As the State Member for Geelong I am very proud of our great city. There is a real confidence growing in our community from all sectors, generating a positive approach for the future of Geelong. The Andrews government’s recent announcement of an extensive consultation process for the future structure and governance of the City of Greater Geelong has had a very positive response. We will see stakeholder and community consultations and a citizens jury of 100 Geelong residents to help determine the best structure for our council. By the end of 2016 the outcomes of the recommendations will be reported to the minister and the community. The Andrews Government’s commitment to Geelong has been unprecedented with the commitment to education and the commitment to the
redevelopment of GPAC, Simonds Stadium, the Worksafe relocation and revitalising our CBD. The recent launch of the Connecting Regional Victoria - The Regional Network Development Plan, outlines our commitment to public transport in Geelong. The Geelong train line has seen an extra 200,000 people every month travelling between Geelong and Southern Cross Station since the opening of the Regional Rail Link. The plan will set out priorities for regional public transport services, infrastructure and investment over the next 20 years. It is important that we create jobs in Geelong, and we are doing that. Employment in the Geelong region has increased, up seven per cent compared with three months ago and is up 15.6 per cent as compared to 12 months ago. It is an exciting time for Geelong and I look forward to working with the community and our leaders to ensure this community achieves the best possible outcomes.
Small business innovation is one of the key drivers of Geelong’s economy as the city moves away from its manufacturing roots. Enterprise Geelong, City of Greater Geelong’s dedicated resource for economic development initiatives, offers a point of entry for businesses seeking to grow or invest locally, through positive leadership, collaboration and innovation. The last year has seen Geelong’s small business count grow to 16,000 and small to medium enterprises now make up 95 per cent of the city’s total business count. Geelong’s small business market is thriving with start-ups like GOOP Digital, a web development company that kicked off in Karl Morris and Amanda Ferry’s lounge room and whose client based ticked over to 700 nation-wide this year. “Our success during the past eight years is an example of what optimism, hard work and Geelong’s supportive business community can achieve,” Mr Morris says. In the past two years alone GOOP Digital has almost doubled its workforce, increasing from eight employees to 14, all working from the Geelong headquarters. “Geelong is the ideal city because we have access to a professional workforce but still retain the benefits of a regional lifestyle,” Ms Ferry says.
High-tech start-ups like GOOP Digital are helping reinvigorate Geelong.

A city of growth and pride By Dr Kathy Alexander, City of Greater Geelong Council Administrators Chair Geelong is thriving as Victoria’s second-largest city, offering a fantastic lifestyle and amenities. As the region’s population grows by a predicted 100,000 residents by 2020, the City of Greater Geelong will continue to provide high-quality services that will benefit our expanding community. In the last year we’ve opened the doors to some fantastic community facilities, such as the Shell Road Memorial Pavilion, a redeveloped Austin Park and Bellarine’s Sports and Aquatic Centre gym. Our Library and Heritage Centre has been a major addition to the city, and we were proud to deliver what has become a cultural landmark for the region. Geelong continues to invest in expansion projects, including Armstrong Creek and two major growth areas in the region’s western suburbs, which are set to house more than 100,000 residents by 2030 - about half our current population. Our Central Geelong Action Plan, the blueprint for revitalisation of the CBD, is progressing and will ensure we have a 21st Century city centre. Construction will begin soon on stage one of a Green Spine in the commercial heart of the city, turning Malop Street into a beautiful botanic walk. As we work to realise our revitalisation vision, Central Geelong’s vibrancy and amenities have already attracted new development, including a 14-storey Worksafe building at 1 Malop Street, and large-scale plans for 44 Ryrie Street. Geelong faces the challenges of rapid growth, economic change and uncertainty, compounded by technological change and the need to adapt to, and mitigate, climate change.
Tourists are increasingly turning to Geelong as a destination in its own right.
Tourism in focus
Geelong council administrators chair Dr Kathy Alexander. To ensure we can continue to have a great lifestyle we must plan to address these challenges and be unified on a clear set of strategies going forward. As the City’s newly-appointed administrators,
Peter Dorling, Laurinda Gardner and I are excited to collaborate with residents, businesses and community organisations to develop a unified strategic plan for our city, and to continue the journey of reinventing Geelong.
Geelong’s tourism industry has continued to grow in the past 12 months, providing up to $728 million to the local economy annually, according to City of Greater Geelong investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford. Mr Luxford says the nature of a tourist has changed from the traditional camera-around-theneck image. “We’re seeing a lot of growth in international students studying here and being visited by friends and family,” he says. “We also see a lot of opportunity for corporate travellers and business visitation in Geelong. “As a service industry it’s a big part of the future of Geelong and offers a real opportunity to capitalise on the growth and visibility of the region.” Mr Luxford says Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula attract five million visitors annually, with 2.8 million day-trippers and 2.2 million staying a night or longer. “That’s worth about $728 million to our local economy every year, and contributes to 4700 jobs,” he says. “Council invests in an ongoing partnership with the industry-driven organisation Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine to deliver marketing, development and investment programs to grow the visitor economy in the region. “We find visitors often start their journey by discovering and being inspired by the blogs, images and video content on our site visitgeelongbellarine.com.au.”

www.geelongcareers.org.au The IXL Tastic has arguably become an iconic element in modern bathroom design. 1236103-KC29-16
Sampford IXL is a part of the IXL Group, a familyowned company that has been part of Geelong’s history for over 158 years. Operating from headquarters in Geelong, the IXL Group remains a significant provider of local jobs. Sampford IXL was borne out of the merger between two longstanding, premium and family owned Australian companies - Sampford and Staff and IXL Appliances (a division of the IXL Group). The company still benefits from fifth generation involvement of Matt Backwell and Robert Backwell – who are board members. By continuing their proud tradition of local manufacture Sampford IXL continues to offer hands-on trades and apprenticeship training opportunities for youth from the Geelong area, and with their products recognised as industry leaders they look forward to maintaining this role long into the future. Many Australian homes today have an IXL ‘Tastic’ in their bathroom - whether it be a stylish ‘Neo’, or traditional ‘Classic’, ‘Eco’ or ‘Easy Duct’ – it’s a brand that has arguably become an iconic element in modern bathroom design. IXL products are developed by Sampford IXL’s Research and Development (R&D) team, which is also based in Geelong. A big part of the company’s longevity has been a focus on innovative and aesthetic products, that are made from quality materials and components with service back-up. “Sampford IXL’s superior product design, manufacture and durability encourages people to make the decision to buy a quality product. Knowing that it will perform and is a brand that’s been around for a long time is important.”

Pathway through the career market
The Prestige Jayco premises.
Caravans are at home here Prestige Jayco has been part of the fabric of the Geelong community for almost 30 years since the Spence family started its caravan repair business in the late 1980s. John and Joan Spence built their business from the ground up, expanding their centre to include sales and joined with the Jayco brand in 1990. The business has since grown to become a one -stop caravan dealership. Now with a second dealership established in Bendigo and the business under the management of son Tony, Prestige Jayco Geelong is bigger and better than ever. Prestige Jayco Geelong marketing officer Jess
Gregson believes it’s important for a business to have strong local community ties. “Being a family-run business, we have a solid foundation here and assisting the community in various ways is very rewarding as well.” Prestige Jayco Geelong has worked hard to support and strengthen community groups and organisations from sponsorship of local sports clubs to supporting worthwhile local causes. “We have a really good relationship with other local businesses and organisations, and realise the importance of supporting each other whenever possible,” Ms Gregson says. “We all support each other and it has a positive
impact on our business and a positive impact on the community.” Strong relationships with Geelong Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine and Bay FM means Prestige Jayco has a solid business foundation. A recent expansion of community sponsorship has made Geelong Racing Club one of many sports clubs that Prestige Jayco Geelong sponsors and supports. “Prestige Jayco Geelong is there for you wherever your adventure takes you,” Ms Gregson says.
Navigating today’s competitive job market can be challenging, especially in regional towns like Geelong where traditional industries are declining or disappearing altogether. Where do jobseekers find jobs? Where will the future jobs be? What are those jobs like? The Geelong Region LLEN (GRLLEN) has responded by developing Geelong Careers, a website and app that provide jobseekers with free resources to assist them in securing sustainable employment. Having researched where future jobs growth is likely, and where growth is currently occurring, GRLLEN identified and categorised eight trending industries: Careers in Caring (community services and Health); Careers that Move (transport and logistics); Eat, Stay, Tour Careers (tourism and hospitality); ICT Careers (information technology); Careers that Teach (education); Careers that Build (construction); Careers in Food and Fibre (agriculture and agribusiness); and Careers in Advanced Manufacturing. Each of these dedicated sites, together with the main Geelong Careers site, provides jobseekers with: a live job feed of vacancies across the region; the ability to dig deeper into each industry and view stories of local people employed in those sectors; discover what training and qualifications are necessary; and job alerts that email vacancies to jobseekers based on their individual preferences. Local employers can post their jobs for free on the site instead of paying to advertise and have access to around 2000 local jobseekers per month. Geelong Careers is a chance for the region to help itself get back to work by showcasing local jobs, on a local site for the benefit of local jobseekers and employers. The site is at geelongcareers.org.au, with attached Facebook page and a Twitter feed, @GeelongCareers.

Marcus Oldham staff will welcome visitors from across Australia to the campus open day at Waurn Ponds. Visitors will learn about the college’s agriculture, agribusiness and equine management programs as well as a program of scholarships from $5000 to $30,000. They will be escorted on campus tours by current students who chat away about their life at Marcus Oldham. Anyone seeking a career in agriculture, agribusiness or equine management can be assured of the very best education and learning experience at Marcus Oldham. The higher education private institution received the highest ranking in the 2015 National Student Experience Survey published on the Federal Government’s new search engine ‘Quality Indicators for Teaching and Learning’ (QILT). Marcus Oldham’s significantly outscored all 40 Australian universities in the key areas of overall education experience, teaching quality, learner engagement and student support. Principal Dr Simon Livingstone notes: “To achieve the number one position is a particularly satisfying result, not only for current and future students, but for the entire Marcus Oldham community. It demonstrates that when it comes to the learning experience and future success of our students, we mean business”. Specialising in business management, Marcus Oldham offers on-campus degree or diploma courses and off-campus postgraduate studies which lead to a Master of Agribusiness. The qualifications are very transferable, which allows graduates to follow substantial career paths outside of the rural-based industries. Jobs are plentiful and Marcus Oldham graduates are having no problem finding them. Of particular interest to horse enthusiasts is
the one-year diploma of equine management which prepares students for careers in the thoroughbred racing and breeding industry or the equestrian and sport horse industries. The intensive year covers equine science, business management and horse husbandry. Lecture room tuition is complemented with study tours to leading equine operations in Australia and New Zealand, with work experience offered in both countries. The unique course attracts students from New Zealand to Norway, with a strong following in South East Asia. Marcus Oldham’s equine management program has been in operation since 1979 and is like no other on offer in Australia, or for that matter, anywhere in the world. The mix of theoretical teaching and practical application is one of the aspects that the students really appreciate. With connections, both nationally and internationally, students are exposed to the best of the best. Through annual clinics from international riders such as Lucinda Green and Blyth Tait and regular tours to leading industry icons such as Gai Waterhouse, Shane Rose, Stuart Tinney, Arrowfield Stud and Cambridge Stud, Marcus Oldham students are able to form valuable contacts that lead to real employment opportunities. The fact that Marcus Oldham offers a business management focussed equine course enables graduates to develop a suite of skills that allows them to run their own or others’ businesses. It can help them understand how to financially manage goals such as Olympic medals or Group One race wins. Green Energy Solar’s local roadshow will provide plenty of information about saving money through solar power.
Sun-power savings can now be stored Torquay-based Green Energy Options is hitting the road to talk about latest advances in solar power and battery storage technology. The company’s roadshow will give home and business owners opportunities to see products, learn about new technologies and ask questions of experts, with information sessions being held around Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast. “The solar industry is fast moving,” Green Energy Options director Aaron Lewtas says. “Three big things that we’re seeing in the solar industry right now are an upsurge in inquiries about battery storage, a steady increase in the number of businesses installing solar, and a trend to smarter micro-inverter solar systems.” Tesla recently grabbed attention with the launch of of its Powerwall battery for household electric-
ity storage, while Enphase’s new AC battery, with a low starting price of around $2500 and the ability to be retrofitted to existing solar systems, has seen double the expected uptake in pre-orders. With smart businesses looking to reduce overheads through efficiencies, solar has become poplar for cutting electricity costs. The roadshow will also present information on Enphase micro-inverters, offering panel level optimisation, improved system performance, enhanced safety, and greater flexibility for installations and expansions. Green Energy Options’ information sessions will be at Torquay, 7pm to 9pm, on 26 July; Ocean Grove, 28 July; Belmont, 3 August; and Winchelsea, 4 August. More information and RSVPs are available at tiny.cc/geo-solar
Strong basis for confidence here By Elaine Carbines, G21 Chief Executive Officer Geelong and the wider G21 region is thriving on the challenge of shaping a bold new future direction. Natural and man-made resources, entrepreneurial ingenuity and a big dose of enthusiasm are proving a powerful combination. Tourism and other businesses across the G21 region are increasingly benefiting from Avalon Airport, including Jetstar’s affordable fares. Flights linking the region with Sydney, the Gold Coast, Adelaide and Hobart bring visitors and their dollars to the G21 region. They also allow regional businesses to expand their horizons by providing easy access to interstate clients.
The region’s beaches, forests, ranges vineyards and other tourist destinations continue to attract thousands of people, and their spending. Of the 98,000 people working in the G21 region at least 6500 are employed directly by tourism, with many thousands of others indirectly benefiting. It’s a significant and growing sector of the region’s evolving economy, contributing annually more than $1 billion. The Federal Government during the recent election campaign promised to invest $25m in upgrades along the Great Ocean Road, recognising the importance of that asset to local tourism. Geelong and the G21 region’s amazing lifestyle, within easy reach of Melbourne, makes it the fastest growing area in Victoria outside of Melbourne. That growth is being carefully managed
through the G21 Regional Growth Plan and its implementation strategy, to preserve the unique nature of our region. It’s no wonder that organisations such as international manufacturing retailer Cotton On, which values its employees highly, wants to stay Geelong-based. Nor is it surprising that the State Government’s Transport Accident Commission and WorkSafe organisations have chosen to headquarter in Geelong. The Federal Government’s National Disability Insurance Scheme has also recently based its national office in Geelong. An arm of the Australian Bureau of Statistics is now Geelong-based, to be in close to Deakin University expertise. Education, business and government should be allies, and in Geelong they are. Deakin University is driving world-leading developments,
such as in high-tech manufacturing fibres. Spin-off companies such as Carbon Revolution which has been chosen by Ford USA to supply carbon fibre wheels to the new Shelby Mustang GT350R are just the beginning. Deakin is opening amazing new opportunities across fields such artificial intelligence, sports science and numerous other sectors. We have the natural and man-made assets. We have the scientific expertise. We have the entrepreneurial skills. We in the Geelong region are privileged to be contributing to developing a bold new regional economy. Geelong and the G21 region is unlimited in its potential. We are Geelong and the G21 region. Hear us roar.

Thanks guys for everything,“ wrote Sue Mclean. “PS: I’m using them again just to move some big items into another unit.“ John McKew knew from his first contact with Lyn that Geelong Removals “was the right removal company for us“. Kate Munro called the company “absolutely brilliant removalists“. “I’ve used this company twice and will recommend them to everyone. The last time, right before Christmas, was just incredible.“

Barwon Health recently completed the final installation of low dose digital radiography (DR) across all of its Barwon Medical Imaging (BMI) sites. “Barwon Health is now one of the few health services in Australia to deliver a comprehensive high quality and ultra-low radiation DR x-ray and CT imaging service, which is available across all our medical imaging sites for hospital patients and the wider community,” BMI director Associate Professor Andrew Whan says. “These latest upgrades, including CT low radiation dose software, place Barwon Health at the forefront of providing ultra-low radiation medical imaging services, ensuring our patients receive the right diagnosis with significantly less radiation.” DR X-ray benefits include higher image quality, significantly less radiation (up to 50 per cent dose reduction) and a faster, more efficient service for the community. High dependency areas at University Hospital Geelong such as the Intensive Care Unit, Special Care Nursery, Emergency Department and Operating Theatres will all especially benefit from the availability of instant high quality, low dose X-ray images. “With the recent installation of a new low-dose CT at BMI McKellar North Geelong, we now have the flexibility to offer same day CT to the community and encourage the community to contact us to discuss their suitability for same day imaging. Walk-in x-ray services are available at all BMI locations,” BMI operations manager Jeff Umbers says. All Medicare reimbursable imaging is bulkbilled at BMI, providing equitable access to stateof-the art imaging across four locations in the region.

Geelong’s National Wool Museum (NWM) offers a hands-on adventure where visitors are encouraged to touch just about everything on display. The museum’s iconic 1872 bluestone wool-store building holds one of Australia’s cultural treasures, celebrating the role of wool, its related industries and their contribution to Australia’s heritage. “It’s a hands-on cultural destination with a national presence and a local heart,” says a wool museum spokesperson. “You might not think wool is the most glamorous or the most exotic museum object but think again. It is most certainly something almost everybody can relate to – and it’s heaps of fun to touch Wool Museum. and play with, too. That’s what the NWM is all about – hands-on exploring, creating and learning. Learn a traditional craft, put up your feet and listen to the wireless and watch the exclusively designed Manor House Rug rolling off the fully operational 1910 Axminster Jacquard loom – the grandfather of all modern computers and the only one operating in Australia. The relaxed NWM experience is evocative of old-school museums and industry. Visitors are invited to explore the alluring array of the weird and wonderful from Australia’s agricultural past, the NWM collection vaults and various temporary exhibitions and programs. The NWM’s Museum Shop offers locally made art, craft and treats including some of the finest woollens available anywhere in Australia. Anyone wanting to know why Warralily is Victoria’s number one development for land sales only needs to speak to one of its 4000 residents. They will explain that the estate’s relaxed lifestyle, just 10 minutes from the beach, brings together advanced infrastructure like the National Broadband Network and recycled water feeding extensive parklands. Most importantly, they will describe the sense of community and belonging developing from the groups and activities co-ordinated by Warralily’s dedicated community development officer Kylie Pollock. Celebrating its sixth anniversary as Geelong’s largest master-planned community and the leading estate in the Armstrong Creek growth area, Warralily’s best-practice urban design has won numerous awards including UDIA EnviroDevelopment certification, a 2014 Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Sustainable Business Award and most recently Stormwater Victoria’s 2016 Excellence in Integrated Stormwater Design award. Construction of a $100 million first phase of Warralily Village is underway, including a Woolworths supermarket, state primary and special needs schools and a community centre and sports pavilion. At completion Warralily will have an estimated population of 15,000 and a full array of community services including neighbourhood shopping centres, cafes and restaurants, a health and community centre, five schools and sports facilities including football ovals, soccer fields, netball and tennis courts and bowling greens.

So much to see and do on calendar Geelong has an annual events calendar bursting at seams, including exclusive Geelong-only performances, elite sport, concerts attracting internationally-renowned acts and so much more. Why? Because the City of Greater Geelong is seriously in the business of attracting, hosting and supporting events. City of Greater Geelong general manager investment and attraction Brett Luxford says the events industry is now an identified strength for the region’s economic future to see Geelong thrive as a modern, 21st century city. A diverse and engaging events calendar also brings significant social and cultural benefits to the region, he says. “Events have definitely become an intrinsic part of our lifestyle and reputation.
“Eighty per cent of the community outdoor events staged in our region are free to attend, and more than 40 per cent of attendees at outdoor major events are non-local. “We also have about 7000 volunteers support our events in Geelong each year.” Mr Luxford says the City established Events Geelong specifically to connect people with current, relevant events information via social media, a website and print media. “To demonstrate our community’s appetite for events, our Facebook page Events Geelong has a growing audience of 27,500-plus. “We also add events for free onto our website calendar via eventsgeelong.com.au. “Make sure you like Events Geelong on Facebook and follow the Instagram account to hear about the latest events, special offers and ticket give-aways.”

The Geelong Indy is a finalist for three awards at Australia’s premier annual celebration of community newspapers. The paper is a vying for Best Digital Publishing, Best Special Publication (Geelong Coast Kids magazine) and Best Advertising Feature (We Are Geelong 2015). The Indy is nominated for the equal-most categories of any paper at the Community Newspapers of Australia (CAN) southern-division awards. “We’re rapt with the recognition of our products as market leaders,” Indy managing editor Tony Galpin says. “To be a finalist in three categories of the CNA awards is a rare feat, especially with the breadth of competition from some of the biggest newspaper groups in Australia.” The nominations come as the Indy celebrates its 30th year of publishing in Geelong. The paper will celebrate the anniversary in late October, with staff planning special celebrations. Geelong businesspeople founded the paper in 1986 to break a monopoly in local newspaper advertising. The Thomas family’s Star News Group assumed part ownership in 2003 before taking full control a year later. The Indy has since expanded to include new publications Geelong Coast (GC) magazine and Geelong Coast Kids. Last year Star News Group demonstrated further confidence in the Geelong region when the company bought the Ocean Grove and Drysdale Voice newspapers and newsmagazine Voice on Pako. The Indy and its sister publications are also active in digital media though associated websites and social media accounts. The range of media platforms offers readers and advertisers the region’s most extensive package of local print and digital products.

The TAC’s Joe Calafiore launches the new social insurance strategy.
TAC is aiming to be second to none
Staff with copies of the Geelong Indy and its various sister publications. “We’re extremely proud of our growth with new publications and digital products over the past decade,” Mr Galpin says. “The key to our success has been our strong re-
lationship with the community. We try our hardest to provide our readers and advertisers with the best products possible and they’ve rewarded us with their loyal support.
“We thank the community for its support over the past three decades and look forward to the next 30 years of providing the Geelong region with truly independent local news.”
The Transport Accident Commission has unveiled a bold new plan to lead the world in social insurance from its Geelong headquarters. TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore recently announced a new strategy to restore Victoria’s status as the global leader in road safety and to provide world-leading care for people hurt on the roads. In unveiling the TAC 2020 Strategy, Mr Calafiore said the organisation’s success would be measured by reduced road trauma and improved client outcomes. “It’s about putting the highest possible value on human life and saying we must do everything we can to keep Victorians safe and help those hurt on the roads to get their lives back on track,” Mr Calafiore said. The TAC will benchmark itself against comparable social insurance schemes throughout the world as it works towards its mission to be the world’s leading social insurer. Social insurers are responsible for preventing
injuries, compensating people for injury-related losses and assisting with their rehabilitation. A digital transformation to be delivered under the strategy will result in a faster and easier claims process for people hurt in transport accidents. The TAC will also work to strengthen relationships with the health sector and is already working with trauma hospitals and Ambulance Victoria on initiatives to help its clients recover. “TAC 2020 is an ambitious strategy but Victorians don’t deserve second best, especially when it comes to their safety and their recovery after an accident,” Mr Calafiore said. In addition to road trauma reduction, the TAC 2020 strategy’s success will be assessed on client-focussed health measures including return to work rates and the extent to which clients can achieve set lifestyle objectives. “Victorians have high expectations of the TAC and it is because of our people that I am confident that we will deliver for the community,” Mr Calafiore said.

Geelong businessman Mark Ward brings years of experience to his Mill Markets group. The group’s three massive venues in Geelong, Ballarat and Daylesford offer 12,000 square metres of covered floor space, giving treasure hunters an opportunity to spend hours browsing an eclectic mix of products. The markets offer a fantastic variety of home decor, furniture, records, vintage clothing, books, fine china, glassware, industrial items, jewellery, antiques, Australian pottery, homewares, memorabilia, retro fashions and collectables. “We also have many stalls selling new products and have gift vouchers for those people who have everything,” Mark says. “All goods are from the 1850s right through to the present day.” Mill Markets leases space to hundreds of dealers, allowing small business operators and collec-
tors to showcase their goods without the unaffordable overheads of operating their own shops. “This equates to a wide and diverse range of products, available and open to the public, seven days a week,” Mark says. “Enjoy a wonderful trip down memory lane through hundreds and thousands of items available for purchase at all three locations. With over 500 stall holders over three venues, there’s always something for everyone. “Travel The Amazing Mill Markets ‘Golden Triangle’ and enjoy quality food and coffee at each. All venues open 10am to 6pm seven days a week, excluding Christmas Day. Mark appears on Channel 31’s Antiques with Attitude at 7pm Wednesdays. Mill Markets Geelong is at 114 Bellarine Hwy, Newcomb. Smart app keeps Chris in the loop
Fuso Geelong service manager Brad Till with Chris Linahan showing the new app.
Fuso Geelong, the brand’s leading Australia dealer, has designed and produced an app that allows one of its employees with hearing and speech impediments to perform at his best. Apprentice mechanic Chris Linahan, 19, cannot hear or speak but with the help of the new SMART Check application can now complete vehicle checks and report faults independently and efficiently. The app allows Mr Linahan to communicate with other employees and management staff while also enabling him to relay information directly to customers with messages and photographs. Dealer principal Richard Furnari said the app will help Mr Linahan complete his apprenticeship and enable him to participate equally in the workshop. Having a workplace that has designed an app to help him to complete his work and communicate with the people around him means a lot to Mr Linahan. The app will be available for wider use in September and other businesses will be able to utilise an innovative and dynamic software system. The SMART Check system will allow ablebodied mechanics to move away from conventional paper records in future as well. The innovative and creative way Fuso Geelong solved the difficulty of an employee who had communication barriers has seen it become a finalist in the National Employment Services Award for Excellence in the Innovation in Disability category.
A concept image of Sanctuary.
Villawood helping to shape Geelong Villawood Properties continues to establish itself as the leading developer in the Geelong region with a number of exciting communities on offer for anyone wanting to build their dream home. Villawood’s newest community, Sanctuary, is a 388-lot precinct to be launched in March 2017 and located off Burville’s Road, across the highway from the company’s flagship Armstrong Mt Duneed community. Villawood Properties executive director Rory Costelloe said the new precinct is part of Armstrong but the location of Sanctuary offers, as its name suggests, a quieter and more-secluded lifestyle option. “Sanctuary boasts an enviable position just off the Surf Coast Highway and, within just 15 minutes of seven of Victoria’s best beaches, residents can enjoy the quiet coastal lifestyle they have always dreamed of without the hefty price tag,” Mr Costelloe said. “Residents will also have access to Armstrong’s Waterfront Dining Precinct, Neighbourhood Activities Centre, neighbourhood shopping, sports facilities, parks and more. “The precinct is also located conveniently close to Geelong Lutheran College, while just across the creek there are plans for childcare, a
large mixed-use precinct, a shopping centre and a primary school. “Residents will also be within five kilometres of Geelong’s CBD and also be easily connected to Melbourne via the Geelong Ring Road and Waurn Ponds train station.” Mr Costelloe said anyone who chooses make their home at Sanctuary will also enjoy direct access to the Armstrong Creek from within the precinct. A bike/shared path will run alongside the creek, allowing a leisurely trip from one end of the waterway to the other. A colourful central park with children’s playground, shelter and picnic area will add Villawood’s signature fun factor to Sanctuary, providing a great gathering place and haven for families with kids. With land now selling in stages one and two from just $153,900, construction is expected to commence in August or September. Villawood expects the first lot of titles in March or April 2017. More information on Armstrong is available by phoning Villawood on 1300 710 726 or visiting armstrongmtduneed.com.au.

Simply music to your ears with the earwax removed Ear nurse Mardi O’Leary wants to thank all the people of Geelong and surrounds for supporting her micro-suction earwax clinic over the past year. Just on 12 months ago she opened the doors as a registered nurse specialising in the technique of using micro-suction for ear-cleaning. “This is a professional, water-free and gentle method of cleaning ears, which is also used by ear-specialist doctors,” Mardi explains. “So many people come to us saying they have trouble with their ears and they don’t like the water syringing method. They may have been to see a specialist ear doctor in the past but it isn’t easy to get an appointment. “They’re really happy to find a place with a short waiting time, with gentle nurses, who get the job done professionally without using water. Mardi sees many people referred by their doctor or audiologist as well as clients who find her after hearing recommendations from friends or family. “Lots of people have trouble with blocked ears, including children, adults and hearing-aid wearers,” she says. Mardi has worked for many years at Melbourne Crystal Clear Ear clinics before making the move to open a Geelong branch. A registered nurse, Mardi completed a nationally accredited course in micro-suction and ear hygiene. She has a wealth of knowledge about ear health and can guide clients in the best way to care for their ears. More information and clinic bookings are available at crystalclearclinic.com.au

The clinics help them with a range of issues including foot and leg pain, injury and degenerative conditions like arthritis. With clinics right across Melbourne, Foot and Leg Pain Clinics opened its Geelong clinic at Belmont four years ago. “We used to get a lot of Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula residents coming to our Melbourne clinics for help with their foot and leg concerns so when we had the opportunity to open a clinic in Geelong we jumped at the chance,” says clinic musculoskeletal podiatrist Dr David Kavanagh. “Not only did it save our existing local patients from having to travel to Melbourne, it gave me the opportunity to work in such a beautiful part of the world.” Foot and Leg Pain Clinics is the chosen podiatrist for some of the world’s best athletes, as well as thousands of families across Victoria. “Thanks to the latest medical research and treatments we’ve been able to assist local athletes wanting to return to sport, seniors who’ve suffered for years with arthritis and mobility issues, children with growing pains and others who’ve previously told that surgery and medications are their only options,” Dr Kavanagh says. Businesspeople gather for a recent chamber of commerce After 5 event at Geelong’s new Epworth hospital.
By Bernadette Uzelac, Geelong Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Geelong Chamber of Commerce is the voice of business in the Geelong region. It is one of the largest business groups in Australia with nearly 900 business members ranging from micro-businesses right through to the largest organisations in Geelong such as Deakin University and Barwon Health. Key to the chamber’s mission is strategic advocacy to support business growth and foster economic development within the Geelong region. In Geelong, about 96 per cent of businesses are small to medium sized, so many of the chamber’s programs are designed to support small business growth and provide opportunities for small business operators to connect and expand their reach. This year the chamber expanded its highly successful federally-funded business support program, Small Business Smart Business, to deliver even more low cost services to help regional businesses grow. This popular program now offers a wide range of assistance to small businesses throughout the Greater Geelong region, including the hugely popular business mentoring service. Also this year, the chamber formed an alli-
ance with the Victorian Chamber to provide an expanded range of benefits to chamber members. The alliance means that business issues in Geelong will now benefit from a stronger advocacy voice at both state and federal levels. The chamber has forged many other key partnerships to strengthen its role in business advocacy, including a successful collaboration with Deakin Business School to conduct the Geelong Survey of Business Trends. The survey, conducted annually, provides important data that is used to develop advocacy frameworks and to inform public policy in relation to issues affecting businesses in the Geelong region. Results of this research show that businesses in Geelong are optimistic about the future and implementing plans for growth. The chamber’s signature event is its monthly After 5 business networking event for members, with over 300 members gathering each month to network and socialise. The chamber is also widely known for delivering the annual Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Awards. Now in their 31st year, the business awards each year recognise and celebrate outstanding local businesses, culminating in a glittering gala awards dinner in August.

It is increasingly clear to people both within and outside the Geelong community that Victoria’s second city has shifted gears. Attitudes in Geelong are progressively positive and the commentary about Geelong’s transformation is not hearsay or rumour - it is real, vibrant and it is growing. Over the past few years, the Committee for Geelong has been researching second cities and advocating for the development of a specific policy and shared vision to transform Geelong. We believe cities that are not state capitals need to be considered strategically within future policy parameters and decisions. These cities play a more significant role when compared to other regional cities and townships, and therefore should be treated differently in terms of funding and policies. With no intention of replicating what already exists, our research is specific to urban Geelong
and complements other strategic work such as the Geelong Region Plan, G21 Regional Growth Plan, Central Geelong Action Plan and many of the more localised strategies. The committee supports the City of Greater Geelong in its development of a new shared longterm strategic vision for Geelong. Through this, there is an opportunity for our city to lead the way nationally and provide strategic and policy directions on the future planning, funding and governance arrangements for second cities across Australia. Geelong’s emerging economic and strategic strengths include being a corporate and government headquarters hub; a knowledge, innovation and research centre of excellence; a health and allied services hub; a transport and logistics hub; and a lifestyle and tourism destination. The Committee for Geelong remains dedicated to supporting the long-term growth and prosperity of our region, and we look forward to Geelong strengthening its position as Victoria’s second largest city.

Brush company cleans up market By John Van Klaveren One Geelong company is flying the flag for manufacturing despite the sector’s recent closures and downturns across the city. The family-owned Geelong Brush Company has large contracts with leading retailers like Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and Bunnings – and its products are made locally. The family’s commitment to local manufacturing is evidenced by the investment Geelong Brush Company has made in taking advantage of world’s best practice technology and production processes. It stands as the last bastion of local manufacturing capability for many brushware product lines in the Australian marketplace. General manager Ross Durran says people will buy products that are Australian made. “We have been part of the Australian made campaign for years,” Ross explains. “We derive great satisfaction in making our products locally because we realise we need to value add to create wealth for the country. We can’t just be services based. “Anyway I just like the idea of making it here.” The commitment to local manufacture extends to using local suppliers as well, like JT Dixon for its packing cartons and Viva’s Geelong refinery for the plastics used in many of the lines. Even the brush filaments come from close by, with a Ballarat company suppling those. With a background as an aerospace engineer, Ross says he enjoys the product development aspect of the business, even though more administrative challenges often arise. “We can turn a product around really quickly. We can do a new product in a week including bar coding,” Ross says. Using skills he developed while working with Boeing and ASTA, Ross has installed state of the art equipment. “The equipment is expensive but it is much more efficient and helps keep costs down so we can continue to manufacture locally,” he says. Despite the innovations Geelong Brush Company retain a number of traditions handed down by founder Victor Durran who started the business in 1936. “We still make a timber brush. Not many manufacturers still make those,” Ross points out. The business has recently inked a new deal with expanding German supermarket chain Aldi, which has ordered four different lines totalling 120,000 units. While some components are imported, the products are all made onsite at Geelong Brush Company’s Leather St, Breakwater factory. “These days we have to be strategic to meet the retail challenges. The large corporate players are squeezing all the time. “That’s why we are constantly updating and improving our product range and we continue to invest in the latest technologies and manufacturing facilities in Australia. “We now have a modern and vers tile plant that enables large orders to be d livered within very short lead times, at a price and volume which cannot be rivalled by our domestic and international competitors. “Many of our locally made products are the best sellers across the country, even in the face of increasing competition through imports.”

Four men allegedly car-jacked a pregnant woman before a police chase across the Bellarine Peninsula on Wednesday night. The 30-year-old woman was left unwilling to “participate in any media” after the men allegedly force her off the road, Victoria Police said on Thursday. The group also robbed an elderly man of his vehicle during a home invasion at Queenscliff earlier the same night, police said. Detectives investigated the “series of incidents” on Thursday after finding the woman’s vehicle burntout at Lovely Banks. They believed the men were now on the loose in two other stolen vehicles. The incidents began about 10.30pm when the offenders broke into the man’s Raglan Street house and stole keys to a Volkswagen in

100 on streets as winter cold blankets fundraiser By EMILY ROBINSON An estimated 100 people sleeping rough on Geelong’s streets will benefit from a community fundraiser as cold winter weather blasts the region again this weekend. Proceeds from Blues for Blankets will go to The Road Home, which works with Barwon South West Homelessness Network to provide swags, blankets and hygiene products to people in need. Geelong’s Sleepy Hollow Blues Club has lined a variety of acts to perform voluntarily for the fundraiser at Geelong Trades Hall on Sunday afternoon. The event is particularly timely given the forecasts of a return to cold winter weather and strong winds this weekend. Saturday is set for a maximum of 11C and Sunday 12C, with the wind-chill factor to push temperatures much lower on the streets at night. Blues club event co-ordinator Richard Drew said he had been working closely with Barwon South West Homelessness Network co-ordinator Andrew Edgar to “pull the show together”.
SLEEPING ROUGH: Richard Drew and Andrew Edgar hope to make Blues for Blankets a regular event. “Normally we run a monthly gig but this July we’ve decided to do a fundraiser instead,” Mr Drew said. The organisers hope to emulate the success of Melbourne blues man Greg Dodd who came up with the Blues for Lost Souls event three years ago. The events are getting bigger and better every year - last almost 300 people attended. “We want to build on it year after year and
make this into a regular event,” he said. Mr Drew said acts on the would include Blue Sunday, Brian Fraser Band, Buxom Blues, Derek and the Champs, Kevin Hay, Mud Peas, OM and the Pea, Righteous Desmond, The Billy Tea Bush Band, The Von Robertsons and Wayne Jury. “We’ve tried to get lots of local artists across a spectrum of musical genres. All performers have freely donated their time across the event. “There’ll also be a barbecue running throughout the afternoon with soft drinks provided.” Mr Edgar said homelessness in Geelong was an “increasing problem”. “We’re struggling to locate the resources to assist people in a timely manner. “All money and resources raised on Sunday will go straight back into the region.” Mr Edgar described the reaction to Blues for Blankets as “phenomenal”. “It’s been fantastic to see the response from the community.” Blues for Blankets tickets are available at the door or online from trybooking.com/LYTT, with more information available at sleepyhollowbluesclub.org.au.

In Brief Screws success The first day of a campaign to fit one-way number plate safety screws around Geelong was a success, according to police. “Huge public interaction” was a feature of the day at Newcomb to combat local number plate theft, police posted on Facebook.
Strategy meeting About 120 people have attended a first “community engagement meeting” with the three administrators of Geelong’s council, according to their chair. Dr Kathy Alexander said she and her colleagues planned another four meetings after this week’s Portarlington session with the administrators hoping to “engage” up to 30,000 residents on a new “strategic direction” for Geelong.
Man wanted A man who failed to appear in court over drug offences could be on the loose in Geelong, according to Victoria Police. Investigators released an image of 40-year-old Sean Dertilis (pictured), urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Art finalists Thirty-three artists will vie for Geelong’s richest art prize, Geelong Gallery has announced. The gallery released its shortlist for this year’s $30,000 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize after selecting the finalists from 500 entries submitted from around Australia.
Storages rising The region’s water storages have continued climbing sharply after significant rain in the past fortnight, according to official measurements. Barwon Water recorded the storages at 42 per cent capacity on Wednesday despite dryer weather this week delivering four millimetres to the catchment area over the previous seven days.

The saying, ‘A face only a mother could love’, has been applied somewhat artfully, if unpleasantly, in the latest road safety initiative out of Geelong’s TAC head office. The team at Brougham Street this week unveiled ‘Graham’, its concept of the ideal physique for surviving road crashes. And, it’s fair to say, some might prefer to risk the consequences than look like Graham. Sculptor Patricia Piccinini, responsible for Canberra’s notorious Skywhale balloon, constructed the odd-looking chap for the TAC under the guidance of road accident research experts. Consequently, major risk areas were either modified or eliminated from Graham’s artificial body. For example, Graham lacks a neck to avoid breakage but has a bulbous head full of liquid to protect his brain. And let’s not forget the lumpy nipple-like structures running down either side of the chest to protect his lungs - hopefully Graham isn’t a day-at-the-beach kind of guy. TAC boss Joe Calafiore explained that Graham depicted the science of human vulnerability to support Victoria’s new Torwards Zero campaign against road trauma. Graham will go on display at the State Library until 8 August before, er, hitting the road for a regional tour.

Former Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons appears to be gradually returning to public life - in typically forthright fashion. This week’s foray was during a gathering of stakeholders to discuss central Geelong’s rejuvenation, a focus of Dazza’s brief mayoral reign, which ended when the Andrews government sacked the council in April. And apparently he was none too impressed
I WILL SURVIVE: The TAC's Graham, depicting the ideal physique to survive road accidents.
with what he perceived as the slow pace of action, or lack thereof. A source says the colourfully coiffured character, who’s also a CBD business and property owner, ripped into authorities present for allegedly holding back various initiatives. Mabye he’s right, maybe he’s wrong, but it’s clear that you can take the Lyons out of City but you can’t take the city out of the Lyons. An Indy online story this week drew a big response from readers when it revealed the date for the first ferry trial between Portarlington and Docklands. Numerous prospective passengers and others took to Facebook to welcome the trial after almost a decade of lobbying for a ferry service. In this week’s paper the operator appeals for support to guarantee the viability of permanent runs across the bay and back. So now it’s up to locals to make it work.
Double Take recalls the success of Geelong’s use-it-or-lose-it campaign on Jetstar flights at Avalon Airport. Which begs the obvious slogan for the ferry: ‘Cruise It Or Lose It’. Get to it, ferry fans. Also on the Indy’s Facebook page this week was a poignant comment in regard to last week’s story about objectors invoking the legend of a local Aboriginal leader against Telstra’s plans for a phone tower in Western Cemetery. Baa Nip, or King Billy, and six other Aborigines are buried in a tomb at the cemetery, the objectors have argued, but Daniel Hoffman had other rights issues on his mind. “The dead also deserve reasonable phone reception and data rates,” he posted below a link to the story. A grave situation, to be sure.

Hit-run on cop at Leopold road fatality ‘horrifies’ force
Hunt on for teen at Corio

Labor at ‘40-year low in local seat’
POLICE are hunting a young male involved in an allegedly deliberate hit-run on a police officer attending a fatal car accident at Leopold on Tuesday night. The Senior Constable from Corio was cordoning off the crash site on the Bellarine Highway near Brinsmead Lane just after 11pm when the allegedly stolen vehicle struck him, Victoria Police said. The driver, who police believed was in his lateteens, drove through the crash site, leaving the officer with minor injuries to a foot and lower leg. Victoria Police said the teen had stolen the 2000 gold Honda CRV wagon from an address in Lara on 10 July. Police alleged he fled the accident scene before dumping the vehicle on Cuthbertson Road, Corio, at 7.20am on Wednesday. He later appeared on CCTV footage in the area where the car was found before he was seen again walking into a reserve near Cuthberton Road. Police believed the hit-run was deliberate, said Geelong Local Area Commander Acting Inspector Monique Leffanue. “It is absolutely concerning which is why we’re putting all our resources towards it to find out who it is,” she told a media conference outside Geelong Police Station on Wednesday. “I was horrified, absolutely horrified. Obviously member safety is really important to us and we are lucky he (the officer) isn’t hurt more.
“We don’t want our members hurt and we’re very lucky he was able to get out of the way of the car.” The wanted driver had light coloured, shoul-
der-length hair, police said. Investigators have asked anyone with information about the incident to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Labor recorded its worst primary-vote result in Corangamite for almost 40 years at this month’s federal election, according to final counting. Labor candidate Libby Coker lost with 30.75 per cent of the seat’s primary votes, this week’s formal poll declaration revealed. The Corangamite result contrasted with Labor’s higher national result on primaries of 34.9 per cent. The Liberals, who held the seat with MP Sarah Henderson, achieved a 46.2 per cent result. Distribution of preferences lifted Ms Henderson’s result above 53 per cent, indicating she suffered a swing to Labor which was less than the state and federal averages. Ms Henderson, who benefitted from the Andrews government’s dispute with CFA volunteers, celebrated the final result on Wednesday. Her opponent achieved Labor’s worst result for primary votes in Corangamite since 1977, she said. “I am delighted to advise that the Liberal party has won the seat by more than 6000 votes on a two-party preferred vote of 53.14 per cent. “I thank the people of Corangamite for placing their trust in me and commit to continuing to work hard, serving them with determination, integrity and compassion over the next three years.” Labor fared better in the seat of Corio, where frontbencher Richard Marles retained his safe seat with an increased margin after achieving 45.6 per cent of the primary vote.

The driver drove over them and later onto the wrong side of the road before police terminated the pursuit. The offenders then drove toward the woman’s white Nissan SUV, registration 1CM 6HV, at 11.15pm as she drove east on the Bellarine Highway. “The Ocean Grove woman pulled over to the side of the road to avoid the vehicle and four men then forced her from her car,” Victoria Police said. “She was not physically injured during the incident. “The quartet then fled towards Geelong in her Nissan, which was later found burnt out on Valley

A catamaran ferry used by Port Phillip Ferries.
NEWS
Man burnt and skip in flames By Victoria Stone-Meadows
Ferry seeks trial support By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE company running a trial of a new ferry for commuters between Portarlington and Melbourne has urged locals to support the initiative. Passengers will board the first trial ferry on 29 July after almost a decade of lobbying for the service. Port Phillip Ferries said the trial was a “significant step forward in realising the potential to operate a passenger ferry service out of the Bellarine Peninsula on a regular basis”. The trial run will depart Portarlington at 10.30am to arrive in Docklands at midday. The ferry will be a 35-metre EnviroCat catamaran dubbed the Wyndham Explorer. Teh vessel has been ferrying passengers between Werribee
and Docklands for the past month. Fares for the inaugural passenger trip from Portarlington will be $25 return for an adult, $10 for passengers aged 15 to 18 and free for younger children. Bellarine Ferry Group’s John Rae said members were “absoluterly delighted“ the trial was about to begin. “The group is only two of us now, which has been a hard slog, but we have had terrific help and we want to thank Paul Little who has put the ferry on the water and wants to bring ferries to Port Philip Bay.” Mr Rae said he would like to see many more ferries running services on Port Phillip Bay rather than just one making many stops along the peninsulas. “We want many more ferries because the ferry
will only cut down the travel time down when it has one stop. It’s not like a train; ferries need to slow right down to load people on and off and stopping holds it up.” Mr Rae said the establishment of the Portarlington trial was a great opportunity for ferries across Melbourne and the bay. Port Phillip Ferries said the popularity of the trial would determine the viability of operating between Portarlington and Melbourne regularly. “Please show your support and demonstrate that Portarlington wants a ferry and if one is provided that it will be used,” the company read. Company owner Paul Little said last year that the trip could take 40 minutes but speed limits on the Yarra River and bay appear to have lenghtened the anticipated travel time.
An explosion in an industrial skip bin left a man in hospital and frightened Norlane residents on Sunday night. Corio firefighters, police and ambulance units rushed to the incident that left the bin in flames near the corner of Brooks and Lumeah streets just after 7pm. Police said a 50-year-old Geelong man was taken to hospital with superficial burns but was released from the hospital on Monday. He was assisting with investigators with their inquiries, police said. A resident near the blast, who requested to remain anonymous, told the Indy he felt his house shake after the blast. The force of the explosion left him wondering what had happened, he said. “There was a big bang and the house shook a fraction. It really felt like someone had banged into the house.” Many residents left their houses in pyjamas to investigate after hearing the explosion, the man said. Geelong Criminal Investigations Unit Detective Mark Thomas said the cause of the resulting fire was yet to be determined. “The arson chemist is undertaking an examination at scene to determine the cause of the fire but at this stage there appears to be no evidence of explosives,” Det Thomas said. “The contents of the bin was strewn across the nature strip and the front of house but noone else was injured.” Corio Fire Station officer Scott EdmundsWilson said residents had nothing to be concerned about. “It’s nothing of concern for local residents, it was just a bin fire.” Call Geelong CIU or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with information.

MP ‘needs faith’ in Citizens’ Jury Liberal MP Andrew Katos lacks “faith” in the ability of Geelong residents to choose the structure of their next council, according to Victoria’s Local Government Minister. Natalie Hutchins was responding to his attack on the Andrews Government’s Citizens’ Jury as “ridiculous”. Mr Katos told last week’s Geelong Indy he was concerned the jury would be a front to deliver the government’s preferred council model for Geelong. “It is disappointing to hear Mr Katos does not have faith in the ability of the Geelong community to decide how their council should look and work,” Ms Hutchins said. “We want to listen to what the people of Geelong want and the Citizens’ Jury is a great way to do this. “The Liberal party supported consulting with the community on the City of Greater Geelong governance model and now they are criticising us for doing exactly that.” The government announced this week that it had appointed NewDemocracy Foundation to establish the jury with a “representative but random sample” of 100 residents. The jury would consider the number of councillors and ward structure for Geelong’s next council following the Andrews Government’s
sacking of the council’s predecessor in April. The jury would also consider “how” the mayor was elected and whether a deputy was needed, the government said. The jury announcement followed a Victorian Electoral Commission review that recommended a new ward structure and number of councillors earlier this year. Mr Katos questioned why the structure needed another review, saying the only remaining decision was whether to include a deputy mayor. He was concerned the jury would be stacked, directed or both to deliver the government’s preferred council. The government’s announcement also suggested the jury review could remove Geelong’s popular mayoral vote for a return to the “bad old days” of councillors making the decision behind closed doors, he said. NewDemocracy Foundation describes itself as “an independent, non-partisan research organisation aiming to identify improvements to our democratic process”. ABC Radio interviewed foundation founder and chairman Luca Belgiorno-Nettis in 2009, reporting that he wanted NewDemocracy to “work with like-minded people from the political movement GetUp ... especially on the issue of climate change”.

By Victoria Stone-Meadows A YEAR 11 student from Belmont’s Oberon High School will participate in a study tour of Vietnam to learn about and commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Alexander Ivanov is one of 10 students from across the state who will travel to significant Vietnam locations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon and Hanoi. Alexander was selected after completing a project exploring why the Vietnam War stirred controversy. Member for Geelong Christine Couzens congratulated him, saying the skills and experience he would gain on the tour would be invaluable. “Alex is a fine leader among our community with a bright future and I’m thrilled he’s being given this rare opportunity,” she said. “We’re sending a great group of young leaders to Vietnam, who will then be able to come home and share their special experience with their colleagues.” Oberon principal Timothy McMahon said the study tour would be a great opportunity for Alexander for hands-on history lessons. “It’s just a wonderful thing. Alex is a history student and has a keen interest in history, so for him to get this opportunity it’s a wonderful thing.” More than 500 Australian soldiers died during the 13-year war, Australia’s longest military engagement in the 20th Century. The State Government’s latest notion of a 100-person Citizens’ Jury to run things around Geelong (Indy, 15 July) raises concerns. The idea seems to circumvent democratic process, as these people, it seems, will be picked rather than elected. We already have unelected entities like Geelong G21 and Committee for Geelong tapping into government funds and lobbying governments without being mandated via the election process by the people of Geelong. Even more suspect is that Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins was in Geelong recently consulting “stakeholders” like real estate agents, developers and G21 but no mention was made of the people of Geelong. Local ratepayers are the biggest stakeholders as the ones stumping up the money yet they don’t get a mention, as usual. Councillors previously sat on the boards of the above-named entities in conflict-of-interest, doling out funds to themselves and mates but the sacking of councillors has made no difference. My guess is that the minister has already picked the people she wants on the jury. If anyone is under consideration their names should be announced, along with their affiliations, and an election of who might sit on the jury held. I doubt the minister would announce something like this if she had already picked the jury members. The proper process should be for nothing to happen until the ratepayers are properly represented by a newly-elected council. Government by private coterie is not an option. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Compassion for cows In response to Melva Stott (Letters, 15 July), Animal Justice Party representative Andy Meddick would not have stated that milking cows was cruel. He would have explained that the dairy industry and factory farming in general was unacceptably cruel, with cows impregnated their whole lives to produce milk only to have their babies torn away from them at a day old and killed or sold off without even being fed. Then when their productive lives are over, these poor gentle creatures are slaughtered. Perhaps not all dairy farmers use these techniques but money is money and compassion falls by the wayside. Sandra Gangemi Bell Park
Glass of cruelty hard to swallow Melva Stott’s thoughts on cows and milking were wrong and outdated. First, cows are in a cruel cycle of being repeatedly artificially impregnated to produce milk for their calves, not for human consumption. This cycle happens over and over until the cow is spent and sent to slaughter. Second, cows are not “satisfied to get rid of the stuff” and do not line up “voluntarily”. The cow’s cycle sadly means they endure a life of painful mastitis, lameness, liver damage etcetera from being forced to do what nature did not intend. Andy Meddick did not drink Sarah Henderson’s glass of wasted pus and hormones because he is vegan and an animal rights activist doing the right humane thing by the animals, the planet and himself. As for Ms Henderson, she ordered the milk so she should have drunk the glass of cruelty herself. Julie Eadie Grovedale
Vale veal Melva Stott missed the point: the cruelty of dairy is that calves are taken from their mothers for veal. The mothers are known to wallow in pain as their terrified calves are taken. We glorify a baby elephant yet take these gor-
geous babies from their mothers to kill them. That is cruel. Jamie Overend Grovedale
Jobs in crisis, not climate Heather Cousland (Letters, 15 July) claimed we had a “climate emergency” and that 97 per cent of “climate scientists” agreed that climate change events were man-made as a result of burning fossil fuels. She also suggested that mangrove die-off and coral bleaching were attributable to man-made climate change. He claims were speculation unproven by science. James Cook University Professor Norm Duke has stated that mangrove die-off coinciding with Great Barrier Reef coral bleaching is a natural process that has happened before. High temperatures combined with extended dry seasons do great damage. Some mangroves recover but others don’t. The scale of the current impact necessitates a more thorough assessment to better understand both the cause and the wider repercussions. Ms Cousland also advocated replacing fossil fuel-generated electricity with renewables. The South Australia energy market has become volatile and extremely expensive for industries due to heavy investment in renewable energies, mainly wind and solar power. BHP Billiton and Arrium recently warned of shutdowns in the state due to high energy prices and unreliable base-load supply. State Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis has asked for mothballed fossil fuel power stations to be brought on line to bolster SA’s depleted energy supply, fearing an exodus of local businesses. Business SA policy director Anthony Penney stated that, without stability and price competitiveness, manufacturing would cease. Australia has jobs crises, not an imaginary climate change crisis. C02 now .0004, so what? Heather Cousland was concerned that atmospheric CO2 had reached 400 parts per million. So what? Plants die when CO2 is much less than 200ppm, so Earth was starved of it until recently. Thanks to the 400ppm, the planet is greening in places it hasn’t done for ages and harvests have never been higher. Ms Cousland was also worried by a fleeting rise in midsummer temperature. This was the spike in the strong El Niño, which possibly caused the reefbleaching she also mentioned. El Niño, and its reversal, La Niña, are part of a group of oceanic regulators, part of climate’s natural variability, unaffected by humans for thousands of years. They are not connected to CO2 rise. Radiosonde global temperature measurement shows little if any uptrend in the past 18 years. While warmth is flat, CO2 continues its rise. The claim of a “97 per cent consensus of climate scientists“ is a bad joke - just Google ‘The 97% consensus myth’. The 97 per cent has turned out to be .3 per cent. Renewables are incapable of replacing fossil fuel because they lack base-load capacity. Ms Cousland thinks governments aren’t doing enough for her cause but the Federal Government has issued around $13 billion worth of Renewable Energy Certificates for wind turbines. South Australia rushed into the fray with 40 per cent of its electricity generation from the wind but now can’t supply its consumers. What climate “emergency“ does Ms Cousland hope to solve by encouraging this shambles? Tim Saclier Leopold

FINALLY FRIDAY Sarah’s solo show The front-woman of a leading Australian alternative rock band in the late ‘90s and early 2000s returns to Geelong next week for a solo show. Singer Sarah McLeod fronted The Superjesus as it won three ARIA Awards and released the hit Gravity, which reached number 35 on national charts in 2000. She went on to collaborate with a series of other artists around Australia and overseas, which even resulted in a dance track that was number one in eastern Europe for 16 weeks. McLeod returned with The Superjesus last year when it re-formed for a national tour. The ALONE: Sarah McLeod band, which counted in her heyday with The her as its primary Superjesus. songwriter, is due to release a new album this year. McLeod’s promoter pointed out that she was also nominated for a Triple M Frontman/woman of the years against names like Dave Grohl and Jimmy Barnes, “proving that she’s a musical force to be reckoned with”. She was back on the road this month and next for a “series of up-close-and-personal solo shows for her Alone and Unplugged tour, which features acoustic versions of songs from Sarah’s repertoire that have defined her journey so far,” the promoter said. “Recently recorded and only available at the upcoming solo shows, fans will also be able to grab their own copy of Alone and Unplugged, the acoustic album.” McLeod plays Geelong’s Workers Club on 28 July.
Aussie legends, US star booked for Queenscliff
OILLESS: Peter Garrett will play songs from his solo project at November’s Queenscliff Music Festival.
An international blues-rock star and two legends of Australian music will feature at this year’s Queenscliff Music Festival, organisers have announced. American artist Ben Harper will play songs from his first album in eight years, while Paul Kelly and Midnight Oils front-man Peter Garrett are also on the bill. November’s 20th festival would “prove bigger and bolder than ever”, the organisers said. Harper and backing band The Innocent Criminals would play in support of new album Call It What It Is. “Audiences will be among the first to hear new songs from the album live, along with classics such as Burn To Shine, Steal My Kisses and Diamonds On The Inside,” the organisers said. “Legends of the Australian music scene Paul Kelly and Charlie Owen will present songs from an exciting new collaboration that is sure to appease fans who have waited since 2007 for their chance to see Paul Kelly back to grace the QMF stages. “The roll call of local heroes continues with a special appearance from Peter Garrett and The Alter Egos playing songs from Peter’s forthcoming solo album, A Version of Now, featuring an all-star band including Abbe May, Martin Rotsey (Midnight Oil), Mark Wilson (Jet) and Peter Luscombe (Rockwiz, Paul Kelly).” Other acts on the bill included Melbourne pop band Alpine, hip-hop artist Urthboy and bluesman Ash Grunwald, the organisers said. The organisers said four more line-up announcements in coming months would reveal a final bill of more than 80 local and international acts for November’s festival.

Festival shines light on fine art films By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE fifth annual Bellarine Lighthouse Films Winter Program will bring the best fine art films back to the Queenscliff Town Hall – with fresh art films from around the globe. The volunteers of this not-for-profit group have again bought engaging and exciting cinema to the region that is not available anywhere else. From 5 to 7 August, the silver screen at Queenscliff Town Hall will be packed with fascinating and intriguing fine art films with something to suit everyone. This year the opening Friday night feature film is an Australian documentary focusing on a behind the scenes exploration of Calisthenics featuring local dancers Liz and Calista Reed. ‘Graceful Girls’ gives viewers a new perspective of this unique sport, and a Q&A session will be held after the screening with the film’s writer and director Olivia Peniston-Bird. The following Saturday is a smorgasbord of films with three films across the genres of drama,
documentary and fiction following the lives of varied and interesting people. Each film has a more interesting surprise than the last and with all the films coming from different corners of the globe, there is a wealth of stories to indulge in. The final film of the festival is a sequel to the 2012 documentary ‘The Act of Killing’ which details the individual stories of the people who participated in the Indonesian Massacres of 1965 and 1966. ‘The Look of Silence’, also directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, returns to the same subject matter but this time takes a look at the killing from the point of view of the victims. The Bellarine Lighthouse Film Festival offers a rich experience for all movie-goers with an opportunity to dine under the big screen and debrief and discuss the films over lunch. For more information about the festival and to book tickets to this event, the Bellarine Lighthouse Films Winter Program can be found at www.bellarinelighthousefilms.com.au

RSL tops in value Most people think of the RSL only around Anzac Day but a potent reminder of its importance arises daily. The Geelong RSL venue, in Barwon Heads Rd, Belmont, supports the region’s veterans and their families by raising much-needed funds. Although the venue becomes an annual focal point, every day is Anzac Day at the RSL. Manager Chris Bennett says the RSL is also breaking down perceptions it’s a seniors-only venue. While the regular steak night on Tuesdays and parmi-and-pot night on Wednesdays are popular, the venue is much more. As well as a 200-seat main bistro, the RSL has a 110-seat function room with space for 150 at finger-food-style events. “We’re well-suited for private meetings and corporate functions and conferences,” Chris says. “We also have a couple of boardrooms, 16 and eight people apiece, and they’ve been going off. “With our new projectors and tables, we’ve really stepped the game up.” Families think the venue is great with its kids’ playground. Geelong RSL adds to the region’s entertainment mix with a growing number of dinner-andshow events drawing newcomers in droves. “On Thursday we have member’s night where they can win up to $500 in the raffle. You just have to take a ticket as you enter and you’re in it,” Chris says. “On Friday there’s the presidents draw. If you’re in attendance you can win, if not then the prizes jackpot - we’ve had it up to $5000.” The RSL’s $10 social membership offers numerous benefits, such as cheaper meals, drinks, functions and more.

Creedence Clearwater Recycle
SEPT 10
Aug 20 Creedence Clearwater Recycled consists of four extremely talented musicians, who, having cut their teeth in various bands (Country, Blues & Rock), have come together with one major objective in mind. To bring the fantastic music of Creedence Clearwater Revival back to life on stage in front of a live audience where it really belongs played with all the skill, the passion, the power and the dedication it both demands and truly deserves. So, when you experience Creedence Clearwater Recycled live, you are transported back in time (as if at an authentic CCR concert) when legendary songwriting and musicianship were paramount. You can hear and feel the dedication and obvious love they have for this music. Their skilful, highenergy, powered performances respectfully praise the work of John Fogarty, Tom Fogarty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. You’ll find yourself singing along to song after song you thought you’d forgotten, and come away with an even greater appreciation for the music and its creators.

Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

Easy, efficient and expert at parts, repairs for all vehicles Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

Bellarine Strategic Area Health Services Plan: Project newsletter #1 The Department of Health and Human Services has engaged consultants Biruu.Health to develop a Strategic Area-based Health Service Plan for the Bellarine Peninsula. The Plan will consider the health status of the Bellarine population, their current and projected health service use and make a series of recommendations about the future delivery of health services in the local community. The Plan will: • Examine the utilisation, need for, and organisation of primary care, community health, ambulatory acute and subacute services, preventative health care and aged care • Consider the way in which services could be delivered in the future including: community palliative care, outpatient medical treatment, community care and nursing, health promotion, renal dialysis, chemotherapy, community rehabilitation, mental health services, GP clinics and dental services. • Consider access to aged care services including residential and home-based care. This work is being undertaken in response to the recommendations made by KPMG in their report Review of Bellarine Community Health 2015. The consultants will prepare a detailed analysis of available relevant data, consult with current service providers, and engage with local communities across the Peninsula. SPORT Enright set for a match-up record By Victoria Stone-Meadows Solid and stoic Cats half-backman Corey Enright will have the chance to equal a long held club record this Saturday night when Geelong takes on the Crows at Kardinia Park. Enright holds second position for most games played for the club after accumulating 324 matches in the navy and white hoops. The one-club man joined Geelong in 2001 and has been a stalwart defender for the Cats ever since. Ian Nankervis holds the Cats games record for his long stint with the club from 1967 to 1983 when he amassed 325 games. This weekend’s match will also hold importance for new Cats star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield when he faces off against his old club for the second time this season. Geelong had a win over Fremantle last week after appearing at the end of the first quarter to be on the verge of three losses in a row. With Dangerfield kicking four goals and Enright clocking up 30 disposals at 93 per cent efficiency, the Cats made it home for a 17-point victory. Last time Adelaide took on Geelong was in round eight when the Cats came off the better. Steve Motlop and Shane Kersten had a big night out, kicking four and three goals respectively, while Cameron Guthrie and Dangerfield amassed almost 70 disposals between them. But Adelaide is in fine form as the number-two side of the competition and will also play on the back of a winning weekend. Big things are expected from big Cats forward Tom Hawkins after some lacklustre performances in

Geelong has won four of its past five matches against the Crows with an average advantage of 33 points. On a darker note, the Cats this week ruled out Geelong midfielder Cory Gregson for the rest of the season after he suffered a stress fracture in his foot. The 19-year-old reported discomfort over the weekend and scans revealed the issue, the club said. “The scans revealed the stress fracture. Normally the recovery period for an injury like this is eight to 10 weeks, meaning Cory will not be available again in 2016,” Cats general manager of football Steve Hocking said. Gregson has played 29 games and kicked 17 goals since debuting last season.
