Rates cap’s tight fit By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE City of Casey’s rate rise will now be capped at 2.5 per cent - but is that common sense or is it economic vandalism? Those are the respective arguments put forward by the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) and Casey Mayor Sam Aziz in the wake of the rate capping announcement. The Essential Services Commission (ESC) decision to block Casey council’s rate rise application has enraged the City of Casey, which has labelled it as an “infrastructure black hole, set to hit the region. Casey Council applied for a higher cap of 3.47 per cent, 0.97 per cent higher than the set cap for 2016-’17. After assessment the ESC denied the council’s submission on the grounds of a strong budget position. If approved, homeowners would have paid on average $53 more a year in rates and waste charges. Cr Aziz said the decision would contribute to a $168 million funding shortfall over the next 10 years, despite a statement from the ESC indicating Casey’s history of underspending its capital budget. Local resident and member of the CRRA, Brendan Browne has wel-
Mayor Sam Aziz has turned his mind from graffiti to “economic vandalism. 149591 comed the ESC’s rejection, calling it a “victory for common sense. “Mayor Sam Aziz’s talk of an ‘infrastructure black hole’ is just scaremongering, Mr Browne said.
“It’s disappointing that Casey Council used its time and money to apply for an unnecessary rate increase. “The ESC was very clear that Casey Council would be able to meet all its duties and even pay for its capital
works program in 2016-’17, without the additional rate increase. A statement from the ESC read: “The Commission found Casey’s overall budget position to be strong

Boy hit by bike blow By GEORGIA WESTGARTH LEUKAEMIA deprived nine-yearold Seth Sleep from riding a push bike for four years – and now thieves have as well. Having beaten the blood cancer late last year, Seth had been behind the handles of his Giant BMX just 12 times before it was stolen from his family’s Narre Warren South garage. The bike was gifted to Seth by his poppy last year to help strengthen Seth’s legs after 70 rounds of chemotherapy. Now Seth’s dad Simon is “pissed off”. “Seth hasn’t been able to ride a bike since he was diagnosed in May 2012 and I’m pissed off because of the sentimental side of it,” Simon said. The BMX cost almost $500 and was noticed missing on Friday 27 May. The Sleep family have lived in
their Narre Warren South home for more than 11 years and have never been burgled before. “There is stuff in front of the bikes in the garage so you can’t see them from the court,” Simon said. “It’s quite possible they have watched Seth put his bike away because they didn’t steal anything else that was in the garage or anyone else’s bike.” On Seth’s request Simon has checked a local Cash Converters and regularly browses Gumtree and eBay. “Seth keeps checking the garage to see if it’s reappeared,” Simon said. Seth’s doting five-year-old sister Holly said: “They should have taken mine.” Narre Warren police have requested the assistance of the Facebook Eyewatch community and anyone with information on the BMX’s whereabouts is urged to call Narre Warren police on 9705 3111.
Schools shut down By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE dog squad was used in an arrest of one person involved in a home invasion and police pursuit which led to the lockdown of three Hampton Park Schools – three other offenders remain at large. Students and teachers at River Gum Primary School, Hampton Park Primary School and Hampton Park Secondary College were kept from exiting the school grounds for about half an hour on Tuesday 31 May, as police searched the area. A gang of thieves invaded a Pakenham home where a child and woman were present, before stealing a Suzuki Swift and other items from the residence, about 10.30am. It’s understood the four offenders forced entry into the Ahern Road property in Pakenham, where two fled in the stolen Swift. The other two drove off in a white Ford Territory which they had arrived in. The Swift was sighted by police and pursued to Pride Court in Hampton Park, where one offender was arrested nearby in Andrew Court with the assistance of the dog squad. The other three offenders are still being hunted. Lockdowns at all three schools have been lifted and normal school procedures are now in action. Hampton Park Secondary College was deemed safe about 12.30pm. Text messages were sent out to alert the wider school communities.

Rates cap’s tight fit - economic vandalism? From front page “There is flexibility in Casey’s large capital works program and it has been granted additional funding of $2.5 million as part of the Interface Growth Fund. “This frees up funds equivalent to $2.5 million which could be used to fund other capital projects, possibly including those made the subject of the higher cap application. “In addition, Casey has historically underspent its capital budget by an average of $14 million per year. “This further suggests it has the financial flexibility to manage delivery of the two projects identified in its application without requiring a higher rate cap in 2016-’17.”
In the council’s application to the ESC the Hunt Club Football and Cricket Recreation Facility and the Autumn Place Family and Community Centre were identified as the two capital projects unable to go ahead without the rate cap variation. But Mr Browne, a long-term campaigner against a rate rise, said key projects can still go ahead. “Any suggestion that Casey Council can’t go ahead with particular projects, such as ‘The Hunt Club Football and Recreation Facility’ or ‘The Autumn Place Family and Community Centre’ is in direct contradiction to the findings of the ESC. “The ESC found that there are options available to the council to

ensure these projects proceed,” Mr Browne said. Cr Sam Aziz fired back at the ESC after the announcement, labelling the decision “economic vandalism”. “This is short-term petty politics that will lead to long-term harm for the residents of the City of Casey,” Cr Aziz said. “A future State Government will modify this policy and residents could be facing double digit rate increases to make up for the infrastructure shortfall to continue build a first-class city. “This is another unacceptable act of economic vandalism by the State Government who are happy to deprive Victoria’s largest and one of Australia’s fastest growing mu-
nicipalities of a mere $1.6 million, across a whole year to fund critical infrastructure, while wasting $1.1 billion not building a road that Victorians desperately need.” Commission Chair, Dr Ron BenDavid, said that in approving the higher caps for the six municipalities, the ESC needed to satisfy itself that higher rates were consistent with the long-term interests of their communities. “We considered each council’s application on its merit,” Dr BenDavid said. “We approved applications where the councils could clearly demonstrate a long-term financial need, supported by well-developed long-term plans.”

Brothers in grief By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS TWO good-natured Casey teenagers are dead, another is fighting for life in The Alfred after an horrific two-car crash in Kallista on 24 May. On one hand they are statistics of a 2016 road toll that refuses to buckle ‘Towards Zero’. It had soared to 122 by 26 May - 17 ahead of last year. To loved ones of Kristof Kollar, 19, and his mate Lazlo Nagy, 17, the toll is unimaginably crushing. The two died at the scene after the car they were travelling in crashed when it skidded on Monbulk Road near Grant’s Picnic Ground, collided into an oncoming 4WD and rolled down an embankment in the dark. Their passenger, Aaron Goldsmith, 18, was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with critical head injuries. Out of the catastrophe, brothers of the two late teenagers posted a defiant photo, arms around each other, in front of the crash shrine. Oliver Kollar declared on Facebook that he and Isaac Nagy both grieved for their older brothers. “You and I lost a great deal. “They left here together so today my friend and for the rest of my life you are my brother.” Earlier, Oliver delivered a mighty message via a media pack at the shrine for everyone to “cherish your family”. “Don’t be too manly to say ‘I love you’.” Tributes have poured onto social media for the pair, some of them from school friends from Gleneagles Secondary Collage, Hallam Senior College and Fountain Gate Secondary College. Kristof was described as “someone I could always count on” who
helped the person who wrote the tribute to blend into their first days at a new school. His employer, Pretty’s Prime Cuts, posted that he was “such a lovely, well-mannered, all-round great kid”. Lazlo was praised as “one of the funniest and most caring blokes” who’d have jokes with the teacher in automotive class. Many are willing Aaron to pull through from life support. Endeavour Hills Hawks Junior Football Club has spread wings of support around Lazlo’s family, especially his mother and club life member Louisa Nagy. Club president Steve Navarra said Lazlo, a former Hawks player and Hallam Senior College student, was a likeable, quiet boy who stayed out of trouble and had many friends at the club. The family was highly respected. Lazlo’s three brothers play for the Hawks and their mother was a generous contributor. “The family don’t deserve this. They are a wonderful family,” Mr Navarra said. The day after the crash, Mr Navarra was set to join club members and friends filling the Nagy home to cook meals and console the popular family. Senior Endeavour Hills team players were resolved to wear black armbands at last weekend’s game and the junior team was to do the same and pay a minute’s silence to Lazlo. An Endeavour Hills Hawks Junior Football club member, close to the Nagy family, said it was hard to find the words to say to the family. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit which will prepare a report for the coroner.

It’s worse than you think
THANK you to former councillor Brian Oates for the opportunity to relay the true ‘facts of the matter’ about council’s rate cap variation application (Facts Of The Matter, News, 19 May). The timeframes imposed by the Essential Services Commission meant council’s community engagement had to be undertaken in a very short period prior to Christmas and the new year. We would have liked to have increased the scope of this consultation to allow more opportunities for residents to get involved. Council presented the most important information in the focus group and online forum so that residents could make an informed choice in the timeframe available. Mr Oates says council should be more efficient and comparable with its neighbours. Mr Oates should check his facts. Casey continues to be among the lowest rating councils in outer metropolitan Melbourne, we are delivering over $150 million in community infrastructure, we have an efficiency and effectiveness program underway all while serving a population two to three times the size of our neighbours. This sounds like prudent financial responsibility to me. We take community engagement pretty seriously. Despite Mr Oates’ ill-informed claims, all of Casey’s 11 councillors are out and about in Casey every day working on behalf of and consulting with residents. Our contact details are available on council’s website for residents to get in touch with us. And all consultations are listed at www. caseyconversations.com.au if residents are keen to have a say on council business. Cr Sam Aziz, Mayor, City of Casey.
THE statistics provided by the ratepayer association (Rise On Rate, News, 26 May) seriously underestimates the Casey council rate rises. From 2000/01 Melbourne inflation rose 156 per cent while the published average council residential rates increased 319 per cent. In other words, the average rates have more than doubled the inflation rate. If there had been no average residential rate increases above CPI since 2000/01 average residential rates in 2014/15 would have been $761.31 instead of the average of $1614. The average residential rates from 1999/2000 to 2014/15 have increased an average of $43.30 above the inflation rate each and every year. The accumulation of these relatively small increases over time has doubled the average residential rate. Claiming a rate increase above the cap is only worth a cup of coffee or two conveniently ignores the grab for cash by the council has been building over many years. Excessive secrecy plagues Casey Council with 37 per cent of decisions made in secret behind closed doors. To further limit scrutiny Casey council limits public questions to just 30 words and there are other obstacles that reduce the number of questions read out in the meeting. In relation to the 17 May council meeting it was stated “they are happy to criticise Casey but not hang around and listen to all the good things being done in Casey”. If you examine the confirmed minutes of that meeting you will see that at 8.23pm the

TUESDAY’S decision by the Victorian Essential Services Commission to reject Casey council’s application for a rate cap variation of 0.97 per cent really has an impact far beyond representing a statement about the council’s present financial capacity. Casey’s CEO Mike Tyler must now resign as should the Mayor, Sam Aziz. If Mike Tyler doesn’t resign Casey council must terminate his contract for incompetence. Casey has been in receipt of government grants and maintained a substantial budget surplus while the mayor, Sam Aziz, has been conducting a scare campaign about the need for Casey to cut back on basic community services and facilities due to revenue constraints arising from the minister’s rate cap policy. The judgement by the Victorian Essential Services Commission has made it clear that Casey council does not have a revenue problem - Casey had a management problem all the time. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.
council resolved itself to hold a ‘Closed Council’ after a five-minute break. This is when the public are removed from the Council Chamber and decisions can be made in secret. Yet the confirmed minutes record that the meeting also finished at 8.23pm which was five minutes before the secret meeting began. There was no possibility of people being able to hear what was happening in this closed meeting which, from the confirmed public minutes, has been made to vanish. The council can’t have it both ways of holding meetings so secret that they do not appear in the minutes and then criticising people for leaving before they are removed from the room. Obviously reform of Casey council at this year’s election must be a high priority. Garry Page, Hampton Park.
Blaming everyone else CASEY council rates have been capped to CPI by the Essential Services Commission. Now for the spin. The council states this is a loss of $168 million over 10 years and capital works projects will not go ahead or be put on hold. Just take a step back. $125 million to build council offices called Bunjil Place - what is more important, community facilities or a new council chamber? All these projects could have been built as Casey had the money but they would rather blame the government for their wasteful spending. Too late to cry wolf, Mr Mayor. An ADF spokesperson said the exercise to counter potential terrorist scenarios included specialist vehicles and personnel. A JUDGE has bristled at a mere careless-driving charge against a driver who veered across the wrong side of the road and collided headon with a postie’s motorcycle. The man, who appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, had clipped the bike’s rear end on Kingston Road on 26 November. Others gave the writhing postie first aid. The accused stopped briefly, then “s*** myself and just left” without giving his contact details, the court heard. The postie was in hospital for four weeks, requiring several operations to his broken left leg. The accused later told police he had been distracted by passengers “acting like children” in the car. The judge said he was “staggered” how the accused was facing just a careless driving charge.

Areas Alliance (NGAA), encouraged Casey-Cardinia residents to take part. “The stories about stress, congestion and frustration with our roads and public transport are the same in outer suburbs around the country,” Mr Aziz said. “People are sick of spending countless hours in the car or waiting for trains. “Unfortunately, it is our residents who are paying the price of poor leadership and foresight. Successive federal governments have failed to fund and build the infrastructure that fast-growing areas like ours, on the outskirts of our cities, need and deserve.” Drivers caught using a handheld mobile phone while driving for any reason including talking, texting, playing games or taking photos/video face a $443 fine and four demerit points. To sign the Fund our Future campaign petition, which calls for a national fund to address infrastructure problems in outer suburban rapid growth areas, visit: www.fundourfuture.info/actnow.

IN a bid to get their message out about traffic congestion, the Fund our Future campaign is urging fed-up drivers from outer suburbia to take a selfie. The selfies from across the nation will be used to document people’s trip to work. Fund our Future is hoping the images of frustration, congested traffic and time wasted will speak volumes to politicians. Annoyed drivers are encouraged to take a selfie at the beginning, middle and end of their morning commutes - detailing how long the journey takes - and to share it on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #FundOurFutureAU. The selfie social media campaign will be used as part of Fund our Future’s inaugural national Nightmare Commute Day on Tuesday 7 June. A spokesperson from Fund our Future said participating drivers must put safety and the law first. “We want people to take a safe selfie before they start their commute and at end of their commute, if it is safe to do so. If they are on public transport, they can take one in the middle of their commute as well,” she said. “Fund our Future created ‘National Nightmare Commute Day’ because we realise that there are particular issues around commuting in the outer suburbs, and we know that the politicians need to hear the voices of the five million people who live nationally in the outer suburbs. “We urge people to document their trip to show politicians just how severe the commuting problems are in outer growth areas and that something really needs to be done.” City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz, who is the Victorian spokesperson of the National Growth

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
Your vote will help shape Australia.

Hot pursuit leads to jail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
1202687-PB45-15
A DOVETON man, 36, who pleaded guilty to twice driving under the influence - while speeding up to 147km/h in a police pursuit and running red lights - has been jailed for up to 12 months. An apparently substanceaffected Michael Thomas Wilson had run two red right-hand arrows in Langwarrin, hit a truck and sped up to 100 km/h on Cranbourne-Frankston Road in Langwarrin in June 2014, a court was told. Wilson then pulled over with damage to his unregistered car’s front bonnet on Western Port Highway, Skye. Police observed he was glassy-eyed, swaying “sideto-side” on his feet, couldn’t answer questions and his emotions were changeable. He refused a breath test. At the time, Wilson was disqualified for two years for drink-driving, police prosecutor Senior Constable Ryan Johnson told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 30 May. A month before the incident, a drunken Wilson caused other drivers to brake to avoid him as he ran a red light at the corner of Heatherton and Westall roads, Springvale. His car reached up to 147 km/h in a 70 km/h zone as police gave up their light-andsirens pursuit due to his danger-

ous driving, the court heard. In trying to overtake a truck, Wilson collided with a Mazda in the left lane of Heatherton Road, crashed into a farm fence and a mound of dirt. Police had to smash the car window to stop Wilson trying to drive off, the court was told. That night, Wilson recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.143. Wilson also faced a charge of stealing two bottles of vodka from a liquor store, as well as pawning off a phone stolen from a Kew chiropractor’s clinic for $100. On 2 May this year, Wilson and his partner were found by police inside abandoned premises in Fifth Avenue, Dandenong. An “aggressive” Wilson refused to provide ID and went into a fighting stance, police alleged. He was sprayed with OC spray, which had no effect on subduing him. Wilson swung around a children’s bicycle at a police officer, telling him to “come on c***, let’s go”. During the incident, Wilson punched an officer in the eye and struck another in the mouth with the bike. He was chased down the street and beaten with a baton to little effect until further back-up units managed to handcuff him. The Fijian-born Wilson had been heavily using ice since

separating from his wife and children 18 months ago, his lawyer Siva Kandasamy told the court. The accused had drunk heavily since he was 16, Mr Kandasamy said. Wilson had been a “responsible man” in the past - a keen volunteer at Cornerstone church, street soccer and Rescue Australia, as well as helping indigenous Australians. “He just made a wrong decision with alcohol and drugs,” the lawyer said. Mr Kandasamy called for a short jail term given that Wilson had previously breached two community corrections orders for traffic and drink-driving offences. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it was “unbelievable” no one was killed or seriously injured during the driving incidents. “You probably don’t have much recollection of it,” Mr Vandersteen told Wilson. The magistrate said Wilson should not drive until he addressed the underlying causes of his offending. Wilson was jailed for 12 months, with a non-parole period of five months. The term included 29 days already served in remand. Wilson was also disqualified from driving for four years and fined $1000.

Nathalie Nicole was chosen to represent Australia in the Ms Universal International pageant in the US this July.
Crowning glory By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THIS Hampton Park single mum isn’t a Miss or a Mrs, she’s a Ms and proud of it. Nathalie Nicole is off to Reno, Nevada, USA, to compete in this year’s Ms Universal International pageant. Chosen as the Australian delegate, it will be Nathalie’s first opportunity to represent Oz on the world stage. “This is Australia’s first chance ever at this title, this trip is already pageant history in the making,” Nathalie said. And if the 34-year-old takes home the glittering gold, she will be bringing the pageant down under. “There is no directorship for the Ms Universal International pageant in Australia, that’s one of the reasons why I want to get as much awareness about the pageant as possible,” she said. “If I did actually win, the 2017 Ms Universal
finals would be held in Melbourne and that’s never happened before. “Just because you are not married or are divorced with children shouldn’t mean you miss out on the same opportunities that other women get.” The pageant is aimed at women over the age of 25, and Nathalie, who recently graduated with a degree in criminology, said it was a pageant with a difference. “It’s not just about how you look, it’s about donating your time whether you help out a charity or organisation or raise awareness for a particular cause,” she said adding that her chosen charity is JDRF Australia (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) after a friend’s child was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “It’s specifically for single mums or divorced women because we don’t get the same opportunities in pageants which are titled Miss or Mrs.” Flying the flag for Australian single mums and divorced women, Nathalie will compete against 70 other Ms contestants from around the world in July. “I am proud of my Ms title, it’s been a struggle, but I earnt it,” Nathalie said. “I want to bring the pageant to Australia to give other mums the opportunity to get on stage and talk about who they are and what they believe in.”

Caravan dragged away by thieves A CARAVAN was stolen from Kemsley Green, Cranbourne East, between 9pm on Friday 27 May and 9am Saturday 28 May. The Trakmaster brand caravan was parked on the street and thieves removed a chain between the tires and an anti-theft device from the draw bar before moving the caravan. The caravan’s wheels were locked in place and left drag marks leading from Kemsley Green towards the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road then north from there. The owner of the caravan heard noises about 6am on Saturday 28 May and believes that is when the theft happened. There was a possible sighting of the stolen caravan, believed to be worth about $100,000, on Cannes Road in Cranbourne since the theft. Police are asking people to report any sightings of the caravan pictured to Casey CIU on 97053111 or make an anonymous report at www. crimestoppers.com.au

AN IT auditor from Cranbourne and her family have been shortlisted to participate in the Dometic Follow the Sun campaign. The Dometic Ambassadors will spend three months travelling around Australia, raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Emmy Fekete, 36, and her family are in the top 20 families considered to travel Australia for three months, raising money and awareness for breast cancer research. If she wins, Ms Fekete will receive up to $25,000 worth of mobile living products tailored to her vehicle and $10,000 in selected travel expenses. The winners will be holding happy hours at predetermined stops along the way during their journey with all money raised supporting breast cancer research. Ms Fekete decided to enter the competition as raising funds for research into breast cancer is a cause that means a lot to her. “My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, but made it through with support from breast cancer research organisations, so it is a cause close to my heart,” she said in a written statement. Ms Fekete said she was very excited to be selected in the

shortlist of potential winners of the campaign and is keen to get out and see more of Australia. “Being able to explore the amazing landscape that Australia has on offer while meeting new people and sharing our experience with them will be incredible,” she said. “We’ve only just scratched the surface of this country and want to see and do so much more.” Justine Schuller from Dometic said Ms Fekete’s love of travelling and camping was an impressive element of her entry
into the competition. “Emmy and her family really stood out to us due to their passion for the great outdoors and love of travelling in Australia,” Ms Schuller said. “Our ambassadors will get to live the Australian dream of exploring the countryside, all while making a difference to the lives of people impacted by breast cancer.” The winner of the 2016 Follow the Sun Campaign will be announced at Queensland Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow on Saturday 11 June.

Draft budget puts works on the shelf By GEORGIA WESTGARTH AND CAM LUCADOU-WELLS ROADS, sporting precincts and Bunjil Place are all on the agenda in the City of Casey’s 201617 draft budget while some projects are to be put on ice. The draft budget, which is open for community consultation until Tuesday 21 June, outlined $154 million on infrastructure and details of works on five Casey roads. Works will be carried out on Valetta Street in Clyde, Craig Road from North Road to Baxter-Tooradin Road in Devon Meadows, Smiths Lane from Browns Road to Robinsons Road in Cranbourne South and North Road from Fisheries Road to the South Gippsland Highway in Devon Meadows. Heather Grove at the Casey Fields Boulevard intersection in Cranbourne East will be upgraded. The council’s website will be redesigned and a new business innovation fund will be started. Casey council has drafted funds to deliver a netball and basketball redevelopment at

Casey Indoor Leisure Centre and construction of Bradman Drive Soccer and Cricket Recreation facility. The Mayor confirmed that the council had undertaken a new valuation of rateable properties from 1 January 2016. Mayor Sam Aziz said: “All councils in Victoria are required to undertake this valuation every two years to update the council’s measure of how much
a property is worth. “Valuations are independently certified by the ValuerGeneral and revaluations do not generate extra revenue for the council.” Casey council will consider written submissions and adopt the budget at a special council meeting on Tuesday 28 June. FANS of the hit book and film The Dressmaker were thrilled to meet author Rosalie Ham at a Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation event on 26 May. Rosalie was accompanied by the film producer Sue Maslin. More than 200 fans turned out to hear about how the Gothic tale, set in the fictional town of Dungatar, came about. Rosalie explained her own
Once she obtained the rights to produce the film, Sue then had to source a director, cast, location and of course investors. This process took several years even though the movie only took eight weeks to film. To date the film has grossed over $25 million. There was a lively Q & A session after which Rosalie and Sue signed books and posed for photographs.

Doctor goes with flow DR LOUIS Loizou isn’t vain but he sure knows about veins. Phlebologist Dr Loizou has been running Vein Solutions in Narre Warren for the past 15 years and has been treating all types of vein abnormalities for more than two decades. “I provide treatment for abnormal leg veins of all types from spiderveins to varicose veins and leg ulcers,” Dr Loizou said. “I provide minimally invasive leg vein treatments requiring no hospitalisation, no general anaesthetic - virtually back to work immediately. “What makes Vein Solutions different is that we offer basically walk in and walk out procedures that are proven to be very effective negating the need for hospitalisation.” Vein Solution also offers a discount to pensioners and health care card holders. The focus of the business, according to Dr Loizou is leg veins that are abnormal including spider veins and varicose veins. “We provide a full comprehensive assessment which includes investigation with Duplex Scanning,” he said. The doctor has been treating leg veins for 24 years and been a board member of the main credentialing body - the Australasian College of Phlebology for 16 years - holding the vice-president role and is current the honorary secretary. Hearclear has a university qualified audiologist with more than 10 years of experience in diagnostic audiology, academics and research who passes on the benefit of their lower cost structures to ensure modern hearing solutions remain affordable. “If only it was as simple as just buying a pair of hearing aids and walking away but, unfortunately, it’s not,” Aravind said. “First of all, what we have to understand is how different degrees and types of hearing losses affects a person and how each person is different. “This is due to the fact that every single one of us is unique

in terms of our human physiology. “Adaptation is extremely important in the rehabilitation process. “So when we first fit the hearing aid for a patient we have to do the process just like they may be learning to walk again or getting back into any activity that they used to do. “On the first day of the hearing aid fitting, instead of setting the hearing aids to 100 per cent we set it a much lower level depending on the individual.” He said there is a gradual increase allowing the patient to have time to adjust. “Hearing rehabilitation/ hearing aid fitting is not just about buying a pair of hearing aids but it’s all about how it’s been professionally fitted and how it is being followed up to make sure it reaches its full potential to provide the best benefit to the patient,” Aravind said. Hearclear Hearing Solutions is at Shop MM002, Cranbourne Park Family Care Clinic, Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre, High Street, Cranbourne. Age gulf in Holt battle By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a slight bristle when Holt Liberal candidate James Mathias’ age is mentioned - 21 years. Mr Mathias may still be on Pplates but he gives a steely rejoinder when asked if he can relate to Holt’s mortgage-belt voters ahead of the 2 July federal election. “Don’t put it past me,” he said. If he unseats long-standing MP Anthony Byrne - with a 9 per cent swing - he will be the youngest-ever federal parliamentarian. He is younger than even the celebrated MP Wyatt Roy who occupied office at 22 years of age and is an inspiration to the Holt candidate. His youthfulness is actually in keeping with Holt’s dominant demographic categories - 25 to 35-year-old parents, followed by school-aged children, Mr Mathias argues. “I’ve been employed, I pay rent, I’m independent. “I don’t subscribe to the view I can walk in everyone’s shoes, but I can imagine what they’re going through.” Mr Mathias was undaunted by the immense challenge of toppling Holt’s member of 17 years, Mr Byrne. He claims the incumbent’s anti-Uber stance is antiquated and his parliamentary speeches infrequent. “Complacency is killer.” Mr Mathias hasn’t minded a stoush in the past. Before joining the Young Liberals he tried on a Young ALP meeting for size and got into a spirited argument over an issue he can’t now remember. As a 17-year-old University High School student, his name was thrust into state Hansard by Labor MP Martin Foley during a parliamentary attack. Mr Mathias, then an intern at Lib-
James Mathias says he is a voice for Holt's youthful demographic. 154711
eral MP David Southwick’s office, had sent an email accusing his local MP Mr Foley of backing a pro-Palestinian boycott of Israeli products. The email was a private one, Mr Mathias said, but he was shocked to have been targeted by Mr Foley and to be hauled before his school principal. He didn’t shy away from taking part in a Herald Sun report at the time. “There was a lot of media attention. I had the opportunity to say nothing at all or to highlight who the man (Mr Foley) is. “I felt it necessary for the electorate of Albert Park to know why their
representative got stuck into a kid.” As student council leader, Mr Mathias also had his run-ins with his high school’s hierarchy such as campaigning against mediocre canteen food and privatisation of the canteen. Mr Mathias - who quit a businesslaw degree to work as Senator Mitch Fifield’s electorate officer - said he has enjoyed the thrill of hitting the hustings in recent weeks. He said there’s a high number of undecided voters, gauging from the response of early-morning commuters before they cram into trains at Hallam railway station.
He nominates Holt’s 15.6 per cent youth unemployment and ice usage as key issues. The former can be tackled by the government’s planned PaTH internships for jobless youth, he argues. High on his election wish-list is ridding Thompsons Road’s notorious bottlenecks in conjunction with the promised widening of sections of Monash Freeway. So can a Thompsons Road announcement be expected any time soon? “My lips are sealed,” he said.
Windermere looks to inspire WINDERMERE has launched its Inspire a Better Life tax appeal to help victims of domestic violence. The appeal focuses on the alarming increase in the number of reported cases of family violence and how, with the support of Windermere’s services, lives can be changed for the better, free of fear and free of violence. This year’s appeal features Adele, heavily pregnant, her children and her mother, who arrived at Windermere one Thursday morning with nothing. Adele had already taken the first step and found alternative housing for her and her family due to her ex-partner’s escalating violence toward all of them accompanied by death threats. Unfortunately he found out where they were living and that one of the children had been speaking with a school counsellor. He repeatedly broke into their new home and finally threatened to kill his eldest child if they ever went to school again. Windermere was able to provide secure, untraceable accommodation and the support Adele needed to attend to the immediate needs of her family. Windermere CEO Dr Lynette Buoy said Adele’s story was not an isolated one. “We’ve chosen to highlight Adele’s story this year as an act of family violence is committed almost every two and half hours in Casey, Cardinia, Latrobe and Baw Baw shires and at least one third of these incidences will be witnessed by a child," she said. “The community play such an important part in stemming the tide of family violence. By making a tax deductible gift we can help more families realise their dream of living a life without fear. Donations from the community really do inspire others to do more than just dream about a better life”. Donations can be made online at www. windermere.org.au or by calling 9705 3200.

FOR more than a decade, Marushka Vytopil and Bronwyn Berry have been delivering newspapers in the community and the pair speak positively about the role the job plays in their day-to-day lives. Ms Vytopil, a Narre Warren South resident, said that a neighbour who had been a walker got her involved more than 10 years ago. “A lady around the corner used to deliver the Berwick News and then she introduced
me to her supervisor back in 2004,” she said. A typical week for Ms Vytopil sees her drop off a variety of publications. “Mondays and Thursdays I do bulk runs, on Mondays I do the Dandenong Journal and on Thursdays I do the Cranbourne News, Berwick News and Pakenham News,” she said. Ms Berry from Narre Warren has been delivering papers for 15 years and cites two factors that initially motivated her and keep her marching on. “I wanted to earn a bit of
money and walk. “I walk and get fit, I do the shopping centres so I get a good walk in,” she said. And when asked about how long she intends to continue her weekly round, Ms Berry said she intends to maintain her routine for as long as possible. “Until I get too old and I can’t do it,” she said with a laugh. If you’d like to deliver papers, get fit and earn money at the same time contact Fermax on 1300 654 910 or visit www. fermax.com.au.

The premier screening of four short films that showcased the many cultures of Casey ties in with the launch of the 2016 Casey Winter Arts Festival. The Winter Arts Festival will include three months of art events and activities for all residents to get involved in across the Casey area. The festival will have workshops, shows, exhibitions, music and dance and much more where residents can enjoy the show or get as hands-on as they like. The full program of the 2016 Casey Winter Arts Festival can be found at www.casey.vic.gov.au/winterarts

Melbourne celebrated another AFL Women's victory over the weekend with Cranbourne's Danielle Hardiman making her MCG debut.

Danielle is kicking goals By JARROD POTTER RUNNING out onto the MCG meant the world to Cranbourne premiershipwinning defender Danielle Hardiman. It’s all happened in the last 12 months for the 21-year-old, with Hardiman called up to the VFL Academy late last year. Her performances on the track with the academy paved the way for an AFL debut in March, but that feeling doesn’t compare to striding out in a Melbourne Demons jumper onto the home of football. Taking her spot in defence on the world-famous oval was a whole new level of amazement for the hard-edged running back. “It was great - great atmosphere,”
Hardiman said. “The first one was good, but it wasn’t a great atmosphere - but this one gave us a really good taste of what next year (National Women’s League) will be. “Really exciting to run out onto the 'G - all the little girls were lining up wanting signatures and high fives - so it was great to be a part of that.” Hardiman absorbed the early nerves to stand resolutely in Melbourne’s defence. The Demons barely let the Lions get a forward possession and Hardiman was there throughout most of the afternoon to disrupt the Queenslanders’ attack. “I was really nervous at the start,
but I took a mark in the first quarter near the goal line and that helped a lot,” Hardiman said. “The defence was really good - we all worked hard and pushed up when we needed to - we played a bit above our position and really made it hard for them to get a touch. “Players like C Bomb (Cecilia McIntonsh) were getting around me - taking some good marks - and it was great to be out there with them.” It wasn’t all clear sailing for Hardiman though, she was taken from the field late in the clash with what she hopes is only a slightly-injured knee that doesn’t need a reconstruction. “I ended up going off - hurt my knee and had an MRI yesterday (Monday),”
Hardiman said. “Still waiting on the results, but I’ve really hyperextended it pretty badly. “I’m definitely out for this week and hoping it’s nothing like an ACL.” Once her knee heals it will be back to Cranbourne for Hardiman, who thinks the switch from VWFL Division 1 to VFL Women’s has been particularly eye-opening. Hardiman admits the increased game-time has been tough to overcome, but the side is ready to up the ante and push its fitness so it will become more competitive. “It just comes back to moving up - we only played 20-minute quarters last year and they were all playing 25 in Premier,” Hardiman said. “It’s just
fitness and we’re getting a bit more serious with pre-season next year and it’s more important to us. “Really different - last year I felt like I had a lot more time getting kicks off and running, but the opposition this year are right on your tail and their kicks seem to be on point - especially Darebin.” Ellie Blackburn, from Endeavour Hills, continued her domination in the Melbourne colours as well, as she racked up 25 disposals in a best afield performance through the centre. Great form prepares Josh for Rio By JARROD POTTER SURGING through unchartered waters, Olympian-inwaiting Josh Beaver has kept his good swimming form going with an impressive campaign at the Japan Open. Beaver proved his worldwide credentials across his three backstroke disciplines at the meet - held last week at Tokyo’s Tatsumi International Pool - touching in for three podium finishes. He surprised some of the world’s best to touch in 25.30 to earn first in the 50m backstroke on the final day after impressive swims for second place in the 200m (1.57.3)
and third in the 100m backstroke (54.08). “It was a great way to experience racing internationally again, against some of the best in the world swimming backwards,” Beaver said. “I was very happy with the 200 Backstroke, time-wise - it has really set me up for a great couple of months leading into the Olympics and to lay a 1.57 at this time of the season is pretty rewarding.“ “To take out the 50 backstroke was great, a great way to finish off the meet. Shows I have some speed early on in the preparation which I can only build on for the 100
Backstroke come Rio.” The Open has laid the groundworks for Beaver’s maiden Olympic Games campaign - featuring in the 100m and 200m backstroke - and he believes his form and fitness are right up there heading towards Rio. “I'm currently in Japan until the 29th, utilising the great facilities in Japan and the partnership that Australia has formed with Japan and am looking forward to getting back in town and laying some great foundations for Rio,” Beaver said. “Overall the preparation is going great, have put myself in a great
position to perform come the Olympics which are only 70 odd days away.” “I am very thankful for the people that have helped me get to where I am now and look forward to the Olympics and what the future holds for me in swimming. “I think it’s great for the City of Casey to have multiple Olympians getting ready to compete at the games and hope the community really gets around one of the greatest events to be held once every four years.“ Beaver’s Olympic Games campaign begins Sunday 7 August with the 100m backstroke heats.

Smith shines By JARROD POTTER DONNING the Victorian jumper and lining up against the old enemy - there’s no greater individual honour for a VFL footballer as Casey Scorpions Tim Smith found out this week. Squaring off against South Australia - in an interstate and interleague showdown at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday Smith, 25, was brought into the squad as a late call-up and thrived on every second of his state representative experience. After a strong start to 2016 at Casey - clunking a metric ton of marks and slotting 11 goals end - Smith’s omission was redressed quickly after injuries gutted the initial squad and paved the way for him to join the Big V ranks. “It was a huge honour something that was really exciting and just feel privileged to pull it on as well,” Smith said. “I got the call on the weekend prior and I was ecstatic - really excited and just over the moon. “Really good experience and playing with the best guys in the VFL - taking away a lot learning from them and how everyone else goes about their footy ... it was just a super experience.” The SANFL jumped out of the blocks against the VFL and from then on the Victorians struggled to match pace with the hosts. The middle terms proved fruitful for the Croweaters as they booted away to record the

16.10 (106) to 13.9 (87) win, despite the VFL running it out until the last siren. “It was pretty furious, fast and furious, at the start - the first 10 minutes was red hot,” Smith said. “Then even after that it stayed at a fairly high tempo ... it was pretty crazy actually. “I think we just got beaten on the spread around the ball - they ran hard forward and used the ball well, got numbers around the footy and outnumbered us around the contest.” Smith finished the afternoon with eight kicks, four handballs and six of his trademark big marks from his roaming efforts at centre-half-forward. While he thinks he went for one of his customary screamers in the VFL colours, not just saving his best leaping for the Casey jumper, what he takes away from it all was just being a part of Team Victoria.
“Just being out there in of itself was just huge - it was an awesome atmosphere with a good bunch of guys, and it’s something I’ll really relish,” Smith said. Smith and his Casey side battle Port Melbourne on Sunday afternoon at Casey Fields and the high-marking forward puts the side’s success down to the unity between Demons and Scorpions alike. “Obviously, the alignment between Casey and Melbourne is really strong,” Smith said. “The guys that are playing for Melbourne are buying into Casey and the Casey players are buying into the Melbourne team. “When it’s working like that it makes for a really strong team.” Casey versus Port Melbourne starts at 2pm on Sunday.

Inspired by the love of footy By JARROD POTTER CASEY Fields is pretty far inland to find Dolphins, but a pod came to visit the Cranbourne All Abilities Football team last Wednesday. Taking time out from their VFL commitments, a group of Frankston Dolphins coaches and players came to help out last week at the side’s team training. Frankston head coach Patrick Hill said bringing the Dolphins down on the night was inspired by his cousin Corey who plays in the team - and everyone was thrilled to come and join in the session. “I’ve got a distant relative who plays in the side, someone who is a fourth-fifth cousin and I was talking to his grandmother - my mum’s cousin - and she was telling me about what is going on down there,” Hill said. “Corey is always excited
to see me and talk about footy and they said if I was interested I could come down and bring some players down to training to help out. “They really enjoyed it - we finished up with a game and I got the Frankston players involved in the game and they picked the sides - was a bit of fun.” The Eagles squad and Dolphins players even played in a scratch match with the FIDA Division 3 team handpicking some Dolphins players - Michael Sikora, Jordan Pollard, Nathan Gardiner and Lucas Walmsley - to join in the friendly clash. Hill said it was amazing to see unbridled football joy, personified by each and every player who rock up week-in, week-out to play their beloved sport no matter what. “For me it was just as rewarding for us as a coach to see
people playing for the pure love of the game,” Hill said. “Overcoming adversity to be out there - there was one guy out there who looked to me mostly blind and another guy with Down Syndrome who had limited motor activity - to see them out there playing on the night for the pure love of it ... I enjoyed every bit of it. “They thanked us at the end for coming down, but for me the players and I got as much out of it as those who were training there.” Cranbourne’s FIDA team is always on the lookout for new players and if anyone is interested in joining the side or signing up a family member or friend, contact the club on 0450 494 674 or cranbournefc.fidafootball@hotmail.com Cranbourne FIDA faces Mazenod White on Sunday morning from 11am at Casey Fields.

Twin towers sharing the spotlight By DAVID NAGEL CRANBOURNE’S twin-towers of strength, Marc Holt and Brandon Osborne, stole the spotlight from former Carlton star Brendan Fevola in Saturday night’s blockbuster clash against Doveton at Robinson Reserve. Holt was at his belligerent best, lighting up the night sky with a magnificent first-half performance, kicking four of his five goals for the evening, while Osborne was typically frugal, keeping Fevola goalless in the Eagles’ comprehensive 46-point victory. Fevola more than paid his way for the Doves, his cameo appearance attracting a huge crowd through the gate, but went penniless where it mattered most - in the goal square. He had the first shot on goal for the match, receiving a bullet-pass from Aaron Davey, but kicked what would be his best opportunity for the match on the full. The Doves started well, Lachie Batten on fire early, kicking two goals from the member’s pocket, the second a cracker on the run from a tight angle. Holt responded with two of his own, with a Ryan Hendy major giving the Doves a sevenpoint lead at quarter time. But that’s where the Doves resistance caved in and Cranbourne took control. And Holt provided the spark. He unselfishly set up Anthony Vella for the Eagles first of the quarter, at the 16-minute mark, before producing a touch of magic with a halfvolley on the run from 30 metres out. He then capped off the most exciting four minutes of the match with a right-foot snap before celebrating with a one-finger salute. The Eagles would eventually kick eight unanswered goals to lock away the four points by midway through the third term. Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey was particularly pleased with his
side’s performance, coming off consecutive losses to Berwick and Narre Warren. “I was very proud of the boys, particularly the way they went about it,” Goosey said. “That’s the level now that we need to get to, and anything less and we’re letting each other down,” he said. Goosey was thrilled that Holt and Osborne had both starred on the big stage. “I was rapt for Holty tonight,” he said. “He took some great marks on a bloke (Jarrad Boumann) who has played for Hawthorn, and the job that ‘Yossie’ (Osborne) did on Fevola was outstanding. I would hate to have played on him, he’s like a glove.” The Eagles had many winners on the night, with midfielders Max Gearon and Shaun Marusic handling the greasy conditions with ease, while Aaron Bower and Dylan Cavalot caused plenty of havoc with their run. Batten’s two-goal contribution capped off a fine game for the Doves, with Shannon Henwood and Darren Allen also playing serviceable games. The hiatus of Berwick forward Mitch Johnson is over after kicking seven goals in the Wickers’ 39 point victory over Narre Warren at Edwin Flack Reserve. Johnson’s return, after three games in the reserves, gave the Wickers the edge in the battle between the top-two teams in the competition. Berwick led by 19 points at half time and kicked 7.12 to 5.4 after the break to race away with victory. Darren Sheen kicked four for the Magpies. Former AFL stars Beau Dowler (7 goals) and Daniel Giansiracusa (6 goals) had their kicking boots on in Beaconsfield’s 99-point thumping of Tooradin, while Pakenham pair Ben Fraser and Daniel Fry kicked six each in the Lion’s 92-point romp over Hampton Park. Officer had the bye.
It’s a matter of self-belief By DAVID NAGEL COACHES have so much control over their team’s destiny, but instilling belief - well that can only come from winning games of netball as a unit. Beaconsfield’s A Grade team built a hell of a lot of belief with its 40-33 victory over Tooradin on Saturday. The Eagles beat a quality team, at full strength, to emerge as the biggest threats to Narre Warren’s firm grip on the premiership cup. Beaconsfield coach Simon O’Shanassy thinks this could be the game where the penny really did drop for his side. “Sometimes you look back at the end of a season and you remember a game that was a turning point, and I think this will be it for us,” O’Shanassy said. “The girls are really starting to believe in each other, believe that they’re good enough, and I think there’s some hunger and anticipation, some excitement for the year ahead. There was a real feeling that they had achieved something for each other on the weekend.” The Eagles started well, building a five-goal lead at
quarter time, and were never headed, with some of their star players shining on the big stage. O’Shanassy was particularly impressed with a defender, a goaler, and a youngster on the rise. “Dani Cameron (GK) has been playing out of her skin lately,” he said. “In football terms she gets the best full-forward every week, and she keeps on getting better week in, week out. Bianca (Sanzaro - GS) played her best game for the season and Zoe Mason (WD) is only 18, but she’s a ripper as well.” Tara Smith (WA), Holly Gillespie (WD) and Shona Wells (C) were three of the Seagulls’ better players. Hampton Park has taken advantage of an under-manned Pakenham outfit, running out 58-24 winners at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions were missing their starting shooter Meg Rosser and one of the champions of the league in Meaghan Winter, who has an old knee injury flare up. Birgitta Nemaric (GS) was in superb touch for the Redbacks; scoring 44 goals, while
Monalisa Groom (C) and Maddi Hanlen (WA) provided great supply from the midcourt. Emma Jones (WA) did well in her first full game in A Grade for the Lions. Narre Warren showed the gap between the top and the bottom of the ladder is huge with a terrorising 77-16 victory at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Magpies showed no mercy, particularly early, scoring 22 goals to three in the opening quarter. Gabby Dwyer, Tayla Shannon and Chloe Phillips were the beneficiaries of a dominant midcourt, while Tracey Dell and Adele Clydesdale were typically miserly down back. Amanda Goodie and Nicole Westmorland tried hard to lift the Wickers in the third term. And finally, Doveton and Cranbourne have played out a thrilling 24-24 draw at Robinson Reserve. Cranbourne led for most of the night, but the Doves clawed their way back into the contest. Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil was voted best on court by the umpires and should soon receive her Glenda Charles Medal.

Eagles flourish in maiden season By JARROD POTTER VWFL SOUTH EAST - ROUND 7 TAKING revenge for its earlier loss to the Doggies, Beaconsfield soared across Holm Park Reserve to make a bold statement in the VWFL South East competition. The newcomers have been at their brutal best throughout the first month-and-a-half in the league, with the weekend proving no different in a 32-point victory over Mornington. While on paper this looked like an even clash between first and second, Beaconsfield pulled no punches to run away with the triumph and take top spot in VWFL South East after a first-half blitzkrieg. The ball bounced about both ends, as neither side gave away easy goals on the last line, but despite Mornington’s defensive resolve the Eagles gained the early advantage. The run and carry of Ruebi Clayton, Jade Hough and Maddie Martin pushed the Mornington midfield to the brink. A six-goal first half - led by Sophie Boneham and Katie Angelis (two goals each) - cemented the victory. The second half wasn’t as clinical - with the Bulldogs reeling back the margin back by the final siren - but by then Beaconsfield had already brushed aside the best of the visiting attack. “I think particularly knowing Mornington and how they played against us last time, they’re strong and can hold their position,” Beaconsfield coach Troy Robinson said. “So our job today was to do that as well and be quicker with our ball movement. “The first half was the difference for us good midfield movement and an open forward line really helped us today and allowed things to duck in behind it and give us that feed - so I was really impressed with them all told.” It wasn’t just the usual faces stepping up to the plate for Beacy; the Eagles had plenty of production from its Youth Girls as Ruebi Clayton and Chloe Anderson impressed. “To have Chloe come in and play that rotating ruck role and floating across the backline was really impressive,” Robinson said. “Ruebi came up and played forward and running wing role and it shows the depth we’ve got and it’s
Ruebi Clayton paid no attention to the speed limit as she flew down the wings for Picture: JARROD POTTER Beaconsfield. 154845 a great opportunity for these girls to play at this level.” Taking top spot has Robinson at a loss for words - as the newly formed side barely had the numbers to get on the park in the first place, let alone flourish in the maiden season. “Particularly for the challenges we went through off-season to get the team here,” Robinson said. “To be where we are today we’re absolutely blown away. “For the number of girls we had who haven’t played footy, they’re starting to come through and understand what it’s about - it’s really strengthening the team and we’re excited about where we are now.” Beaconsfield travels to Mt Eliza this weekend for its round eight clash. In VFL results, Cranbourne was put to
the sword by Eastern Devils, downed 0.3(3) to 20.21(141). The Eagles host St Kilda this Sunday from 2pm.

CASEY AREA SOCCER AN up-and-down week greeted Dandenong City. With a heartbreaking 1-3 loss to Melbourne Knights in the FFA Cup Victorian qualifiers sixth round on Tuesday night, City reversed the equation to knock over Murray United 3-1 at home in front of the faithful. On the back of some second-half heroics from Halil Gur (61’) and Argentinian Gonzalo Freddi (84’ and 87’), City proved far too much for the visitors to handle as Aaron Healey’s men continue their charge up the NPL 2 East ladder - sitting fourth currently behind Dandenong Thunder, Kingston City and Box Hill United. Dandenong City plays St Albans away this weekend. A last ditch strike from Orlando Mejias saved the day for Berwick City, letting the Lions latch onto a 1-1 draw with South Springvale. Dismantling Aris, who has been on a four-game winning streak up until this week, proved difficult for the 10th ranked City. George Fakos kicked things off for Aris; slotting the first goal of the match and forcing Berwick City to retaliate or go down trying. But in came Mejias in the 89th minute to turn the tables and rob the visitors of three points. Berwick City heads out to Langwarrin on Saturday. Casey Comets couldn’t break the deadlock against Mornington, with both sides left to take a point apiece from the 0-0 encounter
at Comets Stadium. Life in State League 2 was better for Doveton SC - knocking over Sandringham 2-0 thanks to some forward theatrics from Aziz Bayeh (24’ and 74’). Endeavour Hills Fire was no match for Keysborough, downed 0-2, Hampton Park United Sparrows had a 1-1 draw with Noble Park while Endeavour United also matched that score line against Springvale City. Casey Panthers faced another shellacking, this time against East Bentleigh Strikers to the tune of 0-10. Darren Henderson had six for the hosts who took apart the lowly Panthers emphatically. WNPL Southern United’s senior women were barely knocked off by high-flying Heidelberg United 3-4.Tiffany Eliadis (27’ and 65’) was exceptional early, helping the hosts stick in the battle 1-1 at the main break. But the problems stuck late for Southern. Eliadis and Jessica Beddows (61’) stole the lead, but Heidelberg found the back of the net twice in the last 15 minutes - including a last-minute thriller from Belinda Pannella (90’) off the bench to take the win. Southern hosts Geelong Galaxy at Mornington on Sunday. In the Women’s State Leagues, Berwick City knocked over Richmond 2-1 - via Kelsey Minton (14’) and Ellie Priest (25’) easing past the visitors early on - and Casey Comets had an emphatic 3-0 triumph over Skye United thanks to Olivia Gregory’s brace. Dandenong City women defeated Kingston City 3-2 while Casey Panthers drew 1-1 with Beaumaris.
By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 10 RIDING the Big V rollercoaster, Casey Cavaliers went down to Shepparton on Saturday before rising against Warrandyte the following day. The road-trip to Gatorinfested territory has always been difficult and sadly for the Cavaliers Saturday night proved no different with a 69-86 loss. They were stunned early by Reginald Fuller (27 points, 12 rebounds) and Matt Bartlett (22 points), leaving Casey with a hard chase all night. It didn’t help that the Cavaliers racked up fouls and forced the rotations. Brent Hobba (20 points, nine rebounds) proved Herculean from only 24 minutes while Ben Louis (12 points) also toiled from limited court-time. In the end, there wasn’t enough left in the tank to catch up with the Gators as the Cavaliers lost to their perennial Big V rivals by 17. The tricky Saturday/ Sunday double-header can throw a side off but Casey managed to jump out to a 25-15 start on Sunday against Warrandyte - led by Bevan Camilleri (18 points). The Cavaliers didn’t show any fatigue from the night before as they ran out 73-66 winners in the end.
Matt Witherden (11 points, 12 rebounds) continued his impressive 2016 campaign while Brent Hobba (11 points) and Dean Johnson (nine points, 10 rebounds) did their jobs off limited minutes. The third placed Cavaliers battle last place Camberwell away on Sunday. Casey did it easily over regional rivals Keysborough on Sunday; defeating the Cougars 64-45 on the back of their mighty tall trinity. Halting the Keysy offence, Casey clamped down and restricted the opponents to 15 points - through the first half. While they got off the chain in the second phase of the clash, Casey had more than enough left in the tank to run out 19-point victors. The tall timber terrified the hosts as Casey’s Jess Szalek (16 points, six rebounds), Tarryn Wilkin (14 points, 11 points) and Ruchelle McCracken (12 points, seven rebounds) dictated terms throughout the afternoon. Casey sits in a three-way tie for first with Blackburn and Mornington and head up the hill to battle Sherbrooke on Saturday. Casey’s Youth Men lost 50-67 against Maccabi and will head to Pakenham for the regional grudge match on Sunday afternoon.

Mix and Maxx for sedan By DEREK OGDEN IN A world where connectivity is king and social media, like a hatchback, can lay bare through the ‘rear window’ even the most personal information, there are people, usually older, who prefer to hang on to their privacy. In automotive terms the latter are the sedan folk who like to lock away possessions out of sight in a car boot. Mazda has tipped its cap to them by introducing a sedan version of its popular Mazda2, leaving the hatch to attract the younger, more connected, buyer. Available in Neo and Maxx specification - the high-end Genki has been let go - sedan prices start with an entry level of $14,990 for the Neo manual. Neo and Maxx hatchback share their prices with the sedan, while the added Genki tops out the range at $20,690. The mid-spec Mazda2 Maxx hatchback was on test. There’s no disguising the Mazdaness of the ‘2’, with the front taking on the brand DNA. Designers created a dynamic profile by pushing the compact cabin toward the rear of the lower body’s forward sloping lines. The overall effect of this body design is that of forward momentum, while wheels positioned as close as possible to the four corners of the body create a short overhang and achieve a wide track
The Mazda2 hatch carries design cues found across the complete range of Mazda vehicles. The passenger cabin takes on high ideals with cues taken from small aircraft. The instrument panel spreads like the wings of a plane; the round airconditioning louvres resemble jet engines; the radiating lines of the door trim convey the image of air flowing from a jet engine. The intention is to create a feeling of quality that goes beyond the modest class of the car. The driver-centric cockpit environment and classy colour co-ordinated surroundings work well. Next-generation HMI (Human Ma-
chine Interface) with Commander control knob on the centre console, allows easy access to navigation, communications and infotainment, including social media via MZD Connect. A number of functions can be controlled by voice activation, including switching menus, audio play, stop and skip functions, station selection, as well as zooming in and out of the navigation system maps. With a mobile music player or smartphone connected to the onboard head unit via USB, voice commands can also be used to search for songs by

artist name, or to call phone numbers stored in the phone’s contact list. Of two engines available to the Mazda2, the Maxx takes the uprated 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G four-cylinder producing 81 kW of power and 141 Nm of torque, it’s coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. The latter allows drivers to press a switch on the shift gate to switch to the Sport drive mode, where the transmission is automatically set to start out in a low gear. It also increases the amount of torque output when the accelerator
pedal is pressed down further to deliver increased acceleration and a sense of fast response with a minimum of pedal action. Central to this is the delivery of a good field of vision from the driver’s seat, plus the placement of new Human Machine Interface devices to minimise movement of the driver’s line of sight, as well as the adoption of Mazda’s iActivsense advanced safety technologies. Available across the Mazda2 range is the Smart City Brake Support option, which, when driving at low speeds (4 to 30 km/h) around town, the system automatically applies the brakes to prevent colliding with the vehicle ahead, or reduce the amount of damage in the event an accident cannot be avoided. A strong body structure and a full suite of airbags takes care of the passive safety of occupants. There’s good space in the Mazda2 Maxx cabin, with ample head and shoulder room for the average-size occupants in front, while rear leg room is adequate. Rear seatbacks fold to increase cargo carrying capacity from 250 litres. And with just one side of the 60:40 division dropped will take a golf bag or similar long load. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Berwick Mazda, Prestige Place, Narre Warren. Phone 8796 6222.
