Coach steps up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Coaches Larry Guerra, left, and James Kerr, right, with players and their victory medals. the ADRA 2015 and 2016 tournaments in Dandenong, and the 2016 Casey basketball tournament. Mr Kerr espouses the value of teamwork –“nothing moves forward without teamwork” – and leadership skills. Mr Kerr said all of the players easily have the talent to play high-school basketball in the US. It just comes down to creating “proper pathways”. Many people talk it but are not providing it, Mr Kerr said. “They’re amazing, and they don’t get the recognition they deserve.

“There’s no structure in basketball at schools – it’s just footy.” To travel to the US, they need trusted people to embed them and make them feel at home, Mr Kerr said. “I have them for just two hours a week. I feed them as much chocolate milk and nutrition as I can get,” Mr Kerr says. “Imagine what they can achieve if I had them every day after school, with a full nutritional program, a strength and conditioning program. “I’ve got a lot of kids who want to run with us but I’ve only got one court.”

It didn’t take long for James Kerr to spot the buckets of talent in these Hallam-trained slam-dunking proteges. Two years ago, a group of 16-year-olds needed a coach to play in a Morwell basketball competition and the Keysborough-based businessman stepped in. In their latest of a string of titles since, Mr Kerr’s Red Roo Sports under-18s took out a hotly contested South Sudanese Australian National Classic basketball tournament in Werribee against 50 rivals on 8 July. The team included captain Jo Jo Deng, cocaptains Michael and Kueth Jok, the tournament’s MVP Golong Golong and the finals MVP Pooch Pooch. The same squad’s under-20s placed third. “These men have overcome so much adversity to understand what it means to become a champion,” Mr Kerr said. Mr Kerr and his Red Roo Sports company have fed and coached up to 18 players without outside funding each Sunday afternoon at Hallam’s 24-7 Hoops. The keen young men – from across Melbourne’s east and south-east – travel hours by sparse and multiple public transport modes to get a run. They are trained under Mr Kerr’s slogan “Excellence over time with discipline equals success”. He tells them what they have to do to be better people. “If you’re in my program, you’re going to have to behave. I don’t have time for your attitude. “If you choose the dark side, then go. I’m about going to the light.” Mr Kerr gained the group’s hard-won trust because of his sincerity and doing “the hard yards” with them for the past two years. From the start, he drove and picked up players on the way to play in Gippsland each week, and met their families. Hailing from Jackson, Mississippi, Mr Kerr grew up in a population that was 80 per cent African-American. He understands what the maturing boys are going through. He sees their “extremely raw talent”. The boys, many of them 16, first took on adults and won the men’s B grade competition in Morwell. They took out A and B grade championships at Federation University in Churchill, they won

Scald attacker faces jail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A Doveton disability pensioner who pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his de facto partner and deliberately scalding her with boiling coffee has been told by a magistrate he faces jail. Gordon Austin, 50, and heavily addicted to cannabis, was also accused of punching his partner for 23 years, in the face on two separate occasions, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 11 July. Last year, he allegedly struck her to the face with his walking stick during an argument. He then forced her to lie down with his stick, put a pillow over her head and rammed his knee into her head. On 12 June, Austin told her he was kicking her out and threw her clothes out in the hallway. He
microwaved a cup of coffee to a hot temperature and screamed that he’d hurl it on her face. Austin then threw it on her leg, burning and blistering her through her pants. On 7 July, Austin accused the victim of seeing another man. He grabbed her by the hair, threw her against a wall, and spat in her face. “You haven’t seen anything yet. I’ll kill you,” he told her. The partner’s sister picked her up that day as Austin screamed at her. She told her sister she was too anxious to sleep and was afraid that Austin would kill her. Austin was arrested on 10 July, the same day that the sister reported him to Dandenong police. He was found with 45 grams of cannabis in zip-lock bags. He showed no remorse, and was aggressive towards police, the court was told. Austin had previously been charged with vio-
lence against his partner in 2010. He had been on a community corrections order during some of his recent offences. Austin’s lawyer said the accused believed the charges, particularly the hot coffee incident, were “trumped up” by the partner. Mr Vandersteen, noting a picture of the victim’s blistered leg, said it was just a matter of “how long” Austin would spend in jail. “Imagine if you committed one of these acts on a person in the street? “The risk to the victim is high because of the multiple assaults on her.” Mr Vandersteen handed down a four-year full intervention order protecting the partner from Austin. The accused will be sentenced on 5 September, pending a psychiatric report.
Teen is speaking out to challenge lingering racism By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Pool plan leak makes waves Dandenong’s Oasis pool could make a $50 million move to Dandenong Market, under a confidential council plan. Councillor Maria Sampey let the cat out of the bag at the Monday 11 July Greater Dandenong Council meeting. Her colleagues exchanged gobsmacked expressions as she questioned where an extra 300 parking spaces would come from to accommodate the relocation. Cr John Kelly leapt to his feet and called a point of order, blurting out with urgency that the matter was discussed at a councillor briefing session as a confidential item. Cr Sampey was stopped mid-sentence and took her seat as corporate services director Mick Jaensch responded to the point of order, confirming that the matter was indeed confidential and in the “very early planning stages”. She remained seated and silent, with a bemused expression on her face, and the councillor question time segment moved on to Cr Peter Brown. He offered Cr Sampey a bag to put the proverbial cat into. Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie said the council was following a scheduled review of its Dandenong Market precinct masterplan, “part of which is to consider a wide range of opportunities and scenarios for such a key site”. “In parallel with this process, the council is considering the long-term future of the Dandenong Oasis,” he said. “One option is whether a facility of this type could sit in the activity centre.” Mr Bennie said the council would engage with the community once it had developed its initial thinking around a masterplan and options for the pool’s future.

Asanga Seneviratne speaks up against the scourge of casual racism. 156750 Formed by the Centre for Multicultural Youth, the agency aims to give a voice to young people and combat negative racial profiling in mainstream media. Speakers can be booked for schools, businesses, local councils and media events. “The idea behind it is young multicultural people have important stories to share to the wider community,” Mr Seneviratne said.
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
In recent coverage of the Apex Gang and associated copy-cat burglaries and carjackings, there was a lack of young voices in the media discussion. “Journalism is quite an important thing in the country to keep the government to account. “Particularly in Apex, the majority of it is young people but we don’t get many young persons’ perspectives in the media.” 1202687-PB45-15
Racism is often hidden and casual but still happens every day, says Shout Out speaker Asanga Seneviratne. The Endeavour Hills 17-year-old commerce student says he wants to counter “covert racism” even if it is less than when his Sri Lankan parents first moved to Australia in the 1990s. His story is perhaps less dramatic and moving than other Shout Out speakers who have escaped persecution as refugees or asylum seekers, endured horrific violence and at times have faced unfair questions about their legitimacy. But as one of Casey’s many second-generation migrants, there’s still racism and other challenges that need to be faced, he said. Mr Seveviratne recounts an incident where a student of South East Asian background had scooped the medals at his school’s athletic carnival. Behind that champion’s back, other students made comments like “he must have run so fast because he’s black or because “he’s stolen something”. “You pass it off as banter, you don’t take it too seriously but looking back on it, there are repercussions. “If (the person making the comments) is holding these baseless stereotypes, he’s going to start influencing the community. “I think these perspectives can be changed by telling our stories.” In school yards, students grow up and befriend a diversity of cultures but research shows young people are still marginalised due to race, Mr Seneviratne said. Often young people hide their cultural identity to gain acceptance. They may feel a “shame” being the only one eating their culture’s food at school lunch, for instance. Those with exotic names still suffer unspoken discrimination when applying for jobs. Mr Seneviratne passionately believes multiculturalism has made a stronger, vibrant community. “Young people sometimes want to shun their culture but it’s what is so special about Australia. “When you embrace both cultures it’s really beneficial to the community.” Mr Seneviratne is one of a dozen young people who are part of the Shout Out public speaking agency.

Thieves held a large, curved knife to a 17-yearold’s throat during a robbery at Springvale McDonald’s. Police said two men arrived at the fast food restaurant at Osborne Avenue and Westall Road in a grey SUV about 9.25pm on Sunday 10 July. One walked inside carrying the knife and the other was armed with a garden saw. The thin and tall duo wore gloves, hoodies and face coverings, Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said. He said there were up to 20 patrons inside at the time. They confronted the staff behind the counter, placing a knife against the 17-year-old boy’s throat and stealing money from the register. Det Sgt Kirton said they then turned their attention to the 26-year-old store manager and demanded she open the safe. They ran back to the car with their takings and fled the scene. The vehicle was found burnt-out at Spring Valley Reserve in Clarke Road, Springvale South, just after 11pm that night.

Looking Back 100 years ago 20 July 1916 The War The women of Australia have already done, and are doing, much splendid work in the war of raising war funds for various kinds and of supplying valuable equipment to our boys bound for the front. Now an even greater and harder task faces them – to assist in stimulating enlistment. Yet that is what every woman of Victoria who realises her true duty to State and Empire must do today, and do quickly and unflinchingly. While there are many who have given their husbands and sons to the great cause, there are many who are either indifferent or who shrink from making the great sacrifice. Yet in this stupendous life or death struggle of the nation, women have even more to lose than men.
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society Would they keep their sons at home under pretence that it will be time enough to fight the German hordes when they reach Australia? Then it will be too late. Great Britain will have perished as a nation.
50 years ago 21 July 1966 A quiet night – or was it? Ian Garrett was assigned last Friday night to take a firsthand look at the Lyndale “mod” dance about which there has been considerable controversy. It was not a night to be out – unless it was imperative. I regretted the reluctant kind of dedication which had urged me to have a look at the Lyndale “mod” dance. Even with my heater of the car full on and the blower operating, the windows still fogged up.
At the dance, cars were parked in hundreds. Noise? Not much where I was parked opposite the entrance on the other side of Menzies’s Avenue. Inside it was different. The bands really beat out the beat, amplified until any tune there may be vanished and all that was left was the beat. When I left some time after 11pm the mist was thick and conditions were icier than ever. From there to Scoresby and beyond the mist had become dense fog and I was grateful for the white lines on the road. And still the cars ripped past at speeds of up to 50MPH. My “quiet night” was coming to an end.
20 years ago 22 July 1996 Snapshot of Melbourne’s second city Greater Dandenong Council was formed in
December 1994 following a merger between the City of Dandenong, 70 per cent of City of Springvale and small parts of the cities of Cranbourne and Berwick. The City of Greater Dandenong has been named Melbourne’s “second city” and the gateway to Gippsland.
5 years ago 18 July 2011 Councillors see the light Greater Dandenong councillors have supported the installation of traffic lights in Herbert Street, Dandenong, although it is “unlikely” the education department will provide funding. At last week’s meeting, the councillors rejected the council staff recommendation and voted against using automatic bollards which would have closed the street from 8am to 4pm on school days.
Sargent draws attention to sweets By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KATE Sargent isn’t that proud of the cake that snowballed her into a home-cooked sweets enterprise. It was a top-deck cake – a vanilla and chocolate sponge with purple icing and flowers – cooked for her daughter’s first birthday. But the offering went down well and stirred Ms Sargent’s dormant passion for baking birthday cakes, cupcakes, cake balls and wedding cakes in her Cranbourne home kitchen. Ms Sargent said she always loved helping in the kitchen as a child, with particular fond memories of the classic Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake cookbook. “Children’s birthday cakes – that’s where my real passion is, especially for first birthdays and baby showers. “It’s my happy place. It’s just lovely to see the excitement on kids’ faces.”
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL She said she now appreciates the real labour of love that her mother endured to re-create the Women’s Weekly cakes recipes. Requests came from time-poor friends for a variety of fun-themed birthday cakes. Ms Sargent has created designs including Finding Nemo, Paw Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman. “Most of us don’t have as much time as we used to. They don’t have the time to organise a party and make the birthday cake as well.” Along the way she has perfected the art of edible, icing figurines and flowers.
Kate Sargent with her home-baked treats 156471 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS She honed her technique at cooking classes and by astutely Googling cake-making videos on YouTube and pictures on Pinterest. Two years ago, her commandingly named home business Sargent Sweetness was officially born.
The business name was a “cute play on words” using her married name. It means that if she divorces, she loses her business, Ms Sargent jokes. She adds that not only is she grateful for the name but also for her husband’s support for the enterprise. The business has gathered steam in the past six months through Facebook and dropping off business cards around the region. Ms Sargent is also gaining a profile with her chocolate-coated cake balls – sometimes with a shot of salted caramel – at the monthly night market at Lynbrook Community Centre, and the recent decadent dessert-fest Winter Treats in Berwick. The next Lynbrook market, with children’s activities, teppanyaki and door prizes, is on 22 July, 5.30-9pm. Her chocolate-coated cake balls – with a flavour shot of salted caramel – went down a treat at the Winter Treats event in Berwick recently.

Raider sobs to mum over raids By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A Narre Warren man has been remanded on eight charges of holding up shop staff at knifepoint in Melbourne’s south-east in June. Sean Peter O’Toole, 26, appeared briefly via video link in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July, and did not apply for bail. He had been remanded in custody since being arrested two weekends earlier. “I love you, Mum,” he sobbed to relatives in the court gallery. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted O’Toole had been on bail during several of the offences, as well as a community corrections order. O’Toole was accused of an armed robbery of a Narre Warren servo on 7 June, stealing $170 cash and a packet of Winfield cigarettes. He was also charged over an armed robbery of $300 from a Clayton tobacconist on 24 June, $100 from a Pakenham servo as well as $60 from a person on 27 June. The other alleged armed robberies involved $300 from a Springvale grocery store on 27 June, $150 from a person in Springvale on 28 June, $650 from a Springvale clothes shop on 29 June, and $200 from a Hawthorn tobacconist on 30 June. O’Toole was charged with attempted armed robberies at Springvale on 27 June and Hawthorn on 30 June.
He was also charged with a Noble Park burglary on 7 April, allegedly stealing cash, jewellery and bank cards valued at $1020. The accused allegedly used a bank card not belonging to him to dishonestly buy $59 of items at Coles in Noble Park that day. He also allegedly stole $2800 of jewellery and a digital camera in a Narre Warren burglary in April, and destroyed a window in Hampton Park in May. O’Toole was also charged with speeding at 113 km/h in an 80 km/h zone as well as two counts of driving unlicensed and a single count of driving an unregistered vehicle. He was set to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing over the alleged armed robberies on 12 July. He will appear on the other charges, including possession of methamphetamine and breaching a corrections order, at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 August.

Three lines of red oaks will soon bring a blaze of colour to Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills. Planting of the bright red-leaved deciduous trees on the median strip and both sides of the road opposite Endeavour Hills shopping centre was expected to begin on 12 July as part of a $500,000 Casey Council project. Casey councillor Rafal Kaplon, who initiated the Heatherton Road Boulevard idea, said the trees would be individually dedicated to outstanding servants of the community, CFA and police. “Once the trees are established and reach full maturity, they will create an amazing free canopy along Heatherton Road,” Cr Kaplon said. He said the project would help brighten the area after the spate of terrorism-related incidents. “This project is a necessity to ... restore a sense of community spirit that has been affected by the sad events that had occurred in the area over the last two years,” he said. The project includes installing flagpoles at the corner of Heatherton Road and Mossgiel Park Drive.

If the pen is mightier than the sword, how potent is a PowerPoint presentation? Canis Nugroho, a student at Gleneagles Secondary College, created a 10-minute animated experience of the Vietnam War, its horrific battles and the heated domestic politics, to win one of 10 places on a Victorian student tour of Vietnam in September. Canis said the project – which presented the war through the eyes of a soldier and veteran – was an “extreme eye-opener”. “It made me realise how the Vietnam War and the Battle of Long Tan ... seemingly so small compared to other wars Australia had been in, played a significant role in shaping and changing the nation. “The war is the main reason for today’s Vietnamese Australian population (and) the reason why Australia abolished the ‘White Australia’ rule.” The Narre Warren student said she felt Australians needed to know more about the war and its controversies. “When Australia entered this war, everyone was excited. But once media publicised napalm, Agent Orange and killing, Australia’s perceptions were completely changed. “Australian soldiers were seen as evil killers rather than heroes. They were told to forget about the war, and this is what saddens me.” The Vietnam Veteran Association of Australia competition that marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan attracted more than 600 entries. The study tour includes significant sites such as the Cu Chi Tunnels, Long Tan and War Remnants Museum. The Battle of Long Tan, commemorated on 18 August, featured a remarkable resistance by 108 men in D Company 6RAR against up to 2500 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong attacking troops in the Vietnam War. Canis will attend a commemoration at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne on the day. As for the Vietnam tour, she looks forward to treading the battle sites she’s now heard so much about.

9 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 18 July, 2016
Families saved from ice storm By GEORGIA WESTGARTH Glenn Munso, a former drug dealer and addict, is using his past life to save families cracking under the “ice epidemic”. That’s what he calls it – an “epidemic” – so farreaching that kids, users, and addicts are driving across Melbourne to attend his Hallam gym in the hope of beating drugs. Glenn, a 29-year-old personal trainer and creator of the Youth YOU Program, said people drove from Essendon and Melton to attend his sessions in drug rehabilitation. But it was the helplessness he felt from parents and loved ones of addicts, that pushed him to take action outside of the individuals’ own battles. “Parents literally put their entire lives on hold when they have a child on drugs - it’s just a vicious cycle,” Glenn explained. “But I can give parents insight into what it’s like to be that kid on drugs and I find they appreciate that.” With a background firmly planted in the illegal drug scene, Glenn says he can insightfully educate parents in ways no other youth or support worker can, and has created an online portal to help more families than he ever could have hoped to meet in his gym. “It’s an online support program for anyone dealing with a loved one on drugs,” Glenn said. Glenn said many parents were desperate to reconnect with their drug-affected child. “They ask me how they can reconnect with their child. They ask me how they can speak to their child on drugs. They tell me they feel like they have lost their child. “Most parents’ whole world stops when they have a child addicted to drugs. “They don’t know how they should be living their own life - and it’s really damaging, they won’t go to parties or events, or go on holidays. They lose friends, they get depressed and anxious and it isolates them. “They can’t talk to other parents because they feel like they’re going to judge them on their parenting skills – this way they can learn and talk to me online and no-one needs to know about it.” Glenn’s program has been running since 2014
Jarryd working out with his new mentor, Glenn Munso, at Essential Health and Fitness in Hallam. 156507 and has helped addicts as young as 13 years old, to 28. The user-pays online support group costs $17 per week and includes weekly videos, lessons and live question and answer sessions from Glenn. But Glenn said one of the most important as-

pects of the support group was exactly that, support from other parents living the same battles. “The live question and answers work well for the parents who don’t attend live forums and suffer with judgement, it’s a private way of asking questions,” Glenn said.
The tutorials with Glenn touch on how to react to your child and communicate with them without giving off an anxious energy which can result in the child rebelling. To join, visit: http://youthyouprogram.com/ join-new/
Ex-addict owes a debt of gratitude to rehabilitation gym... and his mum By GEORGIA WESTGARTH When Jarryd Bardsley looked back on his eightyear drug addiction, he admitted sitting alone on his bedroom floor smoking ice as one of his lowest points. The 26-year-old concreter from Cranbourne smoked a gram a day at the height of his addiction. “Ice gives you a buzz like nothing else out there,” he said. “You’re on a heightened alertness when you’re on it. I felt like I was someone different when I smoked ice - I didn’t speak to anyone, not even my mum. I just wasn’t me. “It’s a worse you for sure when you’re on ice, you lose all judgement of what’s wrong and right and you don’t think things are as bad as what they are.” Jarryd has been clean for close to four months and attributes his new found attitude to Glenn Munso’s Youth YOU drug rehabilitation program.
A former drug dealer and addict himself, Glenn “gets it”, Jarryd said. While in the grip of ice, Jarryd’s weight dropped to 70 kilograms. “You can go days without eating. You just don’t have an appetite when you’re on ice.” Jarryd started playing around with illegal drugs at 18 years of age, after he left high school in Frankston at 17 years old. “I started doing drugs with friends from the peninsula,” he said, and ended up doing ice alone on his bedroom floor for two years. Eight years later, Jarryd said hypnotherapy, counselling and Narcotics Anonymous didn’t stop the paralysing urge for another hit. “When it comes to relapsing it could be something as simple as being in my room and getting that craving to do it because that’s where I used to smoke,” Jarryd said. Jarryd relapsed every time he tried to quit ice, despite owing dealers money – and the dealers added up.
Jarryd owed cash to about 15 dealers over his eight year drug habit. “My bank balance went into negative, I never used credit cards, I was just in debt with drug dealers, but it’s a worry when they aren’t your mates. He also lost a number of jobs. “You become unreliable, because you don’t sleep for so long you struggle to get up every morning and get to work.” His mum Karen kicked him out of home before she found Glenn’s program. “I was six days clean when mum walked me in here (Glenn’s gym) for the first time,” Jarryd said. Now Jarryd visits Essential Health and Fitness six days a week. “Subconsciously I really didn’t want mum to find out about my drug habit, but looking back I’m glad she did, she’s helped me so much,” Jarryd said.

It was a double case of doing a double-take when a man locked in police cells was brought into the wrong Dandenong Magistrates’ courtroom not once but twice on 11 July. The man seemed to have been quite the social butterfly in custody. As he was erroneously led out into the dock, he recognised the accused already standing before the judge, called out to him by name and wished him luck in his case. The judge scolded the accused for starting to make a name for himself in the criminal world. “How many people have people come out of the cells and say ‘G’day! Good luck!’” the magistrate said. “It’s all about who you know.”

Councillor Maria Sampey urged Greater Dandenong council staff to follow Judge Judy’s lead during the Monday 11 July meeting. Her calls for a division – a record in the minutes of how each councillor voted on a motion - initially went unheeded, possibly because her microphone was not switched on. When the request finally broke through, a frustrated Cr Sampey complained she’d made the call three times. “Replay the tape – Judge Judy would,” she said.

Councillor Jim Memeti wants Greater Dandenong Council to get a gimmicky phone number. He spotted a number on a nearby real estate agency office that ended in Dandenong’s postcode – 3175 – and asked officers to find out if the council could find a similar number, saying it would stick in people’s minds. Cr Memeti raised several issues he’d encountered on a drive through Dandenong, including gridlock which meant his one kilometre drive home took 15 minutes. “Why don’t you walk?” several of his colleagues laughed.

“In Dandenong, there are more than 150 ways to say welcome,” started a positive ar-
ticle on the suburb by Hannie Rayson in the Saturday Age on 9 July. The 59-year-old had never been to Dandenong and was moved during her time at the market and Drum Theatre. “So what does multiculturalism mean to me? Sheer inspiration,” she concluded. Self-defence was no excuse for a woman convicted for arming herself with pepper spray. At a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing, a judge said there might be many defensive reasons for a woman to carry the spray but it was not a permitted weapon. The woman, who works for a medical supplies company, was fined $350. The perils of sharing your car, eh! A 49-year-old parent faced court with a string of unpaid traffic infringements including red lights and serious speeding offences - all adding up to $8900. The accused took full responsibility for the offences but mentioned he shared the car with his 29-year-old son. Pokemon Go hasn’t caused a recorded accident on Greater Dandenong’s roads - yet. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts said: “I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. “Anything that distracts people in and around vehicles - whether you’re driving or a pedestrian - has to be dangerous,” he said. “It’s fine to go catching Pokemon but if you end up in a hospital bed you won’t be catching many.” It was heart-warming to receive Journal reader Anne-Marie Collis’ kind words about the late Jack Johnson on our Facebook page. “His column Jack Looks Back is my favourite part of the paper, as was Marg Stork’s in the past,” she said. “Thank you for bringing this wonderful piece of Dandy history to life.”

Exhibition is clothed in culture By CASEY NEILL
Anzara Clarke in her studio in Olinda with dresses that will form part of her Cultural Threads exhibition. “A lot of my ideas are about culture and identity and human experience. “I work a lot in paper.” She found out about Cultural Threads through the application process and jumped at the chance for community engagement. “I do love the community-based art projects as well as my own work,” she said. “They create a space for people to really stretch and explore themselves.” She said working in a studio could be quite a solitary experience.
Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS
“It’s nice to balance that out with some of that community engagement.” The month-long Cultural Threads will build on its 2014 incarnation and celebrate textile art and cultural diversity. The City of Greater Dandenong-hosted event will feature knitting, crocheting, dyeing, weaving, needlepoint, yarn art and other skills. People of all ages and backgrounds will be guided by some of Australia’s most celebrated artists to forge connections, trade skills, share stories and interweave cultures.
There’ll be activities at multiple venues including the Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens, the Drum Theatre, the Dandenong and Springvale libraries and Harmony Square. Intricate and colourful installations will adorn the municipality throughout Cultural Threads, which is a satellite event of Craft Victoria’s Craft Cubed Festival. Anzara will be the artist in residence at Heritage Hill Museum and Historical Gardens, 66 McCrae Street, Dandenong, from August to October.

Their works range from accessories to fullsized garments and reflect ideas about culture. “It might be their own personal culture, in terms of their history and tradition, or it might be music culture, it might be youth culture,” Anzara said. “We didn’t put a limit on how they define culture, but that’s what the garments were to depict. “They were also able to see other people’s ideas of culture. It extends their thinking in quite an organic way.” The creations will be on display in the Harmony Square exhibition boxes, outside Dandenong Library, throughout August as part of the Greater Dandenong Council Cultural Threads project. “It was quite interesting to watch them through the process,” she said. “Each of them has taken a different approach to the way they’ve used the paper. “They gravitated towards something that spoke to them. “Some used sewing machines for the first time. “It was a really nice space for them to really engage in different ways and do something different to their daily life. “I think they’re all pretty excited. “They have to go home and think of artist statement to go with their work.” She said they also picked up problem-solving skills. “The solution is not always an obvious one. Sometimes you need to experiment and think a bit differently,” she said. “I think art is fantastic for that.” Anzara was living in Tasmania and planning a move to Victoria when she applied for the artist in residency project held at Dandenong’s Heritage Hill. “I use the garment form pretty much exclusively,” she said.

WE all come to a time in our lives when we need to evaluate our living arrangements. Willow Lodge offers owner-occupier accommodation on a permanent basis, situated in a lifestyle resort. There are two, and two and a half bedroom homes for sale at affordable prices on the 45 acre site. When Willow Lodge says lifestyle resort, you can understand why. For the more active, there is a tennis court, a sports club and an undercover bowling green, indoor bowls and a swimming pool, dances and live shows, and a gym. For those who enjoy more laid back activities, there is the library, bingo, craft room, workshop and social darts. Willow Lodge also has a medical centre which is open 5 days per week with 3 experienced doctors. On-site pathology and podiatry services are also available. To look your best, there is a on-site hairdresser and we also have a café which is open for meals. There is a bus service every 15 minutes at the front of the village, making shopping and day trips a breeze. The on-site caretakers offer a safe and friendly environment for home owners. Willow Lodge is located on Frankston- Dandenong Road, Bangholme. Call them on 9706 5011 to arrange an inspection of the complex and the homes for sale.

Cooing pigeons wooing council By CASEY NEILL Doveton’s pigeon club needs a hand to keep its birds dry. The Dandenong Racing Pigeon Club (DRPC) hosted Casey Councillor Wayne Smith at its Power Reserve headquarters on Friday 24 June. DRPC stalwart Joe Phillips recently donated a truck and bird baskets worth about $300,000, to give back to the sport that’s given him enjoyment for 52 years. During the visit, secretary Chris McDonald asked Cr Smith to consider allocating council funding for a base outside the shed to accommodate the truck and shelter overhead to protect the pigeons from rain. The club has 32 members and was established about 1969. Mr McDonald lives in Hallam and has been with the club since 1986. “It’s a real sport. It’s something a lot of men do when they get a bit older and they can’t play footy and cricket,” he said. DRPC president Keith Flentjar, from Endeavour Hills, joined in 2000 after holding a life-long interest in birds and trying his hand at greyhound racing. “When you retire you’ve got to have something to make you get out of bed,” he said. Flyers breed and tend their pigeons at home, and bring them to the club for transportation to the race starting point. “We had 1200 in here last week,” Mr Flentjar said. Each bird has a rubber ring or electronic chip on their leg that time-stamps their return home. “It’s the quickest velocity from when they’re released to when they get home that wins,” he said. “It gets down to split seconds. “Generally in the first batch of pigeons there’s four or five. Those five pigeons will be within a metre of each other depending on where they live.“ The club holds races every Saturday from June to November, some starting as far afield as the New South Wales-Queensland border. “At the moment, we’re racing in Wycheproof,
Keith Fletjar and Chrystal the pigeon. 156447 260kms,” Mr Flentjar said. “Our next race point’s Ouyen, then we go to Mildura, Coombah, Fowler’s Gap – that’s 500 miles – and Tibooburra is usually our 600. “I finished third in a Tibooburra race ... in 10 hours and 15 minutes. “That’s nearly 900 kilometres. “There have been some other quicker races.
New hospital opening in 2017
There was a Cobar race that was four hours. That’s 400 miles, doing 100mph. “The wind is the dominant factor. They fly 70km/h with no wind.” Don’t the birds get tired? “Not the good ones,” Mr Flentjar said. No one knows exactly how they know the way home.
“They’ve done all the experiments, and it’s got something to do with the earth’s magnetism,” he said. “The races that affect them is if we have bad electrical storms. That affects their radar. “You’ve sort of got to break them in. “When they’ve first hatched, you let them out around the loft and they get themselves home through instinct. After that they’re home for life.”

Expansive new medical facility With the new St John of God Berwick Hospital well underway at Kangan Drive, many are asking how it will affect and benefit them. All of the current services provided at the Gibb Street Hospital, including operating theatres and the maternity, surgical and medical wards, will be relocated to the new hospital once opened in late 2017. Beds in the units will increase to allow care for a growing number of patients. In addition, new services will be launched, including an intensive care unit, cardiac unit and a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory. Additional operating theatres will be opened, bringing the total to eight and an increase to six maternity birthing suites. Basement car parking will allow for 350 cars and at the completion of stage 2, the hospital will cater for 210 patient beds. Employment opportunities for 200 new roles will become available in early 2017 in preparation
for opening later in the year. A total of 100 new doctors will also be required. “The construction of the new hospital, which is co-located with Monash Health’s Casey hospital, will form part of a major health precinct in Melbourne and take health care in the region to a new level,” St John of God Berwick Hospital CEO Lisa Norman said. “The hospital is expected to be completed in late 2017, at which time all existing services provided by SJGBH at our historic Gibb Street site will be relocated to the new hospital.” “The number and range of services will be significantly expanded, and it is anticipated that the hospital will play a vital role in providing health care services in Eastern Victoria.” For further information on the St John of God Berwick Hospital redevelopment, visit www.sjog. org.au/berwickredevelopment or find St John of God Berwick Hospital on Facebook or Instagram. 33 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 18 July, 2016
Appeal fails those most in need By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS As robotics teacher Nick Pryor puts it, Berwick Lodge Primary School’s world-beating kids could be anything. Fresh from taking out an international First Lego League robotics title in Sydney on 6 July, the eight-child team Trashformers were welcomed like heroes as they returned with their Lego-brick trophy. Berwick Lodge current students Samudra and Kyra, with former students and Casey teens Kav, Zoe, Eric, Lincoln, Leo and Kyle, were up against 39 teams from 21 countries in the robot performance section at the Asia-Pacific championships. Contenders came as far afield as Brazil, USA, Canada, Turkey, Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Some teams were older, and some had mighty support from major engineering corporations or universities. All were invited to the championships for being the best in their countries. “These guys in our team are the cream of the crop,” Mr Pryor said. “Sometimes they just leave me behind. “This is a big deal. I wasn’t sure of coming first place, but I was hoping for top 10.” Berwick Lodge principal Henry Grossek said the meet wasn’t all about friendly competition. There was a fun spirit of cultural and scientific exchange, including a light-hearted opening ceremony at Sydney Opera House, conga dancing, singing and sharing food. “Robotics is the essence of great learning experiences - looking at a scientific problem, getting a sense of teamwork and respect for each other.” The Trashformers with their swift-moving Lego robots Optimus Grime and Megaton and volunteers and teachers were up for a waste-sorting challenge that was extraordinarily challenging,“ Mr Grossek said. Keeping in tune with the waste-management theme - and the tune of Transformers - the team’s slogan was ‘Trashformers: plastics in demise’. Each team’s robots had to complete six missions on a 3.75 square-metre board in just twoand-a-half minutes.
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Kyra and Samudra with some of the components of the Trashformers. 156489 The robots demolished a block building, and picked up, sorted and transported objects, all while whirring up and down the board with surprising agility. At the same time, the students were like a pitcrew - efficiently changing the attachments of the robots for each mission. The robots operate on mix of student-designed coding, and light and visual sensors. No remotecontrols were allowed.
During the competition’s second run, its robot dropped its plastic bag. This aberration was corrected in the hotel room before the perfect third attempt. The Trashformers had gained a vital edge by designing two clever components - a conveyor belt and an elevator - that saved more than 20 seconds. The week was further vindication for Berwick Lodge’s trail-blazing Prep-6 robotics program
that began six years ago. “The kids are all digital natives these days,” Mr Pryor said. “They take to it like ducks to water. “It’s easy to teach because the kids love it so much.” The Trashformers were assisted by technical coach Dan Sriratatana, former Berwick Lodge teacher Traceye Rapinett and staff Alvina Seow, Mr Pryor and Mr Grossek.
Pokemon may be making the world fitter but police warn of its dangers By GEORGIA WESTGARTH POKEMON Go has taken over the world - and Casey is no exception. The phone app dubbed a type of ‘augmented reality’ is a trailblazer in the smart phone gaming sphere, and has added $7.5 billion to Nintendo’s market value since it hit the Appstore on 6 July. By 12 July the game had become the most active mobile game in the United States when it reached 21 million active users. And the Pokemon phenomenon has captured the attention of the region's police. A Berwick homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous in fear more gamers will swarm to their street if their name and address is revealed, has said suspicious driving in their neighbour-
hood wasn’t so suspicious after all. “Police were called to a house in Berwick following reports of a car seen acting suspiciously,” they said. The number plate was taken down, and this led to a young female driver being quizzed. “When questioned, she disclosed that she had been driving her sisters around town looking for Pokemons. “They’d been hovering in an area trying to capture their prey- police accepted their story.” Acting Sergeant Frank Ellesley from the Casey Highway Patrol said he wasn’t familiar with this case but such driving could be considered careless. “We look at each individual circumstance, but someone driving considerably slow under the
speed limit could be issued with a ticket for caress driving, but it is totally circumstantial." “If a driver is driving considerably under the speed limit it can be considered as a traffic hazard and careless driving, but I certainly haven’t heard of anything like that in regards to Pokemon. “I would think personally the game is more of a pedestrian issue of people using their phone while walking along a pedestrian crossing and unsupervised kids.” Pokemon’s popularity has struck an Emerald bus shelter, which is due to be demolished, with gamers using the shelter as a ‘Pokestop’ to catch the beloved Japanese creatures. An Emerald gamer said that “the effect of removing the shelter would be felt by Pokemon trainers everwhere”.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Boom set for compelling vision By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Casey is on the threshold of a potential economic boom, according to speakers at a Narre Warren Region Business Group AGM on 13 July. Guest speaker Neville Waterman spoke fervently of his goal for Waterman Business Centre to help 5000 Casey businesses thrive. Mr Waterman has plans to replicate his Narre Warren-based centre across Melbourne to provide a “healthy environment” to support small businesses. Businesspeople needed to have a “healthy vision” with a “compelling why” - beyond making money, he said. His was to support small businesses, many which floundered without an effective support network. Mr Waterman said a cluster of thriving businesses would profoundly boost wellbeing in the City of Casey. “I believe the real key to the success of our nation is the prosperity of small businesses. “We could profoundly affect the lives of so many people.” Mr Waterman said most business people started out unsure of how to build a healthy business, worked harder than they had to and had an unbalanced lifestyle. He hoped to facilitate business leaders that were well-connected, inspired, working smarter not harder and learning from other successful entrepreneurs. “What if we could create this environment that this small business person who is failing and struggling ... that they could have all the supports.”
Sam Aziz, Neville Waterman, Michael Spiteri and Narre Warren Region Business Group president Steve Osborne 156790 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS He invited business people to an open day at Waterman Business Centre at Victor Crescent on 29 July. Also at the meeting, Mayor Sam Aziz said Mr Waterman was an “amazing man” and that he and his business incubator were “critical” to Casey council’s economic strategy. He outlined the council’s plans for a Narre Warren CBD structure plan to help guide $10 billion of expected development in one of Victoria’s 10 legislated major activity centres. “Casey is at an amazing threshold. There’s great opportunities coming along,” he said. Cr Aziz said the council was in talks with the State Government to re-develop the suburb’s railway station, with high-density housing nearby.
He spoke of the need to create local employment with improved transport. He said it was unacceptable that 70 per cent of Casey residents travelled outside the municipality for work. The State Government’s $154 million promise to duplicate Thompsons Road would unlock a potential employment precinct and in turn create 100,000 jobs, Cr Aziz said. In the next five years, Casey could be home to defence-industry firms and the state’s biggest car mega-mart, he said. Cr Aziz defended the under-construction civic-arts precinct Bunjil Place, expected to drive 1 million visitors into Narre Warren each year. He said “years of prudent financial planning”
Growing magazine gives business some sparkle The latest edition of Grow magazine is out now online and in print. Grow is a collaboration between Star News Group and the Casey Cardinia Region to promote business activity in the two municipalities. Issue three with Bellevue Orchard’s Bernadette Russo on the cover, features a story on the Officer orchard’s new sparkling pink lady apple juice. Bellevue Orchard was one of three Casey Cardinia Region businesses nominated for this year’s Manufacturing Hall of Fame. The magazine also features stories on the two other local nominees, Hallam’s TRJ Engineering and Dorma Australia. Editor Garry Howe sat down with brothers Ray and Ron Weinzierl, who oversee one of the most impressive business and property portfolios in the Casey Cardinia Region, to talk about their growing business empire which includes Australian Precision Technologies in Berwick and Car Megamart in Pakenham. Robert Gordon and Bartlett Equipment are other highly successful family business featured in the July edition. Grow talked to founder Robert Gordon and his three children, Kate, Bobby and Sam, about the challenges of intergeneration change in a family business, while the Bartlett’s have recently notched up 70 years in business. First National Neilson Partners managing director Ross Neilson opens up to Grow about his typical working day and how he relaxes away from work. The magazine also has a special feature on event and conference venues in the south east and an update on the Casey Cardinia Business Hub. Visit growcaseycardinia.com.au to read these and other stories or to subscribe to an e-copy of Grow.

Scrooge boss tried to dodge Christmas payments Dandenong restaurant workers were among almost 250 who were underpaid their Christmas Day entitlements. The operator of a dozen restaurants across Melbourne will have to pay staff $21,700 following Fair Work Ombudsman intervention. The largest individual underpayment was $181. Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the restaurant operator mistakenly believed they
could declare Christmas Day a shut-down rather than pay permanent employees for a day off for a public holiday. She said Fair Work inspectors believed the employer made a genuine error and co-operated with the agency so avoided enforcement action. But Ms James said the case highlighted the importance of employers taking the necessary steps to ensure they understood the wage rates applicable to their employees, including penalty rates. “Our website can assist employers and work-
ers alike understand and comply with their rights and obligations so there aren’t any issues arising around public holidays,” she said. Ms James said most underpayments were inadvertent and the result of employers failing to check their minimum obligations under workplace laws. Visit www.fairwork.gov.au or call 13 13 94 for advice. A free interpreter service is available on 13 14 50.
meant the $125 million project could be funded without raising rates “by a cent”. With an expected 100-year shelf-life, Bunjil Place would be paid off within 16 years, Cr Aziz said. He took aim at the “group of six people” Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association for wanting to “cancel the contract and stop building”. At the dinner at Kilgerron Homestead restaurant, Beehive Foundation chairman Michael Spiteri received $1000 from the Narre Warren Region Group. Mr Spiteri said the donation would help save up to 100 children’s lives. The foundation was formed in 2012 to build resilience in young people. Around the same time there was a well-publicised youth suicide cluster in Casey. “Kids from normal families were struggling to cope with what life throws at them.” Mr Spiteri relayed the high rates of bullying, depression, self-harm and suicide among young people. Suicide was the largest cause of death in the 17-19 year old age group in Australia, he said. Beehive pitched itself as a way to help young people “maximise what they achieve in life” while teaching coping skills such as ‘facing fear’ and ‘digging deep’ in school, sport and life. Since then, the foundation has reached 10,000 children, helped in a ‘Spirit of Football’ round in South East Juniors football and in Casey schools. “We know we have saved lives,” Mr Spiteri said.
Apprentice in the running for state award A Cranboure apprentice is in the running to be named the state’s best. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert announced the finalists for this year’s Victorian Training Awards on Tuesday 12 July. Danielle Kazi-Shedden, 24, was among four shortlisted for the Victorian Apprentice of the Year title. The News reported in May that the Chisholm Dandenong student was doing things a little differently and picking up plenty of awards along the way. She’s since popped up on promotional billboards and bus shelter posters for the TAFE. Danielle didn’t achieve the Year 12 results she wanted and spent nine months unemployed before landing a job at Jayco in Dandenong South. Over the next three years, she tried her hand at different roles and discovered an interest in joinery and carpentry. “From there I was looking for an apprenticeship and found this shop-fitting role with Whytehall,” she said. Last year she won Chisholm’s Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year, and was then nominated for a Master Builders’ award. “I won the overall Joinery Apprentice of the Year, Metro Apprentice of the Year, and Victorian State Apprentice of the Year. That was last year, in April,” she said. “I was a little bit in shock at the time, it didn’t really sink in.” It all happened again this year. “I won the Chisholm Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year again and the overall Apprentice of the Year. I also won the CEO’s award,” Danielle said. The Victorian Training Awards will be presented on Friday 26 August. 35 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 18 July, 2016

Mega swim cash for MS By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SIX steadfast teams have raised more than $26,000 during a 24-hour multiple-sclerosis ‘mega swim’ at Casey RACE on 9 July. Leading the pack in the MS Mega Swim were three teams from Nuna Youth Squad, which collectively raised at least $22,000, for their herculean efforts. Nuna Youth had raised more than $91,000 in
five previous MS swimathons. Kate Nolan, of the Night Trawlers team, was the top individual who collected $1825 of pledged donations. The best dressed award went to Morgan Kellett-Jackson, who dressed as a mermaid. The funds raised in the national event will go to multiple-sclerosis research and support services.

Six months’ jail for PSO attack By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, Aboriginal Affairs Minister Natalie Hutchins, Boon Wurrung elder Arweet Carolyn Briggs, Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative Limited chief executive Andrew Gardiner, Cr Damien Rosario, Cr Wayne Smith and Cr Mick Morland at the place's opening. 156789
New lease on life gives new hope The recently-opened and renovated Casey Aboriginal Gathering Place has turned a former deteriorated building into a welcoming drop-in centre. The space at 20 Adonis Street, Doveton, holds outreach health programs, social activities, men’s, art-and-yarn and homework groups. At its formal opening on 13 July, councillor Wayne Smith said it was a place to “drop in for a yarn and a cuppa”. It was developed based on research that showed Aboriginal Victorians were “more likely to be involved in the justice system, less likely to finish school, attend university and have a sustainable job than non-Aboriginal Victorians. “As a group, their health status is poorer across all measures.” Cr Damien Rosario said the gathering place was an apt location, given Casey has the highest Aboriginal population in Melbourne, including many aged under 17. “Council completely refurbished an underutilised and deteriorated facility and opened the
doors to the community earlier this year. “The Gathering Place has since been welcomed and well-received, with the Aboriginal community already establishing a strong sense of belonging and pride with the space.” Mayor Sam Aziz said the gathering-place model had proved to create better health outcomes. “The Gathering Place is seen as an opportunity for creating new forms of community participation to sustain improved social, health and economic futures.” The space was renovated by Casey council and funded by the State Government. The opening was attended by Wurundjeri elder Diane Kerr, Boon Wurrung elder Arweet Carolyn Briggs and Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative Limited chief executive Andrew Gardiner. The State Government was represented by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Natalie Hutchins and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams.
A Cranbourne man who struck and verbally abused a Dandenong railway station PSO has been jailed for six months. Akol Deng Mabour, 22, sought a sentencing indication as he appeared on a prison video link in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 July. Mabour swore aggressively at two PSOs when asked to produce a concession card at the railway station on the night of 4 May, the court was told. “I have no respect for you, c***”, “You bitch, I’ll spit in your face” and “I’ll f*** you c***s up”, he said during his abusive tirade. Mabour was moved on from the station. He returned with eight youths, including his younger brother, from Pop Up Park on Foster Street. As Mabour approached, a PSO pushed him in the chest. Mabour then struck out with his right arm to the PSO’s face. Mabour persistently resisted as the PSOs threw him to the ground, handcuffed and arrested him. He told police soon after “they had it in for me”. “If you have a fight with me, I’m going to win.” Defence lawyer Nadine Daniel said Mabour
Letters Tell Disney to hop it! “A Hallam based amateur theatre group has felt Disney’s legal wrath and been forced to cancel a tribute to Disney.” This act smacks of the Disney label’s fake attitude of caring for children. I have sent my personal protest to the Melbourne branch of Disney as being puerile, unbecoming of a mighty giant which pretends to present programmes for the benefit of children.

I appeal to the Australian public to boycott all Disney productions and let us create our own “Skippy the Kangaroo”. Skippy has been on the screen for a long time and is ever so relevant to the Australian psyche. Australian children can easily relate to Skippy. Let us start our own little “hop along”. returned to the station a second time because he had no other way of getting home. “In the first instance, he was going home. His mistake was not having proof of concession. “In the first instance he was trying to avoid any trouble.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen retorted: “I don’t understand that at all. There’s nothing he did that supports what you said – nothing. Mr Vandersteen said it was “not unreasonable” for a PSO to ask for a concession card. He noted the PSOs gave Mabour multiple warnings for his foul language and tried to get him out of the area rather than “engage with him”. “What would you be thinking if you put yourself in the position of the PSOs ... when he goes out and comes back with a group of associates? “I’d be really nervous if eight people advanced on me.” Mabour was already serving an 18-month jail term, with a five-month non-parole period over an assault on a taxi driver. Mr Vandersteen noted Mabour’s multiple violent priors, including assault of a police officer. Mabour received a six month term – with two months served on top of his existing jail sentence.

SPORT Season marks free race days By ROY ASPINALL
Dandenong basketball icon Penny Taylor has been picked for her third Olympic Games. 130928

Taylor has got her eyes on the top of the podium By JARROD POTTER While there’s been a changing of the guard in the Opals’ line-up, the Australian women’s basketball team has called in Penny Taylor to shore up the side’s experience. Dandenong WNBL great Taylor, 35, originally from Belgrave South, will join the Opals for her third Olympic campaign after missing London 2012 with injury. She hasn’t pulled any punches about the side’s ambitions either - Taylor isn’t going over to Brazil without an eye on the top of the podium. “Gold is always the goal at an Olympic Games but we know there is a long way to getting the chance to play for that gold medal,” Taylor said on rio2016.olympics.com.au. “We have a strong team and a very similar team to what we had at the 2014 World Champi-
onships and I think (coach) Brendan (Joyce) has done a wonderful job implementing a system that we love being a part of. “We play Brazil first up and playing the home side in the first game is always going to be a huge challenge in itself.” Taylor will add to her Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 campaigns - after she was ruled out of London 2012 following a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). “London was always a motivator to make Rio but it was also motivation to get healthy and get back playing with the girls,” Taylor said. They’ll have to knock over the odds-on favourites in the USA as well as power-packed sides like France and Spain, but Taylor believes the side can go the distance even against the amazing Americans. “They are the defending gold medallists and are the pinnacle of our sport,” Taylor said.
“They’re always who we see as our biggest competitor and we just want to give ourselves another chance to get in a position to be able to face them.” Australia has been a dominant side on the world stage since 1996, with the Opals winning medals at the last five games – with three silvers in Sydney, Beijing and Athens as well as two bronzes in London and Atlanta. Former Dandenong Ranger Leilani Mitchell was also picked for the 12-woman side along with Dandenong junior Liz Cambage, Rachel Jarry, Laura Hodges, Erin Phillips, Marianna Tolo, Katie-Rae Ebzery, Natalie Burton, Tessa Lavey, Steph Talbot and Cayla George. In Boomers news, Endeavour Hills champion centre Andrew Bogut is set to race the clock to be fit for Rio after he sustained bone bruising in his leg in the NBA finals series.
As a new Victorian racing year commences on 1 August, the Melbourne Racing Club will continue to offer free admission for all Wednesday meetings at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown. That means that of the 35 meetings to be run at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown, in the 2016-2017 season, 30 of them will offer free admission. The first race meeting in a busy year at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown, will be staged on Sunday 7 August which will see the running of the 134th $200,000 Grand National Hurdle (3900 metres) and the $125,000 Crisp Steeplechase (3900 metres). The major feature date will be Sandown Spring Carnival Race Day on Saturday 12 November featuring the Sandown Guineas, Zipping Classic, Eclipse Stakes and Sandown Cup at the conclusion of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Sandown Guineas, for three-yearolds, has an impressive reputation for producing future star gallopers. The Zipping Classic was formerly the Sandown Classic which had originally been known as the Sandown Cup. The Melbourne Racing Club changed the name to recognise the incredible feat of Zipping to win his fourth successive Sandown Classic in November 2010. By doing so Zipping became only the fourth horse in Australian racing history to win the same Group race four or more years in succession. The previous horses to do it were Lord (Group 2 Memsie Stakes 1958-61), Manikato (Group 2 William Reid Stakes 197983) and Tie The Knot (Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes 1999-02). In 2010, the new Sandown Cup was introduced over 3200 metres and the race becomes a qualifying event for the following year’s Melbourne Cup and in time it is sure to become a major event on the calendar. The other feature days are highlighted by some of Australia’s premier jumping events. The Grand National Hurdle and Crisp Steeplechase open the season with the Australian Hurdle and Australian Steeplechase to be run on Saturday 27 May 2017 at Ladbrokes Park, Sandown. Next May will mark the 136th running of the two premier jumping events, which are two of the oldest events on the Victorian racing calendar. The day is also the only Saturday metropolitan jumps meeting on the Victorian calendar. Those two events are major lead-ups to the two biggest jumping events in Australia to be run in August. Other feature days are Christmas Eve and Easter Monday.
SEJ rewrites the rules as it grows its umpiring team Significant work has been put into developing the umpires in the South East Juniors. This work has paid off with the numbers in the South East Juniors Umpiring list growing from 186 to 305 since 2013. The South East Juniors Umpiring Team is led by Rod Hamilton, SEJ Umpiring Manager. He, together with his dedicated team, meets weekly to develop the umpires to ensure they have the skills and knowledge on how to umpire the games in the South East Juniors competition. This year, the South East Juniors Umpiring Team was fortunate to secure two new training venues which allows for more flexibility in the delivery of the training across more of the region. On Wednesday nights, training is done at Heatherbrae Reserve, Officer, and on Thursday nights at Carlisle Park, Cranbourne, which is a purpose built synthetic sports field. 42 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 18 July, 2016
Carlisle Park’s surface guarantees that training can be held without worrying about the condition of the ground degrading. SEJ Umpiring also provides umpires to schools for their football clinics and sports days, SSV Premier football for the Hallam Academy and SSV for year seven to year 12 for schools throughout the south eastern suburbs. Umpires are also supplied for SSV Primary School Championships. SEJ umpires also officiated in the Metro and Subway Championships. The SEJ Umpiring Team is also community minded. In 2015 it raised $5000 for Ronald McDonald House and sponsored a room at the house for the residents to stay. Twenty SEJ umpires also went in and cooked for the residents for the evening, which was a great way to instil community values into the 17
teenage umpires in attendance. The team also went down to the Christmas party and ran activities for the kids at the hospital. “The success of our growth is through word of mouth,” Hamilton said. “We have a good team environment and we try to get to know the parents and explain to them how their children are doing in their development. “We try to be flexible and schedule umpires in ways that supports their needs as 80 per cent of our umpires are under 25 years of age.” SEJ Umpiring has opened up umpiring pathway opportunities too as six out of the 25 girls in the Victorian Women’s Umpiring Academy come from the SEJ Umpiring Team. Those interested in joining the SEJ Umpiring team can contact Rod Hamilton via umpiring@ southeastjuniors.com.au.

Papavs perseverance makes SEABL 300-club By JARROD POTTER SEABL - ROUND 15 There was no fairytale victory for Clare Papavs in her 300th SEABL clash after Kilsyth stormed back into the clash not once, or twice, but thrice. Returning to the place where she found her feet in basketball, as a Kilsyth junior, Papavs received a warm welcome from the home team ... at least before and after the match. Aside from those pleasantries it was game on as Dandenong shot out with its three-point game dialled in early. After pushing the lead to 12 at the half - on the back of some dynamite long-range shooting off Rachel Antonadiou (13 points) and an amazing inside/outside effort from centre Lauren Scherf (15 points, 18 rebounds) - the Rangers look set to canter home and give Papavs something to celebrate. But that wasn’t on the cards for the Cobras as they endured the worst of the onslaught. Dandenong couldn’t finish the job after the main break, with a disastrous run of turnovers, misses and back-court errors opening an opportunity for Kilsyth to strike. But the Rangers fired back ... and fired back again to build the lead and try to hold it this time around. But no matter what it did, or how far the lead stretched, Dandenong couldn’t shut the door on Kilsyth’s fight-back. It would be a pair of well-known faces at Dandenong to scorch the Rangers; as WNBL captain Steph Cumming (16 points) willed her side back in the clash. Former Dandenong WNBL player Rosie Moult (14 points, 10 rebounds) had a monstrous last term though - stealing the show as she started raining threes, making steals and clasping some massive rebounds against Scherf, Jacinta Kennedy and Chloe Bibby. Papavs (seven points, four rebounds) didn’t sit a second in her milestone match, but even her herculean efforts manning the skilful Jasmine Gill (15 points) weren’t enough to drag the Rangers to victory. After reaching her SEABL triple-century - split between Kilsyth and Dandenong - in a glittering career with five SEABL championships, there was plenty to take in for the Dandenong dynamo. “Today I got a little bit emotional thinking about the journey I’ve been through and some of the stuff I’ve been through and overcome,” Papavs said. “Some of the mental battles when you’re not playing well and keeping yourself motivated and playing season in, season out playing SEABL and WNBL back-to-back, it can take its toll on you mentally. “The fact that the game was at Kilsyth - it couldn’t have been planned any more perfectly and I thank Kilsyth for giving me my start and Dandenong for allowing me to continue this career I’ve had and it’s not ending any time soon.” Looking ahead remains her focus ... as the
Clare Papavs celebrates with her biggest fans after her 300th SEABL match. 156671 tongue-in-cheek nature of Dandenong’s SEABL star shone through even in defeat. “I’m going to go out tonight (Saturday) and celebrate with the girls and just make the most of it,” Papavs said. “Maybe I’ll think about it all (the career) in another 200 games time.” She wanted to thank her family, friends as well as the Dandenong and Kilsyth basketball communities for their support. Dandenong’s men had a far better time though, stitching up the Cobras 82-75 in the second match of the evening. It came on the back of enormous games from Andrew Harms (28 points, 10 rebounds) and Daequon Montreal (20 points, nine rebounds).

Dandenong faces Bendigo at home on Saturday evening. In BIG V results, Keysborough’s men kept their slim season hopes alive with a 70-67 win over the high-flying Shepparton Gators, but not after they were shut down in the fourth term. The Cougars only managed seven points after the final change, but had enough in the tank to take the triumph on the back of efforts from Calvin Enge (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Ben Morwood (16 points). The women’s side lost 54-81 to Blackburn as Genevieve Abbott (21 points, 13 rebounds) starred with a double-double alongside Amy Leslie (17 points).
Noble blast past Norwood By JARROD POTTER EFL DIVISION 1 - ROUND 13 Riding the rollercoaster, Noble Park’s up and down season is soaring once again following a 15-point victory over Norwood. Missed opportunities highlighted the first term as Noble Park stole it back from the hosts time and time again ... but did nothing with it. The forwards and midfielders squandered the back-line’s dogged work to keep the likes of Leigh Williams (five goals) and Jordan Clarke (two goals) from getting too much of it. With mistakes mounting, coach Mick Fogarty gave the side both barrels at the quarter-time break - demanding they lift or risk letting its finals chances slipping away. The surge came on schedule from the first bounce of the second term as Noble Park started to fire. Piva Wright (one goal) seemingly ran through brick walls to give Fogarty something up forward and as a pinch-hitting ruck. His efforts, alongside the evergreen Craig Anderson and a fleet of other strong-willed midfielders, saw the intensity get raised yet again. Neither side gave an inch, leaving to a hotly contested match that threatened to boil over a few times with a few skirmishes part of a game that both sides were desperate to win. The Bulls had the Norsemen on a platter through the third - booting away as Tim Harper (four goals) stole the show up forward ... mostly. He was clean on the lead, sharp on a set-shot ... but Harper’s missed shot running unopposed into the goalsquare summed up the second half for the Bulls. They had the chances to blow the game apart, but failed to make the most of them and gave the hosts one last charge to revive its finals prospects. They booted four goals in rapid succession to start the fourth term as the visitors sprayed them from everywhere. It took the cool, calm Vergim Faik to take a mark on the goal-line, go back on a severe angle and slot the match-defining goal to drive home the 13.15 (93) to 12.6 (78) victory. “I haven’t been this fired up for a number of years and what it tells me personally is that I’ve still got a great passion for coaching and this footy club and was probably as animated as fired up as I’ve been for four years,” Fogarty said. “We understand that they’re going to come at us at a million miles an hour physically and I thought we stood up really well in the second part of the second quarter and started hitting the scoreboard. Faik had 27 hit outs as well in a superb effort for the Bulls alongside usual suspects Kyle Martin (29 possessions), Ben Giobbi and Sam Monaghan while Sean Corrigan and Tyson Mitchem featured in the best.
Dandenong Thunder struck its first NPL 2 defeat By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 21 There was nothing to smile about for the Greater Dandenong NPL 2 sides after a trio of defeats rocked Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles. The ladder leading Thunder was shocked most of all in its 1-2 home loss to mid-table Box Hill United. With experienced bookends Simon Colosimo and Veton Korcari on the sidelines, it forced Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic to draw on the depths of his bench-stock. Contuining their stellar seasons, Nick Modaffari and Faisal Sakhizada held up the back end in Colosimo’s absence, with decent support from Fitim Ibrahimi and Antonio Barbaro. It would be opened by the opposition approaching the half though as Ben Osei-Safo (35’) carved his way into the scoresheet. Thunder’s mercurial striker Brandon Barnes (39’) didn’t falter when he was sent to the penalty spot a few minutes later as he absolutely smashed 44 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 18 July, 2016
his 33rd goal of the season into the back of the net and left the scoreline 1-1. It would remain level for the best part of an hour as both sides had their chances. Box Hill’s Osei-Safo put another one into the back just after the resumption ... but was called off-side to the jeers and cheers of either team’s supporters. Barnes was creative up forward, bringing his wings into the game with a couple of deft passes from the top of the box, but when they didn’t work Barnes took it on himself to weave some magic. He was cruelly denied by a couple of amazing saves from Keegan Coulter as his left foot cannoned plenty at the Mustangs’ keeper. Needing a spark off the bench, Box Hill found it in Abel Freesha (87’) who broke the equal footing to also break Thunder hearts and end the unbeaten streak. Dandenong had a few more attempts in the dying stages, with a couple of contentious calls not touched by the referee, but there was nothing more the host side could do as the whistle sounded on its first defeat of 2016.
An early penalty to John Pykett (26’) pushed Springvale White Eagles ahead, but in the end the Eastern Lions roared back to life to boot two goals in five minutes across a blistering second half. Dandenong City’s NPL promotion hopes look dashed after a 0-1 heartbreaking loss at home, following a 90th minute penalty awarded to Brunswick City. It leaves City 13 points adrift of Kingston City heading into the last seven rounds ... . and it only gets worse as City has to face Kingston City on Saturday. Thunder hosts Goulburn Valley Suns on Saturday evening while Springvale heads away to battle Box Hill United. In the state leagues, South Springvale was smashed 0-3 by Manningham United Blues, Doveton had a 1-0 win over Caulfield United Cobras. Springvale City surged 3-1 ahead over Bayside, Hampton Park United knocked off crosstowners Endeavour Hills Fire 2-1, Noble Park did likewise against Lyndale United 4-0 as did Dandenong South with a 3-2 triumph over Keysborough. White Star Dandenong bested Casey Panthers 4-1 as Gianni Allebi booted a hat-trick.

Randle's drive through the pack
Conquering the famous Spa-Francorchamps, Thomas Randle claimed his second F3 triumph. “It all started at the beginning of the final lap Toby tried to hold me up so I wouldn’t get a good run, which is what anyone would do in that position. “The tow really helped me and about 300 me-
tres from the chicane I was ahead. “Once I got into the lead I was just focusing on putting in a really good middle sector so he wouldn’t have a chance to get me into the final chicane.”

Bruce Tycoon captured his and his owners’ first group race win when taking out the McKenna Memorial. Bruce Tycoon sprung out of box two and set up a commanding lead. He showed no signs of stopping as he went on to win by two and three-quarters in 34.10. “He’s done everything right from day one. He’s free-for-all class at both city tracks, we’ve been looking to step him up to 595m for a little while but nothing was around until heats of the McKenna,” Peter Riley said. “I’d say he’s underrated but how can you underrate a greyhound that has won over $100,000. "He’s a dog everyone would love to have in their kennel - he’s got a wonderful personality and just loves to race.” Bruce Tycoon, or Bruce as he’s known to connections, exceeded expectations of his owner Gary Micallef. Bruce Tycoon is owned and bred by the Odds and Evens syndicate.
Randle’s victory leaves him third in the championship - sitting on 335 points - as he’s now only 19 points adrift of leader Ricky Collard, with the penultimate round held at Snetterton in Norwich, UK.

Thomas Randle claimed his second BRDC British F3 win after a stunning drive through the field at the famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps course. Randle, 20, from Narre Warren North, had slim hopes of victory in Race Two at the illustrious Belgian track after starting from ninth. Having to work his way back up through the pack, around the intricate seven-kilometre course, the former Australian Formula Ford champion produced arguably one of the best performances of his career. He launched into his chase of the leaders from the get-go - Randle made a strong start which saw him latch onto the podium fight in the early laps. He soon found himself chasing leader Toby Sowery but faced a 1.6-second deficit with three laps remaining. The former Australian Formula 4 driver continued to push which saw him eat into Sowery’s advantage to set up a grandstand finish for the final lap. Randle, who scored his maiden F3 win at Rockingham in May, completed a pass for the lead on the Kemmel Straight before going on take the chequered flag by a scant 0.4 of a second from Sowery and Tarun Reddy. “The first lap was where it all started,” Randle said. “I made a good start and got two cars into turn one and then got another two down the Kemmel Straight. “I really tried to keep my head down, keep it clean and I had a really good battle with Enaam Ahmed my team-mate, Matheus Leist and Tarun Reddy. “I think the hardest thing about the race was trying to break the tow because if you could do that you had a good chance of winning.” Heading into the final few turns, Randle aimed to latch onto Sowery and use the tow in to his advantage. “On the last lap I was hoping I could get on to the back of Toby Sowery and we had a great battle for the win.

Driving was accompanied by a surprisingly deep-throated note redolent of a larger capacity engine. Column-mounted paddle shifters allow great-
er speed and control over gear shifts, while a faster rack is designed to make steering even more precise and direct. Handling of the test car was faultless. However, the same cannot be said of the ride, which due to extra-low profile tyres and stiffer suspension, picked up the smallest blemish in the road.
Uneven surfaces had the car rocking and rolling, while pot holes put the occupants through a thorough shaking, resulting in a chorus of protest. Brakes had the power to pull up the car from high speed but in stop / start town traffic had a tendency to be grabby unless treated with consistent foot pedal pressure.
