■ They have escaped from South Africa but can't hide from crime...

Family on the run By GEORGIA WESTGARTH The Adendorff family of three are victims of Melbourne’s outlaw youth gang surge and they have been left with a trashed car, big bill and disrupted future - things they fled South Africa hoping to avoid. Johan Adendorff was stabbed in the neck while driving in South Africa. The father of two girls from Endeavour Hills was then stopped at a stop sign in a small country town with his window down when the attempted hijacking occurred. “I was stabbed with a screwdriver in 2004,” Johan said. “The guy tried to hijack my car ... that and to give my daughter’s a better future was why we left South Africa.” Crime was what pushed the Adendorff family out of their home town and crime is what now plagues their life in Casey. The Adendorff family has lived in Endeavour Hills for 11 years without any trouble. But in the early hours of Thursday 2 June, Johan’s daughter, 23-year-old Nicole, had her car smashed and vandalised, with ‘Apex’ carved on the bonnet - for what appears to be no reason at all. “My driver’s side window and mirror was smashed but nothing was stolen,” Nicole said. Nicole’s 2007 Volkswagen Polo was parked on West Vista Place in Narre Warren North when bandits went wild on a 12-car vandalism spree. Nicole’s GPS was not stolen from inside the car despite the vandals having full access to it. “By the damage they must have used a hammer or some sort of instrument not a foot or body part,” Johan said. On his way to assess the damage to his daughter’s car Johan came across two other victims. “I was driving down James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills and noticed a red Toyota with ‘Apex’ also carved into the bonnet so I pulled over,” Johan said. “A guy in a Mitsubishi also stopped and told me someone flung a wheelie bin at his car that same night and damaged his radiator and grill.” Johan said the owner of the red Toyota reported seeing four people trashing her car. “She said she saw one jumping on her car - the Toyota was stomped on.” Nicole, now unable to drive her car to work until it gets fixed, is trying to figure out the best way to move forward - the car sitting in their garage. Nicole has contacted the State Government’s

Nicole and Johan will keep the VW locked away in their garage until they have decided how they will go about getting the car repaired. Victims of Crime to see what can be done, but is reluctant to pay $1000 in excess if she is to make an insurance claim. On the day of the spree, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Ivan Bobetic told a media briefing that cars across the Hallam, Narre Warren and Narre Warren North areas were affected. “It’s unknown if members of the notorious carstealing gang (Apex) were actually involved,” Det Bobetic said.

“It’s certainly an inquiry that we’ll be making however it would appear that this sort of offending isn’t of the same magnitude or modus operandi, if you like, that we are uncovering in his particular area,” he said. While the investigation is ongoing Johan is still looking for answers. “There’s no respect for other people’s property it’s all extra money on top for us for someone to have fun ... or whatever they want to call

it,” he said. The spree comes after more than nine months of home invasions targeting Casey residents - but is nothing new to Johan. “The crime in South Africa was really bad, the home invasions that are occurring now in Melbourne have been happening over there for many years - if someone is home they have access to everything,” he said.

Hoons get smoked out By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Hoons caught on video performing smoking donuts and burnouts in tandem - and in one instance hitting a spectator - at South East Skids meets in an industrial estate have had their cars forfeited to the state. More than 20 offenders - arrested as part of Taskforce Regarder police investigations - were called at a packed Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 8 June. All had allegedly performed circle burnouts in front of up to 100 spectators during various illegal meets at Licola Crescent, Dandenong South, from December to February. All but one of the hoons who pleaded guilty had their cars forfeited by magistrate Barry Schulz. All lost their licences and many were ordered to perform unpaid work as part of community

orders. Each had been identified using police CCTV footage zoning on number plates and drivers as they lined up in two long queues to join the skids meets. One of the accused was Mitchell Gifford of Cranbourne who, after taking part in skids, led police in a 135km/h pursuit in his Falcon later that morning. Magistrate Mr Schulz said: “It’s a matter of your (young) age that has particularly saved you from a period of imprisonment.” On 13 January Brodie Treloar’s car followed another vehicle into the turnaround bowl. Footage played to the court showed that the pair of vehicles in tandem, circle burnouts while a passenger sat out of the window of Treloar’s car. At the same time several people walked in the middle to film the performance - akin to “running with the bulls”, Mr Schulz said. Most of the offenders were aged up to their

early 20s with limited or no prior offences. An older exception was Trent Alexander Thompson who had several relevant priors and received a sentence indication of imprisonment and the possible forfeiture of his $100,000 car. A sobbing Thompson blurted “no” when it was mentioned that he could lose his car. Thompson was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 June along with alleged South East Skids organiser Marcus Cory Reddecliffe. Another repeat offender was Clinton Wawrzik who had his Falcon with the plates LUXXRY impounded for 30 days after speeding at 153km/h on Monash Freeway in November. Days after his LUXXRY Falcon was returned, Wawrzik was captured doing circle burnouts at Licola Crescent. He was on a community corrections order at the time of these offences.

‘That ute was my life’ laments crushed skid driver By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Victim’s hand almost cut off A stabbing victim’s hand was almost cut off by an intruder during a knife attack in his Doveton home. Detectives are continuing their hunt for the attacker after the 22 March raid. Armed Crime Squad detectives said the 51-year-old man victim suffered several stab wounds that almost severed his hand during the aggravated burglary in Chestnut Road about 2.45am. Police were told a man had forced his way into the home, assaulted the victim and fled on foot. The intruder is described as Caucasian, 175180 centimetres tall, of medium-to-solid build with dark hair.

Sounds like trouble Two Dandenong thieves grabbed a man and stole his backpack without saying a word. The 19-year-old victim was walking along Walker Street, near Clow Street, about 12.30am on Wednesday 1 June. Two men of African appearance approached him, Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said. “No words or demands were made,” she said. “But one of the offenders held the victim while the other removed his backpack.” The thieves ran from the scene, traveling east on Walker Street, with the backpack which contained a wallet, iPhone and other items.

Nose broken during robbery A Garfield man suffered a broken nose during a robbery along Thomas Street, Dandenong. The 20-year-old was walking, about 7pm Thursday 28 April, when three men, described as aged 16 to 18 years and of Maori appearance, approached and punched him in the face. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said the victim also suffered swelling to his right eye and cuts and bruises. His attackers stole his black and red bumbag, she said. A person in a car stopped to check on the victim after the assault and drove him to Dandenong Hospital. Det Sen Const Jarvis urged the Good Samaritan and any witnesses to the assault to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A male shoots video on his phone, metres in front of McCullagh's ute. 155393 file percentage”. Backed by a psychological report, Mr Ward said the prospect of McCullagh losing his licence was a “catastrophic” consequence. To forfeit the ute would cause undue hardship, Mr Ward said. McCullagh would “probably” lose his job and have to sell the car due to being unable to pay off a $26,000 car loan. Magistrate Barry Schulz said the footage was the “worst example of driving” he’d seen from the 20-plus Taskforce Regarder offences.

If not for the psychological report, McCullagh would have been imprisoned, Mr Schulz said. The accused was convicted and placed on a two-year community corrections order, with supervision and up to 250 hours of unpaid work. McCullagh was disqualified from driving for 12 months and his ute was forfeited to the Crown. After the hearing, McCullagh posted on Facebook that he might as well have been “locked up”. “The only person to blame is myself but a bit harsh if you’re asking me.” 1202687-PB45-15

“I lost something that means a lot to me in life and it really f***in hurt!” So lamented a hoon on his Facebook page when Dandenong Magistrates’ Court confiscated his ute after he was caught on video skidding into a bystander and sending her flying. He later wrote that he may as well have been sent to jail. There was an audible gasp from the court’s public gallery when the video showed the woman being hit. Mitchell Paul McCullagh’s Falcon XR6 ute furiously burned circles and tyre rubber for about a minute in front of a 100-strong crowd, the video footage showed. Then in a split second, from out of the thick smoke, the rear tray swung around into front of the frame and hit a young female at the South East Skids illegal meet in Dandenong South in September. The footage shows the victim’s legs being taken out and her being thrown several metres from the impact at the Licola Crescent ‘turnaround bowl’. The victim was later taken to Monash Medical Centre for treatment. McCullagh’s ute still wore side-panel damage from the incident when it was seized by police on 3 February, the court was told on 8 June. After the footage first aired on Channel 7 on 15 February, McCullagh called South East Skids organiser Marcus Cory Reddecliffe. Police prosecutor Acting Sergeant Cameron Smithett told the court that McCullagh said: “I’ve been stressing about that video getting out there and now it’s out. “So I’m f***ed. I’ll end up going to jail for sure now.” McCullagh had continued to attend skid meets after knocking down the victim, the court was told. He was captured on CCTV doing circle burnouts close to a crowd at a Licola Crescent meet on 30 December. McCullagh, 21, pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless conduct endangering serious injury. Defence barrister Peter Ward said McCullagh’s intellectual development was in the “lowest pro-

O’Brien Real Estate has finally re-opened the doors to a prominent Dandenong building. It’s set up shop in the former Bendigo Bank building at Lonsdale and Clow streets. Greater Dandenong Council bought 282 Lonsdale Street in 2007 “for strategic purposes”. Bendigo Bank vacated in October 2014 to move into the Dandenong Civic Centre, and the council approved the O’Brien lease last October. “Those old enough would know the verandah housed the giant Santa every Christmas,” O’Brien general manager Jason Mudford said. “O’Brien hopes to turn some Irish luck on the site when we officially open the doors on Monday 13 June, and coincidentally this is O’Brien’s 13th office.” O'Brien Real Estate has other offices in Endeavour Hills, Cranbourne, Berwick, Narre Warren, Pakenham, Mornington, Frankston and Drouin.

CASEY.VIC.GOV.AU

Mayor sets the record straight The City of Casey Mayor has expressed shock at the methods and decision by the Essential Services Commissions (ESC) to reject Council’s application for a rate cap variation, adversely impacting the delivery of essential community infrastructure into Casey (Victoria’s largest and one of the fastest growing cities). 'PMMPXJOH UIF JNQMFNFOUBUJPO PG BO FGmDJFODZ SFWJFX three years ago, which is delivering almost $1 million worth of savings to the ratepayer every year, Council applied to the ESC for a very modest rate variation of less than 1% (just .97%) above the 2.5% rate cap, or just $14 per household per year, to secure vital infrastructure for Casey’s growing community. The ESC denied Council’s application and suppporting documents, which provided extensive BOBMZTJT NPEFMMJOH FWJEFODF BOE KVTUJmDBUJPO GPS UIF need for a variation over 700 pages including supporting documents, yet approved it for another council whose submission was only two pages! This is a very poor and inconsistent approach to decision making and smacks of political interference - the outcome of which strips $1.6 million from Council’s 2016-17 capital works program, and will contribute to a $168 million funding shortfall over the next ten years if this approach is not corrected. The ESC had suggested that Council should instead borrow the money to fund critical infrastructure. That would be akin to a family taking out a personal loan to buy the groceries. The problem with borrowing money is that eventually, it must be paid back. Your Council represents very responsible municipal government, and WILL NOT BE BORROWING money that will become a burden on our children and grandchildren. This means unfortunately that the ESC decision will not only impact the delivery of new infrastructure, but will also increase waiting lists to access family services, and families in growing communities will face a lengthy car trip to access sporting facilities. Just $14 extra per house per year would save Council taking on millions of dollars of debt, which will then be a burden for future generations. Some residents have asked why is Council pursuing a rate variation whilst building Bunjil Place, which is a $125 million cultural and civic precinct for the enjoyment of all our residents. The answer is that Bunjil Place has been planned and budgeted for several years ago, and accordingly its construction will not impact on rates by even one cent. In addition Bunjil Place will provide much needed facilities such as a new state-of-the-art library, a function centre and 800-seat regional theatre for the use of our school communities and for entertainment of our residents, who will no longer need to travel to the city to catch an international play or performance. A handful of ill-informed serial protesters and armchair critics have even suggested that Council should stop the construction of this facility! Council has signed a construction contract for Bunjil Place, and reneging on this now will cost the

ratepayers millions of dollars in damages for nothing in return. The City of Casey is not in the business of ripping up legally binding contracts for the sake of a political stunt! This is short term petty politics that will have long term affects for the residents of the City of Casey. A future State Government will modify this policy and residents could be facing double digit rate increases to make up for the infrastructure shortfall UP DPOUJOVF UP CVJME B mSTU DMBTT DJUZ One only has to look at the experience of cities in NSW, where rate capping has damaged them beyond rescue, and where communities are suffering as a result of inadequate and very poorly maintained infrastructure. It was also disappointing that the ESC denied Council’s application on the basis Casey has received funding from the State Government’s Interface Growth Fund. The Interface Growth Fund was developed to assist growth area councils like Casey to address the infrastructure backlog typically developed over years of sustained growth in outer suburbs. It is not a secure ongoing funding source and should not be used as a substitute for the rate base. I also question the State Government’s decision to appoint the ESC to undertake the assessment process, given their lack of understanding of the MPDBM HPWFSONFOU mOBODJBM DPOUFYU The ESC does not seem to have the required understanding of Council budgets to be given the considerable responsibility of assessing these applications. The fact they said we had an underlying surplus of $33.9 million is nonsense. This is the same ESC that let South East Water bills increase by an average of 8.25% above CPI each year for the last eight years, for no additional service level, yet has decided that Casey ratepayers should be limited to CPI on their Council rates and lose the projects that would have been funded, for just an additional $14 per home per year. We should have been afforded a suitably experienced body to make an educated assessment of these applications, rather than the ESC that is drawing erroneous conclusions and making inconsistent decisions.

Response to Letters to the Editor I am also responding to Letters to the Editor on this subject, ‘To cap it all off’, ‘It’s worse than you think’ and ‘Blaming everyone else’, published in the Berwick and Cranbourne News on 2 June. Whilst each letter touches on different elements of Council’s budget process and operations, the writers

have all made ill-informed assumptions, which demonstrate a complete lack of awareness about the work that goes into preparing a city budget. Council undertakes a stringent process over many months to compile a budget that delivers for the community while minimising the impact on ratepayers. There are over 5,400 separate major item lines in the City of Casey budget, which are scrutinised by the Councillors and the Executive, item by item, line by line, during the budget process. It is easy to be an armchair expert, but this simplistic analysis of Council’s budget demonstrates a failure of the authors to understand the process and perhaps even the budget itself. If this same basic approach which the handful of weekly protesters have adopted was applied to running a Council as it is to being a critic, the city would collapse in a matter of weeks. It is no coincidence also that there is a Council election later this year, so the handful of armchair critics and serial protesters are DWWHPSWLQJ WR EXLOG XS D SURÀOH DW WKH H[SHQVH of the interest of the City of Casey and its residents, and through pretending to act with all care, but with absolutely no responsibility. As the largest and one of the fastest growing municipalities in Victoria, Casey has pressures responding to our rapid growth that most councils don’t have. However, through careful budgeting, Casey’s residents continue to have one of the lowest rates per household in outer metropolitan Melbourne whilst Council continues to deliver a record capital works investment into our city. 7KHVH DUH DOO )$&76 WKDW FDQ EH YHULÀHG E\ independent state bodies like the Municipal Association of Victoria. For the handful of protesters to continuously falsely criticise and peddle claims of mismanagement and wasteful spending shows a political motive that is devoid of any consideration of what it takes to budget for and deliver the essential services and infrastructure for a rapidly growing community. My colleagues and I remain fully committed to XPSLJOH IBSE JO CVJMEJOH B mSTU DMBTT DJUZ GPS UIF enjoyment of all our residents in this generation and beyond. Not only do we care, but unlike the handful of serial protesters, you have given us that responsibility through the ballot box. We have already achieved a great deal on your behalf, and we will continue to honour your trust until the very last second of this Council term. City of Casey Mayor, Cr Sam Aziz 1230741-CB24-16

Mihaly and Eva speak of their son Kristof Kollar at the funeral. 155048 Lazlo had recently scored his dream job working in hydraulics. In a recent post, he wrote: “I may not be there yet but I’m closer than I was yesterday.” For Amy, Lazlo was her “bridge” - as you drove under on a wet night, everything stops and there’s silence. When you pass back out in the rain, it seems to hit you harder, she said. Eva Kollar said her son Kristof had always been intrigued and excited by the world. A perfectionist and careful driver who followed his passion, landed a spot as an RMIT engineering student and was capable of anything, she said. He would mimic Borat, loved his coffee, the outdoors and was remembered for his three-coloured beard. Allie spoke of her boyfriend Kristof ’s fun, goofy side. How he’d dress up in ill-fitting clothes on holidays and not care what people

thought he looked like. No matter what mood she was in, Kristof would make her happy. With him by her side, she felt she’d be fine - whatever life threw at her. One of his former teachers spoke of how he and Kristof would chat like mates. How he would have looked forward to seeing the fine man Kristof was destined to become. As part of some of the pre-service preparations, Lazlo’s work-in-progress VK Commodore station wagon was dotingly prepared by loved ones. Mates have also organised a tribute non-hooning car meet in Caroline Springs on 25 June. At the service, senior pastor Matt Heins led a prayer that “you make the most of every time in your life”. “In such a short amount of time, (Kristof and Lazlo) have had an impact on so many lives.”

In between the flood of good words for Kristof Kollar and Lazlo Nagy, a spontaneous standing ovation erupted. “I’m going to suggest something probably not appropriate at a funeral,” Lazlo’s grandfather John said - before he requested the round of applause from the 600-capacity crowd. “They must have touched a lot of people. The reaction of everyone has been incredible.” Together the friends lay side by side in caskets at Faith Christian Church in Dandenong North on 4 June. The two teens had bonded over a passion for cars and mechanics. A 19-year-old budding scientist from Narre Warren who loved a debate, coffee and heavymetal, next to a calm 17-year-old ‘Mr Fix-it’ from Endeavour Hills who liked to break things down to basics. They shared a love for each other’s Hungarian families, great sense of humour and a gentlemanly, caring manner praised by all. The pair died together in a car crash in Kallista on 24 May. Their close Narre Warren North friend Aaron Goldsmith - who was also in the car - remains in The Alfred hospital. Lazlo’s grandfather John spoke of the final moments, just before the three left his home in Kristof ’s car on their last drive together. Lazlo was told he had work tomorrow but he was keen to leave - to help install a muffler on Kristof ’s car for his brother’s driving test the next day. “I’ll be back,” Lazlo told his grandfather. Kristof shook John’s hand and bid him goodbye. “And that was it,” John said. Kristof and Lazlo were eulogised by their respective mothers Eva and Louisa and girlfriends Allie and Amy. Lazlo had a can-do attitude, who loved to pull apart machines from an early age but was a “rock” who kept his family together, his mother said. He treated his brothers to milk bar treats, and built a train set for young relatives.

Looking Back 100 years ago 8 June 1916 Sad Fatality at Dandenong On Friday morning an accident befell Mr Charles Griffin, an old and respected resident of Dandenong, who has been engaged in the building trade for several years past, and, sad to relate, resulted in his death within an hour after this occurrence. On the date mentioned Mr Griffin, who had a contract for the erection of a weatherboard villa in Hutton Street, Dandenong, for Mr Armstrong of Police Road, whilst following his employment, fell a distance of between 13 and 14 feet, and, it was at once evident to those working with him that serious injuries had been sustained, therefore Dr Taylor was summoned. A fractured rib was a minor injury, but unfortunately there were internal injuries and shock, from which the patient succumbed in less than an hour's time from the mishap. Widespread regret was pressed on all sides, for the deceased, owing to his

straight forward and industrious methods of business in Dandenong and district, during a lifetime he had enjoyed many friendships. He was one who, having decided after due consideration that a certain line of action was correct, would pursue that course, and could be depended upon for a fair deal at all times. Mr Griffin was a married man, 49 years of age, and resided in Macpherson Street, Dandenong. To his widow and relatives we extend our deepest sympathy.

50 years ago 14 June 1966 International Award for Local Project The Jaycee road safety school. The story began in 1960 when Jaycee member, Stan Phillips suggested that the chamber build a road safety school to train the 114,000 local school children to recognise all road signs and to learn road safety and to apply this training to practical and lifesaving use.

Throughout the four and a half years taken to complete the school in Stud Road, the generosity of the Dandenong public, the council and the business and trade organisations was tremendous. This project has just received worldwide recognition as an outstanding effort in the field of local projects.

20 years ago 10 June 1996 Thomas Street forgotten by council Dandenong is a ‘feral city’ and Thomas Street is a ghost town which the Greater Dandenong council has ignored. That’s the view of Thomas Street businessman Mr Darryl Calderwood, of Australian Printing Placements, who said the only time he had seen someone from the council in Thomas Street was when a parking inspector booked his car. He claims the council has done “nothing” to boost Thomas Street, instead concentrat-

ing its efforts on the other side of Lonsdale Street.

5 years ago 13 June 2011 Volgren on board with $10m deal In another boost for Dandenong businesses, bus body builder Volgren has won a $10 million contract to supply 38 buses to Ventura Group. Volgren was the first bus manufacturing company in the world to successfully build an aluminium superstructure and led the introduction to Australia of low-floor accessible route buses and has operations in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. It is the only bus manufacturing in Victoria and Australia’s largest bus body building company. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Alongside the paddock there was a row of gum trees on the Power Street boundary. This clear paddock would, over many years of secondary growth, become quite bushy. The driveway continued round to the back of the house and the tennis court, which had a few large old red gums and some native bush and scrub. The only time we saw this paddock and sheds was when the gates were open for deliveries.

JACK LOOKS

BACK JACK JOHNSON

All deliveries of household goods such as bread, milk, ice and groceries were made via the house driveway. The Slades soft drink man called with his twohorse, iron-rimmed, wooden-wheeled wagon. He parked near the driveway in the bluestone block gutter which ran down McCrae Street alongside huge, rough grassed nature strips dotted with red gum re-growth. He wore a full leather apron with a shoulder pad on the right side for carrying the wooden crates, which usually contained a dozen bottles of

lemonade or a dozen mixed flavours. Sometimes his apron had a built-in cash pocket and a docket-book holder. Other times, when wearing a plain apron, he carried a separate cash bag on a strap over his shoulder. He would enter through the large iron gates to collect the crate of empty bottles and pick up the new order. The wagon was always fully loaded and the cases were made with openings between the wooden slats, to make it easy to see what variety of drink was in each crate. It was many years before plastic crates would be invented. We could not afford manufactured drinks at that time, but when we went to Grandma Doherty’s around in Langhorne Street she made us a drink called raspberry vinegar, which is what the men drank on the farms when they were harvesting the hay and building haystacks.

We kids reckoned it was good stuff. The first manufactured soft drink I ever remember in our house was before one Christmas. Nipper must have started his first job in the office of the Repatriation Department in the Victoria Barracks in St Kilda Road. Tarax had just come on the market and he had bought himself a half-dozen mixed flavours. There was the bright crimson red vintage which I think was raspberry and the bright yellow which was pineapple something, creamy soda which was brown like cola beer, and other exotic names and colours. We did not yet have an ice chest so the only cool place he could find to store them was in the lounge-dining room in the open brick fire place. He kept the door locked and only let his mates in. He was like a miser with bottles of gold.

Lobby to scrap foothills towers

Tribute to Rani By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Rani Featherston’s family led a public walk from Autumn Place, Doveton, to pay tribute to their murdered relative and other victims of violence on Saturday 4 June. Rani’s father, aunt and brothers laid flowers and photos at a tree where her body was found with multiple stab wounds in Lace Street, Doveton, about 7am on Wednesday 2 April 2014. The 34-year-old had been found slain just 500 metres from her home. Rani’s brother Aaron Featherston organised via Facebook for the walk to start from Autumn Place to the scene of the murder in Lace Street. He told gathered media that the walk remembered all victims of violence. “Unfortunately it happens every day,” he said. “She was my best friend. She was beautiful. She made me happy.” The walk was joined by Senate candidate and journalist Derryn Hinch - who has formed the

Derryn Hinch Justice Party. On Instagram, Mr Hinch - who is standing on a tougher sentencing platform and reform of bail, parole and domestic violence reform - commented: “Another female victim of violent crime.” The Featherston family, in a statement, later thanked the crowd for “showing us your support on this freezing, rainy day”. “We honestly can’t thank you all enough for coming down and walking by our sides today as we remembered Rani Featherston and walked in her honour.” CCTV footage showed Rani at a business premises in Robinson Street, Dandenong, on the day before she was murdered. Homicide detectives said that Rani was reportedly in company with a man around Oleander Street on the evening of her death. Investigators are yet to identify the man. Any information about Rani’s death to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic. com.au.

Casey Council will lobby NBN Co and politicians to scrap plans to install up to two 50-metre high mobile towers in the municipality’s foothills. At a 7 June council meeting, the council decided to write letters against the “proposed building” of two NBN lattice towers for Harkaway and Narre Warren North. Councillor Rafal Kaplon said it was a “pro-active” move from the council prior to NBN Co formally lodging a planning application. The aim was to highlight the greenwedge foothills’ protected status under the Casey planning scheme, and to urge NBN Co to explore alternatives such as underground cables and satellite technology. Cr Kaplon said NBN Co had chosen the mobile-tower option because it was the “most time and cost-effective way”. NBN Co has proposed a 50-metre tower at 380-386 Harkaway Road which will provide wireless broadband for 240 properties in Narre Warren East and northern Harkaway. NBN’s state spokesman Michael Moore said a tower had been chosen for Harkaway Road because fixed-wireless technology was the “most suitable” for the area. Mr Moore said NBN had not decided on whether to build a second “fixed wireless” tower for Harkaway Village. Cables and satellite were the other options, he said. Save the Casey Foothills Association spokeswoman Rosalie Counsell said the Harkaway Road tower’s prominent position would “desecrate” the scenic foothills for the sake of a “small number of households”. “While we don’t oppose the NBN, where it traverses high landscape value areas like the Casey Foothills, it should either go underground as was originally intended. “If this is not feasible, then it should be located on sites of low visual sensitivity, preferably where they can be ‘piggybacked’ onto an existing facility.”

Legacy stalwart Bill Rogers. 155216

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

A proud legacy By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS During Bill Rogers’ ‘retirement’ for the past 20 years, he has been still going full-time. As a volunteer welfare officer at Legacy he has been diligently working 30-40 hour weeks in Melbourne’s south-east - and at times further abroad - to look after veterans and their families. “If you live in the community you give back to the community,” the Berwick ex-police officer and Vietnam 7RAR veteran said. On 13 June Mr Rogers was named as a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) recipient for his voluntary deeds. They include being a past president of Rotary Club of Belgrave, and an RSL member of Berwick and Dandenong. Mr Rogers has also held board positions at Legacy in Melbourne and its national council. As a police officer, he protected witnesses and VIPs, and organised the Police World Games featuring 7000 athletes in 1995.

He said there’s a great need to look after the recent waves of veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. But often their families’ struggles are overlooked. He knows how veterans tend to keep things to themselves, and tries to help families to understand why the returned servicepeople have changed. “It’s the mental trauma they go through. A lot of them want to go back to where they came from - it’s what they know best and their mates are there.” As a veteran himself, Mr Rogers said posttraumatic stress has come and gone for him - and it’s been suffered by servicepeople for all time. He deals with it by keeping busy. Sometimes he sits and keeps company with war widows, some in their 90s, who have endured real hardship and loneliness. “I feel highly honoured. They accept a stranger into their home and tell you about their life.”

It’s a good thing that Doveton’s Mia Curtis has a calm head in a crisis. In a matter of fact way she recounts how she called triple zero to help her mum Samia Ghasi who was struck down with a heart attack as she lifted a bed at home last August. An overcome Ms Ghasi, whose heart was racing with palpitations, was battling to breathe and couldn’t talk. She just pointed to a phone dial pad and seven-year-old Mia - with no one else at home - did the rest. During the call to triple zero, Mia followed the instructions from operator Neville Stella. She relayed her address, moved pillows under her prone mother’s feet, routinely reported on her mother’s medical condition - and asked a few personal details about Neville, like his name - until paramedics arrived.

“He asked me if he could talk with her but there was no response,” Mia told Star News. Mia felt “a little bit” anxious at the time. “It’s happened a couple of times before but there were adults there then. “Kids are usually calmer in a crisis because they’re used to teachers and parents telling them what to do.” A proud Ms Ghasi underwent heart surgery and is now back at home. For her actions, Mia received a Triple-Zero Hero award from the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority - along with another 28 kids. Unsurprisingly, she dealt with the presentation with aplomb. After getting her face on TV, her St Paul Apostle South School schoolmates in Endeavour Hills are her “number one fans”. She won a certificate and a showbag of treats “and a day off from school”, she added.

Thumbs up for weeding effort By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS The escaped noxious weeds blighting Cardinia Creek once seemed “insurmountable” to Casey’s recently-crowned environment volunteer of the year Judy Smith. For 18 years, the Berwick green-thumb and other co-founders of Friends of Cardinia Creek have culled the exotic plants, removed shopping trolleys and rubbish, and revegetated the reserves. “I didn’t think we’d get this done in my lifetime,” Ms Smith said. Though, of course, the task - as with any weeding job - doesn’t have an end date. “The creek will never have a clean bill of health because the (weed) seeds are still there.” One of the worst is pittosporum - a tall East Gippsland-native with orange berries and cream flowers favoured by some gardeners as a hedge. “Nothing grows underneath them - only the other weeds,” Ms Smith said. Ms Smith’s 25-year commitment to the creek’s bushland reserves was recognised by Casey Council creating a seat - with a bronze plaque in her name - by the creek. Her announcement as volunteer-of-the-year was at a civic reception on World Environment Day on 3 June. “I’m not a front person. I do the work but I’ve got a good team to work with - six of the original Friends members are still there with me.” There’s still a need for new, young members, she adds. “People say you can come and do my garden but they never say I’ll come and give some help. “But they do say thank you for the work you do.” Fittingly the plaque seat will be planted near a platypus sign that marks the re-introduction of platypi in 2004 - an indicator of the creek’s continuing good health.

Judy Smith holds her plaque at her beloved Cardinia Creek. 155227 Recent surveys have been encouraging, with a platypus recently spotted as far away as Inglis Road, Beaconsfield. Each year, the friends group organises Clean Up Australia Day working-bees in Berwick and Beaconsfield, collecting more than 40 bags of rubbish. Ms Smith does her own clean-up round twice a week in the area.

She went to the first meeting of Wilson Botanic Park when the first seeds of transforming the abandoned quarry site were sown 25 years ago. A member of Australian Plant Society, she’s helped flourish a native-plant section in the beautified park She’s a person who likes to be near the earth, bushwalking in pristine marvels like Wilson’s

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Promontory or helping her son establish his garden in Warburton. As Casey-Cardinia fills with houses, the creek, the botanic park and Beaconsfield Fauna and Flora Reserve are increasingly “precious” places. Ms Smith feels at home by the creek. “I really enjoy Cardinia Creek and I want to make sure others can as well.”

12 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 13 June, 2016

Bowel cancer, also called colorectal cancer, is the second most common cancer in both men and women in Australia. Eighty per cent of cases have no known hereditary genetic associations. Bowel cancer is preceded by adenomas (polyps), which may become invasive cancer if undetected. Around 90 per cent of bowel cancers are curable if caught early. Yet currently fewer than 40 per cent are being detected in the early stages. June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and St John of God Berwick Hospital will support Red Apple Day on Wednesday 22 June to raise awareness and funds for Bowel Cancer Australia. Michael and Irene Ajani, owners of 9Mile Fresh, will donate red apples which will be sold for a gold coin donation and will also be included in the lunch menu offered to patients. St John of God Berwick Hospital has a team of gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons and oncologists that can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer. A diagnosis is made via colonoscopy and this procedure along with surgery and chemotherapy, if required, can all be accessed at St John of God Berwick Hospital. Cancer Council Australia recommends all Australians aged 50 and over screen for bowel cancer with a faecal occult blood test (FOBT) every two years. The government currently sends free FOBT tests to all 50, 55, 60 and 65-year-olds.

By 2020 the free screening will be every two years. If you are not in the eligible age brackets under the national screening program, you can still be tested. Contact your general practitioner (GP) to discuss your screening options. Your GP can request a faecal occult blood test which is eligible for a Medicare benefit. The risk of bowel cancer can be reduced by not smoking, a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and maintaining a healthy body weight. Risk factors include age, inherited genetic risk, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and smoking. Symptoms of colorectal cancer include change in bowel habit with diarrhoea, constipation or the feeling of incomplete emptying, thin bowel movements, blood in the motion or abdominal bloating or cramping. More general symptoms are tiredness, weight loss and unexplained anaemia. Mr Brian Hodgkins, Mr Phil Harris and Mr James Lim are colorectal surgeons who operate at St John of God Berwick Hospital. Mr Hodgkins consults at Berwick and for appointments call 9707 0685. Mr Harris (Casey Surgical Group) consults in Berwick and for appointments call 9707 3664. Mr James Lim also consults in Berwick and Dandenong and can be contacted on 9793 2687. Talk to a GP if there are any concerns for a referral to a specialist.

The long awaited Neighbourhood Park is coming soon to Timbertop Estate, Officer, with works commencing. The two hectare park, located in the heart of the estate, will be just one of many places to relax on the weekend at Timbertop, including the popular Timber Mill Café. Offering something for everyone, the park will include picturesque walking tracks, playground equipment for the kids, barbeque facilities and picnic area for Sunday lunches, and a large kickabout area for sport lovers. It has walking paths surrounded by native planting so visitors can go for a leisurely stroll and take in stunning views at various lookout points on the trail. Completion of the park is expected to be late 2016, just in time for summer. Ben and Sarah Manelski are building their home at Timbertop and are looking forward to enjoying the new park with their daughters. “The girls love to get outside - they love to play and run around so it’ll be great to have the park,” Sarah said. With places to explore and entertain in a safe, friendly community, Timbertop is more than just a land estate, it’s a way of life. Stay up to date with what else is changing at Timbertop Estate on the Facebook page - www.facebook.com/timbertopestate or visit timbertopestate.com.au.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Ready to have a crack By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS The key to TRJ Engineering thriving as a manufacturer is it “got off our bums and found work”, said its managing director David Murphy. The Hallam-based business, which employs 30 people and turns over $5 million a year, was named as a finalist at the recent 2016 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards. It has not shed a job in recent times despite the challenging times for manufacturing, including the wind-down of Australia’s automotive industry, Mr Murphy said. “We’ve actually employed 10 or so more people since 2008,” he said. Apart from effort, the manufacturer has also drummed up business because of its versatility. Much of its work comes from making Bdouble truck chassis, as well as vandal covers and safety handles for earth-moving equipment and stylish, custom street furniture locally and across the nation. As part of its “high end, high impact” work, TRJ made the striking, custom bins, bike racks and benches in the Revitalising Central Dandenong project and the seats in the recent revamp of Eaton Mall, Oakleigh. It has produced bins, illuminated signs, benches in Argyle Square, Carlton, a toilet block, barbecues for the City of Melbourne, as well as custom work for Perth and Randwick city councils. Mr Murphy’s motto is that the company will make anything, with the help of design software that produces 3D models. “Our skill sets are really high. There’s nothing we can’t have a crack at. “I’d go stir-crazy if we were just doing the same thing each day.” Mr Murphy’s father Terry started the company in a small factory in 1974. David joined the business 20 years ago, initially reluctant to work for the “old man”. He now

David Murphy with a chassis for a B-double truck. 117829 holds the reins of this family company with some pride. “Whether or not it goes for another generation, we’ll see,” Mr Murphy said. TRJ’s services include metal fabrication, all types of welding, laser and guillotine cutting, general engineering, powder coating, and brake pressing.

Picture: ROB CAREW Another Hallam business Dorma, which is part of an international manufacturing chain that makes automated door and gate operating systems, was also a finalist at the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards. For more on Dorma’s story, see Star News next week.

Plastics firm sustains effort For the second year running, Corex Plastics was among finalists for the Large Manufacturer of the Year at the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame awards. The Dandenong company didn’t take home an award from the Thursday 9 June gala dinner but managing director Simon Whiteley was still pleased to be recognised as an exemplary manufacturer. He said the nomination was recognition of the dedication and innovation by staff to be the best in polymer sheet production in Australia, and more specifically Melbourne’s south-east. “Sustainable business practices aren’t about awards but the dedication of the employees, and best practice to keep us at the top of our game as market leaders and ahead of the competition,” he said. “While the award is a public recognition, the build up to this point has been developing for many years and through the continued success of the business in a highly competitive market place. “It is a nod to this dedication by all staff that we have been nominated in consecutive years.” Corex was established in 1985 and is now the country’s largest manufacturer of hollow profile and solid polypropylene and HDPE sheet products, and the number one manufacturer of twin wall profile fluteboard sheet. The company recycles up to 20 tonnes of plastic each day, and its new products have about 50 per cent recycled content. Mr Whiteley said plastic was more recyclable than cardboard. “We want to divert stuff away from landfill and back into the plant,” he said.

The Casey Cardinia Foundation Ltd Community Grants Program 2016 Applications open 20 June 2016 Applications close 5.00pm 15 July 2016 The Casey Cardinia Foundation Ltd is a philanthropic community foundation, raising funds for local community groups throughout the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, with funds dispersed through an annual grants program. Established in 2003, the foundation aims to support the social, community and physical development of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire.

Mt Hira College is donating the non-perishable items to The Ansaar Project Food Bank, which each month provides relief packs across Melbourne to families in crisis, new settlers and ex-detainees. “What have you done today to make you feel proud?”

An Aussie actor is the new owner of a prominent Dandenong home that seemed set for demolition. John Sheerin paid just over $1.7 million for 164 Foster Street at auction on Saturday 28 May, McLennan Real Estate said, and plans to retain the 1890s home. The Edwardian-style house, across the road from Dandenong Plaza on the corner of McCrae Street, was promoted as ideal for residential development, a restaurant or medical centre. Dandenong and District Historical Society

president Chris Keys was unable to establish the date it was built or who owned it. A judge has bristled at a mere carless-driving charge against a driver who veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a postie’s motorcycle. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard the man clipped the bike’s rear end on Kingston Road on 26 November. Passers-by gave the writhing postie first aid but the accused stopped only briefly, then “s*** myself and just left” without giving his contact details or being drug or alcohol tested. He later told police he had been distracted by passengers “acting like children” in the car. The judge was “staggered” that the accused was facing a careless driving charge - “the lowest form of an offence of this type”. “It puts the entire judicial system into disrepute.” The accused also pleaded guilty to a charge of drug-driving in Hampton Park on 9 November. The case was adjourned for police prosecutors to consider ramping-up the charges.

Police take on Koori training

By CASEY NEILL

Dandenong police are receiving help to better respond to family violence in the Aboriginal community. Victoria Police launched the Koori Family Violence Police Protocols (KFVPP) at the Dandenong Civic Centre during Reconciliation Week on Friday 27 May. Officers will attend Koori Cultural Awareness Training that local Aboriginal community members have developed to increase cultural understanding around policing family violence. They’ll learn more about local support services available to Aboriginal victims and perpetrators and work more closely with Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers . Superintendent Paul Hollowood said police had been working hard to address family violence and had made inroads in encouraging victims to speak up. “These protocols will further improve our response to victims, children and perpetrators of family violence, ensuring all communities receive the best support possible from police,” he said. The KFVPP project is a partnership between Victoria Police, the Department of Justice and Regulation and the Victorian Aboriginal community. Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service CEO Antoinette Braybrook said the protocols would build on the strong working partnerships between police, local Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal family violence networks and services. “Family violence crosses all boundaries and affects all communities,” she said. “Part of the project is raising awareness of service providers and police about Aboriginal culture and building trust between community and police.” The protocols have already been launched in Mildura, Darebin, Bairnsdale, Ballarat and Shepparton.

“I was amazed at the adulation people had for him.” “It was the same as if the Pope was visiting. People just loved him.” Journal photographer Rob Carew still vividly remembers the day boxing legend Mohammed Ali met fans of all ages in Dandenong on 11 September 2000. He reminisced about the experience in the wake of Ali’s death on Saturday 4 June. “I knew he was very famous, but when I got there people were having a religious experience meeting him. It was full-on,” he said. Mr Carew said “a couple of hundred packed into a small space” at Dandenong’s Visy Cares Centre on Clow Street, now called Ystop. “He posed for photos with a lot of people. He was very generous with his time,” he said. “He didn’t really say much, but anyone who came near him he’d do the fist or the point.” Ali quite literally touched then-Visy Cares Centre manager Dave Glazebrook. “He touched his bald head and made fun of him,” Mr Carew said. “He tried to include everybody, no matter who they were. “He seemed really happy to be there. “I think he would have stayed there all day if he could.” Ali’s Dandenong visit coincided with his guest appearance at the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Sydney. He was a guest of the Pratt family, which ran the Visy Cares Centre. Dandenong High School band played Eye of the Tiger, the Journal reported at the time, and “Ali didn’t speak at the centre but his eye contact and hand gestures made the small crowd feel important”. Mr Glazebrook was moved by the visit, the Journal said, especially after Ali presented him with a signed pair of boxing gloves. “It is wonderful to receive the gloves to be raffled off for the centre, but for a short while I will keep them close to my heart,” he said.

SPORT Larnie striving to reach higher By JARROD POTTER Hoping to soar higher in her beloved gridiron, a rare state-level experience has only pushed Larnie Gubatanga to work harder. Flying into the Victorian Eagles squad, Gubatanga, 23, from Narre Warren North, was the sole Berwick Diamond to make the state squad and made her inclusion on the big stage count. Taking to the field in the inaugural state clash between Victoria and the ACT Monarchs and switching from running-back to slot receiver, Gubatanga took to the new position with gusto as she toiled in the less familiar role to push the Victorians to a 38-24 triumph. The Victorians had to come from behind after trailing the Monarchs 18-24 in the second quarter but the superior legs of the visitors came to the fore to set up the 16-point victory. “It was so interesting, as soon as we arrived on the field, had to be there 4.30. “There was a rugby game before us and the girls were sitting and watching and were so excited,” Gubatanga said. “We were wearing all our merchandise and it just felt all official and real - was really great.” Gubatanga believes the Victorian vigour showed the country that the southern state is more than capable of matching it with anyone in coming national championships - whether by foot or in the air. “How we played on the day we showed, not just NSW and ACT, but the rest of the leagues that we can not only run the ball, but pass it too and we’re a well-rounded team,” Gubatanga said. “The first half was pretty even, I think we were tied, but the second half we were just able to punch in the win. “Our defence held on, making sure their offence wasn’t moving anywhere, and our offence was moving the ball so well. Gubatanga wasn’t just playing in a different

enough for the shining Diamond though as she hopes an even better Gridiron Victoria women’s season in 2017 pushes her case for another Eagles inclusion. “It definitely makes me want to improve my own game,” Gubatanga said. “Training with the state players and coaches makes me realise what I need to work on and makes me want to do better this season and try

again next year.” Berwick Diamonds are on the lookout for new recruits ahead of next year’s season. side to usual, but also different positions as she lined up as a punt-returner on occasion, setting up a touchdown with a gutsy return through the Monarch’s defence. “I had a good return. I caught the ball which was the achievement as I don’t really catch the ball but I had a great return that set up a quick TD,” Gubatanga said. One run-around in the Victorian colours isn’t

Western force hits Vic Country

Jet Facey is ready to dive headlong into his first schoolboys national championships. 155085

Picture: JARROD POTTER

Jet dives into action and shows he's flippin' good By JARROD POTTER Flipping out isn’t usually a good idea for a sportsman ... unless you’re an up-and-coming diver like Jet Facey. The Haileybury student dived headfirst into the sport as a school elective and found his sporting passion in the flips, twists and somersaults. Facey, 14, from Berwick, will prepare for his state team debut later this year in Lightning Ridge in rural New South Wales for the School Sport Australia Diving Championships. From an elective, to a passion to the 2016 Team Vic Diving Team, it’s been an incredible rise 36 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 13 June, 2016

through the ranks for Facey. “I originally started at Haileybury because I was really into flipping back then,” Facey said. “We have a sport we have to do each term and you have to try out for the team to get into it - I made that. “I didn’t know much about it (diving) but I just did it and by the end of the term of doing diving at Haileybury I was invited to MSAC to try out for a team there. “I did that for one year and had the nationals’ trials for Under-15 springboards and I finished fourth there and that’s when they invited me to the team.”

The springboard specialist has a couple of months to hone his dives - especially his favoured forward two and a half - before the championships - running from 27 August to 3 September. Backing up performances at competitions - his fourth place finish at the All Schools Division Championships and a Ringwood diving meet where he finished second - Facey wants to push himself to the limit in pursuit of a maiden national medal. When he’s not in the pool perfecting his dives, Facey also loves to twist and turn through the midfield for the Haileybury football team.

UNDER 18 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND 1 A SHAKY start to its title defence greeted Vic Country across the Nullarbor last Sunday. Fighting hard for three stanzas, the final refrain emphatically belonged to Western Australia as the hosts booted nine of the last 10 goals to put Vic Country in its place 19.11 (125) to 10.4 (64). It was fairly even throughout the day at Perth, as neither side delivered a decisive blow in the first half, but eventually the Swans started their rapid ascent away from the Victorians. From the dying stages of the third - after Stingrays midfielder Myles Poholke jagged a goal to put the side within four points - it was all one-way traffic. Nothing Vic Country had in the tank matched the resurgent Western Australians who show no remnants of the side that was thoroughly beaten and battered throughout last year’s carnival. It was in stark contrast to the opening term where Vic Country held court and forced the Swans to fight it out. Josh Battle (four goals) jagged three quick goals in the first term - on a difficult day for the Doveton/Dandenong forward. He had support from Poholke, Sam Fowler and Geelong’s Brett Blair alongside him up front, while the streaming centremen Jarrod Berry, Tommy Jok and Will Brodie gave plenty of drive. But such was the Western force that Vic Country assistant coach Wayne Siekman believes the Swans have bounced back from its 2015 low in an extraordinary manner.

Noble Park surged with EFL season on the line By JARROD POTTER EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - ROUND 9 STANDING its ground against best of Balwyn’s might, Noble Park endured a monumental fightback to snare a sweet 12-point away win. Noble Park had built a comfortable lead through the first three terms - especially on the back of an extraordinary six-goal second quarter. The Bulls laid the foundations for success upon the mighty shoulders of Brett Dore and Kyle Martin (five goals). Martin starred through the centre and up forward in his usual manner while Dore took to any high-marking task he was given - forward or back. Tim Kelly and Ryan Morrison curtailed the Tigers from the other end while Vergim Faik gave it on a platter to the likes of Mitch Gent, Sam Monaghan and the indefatigable Craig Anderson. Defensive reinforcements - in the form of recent Box Hill alumnus Liam Tobin who made the switch back to EFL this week - added another layer of depth to the Bulls’ back half alongside Morrison, Ben Giobbi and Kelly. But despite the resolute efforts from the entire Bulls’ group ... nothing they could do would shake the Tigers loose. Balwyn threw everything they had at the visitors in the final stanza - taking their chances through the midfield, finding space with overlap before delivering it lace-out to Nathan Gordon and Jeff Gobbells (four goals each). Tim Harper (two goals) made amends for an earlier miss by slotting the Bulls’ first of the fourth, before the side started getting overrun. Balwyn had it on a string through the last 20 minutes as Noble Park was left to withstand the barrage. The frantic efforts in defence from Giobbi, Tobin, captain Sam Monaghan and Stewart Kemperman allowed the Bulls to escape time and time again before the Balwyn battering started to subside and show its weak-spots. But throughout it all the Bulls planted their feet and dug in. Kevin Kean and Martin combined to boot the match-sealer - crumbed from a tap and delivered with quick hands to the former AFL midfielder which made for one almighty statement when the siren blew. It gave Noble Park another win at the Balwyn fortress - the reigning premiers’ hoin what has proven to be a happy hunting ground for the Moodemere Street boys in recent seasons. Noble Park coach Mick Fogarty threw his hands up in pure joy after the hard-fought win as he knew how much this match meant in the context of the side’s 2016 chances. “We’re just ecstatic today with getting the result, we knew if we come to produce an effort that we’re capable of, the results will come and they came,” Fogarty said. “We always have belief in the strength of the group - I thought we almost had our best side in today (Saturday). “Ziggie Alwan was missing, Piva (Wright)

Vergim Faik clunks a big pack grab in Noble Park’s win over Balwyn. 155461 came back and played his first game and worked hard. “You could see he was underdone and eventually had to put him in when it was season on the line - game on the line sort of thing - to come down here and play the reigning premiers.” Fogarty couldn’t praise his battering ram Anderson highly enough, as he continued to light up the competition and give the side someone to follow into the trenches. “Ando was sensational,” Fogarty said. “That’s vintage Ando - we don’t get to see too much of it anymore simply because we shouldn’t have to rely on a 36-year-old player to be our best week-in, week-out, but today he turned the clock back didn’t he.”

Noble Park improves its record to 5-4 and hoists itself to fourth on the Division 1 ladder. Hosting Vermont on Saturday afternoon will be another top-tier showdown for Fogarty’s Bulls as it looks to dismantle the top-of-the-ladder visitors to the Bullring. Tobin back to the Bullring By JARROD POTTER LIAM Tobin bid farewell to the Victorian Football League (VFL) this week to return to where it all began - Noble Park. After over 100 senior and reserves matches with Box Hill Hawks - including the 2013 VFL premiership victory - Tobin, 24, called time on his VFL career as it was simply his time to move on. He said his farewells to the club he called home for five seasons, before packing up and slotting straight into the Bulls’ defence for its Eastern Football League (EFL) round 9 clash. “I had a clause in my contract at the VFL and if I wasn’t feeling happy or feeling I was getting the most out of my footy they’d let me go, so I made that decision on Tuesday night and told the boys,” Tobin said. “From now on I’m at Noble as it’s not good to go back and forth (between VFL and local footy), so I made the decision. “To consistently play for them (Noble Park) it’s been about seven years now, so it’s good to be back and good to see some of the boys I’ve played with in juniors still here and have played 200-plus games. “It’s fantastic and to get a win is even better.” That good start for Tobin came on Saturday as he played a crucial part in the Bulls’ 12-point triumph over the Tigers. Reuniting with junior team mates Tyson Mitchem, Vergim Faik and Kyle Martin - this time in the senior ranks - Tobin excelled down back as he took some of the harder tasks and flourished in his return to blue and gold. There was no easing into his role either; Tobin and the Bulls’ backmen were under siege throughout most of the second half, but they stuck it out to claim the side’s most important win yet in 2016. “Balwyn when they got their running game up they were quite dangerous, but credit to the boys,” Tobin said. “Stoppages were excellent and just fought it out - they kicked two or three but we were able to respond and it showed really good resilience and building as a team.” He thinks finals are definitely in the equation for the Bulls this season, but a lot will be determined in the next few weeks with some tough challenges ahead. Noble Park coach Mick Fogarty was thrilled to get Tobin through the doors - for good this time - and fondly remembered how talented the defender has been all along. “He’s a really good player - I remember about 2011 when he was at Box Hill, just embarked on a VFL career, and we had him for a week down at Blackburn and we played him at half-back and he was outstanding then too,” Fogarty said. “He’s just a really, really talented footballer as well as setting up the back line. “He’s a terrific acquisition.”

Dandenong Thunder stung with first NPL 2 East draw By JARROD POTTER NPL 2 VICTORIA - ROUND 16 THE streak is over. Dandenong Thunder’s spree to start 2016 has been capped at 15 after Whittlesea Ranges held the visiting Dandy boys to an intense 3-3 draw. From the heights of 2-0 up early on - following a pair of great goals via Veton Korcari (26’) and Kristian Sarkies (48’) - Dandenong was left to endure a nightmare second half. The first for the Ranges was mired in controversy as free kicks and a penalty kick was awarded against Faisal Sakhizada. to give the hosts their opener. Dandenong copped the brunt of the referee’s whistle throughout the afternoon, with five yellow cards going in the book when the dust settled. The hosts booted three goals in the blink of an eye to leave the visitors staring down the barrel of defeat for the first time in 2016. The Ranges charged to boot two more in rapid succession, but Thunder had an ace left up its sleeve. Enter Brandon Barnes (85’).The mercurial 38 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 13 June, 2016

Englishman divided the Ranges’ defence to boot the Thunder back to level pegging. Korcari almost stole the victory with a dying minutes’ header, but it fizzed over the crossbar, leaving the result deadlocked at the final whistle. “Was like a boxing match and at the end of the day I enjoyed it,” Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic said. “They had two breaks, played counterattacking football similar to us - broke, scored, scored again and it was mayhem for last 20 minutes as we tried to catch up. “The best teams in the world drop games though - no team ever wins 100 per cent. “To go away and play under those circumstances and to come away with a point there against a top team like that, we’re still happy.” Dandenong City fared similarly against Bendigo City, forced into accepting a 2-2 draw at home. Luke Burgess (13’) and Dario Matkovic (77’) booted City’s goals as the match heated up towards the end, with three yellow cards given out for the hosts in the last 20 minutes. Springvale White Eagles were the only Dan-

denong-based NPL side to sing the song after a 2-1 triumph over Ballarat Red Devils. John Pykett (74’) was the Springvale saviour, getting free at the back post late in the day to steal the points after Damir Stoilovic (56’) added his eighth goal of the season to his tally. Kingston City has closed the gap - with only two points separating them from the Thunder atop the NPL 2 Victoria East ladder - heading into round 17. Springvale White Eagles host Werribee City, Dandenong Thunder plays Ballarat Red Devils under lights on Saturday night while Dandenong City travels to battle North Geelong Warriors. In the state leagues South Springvale fell 1-4 to Frankston Pines, ending a mid-season purple patch for Aris. Noble Park United was put to the sword 1-3 by Doncaster Rovers. Noble Park SC defeated Harrisfield 3-0, Endeavour Hills Fire had a 3-3 draw with Skye United, while Sandown Lions and Dandenong Warriors both lost.

Liam Tobin has settled on his local football future - as he returned to Noble Park this week. 155461 Picture: JARROD POTTER 37 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 13 June, 2016

Athlete learns how to step up By JARROD POTTER Hoping her summer success leads into next athletics season, Springvale Little Athletics Centre track and field star Emmanuella Chaliker leaped into the record books. Chaliker, 12, from Cranbourne, only got into the sport on the suggestion of a teacher at St Joseph's... which turned into a fatefully brilliant idea. A hop, step and a jump later, Chaliker earned her inaugural state gold medal on her local track with a 10.48m leap at Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships in March. The harsh conditions - harsh rain and buffeting winds at the track - didn't faze the junior champion as she out-leapt the competition. When she heard the number called out by the marshals, she was left stunned and with no one surpassing her best attempt, Chaliker was speechless when she accepted her first state title. “I didn’t believe it at first, but I was happy,” Chaliker said. “State gold in triple jump, my first state gold, so it was really good.” It’s been a rapid rise in the sport for Chaliker, who hadn’t thought about competing athletically at all two years ago. But how quickly the tables turn and in her case, how success can just fall in your lap with enough hard work. “About two years - a teacher from my primary school - St Joseph’s - told me I had talent and I tried out for Springvale Little Athletics club,” Chaliker said. “I mainly like triple jump - ’cause it’s fun and easy - and some 200m events, hurdles and sprints.” Her coach Corey Pendry from Pendry’s Development Squad was thrilled to see Chaliker up the

ante at the state meet. From joining her squad to becoming one of its best and brightest members in a heartbeat, Pendry could not have been prouder of her star triple-jumper's massive personal best in the most technical field event. “It was a big shock to everyone when Emmanuella won state because the week before that at the Springvale meet she jumped 10.20m, then jumped another 28-centimetre PB at state to pull it out of the woodwork,” Pendry said. “In two weeks she cracked a 10, not once but three times, so she peaked at the right time. “At that stage I was watching other athletes and ran over to congratulate her ... so it was just an amazing day for her to actually win for the first time ever. “Most amazing experience she’s ever had as she finished second at regionals - I think she beat the state champion that won last year, so that was an amazing effort too.” Rounding out the success, Chaliker finished fifth in the 70m sprint final, sixth in the 100m dash to round out her stellar meet at Casey Fields Regional Athletics Track. She’s also the Killester College school athletics year seven champion and proudly showed off a sash for her achievements to cap off the 2015-16 summer athletics season. It will be hard to improve on her 2016 summer record, but Chaliker hopes to carry her strong form into 2017 as she eyes off further success in the track and field arena. Chaliker wanted to thank her coach Corey Pendry for helping her improve throughout the season and reach the top of the podium.

Rob Britton's kennel achieved a great feat taking five of 12 races last Thursday at Sandown Park. Although they were all winning chances, kennel representative Peter Riley was taken aback. “It came as a bit of a surprise - we knew Fanta Bale was a good chance but we thought the others would need a bit of luck. “For a metropolitan meeting I know the Daillys have had some big nights - I’ve been working with Rob for nine years and we’ve never had a city meeting like that,” Riley said. Rob Britton flew out of the country last Sunday, USA bound for a month long trip to look after his property in Abilene, Kansas. “His son Tim has been working on the property over there - when he comes home to renew his visa Rob heads over to look after it.” The Rob Britton team is one of the largest in the state but while the boss is gone it’s business as usual at his Lara kennel.

Fanta Bale surged to claim the Maiden final. “We have Mick Stringer from Tasmania over here at the moment to check the dogs before and after they race to make sure they’re fit and healthy.” Fanta Bale highlighted the kennel’s five winners when she produced a phenomenal effort to take out the Maiden final in 29.81. She burst onto the scene last Sunday winning

by seven lengths on debut in fast time. “It’s been a long time since a dog gave me goose bumps. Last Sunday we saw what she can do when given a clear run but the way she weaved through the field last night after taking a few bumps was incredible. “She’s done everything right from the moment she’s arrived.
