Our ‘list’ fighting for dairy farmers Geelong’s Patrick O’Callaghan
A Geelong man’s website is helping consumers support Australian dairy farmers in their fight against the big supermarket chains’ discounted milk. Patrick O’Callaghan has added The Milk List resource at localfoodloop.com to identify the products of dairies that are struggling to compete against supermarket-brand prices as low as $1 a litre - less than most bottled water. Recent cuts to prices paid for farmers’
milk has sent many to the wall amid warnings it could eventually leave Australia dependent on imported dairy products. Public uproar has led to consumers seeking out independent products but supermarkets have responded, packing fridges with their own discounted products. The dominance of supermarket-brand milk in local stores has angered consumers who have expressed their outrage with images and comments on social media.
But Mr O’Callaghan’s list has grown to hundreds of products, identifying where they are available and including a ‘crowd consensus’ field for consumers to rate each product. The list allows visitors to add their own “local milk knowledge including the brand and its points of sale. Some of the listed brands include Sungold, Moriac Farmstead Dairy, Aussie Farmers Direct and Schulz Organic Farms. Continued page 5

Uni yet to see ‘sensible’ convention centre plans Deakin University would consider any “sensible” plan to use its waterfront car park for a Geelong convention centre, according to Vice-Chancellor Jane den Hollander. But the university had yet to receive any “offer” for the prime site or see any proposal for the longproposed convention centre, she said. Ms den Hollander was responding to a frontpage Geelong Indy story about a state MP asking the Andrews government to secure the car park for the convention and exhibition centre. Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay wanted the state to consider using “compulsory acquisition” powers if Deakin refused a proposed swap of the site for City Hall’s Busport building. Local lobby groups including Geelong Cham-
ber of Commerce consider the car park to be the only viable option for the convention centre. But Deakin had yet to see any plans for the centre, Ms den Hollander said. “Despite much public commentary on the site’s suitability for a convention centre, Deakin University has never had an offer from any interested parties, from either the private or government sector, wanting to develop such a project on our land. “Nor have we ever seen a business case, or proposal, to support such a centre. “However, we have been on the public record to say that we would support the development of a sensible strategic plan for Geelong, which would highlight the best opportunities for the city, en-

suring the future of the region.” Deakin would “always support positive developments in the interest of Geelong and its future”, Ms den Hollander said. “If a sensible, affordable plan that is aligned to the future of Geelong and meets the needs of a university town is put forward for a convention centre that will deliver the best return then I will be pleased to take a proposal to my council for their consideration.” Geelong has been lobbying for a major convention centre since the 1950s. The latest push began about a decade ago but has struggled to make headway without a preferred site.

Salvos’ doorknock donations down in ‘tight economy’ By LUKE VOOGT A 27 PER CENT fall in doorknock donations has disappointed the Geelong Salvation Army. The first weekend raised $64,412, compared to $88,100 in 2015. Salvos captain Craig Wood said donations were slightly down nationally over the past five years, which he put down to a crowded fund-raising market and declining economy. “There are many good causes out there,” he said.
“Sometimes, it’s just hard to attract the donations we need to do what we do.” The doorknock is the main fund-raiser for the Salvos’ Red Shield Appeal, which runs each financial year. Mr Wood hoped Geelong would give generously when the doorknock continued this weekend so the Salvos could make ground on last year’s $113,000. Last year Geelong received nearly every dollar back fivefold, with the Salvos allocating about $500,000 for local homeless and disadvan-

taged support. “The need’s far greater in Geelong than what’s given,” Mr Wood said. The decrease followed a trend in Victoria, where the Salvos raised $1,170,502 over the weekend, down seven per cent on last year’s $1,257,173. The Australian total for the weekend was $4,721,316. Mr Wood said the Salvos were collecting donations at salvationarmy.org.au or on 13 72 58.

Ex-MP’s fears for council
Time to chill after warmest Autumn
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s new council of administrators could leave ratepayers unrepresented and disenfranchised, one of the city’s former state Labor MPs has warned. Peter Loney, Lara MP from 1992 to 2006, said he was concerned after writing to interim administrator Yehudi Blacher but receiving only a “pro forma-type” reply that failed to answer his questions. The Andrews government installed administrators Kathy Alexander, Laurinda Gardner and Peter Dorling on 24 May after sacking Geelong’s council in April. “We’re entitled to expect that there’ll still be a real and proper attempt to involve the community,” Mr Loney said. “I’m alarmed that the three administrators will operate like a board of a company. Geelong is not a company, it’s government. “You cannot simply say the community will be denied representation for 18 months. They have to come up with a way to involve the community. “There needs to be a public diary of who they’re meeting with and for what purpose.” Mr Loney said community organisations such as football clubs denied funding deserved to be heard. “Will the administrators meet with the footy clubs that were denied funding and listen to what they have to say? “These are three career bureaucrats and not one has a background of community representation and that’s not good enough. “They have to be held to account as strongly as any elected council was.” Mr Loney said a commission of inquiry report that led to the council’s sacking was “scathing on the culture of the bureaucracy”. “If these people are going to sit back and just act on reports from the bureaucracy how are they going to address those issues raised in the report? “Will Peter Dorling sever his ties with Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Avalon Airport and the Committee for Geelong, all potentially organisations he may have to vote on as a commissioner?
UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail Despite a chilly final week, Geelong’s warmer-than-average May has delivered the city’s warmest autumn on record. Temperatures for the month were about 1.4C above the latest 30-year average for May, with daily maximums averaging 18.2C compared to 17.1C and minimums 9.9C against 8.3C. The warmest day recorded a top of 26.4C on 7 May, while the coldest went down to 12.5C on the 26th. Overnight minimums fell to a low of 1.1C on the last day of the month. The May results gave Geelong its warmest autumn since records began in 1903. After three months of above-average temperatures, Geelong was 1.6C above the latest 30-year mean of 15.3C. The previous warmest autumn was in 1988. This follows a recent small increasing temperature trend for autumn since the late 1990s. Most of the Geelong region received up to double the normal rain for May. Most of the urban area averaged 80mm to 90mm compared to the 30-year mean of 42mm. As a result, total autumn rain was around 132mm - much higher than the average 108mm predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology. Some of the region’s northwest areas, from Teesdale to Melton, received average rain but less than other areas. Mt Sabine topped the list with 363.8mm. May finished with local water supplies around 33 per cent of capacity and rising slowly. May also recorded two thunder days but no severe storms. A dust storm engulfed most of Geelong on 3 May when strong winds picked up topsoil from the parched Golden Plains and deposited it over the urban area. Seven days were windy, with strong northwesterly gusts over 60km/h. The strongest reached 72km/h at Breakwater on the first day of the month and again on 3 May.
SPEAKING OUT: Former Labor MP Peter Loney has fears for council representation under the Andrews government’s administrators. bureaucracy but he had heard that it was still ongoing. “If nothing much has been done about that and it has continued since the council was dismissed that would be worrying,” he said.
“We need to know how he’s going to manage his conflicts of interest because at the moment he’s heavily conflicted.” Mr Loney said the inquiry report focused on a history of bullying and harassment in City Hall’s

IPL ‘expresses interest’ in high-tech Geelong start-up By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Australia is considered to be one of the most sports mad nations in the world but it has nothing on India, according to the head of a Geelong tech start-up who has just returned from the subcontinent. Enterprise Monkey founder Aamir Qutub held discussions with representatives from the Indian Premier League as well as other leading sports organisations. Mr Qutub and nine other companies were part of a sport tech trade mission under the leadership of Geelong-based Australian Sports Technologies Network to showcase Victoria’s export capabilities. “Many of the other sports are looking at using the IPL model because sports management is an issue as they are dealing with such huge numbers,” Mr Qutub said.

doubt open opportunities for expansion into the global market,” he said. “Geelong start-ups are already doing interesting things with drones, sensor garments and in the sports medicine field.” Founded by Mr Qutub in his brother-in-law’s garage, Enterprise Monkey now has a presence in three countries with a global team of 30 and has opened an office in New Delhi. The company has developed capabilities in digital automation and applications for websites, mobile and enterprise platforms. “Elite sport in Australia has embraced sports science and the application of technologies, however it is time to venture into unmarked territory, commercialising sports technology in the global market,” Mr Qutub said. “The sports industry, on a global scale, currently generates $250 billion per annum and we want to contribute to growing that number.”
Enterprise Monkey showcased its Sports Enterprise Management solution for leagues and clubs, expected to gain significant traction in a major sports market like India. “IPL teams and other leagues have expressed interest in trialling the system,” Mr Qutub said. “National bodies could fund the use of the system for grassroots clubs as well as clubs using it for fund-raising and membership fees. “We would use Facebook because it’s huge in India, offering a free registration and referral process. “At the same time we would use the response to research the number of clubs and participants in various sports in India because there is a lack of this type of data.” Mr Qutub estimated that it would take six to nine months to develop the market. “We have a strong presence in sports technology in Australia but this trade mission will no
From page 1 The list has gone national but contains numerous sites around the Geelong region where consumers can buy independent-brand milk, which costs more but helps support Australian dairy farmers. Mr O’Callaghan, of Manifold Heights, said his list was all about helping to save farming jobs. “Australia has a real issue with farmers, prices and supermarkets. The thing that wasn’t being address, for me, was what to do about it,” he said. “The list gives people a useable tool to do something. They can contribute to it as well, so everyone’s helping each other with a solution.” Mr O’Callaghan was “delighted” with the reaction to his list after launching it last week. “It’s caught people’s imaginations.”

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. CCTV urged for churches
Top cop’s ‘wrong’ on coast staffing
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Local churches and other places of worship should consider installing surveillance cameras after a spate of arson attacks, a Geelong Interfaith Arson Forum has heard. About 80 representatives of religious organisations attended the forum which Ansvar Insurance and Catholic Church Insurance organised in response to recent fires at several places of worship in the Geelong region. Victoria Police Local Area Commander Inspector Graham Banks said religious organisations had to increase their vigilance against crime. “They hadn’t seen themselves as victims but that has changed,” Insp Banks told the forum on Tuesday 31 May. “The forum gave them tools they just didn’t know were available and hadn’t considered.” The forum heard from police experts including the retired commander of the Explosives and Arson Squad, Jeff Maher, Geelong police public safety specialist Leading Senior Constable Andrew King and the CFA’s Mick McGuinness. Insp Banks said a number of precautionary measures were available for places of worship to prevent arson attacks and minimise risks. “The forum recommended looking at CCTV cameras and back-to-base monitoring of fire alarms,” he said. “Building owners should ensure fuel for potential fires isn’t readily available and that internal doors are lockable so the seat of any fire is restricted to that area. “They were encouraged to speak to their neighbours and get a Neighbourhood Watch going so they can be alerted to suspicious behaviour.” Insp Banks said the lower cost of technology made such solutions like CCTV and fire-monitoring affordable for churches.
Police Commissioner Graham Ashton is out of touch with rising crime on the Surf Coast, according to South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. “He’s Daniel Andrews’ handpicked commissioner and he’s out of touch with his own members and the community,” Mr Katos said. “He needs to just go and visit Torquay police station as I did with (opposition leader) Matthew Guy a couple of weeks back. “He’s simply toeing the government line. He’s been told he is not getting any additional resources so don’t ask for any.” Mr Ashton told 3AW this week that the Surf Coast had no shortage of police. “We certainly have got some issues around Geelong and we put additional numbers into that area in the last 12 months,” Mr Ashton said. “Down the Surf Coast it’s not the case. It’s one of the best areas in Victoria to be living in from a crime point of view.” Mr Ashton was responding to a talkback caller who said police numbers in Torquay and on the Surf Coast had dropped dramatically. “There’s huge development going on there and it just doesn’t keep up. There’s only one car patrolling at nights and the police station is unmanned at night,” the caller said. “What can be done about police numbers because the crime rate is really going through the roof there?” Mr Katos said burglaries, aggravated burglaries and car theft was “out of control” on the Surf Coast. “The number of crimes in Torquay has virtually doubled in the last two years. If that’s not an issue then what is?” Mr Katos said the state budget revealed that Victoria would wait up to five years for promised extra police. “By the time they’re operational they won’t even keep up with population growth, attrition and rising crime rates.”

Indigenous reserve jobs An Indigenous reserve more than 20 times the size of Kardinia Park could create jobs for Aboriginals on Geelong’s northern doorstep. The Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative is developing a business plan for the Wurdi Youang, a proposed Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) at Little River. The Federal Government says Indigenous Protected Areas “deliver cost-effective” benefits including employment opportunities to Indigenous communities while also protecting biodiversity and cultural heritage. Australia has over 70 IPAs, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the country’s national reserves. Wauthaurong recently hosted a field day at Wurdi Youang for neighbours, partners and stakeholders to “explore the opportunities”, said Reg Abrahams, the co-operative’s IPA co-ordinator. “Wurdi Youang covers nearly 370 hectares and contains remnant critically endangered western basalt plains grassland. Our Aboriginal ranger team, funded through the Australian Government’s Biodiversity fund, was able to show how they are working hard to restore and enhance remnant vegetation,” Mr Abrahams said. “With further support, we hope to translate this work into protecting some of Victoria’s most threatened animals.” Mr Abrahams said the field day “reinforced our belief that we are on the right track”. “We want to work with others to develop a sustainable natural and cultural resource management enterprise encompassing tourism, training, threatened species protection and developing and refining our agricultural conservation products using traditional knowledge and new technology.” The business plan would examine the potential for development of a grassland seed bank, ecocultural tourism and native foods as well as other opportunities, said consultant Louise Beames. “The field day was a great success with a demonstration of Wurdi Youang’s native grass seed harvester, a tour of the nursery facility and native
Double Take While cruising the aisles of Corio’s Coles supermarket, a Double Take correspondent overheard a party of young men, obviously tourists, asking a staffer whether the store stocked “local Australian chocolate”. “Hmmm, I’m not sure. The Coles brand might be,” explained the worker, scratching his head - and standing next to an extensive Cadbury display. And from the nice-workif-you-can-get-it department, Surf Coast sculptor Cinnamon Stephens and husband Rowan have just returned from a 10-day artist residency – in Italy. Cinnamon (pictured) and studio-partner Rowan understandably “jumped at the chance” when Podere Conte Racani, a property in the state of Umbria, offered her the gig. “Our brief was to be inspired by the 70-acre farm and wooded property we were staying at to create ironwork sculpture that would stay as part of a cultural park,” she explained. The pair worked on turning the farm’s 150-yearold barn into “nature-inspired cultural hub”. Cinnamon said she planned to share a public presentation on her experience “in the near future”. Sounds like a slide-show not to be missed!
PROTECTION: Wurdi Youang ranger Alf Oram at the recent field day. seed bank and people had an exciting opportunity to taste some of the rangers’ innovative agricultural native produce which had been grown onsite,” Ms Beames said. “There are some really exciting possibilities to
nurture culturally and environmentally appropriate opportunities for growth and sustainability at Wurdi Youang.” The business plan is scheduled for completion in 12 months.
He might be down a little on form but Cats skipper Joel Selwood’s still best-on-ground with the kids at Fyans Park Primary School at least. “Thanks for getting our ball yesterday when it went on the road”, the school’s grade three/ four Twitter account posted on Thursday, adding the hashtag #ourhero. Expects a less-thankful response from the Giants when he wrests control of the ball at Simonds Stadium tomorrow.

ALL BURNING OFF REQUIRES A PERMIT The Fire Danger Period ended at 1.00am on Monday 11 April 2016 which removes the restriction on lighting fires in the open air.
Daniel Robbins’ work as a Tree Management Supervisor has certainly increased this year with the introduction of the Urban Forest Strategy. Daniel, who has been with the City for 13 years, is excited by the potential of the tree planting strategy which focuses on bringing back tree coverage to areas such as Whittington, Corio and Norlane through the planting of an additional 500 trees per year. He said lush tree canopies could strongly influence temperatures, as well as improving residential property values by up to 30 per cent. “The trees can improve the look, feel and liveability of Geelong and have a strong positive influence on the health of our community,” he said.

No-interest loans ‘breaking cycle’ Clients escaping outrageous rates By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN When Neil Nedic’s car died a few years ago, like many, he did not know where to turn to pay for the repairs. “I went to one of the payday lenders,” the Geelong West pensioner said. “They’re nice when they’re trying to get you to lend money but it’s not so nice when they want you to pay it back and charge a higher rate,” Mr Nedic said. But when his car needed repairs again recently, Mr Nedic sourced a different solution. “I heard about Geelong No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) from a local charity organisation,” he said. “They’re much more affordable and they help you along the way. They don’t lend you money you can’t afford. “I’m on the good cycle now instead of the bad cycle I was on back then.” Geelong NILS chairman Sean O’Shea said Mr Nedic’s story was a common tale among many Geelong residents on tight budgets. “We still find that more people go to the payday lenders instead of coming to us,” Mr O’Shea said. “We need to get the word out that payday lenders are not the only or the best, solution when people are faced with a financial emergency.” Mr O’Shea’s made his call for awareness as Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) came down hard on a payday lender. The national corporate watchdog ordered Rescue Credit to repay more than $35,000 to consumers. The company had applied fees and charges “in the range of 56 to 68 per cent, in excess of the permitted annual cost rate of 48 per cent”, ASIC said.
HAVE A LEND: NILS chairman Sean O'Shea congratulates Neil Nedic on receiving the organisation's 550th loan. Since 2010 ASIC enforcement action has resulted in close to $2 million in refunds for more than 10,000 consumers overcharged when taking out a payday loan. But Geelong residents could have faith in borrowing from NILS, Mr O’Shea said. “We offer fair and affordable no interest loans of up to $1200 to people on low incomes for essential goods and services. “Often people on fixed or low incomes are faced with an emergency and do not have any-

is connected to Good Shepherd microfinance, which has a storefront in Moorabool Street, Geelong. “We started in 2009 and we deal direct with the suppliers of goods and services instead of the loan going to the person,” Mr O’Shea said. “We also have a savings program through NAB. If participants save $500 then NAB matches it. “We’re not financial counsellors but we can help with tips and advice on improving financial management.”

Geelong ‘commuter trains’ unveiled “Commuter-style” trains will run through Geelong under a revamp of regional rail services, the State Government has announced. The Regional Network Development Plan (RNDP) moved Victoria away from “ad hoc” improvements to a co-ordinated network, Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said. Under the RNDP trains, buses and coaches would work together for commuters, Ms Allan said. The plan would add a daily off-peak return service from Melbourne to Geelong and a train every 40 minutes to Waurn Ponds from 7am to

Funding carrot for local legal eagles Federal Labor is holding out a funding carrot to Geelong’s community legal service. A source said the party would announce a commitment for Barwon Community Legal Service later this month ahead of July’s election. The promise follows claims from the legal service that it was set to lose more than $80,000 a year in federal funding. The shortfall would cost 400 prospective clients access to the service’s free legal aid, it said. Executive officer Nick Hudson said the service was already turning away 1200 people a year.

Bus services would be improved on the Bellarine Peninsula, Marshall and North Shore stations would be upgraded and additional parking would be delivered at Lara and Marshall, Ms Allan said. Nationals leader Peter Walsh said the plan failed to “relieve the misery of regional Victorians who were still trying to navigate a disruptive and unreliable transport network”. “Rehashed funding promises and undefined long-term strategies will not fix the crisis facing V/Line services,” he said.

Corio MP Richard Marles visited the service’s Geelong West offices on Tuesday 31 May as he campaigned to retain his safe seat. He faces a challenge from Liberal candidate Richard Lange, a marketing executive with a dairy-based operation in Geelong’s northern suburbs. Former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons has expressed interest in running for Corio but has yet to confirm whether he will nominate as an independent.

Sphinx icon Ray passes away, 90 The man behind North Geelong’s iconic Sphinx Hotel has died. Ray Ramia passed away surrounded by family on Sunday 29 May. He was 90. In addition to establishing The Sphinx, Mr Ramia worked as a tailor and ran a menswear store, a building company and a small farm. In a statement, the Ramia family paid tribute to one of the elder statesmen of Geelong’s business world. Mr Ramia ended up in Geelong almost by accident, the family said. “The then 21-year-old Ray arrived in Geelong in 1947 on what he thought would be a short visit to his grandmother, who was in poor health. “His intention was to return with her to Lebanon where her family could care for her. “But his grandmother had other ideas, refused to leave Australia and Ray decided to stay and look after her.” Ray established his first business as a tailor in Autumn Street in 1946 aged 20, working long hours building the business up to the stage where it employed 16 seamstresses and tailors. When it came time to start a family Ray went back to Lebanon and in 1955 married Elaine Alam, his partner of 54 years. The following year he opened Ramia’s Exclusive Menswear in Little Malop Street, developing a reputation for making uniforms, even supplying Victoria Police.
Diversifying his business interests, Mr Ramia built the Golf View Hotel in Thompsons Road, North Geelong, in 1971 and six years later he embarked on a major rebuilding and renovation program. The 15 metre high replica of Egypt’s worldfamous 4500 year-old monument The Sphinx was added to the renamed entertainment centre, which is still owned and operated by the Ramia family after 45 years. Mr Ramia was seriously injured in a car accident in 2005 but demonstrated his “courage and strength” to recover. “He built his life on the ethics of strong family values and hard work,” the family statement said. “With a passion for farms and building houses, Ray founded a building company in 1975 and built many homes in Bell Post Hill. “He owned a farm at Lara and during the 1980s would travel there every day to feed his sheep and cattle with bales of hay transported in the boot of his Rolls Royce. “Ray had a passion for Geelong which, through his own energy and business acumen, enabled him to become a successful businessman. “Geelong is much richer because of the man who came to Geelong for a short visit and never left.” Mr Ramia is survived by wife Elaine, children George, Paul, Marlene and Julie, and 11 grandchildren.
Aches and pains in very good hands A Mount Duneed massage therapy student has completed a triumphant triumvirate for Gordon Institute of TAFE’s natural therapies course. Claire McCulloch’s efforts won a prestigious National Case Study Award from Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT). Claire’s win was the third year running that a Gordon student had won the award. Claire said she always had a passion for natural therapies so it was no surprise to her friends and family when she enrolled to study massage therapy at the Gordon.
“I put a lot of work into creating my case study submission and it was amazingly uplifting to see how my teachers and the AAMT responded to my work,” Claire said. Her case study will be published in the AAMT journal, making Claire a published author and authority in remedial massage. Claire completed Certificate IV in Massage Therapy and a Diploma of Remedial Massage at the Gordon in 2014 and 2015. She developed a major case study in 2015 as part of her diploma studies.

Letters Centre plans on elsewhere Why would heavy-lifter Deakin University have a bar of foregoing future prime waterfront campus expansion for a convention centre of the proposed fanciful scale (Geelong Indy 27 May)? While G21’s judicious acknowledgement that no business case for the centre has been put on the table is praiseworthy, flagging attempts for the Andrews government to ride roughshod over a key player in the city is nonsense. How can a fait accompli edict for the centre, as put to Chris Bowen by Geelong Chamber Of Commerce, be taken as anything more than a whim drafted on the back of a soggy drink coaster when appropriately scaled alternatives abound? A cost-effective convention centre with all the bay upsides could be integrated into a privately funded Yarra Street Pier or on the Mercure Hotel site, now available at potentially a bargain price of between $25 million and $30 million. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Lost the male vote I have been a Liberal voter for over 20 years but won’t be voting for Sarah Henderson ever again. Our federal MP either misled me that males would receive support from the $100 million domestic violence package announced in September last year or did not know her own party’s policies. Men are not eligible based on their gender because the government legislation does not allow funding for male victims and their children. Sorry, Ms Henderson, I can’t vote for you. Philip Hunt Grovedale
Administer a vision City of Greater Geelong now has three administrators, Kathy Alexander, Laurinda Gardner and Peter Dorling, each with experience in executive positions (Geelong Indy, 27 May). The City has been in a state of inertia since council was sacked by the Andrews government in April, which is no reflection on CEO Kelvin Spiller but the reality of having an interim administrator tasked with keeping the city ticking over without making long-term plans or decisions. Now it’s all hands on deck to review the budget and start mapping out a long-term vision for the city and region. These positions cannot be part-time and seen as a distraction from other roles. Geelong is crying out for leadership, hope and a vision. Geelong, like many cities, has an increased crime rate, issues stemming from alcohol and drug abuse, generational unemployment, industry and workforce transitions and competition to attract new businesses. Geelong has a unique position close to a capital city but has struggled to find its own identity and brand. It should be the administrators’ priority to take advantage of what the region has to offer and map out a large, visionary plan for Geelong, using the infrastructure, environment and people assets unique to the region. I wish them well in their new roles and look forward to working with them, not as caretakers but as visionaries and planners. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

Buckets & Bouquets Buckets to the authority responsible for the out-of-order public toilet at Lara’s sixways, which have been like this for over six weeks now. Busting, Lara Bouquets to Victoria Police for applying hoon-driving laws. Please continue your vigilance so as to make our roads safer and quieter, particularly after dark. Persistence Pays, Geelong West Buckets to Federal Government for cutting funding for Geelong Courthouse Youth Arts Centre (Geelong Indy, 19 May) and other performing arts companies across Australia. I’m angry that the Government does not realise the economic value of the arts community. Nicholas, North Geelong
Snouts in the council Russ Jones’s letter in last week’s Geelong Indy was excellent, although he probably lost a friend with all the details of council staff allowances published. The terrible thing is every council gives all those freebies to staff - it’s a tax-less pay rise. The State Government is the same, only greedier because it’s one step up the ladder. The Federal Government is worse again, like Joe Hockey’s $200 a day to live in his family home, hence the saying about pollies having their snouts in the trough. They tell us we can’t live beyond our means, so I will send a copy of the letter to Geelong’s council and ask for more details. R Jones St Leonards
Cut immigration, save a bundle Immigration policies have come under review in this election. Last year over 168,000 immigrants were allowed to settle in this country. In the Rudd-Gillard era the intake reached over 300,000 some years. High levels of immigration have considerably stressed the country’s infrastructure, government outlays and placed further upward pressure on housing prices. The younger generation of Australians are being frozen out of the market because of the high cost of owning the Australian dream. Immigration should be temporarily reduced to a maximum 50,000 annually for the next five years. This would stabilise housing prices by taking the pressure off demand and, hopefully, reduce prices so more young people could afford homes within a reasonable distance of the CBD. Reducing immigration would also reduce government expenditure on welfare, thus aiding muchneeded budget repair. Alternatively, the money saved from the high cost of settling large numbers of new arrivals could be channelled into much-needed infrastructure. Alan Barron Family First candidate for Corangamite

people have been put at risk by these horrific cuts. At present Australia gives just 22 cents in every $100 of gross national income to foreign aid. That’s just .22 per cent, our lowest level of giving ever. I ask people of goodwill in Geelong to urge candidates and political parties for whom they plan to vote on 2 July to have the courage and compassion to begin rapidly increasing overseas aid again. Our nation is prosperous and I believe we can share much more of our wealth both with developing countries overseas and with those who struggle financially here at home. Robert Van Zetten Highton
The Grating Communicator Malcolm Turnbull continues to demonstrate he is not up to the job of leading this nation after more than eight months in the job. His failure to carry the community with him on his government’s planned changes to superannuation, in the shadows of a general election, is proof positive of this assertion. It is extraordinary how he has managed to alienate his own traditional support base in the matter. He is an appalling communicator who could well be handing the 2 July election to Bill Shorten’s ALP on a plate. Heaven help us. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Ban the bag Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year, of which half end up in landfill, 10 per cent are recycled and the rest wind up in the environment. Millions of animals die annually from ingesting or entrapment in plastic bags Even if used as bin liners, the bags still end up in landfill and take between 20 to 1000 years to break down. As the custodians of Earth, I implore people to reject the convenience of yet another plastic bag, change their habits to re-useable bags and to not leave home or the car without them. Buy biodegradable bin liners. A great range of stylish re-useable bags is available, so use it for a fashion statement. We can cut plastic bag addiction if we try. Anna King Clifton Springs
The Turnbull Government’s Smart Cities Plan is a great idea but will encounter challenges in achieving a maximum 30-minute commute for most people, especially in larger capital cities. Maybe a new helicopter Uber service could help realise this. It might be right up Dick Smith’s alley. Shame it wasn’t running a year ago when it could have saved us some money and Bronwyn Bishop her job! Stephen Juhasz Geelong West
La ning-nong theory In last week’s Geelong Indy Letters we were told that climate change caused most current major conflicts and that closing all our base-load coal power stations for replacement with windmills was somehow good for us. All of this was apparently needed because of impending catastrophic incineration of our planet by man-made CO2. Over the past few thousand years the Earth has cycled between warm and cold regularly. In the 13th century it was so hot that farming in Greenland was possible. Global temperatures spiked in the past 12 months because of another naturally occurring El Nino cycle but warmists went into overdrive spouting untruths about how we were doomed. However, after every El Nino is a cooling La Nina that cancels out the temperature spike. We have now reached the top of the cycle that last peaked 800 years ago. Many scientific organisations now predict impending global cooling. Ironically, NASA recently confirmed that increased atmospheric CO2 was causing substantial greening of our planet. CO2, of course, is plant food. Lastly, what did greenies have before candles? Electricity! Peter Rees Bell Park
Making history on peninsula Congratulations to the many people who since 1976 have worked to establish Bellarine Historical Society and in the ensuing years have done all in their power to document and update the history of the Bellarine Peninsula. White settlement of this area is an important story in the establishment of what we now know as Victoria, Melbourne and Geelong and an agricultural district important to the development of this modern centre of population and industry. Little wonder the peninsula has often been referred to as the ‘cradle of Victoria’. It is important the area’s history continues to be recognised and is not diminished through its amalgamation with greater Geelong. Rapid, ongoing population growth requires that Bellarine Historical Society is given greater community support to carry on its invaluable work. May the society prosper and grow in years to come with the benefit of support from newcomers to the area, which promises to take an even moresignificant place in Victoria’s history in years to come. Well done, Bellarine Historical Society and congratulations as we celebrate the anniversary of 40 years of service. I sincerely thank all the dedicated volunteers for their commitment since June 1976. Peter Cowden Clifton Springs

FINALLY FRIDAY

Avante-garde and easy on the ears
Ireland’s most famous and successful duo, Foster and Allen, return to Australia and to Geelong next month as part of their 18th Australian tour. Mick Foster and Tony Allen will release a new album, Celebration, marking their 40 years in the business. The charismatic singers have been performing their unique blend of easy listening and folk music all over the world and their popularity is proven by their record sales. Between them they have sold 20 million records, making them one of Ireland’s biggest entertainment exports, in the same league as U2, Enya, Boyzone and The Corrs. Their 27 albums have included the immensely popular The Rambles of Spring, A Bunch of Thyme, Maggie and After All These Years. Their chart success stretches back to 1982 with their first appearance on Top of the Pops. This new album features two duets with The Chieftains and Sir Jimmy Shand and his Band. Formed in 1975, this most famous singing duo in Irish music history began working on the local music circuits of Ireland and England. In their first year, Foster and Allen recorded their first single, The Rambles of Spring, a massive hit on both sides of the Irish Sea. Tony Allen was born in Mount Temple, Ireland, the youngest of nine children. His family loved music and encouraged Tony’s interest in it from a very early age. He turned professional in 1968, playing guitar and singing on a national level with many wellknown Irish bands. He met Mick Foster in 1975 and they joined to form Foster and Allen. Mick was born in County Kildare and began playing the piano accordion at age 13. Just four years later he won the first of three All Ireland Accordion Championships. Foster and Allen perform at The Playhouse, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, on Wednesday.
The music of a “colourful figure” from the avantgarde movement in early 20th century Paris will fill a Geelong church this weekend, according to its promoter. The latest concert in the Music at the Basilica series would feature works by Erik Satie on the 150th anniversary of his birth, said Jane Bashiruddin. Claude Debussy was also on the playlist, Bashiruddin said, with the evening’s performers to include Geelong poet Rosemary Blake, flautist Brighid Mantelli, pianist Sonoka Miyake and Frank De Rosso on the organ. “Some of the highlights will be Satie’s Gymnopedie No1 on piano Debussy’s Afternoon of the Faun, arranged for flute and piano, and Debussy’s Girl With the Flaxen Hair, arranged for organ. “A supper of cake and warmed mead will follow the concert.” Bashiruddin said tickets would be available at the door, with students and children under 12 admitted free.
There, there pet, a musical rescue A group of volunteers rescuing “unloved cats and dogs” around Geelong will benefit from an afternoon of music at the Barwon Club next month. Organisers said proceeds from GARfest2016 would go to Geelong Animal Rescue (GAR), a not-for-profit organisation that saves and rehomes lost or neglected pets. The show would present 18 local bands and musicians while also running raffles and silent auctions to raise money, the organisers said. A diverse line-up of acts on the bill includes pop singer Imogen Brough, alternative band The Kite Machine and rock group Audemia. GARfest2016 begins at 6pm on 16 June.
IRISH EYES: Foster and Allen will perform at GPAC on Wednesday night.

It’s the digital age and technology is moving ever faster, presenting challenges to the way people see the world. It’s this nexus that is explored in a new touring exhibition coming to Geelong Gallery this month. People Like Us is a major exhibition in partnership with Museums and Galleries of NSW (MGNSW) exploring the inter-relationship between art, technology and human experience. The exhibition brings together artistic interpretations of the capacity new media and technologies bring for experimentation with ideas and information in the 21st century. Exhibition curator and UNSW Galleries director Felicity Fenner said the works used moving image, interactive digital technologies, data visualisation, sound and music to explore connections between people their environments. “Reflecting our innovative use of new media, contemporary artists have in turn embraced technology more than any previous generation of artists, as they explore evolving attitudes and articulations of the human experience. “These new technologies are shaping a new version of the human story, and this area is a fascinating platform for discussion on our world today.”

The exhibition utilises a great deal of interactivity with a wide variety of opportunities for visitors to engage with the artworks, Ms Fenner said. George Poonkhin Khut’s Brighthearts app uses real-time bio feed data in heart rate controlled images and sound. John McGhee’s digital animations invite visitors to take the wheel on a wild ride through human blood vessels. Volker Kuchelmeister and Laura Fisher’s Veloscape tracks participants’ emotional responses as they take a virtual bicycle tour of Sydney inside the gallery space. Ms Fenner said people Like Us presented a number of Australian premiere works by high profile international artists. Michael Nyman’s poignant symphonic sound work was commissioned by the 2014 Liverpool Biennale to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough stadium collapse. Italian video artist Yuri Ancarani’s presents Da Vinci, an acclaimed, uncanny portrayal of a robotic surgical procedure that confounded visitors to the Venice Biennale. The National Exhibitions Touring Support Australia exhibition is open from 18 June to 21 August.

The addition to Geelong West’s culinary culture has been reviewed as one of the best Japanese restaurants outside Japan. And that’s from well-travelled tourists as well as locals who have discovered the authentic delicacies served with a minimum of fuss. The real strength of Sakuratei is the extensive menu, with everything from soups and entrees, main courses of ramen, udon, bento boxes and curries to desserts. The teriyaki chicken and beef have proved popular, along with the dumplings and hot-plate meals. Owner Flora says although some meals are not

Rotary brings new sporting challenge A new futsal league competition has started for 60 young refugee and asylum seeker men living in Geelong’s northern suburbs. The fORT Youth Centre manager Daniel Parker said the centre is also keen to get some of the young girls involved as well with a volleyball competition in the future. Between 60 and 80 young men have been participating in a formal weekly competition on a Monday evening, initially with six teams last year which then, due to demand, grew to eight. All teams have their own uniforms and team logos and are of mixed nationalities. The Futsal League commenced last year under a partnership initiative between the council’s fOrT Youth Centre and Corio Leisuretime Centre in conjunction with Football Federation Victoria and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Corio Bay. Mr Parker said it was a very successful initia-

Is there a world without borders? There is according to famous Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl or Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. “Borders, I have never seen one,” Heyerdahl once famously said. “But I have heard they exist in the minds of some people.” The famous Scandinavian embarked on his 8000km Kon-Tiki expedition on a hand-built raft and the world learned that distance did not hinder ancient peoples from reaching faraway places. When it comes to bridging cultures, Southern Cross Cultural Exchange believes that “the whole family, not just the individual, stands to gain” from the actions of one youth living half a world away,” said Rob Lindsay, national director at SCCE. They’ve shared the neighbourhood their entire lives, now Beverley and Margaret have both made the move to Palm Lake Resort Truganina. 154967
Positive move for lifestyle On their first tour of the village, they both felt that Palm Lake Resort had a genuinely friendly vibe. Margaret said that walking through the designs at Palm Lake Resort she could see herself living there and moving from the only home she’s ever known. Beverley and Margaret both put their deposits down on the same day on unconstructed homes. They wanted to build homes from the ground up and be able to see their dreams become a reality. Six months after they placed their deposits
they moved in, both on the same day! Beverley said they originally planned to move in a week apart - so they could help each other move. They decided to move in on the same day and it helped tremendously to have each other’s support. Palm Lake Resort Truganina provides affordable luxury living for active adults who are looking for a lifestyle change. Beverley and Margaret have known each other for 45 years and have lived five blocks apart their whole lives. Now they’ve moved in to Palm Lake Resort Truganina and live only five houses apart! They both felt they needed to downsize their homes. Surprisingly enough, when Margaret mentioned looking into a Lifestyle Resort, Beverley had been thinking the same way. Palm Lake Resort Truganina was their first stop of five on a weekend tour of different resorts.
HEARING Aid Specialists Geelong has been a family-owned practice since 1991 but has operated on the same central city site in Yarra St since 1989. Locally owned, operated and staffed, the business takes great pride in helping people achieve their full hearing potential. Over the years hearing devices have become more advanced and able to provide wearers with better outcomes in a variety of listening situations. Along with the advancement in technology comes the need to accurately assess the performance of the hearing devices. Hearing Aid Specialists Geelong’s Marcel Timmers likens it to buying a sports car but then having it tuned by someone who either doesn’t have the right equipment or the experience to extract the correct performance. “It’s very important the devices are calibrated to the individual’s hearing loss accurately and also take into account the individual’s needs,” he advises. Appointments for free consultations are available by phoning 5223 2770.

SENIORS Ear wax candles may feel nice and look funny but they’re unlikely to be effective.
Ear candle theory goes up in smoke 1230143-LB22-16
Visit Crystal Clear Ears for gentle micro-suction cleaning without water.
“Well, I tried ear candles, but my ear is still blocked!” That’s the story Geelong ear nurse Mardi hears every week. People often come to Mardi when they have tried other methods to clear their ears, without success. Well, what is ear candling? A hollow candle is placed into the ear then lit and the belief is that it draws the earwax out of the ear. In fact, the “wax” that remains in the unburnt section of candle, has been tested by scientists, and found to be simply candle wax. Mardi spoke to an audiologist, who did a simple test of burning an ear candle in a mug on the bench, without putting it anywhere near an ear. At the end of the burning he examined the candle which was full of ‘wax’. “People tell us that ear candling is very relaxing but, in fact, it does not work to remove earwax.”

You need someone to look inside the ear, to establish if earwax is present. Ears are dark tunnels and very difficult to see into and many people don’t realise they have a problem. Mardi’s clinic in Pakington Street, Newtown, specialises in unblocking ears gently, professionally, and without water. Nurses like Mardi spend all their working days examining and cleaning ears. This is a very common problem. Ears are precious and our hearing is precious. It is important to seek professional help when we have an ear problem. Ears often block up and some families more prone to this problem than others. Wearing hearing aids or earplugs regularly causes ear wax to block the ear. Plan well ahead for pension cuts From 1 January 2017 new rules will apply for the Centrelink Age Pension Assets test that will affect thousands of current pension holders. For people eligible for a part pension, the pension rate currently reduces by $1.50 per fortnight for every $1000 of assets owned over the full pension limit. From 1 January 2017, the pension will be reduced by $3 per fortnight for every $1000 of assets over the limit. One strategy to reduce your assets is to invest in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan which can both be organised by Kings Funerals with all funds invested with a friendly society. Currently up to $12,250 can be invested in a
funeral bond and this investment it is not deemed to be part of a person’s assets. With a fixed price funeral plan there is no limit on the amount they can invest. This ability to reduce assets by investing in a funeral bond or a fixed price funeral plan is a benefit that is not available with funeral insurance products. An accountant or financial advisor will be able to provide information about options that will best suit individual needs. Call Julie Spriggs, Pre-planning Consultant at Kings Funerals on 5248 3444 to discuss funeral planning options.
New rules will apply for the Centrelink Age Pension Assets test from January 1 next year that will affect thousands of current pension holders.

Here to stop the silent treatment Waurn Ponds Hearing Clinic has proved that not all small businesses fail in the first two years. From its inception as a local independent audiology practice in 2011 it has flourished by providing what people have been missing. Its small team of dedicated staff who want to help people communicate better and continue to enjoy their social life even as hearing deteriorates with age. Their clinic at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre provides a central location for residents of the South Barwon region. Staff at Waurn Ponds Hearing Clinic understand that no one wants to get a hearing aid nor understands what better hearing can achieve. They encourage suitable clients to try amplification in order to better understand what options are available. After a trial either clients will understand the improvements amplification give and want to wear a hearing aid or they will know that they aren’t yet required. This ensures that hearing aids are worn and loved not wrapped and placed in a dark corner. Waurn Ponds Hearing Clinic is at Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, 135/177 Colac Road, Waurn Ponds. Those with fair hair may be unsuitable for laser hair removal and, due to the lack of pigment, laser will not work on red, white or grey hair. Not all lasers are the same and Australian Skin Face Body uses a medical grade laser. To celebrate the start of winter, Australian Skin Face Body has an irresistible hair reduction offer at 20 per cent off a course of three treatments. Laser is not only for hair removal.

The role of feet in mobility and balance make them the basis for most physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. But few people realise that feet can affect and cause problems elsewhere, such as in ankles, knees, hips and backs. Bad foot posture can also pull the body out of alignment, so any pain should not be ignored. Untreated problems almost always worsen but the solution is often simple with the correct diagnosis and treatment. Foot & Leg Pain Clinics musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh says people often endure painful conditions for far too long. “Most conditions can be easily overcome thanks to the latest medical research and treatments. Even patients who’ve been told there’s no solution or that surgery and/or medications are their only options can now be treated with great success. “With the right diagnosis and treatment from an experienced practitioner who addresses the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms you can achieve successful long-term outcomes.” Foot & Leg Pain Clinics Belmont can help

A lifetime of Volvo knowledge is being passed along to the new breed of automotive technician at Geelong West Automotive. Lifelong Volvo fan and unabashed admirer, George Bellingham, is passing along his love of the Swedish marque to leading technician Joe Atkinson. Joe is already well versed in the working of top German automakers Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes Benz. With George’s tutelage, Joe is expanding his repertoire to becoming a Volvo specialist. George worked with former well-known Volvo dealer Trevor Stanley and the Peck and Stokes dealership before opening his own workshop in Belmont. Now it’s time to pass along his store of knowledge after specialising in Volvos for more than 40 years. “What George doesn’t know about Volvos isn’t worth knowing,” agrees Joe. “He has taken the slogan of Volvo for Life literally and he lives and breathes them.” Along with his vast knowledge, George has also brought his dealership level computer equipment, including the Volvo Vida offering full guided diagnosis, spare parts and technical training. Geelong West Automotive uses only quality or genuine parts, following manufacturer guidelines. The specialised Volvo workshop offers choice of where to service and repair Volvos with peace of mind, while maintaining the manufacturer’s warranty. Geelong West Automotive is at 10 Autumn Street, Geelong West, phone 5221 5522, email service@geelongwestautomotive.com.au or visit the website at geelongwestautomotive.com.au to make an online service booking.

SPORT Cats face another tussle
Get snapping ON THE BITE
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Chris Pitman
IT’S been a decade since Geelong lost three games in a row, a record that will be under siege when the Cats face GWS Giants on Saturday afternoon at home. During that time Geelong lost the odd game here and there but never fell into the kind of slump it faces at the moment. Coach Chris Scott has been honest in saying he is at a loss to fathom the reasons for the decline. Goal kicking inaccuracy, too many drivers becoming passengers at the same time, and a revolving door of changes week to week could all have played a part. Perhaps being saddled with flag favouritism crept under the player’s guard. Geelong has a love-hate relationship with the momentum-fuelled burst type of football commonly played now. The Cats can put on a burst at any time in the game but still have trouble stopping opposition momentum. The damage on the ladder has been contained for now, with other contenders also suffering losses and keeping the upper echelons fairly even. But a loss this week could see significant slippage, with the Cats facing a snake-like slide after its dogged efforts to climb the ladder. At least the players will have no excuse for taking the Giants lightly, having already been knocked over by them once this season. The mere motivation of reclaiming bragging rights from Cats export Steve Johnson should be
The onset of cold weather encouraged anglers to seek elusive winter snapper on Corio Bay over the past week. Andrew Whitford anchored on the bay after locating a few promising marks on his sounder. Hearing the drag on a reel scream to life, Andrew’s pilchard bait was devoured by an 8.76kg snapper that gave him a run for his money on 4kg line. Brenton Gregory spent a few hours fishing the bay land-based with squid baits, eventually landing snapper of 82cm. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore chased the whiting on the grass beds at Queenscliff again, boating a bag-limit capture of fish to more than 40cm. Michael then restocked his supply of squid, catching 10 over at the mouth of Swan Bay. St Leonards hosted large schools of whiting in the Bourke Street area. Anglers who found clear patches of sand surrounded by grass beds had the best results, especially when fishing with pippie baits. The pier continued producing good numbers of whiting, with anglers fishing into the night landing better numbers of both species. The Barwon River estuary kept fishing well for silver trevally to 40cm on pilchard fillets. Small whiting and salmon were also taken, while anglers with Bass yabbies caught black bream. Large Australian salmon were taken along the Surf Coast, with fish reaching 2.5kg landed half way through the run-in tide. The best beaches were 13th and Bancoora, while those further west were also successful. The Western District hosted excellent tuna fishing when the weather allowed. Apollo Bay produced both school and barrel-size tuna on the reefs out from Cape Otway. Port Fairy and Portland were also productive, some of the school tuna devouring large 10-inch skirted lures some days. Trent Schiller and Brenno Edwards fished one of the area’s estuary systems, with the latter catching 85cm mulloway on a soft plastic. Trevor Homes, Michael Evans and Ben Young spent time casting lures around Lake Toolondo for a catch of solid brown trout along with the odd rainbow trout and a redfin. Both soft plastics and hard-body lures worked a treat. Andrew Orchard fished the Thredbo River for some of the most impressive brook trout Australia has to offer, with fish reaching 50cm and 2.5kg. Casting hard-body lures worked well for Andrew. The next week promises more-settled weather, so Port Fairy should be a viable option for school-sized tuna. Whiting should be available from Queenscliff to St Leonards, while freshwater anglers might like to keep Lake Purrumbete and Bullen Merri in mind.
DOMINATE: Tom Hawkins has an opportunity to kick a bag aginst the Giants. sufficient, in addition to Scott’s usual exhortation to bring a professional level to every game. While coach-in-waiting Johnson will no doubt be offering his match day notes to Leon Cameron, the blue print for taking down the Giants was published by Adelaide last week. Statistically there is little between the two sides with Geelong holding a small advantage in marks taken inside 50. It is the midfield that needs to bring a tougher edge to the game and create greater defensive pressure without the turnovers that bugged them against Carlton. The Giants have a fleet of running players but
still offer a weakness in running both ways which Geelong can exploit. The clearances battle against Joel Selwood, Patrick Dangerfield, Cam Guthrie and Mitch Duncan will tell the tale. Improved accuracy up forward wouldn’t go astray either, giving the midfield the motivation to keep pumping the ball in rather than facing repeated disappointment that their efforts are to no avail. Adelaide’s forwards had a field day against a depleted Giants backline so this presents an opportunity for Tom Hawkins and co to get back on track.
First loss of the season brings Warriors back to earth By JOSIP ZILIC North Geelong Warriors’ first home loss of the season brought with it a silver lining, top spot may have been lost but there is a long season ahead and they now have an opportunity to test character and resolve to bounce back into form. North Geelong face off with Nunawading City on Sunday at Mahoney Reserve, the Eastern suburbs outfit secured it’s first win in NPL2 history against Murray United two weeks ago only to capitulate to Dandenong Thunder with a humiliating 1-10 scoreline last week. It’s fair to say that Nunawading have had a tough baptism of fire in NPL life, however they are not to be taken lightly. They possess youthful exuberance and a dash of devil-may-care, which is the right recipe to upset travelling teams when they visit Nunawading. After establishing themselves on top of the ladder, the Warriors recent form has dipped and the scoring has waned - the ability to put away the lesser types with confidence is there along with solid defensive displays, however there is yet to be a victory over any team in the top half of the competition.
GROUNDED: A desperate Nicholas Jurcic on the deck against St Albans' Nick Sarbin. (Live Pixel) Only St Albans, which the Warriors lost to on Saturday, has a solid 2016 record to date against teams in the top half. Last Saturday’s loss to St Albans put the Warriors midfield in focus. Plenty of easy possessions were afforded by the opposition but it didn’t result in defining touches to impose on St Albans, and often resorting to longer balls which only played to the visitors' hands. St Albans used that to their advantage and counterattacked throughout.
The visitors opened the scoring at 25 minutes, former Warrior Michael Grgic lurking at the back post collected a corner to calmly dispatch it past Daniel Zilic in goals. After half time the match resumed at a slower pace until the 52nd minute when a rushed clearance from Alex Baird slipped past Matthew Townley and Josh Pugh for Adrian Baressi to charge onto and drill past Zilic. In customary fashion, the Warriors rallied. Vito Cichello and Matt Thorne were hitting targets to advantage, Nathan Long courageously kept breaking the lines and Nicholas Jurcic was beating his man, drawing fouls and cutting balls back, however the goals were not threatened. With 10 minutes to go Jurcic zipped into the box and drew Baird off his line, resulting in the St Albans keeper upending Jurcic for a penalty and receiving his marching orders. Townley stepped up to put the penalty away and bring the subdued Warriors faithful to life. Despite several other heart stopping moments the match ended in a 1-2 loss. We’ve seen the quality in character from this North Geelong side before and expectations will be high this week for a positive response.
