Derelict to Disney FROM THIS‌ TO THIS An artist’s impression of the planned cinema complex on Grant Street, Cranbourne. 157323 Picture: TM Design Group

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IF ALL goes to plan it will be the transformation of the season – from derelict to Disney for Cranbourne’s old heated pool site. The wheels are currently in motion for an independent cinema complex and bar on the Grant Street crown land. Developer Ian Macklin has no concerns about the failed Village Cinema venture at the former Cranbourne shopping centre, saying “Competition doesn’t worry me. Mr Macklin, Director of TM Design Group has already sat down with Casey council officers and has submitted plans for the four-cinema complex, with the backing of the Cranbourne Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management (CRRRCM). “Council officers seemed fairly keen and a cinema is obviously needed in the area and seeing that people are campaigning for one certainly lifted my heart, Mr Macklin said. The heated pool site slowly became Cranbourne’s resident eyesore, when Casey Race opened in 2009 and has struggled to be reinvigorated since.

The site was planned to become a 24hour gym in April last year, but secretary of the CRRRCM Neil Bainbridge told The News: “That deal fell over in April this year, so the site has been vacant for a long period of time. The current plans subject to council, CRRRCM and State Government approval could see blockbuster films hit Cranbourne as soon as this time next year. Mr Macklin said as soon as council gave him the go-ahead, he would start on it “straight away. “I imagine it will be a seven-month build or similar and we’ve already done a scenario that could see 40 employees full-time and part-time, he said. The pool’s structural shell will stay and form the bones of the new complex, which is set to house a cafe and bar. Mr Macklin said two of the four cinemas would be a higher class experience where food would be delivered and would seat 46 people; the other two cinemas were set to seat 90. “I want it to add to the entire precinct along Grant Street and be a place people can go have a burger and a drink and see a movie, he said.

“Ours will be a different offer to the big boys, we won’t be as expensive and our point of difference will be the bar – we will show blockbusters on the day of release. Mr Macklin has almost everything sorted except for a name for the complex and wants Cranbourne schools, community groups and families to help him choose one. “Once we’ve got partway through the planning application we’ll ask for name suggestions from the community, he said. Looking into the future, Mr Macklin can’t rule out more cinemas and even an outdoor theatre. “It is very exciting – the site is a little bit of an eyesore at the moment and we’ll do it all up, he said. The announcement couldn’t come at a better time for a group of passionate locals who heated up their online campaign for a cinema in Cranbourne recently. If you have a name suggestion for the Grant Street cinema and bar complex, email it to dailyeditor@starnewsgroup. com.au.

On the sex register Mr Vandersteen said general deterrence and denunciation must be at the forefront of the sentence. Other factors were the age of the children and gravity of the depicted sexual acts. He said in cases of systematic abuse and exploitation, children were vulnerable because of their age and personal circumstances. “The offending done to them has long lasting effects even as an adult and disrupts their growth from what a normal child or adolescent should have.” The images wouldn’t be produced if there weren’t end-users such as Lancaster, Mr Vandersteen said. Lancaster had no prior offences, and an “unremarkable” childhood

and adult life. He had not sold, distributed or profited from the images. During extensive counselling, Lancaster’s thinking and his reasons for keeping child pornography were challenged, Mr Vandersteen said. Lancaster had as a consequence shown great insight into his offending, its impacts on children and the broader community, the judge found. As part of his two-year supervised community order, Lancaster must perform 400 hours of unpaid work. Lancaster was put on the sex offenders’ registry to regularly report to police for the next eight years. He was referred to undergo a sex offenders’ program and ordered to provide a DNA forensic sample.

Bronze eagles fly the coop By GEORGIA WESTGARTH WHERE are the $10,000 eagle sculptures? In a mysterious case of theft, two bronze eagle sculptures have been chopped down and stolen from Villawood Properties estates in Clyde North and Wollert. Measuring two metres by two metres, the Clyde North eagle located on Berwick-Cranbourne Road was cut down from a tall power pole between 5pm on July 15 and 7am on Wednesday 20 July. Police believe thieves used a chainsaw or a similar tool to cut down the eagle from the pole - but are unsure if the statue came crashing down or was taken in one piece. Narre Warren Detective Rob Clark said the theft would have taken considerable effort and a number of crooks to pull off, including a trailer. “You are not going to be able to fit it in the boot,” Det Clark said. “This is clearly a unique theft. “It’s very distinctive so obviously anyone who sees it would be able to recognise it.” The other eagle was stolen from another Villawood estate at Vearings Road in Wollert between 2pm on 16 July and 8.30am on 17 July. Det Clark said it was not known if the thefts were related.

A HAMPTON Park man has been put on the state’s sex offenders’ register and a two-year corrections order after pleading guilty to knowingly possessing more than 2600 images of child pornography. James Lancaster, 58, had stored the images - including 15 videos on eight of 12 electronic storage devices including computers, memory sticks and a mobile phone seized by police at his home on 12 August. The 2619 images depicted children in sexual activity or in an “indecent manner or context”, according to a charge sheet tendered to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 July. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen

agreed with police estimates that the children were as young as 7 to 9 years old, many about 14-16 years. The raid was sparked when police discovered three images on Lancaster’s email address. Federal police were informed and Dandenong SOCIT executed the search warrant. Lancaster’s lawyer said a random sample of the material showed most of the subjects were “post-pubescent teenagers”. “It’s not at the upper end but in the middle end of the scale.” About 2200 of the images were classified at the lowest category 1, with the rest rated up to category 6, the court was told. About a third of the images were found copied on multiple devices.

Stars shine for a good cause AIR guitar, Disney classics and roof raising ballads had the crowd pumping and the judges in a bicker at the Star Search for a Cause grand final. Co-director of the competition Louise Berkelmans said the celebrity judges were blown away with the talent. “It was very difficult to decide between the performances and they had one very heated discussion over the seniors section,” Ms Berkelmans said. Fourteen aspiring acts performed on Sunday 24 July at Westfield Fountain Gate to a massive crowd of around 500. From 80 audition hopefuls there were just four winners. “All the winners and runnerup got a prize, a trophy and a

gift bag,” Ms Berkelmans said. The prize money was as high as $400 for the 21 and over category and the People’s Choice award went to Frankie Mileto. “Hundreds of people voted for the People’s Choice on the day and we raised $1400 just on votes for the fan favourite,” Ms Berkelmans said. It’s the competition’s eighth year and Ms Berkelmans said it will be back next year with a bang. “We had great feedback from people who didn’t win as well, the atmosphere was fantastic and the level talent was probably the best we’ve seen,” she said. The money raised goes to the Cancer Council and over

eight years the competition has contributed $20,000 to cancer research. them, I came running because I had an incident with them earlier,” she said. “It is a designated off-lead dog park and my husband and I were walking our dogs and one of them on a bike came right through the middle of us and separated us.” The dangerous antics have spread out of the reserve and onto the streets, with break-ins a daily concern. Ms Healand said her home has been targeted twice by thieves. “We’ve had two attempted burglaries that I know of because we were home,” she said.

“I heard someone on the deck and the dogs went nuts, I feel safe with the dogs, don’t know if I would without them, but I have security doors.” Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon brought the hooning problem to council on Tuesday 19 July, with a community safety meeting planned to discuss preventative options. Both Cr Stapledon and Ms Healand would like to see installation of barricades or fencing to stop the hoons once and for all. “The hooning activity is endangering people’s lives,” Cr Stapledon said.

Stolen Nitro bike is back at home By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SOME alleged thieves from Hampton Park know quality, but the long arm of the law has brought Nitro Circus star, Cameron Sinclair’s bike back to him. Three custom-made motorcycles designed for use in Cameron’s aerial performances with global sensation, Nitro Circus, were stolen from his Cranbourne South property in April this year. The crooks jumped onto the roof of Cameron’s shed and cut a hole in it to gain entry. They then escaped on the distinct bikes, worth upwards of $12,000.

More than two months on, one of Cameron’s bikes was allegedly found at a Hampton Park address, after police executed a search warrant on Friday 15 July. Narre Warren Detective Rob Clark said investigators recovered the motorbike along with a number of other items related to a spate of burglaries in the Casey and Greater Dandenong areas. “A 29-year-old Hampton Park man and 24-year-old Hallam man were arrested and charged at the property,” Det Clark said. The pair were bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

HOONS keep ripping through Alder Way reserve and depriving Cranbourne families of the green open space. “They were herding these kids like cattle and they were screaming,” Alder Way resident Tracey Healand said. The problem stretches over at least eight years and worsened after desalination pipes were put in and a fence never replaced. Ms Healand said trailbikes, cars and minibikes use the reserve between Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and the South Gippsland Highway as a bypass to

access adjacent streets, instead of using the made roads. “They cut through and drive the length of the reserve, they do donuts on the weekends and we’ve even had a car explode out there,” she said. “I’m really desensitised to the issue now because its been going on for so long.” At one stage Ms Healand called police every day because of hooning activity and even had a run-in with the culprits. “One of the neighbours kids cross the reserve a lot because their grandparents live on the other side and the motorbikes started herding

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy was fairly confident of his chances of bail after being arrested after fleeing from a stolen car in Cranbourne East. A Children’s Court hearing heard the boy allegedly told police officers “he didn’t care what happens because he’ll get released anyway”. Suffice to say he wasn’t pleased when the magistrate refused to grant him bail partly because of a lack of supports to stop him re-offending. As the boy was led back to the cells, he screamed in frustration. Maybe the word he was looking for was “Doh!”.

MEANWHILE two other accused car thieves had their Children’s Court hearing adjourned because at least one of them refused to get on the bus at their detention facility. The 16-year-old girls had been arrested in an alleged stolen car in Dandenong the day before. They were accused of several offences including aggravated burglary and robbery in Berwick, Dandenong, Lynbrook, Drouin and Longwarry in the past two months. The case was adjourned to the following day.

A MAN gained some notoriety for doing a runner in front of news crews after being sentenced to 14 days’ jail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 July. The man and his police pursuers sprinted from the courthouse, miraculously between moving traffic on Foster Street before the man’s shoes fell off. At the 200-metre mark, he took a fighting stance to the leading police officer, who tackled him to ground until reinforcements arrived. The Kilsyth carpet-layer appeared back in court that day, bearing a large scuff-mark to his temple as well as a greasy stare for his apprehending officer watching on from the gallery. His defence lawyer pointed out that the ADHD-afflicted man struggled to think through situations. If he had paused, he could have contested the jail term for repeated intervention order breaches and been out on appeal bail. Appeal bail was now unlikely since he was a proven “flight risk”, the lawyer conceded. The man was found guilty of escaping from lawful custody and sentenced to a further 31 days’ jail on top of his original term. The forementioned chase created a degree of chatter in the judicial ranks. Shortly afterwards a magistrate asked a police prosecutor why he hadn’t joined in the “running”. The prosecutor gave him a blank look, and motioned that the comment went over his head.

Lack of infrastructure THERE is an ‘urgent’ long overdue concern with the development of ‘Alira Berwick’ around Centre Road Berwick and the infrastructure required. For 10 years I have been an owner occupier in this area and I am totally shocked at the prospect of 800 homes with roughly two motor vehicles to each home (1600) and the lack of infrastructure planned by the responsible bodies. I wish to make it quite clear it is not the development that concerns me, it is the lack of forethought for the infrastructure to go with it! Congestion is a current problem; the addition of these 800 homes and 1600 motor vehicles without proper infrastructure is catastrophic! 1. Homestead/Clyde Roads – congestion; no right turn from Homestead Road (safety reasons). 2. Homestead/Centre Roads – Homestead currently unmade T-intersection into Centre Road. 3. Centre/Clyde Roads – traffic lights; congestion from Centre Road. 4. Centre/Cranbourne-Narre Warren Roads – traffic lights; congestion from Centre Road. 5. Domain/Greaves Road – congestion from Domain Road. 6. Greaves/Cranbourne-Narre Warren Roads – traffic lights: recently upgraded! 7. Bellevue/Centre and Gwendoline/Centre Roads Roundabouts either end of the Berwick Fields Primary School. 8. A WOMAN, wanted on an arrest warrant, made a slightly dopey error as she handed herself at Springvale police station. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that upon her arrest, the woman was found with ice in a syringe and cannabis in her pocket. The woman, who had been on bail at the time for trafficking ice, burglary and cannabis possession, told police she was “clean”. The drugs found on her were supposedly a reminder to her not to use again - an excuse that the magistrate found unconvincing. Taking into account her surrender to police, she was released on bail on strict night curfew and daily reporting conditions. CRIME fuelled by fuel has cops concerned. And they’ve spoken out on Facebook to help stop petrol station car thefts. Casey police have put out a reminder to anyone paying for petrol, to lock their car and keep their keys on them during the short walk to and from the register. The reminder posted on the Eyewatch Facebook page said: “Don’t leave your keys in your car!”

Open doors no show A CURRENT Affair was allowed into the Casey chamber to film the open council meeting on 19 July, as council has come under attack for too many behind closed doors, in camera meetings. Council thought it would be a good idea to show transparency and show council in a good light. But who was missing in action at this council meeting? It was our mayor Sam Aziz - was he in the back room, waiting for a closed door, in camera meeting? Rex Flannery, Narre Warren South.

Just tell us I REFER to Casey Council’s Winter Edition of the CityNews. In the report headed “Planning For The Future: Casey’s 2016-'17 Budget", see page 4, we are told “Significant cost savings measures have been implemented in the budget to ensure that we do not compromise on what residents really want." Well can our mayor, Cr Sam Aziz, please inform us about each of these cost savings? If significant cost savings have been achieved, why can’t we be informed about them and why was this report written anonymously? Was this report written by Casey CEO, Mike Tyler, or was it outsourced to another member of staff? Casey residents and ratepayers are entitled to know what our highly-paid CEO has achieved for the municipality, but, as usual, there is no report by Mike Tyler telling us what he has been doing. Why not? John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Chisholm's poster girl Danielle Kazi-Shedden, from Cranbourne is a keen footballer and shopfitter. 157138 she said, laughing. But the page is no laughing matter, Danielle and Alyssa both want to see a broader acceptance of same sex parenting by the time their son is of school age. “I don’t want other mums to say that they don’t want their child to hang out with my son because he has two mums,” Alyssa said. “I started the Facebook page two weeks ago to give gay parents a place to speak openly about things

without being judged.” The online parenting support page is called ‘The LGBT mums, dads and supporters’. Alyssa and Danielle have also used the page to respond to queries from other lesbian couples about home insemination. The couple were lucky enough to get sperm donated to them and inseminate at home, using a kit bought online from the US. Alyssa is six months pregnant.

Danielle also has an online presence through Instagram. “I made a photo blog to document our journey, it’s called ‘Life with 2 Mums’,” Danielle said. “It’s so we can share our highs and lows throughout the pregnancy and because people were so interested in the process of home insemination,” Danielle said. The pair are as close to being married as possible in Australia and had a commitment ceremony two years ago.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS They both look forward to the day they can go to the registry office and bind that commitment in the eyes of the law. Danielle is currently in the running for the Statewide Community Choice Award at this year’s Victorian Training Awards - up against three males. IF YOU’RE a Casey commuter, you’d know Danielle Kazi-Shedden’s face. She’s the Cranbourne tradie showing up the boys and catching the eyes of passersby in Berwick and Pakenham. She’s Chisholm Institute’s poster girl, for all the right reasons. Danielle, 25, is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She is living proof of the changing face of women in the workforce, on the sporting field and at the altar. A lesbian and soon-to-be mum, Danielle has a shelf dedicated to her trophies. Last year she won Chisholm’s Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year, and was then nominated for a Master Builders’ award. To many people’s surprise Danielle, a shopfitter, keeps beating the boys. “I won the overall Joinery Apprentice of the Year, Metro Apprentice of the Year, and Victorian State Apprentice of the Year. That was last year, in April,” she said. “They were all clapping and being supportive at the awards ceremony but you could tell that when they called out my name everyone was a bit taken aback. “People said to me well done and everything but in that tone that they were really surprised, like I must have been very good to beat all of the boys - I just thought I worked to a winning standard.” Danielle met her wife, Alyssa on the football field - both of them, passionate about AFL, gay rights and starting a family. So much so that Alyssa has started a Facebook page for LGBT parents in the Casey region. “I’ve already got 60 followers,”

Dream home nightmares SEVERAL first-time home owners’ incomplete houses are up to 50 weeks out of contract with a Langwarrinbased building company. Some Pro-struct Property Group houses remain half-built, while others do not have so much as a concrete slab after almost two years of “excuses" and “unexplained delays", clients say. Residents have told the Gazette that the home and land packages were sold to them through Turnkey Homes’ display homes based in Cranbourne East, with no mention of Pro-struct until the signing of the contract. Kieron Donoghue purchased a site in Spearwood Rise, Cranbourne West, and signed his contract in February last year. “Throughout that whole time I’ve been paying a mortgage on that piece of land," Mr Donoghue said. “There were always excuses, like the council or the surveyor was holding them up. It was the same story over and over again for over a year. “I count myself one of the lucky ones because I was able to get out before they started building. I cancelled my contract in June and am now in the process of fighting for my $9800 deposit back. “I hung around at their office last Friday and they told me the money will be paid into my account this week. I don’t believe that for a minute. “It’s quite scary really that they can get away with this. There’s not enough protection for owners." Jenny and Tony Colvin’s Henrietta Avenue site in Officer remains a shell and is yet to enter the ‘fixed’ or ‘completion’ stages of the development. “Our house should have been completed by last August. It is still not

complete and we are 48 weeks out of contract,” Ms Colvin said. “Over the last two years we have made numerous calls to Pro-struct and sent many emails. We have repeatedly asked to speak with the directors but they have not responded. “On the way back from my husband’s father’s funeral, we passed the site and talked to the bricklayers. About 10 minutes later, I had received an invoice for the lock-up stage, so we refused to pay because we knew it hadn’t been completed.” Ms Colvin said Pro-struct had attributed the delays to the late land title having put them behind schedule. “The land was due to be released and settled in May, but wasn’t until September. But all the other houses in our street started popping up. They can’t use that as an excuse. If anything, it gave them four months to get their permits up to date.” The couple lodged a complaint against Pro-struct to Consumer Affairs in July last year, which Ms Colvin said achieved little but bi-weekly email contact with updates that she described as “inconsistent". Berwick resident Bridgett Scott also purchased an Officer-based home and land package through Pro-struct. She is now 49 weeks out of contract. “I’ve been working two jobs to meet both my rent and mortgage payments, working long hours and picking up weekend shifts,” Ms Scott said. “I have two weeks to foreclose on my loan but my 12-month construction loan expired last year. They’ve given me one month’s extension, so I don’t even know what happens after that. “In May this year I was told that my move-in date would be 10 June but that didn’t happen. Nobody bothered to contact me. What if I’d paid for a

Tony and Jenny Colvin with their sparse, incomplete house. moving truck or taken time off work to move in? There’s just no care. “Because I’m renting at the moment, I’m supposed to give a month’s notice. But I can’t trust when Pro-struct tell me the house will be finished. I’m on my own. It’s a single income. If I did give a month’s notice, I’d be homeless.“ Ms Scott said she was aware of about 15 other people who had purchased home and land packages through Turnkey Homes and Prostruct. She said most had cancelled their contracts and she knew of two people

who had, after much perseverance, managed to get their deposits back. The firm’s lawyer Lance Guymer responded on behalf of Pro-struct Property Group’s directors. “We are instructed this (Jenny Colvin’s) project is at fixing stage, our client is waiting for that payment and anticipates completion within approximately six weeks," Mr Guymer said. “Bridget Scott’s home is completed and the occupancy permit is about to be issued, our client expects handover to take place shortly. “Our client Prostruct Property

Drive-by shooting MID YEAR CARAVAN why they are being targeted. After the shooting, an unknown person began knocking on the front door but said nothing, and the residents didn’t respond. Judging by the broken brick work to the front of the house, police believe there may have been two shots fired. Two weeks prior to the shooting, a brick was thrown

at the house, damaging a front window. Police, who were called to the scene immediately after the firearms incident, conducted a search, but no one was found. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police urge anyone with information to come forward and contact Narre Warren police on 9705 3111.

Fresh ideas to let men be men By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Men’s Shed might be right for some, but for those who don’t want to build there’s another group in town. When Spencer Wanklyn from Berwick retired from his career in human resources, he couldn’t just sit around. Instead he started OM:NI (Older Men New Ideas) Men’s Discussion Groups, for the Casey-Cardinia region. “Men tend to bottle things up,” Spencer said. “Women carry their working friendships through to their retirement, but when men leave the workforce some struggle to find meaning and purpose in their life. “They think the meaning of life is their job, but really there is more to life than work and it takes them a while to relax and learn how to enjoy retirement.” The groups which involve morning tea and a fair bit of chatter have been running in Casey for nine years, and the Cranbourne group is after some new members.

Fri 29, Sat 30 & Sun 31 July SAVINGS ON ALL FLOOR STOCK AND NEW ORDERS ON THE ROYAL FLAIR AND VAN CRUISER RANGE

The OM:NI (Older Men New Ideas) Men’s Discussion Groups across Casey and Cardinia are after some new members. “The Cranbourne group runs fortnightly, it has been very successful but due to illness we’ve lost a few men,” Spencer said. Depression is a topic often discussed in the groups and Spencer said debriefing on life before retirement is a great way for men to express themselves. “I think a lot of them are at a loose end at the start of their retirement and we see all sort of problems. “Some members will talk about things that they have

never spoken about before even when they were in the workforce.” Due to the group's extensive reach in Casey Spencer has started one in Pakenham and is hoping to continue to grow the positive ageing message. To get involved in the OM:NI Men’s Discussion Groups or to join the Pakenham or Cranbourne meets call Spencer Wanklyn on 0407 307 889 or Alison on 0419 337 048.

Register or face hefty fines THE City of Casey is cracking down on tattoo, beauty and hairdressing businesses that are not registered. Under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008, all tattoo, hairdressing, beauty and body piercing businesses, including those that operate from a home, must be registered with the council or potentially face hefty penalties. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said it was imperative that all current and prospective health and beauty businesses were registered. “It is in the interest of the public’s health and safety that businesses are registered with council,” Cr Aziz said. “When businesses register, council undertakes an inspection of the premises to ensure they’re adhering to legislative requirements, including that they’re designed to promote good hygiene practices and are us-

ing correct cleaning and sterilisation practices. “Council encourages residents to check if a business is registered before using their services.” Council is currently conducting a blitz on unregistered businesses in the region, the mayor says. “Any business found to be trading unregistered may be issued with an infringement, advised to cease trading immediately and have their equipment seized,” he said. On-the-spot fine for an individual operating an unregistered tattooing, beauty or hairdressing premises is $622 and $1555 for a company. The maximum penalty is $9328 and $46,638 respectively if the business is prosecuted in court. Cr Aziz said unregistered businesses put the health and safety of customers at risk and could result in void business insurance.

Lost Dogs Home hosts big day out for the cats THE Lost Dogs Home’s mobile pet care unit is heading to Cranbourne for its first-ever pop-up cat adoption day. The event will take place on Saturday 30 July from 10am to 4pm at the Lost Dogs Home in Cranbourne West. The mobile pet care unit, MADI (Microchipping, Adoption, Desexing, Information), will house a number of cats and kittens looking for new homes. Adoption fees will be halved on the day, bringing the adoption fee for an adult cat down to $47.50 and a kitten (less than six months old) down to $90. All cats and kittens are desexed, microchipped and

vaccinated, which is included in the adoption fee. “MADI is a fantastic outreach tool, allowing us to get out into the community and make a real impact where it’s needed most,” said Dr David Cunliffe, General Manager, Animal Welfare, at the home. “MADI has been a tremendous success with mobile desexing events. The unit’s versatility means it’s also perfectly suited as a mobile pet adoption centre. “There are currently around 100 cats and kittens up for adoption at the home. We want to help them find loving new families, and show the community why adoption is the best option.”

The cat adoption day will take place on Saturday 30 July from 10am to 4pm at the Lost Dogs Home in Cranbourne West.

Home invasion and foot chase AN alleged Casey crook was caught by police after trying to flee the scene of a car accident, where the offender came off second-best to a power pole. A home was invaded on Sunday 24 July about 3.25am in Cranbourne North, and a set of car keys stolen. Police later observed the stolen car on the South Gippsland Highway in Dandenong South, before the driver lost control and collided with a power pole. He was then pursued by police as he tried to escape the scene. He was arrested and taken to the Cranbourne Police Station and remanded in custody, due to face court.

Sex offences A MAN has been arrested on the Gold Coast following an investigation into a series of alleged historical sexual assaults in Cranbourne between 1965 and 1980. Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives, with assistance from Queensland Police, arrested a 62-year-old man from Carrara in Queensland on Thursday 21 July, about 2pm. The man has been charged with 48 offences, including gross indecency and indecent assault. He was remanded to appear at Southport Magistrates’ Court where an application was to be made to extradite him to Victoria.

A Blind Bight resident told The Cranbourne News that he saw around eight police cars and eight council vans at the property around 11am on Tuesday. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said that the council was in regular contact with Mr Scoble, saying the dogs were being vet-checked and would be cared for until a decision on their future was made. “Council acted as swiftly as it could within the bounds of the law and in the best interests of the dogs,” Cr Aziz said.

An unnamed passenger hangs out of Jack Stacey's Falcon in the skid bowl.

A passenger in Jack Stacey's car high-fives the crowd at the skid bowl. He pressed Stacey’s lawyer on why the accused couldn’t remember “his mate’s” identity. “I’m not asking him to name him, but I want to know who is this friend and why would he put him in that danger. “I think it’s one of the worst acts of driving behaviour in this (operation).” Mr Vandersteen said he

A SOUTH East Skids hoon who performed fast circle burnouts with a passenger half-out the car’s window has been told by a magistrate it’s “one of the worst acts of driving” captured by Operation Regarder police. P-plater Jack Stacey, 21, told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 July that he couldn’t remember the identity of the rear male passenger during the 20-second burnouts - despite the passenger apparently filmed hanging out of the car at two separate meets. The passenger high-fived bystanders as Stacey’s 2012 Falcon exited the skid bowl in Licola Crescent, Dandenong South, about 1.08am on 9 December. At the time there were more than 100 drivers and spectators lining the public road bowl. On viewing covert video, magistrate Jack Vandersteen observed a passenger also hung out of Stacey’s car window during a different South East Skids meet at the same place on 18 December. “It looks like the same person.”

couldn’t recall any of the other 36-plus vehicles caught on Operation Regarder video with an occupant leaning out of a window during burnouts. “The most serious car crash I’ve seen is when someone fell out of a car at 5 km/h.” Stacey’s lawyer said the accused had been “blowing off steam” during a difficult separation with his partner at the time. He since understood the “inherent seriousness” of the offences, the lawyer said. Mr Vandersteen retorted: “Everyone goes through difficult times. Not everyone who goes through a difficult time puts lives at risk. “You can’t just say he was upset and wanted to do a burnout.” Another offender Luke Close - on a suspended jail sentence at the time - had his sentencing adjourned. Due to a migraine, a psychologist was unable to testify on whether Close’s moral culpability was reduced due to a close family bereavement at the time. Both Stacey and Close face sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 August.

TROY SCOBLE may have escaped conviction in court last month on dozens of charges relating to the treatment of 33 dogs - but he hasn’t escaped the Casey Council. The 34-year-old Blind Bight dog owner escaped conviction at a court hearing on Thursday 23 June, but was fined $2500 for keeping dozens of unregistered dogs on illegal short chains. But on Tuesday 26 July Mr Scoble had 29 dogs seized from his property, after he failed to adhere to court orders and register the animals in accordance with the Domestic Animals Act. Four days after his court appearance the dogs remained on his property and warrants executed by the RSPCA, police and veterinarians found the dogs to be healthy. Mr Scoble’s 33 American bulldogs and Staffordshire bull terriers were found hidden on his parents' farm in April by a group of animal activists who installed secret cameras. In court Mr Scoble pleaded guilty to 52 of the 53 charges against him after he failed to comply with council notices. Mr Scoble escaped conviction by Magistrate Pauline Spencer because he had no prior convictions and was of “good character”. He was ordered to reduce the number of dogs on his property to four, or obtain a permit for more dogs within 60 days, which he allegedly did not do. The 53 charges included failing to register the dogs, keeping dogs on a property without a permit and failing to reduce the number of dogs or

Tray trucks scooped up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A 21-YEAR-OLD ice addict has faced court charged using a stolen tray truck in a petrol drive off from a Cranbourne West servo and stealing a trailer and tools from Cranbourne. And an Australia Post vehicle was among other items stolen in raids across Melbourne’s south-east during November and December. Among Jake Anthony Riley’s thefts was a Nissan Patrol stolen – with various tools – while the owner briefly went inside his Moordialloc home to get his lunch. The owner tracked Riley on a GPS device through Langwarrin and then Heritage Springs shopping centre in Pakenham, a court was told on 25 July. He was also intercepted in an $8000 Australia Post vehicle, stolen while a postie made a delivery at a Frankston home.

When stopped by police the same day, Riley said he was on his way to returning the vehicle – though he was heading in the opposite direction, the court was told. The Frankston man said his girlfriend had earlier jumped out of his car without warning and stole the postal vehicle. Riley was also charged with stealing two tray-trucks along with a bevy of tools and equipment in two break-ins at an Officer concrete sleeper business on 2224 November. Among the items were two generators, a petrol pressure washer, air compressor, cordless drivers, an angle grinder, tool box, bench grinder and a red riding top and pants. On the second occasion he drove the tray truck to a Cranbourne West servo and stole $53 of diesel. Riley was arrested after the sleeper business owner spotted the tray truck and called triple zero. Riley also stole a trailer with about

$3000 of power tools parked outside a Cranbourne property. That same morning he pawned off the stolen tools for $300. Riley was also charged with drugdriving after being detected with the drug ‘ice’ in his system. His girlfriend told police at the time that he had been taking her weight-loss tablets. Riley also was charged with damaging a Karingal veterinary hospital’s CCTV cameras by spraying them with black paint. Riley’s lawyer said the accused’s offending occurred while he was addicted to ice, combined with bipolar and anxiety issues. His immediate family had battled serious addiction and mental health issues, the court was told. “He’s had a tough time, a tough family life.” During his four months in prison re-

mand, Riley had completed food safety and OH&S courses, with further courses in English and maths. He had got work in the prison kitchen, and hoped to land a job as a mechanic or in the hospitality industry, the court was told. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted “those jobs (in prison) aren’t given easily to people – they’re given out on trust”. In sentencing, Mr Vandersteen took into account Riley’s full admissions and young age – as well as the accused previously breaching three community orders. Riley was jailed for 14 months, with a four-month non-parole period. Taking in account his remand time, he is immediately eligible for parole. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined $2000. He will next appear at a mention hearing on multiple burglary and theft charges at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court on 10 August.

All set to gobble up graffiti GRAFFITI is set to be eaten up in the City of Casey as the council vows to continue tackling ongoing vandalism. The council recently appointed contractor, Graffiti Eaters, to continue stamp out graffiti as promised. City of Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the council’s extensive graffiti management program worked in three ways: enforcement, eradication and education. “As part of our commitment to eradication, council has a 24hour removal policy when graffiti is reported on council-owned property, or once permission is gained from the property owners,” Cr Aziz said.

“Graffiti vandalism is a criminal offence. It destroys the appearance of property, buildings and neighbourhoods, creates a poor perception of safety and can insight fear.” Cr Aziz said in 2015-'16 the council received almost 3000 reports of graffiti to their 1800 VANDAL hotline and cleaned up 28,905 square metres of graffiti. “Council has fostered a partnership with Victoria Police to identify and apprehend offenders who vandalise our city with graffiti,” he said. “Council also focuses on education, with all Year 5 students

in Casey presented with a free anti-graffiti education program delivered by specialist presenters.” Early this year, Casey council ran the ‘Clean Up Your Act’ campaign, which urged the State Government to take action on the removal of graffiti from its infrastructure. The campaign resulted in a $300,000 commitment in the 2016-'17 State Budget for graffiti removal along the Monash Freeway. For further details on council’s graffiti management program visit www.casey.vic.gov. au/graffiti.

Teenage girls in Cosmas net POLICE arrested two teenage girls in Dandenong in an allegedly stolen car over aggravated burglaries, robberies and thefts. Southern Metropolitan Regional Crime Team investigators made the arrests on Sunday 24 July as part of Operation Cosmas. They charged a 16-yearold Cranbourne North girl with motor vehicle theft, reckless conduct, possessing a drug of dependence, driving in a dangerous manner and unlicensed driving. Police charged a 16-yearold Pakenham girl with motor vehicle theft, aggravated burglary, theft, possessing a drug of dependence and committing offences while on bail. They were both remanded to appear at a children’s court at a later date. The charges relate to offences that took place in Berwick, Dandenong, Lynbrook, Drouin and Longwarry over the past two months. In May, Victoria Police drew together investigators across the state through Operation Cosmas and allocated additional resources to prevent, deter and investigate aggravated burglaries and carjackings. Day and night patrols are being conducted at high-risk locations to prevent offences taking place, and almost 80 arrests have been made.

Assistant Commissioner Graham Whyte said identity theft was more common during tax time because of the large number of people lodging tax returns. “With the amount of personal information being exchanged at tax time, it is a prime opportunity for fraudsters,” Mr Whyte said. “Highly organised crime networks use a range of methods to steal personal information in order to commit refund fraud.” In 2014-15, 32,110 cases of identity theft were reported to the ATO. Of these, 22,200 were reported during the peak processing months from July to November. Over the same period, 677 incidents of identity crime relating to refund fraud were dealt with by the ATO. Mr Whyte said there are a number of ways Australians can protect themselves against identity theft and refund fraud. It can be as easy as putting a padlock on a letter box or ensuring computers have the latest software and security updates. “My number one tip is to protect your tax file number by deleting or destroying any record of it from documents before throwing them away. “When you contact us or submit a form, we use your TFN to identify you. Fraudsters try to steal TFNs and other personal information so that they can

LAND RELEASE AT LOCHAVEN SOLD OUT AGAIN! LOCHAVEN, Dacland’s first community in Melbourne’s south-east, is exceeding all expectations with the second release of lots sold out as soon as they hit the market on the weekend of 16 July. The 66-hectare site on the corner of Hall and Evans road will become home to about 500 families in Cranbourne West. Lochaven’s first release in June was also a sell-out and savvy buyers were lining up for the second release. Dacland’s managing director John C Dwyer said the new community was proving extremely popular for several reasons. “Lochaven is in a fantastic location and Dacland’s reputation for creating beautiful sought-after places to live clearly appeal. “The new community will include a school, 10 hectares of Dacland’s signature beautifully landscaped green open space, a retirement village, and a Woolworths supermarket.” At the heart of Lochaven is an impressive central park that contours around the area’s existing waterway and opens into a series of smaller, interconnected parks. This is central to developing Lochaven’s truly integrated community because the open space and pathways link all aspects of people’s lives through a natural parkland corridor. “Residents will be able to walk to everything they need for quality living in 21st century Melbourne,” John said. There are many potential buyers now waiting on land at Lochaven so there will be another release in August to meet demand.

THE LUCERO RELEASE Due to high demand, Highgrove’s latest stage, The Lucero Release is on sale now. Ofering a range of lots from 388m2 to 522m2, finding the right lot for your new home is easy. With new homes beginning construction each week, Highgrove is one of the fastest growing communities in Clyde North, making it a desirable location for families looking to build their new home in a growing community.

Open minded... O'Bryan leaves the Lions Page 40

Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Sawan’s Rio shuttle By DAVID NAGEL CLOSE your eyes for a minute and imagine the feeling of marching into Rio’s Maracana Olympic Stadium with 80,000 people roaring as the next country is announced - ‘Australia’. Australia’s most successful Olympic track cyclist, Anna Meares, proudly waves our flag with 410 of our country’s finest athletes in tow. It may be a dream for us mortals - but for Narre Warren North’s Sawan Serasinghe it’s a dream that is about to become a reality. Serasinghe is a star in the sport of badminton, a sport he started playing as a five-year-old in Sri Lanka and continued when he moved to Australia at the age of 11. “Most people like cricket in Sri Lanka, but badminton was our family sport; my parents played it, and that’s how I got involved,” said the 22-year-old who will partner Matthew Chau in the Men’s Doubles at the Olympics, part of Australia’s five-strong badminton team. Moving to Melbourne, he progressed steadily through the junior ranks in Victoria before earning selection in several state teams. He was then scouted and asked to join the Australian team and hasn’t looked back ever since. He and Chau were initially competitors at national level, but became partners for the Under 19 Oceania Championships three years ago. The pair has stuck together, combining Chau’s control with Serasinghe’s aggressive mindset to qualify for the greatest sporting event in the world. “We played in the same national teams as juniors, and some thought we had potential, so we got paired together and the rest is history,” the hard-hitting lefthander said. “To qualify for the Olympics we had to be the number one pair

in Australia and Oceania and be ranked in the top 50 in the world. We qualified at number 46, but we’ve had some good results recently and risen to 36 in the world.” The pair took out back-to-back Oceania Championship titles in 2015 and 2016, but Serasinghe understands the learning curve is about to get steeper. “We will be the underdogs, but we’re very young, very fit, and very keen, and we hope to trouble some of the higher-ranked teams with our speed and our pace of play,” he said. “Our style is based on offence, we try to set things up and attack on as many points as we can. If we get a good start, we can hopefully work through the group stages and earn qualification for a quarter final. We’ve played them all before and had good results and anything can happen at the Olympics.” Serasinghe and Chau are training daily at the National Training Centre in Melbourne, and Serasinghe said he owed a lot to the lessons learnt from his coaches, including his club coach from Keysborough Hung Pham and current national head coach Lasse Bundgaard. “I’ve learnt so much from my coaches: Hung Pham has been one of the top Vietnamese players; he pushed me to work hard, and I can’t thank our head coach enough for the work he has put in to help us improve.” He said earning the title of an Olympian was starting to sink in. “It’s starting to hit me slowly, we’ve got our uniforms, we’ve had information sessions with the other athletes and motivational talks, but I don’t think it will really hit me until we get to Rio, settle into the village and walk into that stadium.” Good luck Sawan - we mortals can only imagine. The Rio Olympics begin on Friday 5 August, with the badminton beginning on Thursday 11.

From Sri Lanka to Narre Warren to Brazil, Sawan Serasinghe’s Olympic journey will continue in the Badminton Men’s Doubles in Rio. 157111 Picture: ROB CAREW

Korumburra-Bena’s appeal upheld ... and they’re in

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE West Gippsland Football Netball Competition will now feature 10 clubs in its first season in 2017, with Korumburra-Bena winning its appeal to join the league. Under the original set-up, the league was to feature nine sides with speculation from some circles linking

Tooradin-Dalmore to a potential 10th spot in the seasons to come. Korumburra-Bena was knocked down to size as the cellar dwellers of the Alberton Football Netball League’s seniors last year with a 1-17 record and a percentage of 30.81. They’ve slipped even further this year, with a draw and 15 losses through their first 16 games and a percentage of just 16.61. The Alberton league will now enter 2017 with just seven teams - a scenario AFL Gippsland was aiming to avoid with its senior football review. An AFL Victoria statement on the Korumburra-Bena move, released on Friday, reads: “Having considered all evidence provided, the appeal panel believes that the long-term sustainable future of KBFNC is in the West

Gippsland Football Netball Competition and not the Alberton Football Netball League as outlined in the AFL Gippsland Senior Football Review. “The appeal panel is satisfied the Alberton Football Netball League can be a strong and vibrant competition in its own right, similar to that of other such like competitions across the state.” AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper applauded the process by AFL Gippsland and the thorough and consultative approach in their review of senior football structures in the region. But AFL Gippsland released its own statement, which read: “AFL Gippsland wishes to express disappointment in the AFL Victoria decision to overturn a key aspect of AFL

Gippsland’s Senior Leagues Review Recommendations and uphold Korumburra-Bena Football Netball Club’s appeal to participate in the newly formed West Gippsland Football Netball Competition. “AFL Gippsland devoted a significant amount of time and energy, collecting and analysing relevant data and consulting with clubs and leagues to determine the final recommendations. We believe the review process was conducted thoroughly and in the best interests of football in Gippsland. “AFL Gippsland acknowledges the appeal decision is final and will move forward with the remaining Alberton Football Netball League clubs to ensure they are part of a thriving and sustainable competition into the future.”

In an article in the Gazette back in June, AFL Gippsland region general manager Travis Switzer said the response to the new league had been extremely positive, adding at the time: “The vast majority of anecdotal evidence we have had so far has been about the potential for competitive balance across the region, and there is a real buzz about the new league. “Korumburra-Bena have made no secret of their desire to play in the West Gippsland competition, but the commission felt at this point in time the club was more suited to the Alberton Football Netball League. “We have said from day one that we preferred league structures to be more fluid in terms of their member clubs, so the door remains open for KorumburraBena to move West in the future.”

Stinger! By DAVID NAGEL VFL - ROUND 16 WHEN backed into a corner, a Scorpion can inflict a sting that results in pain that can last for hours. Just ask Sandringham, the recipients of one such sting in the VFL clash at Casey Fields on Sunday. Reeling under its own pain - a one-point loss to Footscray last week in a game that was partly given away and partly stolen - the Casey Scorpions had to allow it to subside first. But luck was taken out of the equation on Sunday, with the Scorpions totally dominant in a 46-point victory over an equally desperate fellow premiership contender. The Scorps were on from the start, Dylan Collis, Tom Bugg and Viv Michie combining with Jack Grimes, Ben Kennedy and Jack Trengrove in a superior midfield combination, taking full advantage of Jake Spencer’s control in the ruck. Spencer has had more tapouts than any ruckman in the competition this season and he started well against Jason Holmes and Lewis Pierce, leading to early goals against the breeze to Dean Terlich and Liam Hulett. Casey dominated possession, and had greater intensity around the ball, but Sandring-

ham’s efficiency saw them take a slender lead to the first break. Scorps youngster Clayton Oliver lost his cool at one stage after his fingers appeared to get close to the mouth of Myke Cook at the bottom of a pack. The resultant 50-metre penalty helped the Zebras take that lead at quarter time. Casey’s ruck dominance was taken away late in the first quarter with Spencer leaving the field through injury and taking no further part in the game. “We should be happy with that, you’ve all taken ownership of what we want to do but now it needs to continue,” coach Justin Plapp told his players at quarter time. The Scorps charge with the wind was initially well held by the Zebras, but a 3.5 to 0.1 quarter - including goals to Grimes and Ben Newton gave the home side a well-deserved 19-point lead at the main break. Sandy rallied midway through the third, with consecutive goals to Cam Shenton and another to Tom Lee, bringing the Zebras to within three points at the 20-minute mark of the term. But Terlich, who kicked a crucial goal into the breeze in the first quarter, backed that up with another at the 22-minute mark to give the Scorps a valuable 7.13 to 7.4 lead at the final

exchange. The Zebras flew the white flag in the final stanza, with Casey’s intensity and a fourgoal breeze leading to 5.7-to0.0 final term. Terlich ended the day with four important goals, while Michie, Kennedy, Bugg and Grimes were super-aggressive around the contest. Declan Keilty was also important, taking over the ruck duties from Spencer after quarter time. The Scorps will look to consolidate their push to host a major semi-final when they travel to Coburg this Saturday. The

Clayton Oliver’s effort summed up Casey Scorpions big win over Sandringham. The Scorps Picture: ROB CAREW were first to the ball in a 46-point victory at Casey Fields. 157134

Seven traits of great mate, Miller By DAVID NAGEL FOR his tribute match - former Tooradin and Pakenham star Beau Miller wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. The Seagulls and Lions -two of his former clubs- battled tooth and nail on Saturday, the Lions falling over the line by six points in a contest

that Miller would have thrived in. The seven traits that Miller’s great mate, current-day Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie, remembered him for were on full display as the two teams showed discipline, mental strength, sacrifice, respect, physical strength, mateship and honesty in a contest

befitting the fallen hero. Miller, just 34, lost a short battle against an aggressive cancer on the morning of Thursday 14 July, leaving behind wife Stephanie and two young boys, Chase, 5, and Tripp, 8 months. Miller’s funeral was held last Friday. Rest in peace, Beau.

to showcase their finals series/ grand final on the best available facilities,” the statement read on. “Our venue has a fantastic playing surface, great facilities, and for the biggest two weeks in the football calendar is sitting vacant. Due to the state of many grounds in the region, we decided to give the option of using the venue. The state of the grounds has been a topic in the area of late and the Pakenham surface is second to none.” It is understood the PFC is disappointed it did not win hosting rights to year’s SEFNL grand final, considering it spent $50,000 on new netball courts, the condition of which was a key reason for not winning the hosting rights last year. A source at the club said the Lions were being pro-active and thorough - not arrogant and money hungry, as the comments of Heinze and Gwynne may suggest. According to the Lions there were two main reasons for the proposal being put forward. “The reluctance of the SEFNL to utilise Toomuc Reserve for other than the second semifinal, and after hearing all the reports of the ground conditions in the Ellinbank League, the Pakenham Football Club decided to offer up Toomuc Valley Reserve to the EDFL,” the club said. “Players in general through the district have voiced their expressions that they would love to play grand finals on Toomuc Reserve.”

A BITTER war of words has erupted - and an even bigger war is brewing - after the Pakenham Football Club launched an audacious bid to snatch this season’s Ellinbank and District Football League grand final. Pakenham, one of the South East Football Netball League’s flagship clubs, submitted a proposal to the EDFL in response to its failure to lure the SEFNL grand final to its home base at Toomuc Reserve. Officer will once again host the SEFNL grand final after conducting a very successful running of the event last year. If Pakenham’s proposal is successful, it will mean the two biggest football leagues in the region will host their showcase events on the same day - and just five kilometres apart. SEFNL chairman Kahl Heinze cut loose at Pakenham for what he said was a selfish attitude to football and netball in the region. “In my opinion their (Pakenham) behaviour in regards to this has been childish, petulant, selfish, and extremely disrespectful to all of the SEFNL clubs and the broader SEFNL community,” Heinze said. EDFL president Roger Gwynne made his own thoughts on the issue perfectly clear. “Why would we want Pakenham?” he said. “Why wouldn’t we use our own grounds?

“They want the gate, the bar, and the canteen ... they don’t want much, do they? “They sent at least a 10-page submission to us and it will be discussed in about 15 seconds.” Gwynne said the matter would be raised at a meeting tonight (Wednesday), but he said - in his mind - “it’d be killing the both of us (the EDFL and SEFNL) having two grand finals that close together”. He said issues with transport, security and available police would pose no end of problems, adding “I’m not even suggesting we look at it”. Gwynne said EDFL fans could expect this season’s finals series to be played at a smaller section of grounds capable of hosting multiple finals. The Gazette understands that Garfield - barring anything unforeseen will host the 2016 deciders. The Pakenham Football Club has responded to Gwynne’s claims, saying they are factually incorrect. “The Pakenham Football Club, after consulting with the EDFL, was well aware the finals beverage package had been awarded to the Dusties (Warragul Industrials) for the finals of 2016,” the club commented on its website. “In our submission, we noted that the Dusties could honour that contract and the EDFL would control the gate, security, and collect those moneys as per normal finals series. The position of the Pakenham Football Club was for the leagues

Whitehorse finishes off Falcons By DAVID NAGEL VWFL REPORT ENDEAVOUR Hills will still fancy its chances of playing finals football in VWFL Division One despite a hardfought 14-point loss to Whitehorse at Barry Simon Reserve on Sunday. Whitehorse leap-frogged the Falcons into fourth place with a fast-finishing, 4.6 (30) to 2.4(16), victory after scores were locked at three-quarter time. The Falcons road ahead sees a tough visit to top-of-the-table Kew this week, before games against La Trobe, Redan and Diamond Creek, the bottom three teams in the competition. The Falcons were keen to bounce

back from last week’s loss to Pascoe Vale, but Whitehorse were the better team in the first quarter, denying the Falcons any avenue to goal. The home side lifted in the second quarter, with Houda Sidani kicking truly, and when she did so again in the third term - the only score for the quarter - scores were level at 2.4 at the final break. The Falcons were outplayed in the final term, with Whitehorse kicking 2.2 to no score to earn a well-deserved victory. Sidani was the most dangerous forward on the ground, booting two of the best, while Liz Whitfield, Brooke Kerrison, Bec Sadler, Sarah Wallace and

Jess Xerri also tried their hearts out. The Falcons play Kew, away, at 11.30am this Saturday. In Division Two, Cranbourne’s last home game for the season didn’t go exactly according to script, the Eagles easily defeated by Sunbury by 52 points at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Eagles have really toiled hard this season, and when Cat Robinson kicked a goal in the third quarter it looked like a respectable score line was on the cards. But Sunbury showed its finals credentials in the final term, scoring 4.5 to 0.0 to finish with an impressive 8.10 (58) to 1.0 (6) victory. The Eagles never gave up all day

and that spirit was led by Rachel Hunt and Stacey Mountney, with Jade Forsyth and Taylah Edwards also contributing fine four-quarter efforts. Ash Edwards and Hollie Jones also fought the game out until the finals siren. With two wins over Mordialloc, another over St Kilda, and a season-best victory over VU Western Spurs, the Eagles can be mighty proud of their achievements this year. The Eagles will hit the road for their last game of the season this week, against Seaford on Saturday, with a high-noon start. In the South East Division, Chloe Hunt took her season tally to 33 with eight goals in Hallam’s dominant,

18.13 (121) to 1.3 (9), victory over Mt Eliza, Endeavour Hills 2.6 (18) went down to Knox 8.8 (56), while Beaconsfield maintains second position on the ladder despite a 21-point loss to Rosebud at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles lost 2.2 (14) to 4.11 (35), with Millie Shone and Katie Angelis booting goals and Naomi Rice, Jade Hough and Sarah Allingham doing some great work around the ground. All three teams will hit the road for the final round of home-and-away matches this week, with Endeavour Hills driving to Warragul, Beacy to Edi-Asp, and Hallam taking on Seaford at 10am on Sunday morning.

O’Bryan decides to leave Lions den

Cavaliers hold their ground

By DAVID NAGEL

THE Casey Cavaliers have maintained their place in the Big V basketball Division 1 men’s top three after a thumping 81-58 win away to Chelsea at the Patterson River Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Cavs opened the contest with a 24-13 first quarter - restricting Chelsea to just 28 per cent from the field while, by contrast, the visitors shot a 56 per cent clip. While they struggled to reach that standard over the remainder of the game, it was their work on the defensive end that proved the biggest difference. Chelsea was restricted to just 26 per cent from the floor for the contest, while also turning the ball over 17 times. The Cavs made five of their 11 three-point attempts in the big win and Brent Hobba led the way with four of those. The game’s top scorer, he finished with a huge 28-point, 11-rebound double-double on 50 per cent shooting. Ben Louis was even more efficient on the offensive end, draining 11 of his 17 shot attempts and finishing with 26 points. Dean Johnson, meanwhile, finished just shy of a double-double with 18 points and nine boards.

PAKENHAM coach Steve O’Bryan is leaving his options open after announcing he will stand down as the Lions’ leader at the end of the season. O’Bryan met with club officials on Thursday night, and then informed his players after training of his decision to end his tenure after four years at the helm. O’Bryan confirmed the decision to himself while away on a recent 10day trip to Chicago. “Being away it gave me time to think and it’s probably the best decision for both parties moving forward,” O’Bryan said. “I love the club, it was a really tough thing to do, but the message needs to be different if the club is to go forward with this group of players. It’s really disappointing to leave because I came to Pakenham trying to win a premiership, we haven’t done that, and it hurts to walk away being a very proud man. It’s frustrating, but what can you do, what’s done is done I guess.” The Lions’ leader joins Beaconsfield’s Clint Evans and Officer’s Brad Jones on a growing list of coaches to have already announced they will finish up at the end of 2016. In a remarkable season of coaching news, the Gazette understands up to three other senior roles have ques-

tion marks hanging over them as we head to the pointy end of the SEFNL season. O’Bryan brought solidarity to a club that had a tumultuous 2012, with new appointment Gary Connolly lasting just three rounds before Joe Lenders took over in an interim capacity. O’Bryan initially won over the playing group, taking the club from ninth to fourth in his first season, winning the elimination final over Berwick before bowing out to Beaconsfield in the first semi-final. But that sudden spike has changed into a gradual decline. The Lions lost the elimination final to the Wickers in 2014 before finishing sixth last year, a position that looks likely again this season. Pakenham would like O’Bryan to stay on as a player next year but the departing coach said his future was still well and truly up in the air. “I’m massively undecided about what I’ll do next year, I’ve got some serious thinking to do” he said. “I love the club but I still want to coach, I’m keen to coach, but I really don’t know what’s out there. I’m open to hear what’s out there and then have a good hard think about it from there.” Pakenham football manager Simon Bevan said the club would never say never to any option going forward, but was likely to revert to a nonplaying coach for next season.

With just one game to come in their regular season - this Sunday in Geelong from 2pm against the Supercats - the Cavs are third on the ladder, a win clear of Melton in fourth but behind Warrnambool in second. Casey’s Division 2 women’s side, however, went down by 13 points at home to the North East Bushrangers on Saturday night 53-40. The Cavs were held to just 17 per cent from the floor in a disastrous first quarter on the offensive end and struggled to recover. Their shooting woes continued to start the third - scoring just seven points for the period on 13 per cent. Both the Cavs and the Bushrangers struggled mightily from the field all game, with both shooting well under 30 per cent. Tarryn Wilkin was the biggest shining light for the home side with 10 points and 16 boards. With the result, the Cavs slipped from top spot on the ladder to second, with a game to come this Saturday night from 7.45 at the State Basketball Centre against Blackburn. Casey’s Youth League 2 men’s side, meanwhile, went down by seven points to Mornington - 72-65 - in their final game before the play-offs.

Thriller of thrillers By DAVID NAGEL THRILLING results were the order of the day in the South East Football Netball League with no more than a straight kick separating all four games in round 14. But one - well it stood head and shoulders above the rest. No doubt the match of the day, and possibly the season, took place at Kalora Park, where Narre Warren rose to the top of the ladder with a stirring six-point victory over reigning champions Berwick. A huge crowd greeted both sides, the Magpies Past Players Day ensuring a cracking atmosphere for a classic game of football. Neither side could escape the other's clutches, with hard tackling and a ferocious attack on the ball, keeping scores close for the full four quarters. Scores were level at three-quarter time when Narre coach Heath Black gave a rousing address to his players. “You are not going to let these people down, we spoke about the history of this great club before the match,” Black said to his players measuredly, pointing to the past players, before raising his tone. “You have the opportunity right now to etch your names into the history books of this great club.” The Magpies certainly did that, with midfielders Josh Tonna, Trent Cody and Dean Kelly producing impressive last quarters to see their side home in a thriller. “It’s a great feeling, we tapped into the Past Players Day because it’s really important to recognise a footy club’s traditions, cultures, beliefs and values,” Black said after the match. Cody and Jake Richardson kicked a goal each in the final term and both finished with two, while Luke Nelson, Kurt Batt and Mitch Johnson slotted a couple each for the Wickers. The reigning champs slip from first to third on the ladder. Doveton’s topsy-turvy season continued with the Doves going down to Officer by five points at Starling Road. The Doves haven’t put two wins or losses together in their last nine outings, and succumbed to a desperate Kangaroos outfit in the final term. Goals to Jesse Longmuir, Ilan Osman and Matty Clarke saw the Roos turn around a 10-point deficit at the final break.

Noble Park recruit Trent Cody was cool in a crisis for Narre Warren, kicking the match-winner in the Magpies epic six-point victory over Berwick at Kalora Park on Saturday. 157133 Picture: ROB CAREW Clarke kicked three, Dylan Chapman was absolutely superb in the ruck, and Blair Allan played like a bull for the Roos. Lachie Batten, Nick Battle and Pickles Henry were best for the Doves. Pakenham may have lost its coach Steve O’Bryan for next season, after he stood down last week, but made it three wins on the trot with a gutsy six-point victory over Tooradin at Westernport Oval.

Scores were locked after an open first half, before things got wet and scores dried up after the break. Tooradin led by seven points at the last change, and played with dogged determination in the final term, but goals to Adam Alberni and Jake Smith gave the Lions a satisfying victory. And finally Beau Dowler proved the difference between Beaconsfield

and Hampton Park, kicking four goals in the Eagles four-point victory at Holm Park Reserve. The Eagles were 17 points up midway through the final term before the Redbacks almost snatched the win. Jordan Roberts and Jesse Linkins were terrific for the winners while Billy Thomas played a great ruckman’s game for the Redbacks.

Four vie for finals berth in ripper By DAVID NAGEL NARRE Warren and Beaconsfield are safe, but the battle between Doveton, Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Tooradin for a finals berth in the South East Football Netball League looks set for a thrilling conclusion. Hampton Park showed it is not far off the pace of the top two, pushing Beaconsfield to the limit in a highquality, 43-38, contest at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Beacy got the jump on the Redbacks, leading 15-9 at quarter time and maintained a similar advantage through to the final whistle. Rania Waller (goal defence) and Maddi Hanlen (wing defence) giving the Eagles their best shot, but they just fell short in the end as the Eagles showed all the qualities of a top team. Danni Cameron (goal keeper) and

Gabby Stinear (GD) dug their heels in at the defensive end of the court, while Mel Davies (wing attack) and Amanda McKenna (centre) were terrific in the clinches. Tooradin bounced back from last week’s thrashing at the hands of Doveton with a 46-35 victory over Pakenham at Westernport Oval. The Gulls did most of their damage in the first half, leading by nine at quarter time and 12 as they turned for home. Tara Smith (C), Holly Gillespie (WD) and Jess Whitford (GD) were at the top of their games for the Gulls while Olivia Hunt (GD), Meaghan Musgrave (C) and Bec Cox (WD) tried exceptionally hard for the Lions. Doveton was forced to work hard against a persistent ROC, eventually claiming a 55-43 victory at Starling Road.

The Doves just couldn’t break free in the first half, but built their six-goal lead nicely in the third term. A 16-8 third quarter put the issue beyond doubt to give the Doves consecutive wins for just the second time this year. The familiar faces of Aila Pera (GD) and Liz Edwards (GK) got busy in the third term to shake off the Kangaroos, while Rahni Samason (goal shooter) was once again dominant under the ring. Tess Young (GK), Jaz Cross (GK/C) and Gemma Stacey (WA) gave everything they had for ROC. And finally, Narre Warren kept its unbeaten run intact with a dominant 60-26 victory over Berwick at Kalora Park. Leigh Taylor (C/WA), Bec Potalej (WD/C), and Demi Brettoner (WA) were driving forces for the Magpies

Narre Warren celebrated another great win on Saturday, this time over Berwick. The team from left: Greg Heinrich (coach), Adele Clydesdale, Tracey Dell, Tayla Shannon, Gabby Dwyer, Chloe Phillips, Kara Hargrave, Demi Brettoner and Jade Heinrich (coach). Front row: Leigh Taylor and Picture: ROB CAREW Bec Potalej. 157133 who strode out to a 15-goal lead at the first break. But full credit to Berwick, they were outclassed but fought the game out strongly. The Wickers will gain some confi-

dence from a tight last quarter, where Charlotte Tiplady (WD), Emily LaRoche (C) and Emma Clarke (GS) put their best foot forward. Cranbourne had the bye.
