Cash splash leads to poll By JESSE GRAHAM THE major parties are finishing off their campaigns for Casey with funding announcements for sporting groups and legal centres, as voters prepare to head to the polls on Saturday, 2 July. On Thursday, 16 June, Labor candidates for Deakin and Chisholm Tony Clark and Stefanie Perri announced that the Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) would receive $450,000 over three years if their party wins government. The announcement will provide funding for ECLC’s Yarra Ranges centre in Healesville, which provides free legal advice on a range of issues, including homelessness and family violence. CEO Michael Smith welcomed the announcement, and said it would give the organisation “certainty”, ahead of a $240,000 funding cut on 1 July, 2017. “While that’s still 12 months to go, it still leaves the staff and the communities we work with with some uncertainty about what’s going to happen after that,” he said. The organisation had previously raised the possibility of closing its Healesville office due to funding cuts under a previous budget - but had its funding reinstated by Casey MP Tony Smith. Labor’s Casey candidate, Hovig Melkonian, called on Mr Smith and the Coalition to match the funding announcement, but a spokesperson for the government did not comment on whether the funding would be matched. Mr Smith, meanwhile, pledged $280,000 in funding for netball court lighting in Healesville and Montrose, and new courts with lighting for Coldstream. If the Coalition is re-elected, $140,000 will be provided for lighting at Healesville and Montrose, while another $140,000 will be used for converting old tennis courts to netball courts, with light-

CFA VOLUNTEER firefighters from the Maroondah Group will rally on Saturday, 2 July, against what they say is a union take-over of the CFA - and many have labelled an attack on democracy. A convoy of fire vehicles will travel from Warrandyte to Healesville as part of the volunteer brigades’ ‘Hands Off The CFA’ campaign. Brigades taking part are Mt Evelyn, Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek , Healesville, Badger Creek, Mooroolbark, Warrandyte, South Warrandyte, Wonga Park, Chirnside Park and Lilydale. CFA volunteer brigades have rallied across the state in recent weeks as the bitter, protracted and complex dispute between the CFA and the United Firefighters Union (UFU) representing paid firefighters has spiralled out of control. Group Officer for Maroondah, Ken Reid from Mount Evelyn, encouraged members of the public to support the volunteers as they make their way through Warrandyte, leaving at 9am, to Wonga Park then Chirnside Park, Mooroolbark, Mt Evelyn, Lilydale, Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, Healesville and Badger Creek, finishing in Healesville.

Work for a better world By PETER DOUGLAS ANIMAL Justice Party’s Leah Folloni says a desire to create a better world for her young children was a major driver behind her candidacy. The La Trobe candidate and mother of two said the party’s platform, of promoting kindness to all beings, appealed to what she would like to achieve. “I live and I am a business owner in the Hills,” she said. “I have two young boys, aged 2 and nearly 4, and have a property with many rescue animals. “I am running because I firmly believe in the Animal Justice Party values of kindness, nonviolence, equality and rationality. “I want my children to grow up in a world where we treat others as we would like to be treated.” Evidently, Ms Folloni also feels the need to make a difference. The causes she is most passionate about include an end to wildlife slaughter and the introduction of an Independent Office of Animal Welfare. “There are so many atrocities happening to animals all around us and the Animal Justice Party was formed to fight these injustices from a political standpoint,” she said. “Laws to prevent animal cruelty are possible now and we are using our votes and influence to make the big parties introduce laws to protect animals.” She also supports her party’s stance on an end to greyhound racing and factory farming. Ms Folloni said voters should not underestimate the party’s capacity to affect change. “A vote for the Animal Justice Party is not a wasted vote,” she said. “A vote for the AJP is very powerful and sends a strong message to the other parties that animals matter and that they need to do more to protect them.” More information on the party can be found at www.ajpvic.org.au. *This article forms part of a series to highlight parties and candidates vying for the seat of La Trobe

Wood pride of lions By PETER DOUGLAS TRADITIONALLY, it’s fair to say the Animal Justice Party is no fan of the Liberal Party. In fact, before this year’s federal election, it had preferenced a Liberal candidate last on 39 out of 40 occasions. The exception is incumbent La Trobe MP Jason Wood, to whom the party has announced their preference support. The unlikely union formed after Mr Wood campaigned on the issue of trophy hunting. Senate candidate for the Animal Justice Party Bruce Poon said the party would support anyone committed to animal welfare. “We initially approached Jason
to congratulate him on his work, but also to talk about other issues we could address,” Mr Poon said. “In particular, a campaign on a ban for animal testing in the cosmetics industry.” Mr Poon said the Greens and Labor had committed their support, but not the (Liberal) Government. “We worked with Mr Wood and he brought the party along to support that legislation,” he said. “They are now committed to introducing it within 100 days after re-election.” The preference deal had its origins with Ferny Creek animal activist Donalea Patman. Ms Patman from For the Love of Wildlife sought support for her cam-
paign to help endangered lions. However she said it was a tough path to receive parliamentary support. “After visiting Africa many times I realised that African wildlife is under siege,” she said. “When I came back, I thought ‘what can I do? How can I contribute?’” She started lobbying many animal organisations and community leaders, but many would not pay attention. Eventually, she wrote a letter to Mr Wood, who still took some convincing. But upon viewing footage of canned hunting in Africa, Mr Wood took an interest in the campaign and
helped bring it into a political forum. Ms Patman said many people were not aware of the precariousness of the situation. “Lions are actually closer to extinction than the rhinos,” she said. “Many tourists are duped into participating in cub petting, cub feeding or lion walking ... but these animals are, in fact, bred for the bullet.” Ms Patman said while there was plenty left to do she was hopeful the group could work together and achieve further positive outcomes. * This article forms part of the Mail’s series which aims to highlight La Trobe parties and candidates before the federal election on Saturday 2 July.

Moving act of kindness By PETER DOUGLAS THE saying ‘no good deed goes unnoticed’ rings true for one Ferntree Gully local. After campaigning strongly for others in need, over many years, Catherine Bye received a dose of good karma in the form of a lifechanging wheelchair. The donation came after a chance meeting, and will significantly improve her independence, allowing her to complete tasks such as shopping, feeding her pet chooks, or simply heading outdoors more often to enjoy the nice weather. When she was just in her teens, Catherine was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, which is a degenerative disease that affects the central nervous system. She believes there could be fewer than 500 people in Australia with FA, with most of those with the disorder eventually needing full-time use of a wheelchair. “I first remember having difficulties with co-ordination, and I thought, something is not right,” she said. “It took them some time to work out exactly what was wrong, but they finally diagnosed me with FA.”
Catherine said it was a genetic disorder, where both parents should be carriers of the gene. But, even then, only one in four people will develop symptoms of FA, which include slurring of speech, difficulty swallowing and numbness of limbs. “Neither of my parents were aware they carried the gene, and most people are unaware they’re carriers,” she said. She said not much was widely known about FA, and there was much research to be done, which was one reason she sat on the committee of Friedreich’s Ataxia Association of Victoria and had helped with numerous fundraising initiatives. But it seems all that good work was being noticed, with a chance meeting between their friend, musician Ben Kelly, and a Good Samaritan seeking to find a good home for the motorised wheelchair, which comes complete with a scissor-lift seat. Chair donor Steve Cowling met Ben while the musician was busking, which proved the link in finding the right home for the wheelchair. Mr Cowling said the
wheelchair had been in the possession of his now deceased father. “It’s a really good chair, so we wanted to give it to someone who really needed it - or who otherwise might not be able to have access to a chair,” he said. “Catherine is a lovely person, so it’s great to be able to help her. “On behalf of the entire Cowling family, we are proud and privileged to donate our wheelchair to Catherine.” Mr Cowling’s family include siblings Janice Cowling, Peter Cowling, David Cowling, Kathryn Dodd, Dawn Sanchez and Ann Worraii. Meanwhile, Catherine encouraged the community to find out more about FA and consider helping the FAAV, which is run by people with FA and their families. The organisation aims to raise awareness and provide funds for further research. FAAV also provides much-needed physical and social activities for FA until a treatment can be found. For more details on FA, or to find out how you can help, visit www.faav.com.au.

Backbone of the community IN MANY ways, community houses and learning centres are the quiet backbone of a strong community. They offer teaching, support and recreation to all walks of life and their doors are open to everyone. Education is just one aspect of how community houses and learning centres provide valuable services to the community. Community houses offer everyone in the community a chance to better themselves thorough education and training courses that maybe out of reach through traditional learning facilities. Many also offer auxiliary and extracurricular learning
spaces and classes for young people who may not fit into a mainstream school environment. With more recreational learning such as cooking classes, art classes, and exercise classes like yoga, Pilates and even boxing. Community houses are a great place to learn new skills and interact with other members of the community. That community interaction is another aspect of how community houses bring people together and strengthen neighbourhoods. Offering meeting places for community groups or helping individuals work and organise towards bringing positive social change to their area.
Community houses themselves are often the drivers behind community workshops, gatherings and fundraisers that are designed exclusively to benefit the people of their communities. Varying other services provided by community houses are just more reasons why they are such an important and valued asset of local neighbourhoods. From childcare to environmental sciences and meeting spaces to mental and physical healthcare, community houses have everything needed to create strong bonds and improve the overall social health of a community.
Exercise classes such as yoga that are run through community houses are a great way to stay in shape and meet new people. 156083

Quality training for upskilling By PETER DOUGLAS NEIGHBOURHOOD Houses and Learning Centres across Victoria are great places to connect with people in your local community. They provide social, recreational, educational and training opportunities for people to benefit from and enjoy. Many Neighbourhood Houses and Learning Centres are also known as Learn Local centres. They offer Quality Pre-accredited training funded by the Adult Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board. Quality Pre-accredited programs are short courses designed to build skills and confidence and to provide pathways to further learning or employment. Mountain District Learning Centre (MDLC) in Ferntree Gully is one of many Learn Local centres in the Outer East of Melbourne, offering Quality Pre-accredited short courses in addition to accredited training. The classes are small, friendly and encouraging. They have experienced trainers who are skilled in teaching adult learners, who may not have been in a learning environment since they were in school.

Although joining a course may be daunting for some, many people find that once they have started with a preaccredited course their potential is unlocked, their confidence grows and they find themselves coming back to another class and leaning more. Pre-accredited courses can help give you the skills you need to find employment or help build your skills to improve your opportunities for advancement in your current job. MDLC is also able to design courses for workplaces and groups that are tailored to meet specific needs. If you have a need for training, they can help to fill the gap. In term 3, commencing in July, MDLC will be running a range of engaging pre-accredited short courses including adult literacy through Read Write Now, a range of computer courses, from beginners to intermediate level, including MYOB and Excel, Bookkeeping and a new course that will introduce you to Business Administration and help you to become ’job-ready’. Mountain District Learning Centre is located at 13-15 The Avenue, Ferntee Gully. For more information, contact 9758 7859.

Pest Control said if there were any signs of infestation, do not hesitate to contact them. “Frontline uses the latest technology - Termatrc T3i - the only device that detects, confirms and tracks the presence of termites,” he said. “Our technicians are fully trained, licensed and accredited in all aspects of pest control and have access to the latest inspection and treatment products.”
If left untreated, termites can cause substantial damage to any home. Termites can convert rotting timber into soil. Mr Drury said it was important to have your house treated correctly if there were signs of infestation. However, he encouraged homeowners to avoid a do-it-yourself mentality and seek professional help. “We are a family owned, Australian
business with 20 years of experience,” he said. “We are also members of the Australian Pest Managers Association.” Mr Drury said homeowners should have at least one inspection a year. They should also remove any water leaks to the subfloor perimeter of their home. But he said the most important thing was to not disturb any infesta-
tion, simply call the pest control professionals and let them sort the issue promptly and properly. The business also specialises in the removal of more than just termites. This includes: ants, spiders, cockroaches, rodents, wasps and bees. Frontline Termite and Pest Control is located at 8 Cormilio Drive, Wandin North. Inquiries to (03) 5964 3888.

ONCE termites get into your house, initially the damage may be unseen but it can quickly become one big problem. Do yourself a favour and complete a termite check around your house. If you see mud on walls or stumps, or insects around walls - or discover hollow doorframes, skirtings or architraves - it’s best to call in the experts. David Drury of Frontline Termite

Hills in print for all the world to cherish By DARCY HENNESSY THE beautifully presented book, ‘The Dandenong Ranges’, written by Nick Anchen, features the history and many photographs of the Hills region. The book originated in 2006, when Anchen started researching the area, as well as taking some breath-taking photography. Previously, he has produced numerous books about the region, including ‘The Cuckoo’ and ‘Puffing Billy- Spirit of the Dandenongs’. But Achen said he felt com-
pelled to produce an all-inclusive book. “The lure of the chocolate-soiled mountain range always drew me back,” he said. “There was so much I could have included in the book, it could’ve been three times as big.“ The book was published by Sierra Publishing in Melbourne this year. While Anchen did much of the photography himself, there was assistance from Alex Maisey, many local friends groups, and the National Library of Victoria.
The book is perfect for the coffee table, and features photography of the flowers at the National Rhododendron Gardens and its array of multi-colour fauna. Also, there are seasonal photos from around the mountains; and wildlife of all kinds, including a section on the haunt of the lyrebird. History is another element of the book, featuring a brief history of Kalorama to Sassafras, as well as the story of the famous train of Mount Dandenong Puffing
Billy. Anchen’s book also captures and documents the tragedic history of the region, which includes many bushfires and the infamous plane crash at Kyeema. For more information, contact Sierra Publishing on 0417 250 166, or visit www. sierraaustralia.com. Anchen will be present at two upcoming launches of the book. Firstly, at Rainy Day Books at The Basin, on Friday, 1 July, between 5pm and 7pm. Then, at the Belgrave Book Barn on Saturday, 2 July, between 11am and 1pm.
The Dandenong Ranges book is sure to entertain many readers in the hills area. 155953
Kelly living dream HILLS musician Ben Kelly will live out a lifelong dream when he plays a show with musical hero Nicky Bomba. Kelly and Bomba will perform at the Sooki Lounge on 1 July. Kelly’s set starts at 9am, while Nicky’s will start at 10am. Bomba is best known for his work with the John Butler Trio, Joe Camilleri, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Bustamento and The Truth. Kelly is a local hills musician and lifetime resident of the Dandenong Ranges. He said he was extremely excited at the prospect of the
show. “Nicky is at the top of the industry and one of my favourite, most respected artists in the country,” he said. The collaboration came about while Kelly lived in the back of his van, touring around the country. Some sad occurrences took place which made him contact Bomba about 12 months ago. A friend of Kelly’s, Alex Legg, died of cancer at the end of 2014. This devastated not only him, but the whole music community because Alex was such a strong and supportive figure of the community. With mortality in mind, Kel-
ly decided to make an achievement and this was to record a new album. So he contacted his favourite artist in the country, on a whim, and asked him if he would help produce the album. After a few back and forth emails to his management, one late Saturday evening Kelly received a phone call. “Hey Ben, it’s Nicky,“ Kelly recalled. “I nearly fell off the Earth”. The Sooki Lounge is located at 1648 Burwood Highway, Belgrave. For more information contact (03) 9754 7567.

Connecting people and communities
Letters There were hecklers AS A witness on the night of the Tecoma La Trobe candidates meet, I feel the need to address the recent ‘Mail’ article (Candidate regret over comments, 21 June, 2016) regarding the community’s response to Leah Folloni of the Animal Justice Party. I have long been a proud resident of the Hills, but on this night I was somewhat disappointed with the community’s behaviour. When I saw the terribly narrowminded social media postings of several previously respected community members following this event, I felt more than disappointed; I felt ashamed. We are better than this. I have been to several of these candidate meets before, hence my concern regarding the process of this one. There were no rules explained at the start regarding the need to respect one another and to only speak when called upon. Furthermore, there was no initial five-minute floor time for each candidate to introduce themselves, despite my being led to believe that getting to know the person behind their policies is main reason for these meet-ups. The pre-planned questions of the crowd gathered were clearly the reason for this event and yet I question the readiness of most to listen to answers respectfully given by Ms Folloni. While it is clear Ms Folloni, having rightly felt rather attacked, was exaggerating (as we often to when supposedly privately debriefing with friends) regarding the supposed 100 people yelling at her, at several stages there was most certainly at least half a dozen or more voices all yelling out over the top of each other. The tone was aggressive. When the mediator finally intervened and moved on to a different topic, several members of the audience continued shouting out snide remarks about the preferencing deci-
Email diary entries to: editor@yvnews. com.au by 5pm Wednesdays sions. Indeed, we are entitled to our opinion; but when such an event happens, with such fallout, in my community, I am saddened to see democracy not functioning as it should. Doug Williams, Belgrave.
Promise kept? JAMES Merlino, member for Monbulk, did promise, in discussion with CFA volunteers, that the EBA under negotiation would be fair and balanced to all parties concerned. This promise was made three weeks ago. Let us look if the local member has kept his promise. * The Minister of Emergency Services, Jane Garrett, sacked/resigned; * The CFA board sacked; and * The CFA CEO, Lucinda Nolan; sacked/ resigned. Our local member, as the new minister of emergency services, is now taking charge of slowly demolishing the CFA volunteer structure in Victoria. James Merlino has lost the confidence of the community in the Hills and he will have to live with the legacy of having put a knife in the back of all volunteers just to satisfy his union mates. Shame on you, Mr Merlino. Leo van Alphen, The Patch.
Thought bubbles ONCE again, with elections about to start, our local (La Trobe) Coalition candidate, Jason Wood, is again exploding with thought bubbles like widening the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road for cars and bicycles. Had he bothered to look at what are the acceptable widths of doublebike lanes, he would have found they are - when retrofitting to roads - to be 2.5m to 3m. Then, there is the envelope space between cars and the bike path. But wait, he has more ... he also, along with the road widening and bicycle paths, wants to create the vil-
lages of Mount Dandenong walkway for pedestrians. All this would require an approximate width of another road, to the present one, and maybe more. This whole exercise would result in severe cutting of both embankments and properties. I cannot think how the congestion would be controlled when the road passes through Sassafras, Olinda or the Mount Dandenong Village; who even now have parking problems for tourists every weekend throughout the year, especially summer. He is supported by the Yarra Ranges Mayor (Jason Callinan) who cannot even place signs (single file only for bicycles) on the present tourist road for the time being, like that put up by the Knox Council for Mountain Highway. If he could just do things like putting in toilets at Sassafras and Mount Dandenong Village and improve the parking at all the stations, we, both traders and the public, would be a lot happier. Jane Adams, Olinda.

Cockatoo Election Market
TO ALL Monbulk electorate voters, in November 2018, remember the following: (Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP) James Merlino was hands-on in ramming through the UFU (United Firefighters Union) agreement with the CFA. James Merlino sacked the CFA board because they did not agree with him. James Merlino picked a new board based on them signing the UFU agreement. James Merlino, along with (Victorian Premier) Dan Andrews, has destroyed the ethos of the CFA by their actions. James Merlino does not deserve and should not be re-elected in November 2018. Surprise defeat for Olinda By CAMERON HUTCHISON
Yea and Gembrook after their big win over Thornton. Alexandra kept Thornton goalless in the first, and with five goals to one in the second gave Alexandra a lead of 49 points at half-time. With Alexandra kicking another five goals in the third quarter had extended the lead to 76 points at the final break. Thornton kicked three goals in the last, but Alexandra was able to kick seven goals to secure an impressive 101 point win.
THE weather report did not flatter the valley on Saturday. But to everyone’s surprise, some (more than others) rain held off with some interesting results. Warburton-Millgrove surprised the ladder leaders Olinda with a 6-point win. Healesville ran away from Upwey in the end to now sit equal top with Olinda and Wandin. Kinglake easily accounted for Yarra Glen. Yea easily dealt with Gembrook and now shares fourth spot with Gembrook and Alexandra. Certainly no easy tipping in Division 2.

Olinda had a bit more of the ball in the first, but could not kick straight and took a slim 3-point lead into the second quarter. However, Olinda struck back in the third quarter kicking 4.2 to 1.4 and reduced the margin to 11 points at threequarter time. Indirect kicking by both sides in the last had the game see-sawing from end to end but Olinda could just not find the big sticks as Warburton ran out six point winners. Warburton Millgrove Best: J. Iacono (1), P. Sharp, T. Walker, T. McKail, S. Andueza, L. Barnard. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: K. Currie, C. Beattie, M. Hottes, L. Taylor (2), N. Keegan (1), M. Wright. MONBULK 19.6(120) D EMERALD 12.5(77)
The first quarter was tough-going and the scorers were not challenged much as Monbulk managed to take a slim three-point lead into the second quarter. In an entertaining second quarter, the hosts kicked 7.5 to hold a lead of 26 points at half-time. Emerald outscored Monbulk in the third, but was still 21 points behind Monbulk. Monbulk had a blinder in the last and kicked an impressive seven straight to Emerald’s 3.2 to come away with a very comfortable win at the final siren. Monbulk Best: S. McBride (5), S. Williams (4), P. Barge (1), B. Emmett (2), L. Jurey, S. Gough (2). Emerald Best: N. Jansen (3), C. Porter (3), P. White (2), B. Wood (1), M. Steer (1), J. It was all tied up at quarter time with both kicking 5.3, until Upwey took a 10-point lead at the main break and look to be in control. Healesville came out in the third and kicked 5.9 to 1.1 to take a 22-point lead into the last quarter. Another 5.5 to 2.1 had Healesville secure an impressive 44-point win. Healesville Best: B. Mount Evelyn took an early lead of 12 points into the second quarter and that is really where it stopped. Wandin kicked 5.5 to 4 behinds in the second and had a healthy lead of 19 points at half-time. Another 5 goals by Wandin to
Wandin and Mount Evelyn played some solid netball in the cool conditions. 156088 Mount Evelyn’s 3 had the lead extend to 32 points at three-quarter time. Wandin had their confidence up and was never going to let this one slip. They piled on another 6.6 to 2.1 to get some payback for their Round 1 defeat. Wandin Best: S. McDonnell, T. Hinds (2), B. Belgrave were never really in the hunt on Saturday as Woori Yallock had finally found the football they knew they could play. A huge 6.3 to two behinds set up the day and it was going to be chasing the Tigers’ tail all day for the Magpies. Woori Yallock had a commanding lead of 42 points at the main break. Their kicking was a bit wayward in the third kicking 3.7 to 1.2 but was able to rectify that in the last quarter to kick 4.3 to one goal straight as they defeated Belgrave by 80 points. An impressive win by Woori Yallock sees them in touch with the top 5. Woori Yallock Best: K. Busoli (2), T. Campbell, K. Thompson, J. Williamson, J. Williams (3), B. Monkhorst (4). Belgrave Best: J. This game was vitally important for both clubs. It was certainly fresh on top of the mountain and the ground was heavy. Kinglake came out with more intent in the first to lead by nine points heading into the second quarter. Kinglake held Yarra Glen to 1.1 in the second while the hosts kicked 5.6 to have a commanding lead at halftime. Despite being outscored in the second quarter, Yarra Glen were able to outscore Kinglake in the third; however, the margin was still 29 points at

How the heck can anybody tip a winner? Yea came out and blitzed in the first quarter, kicking 5.3 to 2.2 and held a 19-point lead at quarter time. Yea really turned it on in the second, kicking 7.4, while holding Gembrook to 2.2. The lead had extended to 51 points and it was looking pretty ugly for Gembrook. Another 7 goals to 2 in the third and the game was well and truly over but the last quarter was one of the best that Yea has played all year. A score of 9.3 to just a solitary behind to Gembrook and the final margin
was 140 points. Yea Best: J. Flynn (1), B. Cunningham (4), D. Evans (1), M. Ivill (5), A. Hobbs (7), J. Marasco. Gembrook Cockatoo Best: D. Leversha, M. Maddison, L. Scott, A. Mitchell, L. Henzen, S. Richardson (1). POWELLTOWN 27.14(176) D YARRA JUNCTION 13.10(88)

Belgrave girls’ first
White is the water wizard
BELGRAVE JUNIOR FOOTBALL BELGRAVE Junior Football Club has celebrated a piece of club history, when its first ever girls team won their first ever game. Belgrave has a female coach, Andrea McGuinness, and it’s the first season fielding a girls’ team. The girls played their hearts out to get on the winners’ list, after losing to Bayswater earlier in the season. Everyone at the club, all the girls and their families, have been waiting a long time for the win. The team has gone from strength to strength this season, starting out with nine players and building to have 22 on its list. They are looking to field an Under 12s and Under 15s girls team next year; as well as Under 8s, 9s, 10s,12s and 14s in the boys. It was a huge day for the club, with the Under 10s boys and Under 12s boys winning as well. It was the first win for the Under 12s this year, too. The resurgence of the club is fantastic to see. They’ve gone from only fielding one team in the entire club last year, to having three this year and all winning on the same day. Hard work from the players, coaching staff and committee has finally paid off. Success in a club isn’t about the number of games won overall; it’s measured by the improvement of skills, the players developing confidence and self-esteem and all players having fun. They have ticked all these boxes this season, and it’s a positive culture and vibe around the club.
EMERALD GOLF WHEN you consider the fact I live next to the Emerald Golf course, and I had taken much water out of my rain gauge for 10 days in a row, the course was in excellent condition. The ducks loved it, the geese loved it and the frogs were hopping in a synchronised formation across the first. Still, the members turned up because, on Saturday, they play golf. End of story. Graham White (16) stood tall in the mush to head the leaders’ sheet with 35 stableford points. He was the only player to get near his handicap. Allan Ecclestone (23) returned to some form when he headed up the B Grade crowd with 33 points as an indicator of the slosh to play through. Leigh Morison, Sepp Krummenacher and Dean Shannon all managed 32 points while Dave Mackey, Peter Clowes and Peter Glasscock came in with 31. Jeffrey Marsh was nearest the pin on the 4th, John Fisher on the 7th and 12th, Ecclestone the 13th and Krummenacher slipped the soggy notes into his pocket for the pro pin 18th. The ladies’ comp saw a small but dogged group who fought on through the morass, until it was Phillipa Crossley who finished with the win by one shot from Brianna McCoy. On Wednesday, when the sun shone on the Old and Feeble Golfers, a three-man ambrose game was ordered. In the end, it was the father/son combo of Graham and Ash White, ably assisted by Bobby Kennedy, who held on for a great win scoring a nett 62. They were followed home by Ben Balfour, Gerran Wright and Dennis Fuller, who teamed for 63 to be one back but out of the race. Next Saturday will be a stroke event for the July monthly medal. - Dennis Fuller

Motoring Watch out on winter roads WITH an arctic blast expected to sweep across south eastern Australia in the coming days, RACV is warning motorists to be prepared and take extra care when driving in winter conditions. The Bureau of Meteorology is warning of blizzard conditions in large parts of Victoria. RACV Manager Vehicle Engineering, Michael Case, said driving in severe weather could be challenging and dangerous and motorists should slow down and be prepared. “Poorly prepared vehicles, driving too fast and failure to treat the icy conditions with respect can lead to accidents and damage to vehicles,” he said. “Check your tyres, windscreen wipers, the battery, lights, brakes, heater and cooling system before heading off. “When driving in the snow, drive to the conditions and take it easy. “Even if the snow has been cleared, the road is still likely to be slippery and black ice is always a danger. “In wet weather use your air-conditioner to prevent your windscreen from fogging up. “However if visibility is so limited that you can’t see the edges of the road
or other vehicles at a safe distance, it’s time to pull over and wait for the conditions to ease. “If it is foggy don’t put your lights on high beam as this makes the road harder to see. “Instead use low beam, as this keeps the light on the road and fog lamps if the conditions are bad enough.” Mr Case said rain, slush and mud were particularly hard on vehicles and he advised drivers to get their vehicle serviced regularly. “You will spend less money servicing it than you will on towing and fixing it, if you break down,” he said. RACV research has found that tyres were often neglected with one in five cars on Victoria’s roads found to have at least one unroadworthy tyre. “I cannot stress enough how important tyres are to a car’s safety. Tyres must have plenty of tread depth, correct pressure and no damage and make sure the spare is on board and in good condition,” he said. “The recommended minimum tyre pressures for individual vehicles are listed on a plate inside the driver’s door jamb or glovebox.”
Ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter driving conditions. 156080
LandCruiser torture tested
The Toyota LandCruiser is still one of the toughest vehicles on Australian roads. 156076
TOYOTA’S Australian engineers have subjected the upcoming LandCruiser 70 Series upgrade to more than 100,000km of testing in some of the harshest conditions around the country. About 70 per cent of the testing was conducted in off-road conditions, including everything from corrugated dirt roads to rugged cattle properties with severe washouts. Local testing and evaluation, which focused on the best-selling single cab-chassis, has confirmed the new vehicle will be even stronger due to the adoption of a stiffer new frame with thicker side rails, reducing vibration and improving handling and stability. The Australian engineers have tuned new safety features including vehicle stability and traction control for optimum performance in areas where the vehicle is mostly used - dirt roads, rural properties and country highways. All 70 Series variants - sin-
gle and double cab-chassis, wagon and troop carrier - will be equipped with these safety features as well as hill-start assist control, trailer sway control, brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution and cruise control. The single cab is expected to attract the maximum five-star safety rating with five airbags, gaining curtain-shield airbags and a driver’s knee airbag in addition to the existing driver and front-passenger airbags. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said the updates, due to arrive in the last quarter of 2016, have been made possible by a substantial commitment of engineering resources and investment by the company in Japan and in Australia. “The upgraded 70 Series LandCruiser range builds on this iconic vehicle’s fit-for-purpose appeal with improvements that reinforce its heavy-duty abilities, durability and unapolo-
getically rugged character,“ Mr Cramb said. “At the same time, it receives important safety and emissions updates that are required by many customers - as well as regulators - to enable Toyota to continue selling the 70 Series in the Australian market.” The new range retains the 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine with common-rail direct injection and an intercooler, which will be certified to the Euro 5 emissions standard. It will also be fitted with piezo injectors for even better response at low engine speeds. The manual-only transmission is retained with revised gearing aimed at improving fuel economy and lowering noise, vibration and harshness. Local engineers, who returned the suspension by adjusting spring and damper rates to match the stiffer new frame, also confirmed the suitability of the set-up for Australian conditions.
