Libs lead in Corangamite By LUKE VOOGT Corangamite is poised for another close election result, with MP Sarah Henderson holding a small lead in the polls before tomorrow’s election. A Newspoll from 13 to 15 June had Ms Henderson leading ALP candidate Libby Coker 51 to 49. But the latest Galaxy poll from 20 to 22 June recorded a wider margin, with Ms Henderson on 53 and Ms Coker on 47. Ms Coker told the Indy she still had a good chance of becoming Corangamite’s next federal MP despite the polls. “The only poll that counts is on the day,” she said. “I knew it would be a tough battle but Labor’s

policies that support people make it competitive in Corangamite.” Ms Coker said Labor’s support for Medicare and penalty rates, investing in education and renewable energy stance gave the party a chance to win the election. Ms Henderson said she would take nothing for granted in her marginal seat. “In Corangamite every single vote will count.” Ms Henderson said she was proud to support jobs growth with “crucial tax incentives for small business” as well as new federal government offices for Geelong. “I’m asking Corangamite electors to stick to our strong economic plan for jobs, families and small business.” The bookies were firmly behind Ms Hender-

son on Thursday with Sportbet putting her at $1.05 to win and Ms Coker at $8.50. Other major betting agencies offered between $1.02 and $1.20 for Ms Henderson, and $4 to $9 for Ms Coker. Both parties have pumped millions of dollars in election promises into Corangamite, with the neighbouring safe Labor of Corio seat again mostly overlooked. The Liberals have made 23 election pledges worth $52.5 million for Corangamite and pledged $10m for Corio as a half share of a $20m jobs package shared with Corangamite. The ALP made 19 election commitments for Corangamite totalling $57.7m and $28.1m in pledges for Corio.

Dedicated Waurn Ponds residents have worked tirelessly to ensure their century-old memorial remains unforgotten. Jack Harriott and a local committee recently finished a new fence around the memorial reserve which is off Waurn Ponds Drive. “It’s very much a local treasure,” Jack said. “It’s just got to stay so no one can sell it and by building the fence I think we’ve achieved that.” Geelong’s bypass has turned Waurn Ponds Drive into a road to nowhere, so few drivers encounter the reserve. Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve committee of management received $4000 and $2000 grants from City Hall and Bendigo Bank respectively which funded four days of work replacing the previous dilapidated wire fence. By LUKE VOOGT A former Geelong councillor has donated an allowance overpayment to charity in protest at the council’s sacking. Kylie Fisher gave the $1300 to Corio’s The Listening Lounge despite City Hall demanding repayment. “I feel like this is the right the thing to do and like it’s my last gesture as someone who represented the community,” she said. The councillors were paid one month in advance, so their sacking in mid-April left them two weeks overpaid. Ms Fisher said the donation was her protest at the community “losing its voice”. “They never had a choice in the whole process and many feel wronged by the decision, which was made by the State Government.” “This means (the overpayment) goes directly to the community of northern suburbs that I was representing,” Ms Fisher said she emailed City Hall asking to donate the money but was told she had to pay it back. She asked to see “relevant legislation” stipulating she had to pay the money back but was “yet to receive a response”, Ms Fisher said. Ms Fisher, who works in disability support, said she took out a personal loan to make the donation because she had already spent the April allowance. “I’m a single parent and the allowance (was) my wage. Once that hits my bank account it’s gone.” The Listening Lounge was essential to local mental health and wellbeing, she said. “It’s run by volunteers and they don’t receive state or federal funding. That’s why I’ve chosen to support it.” City Hall chief Kelvin Spiller declined to comment, saying the issue was confidential. Listening Lounge volunteer Betty Strauch called Ms Fisher’s donation “very generous”.

The battle for parking spaces can test civility at the best of times but throw in career aspirations and the mix becomes positively volatile. These ingredients flared earlier in the week at a local federal pre-polling station where a campaign team had commandeered the prime park outside for days on end. Opponents grew frustrated at the extensivelysignwritten vehicle commanding the best site for spruiking to arriving voters, so a minorparty candidate turned up early the next day to seize the advantage. Upon discovering the cheeky interloper, the park-hog complained to electoral commission staff who then told the candidate to vacate the parking space. This led to the candidate complaining further up the electoral commission chain, which confirmed that pre-polling site staff had no jurisdiction over car parks.

Keeping carp has cost an Ocean Grove man $1745 in court. A Geelong magistrate found the 51-yearold guilty of possessing koi carp, which has been declared to be a noxious aquatic species. Fisheries Victoria’s Paul Millar said the man was fined $600 for possession, $1000 for failing to provide supplier details to Fisheries Victoria and $145 in court costs. Fisheries officers searched a property in October 2015, finding a large makeshift pond containing 19 live koi carp. “A number of polystyrene boxes marked ‘live fish’ were also located, with one box clearly displaying international flight details originating out of Bangkok,” Mr Millar said. common carp but it has been ruled as noxious in Victoria for its impact on the environment, he said. “Common carp are extremely destructive and have contributed to the degradation of numerous Victorian waterways since being introduced. “They can spread and populate to areas quickly. They out-compete native fish and destroy natural habitat.” Mr Millar said the fish looked beautiful but posed a significant threat to Victorian waterways. Possessing any declared noxious aquatic species in Victoria without a permit was illegal, he warned. Mr Miller urged anyone who saw or suspected illegal fishing activity to phone the 24hour reporting line 13 FISH (13 3474).

Geelong’s floating Christmas tree has earned a three-year lifeline. Council administrators have committed $400,000 a year to keep it shining until 2018 after an independent review said the tree was worth millions of dollars a year to the city’s economy. One of the last acts of Geelong’s sacked council was to vote in favour of keeping the tree for at least three more years but interim administrator Yehudi Blacher guaranteed only one pending the review. He ordered the assessment amid calls to dump the tree amid rising costs and doubts about its financial worth to Geelong. But Mr Blacher’s three permanent replacements this week revealed that the report confirmed the tree had “significant economic benefits to the region”. “The Christmas tree provides a cost-benefit return of 5.4 times in Geelong,” chief administrator Dr Kathy Alexander said. “So for every dollar invested, we get an economic return of $5.40. “In 2015, Geelong’s Christmas program attracted 213,000 visits with an estimated total economic output of $15.6M for Geelong. “Central Geelong traders also benefit from the city’s annual Christmas program, reporting a bumper Christmas trading period in 2015. “The overall Christmas program, including the Geelong floating Christmas tree, street decorations, children’s activities, and festive lighting lifts our community’s spirit and increases visitor numbers. “The city is committed to continuing to work closely with the community to consult and collaborate on major projects, such as our annual

Koala ‘parade’ to lure tourists From page 1 Ms Duffy said Lara’s shared Phillip Island’s tourism advantage of proximity to Melbourne. “There are penguins all over north Tasmania but people don’t go to see them. Lara is only a 45-minute drive from Melbourne.” But Lara’s declining koala population was an obstacle to developing the proposed tourism attraction, Ms Duffy said. “The You Yangs isn’t large enough to support an increasing population or even a stable one. The You Yangs have about 100 koalas, which breed 10 joeys a year.” Drought, decreased habitat and roads were holding back Lara’s koala population, Ms Duffy said. “I suspect we’re killing more on the road than are breeding. I’ve seen three dead koalas on the road already this year.” The only way to prevent more deaths was to control development near the You Yangs, Ms Duffy said. “This area has got to stay quiet - people have got this idea that you can build right up to edge of a national park and everything will be fine. Housing only provides income for a little while but tourism provides income for the future.” Ms Duffy identified Hovels Creek, Little River and Sandy Creek as priorities for more trees. Mr Giddings welcomed the prospect of an international tourism drawcard close to the airport, which last week secured a bipartisan pre-election commitment to clear the way for overseas flights. “Our big leverage is with inbound tourism,” he said. “This area is a bit of a no-brainer for us, having ecotourism right on our doorstep.”

Housemates’ puppy love

Police arrest pair over ‘theft series’

Police have arrested two men over a series of thefts stretching from the Bellarine Peninsula to Colac. The incidents included the alleged theft of a spa and a boat on a trailer from Indented Head, which was reported in the 17 June Geelong Indy. Police arrested the pair after executing a search warrant in an industrial area at Drysdale on 24 June. Geelong Criminal Investigation Unit and Bellarine police led the search which uncovered various allegedly stolen items. Items recovered included property which was allegedly stolen recently from several areas across the division, police posted on Facebook this week. “These included a caravan stolen from Colac, a spa pool from Indented Head, a boat and trailer stolen from Indented Head (and) numerous sets of stolen number plates,” police posted. Police arrested and charge a Clifton Springs man in his mid-30s and a 45-year-old man from Portarlington. “Police would like to thank the community for their support and information in regards to this matter.”

Leopold housemates Phoebe Wilkens and Donna Lindsay recently welcomed the newest member of their household - Hunter the seeing-eye puppy. “Now we’ve got a new housemate,” Phoebe said. “He’s the new ruler of the house, I think.” Both adore four-month-old Hunter who has followed them to work, parties and restaurants for the past two months. Donna described him as a playful, hyperactive and mischievous puppy whose favourite past time is chasing seagulls and kids. She said Seeing Eye Dog Australia (SEDA) encouraged carers to take their puppies to work and social situations to prepare them for life as seeing-eye dogs. “We’ve got to do certain things with him but it’s not as full-on as people think,” she said. “We’ve just got to take him everywhere.” Under the SEDA Puppy Carer program, volunteers care for eight-week-old puppies until a year old. SEDA covers all the puppy’s expenses. “Everyone loves a puppy but knowing what he’ll grow up to be - that’s probably the best part,” Donna said. “And you don’t even have to pay for anything.” The pair will miss Hunter, their first guide dog puppy, when he leaves for training. “Everyone’s asked how we’re going to give him up,” Donna said. “I think we’re in denial - we haven’t looked that far ahead.” “We might have to get another puppy,” Phoebe added. SEDA program co-ordinator Wendy Lake said the charity is searching for puppy carers in Geelong, which are essential to its breeding program. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to get involved without having to contribute financially.” SEDA will hold an information session on puppy caring at Vision Australia in Belmont on 21 July. Barwon Water prices have fallen again for a consecutive year, the authority has announced. The decrease was in line with a five-year plan covering pricing, services and other activities, Barwon Water said. The plan delivered price cuts in 2013 and 2014, although CPI adjustments left consumers paying slightly more. But reduced inflation in 2015 and 2016 had delivered lower prices for both years, Barwon Water said. “For an average residential customer using 160 kilolitres of water a year, this translates into a decrease of around $3.38 a year,” chairman Jo Plummer said. “To be able to offer some relief from cost of living increases is something of which Barwon Water is proud.”

$12.6m ‘gap’ for sports upgrades Two sports grounds won funding lifelines in City Hall’s finalised budget this week but a third missed out as administrators expressed concern at a $12.6 million “funding gap” for sport facilities. The three administrators made budget variations to allow a $35,000 master plan for St Joseph’s Drew Reserve and to “consider” a $430,000 change-room upgrade at Queen’s Park. But Grovedale Football Club lost its bid for a variation to fund visitors’ and women’s rooms at Burdoo Reserve. “After inspecting Drew Reserve, we decided we needed to consider this site’s development strategically, to ensure its facilities were improved in a sustainable way while addressing all safety and security issues,” said chairwoman of administrators Dr Kathy Alexander. “We’ve also decided to further consider allocating $430,000 for a change-room upgrade at Queen’s Park, which the G21 AFL strategy has identified as being some of the worst in our region. “That funding will depend on further work yet to be done between club representatives and City officers.” Dr Alexander encouraged promoters of community projects that missed out on funding in 2016/2017 to continue working with the City

over the next 12 months. “As I highlighted at the submissions hearing, we had about $8.5 million available to allocate toward $27 million of proposals,” she said. “Despite each project’s merits, the City can’t afford to fund every submission, so we had to prioritise.” Dr Alexander said the administrators were concerned about the $12.6 million gap for asset renewal and maintenance after observing funding issues confronting many of the region’s sport and recreational clubs. “That renewal gap is predicted to grow to around $25 million annually over the next 20 years, based on our current expenditure and renewal levels. “As administrators we’re committed to addressing the challenge of funding the gap, so we’ve asked City officers to develop a social infrastructure plan that includes recreation and sporting facility projects. “A strategic approach to decision-making about community infrastructure and facilities will help ensure we make the best use of available resources. “It’s crucial that community-owned assets offer safe and cost-effective services to as large a section of the community as possible, including our sporting and recreation clubs.”

Police have urged Geelong residents to continue dobbing in drug dealers as a part of a two-week campaign ending Tuesday. Crime Stoppers launched the Dob in a Dealer campaign on 21 June, seeking tips about neighbourhood drug-dealing activity. $80m, 11-storey office approved An 11-storey building worth $80 million is set to tower over neighbouring properties in Geelong’s Brougham Street. The office building, between Mercer and Gheringhap streets, would accommodate 850 workers, Planning Minister Richard Wynne said. The office is the first project Mr Wynne has announced since the State Government made him responsible for major building projects in central Geelong almost a year ago. The announcement follows recent criticism of the government’s Geelong Authority, which the government set up to advise Mr Wynne on which projects to approve. State and federal Liberal MPs have accused the authority of failing to deliver any projects since its inception. But State Government said the Geelong Authority “supported” the approval of the new Brougham Street building, along with various

other government agencies. “The Office of the Victorian Government Architect reviewed the Brougham Street proposal, indicating it would set an encouraging precedent for renewal in central Geelong through its use of the existing wool store,” the government said. “The approval was supported by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the City of Greater Geelong, the Geelong Authority and Places Victoria.” The government announced the new building amid new calls to disband the Geelong Authority. The Geelong Indy reports today that Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has labelled the authority “powerless”, while state counterpart Simon Ramsay has suggested it’s useless. Mr Ramsay has asked Mr Wynne about the authority’s lack of action on Geelong’s proposed convention and exhibition centre, widely considered a top priority for the city. “I do not see any use now for the Geelong planning authority and I ask the minister to investigate whether it serves any useful purpose at all,” he said. “This action is necessary because we now have administrators administering the city and also administering a number of the major projects that have been proposed by different stakeholder groups, not to mention we have lost the chair of that authority and many of the major projects that were being proposed by the planning authority, like Vision 2, are actually being done by the administrators.” Melbourne's Grocon will construct the building above a former woolstores on the corner of Gheringhap St. The building could potentially become headquarters for the National Disability Insurance Agency, which has competing offers from other builders.

I have spoken against the State Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposed firefightersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; enterprise bargaining agreement in Parliament and the media after hearing incredible criticism from CFA volunteers and supporters. However, one of the most compelling signs of how the EBA will fail regional Victorians was an admission by Wye River CFA captain Roy Moriarty. My father was a communications officer for the Birregurra CFA rural fire brigade, my uncle was a second lieutenant for the Wingeel brigade and I have volunteered for the Birregurra brigade but it was Mr Moriarty on the ABCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 7.30 program who brought some clarity to the divide between volunteers and the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alliance with the United Firefighters Union. Mr Moriarty admitted he had voted Labor all his life but his vote had been changed by the way the Government and UFU had treated volunteers in the EBA process. For me, that was the most compelling evidence that this agreement is flawed and wrong. This confirmation came not from Jack Rush QC, the resignations of Jane Garrett and the CFA board, or Andrew Ford, the CEO of the volunteer firefighters, each of whom had the guts to stand up and say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;this EBA is not good for our volunteersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. It came from Roy Moriarty who could no longer vote Labor because of what the Andrews government was trying to do to our volunteers. All Victorian voters have a choice to make at this election and Bill Shorten has created enemies in regional Victoria. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

No one should fall for this. We all can see that Coles and Woolworths, the power companies, the four big banks, BHP et cetera donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t act this way and are committed to using any extra in their own interests. Labor, on the other hand, has a quite different

Bastardisation of marriage The standout issue in this election is not the coalitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s jobs and innovation nor any of Laborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nefarious imaginings about issues like Medicare. Rather itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the upholding and strengthening of marriage. Both major parties have been disingenuous by not placing this vital issue before the public. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a clear choice between upholding family life as we know it or replacing marriage with a bastardised, nebulous concept like â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;marriage equalityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. We have seen intolerance in the Australian media toward supporters of traditional marriage. This illustrates why redefining marriage has significant ramifications for our freedoms and democracy. If marriage equality gets up it could well open Pandoraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s box. Changing the definition of marriage might seem innocent but could have severe detrimental and far-reaching negative consequences. Marriage is not primarily about love but procreation and companionship. The meaning of

Regulation viewing on Brexit The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Brexitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of the UK from the EU is not a bad thing at all. Hysteria has reigned since the exit vote but this was only to be expected because the forces that control the EU have inordinate representation in the media. The facts are that the EU strangled rather than stimulated economic activity through over-regulation and other market manipulations, severely affecting the economic prospects of many member nations. When dozens of regulations are placed on something as simple as a toothbrush or a pillowcase then something is seriously wrong. All of this is explained thoroughly in YouTube documentary Brexit: The Movie, which is interesting viewing. Of great interest in this film is the claim that Switzerland, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s richest country, has virtually no regulation and thus no major impedi-

ments banging up its economic show. The trouble with regulations is that they flourish wildly and often become increasingly more bizarre and unworkable. The propaganda show is in full swing about Brexit but if other countries are considering such a move also then there must be some considerable merit to the movement, especially in countries experiencing economic strangulation via the EUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ghastly economic policies. Vote with God on Israel In 2015 the UN issued 23 sanctions. One went to Bashar Assad for his responsibility in the deaths of 200,000 of his own people in Syria. One went to North Korea for its testing of missiles. Iran was sanctioned for its role in worldwide terrorism. But the remaining 20 sanctions were directed at Israel - the only democracy in the Middle East, the nation that has turned desert into the most productive land, leads research in many fields, including medicine, and one that is constantly threatened with extinction by its close neighbours and the Iranians. We congratulate the leaders of our main political parties, Liberal and Labor, for opposing this injustice in the past and hope this support will be part of the promises made in this election. Christians believe Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s promises to Abraham. He has promised to bless those who supported Israel and to curse those who oppose it. Dawn of the Vietnam vets When I and other Vietnam veterans returned to Australia we were shunned by the public and refused entry into the RSL. The RSL claimed we hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fought in a declared war, hence we were forced to have our own association. On 29 April Father Kevin Dillon wrote an article asking why we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have an Anzac Day dawn service on Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s waterfront. The Vietnam Veterans Association, the National Servicemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association, Fr Dillon and I formed a committee and wrote to the Geelong RSL, inviting it to join with us in seeking approval from City of Greater Geelong for a dawn service at Eastern Beach. We had to wait for a month for a reply, in which the RSL president told us he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t support service at dawn. Comic Colin takes on serious role By LUKE VOOGT Australian comedy royalty will perform in Geelong next week when one half of iconic duo Lano and Woodley appears in Extinction. Colin Lane will play Harry Jewell, a mining executive driving to the Otways to live with his parents after splitting with his wife. On a wild, rainy night, he hits a tiger quoll and takes it to a vet, meeting environmentalist Piper Ross, played by Ngaire Dawn Fair. “He thinks it might alleviate some of his life’s crises by donating some company funds,” Lane told The Indy during a break in rehearsal. “It raises some interesting questions: do you take money if it’s offered to save endangered animals even if it’s from one of the world’s biggest polluters?” Despite Extinction being an “intelligent drama”, Lane said his comedy experience came in handy, especially imagining a mining executive dealing with three passionate environmentalists. “There’s comedy with a little bit of the fish out of the water scenario,” he said. It’s a similar situation for Lane, who’s new to dramatic theatre. “I’ve done mucking around on stages around the world but to tell you the truth, my dramatic experience isn’t that vast,” he said. “I wanted to try a few different things. The older you get the more you want to mix things up. “You should do the things that perhaps scare you a bit.” Since parting with Woodley, Lane has performed in Australian comedy Don’s Party for Melbourne Theatre Company and made various television, stage and festival appearances. He quoted Judi Dench when explaining why he took on his most recent role. “She doesn’t even read scripts, she just finds out the people involved in the project,” he said.

DRAMA: Funnyman Colin Lane takes a serious turn in a new stage production at GPAC. When Lane heard that Hannie Rayson, (Hotel Sorrento, Life After George) wrote the play and acclaimed film director and producer Nadia Tass would direct it, he thought, “Well, that’s a good start”. “I heard who the cast was and that got me very interested.” Lane joins seasoned performers Natasha Herbert in Extinction, along with Red Stitch ensemble members Brett Cousins and Fair.

Set in the Otways, the play draws attention to the plight of the endangered tiger quoll - the largest marsupial predator on the Australian mainland. Rayson said the play was “an examination of what it means for the soul to bear witness to the extinction of a species”. “In writing Extinction, I wanted to run a mile from the agro and politically congested, ideologically jammed debates. I wanted to write about

real people of good will, facing real decisions and real choices.” The play is a co-production between Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) and Red Stitch in partnership with Greening Australia, Australian Conservation Foundation and the Conservation Ecology Centre Cape Otway. Extinction plays GPAC from 13 to 16 July.

Geelong Repertory Theatre Company promises a unique experience for theatre-goers with a threein-one play coming to Geelong West this week. Movin On, starting 1 July, is a trio of one-act plays which examine the twists and turns that confront mere mortals in relationships. North Geelong’s Peter Jukes directs the one-act plays, which he says are a rarity for the company. “They’re all comedies but they’ve all got a dark side, which I like.“ Ferris Wheel, by American playwright Mary Miller, finds two lonely and lost middle-aged strangers stuck together in the highest cabin of a broken-down Ferris wheel. In their predicament they make some disturbing and surprising revelations about themselves ... could this lead to something more than just a brief encounter? Claudia Clark and Geoff Gaskill bring these two oddball characters to life. In Merge - by Neil LaBute - a young American couple is driving home from the airport after the woman has returned from a conference interstate.

Australia’s ‘Sailor Girl’ is the new ambassador for January’s Festival of Sails, Royal Geelong Yacht Club has announced. Nic Douglass, a “true icon in the sailing world”, was a coup for the Southern Hemisphere’s largest keelboat regatta, said event chairman Peter Alexander. “Nic will be our on-the-ground commentator, documenting the race action and shoreside activities through social media, interviews and videos, basically showcasing everything the event has to offer to a local, national and international audience,” he said. A two-time world and six-time Australian champion with grade-one and Olympic World Cup regattas under her belt, Douglass has also commentated at sailing events on TV in Europe and the United States. Douglass was “very excited” about her ambassador role with the Geelong regatta. “Last year I was involved with more than 40

SPORT ‘A few players’ to blame for Cat losses, says Ling By LUKE VOOGT The Cats will have a weekend of self-reflection during the bye after yet another shock loss to a bottom-eight team. Geelong lost in a three-point thriller to St Kilda despite having beaten Hawthorn, GWS, North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, all premiership contenders this year. It was the club’s third loss to a bottom-eight team so far this year, following defeats to Carlton and Collingwood. Former club greats weighed in this week on how the Cats had beaten the AFL’s best but lost supposedly easy games. Three-time premiership winner Cameron Ling told Melbourne radio that Geelong players lacked “five to ten per cent” in their preparation. “I could only put it down to an approach that isn’t as 100 per cent detailed and as perfect as it should be,” he told 3AW on Sunday. Ling put the blame on some players rather than the coaching staff. After sensational performances against the top clubs, some players were thinking “we’ll play like that again and we’ll beat St Kilda”, he said. “A few players now have had really ordinary games ... where the expectation was that we were going to win.” Ling said Mitch Duncan was quiet in the first and Steven Motlop had no influence. Motlop had lacked consistency this year, which both the player and coach Chris Scott had acknowledged, Ling said. “When he’s good he’s outstanding, but when he’s not so good he’s extremely poor.” Scott was also critical of his team’s performance. “Less than our best is not good enough,” he said on Fox Footy. Scott was left fuming in the dying minutes of the game as Brownlow favourite Patrick Dangerfield inexplicably sat on the bench. Commentators were confounded as Dangerfield stood on the boundary line for several minutes and the Saints kicked the last two goals of the match.

Three juniors make the cut to contest hockey nationals By LUKE VOOGT Three local boys will play in School Sports Victoria’s (SSV) under-12 hockey team for the first time at national titles in a few weeks. Torquay’s Harry Bradbury, 10, Belmont’s Kade Leigh, 11 and Highton’s Jamie van der Ploeg, 12, will begin training with the Victorian team this Sunday. Sandra Bradbury said son Harry had worked hard to make the team. He tried out last year, aged nine, playing against boys nearing 12, she said. “This year we had a really good feeling he’d get through. He’s a really determined kid.” Kade said he was excited about representing the SSV team in Cairns at the end of July. “I’m looking to learning new skills.” It will be the second SSV trial for Kade, who plays juniors for Newtown and Altona with Harry. He’s fast, too, narrowly missing out on a spot in SSV’s 100m sprint team this year.

Jamie is part of the under-14 Geelong Junior Representative Team, which competes in a Hockey Victoria Metropolitan Junior Competition. He was unlucky to miss out in the SSV trials last year, his mother Katey Smoker said. “He should have got in, but he had a bad trial, although when you’ve got 100 kids competing, it can be hard to be seen.” The boys have also earned their families a welcome winter reprieve as they travel to sunny Queensland for the championship. “Going to Cairns is nice when everybody has to stay here in the wet weather,” Katey said.

Harbour shields keener anglers ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Garfish made their presence known to anglers fishing from the rocks at St Helens and Limeburner’s Point boat ramp over the past week. Small baits such as silverfish and pippies suspended under pencil floats accounted for reasonable numbers of fish, with the wind blowing gently from behind a key factor for success. Anglers who fished Corio Bay from boats encountered pinkie snapper to just over 1kg while casting plastics around the Western Beach moorings and further north near the Grammar School Lagoon. At times, schools of Australian salmon appeared feeding on the surface. Clifton Springs’ whiting remained on the chew out from the Dell, with plenty of squid still holding in close. St Leonards attracted plenty of anglers seeking whiting, but anglers had to work harder to locate a decent bag. Anyone who managed to pin down a reasonable school happily found that the average size was better than in recent weeks. Queenscliff Harbour was ideal for hiding from the Antarctic-like conditions of the past week. Anglers casting soft plastics along the main cut on a tide change bagged silver trevally averaging 35cm. The odd squid was also taken inside the harbour on small artificial jigs. Anglers spinning along the Surf Coast caught Australian salmon to 2.5kg, with Bancoora Beach a solid producer. Sea Iron Pelacus lure worked well in conjunction with long casts at the start of a run in tide. Anglers fishing bait off the beaches toward Apollo Bay also caught salmon. The western district remained productive for southern bluefin tuna. Water around 70m from Port Fairy to Portland returned fish averaging 15kg willing on skirted lures. The estuary systems down the west fished well for bream in the lower reaches. Vibe-style lures slowly worked along the bottom well. On the freshwater front, Lake Bullen Merri produced rainbow trout resembling footballs. Anglers noted using down-riggers set at 8m to 10m were successful, while shore-based fishos did best at night on Chinook salmon to 2kg while fishing Powerbait and bluebait fillets. Hugh Hanson ventured down to the ‘Lake of 1000 Casts’, or Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, last weekend. Casting a Fish Arrow soft plastic Hugh, landed a wellconditioned redfin of 46cm that gave an outstanding account for itself. The Barwon River in Geelong held reasonable numbers of redfin averaging 30cm. Anglers caught them while casting small deep-diving hard-body lures. Next week should be worth fishing in the surf with bait or lures for salmon, while Lake Bullen Merri should be an ideal freshwater option for trolling lures in search of trout or Chinook salmon.
