WHEN a life is at risk, a hospital seems the safest place to be. But that wasn’t the case for Cranbourne disabled adult Corey McDonald, when staff at the Dandenong Hospital couldn’t operate ceiling hoists needed to lift him in and out of his wheelchair. After four hours in the hospital waiting room Corey’s father, Bruce started to worry. But he soon realised the problem most likely wouldn’t be Corey’s health - but the hospital’s inability to service and maintain their ceiling hoists. “It’s not the first time we’ve had this problem and we wouldn’t be the only families having these issues,” Bruce told the News. After the five and half hour ordeal, Monash Health Hospital staff tried six ceiling hoists to lift Corey, four of which were uncharged and one of which displayed a service sticker dated May 2015. Corey’s parents, Christine and Bruce, are calling the incident “ludicrous”. It began on Wednesday 29 June, when Corey came down with a cough. “Corey was having trouble breathing when laying down, he was gasping for breath, we knew it was not normal,” Christine said. The McDonalds rushed Corey in their fitted-out van to the closest hospital with ceiling hoists. “We were rushed through which was excellent - the first hoist was charged and worked and after an examination and medication we were right to come home,” Christine said. “There are two hoists in each bay, but neither worked - at one stage we had five staff members playing around with it trying to get the hoists to work.” The McDonalds were told by staff that the hoists were rarely used. Bruce said a staff member from another ward who apparently knew how

Drunk PSO assault By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN and woman escaped conviction after pleading guilty to a drunken assault on two Protective Services Officers at Cranbourne railway station. Harley Michael Langhans had grabbed a PSO in a headlock, causing the officer to become “short of breath” during the assault, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 4 July. The intoxicated Langhans was sprayed with OC spray three times and struck with a baton in an attempt to subdue him and two other drunk co-accused. “I was pretty smashed and probably beyond drunk,” he later told police after sobering up in Cranbourne police cells. Co-accused Nicole Wettenhall also appeared in court for striking a PSO trying to arrest her boyfriend surnamed ‘Morgan’ – another coaccused whose case is yet to be heard.

Wettenhall struck the PSO multiple times to the neck and face with an open hand. The three co-accused had been drinking together all day before the incident on 21 May. About 6.45pm, Morgan and Langhans repeatedly pressed a train’s emergency intercom button as it approached Merinda Park station. After being warned by the station’s PSO about their behaviour, the three were allowed to continue travelling on the train to Cranbourne. In full view of passengers, Morgan pulled down his pants and exposed his testicles to the PSO – who reported him to colleagues at Cranbourne station. When approached by two other PSOs at Cranbourne, Morgan refused a direction to stop walking away and pushed aside one of the officers. Langhans and Wettenhall respectively put on a headlock and struck

the officer as he tried to arrest Morgan. After being OC sprayed, the three drunks got in a fighting stance with the two PSOs. Langhans pushed away the hand of a PSO wielding a baton, and was sprayed a second time. Wettenhall and Morgan did a runner, helped by a block from Langhans who was sprayed a third time and struck to the leg with a baton. Police, who had then just arrived at the scene, chased and restrained the two escapees. Morgan told police to “f*** off her, you f***ing wankers” as Wettenhall was handcuffed. One of the PSOs received scratches to his neck, ears and arm, and was taken off operational duties for two weeks as a result of a back injury sustained during the assault. The other PSO had swelling to his neck and scratches to his face. After hearing the case summary, magistrate Pauline Spencer asked

Langhans if that was all he could remember from the incident. “Yeah, pretty much,” Langhans said. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done. It won’t happen again. “I had a few too many. I wasn’t counting ... It was a few.” Ms Spencer asked Langhans what was a “safe drinking level”. “I wouldn’t know,” the accused replied. In a police interview, Wettenhall originally denied assaulting or hindering the PSOs . She told the court she had been upset after being pushed into a fence and getting pepper sprayed for the first time in her life. “I ran because I was scared.” Ms Spencer noted Langhans and Wettenhall had no prior convictions, and Morgan seemed to have been the instigator of the trouble. The pair received 12-month good behaviour bonds and ordered to donate $800 each to the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Yarn bombing hits Cranbourne THE colourful and addictive hobby of yarn bombing has hit Cranbourne in the most unusual of locations. It’s a trend often confined to out-

door spaces, but until Sunday 10 July shoppers at Cranbourne Park will get to enjoy the bright, warm woollies indoors.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A STATE Government appointed monitor - at a cost of up to $40,000 - to oversee the Casey Council’s governance for at least two months is an “absolute waste of ratepayers’ money”, says mayor Sam Aziz. The municipal monitor was appointed in the wake of a damning Victorian Ombudsman’s report into the council’s special charge scheme against 37 residents to seal Market Lane in Narre Warren South. Mayor Sam Aziz said the monitor’s cost was “hugely disproportionate” to the $2204 interest that had been over-charged to Market Lane residents. “This is such a disproportionate response it calls the judgement of (Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins) into doubt, unless it is simply political payback for council’s and my outspokenness against State Government waste ... or denial of a rate cap variation for Casey.” Cr Aziz said the council had already implemented five recommendations from the Ombudsman’s report, including tackling its over-reliance on decisions being made in closed meetings. He said Ms Hutchins relied on an “out of date” figure of 37 per cent of decisions made in closed council in 2014-’15. The figure had reduced to 25 per cent in 2015’16 – “comfortably” within the government’s 30 per cent benchmark, Cr Aziz said. “As far as implementing the recommendations of the Ombudsman, council has already done it. “It doesn’t need a municipal monitor coming up to $40,000 to Casey ratepayers to confirm this.” He said Casey had also achieved above the state average on all measures of the latest annual Community Satisfaction Survey. A Market Lane resident who didn’t wish to be identified told Star News the monitor was a justified move. “It’s only for up to three months and I think someone should look at the way they do things.” The council had been criticised in the Ombudsman’s report on 22 June for using a closed council meeting in 2014 to increase interest rates on the Market Lane special charge. The affected residents were not given prior notice or the opportunity to object to the rise in rate from 4.25 per cent to 7.5 per cent. “We concluded that the council had acted in a way that was wrong, unreasonable, unjust and in two respects, contrary to law,” Ombudsman Deborah Glass stated. “In short, the council’s actions were unfair.” Most of the affected property owners were against the charge – initially between $15,000$20,000 each, plus interest on a 15-year instalment plan. As a result of the interest change, the amount payable increased by 23 per cent, the Ombudsman’s report stated. In May 2015, the council had dropped the interest rate of the charge to 6 per cent, and in July reduced the overall charge due to the roadworks costing less than estimated. During the September investigation, the council agreed to drop its 1.5 per cent ‘administration surcharge’ to one per cent because it exceeded the legal limit.

Federal election Saturday’s federal election produced predictable results in Flinders and Holt, held safely by the Coalition and Labor respectively. La Trobe MP Jason Wood looks likely to scrape back into office after what he has labelled as a “stupid” campaign. CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS and GEORGIA WESTGARTH report.

Liberal MP hits campaign LA TROBE sitting MP Jason Wood, who is likely to narrowly win his seat, has dumped on the Coalition’s “stupid” federal election campaign. Mr Wood was “quietly confident” of victory with a 1300-vote lead on ALP rival Simon Curtis and more than 14,000 postal and pre-poll votes to be counted. “History tells us that postal votes in country seats go more our way,” he said. Mr Wood told Star News on 6 July that he thought the Coalition should have done more to counter Labor’s Medicare-privatisation “scare campaign” and ran harder on “unions and law-and-order”. “We ran a positive campaign on the economy, technology, innovation. A scare campaign kills a positive campaign every day. “We need to be more focused on families and their concerns, and countering scare campaigns.” Mr Wood said some of the Government’s controversial superannuation changes needed to be changed, as did the way Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s office operated in campaigns. Mr Wood said the office was a “closed shop” that overruled him on a “common-sense” election commitment - to match Mr Curtis’s $1 million

Likely La Trobe MP Jason Wood with wife Judy Cheung and daughter Jasmine. pledge in May for a community learning and support centre at Berwick Secondary College. It would tackle domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide prevention and respectful relationships. “It was a worthwhile project and sadly the PM’s office didn’t have the heart and the political brains to support it. “I’ve never experienced that before. In years gone by, under Howard, that would have been approved straightaway.” Mr Wood said the “bucket of money” for election commitments was controlled centrally in Mr Turnbull’s of-

fice, but Government ministers should have had more of a say. “I was dark that up at the PM’s office, it was such a closed shop. That’s something the office has to change.”

HOLT ONE certainty from the decidedly undecided 2 July federal election washup was re-elected Holt MP Anthony Byrne. The Labor incumbent rode a 5.34 per cent swing to boost his two-partypreferred margin to a safe 14.5 per cent.

His nearest rival was Liberal 21-year-old James Mathias, who suffered a 3 per cent swing against him. The Greens, Family First and Rise Up Australia recorded small boosts to their primary votes. Mr Byrne’s swing was roughly double the pro-ALP swing in neighbouring seats such as Bruce (2.9 per cent), La Trobe (3.1 per cent) and Isaacs (2 per cent). In a statement on 5 July, Mr Byrne thanked Holt voters, his staff and volunteers, saying it was “an immense honour to represent this wonderful diverse and vibrant community”. “We will continue to work closely with our community to work on issues such as community safety, infrastructure, job security and jobs growth. On Mr Turnbull’s tenure, Mr Mathias said there was “always speculation” after elections but thought his leader ran an “incredibly good campaign”. “I think we were up against a lot of dishonesty from our opponents.” On the local front, Mr Mathias was overwhelmed by Mr Byrne’s postal vote campaign that “put me behind by 8500 votes before 8am on election day”. Up to three union representatives “surrounded” Mr Mathias, handing out pro-ALP slogans and pamphlets at the Cranbourne pre-poll voting centre. These were resources that the Liberal Party couldn’t match, Mr Mathias said.

FLINDERS THE safe Liberal seat of Flinders has remained blue ribbon, despite a 4.87 per cent swing to Labor after preferences. Australian Labor Party (ALP) candidate Carolyn Gleixner told voters on Facebook “we achieved an incredible feat” on election day. As did Ben Wild of the Animal Justice Party, gaining 4.3 per cent of votes, as of Monday, with 96.37 per cent of the votes counted. Despite this year’s loss to incumbent MP and Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt a very pleased Ms Gleixner told The News “we were expecting to make an impact”. “Even after only 78.6 per cent of the vote has been counted, we have increased our swing by 4.9 per cent (after preferences), which constitutes approximately 5000 votes,” she wrote on Facebook on Sunday 3 July. “It just seemed like voters really wanted change, but in addition to that we have an older population who do seem to have continued their voting strategies.” Mr Hunt, who grew up in Mornington, has held the seat for 15 years and said he was honoured to be re-elected. “The task now is to deliver on the commitments we have made and to fight for other important projects in the electorate, such as the development of Rosebud Hospital,” he said.

Cranbourne CISS Executive Officer, Leanne Petrides says a number of Cranbourne families will miss out on CISS back to school support payments next year, due to massive demand in the wake of the last Government SchoolKids Bonus instalment. 149771 Picture: GARY SISSONS because they can’t afford a second winter uniform- so they do the best they can with what they have.” Ms Petrides said it was basic school needs that could help to res-

cue children from generational poverty, but said her own local program might not stretch that far next year. “We are very disappointed that neither major party supported the

Schoolkids Bonus of two financial instalments a year to eligible parents,” she said. “It helps families afford school excursions, uniforms and books and it has worked for a number of years to great effect and parents are now facing their final payments.” CISS has been running its own school aid program since 2006 thanks to philanthropic trusts and donations. Ms Petrides said without a government funded equivalent, the demand on her local back to school program would massively increase. “In our first year we had $11,000, our latest figure was $40,000 - but only $28,000 of that is guaranteed each year from a trust.” CISS has already planned a meeting to discuss how they will cope with the influx in numbers come January next year, if donations don’t dramatically rise to balance it out. “There will be people we will have to turn away,” she said. But as far as votes are concerned Ms Petrides said her Cranbourne clients had made their minds up long before Saturday 2 July. “As far as the voting system goes we didn’t have as many people coming in asking for help with the ballot papers,” she said. “But a lot of people had made their minds up pretty quick. “We have a voting centre outside the CISS premises and people would vote and then come in for assistance and we did see more people voting pre-poll than previous years,” she said.

SHE’S the woman who helps Cranbourne’s most vulnerable, but it’s the vulnerability of one of her most utilised services that could see children’s futures in tatters. With the final votes still to be counted in the Federal Election, Executive Officer at Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS), Leanne Petrides is unsure how she will fund another year of CISS’s ‘Back to School Support Program’, with the equivalent government program ceasing this month. But one thing she is certain of is the mindset of her Casey clients in the lead-up to the July 2 election. Ms Petrides echoes what Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull admitted on Tuesday 5 July- that voters are “disillusioned” with Australian politics. And with 17 years of experience in crisis intervention, Ms Petrides said the level of disillusionment displayed in the recent election reflected the feedback she got from Casey residents who were seeking financial aid. “I know I’ve said it before but it’s the everyday cost of living, the treadmill of stress. People are feeling that politicians haven’t got a handle on how they are living their day to day lives,” Ms Petrides said. “That’s why days later we still don’t have a result - in winter some families face sending their children to school in summer uniforms and in other cases winter uniforms get rotated around the kids. “It’s literally wash and wear

MICHELLE from the City of Casey makes a very valid argument about the poor standard of reporting in the Berwick News recently (Some ‘Career’, 30 June). I am amazed at the unbalanced reporting by Cam Lucadou-Wells on Casey council’s special budget meeting (Magician No Match For Mayor’s Power, Tuesday 28 June). This was a superficial report on a serious meeting and your reporter chose to completely ignore my submission. Why? No mention was made of some very important facts. 1. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz attempted to control questions and argument about the 2016/17 budget plan by stating “no comments or references” were allowed to be made about council’s budget and the recent Essential Services Commission report which found Casey had the financial capacity to operate within the 2.5 per cent cap and did not need another 0.97 per cent from ratepayers. 2. My submission to council pointed out that Casey council doesn’t have a revenue problem, we have a management problem because our CEO Mike Tyler is more like a recluse than a leader. Many thousands of dollars has been wasted on outsourcing work to consultants which could have been completed by the CEO and his department. Ratepayers’ money was also used irresponsibly to complete a failed rate’s cap variation application to the commission. Why did Mike Tyler approve a $250,000 payment to senior staff when other councils only paid between $10,000 and $40,000 for the same application? 3. The problem I have with Casey’s budget is the business model concealed behind the data. Cr Sam Aziz and CEO Mike Tyler appear to be influenced by the Wall Street business model that council needs to exploit its ratepayers for revenue. 4. There are alternatives to exploiting ratepayers and this includes using resources to achieve productivity offsets, developing ideas and becoming a more innovative council.

5. But to achieve this we need to move away from an anachronistic model of leadership to a more modern parallel, progressive council. This cannot be achieved under the existing CEO Mike Tyler, Mayor Sam Aziz, and a local media which has failed ratepayers again by not providing a balanced coverage of this year’s special budget meeting. Cr Sam Aziz should stand down and Mike Tyler sacked by council. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Vote for deceit WHY does Anthony Byrne, at great expense, send a letter to all residents in his electorate with blatant lies regarding Medicare when I cannot receive a response from emails sent back in May regarding my concerns regarding age care facilities. When I approached his team at the polling booth and questioned them on Medicare, the response was “it will never happen”. Truth and integrity appear to be substituted for deceit and dishonesty to gain votes. Gillian Clegg, Clyde North.

FORTY American editors and journalists visited the News’ Pakenham head office on Friday 1 July. The visitors were delegates at an International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors conference held at the University of Melbourne. Following the two-day conference, the delegates and their partners took a road trip to East Gippsland stopping for morning tea at Star News Group’s headquarters on the way. The visitors toured the News building meeting reporters, advertising representatives and production staff. Regional editor Garry Howe gave them a presentation on the history of the company and its publications. After re-boarding their bus, the delegates then stopped at the Warragul Gazette, a robotic dairy near Sale and a vegetable farm at Lindenow. On Saturday they enjoyed a pie and beer at the local footy at Wy Yung. A MAGISTRATE couldn’t quite believe his ears. In a family violence hearing, the accused requested a couple of things back from the alleged victim. One was his mobile phone, the other was his dog kennel. At the latter, the magistrate at first asked the lawyer to repeat themselves. Then there was the problem of delivering the kennel given the accused wasn’t allowed near the victim or her house. The lawyer suggested the accused picked up the kennel while accompanied by police. ANOTHER accused at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court seemed a little too full of beans. As he sat in the dock, he smiled and winked regularly at his child while his lawyer argued his case. Then when asked to stand, the man starting pacing on the spot - as the multitude of conditions of a full intervention order were read out. Case adjourned, he was led away into the

a car with no registration plates on Tuesday. The car looked like an old taxi that had been painted black in a home job, but had crashed and caused the paint on the driver’s side bumper to scratch off and expose yellow paint. The incident occurred at 2.30pm just before the Cardinia Primary School turn off. The car came out of a side street and decided not to stop causing the journalist to veer off the road to avoid an accident. Keep your eyes peeled on the roads!

Crooked Forest explored in print By GEORGIA WESTGARTH NOBODY knows why the trees in the Crooked Forest in Poland are just that, crooked. But one young entrepreneur is trying to change all that through the help of a children’s book. Jamie Crock, 21, a former Endeavour Hills Maranatha Christian School student wrote a 30-page book aimed at all ages from five years old, in just an hour. But he adds, “it did get edited after that”. “I had the book written in a 50-minute conversation with my mum,” Jamie said after he discovered that the reason behind the trees odd shapes is yet to be answered. “I would love for someone to come back to us with the answer one day,” Jamie said. The law student employed the help of school friend, Grace Fraraccio to illustrate the book. But with the printers and binders booked in, after another project fell through, the duo had to hop to it to ensure copies would hit shelves by deadline. Grace, also a university student studying art, who operates under Dancing Fox Illustrations, brought the inquisitive story to life through water colour paints. It is Grace’s first collaboration on a book. “The story is very whimsical and Jamie wrote it in quite a poetic way, it considers all the different magical possibilities as to why the trees are crooked,” Grace said. “It encourages the reader to connect with an old man who appears throughout the story, so if there was a moral that would be it, to bond with the elderly and ask them about their past and learn from their wisdom. “The book also touches on pon-

A CRANBOURNE tattooist whose home bungalow contained drugs, two sawn-off long-arms, several machetes and a dagger has been put on a two-year community corrections order. Shane Hart, 24, was charged with trafficking after police seized 36.49 grams of ice as well as cannabis and 3.6 grams of amphetamines during the backyard bungalow raid on 2 October, a court heard. Also seized were a sawn-off Winchester rifle, a sawn-off 12-gauge shotgun, cash and drug paraphernalia, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 4 July. Hart, who pleaded guilty to all charges, told police at the time the drugs were for personal use and that he collected knives. Defence lawyer Zarah Garde-Wilson told the court Hart had been originally referred to the Dandenong Drug Court over the offences. That course of action was aborted due to Hart attempting suicide with a gun in February. “He heard voices to shoot himself,” Ms Garde-Wilson said. As a result, Hart was hospitalised for a month and had recently been discharged from rehabilitation, Ms Garde-Wilson said. Hart, who had a “long-standing” schizoid disorder, was exposed to drugs and “extremely bad peer influences” at a tattoo parlour workplace. He later worked as a fully-qualified tattooist at home, where the police raids took place, his lawyer said.

The court was told Hart was receiving drug and mental-health treatment, had moved in with family and started parttime work. He had been drug-free since February, disposed of his phone and closed his Facebook account, the court was told. “All of the people who knew him think he’s dead,” Ms Garde-Wilson said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said the combination of a “significant” quantity of drugs and weapons were of “great concern”. Ms Spencer said she would normally order a “lengthy term of imprisonment” but for Hart’s young age, and lack of relevant priors. “You’ve never been in trouble with this sort of thing before. You got in trouble quickly and deeply.” She said Hart may have been suffering an untreated mental illness at the time of the incident. The suicide attempt may have been a “circuit breaker” for Hart, who showed “strong indicators of a positive rehabilitation”. Ms Spencer said the community corrections order would include treatment and judicial monitoring. She agreed with Ms Garde-Wilson’s submission not to include a work component, given it would bring him into contact with criminals he was trying to dissociate from. Ms Spencer ordered the cash to be forfeited to the State, and the drugs and weapons destroyed. If you need help, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.

average, travel at least 20 kilometres to their place of employment. “Due to the state of the road network and the high levels of congestion faced by people trying to reach work, schools and other essential services during peak periods, our residents can often spend over an hour commuting each way to work. “In addition to the personal costs, such as increased reliance on cars, time away from families, increased childcare costs, there are significant community costs associated with long commutes such as decreased volunteerism and decreased recre-

ational activity, which has a major impact on sports clubs, other community service providers and overall community health.” Lead researcher and ACU professor Takemi Sugiyama said his study would provide a more “comprehensive evidence base to underpin advocacy of active transport options”. “Transport sectors have been trying to promote active travel mainly to reduce congestion, air pollution, and the proliferation of automobile related infrastructure. “Such efforts can be further supported by producing a compelling

body of evidence on the adverse health impacts,” Mr Sugiyama said. “Collaborative research between the health, transport, and planning sectors has considerable potential to promote active travel further and to broaden the base for cardio-metabolic disease prevention initiatives.” The study assessed the driving habits of 2800 adults from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study against health measures including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose and a range of cardio-metabolic risk factors.

CASEY Mayor Sam Aziz has warned residents of the health risks involved with driving for long periods after new research revealed that those who drive more than one hour each day are more susceptible to gaining weight. He said this study was a reminder of the need for a dedicated national infrastructure fund to ease congestion on Casey’s major thoroughfares so residents arrive at their destinations sooner and spend less time in their cars. The Australian Catholic University (ACU) study showed that those who drive one hour or more each day, on average, gain more than two kilograms in weight and are 1.5cm wider around the waist. Those who spent 15 minutes or less in their cars did not show significant signs of weight gain or related health risks. Men were also found to be more likely than women to put on weight due to prolonged time spent behind the wheel. Cr Aziz said Casey had one of the highest levels of car ownership in the state. “Car travel accounts for over 88 per cent of journeys to work,” he said. “Time spent commuting means residents have limited time to prepare quality meals and exercise. “Residents in growth areas, on

STREETS in the south-east could soon be under 24/7 police surveillance as residents with CCTV systems are enlisted to be the eyes and ears of criminal investigators working to drive down the rising rate of aggravated home burglaries and carjackings. Residents in Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong are being encouraged to sign up to a CCTV database, as police ramp up their investigative efforts following a spate of attacks on homes in recent months. Proactive Policing Unit Sergeant Brad Johnstone said the database would be invaluable to investigation, particularly as they work to quash an emerging opportunistic crime trend, where offenders try a series of homes and cars until they find their target. “In our area, the intelligence tells us that in some cases offenders walk the street and attempt multiple houses or garages before they find one that is unlocked or easily accessible,” he said. Recent figures revealed a rise in Casey’s criminal activity of more than 15 per cent on a per capita basis in the past year. But more concerning is the increasingly violent attacks carried out by home invaders, such as the emerging Apex youthgang, known to use weapons on people caught off guard in their own homes.

Police want residents to provide them access to private CCTV system to help solve street crime. New or under-development housing estates are working out to be a hard hit area in the south-east division, according to Leading Senior Constable Frank Bailey. He said investigative and civilian forces were already uniting on the quest to solve and deter crimes, with a number of residents already signing up for CCTV access to police in the few days it has been since the initiative was launched. Home surveillance installations are becoming a growing trend in the region. Leading Sen Const Bailey said home invasion victims often went on to install security, including CCTV, alarms and sensor systems, at their home after their brush with intruders, and the same security precautions were often taken on board by surrounding neighbours. A divisional CCTV data-

base, only accessible to police, is intended to help solve crime faster, and free up investigative resources, according to Sgt Johnstone. “When an incident occurs, we have to door knock every house in the area to identify if there is CCTV available and this takes up vital time,” he said. “If community members register their details with us, when a crime occurs we can contact them straight away and ask for their assistance.” If you’d like to register, send the following details to CPOSD3@police.vic.gov.au: Name, address and contact number. Description of area covered by CCTV. Type of recording system (hard drive, direct to computer, etc). How to copy footage (USB, CD, DVD, etc).

Drug escapee By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ALLEGED drug addict has smashed the front glass doors of Dandenong Magistrates’ Court and attempted to carjack a nearby vehicle in a bid to escape a seven-day jail term. A court heard that Steven Hurley, of City of Casey, walked out of a Dandenong Drug Court hearing after magistrate Tony Parsons jailed him for non-compliance with a drug treatment order on 2 June. Hurley ignored requests by security officers for him to stop, and ran at the glass door exit, smashing the glass and unhinging the door, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 4 July. He “squeezed through the automatic sliding doors, and ran along Lonsdale Street, po-

lice alleged. Hurley then got into the front seat of a southward-bound car, and allegedly told the driver to lock the doors and take him to hospital. As police approached on foot, Hurley allegedly slouched down and told the driver to “f***ing drive off or I’ll cut you. Police deployed pepperspray through a gap in the car’s window. Hurley was arrested and taken to hospital to treat cuts from the glass door. Defence lawyer Adam Maloney said Hurley - who has been in custody since the incident - disputed the nature of the alleged threats, but would plead guilty to criminal damage to the door. The accused would also plead guilty if a false imprisonment charge was downgraded

to a ‘threat to cause injury’ charge, Mr Maloney said. Hurley was also yet to plead to charges over allegedly riding while disqualified on a stolen motorcycle with false plates. Mr Maloney said CCTV footage used to identify Hurley was “not particularly clear. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen agreed the false imprisonment “isn’t made out, and the alternative offence was the “middle ground. Mr Vandersteen, who viewed CCTV footage of the escape, said it appeared Hurley had not really seen the doors when he ran at them. The case was adjourned for further summary-case conferencing. Hurley was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 July.

Teen netted in carjacking crackdown A HAMPTON Park teenager has been charged over one of the armed carjackings in Malvern last month. As part of Operation Cosmas, two teenagers have been arrested in relation to one of the Malvern carjacking’s in June. The 18-year-old from Hampton Park was arrested last week after the execution of a warrant in James Wyman Place on Thursday 30 June. The teen was charged with armed robbery, intentionally and recklessly causing injury, assault-related offences and theft of and from a motor car. He appeared at the Mel-

bourne Magistrates' Court last Thursday where the matter was adjourned for a bail application to be heard at a later date. The arrest follows an armed robbery in Waverley Road where a man was assaulted and his Mercedes stolen, about 3.30am, on Tuesday 21 June. Two other teens, one of whom has been charged and faced a children’s court, have been arrested in relation to the investigation. Inquiries are still on-going in relation to other people believed to be involved in the incident and Victoria Police has escalated its response to the increase in aggravated burglaries and carjacking’s

across the state. A spokesperson from Victoria Police said: “At the start of May we rolled out Operation Cosmas - drawing together investigators under the umbrella of Crime Command. “These teams within each region were allocated additional resources to the operation which will aim to prevent, deter and investigate aggravated burglaries and carjackings. “Day and night patrols are being conducted at high risk locations to prevent offences taking place. Since the operation commenced there have been more than 60 arrests, they said.

Tryst with death

1231819-CB27-16

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS WHO knows how Doveton cyclist Michael Lynch is still alive? The 68-year-old grandfather of 13 partly attributes his survival to his battered $400 bike helmet and - half-jokingly - his “solid” build. He has little memory of the crash on 28 January 2015 that led to an extended stint in hospital and months of rehabilitation. From what bystanders told him, he had been riding straight ahead on Princes Highway, nearing the Jones Street intersection, when he was struck by a Hi-Ace van towing a trailer turning left . Mr Lynch went down and the trailer’s wheels went over him. He was able to give someone his wife’s phone number before he was hospitalised in The Alfred’s trauma section for five days. He suffered a closed head injury with brain contusions, as well as fractured ribs and three broken vertebrae. “I think I could have been killed. Every week you pick up a paper and read about a rider killed ... ” The driver was charged and fined $1000, according to Mr Lynch. The collision was part of a real annus horribilis. Just before Mr Lynch’s crash, his granddaughter died at birth, he had his prostate removed due to cancer and his brother passed away. Afterwards, his heart took a “turn” requiring a quadruple by-pass.

Michael Lynch is on a slow recovery path after his miraculous survival. 156012 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Then there were the complications from the crash - stress, memory loss, depression, trauma, and a painful back that can no longer lift heavy things. Every night, he takes antidepressants to help him sleep, to stop him thinking “stupid things”. The coccyx still “kills me”, stopping him from sitting on a wooden chair for long. Then there’s the brand-new watch smashed in the crash. Mr Lynch says his wife always told him not to wear it while riding. Mr Lynch had been riding a bike since he was 15. He took it up with renewed gusto when he retired from truck driving. He joined Southern Masters riding group and made a lot of mates. But there was also a lot

of vitriol and road rage - not to mention bottles and spit - directed at him by drivers. “I don’t think you’ll ever get people to like cyclists. There’s so many people who hate cyclists.” Mr Lynch is back on the bike, riding in the Masters lower grades, but keeping it to the track. He says there’s also too many long gaps in the off-road bike paths. “It’s hard to ride on the road. Cars drive up the bike lanes in front of you. “Here’s the government trying to encourage people to ride to work. What if you live in Dandenong? How do you ride to Melbourne?”

A TERRIFIED mum and her 14-month-old son were forced to barricade themselves inside a bedroom in their home allegedly stormed by two Cranbourne East women charged with assault and aggravated burglary. Police allege the women, both aged 22, smashed their way into the Pakenham house after failing to coax the woman to let them in. An ongoing spat is to blame for the violent intrusion, according to the victim who was, like her son, described by police to be “terrified and distraught” in the wake of the alleged incident. The women are alleged to have begun banging on the door of the victim’s Ashton Place, Pakenham, home about 7pm on

Sunday 3 July. The victim, aged 23, became extremely fearful for herself and her toddler and decided to barricade herself inside the house. The women continued to bang on the door, wanting to speak to the victim about an ongoing dispute, but on learning she was not going to open the door - the pair allegedly forced the locked front door open. It is unclear how the women got into the home, but police who attended the home after the raid confirmed structural damage had been done to an internal plaster wall. Police said both women allegedly made their way down the hallway leading to the bedroom, attempting to force it open to get to the mum and her

child. During this time, the victim called police. The victim called out to the women, notifying them police were on their way, and they fled. Police said the woman and her 14-month-old son were uninjured during the invasion, but were very shaken up. An investigation into the matter led to the arrest of two 22-year-old Cranbourne East women. They were located at their home, interviewed and charged with aggravated burglary, criminal damage, unlawful assault, assault in company. The pair were bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a filing hearing on Friday 8 July.

DOWNSIZING TO A BIGGER LIFE FROM PAGE 1. HOW and when to downsize is a common dilemma facing over-50s. For many, releasing money tied up in the old house and buying something less expensive to fund retirement is a part of the overall plan. But what to buy is often the problem. Living in a Lifestyle Community is an alternative many people aren’t aware of. At a Lifestyle Community you buy your own home and lease the land on which it sits by a totally secure 90-year lease. Each Lifestyle Community comes with an amazing homeowners clubhouse containing a range of five-star facilities such as a swimming pool, tennis court, gym, bowling green, cinema and more. You’ll live in a secure gated community and you have community managers who take care of the

day-to-day running of things. Another much loved benefit is the opportunity to own a brand new home. “Many of our homeowners have lived in their old family house for decades and are totally refreshed by brand new appliances, stunning interiors and a low-maintenance lifestyle, Lifestyle Communities sales manager Richard Parker said. Lifestyle Communities newest community, Lifestyle Berwick Waters, sold an amazing 19 homes in one day when it was launched in April this year. Lifestyle Officer is over 60 per cent sold and is expected to be full by Christmas. To find out more about lifestyle living visit the south-east display village at 114 Rix Road, Officer, open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm. PARKINSON’S disease doesn’t stand still - but neither does Hallam trailblazer Anne Atkin. Under a warm pink beanie, Ms Atkin is recuperating from a radical operation that wired her brain to an electricity-generating ‘pacemaker’ last month. Dulled only by local anaesthetics during the six-hour procedure, Ms Atkin was awake as drills and screws bore into her skull. “It leaves the dentist drill for dead,” a still shaken Ms Atkin said. Two large frames were screwed on to steady her shaven head and also to help guide the electric wire into both hemispheres of her brain’s subthalamic nucleus. Ms Atkin still sports two 10-centimetre scars on the left and right of her head. The 55 staples have just been removed. Meanwhile, the ‘pacemaker’ - which will emit up to 1.7 volts to both brain hemispheres bulges in front of her left collarbone. It is manually recharged once a week. Ms Atkin said the gruel-

ling procedure has brought her about five years of less medication, less fatigue and more movement until Parkinson’s “rears its ugly head again”. By that time, she hopes more medical and technological breakthroughs will buy her more time or even a long-awaited cure. “You can’t stay the way you are with Parkinson’s.” Initially after the operation, she felt awful - worse than before the surgery. Nauseous and vomiting, she wondered “what have I done”. Then the power was activated 30 days later on 30 June. The electric stimulation stopped her neurones “misfiring” and gave more movement to her slowing, rigidifying limbs. She has also since halved her dopamine-replacement medication as a result. “I feel like I’ve defrosted. “At the moment, I’m terrific but down below there’s Parkinson’s is progressing bit by bit.” Ms Atkin has just put the finishing touches to her book - with her own cartoon illustrations - exploring life before and after the operation. Channel 9 News will air her

operation in coming weeks. Ms Atkin is unsure if she really wants to relive that ordeal. Ms Atkin, who formed the life-changing Painting with Parkinson’s group in Berwick, has just opened her latest joint exhibition in the City of Casey civic centre. Her landscape pastels are of places she’s photographed, capturing dusk and dawn light and surging oceans. Creativity is a major way of retaining quality of life, she says. Ms Atkin is also ambassador for Walk in the Park - the main annual fund-raiser for Parkinson’s research and support in Victoria. Last year was the first time she couldn’t finish the twokilometre walk in central Melbourne. Thanks to her operation, she’s confident she’s got the distance covered this coming August. “The good thing is every cent raised goes to helping people with Parkinson’s.” To support Ms Atkin in the fund-raiser, go to awitpvic-2016.everydayhero.com/au/ anne

Casey’s night sky lit up by car fires By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ARSON continues to plague Casey as a spate of torched stolen cars keeps the trend alight. Police are currently investigating three car fires which occurred in the space of six days throughout the region. The current series of car fires comes in the wake of reports of a 78 per cent increase in arson-related incidents on last year’s crime figures in the Cardinia Shire. The latest crime statistics reveal that Casey experienced a 24 per cent hike in arson-related offences in that same period. The most recent blaze has left a stolen car completely burnt out. The stolen infiniti sedan

Q60 was torched in Laurel Avenue, Doveton, just after midnight in the early hours of Monday 4 July. Witnesses told police they observed a white Ford truck in the vicinity of the stolen car at the time of the blaze. CFA and police attended the scene, and police say two males were observed near the car before it was set alight. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark told The News: “Setting a stolen car on fire is committing a further serious offence”. “We’ve had a few car fires of late, and we pursue all avenues and launch prosecutions whenever possible,” Det Clark said. The second incident, in the

recent string of car fires, occurred in Wilson Street Berwick, about 2am on Wednesday 29 June. But this car was not stolen. The black Toyota station wagon was parked in a car port at the rear of a block of units at the time of the crime. The owner of the car woke up to the sound of the blaze and smell of smoke, and the CFA was called to extinguish the fire. That same day, hours earlier about 6.45pm in a secluded area in Muddy Gates Lane, Clyde, another car was torched on the side of the road. This car was completely burnt out, and police are conducting an investigation.

Now, Yoga is the brainchild of Melise, principal teacher and owner. Her approach to yoga is “you are perfect just as you are!”. “I attended my first yoga class six years ago to find strength in myself after being left feeling alone, lost, with a lack of purpose, unloved and just ugh,” she admitted. With a background in personal training, she brings a functional modern day yogi, anatomically easy to chew style approach to her classes. “I’ve always been interested in the human body and studied Certificates III and IV in Fitness, Effective movement training and TRX suspension training at Personal Training Academy; Fitness business school, introduction to Yoga, Pilates, Tour De Cycle and Body Sculpt Boot Camp at Steiner Leisure Ltd. “I decided to take a job on a cruise ship and onboard I would teach various classes including yoga and meditation.“ She said being able to see the change she could bring in a short time, she decided to investigate yoga more, completing an Advanced Diploma of Yoga at the Australian Yoga Academy.“ She said she had always been attracted to stillness and the bigger questions in life and has always been in touch with her spirit. “Yoga will help you be in touch with yours as you use the yoga space as a stepping stone to the other minutes of your day to move forward in your life,” she said. “Want a stronger sense of direction? Tax Time

Ten tips for first time lodgers ALMOST half a million Australians lodged a tax return for the first time in 2015. The Australian Tax Office knows that the idea of lodging a first tax return can be a bit intimidating that is why it has put together these 10 tips. One - Get a tax file number (TFN) TAX payers do not have to have a TFN, but without one they will have more tax deducted from their pay and they will not be able to lodge a tax return. It might be too late for 2016, but they can always find out how to apply for next tax time by visiting ato.gov.au/tfn. Two - Check if you need to lodge COME tax time use the ATO’s online ‘Do I need to lodge?’ tool that will work it out. Check it out on ato.gov.au:ato.gov. au/Calculators-and-tools/Do-I-need-tolodge-a-tax-return. Wait until the 2016 version is available. Three - Know the options MYTAX is the ATO’s quick, easy, safe and secure online lodgement service. It can be used on any device - smartphone, tablet and computer, when and wherever it suits. Those who do not want to prepare their own tax return can always lodge one using a registered tax agent. Four - Access ATO’s online services TO access online services including myTax create a myGov account and link it to the ATO. To link an account taxpayers can call the ATO on 13 28 61 and press 5 at the prompt to get a unique linking code to verify their account. In myGov, go to the services page and link to the ATO. Select ‘I have a linking code’ and enter the linking code when prompted. Five - Claim work related expenses IT may be possible to claim a tax deduction for expenses related to a job, for example, those who work outdoors can claim a deduction for the cost of a hat

and sunglasses. There are different rules depending on the job but generally three golden rules need to be satisfied: · You must have spent the money yourself and not been reimbursed; · The expense must be related to your work; · You must have a record to prove the expense. To check out the entitlements visit ato.gov.au/deductions. Those with a lot of work-related expenses may want to consider myDeductions. The myDeductions tool in the ATO app is an easy and convenient way for people to keep track of their expenses on the go. MyDeductions users can share their deduction records directly with their agent via the app, or upload their deductions directly to their tax return. To start using myDeductions download the ATO app from Googleplay, the AppStore or the Windows Store. Six - Declare a fair share TAXPAYERS may be part of the sharing economy without knowing it. If they earn money from odd jobs such as transporting passengers or renting out a room or house, it counts as assessable income and they will need to declare it on their tax return. More information on the sharing economy is at ato.gov.au/sharingeconomy. Seven - Fix mistakes as soon as possible THE ATO knows that one of the things people most worry about when completing their own tax return is making a mistake. If you think you have made a mistake or forgot to include something on your tax return, let us know as soon as

possible. We do not like to penalise people for honest mistakes. You can amend your tax return by accessing our online services via your myGov account. If you lodged using a tax agent, all you have to do is contact them. Eight - Patience is a virtue EACH year the ATO receives and matches more than 650 million transactions to the information provided in tax returns. For many people, this means all they have to do is double-check the information we have pre-filled for them, enter any deductions they have and then hit submit. We expect to receive most prefill information by August, which means if you can wait until then, completing your own tax return should be even quicker and easier, and you’ll be far less likely to make a mistake. Nine - Lodge by 31 October THE deadline for lodging your own tax return is 31 October. The important thing to remember if you are planning to use a tax agent is that you have to contact them before the end of October to meet their lodgement dates. If you use a tax agent, it is important to make sure they are registered. Only a registered tax agent can charge a fee for doing your tax return. A list of registered tax agents is available on the Tax Practitioners Board website:tpb.gov.au/TPB/ Finding_and_using_a_practitioner/ Search_the_register/External Link. Ten - Track your progress TAX returns lodged using myTax or a registered tax agent are usually processed within two weeks. You can check the progress of your return using our online services via your myGov account. For more information on lodging your tax return in 2016, visitato.gov.au/firstreturn.

Dire need for foster carers

SHOPPERS were stopped in their tracks when a flash mob of up to 40 people started performing some of Australia’s most loved rock and country songs. Members of the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church had been rehearsing the nine-part musical arrangement for six weeks before taking to Cranbourne Park Shopping centre on Election Day, Saturday 2 July. Reverend Wendy Snook was among the performers on the day, and said it didn’t take long for onlookers to join in. “We were just wearing casual clothes so the public didn’t know who was a part of the flash mob and who wasn’t,” Rev Snook said. The group shocked onlookers with their first chorus from Paul Kelly’s Leaps and Bounds and then leapt into Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy, by Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. The mob included young members who performed choreography to the lyrics and a large choir, which grew with each songthanks to the public, Rev Snook said. The flash mob had no age limitations with the oldest mob member, 78 years old. “Our performance was a part of the Casey Winter Arts Festival and was also a chance for us to raise the profile of the church and our food truck service,” Rev Snook said. “People were genuinely shocked; we had it all organised with the centre and they said the feedback was very positive apart from two complaints.” Other rock anthems performed on the day included Solid Rock by Goanna, Daddy Cool’s Eagle Rock and It’s a long way to the top by AC/DC. Rev Snook said it was fitting to finish the flash mob with, ‘I am Australian’ due to the election count and that it won’t be their last flash mob takeover.

MORE than 6500 children in Victoria are placed in out-of-home care on any given night. Victoria needs at least 300 new foster carers every year to meet the demand for foster care placements. The need for foster carers in the Casey and Cardinia areas is growing, and there are not enough foster carers in the region. There are many types of fostering, ranging from looking after a child for a night or two when you can or the odd weekend. Full time care is also needed for some children and young people who need a home for a few months to a few years. While full time foster care may not suit all lifestyles, new foster carer Jane encourages people to consider applying for part time, emergency or respite care. “Try it, it’s really rewarding. Foster care has opened up a whole new life for me,“ she said. To find out more about becoming a foster carer, contact SalvoCare Eastern on 5662 6400 or go to Facebook and search SalvoCare Eastern Foster Care.

Wastech’s Danish honour Business magazine continues to Grow

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS HALLAM-BASED Wastech Engineering has added an international award to its rapidly filling trophy collection. On 27 June, the recycling manufacturers were presented by Danish Ambassador Borge Petersen and Danish deputy consul general Rikke Scheel Gamborg with the lofty His Royal Highness Prince Heinrik’s Medal of Honour. The award recognises Wastech’s service to trade relations between Denmark and Australia. The ties had been forged between Wastech director Neil Bone and Danish-based company Bramidan chief executive Henrik Dueholm Madsen during a chat at an expo in Melbourne in 2001. Since then Wastech has distributed a growing number of Bramidan’s cardboard balers in a variety of sizes to supermarkets and other businesses in Australia. In that time, both partners have prospered. Mr Madsen returned to Australia for a two-day visit especially for the formal medal presentation. He told Star News he had chosen to partner Wastech 15 years ago on “pure stomach feeling”. “We have grown together. Bramidan is now four to five times bigger. “We have a very big market share in Australia, and (Wastech) are one of our best distributors globally.” Mr Bone said at the time of the first encounter Wastech was in its infancy. “We started with nothing. We were starting behind the pack.” Now Wastech turns over $45 million annually - more than seven times the figure in 2001. Mr Bone said Wastech had compared notes with its Danish partner on such things as quality standards and service networks. Ambassador Petersen said the prestigious medal recognised a company that had achieved excellence in promoting Danish products over a number of years. “It’s something one can be proud of,” Ambassador Petersen said.

Sweet winter treats greeted DIETS were swept aside for serious sweet-toothed sampling at Winter Treats in Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick on 2 July. More than 24 speciality stalls gave away free desserts and snacks under a big marquee as part of the day's gourmet activities.

Among the decadent offerings were cupcakes from Cranbournebased Sargent Sweets, and Christmas cake slices from the Lioness Club of Berwick. There were also demonstrations in making bread and chocolate, and decorating cookies.

Relay team scouting for new participants MONEY means life for these fundraising trailblazers at the Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life. Last year’s event raised more than $67,000 for research and prevention programs of Cancer Council Victoria, and the team hoped to hit $105,000 this year. Committee member Brooke Walford said the local relay events had raised $302,376 in four years, but the team had a more imminent goal in sight. “We’re currently looking for passionate residents to gather their

friends to participate in the Cranbourne-Narre Relay For Life,” Ms Walford said. “We’re also looking for local businesses to provide support through sponsorships or donations.” The next relay will take place at the Casey Field’s Athletics Track over the weekend of Saturday 5 November from 4pm. The Cranbourne-Narre Warren event will highlight special ceremonies, including an honorary lap for survivors and carers.

Miles goes in hard By RUSSELL BENNETT DEVON Meadows’ WGCA premiership chances have received yet another boost with former Beaconsfield star batsman Brad Miles making the switch to Glover Reserve for this season. Miles scored 1047 runs at a shade under 42 with three centuries and six half-centuries over the past two seasons at Aura Vale in the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association (FTGDCA) second division and joins a Panthers batting line-up that also includes fellow new recruit Scott Clark, who was the runaway West Gippsland District division player of the year in season 2015/16. Miles said he was looking forward to a new challenge in a season in which, ironically, his former club Aura Vale will join the WGCA. “I played against Devon Meadows for a long time when I was at Beaconsfield and I’ve got a few good mates here,” he told the Gazette from the Panthers’ home ground late last week. “For me I think it (the move) was just about

having a change of scenery and being able to play alongside a few boys like Mick (Panthers president and seam bowler, Mick Floyd) that I’ve played against a fair bit before. “I see a big future here. We’ll see how we go. “I’ve got my own personal goals that I’d like to achieve but it’s more about the team and winning as many games as we can - to hopefully make the finals and then push from there.” New coach Ash Adams realises the firepower he has at his disposal moving forward, but he knows that talent only takes teams so far. Hard work wins premierships. “I’m pretty lucky to get the opportunity,” he said. “We finished on top last year and probably played an hour of bad cricket and that was the end of our season. It’s a nice job to walk into, this one.” Adams said Darren ‘Camel’ O’Brien would potentially be the one to benefit most from the arrival of the likes of Miles and Clark.

“It just strengthens up the batting list so Camel (Darren O’Brien) isn’t stranded every second week on his own to be honest,” he said. “Last year was my first year here, but by all reports it’s all about Camel so I reckon he’ll be the real winner out of it. He can just go out there and bat instead of having to save situations.” From Floyd’s perspective, he can’t wait to see Miles - a five-time premiership winner at Beaconsfield - in Panthers colours out in the middle. “To lose a semi-final after finishing on top of the ladder last season was pretty disappointing,” he said. “It really highlighted a few areas we had to improve, and batting depth was clearly one of those areas. “By adding Miles and Clark we’ve not only added two extremely talented batsmen, but added proven leaders that know what needs to be done to win premierships.” Devon Meadows will begin pre-season training on Wednesday 10 August.

It’s no sweat as headband hero Ash tops 100 games By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 15 WORKING hard for their headband hero, Casey Cavaliers surged to claim an 88-83 win over Keysborough in Ash Szalek’s 100th Big V clash. Szalek got to run through his banner and celebrate the century milestone on his home court before the side locked horns on Saturday night - a moment he didn’t expect but greatly enjoyed. “It was fantastic - I didn’t know anything about the banner so it was pretty exciting to see that, the big cheer and everything when I was called on,” Szalek said. “Makes all the extra stuff around the club that I do worth it - makes me enjoy my job that much more. “The game itself for me was just like every other game - trying to do my role the best I can - but the appreciation of everyone was a good feeling.” From the first steps of the former Cranbourne Cavaliers Big V program, Szalek has been part of the furniture at Casey Indoor Basketball Stadium and has seen the side evolve and progress. “The whole progress of everything has been phenomenal - five years ago Cranbourne Cavaliers didn’t run our own domestic comp, less than 30 junior rep teams but now everything seems to be on the right track,” Szalek said. “The seniors are great with all three teams, juniors are going well and we’ve got VC teams in most age groups and the ones we don’t were pretty close to getting there.” In a way only a Cavaliers-Cougars clash could unfold, the crosstown rivals reignited their ages-long skirmish in a nail-biter as the visitors stormed back on some tremendous three-point shooting. Casey fanged it out of the blocks, shooting away to a 42-26 lead at the break ... but it left the door ajar for a fightback. He thought the first-half efforts of the group - with Brent Hobba (25

Ash Szalek celebrated his 100th Big V game in style as Casey defeated Keysborough. points), Dean Johnson (16 points, nine rebounds) and Matt Witherden (11 points) leading the way - paled in the second as Keysborough closed the door on power-shooting from Ben Morwood (20 points) from beyond the three-point line. But in the end, the Cavaliers found a way through the worst of the visitors’ challenge as the guards clamped down to record the side’s 13th win of the season. “We had a pretty decent first half did our stuff and had a 15-point lead at the half and we talked about being able

to put them away as it’s something we haven’t been fantastic at,” Szalek said. “But they got on a good streak with their threes - full credit to them - but it was a bit of a letdown from our point of view that we weren’t able to stop that. “But as good teams do - even with them on that hot streak - we were able to maintain a lead and take the win Brent’s (Hobba) shooting was amazing as always - think he dropped 25 - and the composure of players like Ben (Louis) and Mitch (Chapman) week in, week out is good when it’s on the line and get it back onto our page.”

Szalek wanted to thank his wife Alysha for “letting me give up my week to basketball” as well as the junior under-16 girls team and parents for organising his banner, plus the club and association for their support. On top of that he wanted to give a media-fine friendly shout out to everyone on the Cavaliers senior men’s team - coach Stewart Baird, assistant coach Simon Phillips, James Deneefe, Brad Szalek, Dean Johnson, Steve Michalski, Sean Mckinnon, Matt Witherden, Mitch Chapman, Bevan Camilleri, Ben Louis and Brent Hobba.

Picture: SUPPLIED In other Cavaliers results, the junior men cantered past Maccabi 76-60 - via Sam Pike (23 points, 13 rebounds) and Jordan Gookier (11 points, seven rebounds) - while the women had it even easier against Keysborough’s women with a 70-46 victory. Ruchelle McCracken (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Tarryn Wilkin (12 points, 17 rebounds) continued their rampage in the key. Casey men travel to face Keilor on Saturday night, the women are also away at Melbourne Uni and the Youth Men host Western Port on Sunday from 4.30pm.

Marsh stands tall in VFL By JARROD POTTER SHAYLA Marsh is trekking the well-worn path of star Gippsland footballers heading to Cranbourne for a run in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Marsh, 16, from Traralgon, is in the midst of an incredible 2016 on the footy fields across Victoria, and she added another achievement to her well-credentialed season with the VFL debut for the Eagles on Sunday. From representing the Gippsland Power Youth Girls Academy, playing for Vic Country Youth Girls under-18s as well as balancing commitments for Traralgon Maroons, it’s been a flat out year already but Marsh was willing to put another jumper on and make the season stand out even more. While it was a tough outing on VFL match number one lining up against reigning premiers Darebin - Marsh thought the experience was eye-opening and extremely rewarding ... especially when she stood toeto-toe with Melbourne number one draft pick Daisy Pearce at a centre bounce. “It was definitely a bigger step up compared to local Youth Girls - running out on the oval against some of the girls that you idolise,” Marsh said. “The whole way up in the car ride I was so nervous because I knew who we were playing against, but it went fast and I’m not fazed by it when you get to play that quality of football. “When I first went on and went into the middle I was up against Daisy at the start - so the match was a really big step up but I enjoyed every second.” It wasn’t just her VFL debut though, it was her senior women’s football debut. She was given no easy tasks in the inaugural game, but relished the chance to stand alongside another Eagles youngster Kayla Ripari and show what the Youth Girls brigade can do in the midfield.

From Traralgon to Cranbourne's women's team, Shayla Marsh loved her first senior outing in the VFL. 156346 “Probably playing middle with Rippa (Kayla Ripari) we’re the two youngest playing for Cranny that day and that was a highlight and the first half as well - not letting Darebin run away with the ball,” Marsh said. In just her second season of football, the sporting world is opening up for the roaming midfielder, and she’s ready to take on whatever opportunities she can find. She encouraged other Gippsland Youth Girls and women’s footballers to challenge themselves and make the trip out to Casey Fields. “I was nervous but so excited at the same time - it was good as I knew a few of the girls beforehand but it was a good experience, and I’ve learned a heap from it,” Marsh said. “Definitely now, a few other girls who would do it as well Kris (Smith) asked me to come back next week for the Saturday game and I’ll play that, then I might go back to Youth Girls but then it’s up to Kris really. “I would definitely tell them to go to Cranbourne - it’s the

closest from Gippsland and it’s a really good environment to be around, all the girls took me under their wing and made me feel comfortable.” Cranbourne has started spreading its recruiting zone in recent weeks, picking up a few talented Gippsland-region footballers to join the VFL ranks and coach Kris Smith thought Marsh slotted in excellently. “She was good - she didn’t look like a fish out of water,” Smith said. “Won her fair share of footy - good outside mid and a little bit of height about her too. “Didn’t get overwhelmed by the situation and I was really impressed with her. “She rolled along the wings a lot then we threw her into the midfield and played the outside mid - so we were very impressed she could do that.” Marsh’s VFL journey will take her to the other side of Melbourne next week when Cranbourne heads over to face VU Western Spurs on Saturday morning.

VFL - ROUND 13 WAS IT? Wasn’t it? That’s the question a few people have raised after Casey’s two-point win over Richmond, with a controversial mark paid to Angus Scott (two goals) late in the clash. Scott’s grab seemed to bobble out of his arms and hit the deck, but despite the pleas of Richmond’s James Fletcher, the “mark” stood and Scott had no trouble drilling it through the uprights to take the lead back in the dying minutes. That was the tone the entire match took though, as neither side gave an inch throughout an enthralling televised contest. Goal for goal throughout Sunday, Casey stuck its head in front briefly throughout the day but managed to pull clear when it mattered most. Tim Smith (five goals) might have a few AFL recruiters pondering the Casey forward pros-

pect by season’s end as the former Demon continues to play out of his skin in the Scorpions’ colours. In tandem with Liam Hulett (two goals) and Sam Weiderman (one goal) up forward, the high-flying Smith racked up five goals - taking his tally to 18 for 2016 - as the Tigers’ defence stretched to breaking point. Heritier Lumumba returned to the line-up, after a prolonged stint on the sidelines, and flew the flag for the Scorpions when called upon. His experience alongside Jack Grimes, Lynden Dunn and Colin Garland gave the visitors plenty of leaders to look to in the deepest trenches of the contest. The Melbourne connection stepped up and absolutely shone - the VFL level has proven child’s play for the likes of Viv Michie (31 possessions), Jack Grimes (29), Alex NealBullen (27) and Clayton Oliver (24) as they lit up Punt Road Oval.

Battle wins an All Australian By JARROD POTTER ADD another amazing accolade to Josh Battle’s football resume after the high-marking Dandenong Stingray was named All Australian. After a stellar under-18 nationals campaign for Vic Country, Battle, 17, from Berwick, was put in as full forward of the best-of-the-best side - a proving ground for draft-ready talent at season’s end. Battle’s award was a rare highlight in a disappointing campaign for the boys from the bush, who were unable to get a win across the four-game tournament against Vic Metro, South Australia, Western Australia and the combined Allies team. But for Battle, getting the call up after a strong showing - booting 11 goals across the four games - was great reward for his efforts. “It’s a pretty surreal feeling I guess ... Leon Harris rang me and gave me the good news, so I was pretty stoked,” Battle said. “We played Allies on Wednesday and unfortunately went down in that game - not winning a game for the carnival was pretty disappointing but being named in the All Australian team is a pretty significant feeling. “I reckon we were pretty unlucky against Metro - obviously leading by five goals at three-quarter time then to go down by two points probably wasn’t great. “I think to our credit we had a pretty

good, consistent carnival but couldn’t get a win on the board.” The Dandenong Stingray has seen the ups and downs of life in the national under-18s spotlight - after featuring in last year’s unbeaten championshipwinning team to this year’s winless campaign. “Vic Country won the championship last year and there was probably a little bit of pressure on the Vic Country group this year to win it again, but I guess we didn’t really buy into that as much,” Battle said. “I’ve personally taken a lot out of the carnival - I hope it’s not only made me a better footballer, but also a better person so it’s just been a great opportunity to be a part of it.” The friends Battle has made along the way and the experiences shared with long-time team-mates - like Oscar Clavarino - are just as important as the big marks or goals he kicked across the journey. “It’s been really good to play with one of my best mates Oscar,” Battle said. “That was a pretty surreal moment and something I’ll cherish and when me and Clav are a bit older it’s something we can look back on and get to talk about that. “To play along with Pipes (Reece Piper), Jokky (Tom Jok), Polk (Myles Poholke) and Rat (Sammy Fowler) that’s a great moment in my footy career.” For now it’s back to jugging Sting-

rays and Haileybury duties for the heavily scouted draft-prospect and he just wants to finish his schoolboys footy on a high note before bringing his best back to Shepley Oval for the run into the TAC Cup finals and beyond. “I’ll play in the Stingrays heritage game - which will be pretty cool against Oakleigh, then finish the year off at Haileybury,” Battle said. “Play the last three games there and finish it off well there and then back to Stingrays full time. “Obviously go back as leaders there (from Vic Country) at the Stingrays and hopefully lead the group well and go back to the Rays with positive attitudes and finish the year off well there and with the Rays hopefully we can make the finals. “That would be good if I can try to get into the midfield and have a consistent year, finish the year off well, that’s the goal looking forward towards the end of the year. “Just want to keep ticking things off and hopefully by the end of the year I get to live out my dream.” Battle wanted to thank his family and friends for their support and influence over his footy so far. Battle’s Vic Country team-mates Will Brodie and Hugh McCluggage were also selected in the All Australian team.

By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 11 WELL-LAID plans kept Cranbourne alive throughout most of Sunday’s 83-point loss to Darebin. The Eagles clamped down on the Falcons’ forwards - with Kristy Roche taking the tricky task on Darcy Vescio while Hayley Wildes, Bianca Jakobsson and Ash Fennell mopped up across the defensive-50. The plan was to get in Darebin’s face, make the hits count, the tackles hurt and strike back when the time was right. It worked at first - they held the reigning premier to two goals at the half, as the Eagles went in confident of carrying on the ensnarement through the second phase. Striking back was the toughest part of the equation, as Cranbourne took a ton of forward entries but failed to cash any of their hard work from the last line. With the ball constantly rebounding between the half-forward lines, eventually something had to give. You can’t keep Darebin down forever - at least not in recent seasons - as even on its bad days it’s still an extraordinary side and Sunday sadly was no different. Eventually the defensive mesh snapped and Darebin flooded in with Lauren Arnell (three goals) and Georgia Hammond among others cashing in late to run out 12.15 (87) to 0.4 (4) victors. Cranbourne’s heavy focus on defence gave plenty of midfield opportunity to the younger brigade as Kayla Ripari and debutant Shayla Marsh helped move the Eagles out

While it wasn’t a win, it certainly wasn’t a repeat of the round one loss by 197 points as Cranbourne knew it couldn’t bring the same intensity this time around. “We had to bring the fight to them - we talked a lot in the pregame about not being intimidated or overawed or overwhelmed by the situation and that was the focus all day,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said. “We had to take them on, put the pressure on them and get in their face - we did that against Diamond Creek and brought that to the Darebin too. “There’s a lot to like in the whole game - it’s the same old thing where the back end of the third quarter we drop our guard and their forwards have enough class

the run-with role on AFL star Katie Brennan - and mostly kept her out of the action, while he thought Leah Olsen showed the big steps forward she’s taken this season. Cranbourne heads away to VU Western Spurs and Smith thinks this might be the week they get a “Premier” scalp. “Hugely winnable game this week - we might’ve even been in front of them last time and the girls will be looking to turn the tables on them,” Smith said. “We want to beat one of these top six sides from last year.”

Carried away with an emotional win CRANBOURNE coach Darryl Nisbet is carried by his team-mates after his side’s 1986 premiership win over Doveton. The Cranbourne Football Club will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its back-to-back flags with a function this Saturday 9 July, where the Eagles play the Doves at Casey Fields. The players and coaches have been invited, but if there’s anyone out there that has flown under the radar the club would love to hear from you. Contact the Cranbourne Football Club for more details.

Eagles bring Wickers down By DAVID NAGEL SCRATCH the idea that the South East Football Netball League is a one-horse race after Cranbourne gave the previously unbeaten reigning premier Berwick a 53-point lesson at Casey Fields on Saturday. A vintage nine-goal performance from superstar full-forward Marc Holt was the individual highlight as the Eagles out-pressured, outmuscled, and totally out-played the 2015 champions in every facet of the game. The Eagles led by three goals at half time but put the foot down in the second half, booting 11 goals to four to run out convincing winners. Eagles coach Simon Goosey said his side would gain plenty from the win that reversed a two-game losing streak against the Wickers, including a loss in last year’s grand final. “We’ll gain some belief that if we prepare ourselves properly we can match it with any team in the competition,” Goosey said. “Premierships aren’t won in June or July and we’ve still got a long way to go, so we’re not getting

ahead of ourselves, but I was really proud of the effort and the way the boys prepared themselves for the challenge.” Cranbourne’s pressure was enormous, forcing the normally freeflowing Wickers to play stop-start footy. Holt was unstoppable, having three opponents on the day, while midfielders Shaun Marusic, Max Gearon, Mat Fletcher and Ryan Jones had the ball on a string. Mitch Johnson kicked three for the Wickers who had Ben Kearns try his best to lift his side from half forward. Michael Riseley held his own against Holt in a loss that will do the Wickers' premiership hopes no harm at all. Doveton is all but guaranteed a finals berth after an emotion-charged 48-point victory over Pakenham at Robinson Oval. The Doves farewelled one of their great characters and supporters, John ‘Meatloaf’ Calthorpe, hosted a White Ribbon Day Luncheon, and also celebrated the 200th game of current day president Aaron Henwood.

And they celebrated in style too, kicking 12 goals to four after quarter time to secure a crucial four premiership points. Shannon Henwood kicked three in his brother’s milestone match while ruckman Russ Gabriel gave Nick Battle and Lachie Batten first use through the middle of the ground. Defenders Sam Blackwood and Troy Toussaint were terrific for the Lions. Narre Warren full forward Darren Sheen continued his stellar start to the season kicking nine goals in the Magpies' 66-point victory over Tooradin, at Westernport Oval. This one was a shootout from start to finish, the Magpies kicking 26.11 (167) to 16.5 (101). Dean Kelly kicked five and Jarrod Dalton three, while Josh Tonna and Michael Collins were brilliant midfield contributors. For Tooradin, Nathan Page slotted four while Josh Muling and Troy Dolan were solid four-quarter performers. And Officer was made to work hard for its 20-point victory over a

The Kangas had five less scoring shots than Redbacks, who kicked a heart-breaking 0.9 to 2.1 in the second term. The home side made the most of its chances, Ilan Osman kicking three, and heart-and-soul players Ben Tivendale and Matty Clarke kicking two each. Chris Larosa was at his brilliant best around the stoppages while Billy Thomas and Lionel Beniot were key players for the competitive Redbacks.

'Pies face streamrolling Eagles By DAVID NAGEL REIGNING champion Narre Warren will face its biggest challenger on Saturday when Beaconsfield heads to Kalora Park for a round-12 South East Football Netball League showdown. The Magpies are showing signs of being equally as dominant as last year, while the Eagles will hit the court after a six-game winning streak. Both teams have brilliant midcourts. The Magpies have skipper Leigh Taylor steering the ship with Kaela Hughes the Beaconsfield trump card. The Magpies warmed up for this week’s blockbuster clash with a dominant 67-30 victory over Tooradin at Westernport. The unbeaten Magpies had their biggest scare of the season against the Seagulls back in round four, winning 44-43, but were back to their brilliant best on the weekend. Regular playmakers like Kara Hargrave, Chloe Phillips, Erin Clark and Gabby Dwyer were missing, making the Magpies win all the more impressive. Tayla Shannon (GA) and Mel Pansow (GS) combined beautifully for four quarters, while Demi Brettoner was the star performer of the day at wing attack. Ebony Dolan (GD) and Mary McGindle (GK) tried hard to plug the holes for the Seagulls. Cranbourne made it back-to-back wins with a 47-31 victory over Berwick at Casey Fields. The Eagles lost their first three games of the season, but have since won four of their last seven, with a draw against Doveton showing that Donna Wilson and her girls have what it takes to match it with the better teams in the competition. “We’re getting better, we’re getting girls back from injury, they’re enjoying their netball and every-

thing’s pretty positive right now,” Donna said. “The girls are starting to believe that they can win and once they have that belief they can achieve anything.” The first quarter was tight, Cranbourne edging away by three before taking control of the match in the second quarter. The Eagles fired in a 13-7 second term, Ash Honan (C), Steph Ryan (WD) and Nat Sparks (WA) on top through the middle, with Tegan Stahl (GS) and Alanah Hardy (GA) cashing in up front. Tara Cecil (GD) and under-17 Hailey Galpin (GK) complimented that group with sound play at the defensive end of the court. Berwick’s goalers Emma Clarke (GS) and Nicole Westmorland (GA) battled hard against that duo in the attacking ring. Hampton Park bounced back to the winners list with a comfortable 51-41 victory over ROC at Starling Road. This was the first time the Redbacks had returned to the scene of last year’s grand final - and they left on much happier terms this time around. The Redbacks took their time to get warm, but a 13-5 second quarter put the issue beyond doubt. Monalisa Groom (C) continues to flourish through the midcourt, while Brooke Kiely (GS) had a great day out with 40 goals for the winners. Lauren Hargreaves (GS) and Sophie Tracey (WD) had great second halves for the Kangaroos. And finally, Doveton has slotted nicely into third place on the ladder after a 27-goal, 65-38, triumph over Pakenham. The home side was at its freescoring best, rattling on 18 goals to 10 in an explosive second term. Breanne Miller (WD) and Samantha Kappl (GA) were all decisive in that second-quarter move that paved the way for victory. Bec Cox (WD), Sam Jelo (GK) and captain Meaghan Musgrave (C) were sound performers for the Lions.

 Reviews and news…

Audi takes it to the edge By DEREK OGDEN THOUGHTS of a muscle car conjure up a redhot coupe or sedan - certainly not a station wagon - with power to burn. However, there are exceptions to this rule. Take the Audi RS 6 Avant, for example. The hot German wagon has performance in the supercar class with acceleration to 100 km/h from rest in just 3.7 seconds. A top speed of 305 km/h is claimed with the Dynamic Package Plus. The 4.0 V8 TFSI engine’s prodigious power is put to the road via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and the Audi quattro allwheel-drive system. As befitting a pole sitter at the pinnacle of the RS range, the RS 6 Avant comes with a high level of standard equipment, including adaptive air suspension, quattro sports differential and RS sports exhaust, plus driving aids such as head-up display; Audi parking system plus with front, rear and 360 degree view and park assist. It all adds up to an automotive technological tour de force; alas there’s a price to pay - close to a quarter of a million dollars. That’s without on-road costs. Does the RS 6 Avant stack up? A heavily sculpted front with sharp-

edged cut-outs characterises the RS 6 Avant, the ‘Avant’ being the Audi tag for its station wagons, while the remaining features fall into line with standard wagon styling. Setting the Avant apart from its run-of-the-mill siblings is a titanium look finish, with accents on the singleframe grille, front spoiler and air intakes, mirror caps, window surrounds and rear diffuser. New design 21-inch wheels are in keeping with the matt titanium. Innovative Matrix LED headlights light the way without blinding other road users. The vehicle also points the way with safety because dynamic turning indicators front and back achieve maximum effect in low visibility. Topping it all off are a panoramic glass sunroof and automatic tailgate with gesture control. The RS6 wagon’s body has a reasonable drag coefficient of 0.35. Keep in mind that downforce is major part of the equation, taking precedence over slippery economical lines. Cabin furnishings include an Audi Exclusive combination of Alcantara and Valcona leather upholstery highlighted by marcato blue honeycomb stitching with a unique carbon fibre blue twill inlay. The luxury feel extends to the RS leather covered multi-function flatbottom three-spoke sport steering

Model range RS 6 Avant performance 4.0 TFSI quattro tiptronic: $245,400 Dynamic Package: $4900 Dynamic Package Plus: $25,840 Carbon Styling Package: $8500

Audi RS 6 Avant is a station wagon with a load of supercar genes. wheel, while additional leather touches and contrasting stitching can further set this model apart. An exacting standard of presentation is continued with the high-resolution Driver Information System (DIS) between the speedometer and tachometer readouts displaying clear mapbased navigation within the driver’s field of vision. An overboost display is also present in the DIS, and an Audi Drive Select button is situated on the multi-function steering wheel, allowing the driver to dial up the different performance modes on offer. Driving life’s little luxuries extend to digital TV with DAB plus, Bose surround sound with 14 high performance

speakers, 12-channel amplifier, with a total output of 600 Watts. A $12,000 optional Bang & Olufsen Advance Sound System with 15 speakers (including subwoofer) and 15-channel Digital Signal Processing amplifier putting out more than 1200 watts. With V8 turbo design convention thrown out of the window, the stonking 4.0-litre TFSI twin-turbo V8, stumping up 445 kW and 700 Nm (750 Nm on overboost), has the exhaust and turbochargers positioned inside the ‘V’, and intakes on the outside of the engine. The greater thermal efficiency of this layout aids better fuel efficiency and lower emissions (Euro 6 compliant).

Fuel consumption is outstandingly low for such a concept, at just 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres for the Avant - however, see our notes in the Driving section of this report for some real world numbers. As well as a full suite of active and passive safety measures, the RS 6 Avant carries Audi active lane assist and side assist, including Audi pre-sense rear parking system plus with park assist and 360 degree camera, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function and Audi pre-sense plus, including autonomous emergency braking. What a hoot! Stunning engine performance at all times, ultra-hard acceleration with the twin large-diameter tailpipes trumpeting a wonderful exhaust note. Downshift engine blips are always fun so are included for good measure. With Drive Select in Comfort mode, under normal conditions, the car reacted with quick response to driver pedal input, smoothing out any road surface irregularities. Auto mode added further sharpness all round, while Dynamic improved handling at the expense of comfort and Individual, not surprisingly, made a strong case for booking some playtime on your favourite racetrack.
