At the announcement, Member for the Eastern Metropolitan Region, Shaun Leane, said it would be much safer to cross the busy road. “It serves two purposes - one will be safety and the other it will slow things down a bit, he said. “Congratulations to everyone who has been advocating for it, it’s an enormous result.

AFTER six years of advocacy, Yarra Valley Nursery Disability Manager, Karen Dettmann, will soon witness a major safety boost along a notorious stretch of York Road, Mount Evelyn. Both staff at Yarra Valley Nursery and students at Mount Evelyn Christian School will soon have access to pedestrian-operated traffic lights, which represents a significant upgrade to the York Road crossing, located between Karen Court and Hawkins Road. The upgrade comes after Mon-

bulk MP James Merlino announced $490,000 for the project last Friday, 10 June. Ms Dettmann said the community had long held concerns that staff with disabilities from the nursery are at risk, when a school crossing supervisor isn’t present. Yarra Valley Nursery employs around 100 staff, many of whom have a disability. She said there had been some incidents previously on that stretch of road. “I represent the disabled people -

Candidate raises the bar By PETER DOUGLAS FEDERAL election time likely poses a win-win scenario for Monbulk sportslovers - it’s just a matter of by how much. Casey’s Labor candidate Hovig Melkonian has trumped his Liberal counterpart Tony Smith’s funding commitment for the planned upgrade of the Monbulk Recreation Reserve. Mr Melkonian has announced an increased $750,000 pledge, if elected, which would wipe out any fund-raising Monbulk-based clubs would need to undertake to reach the target. Mr Smith announced a $600,000 commitment just weeks ago, which effectively represented the final piece of the funds puzzle, with Yarra Ranges Council kicking in $1 million and the Victorian Government $600,000. However, Mr Melkonian said his rival’s proposal still left a $150,000 shortfall. “Labor’s $750,000 injection means the Yarra Ranges Council can begin the final planning and documentation, and ground can be broken within 12 months,” Mr Melkonian said. “The Monbulk community deserves this project to be fully funded and shovel ready within 12 months. “I played Under 16s footy for the Junction Eagles, and I remember torrential rain and hail while running around at Monbulk Recreation Reserve. “While I missed out on the upgraded facility, the next generation of Yarra Valley football, cricket and netball players will benefit.” Mr Melkonian said the Monbulk reserve was critically important to local sports clubs and the community. Monbulk Primary School, too, would be a direct beneficiary because they often use the reserve for their physical education classes.

Leader newspapers SEVEN throughout Melbourne will soon publish their final editions, with News Corp last week announcing cuts. This will include the closure of the ‘Free Press Leader’, which circulates throughout the Yarra Ranges. Other community newspapers will include Berwick, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, Melton and Wyndham. As many as eight journalists could be without jobs after the News Corp decision. The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) revealed the cuts through a bulletin to its members, which stated that increased competitive pressures and the size of the market had been cited as the drivers behind the decision. The final editions are flagged for the week beginning Monday 27 June. MEAA Victorian director Carolyn Dunbar hit out at News Corp. “MEAA members were this morning told that in three weeks, their papers will no longer exist,” she said. “It’s just not good enough. “The company is required to consult with their staff about major changes and the company should be drawing on the expertise of editorial staff on the ground before announcing any cuts to titles.” Ms Dunbar said it was a huge blow for community newspapers. The MEAA said it had sought a meeting with News Corp to discuss the proposed changes.

Their honour to ser ve By PETER DOUGLAS TWO Yarra Ranges residents boasted an extra reason to celebrate this year’s Queen’s Birthday weekend. Kalorama’s David Ashton-Smith and Marian Pawlik from Mount Evelyn were among the almost 600 Australians included in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday honour list, which pays tribute to their dedication to community. Mr Ashton-Smith was recognised

for his services to the performing arts and secondary education, while Mr Pawlik for his service to the Polish community of Victoria. Mr Ashton-Smith has accumulated a long list of achievements, including being the managing director of the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra and the founder of the Ashton-Smith Singers He has also been heavily involved in music education at numerous schools,

as well as being the adjudicator of eisteddfods since 1980. Mr Ashton-Smith said it was a shock to be among the Australians named. “I’m very humbled and delighted to receive the honour; a general feeling of gratitude to enjoy music for so long,” he said. “Music is still a big part of my life.” Mr Ashton-Smith said it was overwhelming to be recognised for some-

thing he enjoyed doing so much. “I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to develop musical talents of many young singers and performers, many of whom have gone on to have good careers,” he said. He paid tribute to his first singing teacher, Bettine McCaughn, who is due to turn 90 this year and is a successful music teacher. Mr Ashton-Smith listed his musical inspirations as included Frank Sinatra,

Tony Bennett and Shirley Bassey. His career highlights include working with Andrea Bocelli and Barry Humphries. Meanwhile, Mr Pawlik’s services include his work with the Polish Community Council of Victoria, wher he has filled numerous important roles. He is also the recipient of Victoria’s Multicultural Award for Excellence and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Republic of Poland.

Briefly Machinery store hit POLICE are calling for information after Monbulk’s Alpine Mowers was struck by burglars over the weekend. Between Friday night and Saturday morning, the mower store on Main Road Monbulk was struck by burglars using a white van. A rear roller door was forced open, and tools in a workshop on the property, some belonging to customers, were stolen. Chainsaws and brushcutters are among the items stolen, and the white van was later found burnt out in the Gembrook area. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

Knowing write from wrong THREE children have been cautioned over graffiti incidents in Monbulk earlier this month, after being arrested for criminal damage. Monbulk police Sergeant Mark Knight said that a 12-year-old Avonsleigh boy, a 12-year-old Emerald boy and a 14-year-old Monbulk boy had all been arrested on graffiti charges. The Avonsleigh boy was arrested for spraying

graffiti on a car in a car park in town; the Emerald and Monbulk boys were arrested for spraying graffiti at Monbulk’s ALDI store on 2 and 5 June respectively. All three were processed and cautioned.

Cigarettes swiped CIGARETTE thieves are being hunted by police after burglaries in Lilydale and Kilsyth over the weekend. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that about 2.30am on Saturday 11 June, unknown people smashed the front glass to a cigarette store in Main Street Lilydale. The thieves made off with cigarettes in a darkcoloured Mazda CX9. Later that morning, about 3am, thieves smashed through a glass door to a tobacco shop on Mount Dandenong Road in Kilsyth and cut through a security screen with an angle grinder. More cigarettes were taken from the shop. Det Sgt Smithwick said the two burglaries were “definitely” linked, and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

Promise of CCTV cameras By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS CASEY MP Tony Smith has promised funding for new CCTV cameras in five Yarra Ranges communities including Mount Evelyn and Monbulk. Mr Smith made the announcement in Monbulk on Thursday 9 June, where he met with members of the local community to discuss the election commitment. If a Coalition Government is reelected in July, Mr Smith has earmarked the Monbulk Business Network and Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce to receive $75,000 each for the new cameras. Lilydale police Crime Prevention Officer Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock said the new cameras would tie into the other CCTV networks in the Yarra Ranges. “The camera locations would all work as a network and link to each other to create a big picture of the ins and outs of the Yarra Ranges,” she said. Mr Smith said he has been working closely with the communities of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to identify locations in need of the cameras. “I have had many conversations with the local residents and businesses in these communities about need for CCTV security cameras to combat increased crime in their communities,” he said. The announcement follows a promise from the last federal election that has seen CCTV cameras installed in Lilydale, Healesville and Yarra Junction. “Whether it’s theft, graffiti, assault or other serious incidents, the delivery of these CCTV security camera networks will ensure the local police can respond quickly and have the evidence

John Coleman of the Monbulk Business Network welcomed the announcement and said CCTV cameras would ensure the safety of residents and businesses in Monbulk. “It is about keeping our community strong and safe and ensuring business

confidence,” he said. “We are always interested in attracting new businesses to our town and that means keeping our town really safe.” Mr Smith also announced funding for CCTV cameras in Yarra Glen and Woori Yallock as part of his election commitment. The funding would be allocated

as part of the Coalition Government’s Safer Communities Fund which builds on the foundations of the Safer Streets Programme and the Schools Security Programme. Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said in a written statement that the Coalition Government is planning to continue to address crime prevention

Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS in local communities. “The Coalition has now committed more than $100 million purely to assist local communities in delivering strategies to address crime and anti-social behaviour,” he said. “We will continue to put funds towards projects that make our streets, communities and our nation safer.”

HAVE you ever felt your knee ache on a colder than usual evening, or an old ankle injury stir up when a storm rolls in? Remember your granny complaining about her rheumatoid playing up in her hands in winter? Turns out, she wasn’t lying and you aren’t imagining things. Humans really can sense some changes in temperature and atmospheric pressure in our joints, especially in an injured or arthritic joint. And there is also evidence that migraine headaches are more frequent on rainy and overcast days. However, it is likely not as simple as the cold weather producing pain. It was thought in recent years that barometric pressure drops, as

in when a cold front rolls in, causes changes in fluid levels in joints, particularly in inflamed or arthritic joints. But if this were the case, we would feel joint pain every time we drive up Mount Dandenong. More likely, it is that nerve endings which have previously carried pain signals - i.e. from an old injury or a joint that flares up occasionally

- ‘misbehave’ when the body’s temperature starts to drop slightly. The theory is that the blood vessels around these peripheral nerves constrict in order to preserve blood flow to vital organs, just in case the body temperature keeps dropping. The constriction of these blood vessels around the nerves amplifies any signal in those nerves, including pain memories that are somehow either stored within the nerves themselves or, more likely, at the neuroreceptors within the spinal cord or brain where the nerves interact. Pretty weird stuff. And, obviously hard to quantify. Hence, why it is still a theory. And also, colder weather usually means less activity and less daylight hours for activity.

Regardless of the cause, luckily for us there are known treatments to counteract the cold. And guess what - they mostly involve getting or staying active! If you ‘feel’ the cold, then your body is telling you to start moving and get active. If your muscles and joints are too tight and sore to exercise outside, then exercise indoors and try non-weightbearing exercise like pool exercise, exercise bikes or gym classes. And, yes, those stretchy compression supports really do help ‘achy’ joints and muscles, as does direct heat therapy from heat packs and hot water bottles. Rotar y club help for Fiji

Cartoon

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A FORMER Sassafras resident has teamed up with Rotary Boronia to help a remote Fijian school get back on its feet. Andra Lazarescu and her partner relocated to Fiji shortly before Cyclone Winston devastated the small island country. Shortly after the cyclone hit, Ms Lazarescu became involved with Vunikavikaloa Arya School (called ‘Vunika’ for short). The school catered to 233 children from years one to eight, and employed eight teachers. When she arrived at the devastated school, attendance was only at 80 per cent and was bring operated out of a UNICEF tent. “Ironically, while tears were streaming down my face on seeing this deplorable situation, it was the teachers present who were shirking with embarrassment as if it was their fault?” Ms Lazarescu said. Ms Lazarescu reached out to Peter Malden of Rotary Boronia to help the school rebuild. “Once Rotary became involved, everything moved very quickly. Together we raised enough funds to make the first two class rooms ‘dry’

and bring the kids out of the tents and back inside,” she said. Within 30 days of receving the first donation from Rotary, the team had re-built a classroom and the students could work in dry conditions again. “We are now focusing on completing the entire re-build of the roof, and breaking this down into actionable stages,” Mr Malden said. “We expect about four stages, with each being valued around $10,000.” The team are using local materials and skills where they can to spread the benefit of the project into the wider community. More information on the project can be found on a Facebook page set up by the group to keep donors up to date on the progress and explain the details of the works. The Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/ friendsofVunikaPS. Think it over

The saving of the trees RAQUEL Pospischil and Alisha McGaffin, Grade 5 students from St Thomas More Primary School, have been studying the effect of the loss of eucalypt trees on native species.

By PETER DOUGLAS YARRA Ranges Council and La Trobe MP Jason Wood are urging the Victorian Government to re-think its position on works to improve the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. State Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Luke Donnellan has rejected an approach for funds support to widen sections of the road, which aims to improve the safety of cyclists and motorists. In a letter to Mr Wood, which the Mail has viewed, Mr Donnellan said further investigations were required to ascertain feasibility. The letter cited a VicRoads’ preliminary investigation, which stated there would be “significant challenges and high costs associated with such a facility”. However, Mr Wood has continued to push the proposal, including it in a series of recent tourism-based election promises. The promise includes $10 million to widen sections of the road, which Mr Wood said is much needed and could be one of the largest funding commitments ever for road safety in this region. “Ever since Cadel Evans won the Tour de France (in 2011), the amount of cyclists riding up through here on a weekend is unbelievable,” he said. “But the locals use the road, too. They may be taking the kids to footy. It’s a recipe for disaster.

It's time to turn opinion says La Trobe MP Jason Wood, cyclist Colin Rourke, Mayor Jason Callinan and Director Social Economic Development at Yarra Ranges Shire, Ali Wastie. 155305 “I wrote to Yarra Ranges Council and Victorian Government, proposing we need to do something about it. “But the State Government has said it’s too difficult and that’s not the answer we are looking for.” The recent announcement culminated in a whirlwind visit from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull late last month who also pledged his support for the plan. Meanwhile, Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callinan said the work would be beneficial for tourists and the community. “Residents want other people to come here - (there are) more than 3 million visitors a year,” Cr Callinan said. “Many businesses rely on people visiting but when big

events are held the local residents get frustrated. “They are small roads (and have) been like that for many, many years - infrastructure is not keeping up with demand.” Cr Callinan said there had been numerous accidents on the road over the years and he didn’t want to see more. “As a paramedic, far too many times I’ve seen cyclists that have been hit by a car,” Cr Callinan said. “Some motorists, with the best intentions, don’t realise the danger when they drive only a few inches away from them.” The sentiment gained support from Colin Rourke from Mitcham who for many years has cycled almost daily, particularly along the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

HAVE you ever wondered what it’s like to be a bird? It would be amazing, wouldn’t it? But imagine you came home from flying around happily and realised someone had cut down your home, the eucalypt trees. Every day, at least 174,762 square metres of trees are chopped down in Victoria, an area the size of seven Melbourne Cricket Grounds. You might be thinking that chopping down one tree wouldn’t hurt, but can you imagine that if every person who lives in Australia thought the same thing, then that would be over 24 million people cutting down ‘just one tree’. By chopping down just one tree (or 24 million) that could affect a whole range of different species. You would be taking away food, homes and protection for the animals and that’s cruel. We have been studying the effects of cutting down eucalypt trees and were appalled by what we found. There are 20 species in Victoria alone that are currently endangered. But don’t panic - you can help to save 20 endangered species in Victoria just by follow-

It’s just too cool for cats overweight; Keep your pet indoors. Make sure they stay warm and dry. Sometimes pets will want to go out and lay in the cold because a cold surface can have a temporary numbing effect for sore joints; Bedding that is easy to get in and out of, so avoid suspended beds; Keep your pet active. It is important to keep them moving so they don’t seize up and gain weight from no exercise; Arthritis injections. They are available at the vet. Newer types have injectable glucosamine in them so the relief is more quickly achieved. If you think your pet may be suffering from arthritis, early intervention has more chance of keeping your pet comfortable. If you would like to have your pet assessed to see if arthritis is evident come in and see one of our experienced veterinarians at Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Centre. If your pet does have arthritis, we are offering one free arthritis injection in an initial course if required until the end of winter. For more information, contact (03) 9751 2999 or visit www.drvet.com.au. Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Centre is located at 1449 Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Olinda.

WITH the onset of the colder weather, dogs and cats with arthritis may start to feel the effects of wear and tear on their joints. Many pet owners think that the signs of arthritis are just normal agerelated behaviours. Pets over the age of seven years are more likely to have evidence of arthritis. The signs of arthritis in dogs can be some of the following: Slow to rise after resting but then are OK to run around once warmed up; Personality changes such as being more lethargic and less interactive; Baulking at going up or coming down stairs; Stopping during walks and refusing to go on or walking very slowly. Cats are usually more likely to hide the arthritis. They will sometimes: Use furniture as steps when jumping up and down; Become more fussy with food; Become less interested in interacting with people. There are many useful treatments available nowadays. Some useful tips to help your pet with arthritis include: Weight loss. By far the single most important thing to help with pain is for your pet to lose weight if it is

LANDMARK PROPERTY STEEPED in history and originally part of the Emerald Country Club estate, this local landmark dates back to the early 1920s. Back then it was developed around the idea of a holiday resort and it is easy to see why. Nestled among an impressive range of mature exotic trees and gardens originally developed by ‘Carl Nobelius’ the serenity and seclusion here is breathtaking. Privacy and peace are assured as you cross over a small creek to arrive at this beautiful setting of over 2.5 acres. The canopy of oak trees, maples and silver beech trees is softened by open areas of lawn, fruit trees and natural bush to create the perfect setting for this idyllic homestead.

The residence makes effective use of rough stone on the base, columns and steps. The rustic theme is further utilised in the gable ends with rough sawn weatherboards (Australian Heritage Database) and stunning stone staircases. High ceilings, classic leadlight features, reclaimed messmate timber flooring, art deco ceiling roses plus ducted heating and a crackling wood fire create a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout. There are many outdoor entertaining options whether it is on the covered deck which opens from the kitchen family room, the balcony at the front which overlooks the most beautiful garden setting or in the

garden beside the creek where time really does stand still. A recent addition and renovation complements the character of yesteryear but enables the lucky purchaser to enjoy today’s modern luxuries. Built to an exacting standard you will be comforted to know that all the hard work has been done. There is also a large double garage with remote control, plus a workshop, additional shedding and storage, and the garden is serviced by a reticulated watering system. Perfectly presented and ready to be enjoyed, this property is one that says welcome from the moment you meander down the quiet country lane.

ly worldwide, Giles has returned to Australia as Associate Professor at the ANU School of Music and now teaches at the University of Sydney. For more details and tickets, visit ach. yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Snow waiting for adventurous Those seeking some winter action will be pleased to hear Lake Mountain and Mt Baw Baw are excited to be opening for the first time this year on Saturday, 11 June. With a little snow falling on the mountains, and more forecast, many will soon head up the mountains. Lake Mountain will celebrate with the official opening of the brand new ‘Bunton Riglet Park’. The park is designed to introduce youngsters (aged 3 to 6) to snowboarding in a safe and controlled environment. The park uses natural features designed to aid in the development of balance and board movement. Pictured is Lucas, 4, from Boronia, getting in his first toboggan ride for 2016.

Alice’s excellent adventure Alice Through The Looking Glass (PG) Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Sacha Baron Cohen and Johnny Depp ALICE in Wonderland goes sci-fi in a far superior sequel to the 2010 original. The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) has become crazier than usual, and is convinced that his family is still alive. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) travels through time in an attempt to rescue them, but in doing so places all of time in jeopardy. Taking over from Tim Burton, director James Bobin helms a fastpaced, exciting and visually stunning adventure, but the true star is Linda Woolverton and her intelligent, engaging screenplay. In a powerful performance from Wasikowska, Alice is an empowered, pro-active heroine who is still

allowed to be impulsive and uncertain. The plot has a healthy dose of moral complexity. Though she has noble intentions, Alice is recklessly endangering the universe by stealing the Chronosphere, and while the god-like Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) is zealous in his efforts to reclaim it, he simply wants to fix the damage. Though the logistics of how time operates in Wonderland are somewhat cloudy, the film makes tense, pretty brilliant use of the predestination or 'bootstrap’ paradox, with Alice causing certain events she had travelled back to avert. Alice Through The Looking Glass is one of 2016’s biggest positive surprises. But then, I could be totally biased. As a time travel fan, I ate this film up. - Seth Lukas Hynes

THE Montrose Town Centre is set to host one of the world’s leading harp soloists, Alice Giles. In what will be the final show at the venue before extension works begin on the site, Giles will perform on Sunday, 19 June, as part of the Classical Tracks program. After presenting her first solo recital at age 13, and making her New York solo debut in 1983, Giles is internationally recognised and has performed with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. Her list of musical achievements is just as stunning as the sounds that emanate from her harp. Giles told the ‘Mail’ she feels lucky to be able to perform solo at Montrose, which will be her first show in the region. “Playing solo is my favourite thing to do, it gives me a great sense of freedom in interpreting the music,” she said. “The harp is a very versatile instrument and has a lot of colours and expression. “It has much larger sounds than people imagine.” Giles said more people are appreciating the harp worldwide, including both classical and popular audiences. “Not many realise it’s a very physical instrument ... there are seven pedals ... you use your whole body,” she said. “It’s really a full-time instrument, I put in many hours before a performance to be at the top of my playing ... to have

The Minister for Water gives notice under section 27 (4) (a) of the Water Act 1989 of the proposal to abolish the Wandin Yallock Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA). The development of a statutory management plan for the Wandin Yallock WSPA is no longer considered necessary as there is a cap on licence extractions, extractions are metered and there is a monitoring regime in place. The Wandin Yallock WSPA is currently managed by a local management plan and this is considered more appropriate as it provides a more flexible, efficient and effective way to clarify watersharing arrangements. The proposed action will see the Wandin Yallock WSPA becoming a groundwater management area and would allow for permanent transfers to occur. This proposal does not alter the permissible consumptive volume. The Wandin Yallock WSPA is currently fully allocated so no new groundwater licences can be issued. A map of the Wandin Yallock WSPA (reference LEGL./03-133) and the details of the permissible consumptive volume can be inspected at www.srw.com.au or during business hours at Southern Rural Water, 88 Johnson Street, Maffra. Submissions about the proposed abolition of the Wandin Yallock WSPA are invited. Any submissions should be lodged by 13 July 2016 and addressed: Proposed abolition of the Wandin Yallock Water Supply Protection Area, Attention: Chris Hughes Acting General Manager Groundwater & Rivers Southern Rural Water PO Box 153, Maffra, Victoria 3860

Love of tennis enriches lives By KATH GANNAWAY IT’S grassroots tennis at it’s most relaxed, but for the Monbulk midweek ladies, two premierships is still something to celebrate. In two close doubles grand finals, Monbulk Section 7 won by two games, 38 to 36, against Wonga Park in the Wednesday competition and their Section 9 team won by an even closer margin, 39 to 38 against Hoddles Creek in the Thursday competition. In a change to the umpiring rules as part of the Ferntree Gully and District LWTA, the midweek games are now played at the home court of the team which finished highest on the ladder - and even the grand finals are self-umpired. It’s a model of self-regulation that Monbulk Section 9 Captain, Deb Williams, says fits very well with the friendly nature of midweek ladies tennis. Sitting down to a delicious lunch among the gum trees at the Hoddles Creek clubrooms, she said while it was good to win a premiership flag, it really was about enjoying the game, and the people. When they finished fourth and Hoddles Creek third, Deb said they thought there was no way they would play off against their favourite opposition ladies. But they both punched above their weight defeating the top two teams and found themselves hitting off in alternating bursts of icy wind and glaring bursts of sunshine on courts that, as far as anyone in the Hoddles team could remember, was a first grand final competition - certainly the first mid-week tennis. “We were really pleased when it worked out that way; we always have such nice tennis here,” Deb said. On the court, nice as it is, and it really is, everyone is putting in 100 per cent. “It’s still competitive, because it gives you a focus,” Deb explains. “But really it’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s not about gauging your self-worth from either winning or losing.” There’s a lot of talk from the four spectators on the side-lines about the benefits of tennis with one long-time player describing it as “something you can do from the cradle to the grave”. For the mid-weekers, it’s a game many take up after retiring from busy lives, or once their children are out of home. Deb started in her forties but said she has played with women in their eighties and possibly older. The numbers are dropping however, and with many women working longer, it’s a challenge to fill the spots. “I think now, a lot of families are just so time poor and midweek ladies is really a full day out, by the time you prepare food and play a full game, it’s time to go and get the kids from school, so a lot of mums just don’t have the luxury of a full day out for themselves,” she said. For those who do, however, it’s rewarding. “It’s women supporting women and it’s good for general wellbeing, mental health and the social interaction it provides,” Deb said.

Monbulk captain Deb Williams is a great advocate for women's tennis. 155482 “So many of the friendship groups I have are from my involvement in tennis. “Without the tennis club I would not have the rich life I have and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play.” The Monbulk premiership teams comprised Deb Williams, Rhonda Worrell, Jenny Sloan and Mavis Lees in Section 9 and in Section 7, Helen Pratt (captain), Val van Raay, Mavis Lees, Marita Hoogeboom, Julie Holdsworth and Karin Paxinos. Monbulk Tennis Club runs junior, senior and night tennis, as well as its midweek competition and welcome new players. For more information, contact president Dan Currie on 0433 204 774.

‘Let’s talk road trauma’

By PETER DOUGLAS

By PETER DOUGLAS IT’S the conversation all parents must have with teen children, according to Emerald Fire Brigade member Jody Yandle ... 'road trauma: how to avoid becoming part of a tragedy'. As the first anniversary approaches for the horrific car crash in Avonsleigh in which three teenagers lost their lives, Ms Yandle is encouraging parents and teens to attend the Teenage Road Information Program (TRIP) at Emerald Secondary College on Thursday 16 June. Ms Yandle was the first to attend the Avonsleigh crash, which took the lives of teenagers Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell, after their car hit a tree along Phillip Road on the afternoon of Tuesday 30 June last year. Ms Yandle said: “I don’t want anyone to experience something like that”. Which is

Grassroots tennis, a life-long endeavour.

Emerald and Gembrook footballers pay tribute to the Avonsleigh Angels last year. why she is encouraging attendance. TRIP will include video clips, guest speakers and information designed to encourage teens to think carefully about their choices, either as driver or passenger. “Families should have discussions with their kids around a 'plan B', if they’re out,” she said. “We want them to survive their youth, to think about what to do in certain situations ... to always have an alternate plan in case things don’t turn out as expected. “They need to identify that person ... the one who will come and pick them up at 4am if they don’t feel safe.”

The TRIP audience will hear from those who have lost someone close, as well as young man who worked hard to get back his life after a car accident. Emerald emergency service members will talk about their experiences, their role and how they manage the psychological stress that goes with their important work. TRIP is a free community event and will take place at the Emerald Secondary College’s Performing Arts Centre, at 7.30pm on Thursday 16 January. Counsellors and support people will be available. For more details, contact 0412 527 497.

YOUNG drivers are being encouraged to apply for this year’s Anthony and Travis Hall Driver Education Memorial Fund. Managed by fire services members in the Dandenong Ranges, the initiative offers the chance to participate in a Level 1 Defensive Driving Course. The one-day course is valued at $295. Four courses will be awarded to young members of the fire service and two members of the local community. The fund honours the memories of Anthony and Travis Hall, who were aged 15 and 13 respectively, when they were killed in a road accident in Cockatoo in 1995. Both teenagers were enthusiastic members of the Upwey Junior Fire Brigade. Fund convenor and former

Upwey Brigade Captain, Peter Marke, said the fund has been a huge success. “The fund received tremendous support from local fire brigades and residents, and even people from the suburbs,” he said. Great support also comes from Murcotts Driving Excellence. Applicants must be aged over 18 and reside in the Dandenong Ranges area. Applications should be forwarded to Melissa Hepworth Executive Officer, Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group, 30-32 Main Street, Upwey, 3158. Donations can also be forwarded to the same address, with cheques made out to Anthony and Travis Driver Memorial Fund. Applications close on Friday, 26 August.

Close-run contest to date FOUR seasons in one day seems to be common place in the valley during winter. As the results and scores reflect, they can have a major impact on football and netball, but the competition is proving to be a close-run race this season. Olinda sit one game clear on top after their win over Belgrave. There are three clubs nipping at their heels, just one game shy. In Division 2, Yarra Glen are two games clear on top, but have shown some flaws in their game after Saturday’s loss. Five clubs sit below them in equal second. The Under 18s are a closely run race between five clubs, with Wandin undefeated at this stage. Wandin and Olinda are proving to be the teams to beat in A Grade Netball, while Yarra Glen and Seville share top spot in Division 2 after a low-scoring draw, while Yea and Yarra Junction are sitting equal second. Upwey-Tecoma versus Olinda Ferny Creek will be the game to watch in Division 1 next week, while Division 2 sees the top-of-the-table clash of Gembrook Cockatoo versus Yarra Glen. Division 1 Seniors Upwey Tecoma 17.10(112) d Emerald 12.8(80) Emerald came up against Upwey that are sitting equal second on the ladder. Upwey got off to a good start, kicking 6 goals to 2 in the first. At the main break, the lead was 42 points and it was always going to be hard for Emerald to have any chance to cause an upset. Dan Waters with 7 goals was again a focal point for Upwey. Emerald outscored Upwey in the third, but the result was already decided. Upwey-Tecoma Best: T. Robinson 1, D. Waters 7, B. Oates 3, D. Van Hoorn 2, A. Kelly, N. Waterman. Emerald Best: M. Steer, P. White 1, C. Porter 5, L. McKenna, N. Jansen, J. Thomas. Healesville 15.9(99) d Woori Yallock 3.7(25) Healesville easily accounted for Woori Yallock on Saturday. Woori Yallock could not get their hands on the footy all day. Healesville held them to a solitary goal until half-time, while kicking 9 themselves. A 50-point deficit at half-time was the end for Woori Yallock. Another 6 goals to 2 in the second half gave Healesville a very comfortable win and has left Woori Yallock selectors scratching their heads. Healesville Best: P. MacFarlane 5, D. Plozza, B. Murphy, J. Savage 1, D. Anderson, A. Davies 1. Woori Yallock Best: D. Benson, S. Kennedy, J. Coombs, J. Matthews, T. Anderson, L. Boontjes. Warburton Millgrove 11.9(75) d Mount Evelyn 11.7(73) In what was one of the upsets on Saturday, Warburton showed what they can actually do if all the stars are aligned. Mount Evelyn have not been on good form at all this year, but punters would not have predicted this, especially at home. Warburton kicked 5 goals to 1 in the first and had a handy 22-point lead. Mount Evelyn played some inspired footy in the second and got back within 3 points at half-time. The final half saw several changes in the lead with The Mounters taking a 7-point lead into the last quarter. It was a see-sawing affair in the last, but Warburton were able to hold their heads up high at the final siren with a 2-point victory. Warburton Millgrove Best: T. Walker 1, P. Sharp, J. Iacono, J. Mullan, B. Winzer, K. Hall 3.

with a strong 12-point win. Yarra Junction Best: L. Cove, E. Wadsworth 1, S. Williams, D. Williams, N. Bark, F. D’Agostino. Kinglake Best: T. Thone-Kain, A. Whelan, T. Arnott, J. Butterworth, R. Mallison, B. Wilkinson. Yea - bye.

The netball action was hotly contested over the long weekend.

Mount Evelyn Best: K. Jones 7, B. Doyle, D. Kift, A. Gibbons, R. Hartfield, B. Cronkshaw. Olinda Ferny Creek 13.17(95) d Belgrave 6.5(41) Olinda started this game off with indirect kicking; 8 scoring shots to 2, but Olinda’s were all behinds and Belgrave took a slim 4-point lead into the second quarter. Olinda quickly turned that around with a 6-goal-to-1 second quarter and went into them main break with a healthy 27-point lead. Belgrave only managed another 3 goals for the game, while Olinda really got their game going and kicked another 7. Olinda sit on top of the ladder one game clear. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: C. Beattie, D. Noorda, N. Keegan 2, B. Shaw, J. Wallis 1, E. Greenall 1. Belgrave Best: M. Brown, T. Stubley, J. Brown, M. Johnson 1, C. Power 1, N. Somervaille. Wandin 14.14(104) d Monbulk 7.13(55) Wandin had control of this game from the outset. A 15-point lead at quarter time just set up the remainder of the day. Michael Fowkes was a spearhead up forward, kicking 7 goals. Monbulk outscored them in the third, but the difference was still 12 points. Monbulk failed to worry the scorers in the last failing to kick a goal while Wandin banged on another six. Wandin Best: M. Fowkes 7, R. Ross 1, M. Polkinghorne, J. Ladner, D. Ladner, B. Foley 3, M. O’Donohue. Monbulk Best: B. Hicken, S. Van Seters, S. Gough 2, J. Rak, D. McClelland, P. Barge 2.

Division 2 Seniors Alexandra 11.12(78) d Gembrook Cockatoo 9.10(64) This game was a cracker from the start. A slim 2-point lead to Alexandra at the first break set the scene for the rest of the day. Gembrook fought back in the second, holding a 1-point lead at the main break. It was a battle of the backlines in the third and scores were all tied up at three-quarter time. Punters would have tipped Gembrook to run over Alexandra in the last but a big 3 goal quarter to 1 saw Alexandra come away with a season defining 14-point win. There are now five clubs that sit equal second on the ladder. Alexandra Best players not provided. Gembrook Cockatoo Best: S. Martin, C. Vernal, M. Maddison, T. Whytcross, D. Leversha, L. Henzen. Powelltown 17.17(119) d Thornton Eildon 3.1(19) Thornton Eildon is having a season they would rather forget. They just can’t seem to find avenues to goal and their defence is under the pump every game. Powelltown took a big 27-point lead at quarter time. Thornton Eildon only managed to kick one goal up to the last quarter and at that stage Powelltown had 13 goals on the board. A massive 100-point victory to Powelltown sees them move to 3 wins for the season. Powelltown Best: J. Ford, M. McArthur, D. Edgeworth 2, N. Moody, D. Dyer, P. Miller 4. Thornton Eildon Best: T. Keating 1, S. Larkman, A. Reddan, B. Kapakoula-

kis, Z. King, M. Gower. Seville 13.12(90) d Yarra Glen 11.22(88) This was the first time these two have played since Yarra Glen’s huge grand final win in 2014. It was always going to be a tough game and it did not disappoint the supporters if you barracked for Seville. Yarra Glen took a slim lead of 5 points into the second, but should have been further in front as they had 10 scoring shots to 5. The lead increased to 12 points at the main break but 2.5 to 1.1 meant that Yarra Glen had left Seville in touch. The third quarter saw the lead extend to 16, but yet again Yarra Glen wasted numerous shots at goal that would have sealed Seville’s fate. Yarra Glen managed only one goal in the last while Seville pulled out all the stops and ran over Yarra Glen, kicking 4.3 and coming away with a hard fought 2-point win. Seville Best: B. Abbruzzese 2, M. Cecere 2, A. Mammoliti, B. Penwill, L. O’Keefe, J. Bourke-Finn. Yarra Glen Best: B. Dewacht, B. Ashton 2, D. Hurley 2, K. Hudson 2, M. Ashton, B. Clark. Yarra Junction 10.7(67) d Kinglake 7.13(55) A win to Kinglake would have had them sitting outright second on the ladder but that was not to be. Yarra Junction have kept themselves in touch with the top 5 with a win. Yarra junction held a slim 2-point lead at the first break but Kinglake should have been in front but for indirect kicking. Kinglake played a better brand of footy in the second, kicking 3.1 to 1.4 and took a 7-point lead into the main break. Yarra Junction turned it around again in the third, kicking 4.2 to 1.2 and took back the lead by 11 points. Yarra Junction had found their running game and held Kinglake to 1 goal while they added another 2 themselves coming away

Under 18s Emerald 9.11(65) d Upwey Tecoma 2.5(17) Emerald Best: J. Webb, R. Hall, B. Stuhldreier, C. Roma, T. Ladner 1, M. Thomas 1. Upwey Tecoma Best: B. Watson 1, I. Shineberg, T. Cairns, B. Raru, A. Aarden, T. Edyvane. Mount Evelyn 17.12(114) d Warburton Millgrove 3.5(23) Mount Evelyn Best: J. Beamish 2, M. Brierley 3, M. Gibbons 3, L. Healey, B. Forbes 1, L. Peterson. Warburton Millgrove Best: J. Nelson, B. MacDonald, M. Edwards, N. Oldfield, J. Jenkinson, P. Hay. Wandin 16.18(114) d MonbulkSeville 1.1(7) Wandin Best: H. Byrne 3, A. Gray, T. Merlino, D. Hirst, T. Preparation for aths

By DENNIS FULLER

By JAMIE STRUDLEY IT was another cold and sometimes wet morning of cross country, this week at Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream. EMERALD GOLF BECAUSE the previous Saturday was a wash-out at Emerald Golf Club, it was decided that last Saturday would be another chance for members to win the June VGL monthly medal. But the weather gods are a vengeful crew as it was raining when members arrived and continued to do so from then on. Numerous members gave it away when they got near the tuck shop but others splashed on to glory and ignominy. It was decided to have another replay for the medal due to the big wet so it will be played for next Saturday. Peter Clowes (15) stunned the others with a wet weather round right from the top shelf when he came in with a nett 65 to win by the length of the straight and half way back the back side. In B Grade, from which few ducks come, just over half the golfers gave in to the sodden greens and ceased play at the tuck shop where warmth, a sausage sizzle and the occasional beverage was on offer. It was left to Seppy Krummenacher (21) to represent the grade when his nett 75 was easily good enough for victory. Peter Glasscock (16) was the only other golfers to card a decent score with a nett 70. Clowes hogged the nearest the pins as he scooped the pool on the 4th, 7th, 13th and the pro pin and it was left to John Fisher to break Clowes’ run with a win on the 13th. Wednesday’s Opulently Faceted Golf (OFG) was a stableford event which obviously tickled the fancy of John Piggott when he hit form in a big way to amass 47 points to win in a common canter. Mick Petrie followed him in with 37 while Bobby Kennedy and John Carvill both played to their handicaps for 36 points apiece. Next Saturday is a stroke event where 16 of the best scoring members will qualify to compete for the match play championship for 2016.

The Isuzu range is noted for its durability, reliability and quality. 155357

The huge showroom is great for checking out your next Isuzu. 155357

They know about these utes GENESIS Motors in Ringwood, Victoria, was established in March 2011 and since then has prided itself on being a standalone business that centres on customer needs. Dealer principal Sumil Salgadoe has over eight years of experience, starting at the Isuzu ute head office in Brisbane in 2008. Mr Salgadoe said he believed in the Isuzu brand. He believed that Isuzu utes were durable, reliable and of the highest quality. “We offer great customer service, excellent product knowledge and personalised service,” he said. They have now opened a new branch in Lilydale and aim to focus on the same principles of reliability, customer service and the best quality products. Genesis Motors not only sells long lasting and resilient trucks, but stocks genuine Isuzu ute parts, accessories and also services new and used Isuzu utes. Because the team at Genesis Motors only deals with Isuzu utes, they are extremely well experienced and can offer premium service on all vehicles. Mr Salgadoe said the success of the range spoke for itself. “Due to the reliability and durability of the Isuzu product, the Isuzu J-Su ute won the best customer satisfaction award, behind Lexus,” Mr Salgadoe said. Mr Salgadoe said their aim was to be the best customer-satisfied dealership in the Isuzu franchise. Visit Genesis Motors at 49 Bond Street, Ringwood, or visit them at their new location 461 Maroondah Highway, Lilydale. For further details, contact 9879 7776.
