Premier king of the kids By LUKE VOOGT VICTORIAN Premier Daniel Andrews received a celebrity welcome as he visited Ocean Grove Primary (OGPS) today, promoting the State Government’s $4m grant for the school. Excited students clamoured to high-five the Premier as he approached the school’s gates.

“It’s always good to get welcomed to a great state school like this,” he said. From there the small crowd of students followed Mr Andrews, and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville, as they toured the school. The Premier then took questions from a student at a time in a specially set-up green room.

The children asked questions ranging from Mr Andrews’ family life, to how government works. “This is just like the 7.30 Report,” Mr Andrews said. “They were great questions probably more thoughtful than the answers.” The State Government set aside the $4m in its 2016-1'7 Budget to

upgrade the OGPS’s aging buildings. “The current portable classrooms, they are showing their age,” Mr Andrews said. “We’re giving students at Ocean Grove Primary the world-class facilities they need to reach their full potential.” Bellarine Secondary College

also received $1.18m from the State Government in the 2016-'17 Budget. The funding is part of the State Government’s $1.1 billion investment in school infrastructure across Victoria. Ocean Grove Primary School received a $28,328 equity funding boost this year.

Owner fear on dogs threat By LUKE VOOGT EMPEROR Drive resident John Corlett fears for the safety of his dogs after receiving threatening anonymous letters recently in the mail. “I don’t let my dogs outside when I’m out anymore,” John said. “I even go out at night and check my boundaries with a torch before I let the dogs out.” John photographed the latest letter on 9 May, which came with a clear sandwich bag containing two pieces of meat, with a white substance inside. The letter reads: “LAST WARNING C***S. DOGS GET THESE IF YOU DON’T SHUT THEM UP ARROGANT, PROUD, SELFISH ASHOLES (sic). OBEDIENCE TRAINING = ZERO. VET BILL = HUNDREDS. YOUR CHOICE!” John received a “less threatening“ letter two weeks before, which his wife threw out. He said he posted an invitation on his fence for the sender to talk to him personally. “My dogs are precious to me,” he said. “Anybody who would even contemplate killing or injuring an animal is cold, callous, and dangerous.” The retired 73-year-old has lived in Ocean Grove for 20 years,

and has always considered it a safe place. “I’m angry because it’s a bit like vinegar in the wine,” he said. “The Bellarine is one of the best places to live and then you get some nut-ball doing a thing like that.” John has sought advice from a vet to reduce his dogs’ barking, who recommended food puzzles to keep them busy. The vet, John said, discouraged bark collars and muzzles because they were “cruel”. John struggles to imagine who left the note, and said that most of his neighbours have dogs of their own. “Dog interaction is one of the things we love about living here,” he said. “Barking is annoying but keeping them inside is impossible, they need exercise and they love people.” John said his neighbour, who has lived in Ocean Grove for 25 years, received a similar threatening letter in the mail. The Voice spoke to the neighbour, who did not wish to be named, to confirm this. Other Ocean Grove residents posted copies of similar threatening letters with meat on Facebook. John reported the incident to police, who are now investigating. Anyone with information can call Bellarine Police Station on 5256 2698.

Tanker took 10 years to make it to town TOP CFA members and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville were at the Wallington Fire Brigade on Sunday, for the handover of its second tanker. CFA Operations Officer Ian Beswicke and Assistant Chief Officer Bob Barry were at the handover - 10 years in the making. Wallington Brigade Captain Craig Warren said it was an auspicious occasion. He said former members Tim Monahan and Rhys Esler, and current member Alistair Drayton first raised the need for the tanker a decade ago. “For the 20 years that I have been associated with the brigade, Wallington has made itself available for every major fire campaign,” Mr Warren said. “Ash Wednesday, Black Saturday, the North-East campaigns as well as every significant event in the local region - unfortunately there have been plenty of them.“

These campaigns, Mr Warren said, would take the brigade’s tanker away, leaving Wallington exposed. After years of sausage sizzles, and garage sales, the brigade raised enough money to apply for a government grant for the tanker. The bid was successful and the tanker arrived in Wallington last November. After four weeks of training the brigade put it into operation. A week later it deployed the tanker to the fires that devastated the Otways last year. “It has already made a significant contribution to protecting the community,” Mr Warren said. “I’d like to thank the Victorian Government and the CFA for making Wallington Tanker 2 a reality. “Equally to the Wallington members who fund-raised for and now crew the appliance, a big thankyou.”

Driver charged and hoon car seized POLICE charged a 25-year-old Barwon Heads man on his learner’s permit this week for allegedly driving at 120km/h through a 50km/h zone in Ocean Grove. Police allege the man ignored a stop sign as he sped down Eggleston Street in a green Ford Falcon at noon on 11 May. Senior Constable Simon McCarty said officers did not pursue the car due to Victoria Police’s pursuit policy. Police executed a search warrant at a Barwon Heads address the following morning and seized the car under anti-hoon legislation. They charged the man with driving without learner plates, driving without a licenced driver, disobeying a stop sign, dangerous speeding and driving in a dangerous manner. He will appear in Geelong Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Sen Const McCarty said he was disappointed that anyone would put public safety at risk by speeding. “It’s pretty dangerous at any time of the day, but particularly at lunch time in a busy street,” he said. Any witnesses are urged to call Bellarine police on 5256 2698.

Cuppas raised for cure Ocean Grove musician Andrea Robertson performed and Emma Glynn gave floral demonstrations. Several local businesses donated items for silent auction, as well as the Geelong Football Club. All funds raised went Cancer Council Victoria.

By LUKE VOOGT THE Ocean Grove community came together on Thursday 19 May to fight cancer, raising a record $3700 at Wave’s Biggest Morning Tea. The figure was up $1200 on last year’s record, despite 30 fewer people attending. Organiser and church pastor Sandra Cooper thanked the local businesses and individuals that gave their time and money. “It means a lot to be able to do this as a community,” she said. “It’s good getting to know more and more people - we see different people every year.” Sandra is no stranger to the pain caused by cancer. Her sister died in hospital from cancer earlier this month, just a year after losing another sister to the disease. She dedicated the event to her two sisters “and others who have lost their lives or have gone through cancer”. The 90 people gathered at the church enjoyed silent auctions, silly hat competitions and delicious cakes and sandwiches for morning tea.

Concept drawings for the planned building at 97 The Terrace.

Say hello to high-rise living streetscape By LUKE VOOGT THE Ocean Grove streetscape will change dramatically over the next few years, with a number of buildings over 10 metres tall planned for the CBD. Character Building recently released concept drawings for a 10.5-metre apartment building at 97 The Terrace. The building will be taller than the planned motel at 99 The Terrace (although with one

less level). According to plans for both buildings submitted to the council, the apartment building will have a greater area than the motel. The building’s designer, Mike Higgins, said new State and council legislation could see similar buildings being built near Ocean Grove’s CBD. “In a lot of areas the direction has been towards higher density,” he said.

He said residents could expect more buildings this size within a 700m radius of the CBD, as well as in Barwon Heads. Character Building owns the property, and manager Chris Cornell was keen to begin construction and promote the new luxury apartments. “We’re really looking forward to bringing it to the market in the coming weeks,” he said. “It’s a pretty exciting development for Ocean Grove.”

Mr Cornell said several apartments will have water views without “the price tag people have come to expect”. He expects them to appeal to downsizers, first home buyers and professional families. There were only four objections made before the council approved a permit for the building. Mr Cornell said these weren’t regarding the building itself but rather design details.

GREATER Geelong Council recently announced its intention to charge residents $1.2 million to seal 1.4km of roads around Baker Street in Ocean Grove. The council plans to seal all unsealed portions of Field Street South, and Baker, Osborne and Inskip streets. Local resident David Wynn said the project was costly but much-needed. He and his dad John’s family business, Riverview Caravan Park, has operated in the area for 70 years. “It’s certainly a cost to our business,” he said. “But the area has lacked maintenance on the roads for many years.” Mr Wynn said the project would reduce dust in the area and benefit Ocean Grove as a whole. He said sealing Field Street South - a common route to Main Beach - would greatly improve safety for pedestrian beachgoers. “Once it’s done it doesn’t have to be done again,” he said. The council’s city services general manager William Tieppo said 106 properties will benefit from the special charge scheme. Mr Tieppo said The Esplanade, between Field Street South and Inskip Street, would also be constructed but would not be included as part of the scheme. The total cost of the project was estimated at $1,899,146, which included improvements to intersections. This will include a council contribution of $324,480 for underground drainage improvements, $173,040 to construct The Esplanade, and $210,244 for sealing roads. Mr Tieppo said under the scheme ratepayers would contribute $1,191,382 to the project. “This project follows extensive community consultation,” he said. “It will provide benefits such as improved nature strips and property frontage appearance, resident comfort and safety and reduced levels of dust and mud.”

Ned’s lord of the rings

OCEAN Grove traders have found support for the installation of CCTV cameras in The Terrace in the form of Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. Ms Henderson hosted an Ocean Grove community crime meeting with Federal Minister for Justice Michael Keenan at Ocean Grove Bowling Club last week. “Like many members of the community, I an incredibly concerned about the recent increase in crime in Ocean Grove,” she said. “That’s why I hosted an Ocean Grove community crime meeting with Federal Minister for Justice Michael Keenan this week. I have been working with the Ocean Grove Business Association to support its application for $53,000 to install CCTV cameras in The Terrace commercial precinct via round two of the Safer Streets Program.” Ocean Grove businesses have suffered a spate of burglaries and break-ins in recent months, prompting calls for CCTV cameras to be installed. “I am lobbying on behalf of the Ocean Grove traders in their bid for Safer Streets funding, as well as other communities,” Ms Henderson said.

Australian under-20 hammer throw champion Ned Weatherly. 154495 bers walking into the huge soccer stadium in front of 30,000 people. “The thought that they were all here to watch me was pretty special,” he said. Ned first competed in shot put in primary school, coming sixth in the National Athletic Championships. It was there he was told he “had more of a hammer thrower’s build”. He got a coach and has been training ever since. Ned’s now the Australian under-20 shot put and hammer throw champion, and holds the national the under-16 and under-18 hammer throw records. “I love the individuality of it - it’s the ultimate test of speed,

strength and balance,” Ned said. “You can be short and a bit smaller than a shot putter.” Ned has written his ambition to compete in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 on his bedroom wall. “They’re something I’m really aspiring to,” he said. The World under-20 Athletics Championships take place in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in July. Rotary and Lions are seeking donations or auction items for the trivia night, which takes place at 7pm, 14 June. Lift off for Elaine Masters weightlifting champion Elaine Janes with her multitude of medals and trophies. 154393

1227745-DJ20-16

OCEAN Grove powerhouse Elaine Janes is off to Hobart next month, to attempt a new record at the Australian Masters Weightlifting Championships. Elaine will attempt the clean and jerk record, for the 70-74 age group in the 63-69kg division. Elaine said she’s addicted to weightlifting for its benefits. Despite her age she’s on no medication whatsoever. “It gives you so much energy and keeps you mentally and physically strong,” she said. “A lot of people my age just want to sit on the couch and watch TV.” Weightlifting has also helped Elaine fight depression. “I have no family, so it gives me a purpose,” she said. “It’s helped me out of a hole before.” Elaine said people often tell her she doesn’t look like a weightlifter. For her it’s not surprising, she’s a lady who likes to dress up. “I tell them you don’t have to be big to be strong,” she said. “It’s all about technique – over the years I’m lifting less but with much better technique.” The powerlifting pocket-rocket trains three mornings a week and has been with the Geelong Weightlifting club for 12 years. She came across weightlifting at a healthy living fair, when she was promoting bocce. “I don’t even play bocce – I was just helping Club Italia,” she said. Nearby was an unmarked stall with two men and a weightlifting bar. “My curiosity got the better of me,” Elaine said. “They talked me into picking up a bar.” From then on she was hooked, though she didn’t tell anybody she was weightlifting for months. She’s competed in every state championship since, as well as five world championships. Elaine will part with her three beloved chooks to go to Hobart, including her photogenic fowl, Flapper, who the Voice met last fortnight.

Jeff Izatt has been part of the Ocean Grove Snooker Club for 34 years. 154231

He’s playing to win OCEAN Grove Snooker Club will celebrate decades of potting balls and mateship at its 40th anniversary this July. Wallington bricklayer Jeff Itzatt has been part of the club for 34 of those years. “That’s a fair bit more than half my life,” he said. The 57-year-old hasn’t missed a season since 1983, and loves the social aspect of the club. “There’s no malice after the

game - although when you play you are out there to win,” he said. “We’ve got a cross-section of every occupation.” The club has 14 tables at homes around Ocean Grove and Wallington, with a home and away season, and has had several players in their nineties. “I can’t see myself stopping,” Jeff said. “We’ve had people play until they drop.” Jeff’s team started as The Ter-

race Turkeys, whose “home ground” was his brother-in-law Phil Emery’s house. “It’s a silly name but we didn’t know how long we would be playing,” he said. The team moved to Jeff’s “man cave” in Wallington, when he built a house there in 1990. “We’ve dropped The Terrace but we kept the turkeys,” he said. Jeff is a life member of the club and has won four singles championships and four premierships.

But he’s no match for the club’s star, Roy Tan, who wins regularly in Geelong’s A Grade fixture. Roy, Jeff said, doesn’t take part in singles or doubles competition, as he’d trounce the other players. Ocean Grove Snooker Club is inviting players past and present to its 40th anniversary at McGlashan Estate, Wallington, on 10 July. Entertainment includes Cam Henderson and Steve Kucine. DESPITE billions of Australian taxpayer dollars funneled to putting computers into the hands of school children we have still not received a satisfactory evidence-based rationalisation from our government policy makers for the use of these as teaching/learning aids in schools. This ‘trial and error’ approach means our children’s brains are being used for an experiment. One that sadly would fail formal ethical and moral research guidelines. Measured against world standards, Australian children’s literacy and numeracy continue their decline while concurrently scholarly research repeatedly shows computer use by children in a school setting has negative outcomes on their overall learning. Ominously our allied health professionals continue raising alarm bells at the increase in physical, psychological and social illnesses they witness being directly linked to children’s computer usage. The outcomes being worse for our most vulnerable lower socio-economic children. Nonetheless the responsible political parties and their multinational corporate ‘friends’ that provide these goods, are laughing all the way to their financial reporting meetings. There is no place for computers in preschools and primary schools. Their use in secondary schools must fall within strict boundaries and only if able to be based on intelligent research demonstrating achievable, desired and safe outcomes. Foundation Trustee Peter Lamb said the job is far from over. “More than 700 Australian kids are diagnosed every year with various forms of childhood cancer and unfortunately we are still seeing around three kids dying every week,” he said. Lions club president Lloyd Smith said the vital research supported by the foundation could help increase survival rates. “Help us support our vision of a 100 per cent survival rate for kids with cancer,” he said.

THE Federal Government provided $2380 for Ocean Grove Coastcare this month to help rejuvenate the local coastline. The funding is part of a $37,405 grant to six coastal groups in the marginal seat of Corangamite, two months before the Federal Election. Ocean Grove Coastcare president Frances McAloon said the grant will go towards local dune works, starting on 29 May. Ms McAloon said Coastcare would concentrate on dunes at 16W and 17W beaches, which have been degraded by erosion, fires and illegal parties. “We really need to get in and do some rubbish and weed removal, and replanting,” she said. are my Sunshine”. All the pre-schoolers made their loved ones a decorated jewellery box and a beaded necklace, bracelet or earrings, to remember the day.

freetime The Voice guide to arts and entertainment

Former child soldier finds hope THE Wave will welcome former Ugandan child soldier Grace Arach this month for “A Night of Hope”. Presented by World Vision Australia, A Night of Hope is a rare opportunity to hear Grace’s inspirational story, along with performances by award-winning Australian singer Levi McGrath. Grace and Levi are touring Victoria and South Australia and will come to Ocean Grove on 28 May. Grace was abducted into the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) at the age of 12. After enduring the horrors of war and becoming a child bride to a leader of the LRA, Grace made her dramatic escape and found refuge at a World Vision Child Soldier Rehabilitation Centre in Uganda. In 2009, Levi McGrath and his wife Megan spent six life-changing months working with former child soldiers in Uganda through World Vision. Meeting Grace in Uganda has greatly impacted his life and music. Levi will share the stage with Grace and perform songs written about his time in Uganda. “The Night of Hope Tour will move you deeply and reveal the harrowing realities facing children affected by war,” Levi said.

Grace Arach and Levi McGrath. 154461

“I’m proud to be sharing my music alongside Grace - a remarkable woman with a powerful story of courage in the face of extreme adversity.” Levi McGrath is an independent singer-songwriter, and an assistant musical director of choirs for the disadvantaged and marginalised. He believes much work and music is needed, to help turn the tide of poverty, apathy and human suffering.

Grace Arach. 154461

“I’m really excited to share a message of hope through my experiences working with child soldiers in Uganda,” he said. “Grace’s gripping story of survival and recovery from life as a child soldier will give Australians a rare glimpse into a unique area of World Vision’s life-changing work.” The free event starts at 7pm and anyone is welcome to attend. BUILDING YOUR

Dream HOME Worth a look - your local builder

Jason Illingworth is your local Jim’s Building Consultant. 154453 JASON Illingworth is the local Jims Building Consultant. He has been involved in the local building industry for over 25 years with experience in all aspects of the industry including new home construction, carpentry and joinery,

as well as building product sales. Jason both owned and managed a successful joinery business for over 15 years supplying quality timber and steel staircases to the public and builders across Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and

Surf Coast. More recently he has returned to studying, completing a Certificate IV in Building and Construction in 2012, Asbestos Assessment Certificate and Timber Pest and Termite Certificates in 2014 and has just

finished studying for his Diploma in Building Surveying. Services include pre-purchase building and pest inspections including asbestos assessing as well as new construction stage inspections.

Boundaries make dollars and sense WHEN it comes to building, renovating or extending a ‘dream home’ we tend to forget about the significance of the land we are building on. In some, if not most cases, land value is greater than the value of the dream home, yet our planning is focused on the home. In years to come your land will be the financial hero of your investment, not the dream home. Smith Land Surveyors acts on behalf of your land. They understand that the title dimensions on your plan of subdivision determine the boundary of your little piece of Victoria, not your existing fencing. To compare the existing fencing and buildings with the location of your legal title boundaries you will need a licensed surveyor to carry out a Title Re-Establishment Survey. Including a Title Re-Establishment Survey in the planning stages of building your dream home eliminates the risk of building outside your legal boundary and prevents someone else from ‘accidently’ building on your land. Smith Land Surveyors are a licensed company and can help you ensure that the land you have purchased or are considering purchasing is the land you are entitled to. With a head office in Geelong and visiting offices on the Bellarine and Surf Coast, Smith Land Surveyors will most likely have surveyed a land parcel near you. So before you begin planning for that dream home, consider your land and what it means to you.

WHEN a lot of people think of St Leonards (and Indented Head), they immediately think ‘fishing’. The jetty is a great spot for catching squid. October and November are the best months for fishing off the pier, but good catches can be had at any time of year. Nearby Swan Bay is shallow and is a perfect area for safe breeding grounds for flathead, garfish, whiting and snapper and good hauls can be found there. At the moment, anglers are catching whiting up to 40cm and are reporting hauls of pinkies and the odd Australian salmon. St Leonards is a great drawcard for anglers all over, but it’s the locals who get to take advantage of this superb spot 12 months a year. Whether it’s from the pier, from land or out on a boat, the fishing has never been better here.

A slice of perfection WHEN Affettati and Co were looking for the bread to stock in their store that would perfectly match the range of cheese salami and prosciutto, they were thrilled to discover Zeally Bay Sourdough bakery in Torquay. Zeally Bay Sourdough is a wholefood bakery and the first artisan sourdough bakery in Victoria to offer a fully certified range of genuine, quality, handcrafted loaves. Zeally Bay sourdough is naturally made - their team of artisan bakers makes the full-fermentation sourdough slowly over 30 hours. Made slowly using a unique blend of organic flours, filtered water, the 30-year-old family leaven and natural sea salt,

Zeally Bay’s delicious crusty robust breads have a complex aroma, a wellbaked appearance and a chewy satisfying texture. Affettati and Co stock Southern Casalinga, their best-selling rustic style loaf; ciabatta, best sliced horizontally and filled for fantastic continental style sandwiches, and batard, a smaller and crustier version of the casalinga. A must try is the olive and rosemary bread, packed with great tasting, plump olives from Mt Zero, and don’t forget some wholemeal options - the stoneground wholegrain and the spelt, buckwheat and polenta loaves.

Gardens the way you want them NO Dig Garden boxes in Drysdale has been in business for 12 years now on the Bellarine. Vince Panetta and his team of three to four staff have been crafting out assorted sizes of garden boxes so that people can grow beautiful home-grown vegies or what ever they want. There are many advantages with using a garden box to grow produce. The frower is able to control pesticides and the like, or become organic! A no-dig garden can be made up of layers of organic material that are stacked up to form a rich, raised garden area. The no-dig garden box can be

whatever height is desired. Vegetable seedlings, flowering annuals, herbs, bulbs and strawberries all thrive in a no-dig garden. Growers can maximise the position to make use of the sun shining in to their back yard. Existing soil might not be suitable for what a gardener may want to grow, so they can create a soil mix that will. And being in a confined garden box it will maximise the moisture content and save on excess water usage. They offer delivery and it takes around five days from receiving an order to getting the finished garden box to the customer. Call Vince on 0412 176 405 to discuss.

Laying eyes on the powerful owl AT LAST there has been some decent rain over the past few weeks, which has been a relief. There have been some glorious balmy sunny days mixed with a few wet ones- just perfect autumn weather. The biggest highlight for me over the past few weeks was to finally lay eyes on a magnificent and endangered powerful owl. A few years ago I noticed on Birdline Victoria that there were two powerful owls seen several times along the river in Newstead, near Castlemaine, so when I had a day off work I drove to Newstead determined to see them, to no avail. Then I read on Birdline soon after that there were powerful owls in Williamstown, in the plane trees near the Shipyards, so on several occasions I drove down to see them, again to no avail. Then last year there were two powerful owls at Ironbark Basin, near Point Addis, so once again I regularly visited the area and attempted to find them, to no avail. Powerful owls are 55cms long, so if they are present they should be relatively easy to spot I thought to myself every time I tried to see one. So when I read on Birdline Victoria a few weeks ago that there were two powerful owls frequenting the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, I told the family that my Mother’s Day present would be a trip to the Botanics to see the owls. I met some other keen birdwatchers looking for the owls, and we couldn’t find them- not one trace. I checked Birdline a few days later and the birds were still at the Botanical Gardens, so I thought to myself “rightio Jennifer, it’s about time you got your act together here and do not leave the Botanics until you are successful“ So on my next day off work, anoth-

Powerful owl. 154326 er trip to Melbourne was undertaken. I walked around and around Fern Gully, and saw plenty of beautiful birds, but no powerful owls. Then I had a bright (and very overdue) idea to ask two garden employees for some hints on how to find them, and they pointed me to a few trees opposite Fern Gully. It took a while to find an owl, as the one I saw was very high up in a tree, behind a few branches. It’s amazing that such a big bird can make discovery very difficult; as they are very clever at hiding and camouflaging. I was very grateful to at last set eyes on such a magnificent creature. Powerful owls are the largest of the Australian nocturnal birds. Their feath-

Collared sparrowhawk. 154326 ers are grey-brown with white barring. Their eyes are yellow and they have huge yellow/orange feet with very sharp talons. The female is smaller, with a narrower head (their head is small in proportion to their body anyway). When I saw the powerful owl at the Botanics, I was expecting piercing yellow eyes to be staring down at me, but the eyes looked brown. The bird was under a thick canopy of trees and it was quite dark, so I couldn’t see the colours that well, and consequently my photos were ordinary, so I will have to go down yet again on a clear day and try to say hello to the owls again. I went to a great talk given by Craig

Morley about migratory shorebirds sponsored by the Bellarine Landcare Group. The talk was given on World Migratory Bird Day on 11 May. It’s great that the Bellarine Landcare Group organise such interesting and informative information sessions. We are fortunate to live in an area where migratory shorebirds can be seen. The numbers of these birds are rapidly decreasing due to habitat destruction, which is just terrible. I received a lovely email and photo from Susanne from Wallington, who found a raptor (and a half-eaten dove) in her chook pen and managed to take a photo. I think that the raptor is a collared sparrowhawk, as it has very long

legs, a wide-eyed expression (rather than a brown goshawk beetle brow), and a square shaped tail rather than a goshawk rounded tail. I stand to be corrected, but I am pretty sure that Susanne’s raptor is a collared sparrowhawk, I am happy to report that her chooks survived the intrusion of the raptor into their home, but I bet they were pretty shaken up. I also received an email from Susan who has also had a blue budgerigar visit her garden. There may be a few escapees out there in the wilds of Ocean Grove, hopefully all living happily with a flock of sparrows as reported by Coral a few months ago! Jen Carr, jennifer.carr6@bigpond.com

week we saw a Ring-tail Possum be chased from its habitat into the Barwon estuary to escape being potentially killed by a dog. We have dog control orders in place to not only protect the community but our precious wildlife. Please note our dog control until 1st May. We are experiencing a high number of dog walkers not complying with the regulations. Also note the Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary is a NO DOG ZONE all year round

Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline. BHSG conducts projects to enhance the local environment and its sustainability.

OCEAN GROVE SURF BEACH COMPLEX Barwon Coast continue to work with the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club to finalise the plans for the redevelopment of the building. The redevelopment of the SLSC And The Dunes café is considered a high priority project and all efforts are being made to finalise the redevelopment plans as soon as is possible; when finalised redevelopment timelines will be established so that work can begin at the earliest opportunity for all concerned. CYLINDERS BEACH ACCESS – 31W BARWON HEADS Barwon Coast is continuing to work

This local community project aims to increase knowledge and appreciation of the biodiversity and fragility of the Barwon Estuary. The project team is calling for participants to record estuary observations online or in a diary, attend workshops, guided walks and expert talks, and contribute to a community publication. As residents and visitors develop a communal understanding of the estuary and become more skilled in sharing their learning and observations via a range of communication strategies, the community will be more motivated and able to collaboratively initiate practical and innovative conservation activities using the infrastructure and experience of existing groups such as Barwon Estuary Watch, Barwon Coast and Barwon Heads Sustainability Group.

BALLOONS Again recently we experienced a cluster of balloons in the atmosphere that descended upon the middle of the lower sections of the Barwon estuary. Balloons both on the land and in our waterways cause significant harm to wildlife and fish as well as water quality. Balloons are best kept indoors out of harms way. From time to time people release balloons to raise funds, to create awareness of a cause, or to remember a loved on. But there are alternatives such as bubble wands, flying kites, flags or streamers, placement of colourful pinwheels, seaweed wreaths, or have a night even using coloured solar lights. Groms on the attack WITH two competitions in three weeks, it’s been a busy time for the 13th Beach Boardriders. While both events were epic, the conditions for each were at the opposite ends of the wave spectrum. In the first event, the 13th Grove crew took on Heads at Beacon in what can only be described as a very fierce but fun Battle of the Bridge. The battle over which town’s surfers owned bragging rites for local surfing supremacy. Sponsored by the Barwon Heads Community Bank, this annual freefor-all was a tough battle with a little controversy thrown in. While the small waves were perfect for the Super Groms' first appearance at Beacon, it was difficult for the Open surfers to develop momentum in the small shifty peaks. As in the football and netball battle held at the same time, the Heads team took this year’s title. The second event was the penultimate competition of the season. Sponsored by Tonik, the event saw perfect barrelling waves in the four to six foot range at Beacon, probably the best competition conditions the club has seen in a long time. With aggregate ratings close in all divisions and exceptional waves on offer, the judge’s task was exceptionally difficult to separate winners from losers in what was a barrelfest. The Super Groms also had excellent conditions at Mick’s Steps,

Grove and really shredded in the near perfect two-foot peelers. Results Super Groms Under 10: 1st Jerry Kelly, 2nd Monty Mason, 3rd Ted Conroy, 4th Max Bassett. Under 12: 1st Isaiah Norling, 2nd Jack Bassett, 3rd Charlie Cox, 4th Charlie Farrer. Under 14: Zeph Lamperd, 2nd Sean Rielly, 3rd Ellie Harrison, 4th Charlie Mahoney. Tough day for the Waves WOMEN’S DIVISION 1 Surfside Waves 0 lost to Kardinia 4 ANOTHER tough night at home this week, as the Waves struggled to contain Kardinia’s run. Surfside played some good football, but was caught out in the first half by a couple of breakthroughs after heavy Kardinia pressure. Madi Wilding was great in goal as usual and Jasmine Pickett, then Maddie Hill swept well under pressure. The backline held reasonably well with Kate Elstone and Neisha Pearson, then Mel DeBruin and Emma Riley holding Kardinia out. Gina Murphy had a great game in midfield, keeping the team up, plus holding the ball and starting some great plays with Jordan Tabakovic, Cath Sattler and Lexi Pearson. The wingers, Indiah Van Galen, Steffi Wallace, Faye Kendall, Allana Gilbee (who could have had a penalty), and later on Emma Riley, worked hard for little reward, as Kardinia scored another two in the second half even though the Waves were playing better by then and a couple of the Kardinia goals were unlucky rebounds. Overall Kardinia had the run and deserved the win. Surfside Waves 1 drew with Barwon 1 The waves started off a little tentatively for the first 20 minutes, with player of the match Madi Wilding making crucial saves to keep her side in the game. The back four were their usual reliable selves. Jasmine Pickett is looking better every week at sweeper, supported by Kate Elstone, Mel Debruin, Emma Riley, then Neisha Pearson. Allana Gilbee put in great efforts up front, then again in midfield later in the game. Once the team started playing its own game, it became very tight, but the deadlock was broken by a beautiful chip by star striker Lexi Pearson at 65 minutes. Cath Sattler, Jordan Tabakovic and Gina Murphy got control of the midfield, shutting down Barwon’s danger players. Indiah van Galen had a standout game on the wing and Steffi Wallace and Faye Kendall worked hard up and down the wings to keep Barwon under pressure. Barwon equalised in the 79th minute with a bit of a scrappy goal, but overall the draw was a fair result.

Ruck contest: Both sides do battle at the centre bounce. 154240

Captain’s positive views By MARK HEENAN OCEAN Grove senior captain Kelly Williams is confident the Grubbers can overcome their 'form slump’ after the club’s 25-point loss to Anglesea at Alcoa Oval on 14 May. The Grubbers who have dropped to seventh on BFL ladder with a 3-5 record after eight rounds, suffered its third straight defeat after losses to Barwon Heads in round six and Queenscliff in round seven. Anglesea’s win against Ocean Grove snapped a five-game losing streak against the Grubbers at Alcoa Oval. Final scores Anglesea 16.11 (107) d Ocean Grove 12.10 (82). The struggling Grubbers have won one of its last five games, their only victory was against bottom-placed Newcomb in round five. Williams said playing BFL finals was still on the agenda despite the club’s indifferent start to 2016. “Our decision making is letting us down in some games, but I can’t fault our team’s endeavour and effort,” Williams told the Voice. “We have just got to be positive, it will turn. “Drysdale has proven this

season they can beat sides above them on the ladder - we can still play finals.” Williams was outstanding after half-time and named in his side’s best players. The 28-year-old wound back the clock after he booted three inspirational goals in the third term, which gave his side a crucial seven-point lead at three quarter-time. Williams also played a vital role in midfield and was forced to go into defence to limit dangerous Anglesea forward Marcus Smith, who booted six goals. Anglesea co-captain Ryan Dahlhaus, Jackson Bews and ruckman Kyle Pickett all played key games, while Blake Grant booted three goals for home side. Anglesea ran rampant, booting six goals to one kicking with the breeze in the final term. Twent-one of the 28 goals were scored at the more favourable wind-assisted beach end of Alcoa Oval. Ocean Grove players Travis Gavin, James Linton, Jahd Anderson all booted two goals. Grubber ruckman Andrew Jarvis, James Linton and key defender Kaiden Long all played serviceable games.

Young Grubber Matt Caldow did not play after he left the field with concussion in Ocean Grove’s 38-point loss to Queenscliff on 7 May. Grubber experienced pair Liam Rock and Mark Laidler again were both sidelined with injury. Anglesea defeated Ocean Grove in the reserves grade curtain raiser by 59 points. Grubbers star in victory FOUR Ocean Grove representatives played in the BFL’s Interleague resounding 80-point win over Heathcote District Football League at Shell Road Reserve on Saturday 21 May. Grubbers players included senior skipper Kelly Williams, gun recruit James Linton and key ruckman Andrew Jarvis and midfielder Jahd Anderson. Williams, Linton, who kicked one goal, and Jarvis were all named in the best players for the Bellarine. Final scores Bellarine 21.25(151) to Heathcote and District Football League 10.11(71) in the first ever Interleague game played at Ocean Grove’s newest football venue. The Grubbers had the most players out of the Bellarine-based clubs, while fellow BFL teams Barwon Heads and Queenscliff had three representatives each. Ocean Grove’s BFL opponent this Saturday Torquay, last season BFL grand finalists, had no players that took part in the Interleague clash. Home side Bellarine slammed on 10 goals in the final quarter to run away with a 13-goal plus win. The visiting Heathcote team were competitive for three quarters and trailed by only 13 points at three-quarter time. Bellarine’s win over Heathcote snapped a three-game losing streak at Interleague level. Bellarine last tasted an Interleague victory against Western Border Football League in 2012 after defeats to Murray in 2013, Casey in 2014 and Wimmera last year. Drysdale gun on-baller Mitch McGuire, who kicked one goal, won the Brian ‘Bull’ Bennett Medal for being best on ground. Bellarine forward Portarlington’s Dylan Weir kicked five goals, while BFL leading goal-kicker Queenscliff’s Daniel Degois booted four majors. IT was a good weekend for the BFL after the Bellarine defeated Heathcote by a whopping 129 points in the Under 18 curtain raiser game. Final scores Bellarine 23.21(159) to Heathcote and District Football League 4.6(30). Ocean Grove had two representatives with Grubbers Julian Bramucci and Oliver Monteith who both played. 2016 WORKSAFE COMMUNITY CHAMPIONSHIPS SENIORS SCOREBOARD BELLARINE 21.25(151) DEF HEATHCOTE 10.11(71) BELLARINE Goals: D. Coach’s consistency call OCEAN Grove coach Wayne Walsh says the Grubbers need to improve consistency on game day and at training if they have aspirations to play finals in 2016. Ocean Grove heads into the home clash against last season’s BFL grand finalists Torquay this Saturday with a 3-5 record - and desperate for a win to re-ignite the season. “We play Torquay this week, if we beat them we are level with them (on the ladder),” Walsh said. The seventh-placed Grubbers are yet to beat a side above them on the

ladder with wins only against Drysdale, Portarlington and bottom-placed Newcomb. Walsh said a more “consistent” performance was required from all senior players. “My frustration is with consistency with players and playing and the lack of commitment at times, which has caused us to change a lot of our plans,” Walsh told the Voice. “For people to think we are not going that well, they are the reasons. “We are trying to set a culture where you train and work hard on game plans. “We are relying on a few too many

at the moment - that is the issue.” Walsh said it had been disappointing to lose “home grown mid-20s player talent” who have departed the club in recent times. Former Grubbers Harrison Foott and Sam Fairway are no longer playing at Ocean Grove, Jack Rawlings and Corey Walter have crossed to Bell Park, while James McTaggart has managed only two senior games due to work in 2016. “We have no-one at 24 or 25 that have come through the junior ranks at all, we have a massive gap in the system,” he said. “That is what is hurting.”

On the flipside, the Ocean Grove coach said the development of star players Grubber vice-captain Matt Caldow and key tall Brayden Warren was a plus. “They are good young players and leaders,” he said. The Grubbers have unearthed a batch of junior talent from the under-18 Colts system this season. Youngsters Julian Bramucci and Oliver Monteith, who were named in the BFL under-18 interleague squad, have both made their senior debuts. Swashbuckling forward Mickitja Rotumah-Onus who has kicked 12 goals from five matches, snared four

majors in his senior debut against Modewarre in round four. Other youngsters to make their senior debut in 2016 include Byron Taylor, James Teague, James Wills, James Peers and Luke Baastian. Walsh praised Grubber new recruits James Linton, Aaron Baxter, David and Michael King and last season’s prized signings Jahd Anderson and ruckman Andrew Jarvis. “All our new recruits have been brilliant,” he said. Ocean Grove’s senior match against Torquay at Shell Road starts at 2.10pm on Saturday.
