A MAN is set to face multiple assault charges over an alleged incident during the Wandin and Healesville senior football match on Saturday, 23 July. Senior Constable Angelo Stylianou of Knox Police on Thursday, 4 August, confirmed a man had been arrested and questioned over the on-field incident, which left Wandin Bulldogs player Robbie Ross, 29, in need of surgery. Ross suffered multiple facial fractures and severe concussion. Sen-Constable Stylianou said the exact charges the man would face had not been determined yet, but he would receive a summons in the coming days. Earlier last week, police had launched an investigation and called for witnesses to the incident. General manager of AFL Yarra Ranges, Luke McCormick, said even with charges being laid, the league would continue their external investigation. Mr McCormick said the player could request an adjournment before an incident headed to the tribunal, in the case where charges or legal proceedings were involved. No request from the player has been made. Mr McCormick assured the community the AFL Yarra Ranges had a proud history of good conduct and that this was a once-off for the 2016 season. “The one positive from this is we are all talking about on-field violence not being acceptable, he said. “It’s not like days gone by, we don’t want to see this in our game. Mr McCormick said the league worked closely with clubs, players and umpires to ensure a safe environment for players. “We have absolute faith in our tribunal system, as well as our clubs and players to establish a positive culture, he said. “We’ve had a few incidences before the tribunal this year, mainly for abusive language and a few for striking, but nothing to this extent. “We have umpires who are a very professional unit, and players and clubs are constantly briefed and updated. Mr McCormick said there was no footage of the incident involving Ross. Ross had surgery on Friday, 29 July, and Mr McCormick believed he was recovering well, with talk that he may return later this year. For the record, Wandin won the match by 50 points. With both teams in premiership contention in 2016, it’s likely the two teams will meet at some stage during the finals series. A strong rivalry already exists between the two clubs, with Wandin defeating Healesville in last year’s senior grand final. Ross was listed among the best players for Wandin on that day.

Show off pets, and help ’em while you do By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS ANIMAL Aid in Coldstream is offering people the chance to show off their adorable pets while raising much-needed funds for their animal shelter. Entries are now open for submissions to the 2017 Animal Aid Calendar Photo Contest and give everyone’s pet the chance to be a calendar model. The donation for submitting a photo of your furry friend is $10 and you can submit as many photos as you like. Each submission starts off your photo with 10 votes and each subsequent vote from anyone in the public is just $1. The 13 photos that receive the most votes will become the featured photos for the calendar, with the most voted for photo overall to also appear on the calendar’s cover. Every pet will have the chance to be in the calendar, with those missing out on feature photos being included in a collage page within the calendar.
1236866-CB32-16
All donations to animal aid are tax deductible and all money raised through donations and calendar sales will go towards helping homeless and distressed animals. “Animal Aid cares for around 6000 animals each year, giving every one of them the opportunity of a second chance by finding a loving, safe home,” fund-raising manager for Animal Aid Carolyn Moorshead said. “Receiving no government funding to operate, the organisation depends on the generosity and support of the broader community.” Ms Moorshead said the calendar fund-raiser gave everyone a chance to lend a helping hand to the animal shelter. “It is easy to enter and even if someone doesn’t have a pet they can still support us by voting for one of the entries,” she said. Entries for the calendar will be accepted until midnight Sunday 14 August and can be submitted online at www.my.360photocontest.com/AnimalAid.

Man sprayed in police pursuit A PAKENHAM man will face court later this year after being caught in a stolen car by hills police officers last week and trying to escape arrest. Monbulk police Leading Senior Constable Peter Edyvane told the Mail that Olinda and Monbulk Police were notified about a stolen car spotted at the Belgrave Railway Station at about 4pm on Tuesday 2 August. He said that when officers arrived at the scene, the driver, a 31-year-old man from the Pakenham area, tried to drive away and was intercepted by police, but refused to stop. An Olinda police officer then deployed spikes and punctured the car’s tyres, but the driver then reversed through the car park and swung the car around, mounting a kerb and hitting parked cars. Leading Sen Const Edyvane said the car’s windows broke during this time and officers sprayed the driver with capsicum and arrested him. He was charged with theft of a motor car, resisting arrest and numerous driving and traffic offences and remanded before appearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day, where he did not apply for bail. He has been further remanded to appear in court at a later date.
THE Victorian Government has announced Active Railway Signalling is to construct the second entrance at Lilydale Station which aims to make it safer and more convenient for locals and commuters. Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Shaune Leane said work will now begin in the coming months and open by the end of this year. Construction will include a new pedestrian crossing with automatic gates and bells to warn pedestrians of an approaching train. At the entrance announcement were, from back left to right, Vicki Setches and Shaun Leane MP, from middle are Heather McTaggart and Pam Vroland, and at the front are Peter Harris, Pam Gambrell, Jill Hennessy MP and Tom Munro. 157637
Hi-vis burglar not very bright BELGRAVE police are searching for a very visible burglar who forced his way into two Belgrave shops dressed in hi-vis clothing last week. Sergeant Paul Phillips said that between 9.3010pm on Monday 1 August, a man dressed in a high-visibility vest and baseball cap jemmied the front door to a business on Burwood Highway, Belgrave, and gained entry, but took nothing. Sgt Phillips said the man then entered a second Burwood Highway business by the same manner, and despite having a “good look around”, took nothing. He questioned the would-be thief’s clothing choice, in wearing fluorescent colours while breaking into businesses. “It’s a very strange thing to wear,” Sgt Phillips said. Anyone who may have spotted the man is asked to call Belgrave police on 9754 6677 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Ex-partner steps in A KALLISTA man is facing assault charges after a domestic dispute last week which saw a Tecoma man hospitalised with facial injuries.
Monbulk police Leading Senior Constable Peter Edyvane said police were called to a domestic dispute in Tecoma at 9pm on Tuesday, 2 August. He said a woman and her partner were having an argument, and that the woman’s ex-partner, a Kallista man, arrived at the address for an unrelated matter and intervened in the dispute. The other man was taken by ambulance to the Angliss Hospital with facial injuries, and the Kallista man has been charged with assault and is expected to front court at a later date.
Take it or someone else will RESIDENTS are being warned to leave valuables out of sight after an increase in thefts from cars in the Lilydale area. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Rod Newbery said there had been numerous thefts of electronic devices, including tablet computers, from the Lilydale area - particularly around the Lilydale Marketplace shopping centre.
He urged drivers to either take valuables with them when leaving their vehicle, even for short periods of time, or to put them out of sight to avoid opportunistic thefts. “Even if you’re just popping into a shop, take it with you or put it in the boot,” Sgt Newbery said.
Siege men face charges SIX men are set to face court after a siege in Mooroolbark last week, with one facing attempted murder charges over an aggravated burglary in Lilydale. At 9am on Wednesday, 3 August, police executed a warrant in Mooroolbark to arrest a 33-year-old man over an aggravated burglary in Lilydale last month. However, the man armed himself with a knife and refused to leave the Hayrick Lane property, resulting in a two-hour stand-off with police. The man, of no fixed address, was then capsicum sprayed and Tasered by police before being arrested and charged with two counts of at-

To sit or stand, a health dilemma of our times Body
watch Jerome Higgins
Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda
THERE is a new phenomenon hitting physio practices across the country, and you might be part of it. It’s called the ‘Since I’ve been using a standing desk at work my hurts’ phenomenon! OK maybe that’s an exaggeration, but just like Nintendo thumb from years ago, and iPad neck from not long ago, we are seeing a burst
of standing-related musculoskeletal and circulatory disorders related to prolonged standing in previously sitting workers. The research on using standing desks, rather than sitting all day, is mostly very positive. There are obvious benefits to improved metabolic rate, leading to reduced weight gain compared with sitting, less pressure on the lower back and a whole range of loosely associated wellbeing improvements from mood to cholesterol. However, anecdotally, we have seen a rise in overuse type conditions of the hip, knee and ankle and exacerbations of circulatory issues such as varicose veins from this current office trend.
When we walk for instance, our feet and lower limb movements have evolved to transfer weight economically across a range of joints, and the increased muscle use helps pump fluid throughout the body and back to the heart, thereby improving metabolic flow. When we stand for prolonged periods, there is an increase in metabolic rate compared to sitting, but the musculoskeletal and circulatory benefits are vastly reduced if a worker stands with uneven weightbearing (yes you, leaning on one leg!), stands with poor footwear or for long periods on hard surfaces, or stands for prolonged periods without movement. So, if you are experiencing dis-

comfort with your standing desk, don’t give up. Instead, try alternating postures every 30 minutes between sitting and standing, or even better, walking. Do focus on improving your core and postural strength - tell yourself to stand as tall as possible, activate your deep core muscles and position both feet firmly on the ground. Do wear supportive shoes and do stand on an anti-fatigue surface rather than a hard floor. And do seek treatment on stiff or sore hips and knees before they cause you to go back to sitting for good. Oh, and stop leaning on one leg when you stand!

SUPPORTERS of all-night public transport on weekends have reason to celebrate, after the Victorian Government announced a six-month extension of the trial. This extension will include the Belgrave line, which will continue to run through the summer and autumn, ensuring people out late or working late continue to have access to public transport on Friday and Saturday nights. Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday, 2 July, joined Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, and AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan in announcing the initiative. Ms Allan said it showed Victoria was a progressive state. “We’re the only state in the country that offers all-night public transport on weekends, and one of only two cities in the world to offer all-night transport across trains, trams and buses,” she said. “This six-month extension gives us a chance to properly assess the trial over a full year, and give certainty to event organisers and passengers.” Mr McLachlan encouraged football fans to make use of the extended services, which will now run right through to AFL grand final day.

‘Family’ is in film By PETER DOUGLAS
Emily and Martin will travel some rough terrain in their beloved car. 157600

Testing terrain rally for cancer By PETER DOUGLAS ADVENTUROUS duo Emily and Martin are putting their faith in a 30-year-old Ford Meteor to get them across some of Australia’s most testing terrain. After participating in a recent Shitbox Rally, the Monbulk couple enjoyed the experience so much they’ve signed up for the 2017 event, which aims to raise muchneeded funds for the Cancer Council. The challenging roads and tracks of Lake Eyre, Oodnadatta (via the Oodnadatta track), Alice Springs and Mount Isa are just some of the destinations along the chosen route from Adelaide to Cairns, which takes in 3800kms in just seven days. But Martin said the rally was a top event and he and Emily, who comprise team ‘Without a Paddle’, wouldn’t miss
the opportunity. “You meet some great people on the rally and develop lifelong relationships,” he said. “We first heard about it on Triple J and just wanted to become involved. “We previously completed the rally in an ED Falcon and were keen to go again.” Martin said the rally was not a race, but rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable, which was to drive cars worth $1000 or less across some of Australia’s most arduous roads. He believed they had just the car in which to achieve the feat. “We found it on eBay for $400 and all it had wrong was a blown head gasket,” he said. “It’s mechanically very good. “The previous owner is now deceased
and the car has sentimental value to the family. “They are pleased it’s going on an adventure.” Martin emphasised there is a serious side to their efforts, too. “Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another,” he said. “Whether it be parents, family, close friends ... cancer has touched us all.” The rally is one of the single biggest fund-raisers in Australia for the Cancer Council. To date, Martin and Emily have held raffles and barbecues to raise funds. To help the worthy cause, contact 0405 822 898, visit www.everydayhero.com. au, or check out the click-to-donate option on their Facebook page.
Sore Feet or Legs? Sore Feet or Legs? Call
A DARK passage in the history of Ferny Creek is being brought to life on the big screen. The documentary The Family is turning the heads of film critics after last week debuting at the Melbourne International Film Festival. The feature-length film focuses on the sect known as The Family, which operated mostly out of the Lake Eildon area and from a house on Belgrave-Ferny Creek Road throughout the ’60s and ’70s. Run by the charismatic Anne Hamilton-Byrne, the apocalyptic sect, to a large degree, was shut down after a police raid in the mid ’80s. Director Rosie Jones declined an offer to speak to the Mail but said efforts to bring the film to the Cameo Cinemas in Belgrave were being planned. During the week, Jones told Triple J’s Hack program that Hamilton-Byrne enjoyed huge influence. “The Family is a group of people who clustered around a very charismatic yoga teacher whose name is... Anne Hamilton Byrnes,” Ms Jones told presenter Tom Tilley. “She started a group called The Family with Raynor Johnson. “He gathered around Anne and himself a group of professional,
middle-class, intelligent and powerful people. They formed, really, the nucleus of the sect, but Anne was very much the guru. “She was beautiful, charismatic and, for a lot of people, she was a mother figure.” The documentary features some of the victims of the sect who were either born into the sect through members, or acquired through what were believed to be adoption scams. The children were isolated from the outside world and dressed identically. “They were blonde, they all looked the same; you know, they were trying to bring them up to be perfect and to be the people who would take over when the world collapsed,” Ms Jones said. The documentary says the children were also subjected to numerous abuses, including being beaten, starved and injected with the drug LSD. The documentary also explores the reach of The Family, which had properties in New York and the United Kingdom, as well as in Australia. Many of the survivors speak on the film and recall severe beatings. Ms Jones said she wanted to make the film to help shed light on the justice system and to explore why individuals are drawn into ideologies.

Letters Tania stands down I AM writing to you regarding my decision not to re-stand for Ranges Ward in the upcoming Cardinia Shire elections. I am hoping to spark some interest in community members to consider standing for election themselves and, therefore, seeking the information they will need with enough notice so they can do this. Cardinia Shire, the Victorian Local Governance Association, and the Municipal Association of Victoria, have candidate information sessions in the next few weeks, including on Tuesday, 23 August, and Tuesday, 13 September. For me, the time has come to put my energies back into my teaching career. I am proud of the work that I have done over the past four years and feel that I, and the council as a whole, have changed for the better due to our term. In particular, I am very proud of the following highlights (in no particular order): Being elected to a previously all-male council, where now nearly half of the councillors are female; Being integral in council’s strong stand on its planning gambling policy; Speaking at official openings and ceremonies, especially the Anzac Day services; Strongly advocating for the decrease in annual rates rises over the term of my office; Consistently being a strong link between community and council, regarding the thorough community consultation and finalisation of new Open Air Burning Policy 2016 (four years later!) I have really enjoyed my time on council and I am very thankful for the experience. Being a councillor is no easy job. But if representing your community is a strong calling in your life, please get informed over the next few weeks. All the best to you all. Cr Tania Baxter, Cardinia Shire (Ranges Ward).

Val’s keeping on I WOULD like to thank Wendy Lydall for her letter ‘Stay brave and true’ (Mail, 19 July), regarding the poison letter sent to me (‘Keep writing the wrongs’, Mail, 5 July).

MAIL reader Vivienne Burrows of Belgrave has submitted this photo of a little natural wonder. She said, This is a photo taken in our garden of a Silvereye, the tiniest bird I know of. Barely 10cm long, it darts around, rarely resting in view for a moment! It was good to catch it in full light. The Mail is asking all readers to submit their favourite images for this section. Tell us the story behind the image or any photographic techniques you may have tried. Simply email editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au. If I may, I would like to address some points. If that insidious letter had been sent to someone who probably doesn’t have the selfesteem that I have, they would’ve been crushed. The anger with which it was written beggars belief. If the object of this letter was to shut me up, I have been too long on this planet to be intimidated by such things. Over the years, there have been people who have disagreed with my sentiments. But they have said it to my face; sometimes over a coffee, which makes for a lively conversation. Back to the letter. I may look frail but you picked on the toughest old bird in Cockatoo.
Thankyou to the Mail for printing my letters over the years. I intend to keep them coming. Val Butler, Cockatoo.
Hub hubbub IT HAS been proposed to close all council hub buildings on Saturday from 23 July without any community consultation. After reporting the closure of VicRoads facilities last month, I knew this was not the last of it. Soon they will be closing hubs through the shire. There is a misperception the hubs are only for collecting rates, but they should have a wider emphasis than this. Plus books will no longer be able to sourced on weekends.
My take is that hubs with books should be open to 2pm on Saturdays, similar to City of Knox facilities. Obviously the number-crunchers are in control. Monbulk has just lost one of its major industries with possibly 100 jobs lost from the town; VicRoads has gone, so where does this leave Monbulk? In a hole. I am not going to talk about the town dying like Mr Coleman did recently, predicting more shop closures. We all should be positive. If council is serious about saving costs then they may need to look at closing Upwey’s facility, which is only a shopfront with no books available. Council needs to do some lateral thinking and at a public meeting tell the people what it has come up with. Bruce Johnson, Silvan.

Emotion of Ash Wednesday RETURNING to her former workplace – the Cockatoo kindergarten, which saved her life and the lives of some 300 other locals on Ash Wednesday – was an emotional experience for Iona Tilley. Ms Tilley was a teacher at the kindergarten when the fierce blaze ripped through the town. It was emotional for the bushfire survivor to return to the site where she almost lost her life. Nevertheless, it was heart-warming. The building that provided hundreds with shelter on Ash Wednesday in 1983 has been transformed into a historical memorial for all those affected, or lost. Importantly, it also functions as a bushfire education centre. Officially opened on Saturday, 30 July, the site pays tribute to the efforts of firefighters and other emergency services during the fires, and will educate visitors on how to protect themselves against the threat of bushfires. It was a relief to Ms Tilley to know the site would remain a functional landmark in the town. “The memories are always there,” she said. “They never go away. “It’s something that is a large part of your life. “It’s very good to see that it’s been returned to a state of love, instead of disrepair.” Amid the formalities on the opening day, survivors were seen embracing one another. For one, Ms Tilley was spotted catching up with Ina Jamieson, an assistant teacher at the kindergarten when the flames ripped through town. Firefighters were also spotted in the crowd, paying their respects to the hardworking members who did their best to salvage what they could. original concrete slab and 12-sided steel framework. It features memorial plaques, historical and bushfire education displays, artworks and a barbecue and shelter. A reflective garden is also being planned to showcase the flowering gum planted by the late Princess of Wales, and Prince of Wales, during their visit to the site in March 1983. Cardinia Shire Mayor, Jodie Owen, said the opening was a moment of reflection. “The event provided an opportunity to remember the terrible tragedy that unfolded on that Wednesday in February 1983, and the devastating fire that ripped through so many of our local communities,” she said. “But we must also look back with pride at the amazing bravery and resilience so many residents of Cockatoo demonstrated on that day and the aftermath that followed.” The kindergarten’s roof was badly damaged in the fires and the building stood unused for many years. In 2011, the local community lobbied for the building to be repaired and restored as a memorial site. Cr Owen acknowledged the Cockatoo community who campaigned with great passion for the preservation of the site. “It has been a long journey, but with the persistence of the Ash Wednesday Memorial Committee and the Cockatoo community, we are proud to be able to open this wonderful new building,” she said. “I will look forward to watching the building evolve, drawing together local history, information and memories as a true monument to this amazingly strong and connected community.” More than 300 buildings were destroyed and six lives were lost in the township on 16 February, 1983. The memorial centre was funded by the Australian Government ($500,000), Cardinia Council ($350,000), and the Victorian Heritage Restoration Fund ($100,000).

Eddies and Patsys out By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS WELL darlings, the Absolutely Fabulous Movie opened at Croydon Cinemas on Wednesday 3 August and a whole host of Eddies and Patsys turned out to watch the film. With bubbles and cocktails all round at George’s bar before and after the film, filmgoers celebrated the original Patsy and Eddie gracing the silver screen in truly Ab Fab Style. Croydon Cinemas general manager George Aleksiunas said it a great night for everyone involved. “Everyone had a really good time and based on what was said to me and comments on our Facebook page everyone had a great night,” he said. “We have had requests to stage more events like this because in Croydon there is nothing to do midweek.” Mr Aleksiunas said the event was such a huge success that they were looking to host more similar events in the future. The Mail was there to catch all the action of the Absolutely Fabulous premiere and you can view more photos from the night online at www.mailnewsgroup.com.au.

Brendan Fitzpatrick has recently and enthusiastically taken on the role of Principal at Gembrook Primary School and has been busy getting to know the school community and visiting local businesses, kindergartens and local organisations. Brendan lives locally in Emerald and commenced his new role on 11th July. He has already been involved in hosting a visit from students from Gembrook’s sister school in Kenshan Peiben in China which gave students at Gembrook a wonderful opportunity to engage in cultural exchange. Brendan is mightily impressed with Gembrook Primary School. ‘Gembrook Primary School’s motto is ‘A View to the Future’ and I am very proud to say that apart from the simply stunning views of the surrounding hills and the Great Dividing Range, the school really lives up to the motto, providing students with fantastic 21st century learning opportunities that focus on literacy, numeracy, science, citizenship and environmental and physical education. All necessary ingredients to succeed in a global society. I am very appreciative of the warm, supportive and friendly welcome I have received from students, staff, parents and the wider Gembrook community. I have a deep love of learning and I hold a firm belief that all students can learn, given outstanding teaching and learning opportunities that develop great relationships and target individual areas for improvement. I am absolutely committed to working alongside our community to provide every student with every opportunity to be the best they can be, socially, emotionally, academically and physically’. Brendan is also excited about the growth potential of the school with prep enrolments for 2017 already on the rise. Brendan is clearly passionate about Gembrook Primary School and is available for school tours for enrolments at any level. You can book a school tour with Brendan by phoning the school on 5968 1313.

Trish Enzinger - Principal
Mooroolbark Campus 16 Reay Road, Mooroolbark 9839 8800
My name is Trish Enzinger and I am very proud to be the Principal of Birmingham PS for the past thirteen years. It is the longest I have ever stayed at a school and I truly am passionate about our school community, the students, the teachers and the parents. We have had many achievements over the past decade or so, but our greatest achievement to date is to become an accredited member of CIS the Council of International Schools. For us this means we have reached a standard equal to that of many international schools, our teaching and learning, our resources, our policies and procedures, all meet the the 65 standards set down by CIS. We are very proud to be a member of such a high quality educational institution which has of course international recognition. Another string to our bow is our student exchange program, ISSE which stands for international school to school exchange. This has been an amazing program for our school in that the world comes to us!!! Our children get to know and understand different cultures and languages, and develop a tolerance and understanding which is much needed in our international community. We have travelled and received delegations from China, India, USA, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica and Malaysia. This is a very exciting program for our school. I am passionate about high level Literacy capabilities and developing in our students a curious nature and a love of learning. Our students at Birmingham believe in themselves, have a strong moral compass and achieve high academic standards, it is no surprise that I feel privileged to be the Principal of Birmingham, and hopefully for many more years to come.

Darren Trippett Since joining Yarra Hills Secondary College in 2012, College Principal Darren Trippett has overseen the largest transformation in the school’s 53 year history. Darren came to Yarra Hills with over 25 years’ experience, much of that in leadership at the acclaimed Vermont Secondary College. In 2007, Darren was individually recognised as a ‘High Performing Young Leader’ by Professor Brian Caldwell, former Dean of Education at the University of Melbourne, being chosen to represent Australia in the International Network for Educational Transformation, International Conference in Beijing, China. After initially assuming the Campus Principal role at the Mt Evelyn Campus, Darren soon moved into the position of College Principal, which he has held for the last three years. In his time at the helm, Yarra Hills has completed a $20 million rebuild of the Mooroolbark Campus, as well as significant improvements at Mt Evelyn. Along with this, a renewed focus on school values, aspirational goals and ground breaking online curriculum development has led to great interest in the school from the local community. Indicative Year 7 enrolments for 2017 are at the highest level since 2002, with similar demand for existing spots in other year levels. Darren says “I believe that we have a great deal to offer prospective families, and we are working hard to continue to improve in all areas to become the school of choice for the local community”. He says it is certainly challenging, but a very rewarding experience seeing the school transform under his guidance.
The school strives to engage all students and community members to be 21st century learners through the effective use of learning technologies and Google Apps for Education (G.A.F.E). Furthermore, the school has an Inquiry learning focus in learning areas of the curriculum including; History, Science, Geography, P.E and Health, Arts, Technologies and a range of General Capabilities.

Our children are at the centre of all that we do. St Paul’s Catholic Primary School has a strong commitment to providing a safe and harmonious school environment where successful relationships thrive. The strength lies in the close partnerships between students, staff, parents and the wider community which is highly valued to us all. We promote and develop positive and respectful relationships. The school motto is: ‘Love One Another’ and we act this out in a caring, cooperative, purposeful and success-oriented environment.
I have only been at the school since the start of 2016, I have felt very welcomed by the students,

Established in 1896, Mount Lilydale Mercy College is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year. Conducted in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy, the College has a long and proud history of educating young men and women, preparing them for a life beyond secondary schooling. From humble beginnings as a school for ladies, the College has evolved into a modern, co-educational establishment, and with a masterplan in place, will continue to provide quality education in a modern, dynamic environment for generations to come. Our community aims to foster justice, compassion, hope, and hospitality in the Mercy tradition and our extensive and inclusive academic and co-curricular programs encourage our students to broaden and develop their skills. We commit ourselves to the provision of a supportive environment where each student is encouraged to develop a love of God, a love of life, a love of others, and a love of learning. Students experience respect, self-worth and unconditional acceptance. I find one of the benefits of being Principal of Mount Lilydale Mercy College is seeing the inquisitive and excited young people commencing secondary school and witnessing their growth as they experience all that the College has to offer.

Time to check best friend fangs AUGUST is traditionally the month the pet industry focuses on the importance of dentistry and good oral hygiene. With over 80 per cent of dogs greater than four years of age, and 75 per cent of cats greater than four years of age, having some form of oral health problem, it is a good time to focus on this important health issue. Poor oral health can contribute to kidney, liver and heart disease. Plaque is an invisible film that forms over teeth
when bacteria accumulate between the gums and the teeth. Regular brushing is a really good way to keep pet’s teeth clean but requires special non-toxic pet toothpaste and a soft toothbrush or finger thimble brush. Another way to maintain good oral health is to give your pet raw bones frequently. Again, not all pets are suited to this, especially those prone to pancreatitis or those with sensitive stomachs.
Generally, the bigger the bone, the better it is for teeth cleaning. Small dogs and cats can have raw chicken wings/necks, 10-20kg dogs can have raw lamb shanks and dogs greater than20kg can have raw beef shanks/marrow bones. Alternatives to bones include prescription dry food, in-food additives like Norwegian cold sea algae extract Plaque Off, in-water additives like all natural Healthy Mouth and Prozyme and treats like Greenies.
If plaque build-up has progressed to thick tartar formation on the teeth, then dentistry will most likely be required under general anaesthetic. It is dangerous for the pet and painful to try to perform dentistry without anaesthesia. After the teeth have been professionally ultrasonically scaled and polished, a sealant coating can be applied (Sanos). Until the end of September, any dog or cat needing dentistry without extractions can receive the Sanos sealant for half price at Dandenong Ranges Veterinary Centre (saving over $85). Book in today for a ‘free’ nurse dental check to see how healthy your pet’s teeth are. For more information, contact (03) 9751 2999.

MARKET SCENE Dreams for sale at the market A Mail News Advertising Feature
BELGRAVE Big Dreams Market is fast gaining a reputation for the best market in the east. Simply, this is because there is plenty to see and do, as well as ample opportunity to grab a bargain. With a focus on quality handmade items, fair trade, sustainable crafts and fresh produce straight from the growers and producers – it provides something for everybody. Venture down to Belgrave early to see Tony at the sourdough bread stall, where he has delicious croissants and cakes. Then, grab a coffee served from the 1960s Franklin Caravan. Peruse the stalls, buy some seedlings for the garden, watch the buskers; then give the kids a jump on the bouncing castle or a play in the playground. Perhaps stay for lunch where you will find Indian street food, wood-fired pizza and various other purveyors of culinary delights. Walking through the stalls, you will be struck by the wonderful atmosphere of this dog-friendly market. The Big Dreams Market has evolved into an amazing community space, where young, old and furry friends commune and connect. The market has gained quite a reputation for its relaxed, friendly vibe. Still sounding like a star By PETER DOUGLAS GAINING the chance to interview a 1980s comedy legend was an opportunity I would never pass up. There wouldn’t be too many comedy fans of that era who haven’t heard of Michael Winslow, or at least his character Larvelle ‘Motor Mouth’ Jones from the acclaimed ‘Police Academy’ series. In layman’s terms, he’s the comedian known
as ‘Police Academy’s man of 10,000 voices’. Certainly, I grew up watching his movies and remember wondering ‘how on Earth did he make those sounds’. So, when I interviewed Winslow, you would think I’d have known to expect something out of the box. When I first accepted the call from Winslow’s US-based office, there was a noticeable time lag. Then, there were a series of beeps, buzzes and general sounds of electrical interference.
WHAT’S ON AT THE YORK
Eventually, I was told I’d reached the voicemail of Michael Winslow ... then there was the sound of a disconnection. ‘You’re bloody kidding me,’ I thought. ‘This interview had taken me weeks to organise and I was really looking forward to it. ‘What number am I meant to call him back on, anyway?’ Then, there were some further ‘interference’ noises and a voice saying, “Hi, it’s Michael here”. Like I said earlier, you would’ve thought I’d have seen this gag coming ... but nope. So, anyway, I composed myself and prepared to fire off some questions. I had done my research, jotted down some questions and felt like I had prepared reasonably well. Turns out I needn’t have bothered. I muttered something about Australia and that was it, Winslow was off into his own amazingly funny world and cracking ceaseless jokes. The gags featured everything from Skippy, to AC/DC and a Bon Scott impersonation that sounded like the great man himself was singing on the end of the line. He then pulled out an Angus Young guitar riff that would’ve had many Australian crowds chanting. But there’s no doubt Winslow has great affection for Australia and its collective sense of humour. “I often try out new material here and the audiences always seem to get it, which is pleasing for me,” he said. “It feels like a second home for me – I love the Australian crowds, they’re so chilled,” he said, before reeling off a spot-on Australian accent; “Let’s have a cold one, mate”. I asked him, what tips would he give to someone wanting to try out your sounds. “Don’t break your vocal cords trying out these things, you’ll end up paying Elton John or Robert Plant-type payouts trying to fix them,” he said. He did admit some of the sounds were quite
US comedian Michael Winslow. 157577 physically demanding, particularly the engine sounds. “But the diesel engines are way harder than petrol engines,” he said, before ripping out a Porsche engine, then a Jaguar. Apparently there’s a difference. The only moment in the interview where he wasn’t trying to make me laugh was when I asked about ’80s comedy and his present work. It was clear he still holds dear the work of that era, even the ‘questionable’ offerings. “Oh man, you’ve got to start with Full House, Spaceballs; there are just way too many good movies in the ’80s, it’s like a collection ... you can’t have just one,” he said “The ’80s was something special.” While known widely for his comedy routines and ‘Police Academy’ films, Winslow has been active in many different spaces. From creating his own voice apps, to appearing in both the ‘Simpsons’ and ‘Family Guy’, his work is still widely lapped up today. After I finished talking with Winslow, I must admit it felt strange. This was one of the best, but most confusing interviews I’ve conducted, which is why I’ve opted to write this article in the first person. To be honest, despite talking with Winslow for about 20 minutes, I’ve got no more real insight about his character than I did before ... just that he’s an exceptionally funny man. Michael Winslow will appear at the York on Lilydale on Friday 19 August. Tickets from www.yorkonlilydale.com.au. For more information, call 9736 4000.

Spock and Bones (Karl Urban), but Sofia Boutella steals the show as the feisty alien warrior Jaylah. The action scenes are fierce and visually stunning, but the film also recaptures the essence of the original TV series, with prominent themes of respect, strength in unity and the joys of technology and exploration. STAR Trek Beyond is a compelling and action-packed celebration of the show’s 50th anniversary. When the Enterprise is lured to a distant nebula and destroyed, the crew must fight for survival on a perilous planet and defeat the ruthless warlord Krall (Idris Elba). The best of the three re-booted Trek films, this series has finally gotten the formula right
under new director Justin Lin. For starters, Kirk (Chris Pine) is actually likeable in Beyond. Pine portrays a charismatic, humble leader, as opposed to the arrogant sociopath Kirk was in the 2009 Star Trek film. Beyond’s plot is sleek and efficient, with clear goals and obstacles, and is all the more suspenseful for its engaging, well-developed characters. Kirk’s moving friendship with Spock (Zachary Quinto) is subtly explored further, as is the adversarial bond between

Clarke hangs tough By PETER DOUGLAS SELBY Olympic cyclist Simon Clarke has stepped up for his country as teammate Richie Porte crashed out of the men’s road race on Sunday. After Porte’s fifth placing at the recent Tour de France, and a strong start from the team, the Australians were in a solid position before Porte’s crash on a descent in Rio, which resulted in a fractured scapula. However, it wasn’t all dire news for Clarke, who pushed on in place of Porte to finish in 25th place for the team. From four Australians, Clarke was the only rider to finish the race. Teammates Rohan Dennis and Scott Bowden had been doing a good job, but opted to cease riding midway through the race so they could concentrate on upcoming events. After his Olympics debut, Clarke told news.com.au he had been happy with his ride. “I’m still really happy with how I rode, I take pride in being a reliable rider and always performing to my best and I think today proved that,” Clarke said. There is no doubt Clarke would have felt the pain of Porte’s exit, with the pair sharing a unique bond. Clarke and Porte were penalised after an incident in last year’s Giro d’Italia, during which Porte had picked up a puncture. Despite being on opposing teams, Clarke offered his own front wheel to Porte, who had been performing well and was approaching the finish line. Although a gesture of good

Cyclist Simon Clarke with personal trainer Henry Yallah from Monbulk Aquatic Centre. 149720 sportsmanship, the move was deemed to be against the rules. Clarke’s feat to finish the race was all the more exceptional given
he was a last-minute call-up to the Australian team. He was selected as a replacement to cover for Simon Gerrans, who
had broken his collarbone while competing in the Tour de France. Clarke is the son of Yarra Ranges Shire councillor, Mike Clarke.
CARDINIA Shire Council hasn’t wasted time in replacing the contentious Emerald bus shelter. The old shelter was demolished and the replacement erected on Tuesday 2 August just days after a dispute over the original shelter seemed to have reached its conclusion with the council and Emerald Community House (ECH) reaching an agreement over the shelter’s future. The ECH had raised numerous concerns including confusion over whether it was the council or ECH that was responsible for the shelter’s maintenance, as well as whether posters, flyers and artwork displayed in the shelter were breaching laws. Throughout the dispute the council maintained that the shelter needed updating to meet community safety and disability compliance standards. As promised in the agreement, the replacement shelter is painted in a heritage cream colour, which is designed to match the colour scheme of the community house that is located to its rear. Cardinia shire said the 6am works were scheduled at the best time to avoid impact on commuters and patrons, and before morning peak traffic.

Upset wins and clouds By CAMERON HUTCHISON CLOUDY conditions but no rain had the competition turned upside down after some wins and losses over the weekend. Mount Evelyn bounced back from their loss, while Healesville endured a tough game against Emerald. Monbulk keep alive their finals hopes, while Upwey-Tecoma surprised Wandin with a two-point win and Olinda won in a low tight scoring game against Woori Yallock. Powelltown have made it tough for themselves, losing to Kinglake by four points after indirect kicking came back to bite. Alexandra share top spot with Kinglake after a solid win against Seville. Seville are still an outside chance to make the five. Yea now sit fifth after an impressive win against Yarra Glen which now find themselves sharing third spot with Gembrook-Cockatoo after they had a good win over Yarra Junction. Meanwhile, things heat up again next week when Olinda Ferny Creek play host to Healesville which will be a fight for top spot. Division 1 Seniors Football Mount Evelyn 12.17 (89) d Belgrave 9.16 (70) Mount Evelyn jumped out of the blocks with eight scoring shots to five and took a 13-point lead into quarter time. Indirect kicking caused headaches in the second, but were able to hold Belgrave to only two points while kicking 1.7 to increase their lead to to 24 points at the main break. Mount Evelyn were able to get their possession game going in the third, kicking 5.3 to 2.5 in the third to take a lead of 40 points into the last quarter. Belgrave mounted challenges to Mount Evelyn in the last quarter kicking 6.5 to 3.2, but left their run too late with Mount Evelyn securing a 19-point win. Mount Evelyn Best: G. Gosland, M. Sheehan, D. Kift, L. Francis, A. Chalkley, C. Carmody (2 goals) Belgrave Best: M. Puts, J. Brown (1 goal), P. Gough (1 goal), T. Marks, D. Bilston, E. Clasby Healesville 14.19 (103) d Emerald 11.7 (73) Healesville were never really challenged by Emerald but the Emerald camp would be reasonably happy with their performance on Saturday. Healesville started off brightly of the two teams kicking 2.6 to 1.1 to have an 11-point lead heading into the second quarter. Healesville had the ascendancy in the second quarter, kicking 7.3 to 2.1 to take a 44-point lead at half-time. Emerald outscored Healesville in the third, kicking 4.2 to 3.5 and 4.3 to 2.4 in the last quarter. However, despite outscoring the hosts in the second half, Healesville were able to secure a comfortable 30-point win over Emerald at the Don Road Complex on Saturday. Healesville Best: N. Mende, S. Gordon (2 goals), A. Davies (1 goal), B. Murphy, J. Nugent, S. Donkin Emerald Best: L. Joiner, B. Moloney (4 goals), L. Sheppard, N. Jansen (3 goals), A. Davy, M. Thomas
Monbulk 18.10 (118) d Warburton Millgrove 14.11 (95) Monbulk have kept their finals hopes alive with a good come-frombehind win on Saturday. Warburton were on fire in the first, kicking 6.4 to 3.2 to take a handy 20-point lead into the second quarter. Monbulk had a minor win in the second quarter, kicking 3.2 to 2.4 to reduce the margin to 16 points at halftime. Andrew White was causing problems for Monbulk up forward and would need to shuffle their defence around to be able to make a difference in the last half. Monbulk put out the challenge in the third, kicking 5.3 to 4.1 to keep chipping away at Warburton's lead with Warburton only holding a twogoal lead, heading into the last quarter. Monbulk continued to dominate the contest in the last quarter, kicking 7.3 to 2.2 to come away with a confidence boosting 23-point win. Monbulk Best: S. Gough (4 goals), S. Williams (2 goals), D. Werts (2 goals), L. Jurey, B. Emmett (1 goal), S. McBride (2 goals) Warburton-Millgrove Best: T. Marr, T. McKail, A. White (6 goals), J. Iacono, P. Sharp, J. Mullan Upwey-Tecoma 20.8.128 d Wandin 18.18.126 This was a game for forwards; and with Dan Waters kicking nine and Michael Fowkes bagging seven, the crowd was not disappointed. Ladder leaders Wandin were able to hold an 18-point lead at quarter time with Wandin continuing to dominate in the second, kicking 6.4 to 4.2 to enhance their lead to 32 points at the main break. Despite Wandin dominating the first half, Upwey-Tecoma found their way into the match in the third quarter kicking 7.1 to 1.4 to take a one-point lead heading into the last. It was a real shoot out in the last; however, the Tigers were able to hold, kicking six straight goals to Wandin’s 5.5 to secure a thrilling two-point win in one of the upsets of the season. Upwey-Tecoma Best: J. Hackett (3 goals), I. Krijt (1 goal), K. Grenda, B. Duncan, D. Waters (9 goals), B. Oates (1 goal) Wandin Best: T. Merlino (1 goal), Jarrod Bayliss, M. Fowkes (7 goals), B. The first quarter was a close contest, with both teams having the same amount of scoring shots. However, the visitors were able to take a five-point lead heading into the second quarter. Olinda held Woori Yallock goalless in the second while increasing their lead to 19 points heading into the main break. Despite being scoreless in the second quarter, Woori Yallock were able to find their kicking boots in the third, outscoring Olinda by kicking four straight to Olinda’s 3.1, but were unable to string back-to-back goals with the visitors kicking three goals to Woori’s one in the last to secure a

Alexandra started off where they left off last week, kicking 5.3 to 2.2 and took a handy lead of 19 points in to the second quarter. Alexandra continued to dominate in the second quarter with another fivegoal quarter, extending their lead to 36 points at half-time. Seville outscored Alexandra in the third, but it was not enough to have any impact on the final result with another four goals by Alexandra in the last quarter seeing them secure a comprehensive 38-point win. Alexandra Best: J. Purcell, B. Norris (5 goals), S. Steiner (1 goal), B. Woollard (1 goal), J. Steyger, C. Heaslip Seville Best: T. Groen, J. Neal (4 goals), J. Wathen, J. Pignataro (5 goals), J. Wilson Kinglake 19.13 (127) d Powelltown 16.27 (123) Powelltown have shattered any chance of playing finals after their close four-goal loss to Kinglake on Saturday. Kinglake dominated the first quarter, kicking 5.4 to 1.7 to hold a 21-point lead heading into the second quarter. Despite Kinglake dominating the first quarter, Powelltown were able to find the big sticks in the second kicking 5.4 to 4.4 to reduce the margin down to 15 points. Powelltown continued their second quarter form in the third, kicking 5.8 to 4.1 to reduce the margin down to two points. Powelltown at this stage had 30 scoring shots to 22 and should have been well and truly in front. It was all down to who was going to be the most efficient in front of goal in the last and, as the scoreline shows, it was not Powelltown, with Kinglake kicking 5.8 to 6.4 to see them secure a thrilling four-point win. Kinglake Best: B. Robinson (1 goal), A. Whelan, R. Mallison, E. Rob-

Yarra Glen were able to get their running game going and the midfield was desperate to get the ball, kicking 5.3 to Yea’s 1.3 to give them a 24-point lead into the main break. Despite Yarra Glen dominating the second quarter, Yea were able to outscore Yarra Glen in the third, kicking 4.6 to 2.2 to reduce Yarra Glen’s lead to just seven points at three quarter time. Athletes going the distance to victory Shannon leaves the rest behind
By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics athletes travelled to Anglesea for the annual Ekiden relays over the weekend. The term ‘Ekiden’ originated in Japan, although the concept of a long distance relay race is not unique to any country. The first Ekiden race was run over three days between the old Japanese capital of Kyoto and the modern capital of Tokyo, a distance of 508km, to celebrate the anniversary of the moving of the capital to Tokyo. In the race, each runner on a team runs the distance from one ‘station to the next, and then hands off to the next runner. The 2016 season will see the continuation of the Ekiden relay to the XCR’16 series with Anglesea again playing host to this beautiful course and scenic terrain. Yarra Ranges Athletics had nine teams compete over a range of grades with exceptional performances from all our athletes. Highlights were the men’s Division 5 winning its grade and the Under 14s Boys with an awesome silver medal. Results Women Division 3, 5th: Veida Somerville 9.8km 45.34, Amanda Laven 7.9km 39.31, Amanda Branson 6.0km 26.10, Sienna Somerville 4.6km 23.20. THE August Monthly Medal was there for the taking at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with great climatic playing conditions, but the ground level golfing conditions slightly south of damp. The only person to play to his handicap was captain Dean Shannon (14) when his nett 70 was good enough to handle all challenges to win the medal. In B Grade, it was left to Philip Crossley (20) to hold up the sinking feeling a bit when his nett 74 headed the rest in a canter. Leigh Morison (17) and Ross Martin (12) both managed 73 while the rest were so far back that they could not be scrutinised by anything short of a powerful telescope. John Fisher was nearest the pin on the 4th, Peter Glasscock the 7th, Steve Town the 12th, Morison the 13th, Peter Jones won the pro pin on the 18th and Shannon showed his power for the longest drive on the 9th. Petunia Clowes played a blinder to just scrape home from an ultra-consistent Brianna McCoy in second place. Wednesday’s Openly Floppy Golf (OFG) was a stableford event where Petunia Clowes’ brother Peter, played like a champ for 45 points to win from Neil Whiteside on 39 and Moss Fuller a couple back on 37.

Motoring Put road danger in the bin AUSTRALIA is on track this year to equal the number of pedestrian fatalities recorded last year, which grew for the third consecutive year. The Australian Road Safety Federation (ARSF) has extended an initiative it hopes will reverse the statistics. Yarra Ranges residents are being urged to help make streets safer by applying ‘life saving’ stickers to their garbage wheelie bins. The large stickers, which feature life-size images of children stepping towards the road and speed limit signs, are designed to provide a strong visual reminder to motorists. The images are based on research which found that signs that depicted motion resulted in faster reaction times and increased vigilance. Use of the stickers in other Australian states has seen over 5000 distributed and applied to wheelie bins nationally. So powerful is the campaign, some councils are buying them in bulk to make available to residents. The ARSF now wants more residents in Victoria to get on board. ARSF chief executive officer, Russell White, said between January and May this year, 67 pedestrians were killed on Australian roads. “If trends continue, the number could reach or even exceed last year’s number of 165,” he said. “The ‘life saving’ sticker campaign provides a real-time reminder to motorists to reduce their speed.
‘Life saving’ stickers on wheelie bins may help to reverse damning statistics.157333 “If someone is exceeding the speed limit, we hope these stickers will prompt them to immediately slow down.
“Even small changes in vehicle speed can have a dramatic impact on stopping distances.” Of the 67 pedestrians killed so far
this year, seven were under 16 years of age. “We also know that the statistics show fatalities are higher on weekdays
when over 82 per cent of this year’s fatalities have been recorded,” Mr White said. “Victoria has recorded the second highest pedestrian fatality rate so far in 2016, accounting for over 25 per cent of deaths. “These are just the fatality rates. “There have been many more injured and even left with life-changing disabilities. “Our research tells us that for every fatality, there is between 20 and 30 injuries. “With the impact on families and friends, that’s thousands of lives shattered every year.” The Australian Road Safety Foundation launched the initiative in Queensland earlier this year as an education program. It makes the life-size stickers available for $10 each, plus postage. “We are also seeing councils and corporate organisations purchasing the stickers in bulk to save their constituents or customers postage costs and encourage local use,” he said. Residents interested in purchasing a sticker for their bin can contact the ARSF hotline on 1300 723 843 or email info@australianroadsafetyfoundation.com to arrange to purchase stickers. Prado scales the heights TOYOTA’S rugged yet refined LandCruiser Prado has topped 250,000 sales in Australia almost exactly 20 years after the first model was introduced here in 1996. Prado celebrates its 20th local anniversary this month after passing the quarter of a million sales landmark last month. Cumulative sales for Prado have now reached 250,857 vehicles, making Australia the fifth biggest market in the world for this vehicle. Only two other SUVs – both of which are Toyota vehicles – have posted more sales in this country: LandCruiser wagon and RAV4. Prado has been the bestselling vehicle against its direct
competitors in 13 years and runner-up six times. It has been the yearly top-seller among all SUVs on five occasions. It remains Australia’s bestselling large SUV so far this year, with the Toyota Kluger in second place. Prado’s success has lifted total sales of the “Cruiser” family in Australia beyond 950,000 vehicles along with almost 700,000 examples of the LandCruiser 70 and 200 Series and their predecessors. Toyota is Australia’s leading SUV brand, with sales rising 8.6 per cent so far this year to 31,754 vehicles – a lead of more than 9,000 sales over any other brand. Toyota Australia’s executive
director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the success of Prado over 20 years reflected the appeal of its spacious interior, car-like luxury and off-road prowess. “Prado excels at being tough, comfortable and reliable – above all, it is capable of handling everything from regular family duties to long-distance travel over rugged terrain," Mr Cramb said. An upgrade to the Prado range last year brought gains to performance, ease of driving, efficiency and cabin quietness. Employing Toyota’s latest GD series turbo-diesel engine, the Prado offers up to 450Nm of torque while delivering impressive fuel efficiency.
