■ 'Mayor' of Blind Bight says it with flowers...

IN Blind Bight, a flower a day keeps the ambulance at bay. Known to some as the unofficial Mayor of Blind Bight, Bob O’Connell knows his neighbours by nickname and by flower. Bob has managed to walk his dog, keep his “beer belly” down, and check up on his over 65-year-old neighbours with the help of a flower, for around 16 years. To ensure his ageing neighbours, who live alone are safe and well, Bob drops a flower off at their door on his morning walk. “If I don’t see them that’s when I drop the flower,” Bob said. “And if it’s not picked up the next day I’ll knock on their door.” Some days it might just be a sprig of tea-tree, but it’s a message that someone cares, Bob said. “Everyone looks out for one another in small communities, and dropping the flower off is a way of knowing they are alright without being too intrusive,” he said. Data released in August last year, from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), showed a direct correlation between falls in people over the age of 65. According to the AIHW the most common causes of injury in 2012-'13 were falls, at 40 per cent and transport crashes at 12 per cent. During that year over 170,000 people were hospitalised as a result of a fall. Over half the cases were people aged over 65 years, and most people hospitalised for a fall injury in this age group were women. The AIHW also reported an increase in injury hospitalisation, with falls the leading cause. Casey Neighbourhood Watch chairperson, Robert Ward has applauded the floral safety idea and hopes to see it spread across Casey. “It’s a great example of someone taking initiative to promote community safety,” Robert said. “And they are a very vulnerable cohort of older people living alone and this is a simple way of showing we care - it can make a world of difference.”

won’t stop walking anytime soon. “It’s a compulsory walk for the dog - so rain, hail or shine I’ll be walking, and of course I’ll be dropping off flowers,” Bob said. To get involved in Neighbourhood Watch in your area visit: www.nhw.com.au

School stands proud By GEORGIA WESTGARTH EIGHT years ago Kambrya College was the last school on a parent's list to send their child - now the revolutionised Berwick school can’t cope with enrolment numbers. Since ‘Revolution School’ aired on ABC TV in May this year, Kambrya College’s popularity with the nation and local families has skyrocketed. College principal Michael Muscat said he was in discussions with the Education Department on ways to cope with enrolment interest. “We are really starting to connect with the community and they have given us a vote of confidence,” Mr Muscat said. “We will grow from 1200 students to 1350 next year.” Mr Muscat confirmed changes would have to be made on school grounds to cater for the student boom. “We’ll have to bring in some extra accommodation for students, extra classrooms and employ some more teachers,” Mr Muscat said. Enrolment zoning is also expected to be discussed this month with the Education Department. “I think there is great days ahead for Kambrya College because of the quality of teaching we have here- they are always looking to improve their teaching,” Mr Muscat said. Despite the series capturing enraged parents, fights in the playground and a student being busted with marijuana the students' triumph won out in the end. The positive feedback for the school, which Mr Muscat said hit “rock bottom” in 2008, had been a wave of excitement for a school which was among one of the most consistently low-performing schools in the state. “We weren’t in control of this film series - we didn’t know what the out-

Aggravated burglary in broad daylight A WOMAN home alone in her Doveton home heard sounds outside before she heard footsteps in her kitchen. The offender was found rummaging through items in the woman’s bedroom, before fleeing the home through the front door with a laptop and some electrical goods. The aggravated burglary occurred on Tuesday 12 July around 4.30pm on Crimson Drive. Police conducted a doorknock of the street, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Narre Warren police station on 9705 3111. The woman was not injured in the break-in.

room for troubled students became a sub-school captain during the series and is still reaping the rewards. “Young Michael is moving from strength to strength,” he said. “He was the one actually that really

touched the big bad world, he’s got an enormous amount of personal feedback through social media and the vast majority of people congratulated him and wished him well.” Revolution School is available to watch on ABC iView.

A MAN has been charged after a woman was shot in the face with a speargun in Hallam on 16 July. The 43-year-old victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition after emergency services were called to a house in Cornwall Street just after 11.30pm. The 46-year-old Hallam man was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and appeared in an out-of-sessions court on 17 July. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 20 July.

Driver on the skids By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SOUTH East Skids driver whose club-registered Commodore did circular donuts next to another drifting car and a spectator inside an illegal street skid bowl was put on an 18-month community corrections order. Nicholas Sturzaker, 23, of Narre Warren South, pleaded guilty to two charges of reckless conduct endangering serious injury at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 July. Like 30-plus other offenders captured by Operation Regarder, Sturzaker’s driving was captured in hidden video footage at various South East Skids meets at an industrial estate in Licola Crescent, Dandenong South. In footage shown to the court, Sturzaker’s white VL Commodore spun close to the crowd of up to 400 ringing the skid bowl after midnight on 8 December. Within the copious tyre-smoke,

an unknown male approached within a metre of the car to film the spectacle. At the same location on 30 December, Sturzaker’s car followed another car into the skid bowl, and performed burnouts and donuts in unison for about a minute. He re-entered the bowl a second time and dropped a burnout thick with smoke for about a minute while people were attending a damaged vehicle in the bowl. In the process, his rear tyres blew and sparks flew into the crowd, the court was told. He drove back into the bowl minutes later, and performed another burnout. Police intercepted Sturzaker soon after, observing tyre rubber sprayed onto the car’s rear guards, two popped tyres in the boot as well as equipment for changing tyres in the back seat. Sturzaker told the court he had

completed a court-ordered safedriving program after being found guilty of previous dangerous driving and loss of traction offences in 2013 and 2014. Defence lawyer Nick Power said Sturzaker, who was diagnosed with ADHD and recently used ice, had been “incredibly” affected by the death of a close friend in a car crash. Unlike many other Operation Regarder offenders, Sturzaker’s car was not forfeited and crushed. Sturzaker had been unable to get the car to police due to it being undriveable. In the meantime, it had been towed away by a local council and was no longer in Sturzaker’s possession, Mr Power said. The lawyer conceded Sturzaker was “at risk” of being jailed due to his priors. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Sturzaker endangered people’s safety and lives, but avoided jail due

to his young age, early guilty plea and his new-found stability at work and home. “Hopefully, as you get older, you start to engage your brain before you engage another part of your body.” Sturzaker was convicted and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work as part of his communitybased sentence. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months - on top of a current demerit-point suspension until April. “He needs to grow up and be off the road a significant period,” Mr Vandersteen said. After the hearing, Sturzaker posted on his Facebook page news footage of his case, and added hashtags “STURZYISFREE“ and “STURZYDROPTHECLUTCH“. Sturzaker next appears in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on a driving-while-suspended charge on 1 August.

New start kicks off in Lynbrook By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WHEN income doesn’t match expenditure even the most finance savvy can’t fix the problem- and it’s one that’s stretching across the region. “Many times we’ll go to fill out a budget and the rent is almost as much as the income,” executive officer at Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) Leanne Petrides said. “What do you do? You can’t even help, there’s no magic wand to help them save money because it’s not there.” Ms Petrides calls it the worst part of her job. But in a bid to help more struggling families, CISS has extended their services to the growing southeast suburb of Lynbrook. “We are trialling it until the end of this year,” Ms Petrides said. The trial will mean clients from Hampton Park, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and surrounds can access crisis support intervention from the Lynbrook Community Centre. “Some of our services are delivered by appointment only on Mondays and Fridays,” Ms Petrides said. “We’ve been looking to make it easier for people to access our services and Hampton Park would be the second largest group of people we service after Cranbourne locals- so it is an ideal location.” With a lack of affordable housing a common thread for CISS support workers, Ms Petrides said the Government-funded ‘Newstart Allowance’ for people seeking employment

is “unliveable”. “Newstart is an unliveable income and the Government’s reason for why is because it is an incentive for people to go get a job and earn a better income. “But the Business Council of Australia said that they supported a rise in the Newstart allowance because people can’t afford to look for a job on such little money,” she said. Ms Petrides listed: transport, access to a computer and competition as brick walls Newstart job seekers face. “The business sector is one area you wouldn’t expect to support a rise in welfare but they can see the economic benefits playing out if people had a little more money to live on,” Ms Petrides said. “Living on welfare is not a holiday, people say these dole bludgers are sitting around on the dole- trust me it’s not fun, it’s hard work, unless you are living in your parents’ home. “They have to attend working for the dole programs and apply for a certain number of jobs each week.” Ms Petrides said one client at her Cranbourne centre was desperate to find a job and at one stage applied for 29 jobs in three weeks. “It’s a constant battle of survival for these people- it’s one thing going to a bulk billing doctor but they walk out with scripts thinking what can they sacrifice to afford the medication,” she said. Anyone in need of financial assistance or counselling can contact CISS in Cranbourne on: 5996 3333.

A THIRTEEN-year-old boy was lucky to have slept in his own bed last night. The Cranbourne school boy was approached and chased by a man dressed in black and wearing a black balaclava, on Sunday 17 July, in Narre Warren South. The youth was walking alone along The Esplanade about 5.20pm when a white Holden sedan slowed down beside him. The offender, described as overweight, grabbed the boy by the wrist, while another man had the car running. The teenager kicked the offender in the shin and ran 100 metres with the perpetrator following him before the man got into the car and fled the scene. The white Holden was last seen travelling north on The Esplanade. The driver of the car was described as an “elderly” Caucasian male, with a long greying beard and a black zip up jumper with a Harley Davidson logo on the front. Another white Holden sedan was spotted in the same vicinity at the time of the attempted kidnapping. No registration plates were recorded and police are conducting an investigation. The boy’s dad was called to the scene and police attended, but no-one was traced. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Narre Warren police station as soon as possible on 9705 3111.

Footpath ambush TWO female friends were ambushed on a Hampton Park footpath by a man who threatened them with a machete. The girls were walking on Hallam Road when a car came to a halt with three men inside. The black Holden sedan stopped near the pair about 4.50am, on Saturday 16 July before a man of African appearance got out of the car holding a machete, and demanded the girls hand over a phone. One of the girls threw her phone on the ground and the perpetrator picked it up and jumped back in the car. The car, described as similar to a Holden Cruise, was last seen travelling towards Huntington Drive. Police attended the scene and no one was injured in the robbery.

Armed servo robbery THREE crooks armed with an axe, machete and knife stole cash from a Lynbrook service station, about 1.50am on Sunday 17 July. The armed trio were still on the run, last tracked by the dog squad travelling on foot towards the Lynbrook train station. The aggravated burglary was at the Dandenong-Hastings Road 24-hour petrol station. One of the dark skinned offenders, who was wearing all black and a balaclava and armed with an axe, waited in the store as his accomplice jumped the counter and stole a drawer out of the cash register. The crooks threw a brick at the glass door before kicking the door and squeezing through a gap to gain entry. The first offender to enter the store was armed with a knife and was described as wearing grey pants, white runners and a black hooded jumper, balaclava and gloves. The trio escaped with the drawer of cash.

Faith takes to airwaves By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GAMINI Sonseka is no shock jock. The mild-mannered presenter of a Multi-faith Network hour each Sunday morning on Casey Radio (3SER) says he wants people to learn about different faiths in a non-combative way. Mr Sonseka, a Buddhist and a Sinhalese interpreter from Lynbrook, emphasises several times: “We are not going to debate or criticise the other faiths. “We are not going to convert anyone to any faith or religion”. He is certainly loath to tackle faith-based political debates or hostilities around the wartorn planet. It’s more about tips on how to medicate, and what events are coming up at temples, mosques and churches. Last year, his program received no complaints but many compliments, he says. “We’re just here to educate on a particular faith through the faith leaders. “We don’t just target an audience of one faith. We can all learn about something about other faiths.” On 7 August, the volunteerrun program celebrates its fifth anniversary. From the start, Mr Sonseka has been in the host chair for an audience of about 2000.

SETH Sleep may not have had a pushbike for more than a month, but he did have a band of friends at Corvettes of Melbourne, ready to get him some new wheels. Leukaemia deprived nineyear-old Seth of riding his Giant BMX, which was gifted to him by his poppy - and then thieves did. The bike was spotted missing from the Sleep’s garage in Narre Warren South on Friday 27 May. After a wide police search, the BMX worth close to $500 wasn’t found. Having beaten the blood

cancer late last year, Seth had been behind the handles of his BMX just a dozen times before it was stolen. The bike was originally bought to help strengthen Seth’s legs after 70 rounds of chemotherapy. Seth’s dad Simon Sleep said he was “overwhelmed” with the support from Corvettes of Melbourne (COM) and Kristjan Snorrason owner at Berwick Cycles. “Kristjan contacted me via Facebook and said that he and his wife had a bike they’d like to give Seth,” he said. But Seth didn’t like the colour and the

right one got ordered. With some fund-raising from COM and Berwick Cycles' generosity, Seth now has a bike. COM raised $500 for the Sleep family. “Berwick Cycles discounted the bike Seth had chosen and gave both Seth and his sister, Holly helmets because Seth’s was also stolen with the bike,” Simon said. COM met Seth at Puffing Billy to officially present him with his new bike and to take a look at their own sparkling wheels.

Theft haunts anxious mum By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT IS therapy and heightened anxiety for Diana and a “slap on the wrist” for one of the youths responsible for her ongoing paranoia. The Cranbourne West mum, who wishes to remain anonymous, has “no words” for what her life has become after ‘Apex style’ offenders stole her two family cars on Sunday 5 July last year. Thieves broke into Diana’s residence at the time, in Narre Warren North, between 12.30am and 3am, through a locked front door- while her family and two young children were asleep. Diana’s handbag which held two iPads and car keys to her white Subaru Liberty GT Premium and her husband’s Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo were pinched. The Subaru had sentimental personalised number plates, PIPPYD. Which were gifted to her from her grandfather, who passed eight years ago and haven’t been recovered a year on. Police tracked down the Subaru five days after the aggravated burglary and Diana’s husband’s car was also found two days later- badly “banged up”. The family now reside in Cranbourne West but Diana says despite the move, her life remains plagued by the breakin. “The aftermath is terrible. I have to deal with anxiety, something I never had before,” she said. “I now need to see a therapist, I don’t like driving at night and try not to at all expense;

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE More concrete!

There’s been an upward trend at the Bunjil Place site over the last month as pre-cast wall panels are installed, scaffolding is erected and concrete pouring continues. The level one suspended slab of the Library has been poured, and the adjacent Gallery is being prepared for framing. Back-of-house theatre areas (such as the green room) are being established and the auditorium itself is starting to come out of the ground. This will take the longest to build and fit out so it’s great to see progress.

The sentimental number plates are still missing. I’m also out of pocket, and they simply got a slap on the wrist. I have no words.” “I needed to see a counsellor as I was very emotional, and she passed me onto a therapist. I’m not generally like this, but now I have a fear at night. “I can’t have the blinds open when it's night time because I feel like people can see me and know what I’m doing, but I can’t see them.” In May this year, Diana received a letter explaining how one of the perpetrators caught for aggravated burglary had had their case heard at a children’s court. “The letter said the court had found the offender guilty and sentenced them to a youth supervision order of 12 months without conviction,” Diana said. “If anything it should be on their record. “I was told it was a group

and only one was found. It is scary and disheartening to know that they have been found guilty- which is a great resultbut without conviction at all, means they will never have to answer to it again.” Diana’s beloved Subaru was found at a property in Dandenong off Kirkham Road. “I believe police raided a property, and five cars were found, one of them was mine and one of them was a gold Mercedes,” Diana said. “These offenders are a part of a wider network who are still committing these crimes and they get to walk away with no conviction. But we are the ones that have to deal with the psychological and financial strain. “We are walking away a lot worse off and it's upsetting.” Anyone who sees suspicious behaviour in their street is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Letters Tunnel vision CLAIMS about Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury trains losing direct access to three of five city stations (Costly Downgrade, News, 14 July) miss the fact that the Metro Tunnel is the first step in delivering for Melbourne the type of metro-style rail system that is a key element of many of the world’s great cities such as London, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore. Metro systems provide ‘turn up and go’ services with more frequent and reliable trains, along with fast and convenient direct interchanges with other lines. Passengers on the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines will have access to five new stations through the heart of the city via a fleet of new high capacity trains which will deliver them to destinations such as Arden, Parkville and Domain for the first time. They will also be able to interchange with City Loop services and stations with a minimum of fuss at both Melbourne Central and Flinders Street. Evan Tattersall, CEO, Melbourne Metro Rail Authority.

Diana gripped by anxiety after gang theft of cars: Yep same here. He was probably back at it the minute he walked from the cop shop. Helen McKee, via Facebook Yup been through this five months ago. It's horrible how we feel after and they just get slap on wrist ... disgusting. Ashlee Slater, via Facebook Federation steps into Monash: Good news that it's been taken over although I was excited about the prospect of it being taken over by Charles Darwin University as was suggested a few months back. They were proposing to offer a full range of courses in Berwick whereas I suspect under Federation, Berwick will remain a smaller campus with limited course offering, the thing that caused the ultimate demise of the campus for Monash. They were never committed to offering a full suite of courses at Berwick as they felt doing so would detract from their other campuses. And again, with this decision to sell to Federation they have made the decision based on their feeling that Federation offers minimal competition. Had they sold to Charles Darwin, they would have sold to a real competitor which may have given them a challenge but would have served Berwick the region, and the current and future students of the area much better. THINGS were pretty different at a Casey Council meeting on 19 July. Channel 9’s A Current Affair film crew was the first with permission to film a council meeting in years - no doubt attracted by recent rate-capping, secret decisions and resident over-charging controversies. It seemed there was a special effort to show off the new, more transparent council. One agenda item was moved out of closed business to be debated in the open. There was even a rush of hands by councillors to second a motion to allow ACA to film the meeting. Outspoken mayor Sam Aziz - never short of a word to some members of the gallery - was a notable apology. After the meeting, ACA interviewed Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association member Brendan Browne and former councillor Paul Richardson on the steps of the civic centre.

However it got some stern rebuffs from two gallery members. One told them “I don’t think you report fairly and responsibly”, another brushed them off with an argument rounded off by a comment that “TV is weird”. Will be interesting to see what story arises.

ANOTHER accused made little attempt to hide the proceeds of crime. The woman had allegedly stolen an airconditioner and clothing from a neighbour’s house, but the game was up when the neighbour spotted the woman wearing the stolen clothes down the street.

A HAPLESS accused in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court seemed to find new ways to plant evidence on himself. The court was told of when the man was pulled over by police and stepped out of his car. Unbeknown to him, the front of his trousers was plastered with empty plastic drugdeal bags. He was also facing charges of breaching an intervention order protecting his partner - who conceived their newly-born child while the accused was prevented from any sort of contact with her.

THE evidence didn’t quite come together so easily for police in another case. A man had been discovered in his bedroom with more than $1000 in cash, a Nutribullet with what was believed to be heroin residue, digital scales and a hydraulic press. The press was believed by police to be used to press pills of heroin with an artificial sweetener filler, but it couldn’t be proven so. As a defence lawyer said, a hydraulic press could be used for anything - and so the relevant charge was dropped.

Dumping dilemma fill- which are funds that should be directed into their important community programs and services.” Casey councillor Damien Rosario said the council had taken action at the Hampton Park Salvation Army store after receiving a substantial number of complaints, many of which were from the piles of ‘donations’ dumped during the Easter long weekend. “Council used CCTV footage captured on Good Friday to identify and issue 11 infringement notices to people who dumped items at the store,” Cr Rosario said. “Council will continue to work with the Hampton Park store, as well as others across Casey, to put a stop to rubbish dumping at charity stores.” Fellow councillor Wayne Smith added that residents can dispose of unusual items at transfer stations, private waste collection or via the council’s free hard waste collection service. “Each household is entitled to book two free hard waste collections of up to three cubic metres of hard waste per year,” Cr Smith said.

Casey ranked above Greater Dandenong which had just 45 claims. Victoria Police recorded 18,853 car thefts last year, an increase of 13.5 per cent compared to 2014. Thefts from motor vehicles also increased on average to more than 150 a day, many went unresolved. RACV acting general manager Insurance Mark Geraghty said the data highlighted the need for motorists to ramp up car safety.

Casey ranks high for car thefts, damage THE City of Casey loses more cars to thieves than most of the state. Statistics from RACV insurance claims show a high rate of Nissans, Subarus and Toyotas targeted by crooks while Casey residents made 69 claims last year to the insurance giant. Greater Geelong topped the list for the most RACV car theft claims in 2015 with 88, Brimbank came in at number two with 76 claims and

ILLEGAL dumping continues to plague Casey charity stores, despite Casey council working with police to combat the illegal activity. The ongoing issue outside Hampton Park Salvation Army and charity stores in Lurline Street, Cranbourne, has prompted a strong message from the City of Casey. Mayor Sam Aziz said putting donations at shop doors outside opening hours was illegal. “Leaving goods outside a store when it is closed is considered dumping and those who do so face a fine of $303,” Cr Aziz said. “Dumped items affect the amenity of the area and are a significant financial burden for charity stores. “The items are often rummaged through and damaged, stolen, vandalised or ruined by the weather and are then unsuitable for sale or re-use.” But the sad consequence of illegal dumping is the costs it imposes on charities. Cr Aziz said: “It costs charities a large amount of money to clean up and dispose of these goods at land-

"More than five per cent of RACV vehicle theft claims last year involved the thief stealing car keys from inside a house before taking the vehicle. Don’t leave your car keys in plain view." Casey also ranked number three in the state for malicious damage claims- Casey RACV members made 43 claims last year. Last year some of the 10 most damaged car models included the

Mazda CX-7, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Golf and Holden Cruze. Mr Geraghty said most malicious damage resulted from vandals breaking into vehicles, smashing windows, keying or scratching and denting bonnets and car roofs. “In some instances, keys were left in the ignition or elsewhere in a car in a locked garage, which makes it easy for a thief who has broken into the garage,” he said.

family” had been significantly intoxicated. Mr Vandersteen said: “You can see why he’s coming and going. He’s seeking opportunity.” The lawyer replied: “I wouldn’t put it like that. He was drunk as a skunk. “It’s ludicrous behaviour. If he was looking to seek an opportunity, they’d probably pick a better time than when she is in bed with her partner. “He is drunk to his eyeballs and doesn’t know what he’s doing.” The accused - with a “deep sense of shame” - was described by work-mates and family as friendly, generous, smiling, courteous and respectful, the lawyer said. Mr Vandersteen ordered the man to undertake a community corrections assessment, including a report on whether more than alcohol lay behind his offending. The man avoided jail because he was very young, had no relevant priors and pleaded guilty, avoiding a lengthy hearing for the complainants. “This is at a high end of seriousness. You violated by touching these women in a way that was uninvited. “There’s no way you’d tolerate that your daughter would be touched this way by another man. “He’s very lucky it’s not a more serious charge.” The man will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 August.

1230670-LB23-16

AN 18-YEAR-OLD man has been told he won’t be jailed after pleading guilty to two assaults on women in their beds after a drunken New Years’ Eve party in Clyde North. About 7.30am on 1 January, the man had entered the neighbour’s home through a broken roller door and knelt beside her as she lay next to her sleeping husband, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. The accused then intimately touched her with his fingers under the bed sheet in what magistrate Jack Vandersteen called a “higher end” sexual assault. “Even in the County Court, that’s a high end sexual assault.” The man sat in court next to his fiance - who was the mother of their nine-month-old daughter. They live with the man’s parents, who have moved from Clyde North since the offences. In a separate incident, about 6am on New Years’ Day, another woman woke to find the accused lying next to her in a “spooning position” with his arm resting underneath her breast. At the time, her intoxicated boyfriend was passed out elsewhere in the house. When she realised the accused wasn’t her boyfriend, she asked: “Who’s this?” The man - who was unknown to her - replied: “Shhh, go back to sleep” and snuggled into her, the court was told. Mr Vandersteen said he was surprised the man was charged with a common law assault, and not a second count of sexual assault, for the latter incident. During the night, revellers had been invited into each other’s houses, the court was told. The man’s lawyer said the party-goers “became friends” and were drinking heavily during the night. It was “come and go as you please”, and the first time the accused from a “God fearing

Funding push By ALANA MITCHELSON A CAMPAIGN supporting the lobbying efforts of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire councils for federal funding to upgrade Thompsons Road has found “unrealised opportunities” in the re-elected Coalition Government’s commitments for the outer suburbs. The Fund Our Future campaign’s petition, led by the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA), closed on the eve of Federal Election Day, having received more than 100,000 emails nation-wide supporting the need for a national dedicated infrastructure fund to address the chronic infrastructure problems in fast-growing outer suburban areas like Casey and Cardinia. While no such fund was promised, commitments such as the Western Sydney City Deal would benefit Australian outer suburbs in other states. But NGAA executive officer Ruth Spielman said there were “no particular commitments” to the Fund our Future demands for Melbourne’s suburban fringe and growth corridor. “Giving residents and businesses in the fast-growing outer suburbs the same opportunities and access to infrastructure as other Australians is not only a matter of fairness, it also adds up for the economy,” Ms Spielman said.

“Investment in the outer suburbs will outweigh the costs, create jobs, increase tax revenues and permanently boost the economy by billions per year. “Our campaign and the groundswell of community support have put the issues affecting outer suburbs, such as Pakenham and Cranbourne, on the table. “We will be working hard to keep them at the top of the government’s agenda.” Ms Spielman said the basis of the Fund Our Future campaign concept was to draw attention to the need for outer suburbs to have a distinct, longterm strategy in the same way as regional and rural areas do. She said that the Coalition’s new National Stronger Regions Fund, recently renamed the

Building Better Regions Fund, would now exclude the outer suburbs which previously had access to the funding. “The fund was one of the few avenues available to councils on the outskirts of our capital cities to access money for much-needed infrastructure,” Ms Spielman said. “Infrastructure Australia has underlined the need to better support population growth. It should not be made harder for these population hotspots to get assistance. “The redirection of this fund to rural, regional and remote areas only further supports the need for outer growth suburbs to have a dedicated approach. We will be seeking discussions with the government with a view to a better and fairer way forward for the five million people living in these areas.”

Centre design up for discussion CONSTRUCTION of a $6.6 million community centre and town square at Selandra Rise in Clyde North will start in early August, with works expected to be completed in October 2017. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said council would hold two community meetings next month to give residents the opportunity to view the design for the community precinct. “This project will deliver a much-needed community facility and town square for the growing Clyde North community, providing space for community service organisations to deliver key services and for community groups to come together to participate and con-

nect,” Cr Aziz said. “Reflecting feedback received from residents during community consultation, the design of the community centre incorporates halls and meeting rooms of varying sizes, an ecologically sustainable design, large foyer, exhibition space, and a commercial kitchen. “The town square will provide residents with an accessible and vibrant community precinct, creating connectivity between facilities and providing for a range of community activities, events and programs including an exciting public art collaboration with RMIT University.

“Council will host two community meetings on Thursday 18 August for residents to preview the precinct design, find out more about the project and have the opportunity to be involved in a naming competition for the new facility, so I encourage local residents to head along.” Casey has contributed $4.1 million to the project drawn from rates and developer contributions, with the remaining $2.5 million for the integrated community centre funded by the State Government. The meetings will be held at 4.30pm and 7pm at Selandra Community Place, 2 Forest Drive, Clyde North.

Birds eye view of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital. 156734

Expansive new medical facility WITH the new St John of God Berwick Hospital well underway at Kangan Drive, many are asking how it will affect and benefit them. All of the current services provided at the Gibb Street Hospital, including operating theatres and the maternity, surgical and medical wards, will be relocated to the new hospital once opened in late 2017. Beds in the units will increase to allow care for a growing number of patients. In addition, new services will be launched, including an intensive care unit, cardiac unit and a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory. Additional operating the-

atres will be opened, bringing the total to eight and an increase to six maternity birthing suites. Basement car parking will allow for 350 cars and at the completion of stage 2, the hospital will cater for 210 patient beds. Employment opportunities for 200 new roles will become available in early 2017 in preparation for opening later in the year. A total of 100 new doctors will also be required. “The construction of the new hospital, which is colocated with Monash Health’s Casey hospital, will form part of a major health precinct in Melbourne and take health care in the region to a new level,” St John of God Berwick Hospital

CEO Lisa Norman said. “The hospital is expected to be completed in late 2017, at which time all existing services provided by SJGBH at our historic Gibb Street site will be relocated to the new hospital.” “The number and range of services will be significantly expanded, and it is anticipated that the hospital will play a vital role in providing health care services in Eastern Victoria.” For further information on the St John of God Berwick Hospital redevelopment, visit www.sjog.org.au/berwickredevelopment or find St John of God Berwick Hospital on Facebook or Instagram.

Beautiful face of new nails DIAMOND Deluxe Nails and Beauty is the new face in beauty in Narre Warren South but, despite that, it offers a lot of experience. Owner Jessica, who has spent 22 years in the industry, said the new business offered nail and beauty services from waxing and facials to new SNS - healthy natural nails, not gel, not acrylic. It stocks the Nu Skin Care System and offers hot rock massage pedicures for improved circulation.

She said these help create healthy natural nails at a good price and with great service. “We are all new and have the latest equipment but we still have a lot of knowledge and pride ourselves on our customer service,” Jessica said. “We are also offering special opening specials including 15 per cent off normal prices until the end of July.” Although her business is new to the area, she said she had qualified, professional, courteous and knowledgeable

staff with a lot of experience in the industry. The focus of the business is firmly on customer service and introducing new products. Casey mayor Sam Aziz and Cardinia mayor Jodie Owen with the 2016 business award nominees.

Talk of the business world STRENGTHENING businesses through conversation was the theme on Thursday night when the Casey Cardinia Business award nominees were announced. Dozens of finalists were applauded at a cocktail function at Monash University, Berwick, and Casey mayor Sam Aziz said it like he saw it. “Tonight is about hearing from each other to strengthen economic viability of the whole region – one of the fastest growing in the state,“ Cr Aziz said.

have done just that – both taking home two nominations on the night. “Through the judging process, it has been very exciting to see the number of entrants, and in some categories, there are up to 19 applicants, so some tough decisions had to be made at this stage,” Cr Owen said. “We believe that one nomination is all it takes to shine a light on an outstanding business.” Unfortunately, all of the nominees from the Home-based Business Award were unable to attend the awards night.

Previous winners Kelly Sports were again nominated for the award, alongside Sam Michelle- Paintings and TravelManagers. A whopping 48 businesses were nominated on the night by the public for the People’s Choice Award as the voting lines remain open. Participants may vote as many times as they like, but only once per business. Voting closes on 12 August. Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday 16 September.

By CASEY NEILL TOYS for kids in need filled Dandenong RSL thanks to Victoria’s Nashos. The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia’s (NSAA) south-east sub-branch co-ordinated the collection on Saturday 9 July. Sub-branch president Mike Smith said the Salvation Army Toy Bank would distribute the haul of “several thousand toys”. “It’s on the condition that none of the toys are sold in their shops - they are all to be given away to needy kids,” he said. “They also give to other charities and they also give to jails.” He said Salvos case managers could recommend a child receive a certain item, like a bike for a boy so he can hang out with his pedalling mates. Mr Smith said the NSAA had donated up to 70,000 toys over the 13 years its run the project. “A lot of the branches donated toys. Some of the subbranches donate money, which we collect and we go to a wholesale toy place in Swift Way, Dandenong South,” he said. “They look after us and they also donate stuff as well.” Mr Smith said the toys ranged from bikes and scooters to teddies and dolls. “We’re also going out to the Salvation Army warehouse at

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Boom set for compelling vision By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS CASEY is on the threshold of a potential economic boom, according to speakers at a Narre Warren Region Business Group AGM on 13 July. Guest speaker Neville Waterman spoke fervently of his goal for Waterman Business Centre to help 5000 Casey businesses thrive. Mr Waterman has plans to replicate his Narre Warren-based centre across Melbourne to provide a “healthy environment” to support small businesses. Businesspeople needed to have a “healthy vision” with a “compelling why” - beyond making money, he said. His was to support small businesses, many which floundered without an effective support network. Mr Waterman said a cluster of thriving businesses would profoundly boost wellbeing in the City of Casey. “I believe the real key to the success of our nation is the prosperity of small businesses. “We could profoundly affect the lives of so many people.” Mr Waterman said most business people started out unsure of how to build a healthy business, worked harder than they had to and had an unbalanced lifestyle. He hoped to facilitate business leaders that were well-connected, inspired, working smarter not harder and learning from other successful entrepreneurs. “What if we could create this environment that this small business person who is failing and struggling ... that they could have all the supports.” He invited business people to an open day at Waterman Business Centre at Victor Crescent on 29 July. Also at the meeting, Mayor Sam Aziz said Mr Waterman was an “amazing man” and that he and his business incubator were “critical” to Casey council’s economic strategy. He outlined the council’s plans for a

Sam Aziz, Neville Waterman, Michael Spiteri and Narre Warren Region Business Group president Steve Osborne 156790 Narre Warren CBD structure plan to help guide $10 billion of expected development in one of Victoria’s 10 legislated major activity centres. “Casey is at an amazing threshold. There’s great opportunities coming along,” he said.

Cr Aziz said the council was in talks with the State Government to re-develop the suburb’s railway station, with highdensity housing nearby. He spoke of the need to create local employment with improved transport. He said it was unacceptable that 70

per cent of Casey residents travelled outside the municipality for work. The State Government’s $154 million promise to duplicate Thompsons Road would unlock a potential employment precinct and in turn create 100,000 jobs, Cr Aziz said.

In the next five years, Casey could be home to defence-industry firms and the state’s biggest car mega-mart, he said. Cr Aziz defended the under-construction civic-arts precinct Bunjil Place, expected to drive 1 million visitors into Narre Warren each year. He said “years of prudent financial planning” meant the $125 million project could be funded without raising rates “by a cent”. With an expected 100-year shelf-life, Bunjil Place would be paid off within 16 years, Cr Aziz said. He took aim at the “group of six people” Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association for wanting to “cancel the contract and stop building”. At the dinner at Kilgerron Homestead restaurant, Beehive Foundation chairman Michael Spiteri received $1000 from the Narre Warren Region Group. Mr Spiteri said the donation would help save up to 100 children’s lives. The foundation was formed in 2012 to build resilience in young people. Around the same time there was a wellpublicised youth suicide cluster in Casey. “Kids from normal families were struggling to cope with what life throws at them.” Mr Spiteri relayed the high rates of bullying, depression, self-harm and suicide among young people. Suicide was the largest cause of death in the 17-19 year old age group in Australia, he said. Beehive pitched itself as a way to help young people “maximise what they achieve in life” - while teaching coping skills such as ‘facing fear’ and ‘digging deep’ in school, sport and life. Since then, the foundation has reached 10,000 children, helped in a ‘Spirit of Football’ round in South East Juniors football and in Casey schools. “We know we have saved lives,” Mr Spiteri said.

Sargent draws on sweet skills Eat local,

dine global By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KATE Sargent isn’t that proud of the cake that snowballed her into a homecooked sweets enterprise. It was a top-deck cake - a vanilla and chocolate sponge with purple icing and flowers - cooked for her daughter’s first birthday. But the offering went down well and stirred Ms Sargent’s dormant passion for baking birthday cakes, cupcakes, cake balls and wedding cakes in her Cranbourne home kitchen. Ms Sargent said she always loved helping in the kitchen as a child, with particular fond memories of the classic Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake cookbook. “Children’s birthday cakes - that’s where my real passion is, especially for first birthdays and baby showers. “It’s my happy place. It’s just lovely to see the excitement on kids’ faces.” She said she now appreciates the real labour of love that her mother endured to re-create the Women’s Weekly cakes recipes. Requests came from time-poor friends for a variety of fun-themed birthday cakes.

Sargent Sweetness’s lavishly-iced cupcakes. 156471 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Kate Sargent and her children Jade and Sophie. 156471 Ms Sargent has created designs including Finding Nemo, Paw Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman. “Most of us don’t have as much time as we used to. They don’t have the time to organise a party and make the birthday cake as well.” Along the way she has perfected the art of edible, icing figurines and flowers.

She honed her technique at cooking classes and by astutely Googling cake-making videos on YouTube and pictures on Pinterest. Two years ago, her commandingly named home business Sargent Sweetness was officially born. The business name was a “cute play on words” using her married name. It means that if she divorces, she loses her business, Ms Sargent jokes.

She adds that not only is she grateful for the name but also for her husband’s support for the enterprise. The business has gathered steam in the past six months through Facebook and dropping off business cards around the region. Ms Sargent is also gaining a profile with her chocolate-coated cake balls - sometimes with a shot of salted caramel - at the monthly night market

at Lynbrook Community Centre, and the recent decadent dessert-fest Winter Treats in Berwick. The next Lynbrook market, with children’s activities, teppanyaki and door prizes, is on 22 July, 5.30-9pm. Her chocolate-coated cake balls with a flavour shot of salted caramel went down a treat at the Winter Treats event in Berwick recently.

Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Hope’s star on the rise By JARROD POTTER CRICKET is the game that keeps on giving Hope Kareta plenty to smile about after an incredible last week of indoor action. Kareta, 13, from Hampton Park, is still fairly new to the Australian summer pastime - having only joined up on a whim to fill in for Dandenong West a couple of seasons back - but her star is on the rise as she’s reached the peaks of indoor representative cricket already. She was not only picked for the Cricket Victoria under-14 indoor cricket squad, which headed off to Dubbo, New South Wales, last week for the national indoor championships, but was also its captain and an integral all-round part of the championship winning side. “It meant a lot (to be named captain) - it was hard to take in,” Kareta said. “They said it was because I was supporting the girls, even at the trials I was loud, speaking up and supporting the girls.

“I’ve never been a captain before, but it was a great feeling to get it for Victoria. “I was pretty nervous at the start, but I got used to it quickly, playing with the other girls and we got pumped up for the first game, won it and just carried it on for the whole tournament. Leading the Victorian Hammer, Kareta and her team-mates blasted past ACT in the Australian Indoor Junior Championships finale to avenge a preliminary rounds loss and hoist the trophy. “The previous game before our grand final - against New South Wales - we actually did really well and carried it on to the grand final,” Kareta said. “We started off well (in the grand final), won the toss and ACT was doing pretty good in the batting, but our bowling was on the feet and they couldn’t really bat to it. “We had a positive mindset heading into it - losing is not an option.”

Kareta was also picked for the Australian All Star team to cap off her stellar winter and give her plenty of confidence heading into summer. She’s not sure whether she’ll head across to Dandenong Lions Women’s Cricket Club or stay with Dandenong West in the DDCA outdoor cricket competition. But the star all-rounder already has an impressive century against her name - which she smashed in 2015 for Dandenong West in the under-13 competition ... without even knowing it. “I was batting with my captain Jake (Goodes) and he helped me through it, so I was just batting where I bat usually,” Kareta said. “I didn’t know until I walked off the field and they were beeping the horns and telling me to put my bat up.” Kareta wanted to thank her Victorian coaches for giving her the opportunity to captain the state.

Whether with bat or ball, indoor or outdoor, Hope Kareta is smashing her way Picture: JARROD POTTER through the cricket ranks. 156864

Tears for a champion BEAU Miller was a champion footballer but to the people who loved him at the Devon Meadows and Tooradin Football clubs -he was much, much more than that. The 34-year-old lost a short and aggressive battle against cancer last week, leaving behind wife Stephanie and two young boys, Chase, 5, and Tripp, 8 months. Beau’s passing caused an outpouring of emotion across the region, with tears flowing freely as a courageous and determined footballer was remembered fondly. “For such a champion footballer he was such a humble bloke who always wanted to be the best he could possibly be,” said Devon Meadows coach Glenn Michie. “It’s such a huge loss for his family and such a massive loss for football.” For more tributes to Beau, grab a copy of this week’s Berwick-Pakenham Gazette.

BIG V - ROUND 17 CASEY Cavaliers have all but booked their place in the BIG V top three after bouncing back from their Saturday loss with a 25-point triumph over Mildura on Sunday. With head coach Stewart Baird sidelined for a couple of rounds, assistant coach Simon Phillips stepped up to run the side across the weekend’s Division 1 double-header. There was no easing into the coach’s ranks for Phillips though as he faced the fast-paced Sunbury Jets in an up-anddown 66-72 defeat. The Cavaliers didn’t gel early as the hosts got out of the blocks via Ishmael Sanders (24 points) and Mitchell Newton (19 points, 12 rebounds). It took the Herculean shooting of Bevan Camilleri (16 points) from outside the arc to bring the Cavs back into it, but in the end the short-lived revival was snuffed out by the Jets launching into one last match-winning attack. “Sunbury on Saturday night - they outhustled us and were ready to play and we weren’t,” Phillips said. “They got us probably in their defensive end as we had no function in offence and relied on shooting outside too often instead of getting it inside. “Took us to the fourth quarter to work out our offence and get back into it, and it was Bevan Camilleri who was really the one who brought us into it - hit five three pointers in a row, were down by 12 then we went up by two ... he went off the bench and went wild.” The Cavs men bounced back on Sunday though, defending home-court with gusto against Mildura in a 98-73 walkover. Despite backing up from the night before, Casey shone across the board as Matt Witherden (18 points, six rebounds), Ben Louis (17 points) and Brent Hobba (11 points, eight rebounds)

racked them up from limited minutes. On top of those usual suspects, the stand-in coach was pleased with the entire roster to step up and earn their extra minutes. “They were definitely stunned by the loss against Sunbury and we had a pretty good strong chat before the game and had our game-plan and stuck by it and the results show,” Phillips said. “The way we moved the ball offence and created space, the way we followed the plan was a very good point and didn’t vary from it even when they threw different defences at us. “I was very happy with the efforts of Brad Szalek in the second game and Sean Mckinnon in the second game as well - they were following the instructions when they went out and their minutes increased because of it.” Phillips will be on the sidelines again for the Chelsea match this weekend with Baird hoping to return courtside for the last home-and-away match at Geelong as the Cavs maintain a slight possibility of finishing second in Division 1. Casey firmed as the side to beat in

Division 2 Women after knocking over Mornington in a 70-64 thriller as the cavalry returned to the court for the highly anticipated clash. Ruchelle Mccracken (13 points, nine rebounds) shrugged off the ankle injury that sidelined her for the second half last week to post her usual impressive haul. Also back on court on Sunday was Bec Magdich (16 points) who came back from a thumb injury superbly to rack up one of her best in 2016 off only 20 minutes court-time. The other two main pieces of the Cavaliers’ puzzle - star centre Tarryn Wilkin (12 points, 20 rebounds) and Cyanne Mather (11 points, five assists) kept the tempo up all night to lead the visitors to their seventh win on the trot. Casey Youth Men flogged Mildura 71-39 as Brandon Paris (15 points) Sam Pike (13 points, 11 rebounds), Charlie So (nine points), Cameron Van Harten (nine points) and Mitch Taylor (eight points) stuffed their stat-sheets. Casey’s women host North East on Saturday night while the Youth Men will head across to Mornington on Sunday afternoon for a first-versus-second mega-showdown in YLM2.

Casey pipped by a point By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 15 TWO terms rarely adds up to a win as Casey found out in a demoralising onepoint defeat at the hands of Footscray. Compounding Casey’s problems, Jake Gains and Dylan Collis had to back up from Friday night’s reserves match following the late withdrawal of Chris Dawes and Josh Wagner from the Casey squad. But overall Casey thrived in the gale-force conditions early - roosting it long and letting the likes of Tim Smith (3), Liam Hulett and roaming ruckman Jake Spencer sort things out. Spencer kept busy across the afternoon - burdening the lion’s share of Casey’s ruckwork against Will Minson in a captivating battle. It showed there’s life yet in the VFL ruck division especially with sides circling Minson for trade week. Ben Newton (2) fired early to boot the visitors ahead by 21 at the first break ... but where did Casey go after that? Against the wind, the Scorpions were bystanders, passengers and buckpassing as the Bulldogs stormed back ahead and then some. There was no resistance of any substance when the wind blew in the Scorpions’ faces ... leaving a lot to be desired after the break. But chalk and cheese was the contrast of second and third terms - Casey was electric with the wind again. The main sails went up and Casey started to broadside the Bulldogs. From all points the Scorpions surged. Jack Hutchins, Lynden Dunn and Declan Keilty picked off the errant defen-

sive-50 to drill it back to the likes of Alex Neal-Bullen, Viv Michie and Dean Terlich. It was carnage throughout the visiting forward-arc as Footscray was given time to sit and admire the destructive force. Trengove, Bugg, Michie, Cam Pedersen, Tim Smith, Smith, Paul Pattison and Ed Morris - the goals were piled to the sky in the incredible third term as Casey pushed itself back out in front. But it wasn’t just the goals in the third, it was the intensity around the contest, the tackling and ability to contest every Footscray possession that saw Casey shine. That tempo continued through the fourth term ... at least for the start of it. The first 20 minutes belonged to Casey as it restricted the Dogs across half-back. Former Dandenong Stingray Bailey Dale (four goals) was the Scorpions’ heartbreaker as he found his feet when it mattered most. The Doggies barked back in the final 10 minutes as eventually the bow broke and Casey lost its nerve. The backs rushed, the midfielders scrambled and nothing could be done to stop the relentless wave of Dogs’ pressure. Booting it back to three points, it boiled down to each contest. Heartbreakingly, Casey would kick in, it went out of bounds on the full. Footscray would boot a point and rinse, lather, repeat. The match-winning behind came from the boot of Anthony Barry, giving the faithful the biggest celebration at the Kennel in years after claiming the 12.12 (84) to 13.5 (83) victory.

Neal-Bullen (37 possessions), Dunn (25), Clayton Oliver (25) led the way for the Scorps while Tommy Trengove (23) and Bugg (22) were also impressive in defeat. “If we think we can compete and play two and a half quarters of footy at a level we expect, we’re kidding ourselves,” Casey coach Justin Plapp said. “The most disappointing thing to come out of it was that we got what we deserved today - we were non-existent in the second quarter, maybe five minutes at the back end of the second quarter were we got the game on our terms and played the way we wanted it to be played. “Then we come out and have an eight-goal third quarter and play some pretty inspiring and tough footy. “We were always going to have our backs up against it with the wind - that

It should be fun.” The Panthers have already made plenty across the league stand up and take notice of their premiership aspirations for the upcoming season, and Dodd’s signing shows the club truly means business. DEVON Meadows has boosted its premiership chances even further by signing former Glasscock Medallist Jason Dodd for the 2016/'17 West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) season. Dodd, 34, arrives at Glover Reserve after two seasons coaching Aura Vale in the Ferntree Gully Cricket Association’s (FTGDCA) second division where he scored 464 runs at 24.42 and took 48 wickets at 19.94 in all competitions. Prior to his stint at the Lakers, Dodd enjoyed a stellar career at Beaconsfield, in which he played in five premierships and represented the WGCA in multiple Country Week campaigns. “I’m looking forward to it,”

United looks for solid end to season

Cranbourne just didn’t want to win By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 13 ONE step forward and sadly for Cranbourne ... the intensity of VFL competition has forced it to take one step back. After last week’s glorious victory over VU Western Spurs - its first against a former Premier Six team - Cranbourne went into Sunday’s road-trip clash against Geelong brimming with confidence. While Cranbourne was undermanned - missing a number of first-choice players like Ash Fennell and Courtney Clarkson - the squad it put on the park had what it takes to battle Geelong. Cranbourne’s usual tenaciousness and pressure at the contest was missing as the hosts slipped tackles and generally lead the visitors around Osbourne Park. But despite its lacklustre effort at times, Cranbourne found a way to boot ahead at the half as Bianca Jakobsson (3) and Kirsten Mcleod (2) weaved around the Magpies’ defence. The ebb and flow of the match went both ways ... until Geelong cracked the game open in the dying minutes of the game. From 49-50 down at one stage in the last, Cranbourne faded away as Lucy Degroot (3) and Richelle Cranston kicked the hosts into a 9.10 (64) to 7.7 (49) triumph. “Missing a lot of girls so the job fell on a few others and we just didn’t stand up,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said. “When push came to shove they wanted it more. “At their home deck they’re pretty hard to beat and just had more want, more effort, ran harder and worked harder than us.

“We tried hard, we were in the game and had a good 10-15 minute burst in each quarter ... would gain control and dictate terms and control the footy after that but just didn’t put enough scoreboard pressure on them. “That’s been our problem all year and haven’t been able to turn possession into goals.” Smith praised Jakobsson for yet another starring performance out of the Bulldogs AFL utility - as she reeled in 30 marks and almost singlehandedly dragged the Eagles to victory. He also thought Shannon Barnes down back alongside two players Smith believes should be in the Exhibition Series squads - Kirsten Mcleod and Cara Moody. “Macca when she got off the leash exposed them for speed up forward as she’s probably one of the best small forwards going around and maybe doesn’t get the credit she deserves,” Smith said. “I’d be disappointed if she doesn’t get drafted as she’s raw and explosive. “Cara Moody is the same - she annihilated them in the ruck all day ... killed (Maddie) Boyd in the ruck all day, but we didn’t capitalise on those hit outs and got beaten around the stoppages. “I still think she’s one of the better rucks in the competition and doesn’t get beaten often - I struggle to think of someone who has beaten her properly.” Brittany Read made her VFL debut, another Eagle to transition from the South East Juniors Youth Girls program into the club’s senior ranks. The eighth ranked Cranbourne have five rounds left in the maiden VFL season, starting on Saturday afternoon when it battles Eastern Devils at Casey Fields.

Holt’s family of friends By DAVID NAGEL JODIE Holt played in Cranbourne’s only senior netball premiership and has won multiple best and fairest awards but they don’t rate as the highlight of a career that reached 250 games against ROC on Saturday. Jodie, who started playing in 2003 and is the club’s games record holder, said the highlight was sharing experiences with her muchloved extended family. “I love the fact I’ve made lifelong friends through netball and football - it is like having one big extended family,” Jodie said. “Especially over the last two to three years at our club, there are people that have gone through some really hard times and to see everyone come together and support them, whether they are close friends or not - there is nothing better to be a part of. And it’s something that Leigh and I can share together.” Her husband Leigh is a Cranbourne stalwart, a senior premiership player in 2011 and brother of Marc Holt, the club’s champion full forward of the last

NPLW VICTORIA - ROUND 18 WHAT started strongly for Southern United in its 1-2 loss to Alamein FC shows signs of growth heading into the final three rounds of the inaugural NPLW season. United opened the clash with a bang - Brittany Dudley-Smith (2’) was given far too much space in the first couple of minutes and made no mistake in finishing the job to put the side ahead. Comets Stadium whipped up the wind, making significant gains towards the goal a problem, but the visitors struck back with an early substitution. Switching tack, Alamein brought on Kelsey Hodges in an inspired move that quickly made an impact. She connected with Melina Ayres (21’) on a long ball, which proved no challenge for Ayres to slot comfortably. Soon after it was Hodges turn, getting on the end of a corner herself to push the score out to its final margin. Chances flew for either side in the second half, but at the end of the day Southern couldn’t find the equaliser. Southern will travel to Heidelberg United with win number three on its mind to try and cap off 2016 with another spot of success. Dandenong City’s NPL promotion hopes look dashed after a 0-1 heartbreaking loss at home, following a 90th minute penalty awarded to Brunswick City. Adam Wright (90+2’) had no trouble slotting the strike that has left Dandenong City in no man’s land between the promotion zone and the never-rans in NPL 2 East. The loss leaves City 13 points adrift of Kingston City heading into the last seven rounds ... and it only gets worse as City has to face Kingston City on Saturday. In the state leagues, Casey Comets took the trophy 1-0 in the regional derby against Berwick City, Doveton SC defeated Caulfield United via Aziz Bayeh’s solitary goal, Hampton Park United got up 2-1 over Endeavour Hills Fire while Endeavour United defeated East Brighton 2-0 and Casey Panthers fell 1-4 to White Star Dandenong. The women’s state leagues were led by resounding wins for Berwick City (5-3 over Monbulk) and Casey Comets (4-2 over Sandringham), Casey Panthers defeated East Bentleigh 2-1, while Dandenong City won 2-0 over South Melbourne as did Endeavour United over Old Mentonians.

Jodie was a reluctant watcher of the boys so decided to turn her attention to the court. “I didn’t love being there just watching football all day so when they started the netball I jumped at the chance to play,” the B Grade captain said. “I had played socially and knew some of the girls so thought why not. If

I was going to be there why not make some new friends and do something that I love.” Jodie has thrown her heart and soul into the club, being on the general committee since she started and president for the last three years. This is the first year she hasn’t been involved in an official capacity of some sort, but she has no plans on retirement.

“We have so many talented juniors coming through but if the body feels good and there’s a spot for me somewhere I’d love to play on with such a great group of girls.” Jodie wanted to thank everyone at the club for their support, but gave special mention to Karina Brady, Kristy Whitnell and Bec Sparks for making her big day so special.

NARRE WARREN CRANBOURNE

Battle for top spot By DAVID NAGEL A NEW complexion could be thrown over the South East Football Netball League on Saturday when Narre Warren host Berwick in a classic topof-the-table clash at Kalora Park. Top spot goes on the line as the intriguing Magpies face the proven reigning premiers in a perfect litmus test just five weeks out from this year’s finals series. And if the Magpies win -we’ve got a completely different ball game on our hands. Most pre-season predictions had Berwick way out in front, Cranbourne chasing, with the Magpies expected to take time to find their feet with so many new faces at the arrival desk. Big-name recruiting at both Doveton and Pakenham had the Magpies locked in for fourth or fifth on the ladder, but they’ve surprised many. That includes the leader of this week’s opponent, Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet. “Am I surprised, yeah probably because they’ve had such a high turnover of players, but they’re a great club Narre Warren,” Nisbet said.

“Sometimes a fresh voice, some fresh ideas, can really bond a group together and it seems to be the case with them this year.” The Magpies lost their opening game of the season, by a point to Doveton, but have since won nine of their 10, with their only loss to the Wickers by 39 points at Edwin Flack Reserve in round seven. On that occasion, it was a seven-goal haul to Mitchell Johnson that made the difference, slipping under Heath Black’s guard after three weeks in the reserves. But Black has his own issues this week, with star full-forward Darren Sheen to miss with an untimely groin injury and several others under injury clouds after a horror round 12 before last week’s bye. Expect players like Michael Collins, Col McNamara, Josh Tonna and Dylan Quirk to really lift for this one. They don’t like Berwick and would hate nothing more than handing over the title of “the last team to win back-to-back premierships” at the end of the season. And a win on Saturday will go a long way to-

wards avoiding that handover. The Magpies will come close, but in the end it will be Berwick’s ability to make the most of its chances -Ben Kearns and Tim Gunn in particularthat will be the key factor, come the final siren. It’s the Wickers to cement top spot with a 14-point triumph. Pakenham midfielder Russell Lehman provided the highlight of a lopsided round 13 on Saturday, kicking eight goals in the Lions 80-point victory over Hampton Park at Robert Booth Reserve. In other games, Marc Holt kicked seven in Cranbourne’s 88-point trouncing of Officer, while Mitch Johnson (5 goals) and Gunn (4 goals) kicked nine between them in Berwick’s 88-point victory over Beaconsfield. And Doveton stalwart Shannon Henwood kicked a career-high six goals in the Doves 75-point win over Tooradin. The Doves will unveil a new gun-recruit this week when Badu Island star Didymus Blanket makes his debut against Officer at Starling Road.

WHILE the cat’s away - the mice will play. Reigning premier and back-to-back fancy Narre Warren had the bye on Saturday allowing its main challengers to take centre stage in the South East Football Netball League. Beaconsfield was forced to battle hard against Berwick, Hampton Park and Doveton to build their percentage, while Cranbourne finally got rewarded for a solid recent run of form by sneaking into the top five for the first time this season. Of the contenders -only Tooradin took a backward step. It took Cranbourne until the final two minutes of play to finally roll over ROC, the Eagles coming from three goals down in the dying stages to keep their finals hopes alive. Cranbourne’s persistence paid off when it mattered most. Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) began to intercept and block shots, while at the opposite end of the court Alanah Hardy (goal shooter) and Tegan Stahl (goal attack) just couldn’t miss. Beaconsfield took the four points but looked a little scratchy in its seven-goal, 42-35, victory over a brave Berwick at Holm Park Reserve. Scores were locked at half time before the Eagles kicked into gear in the second half. Bianca Sanzaro (GS) had the hot hand in the third quarter, before handing over to Andi Dickson (GA)

who finished off the job for the second-placed Eagles. Amanda Goodie (GA), Sarah McDermott (wing attack) and Emily LaRoche (wing defence) were brilliant for the Wickers in the first half. Doveton made the biggest statement of the weekend, doubling Tooradin’s score with a crushing 70-35 victory at Robinson Reserve. The Doves had a bright new look, with star goaler Rahni Samason (GS) joined by Sam Gabriel (GA) in the attacking ring, causing the Seagulls all sorts of headaches down back. Samason had 37 goals to three-quarter time before handing over to Gabriel who shot 15 in the final term. Bree Miller (WD) played a sensational second half for the Doves, while Cara Humbert and Liz Edwards were typically frugal in defence. Tara Smith (WA) and Shona Wells (centre) tried hard to stop the Doves’ flow in the second half. And Hampton Park also gave its percentage a healthy boost, consolidating third spot on the ladder with a 65-32 victory over Pakenham. The Redbacks were super-consistent all day, scoring 17, 15, 17 and 16 goals in each term, with Brooke Kiely (GS) scoring 42 to do the majority of the damage. Natu Fahnana (WA) and Rania Waller (GD) were also outstanding for the winners, who face Beaconsfield in a real season-definer at Holm Park Reserve this Saturday.

Rylee Nelson took control of the Beaconsfield midcourt after half time to lead the Eagles to a hard-fought seven-goal victory over Berwick. 156805 Picture: ROB CAREW Pakenham was never going to win but fought the game out gallantly. Meg Rosser (GA) and Lauren Briggs (GS) doubled their side's output in the second half with the help of Bec Cox (C) and Caitlyn Wright (WD).

 Reviews and news…

Rough roads, no rumble By EWAN KENNEDY WE HAVE spent an excellent week behind the wheel of a Forester tS in our home area in south east Queensland. Some 22 changes are made to the standard Forester XT Premium as it moves along the assembly line. It’s then transported to the STI (Subaru Technica International) highperformance division where a further 28 items are installed. Despite the use of a chequered flag on the tS badge, this Forester is aimed more at the grand touring (GT) market rather than those looking for a track day machine. Other than the standout black grille and deep STI spoiler, body changes are relatively subtle. The suspension has been lowered by 15 mm to improve looks and enhance handling, obviously off-road ability suffers. A new design STI Enkei 19-inch alloys have 245/45 19 Bridgestone tyres. It’s interesting to see that Subaru has gone trendy in using a lower-case initial for the model name. The tS sort of stands for ‘tough Speedy’. The interior features black leather and suede trim seats with red stitched accents. The front seats have STI embroidered badges. The leather trimmed steering wheel also has an STI logo. Unlike the Forester XT Premium on which it is based the tS doesn’t have a sunroof.

Model range Forester tS Special Edition 2.0-litre fivedoor wagon: $54,990 (CVT).

A major restyle of the Forester XT Premium, the Forester tS Special Edition sits lower and rides on STI Enkei 19-inch alloys. Forester tS Special Edition is powered by a warmed-up turbo-petrol 2.0-litre boxer engine producing 177 kW at 5600 rpm. Torque is 350 Nm. All Australian Forester tS Special Editions use Subaru’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) with manual overrides. No six-speed manual transmissions will be imported, though there has to be the possibility of some grey imports

being sneaked in somewhere down the track. Given Subaru Australia’s long-term emphasis on safety it comes as no surprise that the Forester XT range has been given a five-star rating by ANCAP. Our on-road driving of the Forester tS was done on one of our favourite road programs in the hinterland behind the Gold Coast.

With bumps, cracked surfaces and broken edges it’s similar to many country roads in the coastal regions of Australia. Despite everything the roads through at the tS is breezed through the tests. Forester tS has handling that’s competent for a tuned SUV, though you wouldn’t call it a sports wagon. It has precise turn-in and good feedback through the steering wheel.

Brembo brakes, four-pot front and two-pot rear have immense stopping power. The 45 per cent profile looks good and doesn’t destroy ride comfort the way lower-profile tyres can do. As a result comfort is pretty good. The front seats support well, the rear seat has plenty of legroom and four adults can all ride in stretch out comfort. There’s space in the rear for three kids up to their early-teen years. Three colours are imported, WR Blue, White and Black. Ours was a black one and we suspect the WR Blues have already been snapped up on pre-orders. Only 300 Forester tS Special Editions were allocated to Australia and they are running out fast.
