‘Bureaucracy’ kills Chinese flight plan

Avalon’s take-off ‘stalled’ standing with Hong Kong airline Hainan, he said. The MOU with Hainan in 2011 raised hopes of Avalon going international, with a Federal Government commitment to providing customs and quarantine services. HNA Group’s Hainan Airlines is China’s fourth largest airline, with nearly 500 aircraft covering more than 570 domestic and international routes. Mr Giddings said Avalon would be “released if it was reclassified as a regional airport. He said the classification was “bureaucratic decision based on the premise that Avalon served Melbourne. “It’s not the golden ticket but it is one of those frustrations that would help if it was removed, Mr Giddings told the Geelong Indy. “Even if it was for a temporary period or for a maximum number of airlines it would help get things started. “Most people would consider Avalon as more of a regional airport than Cairns, Adelaide and Gold Coast. By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A Federal Government classification of Avalon Airport as a major international gateway is restricting its chances of attracting an international airline. Avalon is classified at the same level as Melbourne Airport, meaning airlines have restricted capacity compared to regional airfields. Airports such as Adelaide, Gold Coast, Cairns and Darwin are all classified as regional gateways. The Federal Government offers incentives to international airlines through the Regional Air Access Package. Avalon chief Justin Giddings told a Geelong Chamber of Commerce briefing for shadow treasurer Chris Bowen that this was the reason an agreement with a Chinese carrier collapsed. Mr Giddings said because Avalon faced capacity restrictions because it was classified as a major international gateway. “Avalon Airport is being held back by bilateral agreements. Ex-Indy delivery boy ‘set for $100m apps fortune’

In Brief Mosque blaze Victoria Police is investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a Manifold Heights mosque early on Wednesday morning, the fifth church fire in the region in the past eight months. Housed in a former church, the mosque was well alight by the time fire crews arrived, taking an hour to contain it. Imam Mohammad Ramzan and his family, including several children, escaped unharmed.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN He has come a long way from the days when he delivered the Geelong Indy but it wasn’t all that long ago for Appster co-founder Mark McDonald. Mr McDonald laughed as he recounted his days as a paperboy while speaking with Geelong Indy this week. “I used to deliver a couple of hundred papers a week. I took on another round and at my peak I was doing 300 to 500 papers a week,” he said. “My little brother is doing the paper run now.” In just five years Appster became one of the fastest growing app development companies in the world. The company is on track to post almost $100 million in revenue by 2018 with plans to eventually launch an initial public offering. A proud Geelong native, Mr McDonald and his co-founder Josiah Humphrey started Appster in 2011 with only $3000 of their own money. “We started it when we were 18 and 19,” Mr McDonald recalls. “I used to be youngest staff member in the company but now there are some younger than me.” But Mr McDonald said he never saw the age difference as a barrier. Rather it emphasised to him how important it was to get the best talent he could. “You have to find a way to attract A-grade players and that ensure the right people are on bus and the wrong people get off the bus. “We have had captains of industry working with us. Our finance officer worked for a half a billion dollar a year business before joining Appster,” he said. “The key is that you have to give people the space to do what they do best. “You have to have enough self-confidence to understand balancing act between different cultures and different countries.” The five years of aggressive growth has seen Appster with almost 400 staff in three countries - Australia, USA and India - without any outside investment. Last year, the pair debuted on BRW’s Young Rich List and were finalists in Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award, winning the Southern Region category.

Trawler rally Geelong will participate in a national day of action against the Geelong-based super trawler Geelong Star by the Stop the Trawler Alliance. Recreational fishers, environmentalists, tourism and coastal business owners have been asked to rally against the trawler on 19 May at the office of Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson as well as in Bega, Hobart and Adelaide.

Geelong’s MCG Geelong Cats trained at Deakin University’s state-of-the-art Elite Sports Precinct for the first time this week in preparation for its game against Collingwood. The $8.4 million facility at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus features an MCG-sized oval built to specifically support the club’s training needs.

Trust GPAC Geelong Performing Arts Centre Trust has announced the addition of two new members, Kirsten Kilpatrick and Cate Steains, taking the number of women on the Trust to six out of 11. Ms Kilpatrick is Principal Town Planner with Geelong’s Tract Consultants while Ms Steains works for the United Nations as a senior international human rights lawyer.

Wheel deal Innovative Geelong manufacturer Carbon Revolution has scored another coup, this time inking a deal placing its wheels on the most expensive Ford supercar ever made. The contact, expected to be worth multimillions of dollars, will see the latest Carbon Revolution wheels on the Ford GT, selling for around $500,000. However the car won’t be sold in Australia.

Avalon’s take-off stalled as restrictions hit flight plans From page 1 “Yet they have Hong Kong airlines flying in there because they can have capacity but Avalon can’t.” Mr Giddings said the government would have to decide if the new Toowoomba airport known as Brisbane West would be classified as regional or not. “If Toowoomba is going to be regional then we should be as well,” he said. Both Geelong Chamber of Commerce and

G21 have lobbied the Federal Government to reclassify Avalon to make it eligible for benefits associated under the Regional Airport Package. The priority project includes standardising border agency and Airservices Australia’s charges for Avalon equal to the rates charged at Tullamarine. “The Federal Government and Airservices Australia should work to ensure Avalon Airport is provided with a fair platform to compete for domestic services,” the project description said.

“This includes ensuring pricing for services such as air traffic control, firefighting services and policing does not adversely impact Avalon Airport. “The Federal Government can also assist Avalon Airport’s international endeavours by providing appropriate border agency services priced so as not to disadvantage Avalon Airport against its competitors. “Under current practice some costs would be charged to Avalon Airport or its airlines where this does not occur at Tullamarine Airport.”

Cotton On sued Geelong-based global clothing retailer Cotton On has been accused of stealing designs from award-winning US-based artist Elektra Printz Gorski. Gorski claims she developed designs including the slogan LETTUCE TURNIP THE BEET in 2011, which later appeared on Cotton On T-shirts without her permission.

Feds target funding for youth arts By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s Courthouse Youth Arts (CHYA) has lost its federal funding, leaving the organisation reeling. CHYA was one of 10 youth performing arts companies across Australia to have been hit by Federal Government funding cuts. The cuts by the Australia Council for the Arts have sent shockwaves through the arts sector. Only three organisations were given funding. The cuts hit a wide variety of visual arts, dance and theatre organisations on Friday 13 May, which is now being called Black Friday around the arts sector.

CHYA applied for 2016 project funding in the September grant round. The cuts followed the cancellation of funding rounds earlier in the year, with chaos in arts funding caused by the now-cancelled National Program for Excellence in the Arts. The September round was highly competitive - of almost 1700 applications submitted, only 290 were successful. Leading arts industry site ArtsHub said companies were previously supported through the Australia Council Theatre Board’s Youth Program Fund. But a 2015 restructure saw the Youth Program Fund merged with the wider pool of theatre fund-

ing, requiring youth arts companies to compete with the entire theatre sector. ArtsHub said the loss of $73 million of Australia Council funding to support the Ministry for the Arts’ new Catalyst fund reduced the overall amount of funding available. A spokesperson for Courthouse Youth Arts said the organisation was supported by both local and state government and would continue to apply for funding from a range of sources. “Courthouse Youth Arts will continue to offer a quality program,” the spokesperson said. “We acknowledge disappointment that many arts organisations are facing difficult times.” Corio MP Richard Marles said he was con-

Floral celebrations for pelargonium club anniversary By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A Geelong club dedicated to one of the most popular garden plants in the world reaches its 50th anniversary on 26 May. But Geelong Pelargonium Club’s devoted members fear their group won’t see another significant milestone. Publicity officer Laurie Cocking said members were not as youthful as they used to be and attracting younger people to the pastime was difficult. “Sadly, gardening knowledge is being lost because younger people aren’t interested,” he said. “We have several life-members but there’s no chance the club will survive another 50 years.” Despite the bleak outlook, members are looking forward to celebrating the milestone at their clubrooms near Geelong Botanic Gardens’ pelargonium house. The rounded shelter holds more than 200 varieties of the species, with variegated leaves and differently coloured and shaped petals. For details call Laurie on 0408 529 845 or email lauriehydro@hotmail.com

Park lease veto The award-winning operators of Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park have lost their bid to renew their lease, with Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee taking over from December 2017. The Morris family had run the facility for the past 20 years and claimed its multimillion dollar investment proposal for the park had been “snubbed” by GORCC. “To say I am disappointed would be the understatement of the year,” manager Errol Morris said. “What I am most disappointed about is not being able to realise my family’s dream of making our park the best in Victoria.” GORCC chief executive officer Richard Davies said the tender process did not find an acceptable proposal for the value of the site. He said the committee was committed to maintaining the site at current standards and that no current guests, campers and permit holders would be disadvantaged.

cerned about the cuts to what was a “great program”. “This will hit the Courthouse Youth Arts program very hard,” Mr Marles said. “Young people who gain so much though this program are being denied that opportunity by virtue of these cuts. “This is a direct result of the arts cuts by the Turnbull government in successive years to Australia Council funding and means there is less money in the system. “Labor would increase arts funding if we are elected.” Liberal candidate Richard Lange was unable to reply to Geelong Indy prior to deadline.

But the changes are happening behind the scenes too, with the troubled discount chain, part of the Wesfarmers stable, moving its media buying agency. Target is following sister brand Coles in shifting its media spend to a new agency after 13 years. It probably means other Wesfarmers brands including K-Mart and Bunnings Warehouse will also make the move. Head of the losing agency, IPG Mediabrands, Danny Bass said the news had made it a tough week for the business. Geelong knows how he feels.

Cats stars take to the field to help TAC reduce regional road dangers Star Cats Patrick Dangerfield and Andrew Mackie are all about racking up the numbers on the field but they want to see zero statistics on the road. They have been enlisted by the Transport Accident Commission as part of the Towards Zero push to stop deaths and injuries on Victorian roads. The pair will appear in a series of online videos called Stand Together Towards Zero, encouraging footy fans to do their bit for road safety. TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore praised Dangerfield and Mackie’s involvement with the campaign which is part of the TAC’s partnership with the Geelong Football Club. “These are some of the biggest names in the game and it’s great to see them using their profiles to help spread this important message among Cats fans,” Mr Calafiore said. The star duo shot their videos this month and they will begin appearing online on Friday.

They will also be shown on the big screen at Cats games, starting with the club’s round nine clash with Collinwood on Sunday. Dangerfield said he was thrilled to throw his support behind Towards Zero. “I’m really excited that being at Geelong means I can support the TAC and Victoria’s Towards Zero campaign,” Dangerfield said. “We’ve all got family and friends and no one deserves to lose them because of a mistake made on the roads so it’s a really great cause that I’m proud to put my name to.” Mackie said his involvement with the TAC over the past four years had taught him that responsibility for stopping people getting killed or hurt on the roads was shared by all Victorians. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling tickets at the gate or lining up at half back, we all need to do our bit to be safe every time we turn our keys or go to walk across the street,” Mackie said.

Working life helps confidence grow By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A lack of confidence kept Aliesha Vicars moored to the couch of her parents’ Corio home after leaving school. “I had no motivation to do anything because I had no idea what I wanted to do,” Aliesha said. Aliesha had never worked since she completed her VCE in 2012. “I had been on the couch for two years. I had no confidence, that was the main reason, but I didn’t like being at home.” Being unemployed wasn’t the only negative in her life; watching her parent’s relationship break down put further pressure on her. Little did she imagine that a referral to Northern Futures at the beginning of 2014 by her job service provider Matchworks would prove life-changing. “I was accepted into a Certificate II in Business Basics at the Gordon and once I committed to study my confidence grew. “It meant that my days spent on the couch were

a thing of the past. From that I got a traineeship with Glastonbury Community Services in Business Administration and it was a dream come true.” The dream continued for Aliesha when she was awarded Trainee of the Year for her efforts. But others challenges remain to come. During her traineeship Glastonbury merged with two other organisations to become Barwon Child Youth and Family. Aliesha said the change made her unsure of her future again, but this time she responded differently. “I decided to take as much control of my future as possible so I set goals including gaining full-time employment and a career.” Aliesha achieved her goal when her employer offered her full-time work at the completion of her traineeship. Aliesha said she had now developed a passion for study, pursuing an interest in photography while working full-time with Barwon Child Youth and Family.

LIFE SAVER: The heroin antidote saving Geelong lives.

Jab training is a heroin lifesaver By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

OFF THE COUCH: Aliesha Vicars has gained full-time work.

A program training drug users, family and friends to use an overdose antidote has prevent at least 12 deaths in Geelong. Alcohol and other drugs worker Craig Harvey said the injection device, similar to an EpiPen auto injector for anaphylaxis, was saving lives. Geelong was leading Victoria in prescribing Naloxone and training people in its use through Barwon Health’s drug and alcohol service, Mr Havey said. “It’s only $6 for five syringes and it’s saving lives. “I know of 12 reversals that have been reported directly to me but there will be others - there are certainly more than we are aware of.” Mr Harvey said Barwon Health was an early

adopter of the program and he had since trained 120 people in the use of Naloxone. The Indy reported two weeks ago that Geelong had the highest frequency of drug overdose deaths in regional Victoria. The Coroner’s Prevention Unit report revealed a concerning rise in heroin overdoses across the state, including Geelong. Mr Harvey said Naloxone had been used in medical settings and by emergency services for a long time but was now available over the counter. He said 70 per cent of overdoses occurred in presence of someone else. “Addicts don’t use alone and people using drugs look after each other. It’s a resource not tapped into near enough,” he said.

WANTED: Images from the alleged servo drive-offs in Geelong.

Servos pay price for petrol thefts By LUKE VOOGT

1224472-EG15-16

Drive-offs continue costing Geelong service stations hundreds of dollars a week despite petrol prices up to a third lower than 12 months ago. Apco Newcomb franchisee Jason Crawford said his latest drive-off was just 20 minutes before the Indy phoned him this week for a comment about recent petrol thefts across Geelong. “It’s costing us $200 a week and I know we’re not the worst-hit store in our network.” Mr Crawford said his servo had a “steady flow” of petrol thefts, which was slightly less during cheaper parts of the fuel-price cycle. “It tends to go quiet for a bit but it still doesn’t stop them.” Mr Crawford suggested demerit points or fines as additional penalties for discouraging thefts. The alternative was switching to pre-payment, like in some other countries, he said. “It’s frustrating – I report them all but there doesn’t seem to be anything happening.

“I know I’m not going to see that money again.” Geelong police recently posted security camera images of two drive-offs with requests for help to track down the alleged thieves. One of the suspects allegedly stole unleaded petrol from Lara service station at 4.30am on 13 May, one of the posts said. The images showed him beside a Red VY Commodore sedan with black mag wheels and number plates stolen from Lara. The man appeared to have an injured left foot, a “severe limp” and was wearing a blue moonboot and a black shirt with skull motif, police posted. The second post alleged that a man stole petrol from a service station on Queenscliff Road, Newcome, at 10.45pm on 11 May. The man was also wanted for stealing number plates at Grovedale, police posted. Police asked for anyone with information about either incident to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

see hope Sport loss concerns peak Groups in joint approach By JUSTIN FLYNN Concern for the future of Corio’s Flinders Peak reserve is growing. Geelong’s council initially gave a green light for an upgrade of the facility with two rectangular sporting fields and refurbishment of a disused former secondary school hall on the site. Funding was allocated for the project but the precinct’s future is now under a cloud since the State Government sacked the council in April, according to former councillor Tony Ansett. He believed that the Department of Health had now offered to purchase the land from City Hall. Mr Ansett, whose former Windemere Ward covered the site, said he fought to retain the reserve as an open space while he was in office but was concerned it could end up as residential allotments. “The primary school has been bulldozed, the secondary school has been bulldozed and Scout hall closed and you can see that area has lost its infrastructure, he said. “It’s something that part of Corio really needs. If we lost it now we’d have houses running into that space. Geelong’s Rams rugby union club and Buccaneers gridiron team hoped to use the reserve if the upgrade goes ahead. Life. Be In It has also expressed a desire to utilise the former secondary school hall, which would be refurbished under a proposal that council put forward before was it sacked. Buccaneers president Chris Reynon said his club was desperate to relocate to Flinders Peak to strengthen its growing stature in the community. “We're aiming to become more of a sports club than just an American football club, he said. “We have 50 netball members who play in three junior and one senior team. One of our main concerns is that there has been a budget al-

It’s been allocated so let’s do something about it. Mr Ansett hoped the huge reserve could accommodate both housing and the sporting precinct but was concerned about a lack of funding

for community infrastructure in Geelong's northern suburbs. “Why should the north get a constant bashing? he said. “Now I’m no longer on council I’m hearing whispers we might lose it.

Another community agency merger has been announced with Minerva Community Services and Barwon CASA intending to join forces. The two specialist family violence services said they wanted to create a “strong and robust platform to prevent and respond to the high levels of sexual assault and family violence in the community. It’s another move in the consolidation of Geelong human services agencies following a merger announcement by Bethany Community Support and Geelong Kindergarten Association last week. Karingal and St Laurence Community Services have also agreed to merge after Karingal had already merged with CREATE in 2011 and with DoCare Geelong in 2015. Barwon Child, Youth and Family was created out of a merger between Barwon Youth, Glastonbury Community Services and Time for Youth last year. Head of the new entity Helen Bolton said the merger was timely. “Women and children experiencing family violence will receive a comprehensive service that can respond to their immediate safety needs, she said. “The new service is able to address the effects of the trauma they have experienced and support them towards recovery. “In bringing our two organisations together, we are creating a single entry point and highly efficient model to meet the needs of people experiencing sexual assault and family violence. Minerva board chair Renee Fiolet said the move would revolutionise the way the service worked. “Our intention to merge is a first step on the way to seeing real change to the way services are delivered. It will make it much easier for women and children to have a co-ordinated response. Barwon CASA Board chair Dr Kate Fitz-Gibbon said bringing the merger combined expertise, specialist knowledge and skills. “That will help to streamline and eliminate any confusion currently experienced by victims of family and sexual violence and service providers who refer into our services.

Talent is caring Torquay furniture-maker Luke Collins and Geelong artist Tanya Keenan have combined their talents to raise money for Wye River bushfire victims. The two created a stylish piece of artistic furniture inspired by the Surf Coast which is for auction on the Created With Care website. Luke and Tanya wanted their Wye River Buffet to reflect the natural environment they both love. “We have such a beautiful, serene coastline,” Tanya said. Tanya described herself as a self-taught artist and mother of three who loved to experiment with different textures to create “landscapes of her mind”. But this was her first time working with furniture. “It was a bit nerve-wracking,” she said. “The wood I was painting on was very expensive, so if I had made a mistake it would have

been a disaster.” Luke made the buffet from donated wood as a canvas and frame for Tanya’s painting. He hoped the piece would be timeless. “We want all of our pieces to be handed down to the next generation not into hard rubbish.” The money raised will go to the Spirit Foundation which is assisting Wye River and Separation Creek residents after bushfires devastated their towns in December. Foundation co-director Peter Spring said the campaign included financial support to individuals and infrastructure projects, including first-aid facilities at the local surf lifesaving club. Bids for the buffet had reached $1300 by 17 May. Bids remain open at createdwithcare.com. au until 5pm on 10 June.

Axe to fall on city’s elms Decay hollowing out historic trees Towering elms at the waterfront end of Geelong’s Moorabool Street face the chop, City Hall has revealed. One of the five trees, between the waterfront and Brougham Street, would fall this Friday due to its “poor condition and a high risk to public safety”. The remaining four had a “life expectancy of less than 10 years” said city services general manager Will Tieppo. The first tree had deteriorated so much that it was “now completely hollow”, he said. “We have these trees tested regularly using a sonic tomograph that measures the decay and remaining sound wood so that we can make informed decisions and minimise the risk to the community. “Unfortunately this tree has now reached the point where it is unsafe to leave standing.” Mr Tieppo said the other trees, all about 50 years old, had similar issues. “These trees will be retained at this time and we monitor them and continue testing. “We will keep them as long as we feel they are safe. Our arborists estimate that these old elms have a life expectancy of less than 10 years.” Mr Tieppo said previous pruning practices causes the trees to decay. “Decay is a normal process in the life of a tree. However, if the trees are pruned incorrectly it can increase the likelihood of decay and the rate in which it can spread through the tree. “The arboricultural industry has discovered in the past 20 years that cutting branches flush with the trunk allows pathogens into the tree that cause wood decay. “These practices have now been improved.” The tree to be cut down would be replaced with the same species of elm, Mr Tieppo said.

TALL TIMBER: City Hall’s Greg Schoonderbeek and Chris Beynon inspect the first tree to fall.

Sport conference to host hundreds Hundreds of sport enthusiasts are set to attend a conference in Geelong next week. Geelong Sport Development Conference co-ordinator Sue Cormack said 200 administrators, coaches and club volunteers attended the inaugural event last year. This year’s conference, titled Local Clubs: From Good to Great, would including a trade expo at Geelong Arena on 29 May, Ms Cormack said. “In such a competitive environment all sporting clubs are looking for a competitive advantage. “Geelong Cats have shown the importance of a great culture and developing their staff in order to maximise the abilities of their athletes. “The Geelong Sport Development Conference and Trade Expo will help clubs that are looking to shift from good to great.” An initiative of Leisure Networks and Barwon Sports Academy, the conference brings together experts in club administration and sport performance with the aim of helping develop local clubs and coaches. “We already have club personnel booked in from a range of sporting codes from far and wide including Melton, Bendigo and Ballarat,” Ms Cormack said. Barwon Sports Academy’s Cameron Loftus said the conference had a high profile line-up of speakers including Cats physical performance manager Kris Hinck and Leading Teams’ Ray McLean. “Some of the simplest ideas and approaches by clubs can make all the difference and Kris has plenty of good oil to share through 15 years of working in elite and professional sport,” Mr Loftus said. Expert panels comprising administrators and sport professionals would share ideas and resources to encourage club success, he said.

When it comes to helping the elderly, Geelong’s Sylvia County goes the extra mile - whether by foot or bus. Sylvia doesn’t drive but that hasn’t stopped her giving back to the Geelong community for 33 years. “I just love doing it,” she said. Sylvia has volunteered with aged-case services provider DoCare Geelong since 1983, visiting older people at risk of social isolation. “It’s a nice feeling to give back and the people you visit are all so lovely and grateful,” she said. “Someday, I might need help too - you never know never know what’s going to happen to you down the track.” Karingal, a not-for-profit community services agency, has more than 200 volunteers who help

older people. Together they contribute about 30,000 hours a year. Karingal DoCare social support manager Siarhra Atkins said the benefits of volunteering were invaluable. “You choose how much time you are willing to volunteer,” she said. “We’ve found that just a few hours a week can make a difference.” Karingal acknlowledged the contributions of Sylvia and its other volunteers during Naitonal Volunteer Week from 9 to 15 May. Karingal DoCare seeks more volunteers to assist older people, particularly in northern Geelong and on the Bellarine Peninsula. More information was available by phoning DoCare on 5298 1053.

‘Top kid virus’ in Geelong studies “Ground-breaking” Geelong research could beat a cold-like virus ranked the number-one cause of young children ending up in hospital, according to Barwon Health. The research involved two studies to prevent and treat respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), commonly behind winter outbreaks of lung infection bronchiolitis, Barwon Health said. Young children and premature babies were at most risk of RSV, with “no specific treatment” as yet available. The first study would test the preventative capabilities of a drug administered twice to premature babies less than six months old, Barwon Health said. The second would treat infected children aged under two with seven doses of a trial drug. Barwon Health’s opportunity to contribute to a treatment for RSV was “exciting”, study leader Dr

Dave Fuller said “The study is only in early stages, so there’s a chance we can contribute to finding an effective treatment for the virus,” he said. “Now we’re coming into winter we’re starting to see a lot of cases of RSV here at Barwon Health. “RSV can present as a cold in adults but can make young babies very unwell. The younger the patient is, the more at risk they are. “Currently we have no treatment that can affect the course of the illness, so to be leading two trials for treatment and prevention is pleasing.” Barwon Health wants to recruit 10 premature babies for one trial and two children aged under two with RSV infection for the other, both before the virus season ends. Barwon Health said recruitment for the studies was available by phoning Katherine Jess on 4215 1116.

A rainbow flag is flying over Geelong’s City Hall for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHoBIT). A crowd of about 100 attended the flag-raising on Tuesday 17 May in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. “The City of Greater Geelong continues to support LGBTI people and to celebrate diversity within our community,” said the City’s community life general manager Linda Quinn. “It was fantastic to see people from all walks of life celebrating IDAHoBIT and importantly coming together to display a strong message of tolerance and acceptance of others.” City Hall has now flown the rainbow flag three times as part of council’s GASP program, which has supported young LGBTI people for more than 18 years. Ms Quinn stressed the importance of acknowledging that many LGBTI people still experienced discrimination and harassment which could have “lasting effects on their mental health”.

Geelong short-changed again Labor’s pledge of $7.5 million to assist Geelong’s automotive industry is a panicked response destined to fail. Bill Shorten and Premier Daniel Andrews announced the Manufacturing Transition Boost on Monday, expanding the Local Industry Fund for Transition that supports workers, communities and businesses affected by the closure of largescale passenger manufacturing. But Geelong’s $7.5 million pledge only shortchanged the industry. The same program earmarked northern Melbourne for $10.6 million and south-east Melbourne for $10 million. The Andrews Government’s last-minute plan and typical city-centric attitude failed Geelong again. The joint pledge with Mr Shorten was just not enough investment for this city given the hardships and expected economic fallout from Ford’s 510 job losses this year. As one of Victoria’s most economically vulnerable regions, Geelong needs significant investment to bounce back. Unfortunately, we can’t act surprised to see manufacturing regions in Melbourne promised up to $3 million more than Geelong because the Premier just doesn’t care enough about regional Victoria to understand the incredible impact from Ford’s closure in October. While Mr Andrews and Mr Shorten act like the saviours of the blue-collar worker their pledge feigns in comparison to the coalition’s Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund, which has already given businesses $11.2 million of grants to create jobs and boost investment across the region. Mr Andrews loves talking about jobs but where is the action to truly deliver on what he has promised? Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

I write to address recent commentary that the Towards Zero Action Plan 2016-2020 means drastic speed limit changes on country roads. A key part of the strategy is fixing high speed rural roads, where 44 per cent of deaths and 20 per cent of serious injuries happen. We cannot accept this as our price for getting around. As humans, we do make mistakes from time to time but the Towards Zero approach will create an environment where drivers and riders’ mistakes aren’t fatal. On country roads, this means looking at innovative, comprehensive solutions to build the safest roads possible. It also means driving the safest cars we can afford and taking on our shared responsibility to be safe road users. Contrary to what some have said in recent days, sweeping speed limit changes are not planned. Infrastructure changes are the priority, and speed limit changes would only be considered where there is a strong evidence base to support doing so, including crash histories and other local factors. More information about the Towards Zero Action Plan can be found at towardszero.vic.gov.au. Joe Calafiore Transport Accident Commission chief executive officer

Authorities passing buck on crime in Geelong The problem I have with Geelong police boss Graeme Banks’s recent opinion on crime is that Victoria Police, along with State Government and City of Greater Geelong, has a mandate for “peace, order and good government”, according to our constitution. A few nights ago I needed some police assistance. The two police who attended told me they were the only unit on patrol that night, which was extraordinary given the number of incidents reported recently. Police press releases, and the retiring policeman recently featured in local papers (Geelong Indy, 6 May), have referred to Geelong as a “war zone” yet the troops have not been put out in force to deal with the supposed war. Every time I walk past Geelong Police Station I see at least a dozen cars parked yet only one unit was patrolling a few nights ago. Residents around Craddock Street, Geelong West, are patrolling their own streets when it is rightfully the job of the police. Mr Banks’s opinion merely served to shift the onus onto the public to police their own streets when

Stop war, vote Green Climate change is at the root of most current major global conflicts, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. Long-term drought fuels war over ever scarcer resources and has the consequence of causing unprecedented human migration. The Liberal and National parties’ responses to climate change have been utterly woeful. Labor’s response, while better, is still hamstrung by the party’s support of the fossil-fuel industry. Australians are crying out for bold action. We want a planet worth living on for ourselves and our children. Our vote does count and doesn’t have to be for parties that say they govern for the people but are really in the pockets of wealthy corporations. The Greens' policies and those of other independents show a better way forward for the future. Leigh Adamson Belmont

On Express to new world I was recently asked to explain how issues emerg-

ing for the transition of the La Trobe Valley from coal to new industry, including the renewables sector, might be relevant to Geelong. A heartfelt and direct Latrobe Express editorial recently stated: “Our power stations will close and while it may not be as soon as some continue to lobby for, either way, it’s just around the corner". Opinions on energy might depend on whether we see our local economy and jobs future as connected to the bigger picture outside this region. Fossil fuels are losing money for investors and as manufacturers exit from Geelong we are still dependent on brown coal-powered electricity for commercial, council and household use. We are in a strong position to participate in advanced technologies including renewable energy and energy-efficiency building products. We have no time to waste. I look forward to positive contributions that translate into real action plans for how we transition Geelong to a bright and low energy lit future. Vicky Grosser Manifold Heights

Mentors for your musical health Writing a song is usually considered an individual experience and collaborations are often difficult to orchestrate. Add in musicians also experiencing mental health problems and the challenge to produce a collective song writing effort is magnified. But it’s that challenge that Athena’s Guild, a mentoring collective of musicians, has taken on. A bunch of musos experiencing mental health issues joined with professional musicians and song writers to give it their best shot. The songs will be given their public debut at Open House, a show featuring local undiscovered songwriters, established artists including Rach Brennan and Jack Robbins, as well as local legends such as Tim Neal. Over the course of three months, experienced professional musicians and songwriters were paired with musos experiencing mental health issues in a series of one-on-one mentoring sessions. They also came together for group workshops facilitated by Bellarine Peninsula musician Sarah Carroll. Behind the project is Bluebird Foundation, a Geelong based not-for-profit dedicated to making quality arts programs accessible for all and the Rotary Club of Geelong East. “Two years ago we worked together on the very first Athena’s Guild project which focused on the visual arts,” Bluebird Foundation’s Bron Lawson said. “This year we’re delighted to be working with some amazing musicians who have been telling their stories through song. “Each pair has worked quite differently, following the passions, talents and strengths of the musicians and the results are everything from beautiful and thought-provoking to dark, quirky. “But it hasn’t been a one-way street. The relationships that have developed within the mentoring pairs have challenged and stretched the

Flying a big Kite

& GREAT ENTERTAINMENT AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED

Geelong funk outfit The Kite Machine is flying with a new single and gigs in Melbourne, Sydney and their hometown lined up. The tight-as-a-drum three piece group have been working hard on their sound and its shows in the new release Charlotte. “Our philosophy is that it’s worth putting in the time and effort into it to make sure we get the quality we want,” guitarist Levi Anderson observed. And the approach seems to be working, with the band receiving radio airplay, including hitting number one on Triple J Unearthed, rave reviews and lots of social media hits. “We’ve got a great fan base in Geelong, which is fantastic. When we wanted to film our live DVD we got such a good crowd,” Anderson said. The lens captures their infectious energy as the band performs its electric live show to a packed

house at The Studio in Geelong. “But now we want to push it out. Our goal this year is to develop a Melbourne fan base,” Greenwood said. The Kite Machine is destined to be Geelong’s next exciting music export, taking its funky but loud and ballistic shows on the road. “We take pride in being a great live band. When we write our songs we are writing for our live shows,” Levi said. The band has been though some evolutions but has settled as a three-piece with drummer Kane Sherriff and bassist Liam Brennan. The additions enable The Kite Machine to soar with vocals over a tight groove and manic riffs as the band’s signature sound. The Kite Machine embarks on a national tour to celebrate the release of new single Charlotte, playing Geelong’s Workers Club on 17 June.

Geelong VS

STILL KING: Aussie rock veteran Normie Rowe.

Trooper Rowe in concert at Corio Sadly, keyboardist Phil Blackmore passed away in the ’70s. Steve Kelson is the new boy in more ways than one, being only 25 years old. Australia went through its own version of the Elvis Presley army induction when Rowe received his call-up in the early ’70s and was sent to Vietnam, becoming Australia’s most recognisable soldier. Since then he has worked tirelessly to improve conditions for veterans of all wars. Rowe went international after the war with shows in the US, UK, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Greece, Turkey and New Zealand. He has been involved in shows like Legends of Oz Rock and Long Way to the Top and as an actor in productions such as Les Miserables. Geelong has two opportunities to catch Rowe and his band. He plays a dinner show at Geelong RSL on 18 June with tickets between $25 and $50 followed by a lunchtime show at the Gateway Hotel on 29 July with tickets from $40.

He was once the most popular performer in Australia and has evolved to become one of the nation’s most enduring acts. Normie Rowe and the Playboys were by no small measure the most successful pop act in the 1960s. Finding their way from the town hall dances of the northern suburbs of Melbourne to Channel O’s GO!! Show, they proceeded to produce a string of hit singles. The soundtrack includes It Ain’t Necessarily So, I Who Have Nothing, Que Sera Sera and Shakin’ All Over, with half a dozen others that leap to mind instantly as the song begins. In that era, there was no singer with a bigger following than Rowe - number-one Hits, King of Pop awards and mass hysteria at every performance was normal. Rowe still sounds off with his original Playboys Billy Billings (guitar), Peter Carrol (bass) and Graeme ‘Trotta’ Trottman (drums) who were all there in the beginning.

Geelong and Surf Coast Limousines owner Lyn Sammit is one of just two female drivers in the Geelong region. The Geelong grandmother often finds herself doing trips to wineries, or hen’s nights, where her client has requested a female driver. “I had a pack of ‘nuns’ in car the other night, so that was fun,” she says. Lyn got into the business three years ago when her husband bought her first limousine. “My dearest husband had a brainwave and said ‘here dear, have a limousine’,” she says. The business has grown and Lyn now has a stretch limo, a super-stretch limo, and four licensed and insured drivers, including herself. She also has a 12-seat minibus and a town car available. For Lyn the best part of the job is seeing happy faces, and she prides herself on providing a safe and courteous drive. She’s got some regular clients who book her for summer festivals each year, like a Day on the Green in Mt Duneed. “Last year I got to listen to Sir Elton John’s last three songs, so that was amazing,” she says. There are many aspects to the sale of a business including, finance, legals, valuations, financials and more, so obtaining the right advice is crucial. Thankfully BF Brokers Group is trading in Geelong with four different business divisions to assist customers. Director Scott Prosser is a local with extensive experience and qualifications. Scott is both a Registered Business Valuer and Certified Practicing Business Broker (Australian Institute of Business Brokers), with a Bachelor of Business Administration from RMIT and holds a diploma in finance and mortgage broking. The Business Sales, Finance, Business Valuations and General Business Advice divisions of BF Brokers Group work together to provide great customer service and accurate advice. Scott says the team is active in the small business sale market and genuinely knows what businesses are worth. “Other brokers don’t have the same knowledge that we do in regards to lenders and business purchases. “Our services are broad - one day I’ll help people finance their first home and another I’ll organise a sale of a business. “It’s very rewarding because there’s a lot involved and it can be quite complex.” BF Brokers’ five-star rating on Facebook reflects the business’s record of customer satisfaction. “We are honest with our approach and provide clients with realistic advice in regards to value and finance expectations,” Scott says. More information is available by phoning Scott on 0407 349 246, emailing scottp@bfbrokers.com.au or visiting bfbrokersgroup.com.au.

Osteopaths assess each patient’s individual need.

Team approach to treat those aches treatment, appropriate rehabilitation and education about injury prevention. They also believe in a team approach and also have podiatry, exercise physiology, myotherapy and Pilates services available. The Pilates classes are conducted in a renovated exercise rehabilitation room at the new Lara Clinic. The aim of the Pilates classes and the exercise physiology sessions is to manage injury prevention by improving spinal stability, posture and balance, and flexibility. The classes involve up to six people at a time and are small enough that the Pilates instructors are able to work closely with each individual and ensure correct muscle activation and technique. Kardinia Osteopathic Clinic is at 15 Fyans Street, South Geelong, and 16 Station Lake Road, Lara. For more information phone 5221 1877 or visit www.kardiniaclinic.com.au.

At the Kardinia Osteopathic Clinic our philosophy is that the best results are achieved through accurate diagnosis, prompt treatment, appropriate rehabilitation and education about injury prevention.

Aiming for peak performance With the Olympics around the corner, thousands of elite athletes are using health treatments such as chiropractic care to perform at their peak. Chiropractors at Latrobe Health Centre would like to remind people that everyone can back their own inner athlete and perform to their peak by reducing pain, improving posture and living a healthy lifestyle. “Every day more and more Australians experience disabling low back pain, neck pain and headaches, limiting their ability to work and engage in an active healthy life,” said chiropractor Kyle Keenan. The clinic’s other chiropractor Rebecca Keenan said: “Think about all the hours you spend each day sitting at work or school, commuting, on your computer or other mobile device and watching television. “Poor posture used during these activities increases pressure on your spine which can cause lower back pain, neck pain, headaches and fatigue.”

Those who find that back pain, neck pain or headaches or poor postural fitness is impacting their ability to live life to the fullest should visit a chiropractor at Latrobe Health Centre to help Back Your Inner Athlete. Chiropractic care is an increasingly common and effective treatment for back pain, neck pain and headaches, eliminating the need for drugs or surgery. “Helping patients make positive changes in respect to nutrition, exercise and wellness is also fundamental to maintaining normal spinal function,” said Kyle. “Adopting healthy habits today, such as improving postural fitness, can significantly reduce the risk of injury or pain in later years. “What’s more, good spinal health can benefit our self-esteem, social relationships and mental health,” he said. Latrobe Health Centre is at 291 LaTrobe Terrace, Geelong. Phone 5222 6868.

STUDENTS will swap the vistas of Norway for the Australian coastline as part of the Southern Cross Cultural Exchange.

A world without any borders Is there a world without borders? There is according to famous Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl or Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. “Borders, I have never seen one,” Heyerdahl once famously said. “But I have heard they exist in the minds of some people.” The famous Scandinavian embarked on his 8000 km Kon-Tiki expedition on a hand-built raft and the world learned that vast distances did not hinder ancient peoples from reaching faraway places. When it comes to bridging cultures, Southern Cross Cultural Exchange believes that “the whole family, not just the individual, stands to gain” from the actions of one youth living half a world away,” said Rob Lindsay, national director at SCCE. Can anyone be part of a young student’s adventure in discovering the world through exchange?

The answer from the award-winning SCCE is they can. The educational exchange organisation has successfully linked highly-curious, motivated and adaptable high schools students with their Australian counterparts, and vice-versa half a world away. Come mid-July, youths from Thor Heyerdahl’s home country Norway as well as Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan and France are hoping to learn more about Australia and make friends with their Australians counterparts and families as a guest of their family. While SCCE takes care of the student’s school enrolment and other arrangements families, families are encouraged to take up a global invitation to become a volunteer host family even for a short duration. For more details, call 1800 500 501 or email scceaust@scce.com.au or visit scce.com.au

GEELONG BRAKE & CLUTCH

Free Brake Check! Chris Dalton

Rest easy, Dalton Automotive know all about vehicles No matter if it’s a competition vehicle or the daily drive, performance and economy matters, as Dalton Automotive know well. It’s the passion behind competing in motor sports that helps the team at Dalton Automotive ensure that every car drives out of the workshop in tip top form. Chris Dalton says Dalton Automotive has been servicing and repairing vehicles from everyday vehicles to race cars for the last 22 years. “We offer a full range of services from a basic handbook service to full engine rebuilds,” Chris explains. “New car servicing is a speciality and it doesn’t affect any factory warranties, all carried out to handbook specifications.” The VACC accredited member and repairer offers services from just $139. But it’s the chassis dyno that gives Dalton Automotive the edge on most workshops, enabling Chris and his staff the ability to fine tune any car. Chris says a dyno tune can add 10 to 15 per cent to performance and power and five to 10 per cent to the economy. Dalton Automotive also handles an increasing number of diesel powered cars, including performance upgrades, servicing and dyno tuning. “We love it, we are passionate about what we do,” Chris says. It’s why customers with modified cars also bring Chris their daily drive for everything from service and repair work to major rebuilds. And given that Chris still races his Mazda RX7, Dalton Automotive are also rotary specialists. Dalton Automotive is at 10 Wood St, South Geelong phone 5224 2708.

SPORT Cats in paws for thought in match with lowly ’Pies By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Flashback to the NAB challenge - Collingwood gains the third-quarter momentum and slams through 11 goals, bagging an eight point win. Despite it being the pre-season, expectations grew from that. What a difference the real season makes. Collingwood was so far removed from the pre-season side in its first seven rounds the AFL would be excused for checking player registrations to make sure there hadn’t been a Fine Cotton type substitution. The Pies finally got going last week but it was against an insipid Brisbane so there’s danger in reading too much into it. Nevertheless Collingwood dominated Gee-

long when they met in round 22 last year, kicking 11 goals to three in the first half. It was the game that Daniel Menzel kicked four goals in during his comeback game after four knee reconstructions. It will play into the hands of coach Chris Scott who is fond of warning his players to expect a side’s best. Geelong, on the other hand, put in a sterling effort against a well-credentialed Adelaide with only inaccuracy veiling its true domination. Given that, the Cats have the opportunity to erase any lingering memories of those losses. Of course things are a bit different now with Geelong’s midfield running hot and Cam Guthrie inserting himself into the consciousness of commentators after murdering the Crows. The second-placed Cats have won their past

six games by an average margin of 56 points, boasting the highest percentage in the AFL. Collingwood’s midfield drivers Scott Pendlebury, Steele Sidebottom and Adam Treloar will have to make up the clearance difference against Joel Selwood, Patrick Dangerfield and Guthrie. And if it doesn’t get the ball, Steve Motlop appears at time to have his own with his linking runs from half-back and finding a leading team mate in the forward 50. Geelong’s clearance figures this season are a marked improvement on last season. The side is ranked third while Collingwood is ranked 14th. The Cats lead the count for marks inside 50, averaging 16.9 per game thanks largely to spearhead Tom Hawkins who is ranked first with a total of 30.

TOKYO DREAM: Elly Bayes shows the skill that has earned a place in the state gymnastics team. (Nadia Boyce)

Fine balancing act to represent state in gymnastics By LUKE VOOGT Five junior Geelong gymnasts will represent Victoria at a 2016 Australian Gymnastics Championships next week. Team member Elly Bayes said she couldn’t wait to compete. “I’m really honoured to be there this year.” The Geelong West 14-year-old travels to Melbourne six days a week for 32 hours of training. Elly said she found her passion for gymnastics seven years ago as a “very active“ child around the house.

“I was always trying to do flips off the furniture. Mum was, like, ‘better get her to do gymnastics so she gets some help’.” Elly said she enjoyed the thrill of performing but nothing beat the feeling of learning a new skill. “When you’ve been working on something for ages and you finally accomplish it it’s a great feeling.” Elly said she had competed at championships previous but next week would be her first experience in its Junior International division. Coach Tracey Penaluna said she had been putting Elly through her paces on the vault, beam,

uneven bars and floor routines in preparation for the next level. “I think she’ll do well in this division.” Elly said her dream was to represent Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Elly’s coach rating her a chance. “That would mean the world to me,” Elly said. The other Geelong gymnasts at the championships will be Sam Lindeman, Heath Thorpe, Mila Blyth and Rose Blackhall. All five are too young to qualify for this year’s Rio Olympics. Melbourne’s Hisense Arena will host 14,000 athletes in 6000 routines at the championships from Monday to 4 June.

Pier perfection ON THE BITE Chris Pitman St Leonards continued attracting anglers over the past week with bag-limit captures of whiting to 40cm common. But what really caught attention was the exceptional whiting taken land-based from St Leonards Pier. Keen anglers using fresh squid and pippies in conjunction with lengthy casts out from the end of the pier landed fish to 40cm along with the odd pinkie and Australian salmon as a by-catch. Squid were also taken from the pier. Daniel Magee caught some to 900g while casing jigs for a few hours after dark last week. Whiting also dominated reports from Queenscliff where usual haunts, like the grass beds to the left of the harbour, produced quality fish to 45cm. Swan Bay provided more shelter for anglers who caught respectable bags of squid and, inside the main channel, gummy sharks to 6kg. Tackleworld Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos fished Saturday morning inside the Queenscliff Harbour. Anchoring near the yachts, Peri caught numerous silver trevally, whiting and salmon with a mixture of tactics including soft plastics and bait. The Barwon River estuary fished well for mullet, salmon, whiting and silver trevally, although most were reached only 30cm. Anglers who took time to gather fresh baits such as Bass yabbies and shrimp caught black bream around the Sheepwash. Mulloway remained elusive in the estuary but should return with the recent rain and dropping water temperature. Corio Bay produced pinkie snapper on soft plastics cast hard against structure, while salmon to just over 1kg schooled in large numbers from Rippleside Jetty through to the grammar school lagoon entrance. Diving birds betrayed salmon feeding on the surface while fishing deep around piers was successful when the schooling activity ceased. Wild weather again made fishing difficult down the western district but anglers who had opportunities to fishing out of Portland and Port Fairy caught southern bluefin tuna and albacore from the shelf. On the freshwater front, Adam Van Der Luht spent more time casting lures from the main rock wall at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir where he had no trouble banking redfin to over 40cm on Entice vibes. The action should start to fire up with water now running into the lake. West Barwon Reservoir remained productive for brown trout for anglers casting Daiwa Double Clutches around the marBANKED: Adam Van Der gins. Low water al- Lugt with another redfin. lowed anglers to cover ground which was usually inaccessible. Last week Daniel Baden and I ventured up to the Eucumbene River where we caught excellently conditioned brown trout to 2.5kg on lightly weighted flies. Anyone thinking of capitalising on the rising river should take plenty of spare flies and terminal tackle because fishing as close to the bottom as possible is essential. Next week should be worth fishing for the incredible numbers of whiting off St Leonards and Queenscliff, while the Barwon estuary and Queenscliff Harbour will be option if the wind’s strong. Freshwater fishos should keep an eye on West Barwon and Wurdee Boluc reservoirs for redfin and trout. 33 GEELONG INDY Friday, 20 May, 2016
