grandchildren and regularly volunteers at the Day Oncology Centre. “I have volunteered at the hospital for around two years now. I’ve never regretted a minute. It feels so good to put a smile on someone’s face and help them feel better. It’s rewarding to give something back to the community.” Gillian Coyle, co-ordinator of Volun-
Doctor goes with the flow DR LOUIS Loizou isn’t vain but he sure knows about veins. Phlebologist Dr Loizou has been running Vein Solutions in Narre Warren for the past 15 years and has been treating all types of vein abnormalities for more than two decades. “I provide treatment for abnormal leg veins of all types from spiderveins to varicose veins and leg ulcers,” Dr Loizou said. “I provide minimally invasive leg vein treatments requiring no hospitalisation, no general anaesthetic - virtually back to work immediately. “What makes Vein Solutions different is that we offer basically walk in and walk out procedures that are proven to be very effective negating the need
for hospitalisation.” Vein Solution also offers a discount to pensioners and health care card holders. The focus of the business, according to Dr Loizou is leg veins that are abnormal including spider veins and varicose veins. “We provide a full comprehensive assessment which includes investigation with Duplex Scanning,” he said. Find Vein Solutions at the Narre Warren Specialist Centre, at the corner of Prospect Hill Road and Narre Warren North Road. Open Monday to Wednesday 9am to 5.30pm. Phone 8790 3352 or 9855 0990. For further information visit their website www.veinsolutions.com.au
teer Services said: “We have a fantastic group of people with a diverse range of skills and life experience who offer their time and services to the hospital. “Their contribution greatly enhances the personal care we provide to our patients.” The program has extended to people of all ages and a number of new roles have been created to facilitate the increase in volunteer numbers. St John of God Berwick Hospital would like to thank all of the volunteers. For more on the volunteer program, contact Gillian Coyle on 8793 1295.

Ace bowler takes the cake By JARROD POTTER CHARGING in all cricket season at Casey Fields has paid off for Nathan Lambden, who has been selected for Cricket Victoria’s Futures League Academy - Winter Squad. The state’s high performance coaches have put the 23-year-old paceman, from Cranbourne, into the squad after an outstanding first Victorian Premer Cricket season with Casey-South Melbourne. Lambden led a new-look, new-ball attack for the Swans this summer, after switching from Dandenong, and finished up with 29 wickets for 2015/16 at 20.7. He was also called up to the Victorian Premier Cricket All Stars side, which took on the Melbourne Stars in an exhibition Twenty20 match at Casey Fields in December. Lambden was thrilled to get his chance to work on his game at the elite level over the off-season and hoped he could impress enough to get a call up to the next level in the Bushrangers’ pathway. “It was pretty good - I got an email last week about it and was pretty stoked and pretty surprised to be honest as there’s a lot of good cricketers out there,” Lambden said. “I had a pretty good year - there’s still a few things I need to work on and improve on and I’ve worked extremely hard to get to where I have now. “To take the next step I’ve got to start working even harder now to prove to selectors and play a step higher this season coming, but there’s still a long way to go.” The squad will train together at the MCG once a week on a Thursday
Casey-South Melbourne's Nathan Lambden will spend the winter training up with the Futures League Academy - Winter Squad. 149891 Picture: JARROD POTTER throughout winter under the tutelage of Victoria’s high performance coaches. Lambden and the other selected squad members will complete around 15 sessions - a combination of skills, strength and conditioning and performance management sessions. The Swans’ spearhead wanted to make
his mark on the training sessions and put his hand up for higher opportunities. “The experience of training with the best cricketers, having the best coaches with us - obviously lots to improve and there’s things I need to improve on,” Lambden said. “So hopefully walk away with the
experience and knowledge and talking to some of the best cricketers going around and learning a few tricks off those blokes. “I think I need to work on my consistency the most - I wasn’t too happy with the consistency last year. “I’d bowl three or four good balls
Big-kicking Adam gives goal record the boot By JARROD POTTER ADAM Amin had plenty to smile about recently as he broke Glen Waverley Hawks’ club goal-kicking record with a bag of 20 goals two weekends ago. Amin, 20, from Narre Warren South, had it on a string last Saturday as his battled Nunawading in an Eastern Football League (EFL) Division 4 clash last week. While it was one-sided from the get-go, as the Hawks kicked 47.23 (305) to Nunawading’s 0.0 (0), it took a while for Amin to find his mark on the match. He only had one to quarter time, but he unleashed after that. Booting them at will, the Hawks full forward stood and truly delivered against the battling Lions. Amin, or ‘Kebabs’ as he’s known at the Hawks, started his rampage properly in the second quarter as he snagged nine to have a lazy 10 before half-time. “I wasn’t actually thinking much because after the first
Narre Warren South sporting star Adam Amin booted 20 goals in a single game for his beloved Glen Waverley Hawks. 154255 Picture: JARROD POTTER quarter I only had one,” Amin said. “But I kicked nine in the second, so after that I thought it was day done but I kept getting the ball fed to me. “More contested marking and set shots and a couple from the goal-square - cheeky handballs over the top ... it was all pretty straightforward - nothing fancy just set shots from the 20 or 30, 40 out.” He didn’t have to keep count of the mountainous total he was racking up either - as one of the club faithful kept a running tally. “There was a bloke behind
the goals and he was telling me - I beat the club record that was 13,” Amin said. “And I’m known by Kebabs in football, not Adam, so this bloke goes ‘Kebabs, you’re on 12 - one to go’ and he’s just counting all the goals. “In the last quarter I was on 16 and he goes half way through ‘you’ve been goalless in this last term’ and in six or seven minutes I kicked four more. “In the moment everything clicked, even with our football, because the team was outstanding and delivery really hit the forwards up and
it all clicked and we got the win.” He’s loved his time in the blue and gold, since switching from North Dandenong in the South East Juniors a few years ago to follow a junior coach, and relished his first senior game as a 17-year-old a few years back. “Always played my junior football at North Dandy and my coach played footy at Glen Waverley and got a coaching role at the under17s and just told me I’m playing - so I’ve moved there and gone well ever since. “Good competition, even though we’re playing Divvy 4 - I don’t really take my footy that seriously as other people do - it keeps me fit, allows me to run around and spend Saturdays with mates.” Amin’s athletic acumen isn’t reserved just for the winter months either as the sporting all-rounder also finds himself regularly in the papers as an up-and-coming wicketkeeper-batsman for Greenvale Kangaroos in Victorian Premier Cricket.
then one would get away for four and stuff like that - just some technical things I want to improve.” Pearcedale’s Ben Ashkenazi - who plays for Frankston-Peninsula Heat has also been selected in the academy. The program commences on Thursday 9 June.
Aura Vale to switch cricket camps? By RUSSELL BENNETT FERNTREE Gully District Cricket Association outfit Aura Vale has voted to make the switch to West Gippsland from season 2016/17 onwards. The Gazette understands the decision was made at a recent Lakers club meeting, with the overriding factor behind the decision being a financial one. The club doesn’t feel like it can compete in the cut-throat Ferntree Gully and District competition. In fact, some within the club fear that if the move doesn’t happen, the club itself will struggle to stay afloat. The move still has to be accepted by a league-wide vote at the West Gippsland Cricket Association annual general meeting on 30 May, but it is believed that is just a formality. But Aura Vale isn’t the only new club destined for West Gippsland, with another club’s switch from the Melbourne Champions Cricket League - where Kalgidhar Cricket Club originated - also subject to approval.
One Lakers official said 75 per cent of the club had to vote in favour of the move to the WGCA, which happened at the recent meeting. “We just can’t compete financially in the Ferntree Gully league,” he said. “The expenses are ridiculous.” The official said many of the club’s members live in areas such as Narre Warren and Berwick, meaning the travel involved in the WGCA is actually less than if the Lakers stayed in their current league. He said the club’s members were not only excited by the prospect of the move, but many would leave if it doesn’t go through. “We’d struggle to have a club,” he said. The Lakers have three senior teams, and three junior teams which are all merged with other clubs. The Gazette understands that their next vote will be on whether or not those junior sides will stay in the FTGDCA until the club is firmly established in West Gippsland.

Wet sail scalp By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 6 REVIEW COMING home with a wetsail on its seaside journey to Sandringham, Casey Scorpions picked up another big scalp to keep their VFL top-billing. The howling gales that greet Casey Fields weekly seemed to travel with the Scorpions out to Sandringham and for the visitors it looked dire at quarter time. Sandringham jumped out of the blocks to boot a five-goal lead through the likes of Trent Dennis-Lane and Cameron Shenton. A big sea change was in order for the Scorpions in the second term, and Justin Plapp’s men delivered in the sea-spray. A nine-goal second term left Zebras’ fans speechless as the Scorpions showed no mercy in blowing straight past the deficit. The hard-hitting forwards Liam Hulett (two goals), Sam Weiderman (two goals) and Chris Dawes (two goals) gave the mids plenty to kick to as Casey surged straight past the hosts. While the second term showed the side’s knack with the wind, the third term proved Casey’s tenacity to fight against it. The club relished the goals from Jaxon Briggs, Eddie Morris, Chris Dawes, James Munro and Tim Smith earned the hard way - battling the on-shore wind at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
Casey Scorpions celebrated arguably their hardest win of the season with a gutsy comeback against Sandringham. Picture: MORGAN HANCOCK PHOTOGRAPHY
The fleet-footed midfielders had it on a string, especially Casey-listed tandem Munro (three goals) and Morris (two goals) - made every touch count. “It was a pretty solid win after starting slowly - weren’t great conditions and was a big advantage to one end with the conditions,” Plapp said. “We got off to a really slow start and were lucky enough that we adjusted to a few things and lacked intensity and work rate and fixed that up.” Plapp praised the side for bouncing back in the third term, putting behind them the average first quarter against the breeze to really ramp up the pressure from every man in the squad. “We were able to hit the scoreboard in the second but the third really set us up and kicked goals against the wind - had the
momentum and a lot of contributors,” Plapp said. Alex Neal-Bullen (39 disposals) has knocked down the door again and would be well in line for an AFL call-up after his third 30-possession match this season, while Ben Newton (30), Lynden Dunn (28) and Jack Trengove (26) are also in the AFL mix. The high-flying Scorpions - sitting on top of the VFL ladder - have another tough ask this week as they battle third ranked Box Hill at home on Saturday night.

Cranbourne suffer last quarter woes By JARROD POTTER VWFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 6 WINDY old Casey Fields wreaked havoc with Cranbourne’s chance of a VWFL Womens’ upset after a twopoint final term deficit against VU Western Spurs blew out to a 48-point loss. In the end, the Eagles were battered about by the Spurs and the zephyrs alike at their home base. After three quarters of hardfought, contested footy, Cranbourne was only two down at the last break, but battling against the wind in the last, Cranbourne coach Kris Smith implored his side to hold up their end of the bargain and fight it out. All the good work was washed away in a quarter though as VU Western’s Jess Francke (four goals) decided to rampage over another Cranbourne-based sporting side - after she helped defeat the Casey Cavaliers in a Big V basketball grand final series three years ago. Cranbourne couldn’t run it out in the end as unavailable midfielders Ash Fennell and Leah Olsson left a hole in the centre. “They had the wind in the last quarter and it was probably a five-goal wind and we were only two points down at three quarter time,” Smith said. “The ball was in their court, see how hard they want to work. “The wind helped them and we were lacking a few soldiers few key injuries at the moment that are hurting - so we don’t have the midfield rotations set up right because of those injuries. “Gun midfielders that you can’t just replace with anyone we’ve got girls that are developing and aren’t at that level yet, but good to throw them in there and give them a shot.”
Dani Hardiman - pictured playing against Melbourne Uni was great in defence for Cranbourne in a tough finish to its clash against VU Western Spurs. 152979 Picture: JARROD POTTER Cranbourne sits eighth on the 10-team ladder at the moment and will battle the Eastern Devils away on Sunday 29 May. While the break is handy, Smith thinks the real aim has to be working hard on the training track to run out these matches, after a similar fade-out against Diamond Creek in recent weeks. “We’re playing the first 7075 minutes well, no worries there, but we’ve got to add that extra 20-25 on to get to the next level,” Smith said. “It’s not the end of the world, we’re just two years into what I think is a fiveyear program and at the end of those five years we should be up there. “The girls were pretty dejected after the game but all is not lost.” Smith praised Corrine Cullis and Dani Hardiman in defence, Marlie Tatham and Tess McEvoy in the guts, while the Moody sisters, Cara and Bree, continued a solid start to 2016. It isn’t a weekend off for every Eagle though as Hardiman will represent Melbourne in her
second AFL match, this time against Queensland in the next match of the AFL Exhibition Series. The game is a curtainraiser for the Melbourne versus Brisbane match on Sunday at the MCG.

O’Hare back at the Seagulls By RUSSELL BENNETT THE Seagulls’ favourite son the big man who can do it all with bat and ball - is back at the nest. In a staggering development set to vault Tooradin even further into premiership contention in the top tier of the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA), star all-rounder Cal O’Hare has returned to the club after a season with Buckley Ridges in the Dandenong District Cricket Association. Though his numbers weren’t at their usual level for Buckley in Turf 1 last year, O’Hare is set cause all sorts of hurt to the Seagulls’ Premier opposition this season. He, Aaron Avery and new recruit Russell Lehman - a multiple-premiership winner from Pakenham - are quite simply three of the very best allrounders in the modern era of the WGCA and team mate Tom Hussey stands clear as one of its best ever batsmen. Since the 2007/08 season, O’Hare has scored 3313 runs across all WGCA competition - including four centuries. He has also taken 211 wickets in
Cal O’Hare will be back in Tooradin colours from next Picture: ROB CAREW season. 135980 that time - including eight fivewicket hauls - at an average of just 18.32. He’s made the sixth-most amount of runs in the history of the WGCA’s Premier division (2379) and is one of the top three wicket-takers with 145. And he’s still only 27 years old. In announcing O’Hare’s return to the Seagulls’ nest, Tooradin president Kane Latham said: “We are thrilled to have Cal O’Hare join us again.
“Cal was missed as much off the field as he was on it. He’s obviously one of the most consistent, genuine all-rounders in WGCA history.” Latham said O’Hare’s Terry Stephenson and Glasscock Medals were proof of that. “To add him and Russell Lehman to our young and very talented line up is a dream come true. To say we are excited for the upcoming season would be an understatement."

Jock’s boys do it By DAVID NAGEL SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE AFL VICTORIA COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW THE four-year unbeaten run of the South East Football Netball League will be challenged like never before when it takes on the Murray League in the AFL Victoria Community Championship clash at Mulwala on Saturday. Coached by interleague legend Michael ‘Jock’ Holland, the final squad of 23 will run onto Lonsdale Reserve minus some of the great players who have led the charge in recent years. SEFNL will be missing its two most capped players, Michael Collins and Marc Holt, who alongside Holland have engendered a spirit that is rare and unique in country football. But Holland is excited by a new group that sees only nine players return from last year’s victory over Sunraysia. “We’ve picked up a few injuries but every player in the final 23 thoroughly deserves their spot, they’re all in form and ready to play their best for the league,” Holland said. Holt was also named co-captain of this squad with Berwick’s Michael Harold, who Holland said had admirable qualities as a leader. “Obviously with Holty going down Micky becomes our captain and I couldn’t be happier with a bloke like him in the role,” he said. “He’s a fantastic leader but not just in a football sense, he’s a great leader of men as well. He’ll do a great job, and I think blokes like Brandon Osborne and Troy McDermott are ready to step up as well. To be honest, I expect all of our players to be leaders in some sort of capacity on the day.” SEFNL won’t be overly tall, with Beaconsfield star Scott Meyer set to carry the can in the ruck, with support coming from Narre Warren pair Jake Richardson and Jordyn Flannery. There is plenty of drive off half back, with Ash Smith and Luke BeeHugo, while Josh Tonna and Luke Walker are sure to mesmerise with their dangerous left boots. Clarke and Kearns will need support from Mark Weekes, and lively youngsters Jake Smith and Zac Roscoe if the Demons are to kick a winning score. Saturday’s clash starts at 1pm, preceded by an Under 18 clash between the two leagues at 10.30am.

ROUND 6 THE proof is in the pudding - Narre Warren is a genuine top-three contender after the Magpies scored their best win of the season over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Trailing by 29 points at quarter time, the Magpies kicked 13 goals to six, including 6.7 to 1.2 in a wind-assisted second term, to claim a 16-point victory. The Magpies were led brilliantly by cocaptain’s Michael Collins and Dylan Quirk, while Marc Holt kicked four for the Eagles before injury hit in the second half. In other games, Beaconsfield stars Daniel Mislicki and Scott Meyer lifted their side to a five-point victory over Pakenham, Berwick remains unbeaten after a four-goal of Tooradin, while Officer made it three wins from its last four outings with a 62-point victory over Hampton Park. Matty Clarke warmed up for interleague with four goals for the Kangaroos, while James Waldon, Dylan Chapman and Brandon Moore were dangerous around the ground. SEFNL will resume with round 7, on Saturday 28 May.

League squad a class outfit all around By DAVID NAGEL

NARRE Warren premiership coach Jade Heinrich has achieved many things in the sport, but will enter a new frontier with Saturday’s interleague clash between SEFNL and Murray at Mulwala. Jade and her husband Greg will have the prestigious honour of coaching the South East Football Netball’s League’s first ever netball campaign after Sunraysia couldn’t muster a side for its trip to Casey Fields last year. Jade, who has played interleague for the Goulburn Valley and Yarra Valley in the past, said the pride of SEFNL rested nicely on her and Greg’s shoulders. “We’ve always been massive supporters of the concept, it’s such a great idea and a prestigious thing to represent your league,” Jade said. “We won’t be happy unless we come back with the win and we’re more than happy with the depth of the squad that’s been selected.” Narre Warren defenders Tracey Dell and Kara Hargrave will join forces with Pakenham dynamo Olivia Hunt as the stoppers, while Pakenham’s Megan Rosser, Beaconsfield’s Bianca Sanzaro and Narre Warren youngster Kealeigh Brown will share the pressure of shooting the SEFNL to a winning score. And with mid-courters like Leigh Taylor and
Erin Clark from Narre Warren, Kaela Hughes from Beaconsfield, and Pakenham superstar and interleague stalwart Meaghan Winter in the midcourt -there’ll be every opportunity to do so. The SEFNL 17 and Under team will take on the Murray League at 10.30am, with the seniors to follow at noon. Round 6 in SEFNL went pretty much according to script, with Beaconsfield’s five-goal victory over Pakenham the closest result of the day. Eagles’ coach Simon O’Shanassy shared the load giving 10 players at least half a game on the weekend in a game that was a make or break for his season. He has a very simple philosophy when it comes to his youngsters. “I like to win like the next person, but the young kids need the exposure,” O’Shanassy said. “But it’s not just us, Pakenham has the same intentions, an established club that is really trying to develop its youth and it was a great game on the weekend.” After an even start, Beacy blew the Lions away with an 11-6 second quarter to take a seven-goal lead into half time. Courtney Davey, Amanda McKenna and Ciara Nelson played second halves for the Eagles, while Samantha Jelo and Olivia Hunt worked their backsides off in the Lions in defence.
Tooradin has ended its two-game losing streak in emphatic style, riding a super-fast start to a 50-31 victory over Berwick at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls exploded out of the blocks, with Emma Iacovou (GA) and coach Kelly Haynes (GS) sharing the goal-scoring duties in a first quarter that saw the Seagulls dominate with 15 goals to four. Hampton Park used the mandatory seven players in its 51-40 triumph over ROC at Robert Booth Reserve, while some brilliant individual battles provided the highlights in Narre Warren’s 45-24 victory over Cranbourne at Casey Fields. Key match-ups included gun Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil (GK) taking on up-and-coming Magpie shooter Gabby Dwyer (GS), while the duel between Sharni Lambden (GD) and Tayla Shannon (GA) saw some brilliant netball played at times. Doveton had the bye. SEFNL NETBALL SQUADS SENIORS: BEACONSFIELD - Kaela Hughes, Bianca Sanzaro, NARRE WARREN - Kealeigh Brown, Erin Clark, Tracey Dell, Kara Hargrave, Leigh Taylor, PAKENHAM - Olivia Hunt, Megan Rosser, Meaghan Winter. 17 AND UNDER: BEACONSFIELD - Tiana Butler, CRANBOURNE - Hailey Galpin, HAMPTON PARK - Mia Palmer, NARRE WARREN - Tamika Cairns, Caitlin Egan, Madison Nation, Caity Stephens, PAKENHAM - Chloe Bluhm, Kyra Esler, Emma Jones.

Cavs too good By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 8 HUNTING the Gators was a piece of cake for Casey Cavaliers, as the home side thumped the visiting women 81-59. The middle-terms proved the happiest hunting ground for Michael Davies’ charges, as the likes of Amy Mcfarlane (19 points, seven assists), captain Ruchelle McCracken (10 points, nine rebounds) and up-and-comer Lauren Tuplin (13 points) went to town and returned home with a swag full of stats. McCracken in particular made some massive rebounds when it mattered most through the first half - snaring them at both ends and dialling up the pressure on Altona. Her inside-outside game was just as problematic - with a step-back jumper or push to the ring equally as dangerous. But despite the impressive scoreline, Casey coach Michael Davies thought the side didn’t ramp up their best ball at all in the first half. “The first was probably a bit sloppy in terms of our execution and shot selection wasn’t pretty,” Davies said. “They’re a long, wiry team - pretty hard to match up in that
sense - so it took us out of our normal game a bit, but second half we just got back to doing what we do well.” Guard Cyanne Mather (six points, six rebounds) also created a ton of headaches for the visitors, with the guard’s speed constantly finding out the Gators’ D and drawing fouls. “That was great when Cyanne joined us - because last year Amy had to run the point and defend the point which is a tough ask for anyone,” Davies said. “Cyanne running the point, as well as a junior kid coming on and off means Amy doesn’t have to. “Amy most of the time is the two man and takes a defensive role on one of the main guards and it’s freed her up a little bit.” Knocking down 25-to-16 in the third, Casey was able to build its big buffer and coast home, resting its starters and letting the next wave continue the terrorisation. Tuplin, Jemma Innes (four points, four rebounds) and Jess Szalek (11 points) didn’t take the foot off the throttle to canter home by 22 points. The second placed Cavaliers’ women will aim for five wins in a row when they host Coburg on Saturday night.
“We must be 7-1 and the Blackburn game we look back on that and know where we could’ve been better,” Davies said. “The North East game was a wake-up call for us and we didn’t get out of second gear as well, but going in against Coburg, hopefully we’ve got the intensity and drive. “That will be a physical one that one, so we’ll see how we match up against them.” Casey’s men went 1-1 on the weekend double header - besting Keilor 79-70 on the back of exceptional work from Dean Johnson (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Brent Hobba (18 points). Melton remains the Cavaliers’ bogey side as it lost 81-105 on the road backing up the next day. Hobba (24 points, eight rebounds) led the charge once again alongside Mitch Chapman (15 points). Casey’s youth men had a better time against Melton, knocking over the Thoroughbreds 8371 on the back of Alex Bazzuchini (15 points, nine rebounds) and Sam Pyke (14 points, 10 rebounds). Casey men will host Sunbury on Sunday afternoon following the youth men’s clash with Corio Bay.

Embracing all aspects of community life on and off the sporting fields has earned Lyndhurst Football Netball Club the 2016 Foxtel Community Club of the Year. 152663 Picture: JARROD POTTER
Lyndhurst are happy to meet the Blues - any time By JARROD POTTER LIGHTNING will strike at Ikon Park later this year after Lyndhurst Football Netball Club was awarded a rare football experience with AFL side Carlton. The flourishing Lightning - with teams in South East Juniors boys and girls and senior men’s football competitions as well as netball sides - was recognised for its great achievements on and off the field as the 2016 Foxtel Community Club of the Year. The FOX FOOTY Club Rewards program - run by Foxtel, FOX FOOTY and the AFL Coaches Association - has just announced Lyndhurst as a winner of the Gold Tier prize to send 40 club members to the Carlton Football Club to experience ‘a day in the life of an AFL footballer’. “It’s awesome and really surprising - we’re blown away by it really and haven’t had a lot of time to focus on it really," Lyndhurst FNC president Andrew King said. “It’s been business as usual for us - getting stuff done with the seniors, juniors, Auskick and Youth Girls - but we’re really chuffed
that we were recognised for this honour.” Lyndhurst’s place in the community isn’t just on the sporting fields; the club has been active in the local community - getting right behind and myriad of charities, initiatives and campaigns, including Lace Up, The Fight Against Breast Cancer, The Beehive Foundation and Livvi’s Place. Additionally, the club has been hugely proactive in aligning AFL Indigenous Round with their own home-and-away match, which sees the club connect holistically with elders of their local Boonwurrung tribe. Regularly, various team members volunteer their time at two local schools to teach and mentor primary school children about fun in sport as well. “It is part of our priority, our catch cry ... is our club, our community,” King said. “Not something we rattle off because it sounds good, but that’s why we get involved with all those grassroots causes. “One of our seniors is running from Queensland to Melbourne this year and we’re well and truly behind it as well - part of our DNA and what we do
and part of what we do. “We want to create sporting opportunities for kids in our area and then whatever we can do to help the community beyond that.” It won’t just be the senior boys heading out to that day though as King said the club’s wide variety of players young, old, male and female will be selected for the special occasion. “We’ll have a cross section there with a lot of our kids going out for the experience and our senior coaching staff as well to see the state of the art facilities and see how the elite people go about doing their thing,” King said. The club will also have two members tour the FOX FOOTY studios during live filming of the channel’s prime-time shows and have eight members being invited as VIP guests to the endof-season AFL Coaches Association dinner. Lyndhurst is the second south eastern club to be presented with this prize in 2016, after Pakenham was given a day at St Kilda’s Seaford base earlier this year.
SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - DIVISION 3 PROVING the adage true, Endeavour Hills showed South Yarra on Saturday afternoon that it isn’t over 'til it’s over. With the wind at their back in the final term, the Falcons had to overcome a 21-point deficit and a difficult day on the park against the fourth-ranked Lions. Nothing was going right for the hosts through the first 10 minutes and that would’ve been enough for most sides to chuck the cue in the rack, but the Falcons had one last push left in them. With Endeavour Hills coach Steve Muscat believing the side’s season was on the line, the final attack began in earnest through ... a careless 50-metre penalty from South Yarra. It gave Daniel Strom a difficult set-shot, but the defender delivered - cutting the margin to 14. It went back up the Lions’ end as the visitors booted their last - after a free kick was given in their square - to open a 20-point lead. Mitch Whatman (five goals) was the Falcon who stood up next and stood out the most proving the game-changer late in the clash. He was only up forward for the windward quarters, but in that brief period he delivered. Whatman roosted the second of the term straight through the uprights from the tip of the arc then a reversed free and 50-metre penalty gave Whatman his second of the term to slice the gap once again. Byron Hoe made a crucial intercept mark and booted it to the square where, guess who Whatman - was at the fall of the ball to snap another goal and bring it back to a two-point ball game. But that wasn’t the last of him - the highlights package needed a fourth-and-final Whatman moment as he found himself on the end of a long-bomb from Matthew Peake, snapping

Scott Dinsdale and Jayson Bruce attempt a spoil on a South Yarra opponent. 154248 truly to push the side ahead with a minute or so remaining. South Yarra scrambled in the dying seconds, but it was too late as the Falcons roosted it long again where Nathan Crutchley booted the matchsealer to give Endeavour Hills an amazing come-from-behind 11-point triumph. “We looked like we could’ve kicked another in the end,” Muscat said. “It was just the belief - we had the breeze and we made some changes in the last five minutes - not saying they worked, but we got over the line so we’ll claim it. “It all comes down to persistence and I thought our season was on the line today - and we got the win so we’ll take that into the break.” The coach thought Jake Van Hoesel, Jarryd Burke and Matt Cram stood tall all day as well as
the man of the moment Whatman. Moving up to sixth, Endeavour Hills has a two-week break before its Saturday night showdown with Hallam away on 28 May. Keysborough held off the winless Black Rock to take a 27-point win to push itself up to sixth. Danny Morland (two goals) kept racking up the touches while Jake Dunn, Geoff Humphreys and Matt Downie starred alongside him. Sandown and Hallam’s match was called off in the fourth term after a brawl erupted on the sidelines. Hallam was 80 points ahead when the incident happened and was awarded the win. Doveton Eagles thrashed Dandenong 17.23(125) to 3.5(23), while Lyndale was beaten similarly by Mount Waverley 5.8(38) to 21.10(136).

 Reviews and news…
Looks can be deceptive By EWAN KENNEDY FOR the 2016 season the great looking Range Rover Evoque has received a revised body design that’s now offered in two frontal styles - an all-new Ingenium turbo-diesel engine and full-LED adaptive headlamps in some models. Probably most important to many buyers is the fitment of an updated infotainment system in a revised interior that shares many design cues with the much more expensive Range Rover Sport. What looks like an unrealistically low roof is actually a clever optical illusion. Though the Evoque’s roof does slope sleekly down at the rear the angle is not as sharp as it seems. That’s because the rising belt line creates what looks to be the very low roof. The revised tailgate has wider, slimmer high-level LED brake-lights integrated into the spoiler. The new infotainment system is accessed by way of an eight-inch touchscreen, driver’s information comes from a five-inch full colour screen situated on the central dashboard. Rear-seat entertainment system is an option, it uses a pair of eight-inch video screens and wireless digital headphones. The Evoque has a new EU6-compliant four-cylinder turbo-diesel en-
Styling makeover works well on the sleek Range Rover Evoque.
gine that has up to 132 kW of power and 430 Nm of torque. It features variable valve timing and low friction technologies. Selective catalytic reduction and a new low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system significantly reduce NOx emissions. Mated with the nine-speed automatic transmission that always seems to be in the right gear this new engine works beautifully. In addition to the active and passive safety features found in almost all ve-
hicles these days, Range Rover Evoque has driver Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, Forward Alert and Intelligent Emergency Braking; Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection, to warn drivers of other road users. We found the front seats of the Evoque comfortable and reasonably spacious, particularly for a vehicle of this size. In four-door format there’s sufficient headroom for a six-footer in the back seats, though that’s probably
about the limit. Legroom in the rear is good if tall people in front are willing to give up a few centimetres of their legroom. The view to the side from the back seats suffers because of the aforementioned rising belt line and smaller children may struggle to see outside. Likewise, visibility to the rear is not good as the shallow back windscreen gives a letter-box effect. A reversing camera and parking sensors make life safer. On sealed surfaces the Range Rover Evoque handles almost as well as a hatchback and the Evoque feels like the upmarket vehicle that it is on Aus-
sie backroads. Boot space is good and we had no trouble fitting in a couple of large suitcases without having to fold down the rear seatbacks. The design and quality of in-cabin materials has always been impressive and seems to have lifted further with this latest model. The all-new turbo-diesel engine has excellent performance without too much turbo lag. Once on song the torque just keeps on coming and the Evoque makes light work of hills and spends a minimum amount of time on the wrong side of the road whilst overtaking. Range Rover’s new Ingenium powerplant is much quieter on the outside and inside it’s virtually indistinguishable from the petrol engine in the way sounds are suppressed. Fuel consumption around town was impressively low at seven to nine litres per 100 kilometres and with care it’s possible to get consumption under five litres per 100 on the highway. That’s amazing for a vehicle in this class. More than 400,000 Range Rover Evoques have been sold since its introduction in 2011 and many still regard it as the best of all the premium SUVs. This midlife upgrade adds distinctive new styling, an excellent new turbo-diesel engine and up to the minute technologies.

LEXUS cut its SUV teeth on the RX line with the RX 300, launched in Japan and the US in 1998, however it wasn’t sold here. The second-generation luxury sport RX 330 V6 was released in Australia in 2003 with immediate success, becoming Australia's most popular luxury SUV. The RX went on to be Lexus' most successful model globally. Now the fourth generation introduces itself with the RX 200t at $73,000, plus on-road costs, the RX 350 Luxury comes in at $88,583 on road, the RX 350 F Sport at $101,000, the RX 350 Sports Luxury $107,200, while the range is topped off with the RX 450h F Sport hybrid at $100,000 and RX 450h Sports Luxury, $106,000. Several Enhancement Packs that can be added to the lowerrange models. The test vehicle was the RX Line flagship, the RX 350 Sports Luxury, priced at $107,200 on road. There is no mistaking a Lexus RX 350 from the front, with its even deeper-set radiator grille. A new headlamp design follows suit, with daytime running lights adding more substance to the SUV’s bold street presence. Sports Luxury models feature wheels with coloured inserts and sequential LED front and rear indicators. It goes without saying that the RX 350 Sports Luxury passenger cabin combines high levels of build quality with superior ergonomics, with Lexus' concept of Human Machine Interface separating the control and display zones to offer the driver fewer distractions. Almost 30,000 RX units have been sold since it was introduced to Australia, putting it at the leading edge of Lexus’ sales here, accounting for between 30 and 40 per cent. With any business purchase, we know how important peace of mind and total cost of ownership are. That’s why the Renault Commercial range comes with a 3-year/200,000km Warranty,† 3 year 24/7 Roadside Assistance† and Capped Price Servicing for the first 3 scheduled maintenance services.^ BARRY BOURKE RENAULT 755 Princes Hwy, Berwick / Ph: (03) 9707 2222 barrybourkerenault.com.au 1228355-20-16
*Drive away price for the Kangoo SWB petrol manual, Trafic SWB Single Turbo Manual, Master SWB Manual all with non-metallic paint. Valid for vehicles ordered between 1/4/2016 & 30/6/2016 while stocks last. Renault reserves the right to vary, extend or withdraw this ofer. Ofer available to ABN holders only, and excludes Government and fleet buyers. ^First 3 scheduled maintenance services capped at $349 per service on new and demonstrator Kangoo, Trafic and Master models, based on standard scheduled servicing from new and on normal operating conditions. Scheduled maintenance services required every twelve (12) months or 15,000km (whichever occurs first) on Kangoo and every twelve (12) months or up to 30,000km (whichever occurs first) on Trafic and Master. However, Master is subject to adaptive servicing requirements, as determined by the Oil Condition Sensor, and may require servicing prior to the standard twelve (12) months or 30,000km service interval. If vehicle is not presented within three (3) months of when the scheduled service is required, right to that capped-price service under the program is forfeited. †Three (3) year/200,000km warranty ofer and 3 year/200,000km Roadside Assistance both apply to all new or demonstrator Kangoo, Trafic and Master models. Warranty and Roadside Assistance valid for 3 years or 200,000km (whichever comes first) from new. Demonstrator vehicles receive balance of new vehicle warranty and Roadside Assistance.
