Eight years on ‘ice’ By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

Anonymous didn’t stop the paralysing urge for another hit. “When it comes to relapsing it could be something as simple as being in my room and getting that craving to do it because that’s where I used to smoke, Jarryd said. Jarryd relapsed every time he tried to quit ice, despite owing dealers money – and the dealers added up. Jarryd owed cash to about 15 dealers over his eight year drug habit, something he dabbled in himself. “I was a dealer and a user.

“My bank balance went into negative, I never used credit cards, I was just in debt with drug dealers, but it’s a worry when they aren’t your mates, he said. A week in the life of Jarryd just a few months ago shows the strong hold of addiction. “I’ve been through more jobs than dealers, he said. “You become unreliable, because you don’t sleep for so long you struggle to get up every morning and get to work. But the number of functioning ad-

dicts working in trades is staggering, Jarryd pointed out. “Ice is massive in trades – especially concreting, there’s so many. But the cycle of a functioning drug addict like Jarryd can mean hitting rock bottom before picking up the pieces. “It gets to an extent where once you do it every day for a long period of time you become a bit oblivious to your mistakes, you think you are working quick but you’re really not, he said. After dabbling in marijuana and speed, Jarryd said ice was the hardest drug he’d tried and hopefully would be the last. Jarryd started playing around with illegal drugs at 18 years of age, after he left high school in Frankston at 17 years. “I started doing drugs with friends from the peninsula, he said, and ended up doing ice alone on his bedroom floor for two years. Eight years later, Jarryd said hypnotherapy, counselling and Narcotics

WHEN Jarryd Bardsley looked back on his eight-year drug addiction, he admitted sitting alone on his bedroom floor smoking ice as one of his lowest points. The 26-year-old concreter from Cranbourne, smoked a gram a day, at the height of his addiction. “Ice gives you a buzz like nothing else out there, he told the News. “You’re on a heightened alertness when you’re on it, I felt like I was someone different when I smoked ice – I didn’t speak to anyone, not even my mum, I just wasn’t me. “It’s a worse you for sure when you’re on ice, you lose all judgement of what’s wrong and right and you don’t think things are as bad as what they are. “Ice is massive – it’s by far one of the biggest drugs. “It’s more addictive than other drugs that I’ve tried, you get that feeling that you just want more, enough is never enough. Jarryd has been clean from drugs for close to four months and attributes his new found attitude to Glenn Munso’s Youth YOU drug rehabilitation program and gym in Hallam. A former drug dealer and addict himself, Glenn “gets it, Jarryd said. A gram a day “is a lot, he said, adding that ice or crystal methamphetamine isn’t as cheap as people make it out to be. “$500 would last me a week, that’s enough for four people for one whole week that don’t do it very often, and I was having that in one week to myself. Jarryd dropped down to 70 kilograms, but now sits at a healthy 84 kilograms. “You can go days without eating, he said. “You just don’t have an appetite when you’re on ice.

Six-month jail term By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A CRANBOURNE man who struck and verbally abused a Dandenong railway station PSO has been jailed for six months. Akol Deng Mabour, 22, sought a sentencing indication as he appeared on a prison video link in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July. Mabour swore aggressively at two PSOs when asked to produce a concession card at the railway station on the night of 4 May, the court was told. “I have no respect for you, c***”, “You bitch, I’ll spit in your face” and “I’ll f*** you c***s up”, he said during his abusive tirade. Mabour was moved on from
the station. He returned with eight youths, including his younger brother, from Pop Up Park on Foster Street. As Mabour approached, a PSO pushed him in the chest. Mabour then struck out with his right arm to the PSO’s face. Mabour persistently resisted as the PSOs threw him to the ground, handcuffed and arrested him. Mabour refused treatment from a paramedic for a cut to his forehead. He told police soon after “they had it in for me”. “If you have a fight with me, I’m going to win.” Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel said Mabour returned to the station a second time because he had no other way of getting home.
“In the first instance, he was going home. His mistake was not having proof of concession. “In the first instance he was trying to avoid any trouble.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen retorted: “I don’t understand that at all. There’s nothing he did that supports what you said - nothing. “While I accept you felt affronted by the PSOs asking for a concession card, your behaviour was unacceptable, unnecessary and the level of aggression was unwarranted.” Mr Vandersteen said it was “not unreasonable” for a PSO to ask for a concession card. He noted the PSOs gave Mabour multiple warnings for his foul language and tried to get him out of the area rather than “engage with him”.
“What would you be thinking if you put yourself in the position of the PSOs ... when he goes out and comes back with a group of associates? “None of us are really confronted by people in this way. We’re in a very sterile environment. “I’d be really nervous if eight people advanced on me.” Mabour was already serving an 18-month jail term, with a fivemonth non-parole period over an assault on a taxi driver. Mr Vandersteen noted Mabour’s multiple violent priors, including assault of a police officer. Mabour received a six month term - with two months served on top of his existing jail sentence.
Second evacuation for school after suspicious bottle find By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A SECOND suspicious plastic bottle was found at Tooradin Primary School and the bomb squad called to assist local police, on Tuesday 12 July. The suspicious device was found at 8.40am, and the whole school was evacuated to the oval as a precaution. A message was sent out to the entire school community, headlined: ‘Evacuating School as a Precaution’. A spokeswoman from Victoria Police said the plastic bottle found had liquid inside it. “Police don’t believe that the new bottle was left at the school today, they believe it had been there since yesterday,” she said. On the first day back at school, on Monday 11 July, a student found the bottle during clean up and disposed of it in a bin outside an office. Senior Sergeant Nathan Prowd from the Pakenham Police Station was alerted to the incident about 3.30pm on Monday and made a statement. “It didn’t seem suspicious, just general rubbish,” Snr Sgt Prowd said. But during the course of the day the bottle ruptured in the bin and a strong gas smell drifted into the adjacent office space. “Some type of liquid has been released,” Snr Sgt Prowd said. “We’ve had nine staff members with very minor symptoms shown and the staff immediately evacuated,” he said. About 20 students were also removed from the building and accompanied staff onto the school oval. Four CFA trucks attended and firefighters ventilated the office space and took the bottle onto the school oval.
Cash-hungry burglars bite A SERIES of burglaries have left damaged property across Lynbrook and Cranbourne West as burglars jemmied open windows and doors. Three restaurants on Universal Way in Cranbourne West were entered by burglars on Friday 24 June between 11pm and 4.30am the following morning. A small amount of cash was stolen during the three break-ins, and offenders were described as wearing light-coloured clothing. The next day a drive through window was the access point for a burglar who stole a small amount of cash at a burger restaurant in the Lynbrook Village shopping centre, between 7.30am and 7.50am on Saturday 25 June. Once inside the fast food chain, the offender described as male, 155 to 160cm tall, with a thin build and wearing a blue Puma hooded jumper and a black baseball cap, left the premises through the same jemmied window. The Caucasian offender was wearing dark pants and red soled sneakers and black gloves at the time of the break-in. Another spate of burglaries throughout Cranbourne West on Saturday 25 June continued using the same style of offending. A group of shops had their doors jemmied open on Cranbourne-Frankston Road between 4.20am and 6.15am. Police believe nothing was stolen from the first break-in, but understand the same burglars attempted to enter a service station across the road, but instead activated an alarm.
Night sky lit up, again Parents rushed to pick up their children after the bottle ruptured and a strong odour was released. 156660 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS

CASEY’S never ending car fires continue. The latest blaze occurred around 3am near in Churchill Park Drive, Endeavour Hills, on Sunday 10 July. Saving our families By GEORGIA WESTGARTH GLENN Munso, a former drug dealer and addict, is using his past life to save families cracking under the “ice epidemic”. That’s what he calls it - an “epidemic” - so far-reaching that kids, users, and addicts are driving across Melbourne to attend his Hallam gym in the hope of beating drugs. Glenn, a 29-year-old personal trainer and creator of the Youth YOU Program in Hallam, said people drove from Essendon and Melton to attend his sessions in drug rehabilitation. But it was the helplessness he felt from parents and loved ones of addicts, that pushed him to take action outside of the individuals’ own battles. “Parents literally put their entire lives on hold when they have a child on drugs - it’s just a vicious cycle,” Glenn explained. “But I can give parents insight into what it’s like to be that kid on drugs and I find they appreciate that.” With a background firmly planted in the illegal drug scene, Glenn says he can insightfully educate parents in ways no other youth or support worker can, and has created an online portal to help more families than he ever could have hoped to meet in his gym. “It’s an online support program for anyone dealing with a loved one on drugs,” Glenn said. An online toolkit similar to Glenn’s was recommended to support families and communities in the 2015 National Ice Taskforce Glenn’s Youth YOU Online Support Group started up in June this year. One of the reasons Glenn decided to start focusing on this area was
Jarryd working out with his new mentor, Glenn Munso Essential Health and Fitness in Hallam. 156507 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS
due to one question he is continually asked by parents. “They ask me how they can reconnect with their child,” Glenn said. “They ask me how they can speak to their child on drugs. “They tell me they feel like they have lost their child. “Most parents’ whole world stops when they have a child addicted to drugs. “They don’t know how they should be living their own life - and it’s really damaging, they won’t go to parties or events, or go on holidays. They lose friends, they get depressed and anxious and it isolates them. “They can’t talk to other parents because they feel like they’re go-
ing to judge them on their parenting skills - this way they can learn and talk to me online and no-one needs to know about it.” Glenn’s program has been running since 2014 and has helped addicts as young as 13 years old, to 28. The user-pays online support group costs $17 per week and includes weekly videos, lessons and live question and answer sessions from Glenn. But Glenn said one of the most important aspects of the support group was exactly that, support from other parents living the same battles. “The live question and answers work well for the parents who don’t attend live forums and suffer with judgement, it’s a private way of ask-
ing questions,” Glenn said. The tutorials with Glenn touch on how to react to your child and communicate with them without giving off an anxious energy which can result in the child rebelling. Glenn said his program helped to rebuild relationships between drug addicted youths and their loved ones. It continues to “stop and save fights” between the two parties. “Parents message me with different situations and I tell them what to focus on to get the best results,” Glenn said. Participants are free to exit the support group at any time. To join, visit: http://youthyouprogram.com/join-new/
Eight years on ‘ice’ From front page Jarryd’s weekly cycle with drugs would go like this: “It would start sometimes on Thursdays and then I’d smoke Friday and stay up all weekend on a bender, I’d stay up Sunday and go to work Monday and you’d feel like s*** on Tuesday,” he said. So Tuesday would become the crux of the addiction. Jarryd couldn’t get through the week without smoking ice again on Tuesday. “It’s about getting through the day, Tuesdays are the day you’re not feeling so good, so you’d smoke and before you know it it’s Thursday again and the weekend starts,” he said. “Your body is so sleep deprived on ice and coming off it is horrible, it’s the worst pain, I wouldn’t wish it upon anybody.” But Jarryd hid his pain so well that it wasn’t until his mum opened his laptop and read his desktop screen saver that was the moment that would literally save Jarryd from crystal meth. The poem called, ‘I am crystal meth’, retells how the drug destroys the lives that use it and it wasn’t easy for Jarryd to quit. His mum Karen kicked him out of home before she found Glenn’s program. “I was six days clean when mum walked me in here (Glenn’s gym) for the first time,” Jarryd said. Now on his way to his first Christmas free of drugs in eight years, Jarryd walks into Essential Health and Fitness six days a week. “Subconsciously I really didn’t want mum to find out about my drug habit, but looking back I’m glad she did, she’s helped me so much,” Jarryd said. Currently working in a job he’s had for a few weeks and aims to keep, Jarryd is completing a course in personal training and says he has no time to relapse. “I’m not worried about relapsing because I don’t think about it,” he said. “I know if I stick to my routine of work, gym and bed, I have no time to relapse - routine keeps my head in the right place.” Jarryd is now debt free, but most importantly drug free, and has a message for everyone. “It’s a dark place - don’t do it to yourself and your family because it’s not that easy to just switch off drugs.”

“It was literally full of rubbish, choc-a-block full of junk, there was a petrol tank left inside with petrol inside it, people’s car registration service books and car manuals from five different cars and lots of pairs of sunglasses.” Ms Stewart believes the thieves used her car as a dumping ground for all the items they had collected from other stolen cars. Ms Stewart and her husband Gary were able to return one voucher of $300 found in their trashed car to its original owner. “I called the company and used the reference number to get it back to the person who bought it,” she said.

Since the incident Ms Stewart has changed all the locks in her home and said the opportunistic crooks were going to continue to cost Victorians. “It’s going to make a huge difference to all insurance policies, because they’re paying them out left, right and centre!” Ms Stewart said. “It’s all going to cost everybody in the end but it’s also all the inconvenience and the time, but at least we’re all safe.” Ms Stewart said it took more than three weeks until she was allowed to inspect her car. “It was a mess,” she said.

THE minute Sharon Stewart tells an insurance company she has made a claim “recently” her quote increases around $700. Ms Stewart had her Ford Territory Turbo stolen from her “quiet” Narre Warren court on Sunday 1 May by a pack of young thieves. Her children now jump at every sound they hear around their home, Ms Stewart told the News. As far as she’s concerned “Apex” or their copycat offenders have left her family $6,000 out of pocket. “We had that car for 10 years, it was in perfect nick and had only done 130,000 kilometres - the payout we got wasn’t going to cover it, our car was rare,” Ms Stewart said. The Stewarts replaced their Territory Turbo with another standard Ford Territory, but Ms Stewart says: “it’s not the same - I loved that car.” As home invasions skyrocket around Casey and the state, Ms Stewart’s story is one echoed throughout the outer south-east region. Burglary and break and enters are up more than 38 per cent on last year. And figures from insurance provider RACV also show a spike in claims for burglary. The City of Casey sits at number five in the top 10 local government areas to claim for burglary in 2014 and 2015. Brimbank topped RACV’s list with 291 claims last year, while Casey residents claimed 138 times - down on 2014 with 151 claims made to RACV that year. RACV Insurance Acting General Manager, Mark Geraghty said that overall there was a two per cent rise in the number of burglaries across the state, while the total cost of claims rose 12 per cent to more than $13 million. Mr Geraghty said burglaries accounted for the third highest number of home insurance claims, after storms and water damage, and advised residents to exercise extra vigilance in the remaining winter months. “Burglars are opportunistic and strike wherever they see vulnerability. Days are shorter in winter, so a break-in under cover of darkness could hap-

POWERLESS, furious and frustrated. These are the feelings of almost every resident in Bronson Circuit, Hawkshead Place and Danby Court in Cranbourne North after months of attempts to stop over-development in a quiet part of Casey. Most Casey residents would be completely unaware that if the area they live in is under a “Development Plan Overlay” or DPO, they have almost no rights over what gets built right next door. The case in point here is two ‘remnant’ blocks, one at 179 Rosebank Drive (eight units) and the other at 515 Narre Warren Road (10 units). Leftover farmhouses, these are now being turned into multi-unit developments, pouring traffic onto quiet residential streets where normally there is just one house per block. Together these 18 residences, ranging from two-bedroom units to four-bedroom twostorey townhouses, will add hundreds of car trips per day down quiet streets that are narrow and already struggling to cope with cars parking on the roadside. Casey Council themselves can do nothing, except deny a permit application and then have this decision overturned by the allpowerful VCAT, sitting in an ivory tower in Melbourne. We don’t object to development as such, but how much is too much? Four homes would have sufficed on one block, but 10? Almost every resident in the affected streets, 45 in all, signed a joint letter to council objecting. All credit to Cr Amanda Stapledon who fought long and hard to have the council reject the application and tried to have Vicroads consider other access options. But all to no avail, because under the DPO, and against VCAT, we the people are powerless. Now we are also furious and frustrated. Be aware, your street could be next. Rob Ward, Cranbourne North.

SCOOTER EXPO COME & TRY AT PELICAN CAFE The silent council TOORADIN WHY is it out of 11 Casey councillors, we only hear from one - the mayor ? Councillors are elected by the residents and ratepayers and as far as I am concerned they have a voice to have an opinion. I have

I would like to ask the CEO Mike Tyler, have you placed a ban on the other 10 councillors from making a comment regarding council decisions? And if so, why? If you have not, then let them speak up. This is going to have a negative effect on these councillors in the upcoming elections in October. In my ward of Springfield the mayor is one of my councillors, but who is our second councillor ? One would never know as we don’t see or hear from him or her. But I must say I do know who she is, and I would love to hear her views rather than the negativity coming out of the mouth of our mayor. Rex Flannery, Narre Warren South.
Poverty is no bonus AND education is well known to be the path out of poverty. Ms Petrides articulates very well the plight of families experiencing financial hardship in Casey. Likewise we see many families that are not able to afford the costs of their children’s public education program. Students are forced to elect cheaper subjects, they go to school without the resources they need and miss out on social development opportunities such as camps. My concern is that once bank interest rates rise, we are going to see a lot more families doing it tough and a lot more kids missing out. WILL it snow in Cranbourne? Network Seven’s meteorologist Jane Bunn seems to think so and local singer songwriter Sharon Start says if it does it will be history repeating itself. Ms Start, a long-term Cranbourne West resident, has had the pleasure of witnessing snowfall in Cranbourne and is crossing her fingers she’ll witness it one more time. “Thirty years ago we awoke to snow in Cranbourne, so it would be good to see it again after all this time,” Ms Start wrote on Facebook. Jane Bunn posted a list online of Victorian suburbs likely to wake up to a white winter wonderland on Wednesday 13 July and Cranbourne South was on her list. Ms Start told the News it was about this time in 1986 that she ran for her camera to capture her son in the snow. “We were up early to get my four-year-old son to kindergarten and as we walked to the car we thought at first it was frost on the ground,” she said. “But it was shaped differently and that is when we realised it was snow. “I grabbed my camera and took a photo of my son quickly before we headed off to kindergarten. “My son is now 34 and when I mentioned the possibility of snow he said he vaguely remembered when it snowed all those years ago.” Send us your show photos to dailyeditor@ starnewsgroup.com.au.

IT WAS a double case of doing a double-take when a man locked in police cells was brought into the wrong Dandenong Magistrates’ courtroom not once but twice on 11 July. The man seemed to have been quite the social butterfly in custody. As he was erroneously led out into the dock, he recognised the accused standing in front of judge, called out
to the accused by name and wished him luck in his case. Not that the judge was impressed. He scolded the accused for starting to make a name for himself in the criminal world. “How many people have people come out of the cells and say ‘G’day! Good luck!’” the magistrate said. “It’s all about who you know.”

Jason PEARCEDALE’S Thompson is one of the country’s leading greyhound trainers and says he can’t see much movement for the local industry, in the wake of the New South Wales government’s decision to shut down the sport next year. Mr Thompson, a family man who has been in the greyhound racing business close to 30 years told The News: “It’s not that easy for anybody to uproot their lives and move interstate.” He said the influx of trainers and dogs that was first reported wouldn’t be a large one. “It’s only natural some trainers who want to pursue careers will move interstate and perhaps choose Victoria but I’m sure Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) will put due processes in place to ensure they can relocate,” Mr Thompson said. “Financially and logistically a move might not be viable - I don’t think an influx is an issue at all.” Mr Thompson, 47, trains 20 greyhounds out of his Pearcedale property and has done for 13 years. His last Group 1 win amounted to $250,000, just two weeks ago, and he said the livelihoods of the interstate trainers were where the true cost lay. “I was quite shocked - I didn’t see it coming and it’s obviously very disappointing, all I can do is feel sorry for the NSW people. “This affects families and that’s where it becomes hard.” Mr Thompson said the swift action from the Victorian Government to assure the local industry’s future shows great certainty in the GRV. “I think people in the community should gain confidence in that it wasn’t a delayed reaction from the State Government, it was immediate, that’s got to be reassuring,” he said. “The way our industry runs down here is just so professional and thorough, hence why the government is backing the industry.” Damning ABC footage came out of a Tooradin track last year, showing animals being strapped
Pearcedale greyhound trainer Jason Thompson has full confidence in the industry, the GRV and its future. 47304 Picture: KIM CARTMELL to lures and ripped apart while being used as live-bait. This fuelled a Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry. But Mr Thompson says Victoria acted and is running the way it needs to. “We are in such a strong position in Victoria, we’ve acted the way we needed to and I think there lies the problem perhaps NSW might not have. “I’d like to think the implementation of strict welfare changes to the industry has been easy - it was simple for me, we really didn’t have to make any changes and on the whole I think it has been much the same - but I can only comment on my own experience.” A confident Mr Thompson said the greyhound racing industry had a strong future in Victoria. “From what I’ve heard Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia have all come out in support of the industry and they have confidence in the industry which is what we need to hear,” he said. Attorney General and Victorian Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, took to Twitter on Thursday 7 July to show his support for the embattled sport. Mr Pakula tweeted: “I am backing @GRV_News to continue and complete the
World’s
reform job it commenced more than 12 months ago. “None of the Perna, Milne or Bittar reports recommended the shutdown of Victorian greyhound racing. It is an industry that employs thousands. “But since live baiting the industry’s been on notice. Every participant should know its future depends on ongoing commitment to reform.” The NSW Government’s decision, announced on Thursday 7 July, is based on the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Racing Industry which found overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live-baiting. Yesterday Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant announced that their government was acting to protect animal welfare as a priority, and was planning for an orderly industry shutdown. The pair released the inquiry report which found that between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds - or at least half of all greyhounds bred to race were killed in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive. Shortly after the NSW announcement, the ACT announced that it would also move to ban the sport in Australia’s capital.

POKEMON Go has taken over the world- and Berwick is no exception. The phone app dubbed a type of ‘augmented reality’ is a trailblazer in the smart phone gaming sphere, and has added $7.5 billion to Nintendo’s market value since it hit the Appstore just last week. And its popularity has struck an Emerald bus shelter, which is due to be demolished, with gamers using the shelter as a ‘Pokestop’ to catch the beloved Japanese creatures. An Emerald gamer said that “the effect of removing the shelter would be felt by Pokemon trainers everwhere“. Down the road in Berwick, the Pokemon phenomenon has even captured the attention of police. A Berwick homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous in fear more gamers will swarm to their street if their name and address is revealed, has told the News suspicious driving in their neighbourhood wasn’t so suspicious after all. “Police were called to a house in Berwick following reports of a car seen acting suspiciously,” they said. The number plate was taken down, and this led to a young female driver being quizzed. “When questioned, she disclosed that she had been driving her sisters around town looking for Pokemons. “They’d been hovering in an area trying to capture their prey- police accepted their story.” Acting Sargeant Frank Ellesley, from the Casey Highway Patrol said he wasn’t familiar with this case but such driving could be considered careless. “We look at each individual circumstance, but someone driving considerably slow under the speed limit could be issued with a ticket for ca-

Heritage school CLYDE’S new primary school will honour the history of its surrounds in its name. The public private partnership (PPP) school currently goes by Heather Grove Primary School but the name Wilandra Rise Primary School has been endorsed by the local reference group. School principal Tina Clydesdale said the name was chosen with the local community in mind. “Wilandra was a prominent homestead that was built for a well-known Clyde family who cultivated the land into market gardens, and made significant contributions to the area,” Ms Clydesdale said. “We think this provides a perfect opportunity to bring history together with our vision for
the future, being one that prides itself on learning from the past to build a much brighter future.” The Prep to Grade 6 school will open in January 2017 and will incorporate an early learning centre. Ms Clydesdale said the school would also provide a community space for the public, which will be managed by the YMCA, including after school care. “The Selandra Family and Children’s Centre is also in operation adjacent to the school site,” she said. “This facility is an integrated hub comprising kindergarten, early childhood education, multi-use community rooms and maternal health services. “Master planning for the new school, including loca-
tion of the school entrance will ensure smooth transitions between primary school education and the Selandra Family and Children’s Centre.” Wilandra Rise Primary School is one of 15 government schools being delivered across some of Victoria’s fastest growing metropolitan and regional communities in the coming years. “The school has been designed to cater for learning in the 21st century,” Ms Clydesdale said. “Its buildings are modern, bright and have been designed to allow for flexible learning in a variety of spaces.” Queries about the school can be directed to Ms Clydesdale at clydesdale.tina.m@edumail. vic.gov.au.

The team-mates are new to the competitive culinary arena and entered the Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award to see how they would stack up against other young chefs, saying: “We thought it would be an exciting adventure, and a great opportunity to cook against other young chefs like us.”
Australian Culinary Federation Competition Director, Deb Foreman said, “We applaud all the young chefs that competed. Putting yourself up to be judged on your culinary talent among your peers is tough and we know that they will all take a lot from the experience of competing, in honing their skills and gaining more knowledge." Taking part in the Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award offers a great learning experience for young chefs looking to push themselves to the next level and advance their culinary careers by being judged to globally recognised standards on the presentation and overall taste of the dishes they create.

DIAMOND Deluxe Nails and Beauty is the new face in beauty in Narre Warren South but, despite that, it offers a lot of experience. Owner Jessica, who has spent 22 years in the industry, said the new business offered nail and beauty services from waxing and facials to new SNS - healthy natural nails, not gel, not acrylic. HOME TOURS ARE VIRTUALLY AMAZING
HOTONDO HOMES
HOTONDO Homes is excited to announce the launch of their new 3DExplore ‘virtual tour’ tool. UTILISING the latest in camera technology, 3DExplore allows you to virtually walk through Hotondo Homes’ display homes from the comfort of your own couch. The new tool will help provide vision and inspiration to new home buyers who may struggle to read a floor plan and imagine what the home will actually be like. Hotondo Homes managing director Michael Renwick said he was excited to provide home buyers with a fun and exciting way to choose a home they love. “People can now experience the quality, innovation and beautiful architecturally designed features of a display home where they want and when they want,” he said. “Hotondo Homes has multiple display homes right across the country. The new feature will help home buyers gain access to these homes, sometimes thousands of kilometres away from where they are located.” There are three different ways to use 3DExplore. ‘First person’ allows the user to take a virtual tour of the home and explore
every inch of it up close and personal. The ‘dollhouse’ feature allows you to zoom out and enjoy a complete 3D view of the home.
Finally, the ‘floor plan’ option can be used to get a bird’s eye view of the home for an overall feel.
Users can explore the homes from their computer or mobile device on the Hotondo Homes website at hotondo.com.au

Dani figures in state win By JARROD POTTER BACK-TO-BACK indoor national championship wins are pretty sweet off the bat for Dani Montague. Montague, 24, from Cranbourne North, featured in Victoria’s continued domination of the indoor game in recent seasons. Victoria 62 (2) defeated South Australia 51 (2) in the finale after Victoria’s openers blitzed 27 together, but by and large it was a tournament for the bowlers and fielders alike. “It was pretty good, second year in a row we’ve won,” Montague said. “Lost the first two games - we were ready, but we weren’t ready in a way - so after those two games we won every game after that. “Seven games in a row at the tournament and it was just a good team week overall.” There wasn’t much off the blade for the Victorians, but the side stuck it out to grind out the nail-biting, lowscoring triumph. “Resilience was one of our main things - which is what we always say,” Montague said. “We just gelled in the field and that’s what made us work.
“We had some batting stand outs during the week, but not really in the finals as it was basically a bowling and fielding game.” For now it’s back to the Cranbourne indoor cricket side for Montague before the weather improves and she can return to the outside Victorian Premier Cricket team at Box Hill. In the last round of the season, Montague took the last two wickets to restrict Dandenong to a draw and sneak past them to qualify for finals. After that, her Mustangs charged home to beat Essendon-Maribyrnong Park in the semi-final before winning their fourth flag in a row - taking the 2015/16 flag with a five-run win over Melbourne University. “They (Dandenong) needed one run, and I didn’t want to bowl - but myself and one of our 15-year-old bowlers had overs left - she got one then bowled out and I got one in each over,” Montague said. “We shouldn’t have even been there (the grand final), should not have won that Dandy game - taking 8/16 ... 6/1 at the end. “It was interesting.”

Greyhound industry stays safe and sound By RUSSELL BENNETT THE greyhound racing community throughout Melbourne’s south-east has painted a positive picture of the sport’s future in Victoria, despite state-wide bans in New South Wales and the ACT coming into effect from July 2017. A special commission of inquiry in New South Wales found that the industry in that state was incapable of reforming over the short to medium term, with Premier Mike Baird saying his government would work towards shutting down the industry in the coming months. But in a statement on the Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) website, its chairman Bernie Carolan said the decision by the New South Wales Government was based on circumstances that were “very different to Victoria”. GRV chief executive officer Alan Clayton, in a statement to the Cranbourne News, added that the closure “will have a big impact nationally as NSW was the country’s biggest greyhound racing state” but that “all of our 13 greyhound racing clubs across the state will run as normal”. Sandown Greyhound Racing Club racing and media manager Mick Floyd said the sport in Victoria is in “a much better place” than it was in New South Wales. “When the live baiting issue broke it brought a few things to a head but in terms of reform
Greyhounds will continue to hit tracks right around Victoria, despite bans in New South Wales and the ACT coming into Picture: GARY SISSONS effect in 2017. 147294 and changing the industry, it’s already a fair way ahead of New South Wales,” he said, adding that the news of the sport’s closure in that state could lead to trainers relocating to Victoria. “It’s certainly possible, and there’s been a lot of New South Wales trainers relocate to Victoria in the past 12 to 24 months, but trainers move all the time
for lifestyle opportunities and a range of different reasons,” he said. “The biggest issue in trainers coming to Victoria is the timeframe and the impact on their capital investments in New South Wales. “If you’ve got a greyhound property that you’ve poured a lot of money into then that in-
vestment has pretty much been flushed down the toilet now. “A lot of these guys are going to be behind the eight-ball with their finances. “To come down and find a property in Victoria they’re basically going to have to start afresh.” Floyd said Victorian grey-
hound racing had made a lot change - and improvements since the Four Corners report on the industry Making a Killing first aired on the ABC in early 2015. “The new GRV board and team of management has made some big changes and some very good changes,” he said. “The focus of everything
they do now is animal welfare and the wellbeing of the greyhound from the time it’s born to the time it moves on. “That’s absolutely paramount and at the forefront of every decision that’s made, and it’s being enforced quite strongly. “From the club’s point of view, we’re 100 per cent behind them and we’re investing heavily in a number of things at the club.” Floyd said the local community benefited from a $100,000 fund for various local projects. Melbourne’s November carnival is the highlight of the greyhound racing calendar in Australia, if not the world, with the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown the world’s richest race. “There are so many other things we do as well,” Floyd said. “We’ve got a lot of club days on Sundays. They’re increasingly popular and we get a lot of local community groups in and give them the chance to raise some money on the day. “We’ve got our mayor’s night coming up in September, which is a big charity event for men’s health. “A lot of the events we run now are geared around that sort of area. We tip money back into the community and we help out wherever we can.” This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, with events planned to mark the milestone.

Cream team of the decade By JARROD POTTER LOOKING back on the first 10 years since its Casey Fields debut, the Casey Scorpions handpicked the best 22 from 2006 to 2015 who donned the blue, red and white. The decade’s best Scorpions - since the switch from Springvale to Cranbourne - were assembled for the celebrations on Saturday night as the side celebrated those who made the move a success on and off the field. It was something the club circled on the calendar a year ago and Casey Scorpions general manager Matthew Young thought the night was a brilliant showcase of the team’s development since moving further south. “We discussed it last year at board level - that we’ve been here 10 years and should have a big night and name the team of the decade,” Young said. “There were 170-plus people who attended and plenty of people coming from interstate, guys who played local footy that afternoon then came up for the night. “It’s the biggest event the club has held since being here, since the first game in 2006, and it’s certainly something we wanted to put a lot of time and effort into, that’s for sure.” Evan Panozza was named the Team of the Decade captain - a fitting role for the man who guided the side through four seasons - and his former co-cap-
tain Kyle Matthews was picked on the wing and the club’s inaugural Casey captain Steve Harrison picked in the centre and as vice-captain. Current AFL footballers Alex Silvagni (Fremantle) and Tim Mohr (GWS) were picked at full back and centre-half-back respectively while Tim Smith and Brendan Fevola provided the one-two punch up forward alongside Jake Best and Nathan Page. The Scorpions also honoured David Biagi on the night with the former 2006 best and fairest winner picked in the back pocket. His wife Cara and father Fred accepted the award in his memory - after Biagi passed away in 2012 - and all attending enjoyed remembering the brilliant negating defender. “David was the inaugural best and fairest winner from 2006 and even from the first game he was best on ground that day and he just probably represents what the team is about,” Young said. “His father and wife were there on the night, which was a great thing from our point of view as well to honour him.” Above all everyone spoke about what a Casey jumper meant and how pulling on the boots and running out into the VFL cauldron feels and the status those memories have within every player, whether or not they made the Team of the Decade.
“The past players talked a lot about what Casey means to them as a footy club - guys like Kyle (Matthews), James (Wall), Evan (Panozza) - and just how the team meant a lot to them,” Young said. “We had guys like Jimmy Wall, Fev and Danny Nicholls who played AFL, Timmy Mohr and Alex Silvagni who were drafted - but also local guys like Nathan Page, who as a 20-year-old who came to the side from Berwick, and Jakey Best as well for a couple of years with us.” The Scorpions return to the paddock this week when they face the Bulldogs at Whitten Oval on Sunday morning. WNPL - ROUND 17 IN the cross-town showdown between Southern and Bayside, to the late surging Southern went the 2-1 victory spoils. Bringing the WNPL to Casey Comets’ home venue at O’Tooles Road, the Southern strike-force took a while to get going, but once up and running there was nothing the Baysiders could do. With midfielder/striker Tiffany Eliadis on the sidelines for last week’s red card - it left Stuart Munro to rearrange the roster and figure out the best attack. He settled on Brittany Dudley-Smith and Saphri Lines at the front and those front two impressed greatly. Southern almost struck first, with Dudley-Smith getting around the keeper, but she was unable to straighten up and finish the job past the last defender. From that immediate opportunity, Southern went on the back-foot as they were dudded by former Casey Comets youngster Jaymee Dudley (8') in the first few minutes, but from there Bayside squandered its chances. Southern’s young keeper Celia Kelsall wouldn’t be bested again for the afternoon as she clamped down with the help of the centre backs Natasha Dakic and Anouk Meereboer. The second half ebbed and flowed similarly before South-

Magpies put their mettle to metal By DAVID NAGEL HANDLING adversity has defined many good football teams over the years, and Narre Warren showed it has that quality in abundance after a gritty and grinding 47-point victory over Beaconsfield at Kalora Park on Saturday. The final margin would suggest otherwise, but the Magpies were in serious trouble early in the third quarter as they looked to secure a double chance in this year’s South East Football Netball League finals series. They were 32 points up midway through the second quarter, and seemingly headed for a spacious victory. But then bang, Ben Holland -a senior debutant doing a wonderful job on Beau Dowler- rolls his ankle, Jarrod Dalton goes off with a sore
back, and Darren Sheen pulls his groin. This after Hayden Stagg had a heavy collision with Jayden Gee that left Stagg with a damaged AC joint and Gee taken to hospital with a collapsed lung that required surgery on Sunday night. Throw in an arm injury to Matt Soroczynski and the Magpies had well and truly had their wings clipped. The Eagles capitalised, kicking three early goals in the third term to move within a straight kick before the Magpies dug deep. “I’ve never seen anything like it before, it was carnage,” said Narre Warren coach Heath Black, who rated the win one of the gutsiest he had been associated with. “As far as grit and determination goes, it is right up there as one of the best I’ve been involved in.” Co-captains Michael Collins
Mat Fletcher leaves a flock of Doves in his wake during Cranbourne’s 47-point victory over Doveton at Casey Fields on Saturday. 156597 Picture: DAVID NAGEL and Dylan Quirk led the way for the Maggies for whom Josh Tonna kicked three and Col McNamara and Trent Cody bagged two each. Big-men Jake Richardson, Grant Lofthouse and Sam McLean were also very important contributors, while Stagg’s ability to cope with pain in the final quarter was truly inspiring. Dan Hellyer, Jordan Roberts and Kane Airdrie toughed things out for Eagles. Cranbourne has overcome a very wayward start to defeat Doveton by 47 points at Casey Fields. The home side had the first nine shots of the game, kicking 1.8, before Doveton kicked two in a minute to undo their opponents’ good work. But the Doves flurry didn’t last long, with the Eagles regaining the ascendency and cruising home to a comfortable victory. Marc Holt kicked four, Ryan
Jones three, both the beneficiaries of some great work in the midfield from Mat Fletcher, Max Gearon and Shaun Marusic. The Doves were massively under-manned, but Nick Battle, Mick Henry, Mitch Cotter and Malis Lokeron could hold their heads high in defeat. In other games, Pakenham finally produced its best football to down Officer by 76 points at Toomuc Reserve, while an inefficient Berwick gave Tooradin a 52-point touch up at Edwin Flack. The Wickers kicked 4.8 and 3.6 through the middle quarters, but had 36 scoring shots to 14 to assure a soft run to the final siren. Kurt batt kicked three for the winners who gained plenty of drive from Michael Riseley, Ash Smith and Lucas Jellyman-Turner. Hampton Park had the bye.
Tough battle for finals berth By DAVID NAGEL THE South East Football Netball League - right now it’s like trying to put a big-square peg into a small triangle hole. Four into three just aint gunna go! That’s going to be the story of the last six weeks of the season, with Hampton Park (28), Tooradin (28), Doveton (26) and a fast-finishing Cranbourne (26) waged in a four-team war for three spots in this year’s finals series. And it’s well worth the fight too, with all four teams more than capable of leap-frogging Beaconsfield and becoming Narre Warren’s worst nightmare on grand final day. But Narre coach Greg Heinrich isn’t seeing it that way just yet. “We get asked that a lot, ‘What are you expecting when you get to finals’, but we’ve still got five more games to go before we even get there yet,” Heinrich said. The Magpies certainly had to give Saturday’s game their full attention, taking on a Beaconsfield side that had remained unbeaten since going down to the Magpies in round three. But the Magpies rose to the challenge once again, pulling away in the first three quarters for a comfortable 49-36 victory. Gabby Dwyer, Tayla Shannon and Chloe Phillips made the most of those opportunities, Dwyer (GS) dominating the scoring in the first half. Beaconsfield certainly weren’t disgraced. before squaring away the contest in the final term. Gun mid-courters Kaela Hughes and Ciara Nelson were missing, giving Amanda McKenna (C) and Mel Davies (WA) the opportunity to shine. ROC has overcome a poor third quarter, coming home with a wet sail to tie Pakenham, 44-44, at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. There was nothing between the teams in the first half, but a 14-9 third quarter gave the Lions a winning look with just the final term to play. The return of Megan Rosser (GS) gave the hosts some potency, the VNL star scoring all but four of
the Lions goals for the day. But ROC showed some real tenacity in the last quarter, Jaz Cross starring in the centre and Laura Quinn (GD) and Tess Young (GK) keeping things tight down back. Tooradin has jumped from fifth to fourth on the ladder after a comprehensive 40-26 victory over Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Wickers pushed the Seagulls early, trailing by one at quarter time, but a mid-game surge gave the Seagulls the four premiership points they needed to keep their doublechance hopes alive. Holly Gillespie (WD), Shona Wells (C) and Tara Smith (WA)
were terrific for the winners, while Sarah McDermott (WA/C) and Emily La Roche (WD) fought hard for the gallant Wickers. And Cranbourne continued its great recent form, giving Doveton an 18-goal lesson at Casey Fields. Tegan Stahl (GS) and Alanah Hardy (GA) were dynamos under the ring while the gun-duo of Sharni Lambden (GD) and Tara Cecil (GK) kept the Doves to a losing score. Aila Pera (C) and Liz Edwards (WA) played really well for the Doves during that third-quarter revival. Hampton Park had the bye.

Eagles spurred on for the win By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 12 CRANBOURNE’S aim for 2016 was simple. Run out matches, impose its presence on any opponent large or small, but most importantly - it wanted a big scalp. After 11 rounds and the relentless roller-coaster of life in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Cranbourne achieved the relatively impossible on Saturday as it knocked over one of the former Big Six. In only the second time this season a former VWFL Division 1 side has knocked over a Premier team, the Eagles claimed a 10.6 (66) to 6.8 (44) triumph over VU Western Spurs. The first term was a back-andforth affair as Cranbourne steadied itself from early lapses to storm to the front via Bianca Jakobsson (two goals), Kirsten Mcleod (two goals) and debutant Jas Grierson (two goals). From there it was neck and neck until the final term as neither side truly dominated proceedings through the middle phase. Cranbourne’s efforts were bolstered by the usual run-and-carry of Hayley Wildes and Jakobsson but - to the delight of the coaches - they weren’t alone in their efforts.
The Eagles tore apart every Spur at the contest and dished off some incredible link-up footy. The likes of Ash Fennell, Leah Olsen and Tess Thomas made the big moments count while the returning Corinne Cullis picked up where she left off to dictate terms across the field. Just as pleasing for the young Eagles, when the clash was there to be won, the Eagles’ gut-running and the way they spread across Whitten Oval left the Spurs vastly outmatched. Eagles lined up to carve up the hosts in the final term as the Spurs felt the pressure of the visitors’ relentless attack. Virtually spent heading into the final term, Western left Cranbourne unchecked in the runaway triumph as it booted four last-quarter unanswered goals. Shayla Marsh (two goals) loaded up in the dying minutes to jag a couple of goals and get a chance to sing the Cranbourne refrain for the first time in her short VFL career. “It’s the one we were chasing - we were after a top six side and we spoke about that a couple of times throughout the day - this is what we’ve set ourselves for and we wanted to make this one count,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said.
Shayla Marsh continued her stellar start to VFL life, booting a couple of goals in Cranbourne's win over VU Western Spurs. 156346 Picture: JARROD POTTER
“We’ve been in winnable positions before - twice against Diamo (Diamond Creek) in particular - where we should’ve really capitalised on it. “We’ve been in good form in the last couple of weeks ... and we brought that and ran straight over the top of them.” Fitness first paid its biggest dividend for Cranbourne as the Spurs had nothing left compared to the fleetfooted visitors. “We didn’t start the best in the first five, but then we settled well,” Smith said. “We matched them well and went in with a bit of a lead, but after that it was real 50/50 football in the second and third terms and we trailed by a couple of points heading into the final quarter. “But the last quarter, just said to the girls have the belief and we were good enough - we’ve been working hard on our fitness and it just showed as we steamrolled them.” Smith praised the efforts of Olsen - especially her marking up forward - as well as Steph Binder and Marsh. Cranbourne faces Geelong next week, and with the Magpies’ shockloss to Knox over the weekend, the visitors will be well placed to go back-to-back for the first time in the VFL.

Cavaliers teach scholars a lesson
Win is a win even minus grace

NPL 2 EAST - ROUND 20 AN ugly win is still worth three points as Dandenong City graciously accepted following a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Goulburn Valley Suns. The first half showed none of the finesse, determination or breakthrough speed that City has showcased this season as it fell to the Suns to shine through. They opened the accounts in the first half, and only through the hardwork of back trio Halil Gur, John Carroll and keeper Damir Salcin did the margin stay 0-1 at the half. Even after half-time, the City effort didn’t click into place. It was only after Aaron Healey switched the side around and made a few structural amendments that the Dandy boys flourished. Ross Frame and Amir Osmancevic started to trouble the Suns’ last line with a number of captivating runs and attempts on goal before the renaissance began. The skipper Carroll (77’) got on the end of a well-weight cross to head home the equaliser before Gonzalo Freddi’s beguiling run up the left could only be stopped by a foul in the box. Dario Matkovic (82’) had no problem slotting the ensuing penalty and the party truly began in the dying seconds as Keegan Ziada flicked a pass across to David Morovic (92’) to boot the third. “I think we won ugly today, but we found a way to win which was important,” Healey said. “We played better at times and have not won, but it was great to see when we scored that equaliser that it was only us who were having a crack at the game. “I think probably the last three weeks we’ve played good football
BIG V - ROUND 15 CONSOLIDATING its spot atop BIG V Division 2 competition, Casey Cavaliers had to battle tooth and nail to hold off Melbourne University 56-51. Against all the odds - losing players to injury, mishandling the ball and getting swamped by - the Cavaliers found a way through the quagmire to retain its minor premier status. A 12-point opening term was highlighted by nine turnovers and six fouls - giving Melbourne Uni too much opportunity at the other end. “Our first quarter was horrendous - throwing turnovers and not looking after the ball,” Casey coach Michael Davies said. “Defensively, we weren’t bad, but we just didn’t give ourselves opportunities to score and the frustration of that led to silly fouls. But Casey saved its best for after the half, completely shutting down the scholars’ attack in a 19-5 third term, led by Tarryn Wilkin (16 points, 14 rebounds) and Cyanne Mather (12 points, seven rebounds). Ruchelle Mcracken (10 points, eight rebounds) only featured in 18 minutes of action because of an ankle injury sustained in the second half, leaving the heavy lifting up to Wilkin and Mather, especially after Jess Szalek fouled out and Lauren Tuplin left the court after a big hit. “Having captain down part way through the quarter changed how we played - Tarryn stood up and stood tall as she and Cyanne definitely took a step up,” Davies said. “The girls took the half time message on board and just got it done - one of the best quarters we’ve played for the year, and I think it was half way through that quarter Ru (Mccracken) went down with an ankle injury.
Michael Davies was pleased the Cavaliers escaped with a five-point win over Melbourne University. 152335 Picture: ROB CAREW
“They only made a layup on the buzzer at three-quarter time and we nearly had them - two baskets in a quarter - and that’s something we were pretty happy with.” Allowing the scholars only five field goals in the second half, boiled down to the high-level defence clamping down and picking off rebounds at will. With the other talls out of the action, “Tarry and the mosquitoes” as Davies put it, held it together at the death to make sure the scoreline wasn’t reflective of the overall performance. With Bec Magdich (thumb) also out, it leaves Casey without two starters heading into a precarious last three weeks of the regular season - facing Mornington, North East and Blackburn in the lead- up to finals. “Our goal from the very start was top three and we’ve nearly achieved that - ideally you want to get two out of the three wins to achieve that,” Davies said. “Mornington is a team we can get, North East is a team we want to get, especially while they’re in great form, and Blackburn been that team to get after and they got us the first time.”
Sharing the load, Casey’s men had a canter over Keilor 77-58 away on Saturday night. On the back of a team-wide effort - led by Dean Johnson (13 points, eight rebounds), Matt Witherden (12 points) and Ben Louis (10 points) - the side punished the Thunder early. A 29-16 first term had the gap explode early before Casey slammed the throttle even further to take a 51-27 lead at the half. Keilor made a match of it in the second half, as Stewart Baird split the minutes in the walk-over triumph to give Casey a two-game break on fourth placed Melton. Sam Pike (25 points, 12 rebounds) went ballistic in the Youth Men’s 83-62 victory over Western Port on Sunday afternoon, alongside Nathan Dodgson (16 points), Will Pask (eight points) and Tim Reeves (eight points). The men face a double header against Sunbury away on Saturday night before hosting Mildura on Sunday; Casey’s women head to Mornington on Saturday night while the Youth Men battle Mildura at home on Sunday afternoon.

Dandenong City sing the song loudly after its 3-1 triumph over Goulburn Valley Suns. 156595 Picture: JARROD POTTER and particularly last week - had a great first half and came in one-nil down at half-time. “This week I don’t think we played well in the first half - second to everything, really poor performance in the first half - and had a mountain to climb.” Healey puts it down to City’s hardwork in the last half-hour in particular that sealed the Suns’ fate. “The work rate - we didn’t have that in the first half,” Healey said. “We knew they’d come here and they work hard for each other, they’re an aggressive side and disciplined side and we wanted to match that and failed in the first half but did it in the second half. “In the last 20-25 minutes we were able to take control.” After an impressive 7-2-1 record from its last 10 games, City pride is at all-time high as the side still holds out hope for NPL promotion, heading into its clash against Brunswick City on Saturday at home. In the state leagues, Casey Comets defeated Warragul United 1-0 on the back of a strike from Junsoo Park (22’), Berwick City was downed 2-3 by Manningham United Blues, Doveton SC lost 0-1 to Old Scotch, Hampton Park United lost 2-5 to Bayside, while Casey Panthers were thumped 0-9 by Rosebud.

Set to shoot off the shelf By DEREK OGDEN HORSES for courses - it’s a throwaway line to explain that particular strengths are suited to certain situations. The Renault Clio RS 220 Trophy is a case in point. With its added ‘horses’ - power, that is - the special edition is not always at home on the street. Compared with the Clio RS 200 EDC five-door hot hatch, the new limited edition features a more powerful engine with 15 extra kilowatts, up to 40 Newton metres more torque, a sportier chassis and an enhanced EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) automatic transmission. The Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy - 220 is its horsepower output - comes with new design 18-inch wheels, carbonlook interior trim details and leather sports seats with integrated head rests and is available in a new body colour, Frost White matte finish with exclusive gloss black roof. Cleverly from a rarity point of view, just 220 220 EDCs are being imported to Australia, priced at $39,990, plus on-road costs. Design features that differentiate the limited edition from its siblings include 18-inch diamond cut Radicale wheels and Trophy badging on the front spoiler, door trims and individually numbered door sills. The Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy also sits flatter on the road, the chassis hav-

Stiffer dampers have been fitted and are coupled with hydraulic bump stops. The cabin is kitted out with an embossed leather trim steering wheel, heated leather sports seats with integrated head rests and a gear lever base plate and air-vent inserts finished in satin-effect chrome instead of the anodised red in the standard Clio RS 200. The gloss black centre console sports satin red inserts housing the 7.0-inch touch-screen navigation system, while the dashboard itself is made from prestigious soft-touch carbon with a Renault Sport logo inset.
The RS-badged steering wheel is wrapped in leather with sporty double red stitching. The seats are covered in dark carbon cloth upholstery and the RenaultSport logo on the headrests. Driving performance information is carried over from the Clio RS 200 EDC with the latest on-board telemetry showing real-time driving data, including torque and power outputs, G-force diagrams, wheel traction figures, efficiency and much more on the 7.0-inch touch-screen. The system can save driving data on a USB which can be uploaded directly to the driver’s account on the RenaultSport.com website. On the site, stats and laps can be replayed and analysed to create public or private com-
munities with fellow enthusiasts. Using the mapping functions local courses can be created and shared with other driving enthusiasts via social media. Feel free to play with the R-Sound which replicates the engine notes of various vehicles including a motorbike, electric car and, yes, the Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy. Compared with the Clio RS 200 EDC, the 1.6-litre engine of the limited-edition version has 10 per cent more power and up to 40 Nm of extra torque thanks to new engine mapping, a larger turbo, an intake system designed to minimise back pressure losses and a revised exhaust system to accommodate a Euro 6 catalytic converter. Added torque is available thanks to a ‘torque boost’ function in fourth and fifth gears. The vehicle’s EDC (Efficient Dual
Clutch) transmission has been revised to achieve gear changes that are up to 30 per cent faster, with down changes made more rapid by reduced steering wheel shift paddle travel. There is now greater flexibility in ‘Sport’ mode to combine city and country driving. Passive safety includes driver and front passenger airbags, plus driver and front passenger head and chest side airbag. The car features the latest in antilock braking with emergency brake assist, electronic brake-force distribution and emergency warning lights, which are activated under heavy braking. Also incorporated are electronic stability control, anti-slip regulation and hill start assist. Surely the latter isn’t needed by any ‘real’ driver, indeed by anyone driving a car with an automatic transmission? The test vehicle was finished in a vivid Liquid Yellow, which meant there was no hiding on pulling up to park, the colour attracting some enthusiastic comments. Stop / start technology is standard on the limited edition vehicle, marking the first time in Australia Renault has offered this feature in combination with the EDC transmission.
