If Labor wins, the Eastern Legal Community Centre will receive $450,000 in funding over three years, as part of a $43 million initiative for legal services working with family violence survivors. Mr Smith said the national result was “very close”, but that he concurred with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who said in a late-night speech on Saturday that he believed the Coalition would win enough seats to form government.

On election day, Mr Melkonian said that he felt the seat had been forgotten, as it was a safely-held Liberal seat. However, he said the Yarra Valley would benefit from the seat being more marginal. In first-preference votes, Mr Smith received 49 per cent of the vote outright, while Mr Melkonian received 29.27 per cent; The Greens’ Dr Elissa Sutherland received 11.65 per cent, while Animal Justice Party candidate

Kristin Bacon received 4.3 per cent. Independent Peter Charleton received three per cent of the vote, while Rise Up Australia Party candidate Angela Dorian received 2.65 per cent. Almost four per cent of the vote so far - some 2952 ballot papers - was recorded as informal. Mr Melkonian was contacted for comment, but did not respond by deadline.

Regardless of the winner, new phone towers will be built in Chum Creek, Reefton, Kalorama and Mount Evelyn, with both parties pledging support for addressing mobile phone black spots. Monbulk Recreation Reserve would receive $600,000 from the Coalition or $750,000 from Labor, adding funding towards a $2.5 million upgrade for the area to build upgraded changerooms, a gym and canteen, among other improvements.

TONY Smith looks set to be re-elected to the seat of Casey, with the national result of the federal election still too close to call. As of 9am on Monday, 4 July, Mr Smith had 55.27 per cent of the vote after preferences, with Labor’s candidate Hovig Melkonian receiving 44.73 per cent, with 77.7 per cent of votes counted. Fewer than 8000 votes separated the two candidates. Federally, the election result is still too close to call, with uncertainty about which party will come out on top - the Australian Electoral Commission reports the ALP as ahead with 69 seats, while the LNP trails with 64. Six seats have been won by the Greens, independents or minor parties, with 11 seats undecided or too close to call. Mr Smith told the Mail on Sunday morning that he was “humbled” by the result from the campaign, and expected his numbers to be strengthened by postal votes during the week. “I’d like to thank the local community for their continuing support and faith in me,” he said. “It’s hard to speculate when you’re the candidate, but what I would say is that I worked very hard to articulate the national plan, as well as a very considered and fully-funded local plan, and that will deliver benefits directly to our local community.” “And I think that, now we’ve got to the end of the campaign, when you look at the policy pledges I made, they were certainly more comprehensive than any of the other candidates, in terms of putting forward a local plan.” The AEC announced over the weekend it would be spending Sunday sorting absent, interstate, postal and other votes to be packaged and sent to their home division, with counting to resume on Tuesday. If the Coalition wins nationally, Liberal-pledged CCTV cameras will be funded for Yarra Glen, Woori Yallock, Mount Evelyn and Monbulk. Sporting clubs could also benefit, with hundreds of thousands in funding pledged by Mr Smith for netball lighting and courts in Montrose, Healesville and Coldstream.

Ink is in Danny's blood By JESSE GRAHAM AFTER 40 years of putting ink to paper, Danny Zemp’s advice to young cartoonists is simple “Head down, bum up, follow your passion.” Mr Zemp, a Healesville resident and the Mail’s resident cartoonist, said the key to developing a skill like drawing was routine and practice. “I think if you just draw when you have to, you become detached,” he said. “But, if you’re working towards a deadline and set yourself a goal - like, by Wednesday you want to send out a cartoon to the Mail ... hopefully it works. “You’ve got to get into a routine, into a habit of doing it.” He said that he started “when I was a wee little lad”, and that his inspiration largely came from French cartoonists and from reading Asterix and The Adventures of Tintin as a child. “My dad’s still cross about me, because I inked ... his original Asterix cartoons,” Mr Zemp said. “It was just funny, and I just filled it in, and that’s how you start - you start copying someone else’s style until it becomes your own.” Mr Zemp’s style of political cartoons is no-nonsense. Covering topics from illegal rubbish dumping, to policing motorcyclists, and political mudfights, his works are often simple and cut through the spin to show a different perspective on an issue. After the news of the Yarra Ranges Council endorsing a $28 million rebuild for their Lilydale offices earlier this year, Mr Zemp’s cartoon featured a man sleeping on a park bench, covered only by the Mail with “Shire’s $28m offices” on the front page. “As a political cartoonist, you always see the cynical side of it, and you have to be critical about what’s there, what’s out there - and sometimes, it’s holding a mirror up to the people,” he said. “I’m not a politically active person, but I like to sit on the fence and see how things unfold, and that’s where I take my inspiration. “I don’t have a swing left or right - I’m fairly neutral, but I like to see how they beat each other up, metaphorically speaking.” Working as an arborist during the day, Mr
The Mail's resident cartoonist, Danny Zemp. 156206 Zemp said his goal as a cartoonist was to earn a steady living from selling his art. He said that, while he still completed many of his works with paper and ink, he now utilised tablets and a desktop computer for much of his work. “I was fairly traditionalist ... (but) you’ve got to be able to move with the times as well,” he said. “From a collector’s point of view, it’s sacrilege in a way, because if you do that stuff digitally, how do you hang an original on the wall?
Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
“There’s so many avenues you can do - there’s no such thing as saying ‘You have to do it that way’, or 'Learn to do it by hand first, then work on the computer’.” He said an editorial cartoon should be about a current news event or accompanying an article, and should sum up the story in one image. “If you do a political cartoon, it’s a one-day fly - it’s accurate today, it’s non-existent tomorrow,” Mr Zemp said. “It should be closely working with the editor -
sometimes, the editor goes ‘I have a feeling about this, but in words I can’t quite put it together - can you put something together?’ “It might be challenging and you can’t get it right, but it’s not the point about getting it right all the time - it’s about making a statement and see what your thought process of it is, what you feel about it.” Mr Zemp’s work can be viewed at www.dannyzemp.com, Zemp Art - Cartoons and Illustrations on Facebook and regularly in the pages of the Mail.

Emerald's search for gems EMERALD Police are appealing for anyone who comes across a blue velvet bag containing jewellery to hand it in to the station. The volunteer co-ordinator of a community market held at the Cockatoo Community Centre on election day, Saturday, 2 July, misplaced the bag during the day and is desperate for its return. Senior Constable Kieran Carson said while the exact value of the jewellery, which included gold and diamonds, was unknown, it has great sentimental value. He said the woman took the jewellery to the market to get one of the jewellers to look at it and at the end of the day noticed it was no longer in her pocket. “It is all family jewellery, including her father’s wedding band, a necklace, two sets of earings and a pendant,” Sen Const Carson said. He said they were hoping someone had found it, or might find it, if it had been overlooked somewhere. “This lady is someone doing a good job for the community, and she is terribly upset, not about the money, but about the sentimental family value that can never be replaced.” The community centre is at 75 Pakenham Road in Cockatoo. Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Emerald Police on 5954 0200.
THE Mount Evelyn Township Group is running its annual 'Have Your Say’ or ‘Planning Day’ on Wednesday,13 July, from 5pm to 9pm. The venue is the Yarra Hills Secondary College in the town. Community members are encouraged to become involved, voice their opinions, share ideas and contribute in a positive way. The planning event seeks to identify priority areas, promote co-operation, address social inequalities and issues, and encourage partnerships. The group will receive support from Yarra Ranges Council. Pictured at front, from left, are Sue Colverso and Deb Shugg. A MAN who had his wallet stolen at knife-point at Boronia Railway Station on Monday (4 July) morning has had it returned after swift action by police. The robbery happened in broad daylight at around 11am. Boronia Police Acting Sergeant Julian Apps said the man handed his wallet over after the offender produced a knife, and then ran off. The victim was able to provide information to police which identified the man and resulted in him being apprehended as he circled back to the station. Acting Sgt Apps said swift action paid off, with detectives and van crews from Boronia and Knox responding. He advised that in such situations, it was safest to do what was asked.

THE CFA is a proud organisation with a long history of volunteerism. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs, where time and time again we have seen the CFA protect our communities from the very real threat of bushfire. Unfortunately, Premier Daniel Andrews is looking to sell off our greatest volunteer asset to the United Firefighters Union (UFU) as payback for the union’s support for Labor at the 2014 State Election. So far, former minister Jane Garrett has resigned and the board of the CFA has been sacked. Just last week, CFA CEO Lucinda Nolan resigned. This is all because they opposed the UFU’s proposed EBA for career firefighters, which will see volunteers sidelined and rip apart the heart and soul of the CFA as we know it. The Minister, CEO and board are not the only ones that oppose the EBA. It has also been publicly criticised by Victoria’s Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, the CFA’s Crown Counsel, Jack Rush QC, a former Bracks Minister, the
VFF, CWA, 3AW’s Neil Mitchell and thousands of volunteer firefighters. Daniel Andrews has now installed a new Minister for Emergency Services, Monbulk MP James Merlino, who has promised to be a ‘yes man’. He has installed a new board - who somehow managed to find, interview and appoint a new CEO in a matter of mere hours on a Friday night - a speed virtually unheard of for any government body, and with good reason. The CFA comprises just over 100w0 career firefighters and up to 60,000 volunteer firefighters. This EBA would give the UFU a veto board of all CFA management decisions. It would stop career firefighters reporting to a volunteer, even if the volunteer is the incident controller with 30 years’ experience. This EBA would prevent volunteer and career firefighters from riding in the same truck without the UFU’s permission. This EBA would ensure that in areas serviced by an integrated station, volunteer firefighters must wait for the arrival of seven paid firefighters before they could commence any firefighting. What volunteers want is to ensure that the CFA is equipped to protect the state of Victoria 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year without restrictions and limitations placed upon them by a premier who is more committed to his union mates than Victoria’s safety.

A tale of ice By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FORMER Avonsleigh and Emerald resident Luke Williams has told his story about a life of drugs and self-destruction in a recently released book. Before becoming a well-respected journalist, Mr Williams grew up in Avonsleigh and Emerald until he was 18 years old. It was in the Hills that he endured years of drug abuse brought about by a tough time at school and mental illness. “I had a good childhood in Avonsleigh, but when I went to Emerald Secondary College I was very badly picked on and bullied because I had slept with a male friend of mine when we were about the same age,” Mr Williams said. “People found out and I got picked on for being gay; my primary schools friends disowned me, even the kid with muscular dystrophy picked on me for it.” Mr Williams said he found it very difficult to make and keep friends once he had been branded as ‘the gay kid’ but managed to have a small group of friends as he went through the later years of school. “I did have my own friends that I made, but they all tended to be outsiders and misfits and that was okay,” he said. During Year 12, Mr Williams tried to fight back against his bullies but received death threats for his efforts and ended up completing his high school education via correspondence. “When I finished high school, I had really bad anxi-
Luke Williams chronicles his struggles with ice in his new book, The Ice Age. ety,” Mr Williams said. “It happened from the second I stepped onto the school yard; people would call me names and I didn’t understand it at the time, and though it seems obvious now, I couldn’t understand where the anxiety came from.” It was shortly after he completed high school that Mr Williams started experimenting with drugs to help control his anxiety problems. “I started experimenting with drugs through people I knew in Cockatoo,” he said. Mr Williams said the people in Cockatoo were what he needed at the time to escape from his tortured life in Emerald. “Cockatoo was gritty fun and had no politics, and I liked it, it was what I needed at the time,” he said. “Through those folk, I came into using needles and amphetamines all the time, couldn’t
leave the house unless I was on drugs and the more I took the worst the anxiety got in the long run, but I gained a lot of shortterm confidence.” Mr Williams continued to use illicit substances until he had a drug-induced psychotic breakdown about two years after finishing high school. “I was experiencing audio hallucinations and delusions of grandeur as well as delusions of persecution and finding double meanings in words that weren’t there,” he said. Mr Williams’ drug use only continued from there until he sought help for his addictions. While researching crystalmeth addiction, Mr Williams’ previous drug issues resurfaced and he became addicted to ice. He has written about his experiences of being a drug user in his book ‘The Ice Age: A journey into crystal-meth addiction’ and how this drug can destroy people.

Corey’s one outstanding student By PETER DOUGLAS FORMER Cire Community School student Corey Everitt has been rewarded for his dedication, winning the Most Outstanding Senior VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) Student in 2015. Corey, who is from Monbulk and attended the school’s Mount Evelyn campus, recently received the award at a special presentation at Federation Square. Victorian Education Minister, James Merlino, presented the awards at the ceremony, in which the attendees included Corey’s parents and staff from the community school. Corey has continued to prog-
ress and is now studying media and communications at Deakin College. But it was a long journey for Corey, who had been disengaged from education for more than 12 months before beginning his VCAL studies last year. Early on it proved tough going. Though, by term two, he improved dramatically; then, by term three, he was a leading member of the Senior VCAL class. Corey said he was glad to have started VCAL. VCAL provides an alternative secondary education pathway for students attracted to applied learning.
“The transformation I went through - from an absent and reclusive kid, to an inspired student ... was a pretty substantial change,” he said. “Unbeknown to me, it was supposedly significant enough for a group of judges to think I deserve such an award.” He encouraged other students to keep persisting, particularly with VCAL. “What some don’t see is that the program gives freedom for an active student to prosper and succeed, and also an alternative for the few that just need a helping hand,” he said. Corey hopes to continue studying at Deakin and begin his Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) next year.

Letters 20 years of helping AFTER a humble beginning, the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) begins its 20th year of assisting those in need in the Hills. Situated in a small office in the Main Street of Belgrave, a team of dedicated volunteers help those who need assistance. The service provides food parcels, food vouchers, petrol vouchers, Myki cards, practical assistance, and support for the homeless with food and bedding. Clothing is provided through the op shop, also in the Main Street next to the post office. The MiPlace drop-in centre is open for the homeless and lonely in the Tin Shed where a light lunch is provided and a shower is available. There are trained staff to help with personal problems and counselling is on offer. As with every charity, DRERS relies on the generosity of the public, churches, businesses and partners, to help us continue the assistance we give. Although some funding is given, it is never enough, as unfortunately our services are increasingly needed. At the end of the financial year, we appeal to those of the community who are able to help us to do so. All donations over $2 are tax deductable. Donations can be given via www.drers.org. au, or mailed to PO Box 744, Belgrave, Victoria 3160. Frank Watson, Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service.
It's just not funny

I AM a fund-raiser with the Emerald Branch of the RSL. I was selling Anzac Day badges on 23 April, when a male grabbed the cash tin off the table and made off with it - up the footpath about 100m. He then turned around and laughed and said it was a joke. I did not think it at all funny, as it has had severe repercussions on me. Because of this idiot’s behaviour, I approached the police and asked them to charge him with offensive behaviour. Nothing doing.
I wrote to the RSL administration and asked them for help. Nothing doing. So, as I have no protection (he could do it again), I have not alternative than to cease volunteering. I would like to thank all those wonderful people who have bought badges and given donations over the last four years during my time as a volunteer. Reluctantly, I have got to hand in my resignation. Thanks again. Barry Harris, Clematis
CFA 'takes sides' I AM sad and disillusioned to see the CFA, an organisation I once thought was apolitical, taking sides in the federal election. Do their members not understand the difference between state and federal issues? The CFA dispute is overwhelmingly a state issue and has nothing to do with federal politics. (Casey MP) Tony Smith and his leader (Prime Minister, Malcolm) Turnbull are using the CFA as their own pawns in their political game; to cadge every vote they can, by any means. I belong to no political party; but for the CFA members to allow themselves to be used by a very desperate Federal Government is very disturbing. Are they so naive they can’t see they are just being used up, for a blatant political exercise by a regime very much on the nose? The Liberals have already stated, to balance their huge business tax cuts, they will, yet again, slash welfare spending, pensions, benefits; they will hit the disabled, all to fund the big end of town tax cuts. I wonder how these CFA gullible members will feel when their penalty rates are cut, pensions are cut, and their Medicare slashed? I think it’s a real shame the CFA volunteers, whom I have admired greatly, have come in on the LNP side in this election. I thought they had more nous and common sense to be used like this, and I thought they were above petty party politics. Stephen Bickell, Mount Evelyn.

Kids plan for smoking ban By PETER DOUGLAS IF YOU are born after 1 January, 2020, one day it may be against the law to smoke cigarettes. At least, that’s if a group of health-conscious students manage to make a change. A group of students from Mater Christi College have participated in the annual YMCA Youth Parliament program, where youth, aged between 16 and 25, draft and debate issues of importance to them. The group - comprising So-
phie Clarke, Sarah Nixon, Elissa Tifere, Hannah Eastwood, Corinne Carlyon and Chloe Vanderschoot - dipped their toes into political life, deciding on a Bill that proposes a smoking ban. The six-student team said they proposed the Bill because smoking killed more than 14,000 Victorians annually. Their Bill passed Youth Parliament with overwhelming support and will be presented for consideration to Minister for Youth Affairs, Jenny Mikakos. Student Sarah Nixon said a
smoking ban was a logical option to lower health risks associated with smoking. “We can’t just suddenly ban everyone from smoking from a certain date,” she said. “The only logical approach to stop people from smoking is weaning them out. “We want to phase out smoking to improve the quality of life for future generations of Victorians.” More than 20 bills introduced at Youth Parliament have gone on to influence state legislation.

Shelter from the storm By ALANA MITCHELSON PLANS to demolish an iconic multicoloured Emerald bus shelter have been slammed as a “political attack”. Over the past 20 years the shelter has grown to become an unofficial community notice board and, more recently, a protest site for the Let Them Stay pro-refugee campaign. But now the Emerald Village Committee has backed a safety recommendation from a council-funded engineer’s report that found the structure was “seriously rusted”. Earlier this year, the council received complaints about the refugee posters on the bus shelter outside the Emerald Community House and used pressure hoses to remove the signs. Cardinia Shire Council has denied its plan to remove the shelter is politically motivated but says it is due to the danger it poses. Emerald Community House manager Mary Farrow said the push to replace the shelter was a political and personal attack. “It’s just escalated and escalated,” she said. “We are in shock that the muchloved bus shelter is being replaced. “Other shelters in the area are covered in graffiti and ivy, but you don’t see the council rushing to do anything about that. “We have managed the shelter for seven years, displaying notices about issues that are important to our community without any objection but as soon as refugee posters were displayed, they’ve used any excuse to silence the little guy.” Ms Farrow said she did not believe there were any safety issues and said she had not seen a copy of the engineer’s report.
Emerald Community House co-ordinator Mary Farrow, Emerald for Sustainability convenor Lee Fuller, Emerald Community House vice-president Geoffery Pepperell and Emerald Community House committee member John Sheills. 150580 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “The council owns the shelter but the artwork and façade is 100 per cent our property,” she said. “We don’t want a glass one that is repeatedly vandalised and not a good fit for our connected and vibrant community.” Ms Farrow said the Resilient Melbourne project and Monash University Disaster Resilience Forum had recently promoted the shelter as an example of “community connectedness”.
Ranges Ward councillor Brett Owen said the council would consider the Emerald Village Committee’s wish to replace the town icon with a heritage-type shelter which complied with disability and safety requirements. Emerald Village Committee chairman Dick Bartley said his committee voted to support the plan after it had received considerable community input. “We would have liked to keep the shelter if possible - it’s a bit of a nov-
elty in the town - but the report came back saying it could not be repaired,” Mr Bartley said. Cardinia Shire community wellbeing general manager Jenny Scicluna said the shelter was one of six to be replaced in the hills this year. “The Emerald Community House has never had authority to manage or maintain the shelter,” Ms Scicluna said. “Any programs involving the shelter have been created without consul-
tation with the asset owner, namely council. “Decisions regarding the removal of the bus shelter were based on safety concerns and are unrelated to any political matters. “The messages displayed on the shelter have no relevance to council’s decision. This is a public safety issue and council is compelled to act.” The council is yet to decide when the shelter will be replaced.

Skin deep message for life By RUSSELL BENNETT STEVE Goodie has been involved as a player, coach or administrator in many local football leagues. Now he’s hoping to reach them all with his crucial, potentially life-saving melanoma message. Goodie, now 47, has played more than 400 games across stints at Gembrook-Cockatoo and Upwey-Tecoma in the AFL Yarra Ranges competition, EFL powerhouse Vermont, Cora Lynn and ROC; and also held numerous coaching roles and served as the Brookers’ president for 10 years. His family’s battle extends far beyond any footy field or netball court, but the local sporting community is the perfect vessel to spread its message. Steve’s wife Carolyn, or ‘Caz’ as she was known by most, was the sort of person who makes sporting clubs tick and its people gravitate towards her. When she lost her battle with melanoma last June aged just 45, the impact was felt throughout the local community. While Steve was the long-time figurehead, or front-man of the Brookers, Caz was doing all the tireless work behind the scenes to keep the club moving and did so until just a few short months before she lost her battle - leaving behind Steve, and daughters Alex and Chloe, now 17 and 16. The past year has been full of peaks and troughs that the Goodie family has navigated together with their close friends and family, and now they’re moving forward with a message that they hope will save lives. Saturday, August 13 - Round 17 of the AFL Yarra Ranges season - has been renamed ‘Carolyn Goodie Melanoma Cancer Awareness Round’ and every senior football and netball team across the competition’s two divisions are playing their part to shine a spotlight on the deadly disease. The fact is Australia has the highest rate of melanoma anywhere in the world. On average, 30 Australians are diagnosed every day; and close to 1700 will die from it each year - more than the national road toll. The public battle currently being fought by Hawthorn superstar Jarryd Roughead made front page news across the country; but for so many people who haven’t yet been directly touched by the disease, it’s all-too-often a case of out of sight, out of mind. “Carolyn had her first melanoma removed 18 years ago, when she was in her late twenties,” Steve said. “She then had another one removed in 2012. The cancer just popped up they don’t know why. “It’s more than a mole. That’s cancerous, but it’s more the secondary cancers that it can cause. For example Jarryd Roughead had a melanoma removed from his lip, but the cancer spread to his lung.
Football identity Steve Goodie, second left, is pictured during his time with the Gembrook Football Netball Club. He’s pictured with, from left, MP Hugh Delahunty, Hailey Clarke and Gembrook MP Brad Battin. 54422 “Look - this isn’t about Caz. It’s about awareness for other people. “I’ve been involved in footy for 30 years and this is my platform. This is the only way I know how to spread the message, through footy and netball circles. “Who was Carolyn Goodie? She was the girl next door. She was the mother, the daughter, the person who just happened to marry a football-head. She didn’t have a big name but she was someone who was unlucky enough to marry a footballer and be involved in the community all her life. This really can happen to anyone.” On 13 August, footballers and netballers across the Yarra Ranges competition will wear blue and yellow armbands - the colours associated with Melanoma Institute Australia. There will also be a fund-raiser, including an auction featuring signed guernseys from the Geelong, Richmond, Essendon, North Melbourne and Adelaide AFL sides. But mainly, it’s about awareness. Through the Cancer Council, Steve has hundreds of flyers and posters of
mole photos that he’s hoping to have distributed to trainers’ rooms in clubs throughout the hills and - hopefully clubs throughout the south-east. “If a trainer can say ‘there’s a mole on your back, go and see someone’, it puts it in the players’ minds,” Steve said. Cora Lynn player-coach David Main and his wife, Emily, great friends and neighbours of the Goodies, wanted to have a fund-raising night for the family in the months leading up to Carolyn’s passing. “We didn’t want it at first, but Caz agreed in the end as long as half of it went to research,” Steve said. “When we left the fund-raiser, I said, 'Isn’t it great that we’ve raised enough money to get something - some equipment or whatever - that might help you?’ and she said ‘Steve, it’s not about me. It’s about the next person’. “I was just overwhelmed by that, and it’s probably those words that’ve pushed me into this. “The thing is, the ages of 18 to 30 are the ages that people - both male and female - don’t really care. We all think
we’re bulletproof. “Caz had her first melanoma removed and then had constant checks every year; then two years, then five years. “She came to me in the November of 2014 and said she had a little lump on her side. She booked in for an appointment, and six weeks later she was on a hospital bed having blood transfusions and hoping that the tablets she was on would work otherwise she’d die. That’s how quick it can be. “When I saw the surgeon, he said it was the worst case he’d ever seen - it was a bushfire throughout her body. “You’ll never truly understand how it feels until it’s happened to your family.” A year on, and Steve and the girls aren’t as grief-stricken over Caz anymore, but she’s always in their hearts. “I’m lucky,” he said. “We had 23 great years together and I’ve got all those memories. I can sit and talk about her for hours - that’s the reality for me. “I’m biased, I know, but no-one ever said a bad word about Caz. Ever.”

Steve, who won seven premierships as a player, had just signed on as the new coach of SFL outfit the Sandown Cobras in 2014 when he had to step down due to Caz’s battle. But footy remains a crucial part of his life - now as an umpire. “I’d be lost without footy,” he said. “It’s my outlet now through umpiring because I can’t commit to a club anymore. I go with Chloe and we umpire and Alex plays netball, so the sport that we belong to is still helping me. Otherwise I’d be lost on a Saturday doing nothing. Footy helps me to deal with my process.” The Gembrook Cockatoo Football and Netball Club will hold an event on 13 August during its clash against Alexandra to remember one of the great community-minded people, Carolyn Goodie. Anyone who wishes to donate to the fight against melanoma can contact the Eastern Skin Cancer Clinic at www. easternskincc.com.au.

Inside track to lose the weight SHARING a patient’s story: I had made multiple attempts at dietary programs during years of young children. I had always battled with weight issues, but it was worse after having my three children. I tried Gloria Marshall, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, which was a significant financial outlay with little long-term success. At my heaviest weight, I was 110kg. I joined a gym and lost 35kgs over two years. That was back in 2005-’06. Over the next five years, in spite of a personal trainer and going to the gym three times a week, with more financial outlay, I regained 5kg a year (25kg back on). After consulting with Dr Ray McHenry, we made a joint decision to try the Orbera Intra Gastric Balloon. Unfortunately, I was unable to have the balloon due to medical reasons. I was actually relieved I couldn’t have it done, rather than disappointed. After further consultation with Dr McHenry, we decided on the gastric band, which I had done in January 2011. Initially, I had success with weight loss and lost 25kgs. I began to have increasing
issues with intolerance, which caused me to slowly regain the weight. Eighteen months after having the gastric band surgery, Dr McHenry removed my gastric band. With no gastric band in place, I regained all the weight I had lost over the next 12 months despite following a careful healthy eating and exercise program. After having a sleeve gastrectomy performed in June 2014, I have lost 35kg. I am healthy, happy and I have great quality of life. This is much easier than managing a gastric band and my BMI is down to 23. I now feel like I am the me who was always hidden on the inside. I am off blood pressure medication; my knee problems which were heading towards knee replacement have now significantly improved. I am now looking forward to healthy, active retirement. It has been quite a journey but the team at LAPSurgery Australia has supported me all the way to success. Thankyou! LAPSurgery Australia is located at 2 Langwith Avenue, Boronia. Keeping it light on your feet, wallet OUR feet are vital for mobility and balance. They are the basis of most of our physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. Heel, arch, ankle and knee pain are most common in both children and adults; and can become life-affecting or debilitating, if left untreated. But there is often a simple solution, if you get a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Musculoskeletal podiatrist, Dr Tim Kirwan, from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics said people shouldn’t wait to take action. “People often endure foot and leg pain and concerns for far too long, often because they are misdiagnosed and so receive inappropriate treatment or because they simply don’t know who to go to for effective treatment,” Dr Kirwan said. “This is really concerning and unnecessary because most foot and leg conditions can be easily overcome, thanks to the latest medical research and treatments.” While there are many doctors and health professionals available right across Victoria, one of the issues we all face is knowing who to go to for
specific problems, and this certainly seems to be a dilemma with many who suffer foot and leg pain, injuries or degenerative conditions like arthritis. “At Foot and Leg Pain Clinics we see so many people who’ve previously been to see multiple health practitioners without having found a long-term solution. “This can be extremely frustrating for the sufferer and can lead to problems progressing further than they need to. “If you suffer any foot, leg, knee or hip pain, regardless of age, you should always seek advice from an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist, one who keeps up-to-date with the latest research and treatments. “Such practitioners have the appropriate training, knowledge and experience to assist your concerns in the best way possible.” If you suffer from any foot, heel, ankle, knee or hip pain, you can get expert advice from Dr Kirwan at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Wantirna. I have worked in the pet and aquarium industry for over 25 years. My passion has always been aquariums but I have started to specialize in AquaScapes or underwater gardens. I owned and managed Boronia Aquarium for over 10 years. I’ve worked with industry leaders in fish health and water quality to not only increase my knowledge but to also give something back to the aquarium industry. I’ve represented the aquarium trade in meetings with Chris Rout policy makers and helped the RSPCA with aquarium care sheets and welfare concerns. I work closely with Dr Richmond Loh who is one of Australia’s leading aquatic vets. I believe, that with any animal, it’s our duty to look after them as best we can and fish are no different. I will always put the welfare of an animal ahead of a sale. Come in and see me if you need advice on your existing aquarium or if you are interested in setting up a new aquarium or AquaScape.

“Hi I’m Jaxx and I’ll be your dogs groomer today” - this is likely how we will meet when coming to see me at Fish and Feather’s dog grooming salon. But first a little bit about myself. I have completed canine behaviour/psychology and training at the NDTF and have been grooming for 6 years now after completing my course. My passion is to have a holistic approach to each individual dog that comes to me, whether it’s for a dog behaviour consultation and training or if it is in the grooming room. I specialise in dogs that are ‘fear aggressive’ or responsive to grooming which is the case for dogs that have been groomed in environments with time pressures or with individuals that have no experience in canine behaviour; this inadvertently conditions the dog to be reactive. I thrive to give the best advice to clients and to ensure both dog and owner are happy. So come meet me at Fish and Feather for expert advice for you and your best friend.

Big shooter BUDDING Upwey film-maker Tadji Ulrich, 14, has proven himself as a creative talent to watch in years to come. The student has raised eyebrows after entering his short film, ‘I believe’, into a junior film event, Little Big Shots. Although he didn’t finish in the final short-list of 12, he was included in the top 50 and subsequently named a ‘Little Big Shot’. Tadji’s film, as the title suggests, focuses on the themes of reality, imagination and self-belief, and concepts such as ‘man fears what he doesn’t understand’. Tadji said the finished product didn’t come together quickly. “It took months to film, six weeks to edit, and
runs for six minutes and 40 seconds,” he said. “But I’m very pleased with the end result; it was satisfying to see it come together.” In the film, the narrator travels from a heaving city to a mysterious forest, all in search for what he believes as the truth. As a recipient of the Little Big Shot title, ‘I believe’ will feature at the ACMI festival, Little Big Shots, which runs from Sunday 3 to Sunday 10 July. The festival is noted as one of Australia’s top film festival for kids. The films entered must be shot by kids, for kids and about kids. For more details on the festival and screening times, visit www.acmi.net.au

Emerald players
Weapons of mess distraction
By PETER DOUGLAS EMERALD Gemco Players is preparing to host its One Act Play Season, with two of the plays to feature being presented by local writers, directors and actors. Many of these plays will go on to compete in the state-wide One Act Play festivals, of which Gemco Players will host the 22nd Dandenong Ranges One Act Play Festival. Among the featured plays will include ‘Peace of Angels’, which is written and directed by Richard Keown. Keown has been writing and directing plays for more than 42 years in Melbourne and is also a veteran judge. However, this is the first one-act play he has written or directed. “I just never found a play that struck me, that I wanted to direct that could be told effectively in a single act,” he said. The play describes the trials of Australian nurses in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Another to feature includes ‘Wow!’, which is written and directed by Marc Williams. The play focuses on the Parkes Radio Telescope in NSW (as featured in the movie, ‘The Dish’). Meanwhile, ‘The Last Bread Pudding’ and ‘The Struggles’ will also delight audiences. The season is running from Friday, 15 July, from 8pm; to Saturday, 16 July, from 8pm. A Sunday matinee will feature on 17 July at 3pm. Tickets are $15 ($12 for concession). Gemco members enjoy a two-for-one off, which is available at www.gemcoplayers.org or by calling 0411 723 530. Tickets can be purchased at the door. The Gem Community Arts Centre is located at 19 Kilvington Drive, Emerald.

Week celebrates Indigenous By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FROM Sunday 3 to Sunday 10 July is National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee week or NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week celebrates the achievements, history and culture of our nation’s first peoples through a week of activities, learning experiences and performances. The week is designed for all people to gain a better understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Not just celebrated in Indig-
enous communities, NAIDOC week has been picked up by communities all over the country. Both Lilydale and Ferntree Gully will have free NAIDOC week ceremonies that explore Indigenous cultures of the area. The Boorndawan Willam Aboriginal Healing Service will be hosting a morning tea at their centre on Swansea Road. The service will include master of ceremonies Tammy Anderson, a Welcome to Country by Julie Kitto, flag raising by Uncle Henry Atkinson and Smoking Ceremony by Ralph Hume.
There will also be didgeridoo playing, Indigenous tucker and a possum skin healing cloak. The morning tea will begin at 10am on Wednesday 6 July and all are welcome to attend. The NAIDOC week celebrations in Ferntree Gully will take place at the Community Arts Centre and Library, at 1010 Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully. Running from 11am on Thursday 7 July, these celebrations will include a day of family fun activities, story time, arts and craft and cultural education. For more information about NAIDOC week or to find more events, visit www.naidoc.org.au.
I DON’T care what anyone else says; Independence Day (1996) is a great movie. Sure, it’s silly, but it has fun, engaging characters, steady pacing and a near-perfect balance of tone. The mind-blowing scenes of destruction carry a palpable human cost, with much of the first act building mystery and fascination about the aliens before the carnage begins. As such, the film succeeds in being awesome and uplifting but also dramatic and intensely suspenseful, a balancing act much of the blockbuster film industry has forgotten these days. Case in point: even setting aside 20 years of desensitisation to disasters in movies (many of which are in director Roland Emmerich’s own filmography), Independence Day: Resurgence is a terrible movie. Resurgence somehow manages to be more plausible (no hacking an alien mothership with a 1994 Powerbook this time) and more contrived than the first film, with huge leaps of logic and plans that make little sense. The action scenes lack the emotional resonance of those in the first film, with the cluttered, breakneck pacing leaving little time to dwell on the overblown tragedy. It’s great to see original cast members like Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum return, but they have little to do, with the plot driven primarily by younger actors delivering mediocre performances. Independence Day: Resurgence is an overwhelmingly sloppy follow-up to Emmerich’s excellent first film. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Learn what it takes to stand for council By JESSE GRAHAM WITH almost three months left to the Yarra Ranges Council’s elections, it’s time for potential candidates to consider throwing their hat into the ring. The council’s election will be held on Saturday 22 October, and residents will choose their ward councillor to represent them for the coming four years. Those wishing to stand up as a councillor must nominate by noon on nomination day, 32 days before the election, and pay a $250 fee to the Victorian Electoral Commission. Yarra Ranges mayor Jason Callanan said one of the most important things a candidate should have before starting is support - whether it be from family or friends around them. “If you don’t have family support in this, there’s no point doing it,” he said. “You don’t have that backing behind you, the four years will be very hard for you.” Speaking to the Mail on Tuesday 28 June, Cr Callanan said that potential candidates should be prepared to spend 20-30 hours per week on their work as a councillor if elected. “It’s not a part-time, recreational job,” he said. “My advice is that if you haven’t done any type of board experience in the past, go and do some of that.
“You don’t have to be politically savvy in this job ... you just need to know how it works in there, how it works in that council room.” Cr Callanan said candidates should seek advice during their campaign, and that he had started from scratch with his, running a letter drop from the back of his family car - and falling out once along the way. “I had no idea - it was a real unknown, of ‘How do you do this?” he said. “I guess I was a bit lucky, that I had a few people that I could turn to, to find out some advice. Don’t be too proud to ask lots of questions.” He said that he had campaigned on roads, planning reform and projects that would impact families, such as playgrounds, footpaths and health. Though he said councillors are “loaded” with information once they are elected, he said sticking to the issues that dominated the campaign was a good start. “Some simple advice they gave me when I was about three, four weeks in by officers was, ‘What did you campaign for? Just stick to that, and work on that area ... the rest will follow after that’,” Cr Callanan said. Looking at the end of his first term in council, Cr Callanan said there had been “significant inroads” with planning, with the planning department merged with

He said the focus of his re-elec-

mained strong. The Mail also received a response to the letter from Ms Butler, which reads: “Universal charter of human rights states ... everyone has the right to freedom of opinions and expressions; this includes the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information through any media, regardless of frontiers.” It’s hard to argue against that. To expand on Ms Butler’s comments, the best letters are those that seek to build on the ideas of others or, at least, productively question them. Poor letters are those that endeavour to attack a person’s character, particularly if related to a community group or an individual. With all this in mind, we encourage Ms Butler to keep submitting letters, because the Mail loves hearing from her. Don’t let others’ opinions get you down; keep fighting the good fight. THE editorial team at the Mail loves to receive and publish letters from its loyal readers because the more voices and opinions that circulate throughout the opinion pages, the better the Mail contributes to the democratic process in the Yarra Ranges region. Even letters that draw attention to what might be deemed a small issue are important because they are a vital part of our system of governance and, thus, should be valued highly. Not to mention that these letters are often informative or entertaining. With the exception of any malice present in their contributions, the Mail’s letter writers have every right to express their opinion. This is why the Mail is extremely disappointed to hear that one of its regular contributors, Val Butler from Cockatoo, has received criticism over her letters and opinions which are regularly published in the Mail. Ms Butler has received what she called a ‘poison letter’ from an anonymous letter writer, which the Mail has viewed. Clearly, this letter has upset Ms Butler, though she seems to have re-

Jostling for top spots By CAMERON HUTCHISON GROUNDS were a little bit damp, but there was no rain over the weekend. Olinda, Wandin and Healesville still share top spot, while Woori Yallock has a one-game break in fourth and Upwey sit fifth. Upwey-Tecoma will take on Belgrave at Belgrave this week in their Round 11 clash for the Sticky Harris Trophy. After big wins on the weekend, Yarra Glen and Kinglake have given themselves a four-point break on the opposition. Seville, Gembrook Cockatoo and Alexandra share third spot, with Yea and Yarra Junction just outside the five. A week off next week for Division 1 to allow for the Annual AFL Victoria Community Cup Clash on Sunday 10 July, at Preston City Oval. DIVISION 1 SENIORS WANDIN 23.18(156) D EMERALD 9.7(61)
Wandin took a commanding lead at the first break, kicking 7.4 to one behind. This game was always out of reach of Emerald, but they just needed to get some respectability on the scoreboard and fight the game out. Emerald outscored Wandin in the last, kicking 5.2 to 4.3, but the game was well and truly over. Wandin’s kicking was a bit inaccurate and they will want to rectify that before finals. Wandin Best: S. Warburton was brought back to earth on Saturday after their great win last week. Healesville held a 16-point lead at the first break and extended their lead to 30 points at half-time and went into half time full of running. Warburton failed to register a major in the third and the lead extended to 48 points going into the last. Healesville continue their hunt towards finals. Healesville Best: A. Davies, C. Warren, M. Mount Evelyn took an early lead into the second quarter by five points. It was an even second quarter with Mount Evelyn kicking 4.2 to 3.5, as their lead extended to eight points, but it was anybody’s game. Woori Yallock came out full of running in the third, holding Mount Evelyn goalless while they piled on six goals to turn things around and hold a handy 27-point lead into the last. It was pretty much keepings off in the last as Mount Evelyn could not break through with Woori Yallock coming away with a 34-point victory. Woori Yallock Best: J. Matthews (4 goals), J. This was definitely the match of the round. Scores were all tied up at the first break, but Olinda should have been in front after having 10 scoring shots to five. Olinda got their game going in the second, kicking five goals-to-one and it looked like it was going to be a bit of a blow out. Monbulk held Olinda to three behinds in the third, but only managed to kick 1.3 themselves. This game was not pretty to watch, but Olinda looked like they had the game under control with a 21-point lead going into the last. Monbulk rallied and booted 3.3 to 1.1, but it was just too late as Olinda ended up with a seven-point win. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: N. Keegan (2 goals), O. Millwood, M. Hottes, M. Mollica, N. Heveren, B. Norris (3 goals), J. Steyger Powelltown Best: J. Moore (1 goal), Jason Walker (2 goals), T. Hallmark, S. Sanders, N. Moody, W. Dore GEMBROOK-COCKATOO 9.8(62) D SEVILLE 7.11(53)
Gembrook have evened up the ledger and share third spot with Seville, and are vying for that elusive second chance in finals after their gutsy win over Seville on the weekend. Gembrook held a slim seven-point lead at quarter time, and extended that to 18 points at half time after kicking four goals-to-two in the second. Seville failed to score in the third while Gembrook extended their lead. Seville kicked back in the last, holding Gembrook goalless and kicking 3.8 in the last. Indirect kicking by Seville helped Gembrook hold onto a heart stopping nine-point win. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: A. Shipp, D. Leversha, L. Scott (1 goal), M. Maddison, J. Raymond, D. Scott (1 goal) Seville Best: M. Cecere (2 goals), A. Mammoliti, B. Penwill, T. Groen, R. Davis, L. Casini YARRA GLEN 32.21(213) D THORNTON EILDON 4.2(26)
Yarra Glen bounced back after three losses to Kinglake, Gembrook and Seville to record a confidence and percentage boosting 187-point win over the struggling Thornton. It was a reasonably even start with Yarra Glen kicking 5.5 to 3.0 in the first. Yarra Glen kicked into gear in the second, kicking 8.7 while Thornton could only manage one goal. A 9.6 quarter to one behind set up the last to see if Yarra Glen would well and truly run away with it or just play out the game for a win. Yarra Glen piled on another 10.3 to record a huge win. Yarra Glen Best: D. Hurley (5 goals), B. Binion, W. Kristelly, J. Smith (7 goals), L. Telford (2 goals), M. Ashton (1 goal) Thornton-Eildon Best: A. Reddan, J. Strachan, T. Bail (1 goal), S. Danilovic (2 goals), D. Creed, Z. King KINGLAKE 18.8(116) D YEA 8.13(61)
Kinglake now share top spot with Yarra Glen and Yea have now dropped to sixth spot, one game out of the five after a disappointing loss on Saturday. Yea were certainly in the hunt up to half time only being behind by eight points at half-time. Kinglake came out rejuvenated in the third quarter and kicked 5.1 to 1.6 to take a lead of 27 points into the last quarter. Yea’s indirect kicking was going to come back and bite them. Kinglake’s final scoreline of 18.8 was the main reason they came away with a good win. Kinglake Best: J. Nixon (10 goals), C. Arnott, M. McAllister, A. Beales, L. Arthurson, T. Arnott

Motoring C-HR interior showcases future TOYOTA is showcasing the emotional appeal of its future vehicle interiors with the release of the first official interior images of the new C-HR sport-utility vehicle (SUV). Targeting class-leading sensory quality, the interior of the new C-HR delivers a modern and sensual style that stands out in the Toyota range and sets a new direction for its segment. The Toyota C-HR represents the determination of the company’s global president Akio Toyoda to allow greater stylistic freedom and promote engineering creativity with eye-catching designs and enhanced driving pleasure. Due in Australian showrooms early next year, the C-HR remains remarkably true to the concept cars that attracted widespread public acclaim at motor shows in Paris in 2014 and Frankfurt in 2015. Chief designer Kazuhiko Isawa said the C-HR will give Toyota a powerful new presence in the growing small SUV segment, creating a new frontier with a vehicle that is full of originality. “That newness comes from SUV robustness and strength. But we’re not trying to make an SUV that’s dynamic; rather, a dynamic vehicle with SUV-like properties," Mr Isawa said. The interior styling represents a fresh approach for Toyota with a new “sensual tech" design concept, combining high-tech functionality with a sensual and fashionable style. An airy, expansive cabin has been created through the seamless layered architecture of the instrument panel that continues through to the door trim with a stylish ornamentation and a piano black panel. Operating switchgear is slightly oriented towards the driver and an asymmetrical centre console design ensures all controls are within easy reach.
The first official interior images of the new C-HR sport-utility vehicle. 156329 Australian models will feature a 6.1-inch touch-screen that extends from the instrument panel rather than being enclosed by it. This enhances driver visibility due to the design requiring a lower profile for the upper dashboard. Designers focused painstakingly on component quality and the consistency of grain, texture, shape, colour and illumination in every element, even the stitch groove radii of the seats. A unique new two-tiered front seat design combines a slender, sporting upper section with a more strongly bolstered and supportive lower area.
Reinforcing the link between interior and exterior design, the shape of many switches reflects the diamond motif of the exterior body shell. The same diamond theme is also visible in the door trim pattern, the headliner and even the needles of the driver’s analogue instrument dials. Decorative elements are finished in high-quality piano black and satin silver trim with clear blue illumination for the instruments and switches. Prominent blue highlights across the dash and door trims for European models will be replaced by cool-grey inserts for Australia. Local models will feature advanced safety
features including a pre-collision system with autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering control, automatic high beam and a reversing camera. Other available features include heated seats, a smart entry and start system, privacy glass, 18inch alloy wheels and bi-tone metallic paintwork. The Toyota C-HR’s unique character demonstrates the flexibility that the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) gives to vehicle developers in the three key areas of design, powertrain and dynamics. Positioned between the Corolla hatch and the RAV4, the vehicle is 4350mm long, 1795mm wide, 1550mm high and has a 2640mm wheelbase. The exterior design features a diamond architectural theme with wheel arches projecting prominently at all four corners to emphasise strength and rigidity. The structure combines a powerful lower body and raised ground clearance with the slim and sleek cabin profile of a coupe. Coupe-like styling for the five-door C-HR is further enhanced by disguised rear door handles integrated within the C-pillar, a sweeping roofline and an aerodynamic skeletal frame rear spoiler. The strongly tapered cabin integrates a tophinged tailgate for access to the load space and prominent rear light clusters. The C-HR for the Australian market will be powered by a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers maximum power of 85kW and peak torque of 185Nm. It will be available in front and all-wheel-drive configurations with six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmissions.
