Labor seat safe
Now that’s one Hecker a scarf
Lyons shuns Corio By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Corio is set to retain its safeseat status after former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons decided against nominating for this year’s federal election. The Geelong Indy understands Mr Lyons decided to take a break from the hurly burly of politics after his mayoral experiences. He was this week overseas on business and out of contact. The Indy understands Mr Lyons has enjoyed the break after State Government sacked Geelong’s council in April. Nominations closed at noon on Thursday, with candidates declared 24 hours later. The Indy reported last month that the region’s other federal electorate, the marginal seat of Corangamite, was garnering the lion’s share of attention from the major parties. Corangamite received a se-

ries of political visitors from both sides over the past few weeks, many bearing funding announcements. Incumbent Liberal MP Sarah Henderson is in a tight battle with Labor candidate Libby Coker and both hosted party leaders. The Liberals have a 4.2 per cent margin in Corangamite but Labor front-bencher Richard Marles holds Corio with an edge of 13.5 per cent. Before Thursday’s cut-off, Mr Lyons had refused to rule out standing as an independent, which could have reduced Labor’s hold on Corio with a likely preference swap between him and Liberal candidate Richard Lange. Mr Lange said his campaign would remain unchanged despite Mr Lyons’ absence as a candidate. “Nothing changes, we still want to make Corio matter,” Mr Lange said. Continued page 11

Geelong ‘confusion’ over convention centre leader By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s long-awaited convention centre is mired in bureaucracy, with key stakeholders confused about who should be the proposal’s lead agency. They agree only that Deakin University’s waterfront car park site is the obvious, logical choice for the centre. Some pointed to the State Government-appointed Geelong Authority as responsible for leading the development of the centre but as a planning agency it can only respond to applications. The authority is also hamstrung after losing its chair Peter Dorling when the government seconded him to the team of three City Hall administrators after sacking Geelong’s council. The convention centre situation was “extraordinary” said Liberal South Barwon MP Andrew Katos.
“I can’t believe that after a year and a half no one from government has spoken to Deakin about this.” Two weeks ago Western Victorian MP Simon Ramsay called on the government to consider compulsorily acquiring the site. Deakin vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander said in response that she would consider any “sensible” plan to use the car park for a Geelong convention centre. But the university had yet to receive any “offer” for the prime site or see any proposal for the longproposed convention centre, she told the Indy. Premier Daniel Andrews established the Geelong Authority almost a year ago saying it would “break the deadlock that has delayed and hindered the major projects that Geelong needs”. Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Bernadette Uzelac said it was time for the government to take action on the project. “Geelong is being held back and missing out
on key opportunities to benefit from the massive national convention and conference market,” Ms Uzelac said. “The convention centre is a game-changer for our city and it needs urgent prioritisation to get on with the business case. “Until that happens we’re really in a stalemate situation with this project and unable to move forward. “I call upon Geelong’s leaders and State Government representatives to advocate strongly for the release of funding required to complete the business case and turn this project into a reality.” Acting head of regional alliance lobby G21 Janice Lane said Deakin would probably be “formally approached” as part of a Geelong Authority feasibility study and business case. The Indy sought clarification from the government on Mr Dorling’s replacement but did not receive a reply before going to press.
The dazzling dance moves that make all the difference A unique dance class for children with Down’s Syndrome hopes to move boundaries as well as bodies. Sarah Marshall, general manager of e.motion21 Geelong, said challenging stereotypes was as important as offering exercise through dance. “Through performances our dancers are demonstrating to the broader community that people with Down’s Syndrome can achieve amazing things given the right environment,” Ms Marshall said. “Current statistics show that Down’s Syndrome is the largest cause of intellectual disability in Australian children and there are about 4000 people living with it in Victoria today. “Often these individuals are shut out from opportunities to participate in activities many of us take for granted.” “People with Down’s Syndrome are all friends, siblings, employees and volunteers but they also appreciate being together in their own social group. Ms Marshall said children with Down’s Syndrome often made a “meaningful connection” with each other that was rarely replicated in other groups. “We put on a performance at the end of every school term and also perform at mainstream events, such as Pako Festa,” she said. “Everyone with Down’s Syndrome has the opportunity to come along and dance. We modify and mix the styles up a bit. “We would love to get guest dance teachers from around the region who can come along and teach people with Down’s Syndrome.” e.motion21 CEO Claire Vissenga said the organisation began in Kew in 2009 with six dancers and had expanded to 200 dancers at four metropolitan areas as well as to Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. “Geelong has over 30 dancers, participating in dance and fitness classes each week ranging in age from four-year-olds to dancers in their late 30s.” Contact Sarah Marshall on 0439 144 360 or visit emotion21.org.au

Ice boost A $4 million funding injection will help reduce demand for ice while supporting local rehabilitation services for the drug in Geelong, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has announced. The package would also cut “addict-based crime” across the region through the provision of additional rehabilitation opportunities, she said.
Ram arrest Police have arrested a Horsham man in relation to a ram-raid burglary of a Drysdale’s Surf Junction shop on 9 May. Police thanked the community for its assistance in helping the investigation track down the 21-year-old.
Gordon upgrade A $10 million “redevelopment” will deliver a new library and students’ hub to The Gordon Institute of TAFE’s city campus, the Andrews government has announced. The State Government’s matching funding commitments would also pay for an upgrade of the Gordon’s main building on the corner of Latrobe Terrace and Gordon Avenue, said Victorian Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert.
Stadium deal Basketball Geelong has reached agreement with Christian College to build a stadium on its senior campus at Waurn Ponds. The proposal now needed a $15 million federal funding commitment before next month’s election, said Basketball Geelong’s Dean Anglin.

Unhappy campers petition
Storages 'flatline' despite rain, pipe
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Geelong’s water storages have failed to recover despite recent above-average rain and a new pipeline bringing additional supplies from Melbourne. Barwon Water measured storage capacity on Wednesday at 32.2 per cent, unchanged since the start of May when levels bottomed out after eight months of decline. Only several months of above-average rain would produce a “marked increase” in the storage levels, said Barwon Water managing director Joe Adamski. “A long period of low rainfall and warm conditions mean Geelong’s catchments are dry, resulting in less runoff following rainfall,” he said. Barwon Water recently eased restrictions at Colac, Lorne and Apollo Bay but Mr Adamski said Geelong’s larger storages required greater volumes of rain to “show signs of recovery”. “The coastal and Colac storages show a rapid response because they are smaller, fill more quickly and require less inflow to do so.” Geelong’s main catchment received 247mm of rain last month, compared to May’s monthly average of 154mm. June had recorded 36mm so far compared to the 190mm average. Back-up sources, including the MelbourneGeelong pipeline, “would not result in a spike in overall storage levels”, Mr Adamski said. “What these sources do is provide a steady supply that will arrest any further drop in storage levels.” However, long-range forecasts promised a soaking over the next few months, said Geelong Weather Services’ Lindsay Smail. Forecasters expected above-average winter and spring rain, Mr Smail said. The May rain had dampened local soil to enhance prospects for higher storage levels, he said. “Any good rain from now on should result in runoff.” Mr Smail forecast scattered showers over the next seven days.
Campers and tourism businesses want answers on a management takeover of Anglesea’s awardwinning caravan park. Foreshore manager Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) will take back Anglesea Beachfront Family Caravan Park’s expiring Crown Land lease on 1 December 2017. The Morris family has managed the park for 20 years and planned to add an aquatic centre. GORCC announced the takeover after a lease tender process failed to “find an acceptable proposal for the value of the site”. The family raised concerns about landlord GORCC managing the Anglesea tender while operating competing caravan parks at Lorne and Torquay. A community forum will seek explanations at Anglesea Bowling Club from 11am Sunday. Invitations said a GORCC representative would attend to help explain the lease tender process, the future of the caravan park and the takeover’s impact on Anglesea. Business and Tourism Anglesea (BATA) president Raelene Fordham slammed the takeover. “We’re disappointed that a fellow businessperson, who is also a vice-president of BATA, is facing losing his livelihood,” Ms Fordham said. “We recognise the right of the landowner GORCC to take back the management of the park but we want to ensure the level of customer service and delivery of services doesn’t become diminished with the change. “At the end of the day, if the occupancy rate in the park suffers it affects more than just the income to GORCC. “It affects traders who have just had $1 million taken out of economy with the loss of Alcoa. “That park is one of Anglesea’s biggest assets and we have to protect what made it a success.” A park camper’s petition supporting the Morris family’s management to continue had yesterday attracted 3492 supporters toward its target of 5000.

AWARDED: The Anglesea Beachfront Caravan Park team. “We respectably request that the Minister for Environment personally intervenes in this matter, sets aside the tender and instructs an independent State Government authority to enter into meaningful negotiations with the current lessee for a new Crown Land lease,” the petition said. Petition supporter Jan Wilson wrote: “Shame on you GORCC to think that you could even begin to have the passion and dedication and above all the personal empathy that the Morris family have had over many years at this amazing family caravan park.
GORCC was committed to “maintaining the park to at least its current standards”, said chief executive Richard Davies. The takeover transition would leave campers, visitors and permit-holders unaffected, he said “It will retain local business and tourism arrangements and commit to no jobs losses. GORCC will meet with staff to discuss options. “The Morris family have made an enormous contribution to the Anglesea community and have developed a wonderful park on Crown Land.”

MOOVING IN: Collendina’s new retirement village residents.
They’re the perfect neighbours: no loud parties, the grass is kept tidy and neighbourhood crime has receded since they arrived. Who wouldn’t want cows next door? That’s the opinion of residents living around Collendina’s abandoned Bonnyvale Road retirement village where a herd of belted Galloways has wandered into the residence from nearby paddocks since the village’s grass was eliminated as a fire hazard and graffiti vandals disappeared, the cows’ owner told the Ocean Grove Voice newspaper. Bill Steains said the site’s owner had given his blessing to the new tenants. And the neighbours must be udderly delighted!

“Civic leaders” apparently want the Andrews government to break its promise of restoring a democratically elected council to Geelong in October 2017. And, according to a news report this Natalie Hutchins week, Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins (pictured) is taking their considered concerns very seriously. “I’ve already had people raise with me … that they feel the length of time for the administrators is insufficient, that they’d like to see a longer timeframe,” she was reported to have said. So who are these “civic leaders”? Well, the report later identified them as “leaders from the real estate and social welfare sectors” who “used a meeting with Ms Hutchins to raise their concerns”. With all respects to real estate agents and social workers, Geelong must be seriously lacking in “civic leaders”. Which is what happens when you sack a council, eh Ms Hutchins.

Ms Carson’s implied support of the Government’s preferred longer stint for administrators happily coincided with some welcome taxpayer largesse toward the committee’s pet program. Just a page over from the “civic leaders“ story was a report that the Andrews government would give $800,000 to the Geelong Community Leadership Program, which the committee established 10 years ago. Double Take would hope the substantial investment could provide at least some “civic leaders” but can’t recall any of the annual program’s many graduates ever being elected to council.

To be fair, the report also identified another “civic leader” of sorts - Rebecca Casson, the chief of private lobby group Committee for Geelong. Ms Casson (pictured) was also quoted sharing the concerns of the unidentified real estate agents and social workers. The committee would seek a parliamentary extension of City Hall’s three administrators, she warned, “if we believe more time is needed”. Her words might make Geelong wonder who the committee repre- Rebecca Casson sents since it was only overwhelming public anger that forced the Government to slash its initial timeframe for restoration of an elected council. Dumped ferry’s deadline By LUKE VOOGT The owner of a ferry dumped on Corio Bay must reveal their plans for the vessel by 16 June, according to Victoria’s channels authority. Victorian Regional Channels Authority (VRCA) set the deadline after moving the Queen of Melbourne to Corio Quay last month. The ferry had sat disused at anchor on the bay for nearly a year. VRCA commercial manager Kas Szakiel said a disused meatworks wharf at Corio Quay South was the safest available location for the ferry. Leaving the ferry in the bay at the mercy of
winter storms was “too dangerous,” he said. “The biggest fear for us was that it could break its anchor and damage other objects.” The VRCA was struggling to determine whether the ferry had a new owner, Mr Szakiel said. He had been dealing with Farooq Qamar who owned the ferry when it arrived on the bay but was now in talks with a second man, Ahmad Ayad. “We’re trying to find that out (the ferry ownership),” Mr Szakiel said. Berthing the ferry cost the VCRA nothing but it had incurred engineering and legal costs from
preparing the wharf and trying to determine the ferry’s future, he said. Mr Szakiel was unable to rule out seizing the vessel if the owner failed to meet the deadline. “I’m not a lawyer, so I wouldn’t rule anything in or out.” The Queen of Melbourne has had a troublesome history since Mr Qamar bought it in Norway for $300,000 in 2014. A standoff between Mr Qamar and ship’s captain Stephan Tate left the ferry stranded on the bay in May last year.
Love me tender, pleads firm seeking $120m contract A Geelong firm has released new images of a $110 million office it wants to build for two government agencies in the central city area. Techne Development believes it has an “exciting vision” for the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and Department of Human Services (DHS). The building would incorporate the disused Carlton Hotel in a nine-level building with 166 spaces of underground parking. “We’re sitting in the bullseye in terms of location,” Techne’s Scott Vickers-Willis said. “Both WorkSafe and NDIA wanted to be as close to the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) as possible, effectively creating an insurance precinct of excellence. With the Carlton project sitting directly between the TAC and the future Worksafe headquarters, we’re uniquely placed to literally be in the best position possible.” The project would create hundreds of jobs during construction and an ongoing annual benefit of $90 million for Geelong’s economy, Mr Vickers-Willis said. He expected the government to complete the tender process “in coming months”.
UPSIDE: An open court is a feature.
REVEALED: New concept imagery of the local proposal to house the NDIA and DHS in central Geelong.

Fine, conviction for bullying teen Two years of bullying a teenage apprentice has cost a builder a $12,500 fine in Geelong Magistrates’ Court. Wayne Allan Dennert, of Bell Post Hill, was also convicted and ordered to pay costs of $758 after pleading guilty to offences rolled up to a single charge under the OHS Act. The court heard that Dennert's Quality Carpentry and Building Maintenance employed the victim as a 16-year-old in 2013 until he left in April 2015. Dennert encouraged bullying of the teen that included putting a live mouse down the back of his shirt, drenching him with water, spitting on him and putting adhesive in his hair. The court heard that Dennert: ripped the apprentice's work shorts; put a rag doused in methylated spirits over his mouth; held hot drill saw bits and baton screws to his bare skin; slapped his leg with a piece of timber; scraped sandpaper across his face and smeared it with plaster. Dennert also regularly called the boy derogatory names and questioned him about his sex life, the court heard. The teenager told the court he sometimes retaliated or participated in bullying exchanges because Dennert would harrass him if he appeared upstet. His victim impact statement said he continued suffering anxiety, depression, nightmares and insomnia. “I'd rather be burnt, bruised, assaulted, drenched in glue, water, paint, weeks’ old coffee and spat on all over again than to relive a week of the psychological torment I endured,” he told the court. WorkSafe’s Marnie Williams called Dennert’s behaviour appalling. “No employee should have to suffer such cruel, vicious and repeated behaviour at work, particularly a young man just starting his working life," she said. "Because of their inexperience, young workers are particularly vulnerable to psychological and physical risks in the workplace, which is why supervisors and employers must take a real interest in their health and safety.”

Dream kept alive By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A little club in Geelong is keeping a gold medal dream alive for athletes with a disability. Despite its small size, Geelong Boccia Club has two athletes, Danny Byrne and Tyler Ellis, already nominated for the squad for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. President Julie Morton said other club members had participated at national level. “There’s little opportunity for people with disabilities to participate in a sport recognised at Paralympic level in Geelong,” Julie said. “There are lots of programs and activities, but this a serious mainstream sport and requires a level of professionalism in athletes that members enjoy. “It enables them to have a go and they are treated as serious athletes with pathways to national and international competition.”
Boccia is a game based upon the game bocce, specifically designed for people with a disability. Julie said the club recently won a grant from VicHealth to help it buy extra equipment to increase player capacity. “There are many benefits of the game, including strong physiological and psychological benefits like socialisation and forming friendships,” Julie said. “Many players have cerebral palsy and a game requiring a high level of co-ordination is really good for the management of that condition. “We just want to get the message out so more people with a disability in Geelong can have an opportunity to play.” Geelong Boccia Club trains weekly at the Geelong Basketball Netball Centre. Contact Julie on 0439 979 636, email bocciageelong@outlook.com or check the club’s Facebook page Boccia Geelong.

Schools banning juice, milk types Local schools are banning parents from putting fruit juice and flavoured milk in their children’s lunch boxes in line with a Barwon Health crackdown on “sugary drinks”. Eleven primary schools now allow only water or white milk after joining the H2Only campaign, Barwon Health said. The campaign, in partnership with Barwon Water, encouraged primary schools to “adopt a healthy drink policy”. Highton, Oberon, Tate Street, Newtown, Ceres, Roslyn, South Geelong, Herne Hill, St Margaret’s, Geelong East and Geelong Baptist College primary schools were the 11 on board so far, Barwon Health said. The schools had four “exception days” annually for activities such as allowing orange cordial on Harmony Day or hot Milo for midwinter fundraisers, explained Barwon Health’s health promotion officer Susan Parker. “As each school day begins, parents hope that their child will be happy and get the most out of all that school offers. “Here in Geelong we have found that around 86 per cent of families already provide only water for their child at school so we know that the vast majority of parents here want this sort of environment for their children. We want parents to encourage their child’s school to consider a water only environment - it’s easier, cheaper and it is so much better for their child’s health.”
Barwon Health announced its own ban on the sale of sugary drinks in May. Now it wanted to help more schools “implement the H2Only initiative”, Ms Parker said. “We understand that each school faces its own challenges and we are happy to help wherever we can.” Highton Primary School principal Tony Gove said parents thought the school’s ban on sugary drinks was “great”. “When we have tours or open days and we tell them that we are a water-only school they think it’s great and is a point in our favour,” he said. “Students have less sugar now so we hope they are not having the peaks and troughs and that their learning is more steady. Having only water to drink is a significant part of that. “It was really simple to implement the change to water only. The kids just accepted it and many parents were already providing water for their child to drink. “Our families wouldn’t let us go back. It’s easier and cheaper and clear. “It would actually be harder to re-introduce sweet drinks than it was to go water-only.” Oberon Primary School principal Andrew Augerinos said the opinions of parents had “definitely changed” since the drink bans. “They are now much more supportive. It’s gone from being something that’s ‘OK, we’ll do that’ to ‘it’s a really great idea, it works really well’.

Life skills while fashioning a cause Fashion and mentoring refugee students are usually worlds apart but a style extravaganza next week will bring the two together. Organised by Business and Professional Women (BPW) Geelong, the fashion show features top frocks, shoes and headwear from leading Pakington Street boutiques. BPW Geelong President Belinda Lyle said funds raised by the fashion spectacular would go to BPW’s structured two-year student mentoring program which supports selected students in Years 11 and 12 at North Geelong Secondary College. “Our current program supports seven young ladies who are refugees from the Thailand-Burma border,” Ms Lyle said. “With English as a second language, cultural differences and financial challenges, VCE is hard enough without some of the added pressures these young women have in their lives. “These girls need structure and guidance and we tackle subjects such as personal hygiene, diet, study skills, how to start a conversation, public speaking, motivation, goal setting and relaxation techniques.” Ms Lyle said students attended monthly BPW events and had the opportunity to network with women of all ages from small business owners through to corporate executives. 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 10 June, 2016
“Upon graduation, students are treated to having their hair and make-up done, going shopping for clothes suitable for work, and having professional headshots taken by Pam Hutchinson Photography. “We have been funding the mentoring program for some time but with an additional number of students coming on board this year, we are seeking financial support from local businesses and organisations.” The Ageless Beauty, Fashion and Style show will be emceed by personal stylist Emma Murphy of Style Duo. Pakington Street stores supporting the show include Harley and Me Boutique which will be showing its exclusive range and The Laboratory with trendy brands including Alessi, Ellis and Dewey. Designer outfits from Benning Boutique with well-known brands such as Mela Purdie, Verge and Anthea Crawford will also be on show. Sergio Fashionable Italian Shoes, the stunning headwear collection from Alice Goes Out and make-up tips from Flawless Beauty Concept will be on display. DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
Your vote will help shape Australia.

Actress is having the time of her life Torquay actress Amy Price has returned home from her Los Angeles base to promote an award winning independent Australian film, How to Time Travel. The film won Best Guerrilla Film at Melbourne Underground Film Festival, with all proceeds to be donated to Beyondblue to support people affected by mental illness. Amy, featured on the cover of the 2014 summer edition of GC Magazine, said she was excited to be home for the first time since her move to LA. “It’s great to be back in familiar territory. I’ve been living in LA for more than a year now and I’m so excited to be able to continue working on Australian projects,” Amy said. “This film is incredibly humorous and quirky, which is great for me because I’ve always gravitated towards making people laugh. “I’m hopeless at telling jokes, so comedic characters are a fantastic way to do what I love.
“The proceeds of the film will be donated to Beyondblue which is a not-for-profit that is incredibly close to my heart. Having experienced anxiety myself, I know how important it is to seek support and it’s great to be able to give back.” The film centres on a character called Jones who proposes to his girlfriend Olivia, only to receive the worst possible reply: No. Unable to handle the heartbreak, Jones invents a time machine to travel back and fix the dire complications within the relationship. But when the time machine becomes operational, friendships, loyalty and love are tested. “The LA movie and television scene can be a difficult market to crack. I’ve been fortunate enough to get my foot in the door and I will continue auditioning for projects that I can be proud of,” Amy said. How to Time Travel is available to rent or buy online.

Mail job lost for wait of months By LUKE VOOGT Waits for mail lasting up to 12 weeks have infuriated Torquay residents and put a post contractor out of work. Corinne Nigro, a Torquay Commerce and Tourism committee member, said she and other residents in her street had been waiting months for some mail. Her elderly father’s Centrelink assessment arrived on 3 June but was postmarked 16 March. He wanted to move from a nursing facility into a new home but needed the four-page assessment first, she said. “Being Centrelink they couldn’t email it,” Ms Nigro said. “Now he’s in jeopardy of losing his place in the list.” A neighbour received a car registration notice a month after it was due and another had a CityLink account disconnected twice due to overdue payments from late mail, Ms Nigro said. Other residents also reported significant mail delays, including shire rates and Barwon Water bills arriving after due dates. “I can understand that everything is moving to email nowadays but people like my father still want to receive their mail. “We pay the extra fee to get it mailed so it’s unfair if Australia Post is not delivering it on time.” Australia Post said a subcontractor was failing to deliver on time in areas near The Sands and Wombah Park estates. “We became aware of this two weeks ago after receiving community feedback,” a spokesperson said. “We have since dismissed the subcontractor and alternative delivery arrangements are in place.”
Lyons shuns Corio From page 1 “We’ll focus on fact Corio has had 10 years of Mr Marles in the seat and it’s time to change. “I want to be a strong advocate in government and represent local issues and try and make a difference. If I win I can do that. “If Mr Lyons is not running it will be a tougher job but I can still advocate for Corio. I just get to run a bit harder.” Mr Marles said he was concentrating on his candidacy for Corio. “I’m talking to people about the positive plans Labor has in health and jobs and I’ve always welcomed anyone else who wants to participate in the discussion by nominating. “I’m less concerned about who nominates and thinking more about my own message and my relationship with the electors of Corio.”
We’re all on this ageing journey together. What’s most important is that we don’t lose the one thing that really matters, just to get the care we all eventually need. I mean, what’s life without freedom – the everyday freedom to come and go and be and do as you please in the privacy and comfort of your own home. Why live alone when you can surround yourself with wonderful new friends in a vibrant, caring community that celebrates every day to the full and treats you with all the kindness, decency, love and respect you deserve. That’s what I call freedom. If you would like to know how this can be a wonderful time of life, visit 6-12 Matthews St Grovedale or call 1800 984 840 today.

Loans in all our interests It was extremely encouraging to read about the no-interest loans for people in Geelong on low incomes (Geelong Indy, 3 June). I was alarmed to learn how much interest payday lenders are charging those facing desperate situations. Medical services, dentist appointments, school textbooks and computers, fridges, washing machines and furniture are all an essential part of contemporary life. Sadly, it is understandable that low-income families will not always be in a position to pay for these basic needs. I applaud the Geelong No-Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) for the wonderful service it is providing the many who are living on tight budgets in our city. I also thank the Geelong Indy for helping spread the important message that this service is readily available in Geelong for those facing financial emergencies. Robert Van Zetten Highton
Penguins need CCTV too Simon Ramsay MP unfairly suggested that Lisa Neville’s funding to protect penguins with CCTV footage was due to her fascination with them (Letters, 27 May). He failed to mention two horrific attacks on these defenceless penguins which were kicked and stomped to death in disturbing attacks. He made a valid point about funding needed for protection of her electorate from crime but Ms Neville took action to protect our precious penguins. While Mr Ramsay might think we humans are superior to penguins, we are not superior in our ability to feel pain and suffering. I suggest that penguins are even more in need since they do not understand this violence. Well done, Ms Neville. Jaimie Overend, Animal Justice Party candidate for Corio.
Money for nothing The letter headlined ‘Give it away now’ in the 3 June Geelong Indy stated that both Liberal and Labor parties had slashed more than $11 billion from Australia’s overseas aid budget over several years. It’s my understanding that part of the “slashed" $11 billion assisted thousands of refugees to come to Australia. Prior to giving hundreds of millions of dollars to various countries every year, the Australian Government should send representatives to them to justify where all the money was spent the previous year. This would ensure the accountability of the foreign countries, some of which are widely known for corruption. Families are starving in many countries. It is heart-breaking to see babes and children starving and without a home. Isn’t it time the men and women of impoverished countries reduced their birth rates to stop bringing poor babies into a world where they will possibly starve to death. I am all for helping the poor but they must also be accountable and help themselves. P Ward Geelong Highton
Premier burning volunteers Under a United Firefighters Union (UFU) enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) proposal, Lara’s volunteer CFA brigade would become an integrated station. But Lara volunteers say their station will become segregated rather than integrated. Lara’s is one of many volunteer fire brigades
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 facing the new integrated model across Victoria. I raised this with the Premier in parliament after meeting with brigade members alongside Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos and Liberal candidate for Corio Richard Lange on Monday night. The volunteers raised concerns with the proposed integration model, under which Lara would become a mix of career and unpaid staff, much like the Ocean Grove, Belmont, Corio and Geelong City brigades. Under the proposed EBA, a brigade will not be able to attend a fire unless a further three careerbased fire-fighters from another brigade arrive on the fire-ground. Lara volunteers would also be banned from using particular doors and rooms in their station, which they helped build through sausage sizzles and chook raffles. The Lara brigade has courageously raised these concerns, despite pressure from both CFA management and the United Firefighters Union to keep silent. The brigade is concerned the power of veto will diminish the role of the CFA chief fire officer and hand control to career-based staff, regardless of seniority. The Premier has a duty to explain to brigades like Lara that the EBA will not compromise volunteers’ ability to do what they have always done in protecting regional communities. Lefties’ government growth We know it's election time by the number of politicians’ same-old-same-old letters, lolly offers and lazy ads at our expense. Some of us just hanker for some substance and solid, reliable evidence of good use of public money. But where in the world do we look? Thinking people don’t want more of the same old lefty stuff from last time about the Coalition’s poor economic management at the world level or some treasurer they had that was, well, all right. Come down to Earth, please. Tell us just one thing that Libby Croker will do to gain some real credibility with small industry in the district. Still paying for ALP/Greens Australia’s debt is close to $400 billion and rising. The previous ALP/Greens government had an appalling record of managing Australia’s finances. They spent a $20 billion surplus left by the Howard Government and threw away many billions of dollars on outrageous non-productive spending. They made legislated commitments increasing Australia’s debt to $300 billion before being voted out in 2013. Labor leader Bill Shorten says the ALP has changed its ways yet he’s making promises to win votes by spending many billions of dollars of borrowed money on his proposed policies. The debt situation will increase even more when they allow many thousands of illegal boat people to enter our country. Mr Shorten’s promises mean more spending, more taxes and greater debt. The ALP and Greens have not learned from their past mistakes. They cannot be trusted to manage our country’s finances again. Cor Udan Belmont

WHERE ARE WE?
Ninth Island Pinot Noir & Chardonnay 2015
Hoddles Creek Yarra Valley Chardonnay & Pinot Noir 2015
The popularity of Tasmania as a wine region continues to grow and one label in particular - Ninth Island, has really established itself as one of the premium value for money producers to come out of the north coast of Tasmania. The 2015 vintage in these regions was near almost perfect with well balanced ripe flavour profiles and aromatics, alongside fine acids contributing to the structure of the wines overall.
With the latest release of the much anticipated and eagerly awaited 2015 Hoddles Creek Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines having now arrived, I must say it feels a bit like ground hog day… cracking vintage (again), cracking wines (again), and cracking price (again!)… they tick, tick, tick all the right boxes and that’s why we love ‘em.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Funnyman Dave back for charity By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Comedy and casseroles are an unusual combination, but Geelong comedian Dave Thornton is happy to share. Back in his hometown for a charity gig, the funnyman hopes to have his audience “joking” on their casseroles as funds are raised for Barwon Health Foundation’s Giving Weekend. As well as the show, attendees are assured of a tasty casserole dinner. Thornton admitted he was looking forward to performing in his old hometown. “Having been born and bred in Geelong, I am thrilled to be performing a stand-up comedy show back in my old hood of G-troit,” Thornton declared. “I recommend everyone to book a seat, or a table, for what will be a fun night will all proceeds going to a good cause. “I can guarantee two things on the night – we’ll all have a laugh, enjoy ourselves and raise money. “I can also guarantee I’m not good with numbers,” he quipped. Thornton’s show for the this year’s Melbourne International Comedy festival, So On and So Forth, followed on from previous sold-out shows. “My last show was heaps of fun, I think this one will be too. The previous one sold out. That sounds like bragging but I don’t know any other way to explain to you that audiences seemed to like it,” Thornton explained. “I’m also the Dave in Fifi and Dave, a radio show that happens in Melbourne 6am-9am weekdays on Hit1019 The Fox. I get up at 4.30am every day. Am I a hero? Draw your own conclusions.” Thornton quickly adds that he is not. “I’m only touring domestically this year but I’ve done gigs in Edinburgh, Montreal, South Africa and
lots of other places that require a long haul flight. “In conclusion, I really like doing stand-up comedy and if you come and see me I reckon you’ll have a good time.” Thornton grew up in Geelong, attended Belmont High and studied at Gordon Institute, forever marking him as a Cats country original. The Comedy and Casseroles night has been organised by Our Women Our Children, an organisation that fund-raises for women and children’s services at Barwon Health. Volunteers president Monique Holmes-Richardson said the group was thrilled to have Thornton headline the event. “Having Dave at our event is a wonderful opportunity for our group to promote the work we do within the Geelong community, keeping our fundraising money local.” Ms Richardson said the group ran events and activities year round to provide equipment and services within a nominated area of the health service. In the past the group has supported the emergency department, the McKellar Centre and children’s ward. Giving Weekend will be held on 17 and 18 June and accepts donations and volunteer time for #ProjectLove to fund the redevelopment of the Andrew Love Cancer Centre. “Each year 2400 people in the region are diagnosed with cancer so the redevelopment of the chemotherapy day ward and oncology pharmacy is desperately needed to keep up with the demand on services,” Ms Richardson said. Comedy and Casseroles is on 18 June at 7pm at the Ukranian Hall, Pakington Street, Geelong West. Tickets are $50 and include show and casserole dinner. For tickets contact Barwon Health Foundation on 4215 8900.
ONLY JOKING: Dave Thornton is giving it all he’s got.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Box-office-busting blarney IMAGINATION: The Little Prince will open young minds.
The princely view Much loved children’s story The Little Prince comes to Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Drama Theatre this month, sparking young imaginations with its timeless message about the importance of friendship. The Little Prince is an adventure story that celebrates the richness of human feeling and imagination. Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s acclaimed production is adapted by Simon Clarke from the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and presented as part of the 2016 Love Central Geelong Family Magic program. One of the most widely read books in history, The Little Prince has sold 140 million copies worldwide and been printed in more than 250 languages and dialects and also in Braille. Saint-Exupéry’s exquisite tale tells the story of a curious prince who leaves his tiny home planet and journeys across the universe, discovering that adults have very strange ideas about the things that really matter. At 50 minutes and suitable for ages four and above, The Little Prince is a special experience for families to share. The production comes to GPAC for two performances only, on 18 June at noon and 2.30pm. Tickets for The Little Prince are $20 each or $18 for groups of four or more. Book online at gpac.org.au or phone 5225 1200.
FOR LAUGHS: Jimeoin brings his own brand of humour to the Gateway Hotel on June 23.
What’sat on
1229804-PB23-16
No one could accuse Jimeoin of resting on his laurels. The stand-up comedian who still makes great use of his Irish brogue has done it all in his lengthy career but he’s always ready for the next gig. He regularly sells out shows and smashes boxoffice records around Australia and internationally. He’s starred in his own feature film, 1999’s The Craic, drawing in strong crowds for its theatrical release, second only to The Matrix in his native Ireland. Never a man to sit still in his career for long, he is forever doing gigs, trying new things and, basically, just having a laugh. But perhaps the real reason lies in his love of fishing and golfing as his constant touring enables him to check out and experience new outdoor adventures. It’s his propensity to laugh at himself as well as point out his observations of the absurdities of every-day life that has endeared him to audiences, live and on the screen. It’s being out and about and relating to people that offers him the greatest source of material for new shows. If it has anything to do with comedy - and sometimes even if it doesn’t - Jimeoin has been there. He’s a regular at the Adelaide, Melbourne, NZ Montreal and Edinburgh Comedy Festivals and starred on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. Jimeoin’s three series of his hit self-titled show on the Seven Network are still fondly recalled, consistently winning the ratings in 1994 and 1995. The comedian has gone out of his way to play out of the way regions, touring the Outback and Top End playing a mix of hotels, theatres, swimming pools, cattle ranches and anywhere that looked a bit interesting. His comedic tea-towel travelogues also proved popular, both in Australia and Ireland. Jimeoin brings his unique brand of wit and charming observations to the Gateway Hotel, Corio, on 23 June.

FROM THE MANAGEMENT & STAFF PLEASE DON’T DRINK & DRIVE, USE OUR
COURTESY BUS Charity ball in your piggy jim-jams It’s the event to have when not having an event. The Karingal Foundation has come up with a quirky twist on a fund-raiser in the depths of winter when no-one wants to get dressed up and brave the cold, rain and wind to go out. But they still hope the non-event will raise plenty of dollars as non-attendees pay for the privilege of staying at home. “The Rotary Club of Geelong East and the Karingal Foundation are delighted to announce that the Winter Ball will not be held in Geelong on 25 June,” declared the non-invitation. Uninvited guests were still invited to make a donation from $15 all the way to the equivalent of a table of 10 absent partygoers. The concept raises all sorts of metaphysical questions such as if a gala is organised but no one comes, does everyone still have a ball?
But organisers hope the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing the funds will go towards building the outdoor area of the Eastern Hub Geelong will be sufficient. Karingal Foundation executive officer Caroline Moore said the Winter Ball was the perfect way to enjoy a quiet night in. “People lead busy lives these days and with overflowing social calendars, this non-event is an opportunity to support a worthy cause without all the hassle,” she said. “You can be rugged up on the couch on 25 June knowing you don’t have to venture out to an event because you’ve already played your part in giving back to the community.” Non-attendees can visit trybooking.com/ KZFY to book.

Mauritius-born chef Bryan Seeborun is bringing the flavours of Europe to Croatian Club Geelong. The club’s head chef says he’s inspired by his travels and working at restaurants around Europe. Bryan’s family migrated to England in 2000. He travelled across the channel, after graduating university in 2004, working as head chef at a Michelin Star restaurant in the south of France. He returned to England a year later working as a chef in Kent, and cooking for the Ministry of Defence, among other jobs. He travelled to Australia in 2014 and liked the country so much he moved to Broken Hill that October. He moved to Torquay this year, starting at the Croatian Club in March. “This place was a big opportunity to put my skills on show and so far I’m very happy,” he said. Bryan says Croatian Fish Night on Friday is a
big event for regulars, with hundreds crowding the bistro. “It’s a very friendly community and they really welcomed me even though I’ve got a different background,” he said. Bryan’s created a new menu for the club, which includes Croatian favourites such as sarma, cevapcici and goulash. He’s also got the Aussie pub staples covered, with schnitzels on Tuesday, steaks on Wednesday and roast on Sunday. Bryan’s looking forward to this month’s Euro 2016 and hopes to watch a few of the games which the club will televise live. “I played for my national (Mauritius) under 21 team, before I got injured,” he says. The club is open Tuesday to Friday, 12pm to 2pm and 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and Sunday 12pm to 2.30pm.

Viva Energy Australia intends to invest $350 million in its Geelong refinery over the next five years. $100 million of this investment will be spent this year on major maintenance and upgrade works. These works are designed to continue reliable and efficient operations for the refinery for years to come.
Viva Energy is committed to minimising any impact on the community as a result of these works and been working with the EPA on this project. However, at times and depending on the weather, you may notice some odour or additional noise at the end of the works:

LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Trusty experts in Geelong for servicing Euro vehicle brands Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

SPORT Scott brothers to face off
School salmon taking the bait
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
ON THE BITE
Geelong coach Christ Scott tends to shy away from the “season-defining” designation but Saturday’s game against twin brother Brad and his Kangaroos will have great bearing on the top four. The Cats find themselves in the game of the round again, albeit with the Giants-Swans and Eagles-Crows games also holding finals consequences. North Melbourne knows it must secure a topfour berth to enable it to get over the preliminary final humps of the past two years. A win over Geelong would significantly boost those hopes and perhaps even grant North flag favouritism with the unconvinced bookies. But a Cats victory would lift their chances considerably and put a decent dent in North Melbourne’s prospects, otherwise known as a winwin. Not only does North have Geelong to contend with, it follows up with games against Hawthorn, Adelaide and West Coast so a loss could be compounded over those rounds. On the other hand the tight ladder means the Cats could fall from third to seventh with another loss. Geelong already shares its win points of
Chris Pitman Corio Bay hosted large schools of Australian salmon over the past week. Lures cast from boats into surface commotion caught fish to 45cm, while landbased anglers also got into the action when the fish pushed right up to the rocks at St Helens on Sunday afternoon. Corio Bay also produced excellent numbers of garfish at St Helens and Limburner’s Point, although few winter snapper were caught. Portarlington Pier remained solid for whiting off the rocks and inside the harbour, with salmon also caught. St Leonard’s was still hot for bag-limit catches of whiting, along with squid to almost 1kg down toward Swan Bay. Surf Coast beach and rock platforms held big salmon. Lures accounted for fish reaching 2.5kg at Bancoora Beach, while the rocks west of Lorne had similar-sized fish but in greater numbers. Tackleworld Geelong’s Kevin Hunter fished with Daniel Sparks off Port Fairy where they first encountered tuna in 70m while slow-trolling Rapala X-rap 10s. They caught numerous southern bluefin to 13.62kg, with some of the fish also taking smaller skirted lures. I ventured to Port Fairy with Michael Moore, Peri Stavropoulos and Josh Whitford. After a bumpy trip out to 70m we connected with our first tuna before the complete spread of rods hit the water. For the next hour or so we boated and released numerous fish, which took a variety of lures from Rapala X-Rap 20s to small skirted models. Trent Schiller also fished down the south-west, banking some well-conditioned estuary perch on surface lures. On the freshwater front, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir entertained Michael Evans with a 45cm redfin that took a Norries Metal Wasaby cast from the rock wall. West Barwon Reservoir’s east and west arms produced brown trout of 2kg on plastics. Andrew Orchard caught a brown of 55cm and 1.4kg from the rock wall with a Daiwa Double Clutch on Monday afternoon. Lake Purrumbete began producing quality brown trout on trolled hard-body lures at first and last light. Tony Hinds travelled up to Copeton Dam for seriously big cod reaching 110cm while casting lures from his boat. Tony said the dam’s water level was down almost 1m. Next week looks favourable for tuna out of Port Fairy or Portland, while casting lures in the surf closer to home should produce salmon to 2.5kg.
NO LOVE LOST: Chris Scott will face twin brother Brad over the coaching boxes when the Cats tangle with the Roos this weekend. 32 with three other teams, and likely a fourth will join that logjam in the middle of the top eight.
While its percentage has helped Geelong keep sway so far, if the losses keep piling up it will make little difference. Its times like these that the lack of intensity against lower ranked but hungrier teams - Collingwood and Carlton - come home to roost. This is the cost. Wins in those games would have killed this debate. If the game was played purely on statistics Geelong would eke out a narrow win. The Cats are slightly up on the Roos in disposals, clearances, marks and inside-50s with the rest of the numbers more or less even. Geelong’s midfield stats are up on the Roos as well, led by Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood backed by Mitch Duncan and Cam Guthrie, with cameos from Jimmy Bartel’s beard. Despite benefiting from two extra wins, North Melbourne’s percentage is still eight points behind Geelong, and that’s with the Cats’ wayward goal kicking. Tom Hawkins will be missed but as sometimes occurs in these situations, someone else bobs up unexpectedly as a result of the structural change. But fix the goal percentage and the Tomcat’s absence might not be as fiercely felt.

Leopold is a step closer to hosting its own soccer club following the appointment of an interim committee last Friday night. A group of enthusiasts working to establish the club has proposed the name FC Leopold as well as a logo and team colours. Newly appointed president Mitch Vials and secretary Jared Larkins have led the group in meetings with FFV Geelong officials and City Hall’s sports and recreation department. The fledgling club proposes to base itself at Leopold’s Estuary Estate sports field, which has a fully enclosed and irrigated football pitch, portable dressing rooms and other amenities as well
as an adjoining AFL oval. Other names on the committee are treasurer Luke Foster, director of football Vince Aloi, junior co-ordinator Ben Shears and general members Charlie Fitzpatrick, Sarah Marusic and Tony Aloi. “FC Leopold is currently in the planning stages and is hoping to field a senior men’s, a senior women’s and multiple junior teams in the Geelong region football competitions for the 2017 season,” Vials said. “We’re looking for enthusiastic members of the local community who would like to assist this sporting club in becoming a reality, whether as a committee member, volunteers,
coaches or players.” Creating a “strong local club culture from the outset” was part of the club’s mission statement, Vials said. “We as a group are really keen to build a strong club culture and provide a place where players can develop and play for years to come. “I’m really excited to be working on this project with my fellow committee members and look forward to giving members of the local community a place to play football.” Vials said anyone interested in joining should visit facebook.com/FCLeopold or email footballclubleopold@gmail.com
