Made from Bluescope Australian Steel Full service - Slab, Erection & Councils Braving the cold on Mt McKenzie near Tenterfield on Monday night are Brooke, Hayden, Mark and Vanessa Wallis from Warwick with Gaye Yeowart from the Gold Coast. The snow was falling but not settling and storm chaser TERRY WEST was on-hand to capture the white stuff. While there’s little chance the real thing will fall this weekend, there will still be plenty of man-made snow and ice action across the border in Stanthorpe. STANTHORPE is the coolest place in Queensland - or at least it will be this weekend according to organisers of the Snowflake In Stanthorpe festival. The festival, originally the brainchild of four energetic young women in 2013, will be a three-day celebration of everything cold according to media spokesperson Nicola Holly. “Everybody has been super excited, there is a really great buzz around down,” she said. “There is a really nice Christmassy feel, all the shops are decorated with snowflakes.” The festival almost received an early present when it snowed across the border on Monday night but while it may not snow for real in the town this year (though you never know). Nicola said the event would still have plenty to keep people occupied with visitors expected to come from throughout the Southern Downs out to Brisbane and the Coast and across the border. The three day event sees an ice rink, an industrial snow machine, an eight metre human snow globe and a snowman building competition. “The ice skating will be the big thing and it will be opening on Friday and operating over the three days,” she said. “And of course our big snowfield will be another big drawcard.” She said the festival was inspired by the uniqueness of the area and Stanthorpe’s reputation as

Grew up: Chinchilla Based: Warwick Vision for Maranoa: A place where my boys want to live because there’s great opportunity to get ahead and it’s a safe place to live. Your job: Regional agribusiness banking manager and small business owner Embarrassing: Losing the elastic in my pants while chasing a cricket ball in front of a large crowd of ladies. Pub meal: T-bone chips and vegies Greatest achievement: My three boys Tom, Hugh and Harry Childhood memory: Working on the family farm and lots of sport around Chinchilla. Community involvement: President of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, president Inglewood Cricket Club Nickname: DLP Why run for Maranoa? To help Maranoa take advantage of the enormous opportunity that lay ahead of us so as to make this a great place to live for generations to come, but above all to help people. Favourite book: The Man in the Mirror - Wayne Bennett Favourite movie: Shawshank Redemption Favourite country visited: Germany Marriage equality: It should be the people’s decision not politicians, so a plebiscite is the right thing. I will vote no in the plebiscite. Transport: continued investment in road and rail infrastructure will open Maranoa up to the world. We have what the world wants so this investment is critical. The coalition has spent more than $650m on roads in Maranoa over the last three years alone and will spend $590m on the inland rail which will finalise a corridor from Goondiwindi to Toowoomba that could include Warwick. Negative gearing: I support current negative gearing arrangements. Labor’s proposal would reduce house prices and drive up rents. The majority of people who use negative gearing are middle income earners such as teachers and nurses who use it to get their families ahead Medicare: the Coalition will not privatise Medi-
care. That’s a desperate Bill Shorten line trying to scare people. Medicare is important to all Australians and the Coalition is committed to supporting it. Preference - dogs or cats: Dogs.
Lynette Keehn, One Nation Grew up: Country Victoria. Based: 2 Jandowae QLD. Vision for Maranoa: A thriving productive inland electorate. Your job: My career is on hold at the moment, previously a bio refinery control operator and chemical analyst. Embarrassing moment: Opening the bedroom door of my 16-year-old son’s room. Pub meal: Chicken Parmigiana. Greatest achievement: Raising my children running a bio refinery from grain intake to product exit: the complete process from start to finish. Childhood memory: Family and feeding poddies with buckets of milk, loved it. Community involvement: CWA , fully support charity events however I can. Nickname: I’m known as Lyndy by my family and Lynnie by my friends. Why run for Maranoa: Huge parts of Maranoa are in a state of turmoil; her issues are severe and nothing has been done for the past 20 odd years, we need action now. My motive I raised my hand to be the people’s voice, I have travelled through the Maranoa electorate and I’m alarmed to see the amount of shops shut down, houses for sale. Alarming stories residents have confided to me- we must be represented by ordinary candidates that know what hard knocks are. Favourite book: Biographies I like the truth. Favourite movie: I would watch a documentary on anything over a movie, unless it had Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp in it. Favourite country visited: Never been overseas, too much to do in Australia, my dollar stays here. Marriage equality: Australia should vote on this matter. Transport: Rail get our rail back up and going, it’s a wasted resource as it sits now, it could contribute greatly to the tourist trade in Maranoa.
Negative gearing: Limits are required, so it helps the little people for whom it was designed for. Medicare: This country needs a good sound across the board scheme accessible by all without financial penalty. Dogs or cats: I can’t choose between them.
David Kerrigan, ALP Grew up: Longreach Based: Barcaldine Vision for Maranoa: Work hard to make Maranoa a marginal seat, it’s the only way to get the support the electorate needs. Your job: Alcohol and drugs co-ordinator / suicide prevention project manager Embarrassing: Singing Happy Birthday at a team meeting, wondering whose birthday, and it was mine. Pub meal: Any roast. Greatest achievement: Fatherhood and having loving and close relationships with family and friends, mostly my wife. Childhood memory: Very happy and having so much freedom in a close community. Community involvement: I’m involved in several organisations, some are Men’s Shed, events and rugby league, juniors and seniors. Nickname: Kero Why run for Maranoa: To help people on a larger scale. Favourite book: Riding This Road by Joy McKean Favourite movie: Godfather Part 2 Favourite country visited: Fiji Marriage equality: All people should be able to marry who they choose. Transport: Toyota Avalon Negative gearing: This system has to change, young people are disadvantaged more and more, it is so hard for the younger generations to own their own home. Medicare: The future of Healthcare is so important, why are the LNP forcing us to pay for essential scans and tests costing hundreds of dollars. Dogs or cats: We have both and love them all. 1213236-DJ03-16

The event was organised by the Southern Downs Suicide Prevention and Support Group - a group initiated by John and Ann Felton following the loss of their daughter. Rates up four per cent in council budget balancing act THE new-look Southern Downs Regional Council's first budget, adopted this week, will include a $22.7 million capital works program for projects including upgrades to the Warwick Aerodrome and Stanthorpe’s early flood warning system. Southern Downs mayor Tracy Dobie said she was pleased to deliver the 2016/2017 annual budget on behalf of the council and the community. “This budget is financially responsible. It has been developed in line with the council’s Long Term Financial Plan, and we have been able to maintain a four per cent general rate rise, along with the discount of 7.5 per cent on the general rate,” she said. “Balances have been struck between working towards our long-term financial sustainability, delivering value for money services and investing in, and developing the Southern Downs as a great place to live, work and unwind. “The council has a key focus on attracting new businesses, new residents and new visitors to the region, to stimulate our local economies, to create new jobs, and to grow our population into the future. “To support this, we’re investing in our future by providing much needed assets including water, wastewater and waste

infrastructure. The council will deliver a $22.7 million capital works program to ensure the region’s infrastructure assets are not only maintained, but improved, to meet increasing demand for these services. “This capital funding is made up of $13.9 million from general revenue, $7.8 million coming from the council’s success in leveraging a number of State and Federal government capital works grants, and the balance of $929,500 from other capital sources. “The council is committed to continuous improvement, and we will review the services we deliver to the community on a quarterly basis, to identify further areas for savings and efficiencies. “For the first time, the new budget process undertaken this year provided the
opportunity to the Southern Downs community to review and provide input about the draft budget. So, this is a budget that belongs, not only to the council, but importantly, to our community, and I thank everyone that attended the information sessions, and provided submissions and presentations to the council. “I also want to thank our very dedicated staff across all areas of the organisation and particularly chief executive officer David Keenan, finance and information technology manager Andrew Page and the finance team for their work in delivering today’s budget. “This is a budget that aims to minimise the impact on the hip pocket while continuing to build and strengthen the communities of the Southern Downs,” Cr Dobie said.

Casual approach is a gift REPRESENTATIVES from the Stanthorpe and Warwick Branches of the Leukaemia Foundation had plenty of reasons to smile last week. The representatives were presented with a donation by Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Tracy Dobie at the June general council meeting. The money was raised by council staff who have been going ‘Casual for a Cause’. Cr Dobie said the Leukaemia Foundation was the latest local not for profit community organisation nominated by staff to receive donations under a staff initiative called ‘Casual for a Cause’. “Council administration and library staff dressed down and made donations throughout April and May, and I’m very proud to be able to present our next very worthy recipients, the Stanthorpe and Warwick branches of the Leukaemia
Foundation, with staff donations totalling almost $1000. “Sadly, many residents in communities across the Southern Downs have been touched by leukaemia, whether it’s a personal journey of their own or witnessing and supporting their loved ones ravaged by this insidious disease. “The support provided by the Leukaemia Foundation and its local members here in the Southern Downs is truly appreciated by those families and by the broader community. “Council’s Casual for a Cause initiative makes it easy for staff to show their support for important services, and particularly those that are volunteer-based like our local branches of the Leukaemia Foundation, through a co-ordinated donation program.” The mayor also announced that The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Ap-

with a certificate and an Australian native plant as a welcome gift from the council. “We hope these plants take pride of place in the gardens of our new citizens
and grow alongside them and their families,” Cr Dobie said. “Choosing to become an Australian citizen is a very significant expression of a person’s pride in being part of
Australia’s dynamic, diverse and multicultural society, and on behalf of the council, I congratulate each of our new citizens on their decision to become an Australian Citizen.”

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s Warwick chamber was packed to the rafters last week with family and friends who gathered to witness 26 new citizens welcomed by the council at its June general meeting. Southern Downs mayor Tracy Dobie said she was delighted to see such a large group of excited and happy people at the Council Chambers and especially the family members of the new citizens. “It’s very special to be part of their day as they become an Australian citizen and we were all proud to sing the national anthem with them and take photos of this important ceremony,” she said. Field trip down memory lane Casey’s tips
FIELD trips are a highlight on the school calendar for Warwick West students, and last week 55 Year 2 students jumped at the chance to explore olden-day transport at Toowoomba’s Cobb and Co Museum. Year 2 teacher Charlene Newton said that this particular trip was designed to reinforce the class history unit, contrasting the past and the present, in particular looking at how games, transport and kitchen appliances have changed over time. “In three groups and on 30-minute rotations, children explored the museum and conducted a letter search, as well as played olden-day games such as marbles, quoits, skipping, knuckles and hoops,” she said. “A highlight was playing inside the ‘touch and feel’ room, which looked at how much effort, is required to generate power.” Tony Coonan from Cobb & Co Museum delivered the final tour and talk about
olden-day transport. He showed his eager audience the cart which collected the toilet cans from the outhouses, which the kids thought would have been a terrible job. Mrs Newton chalked the day up as a big success for students, teachers and accompanying parents and welcomed the praise from Mr Coonan on how wellbehaved the students were. “While the purpose of trips such as this is to educate and reinforce what is being taught in the classroom, they are also a fun, bonding experience for everyone involved with Cobb and Co Museum, the students could explore novel things in an authentic setting,” she said. A day of excitement and learning at Cobb and Co was rounded out by a walk to Queens Park, where the children enjoyed a picnic lunch and play time before heading back to Warwick on the bus, which rocked a few tired little people to sleep.

Increase leaves him low AFTER seeing the report that the Southern Downs Regional Council has decided to increase rates and charges by another four per cent for the ensuring rating period I was disheartened by their decision. While I can sympathise with the financial position the council has to deal with, I believe the council has lost sight of the position that the ratepayers within the region find themselves in. The ratepayers of our region are struggling financially as it is, without the extra burden of increased rates forced upon us by the financial mismanagement of our council since the formation of the SDRC. The CPI over the last few years has been in the vicinity of 1.5 per cent to 1.8 per cent, yet we see the council raises consistently more than
double the CPI together with reduced discounts and increased charges. The council to its credit over recent times has reduced staffing from 400 plus to just over 300. The council has, I believe, also reduced the number of directors from four to two. These two decisions alone should have greatly enhanced the bottom line. If council would stop wasting money on the Emu Creek Dam research, which to my understanding very few people want or are prepared to pay for water usage, apart from some sitting councillors. Reduce the turnover on plant and equipment as the majority of plant that I have observed is still in good condition and capable of many more years of productive use. Once the finances are back in the black, council may then consider a more lenient policy in this regard. Council vehicles I understand are a problem, as a number of staff have vehicle use as part of
their salary package. These vehicles could be and should be kept for a longer period and where appropriate made available to other staff to perform their duties. Business owners within our region (myself included) are struggling due to the downturn in the economy, the effect that the internet has had on sales, reducing real estate pricing and soaring utility costs. Council needs to be aware that at all times many businesses are reducing in size or closing all together. Council should be aware that without a healthy business community, we won’t have jobs for our workers; we will have more empty houses as people leave town seeking work. Council needs to be encouraging businesses, the ones we already have and seeking to attract more business to this area. If we don’t have viable businesses, who will be around to pay council rates
and charges? If council can support what we have and keep their own house in order, we will be able to reduce council debt without pricing our people out due to excessive council rates and charges. Jim Rickard, Warwick.
Who to believe? CARBON dioxide. I have been told that vinegar and bi-carb soda, used to clean bathrooms etc, makes carbon dioxide and they say the main source of global warming is carbon dioxide. The do-gooders say this is good for the environment. Which bit do you believe? M. Johnston, Warwick.

Market warms winter buyers Paul Graham stoking the hotrod firedrum he built.
Skies lit up by the heat of the drums Ms Brosnan said safety and warmth of the drum are the key things to consider along with a creative design. “All drums are assessed for safety prior to being lit. The Family Drum category is for families and friends who don’t want to compete but just want to stay warm and be part of the fun. She said it the night was a time to gather family and friends around a warm fire for a night of fun, food and entertainment and be amazed by the fiery creations. What is a Fire Drum? “The fire drum has always been an essential item for a winter party in the Southern Downs, Ms Brosnan said. “Originally a simple 44 gallon drum with some axe holes knocked in, seven years ago the first Killarney Bonfire Night introduced the concept of the decorative and functional fire drum which is now a common feature of many backyards. “Killarney Bonfire Night includes a giant bonfire, fireworks

SNOW crowned the ridges of the mountains around Killarney the day before last year’s Bonfire Night - but the cold just attracted a bigger crowd thanks to warm fire drums and the giant bonfire. And now preparations are underway for this year’s Killarney Bonfire Night - and amateur and professional fire drum creators are invited to create their own fire drum and get involved in the event on Saturday 23 July. “Firedrums have to be beautiful and functional to be winners and they certainly proved their value last year, event coordinator Louise Brosnan said. “Each year the creativity of all the entries definitely astounds us - the fire drums are definitely the draw card of the event, Ms Brosnan continued. “We could not host such a great night without the support and enthusiasm of our fire drum creators, and we have got a couple of added surprises at this year’s event to make it even more special for them.

Snow hotspot is the coolest By TANIA PHILLIPS
Stanthorpe - the coolest place in Queensland - trying it’s hard to snow for the festival with light snow in Tenterfield on Monday night.
Stanthorpe will be the cool place to be this weekend. to doing something special in the town. “It’s exciting, it’s amazing and we’re going to have an incredible lineup of winter activities for people to do!” he said. The three-day event sees an ice rink, an industrial snow machine, an eight meter human snow globe and a snowman building competition, to name just a few events! Perfectly located in the picturesque Southern Downs, Stanthorpe is an easy drive from Toowoomba, Brisbane, coastal areas and northern New South Wales. The Snowflakes in Stanthorpe committee warmly invites visitors to celebrate all things great about winter in the coolest town in Queensland.

LET it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Snowflakes in Stanthorpe is a celebration of all things cold, in the coldest town in Queensland. The festival was originally the brainchild of four energetic young women in 2013. They thought Stanthorpe should build on its cold weather reputation and celebrate this climatic phenomenon in a day-long community event to bring visitors and tourists to the town. The first event happened on 3 July 2013 and included markets along the creek, activities in town and a snow making machine available for kids to have a snowman making competition and throw some snowballs around. An estimated 300 people quickly turned into 3000 showing that the fascination Australians have with snow in winter was still apparent. Similarly on 17 July 2015 the population of Stanthorpe swelled as visitors from neighbouring towns on both sides of the border and as far away as Brisbane and the coast descended to see, play, touch, feel, photograph, throw and bask in the snow. After these marvels, a group of community minded volunteers decided to resurrect the festival and celebrate the ‘coolest’ town in the state. The festival is jointly run between the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce and the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society. Chamber president John Bylicki said organisers were looking forward

THE Granite Belt Maze and Mini Golf rests just 8.5 km north of Stanthorpe along the old Warwick Road in a quiet country setting and is the perfect place to visit during a visit to the area for the Snowflakes festival. The surrounding district is speckled with some of Australia’s finest wineries, tasty cheeses, antique shops and accommodation. Its altitude makes it one of Australia’s highest mazes at almost 900 metres above sea level, and is the only maze and mini golf in Queensland where it snows. The mazes have been constructed with Australian hardwood and the main maze utilizes random sections of corrugated iron, it’s very Australian, rustic and extremely tough. Unlike most mazes, this maze was designed so the layout can be changed without too much effort, and customers are given cleverly designed riddles to solve while negotiating the challenges of the maze. There is a smaller maze as well with its own mind bending riddles, and a tricky nine hole mini golf course, a giant chess set and some great photo opportunities in the stocks and guillotine, so allow plenty of time for this venue. The Granite Belt Maze is ideal for all ages and is awesome fun for everyone. For more information visit thegranitebeltmaze.com.au, phone 4683 2181 or visit Facebook.

THE Howie Brothers will perform at the Tenterfield Golf Club as part of a major fundraiser for the local hospital. The event will be held at the Tenterfield Golf Club from 10.30am on Monday. This is an annual event for the popular duo although this is the first time both brothers have been able to attend the event for three years. For the past two years Graeme has been solo with John away conducting tours of Ireland and Scotland but a delay in the schedule this year means both Howie brothers will be on deck for the event. The Howie Brothers Morning Melodies will take the audience for a stroll down memory lane. The dynamic duo have been performing together for more 30 years and are renowned for their distinctive vocal harmony sound. They play a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, accordion, mandolin, ukulele and drums. The cost is just $15 per head at the door. Morning tea will be provided free.
Bryson Place. chet section, Jessica Thompson from Brisbane, has participated almost every year. The award winning crochet artist is looking forward to coming back up to Warwick to install her “geometree” artwork on to the same tree she decorates every year. Jessica has a 15-minute ferry ride to work every day and uses that time to work on the small elements for her tree jumper. “Every minute counts,” Jessica said, “My entry this year has lots of small elements that I have finally finished and I am now in the construction stages. This is the most challenging part as what looks awesome in my head doesn’t work in reality when you are creating something for a tree. There is a lot of transition involved from thought to reality when making a tree jumper.” All tree jumper artists are congratulated and celebrated at the official festival launch party on Thursday 21 July, in the Warwick Town Hall. This event will include entertainment by the powerful, soulful sounds of Brisbane swing band Dezzie D and the Stingrays. Warwick Art Gallery sponsors three $500 prizes for tree jumper excellence that will be presented by the 2016 official judge Kerryanne Farrer. A Culture Champion, Kerryanne, throughout her career in the creative industries spanning 30 years, has always been passionate about producing and facilitating contemporary arts and cultural experiences and enterprises. Currently in the pilot seat, as executive director of the Flying Arts Alliance, Kerryanne combines her dedication to access for regional Queenslanders together with her working knowledge of the

The tree jumper exhibition begins Thursday 21 July. The artworks remain on the trees until 4pm on Sunday 31 July, the last day of the festival. Tickets to the Launch Party are $25 and can be purchased online at www.warwicktickets. com or in person at Warwick Art Gallery. ANTICIPATION for dressing day - for Warwick’s trees to get their winter coats installed - has reached fever pitch. This is a day that the whole community looks forward to when 110 of the leafless trees in the CBD are transformed with wonderful and wacky artworks for the 10-day Jumpers and Jazz in July festival. This is no quick yarn bombing activity but rather a carefully measured and planned labour of love that involves hundreds of creative people and many months of organisation. Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine and her team started planning for the 2016 festival eight months ago when the optional tree jumper theme was decided. “Our tree jumper artists like to know the theme early as they begin designing their tree jumpers a long time in advance,” Karina said. “We make sure we choose a theme that has several layers and can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. “The theme this year is Bohemain and, although the artists keep their ideas mostly a secret, we know that we are going to have some truly spectacular tree jumpers in this year’s competition.” The exhibition attracts entries from professional artists alongside groups and individuals who have a love of yarn arts and enjoy being part of this unique community event. The Diggers Garden Group will participate for the third time this year decorating a tree located outside the Blue Bird Kitchen and Bar. The “tree jumper” sub-committee is co-ordinated by Joy Softley, Gemma Condon and Pamela Hart, who started collaborating on ideas way back in December. “We have regular gatherings to work on our entry which is inspired by gardens, gardening and the theme Bohemian,” Pamela said. “Our tree will feature colourful fruit made from beautiful wool donated to the group by a member from Toowoomba. “We love working on our tree and our members from Tenterfield, Warwick and Stanthorpe all join in to help - one of our members from Bolivia in NSW has knitted over 60 pieces of fruit.” One of the absolute highlights of this year’s tree jumper exhibition will be the collaborative artworks co-ordinated by free form knitting and crochet guru Prudence Mapstone. In February, Prudence put a call out to her colleagues and fans all over the world to join in with her to make a Bohemian-themed tree jumper using a unique technique called “scrumbling". The response has been incredible and the little scrumbled pieces have been mailed to Prudence’s home in Brisbane from all over the world including France, Spain, Libya, Alaska, Croatia, Japan, Belgium, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands. YANGAN
GOOD GRAZING AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS APPROXIMATELY 20 kilometres east of Warwick in the area known as Yangan, this 40 acre property has a lot to offer. It is a great little grazing property and is very well fenced into seven paddocks, all with water. It includes a four-bay 12m x 6m steel shed, and one of the bays is concreted and lockable. There are good steel cattle yards and a loading ramp, a new bore which produces 3000 gallons
per hour and excellent soft scrub soils. The two-bedroom timber home has been fully renovated a couple of years ago and features two air conditioners and a large deck overlooking the valley. The home is located on a hill to take in the excellent views of the valley and to the mountains. The selling agent says it is hard to find good quality small properties like this one.

★★★★★★★ STARSCOPE ARIES—March 21-April 20 Approach romantic situations with renewed optimism. Colleagues are at a lost for words - which proves a very welcome relief. On the homefront, responsibilites increase. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 Partnership activities are accented through the week. Communications are positively spotlighted. Correspondence carries more importance than usual. An absent minded streak surfaces on the weekend. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Spontaneity is the key to a successful week. Financial gains are spotlighted after the weekend, but keep the good news to yourself. This is a good time to review your family’s health needs. CANCER—June 22-July 22 The week’s theme is variety. With your partner, enjoy a mixture of elegant dining and potluck dinners. Spend time with your younger and older relatives. Aquire luxury purchases and bargain-basement items. LEO—July 23-August 22 It’s time to celebrate as financial responsibilities begin to diminish. This week should be romantically upbeat. There are some career disappointments, but they are strictly temporary. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 The focus is on property dealings and don’t hesitate to request a second opinion from trusted relatives. In relationships, you start to believe that opposites really do attract. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Weekdays offer times for relaxation and socializing. Relatives need your encouragement throughout the weekend and romance becomes more complex by Thursday. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 This could be a somewhat lucky period for romance, but in finance it takes hard work to make any strides. Decorating and bargain hunting are emphasized through the weekend. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Friendship and sharing are the twin themes. Travel plans may be overly ambitious through the weekend. Socially you are in demand, but a loved one may feel upstaged. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20
Buzz at moving launch Casey’s tips
THE Vijayadev Yogendra Auditorium at the School of Total Education was buzzing for the launch of the Southern Downs Refugee and Migrant Network during Refugee Week last week. The recently formed group was officially launched with a movie night after rain put paid to a multicultural picnic the previous weekend. The event featured Freedom Stories, a documentary based project featuring people who sought asylum in Australia at a time of great political turmoil around 2001 but who had long since dropped out of the media spotlight. The SDRAMN has an interest in the wellbeing of refugees and migrants. Based on the Southern Downs in Queensland, it is currently developing a schedule of activities and events, supported by working parties for advocacy, welcome, settlement and community engagement. It is seeking like-minded members to join and support its goals, objectives and values. SDRAMN has a home base at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Warwick,
which has offered its Resource Room for meetings and for Open Room events. Contact SDRAMN at sd.refugeemigrantnetwork@gmail. com and follow members on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ sdrefugeemigrantnetwork.

Enjoying a cuppa before the movie was Jenny Eldridge, Robert and Jacinta Fromm and Emma Yates.
Speak up this week if you experience any injustices. You cannot afford to play the martyr. Land deals and travel of any kind at this time could be more favourable. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 This week highlights advancement at the work place. If planning a trip, you may be changing your destination at the last moment. Romantic commitments are renewed through the week. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Bright ideas earn you praise at home or at the work place and may lead to financial benefits in the near future. Ailing relatives appreciate your concern and your encouragement. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Whatever you tackle, you do so with intensity. Passion, mystery, ambiguity, a quiet determination - all these are your trademarks. Imagination is a quality worth developing over the next six months.

Premiers hit the bullseye PREMIER Darts hosted the Intercities tournament at St Mary’s Hall, Warwick, at the weekend and has successfully moved through to the event’s finals. There were 10 teams attending from all over south-east Queensland. Despite the cold weather, some great darts matches were displayed. The Premier men’s team played very well, winning six out of eight games to finish as runner-up behind the Toowoomba team. Ioane Coolwell managed to score a 180 as well. Because of this the team will advance to the Intercities finals in September. The Premier ladies’
team also excelled, winning seven out of nine games which means that it will also progress to the Intercities finals. Organisers have extended a big thanks to all the volunteers who helped out over the weekend. Also in the Thursday competition, the Young Ones gave KFC a whitewash, winning 9-0, Kyle Broderick being best player with four pegs five tons. Just Us continues its unbeaten run, beating Don’t Know by 6-3, Warren Young being best player with five pegs and eight tons. WIMBLEDON is off and running. It won’t be hard to spot tennis tragics by the end of the tournament - they will be the people with matchsticks propping up their eyelids. In the opening rounds there have not been any major upsets with all of the top players comfortably through to their next round. As this goes to print, Bernard Tomic faces a sudden-death decider against Verdancy after play was suspended due to rain. The match is in the balance at two sets all. His partner in crime Nick Kyrgios manoeuvred his way safely to the next round with a four set win and, surprise, surprise, a code violation. The Brits will be looking for some joy from Andy Murray after the Brexit result and their loss to Iceland in the Euros. Their clean sweep series win in the antipodes against the Wallabies must just be too far out of reach to give them any heart at this point in time. It was a win, however, that has rugby fans in Australia reeling. The honeymoon between Australian rugby fans and Michael Chieka’s appears to be over while Chieka is keen to divorce the “spider cam” after an incident where a ball hit the offending spider web (wire) and the result went against the Wallabies. Speaking of honeymoons - the honeymoon, marriage and love affair between Parramatta, the NRL and even some fans and try scoring demon Semi Rradradra seems to be in tatters depending on who you listen to. Then, of course, there is the very obvious breakdown in the relationship between Foran and the Eels. They have run out of patience with the playmaker and have stripped their big name signing of the captaincy. And, of course, there is the turmoil right across NSW as Blue turns on Blue in a bid to apportion blame for another series loss to the Mighty Maroons. Can’t wait to see what will implode if it is a Maroon win after game three. It’s all just such fun. - Casey O'Connor NRL ROUND 17 IS it just me or is the 2016 tipping season just getting tougher each week? Round 17 certainly is no walk in the park for tipsters starting with the Roosters and Dogs on Thursday night. Leaning towards the Dogs despite an improved Roosters performance at their last outing. The Broncos host Melbourne Storm in what will be a really tough game. My heart says the Broncos but my head is saying the Storm. The Titans travel across the ditch to take on the Warriors and I think a win in NZ for them is unlikely but they are travelling well and it would not be a complete surprise. The Panthers to upset the Tigers at home and the Sharks to continue on their winning way with more drama (if that’s possible) in the Eels murky pond. The Raiders will prove too strong for the improving Knights in what is sure to be icy conditions at GIO stadium. The Cowboys and Rabbitohs travel to Barlow Park Cairns for this clash and it is hard to see the Bunnies coming away with a win. On Monday night the Sea Eagles and Dragons go head-to-head at Brooky and with DCE and their captain back in business, the Eagles looked much better last week but I think the Dragons will pop up here. All I can say is good luck - I am almost ready to resort to a pin.
1966 Bulimba – the 1966 Toowoomba Bulimba Cup side got together for a “now” team photo at the recent reunion. PLAYING THE BACK NINE SPORTERS ventured on to the back nine on Sunday. Jim Mitchell got the best out of the very crisp conditions and came away with a win ahead of runner up Mark Lynam. Paul Armstrong, who is currently playing very consistent golf, had the best gross. Peter Goodsir and Bob Watts took the run-downs. Chris McEvoy claimed the pin shot at the 12th while the Pro Pin went begging. David St John took home one of the meat trays while the second went to Evans Head visitor Fran Dickens. Sporters will be out and about next Sunday at the tee off time between 8am and 8.30am and if nothing else it’s sure to be a little frosty. TIGHT FINISH AT ‘GARRA MEMBERS played a two ball Ambrose at Wallangarra last Saturday. In a tight finish Steven Hampstead and Brendan McMillan edged out Kevin Williams and Jamie Purcell to take the trophy. Finishing in third place was the team of Gary Sutcliffe and Andrew Thompson. The event, which is sponsored by Wallangarra Store, attracted a good turnout and some handy golfers. G. Morris was the only player to claim a pin shot and that was on hole nine. We can only assume some stocktaking was going on. Another month has dashed by and this this week another Monthly Medal will be up for grabs. A reminder that the annual Breast Cancer Charity Day has been scheduled for July 24 - cost is $25pp and includes lunch. A two ball Ambrose for a player and partner will be played and tee off will be between 9am and 9.30am. Contact the club for further information about this popular charity day. CONDITIONS NO DETERRENT CONDITIONS could not have been less appealing last week so it was a pleasant surprise for organisers to see how keen the group who play golf croquet have become. Showers off and an on through the early part of the morning did not affect play too much - it was cold but fun in a perverse way. Doubles were played before the morning tea
Jockey Isabella The parades her mount before the second race – she won the first race at the inaugural Arab meeting on Amir Sir Kalih. break with the last first game we played doubles, with two members of the last team to hit off playing two balls each. John Castles and Judy Lock played for the first time and although they clicked as a partnership they could not match the experience of Dianne Wren and Teresa Payne. The final score 13-7. Di Wren was in great form scoring nine of her team’s 13 hoops. Bill Golding and Liz Ellway had a narrow win 7-6 over Val Fancourt and Marion Castles. Bill Golding top scored in this game with five hoops. Elaine Brown and Bev Sullivan, playing two balls each, at end of time finished with an 8 all draw. Elaine scored a hoop in one. Following the break the weather deteriorated and there were fewer players who ventured out for the second game. John Castles deserves special mention he took on the conditions and opposition and top scored
with nine hoops while Marian Castles nailed a hoop in one. HISTORY MAKING MEET AT CLIFTON IN an Australian first, last weekend The Clifton Jockey club hosted Australia’s inaugural standalone Arabian horse race meeting. The event was a combination of colour and excitement with impressive horses, a market day, a Middle Eastern theme and some serious gallopers. Jockey Isabella can add winner of the first Arabian race to her resume after Amir Sir Real Kalih (tell me that is not a race callers nightmare) led all the way in the opening event of the five race card. The four year has previously had success in the show ring but showed on Saturday he has a big future in racing.

Local Sport COWBOYS DRAW THE Warwick Cowboys sit on 20 points on the TRL ladder, just two points in arrears of leaders Pittsworth after playing a 22 all draw in their game against Valleys at Herb Steinhort Oval on Saturday night. Valleys, who have had a disappointing season, stepped things up a notch on Saturday and surprised the inform Cowboys. While the Roosters played out of their skins the Cowboys were left to rue what might have been after a series of handling errors and a poor completion rate in the second half allowed Valleys back into the game. Warwick trailed 14-12 at half time and late in the second half had turned it around to lead 22-20 before its opponents nailed a penalty to level the scores. Despite opportunities for both sides, neither team was able to break the deadlock and with a 22 all draw shared the points. Cowboys coach Craig Mullaly said his team had to be better to mix it with the top sides. Mullaly pointed to Brock Croft, Ryan McIvor and Joe Fuimaono as the Cowboys’ best in the game. Cowboys fans will hoping for a stronger performance this weekend when the Cowboys take on Oakey at Fr Ranger Oval on Saturday night. In other games, Valleys defeated Warwick 4919 in Reserve Grade; Under 18 Valleys defeated Warwick 34-30 and also won the second division game 32-24. Warwick 22 (Joe Fuimaono 2, Ty Gardner, Craig Donn tries Mick Bloomfield 3 goals) - Valleys 22 (Dylan Chown, Tyren Nicholls, Hnaloan Budden, Dexter Buchanan tries Trent Nicholls 2 Tyren Nicholls 1 goals). COOL COMPS COOL pistol competitions were held on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning at Inglewood. Cool being the operative word. In Saturday’s event Tom Donald found the conditions to his liking and grabbed a win over Lynne Shepherd with Wal Shepherd finishing in third spot on the standings. On Sunday Jason Lewis outgunned Iain Bowen and Wal Shepherd again finished in third spot. The Inglewood Sporting Shooters have scheduled a clay target competition for Sunday. The pistol and Benchrest ranges will also be open for practice. A reminder that the AGM is scheduled for Sunday 24 July. NEW DATE FOR MARYVALE THE annual Fathers and Sons Cricket Match between the visiting Lew Cooper XI and Maryvale Cricket Club has found a new date after the June game was washed out. The game has been rescheduled for 9 July with Lew Cooper rallying his troops and looking for a win at the MCG (Maryvale Cricket Ground). Cooper’s team is sure to arrive with some notable former and emerging players. A dinner at the H & J will be held following the game. FATHER AND SON WIN THE father and son combination of Wes and Hayden Smith showed they are multi skilled building on previous performances to take out the Four Ball Medley Stableford in Stanthorpe. Their score of 51 points saw them run away with the trophies donated by club stalwart Bob Watts. Farmers were the runners up - one by name the other by trade. Jason Lawer and Richard Reardon finished with creditable points. Taking the pin shots were Jason Lawer (3/12) Hayden Smith (17) and Nikki Rossow (ladies 17). Dylan Barraclough claimed pro pins at 1/10th

and 9/18th and Matt Waterworth at 5/14th. Waterworth also took the birdies’ nest. Rundowns went to Bob Watts, Richard Reardon, Trev and Lyn Ludlow, Reno Piovesan Fred Wharton, Tom Page and K Jones. This week a single stroke event and putting for the July monthly medal is on the program. The day will be sponsored by Mick O’Brien in conjunction with the Dale Mullins memorial trophy sponsored by Michael Thompson. Congratulations to Madeleine Jarmen for winning division two sand green championship at Texas 2016. WATTLES UNDER HAWK ATTACK GATTON scored a very convincing win over Wattles at Cahill Park as the Hawks forwards dominated. Wattles trailed 12-2 at the break after a very competitive first half but the Hawks returned to the paddock and went on the attack. The home side racked up 30 unanswered points with Dennis Burgoyne scoring a double off the bench. The news did not get any better for Wattles in the minor grades with Gatton making it a clean sweep with wins in Reserve Grade (54-10) and Under 18s (42-38). This task does not get any easier for Wattles this weekend when they travel to Highfields Gatton 42 (Dennis Burgoyne 2, Alex Groves, Dominic Haak, Allan Morris, Michael Frohloff, Robbie Fletcher, Cliff Brown, tries Callum Woolacott 7 goals) d Wattles 2 (Jason Wilmot goal). Reserve Grade: Gatton 54 d Wattles 10. Under 18: Gatton 42 d Wattles 38. KILLARNEY CUP MEETING ABANONDED THE annual Killarney Cup meeting scheduled for Allman Park last Saturday was abandoned due to the state of the track. Following overnight rain on Friday, Racing Queensland stewards inspected the track and deemed it unsuitable for racing. Unfortunately the policy position of Racing Queensland is not to reschedule abandoned non TAB meetings.
CYCLISTS OUT IN FORCE THE Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) Queensland’s premier road racing series is heading to Warwick and surrounds this weekend for round two of the series. Twenty six teams of the leading riders in the state compete over four rounds throughout southern Queensland in the series. It is designed to offer riders and teams the opportunity to test their skills during a range of individual and team time trials, road races and criteriums and ensures a range of development and competition opportunities for riders. The 2016 series has been expanded to include a women’s section. On Saturday the road race will see riders cover a course from Warwick towards Killarney, northeast to Tannymorel and then back to Warwick via Yangan. On Sunday the action turns to Leslie Park which will be the headquarters for out and back time trials. The course will take riders along the back road to Allora - cyclists leaving at four minute intervals - the men’s distance 20klm - the women 12klm finishing in Guy Street. Round two will wrap up with what promises to be a spectacular event the one hour criterium through the CBD of Warwick with riders expected to clock speeds of up to 50km/h Joining the riders in this stage of the series is the professional team - the Kenyan Team Down which recently competed in Victoria. The team currently based at the Gold Coast has six Kenyan, four Australian and three New Zealand cyclists who are young, extremely talented and hungry for success. The members of the squad competing in Warwick includes Kenyan pair Ayub Gathurima Kinoti and Samuel Ekiru and New Zealand riders Morgan Smith and Nicholas Miller.
The eventual winner of race two at Clitfon looked a treat in the mounting yard.
TENTERFIELD CLAIM SILVERWARE THE Tenterfield Tigers have the President’s Cup safely in their trophy cabinet after their win over the Inglewood Roosters on Saturday. It was a hard fought win and the 52-24 score line is probably not a reflection of the game. Despite the freezing conditions there were still plenty of passionate fans on hand supporting both
sides. The Roosters were right in the mix at half time with the scores 18-14 in favour of the Tigers. In the second half, on the back of some solid defence, the Tigers ran way with a convincing win over their closest rivals this season. The win takes the Tigers to the top of the BRL ladder. With Wallangarra Ramettes short on numbers the scheduled Ladies League tag game became a training run with some of the Tigerettes throwing on an opposition jersey. The Tigers will go into their game against Stanthorpe Texas confident of extending their lead on the ladder. The game will be played in Texas on Sunday with both men’s and ladies’ games. In the other BRL game played last weekend, the Killarney Cutters showed great improvement to notch up a 32-26 win over the Wallangarra Rams. The Cutters will take plenty from that game as they head to Inglewood this weekend to play the Roosters in what will be a tougher assignment.
WARWICK BOWLS MEN’S SECTION: Last Wednesday 22 June Valentine’s and Christensen’s Cash Bowls afternoon was held. first round winner - Tannymorel; second round winner - Clifton; third round winner - P. Collis’s team - Warwick Club. No further information has been made available for print. The cards had team numbers only, no names, which would have been a waste of time to print. Thank you to the Warwick R.S.L. for their very generous sponsorship, and to the Warwick Work Camp ladies for their wonderful work in the kitchen assisting the club’s lady members. Also thank you to provider Judith and her helpers in the bar, the umpire George Lynam, and our members for the preparation of a great Green. Coming events for June: Every Monday at 9.30am maintenance of the Green and surrounds will take place. The help from members has been excellent. Wednesday 29: Extra Jackpot Pairs - results next week. Saturday 2 July: Self Selected Triples and social bowls. LADIES’ SECTION: The next monthly general meeting will be held on 8 July at 10am. The Quarterly Birthday Luncheon will follow this meeting, and will be held at the Belle Vue Cafe. The number of members attending is required for booking. If attending, ring Trish on 4667 0990.

Regular skips ensure you have a full team available and notify the club early of any problems. Southern Cross bowls With the icy weather playing havoc with our bowls commitments last weekend, the club decided to postpone the Frank O’Mara Memorial Day to this coming weekend 2 July. Play will be from 1pm to 4pm followed by hot nibblies. All are welcome to come along and join us in making this a special afternoon. Note the earlier starting time of play, so could all names be in by noon. Some of our bowlers did brave the cold weather to compete in all our competitions over the weekend.
