AFTER the introduction of two girls’ junior football teams in season 2016, the Montrose Junior Football Club has kicked yet another goal. The girls’ teams will finish this season in style thanks to a $10,000 Holden Home Ground Advantage grant for new uniforms and equipment. The grant reaffirms the club’s status as leading the way in introducing females to the sport in the Eastern Football League. To celebrate their achievements, a footy clinic day was held on Wednesday 6 July, at the club’s home ground. Collingwood Magpies premiership hero Steele Sidebottom and Collingwood Women’s Football operations manager Meg Hutchins were on-hand to lead proceedings. Sidebottom told the junior footballers that all AFL players started out at grassroots clubs like Montrose. His journey started out at Shepparton. “With four older brothers, (and) our back yard used to join up to the footy ground out the back, so footy was massive in our family, he said. “Netball as well, I think mum played over 400 games of netball (and) she dragged us to the footy. “I definitely miss the country feel for football and the social side of it as well. “Seeing so many faces and the kids here ... is great to see. Meanwhile, Ms Hutchins said there were more pathways opening up for female footballers, which wasn’t so much the case when she started playing. Montrose Football Club also runs eight boys football teams, from under-8s through to under-17s, and a disability football clinic for people with intellectual disabilities aged 12 and over. Junior club president Adam Wilkinson said the funds would mean a lot to the club, which was hoping to form three girls’ teams next season. “The money is going to jumpers and everything it takes to get us out onto the field, he said.

Cash for Landcare APPLICATIONS are now open to fund projects proposed by local Landcare networks and community-based natural resource management groups. Grants of up to $30,000 per project are available for Landcare and community-based natural resource organisations, with $250,000 funding from the regional delivery stream of the

Australian Government’s National Landcare Program and $184,000 from the State Government’s Victorian Landcare Grants. In 2015-'16, $452,000 was delivered to 77 local groups for numerous projects in the Port Phillip and Western Port region, including the Yarra Ranges.

Each year, the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA) co-ordinates grants for community groups and volunteer-based organisations, so they can support the important work they undertake. Those interested in applying can visit www.ppvcma.vic.gov. au.

Help save shop By PETER DOUGLAS THE MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Shop in Monbulk is used to providing great service for the community. Now, its operators are asking for a little in return. The popular community shop is in dire need of volunteers and will face difficult decisions if further help isn’t forthcoming. At present, the dedicated volunteers are doing extra to ensure the shop stays open week to week, but operations can’t continue at present levels. MS Community Shops Support Manager, Kerry ReiterLynch, said the store needed further support. “I am absolutely desperate for a minimum of five volun-

teers to help support this shop,” she said. “Sadly, if we cannot recruit more volunteers, we may need to look at reducing the opening times of the shop. “The funds raised by this shop go towards supporting services for people living with multiple sclerosis.” Ms Reiter-Lynch said present volunteers had done an incredible job. “We have people hop, skip and jumping all over the place at the end of each week, I think, ‘we made it’,” she said. “But it’s just not viable with present volunteer levels.” The MS Shop opens weekdays between 7am and 4pm, as well as Saturdays between 9am and 2pm.

The MS Community Shop network comprises 11 shops in Victoria and one in the ACT. There are plenty of highquality goods on offer for the community. That’s not to say volunteers don’t get plenty out of the experience, according to Ms ReiterLynch. “It’s a very happy environment and customers love to chat with our volunteers,” she said. “The role would suit people who are happy, talkative and enjoy engaging with their community.” For more information, or to enquire about volunteering with the MS Shop in Monbulk, contact store manager Julie Piper on (03) 9752 0723.

Grants are available for Landcare and community-based natural resource organisations. 156540

Sexual assault By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS POLICE are asking the public around Lilydale to keep an eye out for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 50-year-old woman in January this year. The Lilydale woman was approached by the man on North Road on Wednesday 27 January while he was collecting hard rubbish.

with olive complexion, dark and grey hair and a short beard. Police have released a computer composite image of what they believe the man looks like. Police are urging anyone who has seen anyone suspicious in the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

After engaging in a conversation, the man then forced the woman into a grey 4WD and drove a short distance before sexually assaulting her. The man was wearing dark overalls at the time of the assault and spoke in broken English with a European accent. The offender is believed to be about 175cm tall, between 50 and 60 years of age, of Southern European appearance

Festival of fun THE Montrose community turned out in force for the town’s eagerly anticipated community festival on Satruday 9 July at the Montrose Reserve Football Ground. There were many fun ac-

tivities for the townsfolk to enjoy, such laser tag and performances. Also available for guests was delicious food, Devonshire teas, and the beer and cider garden.

BELGRAVE police are concerned about the recent spate of pipe-bombs being let off in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Police believe there has been at least four incidents with the most recent occurring early on the morning of Sunday 10 July. Residents close to the Silvan Road area reported hearing explosions on 4 July and again at about 3am on Sunday 10 July with other explosions reported in the area. Olinda Park rangers have located pipe-bomb fragments in the tracks around Silvan Road and warn anyone who comes across suspicious looking items to call police immediately and not to touch them.

Staff in run fun EASTERN Health staff will give fellow colleagues a run for their money when they take part in this year’s Run Melbourne fundraiser event. More than 30 staff and seven teams will participate on the day, with each team identifying a project they would like to see initiated at Eastern Health. These include raising funds which will go towards research grants through to programs which will enhance patient care and comfort. Eastern Health Foundation director Anne Gribbin urged residents to get behind their local hospital staff and donate to a cause they feel strongly about. “Each team has carefully

“The staff feel extremely passionate about their chosen projects and there is healthy competition between each team.” Eastern Health has participating teams from numerous health services, including respiratory services, social work, mental health, critical care and research. Run Melbourne will be held on Sunday, 24 July at Federation Square. The annual event is expected to attract more than 20,000 charitable runners, with participants raising money for a cause of their choice. We’re here for the long term THE recent closure of the Free Press Leader leaves the Mail News Group as the sole media voice for much of the Dandenong Ranges. The Mail News Group is coowned by the Star News Group and North East Media, which are both family owned independent companies. They have staved off challenges from media giants in their heartland, largely because of their commitment to genuine community journalism. Star managing director Paul Thomas said media companies had a strong future at the local level, provided they remained relevant and gave the communities they served

an active voice. Mr Thomas said News Limited and Fairfax before it - struggled to compete with Star’s long footprint in the region. “The reason we are the last man standing on the local media front is that we provide true local news that is not syndicated and that helps to make a difference to the local community,” he said. “We deal with the local issues, provide a platform for people to have their say and aim to help build the communities we serve. “While every company needs to be profitable, that is not our sole aim.

“We are here to help benefit the community.” Mr Thomas cited the recent community campaigns in many of Star’s mastheads as recent examples of the level of engagement required of a genuinely committed media outlet. Campaigns such as those that centred around family violence and attracting local infrastructure under the ‘Fund Our Future’ banner. He said Leader failed party because it stripped editorial resources. “They (Leader) didn’t have the people on the ground,” he explained. “We have people who are not only dedicated to the community,

but actively involved in it. “We live and breathe our area and we’re not a multi-national. “We don’t have someone on the other side of the world pulling the strings.” Star is a family owned independent media company and Mr Thomas is the fourth generation of his family to run the company. The Mail News Group publishes five mastheads which circulate throughout the Yarra Ranges. “We are now the only local independent voice and we are here for the long term,” Mr Thomas said.

Our campaign ‘stupid’: Wood By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS and PETER DOUGLAS LA TROBE sitting MP, Jason Wood, who is likely to narrowly win his seat, has dumped on the Coalition’s ‘stupid’ federal election campaign. Mr Wood was ‘quietly confident’ of victory with an almost 2000-vote lead on the ALP rival Simon Curtis with more than 75 per cent of votes counted on Monday, 11 July. Postal and pre-poll votes will continue to be counted. “History tells us that postal votes in country seats go more our way,” he said. Mr Wood said on 6 July he thought the Coalition should have done more to counter Labor’s Medicare-privatisation “scare campaign”, and run harder on “unions and law-and-order”. “We ran a positive campaign on the economy, technology, innovation ... a scare campaign kills a positive campaign every day,” he said. “We need to be more focused on families and their concerns, and countering scare campaigns.” Mr Wood said some of the government’s controversial superannuation changes needed to be changed, as did the way Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s office operated in campaigns. Mr Wood said the bucket of money for election commitments was controlled centrally in Mr Turnbull’s office, but government ministers should have had more say. “I was dark that up at the Prime Minister’s office, it was such a closed shop,” he said. “That’s something the office has to change.” Mr Wood praised ‘fantastic’ people in the office, who backed his call for a ban on cosmetic testing on animals.

Pictured on election day at Timbarra P-9 College is Jason Wood with his wife, Judy Cheung, and daughter, Jasmine. He said there was ‘no leadership talk’ about Mr Turnbull’s position. He said Mr Turnbull has “my full support” and he just wanted “our gov-

ernment to do well”. “I’ve known him since 2004,” he said. “He knows I’ll raise this stupid campaign with him and I’ll be de-

manding changes. “I’ve no doubt, knowing him, that when we get back, things will change. “Things have to change.

“I’ll be saying the same thing to all my colleagues. “It sadly needs to be made public, otherwise nothing will change.”

Community cashes in COCKATOO Country Market has offered its first round of community grants at its monthly market. Nearly $2500 in grants were handed out to community groups, which included the Cockatoo Hills Men’s Shed, Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre, Cockatoo NILS Program, Cockatoo Tennis Club and Hillscene Live. All groups are either in the planning stage or have important projects underway. Market chairperson Tanya Burmeister said the market was now in its second year and proud to be assisting the community. “The next round of grants will be of a similar amount, and again will be offered to another round of groups at the next mar-

ket (on Saturday 6 August),” she said. “The market is going from strength to strength, still maintaining its unique criteria of supporting local business and community groups, farmers’ fresh produce and local artisans wherever possible.” Ms Burmeister said the market had recently introduced a new theme to the market, which includes vintage and collectable. Local community groups are welcome to apply for a grant through emailing cockatoocountrymarket@outlook.com. The market is on the first Saturday of every month, from 8.30am to 1pm. The next market is on Saturday 6 August.

Rate rise hits the cap, but won’t be pushed further By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS YARRA Ranges Council voted to unanimously to adopt its 2016-17 budget at a regular council meeting on Tuesday 28 June. It will see rates rise by 2.5 per cent in 2016/17, the limit set by the State Government’s rate cap. The budget details $38.4 million in new capital works and infrastructure over the new financial year in addition to its $178 million operating budget. At the meeting, councillor Andrew

Letter Story reflective of society THANKYOU Luke for sharing your experiences of living with homophobia, anxiety, bullying and drugs. You raise so many issues in the article in the ‘Mail’ (A tale of ice, Tuesday, 5 July) and congratulations for doing so. You say so much about the state of our society and our reticence to embrace diversity. I hope you are happier in your life now and feel more accepted than you did. On a national note, our politicians should just vote on legalising gay marriage and not drag the issue through a plebiscite, which in my mind would provide an opportunity for more homophobia and bullying. All strength to you, Luke! Sue Clisby, The Patch.

“We are spending more on projects and taking less from ratepayers at the same time.” Yarra Ranges mayor Jason Callanan said this budget and long-term financial plan will allow the council to achieve financial goals that will assist everyone in the Yarra Ranges Shire. “With this budget, council plan and long-term financial plan, we will be on track to achieve savings despite declining revenue streams, while delivering the same high level of capital works,” Cr Callanan said.

Witlox said the 2016/17 council budget contained cost saving measures that all councillors could all be proud of. “I’m very pleased with this budget,” he said. “We have a $163 million reduction in rate revenue which means $163 million are to stay in the pockets of rate payers. “The numbers for capital expenditure for this period have increased, we were going to spend $341 million but now its $409 million.

AFTER many years in the health industry, Sally Williams decided a change of direction was needed and set to incorporate a lifelong love of dogs with a small business. Mutts on the Move was born in 2013 and is dedicated to providing a high quality and reliable service for dog owners, helping them balance a busy lifestyle with the needs of their animals. Working initially on her own she has built the business over the past three years to include three part-time walkers who are all keen dog lovers and are devoted to treating the dogs like their own. They provide a dog-walking and petminding pop-in service in the eastern suburbs and Dandenong Ranges; from Lilydale to Ringwood, and Warrandyte to Belgrave. Dogs are picked up from home and taken to a dog friendly park or are walked around local streets for 30 or 60 minutes. They can also give social hounds a group adventure with others; to chase balls and have a good run. They then return them home happy and tired. Healthy treats and fresh water are also in plentiful supply. As most pets will prefer to remain in their own environment when their owners go away, their pet-minding service will enable them to remain at home with their favourite bed, toys and food. They will be fed, walked and given lots of love in their owner’s absence. For more information, go to www. muttsonthemove.com.au or visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ mutts101.

Heavy seven on the metal HEAVY metal band Barbarion is preparing to play at Belgrave’s Sooki Lounge on Friday 29 July. The seven members of the Australian band came together in 2007 and started performing in 2008. Since then, Barbarion’s extraordinary stage shows and catchy songs have been steadily winning over Australian audiences. Barbarion always delivers a highly entertaining and theatrical performance. The shows incorporate fire, smoke, skulls,

weapons and other battle and heavy metal themed props. On top of this, each member brings to the stage their own barbaric identity, inspired by barbarians from various times and places - leather, flesh, fur, war paint, helmets, drinking horns - it’s all there and the resulting spectacle is not soon forgotten. The band comprises two larger-than-life frontmen, three hairy guitarists, bass and drums. The music appeals to metal and non-metal fans alike. It is entertaining and uplifting, and draws from traditional champions of metal and hard rock such

as Iron Maiden, Manowar, Megadeth and AC/DC. Notable moments in Barbarion’s recent history include: Playing the Big Day Out, Meredith Music Festival and Boogie Music Festival in 2011; Supporting international touring bands Alestorm (2013), Andrew WK (2011), Pulled Apart by Horses (2011) and Jeff the Brotherhood (2010);

· ·

on the Australian music trivia show · Appearing Spics and Specs in 2012; its most comprehensive album to · Releasing date, Ram the World, in 2013 and, its first successful tour of Europe · Completing in 2013. Barbarion has played many successful club shows in Australia and has built a reputation for entertaining, participative performances.

Barbarion is preparing to rock local audience with its intense stage performance.

Big friendly tenderness The BFG (PG) Starring: Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill and Penelope Wilton THE BFG is just as entertaining as previous Roald Dahl adaptations such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. Based on Dahl’s children’s novel, The BFG follows Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), a young orphan who is whisked away by the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance), a kind-hearted runt among his man-eating brethren. Steven Spielberg is an incredibly versatile filmmaker, and has family friendly tales

like this down to almost a science. The BFG is a whimsical, deeply moving film about courage and unlikely friendship, and has beautiful imagery and just enough intrigue and danger to generate suspense (but not so much that it would frighten youngsters in the audience). Barnhill is already an extremely charismatic actress, and she and Rylance play off each other beautifully. The humour contains a lot of clever slapstick, and the film delves with surprising detail into the ecosystem of dreams, which the BFG har-

vests and delivers to sleeping people. My only qualm with The BFG is its CGI. While there can be a very reasonable trade-off between expressiveness and realism, and the giant’s expressions and mannerisms are remarkably emotive and fluid, the CGI still doesn’t look real alongside real, physical actors like Barnhill or Penelope Wilton (as the Queen). The CGI for the orcs in Warcraft looked much better. The BFG is a family film of unusual depth and genuine tenderness. - SETH HYNES

Two top spots up for grabs By CAMERON HUTCHISON IT’S a three-way tie at the top end of the Division 1 ladder. After this coming weekend, there will be two fighting for top spot as Wandin play Olinda Ferny Creek and Healesville take on Monbulk and should come away winners. Woori Yallock and Upwey-Tecoma are vying for consolidation in the five and battle it out next week. Division 2 has seen some major position changes after Saturday’s games. Yarra Glen and Kinglake have given themselves a four-point break on the opposition sharing top spot. Seville’s loss to Kinglake has dropped them to sixth and sitting on 28 points with Yea in fifth. Alexandra jumped to third after their ugly win against Yarra Junction but have Gembrook-Cockatoo on the same points. Division 1 Seniors Football Upwey Tecoma 16.14 (110) d Belgrave 12.10 (82) Upwey-Tecoma took back the Sticky Harris Trophy after a comefrom- behind win on Saturday. Belgrave got off to a really good start, kicking 5.2 to 3.3 in the first and probably had Upwey a bit shocked. Upwey kicked into gear and kicked 3.6 to 1.3 to take a slim lead of four points into the main break. Another change in the lead came in the third when Belgrave kicked 4.3 to 3.3 to get in front by six points. Upwey finally got their game going halfway through the last and ran all over Belgrave, kicking 7.2 to 2.2 to come away with a solid win. Upwey are now two games clear in fifth spot. Upwey-Tecoma Best: B. Oates, J. Hackett (4 goals), D. Sloane, D. Devers, K. Townsend-Finlay, T. Robinson (4 goals) Belgrave Best: M. Johnson (3 goals), E. Clasby (3 goals), C. Power (2 goals), T. Stubley (1 goal), N. Somervaille, M. Brown Division 2 Seniors Football Kinglake 17.11 (113) d Seville 13.8 (86) Kinglake’s come-from-behind win has pushed Seville into sixth spot on the ladder and left them with some sole searching to do. Kinglake held a slim lead of four points at quarter time and the game was on. Seville rallied in the second, kicking 4.1 to 2.6 to go in at half-time in front by three points. Indirect kicking might have come back to bite Kinglake and they would need to address it at half-time. An even third quarter saw Seville’s lead increase to four points, and it was going to be a cracker of a last quarter. Kinglake showed why they are sitting in top spot on the ladder, running all over Seville in the last, kicking 8.2 to 3.1 in the last to secure a 27-point win. Kinglake Best: A. Whelan, B. Tampion (2 goals), R. Mallison (2 goals), W. Graf, J. Nixon (7 goals), L. Forsyth (4 goals) Seville Best: A. Knight, D. Groen, A. Mammoliti, J. Nolan (1 goal), J. Bourke-Finn, N. O’Keefe (5 goals) Yarra Glen 21.12 (138) d Powelltown 20.11(131) Historically, Powelltown has always been a tough opposition for Yarra Glen and Saturday was no different. Yarra Glen got off to a solid start, kicking 6.4 to 5.2 taking an eight-point lead into quarter time. Powelltown

Belgrave performed well during the opening two quarters. 156627 outscored Yarra Glen in the second and reduced the lead to three points at the main break. A combined 14-goal third quarter gave Yarra Glen some breathing space going into the last with a 17-point lead. Goals were certainly coming from every avenue in the forward line. Powelltown had eight goal kickers with Luke Miller kicking six while Yarra Glen had nine contributors to their goals. The last quarter continued at the same frenetic pace, but Powelltown possibly let this one get away from them by kicking 5.5 to Yarra Glen’s 3.1, but Yarra Glen held tough and came away with a heart stopping seven-point win. Yarra Glen Best: W. Kristelly, D. Hurley (1 goal), M. Ashton (2 goals), K. Hudson, A. Moate, B. Ashton (3 goals) Powelltown Best: R. Johnson (2 goals), L. Miller (6 goals), M. McLaughlin (3 goals), D. Edgeworth (4 goals), J. Moore, W. Dore Yea 19.11 (125) d Thornton Eildon 5.6 (36) Yea now sit fifth on percentage after a good win over Thornton-Eildon on Saturday. Yea got a jump on Thornton in the first and to a 39-point lead into the second quarter. Thornton just had no answers to stem the run of Yea, but did manage to hold them to 2.5 while they kicked 1.3. The lead had extended to 47 points at half-time and it was going to be tough for Thornton Eildon to catch up. Thornton held Yea again to another low-scoring quarter in the third, but could not make any inroads to their lead. Yea got their game going in the last and ran away with a big win kicking 8.1 to two goals in the last to defeat Thornton Eildon by 89 points. Yea Best: B. Cunningham (2 goals), R. Aldous (2 goals), D. Evans, A.

Hobbs (5 goals), E. Neilson, P. Evans Thornton-Eildon Best: Z. King (1 goal), A. Reddan (1 goal), B. Musgrove, D. Creed, J. Strachan, C. Ruhl (1 goal) Alexandra 9.23 (77) d Yarra Junction 7.3 (45) Alexandra got away with a win on Saturday after kicking an amazing 23 behinds. Alexandra held Yarra Junction goalless in the first and kicked 4.4 themselves to take a lead of 27 points into the second quarter. Yarra Junction could not capitalise on Alexandra’s indirect kicking in the second with 3.2 to 3.9 increased the lead to 34 points, but it should have been a lot more at halftime. Wayward kicking still plagued Alexandra in the third kicking another 2.6 to three straight. Yarra Junction could not peg back the lead, but did hold Alexandra goalless in the last. Some goal kicking practice is definitely on the training agenda for this week. Alexandra Best: B. Wallace, B. Norris (2 goals), W. Goonan, S. Woollard (1 goal), N. Dundas, S. Motoring Take care on black ice AS WE find ourselves in another cold winter, drivers are urged to be extra vigilant of black ice on the state’s roads, VicRoads has urged. Black ice occurs in freezing temperatures when heavy dew, rain or pooled water forms over the road. It can be extremely hazardous for drivers as it is invisible. It can form on any road, particularly during severe frosts in low-lying areas. “The cold winters we’re known for in Victoria means black ice is a serious problem, one which can have terrible consequences if drivers don’t use the roads carefully,” says VicRoads Director Vehicle and Road Use Policy, Robyn Seymour. VicRoads advises drivers to check the conditions before starting your journey. If conditions are icy, decide whether you really need to drive or if you could delay your trip. If you do drive and think black ice might be present, slow down at least 40km/h. Driving at a slow, safe speed means that you are more able to maintain control and should a crash occur, the outcomes would be less severe. Ms Seymour emphasised that you may have little or no control over your vehicle if you drive on black ice, and that less is more if you find yourself in this situation. “Until you clear the patch of ice, use the accelerator, brakes and steering as little as possible,” Ms Seymour said. “If you need to do anything, make any movements gentle. “Do not accelerate, apply the brakes hard or turn the steering wheel quickly.

Black ice can form during severe frosts or in low-lying areas. 156478 “If you try to struggle against the ice by brakTraffic app or visit traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au to ing hard or steering in the opposite direction, you check for the black ice warnings; increase the risk of spinning out. Avoid driving in icy conditions: delay your trip “Even the best driver cannot manoeuvre themif you can or, if you do have to drive, allow selves out of a black ice situation, which is why it plenty of time to drive slowly and carefully; is important to be travelling at a slow, safe speed Make sure your headlights work and leave in these conditions.” them on - they help you see and help others see VicRoads has these safety tips for driving on you; the roads this winter: Allow plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front of you - sometimes in poor condiBefore you get in the car, download the Vic-

tions, drivers can brake suddenly and icy conditions will take longer to come to a stop; Slow down to a safe and appropriate speed and be patient with other road users. Ms Seymour stresses that drivers can’t take the safety features of their cars or any warning systems for granted. “It is important to be patient, slow down and remember that it’s better to arrive at your destination late than not at all,” Ms Seymour said.

Simply the best seller TOYOTA’S Corolla retained its title as Australia’s best-selling car in the financial year ended 30 June, according to official sales figures. Local buyers snapped up more than 40,800 Corolla hatches and sedans during the latest year, eclipsing the popular car’s nearest competitor by more than 1500 sales. The strength of Corolla - which has also been Australia’s top seller in each of the past three years - helped Toyota lift its new-vehicle sales to more than 206,800 for the 12-month period. This represents an increase of 1.35 per cent over the previous financial year and a leading margin for Toyota of more than 88,000 deliveries over its closest rival. Toyota dealers closed out the latest financial year with 22,083 sales in June - a figure that is 2.7 per cent higher than June last year and 77.3 per cent before any other brand. As a result, Toyota dealers increased their retail sales to 102,344 vehicles for the first half of 2016, compared with fewer than 61,000 sales for the second-placed company.

Toyota leads seven individual market segments so far this year with HiLux 4x4 and 4x2, Camry, LandCruiser Prado, LandCruiser 200 Series, HiAce van and HiAce bus. In June, HiLux was Toyota’s best-selling vehicle with 4613 sales, followed by Corolla (4427) and Camry (3049), which was the clear leader among mid-size cars. Executive director sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said Toyota was strongly positioned to achieve market leadership for the 14th year in a row and the 20th year overall. “Toyota is reaping the benefits of delivering even-better cars backed by the industry’s leading dealer network and strongly competitive offers,” Mr Cramb said. “Across the industry, local buyers continue to show confidence with record sales in June and for the first half of the year - and even an eightweek election campaign has not dented buyer demand.”

Over 40,000 Corolla hatches and sedans were snapped up during the last financial year. 156505
