He said boys think they only have an anger problem when they explode at their girlfriend for talking to other boys. They think their girlfriends are their property and this attitude is a seed for something worse when they are adults. “It’s best to get to them early,” Mr Nugent said. The screening is at Hallam Senior College on 26 August, 7-10pm followed by a question and answer community panel. that are run through Skype. Women are also helped to build self-esteem, draw boundaries, and learn about the impact of emotional abuse. Mr Nugent, who also works with students at Hallam Senior College, has marshalled year 11s to raise funds for female victims of family violence. He wants to help educate teenage boys to express themselves better when they get angry or are not getting their way. He addresses those boys who call girls their “bitches” or request girls to send nude pictures of themselves before they go out with them - and then treat them like rubbish. 1232157-PB25-16

ically violent but who broke down in tears when they realised what they’re doing to their partners and children. They couldn’t believe they were such manipulative “arseholes”. Mr Nugent describes himself as once a “violent and angry” person, and still “working on it”. When he saw the light back in 1984, he founded Heavy METAL. His weekly men’s and women’s groups “soldier on” without government funding. Attendees come from as far as the western suburbs, one even flew in weekly from Sydney. Until the light globe comes on, a lot of men and women don’t understand what family violence really is, says Hallam-based counsellor David Nugent. There’s a common myth that family violence is just about being a “wife basher” or “smashing up the house”. But it’s also non-physical abuse and manipulation which is often tolerated inside a family home, Mr Nugent said. “There’s a lot of men who know things aren’t right at home and are not sure what to do. “The wife and children are walking on eggshells around the man. “She makes the excuses for his anger that he’s stressed, tired or the kids are annoying. But it just gets worse and worse.” The cycle builds. The son moves back home in his 20s and starts abusing his mother. Or as Mr Nugent puts it: “Little Johnny is just like his father.” Mr Nugent and his Heavy METAL (Men’s Education Towards Anger and Life) group wants “mums and dads” to pack Hallam Senior College theatre next month for a full-feature version of a documentary Call Me Dad. The doco is a rare look inside Mr Nugent’s men’s behaviour change groups and women support groups. It shows more than a few light bulb moments when the men “finally get it”. Sometimes it’s when the man catches themselves during a domestic argument, such as a fight over buying new curtains. Then the man listens to his partner and they discuss the situation. She points out it’s OK for him to go to Bunnings and buy tools. Buying curtains to make the house a bit nicer is what gives her joy. Casey has the most reported family violence in the state, according to police statistics. Mr Nugent hopes the documentary will inspire many men and women to seek help and change. “This is a community problem, and it needs to be solved in the community.” When the doco’s shorter version aired on ABC last year, men from around Australia called Mr Nugent to tell them they could relate to it. These were men who weren’t necessarily phys-

Skids driver off the road

In Brief Aggravated daylight burglary

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A South East Skids driver whose club-registered Commodore did circular donuts next to another drifting car and a spectator inside an illegal street skid bowl was put on an 18-month community corrections order. Nicholas Sturzaker, 23, of Narre Warren South, pleaded guilty to two charges of reckless conduct endangering serious injury at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 July. Sturzaker’s driving was captured in hidden video footage at various South East Skids meets at an industrial estate in Licola Crescent, Dandenong South. In footage shown to the court, Sturzaker’s white VL Commodore spun close to the crowd of up to 400 ringing the skid bowl after midnight on 8 December. Within the copious tyre-smoke, an unknown

male approached within a metre of the car to film the spectacle. At the same location on 30 December, Sturzaker’s car followed another car into the skid bowl, and performed burnouts and donuts in unison for about a minute. He re-entered the bowl a second time and dropped a burnout thick with smoke for about a minute while people were attending a damaged vehicle in the bowl. In the process, his rear tyres blew and sparks flew into the crowd, the court was told. Police intercepted Sturzaker soon after, observing tyre rubber sprayed onto the car’s rear guards, two popped tyres in the boot as well as equipment for changing tyres in the back seat. Sturzaker told the court he had completed a court-ordered safe-driving program after being found guilty of previous dangerous driving and loss of traction offences.

Defence lawyer Nick Power said Sturzaker, who was diagnosed with ADHD and recently used ice, had been “incredibly” affected by the death of a close friend in a car crash. Sturzaker’s car was not forfeited and crushed. Sturzaker had been unable to get the car to police due to it being undriveable. In the meantime, it had been towed away by a local council and was no longer in Sturzaker’s possession, Mr Power said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Sturzaker endangered people’s safety and lives, but avoided jail due to his young age, early guilty plea and his new-found stability at work and home. Sturzaker was convicted and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for 12 months on top of a current demerit-point suspension until April. “He needs to grow up and be off the road a significant period,” Mr Vandersteen said.

Disabled horse riding group pleads for hay bail-out By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

1202687-PB45-15

A Riding for the Disabled group in Doveton is calling for a hay bail-out due to a poor recent growing season. Hay prices have risen unaffordably for the 30-strong volunteer group that coaches and assists riders of all ages at Mynua Farm. As well as feed for its 11 horses, the group also requires more accredited or trainable coaches to help its riders. Its Wednesday riding session has been dropped and its rider waiting list has grown as a consequence. Coach Rick Beeby of Hampton Park has been helping the national association for 15 years. He said he is “always happy on a horse” and started volunteering after a back injury caused him to give up his trucking job. “I was told by doctors that I’d have to change my vocation and I’d never ride again, or I’ll be in a wheelchair. “I told them OK for the first point, but you’re wrong on the second one.” He said the aim of the school was to help riders take the reins independently, if possible. It caters for riders of high needs, one that Mr Beeby remembers was 90 years old. “She’d owned horses all her life and was getting to the end of it. “This was her last wish.” The activity has layers of therapeutic benefit. Physically, the riders build up core strength, balance, co-ordination and motor skills, and emotionally bet the benefits of the joy of horse riding. “You concentrate on the abilities of the riders, not the disabilities. “It’s a really good working atmosphere. We have good people to get along with.” The group, which receives no government support, relies on fundraising and donations. To donate free or cut-price hay, volunteer or become a coach, call Rick Beeby on rdadoveton@ gmail.com or 0425 777 449. RDA Victoria was founded in 1970. The original inspiration for the RDA movement was the Danish dressage rider Elizabeth Hartel. She won a silver medal in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, despite a disability from polio contracted in 1940 forcing her to use a wheelchair.

A woman home alone in her Doveton home heard sounds outside before she heard footsteps in her kitchen. The offender was found rummaging through items in the woman’s bedroom, before fleeing the home through the front door with a laptop and some electrical goods. The aggravated burglary occurred on Tuesday 12 July around 4.30pm on Crimson Drive. Police conducted a doorknock of the street, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Narre Warren police station on 9705 3111. The woman was not injured in the break-in.

Shot in face with speargun A man has been charged after a woman was shot in the face with a speargun in Hallam on 16 July. The 43-year-old victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition after emergency services were called to a house in Cornwall Street just after 11.30pm. The 46-year-old Hallam man was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and appeared in an out-of-sessions court on 17 July. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 20 July.

Car park builder appeal Tenders are open for works to expand Berwick and Hallam railway station car parks. The State Government will fund up to 110 more parking spaces at Berwick station and up to 50 extra spaces at Hallam, plus new lighting, CCTV and signage. Works are expected to begin in early 2017 and to be completed by late next year. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said the project would ensure “local residents face less of a daily scramble to find a park and have more choices about how they get around”.

Mayor welcomes university Casey mayor Sam Aziz has welcomed Federation University Australia’s successful bid to open up at Monash University’s Berwick campus next year, despite backing a rival bidder. Cr Aziz, who had publicly supported a submission from Charles Darwin University, said Casey was “happy to work with any university provided it meets the needs of the region”. “I’m sure Monash University would have gone through an exhaustive process to find the right candidate. “I’m reasonably confident that a university with a more expansive outlook can achieve the things that Casey Council will like to see.” Federation University, which is based in western Victoria and Gippsland, has announced it will offer up to 15 degree courses in business, education, nursing, IT and environmental and veterinary science in Berwick in 2017. When asked about opening a Harvard-like business school, Federation University spokesman Matthew Freeman said its business programs “consistently rate highly”. Lana rides Aero. 157110

Looking Back 100 years ago 29 July1916 Off to War On Sunday, the whole of the staff of the Dandenong post office gathered together to make a presentation and say farewell to Mr Roy Crichton, a member of the staff who has enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces. Mr J D Kinvig, postmaster, congratulated Mr Crichton on the step he had taken and said Mr Crichton was bravely going in a spirit of self-sacrifice to fight for the Empire. He had no doubt that their young friend would act as a true Australian in all circumstances and he trusted would return safe and sound to his old position in the office. He referred to Mr Crichton’s thoroughness as an officer of the department and his courteous demeanour towards the public and his fellow officers.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society After all present had added their eulogiums of their comrade and best wishes for his safe return, Mr Kinvig on behalf of those present presented Mr Crichton with a wristlet watch and hoped it might prove useful and also be a reminder to him of his colleagues. Mr Crichton feelingly replied and said he would do his best in whatever circumstances he was placed.

50 years ago 19 July 1966 Ten O’clock crash picture Ten O’ Clock hotel closing has made little difference to the number of traffic accidents in the Dandenong district, but there has been a dramatic shift in the peak periods for accidents. In the first six months since 1 February, district ambulance records show that there have been 226 calls to accidents.

The figure for the same period in 1965 was 224 - two less. But the change in the times at which the greatest number of accidents happen has been very notable. In 1965 the peak was between 6pm and 7pm with 24 accidents, and the next highest period between 4pm and 5pm with 19. The 1966 figures show two peaks, the first between 7pm and 8pm and the next between 10pm and 11pm, with 25 accidents in each period. This compares with 15 accidents between 7pm and 8pm and 10 between 10pm and 11pm during the first six months of 1965.

Under the influence, speed and using mobile phones while driving were the top offences which placed motorist from suburbs in the Greater Dandenong police service area in the top 20 suburbs of recorded offences in the state.

Legal advice faces tough times SPRINGVALE Monash Legal Service (SMLS) is a community legal centre (CLC) that has been operating in Springvale since 1973 and services clients predominantly residing in the south-east region. CLCs exist to support the most vulnerable people in our communities and promote equitable access to legal assistance. SMLS provides direct client services and education, and undertakes community development projects. SMLS has been privileged to be partnered with the Monash University Law Faculty for more than 40 years, delivering the professional practice program. This is a unique opportunity for law students to put textbook education into practice in a social justice context. Despite this long partnership and ongoing support from the State Government, SMLS is preparing to navigate a reduction in resources as a result of funding cuts announced two years ago by the Federal Government. The cuts to the CLC sector amount to $34.8

million over three years, to take effect on 1 July next year. This level of funding cut will have profound consequences across the sector. SMLS will acutely feel the effects of the funding cuts as about one third of SMLS funding is received from the Federal Government. At this stage it is indicated that funding will be cut on a pro rata basis. Data provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) lists at least two of the local communities that we serve among the most disadvan-

taged in Victoria. The City of Greater Dandenong is recorded as the second most disadvantaged local government area (LGA) in Victoria, and Doveton is recorded as the fourth. SMLS, together with CLCs servicing the south-east and Victoria Legal Commission, have undertaken in-depth analysis of legal needs in the south-east region and have identified significant unmet legal need at current resourcing levels. Cuts will directly impact on our capacity for service delivery. SMLS was recently selected to participate in an 18-month project, which will deliver outcome measurement frameworks to ensure programs and strategic direction are in line with community demands and resources, and maximise access to justice. SMLS appreciates and understands the importance of strategic partnerships to target the needs of the community we serve and maximise resources in the face of funding shortfalls. In addition to the SMLS and Monash Univer-

sity partnership, SMLS has been partnered with South Eastern Centre against Sexual Assault (SECASA) since 1995. The joint specialist legal clinic provides advice, assistance and representation for survivors of sexual assault. Our 20-year partnership with SECASA has informed our practice and the development of SMLS specialist family violence-focused practise areas. New partnerships include an outreach at Dandenong Monash Health Community Hub where clients of Monash Health can access legal services on-site. We have also commenced a duty lawyer service at the Fair Work Commission to address gaps in employee access to appropriate and timely employment law advice. SMLS is very grateful and congratulates the recent announcement by the state Attorney-General and Keysborough MP Martin Pakula to extend funds received last year used to create a family violence duty lawyer service.

Botanic delays hit customers Customers of collapsed Hallam builder Botanic Homes have said they are frustrated by delays and extra costs as they chase insurers and administrator PKF. The company, which is estimated to owe up to $5 million to 250 creditors including customers and tradies, is likely to be liquidated in August. A customer, who doesn’t wish to be named, said the building of their dream home began in March after they bought land in Cloverlea Estate, Chirnside Park, two years ago. In early May, Botanic Homes went into voluntary receivership. She said she was annoyed that despite the builder’s financial woes it still “took our hefty deposit and continued on business as usual”. “It makes me think there is little to no money left to be returned to creditors.” She and her partner tried to reclaim the deposit but said that her insurer would cover ‘storage fees’, minimal rent fees but not the full amount of the build. After legal advice, the “heart-broken” couple opted to sell the land so they weren’t “technically out of pocket”. “Now we watch as a new family eagerly comes and creates a home on land that was supposed to be ours.” The customer said dealing with Botanic Homes’ administrator PKF has been a “huge disappointment, to say the least”. After sending legal letters, she was able to receive the home’s “intellectual property” – the drawings and plans – from PKF without incurring administrative fees of several hundred dollars. “They have tried to suck more money out of all of us at an already compromising time. “They don’t return calls, emails, simple questions.

Now we watch as a new “family eagerly comes and creates a home on land that was supposed to be ours

“I think all of us building with Botanic Homes have hounded PKF staff on a daily basis to get little to no response.” Another anonymous customer said PKF had been holding his home’s intellectual property like a “carrot dangling above our head”. “All we ever wanted was our deposit back and now instead we have had to pay even more money just to get the intellectual property rights to build our original home design.” PKF administrator Jason Stone said for forward-order customers – where works hadn’t yet started and weren’t under a contract – the house plans were “assets of the company”. For 60 contractual customers, there were eight whose homes hadn’t been started and whose plans also belonged to Botanic Homes. “A lot of those customers argued that they had an implied licence. “We don’t want to get caught up in legal stoushes and waste any more of the company’s funds, so we’ve granted a licence to those (eight) customers.” Mr Stone said a “small” fee had been charged for other forms, such as field tests, trade contracts and engineering designs. “It’s for anything that isn’t readily available and we have to spend the time collating. “It wouldn’t be reasonable for me to charge remuneration to other creditors for the time my staff spend putting together these files.”

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

More concrete! There’s been an upward trend at the Bunjil Place site over the last month as pre-cast wall panels are installed, scaffolding is erected and concrete pouring continues. The level one suspended slab of the Library has been poured, and the adjacent Gallery is being prepared for framing. Back-of-house theatre areas (such as the green room) are being established and the auditorium itself is starting to come out of the ground. This will take the longest to build and fit out so it’s great to see progress. Walls of the Studio were the first to be installed and are standing tall as it is gradually surrounded by the other facilities. Visit www.bunjilplace.com.au to see how these different building features will look once complete!

Spotlight on the Studio One of the most exciting features at Bunjil Place will be the Studio; a flexible, multi-purpose, black box environment, equipped to host a variety of performances, events and functions. It will be a versatile space, with tiered retractable seating for up to 200 people as well as quality sound, lighting, staging and exhibition options. The Studio will be able to transform to suit live performances, awards celebrations, trade shows, business functions, special events and more! This dynamic space will be the first of its kind in the City of Casey, with the capability to accommodate an unparalleled, diverse program of activities.

Faith on the air By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Gamini Sonseka is no shock jock. The mild-mannered presenter of a Multi-faith Network hour each Sunday morning on Casey Radio (3SER) says he wants people to learn about different faiths in a non-combative way. Mr Sonseka, a Buddhist and a Sinhalese interpreter from Lynbrook, emphasises several times: “We are not going to debate or criticise the other faiths. “We are not going to convert anyone to any faith or religion”. He is certainly loath to tackle faith-based political debates or hostilities around the war-torn planet. It’s more about tips on how to medicate, and what events are coming up at temples, mosques and churches. Last year, his program received no complaints but many compliments, he says. “We’re just here to educate on a particular faith

through the faith leaders. “We don’t just target an audience of one faith. We can all learn about something about other faiths.” On 7 August, the volunteer-run program celebrates its fifth anniversary. From the start, Mr Sonseka has been in the host chair for an audience of about 2000. It’s delivered as a community service, he says. “We are living in a multicultural and multifaith society. “Therefore we should know cultural and faith groups’ ethics and code of conducts, then we can live in peace and harmony without any barriers and misunderstanding.” Each program, he invites one of his regular copresenters Andrew William (Buddhist), Jim Reiher (Christian), Mehanthie Sivarasa (Hindu), Avatar Singh (Sikh) and Zahid Munawar (Muslim). For the fifth-anniversary special, the five copresenters will all be in the Cranbourne studio. It will be broadcast live on 7 August, 8-9am on 3SER 97.7FM and 3ser.org.au.

A MAN who told police he had been using a cocktail of ice, cannabis and heroin on the day of a high-speed police pursuit through Casey’s suburbs has been denied bail. Brian Kessels, 41, unemployed and staying with various friends in Dandenong and Casey, was an unacceptable risk to the community, police told a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on 19 July. He was accused of a spate of offences since August, including two high-speed police pursuits, thefts of a car, number plates and petrol, and a Narre Warren aggravated burglary. In one of the alleged pursuits, police tried to intercept Kessels and a passenger allegedly driving a Commodore with false number plates on The Fairway in Hampton Park about 2.53pm in early July. Kessels allegedly reversed his car into the police vehicle and was pursued up to 120km/h in a 60 km/h zone as he drove down Pound Road, through a Berwick residential estate and against a red light at around 60 km/h in Beaconsfield. Police abandoned the chase at that stage due to the high danger. Kessels was arrested soon after near the car in a Dan Murphy’s car park in Berwick. In the car was a recently stolen device used for detecting underground fuel tanks. During his police interview, Kessels said he’d used half a gram of meth and half a gram of heroin, as well as cannabis, earlier that day. He was assessed as appearing drug impaired by police, but a blood test wasn’t possible due to his heavy intravenous use, informant Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis of Greater Dandenong CIU told the court. Kessels had an extensive history of drug abuse and crime – including dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, robbery and aggravated burglary priors, she told the court.

want to get back “on Imyjustmedication and I’ll be all right ”

- Brian Kessels

Kessels was also accused of a 150km/h-plus police pursuit in a car with stolen number plates on Monash Freeway, Hallam, on 14 December. He escaped that day due to police abandoning the pursuit due to having to attend a critical family violence incident, Det Sen Const Jarvis said. During the alleged aggravated burglary on 7 February about 1.50am, two children, aged 2 and 4, were asleep inside the home. Kessels had allegedly broken in through a laundry window and was spotted by a male occupant, still awake watching TV inside the master bedroom. The intruder allegedly said he was “Briza” and was there to see someone called “Sal”. The resident grabbed Kessels, dragged him out of the house and pinned him on the ground until police arrived. Kessels claimed he had frequently visited the address to visit a “Sal”, though he conceded the yard looked a bit different to Sal’s house. Kessels told the court he had stable accommodation, had been accepted in a CREDIT bail program and complied with parole in the past. He told the court he needed medical attention for a drug problem and a possible cancer diagnosis. “I just want to get back on my medication and I’ll be all right.” Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said she rejected bail because of Kessels’ prior history and the seriousness of the recent allegations. Kessels will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 August.

Jamie Crock, 21, with his freshly published children’s book.

Nobody knows why the trees in the Crooked Forest in Poland are just that, crooked. But one young entrepreneur is trying to change all that through the help of a children’s book. Jamie Crock, 21, a former Endeavour Hills Maranatha Christian School student wrote a 30page book aimed at all ages from five years old, in just an hour. But he adds, “it did get edited after that”. “I had the book written in a 50-minute conversation with my mum,” Jamie said after he discovered that the reason behind the trees odd shapes is yet to be answered. “I would love for someone to come back to us with the answer one day,” Jamie said. The law student employed the help of school friend, Grace Fraraccio to illustrate the book. But with the printers and binders booked in, after another project fell through, the duo had to hop to it to ensure copies would hit shelves by deadline.

Grace, also a university student studying art, who operates under Dancing Fox Illustrations, brought the inquisitive story to life through water colour paints. It is Grace’s first collaboration on a book. “The story is very whimsical and Jamie wrote it in quite a poetic way, it considers all the different magical possibilities as to why the trees are crooked,” Grace said. “It encourages the reader to connect with an old man who appears throughout the story, so if there was a moral that would be it, to bond with the elderly and ask them about their past and learn from their wisdom. “The book also touches on pondering the mysteries of life.” Jamie will publish the book, in both soft and hard cover, under his own publishing house called TradeWinds Publishing. Keep an eye on www.dancingfoxillustrations. com for instructions on how to buy a copy of the book.

A man has faced court accused of possessing a cache of weapons including sawn-off air rifles as well as drugs at a Hallam factory. Aman Preet Nota was arrested during a three-hour raid by the police’s anti-bikie and crime gang Echo Taskforce of the Wedgewood Road premises’ residential area on 28 August. Police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 July that two of the weapons were respectively found by detectives in a gym bag under a treadmill and on top of a garage barbecue. Elsewhere was an allegedly stolen boltaction pistol found in a wall cavity, 22-magnum ammunition, seven capsicum sprays, five stashes of fireworks, six mobile-phone style Tasers and two flick knives. Inside a box marked Chanel No.5 were several sheets of tablets, the court was told. Other pharmaceutical and illicit pills including Ritalin and ecstasy, and a container of suspicious clear liquid were found throughout the building. Nota, the sole occupier, told police during the raid - after he was cautioned - that he’d owned one of the air rifles since he was 16 years old and forgot it was still there, the court heard. Police told the court the weapon had been stolen in 2014. He allegedly told police during the raid that he’d owned another discovered firearm and ammunition for five years. Police told the court the rifle was stolen in 2013. After the raid, Nota gave a no-comment interview. His lawyer Esan Pilai indicated that Nota was likely to fight the charges, and requested time to hear Nota’s recorded responses during the raid. The case was adjourned until 10 August.

Dandenong Benevolent Society is calling for blankets to warm Greater Dandenong residents who are shivering through winter. “They’re freezing,” manager Margaret Ladner said. “I went to the market and bought some blankets. I can’t really afford to keep doing that.” She’s been with the group for more than 35 years, and still marvels at the community’s ability to give. “When you help somebody, and you see them crying when they come in and they’re smiling when they go out ... that’s what keeps me doing what I do.“ Ms Ladner said that for the first time in 30plus years, the society last year missed out on a $58,000 Federal Government Department of Social Services (DSS) emergency funding grant. She still does her best to provide food vouchers, toys and a variety of other support to about 150 people each week.

“This benevolent society’s been going for 60 years,’ she said. “I’ve got a great bunch of volunteers here. We’ll keep going until there’s nothing left.” Ms Ladner said the society’s support had helped people to stay out of jail and often helped people escape from family violence. She recently arranged for a tennis-mad nineyear-old boy to receive lessons in the sport. He’d previously played in his backyard with an old racquet and ball. “Who knows, he might be an Olympic tennis player,” Ms Ladner said. “They were so rapt. You couldn’t wipe the smile off his face for a week.” Anyone with a blanket to spare can drop it off to the shop. “If they can’t manage, I can send somebody to pick them up,” Ms Ladner said. The Dandenong District Benevolent Society is at 305 Thomas Street, Dandenong, and can be contacted on 9793 3736.

Casey council has refused to bail out a Polish senior citizens activities group in Doveton after its state grant was not renewed. The 13-member group – whose members are aged up to 92 – has stopped meeting for exercise, games, crosswords, singing, art and crafts since its one-off ‘performing arts program’ grant finished at the end of June. A Casey council report on 19 July stated it had not budgeted to provide extra funding to the group to make up for the lost $22,512 Home and Community Care funding. Councillor Rafal Kaplon, who is also on the executive board of Polish Community Council of Victoria, said the council had to be mindful of its own “tight budget” due to rate capping. “It’s unfortunate but ... we have to be responsible and not spend beyond our means.” The club boasts it is one of the most active of the Polish planned activity groups in the region. Cr Kaplon said the group was located close to Endeavour Hills which has one of the greatest concentrations of Polish residents in Melbourne. The council’s Community Care department has made a written offer to “support” the program in partnership with the Polish Community Council of Victoria. It will continue to run a monthly outings program for the group in partnership with the PCCV. Polish Community Care Services manager Bozena Iwanowski said the group could be revived by combining parts of each members’ aged care funding packages. “The Polish Community is now at a peak age of 80-90 years. They really enjoy going to this group and having fun because they are lonely at home.”

Casey mayor Sam Aziz and Cardinia mayor Jodie Owen with the 2016 business award nominees.

Talk of the business world nations on the night. “Through the judging process, it has been very exciting to see the number of entrants, and in some categories, there are up to 19 applicants, so some tough decisions had to be made at this stage,” Cr Owen said. “We believe that one nomination is all it takes to shine a light on an outstanding business.” Unfortunately, all of the nominees from the Home-based Business Award were unable to attend the awards night. Previous winners Kelly Sports were again

nominated for the award, alongside Sam Michelle- Paintings and TravelManagers. A whopping 48 businesses were nominated on the night by the public for the People’s Choice Award as the voting lines remain open. Participants may vote as many times as they like, but only once per business. Voting closes on 12 August. Award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday 16 September.

STRENGTHENING businesses through conversation was the theme on Thursday night 14 July when the Casey Cardinia Business award nominees were announced. Dozens of finalists were applauded at a cocktail function at Monash University, Berwick, and Casey mayor Sam Aziz said it like he saw it. “Tonight is about hearing from each other to strengthen economic viability of the whole region – one of the fastest growing in the state,“ Cr Aziz said.

“We give recognition to those who are excelling in their fields, but also come together to learn from the experiences of one another. “By sharing our stories, of success and obstacles overcome, together we can strengthen the economic viability of the region as a whole.” Cardinia shire mayor Jodie Owen echoed his thoughts, advising business owners to reflect on their systems and improve. Lochaven, Dacland’s first community in Melbourne’s south-east, is exceeding all expectations with the second release of lots sold out as soon as they hit the market on the weekend of 16 July. The 66-hectare site on the corner of Hall and Evans road will become home to about 500 families in Cranbourne West. Lochaven’s first release in June was also a sell-out and savvy buyers were lining up for the second release. Dacland’s managing director John C Dwyer said the new community was proving extremely popular for several reasons. “Lochaven is in a fantastic location and Dacland’s reputation for creating beautiful sought-after places to live clearly appeal. “The new community will include a school, 10 hectares of Dacland’s signature beautifully landscaped green open space, a retirement village, and a Woolworths supermarket.” At the heart of Lochaven is an impressive central park that contours around the area’s existing waterway and opens into a series of smaller, interconnected parks. This is central to developing Lochaven’s truly integrated community because the open space and pathways link all aspects of people’s lives through a natural parkland corridor. “Residents will be able to walk to everything they need for quality living in 21st century Melbourne,” John said. There are many potential buyers now waiting on land at Lochaven so there will be another release in August to meet demand.

Ace B player Mahbooma, centre, takes on opponents Nageena and Mobareka.

Scoring their own goals More players than ever participated in an annual Refugee Week soccer tournament in Keysborough. Thirty-one teams took part in the Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) event at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough on Saturday 9 July. SMRC partnered with City of Greater Dandenong, Monash Health and ERMHA to present the day, now in its fifth year. New arrivals, businesses and organisations fielded teams. Kazeroun Victory won the men’s competition, Ace B took out the women’s division, and United Boys won the youth competition. Spectators said the atmosphere was electric and the competition was fierce. There were also soccer and circus clinics for children.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man and are searching for three others over a string of incidents on Heatherton Road in Springvale on Sunday 17 July. Officers were called to a petrol station about 9.35pm after reports that someone had filled a stolen car with petrol and driven away without paying. Police then received a call that a would-be burglar had been disturbed trying to break into an address a few doors down. When the officers arrived at the address, they were told that someone had stolen a Jeep from a service station further along Heatherton Road. They started searching for the Jeep before hearing it had been involved in a crash on Fairbank Avenue near Westall Road at 9.53pm and that four people had fled the scene. Officers were quickly on scene and arrested a 31-year-old in Balloora Road a short time later.

Kambrya College's principal team: Nalini Naidu, Michael Muscat, Keith Perry and Joanne Wastle.

Class revolution By GEORGIA WESTGARTH Eight years ago Kambrya College was the last school on a parent’s list to send their child - now the revolutionised Berwick school can’t cope with enrolment numbers. Since ‘Revolution School’ aired on ABC TV in May, Kambrya College’s popularity with the nation and Casey families has skyrocketed. Principal Michael Muscat said he was in discussions with the Education Department on ways to cope with enrolment interest. “We are really starting to connect with the community and they have given us a vote of confidence,” Mr Muscat said. “We will grow from 1200 students to 1350 next year.” “We’ll have to bring in some extra accommodation for students, extra classrooms and employ some more teachers,” Mr Muscat said. Enrolment zoning is also under consideration. Despite the series capturing enraged parents,

fights in the playground and a student being busted with marijuana - the students’ triumph won out in the end. The positive feedback for the school, which Mr Muscat said hit “rock bottom” in 2008, had been a wave of excitement for a school. “We weren’t in control of this film series - we didn’t know what the outcome would be, but greatly relieved on the other side now,” he said. “The response has been 95 per cent positive since the series aired.” Mr Muscat said prominent character, Michael who was in the Darrabi class for troubled students, became a sub-school captain during the series and is still reaping the rewards. “Young Michael is moving from strength to strength,” he said. “He was the one actually that really touched the big bad world, he’s got an enormous amount of personal feedback through social media and the vast majority of people congratulated him and wished him well.”

house cleaned! Egypt and Angelina were happy to share their toast with Roads Minister Luke Donnellan who made sure he didn't miss out when he visited Fleetwood Primary School in Narre Warren on Wednesday 20 July to launch its new breakfast program. off with an argument rounded off by a comment that “TV is weird”. It will be interesting to see what story arises. A hapless accused in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court seemed to find new ways to plant evidence on himself. The court was told of when the man was pulled over by police and stepped out of his car. Unbeknown to him, the front of his trousers was plastered with empty plastic drugdeal bags. He was also facing charges of breaching an intervention order protecting his partner - who conceived their newly-born child while the accused was prevented from any sort of contact with her. Another accused made little attempt to hide the proceeds of crime. The woman had allegedly stolen an airconditioner and clothing from a neighbour’s house, but the game was up when the neighbour spotted the woman wearing the stolen clothes down the street.

Things were pretty different at a Casey council meeting on 19 July. Channel 9’s A Current Affair film crew was the first with permission to film a council meeting in years - no doubt attracted by recent rate-capping, secret decisions and resident over-charging controversies. It seemed there was a special effort to show off the new, more transparent council. One agenda item was moved out of closed business to be debated in the open. There was even a rush of hands by councillors to second a motion to allow ACA to film the meeting. Outspoken Mayor Sam Aziz - never short of a word to some members of the gallery - was a notable apology. After the meeting, the ACA crew interviewed Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association member Brendan Browne and former councillor Paul Richardson on the steps of the civic centre. However it got some stern rebuffs from two gallery members. One told them: “I don’t think you report fairly and responsibly.” Another brushed them

SPORT Tough rides for Olympic hopeful By JARROD POTTER

Dandenong table tennis star Heming Hu is off to Rio to feature in his maiden Olympic Games. 156287

Picture: ROB CAREW

Hu’s on the ball to take his place at Rio games By JARROD POTTER Dandenong has a brilliant reason to stay up and watch the Olympic table tennis next month - one of its own has made the grade. Heming Hu, 22, from Dandenong will pack his racquets and head to Rio as part of Australia’s table-tennis team ahead of his maiden Olympic Games. “It’s always been a childhood dream to make the Olympic Games one day and this year there was a lot of stress coming into it but we got there in the end. It was really relieving and it was a dream come true,” Hu said. “To be selected into and make the Olympic team is not an easy task - few get the chance and being able to be there myself and be in that team is a huge accomplishment.

The Lyndale Primary School and Lyndale Secondary College alumnus has gone across the world with table tennis playing through Europe in Swedish and Danish leagues as well as to Glasgow for the last Commonwealth Games. Hu’s overseas form hasn’t been good in recent months but he brought his best to the Australian tryouts. “I won the Australian event and it set me a spot in the team. “In the Oceania trials I came third out of the guys so it put me in a position where I can only play the team event, but in the end I still got there and there’s lots to look forward to. “Lots of ups and downs and had a bit of an up in October last year, but then was in a downtime for a good few months and came into the Olympic qualifying after a huge downtime.

“I played extremely bad for myself in the Finland Open and came back home feeling pretty bad about myself, but the important one was to come and I peaked here for the right one so that was satisfying knowing that I could come through in first.” But for now, he’s got another month until he heads away for the Games and is just head-down with practice making sure he’s prepared for whatever comes his way in Rio. “Nothing but playing the game, practice all day and get ready,” Hu said. “Mine (aim for Rio) is to go out there and take it one match at a time, one point at a time and just play my absolute best - and whatever happens happens.”

Ever since hopping on his first horse on his dad’s former Keysborough property as a three-year-old, Matt Williams has been destined for a life in the saddle at the elite level. Williams, 31, from Tonimbuk, earned his ticket to a third consecutive Olympic Games and capped off a milestone week with a podium result at the $130,000 Tyron (USA) CSI3 Grand Prix. Joining the show jumping team for Rio 2016, Williams is riding high after reaching the peak of the sport with his latest horse Valinski. “I’m very grateful to be selected for a third time, this Olympic selection probably means the most to me as it has taken a lot to get to this point, and the last four years since London have had a lot of ups and downs,” Williams said. “Each Olympics I’ve had different horses, but the most important thing I think is to know how to get your horse to peak at the right time for such a big event. “I only got the ride on Valinski about eight months ago, when I first rode him I immediately had a bond with him but never knew he would be as good as he’s turning out to be. “He’s really risen to all his challenges so far and keeps fighting for me every time I ask for a bit more.” His dad Paul Williams has cultivated his son’s dreams, from the days when they used to compete together, as the younger Williams rose through the ranks before moving to America. “I think it’s like everybody - you have a dream for your kids and the dream for them is to realise their dream,” Paul Williams said. “You’re definitely part of the journey, but it’s a matter of being excited for them, doing as much as you can for them and it’s really good that things like this can happen. “To be able to achieve it every time is unique as you’d say after each Olympics that you have to start again, and I’m very proud of the fact that he’s able to do it in a world that’s pretty tough.”

Sketcher sets his sights on having one last crack at big stage football Whether or not it pays off, Noble Park midfielder Jack Sketcher knew he needed to give the big stage one last, proper crack. Sandringham Dragons’ 2010 Morrish Medalist - awarded to the TAC Cup’s best-and-fairest player - wanted more out of his footy career after stints in the VFL and WAFL before returning to the Bullring to play out of the Eastern Football League. Sketcher, 24, from Noble Park, decided to sign up for season two of ‘The Recruit’, a FOXTEL reality show series designed to find the best player outside of the AFL system and give the winner a chance to join an AFL list. It meant he had to say goodbye to Noble Park Football Club and take the step up, but Sketcher wanted to give his second, and potentially last, chance the best opportunity to succeed. “It was a great opportunity and one that I didn’t make the most of when I was 18 and looking back on it now,” Sketcher said. “Obviously to get that second opportunity is a big thing and looking forward to the show to start. “I suppose after watching season one, it made me think if it’s really worth it and if was I unlucky 38 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 25 July, 2016

or not, but now it’s done and dusted and it’s a great opportunity and looking forward to it to start.” Sketcher was put through the wringer by legendary premiership winning coach Mick Malthouse, as well as assistant coach Ben Dixon and Port Adelaide’s world class fitness guru Darren Burgess as high performance coach. “His (Malthouse) record speaks for itself,” Sketcher said. “Ben Dixon and Burgo too - great people to lead us and definitely learned a lot on the show.” For now, everyone will have to tune in to see if Sketcher became “The Recruit”, but in the meantime he’s plying his craft back in the VFL at Frankston and enjoying his second crack at life in the elite Victorian football system. “Back down at Frankston with a few blokes I’ve previously played with,” Sketcher said. “I know the coaching staff down here and know them pretty well down there too - pretty good to be back in the system, but also missing playing here with the Bulls as well.” The Recruit is a 10-part reality series that starts on FOXTEL’s FOX8 channel on Wednesday from 8.30pm.

Noble Park's Jack Sketcher has made his way onto The Recruit. 138170

Frank is always on hand to help By JARROD POTTER

Martinez joined the Stingrays and hasn’t looked back. He’s gone through his struggles, though. Martinez had a tough life growing up and almost died from ‘meltdown syndrome’ a couple of

By JARROD POTTER The simplest of tributes was given to the late Rahat Khan by his beloved North Dandenong Sharks on Sunday. The Sharks asked all of its South East Juniors football teams - in the under-10s, under-12s and under-14s - to don black armbands on in honour of Khan, 20, from Dandenong who passed away on Tuesday evening after he was shot and killed in Melbourne northern suburb Dallas. North Dandenong cricket team-mate Stefan De Silva described him as an unbelievable talent who supporters couldn’t wait to see head out to the middle - whether in cricket or footy. “First met Rahat and brother Javid Khan when they came to the club - would’ve only been none or 10,” De Silva said. “Raw talent, but he was just like a fish to water when it came to cricket and then same deal with footy - him and (Clay) McCartney, memories of those two playing around at the club - even after juniors and seniors had finished they would hang

Handpicked as the Dandenong Stingrays’ TAC Cup Local Legend, property steward Frank Martinez is the kind of bloke that is desperately needed around a footy club. Martinez has been washing the jumpers, pumping up the footballs and famously takes the Stingrays group on his “light runs” around Lysterfield Lake every so often during pre-season for the last 15 years. He’s the first bloke to step up, roll up his sleeves and get the job done - all in the name of giving countless Stingrays a better shot at the big time. Former Stingray Matthew Boyd, a 25 Western Bulldogs midfielder, returned to the Dandenong Stingrays on Thursday 7 July for a Towards Zero Player Night and announced Martinez was the Stingrays’ Local Legend. “A lot, it means a lot and all that as I didn’t expect anything like that - all I was told was that we were going to have dinner and that was about it, so I was a bit stoked and couldn’t say much on the night,” Martinez said. “This means so much to me because seeing all the young kids coming through to the next level, whether VFL or AFL, and that’s been one thing I’ve really enjoyed and helping them out in the off-season as well. “I never expect anything back in return because if you do, you’ll never be respected.” He'll lend an ear and have a long chat with anyone who comes up to him looking for a bit of support. “Talk to the kids when they’re down and feel bad about how they’re playing as well,” Martinez said. “Pumping them up a bit - you have your guys every year who come and talk to you, they won’t talk to the coaches - but I come and talk to them. “I tell them ‘don’t quote me, but this is what I’d do, this is what I wouldn’t do’, be punctual and how to improve themselves.” After a decorated career as an umpire, after 20plus years and more than 300 Victorian Football Association (VFA) games as a boundary umpire,
