The State Government should consider acquiring Deakin University’s waterfront car park for Geelong’s proposed convention centre, Parliament has heard. Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay asked Planning Minister Richard Wynne whether the Government would explore compulsory acquisition if mediating with Deakin for the site was too difficult. “The G21 Geelong Region Alliance has pointed out that a business case has yet to be finalised for the Geelong convention and exhibition centre, which has held back federal funding commitments,” Mr Ramsay told MPs. “My last question to the Minister in March drew a response stating that Geelong’s planning authority was established to provide advice on major developments, including the merits of a Geelong convention and exhibition centre. “With $5.5 million allocated in the budget to the Geelong Authority, it is now time to see some sign of progress for this vital project. “The question I ask the Minister is: would he consider compulsory acquisition of the Deakin University Waterfront campus car park if an agreement cannot be reached with the City of Greater Geelong and Deakin University to move this project along on the preferred site?” The Indy reported last month that South Barwon MP Andrew Katos had told Deakin University to make a decision on its extensive waterfront holdings. Geelong nurse Kimberly Rice has three simple words to fight bowel cancer: “Take the kit”. “A simple smear can save your life,” she said. Kimberly dedicated her life to fighting bowel cancer as a theatre nurse after both parents were diagnosed two decades ago. The timing of their diagnoses was the difference between their outcomes, she said. Kimberly was 13 when mum Joan was diagnosed, aged 47, after experiencing lower abdominal pain and a change in bowel habits. Joan saw her GP immediately then had surgery to remove a large section of her bowel. “This was almost 20 years ago and mum’s now considered cured,” Kimberly said. Three years later her father, Keith, noticed bleeding and appetite and weight loss but put off testing. “He said it was nothing to worry about, probably just haemorrhoids,” Kimberly said. “He was absolutely terrified of anything medical.” Keith kept working, failing to visit a GP until seriously unwell. His eventual surgery for bowel cancer was too late. Keith died two weeks later, aged 61. “I never want anyone to go through what we experienced as a family,” Kimberly said. She has now worked as a colorectal theatre nurse for 11 years, assisting daily with bowel cancer surgery. “There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing I was able to make a difference in a person’s life,” Kimberley said. The 33-year-old hoped her story could raise awareness about the preventable cancer. Continued page 5

Crims target rego plates across Geelong suburbs Stolen number plates account for 40 per cent of thefts from motor vehicles around Geelong in recent weeks, according to police. And the thieves show little concern for their victim’s social status, with the city’s most and least-affluent suburbs the worst for number-plate theft, police posted on Facebook this week. The thefts follow a report in last week’s Indy of ongoing drive-offs from Geelong service stations, with stolen plates commonly used on offenders’ vehicles. Thefts of number plates had been around the 40 per cent rate over “many weeks” in Geelong, Leading Senior Constable Andrew King posted on Wednesday.
“Number plates are being stolen from various locations however multiple incidents continue to occur in suburbs including Corio, Geelong West/ Newtown, Whittington/Newcomb and Highton. Both sets of number plates were stolen on all occasions except two.” Police have noted the use of stolen plates in servo drive-offs as well as burglaries, drug-trafficking and to avoid speeding and parking fines. Police tips to avoid plate thefts include fixing number plates with one-way, anti-theft screws and parking only in illuminated areas or in locked garages. Ldg Sen Const King identified night as prime time for general theft from motor vehicles around
Geelong, with residential streets and carports “the most popular locations”. “Over half the incidents recorded the mode of entry as being ‘nil visible force’. Tools and cash are targeted.” Thieves were also stealing cars from “numerous suburbs” including Geelong, Newcomb, Corio and North Geelong, Ldg Sen Const King posted. “Over a third of all vehicles stolen were stolen as a result of additional offences occurring. (Twelve) vehicles were located/recovered, with the highest number being located in Corio and others spread throughout various suburbs.”
Replacement for 'ripped up' Lone Pine cheers RSL A memorial tree descendant of Gallipoli’s Lone Pine has been “ripped from its bed” at Torquay’s Centenary Garden of Remembrance, according to the town’s RSL. The disappearance of the tree had “dismayed” members because it was a memorial to Australians who fought and died near the original Lone Pine, the branch said. “The Lone Pine is particularly admired as a memorial as it is a living reminder of the awful time Australians had in Turkey at that time,” said branch vice-president Kevin Egan. “We hope whoever removed the previous Lone Pine will respect this beautiful war memorial tree and realise how important the tree is to veterans’ families and all ex-service people.” The tree came from a small plantation of pines taken from cuttings of the tree at Gallipoli. The Turkish peninsula on which the Lone Pine stood was the site of several battles during the Gallipoli campaign. The plantation now supplies Lone Pines for commemorative sites around Australia. Torquay RSL member Maurie Dale and wife Meryl donated the missing pine as a “small tree” last year. On Thursday the RSL planted its “much larger” replacement, also a donation from the Dales. Mr Egan urged the community to visit the new Lone Pine “to appreciate it as a memorial to WW1 servicemen and their families”. “The Lone Pine Tree is particularly admired as a memorial as it is a living reminder of the awful time Australians had in Turkey at that time. “We hope whoever removed the previous Lone Pine will respect this beautiful war memorial tree and realise how important the tree is to veterans’ families and all ex-service people.”
In Brief Insult apology Premier Daniel Andrews has personally apologised to South Barwon Liberal MP Andrew Katos for making fun of his weight in State Parliament. Mr Katos said he thanked Mr Andrews for his apology and hoped he understood “that preaching about respect and anti-bullying means little if he fails to lead by example”.
Death charges Police have charged a man in relation to the death of a 79-year-old neighbour who had been allegedly bashed and stabbed when fire-fighters pulled him from his burning home. The 45-year-old was remanded in custody to appear in court on Monday to answer charges of arson, aggravated burglary, conduct endangering life, recklessly causing serious injury and assault with a weapon.
Scour saved A $1 million grant will preserve an historic wool-scouring building on the banks of the Barwon River at Breakwater, the State Government has announced. The 149-year-old Sunnyside Wool Scour needed urgent stabilisation work to “make it safe to occupy in the future so that more people can appreciate (its) history”, the Government said.
Neville promoted Bellarine MP Lisa Neville will keep law and order “front and centre of the government’s agenda” after her appointment as Victorian Police Minister, according to Premier Daniel Andrews. Ms Neville, who will retain her water portfolio, accepted the job in a ministerial reshuffle following the return of former police minister Wade Noonan after several months off due to personal issues.
Wheel wins Two more American supercars will sport lightweight wheels from a high-tech Geelong manufacturer, a motoring website has reported. GM’s William Rogers confirmed top-of-theline Camaros and Corvettes would use Carbon Revolution wheels following Ford’s adoption of the Geelong product for its Mustang Shelby GT350R.
Hello, ALDI
RESTORED: Torquay RSL's Ian Gilbank, Peter Doyle, Maurie Dale and Kevin Egan plant the replacement Lone Pine.
An ALDI supermarket chain could greet visitors to Torquay after the company lost its bid to set up shop on a site overlooking the start of the Great Ocean Road. Councillors agreed this week to seek a planning scheme amendment to instead allow an ALDI store to face Surf Coast Hwy from an industrial estate on the northern side of the town.

Convention plans for uni’s car park
Parties devote attention to marginal Corangamite
From page 1 “It’s either ‘Yes, we’re interested’ or ‘No’, and if it’s no we can go away and look at other sites,” Mr Katos told the Indy. “It’s time for Deakin to give clarity to the situation. We’ve waited long enough.” A Geelong Chamber of Commerce briefing two weeks ago told federal shadow treasurer Chris Bowen that the Deakin car park was the only viable option for the convention centre. Mr Bowen heard that Deakin was “digging its heels in” over negotiations for the site. Deakin has announced plans to develop student accommodation on its waterfront land holdings but has declined to confirm whether it would be on the car park site. Geelong has been lobbying for a convention and exhibition centre since the 1950s. The latest push, which began more than 10 years ago, has struggled to deliver the centre without an appropriate available site. Bellarine MP and Andrews Government minister Lisa Neville proposed after the last state election to swap Deakin’s car park site for City Hall’s Busport building in Brougham Street to allow development of the convention centre on the waterfront.
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The marginal seat of Corangamite has been winning in the visiting politician stakes so far in this election. Incumbent Liberal MP Sarah Henderson squired Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull from Anglesea to Waurn Ponds as a busload of Canberra press gallery reporters shadowing his carefully stage-managed appearances. He announced $5 million for Anam Cara House and $60 million for the third round of the Federal Government’s mobile black spots program. Mr Turnbull revelled in the environment at Carbon Revolution, gleefully lofting a lightweight one-piece carbon wheel overhead during his Tuesday 24 May visit. “This is a great example of what we are going to see a lot more of with our innovation and science agenda,” he said. “Collaboration between our smartest minds, our universities, Deakin Uni in this case, collaborating with industry.” Employment Minister Michaelia Cash arrived on Thursday, again with Ms Henderson in tow, to visit King’s Cars at Waurn Ponds to push the Government’s new youth employment program, PaTH. That path to electoral recognition was also being followed by Liberal candidate for Corio, Richard Lange. Mr Lange, a business and marketing manager for food manufacturing and agribusinesses, said funding announcements were part of politicking. “Promises are one thing, delivery is another,” Mr Lange said. “That’s why I’m backing the Turnbull Liberal government’s $840 million youth employment
HANDS ON THE WHEEL: Sarah Henderson and Malcolm Turnbull at Carbon Revolution. plan PaTH, which is so important to the families of Corio. “This program directly targets jobs for youth which is running at almost 30 per cent unemployment in the northern suburbs. “I’m running a campaign focused on Making Corio Matter because Corio, from Lara to St Leonards, has been taken for granted for far too long by an MP who is never in his electorate. “I will be a strong, full-time voice for Corio in Canberra as part of Malcolm Turnbull’s team.” Opposition leader Bill Shorten promised $1 million to plan for the duplication of the rail line between Waurn Ponds and South Geelong, sup-

porting Labor’s Corangamite candidate Libby Coker. He also pledged $7.5 million to help the city’s car industry workers who are facing redundancy. Jenny Macklin, shadow minister for families and payments and disability reform, visited Geelong on Thursday to call for the Turnbull government to match Labor’s commitment for a National Redress Scheme for child sex abuse survivors. A spokesperson for Corio MP Richard Marles pointed to his achievements in gaining infrastructure funding for Geelong as well as the northern suburbs’ GROW jobs program.
“You never hear about it but it’s the second highest cancer. People think bowel cancer is an old person’s disease but we’re also treating people in their 20s and 30s.” Ninety per cent of bowel cancers could be cured if detected early, Kimberly said. She urged readers to buy Rotary’s Bowelscan screening kits for $15, including return postage, at local pharmacies. The simple, non-invasive kit could be used at home, said Kimberly, who screens herself annually.

Double Take Premier Daniel Andrews’ reshuffle of his ministry this week resulted in local member for Bellarine Lisa Neville handling two portfolios that normally wouldn’t relate to each other. Previously holding the water portfolio, she added police minister to her job description, leaving her with a juxtaposition of titles that read “Water Police”. Just as long as Geelong’s police numbers don’t get watered down any further.
1220614-HM13-16
Another media release from the office of Premier Daniel Andrews must have been dictated, or so it appears. Or perhaps it was a case of that sneaky auto-correct function imposing itself when least welcome. The release concerned the appointment of administrators to Geelong council, declaring that appointee Peter Dorling was “a director of the Victorian Regional Panels Authority”. Google was unable to come up with such an organisation - but it did manage to ask: “Did you mean: Victorian Regional Channels Authority?” Come to think of it, Geelong could use a regional panels authority - we do seem to have a lot of bingles. There’s a grumpy old man (or woman) out East Geelong way venting his views on Geelong’s increasingly snarled traffic. Taped to a traffic light pole at the intersection of Boundary Road and Bellarine Highway was a reminder of his particular frustration. “Geelong, keep left if not really overtaking. It’s the law. Signed, old and grumpy,” said the
home printed sign (pictured). Double Take wonders whether he can spread a few signs out along Ballarat Road as well. Bit of gender confusion in one of the regular Victoria Police news updates this week. The alert was about a person wanted on an outstanding warrant with police appealing for public assistance. The 19-year-old apparently failed to appear at court so investigators released an image in the hope “someone may recognise her or have information on his current whereabouts”. The name of the wanted person, Chanel Davison, didn’t give away any clues, either, but the alert finally decided she was female. Another court no-show caused amusement for different reasons on a Geelong police Facebook page this week. The page included a post seeking information on the whereabouts of Shane Michael Adams, 32, of no fixed address, with a rather uncomplimentary picture of the bloke in question. Well, at least one Facebooker knew the location of Mr Adams. “I missed court so what no big deal you all should get a life,” the man himself commented under the police post. “That’s OK Shane, come back to court and we are more than happy to fix that up for you,” responded police. At this point our man on the run was at least smart enough to end the conversation.

Geelong’s mayor from Melbourne State introduces new ‘councillors’ Geelong’s new “mayor” is a woman from Melbourne who previously served as the city’s council chief, the Andrews Government has announced. Dr Kathy Alexander has joined two other experienced bureaucrats as City of Greater Geelong administrators who will act as Geelong’s council for the next 17 months. Their appointment follows the Government sacking the previous 13-member council last month. A three-month Commission of Inquiry recommended the termination, largely over bullying allegations. The government named former Committee for Geelong executive director Peter Dorling and Metropolitan Planning Authority deputy chair Laurinda Gardner as the other two administrators. City Hall said Dr Alexander would earn $258,610 for a minimum three days a week working “physically” in Geelong. Her colleagues would earn $135,464 each for a minimum two days weekly at City Hall. “The appointment of the administrators is about returning good governance to the people of Geelong and a safe working environment to council staff,” said Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins. “Geelong deserves to have a competent and productive elected council but first the administrators must get in and fix the serious problems the Commission of Inquiry uncovered.” Dr Alexander would “fulfil the role of mayor” as chair of the administrators, the government said. She was City of Melbourne CEO for six years and most recently held the same position at the body governing Victoria’s royal children’s and women’s hospitals. The Government recently appointed Mr Dorling to its Geelong Authority for overseeing development of the central city area but he will step down to take on the administrator role.
THREE AMIGOES: Geelong council administrators Laurinda Gardner, Dr Kathy Alexander and Peter Dorling at their swearing-in ceremony this week.

Two out of three from Melbourne ain’t bad, says chair By JUSTIN FLYNN City Hall’s new chairwoman is unconcerned that two of the council’s three new administrators live outside the municipality. Dr Kathy Alexander was sworn in on Wednesday with fellow Melbourne resident Laurinda Gardner and Barwon Heads’ Peter Dorling to fill the roles of mayor and councillors until the next scheduled council election in October 2017.
“We hear the voice of the community,” Dr Alexander said after the swearing-in ceremony. “Whilst I am not a local, I will be down here three days a week. “It’s a big priority for me to ensure we have an effective strategy and to maximise the opportunity for people to have their say. “Geelong is an asset of the state and is a very important city for the state of Victoria.” One of the trio’s first big decisions would be approving the City’s budget, Dr Alexander said.
“Balancing the competing demands of any budget is challenging at the best of times as there will never be enough money to fund everything at once.” Mr Dorling thanked interim administrator Yehudi Blacher for his work since the previous council was sacked in April. “Yehudi made a great start for us in terms of helping to return public confidence and stability to the City,” Mr Dorling said.

Rescue bid for rare plant
Target drags the profit line lower
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Relocatating Target’s head office from Geelong and disappointing sale results will slash $1.3 billion from the retailer’s return to parent company Wesfarmers. The group revealed this week that the writedown of its Target business, mainly on goodwill, reflected the lower value of the discount department store. Target’s restructuring costs and provisions would add another $145 million to the bill, Wesfarmers added. The restructuring costs includes about $30 million for the 240 head office redundancies and relocation, $35 million to streamline the supply chain and $80 million in inventory write-downs to clear old stock, rationalise the range and delete unwanted products. Target is expected to declare a significant loss, expected to be as much as $50 million, after sales declined against lower margins. Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder said the group believed in doing what was right for the long term future of its businesses. “We have never shied away from taking tough action in the short term if that is what is required,” Mr Goyder said. “The decisions reflect more difficult market conditions but we remain confident that operationally we have the right plans to improve future performances over time. “Whilst Target has made operational progress in recent years, market competition and disruption has continued to accelerate, including from the very strong performance of Kmart. “Within this context, the group created the new Department Stores division with a mandate to deliver a higher long term earnings outcome for the overall division. “Under Guy Russo’s leadership, the new management team has completed a detailed assessment of business opportunities and begun revising strategic plans, which will include greater property co-ordination as well as accelerating activity in Target to ensure that it has the best foundation possible on which to build future success.”
A rescue bid is under way to save a threatened species whose last but best hotspots are in the Geelong region. The vulnerable velvet daisy-bush exists in small populations on public and private land across greater Geelong, Golden Plains and the Surf Coast. Trust for Nature Corangamite regional manager Chris Lindorff said Anglesea and the Brisbane Ranges shared three “broad hotspots”. “The Brisbane Ranges is the main spot. If that is lost it means the loss 50 per cent of the planting population,” Mr Lindorff said. “In some areas the number of plants is down from 100 to 25 and they’re struggling.” The State Government provided a grant of $61,700 to Trust for Nature and the Arthur Rylah Institute to carry out a critical assessment and protection of the plant. “Almost all populations are severely impacted by browsing of wallabies, rabbits or hares, with some populations in urgent need of protection to prevent extinction,” Mr Lindorff said. “Many populations contain only very old plants that are not reproducing.” Mr Lindorff said other threats included competition with weeds coupled with small population sizes increasing the risk of local extinctions. “Some plants that successfully flower have been known to produce non-viable seed so the plants are not reproducing at a rate that sustains populations.” Mr Lindorff said knowledge about velvet daisybush populations, including information about existing population sizes, their health and threats, was limited. Mr Lindorff said the plant grew and flowered well in suburban gardens. “We’re also trying to raise awareness of our threatened species. “With the velvet daisy-bush, people can see it if they’re walking through the Anglesea heath or Ironbark Basin or might find other populations. “We’d love people to take an interest and grow some in their backyard. A number of nurseries can provide plants.”

MALCOLM TURNBULL. WHY SHOULD WE SUPPORT YOU IF YOU WON’T SUPPORT OUR KIDS? Traditional jobs in Australia are disappearing every day – fast. If Victorian kids don’t get the education they’ll need for future jobs, they won’t have a future. Malcolm Turnbull knows this, yet he’s cutting $950 million of Gonski funding for Victorian schools. That funding is urgently needed to ensure every child can get the skills essential for their future.
THE JOBS OUR KID GET TOMORROW W S DEPEND ON WHAT ILL TH LEARN TODAY. EY
If Victorian schools lose Gonski funding now, thousands of Victorian kids will get left behind forever.

Grammar caught up in union case
A project to protect one of the Bellarine Peninsula’s most important freshwater wetlands has honoured the memory of a man who helped formulate the initiative. Drysdale’s Roger Lavingdale played a key role in the upgrade of Lake Lorne Reserve, City Hall’s Will Tieppo said. “Roger was very influential in the initial stages leading up to the preparation of the Lake Lorne Reserve master plan, bringing the vision of establishing a pathway network and stronger conservation focus to our attention.” A plaque at the reserve would acknowledge his contribution, Mr Tieppo said. Community groups and residents joined forces with City Hall to deliver the upgrade of the reserve, habitat for a variety of rare and threatened bird species. The works included construction of a gravel pathway around the lake, a new board-
walk, seating and fencing. “We have now constructed a new pathway network around the lake, to be utilised by Drysdale and Clifton Springs residents and, of course, visitors to the region as they step off the Bellarine Tourist Railway,” Mr Tieppo said. “Local schools are already using the reserve for environmental studies and Waterwatch activities. “There’s also new seating and fencing around the lake. New interpretative signs are to be installed later in the year. “The support by the local community to this project has been fantastic and we are proud to deliver a great outcome.” City Hall also thanked members of Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association, Bellarine Tourist Railway, Vic Track Drysdale Rotary Club and Geelong Field Naturalists Club.

FWBC director Nigel Hadgkiss said right-ofentry provisions in the Fair Work Act were designed to provide permit holders access to worksites to carry out genuine business in the interest of workers. “Right-of-entry is not an excuse to go on to a building site and tell a head-contractor who can and can’t perform work on the site,” Mr Hadgkiss said. The CFMEU claimed Mr Hadgkiss was operating at the behest of the Liberal party. The behaviour of Mr Hadgkiss was extraordinarily inappropriate for the head of a government regulator, said national CFMEU construction secretary Dave Noonan. “The FWBC have been running a highly political campaign against the union at the behest of the Liberal Government in order to beef up support for the return of the ABCC,” he said.
Refugee appeal closing in on $70K A crowd-funding campaign seeking donations to help asylum seekers in Geelong apply for protection visas has raised more than 70 per cent of its $70,000 target. Project co-ordinator Marijana Graljuk said there were around 300 asylum seekers in Geelong
who had fled a country where they risked or experienced torture and persecution. The funding is for interpreters, to work alongside volunteers and help with visa applications. The crowd funding campaign at pozible.com/ seekingrefuge is open until 31 May.

HONOURED: Roger Lavingdale's son Heath and wife Meryn lead a walk along the new path at Lake Lorne Reserve on Sunday.
Union official Brendan Murphy faces Federal Court action over an allegation he illegally closed down a Geelong Grammar School construction site. Fair Work Building and Construction (FWBC) alleges the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) organiser breached right-of-entry provisions at the worksite in December 2014. In its statement of claim, FWBC alleged Mr Murphy entered the construction site inside the school grounds saying he wanted a discussion with workers. FWNC alleged the site manager repeatedly asked Mr Murphy to present his rightof-entry permit but he refused. “When the site manager said he would have to call police if Mr Murphy did not produce an entry permit, Mr Murphy responded by saying: ‘Go ahead’ and ‘You know better than that’,“ The FWNC claim said. “Mr Murphy then proceeded to conduct a meeting with workers and told them that he was closing the site down. “The workers that attended the meeting then ceased work and left the site for the remainder of the day. As a result, works scheduled for that day were not completed. “By closing down the site, Mr Murphy hindered and obstructed the head contractor and sub-contractors engaged on the site.”

770 jobs coming through pipeline About 770 new local farming jobs are a step closer after the completion of a pipeline to a developing food production precinct near Geelong, according to a federal MP. The pipeline, completed on Friday, was stage one of the $11.8 million Golden Plains Food Production and Employment Precinct at Inverleigh, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said. The 4000-hectare precinct would “unlock” $160 million in regional investment and create the 770 jobs over the next decade as a “boon for the local and state economy”, she said. The 18km pipe would give the food precinct’s farmers and producers a reliable supply of water so they could “plan their production with certainty”. “The installation of a pump station and supporting infrastructure has drawn on the skills of many residents and I am delighted to see the ongoing job creation over the next 10 years,” Ms Henderson said. Golden Plains mayor Des Phelan said the project was one of the most exciting on record for the shire. “Agriculture is Golden Plains Shire’s largest industry sector, making up 26 per cent of the local workforce. Our farmers contribute significantly
to Victoria’s primary produce supply, producing four million eggs, 600,000 chickens, 1000 pigs and 28,000 litres of goat milk each week,” Cr Phelan said. “The Golden Plains Food Production Precinct, when completed, will not only support the growth of intensive agriculture in the shire - it will generate $160 million for the local economy and create hundreds of jobs over time. “It’s important for the council to support existing primary producers and create opportunities for those of the future and the Golden Plains Food Production Precinct will do just that. The new pipeline will supply town water into the precinct, enabling investment and expansion of intensive agriculture in Golden Plains Shire, creating significantly increased economic output for the shire, the wider region and the state.” The shire, Federal Government, Barwon Water and State Government have made respective funding commitments to the project of $1.23 million, $4.17 million, $3.44 million and $2.94 million. Stage two’s installation of water infrastructure would commence when demand for supplies reached a “stipulated capacity”, the shire said.

The lighter side of headlines As I read, a ferry is on a trial run from Werribee to Docklands (Geelong Indy, 13 May). A Portarlington ferry would have to stop at Geelong, then Werribee, then berth at Melbourne and sit idle to cater for tourists to cover costs. A 400-seat cat-type ferry is big. The costs don’t seem to add up, so who will pick up the tab? The heading on the following page ‘Cash crisis hits homeless’ should have been on the front page to wake up the pollies. In the same edition I read that Darryn Lyons might run for a federal seat although he has just been sacked. Did I read this wrong? Also, work has begun on a new $120 million WorkSafe head office building, plus all the other costs to fit it out. Don’t people think what’s behind the headlines and who is paying for all this? I feel a lot lighter getting this all out. Russ Jones St Leonards
Put Avalon on election agenda Given the stakes, it was better late than never to read Avalon Airport chief Justin Giddings’ admission that Hong Kong airline Hainan’s memorandum of understanding plans were jettisoned due to governance red tape and a lack of political will (Geelong Indy, 20 May). Ironically, but equally of no surprise, came news last week that the Andrews Government had abandoned plans for the rail spur to the airport. So what brought about Geelong’s incremental bundling into little more than an outer-metropolitan political non-entity with related peanutsand-monkeys scenarios and outcomes being the order of the day? Certainly in Avalon’s case a safe ALP seat and a hardly inspiring nor effective MP haven’t helped, nor have underwhelming advocacy groups G21, Committee for Geelong and Geelong Chamber of Commerce. Yet it’s practically impossible not to surmise that Melbourne Airport Corporation lobbying of state and federal governments hasn’t played a role in white-anting Avalon’s international potential. Now that Mr Giddings has gone public on how federal bureaucracy “killed” international carrier aspirations, one praises him for his candour. Hopefully he’ll continue to stand up in a tackle
tend Mrs Henderson’s next forum, I was informed about PSOs and other alleged resources that had nothing to do with troops actually on the ground and patrolling our streets and suburbs. Federal Member for Corio Richard Marles has also been challenged to attend. Geelong seriously needs some serious policing, about which last week’s meeting left no doubt. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Police Minister must clean up own backyard New Police Minister Lisa Neville has failed to make her own electorate feel safe in her term as Member for Bellarine. My survey of thousands of Bellarine residents last month showed that 97 per cent of respondents were concerned about rising crime rates. The same amount identified a need for more police on the beat. Communities in Ms Neville’s own backyard are living in fear but she still refuses to support CCTV funding, which they have begged for as a response to the region’s stretched police resources. For almost a year we’ve seen residents of Drysdale calling out for CCTV and security grants. Barwon Heads has been forced to form its own Neighbourhood Watch group. Statistics show that crime is rising across the Bellarine because of the State Government’s soft approach and Ms Neville’s lack of action. Drysdale has experienced a 400 per cent increase in assaults since 2012 and thefts are up 150 per cent at Ocean Grove compared to 2013. Meanwhile, Ms Neville happily welcomed $250,000 for CCTV to protect penguins at St Kilda (Geelong Indy, 15 April).
NEWS
City’s hidden staff costs Regarding City of Greater Geelong staff benefits, it has been reported that salaries and wages are 43 per cent of operating expenditure. But ratepayers and others might be unaware of other benefits applying to the City’s 2700 employees - child-minding expenses, a benevolent fund, superannuation, waived bank fees, free training in many areas, long-service leave, vehicles for private use in some positions including fuel, travel kilometres paid for, paid sick leave, vacation pay, rostered days off and flexi-time, pay loading on public holidays, uniforms, expense accounts in some positions, flexible short-notice time off, and specified items required for work or training in some positions. The will probably leave self-employed ratepayers and others gobsmacked, along with private sector employees. So, folks, what do the City’s staff actually cost ratepayers? W Boyd Geelong West
PENGUINS FIRST: Police Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville. I thought she might be campaigning to become Victoria’s first minister for penguins but Daniel Andrews instead decided she was fit to be Police Minister despite neglecting her own electorate’s crime issues. Hopefully she will now be forced to take notice of what is happening in her own neighbourhood and make the Bellarine a safer place to live. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria
Green theory in the wars
The almost-full house was livid at neighbourhoods no longer safe enough even to walk the dog at night. A couple of longstanding myths were debunked, too. A retired police officer stated that security cameras protect no one and only serve as an afterthe-fact means of identifying perpetrators. He also said that police had more resources in the 1970s. Given the spate of recent crime events, the presence of one police car patrolling Geelong at night is inexcusably poor form for both State Government and Victoria Police. Having challenged Labor Member for Geelong Christine Couzens over the issue and to at-
and maintain the rage because a fully operational Avalon passenger and fresh food export hub to Asian markets remains the biggest game in the region in terms of real jobs creation. There’s still adequate time pre the 2 July poll to demand a rethink from the major parties and responsible input from the Greens and independents and for Avalon to be adjudicated upon accordingly across both electorates. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Locals livid at cop shortage Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson’s community forum last week on crime in Geelong was a surprise.
Leigh Adamson’s plan to stop drought and wars in the Middle East by voting Green (Letters, 20 May) was highly imaginative but not backed by rational argument. His claim that “Australians are crying out for bold action”, presumably by reducing CO2 emissions, was contradicted by a CSIRO opinion survey finding last November that 54.2 per cent of Australians did not believe in man-made climate change. The only people in favour of Mr Adamson’s position are a minority few who want inefficient, expensive renewables that will have not the slightest effect on the weather, not to mention wars. Pathways beyond school Creating positive futures is the key message being given to students at Newcomb Secondary College as they embark on their new P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) Program starting in 2017. Supported by both the Federal Government and the Skilling Australia Foundation, the PTECH program, launched at the beginning of 2016, is only one of two programs offered in Australia. It is an innovative education model that will give students the opportunity to study their VCE/VCAL subjects while at the same time study an industry supported certificate in pathways such as health, information technology and business/finance.
Newly formed partnerships with Barwon Health, Bendigo Bank, GMHBA, Opteon Property Group and Tribal Campus will provide students with the opportunity to engage with the real world of work and have a better understanding of their choice for a post school pathway. This collaboration between local industry representatives and the staff at Newcomb Secondary College will enhance the connection between student learning and the skills employers need for jobs of the future - jobs that may not exist today! Recently students had the opportunity to visit all five industry partners to see these organisations in full operation.
Exciting times are ahead at Newcomb Secondary College. Core Skills for Work will continue to be included in the curriculum and as the year progresses each student involved in the P-TECH program will be paired with an industry mentor to work with. Graduates from the P-TECH program will
have so many more career options as Newcomb Secondary College continues to break new ground with this program. Newcomb Secondary College is at 81-85 Bellarine Highway, Newcomb. Phone 5248 1400.

Bunyip is up for firey end By LUKE VOOGT
Festival followers cry out for Celtic By JUSTIN FLYNN
A monstrous bunyip will emerge from the darkness at Corio’s Cloverdale Community Centre tomorrow night. The three-metre sculpture - created by artists Daniele Poidomani and Mark Cuthbertson - will dominate Cloverdale’s Night of the Bunyip before being ritually immolated. Project manager Sue Hartigan said the project was a first for the artists. “Most of the artwork they create has a longer lifespan,” she said. “They don’t often make stuff to be set alight.” Wadawarrung elder Uncle Bryon Powell will begin the night - the climax of Cloverdale’s Autumn Festival - with a traditional smoking ceremony. The centre will then unleash the bunyip, which Apollo Bay pyrotechnician Dani Cox will burn to ash in a fireworks display. Daniele Poidomani constructed the reptilian sculpture at Foundation 61’s workshop at Mount Duneed. He based the sculpture on indigenous stories of water-dwelling bunyips, which, according to myth, emerged at night to terrorise - and sometimes devour - people near waterways. The Melbourne puppeteer has an international reputation for creating large puppets for events such as the Woodford Folk Festival. “This is the first time I have created a large sculpture destined to be destroyed by fire,” he said. Meanwhile, Norlane artist Esther KoningsOakes conducted community workshops this month to create effigies inspired by bunyips and other nocturnal creatures. The local residents will throw their effigies on the bunyip bonfire in their own tribute to the myths of the night. Konings-Oakes will conduct a final worshop at 10am tomorrow at Cloverdale for residents wanting to contribute an effigy.
DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU: Nathan Oakes, Esther Konings-Oakes, Daniele Poidomani, Mark Cuthbertson and Sue Hartigan with Cloverdale Community Centre’s resident bunyip.
A little bit of Celtic is in everyone, whether or not it runs through the veins. This year’s National Celtic Festival, widely regard as the Southern Hemisphere’s largest, will again allow patrons to express their inner-Celt with an impressive array of entertainment and activities at Portarlington on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Not only does the festival stimulate the local economy during a traditionally quiet time of year, it brings people together. “We try to promote the region,” festival director Una McAlinden said. “We bring people to the region who are only here because of us. Portarlington and the coastal areas are full in summer and we are a welcome relief to lots of the businesses in winter.” Organisers are expecting a crowd of 15,000 over the duration of the festival. Included in this year’s musical acts are former Australian Idol favourite Damien Leith and popular band Talisk, which is fresh from its 2015 BBC Radio Two Young Folk Award. “They’re the big thing in Scotland and Europe at the moment,” Ms McAlinden said. Acclaimed singer Marcia Howard will also perform. The festival’s large array of free workshops will cover everything from limerick writing to bagpipe playing. Patrons won’t need to buy a ticket to browse the market stalls. Full of Celtic crafts and goodies, the stalls will also offer a variety of foods and fresh local produce. Set among the market will be the festival’s Village Stage which will give a taste of the event’s musical program for free. The festival runs from 10 to 13 June, with all venues under cover and heated.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Plenty to love at festival Winter in Aireys Inlet will warm up this year with the town’s fifth annual festival bringing an eclectic range of events and activities to the coast from June to August. Festival co-ordinator Anne Dansick said the bumper program for this year’s Love Winter in Aireys festival contained a record 24 events and activities. Kicking off on 3 June with Aireys Biggest Morning Tea, the festival promises entertainment for visitors and locals every week throughout winter. The program includes the popular Winter Ball at Fairhaven Surf Club, Wintersong at the Aireys Pub and the intimate Danny Spooner Afternoon House Concert at Cimarron. With a local tennis tournament, trivia nights and literary gatherings, the Love Winter in Aireys festival presents community events across a wide range of genres. “We are thrilled with the number and range of events scheduled for this winter because there is something on the program for everyone,” Dansick said. “We launch this year’s festival at The Captain of Aireys with Aireys Biggest Morning Tea, an important fund-raiser for the Cancer Council and a terrific gathering for many people throughout the community. “The festival continues through June with activities for tourists, such as the Split Point Lighthouse Express Tours and Aireys Market Foodie Day. “There are also events that might appeal more to locals, like Wear Artrageous at the Aireys Hall and Under the Influence of Words at the Aireys Pub.” This year’s extensive program also features book launches, wellbeing and yoga workshops, live music, artist trails, international food and a family movie night at the pub. The Aireys Inlet arm of Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) will present two engaging events
THANK YOU VERY MUCH: Mark Anthony in Elvis mode.
Elvis tribute has the right moves
THAT’S ARTRAGEOUS: One of the fun activities at the Love Winter in Aireys festival. on the program including the popular Aireysistable extravaganza evening of music, dance and food and a refugee author event at Great Escape Books. Prominent human rights lawyer Julian Burnside will appear at a dinner organised by the Aireys Inlet Uniting Church.
“We’re thrilled to have such diversity and events that educate as well as entertain,” Dansick said. For all event details and bookings, visit the Aireys Inlet website at aireysinlet.org.au and check Facebook for regular updates and news.
Too much Elvis is never enough if the audience response to the stream of tribute artists is any indication. But the man considered to be the best of them all will bring his show to Geelong direct from a sold out national tour. Australia’s premier Elvis artist Mark Anthony relives the great hits of the king of rock ‘n’ roll in his 2016 tour If I Can Dream. Anthony promised his new two-hour international concert experience recreated the essence and all the magical hits that inspired and shook the world. Elvis’s number-one hits are performed in the original style that made Elvis the great performer he was. Those hits such as Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t be Cruel, Hound Dog, All Shook Up, Teddy Bear, Jailhouse Rock, Stuck on You, It’s Now or Never, Wooden Heart, Surrender, Return To Sender and many more will all be there. Elvis had more than 600 million record sales worldwide and was a three-time Grammy award winner, but his untimely death robbed a generation of his concert experience. Anthony said he strives to recreate the experience of The King live in concert. Anthony appears at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 4 June.

What’sat on
The addition of Borgata to Lara’s growing restaurant scene will help put the town on Geelong’s food map. With chef and proprietor of 44 years’ experience behind it in Piero Volpe, Borgata aims to create a wonderful atmosphere with high standard service presenting authentic Italian cuisine. “There will be no need to travel to Geelong. Lara can live and eat local,” Piero enthuses. Borgata, translating simply as “suburban” will be a little slice of Italy, located within the expanded Lara Village. “Working beside many talented European chefs, we have developed the culinary skills to prepare an exceptional meal and a keen eye for the flavours that we know patrons will enjoy,” Piero says.

$40.02 PW Jeep Renegade 2WD combines rugged looks with urban convenience.
Retro Renegade By ALISTAIR KENNEDY THE Jeep Renegade is principally targeting the blossoming 2WD soft-road SUV market. While Renegade isn’t the company’s first venture into the 2WD market it certainly beats its two predecessors, Compass and Patriot. Externally there’s no doubt the Renegade is a Jeep with that iconic square styling and seven-slot grille. Inside the Renegade there are plenty of reminders of Jeep’s WWII origins with a little silhouette on the side of the windscreen and “Since 1941” above the multimedia touchscreen. The Renegade’s tall shape provides good interior space, with plenty of headroom at both front and rear. There’s good legroom for adults in the rear seats although its narrow width effectively makes it the same two-adult/ three-children proposition as its competitors. At 351 litres the luggage space is acceptable. The rear seatbacks fold flat in three sections, allowing load-through in the centre with the front passenger seat also folding flat to allow for even longer items to be carried. There’s also a dual floor setup for hiding items where necessary and a space-saver spare wheel beneath. There is a very un-American 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine powering three of the four 2WD models. A Fiat MultiAir2 unit, the 1.4 generates 103 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed DDCT (Dual Dry Clutch Transmission) automatic. The entry level Renegade Sport, also 2WD, has a 1.6-litre Etorq naturally-aspirated 81 kW and 152 Nm petrol engine with a five-speed manual gearbox. In line with its greater off-road ambitions, Jeep Renegade Trailhawk has a 2.4-litre petrol engine with 129 kW of power and 230 Nm of torque and drives through a nine-speed automatic. Diesels are offered in some markets but the Australian importer says there’s little demand for these in this class so has no plans to import them. All Renegade models come with seven airbags; ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; stability and traction control; electronic rollover mitigation; reversing camera; daytime running lights; and IsoFix child seat brackets. The mid-spec Longitude adds blind spot monitoring; automatic headlights; front foglights; and rear parking sensors while the Limited also gets bi-xenon headlights. All 2WD Renegades have a stop/start fuel saving system. Sport and Longitude models have a five-inch touchscreen display with the Limited getting 6.5 inches with the inclusion of satellite navigation. Limited also gets a seven-inch colour instrument display in front of the driver cluster that can be personalised to suit and a higher quality nine-

speaker BeatsAudio sound system. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming is standard with USB and auxiliary sockets conveniently placed above a smartphone-sized pocket at the bottom of the dashboard. Wheels sizes rise progressively from 16-inch in the two Sport models to 17-inch in the Longitude and 18-inch in the Limited. Extra comfort features include two-step lumbar support in the Longitude and Limited with the latter also getting leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel. Our test was in the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol Limited. Entry is easy and the seats are supportive and comfortable with plenty of headroom. External visibility is restricted by large A-pillars that curve into the windscreen as well as by the large camera/sensor housing at the top centre of the windscreen. There is a fair degree of turbo lag on hard acceleration at take-off but once up and running the engine is quiet and refined. The ride is comfortable with good road grip and noise and vibration well subdued. With its boxy body corners need to be negotiated with care but that applies to most SUVs. During our week-long test we averaged 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres, which is about 20 per cent above the listed 5.9 L/100 km but much as we expect from the anomalous testing system. Jeep has reacted to initial criticism of Renegade pricing with reductions, in January 2016, of between $1500 and $2500 together with the option of a $1000 drive-away surcharge on the two Sport models. A driveaway price of $29,000 on-road for the manual Sport is still more than its rivals but not to the extent that it will deter true Jeep lovers looking for the blend of looks, character and capable performance that Renegade provides.

Works scheduled Sat 28 May to Thurs 16 June 2016 Viva Energy Australia intends to invest $350 million in its Geelong refinery over the next five years. $100 million of this investment will be spent this year on major maintenance and upgrade works. These works are designed to continue reliable and efficient operations for the refinery for years to come. The main body of works will be carried out in September and October with smaller preparatory works occurring ahead of that time frame. The first round of works will be carried out from Saturday 28 May to 16 June 2016.
Viva Energy is committed to minimising any impact on the community as a result of these works and been working with the EPA on this project. However, at times and depending on the weather, you may notice some odour or additional noise. This may occur particularly at the beginning and end of the works:

SPORT Licking wounds, Cats look to stare down hard Blues By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Any Geelong supporter who checked the scores at quarter time against Collingwood on Saturday would have let out an audible groan. According to common football sense, that should not have happened. But a collection of factors combined to leave the Cats in a deep hole. Geelong was flat after its emotion-charged 'Dangerfield Cup’ against Adelaide. Most of the midfield was down while Collingwood had the emotional confidence born of a big win the previous week - and a win over Geelong in the pre-season. Plus Geelong’s goal kicking yips surfaced precisely at a time that hurt the side. Just goes to show that common football sense can become uncommon just like normal common sense.
But the cold light of a few days distance from the emotion of the loss reveals that football life goes on. Coach Chris Scott conceded Geelong was off its game. But in all his post-match prognostications, Scott sought to flatten out the roller coaster of one week at a time football. “We aim to be consistent all the way through,” Scott said. “We don’t want to be an emotional team that plays really well when things are going our way and capitulates when they’re not. “We are trying to develop a team that always thinks they’re a chance.” Nevertheless, Scott will be expecting an upward swing in his player’s mood against Carlton in the early game on Sunday at Etihad Stadium. The Blues struggled against ladder leader North Melbourne last week, particularly in attack where they barely mustered a score worthy of half
a game, let alone a competitive four quarters. With the return of Tom Lonergan, Geelong’s defence resumes its normal flexibility, with the added interest of seeing Lachie Henderson up against his old club. The key defender departed Carlton under strained circumstances, sitting out the last three games. No doubt Henderson will receive a warm welcome from former teammates and fans alike but he has been a solid presence in Geelong’s defence this season. Even though Geelong thrashed the Blues last time they met, the games prior to that were close, with Geelong only able to shake a tenacious opposition in the last term. Geelong’s Indigenous Round jumper was designed by past player Nathan Djerrkura, representing the fresh and salt-water people of Arnhem Land.
SCORED: Vito Cichello celebrates a goal for the Warriors. (Live Pixel)
Focused Warriors steady for business end of season By JOSIP ZILIC The halfway mark of the NPL2 West competition has arrived and for North Geelong it paints an interesting picture. Sitting on top of the ladder is just reward for the Warriors, who have licked off the wounds from relegation and largely re-invigorated themselves. Tight defensive work combined with a vast scorer list makes for good reading. However the chasing pack has also stepped up the pressure and closing in, looking to make the second stanza of the year and grand stand finish. This week the Warriors play host to sister club St Albans Saints. Their last encounter ended in a 1-1 draw, a result neither side would accept at this point of the year. St Albans is coming off a grinding 1-2 loss to
fellow promotion aspirant Whittlesea where skipper Ryan McGuffie got on the scoresheet to make for an exciting end to the match. North Geelong came away from their weekend home clash against Ballarat with a fortunate 1-1 draw. There were plenty of good signs from the Warriors' young attacking trio of Nicholas Jurcic, Anthony Banovac and Ante Kozul, who have all been introduced to the starting line-up due to injury, suspension and absences. In the first half, the young forwards toiled well but were too often isolated and without the support of the midfield trio, which provided opportunities for Ballarat to control the tempo on the counter and combine well in their build up. Despite some half chances either way the sides went into the sheds with the score at 0-0 at the break.
The Warriors improved in the second half as the midfield worked closer with it’s forwards and began to lever back some control. The reward came in the 68th minute when Vito Cichello met the end of some slick build up work to pounce on a ball on the edge of the box to slam home for the lead. However, rather than build on the lead the Warriors eased off, sitting very deep, inviting Ballarat to goal, which is exactly what occurred in the 80th minute when Michael Trigger got on the end of a well weighted pass in the box to smash past Daniel Zilic for the leveller. With a returning trio of Matt Thorne, Michael Anderson and Kene Eze it will be interesting to see how coach Micky Colina addresses the lull in performance for the weekend’s blockbuster.
Evening catch at grass beds ON THE BITE Chris Pitman With his sights set on whiting, Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore recently set off from Queenscliff just after sunset. Arriving on the grass beds just left of the harbour, he dropped anchor but after a few tentative bites and the odd whiting decided it was time for a move. Shifting about 100m away made all the difference, with Michael boating numerous double headers of whiting averaging 40cm for a bag-limit haul in no time. Michael said tenderized cuttlefish was the most successful bait. Just around the corner at Swan Bay anglers had little trouble boating bags of squid, even in difficult weather. Peri and Michael Stavropoulos fished inside the Swan Bay channel last Friday night. The gummy sharks failed to eventuate but the pair caught had an unusual capture of a 7.5kg octopus. Corio Bay continued entertaining anglers with pinkie snapper and salmon on soft plastics cast around structure. Some anglers reported marking solid snapper on sounders underneath salmon schools around the grain pier. Chloe Hedditch fished with father Riki in 20m off Breamlea on Saturday when her rod buckled over with a gummy that put up an excellent fight on 7kg tackle. The pair then moved out to 26m where they caught a 78cm snapper while drifting with fresh squid baits. Anglers keen enough to brave wild weather caught some impressive southern bluefin tuna over 100kg down the western district. Schools of smaller tuna to 15kg were found off Portland, with fish taken on small skirted lures. Apollo Bay produced tuna for anglers prepared to cover plenty of water to find them anywhere from Marengo to Cape Otway and further. Freshwater anglers persisted with Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, again banking redfin to 45cm willing on lures cast around weed beds. The odd rainbow trout was taken as by-catch, with some reaching 1.5kg. Lake Bullen Merri began firing up. Anglers trolling hard-body lures caught excellent football-shaped rainbow trout to 2kg. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt, Dylan Pace and Nathan Grass travelled to the Eucumbene River in the Snowy Mountains late last week to experience some of Australia’s finest trout fishing. Walking the banks of the river, they caught numerous well-conditioned brown trout to 3.6kg on glow bug nymph rigs. Some of the most-memorable trout included Adam’s big buck brown that gave an incredible fight in 30cm of water. Nearby at Thredbo River, Bob Hentosz took an excellent condition 3.6kg rainbow on a rapala F7. Andrew Orchard also fished the Thredbo, banking a fantastically conditioned brook trout, also on a hard-body lure. Next week should provide opportunities for a much-needed tuna fix if the weather allows, and with the large barrels pushing further east we might again seem them in our own backyard. Whiting anglers should continue focussing on Queenscliff though to St Leonards with fresh squid as bait.

from the homes of its unpaid volunteers. GAR also works with other animal services such as Geelong Animal Welfare Society. Just like people, pets can suffer during the winter months, so GAR has its winter appeal running at the moment, seeking wet and dry food, flea and worm treatment, bowls and beds. The Geelong Indy is supporting GAR and our region’s many pet friends by highlighting its needs and encouraging our readers to sponsor or adopt a pet.

We love our pets in Geelong. We must - Geelong has one of the largest populations of dogs and cats in any Australian municipality with more than 44,000 of them registered. Unfortunately, sometimes pets don’t receive the love and care they deserve. That’s where Geelong Animal Rescue (GAR) comes in. GAR is a 100 per cent not-for-profit organisation with every single cent raised going towards rescuing animals. GAR operates through a foster care system
