MORE than 12,000 people flocked to Stanthorpe over the weekend for the Snowflakes in Stanthorpe festival. Stanthorpe Art Gallery director and event spokesperson Nicola Holly hailed the three-day festival as a major success. “Oh my god, it was fantastic,” she enthused. “We had about 12,000 people and we’d estimated 5000 to 6000 so it was fantastic. “I think everyone loved the snow and the ice-skating - they were the big drawcards.” She said the festival had struck a chord with locals and visitors and there seemed to “be a need for a winter festival” to celebrate the town’s cold weather. This year’s festival was jointly run by the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce and the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society however given its success, Ms Holly said plans were afoot to chase “tourism dollars” for next year’s event and make it bigger and better. However she said while the event would be held next year, it would not become an annual event, instead being held turn about with the very popular and long-standing Apple and Grape Festival which was held earlier this year and will be held again in 2018. She said the town did not have the “manpower” to hold

the event every year but it had certainly proved the need and demand for something like this. Ms Holly said the event would also continue to be held around the same time - during the school holidays. Snowflakes in Stanthorpe is a celebration of all things cold, in the coldest town in Queensland. It was originally the brainchild of four energetic young women in 2013. They thought Stanthorpe should build on this reputation and celebrate this climatic phenomenon in a day-long community event to bring visitors and tourists to Stanthorpe. That event took place on 3 July 2013 and included markets along the creek, activities in town and a snow making machine available for kids to have a snowman making competition and throw some snowballs around. An estimated 300 people quickly turned into 3000 showing that the continued fascination Australians have with snow in winter was still apparent. This year the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce and Stanthorpe Agricultural Societies got behind the event to turn it into a festival with plans to grow it in the future. Ms Holly said all the local business owners she had spoken to had reported a successful weekend.

Council names line up

Maranoa defeats a swing By TANIA PHILLIPS WHILE the rest of the country is waiting to see who will be the new Prime Minister - the seat of Maranoa seems to have been secured by Southern Downs-based politician David Littleproud of the Liberal National Party, polling 47.5 per cent on the first preferences. With 72.5 per cent of the votes counted, Mr Littleproud looks set to take over from retiring National MP Bruce Scott. The Liberal National Party candidate has 65.7 per cent of the vote in the preference count ahead of Labor’s Dave Kerrigan with 34.4 per cent. However, Labor recorded a swing of 6.6 per cent. “I’m truly humbled to be given the responsibility of representing the people of Maranoa in Canberra, so of course I’m delighted with the outcome,” Mr Littleproud said yesterday. “There were 119 booths across Maranoa and we manned them all, so I’m grateful to those who volunteered. A big thanks need to also go to my campaign manager Phil Sturgess who worked tirelessly." The new MP will have to wait to find out if his party will be in office or be on the Opposition benches.

“To some extent, I’m using the time to catch up on some sleep and spend some time with my three boys,” he said. “Once I know, I’ll finailse staff and then basically set to work on the priorities that need my attention such as telecommunications, roads and the inland rail. Mr Littleproud said he wasn’t surprised with the swing to Labor. “Not really, the dishonest Medicare campaign Labor ran scared a lot of people particularly the elderly, and it was obvious it was cutting through,” he said.

NAIDOC time NAIDOC Week is being celebrated across the Southern Downs from this week with a wide calendar of events. The week, from 2 to 9 July, celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In keeping with this year’s theme Songlines –- The Living Narrative of Our Nation, the event opened with the Warwick dinner on Saturday night, an event that offered up personal stories from five local elders. Each year there are several events that have become regulars on the Southern Downs NAIDOC calendar, such as the police flag-raising ceremony, combined church service, health services morning teas and community elders morning tea. The organisers invite the whole community to come along and share their own stories of culture from across the world, while enjoying the threecourse smorgasbord dinner. For those interested in art, you can visit the Four Winds Cafe, in Dragon Street, Warwick, to view traditional art or accompany the artist on a tour of the gallery for a personal insight into the stories behind the artwork. The Stanthorpe community is invited to participate in a free lunch, with traditional bush tucker including kangaroo and emu on the menu. Local dance group “Yulu Mob” will perform traditional and contemporary dance. The organisers of every event on the calendar warmly invite Southern Downs residents to join them at these events. Southern Downs mayor Tracy Dobie thanked the NAIDOC Week working group and participating organisations and community groups for the various events that will be held during July. “It’s always great to see government and nongovernment organisations working together to celebrate NAIDOC Week and bringing interesting events to the table. “It is important for us, as a community, to recognise NAIDOC Week and to celebrate together this year’s theme around songlines and narrative,” Cr Dobie said. Cr Dobie strongly encouraged all residents around the region to feel welcome to attend any

Letters Casey’s tips Malcolm in a muddle AS matters now stand, I cannot see how Malcolm Turnbull can retain leadership of the Liberal Party. This means there must be another leader appointed. The field from which a new leader would be appointed should include women. Turnbull has achieved many personal goals. He has amassed a huge fortune; become a politician and Cabinet Minister; and then the ultimate; Prime Minister of Australia. He then took us to an election we did not want. I see him as an empty cardboard box. I don’t know that we could see value in considering a return to Tony Abbott. Unfortunately for Abbott, he exudes perceived arrogance and has little appeal. He would not listen to those who warned him against the intrusion of the unelected Peta Credlin. Turnbull was outmanoeuvred by Shorten who resorted to blatant political dishonesty. If the country returns to a Labor Government it will be because people prefer the misinformation from Shorten and the absolute certainty Australia will be plunged into insurmountable and

impossible debts simply because Labor cannot handle finance. Lou Rowan, Yangan.

Rates rort CAN it be that our new council didn’t get the message! A large part of the reason that so many of the previous council were dumped was the increasing rate burden, so what do we see? Just more of the same! Before moving from Karalee to Warwick we were unhappy that Ipswich rates were higher than those of Brisbane. Imagine then our displeasure at finding our Warwick rates were higher than those of Karalee. If you follow the economists in the financial pages you will know that for the last couple of years pay rises have been almost nonexistent and certainly pensions are not rising at four per cent per year. How then does the council intend to attract new residents and businesses to the region? Derek Liston, Warwick.

THE end of another financial year has been and gone which means it’s time to pull out that shoebox full of receipts and fire up the calculator. To ensure you get more bang for your buck from the tax man, check out these top tips to maximise your tax return this year. 1. Check you are making all the work-related deductions relevant to your profession. Most people are aware that you can claim deductions for home office expenses, work-related travel and professional memberships. But did you know, for example, that people who work outside may be able to claim for their sunglasses and sunscreen. The ATO is very specific about what you can and cannot claim and its website has more than 40 guides to “deductions for specific industries and occupations”, including in the less exotic fields of airline workers, factory workers, builders, cleaners, hairdressers, nurses, police, teachers, IT professionals. 2. Avoid being audited by the Tax Office by carefully considering how you claim your use of electronic devices this year. The ATO is on the ram-

page, having noticed a big increase in people claiming deductions for smartphones, internet, computers and other devices. Remember, you can only claim the proportion of your use of these devices that is work-related. You need to keep records so that if you are audited, you can produce evidence for work use. You’ll need phone records or a four-week diary detailing your work use of the equipment. 3. Consider when you file your tax return. Timing can be key. If you know you’re heading for a tax bill, wait until the last minute to file. Better to have that money in your pocket earning interest until the last minute. Monday 31 October is the deadline for tax returns this year, but if you use an accountant you can often delay this until the following year. Conversely, if you’re due a tax refund, file asap and earn at least three months’ worth of additional interest on that money 4. Where possible you should prepay expenses and delay income beyond June 30. If you’re fortunate enough to own an investment prop-

erty, you would know you can claim a range of costs to reduce your taxable income, like interest paid on the loans, the cost of home improvements and maintenance costs. Get any work due done by 30 June. Conversely, if you have any control over when you are paid money for work you have done, better to receive it after 1 July than just before because you won’t have to pay tax on it for an entire year. 5. If all else fails, hire a tax accountant to give you some advice. Three quarters of Australians use a tax agent each year. There is an upfront cost, but you can claim it as a deduction on next year’s tax return. It’s worth a go at least once to see if there are any deductions you are missing out on. Lastly, if you want to lodge your tax return online remember the popular eTax has now been replaced by myTax. MyTax is said to be an improvement on the previous online tool which has been expanded to allow individuals, sole traders and contractors to lodge online as well as be accessible by smartphone, tablet or computer.

Ready for the challenge Decade of client care

From left are receptionist Cath Hughes, accountant Laura Babington and practice manager Miriam Verney.

KRISTEN Lovett Accounting Services has just completed its 10th year of business which has bought about a period of reflection and assessment on where they have been and where they plan to go. Now with a second office in Kingscliff, enough babies to run a small football team and a professional team of 10 things have changed from the early days at 265 Rouse. There has been significant evolution but the focus has remained the same – build a great team that will focus on their clients and create an impact on their lives. Ten years in they can say this is exactly what they do. KLAS isn’t just about the numbers, it’s about what they have in the ‘think tank’ that can assist clients to reach their goals, how they can simplify business and life and how they see that a client’s ‘small things’ are really the big things. At every task they reflect, as part of their processes, on how they can improve or change ‘this’, which can bring about some great results.

KLAS’s point of difference comes from their mind set and living and breathing the entrepreneurial spirit along with having a strong culture within KLAS. Kristen Lovett said they genuinely cared about their clients, their professional partners and most importantly, their team. “And don’t just take our word for it,” she said. Kristy Harris, of Empowered Kids Occupational Therapy, said: “Starting a new business from scratch is an extremely daunting experience. The support, guidance, encouragement and exceptionally high quality service provided by KLAS has been invaluable”. And Rachel Seivers, of Yamba Caravan 4x4 Centre, said: “We’re so glad we made the switch to KLAS. We have been re-energised by their enthusiasm and innovative ideas. They’ve seen the potential in our business and we feel confident knowing they’re guiding us in the right direction”. “We look forward to the next 10 years and the goals we have, both individually and as a business,” Kristen said. 1233810-CG27-16

CAN lightning strike twice? The ABC is certainly hoping so. Starting Sunday is the new four-part drama Barracuda. This is the second book by award-winning novelist Christos Tsiolkas to be adapted for television. The first? A little thing called The Slap, so you can’t blame Aunty for going again. This time it’s not a suburban backyard but a Melbourne swimming pool that is caught in

the critical gaze of Tsiolkas. Set in Melbourne in 1996, the golden age of Australian swimming is beginning and a scholarship to an exclusive boys’ school brings 16-year-old Danny Kelly one step closer to his ultimate goal - winning Olympic gold. Danny struggles to find his place in the prestigious social circles of the private boys’ school, however under the charge of highly regarded coach Frank Torma and a friendship/ rivalry with team-mate Martin Taylor, Danny is soon on track to become Australia’s youngest

swimming champion, the unstoppable ‘Barracuda’. Soon, everyone has a stake in Danny’s success and as he swims towards gold, he finds himself being drawn into a world where the only thing that matters is winning. When he gets his shot at victory, with all of Australia watching - can the ‘Barracuda’ live up to everyone’s expectations and realise his dream? This is the moving story about obsession, desire, the dizzy heights of success and the terrifying risk of failure. - Tania Phillips

Whacky green political agenda hampering us

★★★★ ★★ STARSCOPE

Casey’s tips

ARIES—March 21-April 20 Romance is thriving, but only if disagreements are settled early on. Business ideas are bright and timing is right for submitting proposals. Older friends benefit from your suggestions. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 An opportunity may open up for launching a long lasting business or romantic relationship, but don’t mix work with pleasure. Adaption proves your most valuable keyword. Travel offers funny surprises.

WHY is it, in a country as well-resourced and privileged as Australia, do we undermine our advantages and opportunities out of complete ignorance, or just dumb politics? We seem only too keen to export our conscience in some sort of perverse pursuit of a whacky green political agenda. It was bought home to me recently, when I walked into a train subway supermarket in the sprawling city of Shanghai – a city with a population of 24 million people, greater than Australia’s. I did so to gain an appreciation of how other people live and even more critically, where and how the locals source their food. My attention was drawn to a large open meat display refrigerator. It contained solely Australian product, labelled “Aussie Beef, Natural and Safe” The natural clean and green advantage of our Australian grown food products are appreciated beyond our own shores. Why is it then, the current Qld Government and the so-called green movement, including the Greens party want to demonise the land management practices of the Queensland farmers and graziers who grow that very food?

GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Communication is the week’s theme. Making requests are unusually simple and mail and email problems are solved at last. Reading between the lines is a must when dealing with matters legal or professional. CANCER—June 22-July 22 This is the week for bartering items, exchanging ideas and sharing commitments. Financial pressures ease after the weekend. You may be very social, but avoid excesses in the food and beverage department. LEO—July 23-August 22 Reactions are not as sharp as you believe, so take added precautions where possible. This weekend finds you especially busy. Evenings are unusually productive. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 The week sees you on local jaunts, especially those of an educational nature. This week has a nostalgic theme, perhaps promoted by a call from an old friend. A platonic friendship is enhanced. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 This is a fine week for shaping long range plans and applying established rules to an all new project. Aloof friends warm up somewhat, but don’t resort to pressure tactics in any relationship. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Your role is now an inspirational one - helping friends out of a rut and serving as a role model to youngsters. A chance of making extra cash could open up by the end of the week. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 This is the week for commencing a diet or launching a large scale project. A loved one is unusually interested in your point of view, especially on matters of travel and children.

State view Lawrence Springborg Southern Downs MP

If you listened to their rhetoric, you would be forgiven for believing that vast tracts of Queensland farmland is little more than a brutalised and pillaged moonscape, drained of its very last vestiges of fertility and life. In actual fact our land is well managed and regulated, hence our fine international reputation. The dishonesty of those aforementioned groups knows no boundaries. In August, the Queensland Parliament will debate appalling legislation, designed to strip farmers of their ability to manage vegetation on their land in order to grow the high quality food and fibre we need to feed and clothe ourselves into the future. As our population expands and the opportuni-

ties increase for us to capitalise on this positive image, these laws will strangle that opportunity. Consequently, demand will increase and supply will be restricted, affecting jobs and driving up prices. Displaying the height of hypocrisy, when this fact is raised with them, the proponents of these laws say they don’t care. Because we can import the food we need. The following point seems to be lost on them. Import our food from countries where they clear-fell their forests and have limited if any control, over the chemicals used, not to mention land management practices far less environmentally friendly than our own? It’s unconscionable to export jobs and opportunities overseas, because we’re being blackmailed by a few inner city green activists, who deliberately bathe themselves in ignorance about the reality of where their food comes from and how it is produced. These people pull the strings of a minority Labor Government, lacking the courage to stand up for the jobs and food security of Queenslanders. I for one will not support these laws.

CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Advice rendered to others, works well for yourself, especially in the realms of romance and career. Festivities on the weekend could play havoc with your diet. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 This is a great time to tie up financial loose ends and collect debts. A VIP wants to promote you - be available. A loved one is surprisingly outspoken on a delicate subject matter.

BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Your bright sense of humour accompanies you wherever you go. You are admired for your warmth and wit, but your indecisiveness frustrates those who love you most. The emphasis is on romance and sentimentality. Nearer the end of this year or next year, could be a bonanza for you.

1229605-ACM22-16

PISCES—February 20-March 20 Down-to-earth responsible people enter your social or professional circle. Creative ventures are fun for their own sake, but don’t seek a moneymaking angle, however. Your love for life is on the upswing.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Connecting people with the sport they love.

Kyrgios cuts sorry figure The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

WE are powering through the rounds at Wimbledon with some big names dropping by the wayside. The Brits are pinning their hopes of good news on Andy Murray who is into the round of 16 along with champion Roger Federer. Many enthusiasts are bleary eyed after sitting through the thwack thwack of matches interrupted of course by what has become the norm, temper tantrums from Australia’s Nick Kyrgios. Surely, I am not the only one hoping Tennis Australia or the governing world body will give this spoilt brat a decent wake up call. His attitude and lack of commitment to the game is an embarrassment. He has been described by one British journalist as behaving “like a petulant little brat”. Hard to argue with that observation. In stark contrast, how exciting was it to see the reception the Iceland National Soccer team received when they returned home after they were bundled out of the Euros by France. Of course, that was after they shocked the world by defeating the English. Surely that sensational “Viking Clap” is set to become a favourite at sporting venues around the world. - The Mexican Wave and Beach ball might be on their way out.

- Casey SHORT NRL ROUND AS we gear up for State of Origin Three, there are only four NRL games in round 18 this weekend. With no game on Thursday night, the Eels and Roosters kick off the round at Pirtek Stadium on Friday night. The Roosters went down in a tough game to the Bulldogs last weekend. Their opponents the Eels also suffered a loss to the competition front runners the Sharks. I think the Roosters can make amends here and bank a much-needed win. Only one game on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Dogs take on the Tigers. The Doggies moved into the top four after their gritty win last weekend and should run away with another win in their game at ANZ stadium against a Tigers outfit missing key players due to Origin. On Sunday, the Sharks face the unpredictable Panthers and will have the job ahead of them with several of their players including Gallen and Wade Graham on Origin duty. There is an opportunity here for the Panthers who will be playing in front of their home crowd. I expect the Panthers to atone for their loss to the Tigers last week in an upset. Panthers captain Matt Moylan will be keen to have a big game after being dropped from the Blues side. Panthers for me. On Monday night, the Cowboys take on the Raiders at home in what is sure to be tough conditions. The Cowboys have coped well through the Origin campaign, but I fancy the chances of the Raiders to topple the reigning premiers in what is sure to be an entertaining game. Wednesday night all attention will turn to Origin as the Maroons look to send Corey Parker out with a clean sweep. Not an easy task, and the Blues have made some significant changes to their line-up and not before time, according to their supporters. Also great to see Gavin Cooper finally get to throw on a Maroon jersey. Queensland will however miss the services of Josh Papalli who has been one of their best this series I bleed Maroon, so I cannot contemplate anything other than a Queensland win; however this game will be a great window to the future of Origin. It should be a tight and exciting game but what more would you expect. CYCLISTS ROLL INTO WARWICK OVER 200 cyclists converged on Warwick last week as stage two of the Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series (QRTS) rolled into town, giving Warwick a little taste of their own Tour de France. A total of 19 men’s teams including Continental team, Kenyan Riders Downunder and eight

The big field lines up for the start of the Men's Time Trial.

Emily Roper had a successful weekend racing in Warwick - here she crosses the finish line in the Women's Criterium event. women’s teams contested the two-day event. Competitors found the conditions in and around Killarney challenging but exciting. Brisbane Camperland’s Emily Roper came into the event holding the leader’s jersey in the women’s event. By the end of racing on Saturday, Roper had the yellow jersey (overall leader), blue jersey (leading young rider) and green jersey (leading sprint rider). Roper the Under 23 Australian time trial champion is undefeated this season and continued her winning form on Sunday with wins in the Criterium and the Team Time Trial along with the members of the Brisbane Camperland team. McDonald's Downunder team member Troy Herfos held the yellow jersey coming in to the Men’s event but had to settle for second place in the opening event, the road race. Winner of the event was Ryan Cavanagh of the Giant Rockhampton team. A total of 105 cyclists took on the 129.6km Men’s event. Cavanagh finished in 2hrs 51mins and 47secs, just 32 seconds of the runnerup, clocking an average speed of 45.3km/h over a challenging course that took cyclists out towards Killarney across to Tannymorel, Emu Vale Yangan and back through Warwick. On Sunday the Men’s Criterium was won by Ryan MacNally and the McDonald's Downunder

team claimed the team time trial on Sunday. The event was considered a great success by both riders and organisers however there were a few who found our chilly Southern Downs mornings a little hard to cope with. COWBOYS YEHAA SEASON CONTINUES THE Warwick Cowboys impressive season continues, and last weekend in their home game against Oakey the Cowboys dominated. The 94-6 score line saw the Cowboys notch up the most points in a game in the TRL this season. In a try fest on Saturday night at Fr Ranger Oval, Matt Marshall helped himself to a trio of tries while his team-mates were queuing up to get over the try line. In an 18-try shellacking of their opponents, six other players scored doubles; Joe Fuimaono, Dan Watson, Dylan Galloway, Brodie Quirk, Brock Croft, Ty Gardiner. Mick Bloomfield also scored a try and added nine conversions to his impressive tally this season. Jamie Abbas and Craig Donn also grabbed a try each and Morgan Taylor gave Mick Bloomfield a break from kicking duties, slotting two conversions. Cowboys Reserve Grade also celebrated a big win, defeating Oakey 74-6 in another tryfest. The Cowboys Reserve grade looked to be flying in round one but hit a few hurdles in the second round and the big win will cement their second placing on the ladder. Captain Josh McIntosh had an outstanding game scoring four tries. The Reserve Grade coach Tim Doyle believes there is further improvement in this side despite the big win. ENJOYING THE CONDITIONS LAST Sunday Sporters enjoyed the crystal clear albeit a little icy conditions on the front nine of the Stanthorpe Golf Course. Mark Lynam had no problems with the frosty conditions and finished with a great round to take the win. Doorley completed the round with the best gross score. Runner-up was Mick Doorley... run downs went to brother Domanic with Peter Goodsir hot in pursuit. Going home happy with a meat tray each were Angelo Doorley and Len Leigh. Sporters note that due to the anticipated heavy frosts in coming weeks the hit off time has been amended to 8.30am - 9am.

Local Sport WATTLES WOES WHILE Highfields celebrated a big win in Round 16 of the TRL competition, their opponents Wattles suffered another significant injury blow when playmaker Jason Wilmot was forced from the field with an injury midway through the first half. Wilmot’s injury is just another blow to the reigning premiers who have had a horror season. They now sit in ninth position on the ladder with only seven rounds left to play before the finals commence. It must be said that despite Wattles injury problems, Highfields played an outstanding game with an excellent completion rate. The win puts them into fourth place on the ladder. Things do not get any easier for Wattles who this weekend host the Warwick Cowboys on Saturday at Platz Oval. The Cowboys who are currently two points behind competition leaders Pittsworth will be keen to bank another win. In last weekend’s Reserve Grade game, Highfields had a 16-10 win while in the Under 18 competition Wattles defeated Border 24-22 in a closer affair. MEN OF LEAGUE THE Men of League are holding a sportsman dinner in the function room of the Clive Berghoffer Stadium in Toowoomba on 22 July. It will be an opportunity to catch one of Rugby League’s greatest talents and greatest characters - guest speaker Tommy Raudonikis. The fun and frivolity kicks off at midday and you can be sure there will be plenty of tales and inside stories from the popular former Kangaroo captain, passionate NSW Blues captain and coach. Tickets are $85 per head and can be obtained from Rick Lang on 0419 212 522 - you may be just lucky enough to secure one of the last seats. BOWL SUCCESS FOR COMBINED SIDE THE combined St Joseph’s / Assumption rugby league side had plenty to smile about after notching up a win 12-4 over the St Columban’s side in the final of the Confraternity Bowl at the annual Confraternity Rugby League competition. The 37th Confraternity carnival was played over four days in Rockhampton and hosted by Cathedral College. This year, 48 teams competed in six divisions. On their way to their second Confraternity Bowl, the combined Joey’s / Assumption side had a good win on day one over St John’s (16-6) but suffered a loss at the hands of Marist Ashgrove. On Day two, the team had a 44-12 win over St Laurence’s after going down 6-0 to St Michael’s in a tight game. They progressed to the final of the Bowl after defeating Marist Emerald 22-4 in the Semi Finals. Assistant coach David Fleming said the combined team had played well and had a good preparation for the Carnival playing in the Darling Downs Open Schoolboys competition in the lead up to Confraternity. Overall winner of the Carnival and winner of the Confraternity Shield was Ignatius Park College. At the close of the carnival, the 2016 QISSRL Representative Team was announced and will be coached by Bob Bell of St Joseph’s School / Assumption College. HISTORIC CARS BRING BACK MEMORIES THE event was popular, the vehicles spectacular

Winners of the Men's Time Trial was the McDonald's Downunder team. and the competition fierce as over 170 vehicles hit the track as the Historic Racing Car Club Qld returned to Morgan Park raceway last weekend. In perfect conditions, drivers put their vehicles through their paces. There was something for every car enthusiast. The Mini Celebration Trophy race was won by Graham Russell. The open wheel cars proved popular and racing was dominated by Chris Farrell driving a Chevron. Farrell set a new historic lap record at Morgan Park. With a big crowd on hand, many from interstate there were plenty of very positive comments about the weekend’s racing with some likening it to the days of Amaroo and Oran Park and a walk down memory lane. TIGERS GET A SCARE THE Tenterfield Tigers added another win to their 2016 season tally, but not before the combined Stanthorpe Texas side gave them an almighty scare in their BRL clash at Sullivan Oval on Sunday. The game originally scheduled for Reg Saunders Oval in Texas was moved to Stanthorpe and an upset looked on the cards as the home side bolted out of the gates and led for much of the game. The final score was 44-30 in the Tigers favour as the superior fitness of the Tenterfield side told over the final stages of the game. While Tenterfield remain at the top of the BRL table, it was a pleasing result for the Stanthorpe Texas side who came away at their previous meeting.

A pack of riders in the Women's event take on the Fitzroy Street corner. The combined side was definitely bolstered by the inclusion of six members of the Border Bushrangers Under 18 side after their earlier game against Wattles. Coach Nathan Shatte is hoping the improved performance will encourage more players to get to training regularly. Stanthorpe Texas travel to Killarney this week for their match against the Cutters. The Cutters will be licking their wounds and looking for a better performance after they were

carved up by the Inglewood Roosters 106-0 on Saturday. The Roosters have another home game this weekend. They host the Wallangarra Rams and the Ramettes will play an exhibition League Tag game against Goondiwindi. The Tigerettes continue to dominate the Ladies League Tag competition, defeating the Stanthorpe Texas ladies side 64-0. The Tigerettes are simply in a league of their own.

On Thursday, Just Us beat KFC and continued their unbeaten run. Don’t know beat 2+2. Players check notice board and calendar, because a lot of social darts, shield games and also Adam and Eve are coming up soon. As well as there has been some date changes. This Saturday we will be having Social Darts. Everyone is welcome to attend. Barbecue lunch will be available.
