Call for action as burglaries mount Surging insurance claims rank Geelong as Victoria’s second worst municipality for burglaries, according to one of the state’s biggest insurers. Geelong claims jumped 17 per cent last year despite burglaries increasing only 2 per cent state-wide, the RACV said. The claims figures mirror an 18 per cent rise in official crime reports during

the March quarter, which prompted Police Minister Lisa Neville to admit that Victoria faced “significant law and order challenges”. The RACV figures also revealed a 24 per cent increase in Surf Coast burglary claims. Burglaries were the RACV’s third highest source of Victorian home insurance claims in 2015, with storm and water damage at the top.

Recent robbery victim and prominent Geelong business operator Richard Furnari called for more police resources, harsher penalties and increased community vigilance. Thieves recently used a stolen ute to ram-raid his Breakwater machinery wholesale business and steal equipment worth up to $14,000, he said. Mr Furnari offered a $5000 reward for information to

Marginal seat ‘obstacle’ to a Henderson ministry Corangamite’s marginal status could prevent returned MP Sarah Henderson rising to a ministerial position in a new Turnbull Government, according to a senior local Liberal. Ms Henderson won a second term at Saturday’s election after defying a national swing against the coalition, with final counting likely to leave her with a mostly unchanged margin near 4 per cent. The former lawyer and ABC TV journalist will be among surviving MPs returning to parliament with at least three ministerial positions as yet undecided after Liberal losses elsewhere. The coalition has previously drawn criticism for its limited number of women on the front bench. But the uncertain future of MPs in marginal seats made them unlikely to win ministries, said Liberal state MP Andrew Katos.
“Sarah’s worked hard and she’s no doubt qualified to move up the tree,” he said. “What makes it difficult is being in a marginal seat. I know that full well because I’m in the same position.” Mr Katos called Ms Henderson a “very good performer”. “It wouldn’t be a bad thing (if she was made a minister) but it’s up to the Prime Minister to determine. It’s his call, should they get the numbers. “But it’s always good to have more women in the ministry, there’s no question about that.” Ms Henderson refused to be drawn on whether she harboured ministerial aspirations. “All I’ll say is that I’m very proud to have been re-elected member for Corangamite.” But she acknowledged sentiments that the coalition needed more women on the front bench.

In Brief Burglary arrests
“I definitely want to see more women in parliament and in senior roles.” Ms Henderson was “quietly confident” the coalition would form a majority government. “The indications today are that we’ll reach 76 seats and we may event reach 77,” she said on Thursday. “I expect we’ll have a fairly good idea of the final outcome by the end of counting tomorrow,” she said. Ms Henderson expected to be returned with a margin just under 4 per cent, almost unchanged on her previous election result. She credited her “strong” local campaign for the result but also acknowledged the Victorian CFA dispute “played a role, without a doubt”. In Corio, Labor MP Richard Marles was returned with a swing of 2.9 per cent, slightly less than the national result.
Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy and a woman, 20, over a series of overnight robberies stretching from Lara to Breakwater. Police alleged the pair broke into a hairdresser, a café, a car wash and a milkbar on Sunday night and Monday morning before their arrests later in the day.
Point possibilities Pt Henry could be retained for industry, used for food production or turned into a tourism destination under seven new options for public discussion, the State Government has announced. The Government’s Moolap Coastal Strategic Framework Plan also raised the possibility of using the site for a residential development or “a small eco-tourism precinct” once Alcoa’s disused aluminium plant was removed.
Parking ban Footy fans driving to Kardinia Park for tonight’s Sydney match will have to park in nearby suburban streets after this week’s heavy rain, the Cats have warned. The rain had put the ground’s unsealed parking spaces off limits, with the club advising patrons to consider public transport instead.
Phone warning Phone scammers are continuing to harass local residents with dodgy calls seeking to defraud them of money, Geelong police have warned. Overseas callers were claiming to offer scratchy-card winnings and others were pretending to be tax office staff with refunds, police said.

Koala call heard at state, council
NUMBER ONE: TAC chief Joe Calafiore launches the 2020 strategy on Wednesday.
TAC to ‘lead world’ from Geelong HQ The Transport Accident Commission has unveiled a “bold new plan“ to lead the world in social insurance from its Geelong headquarters. The strategy would restore Victoria’s status as the global leader in road safety while providing world-leading care for people hurt on the roads, said TAC chief Joe Calafiore. Reduced road trauma and improved client outcomes would be measures of success for the TAC 2020 strategy, he said. “It’s about putting the highest possible value on human life and saying we must do everything we can to keep Victorians safe and help those hurt on the roads to get their lives back on track.” The TAC will benchmark itself against comparable social insurance schemes around the world as part of the strategy. Social insurers are responsible for preventing injuries, compensating people for injury-related losses and assisting with their rehabilitation.
The strategy would include a “digital transformation“ for faster, easier claims processes for people hurt in transport accidents, the TAC said. The agency would also work to strengthen relationships with the health sector and was already working with trauma hospitals and Ambulance Victoria on initiatives to help clients recover. “TAC 2020 is an ambitious strategy but Victorians don’t deserve second best, especially when it comes to their safety and their recovery after an accident,” Mr Calafiore said. TAC 2020’s success would also be assessed on client-focused health measures including returnto-work rates and the extent to which clients could achieve lifestyle objectives. “Victorians have high expectations of the TAC and it’s because of our people that I’m confident that we will deliver for the community,” Mr Calafiore said.

Calls for a koala tourist attraction to rival Phillip Island’s Penguin Parade have been heard at State Government and City Hall. Victorian Tourism Minister John Eren and the chair of Geelong’s council administrators both expressed interest in the idea after it was revealed in last week’s Geelong Indy. Mr Eren, the Member for Lara, recognised the tourism appeal of Victoria’s native animals. “International tourists have Victoria high on the list of destinations to visit, so we’re always looking at ways to keep that steady stream flowing,“ he said. “One of Victoria’s great strengths is our unique wildlife. It attracts visitors from all over the world, who want to see our distinctly Australian animals like kangaroos and koalas. “Our local community is innovative and imaginative when it comes to ventures that boost visitation and create jobs and that’s something we will always encourage.” Dr Kathy Alexander, chair of Geelong’s council administrators, also reacted positively to the koala plan. The You Yangs is a very valuable asset from a tourism point of view, with mountain bikers, bush walkers and naturalists,” she said. “We are keen to work with the owners of the land, Parks Victoria, on any tourism opportunities and will closely follow any developments of a koala initiative.” Tourism operator Janine Duffy presented her koala plan at forum in Lara last week, citing the Penguin Parade as an example. The parade generates tens of millions of dollars annually for the island’s economy, attracting tourists from around the world. Lara could achieve similar results with koalas because it shared Phillip Island’s tourism advan-
tage of proximity to Melbourne, Ms Duffy told the Indy. “There are penguins all over north Tasmania but people don’t go to see them. Lara’s only a 45-minute drive from Melbourne”. Surveys had indicated that 72 per cent of visitors to Australia wanted to see koalas, Ms Duffy said. She wanted land-owners around Lara to plant native trees suitable for expanding the area’s koala population. Ms Duffy said Lara’s struggling koala population was an obstacle to her plan, but it could tap into an oversupply at Cape Otway, where authorities recently undertook culling and relocation programs to prevent further environmental damage from over-grazing. Avalon Airport chief Justin Giddings and local tourism boss Roger Grant both expressed support for Ms Duffy’s idea after attending the Lara forum. Mr Giddings welcomed the potential for an international tourism drawcard on Avalon’s doorstep.

Bisinella quarry proposal Information for the Geelong community Sand is an essential product for the development and building industries. In a growing region like Geelong, large quantities of sand are needed to lay pipes, to construct roads, bridges and drains, and for vital infrastructure projects and new community facilities such as hospitals and schools. The Geelong Planning Scheme encourages the local extraction of natural resources in accordance with acceptable environmental standards. That’s one of the reasons why the sand resource found west of the You Yangs Regional Park is designated for extractive purposes (and also protected long term from incompatible land uses). Bisinella is proposing a new sand quarry in this extractive industries zone, surrounded by existing quarries to the north and the east.
The proposed quarry is 500m to 3kms from various points along the western boundary of the Regional Park. The nearest residence, Wooloomanata homestead, is 1.2kms away. There are currently seven quarries in the immediate area. They have existed for many years. This hasn’t stopped the You Yangs from growing in popularity as an attractive visitor destination. Nor has it discouraged movie production in the area, from The Dressmaker in recent times back to Mad Max in the ‘70s.
Environment protected The 168 hectare Bisinella property is zoned farmland and currently used for grazing. This will continue, with the 82 hectare quarry site to be mined in stages.

Piles of sand being used to lay new pipes along Bacchus Marsh Road, Corio.
The multiple award-winning Grand Lakes Estate, Lara. 6 GEELONG INDY Friday, 8 July, 2016
As sand is extracted, the excavation will be progressively refilled, contoured, replanted and returned to farmland. A widely respected ecological expert has confirmed that the quarry site has no flora and fauna significance. No trees will be removed (other than one dead gum tree). Bisinella Developments has a proud environmental record. We have planted tens of thousands of trees and shrubs over the years in the Lara area and are well known for the high quality of our landscaping and Water Sensitive Urban Design. Our largest residential estate, Grand Lakes, won this year’s national industry Award for Environmental Excellence. We will apply similar standards to protect the environment in and around the quarry site. Hundreds of trees and shrubs will be planted around the extraction area to create a landscaped buffer to the road and our neighbors’ farm. Overland water flows will be diverted around the site and discharged to Wooloomanata, ensuring that environmental flows are maintained for Lascelles Dam and Hovells Creek. Water for quarry operations will come from an existing bore.
No trucks through towns Our truck management plan will restrict truck movements to a single route to and from Bacchus Marsh Road via Forest Road North and Windermere Road. No trucks will go through Little River or Lara. There will be no truck movements after 6pm or before 7am.
Local jobs created Producing sand and other quarry products locally rather than transporting them long distances has clear economic benefits for our region. An independent economic report estimates that the new quarry will generate 65 direct and indirect jobs. Local Mix, a highly reputable local family business, has agreed to operate the quarry. Local Mix has a proven track record as a best practice quarry operator.

The first step in adapting the projections would be a “community engagement process” to develop “viable solutions” for Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, Dr Kathy Alexander said. “It’s important to understand this is a long-term planning tool. While there’s no immediate risk, it makes sense to utilise the best scientific data now so we can minimise impacts in the future.” The report is part of a joint Our Coast project between City Hall, Borough of Queenscliffe, State Government and foreshore management committees. The project seeks to develop planning responses to predicted sea level rises reaching 80cm by 2100. Queenscliffe adopted planning scheme changes in 2010 to deal with predicted sea rises. The changes led to planning restrictions and rate hikes for land at risk of flooding, prompting ratepayers to form a group on behalf of the 600 affected properties. Authorities will conduct a series of “open houses and community workshops” in each of the areas identified at risk of flooding in the Our Coast report. “Sharing the latest information with communities and involving them in the coastal adaptation process is key to developing viable solutions,” Dr Alexander said. “The community engagement process enables us to incorporate community values and priorities into action plans for each of the coastal areas.” The report is available at ourcoast.org.au.

Vaccination opponents have claimed links to adverse long-term health outcomes, including the development of autism, while supporters have pointed out the success of immunisation in preventing or eliminating incidents of deadly diseases.

Beanbags, puppets and books are helping improve immunisation numbers while educating children in a new project at Newcomb. Barwon Health, City Hall and Geelong Regional Library Corporation have joined forces in the initiative at the suburb’s new site for immunisations. The authorities have launched the site as health professionals deal with an outbreak of measles linked to Geelong. The Linking Learning partnership operates above Newcomb Library twice a month, with a librarian engaging children after immunisations. The project uses literacy to build speech and language skills in children from birth to 12 years. The new “one-stop shop” combining maternal child services and a library should boost immunisation rates in Geelong’s eastern suburbs, said Barwon Health. “Being located near the Newcomb Central shops is convenient for parents,” said immunisation service co-ordinator Caroline Poynder. “The maternal and child health nurse is based in the same building, while Newcomb Library also has a Baby Time session every Friday, which parents could visit after immunisation. “Nikki, the children’s and youth services librarian who visits our sessions, is fantastic with the children. They’ve been totally enthralled with her books, puppets and storytelling. “She has a captive audience and is a welcome distraction as the children wait their 15 minutes after vaccination. It’s a great partnership.” Barwon Health said the immunisation service was available in the library’s meeting room from 9.30am to 11.45am on the first and third Friday of each month. The launch of the Newcomb site came as the State Opposition called on the government to lift

Dobber tips lead to druggie busts Police have laid arrests for drug offences in Geelong after a “spike” in tips-offs from the public, according to Crime Stoppers. Calls with drug-related information were up almost 300 per cent during a two-week Dob in a Dealer campaign in the city, the organisation said. Calls involving amphetamines specifically increased 363 per cent, with Crime Stoppers passing on the tips to police for investigation. The campaign, which began on 21 June, was the second in the city after last year’s Dob in a Dealer led to a 110 per cent rise in reports of drug-related activity. Crime Stoppers was rapt with the greater response to this year’s campaign, which focused on the trafficking or manufacture of drugs, especially methamphetamines. “We would like to thank the Geelong community for supporting us in our quest to stamp out ice and other illicit drugs in the region,” said Crime Stoppers Victoria spokesperson Chris Plumridge. “The community’s response to the program during the past two weeks has been significant and the increase in reports shows how determined the community is to put a stop to the flow of illegal substances into their neighbourhoods. “Arrests are made and drug warrants are executed as a result of reports to Crime Stoppers.”
DOB: Crime Stoppers has urged Geelong residents to keep calling with reports of suspicous activity. The campaign would now spread to other parts of the state, Mr Plumridge said. He urged Geelong residents to keep contacting Crime Stoppers with reports of “any suspicious activity”. The service was available “365 days a year”, he said. “Making a report to Crime Stoppers is completely confidential. Every piece of information you provide can help solve crimes and reduce the supply of illicit drugs.”

Volunteers have put disadvantaged Geelong women on their best foot forward to find jobs. The community initiative aimed to help 21 long-term unemployed women “overcome multiple barriers” to finding jobs, said the organisers. Community agency Karingal BacLinks hosted Best Foot Forward to help clients of employment services provider MatchWorks with issues including confidence deficits, financial strains, health issues, limited work histories and inadequate transport. Workshops built skills and confidence, volunteers from Timetabling Solutions and St John of God Pathology acted as mentors and the women enjoyed hair and make-up treatments along with
new outfits from Target. Tips on interviews and professional presentation rounded out the day of assistance. “It’s quite incredible to see the transformation of these women,” said Karingal BacLinks manager Joanne Forssman. “They finish the event with improved selfesteem and newfound confidence in their search for employment. It’s also a great way for them to connect with their community.” MatchWorks service development and projects manager Sue Gladwell praised Best Foot Forward. “Ultimately, we’re supporting these women by increasing their chances of gaining employment.” 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 8 July, 2016

Home plan upset for Spring Creek verse impact” on traffic from the spacing and number of intersections on the Great Ocean Road. Many objectors supported an alternative community plan for Spring Creek, which called for lower densities and main access from Duffields Road. Some objectors also complained that the development’s initially suggested western boundary had grown from one kilometre west of Duffield’s Road to 1.47km. The plan failed to “fulfil any of the criteria that the community of Torquay-Jan Juc were expecting”, said the 3228 Residents Association. “If the development goes ahead in the format that the draft suggests then we have lost an opportunity to provide a remarkable development that would be a bonus for the area, both financially and environmentally.” Developers and Spring Creek land-owners wanted more opportunities for development on the site. Amex Corporation raised concerns including the plan’s “low prescribed average density and mandated minimum lot size”. Reeds Consulting, on behalf of Monnoty Pty Ltd, wanted the size of the precinct’s “conventional allotments” reduced to as small as 350 square metres, which was “in keeping with recent trends and market demands”. Rural Estates, which owns farmland abutting the proposed western boundary of the precinct, wanted the development expanded. The precinct plan “ignored the potential for residential and other development of the remainder of the Spring Creek Valley,” Rural Estates wrote. The shire has abandoned two previous plans to develop Spring Creek amid public opposition. The council tore up plans for a 6000-allotment development in 2009 before abandoning a 1500lot alternative in 2011.

Double Take Don’t cry over spilt milk? Well, it doesn’t even have to leave the glass to start a fracas in the seat of Corangamite apparently. That’s the only conclusion to be drawn from Liberal MP-elect Sarah Henderson failing to consume a pot of milk she held for a post-election photo opportunity at Belmont Hotel this week. The discarded moo juice didn’t go down well with Animal Justice candidate Andy Meddick, who also attended the pub. “No sooner had the camera been packed up, she shot out of there at speed, leaving the milk untouched, to be thrown out,” he posted on social media, along with a crack at dairy industry “cruelty”. Just as well the photo shoot wasn’t at a bakery with pies. The handy blokes of Geelong East Men’s Shed might choose to down tools and pick up iPads after the latest development at Grinter Reserve. City Hall’s switched on free wi-fi around the popular Newcomb community facility after installing a transmitter atop Splashdown, with the shed well in range.

Residents have slammed latest plans for homes at Spring Creek, fearing Great Ocean Road traffic chaos and population pressures from overdevelopment of the farmland site. But developers have also criticised Surf Coast Shire’s proposed Spring Creek Precinct, urging higher building densities and expansion further west. The complaints were included in submissions on the precinct plan ahead of a public hearings session at the shire offices from 4pm Tuesday. The proposed precinct would have acreage properties as a buffer around parts of the site but most residential allotments would range in size from 500 to 600 square metres. The development would also include school and commercial zones along with direct access from the Great Ocean Road. The shire’s proposal for two new sets of traffic lights at Jan Juc drew widespread criticism from residents and community groups concerned about a traffic bottleneck on the Great Ocean Road. The “truly laughable” additions would leave Jan Juc with five sets of lights within two kilometres on the iconic road, said Jan Juc’s Peter Campbell. The flurry of traffic lights would “certainly stand out” to visitors, he warned. Frank O’Shanassy, of Jan Juc, objected to the development’s Great Ocean Road intersections and wanted its density levels scaled down. “This is a poor example of planning for the future community and existing residents of the Surf Coast and surrounding area,” he wrote. Grossman’s Road resident Dale Tepper said the precinct looked similar to Geelong’s Armstrong Creek growth area, threatening “massive infrastructure deficits, chronic traffic problems and overcrowding”. The State Government also raised concerns, with its transport department warning of an “ad-

State reveals options to save low Anglesea River A river reduced to channels and mudflats will greet tourists at Anglesea if authorities stop discharging water from Alcoa’s abandoned mine without supplementary action, a report reveals. Adverse impacts on the community and environment would also emerge as acid sulphate soils upstream increasingly affected the Anglesea River’s alkalinity, the GHD report said. But it ruled out the “no action” option, instead recommending alternatives including continued discharge from the mine, alternative freshwater sources or pumping in seawater. State Government posted the report online before hosting a “community open house” on Thursday to discuss options for the river The river’s future came under doubt after Alcoa closed its upstream mine and power station last year. The mine had pumped around four million litres of ground and pit water into the river daily. The river suffered from acid inflows in recent years, with several mass fish-kill incidents and complaints of damage to tourism trade as visitors were warned to stay away from the water. The State Government continued discharging the mine water to keep the river high last summer but commissioned the GHD study to identify long-term options. GHD found that ceasing the mine discharge could reduce the river level around a metre in summer. Consequently exposed mudflats could then leach acid into the river with various adverse impacts, the report said. “Activation of acid sulphate soils under low water levels over the summer period presents a significant risk to ecological, social and economic assets.” The mine water was mostly ineffective as a buffer against acid inflows but helped prevent

There are five recommended mitigation options “for further assessment”: · Discharging from the mine at a reduced rate, possibly around one million litres daily. · Discharging treated mine pit water. · Freshwater alternatives, such as drain, recycled or potable water. · Pumping in seawater. · And, using a mix of sources including the sea and the mine pit.

The government said it would use feedback from Thursday’s open house in choosing a strategy. “We are working closely with the local Anglesea community to ensure we get the best outcomes for the Anglesea River,” Water Minister Lisa Neville said. “This is also about ensuring the river continues to service the community as well as provide a suitable habitat for native plants and animals. “The community’s input into the future management of the Anglesea River is critical.”

Geelong recorded almost spot-on average temperatures for June. The month finished with an average daily low of 6.7 degrees Celsius and a high of 14.3 degrees Celsius, compared to the latest 30-year figure of 6.4 low and 14.5 high - so, despite much public comment, the temperatures were virtually neither warmer nor colder than normal. Typically for winter, June also recorded many overcast days, a few fogs and a minority of sunshine despite some beautiful sunny weather at times. The month’s highest maximum was 16.9C on the first day of the month, while the lowest Lindsay Smail minimum was 0.7C on 14 June. One frost was recorded, with the lowest maximum temperature of 9.4C on the 24th day of the month - being the coldest June day since 1997. Most of the region, except for a few small pockets, had average or above-average rain for the month. Rain was recorded on 21 days, with the maximum fall delivering 8.6mm to Geelong on 18 June. The urban area finished the month with 48mm, compared to the city’s latest June 30-year average rain of 47.3mm. The region’s surface-water catchments grew slightly to finish the month at 34 per cent of capacity. Among other notable weather events for the month, snow flurries were recorded at Anakie and Warncoort on 24 June. Heavier falls spread right across the Otway ridge the same day with approximately 50mm of snow. June also had two very windy days on the 22nd and the 23rd, with the highest gust recorded at 70km/h at Breakwater’s official weather station for Geelong.

Letters The eagle eye of Gary Oraniuk (Letters, 1 July) detected the reason for Britain’s vote to leave the European Union: a plethora of nanny-state regulations forced on citizens without their choice in the matter. The Brexit vote was also a gloriously democratic strike against the Brits’ own elites: the politicians, pundits and media gurus who demanded they vote ‘Remain’. One of the more economically crippling activities that Britain, as with all European countries, is required to observe is the transformation of power generation from reliable and cheap fuels such as coal and gas to expensive, heavily subsidised, inefficient wind and solar in the pretence of reducing human-induced global warming, one of the worst hoaxes perpetrated on gullible humanity. Yet we see local demands for carbon taxes and to leave coal in the ground to stop the Indians from getting it. Alas, we don’t have Europe to blame for Australia’s stupidity. Tim Saclier Leopold
Roast these turkey ideas Christmas in July is in the mind of many but the locals of Torquay are prepared for a different roasting. The community is appalled by developers that bought land in the Spring Creek Valley of Torquay over the past 10 years. They pretended they were sensitive to unobtrusive, minimal development but are now calling through the objection process for intensive development. The developers are at complete odds with community opinion expressed over the past seven years. Now the developers are going in for the kill with their choice of allotment size. Well done, that man! DN Tomkins, Herne Hill Bouquets to Buck, a security guard at the State Government offices opposite Geelong’s new library and which now open to the public on Saturdays. He passed on what was a most-enjoyable hour’s information about Geelong’s fantastic mural of tiny mosaic tiles by Harold Freedman. Well Worth Viewing, Highton Buckets to fire-fighter union representatives who accosted voters at a booth on Saturday, telling them how to vote. Their bullying union is already on the nose enough without flaunting its outrageous arrogance at the ballot box. For the union’s information, I voted to support the CFA. Voter, Torquay

Plebiscite must allow debate The number of young people seeking counselling for sexual re-orientation is now reported to be in the hundreds. This spike in disturbed children can be attributed to the effect of the Safe Schools program, promoted in our schools by the LGTG community. History shows that societies ultimately reject behaviours contrary to the natural order but many people can meanwhile be damaged. Parents must be aware of the Safe Schools

instruction and the effect it might have on their children. Young minds can be strongly influenced by people in authority. The issue of marriage equality is again being pushed for acceptance without debate. They say debate on the nature of homosexuality would be harmful, so the majority should just do what the minority demands. This issue is important and needs to be examined for its effect on health and social order. A plebiscite must allow rational debate on this issue. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen Street Baptist Church
Lyons comeback sunk One has to laugh at former mayor Darryn Lyons threatening a comeback. He was a dud whose only contribution to this
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 city was to make it the laughing stock of the nation. His most significant policy initiative was the construction of a giant floating Christmas tree, which is unlikely to have created a single fair dinkum long-term job in this city but will continue to cost ratepayers a poultice for years. Geelong is a generous city but it’s hard to believe it has lost all its senses and is silly enough to give Mr Lyons another chance. Michael J Gamble Belmont
We’re in their debt After two elections costing ratepayers about $1.6 million, one mayor lasting only 10 months, deals to garnish votes and popularity, the money-gobbling Christmas tree, and an inept, combative, divided, bungling, indecisive council, we’re $93 million in debt. What a comedy of errors and mismanagement is the City of Greater Geelong’s public-service spend-until-you-drop mentality! The ratepayers are the fall guys paying for councillors’ errors and to clean up their mess. Now we have three administrators running the show part-time on large salaries aiming for another $800,000 mayoral election. De-amalgamate the City, scrap the elected mayor exercise and use private enterprise business brains to breathe the ethos of running at a profit into this local government dinosaur. The City should be forced to stick to its charter of collecting rates, rubbish removal, roads, streets, reserves, parks and gardens, aged, child and health care centres, swimming pools, gyms, by-laws etcetera. Councillors pushing political barrows or riding vested interest hobby horses shouldn’t be tolerated. Call me cynical but I expect the old axiom that the more things change, the more they stay the same to remain the status quo at the City until hell freezes over! W Boyd Geelong West

Bowie neighbour in ‘Ziggy’ tribute By EMILY ROBINSON
FLAMBOYANT: Jeff Duff believes he has Australia's biggest wardrobe of David Bowie costumes.
Bowie fans are in for a treat tomorrow night as singer Jeff Duff presents his own interpretation of David Bowie’s songs in a two-hour show at North Geelong’s Sphinx Hotel. Duff, who believes his life has been “parallel” to Bowie’s, described Bowie Unzipped as a “full on extravaganza”. “It’s theatrical, musical and unpredictable,” he said. The band also features guitarist Jak Housden, from The Whitlams, along with keyboard player Glenn Rhodes and drummer-percussionist Jess Ciampa. In the '90s Duff was often told he was “tall, thin and looked like Bowie from a distance,” so he and his band members created the Ziggy show, he said. “It’s a 10-piece ensemble, so we started a smaller version, Bowie Unzipped and have been doing it for two and a half years,” Duff said. “In the unzipped thing there’s a bit more leeway to misbehave.” Duff said the term “unzipped” allowed the songs to be “exposed a little more than they would normally be”. Asked whether he tried to impersonate Bowie’s performance, Duff said he “wouldn’t try and impersonate anybody”. “I couldn’t even impersonate myself - if I did the Wiggles I’d probably sound like a death metal band,” Duff laughed. Duff knew Bowie personally and believed the star’s death hit him “harder than anybody else in Australia”.
“He was my next door neighbour in Sydney from 1983 to 1992. We had coffee occasionally, he kept pretty low key in Sydney. “It’s an honour for me to perform his songs.” Duff dedicated his newly released tell-all memoir, This Will Explain Everything, to Bowie. “The day after he died I had a concert in my diary I had to do. I went on stage and decided I would read out the dedication - I got half way through and bawled my eyes out.” The singer and cabaret performer had chosen to “live a solo life” so his music had priority, he said. “It’s probably pretty selfish but I just figure my life is about me. “I’ve been arrested on stage for wardrobe malfunctions - I’ve been pretty naughty. “I don’t know what happens to me on stage, I turn into a monster. “I still dress like a lunatic off stage. Molly Meldrum wrote the forward in my book and said the first time he saw me I was wearing a wedding dress - that’s just normal, it’s what I’ve always done.” Asked his favourite Bowie song to perform, Duff said he enjoyed Lazarus. “It’s an emotional song, he must have foreseen his own demise. “We cover all the big hits like Let’s Dance, Space Oddity, and China Girl too. “Usually the audience go wild. Even in conservative halls people get up and start dancing.” Even Duff was unable to predict how his shows would unfold. “No-one can contain me.” As Bowie said: “I don’t know where I’m going from here but I promise it won’t be boring”.

Ghost Stories to spook audience By EMILY ROBINSON It horrified London, petrified Sydney and is set to shock Geelong next week. Promoters describe psychological thriller Ghost Stories as “terrifying" and not recommended for the faint-hearted. Written by masters of macabre Jeremy Dyson (The League of Gentleman) and Andy Nyman (star of Death at a Funeral), Ghost Stories is a combination of live theatre and traditional horror. The UK’s Liverpool Playhouse and Lyric Hammersmith produced the first adaptation before it transferred to London’s West End. The show has since spooked theatregoers in Toronto, Moscow and Sydney. Co-director Peter J. Snee told the Indy the 80-minute horror thriller would take audiences on a “rollercoaster of emotions”. But he declined to reveal details of the plot. “One of Ghost Stories best features is the secret that it holds,” J. Snee said. “Everyone wants to know what the secrets are and why they can’t find information online, it’s a credit to the show, really.” The blood-and-gore-free drama relied on psychological suspense techniques to capture and chill the audience, J. Snee said. “A lot of horror shows these days rely on blood and gore. I think it was a bold decision of the writers to keep blood out of the show completely. “The show relies more on techniques that affect the human psychology. The content contains a lot of jump out of your seat and scream moments.” The reactions of over 500,000 theatre patrons who had seen the show worldwide were mixed but positive, J. Snee said. “In both London and Sydney, we’ve had people leave the show because they’ve found the suspense was too much for them.
GHOSTLY: Dark drama tinged with humour arrives at GPAC next week with Ghost Stories.
“Ultimately, everyone comes out saying they’ve had a great time. There’s lots of comedy throughout the show - comedy and horror sit so comfortably together. “In the early moments of the show, the protagonist asks the audience if they believe in ghosts.” The director described himself “sceptical” of
the reality of ghosts, but said anyone who attended the Geelong show would “come away with a chilling message” regardless of their beliefs. The promoters ratcheted up the tension with a disclaimer: “Ghost Stories contains moments of extreme shock and tension. The play is unsuitable for anyone under the age of 13.
“Promoters advise those of a nervous disposition and pregnant women to carefully consider their decision to attend." Geelong Performing Arts Centre stages Ghost Stories from 8pm on 15 July and at 3pm and 8pm on 16 July.

What’sat on
Most people think of the RSL only around Anzac Day but a potent reminder of its importance arises daily. The Geelong RSL venue, in Barwon Heads Rd, Belmont, supports the region’s veterans and their families by raising much-needed funds. Although the venue becomes an annual focal point, every day is Anzac Day at the RSL. Manager Chris Bennett says the RSL is also breaking down perceptions it’s a seniors-only venue. While the regular steak night on Tuesdays and parmi-and-pot night on Wednesdays are popu-
lar, the venue is much more. As well as a 200-seat main bistro, the RSL has a 110-seat function room with space for 150 at finger-food-style events. “We’re well-suited for private meetings and corporate functions and conferences,” Chris says. “We also have a couple of boardrooms, 16 and eight people apiece, and they’ve been going off. “With our new projectors and tables, we’ve really stepped the game up.” Families think the venue is great with its kids’ playground. Geelong RSL adds to the re-

Local community spirit in the area is also thriving, with all shop owners passionate about the precinct and happy to promote each other’s business. Anyone wanting to be pampered in style is welcome to book an appointment at Black Sparrow Salon. The trendy salon creates high fashion looks and specialises in cutting and colour techniques. Close by lies the new vinyl specialists, Real Music Vinyl. The business has access to over 90,000 titles and loves sourcing special titles for customers. The store is also a one stop shop for all turntable and accessory needs. Opposite Real Music Vinyl is family run homeware store Thule Trading. Cushions, wall art, handmade jewellery, clothing and more are available for purchase. The store also supports the work of emerging designers and artists. Just around the corner, Living On James can be found. Have you wondered what it would be like living in a foreign country? Hosting an international exchange student from another country may just connect you to a foreign country in an unexpected way. You don’t have to leave home to better appreciate the world. Hosting and getting to know someone from a different culture is “a chance to expand your horizons,” said a high school principal whose family has hosted exchange students on their farm. Is it easy to put the experiment to the test? What is needed would be a volunteer host family or two. Southern Cross Cultural Exchange has the students - some amazing French, German, Swedish and Finnish exchange students arriving in mid-August to attend school to live with their volunteer host families. “The best way to know about anything is to find it out yourself,” said Rob Lindsay of not-forprofit Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. We are inviting local families to have a go at gaining a new and different experience together as a family and make terrific international friends for life.” “When you voluntarily host a 15 to 17-yearold exchange student you will not only share interesting cultures but also have the satisfaction of seeing a young person, and even your children, adapt to changes and achieve greater maturity. “The idea is for the overseas exchange student not to be treated like a guest but a member of the family, who is happy to help around the house, go to school perhaps with your children, play sport, join clubs, adapt and learn from a new environment far away from their own home.” Mr Lindsay said exchange students were

Motorists with broken-down vehicles can rely on Victorian Battery Company Geelong to get them up and running again. Jump starts, tyre changes, fuel re-fills and new batteries are just a few of the services the new Geelong-based company offers clients. Business owners Steve and Brian, who believe Geelong was missing a service like this, “took a franchise from the Melbourne Victorian Battery Company”. “We’re based in Geelong and employ Geelong people,” Steve says. “We supply batteries 24 hours a day - so we will go anywhere from Point Cook to Lorne and from Geelong to Ballarat. “It’s a full road side service.” And the best part about Victorian Battery Company Geelong is that clients do not have to be members. “You can just call the number,” Steve says. “Very shortly we will be doing a mobile tyre service - we can come to your house and fit tyres,” Steve says. “There’s no service charge for customers who buy a product from us.” All batteries supplied to customers come with a three-year warranty. “The batteries we carry are the best in Australia,” Steve says. “We will replace it within three years, no questions asked, if it fails.” With just three months of business under its belt, Victorian Battery Company Geelong already has returning customers. “We’ve had several people who we’ve sold batteries to who have rung and said ‘we’ve run out of petrol’,” Steve says. “We are a local and compassionate team who help people out as much as we possibly can.” Victorian Battery Company Geelong is at 16 Bayley Street, Geelong, phone 1300 809 935 or visit victorianbatterycompany.com.au

Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au

SPORT Duncan concedes issues, Swan Jack seeks privacy Geelong’s Mitch Duncan has conceded he needs to improve his consistency after a backhander from Cats legend Cameron Ling last week. The skilled midfielder admitted he needed to win more of his own ball as he adjusted to playing alongside superstar Patrick Dangerfield. “It’s probably not always getting my possessions by receiving the ball (but) getting in there and winning the ball myself with the likes of the other midfield players,” Duncan said this week. Ling had a crack at Geelong players after their shock loss to St Kilda, singling out Duncan and Stephen Motlop. The premiership captain questioned their preparation and complained that “a few players now have had really ordinary games”. The Saints loss has piled additional pressure onto the second-placed Cats as they prepared to take on fourth-placed Sydney in Geelong this Friday night. “They are going to come out firing,” Duncan
said, anticipating hot competition at the stoppages. The Cats would have to “embrace that and make sure we don’t get out-pressured”, he said. Geelong will be refreshed after a week off courtesy of the bye but the Swans will breath fire after losing to the Bulldogs in Sydney by less than a kick last weekend. Complicating matters for the Swans, captain Kieran Jack has been dealing with a public family spat all week as he prepares for his 200th AFL game. The issue emerged this week when his mother used Twitter to complain about Jack barring his parents from the match due to a falling out with his girlfriend, a model and TV producer. “I love (Charlotte) very much and I’m very proud of her,” Jack said at his press conference this week. “I’ve been pretty disappointed with the way the situation has been played out in the public eye.
ADMISSION: Mitch Duncan.
SPLIT: Kieran Jack.
My take on it is pretty clear: it’s a private matter and my wish is for it to stay that way. “What I have learnt through this is that family issues happen but they need to remain private. I’m not going to get caught up in getting into a hesaid-she-said, I think it’s probably an immature approach.”
The wind is up and lines down ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Last week’s north winds helped anglers cast lures for salmon on local surf beaches. Bancoora to 13th Beach and down the Surf Coast produced fish to 2.5kg, with casts of 50m or more the key to beaching reasonable numbers. Corio Bay continued to providing mixed bags. Garfish remained in close to both St Helens and Limeburner’s Point, while boat anglers caught pinkie snapper to 40cm on soft plastics. St Leonards’ whiting fishing picked up, with all the normal haunts producing fish to 40cm. Tenderised squid caught the bigger fish. The entrance to Swan Bay also fished well for whiting on the rising tide. Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally for anglers who could get soft plastics to the bottom of the main cut. Some fish were close to 40cm. The western district’s estuary systems continued producing bream. Trent Schiller was at it again, landing a solid black bream of 35cm on a soft plastic. Re-stocking of Highton’s St Augustine’s Water Hole with yearling rainbow trout provided fun for kids on holidays. Powerbait on lightly weighted running sinker rigs worked well. Michael Evans fished Newlyn Reservoir with Nories Wasaby spoons, taking 48cm, 1.75kg redfin. The crater lakes were hit and miss. Anglers fishing Powerbait from the edges of Lake Bullen Merri caught rainbow trout to 2kg, while others trolling hard-body lures down deep boated Chinook salmon. Further north, Lake Eildon produced plenty of brown trout taken up the Big River arm on slowly trolled Tassie Devils and hard-body lures. Some Murray cod were taken as surprising by-catch. Next week should be worth fishing for salmon along local beaches on incoming tides, while squid should be available from Clifton Springs to Queenscliff. Freshwater fishos should persist with Purrumbete and Bullen Merri.
BANKED: Michael Evans’ Newlyn Reservoir redfin.
Much missed forward pressure costs Warriors the win By JOSIP ZILIC North Geelong Warriors went home with a point after copping a late equaliser in the dying minutes of their clash against Werribee last Sunday. It was a promising performance made up with a dominant midfield performance and determined defending which will be needed again this weekend against Melbourne City who have scored 11 goals in their last three matches. City suffered a 3-2 defeat against Whittlesea last week. Almost snatching a point after being two goals down, they levelled the match with two quick late goals, however Whittlesea scored in the dying seconds to win. Against an improved Werribee the Warriors were composed and created chances with quick ball movement, but a physically intent Werribee
defence were able to do enough to unsettle the forwards. Juso Julardzija played in a less familiar centre midfield role in place of the injured Vito Cichello while Michael Anderson took a familiar wide spot for Rudi Saglam, both having immediate positive impact. Kene Eze also returned to the line-up after several weeks out and his presence kept Werribee’s defence accountable. The Warriors goal came just before the break, when Anderson and Nicholas Jurcic combined well to split the Werribee defence and provide Eze a straight forward tap in to open the ledger. Throughout the second half the Warriors looked settled all over the park except for the forward third where with better decision making they could have punished Werribee several times. The match entered the final minutes and Wer-
ribee pushed for a leveller coming close when a ball sent in by Jon Voulgaris was met by Werribee’s forwards and North’s defence, the resulting ball slipping wide of goal, however skipper Matt Townley came off second best with a large gash on top of his eye forcing him off the park and Anthony Banovac to take his place. Just before full time a free kick given away by Nathan Long from 30 metres out, wide of goal. Voulgaris delivered an in-swinging ball into the box where the clash of bodies all over ran the ball for it to slip past untouched for the equaliser. It goes to show how tight and even the West conference of NPL2 is and how millimetres and seconds tell the tale every week, there were plenty of positives to take away and the upcoming battle versus Melbourne City at Elcho Park will make for a terrific contest.
