There’s no school like the old school LILYDALE Primary School celebrated its 150th anniversary in style on Friday, 29 July. Students arrived dressed in old-fashioned clothing and took part in numerous activities throughout the day, which aimed to show the history of the school. Former students, staff and teachers also participated in the event. One highlight was a school assembly which featured a choir and dancing. Girls’ foot y grows up MOUNT Evelyn Football Club will be the first team in the AFL Yarra Ranges league to field a senior women’s football team in the 2017 season. The decision to start a women’s senior team comes after the success of the junior girls’ football teams at Mount Evelyn. In just two years the Mount Evelyn junior girls’ teams have grown from two teams to three, with over 80 girls playing across three age groups in the 2016 season with all three making finals appearances. Due to the growth and success of the girls' teams, the club is now at a point where they are ready to set up a senior women’s football team as well. Junior club president Mal Darke said a women’s team in 2017 was a sure thing. “We have had conversations with the senior men’s club and AFL Victoria as to
hosting a senior women’s team next year and it is going to happen,” he said. “We just have to do all the admin and get it up and running.” Emma Darke and Jessie Gates both play for the Mount Evelyn Under 15s girls’ team and say they would love to see more women involved in playing football. “It’s a really good atmosphere here and all the girls on the team are really lovely and we always have a really good time - even if we lose it’s still a great opportunity to play,” Ms Darke said. “The girls’ football is a great opportunity for all of us to get in and be healthy and I reckon that the women’s football league is going to be great,” Ms Gates said. “Girls don’t play football that much but since we started everyone has been really excited about it and wants to come and watch our games and the
boys are really nice to us and they are fun and support us in a big way which is good,” Ms Gates said. While the club has had huge success with the junior girls’ teams and are keen to get a women’s side out on the field, there are still some challenges the club faces. “We have had huge growth in popularity for girls playing footy but along with that comes problems with change rooms and inadequate facilities at the club,” Mr Darke said. “We need to desperately upgrade the facilities as we have no space to have the boys and girls playing together at the moment because our facilities don’t suit it. “They are too old and they don’t have the ability to have the genders segregated.” Mount Evelyn Football Club Vice President Graeme Northey said despite the clubrooms being outdated, they

were determined to make a women’s team as comfortable as possible. “We want to have the rooms redeveloped but until that happens we are looking at portable buildings and hopefully we get them as a temporary measure,” he said. “The AFL is really keen to have more women’s teams so they are very supportive and we are looking to grants we can obtain from AFL to set up the women’s team.” Up to this point, the drive towards establishing a women’s team has been a club funded and driven initiative but the club is seeking more support. “We really hope AFL Victoria will get on board because we have been a ground-breaking club in this area in relation to girls footy and now branching into women’s footy as well,” Mr Darke said. “We hope AFL Victoria will support us to the same degree we have

supported women’s footy and girls involvement in footy.” Mr Northey also said the local community have a part to play in getting this women’s side funded and playing. “We have approached some potential sponsors for the women’s team,” he said. “We have had some interest so hopefully we can get that over the line and that’ll help funding the women straight-up so their out of pocket expense isn’t great.” “Professionals in Mount Evelyn, Bendigo Bank, and Hotondo have all been great sponsors of the footy club,” he said. The club has invited any women who want to play in the senior side next year or businesses looking to support the women’s team to contact Graeme Northey on 0417 363 237 or football manager Daniel Thiele on 0411 598 036.

Wandin CWA blows 85 candles By KATH GANNAWAY WOMEN from Country Women Association (CWA) groups across Yarra Ranges helped celebrate Wandin CWA’s 85th birthday on Tuesday 26 July. Rose Cottage at Monbulk was packed with members the Yarra Valley Group of CWA branches including Wandin, Monbulk, Wandin Yallock Night Branch and Healesville Night Chicks, with Mooroolbark members joining the party as special guests. Wandin president Margaret Skipworth said the club was the oldest in the group, and said that in her 25 years as a member there had been many changes.
The image of the CWA as a ‘tea and scones’ organisation, she said, was just part of the story. Margaret said while craft and cookery were still popular, CWA was involved in a broad range of community work at a local, national and international level. She said with a lot of younger women now coming back to traditional skills, it was a good time for them to join and enjoy not only the companionship and friendship that CWA offered, but to have the opportunity to learn new skills, and share their own. Wandin’s longest-serving member, Edna Parker, 90, was

given a huge round of applause as she cut the birthday cake. She said she had always wanted to join CWA but had waited until her children had grown up to join. “That was 42 years ago, and I have loved every minute of it,” Edna said. Another special guest was 96-year-old retired member Daphne Egar from Wandin. Daphne retired at 90 after 50 years as a member. “I joined when I came new to Wandin, and someone suggested I join to get to know some of the ladies,” she said. Anyone interested can call Yarra Valley Group president Jan Miller on 9756 6962.

Fast food burglaries probed POLICE are calling for witnesses after a series of burglaries at fast food stores around Mount Evelyn last month. Belgrave police Sergeant Carolyn Sunderland said that between 26-29 July, a pizza shop, a fish and chip shop and a kebab store were broken into around Mount Evelyn. Cash was stolen from the stores, and a cash register was stolen from the pizza shop. Anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour around the area, or who has any information, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A 15-year-old Monbulk girl has been cautioned by police after being connected to a burglary in the area last month. Monbulk police Sergeant Mark Knight said the girl had been cautioned for burglary and theft after money went missing from a private residence on 16 July. On 27 July, the girl was processed for the crimes and cautioned.
Protect your cars plea MONBULK police are calling on residents to protect their cars from number plate theft, giving away anti-theft screws at an event on Saturday 6 August. Police, CFA and RSL staff will be hosting the event at the Monbulk RSL car park from 9am to 1pm on the day, supplying and fitting anti-theft screws to cars for a gold coin donation. The donations will go towards the Monbulk Guides and Scouts. Monbulk police Sergeant Mark Knight said

the event was organised to address an increase in number plate theft. The anti-theft screws cannot be undone with regular tools, and make number plates significantly harder for thieves to steal. The Guides will be running a sausage sizzle on the day, to raise money to send the group to Tasmania.

Ride within the law MONBULK police are reminding residents to ride motorbikes legally, after a 17-year-old was caught riding unlicensed, unregistered and without a helmet. Sergeant Mark Knight said the rider was caught in Plowman Street, Olinda, earlier in the year, riding an unregistered motorbike without a licence or helmet. The rider, an Olinda boy, was cautioned, and Sgt Knight said riders must obey the laws before getting on the road. “If they’re going to ride on the road, they have to be over 18 years of age, have a current learner's permit or licence, wear the appropriate safety gear and make sure their bike is roadworthy and registered,” he said.
Nabbed with cannabis A 25-year-old Wandin North man has received a caution from police after being caught with the possession of cannabis in Silvan in July. At 5pm on Sunday 24 July, the man was stopped by police at the rear of the Silvan football oval and found to be in possession of cannabis. Monbulk police Sergeant Mark Knight said the man received a caution as a result.

CFA issues remain
Helpers need help after SES roof razing HEAVY storms across the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding regions last week highlighted an ongoing frustration for the Emerald SES Unit, which says it is constantly battling sub-par equipment and facilities. While being swamped with call-outs for assistance throughout a 90-minute period, members were also dealing with leaks in their garage where vital equipment is stored. This comes after battling mechanical issues with one of their trucks just weeks before. Pictured at the SES base are, from left, Mary Copp, Picture: ROB CAREW Peter Copp, Steve Reid, Matt Steckel and Andrew Buck, inspecting the collapsing roof. 157350
Nothing to see here I NOTE with concern comments made by Deputy Premier (James) Merlino regarding the current dispute between the UFU, the Andrews Government and CFA volunteers. Mr Merlino claims talk of war and conflict is divisive, dangerous and just plain wrong. Unfortunately, Mr Merlino is, in this case, the one who is wrong. He clearly has not read the EBA himself, or maybe could not get through the 396 pages. The damage that has been caused to the CFA by Mr Andrews’ intervention and bully tactics, for Peter Marshall, is most probably terminal.
With so many experienced people gone from the organisation, and the vitriol caused by UFU trolls on social media, the future seems grim. While the latest version of the EBA is much better than the original 406 pages, several clauses still affect volunteers and will have a huge effect on the cost of the fire services levy. Mr Merlino only needs to check his calendar to see the war is not over. He has been uninvited to many CFA functions, including a brigade dinner where he lives. But nothing to see here folks; we have solved this bitter dispute that has lasted over 1000 days ... and lost Bill Shorten the election in the process! Shane Miller, Emerald.
Please explain (DEPUTY Victorian Premier) James Merlino: if this EBA is so good for the CFA and won’t impact on its running, why did your predecessor (former Emergency Services Minister) Jane Garret resign? Why did you sack the CFA board and replace it with a ‘yes minister’ board? Why did the chief fire officer resign? Why is emergency management commissioner, Craig Lapsley, being used to oversee its implementation? I, and many other constituents, await your explanation to these questions. Dennis Yeats, Tecoma.

(VICTORIAN Premier) Daniel Andrews and his ‘yes man’ Emergency Services Minister, James Merlino, would have you convinced the disagreement between the United Firefighters Union (UFU) and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) is resolved. Yet, the reality is that issues remain. At the federal election, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull committed to adjusting the Fair Work Act to ensure CFA volunteers have a voice in an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) that affects their day-to-day operations. The Minister for Emergency Services is still stating there is no veto in the agreement before the CFA to sign; either the Minister is misleading the community and volunteers or he just does not understand. On two separate occasions, the Minister has been caught red-faced in Parliament when CFA volunteers have signed statutory declarations stating he lied about presumptive legislation and the UFU EBA. In his latest column in the ‘Mail’ (‘Time to heal the rifts’, 26 July), Mr Merlino stated there are no veto clauses and no more problems with this EBA. The reality is, though, this EBA remains unlawful. Up to 50 clauses provides for the UFU’s takeover of the CFA and the court agreed. Hence, this is why they placed an injunction on signing the agreement. While Mr Merlino wil try to have you believe this is Liberal Party scaremongering, we are not alone in expressing these concerns. In fact, the former (Emergency Services) Minister, Jane Garret, the former board of the CFA, the former chief executive officer of the CFA, Victoria’s Crown Council, Jack Rush QC, and the Victorian Equal and Opportunity Rights Commission all share these concerns. It is with great disappointment that I must emphasise ‘former’, because Daniel Andrews has since sacked or bullied all those who oppose his bid to hand control of the CFA over to the UFU. This is part of Daniel Andrews’ payback deal to the union who got him elected in 2014. Brad Battin, Member for Gembrook, Shadow Minister for Emergency Services.

Shelter gives peace a chance By PETER DOUGLAS THE fiercely debated future of the Emerald Bus Shelter may have reached its conclusion, with Cardinia Shire Council and Emerald Community House (ECH) reaching an agreement. The existing bus shelter on Belgrave-Gembrook Road is set to be replaced with a heritage-style bus shelter, with the shire announcing the decision on Wednesday, 27 July. Cardinia Shire has maintained its stance the shelter needs to be updated to meet community safety and disability compliance standards, but has taken onboard feedback from ECH. At the request of ECH, the replacement bus shelter will be painted in a heritage cream colour to match the colour scheme of the church hall that is located behind the bus stops. In the lead-up to the decision, ECH members met with council officers and Cr Leticia Wilmot on Thursday, 21 July, to discuss a proposal. General Manager Community Well-being at Cardinia Shire, Jenny Scicluna, told the ‘Mail’ she believed the best outcome had been achieved for the community. “We understand there are many views on this issue, but it’s great to have a resolution,” she said. “We have heard feedback from the community they are grateful a decision has been made. “The process has been quite fractious but, moving forward, we are confident we can continue to have a positive relationship with ECH.” Numerous concerns surrounded the much-loved shelter between the two parties, many of which have gained widespread media exposure. Most prominently, these included whether it was the Shire or ECH that was responsible for the shelter’s main-

shelter, while the ECH will maintain the artwork. Ms Scicluna said there were still a few matters to be sorted, but believed the parties had made good progress.
“We’re still undecided where a community noticeboard will be placed,” she said. “If it is inside the bus shelter, there will be a memorandum of understanding that council is to maintain that noticeboard. “The mosaic (in the shelter) will be treated with great care ... (but) there is no location decided on just yet.” Cardinia Council and ECH have also agreed to work together to install additional bench seating at the site. The shelter has been a prominent fixture in the community over the past 20 years and has grown to become an unofficial noticeboard. But council identified the shelter as one needing to be replaced, in order to meet safety standards. ECH argued the shelter is owned by the community and sought to gain support for its survival. Protests and sleep-outs followed, with some protesters braving near-zero temperatures during a night-time vigil. The dispute between council and ECH reached one of its highest points when protesters refused to allow shire officers to erect safety signs on Friday, 15 July. Council officers had been ordered to put up five signs, which warned people not to climb on the shelter’s roof. Though, now a decision has been made, Ms Scicluna is confident the rift can be healed. “The ECH does some great work in the community and council will continue to support them with funds and services,” she said. “ECH has been critical of council decisions in the past, but we’re confident we can move forward and maintain a positive relationship.” The new shelter will be installed as soon as scheduling of works can be finalised.

More money, more problems THE subject matter for my column this time is perhaps a little dry, but I encourage readers to persevere as it contains important information that will affect them directly. On 1 July, Victorian Government taxes, fees and charges went up across the board. However, some of the increases were more than a slap in the face; they were an outright king-hit. Homebuyers face up to $2234 more in fees when they purchase a home, under massive increases to land transfer fees which are up 163 per cent. These higher fees will tip an extra $140 million into the coffers of the economically reckless Andrews Government over the next four years. Then, we have the Fire Services Property Levy which will increase by $46.1 million. Further, unscheduled increases could be on the cards to pay for the outlandish demands being made by the United Firefighters Union (UFU) at the expense of our volunteer CFA members.

Only the Federal Coalition may be able to put the anchors on this deal which would be bad for the CFA and for Victorian taxpayers. Rents will rise as the stamp duty surcharge payable on property purchased by international investors rises from three per cent to seven per cent. For those looking for cheap recreational activities, even those are under attack with the 28-day recreational fishing licences: up from $12 to $20. So why do our fees and charges need to go up, leaving less in your bank accounts? We are paying for ballooning public sector wages and wasteful projects
in Victoria that are about political outcomes, not economic outcomes. Governments globally are being urged by financial experts to exercise fiscal restraint as political instabilities affect the fortunes of domestic economies. Yet the Andrews Labor Government has signed us up to a $1.6 billion Skyrail that the people don’t want. Then, last month we found out that the creators of myki will receive another $700 million from the Andrews Government to have another go at botching our transport ticketing. And who could forget the $1.1 billion Labor flushed down the toilet not to build East West link? Locally, there have been question marks about a recent cash injection rumoured to be $2 million from the Andrews Government into a company which is backed by the deep pocketed Middle Eastern company Investcorp. It is not clear why our taxpayer dollars were needed to prop up a cashed-up company.

More Aboriginal jobs call By JESSE GRAHAM THE COUNCIL has defended its intake of Indigenous employees, following a speech at last week’s meeting from Councillor Noel Cliff accusing the organisation of ‘tokenism’. Cr Cliff raised the issue as an Item through the Chair at Tuesday, 26 July’s Yarra Ranges Council meeting, criticising the council’s intake of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees. He said the council hired an Indigenous person, but only for a 12-month traineeship that ended on 29 July. He said the council had previously spoken about employing four people from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background, and said not having a permanent role for the trainee was “cow manure”. “I would like to think that we might just, for once in my life here, actually provide positions formally permanent positions,” Cr Cliff said. “We’ve got reconciliation and I’ve found we love debating the glory of reconciliation and what we’re doing in that, but if we’re not providing these positions, I think it’s just a bit of claptrap - it’s just tokenism. “Put your money where your mouth is, and provide these positions.” Yarra Ranges Mayor Jason Callanan said the council currently had three employees who identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and that there was no goal or target to employ a specific number of Indigenous people at council. “We have developed a diversity and inclusion policy which is
planned to roll out to council employees during August/September,” Cr Callanan said. “This policy will outline council’s expectations and responsibilities regarding diversity and inclusion of all employees.” He said a steering committee would be formed to develop a diversity and inclusion strategy once the policy had been rolled out, with initiatives to address focus areas. “One of which will be supporting our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander employees, including recruitment strategies,” Cr Callanan said. “We presented the diversity and inclusion policy to the Indigenous Advisory Committee and received very positive feedback from them - we also incorporated their recommendations and have their endorsement.” The Yarra Ranges Council employs 891 people, amounting to 608 full-time equivalent roles. Cr Callanan said recruitment strategies had been implemented to encourage Indigenous candidates, and that an increase in applications and registrations from Indigenous people had occurred in the last six months. “Council acknowledges the challenges associated with achieving our employment targets and we are committed to increasing Indigenous employment and retaining Indigenous employees,” he said. “Council has a genuine and enduring commitment to the Yarra Ranges Aboriginal community and to reconciliation.”

Has future of NDIS been HACCed? By JESSE GRAHAM
MP James Merlino with Sarah, 11, and Charlie, 5, at Gladesville Primary School Breakfast Club. 157446 Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS
School brekkie club catching on all over By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE start of this school term saw two schools in the Monbulk electorate join the State Governmentsupported breakfast club program. The School Breakfast Club program is a collaboration between the Victorian State Government and welfare food agency Foodbank to give students a healthy start to the day. According to a survey of teach-
ers conducted by Foodbank, about three primary school students per classroom in Victoria arrive at school without having had breakfast. The survey found over two thirds of students who miss out on breakfast find it difficult to concentrate and can become lethargic, with over half experiencing learning difficulties or exhibiting behavioural problems. The School Breakfast Club pro-
gram aims to address this problem by providing free breakfast in 500 of the state’s most disadvantaged schools. With the beginning of term three in July, Sherbrooke Community School in Sassafras and Gladesville Primary School in Kilsyth have started serving breakfasts to their students. Education Minister James Merlino said a healthy breakfast was very important for students to learn
and retain information. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - it sets our children up to concentrate, learn and be at their best. “Unfortunately, not all kids are able to start the day with breakfast at home,” he said. The program has been rolled out to about half the target schools so far, with another 255 opening during the current school term.

COUNCIL is asking residents to comment on its future as a Home and Community Care (HACC) provider, with councillors signalling to continue its services and not register as an NDIS provider. At the Yarra Ranges Council’s 26 July meeting, councillors unanimously voted to signal its intent to continue as a HACC provider for people aged 64 and below who will not be eligible for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support from November 2017. Councillor Fiona McAllister supported the motion and says that only 130 of council’s current 2500 HACC clients will be eligible for the NDIS when it’s introduced. She said the decision was part of forming council’s role in regards to the scheme. “Whenever there is a significant change in government policy, we need to reflect on what is our best role, or our role in best supporting the community,” Cr McAllister said. Both Cr McAllister and Cr Len Cox, who seconded the motion, praised the introduction of the NDIS, and endorsed council’s stance
to continue providing HACC services. Council’s Manager of Aged and Disability Services Cheryl McInnes said the decision was part of the community engagement around the changes, and not a final sign-off. “When it (the NDIS) starts to roll out in the eastern region, the various providers will be making their presence known and indicating what they’ll offer people and so forth - what we see council’s role is, for those people who are currently on HACC services who will be eligible to go to NDIS, we will try and support them through that process where we can,” Ms McInnes said. “Once that’s fully rolled out, we will continue to provide support to people who are not eligible for NDIS. “Our commitment then, is therefore to make sure people aren’t disadvantaged if they can’t get onto the NDIS.” Ms McInnes said the council was “very interested” in hearing from people who were receiving council services and wanted to have their say about the HACC and NDIS changes. Medical centre on the up and up By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE extensions at Emerald Medical Centre have moved one step closer to completion with the erection of the framework for the new upper storey and roof. After five years of planning, the builders have completed the initial foundations on the ground floor. Emerald Medical Centre can provide its normal services again, although still operating within a building site. “Thankyou and congratulations to the doctors, staff and all of our patients for your endurance during the build,” Dr George Somers, principal at Emerald Medical Centre for over 35 years said. “We have turned the corner, now that the builders have moved upstairs. All of our services are almost back to normal and all doctors have returned to their normal hours.” The extension will provide over twice the current space, enabling Emerald Medical Centre to significantly increase its services to the community. There will be greater emphasis on a holistic approach to the health care of our entire community. “Emerald Medical Centre will be a ‘one-stop-shop’ for all health services required by our community,” Dr Somers said. “Our mission is to deliver evidencebased improvements to the health of the Hills by providing and monitoring comprehensive team-based care for individual patients within our own community, particularly those with chronic and complex diseases.” The broad group of highly experienced general practitioners and nurses

will be completed before Christmas and we will start to develop our expanded services in the New Year,” Dr Somers said.
THANK YOU EMERALD! The team at Emerald Medical Centre thank you for your understanding during our extension. We’ve turned a corner and it’s only up from here! We’re glad to say we’re now back to normal hours and services. beentertained dining, arts, music and more… Kevin Bloody Wilson is set to entertain local audiences with his renowned shows. 157360
Kev brings the laughs By PETER DOUGLAS LOVE him or loathe him, there is no denying Kevin ‘Bloody’ Wilson has wound himself into the fabric of Australian culture. In fact, ‘KBW’ is possibly one of the few comedians of his era that helped to shape the Australian humour many know today. But his journey isn’t over and he’s set to ‘wow’ local audiences with a performance at Ferntree Gully Hotel on Wednesday, 17 August. With his show imminent, the ‘Mail’ spoke to the great man. And it’s dead-set true what they say about ‘KBW’, he’s a genuinely nice, articulate, down-to-earth Australian. However, he happens to also be extremely funny, as well as hell-bent on stamping out political correctness in this country. “This is my final farewell tour ... in fact it’s my second one and I could be doing them for another decade if I’m lucky,” he said. “I see everyone doing their final concerts, so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon.” While the farewell theme is
clearly a joke, his longevity as a performer is something to be taken seriously. Many of his generation will certainly remember his classics, which really grew from humble beginnings and took on a life of their own in the early 1980s. Classics such as ‘Hey, Santa Claus!’ and ‘Living Next Door to Allan’, songs many Australians would be familiar with. But it hasn’t stopped there, with audiences continuing to rediscover his classics and lap up his latest offerings, which includes his 2013 release, ‘Wrong Wrong Wrong’. “I’m now seeing three generations in the crowds; daughters, mothers and grandmothers,” he said. “In the early days, I thought it was going to be tough to break through to female audiences. “But guys were telling their wives to come down and see the show.” Funnily enough, it seems almost unsurprising that ‘KBW’ never intended the shows to become so popular. His shows have extended from local pubs to sell-outs worldwide.
“It was never something I intended to do,” he said. “It was just for my mates and it kind of went on from there, but not a bad way to make a career, is it.” ‘KBW’ originally recorded songs on a cassette tape for his mates, which drew on his experiences from working in the mines in Kalgoorlie in the 1980s. Not long after, there was an LP called ‘Your Average Australian Yobbo’ and Australian audiences couldn’t get enough. Three decades later and he’s a household name. “I often test out new material in my shows and ad-lib, but I always roll out the favourite ones,” he said. “I love watching the reaction of the fans. “My music tends to help people remember about the good times, which is a special thing for a comedian.” A guilty pleasure or Aussie legend – either way, audiences will have the chance to see ‘KBW’ in the flesh. For more details or bookings, contact (03) 9758 6544 or visit www.ferntreegullyhotel. com.au.

Donald moves mountains By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE ain't no mountain high enough for 33-year-old Belgrave tradie and Berwick gym regular Colin Donald. Mr Donald, once a physical wreck, is registered for the world’s highest marathon on Mt Everest in May next year. It’s remarkable that he is on his feet at all after a critical motorbike crash 14 years ago that severed an artery, and shattered his leg and pelvis. Mr McDonalde was told by onlookers on Eastern Freeway at the time that his bike was clipped by a car causing him and his bike to strike the rear of a hatch and launch metres in the air. As he lay in Royal Melbourne Hospital heavily dosed on painkillers, doctors advised Mr Donald’s mother that his left leg has to be amputated. Otherwise, he will not walk again, the experts told her. Fortunately, she refused. She said it was up to Mr Donald to make the decision. “I didn’t want to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life,” he says. “I was planning to walk again – and that was pretty much it.” During a gruelling year of rehab, Mr Donald walked first on crutches. He then took what was at first a “very small step” unassisted. He recalls the intense pain as blood rushed down into his leg the first time he eased it off the side of his hospital bed. His scarred lower left leg, swollen by lymphedema, is a visible though painless reminder of the journey. Just two years ago, Mr Donald had an idle life and reckons he wouldn’t have been able to run three kilometres let alone a marathon. Then he took another giant step.

Trainer Lochlan Burke and his inspirational client Colin Donald. 157312 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS He booked himself into an intense regime at commando camps, boxing, kick-boxing and weights up to three sessions a day at Personal Performance Training Centre in Berwick. Mr Donald credits the gym’s brother coaches Lochlan and Marcus Burke at the aptly-named Intrepid Street gym for urging him on in his pursuit, dropping 39 kilos and now being the image of health. They are pushing each other in the midst of a healthy diet blitz termed the 12-week Challenge at the moment. In his training, Mr Donald is running plenty of steep kilometres in the Dandenongs – including a 15-kilometre trek from Belgrave to Cockatoo and
the Thousand Steps. He with another five Personal Performance regulars have just competed in a Spartan half-marathon, which is a 21-kilometere run combined with a commando obstacle course. An avid adventure-book reader, Mr Donald is also inspired by the travails of Australian explorers Cas and Jonesy, who have kayaked unsupported to New Zealand and Antarctica. He yearns to summit Everest and the 6000-plus kilometre Himalayan peak Ama Dablam. In neat symmetry, next year’s marathon will begin nearly 15 years to the day after Mr Donald’s crash. After 10 days of acclimatising to

the thin air, Mr Donald and about 150 runners will start from Everest Base Camp. During their undulating 42km run, they finish at Namche Bazaar about two kilometres below. The rocky route features many climbs, including a 523-metre rise. “I’m expecting it’s going to be hard. The last thing I want is to twist
my ankle on the rocks in the first 500 metres.” In the lead-up, Mr Donald hopes to raise $50,000 for the Australian Himalayan Foundation. All funds go towards Nepalese earthquake victims and the ongoing rebuild. To donate, go to www.facebook. com/colinseverestmarathon

Finals race hots up By CAMERON HUTCHISON WINDY conditions played havoc with some games on the weekend. Olinda Ferny Creek and Healesville are battling it out in second and third position. Monbulk have a realistic chance to make the finals; and no more than next week when they take on WarburtonMillgrove, while fifth-place UpweyTecoma have to play ladder leaders Wandin. Division 2 is extremely tight, with all games next week affecting the ladder. Alexandra take on Seville which are playing for their season, but, likewise, Alexandra are flying and want to stay in the top three. It is probably Powelltown’s last chance and must get a win over Kinglake to keep their finals hopes alive. Yarra Glen need to come off the bye in good form as they host Yea, and can Yarra Junction be a thorn in the side of Gembrook three weeks out from finals. Division 1 Seniors Football Olinda Ferny Creek 15.19 (109) d Emerald 10.6 (66) Olinda hold onto second spot after a solid performance against Emerald on Saturday. Emerald started off really well, kicking five goals-to-four in the first and taking a five-point lead into the second quarter. Olinda were a bit shell-shocked; and even though they outscored Emerald in the second quarter, they only took a four-point lead into half-time. Olinda lifted a notch in the third, kicking 2.5 to 1.1 and 5.6 to 1.1 in the last quarter to win by 43 points. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: D. Rohrmann (3 goals), M. Hottes, N. Broomhall (3 goals), D. Wilson (1 goal), B. Shaw, N. Keegan (2 goals) Emerald Best: M. Steer, L. McKenna (1 goal), C. Thomsen, P. White (1 goal), D. Volta, C. Jones (3 goals) Woori Yallock 22.13 (145) d Warburton Millgrove 2.3 (15) Warburton had a dirty day out when they could only manage two goals against a rampaging Woori Yallock. Woori Yallock are only one game from second spot and are finding form when it counts. Warburton have had a season of ups and downs, and this is one of the downers. They failed to kick a goal in the first while Woori Yallock put their stamp on the game with an impressive 7.2. Warburton were never going to make up the difference as they had no one that could match it with Marcus Baxter (8 goals) or Ben Monkhorst (5 goals). Woori led at half-time by 59 points and extended that lead to 85 points at three quarter time as Woori run out 130-point winners. Woori Yallock Best: M. Lowe (1 goal), M. Baxter (8 goals), B. Mc Donald, J. Adams (1 goal), B. Monkhorst (5 goals), M. Batten Warburton Millgrove Best: T. Walker, T. McKail, L. James, P. Sharp, J. Mullan, T. Marr Monbulk 19.13 (127) d Upwey Tecoma 12.14 (86) Monbulk have kept their finals
hopes alive with a confidence boosting win over fifth-placed Upwey-Tecoma. With Upwey playing Wandin and Monbulk playing Warburton next week, it should be game on for fifth spot for the last three rounds. Monbulk got the early break in the first by kicking 5.6 to 2.3, with another six goals-to-five in the second having them, going into the main break with a 12-point advantage. Michael Langworthy was causing issues for Upwey up forward, while Daniel Ward proved a good foil for him. Monbulk came out and piled on seven goals-to-two to put the game out of Upwey’s reach in the third quarter. The last quarter was pretty much keepings off for the whole 30 minutes with the hosts securing an impressive 41-point win. Monbulk Best: C. Sharpe (2 goals), M. Langworthy (6 goals), J. Mohr (1 goal), J. Rak, P. Berge (1 goal), S. Williams (1 goal) Upwey-Tecoma Best: J. Hackett (2 goals), I. Krijt, T. Robinson (2 goals), B. Oates, J. Hevern, B. Sheppard (2 goals) Healesville 17.16 (118) d Mount Evelyn 13.11 (89) This game was looming to be a long day for Mount Evelyn, but they managed to almost kick their entire score from last week in the first quarter. Healesville had nine scoring shotsto-three in the first, but were a bit wasteful and only took a 16-point lead into the second quarter. Mount Evelyn certainly had something to prove after last week, and took Healesville by complete surprise in the second with good teamwork and direct avenues to goal. They kicked 6.3 to 3.5 to even the ledger at half time. Robbie Hartfield and Simon Gordon were proving to be major targets for the respective sides. Mount Evelyn really did some soul searching at half-time as they came out and continued the type of play they displayed in the second quarter, outscoring Healesville by six points to take a lead into the last. The question was: ‘Could they maintain it?’ The last quarter was a bit of a seesaw game for the first 15 minutes, but then Healesville’s young brigade kicked into gear, helping them kick six goals-to-nil in the last to secure a 29-point win. Healesville Best: S. Gordon (6 goals), A. Hamer (1 goal), N. Mende, B. Murphy, A. Davies (2 goals), C. Warren Mount Evelyn Best: R. Cowan (2 goal), R. Hartfield (5 goals), L. Francis, G. Gosland, D. Kift, S. Martin Wandin 14.11 (95) d Belgrave 12.18 (90) Many would not have tipped such a close game especially at the Kennel. These two battled it out all day, with Belgrave leading for most of the day. Wandin had the slimmest of leads at quarter time but the only time they held the lead was at final siren time. Belgrave were wasteful in front of goal in the second, kicking 3.7 to 3.2. Their lead could have been possibly uncatchable if they had kicked straight. They extended their lead to eight points at three quarter time, but again
Olinda Ferny Creek did the job against Emerald over the weekend. 157474 Picture: JAY TRACY were not capitalising on their forward 50 entries kicking 4.6 to 4.2. However, Wandin were finally able to get it going through the aid of Scott Dwyer in the last, kicking 4.3-to-2.2 to secure a thrilling five-point win. Wandin Best: M. Fowkes, J. Glenn (4 goals), J. Myers (1 goal), M. Shanks (1 goal), S. Dwyer (5 goals), J. Ladner Belgrave Best: R. Matthews, J. Brown, T. Stubley (3 goals), P. Gough (1 goal), J. Pearce, B. Fitzgerald (1 goal) Division 2 Seniors Football Powelltown 11.13 (79) d Gembrook Cockatoo 10.8 (68) Powelltown continue on their hunt for finals by taking the scalp of Gembrook on Saturday. They are now sitting equal fifth and have been very good over the last couple of weeks. Gembrook have dropped to fourth, with only one game away from top spot. Gembrook hit the scoreboard in the first, taking a 12-point lead at quartertime. Powelltown swung into gear in the second, kicking 4.4-to-2.4 to even the score at 5.7 each at half-time. However, Gembrook were able to hold them scoreless in the third, putting four goals on the board in the third quarter to lead by 24 points at threequarter time. Despite the 24-point lead heading into the third quarter, Powelltown were able to dig deep in the last, kicking 6.6to-1.1 to come away with an 11-point win. Powelltown Best: Jason Walker, J. Moore, N. Moody (1 goal), Jonnie Walker (1 goal), G. Newing, S. Sanders Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: A. Shipp (4 goals), C. Vernal, S. Martin, P. Gramc (3 goals), M. Maddison, A. Mitchell Kinglake 19.22 (136) d Thornton Eildon 5.7 (37) Another tough day at the office for Thornton on Saturday. They were held scoreless in the first, while Kinglake piled on 9.8 to take a 62-point lead into the second quarter. Thornton fought back in the second, kicking 3.2 to 2.3 to outscore Kinglake. Robert Mallison and Luke Forsyth were certainly making it difficult for Thornton to defend with Kinglake kicking 6.7 in the third with Kinglake to defeat Thornton Eildon by 99 points.
Kinglake Best: R. Mallison (6 goals), A. Whelan (1 goal), E. Robinson (1 goal), B. Robinson (1 goal), J. Harward, L. Forsyth (5 goals) Thornton Eildon Best: J. Strachan, A. Reddan (1 goal), Z. King, B. Musgrove, R. Andrews (1 goal), J. Mitchell Yarra Junction 17.16 (118) d Seville 11.12 (78) Yarra Junction have pushed Seville down to sixth on the ladder and only hanging on slimly to a final five berth. Seville had a 20-point lead into the second quarter after kicking six goals to two in the first. Scoring shots were the same, but Yarra Junction wasted their opportunities. Seville stopped in their tracks in the second while the Eagles kicked 6.3 to take a slim lead of four points into the main break. Yarra Junction really turned it on after the half-time break, kicking 9.8 to get a win of 40 points. Yarra Junction Best: W. Robertson (1 goal), J. Black, B. Wragg, E. Wadsworth, T. Wheeler (5 goals), T. Hancock (1 goal) Seville Best: J. Neal (2 goals), J. Bourke-Finn, L. O’Keefe, A. Wind, A. Mammoliti, G. Teunissen Alexandra 8.6 (54) d Yea 6.10 (46) Alexandra have jumped to equal top of the ladder, but sit third on percentage after a big win over Yea. Yea sit fifth and in a very precarious position. Alexandra continued on their good form from last week, kicking four straight in the first to Yea’s three behinds. Alexandra looked on from the outset and Yea had no answers. They did manage to keep Alexandra to 1.5 to their one goal in the second, but it was not enough to make any inroads to Alexandra’s time. They outscored them in the third, kicking 2.3-to one-goal, but the lead was still 17 points at three- quarter time. Alexandra again was outscored in the last quarter by 10 points, but the damage was done early and Alexandra hung on to secure an eight-point win. Alexandra Best: S. Heveren, J. Purcell, S. Handicap racing for soft ground starters
‘Deano’ was on song
By JAMIE STRUDLEY
By DENNIS FULLER
YARRA Ranges Athletics annual Handicap Cross Country was held in Coldstream on Saturday morning. The clear skies betrayed the very soft ground from the rain during the week, but that didn’t stop runners from racing hard. The unique racing format saw runners given a starting time based on their performances from races during the season. Club handicappers worked hard to give all athletes the chance to be first across the finish-line. The early starters ran strongly to try and hold off the fast finishing back markers, who had a rare chance to chase the field. The rotunda on the hill in Margaret Lewis Reserve was a popular spot for spectators to watch the races unfold and to provide the customary enthusiastic cheers for all runners. Event place getters were: Under 6s Girls 500m: 1st Charlotte Spiteri, 2nd Maddie Cannon, 3rd Sinead Willey Under 6s Boys 500m: 1st Sam Laven, 2nd Mathew Tartaglia Under 7 and 8s Girls 1000m: 1st Kaylah Cannon, 2nd Stephanie Van Bemmel,
PAR was the game set for the day at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with fog, then a sunny but windy day. The wind seemed to affect those playing poorly more than those playing well. Strange, that phenomenon! When all the cards were collated, counted and scrutinised by those with furrowed brow, the best score placed on top, it evolved that captain Dean Shan-

non (15) led the way to the finish line with +2 against his name. B Grade saw some diabolic scores with Philip Crossley (20) standing above the dross with +1 against his name and the smug countenance of a winner. Ross Martin (12) was the only other player to better his handicap with +1 while Peter Clowes (14) and John Keys (17) both played to their handicaps. Ken Hill was nearest the pin on the 4th and the 12th, Peter
Glasscock the 7th, Ross Martin the 13th and Graham White slipped the pro pin cash into his purse on the 18th. The longest drive on the first was won by Dean Shannon. In match-play championship matches, Peter Jones beat last year’s champion Ian Scott 7/5 and Dave Aitken downed Brian McCoy 3/1. Leanne Morison was so far ahead in the ladies’ comp at the finish line, with the others not
even in sight. Wednesday’s Off and Faded Golf (OFG) was a stableford event with some advantages on the putting surface which produced drastically inflated numbers ... in most cases. L. Morison finished with 50 points to head the field while M. Fuller and J. Piggott both scoring 44. Next Saturday: members roll up to challenge for the VGL August monthly medal.
Fantastic way to finish the year of play THIS round was the final for Under 9s and 10s as they are noncompetitive divisions. It has been a terrific year for the junior juniors and with a marked improvement in both skills and confidence for the players. All five competitive teams have made the finals with the 12Bs and 14Bs finishing on top of the ladder and enjoying a wellearned rest for the first week of the finals. The 9Bs had a fantastic way to finish the year out at Gembrook. The team moved the ball well and was able to run and gain plenty of ground. The goals flowed freely as the players applied pressure when they needed to defend. It’s been a lot of fun to see improvement and confidence within
this team which is very satisfying. Awards: B. Downey, T. Vincent, J. Cotter, A. Dennis-Moore, Xavier, E. Knight, K. Sutton, D. English, J. Sangster. The 9As had beautiful conditions at Monbulk and all the kids raring to go. Tackling was again a feature and a strong finish to our season. Awards: J. Alridge, Y. Han, A. Rayner, Z. Gates, M. Pithouse, Y. Sung, W. Hammond, J. Burton, W. Hughson, O. Blandthorn The 12Bs had their final home and away game which saw a determined team take to the field. Teamwork was on show with sharing of the footy and flow out of the back-line highlights. Goals: L. Smith (2), M. Blom, J. Hammond, T. McBride, J. Turpin Awards: N. Rutherford, M.
Blom, J. Wrigley, I. Hylton-Stewart, J. Blandthorn, J. DownardPengilly The Under 14Bs: Bye Under 10s finished off the year with another great performance. They came up against a tough opposition which ensured a hard contest was made. Awards: H. Dickson, C. Hooper, T. Kostich, Angerson, J. Abraham, J. Koelewyn, B. McDonald Under 12As came up against top-of-the-table Mount Eveyln, which was a great test to see where they were when coming into finals. A hard contest by both teams; the boys and Ruby need to take a lot away from playing in front and staying on an opposition player. Goals: J. Bolton Awards: M. Bateson, C. Passingham, T. Rogers, L. Bright, C.
Baker The Under 14As with six players out; they took in six 14Bs players to make up the numbers. The boys played fantastically well, playing their role and attacking the ball with ferocity. Goals: L. DeVisser, B. HarvieHowell, G. Ross Awards: S. Van Der Hulst, T. Taylor, B. Harvie, O. Davis, T. Sands The Under 16s experienced a fantastic day for footy. The boys had a bit of a slow start but played the rest of the game with great intensity and worked hard to move the ball how we trained all year long. Goals: H. Finlay (2), M. Dekker, R. Hawker, S. Motoring Toyota backing balloon bid A TOYOTA HiLux SR extra cab is on duty as official chase car, supporting intrepid Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov as he crosses Australia at the start of his bid to set a new world record for a non-stop solo hot-air balloon flight around the globe. Northam, a world-recognised hub for ballooning, around 50km northeast of Perth, was the launching point for Konyukhov’s Around-the-WorldOn-A-Roziere-Balloon expedition. The HiLux chase vehicle has already performed a critical role in support of this unique journey, transporting the gondola carrying gas burners and tanks for pre-launch tests and delivering equipment arriving from various countries. The Russian started his round-theworld air balloon flight on Tuesday, 12 July, and, despite low wind speed, the Toyota protected the balloon from premature lift-off courtesy of a direct wire-rope connection. While preparing for the ’roundthe-world flight, the HiLux was transformed into a full-on travelling base for testing the equipment installed on the world’s largest balloon, made especially for Konyukhov’s record attempt. Its generous load capacity allowed the HiLux to transport the gondola with burners on the roof in its trailer simultaneously with gas tanks for bed tests to the airfield. When free from testing, the Toyota
The Toyota Hilux will play an important role in the air balloon quest. 156963 HiLux delivered additional equipment that arrived continuously at the expedition camp from supply partners around the world. A 48 to 72-hour flight across Australia - the first stage of the aroundthe-world journey - is even more difficult due to the heavy air traffic over the continent. In case of an unexpected change in the wind direction or speed, Konyukhov will have to make quick decisions
on flight direction and level in order to stay away from major air routes. The Toyota HiLux’s unparalleled off-road performance will be critical for the land support team if they have to change the route on-the-fly, or follow the balloon over rough terrain. Tatiana Khalyavskaya, Marketing Manager, Toyota Motor Russia, said the HiLux would play an important role.
“After the take-off, Fedor will have to do the usual work: set a new world record on his own," she said. “Perhaps the most important thing to achieve success here is understanding that help is always near. “On land, he will be supported by friends, allies and the Toyota HiLux, a loyal partner that has been doing the usual work - giving confidence in all situations - for over a year now as well.
“We wish the legendary traveller luck and look forward to his successful return.“ The Morton air balloon, equipped with a navigation system and an autopilot, will fly over New Zealand, the Pacific Ocean, South America, the Atlantic Ocean, the southernmost tip of Africa and the Indian Ocean before returning to the west coast of Australia. During the journey, the gondola with the famous Russian traveller on board will cover 33,000km at a height of five to 10km. Considering the speed and enormous height of the flight, no-one can predict exactly what distance the HiLux will have to cover off-road to carry out its mission. The flight around the globe will be a true challenge for Konyukhov and all equipment used in the expedition. The pilot will spend two weeks in the enclosed space of the gondola where the mercury will not budge above four degrees compared with an ambient temperature as low as minus 60c. Konyukhov will wear an oxygen mask and eat freeze-dried rations for the entire flight. Restrictions on the airborne weight are so severe that even water supply is limited to 50 litres. Safety requirements preclude open flame inside the gondola, meaning the only heat source will be warm water heated on an electric cooker.
