■ Club stunned at star player’s single shot death...

Shooting tragedy By JARROD POTTER The North Dandenong community is grieving after the tragic shooting death of sporting allrounder Rahat Khan. On Tuesday evening, Khan, 20, from Dandenong died in Dallas, in Melbourne’s north, after suffering a single gun-shot wound to the upper chest. The exact circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be determined and the Victoria Police investigation is ongoing. After the shooting a friend attempted to drive Khan to hospital before pulling over on Millewa Crescent in Dallas to ask passers-by for assistance. But despite the best efforts of passers-by, police and paramedics, Khan could not be revived. His family emigrated from Afghanistan and Khan immediately flourished in Australia on every sporting field he could find. He was North Dandenong’s junior cricket captain in a team that won a DDCA under-13s flag in 2008/09, played in a Sunday turf premiership with Clayton in 2011/12 – making 50 not out in the grand final – and was just as gifted at football. Khan won the 2010 league best-and-fairest in the DDJFL, a premiership, and was also an interleague representative. Friends and team-mates flocked to Facebook to share their grief, talking about how driven, funny and passionate he was about his sport. North Dandenong cricket team-mate Stefan De Silva described him as an unbelievable talent who supporters couldn’t wait to see head out to the middle – whether in cricket or footy. “First met Rahat and brother Javid Khan when they came to the club – would’ve only been 9-10,” De Silva said. “Raw talent, but he was just like a fish to water when it came to cricket and then same deal with footy – him and (Clay) McCartney, memories of those two playing around at the club – even after juniors and seniors had finished they would hang around and play at the club. “His passion for cricket was great and it’s hard to deal with as you can imagine as it’s still raw.” North Dandenong football team-mate Jayden Macdonald remembered Khan as the person everyone looked up to – whether it was on or off the field – and he set an amazing standard as one of the club’s Muslim footballers.

He was just a happy “dude, always smiling and always wanted to be on the field and played for as many teams as he could …

– Jayden Macdonald

“He was just a happy dude, always smiling and always wanted to be on the field and played for as many teams as he could,” Macdonald said. “I think it’s caught everyone by shock for the kid he was – always was an athlete and that was his first priority. "Always a good dude - always laughing. "Every time I think back to him I remember him having that massive smile on his face. “He was just that good at football and always played up (an age group) in our team – was a funny guy, cult figure – had the skills around him to grab everyone’s attention.” Friends said Khan’s devotion to his religion made playing sport during Ramadan a great challenge but that he never wavered in his commitment to his team-mates. “Culture was a massive thing for him and something I always looked up to,” Macdonald said. “In our club, Muslims became a massive part of the numbers and before training he would take them into the rooms and they would have prayer before they went out on the track. “During the finals was during Ramadan also and he’d go through the games without water or food – it was very impressive.” The Sharks will wear black armbands this weekend in Khan’s honour. Khan’s talents earned him plenty of mentions in the press over the years. He was interviewed by Star News Group in 2012 after taking 6/10 in a DDCA under-17 match including a hat-trick. Victoria Police urge anyone with information about Khan’s death to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Toys for kids in need filled Dandenong RSL thanks to Victoria’s Nashos. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia’s (NSAA) south-east sub-branch coordinated the collection on Saturday 9 July. Sub-branch president Mike Smith said the Salvation Army Toy Bank would distribute the haul of “several thousand toys”. “It’s on the condition that none of the toys are sold in their shops - they are all to be given away to needy kids,” he said. “They also give to other charities and they also give to jails.” He said Salvos case managers could recommend a child receive a certain item, like a bike for a boy so he can hang out with his pedalling mates. Mr Smith said the NSAA had donated up to 70,000 toys over the 13 years its run the project. “A lot of the branches donated toys. Some of the sub-branches donate money, which we collect and we go to a wholesale toy place in Swift Way,

Dandenong South,” he said. “They look after us and they also donate stuff as well.” Mr Smith said the toys ranged from bikes and scooters to teddies and dolls. “We’re also going out to the Salvation Army warehouse at Brunswick where they distribute all the toys from,” he said. The NSAA represents the 287,000 young men the government called up for service during two conscription schemes. About 227,000 were drafted between 1951 and 1959, during the Korean War. Navy and air force National Servicemen aged 18 did six months of full-time training while army National Servicemen served three months of fulltime and then the balance part-time in the Citizens Military Forces. Between 1965 and 1972, National Servicemen aged 20 were called up for two years’ full-time service to the army during the wars in Borneo and Vietnam. 1231106-ACM25-16

PSO rail attacker jailed By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A Cranbourne man who struck and verbally abused a Dandenong railway station PSO has been jailed for six months. Akol Deng Mabour, 22, sought a sentencing indication as he appeared on a prison video link in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July. Mabour swore aggressively at two PSOs when asked to produce a concession card at the railway station on the night of 4 May, the court was told. “I have no respect for you, c***”, “You bitch, I’ll spit in your face” and “I’ll f*** you c***s up”, he said during his abusive tirade. Mabour was moved on from the station. He returned with eight youths, including his younger brother, from Pop Up Park on Foster Street. As Mabour approached, a PSO pushed him in the chest. Mabour then struck out with his right arm to the PSO’s face.

Mabour persistently resisted as the PSOs threw him to the ground, handcuffed and arrested him. Mabour refused treatment from a paramedic for a cut to his forehead. He told police soon after “they had it in for me”. “If you have a fight with me, I’m going to win.” Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel said Mabour returned to the station a second time because he had no other way of getting home. “In the first instance, he was going home. His mistake was not having proof of concession. “In the first instance he was trying to avoid any trouble.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen retorted: “I don’t understand that at all. There’s nothing he did that supports what you said - nothing. “While I accept you felt affronted by the PSOs asking for a concession card, your behaviour was unacceptable, unnecessary and the level of ag-

gression was unwarranted.” Mr Vandersteen said it was “not unreasonable” for a PSO to ask for a concession card. He noted the PSOs gave Mabour multiple warnings for his foul language and tried to get him out of the area rather than “engage with him”. “What would you be thinking if you put yourself in the position of the PSOs ... when he goes out and comes back with a group of associates? “None of us are really confronted by people in this way. We’re in a very sterile environment. “I’d be really nervous if eight people advanced on me.” Mabour was already serving an 18-month jail term, with a five-month non-parole period over an assault on a taxi driver. Mr Vandersteen noted Mabour’s multiple violent priors, including assault of a police officer. Mabour received a six month term - with two months served on top of his existing jail sentence.

Minister refuses to U-turn over junction crash fears By CASEY NEILL Right-turn restrictions will remain in place at Dandenong’s Lonsdale and Foster streets despite claims they’re causing crashes. The Journal reported in March that Greater Dandenong Council was writing to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan seeking an urgent review of the part-time bans with a view to removing or modifying them. Councillor John Kelly, who moved the motion, said the minister’s response “basically poo-hooed it”. “They don’t seem to have a grasp of the safety issues, I don’t think,” he said. “I’d dearly love to get him out to have a cup of coffee in Dandenong and show him the problems. “I’ll shout him a coffee.” Cr Kelly said there were a number of problems at the intersection and on Foster Street between Lonsdale and Langhorne streets. “It’s the peak times that are really a concern,” he said. “I’m getting so frustrated. “The answer seems to be no all the time. “Residents keep telling me that they’re having near-accidents.” He said motorists travelling east on Foster Street who found they couldn’t turn right onto Lonsdale would continue to Langhorne and perform a U-turn. “It’s an accident waiting to happen,” Cr Kelly said. “On Langhorne Street, we could do some things there. “I think even if council could extend a median in the middle of the road there so it goes from Foster Street up maybe 50 metres or something. “They turn into Langhorne Street and then they try to do a U-turn immediately. “If you come around behind them ... I’ve seen one guy run up the back of a car a while back.” Cr Kelly said that before 9.30am, even when there was no oncoming traffic, motorists were not permitted to turn right into Lonsdale Street. He said this caused frustration and often left vehicles stranded in the turning lane, unable to re-enter the through-traffic. “I’ve had our engineers down there. They can see and understand now the issues that need to be

Pool plan leak makes waves Dandenong’s Oasis pool could make a $50 million move to Dandenong Market, under a confidential council plan. Councillor Maria Sampey let the cat out of the bag at the Monday 11 July Greater Dandenong Council meeting. Her colleagues exchanged gobsmacked expressions as she questioned where an extra 300 parking spaces would come from to accommodate the relocation. Cr John Kelly leapt to his feet and called a point of order, blurting out with urgency that the matter was discussed at a councillor briefing session as a confidential item. Cr Sampey was stopped mid-sentence and took her seat as corporate services director Mick Jaensch responded to the point of order, confirming that the matter was indeed confidential and in the “very early planning stages”. She remained seated and silent, with a bemused expression on her face, and the councillor question time segment moved on to Cr Peter Brown. He offered Cr Sampey a bag to put the proverbial cat into. Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie said the council was following a scheduled review of its Dandenong Market precinct masterplan, “part of which is to consider a wide range of opportunities and scenarios for such a key site”. “In parallel with this process, the council is considering the long-term future of the Dandenong Oasis,” he said. “One option is whether a facility of this type could sit in the activity centre.” Mr Bennie said the council would engage with the community once it had developed its initial thinking around a masterplan and options for the pool’s future.

Maccas throat slash threat

Councillor John Kelly is unhappy that Foster Street traffic can’t turn right into Lonsdale street before 9.30am, even when there’s no oncoming traffic. 156751 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS fixed,” he said. “They’re just simple things. “It is just so bloody frustrating.” The part-time right-turn bans were introduced in 2010 as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project which Cr Kelly said “has improved our city” - the turn bans excluded. Mr Donnellan said he was happy to consider meeting with Cr Kelly should he approach his office. A spokesman for the Minister said VicRoads

was working with the council’s traffic engineers who agreed the right-turn bans during peak periods were necessary for safety and congestion reasons. “VicRoads has submitted a signage improvement strategy to council traffic engineers for consideration,” he said. “This strategy looks at improvements to signs which will give the opportunity for road users to take an earlier detour when the right turn bans are in place.”

Thieves held a large, curved knife to a 17-yearold’s throat during a robbery at Springvale McDonald’s. Police said two men arrived at the fast food restaurant at Osborne Avenue and Westall Road in a grey SUV about 9.25pm on Sunday 10 July. One walked inside carrying the knife and the other was armed with a garden saw. The thin and tall duo wore gloves, hoodies and face coverings, Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said. He said there were up to 20 patrons inside at the time. They confronted the staff behind the counter, placing a knife against the 17-year-old boy’s throat and stealing money from the register. Det Sgt Kirton said they then turned their attention to the 26-year-old store manager and demanded she open the safe. They ran back to the car with their takings and fled the scene. The vehicle was found burnt-out at Spring Valley Reserve in Clarke Road, Springvale South, just after 11pm that night.

Looking Back

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

100 years ago 20 July 1916 The War The women of Australia have already done, and are doing, much splendid work in the war of raising war funds for various kinds and of supplying valuable equipment to our boys bound for the front. Now an even greater and harder task faces them – to assist in stimulating enlistment. Yet that is what every woman of Victoria who realises her true duty to State and Empire must do today, and do quickly and unflinchingly. While there are many who have given their husbands and sons to the great cause, there are many who are either indifferent or who shrink from making the great sacrifice. Yet in this stupendous life or death struggle of the nation, women have even more to lose than men.

Would they keep their sons at home under pretence that it will be time enough to fight the German hordes when they reach Australia? Then it will be too late. Great Britain will have perished as a nation.

50 years ago 21 July 1966 A quiet night – or was it? Ian Garrett was assigned last Friday night to take a firsthand look at the Lyndale “mod” dance about which there has been considerable controversy. It was not a night to be out – unless it was imperative. I regretted the reluctant kind of dedication which had urged me to have a look at the Lyndale “mod” dance. Even with my heater of the car full on and the blower operating, the windows still fogged up.

At the dance, cars were parked in hundreds. Noise? Not much where I was parked opposite the entrance on the other side of Menzies’s Avenue. Inside it was different. The bands really beat out the beat, amplified until any tune there may be vanished and all that was left was the beat. When I left some time after 11pm the mist was thick and conditions were icier than ever. From there to Scoresby and beyond the mist had become dense fog and I was grateful for the white lines on the road. And still the cars ripped past at speeds of up to 50MPH. My “quiet night” was coming to an end.

5 years ago 18 July 2011 Councillors see the light Greater Dandenong councillors have supported the installation of traffic lights in Herbert Street, Dandenong, although it is “unlikely” the education department will provide funding. At last week’s meeting, the councillors rejected the council staff recommendation and voted against using automatic bollards which would have closed the street from 8am to 4pm on school days.

Sargent draws attention to sweets The business name was a “cute play on words” using her married name. It means that if she divorces, she loses her business, Ms Sargent jokes. She adds that not only is she grateful for the name but also for her husband’s support for the enterprise. The business has gathered steam in the past six months through Facebook and dropping off business cards around the region. Ms Sargent is also gaining a profile with her chocolate-coated cake balls - sometimes with a shot of salted caramel - at the monthly night market at Lynbrook Community Centre, and the recent decadent dessert-fest Winter Treats in Berwick. The next Lynbrook market, with children’s activities, teppanyaki and door prizes, is on 22 July, 5.30-9pm. Her chocolate-coated cake balls - with a flavour shot of salted caramel - went down a treat at the Winter Treats event in Berwick recently.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Kate Sargent isn’t that proud of the cake that snowballed her into a home-cooked sweets enterprise. It was a top-deck cake - a vanilla and chocolate sponge with purple icing and flowers - cooked for her daughter’s first birthday. But the offering went down well and stirred Ms Sargent’s dormant passion for baking birthday cakes, cupcakes, cake balls and wedding cakes in her Cranbourne home kitchen. Ms Sargent said she always loved helping in the kitchen as a child, with particular fond memories of the classic Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake cookbook. “Children’s birthday cakes - that’s where my real passion is, especially for first birthdays and baby showers. “It’s my happy place. It’s just lovely to see the excitement on kids’ faces.”

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL She said she now appreciates the real labour of love that her mother endured to re-create the Women’s Weekly cakes recipes. Requests came from time-poor friends for a variety of fun-themed birthday cakes. Ms Sargent has created designs including Finding Nemo, Paw Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman. “Most of us don’t have as much time as we used to. They don’t have the time to organise a party and make the birthday cake as well.” Along the way she has perfected the art of edible, icing figurines and flowers.

Kate Sargent with her home-baked treats 156471 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS She honed her technique at cooking classes and by astutely Googling cake-making videos on YouTube and pictures on Pinterest. Two years ago, her commandingly named home business Sargent Sweetness was officially born.

Raider sobs to mum over raids By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NARRE Warren man has been remanded on eight charges of holding up shop staff at knifepoint in Melbourne’s south-east in June. Sean Peter O’Toole, 26, appeared briefly via video link in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July, and did not apply for bail. He had been remanded in custody since being arrested two weekends earlier. “I love you, Mum,” he sobbed to relatives in the court gallery. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted O’Toole had been on bail during several of the offences, as well as a community corrections order. O’Toole was accused of an armed robbery of a Narre Warren servo on 7 June, stealing $170 cash and a packet of Winfield cigarettes. He was also charged over an armed robbery of $300 from a Clayton tobacconist on 24 June, $100 from a Pakenham servo as well as $60 from a person on 27 June. The other alleged armed robberies involved $300 from a Springvale grocery store on 27 June, $150 from a person in Springvale on 28 June, $650 from a Springvale clothes shop on 29 June, and $200 from a Hawthorn tobacconist on 30 June. O’Toole was charged with attempted armed robberies at Springvale on 27 June and Hawthorn on 30 June.

He was also charged with a Noble Park burglary on 7 April, allegedly stealing cash, jewellery and bank cards valued at $1020. The accused allegedly used a bank card not belonging to him to dishonestly buy $59 of items at Coles in Noble Park that day. He also allegedly stole $2800 of jewellery and a digital camera in a Narre Warren burglary in April, and destroyed a window in Hampton Park in May. O’Toole was also charged with speeding at 113 km/h in an 80 km/h zone as well as two counts of driving unlicensed and a single count of driving an unregistered vehicle. He was set to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing over the alleged armed robberies on 12 July. He will appear on the other charges, including possession of methamphetamine and breaching a corrections order, at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 August.

Examining youth and asylum seeker unemployment in the same report won’t help either group find work, a refugee advocate fears. At the Monday 11 July council meeting, councillor Matthew Kirwan moved a motion about how Dandenong council could address asylum seeker unemployment. But Cr Jim Memeti successfully requested youth unemployment also be included in a report which is due back to the council in November. “We need to broaden this more,” he said. “We have double-digit unemployment in this municipality and youth unemployment is at 26 per cent.” Friends of Refugees spokeswoman Sri Samy said Greater Dandenong’s youth unemployment - and general unemployment – needed to be addressed. “But it’s an issue so huge that I think it should be addressed separately,” she said. She said most asylum seekers received very little funded support. “They’re pretty much on their own trying to navigate and find their first job,” she said. Organisations are lending a hand. “The problem is the businesses don’t want all the organisations contacting them for the same job,” Ms Samy said. “They’re looking for one point of contact. It’s a more organised way of dealing with employment pathways. “The notice of motion is trying to explore what’s available and then to try and make an informed decision on how to deal with the issue.” Last week the Journal reported that Cr Peter Brown thought the motion was “inequitable” and would put “down-and-out Aussies” to the back of the employment queue and said many asylum seekers were economic refugees. Ms Samy said his comments were “an outrageous misrepresentation”. “I was quite surprised to see that he was talk-

ing about equal opportunities and disadvantaging other people,” she said. “Asylum seekers living in the community are in no way equal to the services other people receive.” Cr Kirwan said it wasn’t the council’s job to find jobs for the 2600 asylum seekers living in the municipality, but it could play a role in linking asylum seekers with agencies and employers. “This was about creating a level playing field for asylum seekers and the general community creating equal opportunity, not giving them an unfair advantage,” he said. “Asylum seekers get much less support from the community at present compared to other migrants.” Cr Kirwan also dismissed Cr Brown’s claims that asylum seekers were economic refugees as “nonsense and insulting”. “The largest group of asylum seekers in Greater Dandenong in the last 20 years has been the Hazaras,” he said. “In the last 20 years tens of thousands of Hazara have been massacred in Afghanistan and Pakistan.” At the council meeting, Cr Brown said: “All disadvantaged groups should have equal opportunity” and referred to the Brexit result in the UK and the resurgence of One Nation at this month’s Australian federal election. “People do see inequities and some people aren’t’ afraid to stand up and say ‘this isn’t’ fair’,” he said. He said the original motion was too exclusive and supported Cr Memeti’s amendment “on the basis of equal opportunity”. Cr Sean O’Reilly said broadening the motion diluted its impact. “They do not have exactly the same equal opportunities compared with native-born Australians,” he said. “If you try and study everything you end up with nothing. You need to draw the line somewhere. “Asylum seekers have particular needs this council wants to fully understand.”

A spiral of postcards imploring emotional engagement on refugees has won the inaugural national Home and Art Prize. The winners were announced at Dandenong’s Walker Street Gallery on Thursday 7 July. Home and Art celebrates the work of refugees and asylum seekers and provides an opportunity to recognize their contribution to Australia’s cultural and social fabric. Visual artist Sha Sarawari from Queensland won the $3000 first prize with a floor-based installation. It’s made of postcards he put into letterboxes with a request for them to be sent back to him explaining people’s feelings about refugees in Australia.

He came to Australia as an Afghani refugee in 2000. “In my work, I aim to explore the contemporary discourse of refugees world-wide,” he said. “My work is influenced by my personal experience of seeking asylum in Australia and the journey that I went through to becoming a refugee and, ultimately, an Australian citizen.” The $500 second prize, for a local artist, was awarded to Hussein Ali Zobea from Dandenong South for a painting depicting his former home city in Iraq. Mahla Karimian’s Persian miniature etching on scratchboard was highly commended and she will receive an artist-in-residency opportunity to further develop her work. Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said refugees came to the municipality seeking safety,

New Rotary Club of Noble Park president Ron Damon. we love doing. “Helping someone in your life, it’s a great feeling.” The group meets each Thursday night at Sandown Regency Motor Inn at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. “We do fellowship activities, too,” he said. “We do some interesting tours and visits - we have a lot of fun. “My main aim for Rotary is to continue on the projects we’ve done and find some new projects. “Each year to have to change to keep up the interest.” Helping young people throughout the region and beyond is a focus for the club. Last year it provided funds so Noble Park Primary School students from two families could continue their education. It also runs a literacy reading program at the school, dubbed Hooked on Books, and sponsored a cultural exchange trip to Yarrabah in Cairns. Members participated in mock job interviews

at Carwatha College, presented scholarships to eight students for their transition from primary school to year seven, gave $1000 scholarships to two VCE students, and paid for four year nine students from Nazareth Secondary College to attend the three-day science experience at Monash University. The club helped two Noble Park Secondary College students to participate in a model United Nations assembly, collected desks for a school in Timor Leste, and spent $9600 to provide books to 114 pre-primary aged children through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Noble Park Rotarians are now working with Keysborough College to form an Interact Club another Rotary off-shoot which is designed to get kids co-ordinating volunteer projects. Mr Damon said a sister club relationship with Rotarians in Kofu, Japan, could provide opportunities for the students. Call Mr Damon on 0408 766 643 to get involved with the club.

Ron Damon grew up on a market garden in Noble Park. “We had a 60-acre property and we lived across the road from the Corrigans,” he said. “Our family was among the biggest cauliflower growers in the state at the time.” In 1975 he joined Rotaract, the Rotary offshoot for 18 to 30-year-olds. “I became hooked on the community service what Rotary and Rotaract stood for,” he said. Mr Damon, now a Cranbourne resident, became a fully-fledged Rotarian on 10 January 1985 and on Friday 1 July became the Rotary Club of Noble Park president. “I’ve been president before in 1991-92. This is my second go at it,” he said. “I’m the fourth president that’s been recycled!” Like many other Rotary Clubs, membership is a strong focus for the 21-member Noble Park group. “We’re really only getting 18 of those 21 turn up,” Mr Damon said. “But I believe that by embracing the Keysborough area more - because there’s no Rotary Club in Keysborough anymore - we can pick up from the new businesses and residents. “There’s more people that live in that area now than when we were chartered,” he said. “We just want more hands-on people. The more hands we’ve got the more we can achieve. “It’s up to you how much you want to get involved. “We know people have got families and people have got other interests. “We want Rotary to be part of your life.” The Rotary International president decided the organisation’s theme for the year ahead would be ‘Rotary serving humanity’. “That’s our aim, to serve humanity - whether that be local, national or international. “We’re non-religious, non-political. “We’re a community service club. “Our aim is to support and to help people, people that we feel need our help. “That’s what we want to do, that’s what

Exhibition is clothed in culture By CASEY NEILL Colourful paper clothing will explore culture in Dandenong’s Harmony Square next month. Olinda artist Anzara Clarke produced Making Culture with about seven teenage girls at South East Community Links at Springvale. Their works range from accessories to fullsized garments and reflect ideas about culture. “It might be their own personal culture, in terms of their history and tradition, or it might be music culture, it might be youth culture,” Anzara said. “We didn’t put a limit on how they define culture, but that’s what the garments were to depict. “They were also able to see other people’s ideas of culture. It extends their thinking in quite an organic way.” The creations will be on display in the Harmony Square exhibition boxes, outside Dandenong Library, throughout August as part of the Greater Dandenong Council Cultural Threads project. “It was quite interesting to watch them through the process,” she said. “Each of them has taken a different approach to the way they’ve used the paper. “They gravitated towards something that spoke to them. “Some used sewing machines for the first time. “It was a really nice space for them to really engage in different ways and do something different to their daily life. “I think they’re all pretty excited. “They have to go home and think of artist statement to go with their work.” She said they also picked up problem-solving skills. “The solution is not always an obvious one. Sometimes you need to experiment and think a bit differently,” she said. “I think art is fantastic for that.” Anzara was living in Tasmania and planning a move to Victoria when she applied for the artist in residency project held at Dandenong’s Heritage Hill. “I use the garment form pretty much exclusively,” she said.

Anzara Clarke in her studio in Olinda with dresses that will form part of her Cultural Threads exhibition. “A lot of my ideas are about culture and identity and human experience. “I work a lot in paper.” She found out about Cultural Threads through the application process and jumped at the chance for community engagement. “I do love the community-based art projects as well as my own work,” she said. “They create a space for people to really stretch and explore themselves.” She said working in a studio could be quite a solitary experience.

“It’s nice to balance that out with some of that community engagement.” The month-long Cultural Threads will build on its 2014 incarnation and celebrate textile art and cultural diversity. The City of Greater Dandenong-hosted event will feature knitting, crocheting, dyeing, weaving, needlepoint, yarn art and other skills. People of all ages and backgrounds will be guided by some of Australia’s most celebrated artists to forge connections, trade skills, share stories and interweave cultures.

Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS There’ll be activities at multiple venues including the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens, the Drum Theatre, the Dandenong and Springvale libraries and Harmony Square. Intricate and colourful installations will adorn the municipality throughout Cultural Threads, which is a satellite event of Craft Victoria’s Craft Cubed Festival. Anzara will be the artist in residence at Heritage Hill Museum and Historical Gardens, 66 McCrae Street, Dandenong, from August to October.

ticle on the suburb by Hannie Rayson in the Saturday Age on 9 July. The 59-year-old had never been to Dandenong and was moved during her time at the market and Drum Theatre. “So what does multiculturalism mean to me? Sheer inspiration,” she concluded.

Councillor Maria Sampey urged Greater Dandenong council staff to follow Judge Judy’s lead during the Monday 11 July meeting. Her calls for a division – a record in the minutes of how each councillor voted on a motion - initially went unheeded, possibly because her microphone was not switched on. When the request finally broke through, a frustrated Cr Sampey complained she’d made the call three times. “Replay the tape – Judge Judy would,” she said.

The perils of sharing your car, eh! A 49-year-old parent faced court with a string of unpaid traffic infringements including red lights and serious speeding offences - all adding up to $8900. The accused took full responsibility for the offences but mentioned he shared the car with his 29-year-old son.

Councillor Jim Memeti wants Greater Dandenong Council to get a gimmicky phone number. He spotted a number on a nearby real estate agency office that ended in Dandenong’s postcode – 3175 – and asked officers to find out if the council could find a similar number, saying it would stick in people’s minds. Cr Memeti raised several issues he’d encountered on a drive through Dandenong, including gridlock which meant his one kilometre drive home took 15 minutes. “Why don’t you walk?” several of his colleagues laughed. “In Dandenong, there are more than 150 ways to say welcome,” started a positive ar-

Self-defence was no excuse for a woman convicted for arming herself with pepper spray. At a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing, a judge said there might be many defensive reasons for a woman to carry the spray but it was not a permitted weapon. The woman, who works for a medical supplies company, was fined $350.

Pokemon Go hasn’t caused a recorded accident on Greater Dandenong’s roads - yet. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts said: “I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. “Anything that distracts people in and around vehicles - whether you’re driving or a pedestrian - has to be dangerous,” he said. “It’s fine to go catching Pokemon but if you end up in a hospital bed you won’t be catching many.”

It was a double case of doing a double-take when a man locked in police cells was brought into the wrong Dandenong Magistrates’ courtroom not once but twice on 11 July. The man seemed to have been quite the social butterfly in custody. As he was erroneously led out into the dock, he recognised the accused already standing before the judge, called out to him by name and wished him luck in his case. The judge scolded the accused for starting to make a name for himself in the criminal world. “How many people have people come out of the cells and say ‘G’day! Good luck!’” the magistrate said. “It’s all about who you know.”

Cooing pigeons wooing council By CASEY NEILL Doveton’s pigeon club needs a hand to keep its birds dry. The Dandenong Racing Pigeon Club (DRPC) hosted Casey Councillor Wayne Smith at its Power Reserve headquarters on Friday 24 June. DRPC stalwart Joe Phillips recently donated a truck and bird baskets worth about $300,000, to give back to the sport that’s given him enjoyment for 52 years. During the visit, secretary Chris McDonald asked Cr Smith to consider allocating council funding for a base outside the shed to accommodate the truck and shelter overhead to protect the pigeons from rain. The club has 32 members and was established about 1969. Mr McDonald lives in Hallam and has been with the club since 1986. “It’s a real sport. It’s something a lot of men do when they get a bit older and they can’t play footy and cricket,” he said. DRPC president Keith Flentjar, from Endeavour Hills, joined in 2000 after holding a life-long interest in birds and trying his hand at greyhound racing. “When you retire you’ve got to have something to make you get out of bed,” he said. Flyers breed and tend their pigeons at home, and bring them to the club for transportation to the race starting point. “We had 1200 in here last week,” Mr Flentjar said. Each bird has a rubber ring or electronic chip on their leg that time-stamps their return home. “It’s the quickest velocity from when they’re released to when they get home that wins,” he said. “It gets down to split seconds. “Generally in the first batch of pigeons there’s four or five. Those five pigeons will be within a metre of each other depending on where they live.“ The club holds races every Saturday from June to November, some starting as far afield as the New South Wales-Queensland border. “At the moment, we’re racing in Wycheproof,

Keith Fletjar and Chrystal the pigeon. 156447 260kms,” Mr Flentjar said. “Our next race point’s Ouyen, then we go to Mildura, Coombah, Fowler’s Gap – that’s 500 miles – and Tibooburra is usually our 600. “I finished third in a Tibooburra race ... in 10 hours and 15 minutes. “That’s nearly 900 kilometres. “There have been some other quicker races.

There was a Cobar race that was four hours. That’s 400 miles, doing 100mph. “The wind is the dominant factor. They fly 70km/h with no wind.” Don’t the birds get tired? “Not the good ones,” Mr Flentjar said. No one knows exactly how they know the way home.

“They’ve done all the experiments, and it’s got something to do with the earth’s magnetism,” he said. “The races that affect them is if we have bad electrical storms. That affects their radar. “You’ve sort of got to break them in. “When they’ve first hatched, you let them out around the loft and they get themselves home through instinct. After that they’re home for life.”

Baggios breaking fresh ground By CASEY NEILL Tucked away on Riverend Road in Bangholme is Greater Dandenong’s only winery. The Craft and Co concept started when Lisa Baggio’s parents-in-law came to Australia from Italy. Lou started out making vats and presses for friends and opened a shop in North Melbourne, stocking supplies for homemade food and beverages. “My husband Paul took that concept further and decided he wanted to branch out into commercial winemaking equipment,” Ms Baggio said. He diversified to breweries and packaging and water plants, and today he’s added coffee roasting and meat curing equipment to his product range. The Baggios opened The Craft and Co in Collingwood in December last year “as a showroom for his customers”. It features a brewery, a coffee roaster, cheese and meat-curing rooms, a restaurant and more. The Craft and Co Farm opened in Bangholme in early June. “The idea behind this place is that everything we grow and produce here will be split between here and Collingwood,” Ms Baggio said. “We’ve got the winery out the back. We’re preparing the soil for a massive vegetable garden, a hop garden for the brewery... “All their waste will come back here for our chook feed and compost. “We’ll be this little sustainable ecosystem. “We’ve got a licence for a couple of pigs that will eventually go to the meat room for salami.” Ms Baggio plans to introduce workshops and “grand-scale events” down the track with ideas already on the table including salami-making classes, an Octoberfest celebration and a sausage festival. “There’s already a cellar door and there’s

Lisa Baggio among the vines. wine and beer tasting,” she said. “You can do a tour of the winery and the vines.” The Nine Dragons Horse Club next door is going to start trail rides in spring. “The trail ride will finish through our vineyard,” Ms Baggio said. “They’ll tie up the horses here and included in the trail ride will be a lunch.

“We want this to become a destination.” The Craft and Co crew currently brew a stout and a pilsner in Collingwood and hope to one day brew beer in Bangholme, too. “We have to grow our own hops before we can even think about it,” Ms Baggio said. But the wine is already on its way. “Our 2016 vintage, all the grapes are from here.

It’s in barrels and tanks at the moment,” she said. “We didn’t have access to the vines until this year. “We have a nero d’aovla we produced here with grapes from Heathcote.” Craft and Co’s winemaker Rory Lane worked with the Baggios years earlier. “The landlord here told him he didn’t want to keep looking after the vines,” Ms Baggio said. “Rory contacted my husband Paul and said ‘would you be interested in taking over the lease for the vineyard?’. “We were setting up the Collingwood site at the time. “It just seemed like the most natural progression. “It’s really paddock to plate and paddock to glass.” Lisa said the winery was also open to contract wine makers. “They bring their own grapes but they use our facilities,” she said. There are 11 grape varieties growing across the 14-acre vineyard. “This is all reclaimed swamp land originally, so there’s plenty of water, which is good for growing grapes,” Mr Lane said. “The soil is quite heavy and clay-based but because we’re quite close to the beach there’s also quite a bit of sand in the soil too. “The balance is quite good. There’s good drainage but there’s enough clay in there to hold a good amount of water.” The ground water also produces big canopies with lots of foliage. “The more foliage, the quicker things ripen,” he said. “So we do have to manage the amount of foliage, make sure that things don’t ripen too quickly. “All in all, for what you wouldn’t consider to be typical wine-growing country, it does quite well with a number of different varieties.”

Clay pots bring breath of fresh air for Bangholme’s crafty winemakers By CASEY NEILL The Craft and Co will release its first Bangholmegrown wines later this year. Winemaker Rory Lane said they’d include a viognier, a pinot noir, and a blend. A giant clay pot stands out from the barrels and stainless steel tanks at the Riverend Road farm. “Rather than maturing it in wood or stainless steel, it’s clay, terracotta. They’re made in Tuscany in Italy,” he said. “Stainless steel doesn’t let any air through. Wood lets quite a bit through, depending on the age of the wood. “The older the barrel, the less it lets through because, essentially, they get clogged up with wine. “It also depends on the vessel’s size as well. “The bigger the vessel is, typically the smaller the transfer of air through that vessel.

“Big containers oxidise a lot slower, smaller containers oxidise a lot quicker.” Mr Lane said the terracotta amphora held 800 litres. “It will be quite a slow rate of maturation but not as slow as a stainless steel tank of the same size,” he said. “Because the terracotta is not very uniform and it’s all hand-made so the thickness varies a little bit, they seal the inside with beeswax and you do get a very slight beeswax character that comes through in the wine.” Rory is looking forward to playing with the 11 different grape varieties grown at the site to produce blends. “There’s shiraz there but also viognier, and in one particular regional in the northern Rhone Valley they blend a little bit of the white variety, viognier, with the shiraz,” he said. “That helps to lift perfume and lighten the wine a little bit.

“There are certain pigments in white grape skins that almost paradoxically help to fix the colour in red grape skins, so if you mix a bit of white grapes in with the red grapes the colour fixes better. “You could do a northern Rhone Valley blend, you could do a southern Rhone Valley blend with grenache, mourvedre and shiraz. “You could do a Bordeaux-style blend of the cabernet varieties. “Then there’s pinot noir as well, which has always typically been a straight variety. “So for me it’s interesting to see what different proportions of the different varieties work best.” Mr Lane said each variety would differ in quality each year. “Which variety ends up being the best on average I’m not sure yet,” he said. “I think the shiraz is going to be pretty good here.

Winemaker Rory Lane with a terracotta wine vessel. “We’re not that far from Mornington, so the pinot’s going to be pretty good. “The grenache is a real dark horse, that’s my favourite at the moment. “It will produce a slightly lighter style but it’s really aromatic.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Plant set to recycle soil By CASEY NEILL A Dandenong South company could reduce landfill waste thanks to a new licence to recycle soil. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) issued RENEX Group with the permits to recycle contaminated soil. EPA’s Tim Faragher said the Ordish Road business could now operate a state-of-the-art soil thermal treatment and recycling facility. “Under its EPA licence, RENEX Group will be able to treat about 70,000 tonnes of contaminated soil per year and store up to 20,000 tonnes of contaminated soil and 22,000 litres of prescribed industrial waste liquids and convert it into re-useable material,” he said. “Depending on the soil, after treatment it could be categorised as fill material and be used for any soil purpose such as in gardens, parks, landscaping or construction. “The facility will use the liquid waste as an alternative fuel.” Mr Faragher said granting the company an EPA licence would also reduce the amount of hazardous waste being disposed of at landfills. “The company has produced technology that allows hydrocarbons to be removed from soil, which means many thousands of tonnes of contaminated soil can be put to good use rather than buried in the ground,” he said. Mr Faragher said that before its licence was issued, RENEX Group had already gone through the EPA works approval process. “A works approval is a document issued by EPA permitting, subject to certain conditions, the construction of a plant, the installation of equipment or the modification of a process,” he said. “A works approval is required for industrial and waste management activities that have the potential for significant environmental impact. “After numerous works and commissioning

RENEX CEO Marinos Angelodemou. 156696 approvals, the facility in Dandenong South is now licensed to accept, store and treat this prescribed industrial waste.” RENEX CEO Marinos Angelodemou said the company was established in 2008 and following a lengthy planning permit and EPA process, started building on its four-hectare site in mid-2012. Greater Dandenong Council rejected a permit for the plant but the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal overturned the decision. “Successful commissioning of the treatment

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS plant was completed in January 2016,” Mr Angelodemou said. It’s Australia’s first large-scale integrated waste treatment and resource recovery facility and will use technology developed in Germany. He said RENEX was considering expansion plans as market demand for its services was expected to increase in the medium term. “We have approximately two hectares of vacant land available at the facility for future expansion,” he said.

Scrooge cut Christmas pay Dandenong restaurant workers were among almost 250 who were underpaid their Christmas Day entitlements. The operator of a dozen restaurants across Melbourne will have to pay staff $21,700 following Fair Work Ombudsman intervention. The largest individual underpayment was $181. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the restaurant operator mistakenly believed they could declare Christmas Day a shut-down rather than pay permanent employees for a day off for a public holiday. She said Fair Work inspectors believed the employer made a genuine error and co-operated with the agency so avoided enforcement action. But Ms James said the case highlighted the importance of employers taking the necessary steps to ensure they understood the wage rates applicable to their employees, including penalty rates. “Our website can assist employers and workers alike understand and comply with their rights and obligations so there aren’t any issues arising around public holidays,” she said. Ms James said most underpayments were inadvertent and the result of employers failing to check their minimum obligations under workplace laws. “When we find errors, our preference is to educate employers about their obligations and assist them to put processes in place to ensure the mistakes are not repeated,” she said. The Pokemon home for sale at 26 Merrick Street, Keysborough. “How do you get more buyers through your home? You Pokemon.” Barry Plant Keysborough real estate agent Ben Nguyen is hoping to cash in on the Pokemon Go craze for a Keysborough home-owner. In what he thinks could be a world-first for a real estate pitch, he’ll list 26 Merrick Street with a Pokemon-themed script he said was packed with 10 Pokemon references in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. “I hope that with the references of current interest we can generate more inquiry and inter-

est, which will ultimately lead to a higher selling price,” he said. The listing started: “For the first time in almost 35 years, this family home full of fond memories and has so much quality that is truly onyxpected.” “As you enter the front door, on the Raichu will notice an L-shaped living room.” “The piece de resistance is the outdoor concreted alfresco which provides the perfect place to spend your summer evee-nings. “This property is sure to charmander-ttract even the fussiest of buyers.”

Mr Nguyen said the best part about the property was Pokestops and a Pokemon gym within one kilometre, and a key feature was psyduck-ted heating. The augmented reality app-based game has attracted millions of users around the world since launching on Wednesday 6 July. Players can capture, battle, and train virtual creatures called Pokemon, which appear throughout the real world through the use of their phone’s GPS and camera.

Carpentry apprentice shortlisted for top state award A Chisholm apprentice is in the running to be named the state’s best. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert announced the finalists for this year’s Victorian Training Awards on Tuesday 12 July. Danielle Kazi-Shedden, 24, was among four shortlisted for the Victorian Apprentice of the Year title. The Journal reported in May that the Chisholm Dandenong student was doing things a

little differently and picking up plenty of awards along the way. She’s since popped up on promotional billboards and bus shelter posters for the TAFE. Danielle didn’t achieve the Year 12 results she wanted and spent nine months unemployed before landing a job at Jayco in Dandenong South. Over the next three years, she tried her hand at different roles and discovered an interest in joinery and carpentry.

“From there I was looking for an apprenticeship and found this shop-fitting role with Whytehall,” she said. Last year she won Chisholm’s Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year, and was then nominated for a Master Builders’ award. “I was a little bit in shock at the time, it didn’t really sink in,“ she said.

A Dandenong teacher is among 15 across the state to receive a VET training boost. A Trainer and Assessor Academic Grant will provide Megan Turner, who teaches at Chisholm online, with up to $8000 towards a diploma or higher education qualification in Victorian Vocational Education and Training (VET) training and assessment. “As well as financial support to undertake study, award recipients will receive significant on-the-job mentoring and professional development opportunities which will help them grow as VET teachers,” Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said. The new State Government grants are part of a $1 million initiative to support high-quality teachers and followed last year’s Review of Quality Assurance in Victoria’s VET System.

Dandenong basketball icon Penny Taylor has been picked for her third Olympic Games. 130928

Taylor has got her eyes on the top of the podium By JARROD POTTER While there’s been a changing of the guard in the Opals’ line-up, the Australian women’s basketball team has called in Penny Taylor to shore up the side’s experience. Dandenong WNBL great Taylor, 35, originally from Belgrave South, will join the Opals for her third Olympic campaign after missing London 2012 with injury. She hasn’t pulled any punches about the side’s ambitions either – Taylor isn’t going over to Brazil without an eye on the top of the podium. “Gold is always the goal at an Olympic Games but we know there is a long way to getting the chance to play for that gold medal,” Taylor said on rio2016.olympics.com.au. “We have a strong team and a very similar team to what we had at the 2014 World Champi-

onships and I think (coach) Brendan (Joyce) has done a wonderful job implementing a system that we love being a part of. “We play Brazil first up and playing the home side in the first game is always going to be a huge challenge in itself.” Taylor will add to her Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 campaigns – after she was ruled out of London 2012 following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). “London was always a motivator to make Rio but it was also motivation to get healthy and get back playing with the girls,” Taylor said. They’ll have to knock over the odds-on favourites in the USA as well as power-packed sides like France and Spain, but Taylor believes the side can go the distance even against the amazing Americans. “They are the defending gold medallists and are the pinnacle of our sport,” Taylor said.

“They’re always who we see as our biggest competitor and we just want to give ourselves another chance to get in a position to be able to face them.” Australia has been a dominant side on the world stage since 1996, with the Opals winning medals at the last five games – with three silvers in Sydney, Beijing and Athens as well as two bronzes in London and Atlanta. Former Dandenong Ranger Leilani Mitchell was also picked for the 12-woman side along with Dandenong junior Liz Cambage, Rachel Jarry, Laura Hodges, Erin Phillips, Marianna Tolo, Katie-Rae Ebzery, Natalie Burton, Tessa Lavey, Steph Talbot and Cayla George. In Boomers news, Endeavour Hills champion centre Andrew Bogut is set to race the clock to be fit for Rio after he sustained bone bruising in his leg in the NBA finals series.

As a new Victorian racing year commences on 1 August, the Melbourne Racing Club will continue to offer free admission for all Wednesday meetings at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown. That means that of the 35 meetings to be run at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown, in the 2016-2017 season, 30 of them will offer free admission. The first race meeting in a busy year at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown, will be staged on Sunday 7 August which will see the running of the 134th $200,000 Grand National Hurdle (3900 metres) and the $125,000 Crisp Steeplechase (3900 metres). The major feature date will be Sandown Spring Carnival Race Day on Saturday 12 November featuring the Sandown Guineas, Zipping Classic, Eclipse Stakes and Sandown Cup at the conclusion of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Sandown Guineas, for three-yearolds, has an impressive reputation for producing future star gallopers. The Zipping Classic was formerly the Sandown Classic which had originally been known as the Sandown Cup. The Melbourne Racing Club changed the name to recognise the incredible feat of Zipping to win his fourth successive Sandown Classic in November 2010. By doing so Zipping became only the fourth horse in Australian racing history to win the same Group race four or more years in succession. The previous horses to do it were Lord (Group 2 Memsie Stakes 1958-61), Manikato (Group 2 William Reid Stakes 197983) and Tie The Knot (Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes 1999-02). In 2010, the new Sandown Cup was introduced over 3200 metres and the race becomes a qualifying event for the following year’s Melbourne Cup and in time it is sure to become a major event on the calendar. The other feature days are highlighted by some of Australia’s premier jumping events. The Grand National Hurdle and Crisp Steeplechase open the season with the Australian Hurdle and Australian Steeplechase to be run on Saturday 27 May 2017 at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown. Next May will mark the 136th running of the two premier jumping events, which are two of the oldest events on the Victorian racing calendar. The day is also the only Saturday metropolitan jumps meeting on the Victorian calendar. Those two events are major lead-ups to the two biggest jumping events in Australia to be run in August. Other feature days are Christmas Eve and Easter Monday.

SEJ rewrites the rules as it grows its umpiring team Significant work has been put into developing the umpires in the South East Juniors. This work has paid off with the numbers in the South East Juniors Umpiring list growing from 186 to 305 since 2013. The South East Juniors Umpiring Team is led by Rod Hamilton, SEJ Umpiring Manager. He, together with his dedicated team, meets weekly to develop the umpires to ensure they have the skills and knowledge on how to umpire the games in the South East Juniors competition. This year, the South East Juniors Umpiring Team was fortunate to secure two new training venues which allows for more flexibility in the delivery of the training across more of the region. On Wednesday nights, training is done at Heatherbrae Reserve, Officer, and on Thursday nights at Carlisle Park, Cranbourne, which is a purpose built synthetic sports field.

Carlisle Park’s surface guarantees that training can be held without worrying about the condition of the ground degrading. SEJ Umpiring also provides umpires to schools for their football clinics and sports days, SSV Premier football for the Hallam Academy and SSV for year seven to year 12 for schools throughout the south eastern suburbs. Umpires are also supplied for SSV Primary School Championships. SEJ umpires also officiated in the Metro and Subway Championships. The SEJ Umpiring Team is also community minded. In 2015 it raised $5000 for Ronald McDonald House and sponsored a room at the house for the residents to stay. Twenty SEJ umpires also went in and cooked for the residents for the evening, which was a great way to instil community values into the

17 teenage umpires in attendance. The team also went down to the Christmas party and ran activities for the kids at the hospital. “The success of our growth is through word of mouth,” Hamilton said. “We have a good team environment and we try to get to know the parents and explain to them how their children are doing in their development. “We try to be flexible and schedule umpires in ways that supports their needs as 80 per cent of our umpires are under 25 years of age.” SEJ Umpiring has opened up umpiring pathway opportunities too as six out of the 25 girls in the Victorian Women’s Umpiring Academy come from the SEJ Umpiring Team. Those interested in joining the SEJ Umpiring team can contact Rod Hamilton via umpiring@ southeastjuniors.com.au.

Papavs perseverance makes SEABL 300-club By JARROD POTTER SEABL - ROUND 15 There was no fairytale victory for Clare Papavs in her 300th SEABL clash after Kilsyth stormed back into the clash not once, or twice, but thrice. Returning to the place where she found her feet in basketball, as a Kilsyth junior, Papavs received a warm welcome from the home team ... at least before and after the match. Aside from those pleasantries it was game on as Dandenong shot out with its three-point game dialled in early. After pushing the lead to 12 at the half - on the back of some dynamite long-range shooting off Rachel Antonadiou (13 points) and an amazing inside/outside effort from centre Lauren Scherf (15 points, 18 rebounds) - the Rangers look set to canter home and give Papavs something to celebrate. But that wasn’t on the cards for the Cobras as they endured the worst of the onslaught. Dandenong couldn’t finish the job after the main break, with a disastrous run of turnovers, misses and back-court errors opening an opportunity for Kilsyth to strike. But the Rangers fired back ... and fired back again to build the lead and try to hold it this time around. But no matter what it did, or how far the lead stretched, Dandenong couldn’t shut the door on Kilsyth’s fight-back. It would be a pair of well-known faces at Dandenong to scorch the Rangers; as WNBL captain Steph Cumming (16 points) willed her side back in the clash. Former Dandenong WNBL player Rosie Moult (14 points, 10 rebounds) had a monstrous last term though - stealing the show as she started raining threes, making steals and clasping some massive rebounds against Scherf, Jacinta Kennedy and Chloe Bibby. Papavs (seven points, four rebounds) didn’t sit a second in her milestone match, but even her herculean efforts manning the skilful Jasmine Gill (15 points) weren’t enough to drag the Rangers to victory. After reaching her SEABL triple-century - split between Kilsyth and Dandenong - in a glittering career with five SEABL championships, there was plenty to take in for the Dandenong dynamo. “Today I got a little bit emotional thinking about the journey I’ve been through and some of the stuff I’ve been through and overcome,” Papavs said. “Some of the mental battles when you’re not playing well and keeping yourself motivated and playing season in, season out playing SEABL and WNBL back-to-back, it can take its toll on you mentally. “The fact that the game was at Kilsyth - it couldn’t have been planned any more perfectly and I thank Kilsyth for giving me my start and Dandenong for allowing me to continue this career I’ve had and it’s not ending any time soon.” Looking ahead remains her focus ... as the

Clare Papavs celebrates with her biggest fans after her 300th SEABL match. 156671 tongue-in-cheek nature of Dandenong’s SEABL star shone through even in defeat. “I’m going to go out tonight (Saturday) and celebrate with the girls and just make the most of it,” Papavs said. “Maybe I’ll think about it all (the career) in another 200 games time.” She wanted to thank her family, friends as well as the Dandenong and Kilsyth basketball communities for their support. Dandenong’s men had a far better time though, stitching up the Cobras 82-75 in the second match of the evening. It came on the back of enormous games from Andrew Harms (28 points, 10 rebounds) and Daequon Montreal (20 points, nine rebounds).

Dandenong faces Bendigo at home on Saturday evening. In BIG V results, Keysborough’s men kept their slim season hopes alive with a 70-67 win over the high-flying Shepparton Gators, but not after they were shut down in the fourth term. The Cougars only managed seven points after the final change, but had enough in the tank to take the triumph on the back of efforts from Calvin Enge (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Ben Morwood (16 points). The women’s side lost 54-81 to Blackburn as Genevieve Abbott (21 points, 13 rebounds) starred with a double-double alongside Amy Leslie (17 points).

Noble blast past Norwood By JARROD POTTER EFL DIVISION 1 - ROUND 13 Riding the rollercoaster, Noble Park’s up and down season is soaring once again following a 15-point victory over Norwood. Missed opportunities highlighted the first term as Noble Park stole it back from the hosts time and time again ... but did nothing with it. The forwards and midfielders squandered the back-line’s dogged work to keep the likes of Leigh Williams (five goals) and Jordan Clarke (two goals) from getting too much of it. With mistakes mounting, coach Mick Fogarty gave the side both barrels at the quarter-time break - demanding they lift or risk letting its finals chances slipping away. The surge came on schedule from the first bounce of the second term as Noble Park started to fire. Piva Wright (one goal) seemingly ran through brick walls to give Fogarty something up forward and as a pinch-hitting ruck. His efforts, alongside the evergreen Craig Anderson and a fleet of other strong-willed midfielders, saw the intensity get raised yet again. Neither side gave an inch, leaving to a hotly contested match that threatened to boil over a few times with a few skirmishes part of a game that both sides were desperate to win. The Bulls had the Norsemen on a platter through the third - booting away as Tim Harper (four goals) stole the show up forward ... mostly. He was clean on the lead, sharp on a set-shot ... but Harper’s missed shot running unopposed into the goalsquare summed up the second half for the Bulls. They had the chances to blow the game apart, but failed to make the most of them and gave the hosts one last charge to revive its finals prospects. They booted four goals in rapid succession to start the fourth term as the visitors sprayed them from everywhere. It took the cool, calm Vergim Faik to take a mark on the goal-line, go back on a severe angle and slot the match-defining goal to drive home the 13.15 (93) to 12.6 (78) victory. “I haven’t been this fired up for a number of years and what it tells me personally is that I’ve still got a great passion for coaching and this footy club and was probably as animated as fired up as I’ve been for four years,” Fogarty said. “We understand that they’re going to come at us at a million miles an hour physically and I thought we stood up really well in the second part of the second quarter and started hitting the scoreboard. Faik had 27 hit outs as well in a superb effort for the Bulls alongside usual suspects Kyle Martin (29 possessions), Ben Giobbi and Sam Monaghan while Sean Corrigan and Tyson Mitchem featured in the best.

Dandenong Thunder struck its first NPL 2 defeat By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 21 There was nothing to smile about for the Greater Dandenong NPL 2 sides after a trio of defeats rocked Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles. The ladder leading Thunder was shocked most of all in its 1-2 home loss to mid-table Box Hill United. With experienced bookends Simon Colosimo and Veton Korcari on the sidelines, it forced Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic to draw on the depths of his bench-stock. Contuining their stellar seasons, Nick Modaffari and Faisal Sakhizada held up the back end in Colosimo’s absence, with decent support from Fitim Ibrahimi and Antonio Barbaro. It would be opened by the opposition approaching the half though as Ben Osei-Safo (35’) carved his way into the scoresheet. Thunder’s mercurial striker Brandon Barnes (39’) didn’t falter when he was sent to the penalty spot a few minutes later as he absolutely smashed 44 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 18 July, 2016

his 33rd goal of the season into the back of the net and left the scoreline 1-1. It would remain level for the best part of an hour as both sides had their chances. Box Hill’s Osei-Safo put another one into the back just after the resumption ... but was called off-side to the jeers and cheers of either team’s supporters. Barnes was creative up forward, bringing his wings into the game with a couple of deft passes from the top of the box, but when they didn’t work Barnes took it on himself to weave some magic. He was cruelly denied by a couple of amazing saves from Keegan Coulter as his left foot cannoned plenty at the Mustangs’ keeper. Needing a spark off the bench, Box Hill found it in Abel Freesha (87’) who broke the equal footing to also break Thunder hearts and end the unbeaten streak. Dandenong had a few more attempts in the dying stages, with a couple of contentious calls not touched by the referee, but there was nothing more the host side could do as the whistle sounded on its first defeat of 2016.

An early penalty to John Pykett (26’) pushed Springvale White Eagles ahead, but in the end the Eastern Lions roared back to life to boot two goals in five minutes across a blistering second half. Dandenong City’s NPL promotion hopes look dashed after a 0-1 heartbreaking loss at home, following a 90th minute penalty awarded to Brunswick City. It leaves City 13 points adrift of Kingston City heading into the last seven rounds ... . and it only gets worse as City has to face Kingston City on Saturday. Thunder hosts Goulburn Valley Suns on Saturday evening while Springvale heads away to battle Box Hill United. In the state leagues, South Springvale was smashed 0-3 by Manningham United Blues, Doveton had a 1-0 win over Caulfield United Cobras. Springvale City surged 3-1 ahead over Bayside, Hampton Park United knocked off crosstowners Endeavour Hills Fire 2-1, Noble Park did likewise against Lyndale United 4-0 as did Dandenong South with a 3-2 triumph over Keysborough. White Star Dandenong bested Casey Panthers 4-1 as Gianni Allebi booted a hat-trick.

Randle’s drive through the pack

Conquering the famous Spa-Francorchamps, Thomas Randle claimed his second F3 triumph. “It all started at the beginning of the final lap –Toby tried to hold me up so I wouldn’t get a good run, which is what anyone would do in that position. “The tow really helped me and about 300

metres from the chicane I was ahead. “Once I got into the lead I was just focusing on putting in a really good middle sector so he wouldn’t have a chance to get me into the final chicane.”

Out-of-the-box Tycoon shows that he means business By JASON ADAMS Bruce Tycoon captured his and his owners’ first group race win when taking out the McKenna Memorial. He sprung out of box two and set up a commanding lead and showed no signs of stopping as he went on to win by two and three-quarters in 34.10. “He’s done everything right from day one. He’s free-for-all class at both city tracks, we’ve been looking to step him up to 595m for a little while but nothing was around until heats of the McKenna,” Peter Riley said. “I’d say he’s underrated but how can you underrate a greyhound that has won over $100,000. “He’s a dog everyone would love to have in their kennel - he’s got a wonderful personality and just loves to race.” Bruce Tycoon, or Bruce as he’s known to connections, exceeded expectations of his owner Gary Micallef. “It was unexpected - I thought the red was go-

Bruce Tycoon was in charge of the McKenna Memorial on Thursday night, winning by nearly three lengths. ing to be hard to beat. I didn’t think Bruce would run the distance as well as he did,” Micallef said. Bruce Tycoon is owned and bred by the Odds and Evens syndicate consisting of Gary, his brother Phil and late father Charlie who passed away

in March last year. “Luckily dad got to see Bruce win his maiden before he passed away. I carry his ring when I’m hoping for some luck - I’m wearing it around my neck tonight. I also wore it when Bruce won here in March, which was on the anniversary of dad’s death. It’s a bit surreal.” New Year’s Punch, Bruce Tycoon’s mother, now resides at Micallef ’s mother’s house along with former top line chaser New Tibur, or Jimmy as he’s known at home. “When Bruce retires he has a kennel waiting for him at my place,” Micallef said. The McKenna Memorial is named in honour of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club’s first administrator, Jack McKenna. ‘Mulga’ McKenna was regarded as a doyen of racing administrators in that era and held the position from the club’s formation in 1956 until he died in 1970. The Sandown Greyhound Racing Club will celebrate its 60th birthday on Thursday 8 September.

Randle’s victory leaves him third in the championship – sitting on 335 points – as he’s now only 19 points adrift of leader Ricky Collard, with the penultimate round held at Snetterton in Norwich, UK.

Thomas Randle claimed his second BRDC British F3 win after a stunning drive through the field at the famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps course. Randle, 20, from Narre Warren North, had slim hopes of victory in Race Two at the illustrious Belgian track after starting from ninth. Having to work his way back up through the pack, around the intricate seven-kilometre course, the former Australian Formula Ford champion produced arguably one of the best performances of his career. He launched into his chase of the leaders from the get-go - Randle made a strong start which saw him latch onto the podium fight in the early laps. He soon found himself chasing leader Toby Sowery but faced a 1.6-second deficit with three laps remaining. The former Australian Formula 4 driver continued to push which saw him eat into Sowery’s advantage to set up a grandstand finish for the final lap. Randle, who scored his maiden F3 win at Rockingham in May, completed a pass for the lead on the Kemmel Straight before going on take the chequered flag by a scant 0.4 of a second from Sowery and Tarun Reddy. “The first lap was where it all started,” Randle said. “I made a good start and got two cars into turn one and then got another two down the Kemmel Straight. “I really tried to keep my head down, keep it clean and I had a really good battle with Enaam Ahmed my team-mate, Matheus Leist and Tarun Reddy. “I think the hardest thing about the race was trying to break the tow because if you could do that you had a good chance of winning.” Heading into the final few turns, Randle aimed to latch onto Sowery and use the tow in to his advantage. “On the last lap I was hoping I could get on to the back of Toby Sowery and we had a great battle for the win.
