Wayne’s world - former Kangaroo star speaks

■ Park pool may get a big boost ...

Pool in a bubble By Cam Lucadou-Wells Doveton’s under-utilised and frequently closed Pool in the Park needs a multi-million dollar upgrade to shore up its survival, say two Casey councillors. Wayne Smith and Rafal Kaplon, of two neighbouring wards, will request a Casey council report on feasible improvements such as a warm-air bubble to cover the heated Olympic pool and allow access during cooler days at the all-outdoor facility. Outside of summer, the centre - which boasts a suite of pools, a splash-pad area, two waterslides and abundant lawns - is closed. An upgrade of about $5-10 million - including a gymnasium, revamped change rooms and a hydrotherapy pool - could be enough to revitalise the centre, the councillors said. The proposal - with the help of state and federal funding - compares modestly to the $37-million Casey RACE aquatic centre in Cranbourne East, they argue. Greg McMahon, principal of the neighbouring Doveton College, said he was frustrated by the pool’s untapped potential. “Outside of school carnivals and 27-degreeplus days (during school terms), the pool is closed - even in summer. “We’re sitting next door to one of the prime resources in Doveton.

“We can’t get access to the pool.” Mr McMahon said Doveton College and Hallam Senior College had offered a “big vision” to Casey council, including to operate it themselves partly as an all-seasons high-performance training facility. It could also be used as an extension to Doveton College’s education, community health and activities programs for all ages from infants to adults, he said. “We already run 18 services at the college and we have run out of room.” Cr Smith, who has rebuffed moves in the past for the council to close the 40-year-plus pool, said the pool is well-maintained but dated. “We need to open it up for discussion. We haven’t done much to revamp it in recent years. “We’d never contemplate closing it down. The local schools would be so upset. “You’d be taking away the life blood of the Doveton community.” Cr Kaplon said the pool was also vital to residents in the nearby suburbs of Endeavour Hills and Hallam, but its summer numbers were small compared to the modern aquatic centres such as ARC and RACE. He said a revamp was crucial for the pool’s viability, citing the circa-1960s “Scout bush camp” change rooms. “It should remain in community hands.”

Tent prostitution charge By Cam Lucadou-Wells A heavily-pregnant homeless woman has been charged by police for allegedly prostituting herself in a tent on a residential nature strip in Dandenong. The 38-year-old mother of four was allegedly living in the tent with her partner for a fortnight in Scott Street before her arrest, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 8 August. The woman, who had a warrant for her arrest for failing to appear on bail, was arrested by police who assisted Greater Dandenong Council in clearing away the tent and rubbish strewn on the nature strip. The seven-month pregnant woman had failed to appear on bail multiple times and has had 31 warrants for her arrest, the bail hearing heard. Sergeant Len Patton of Springvale police told the court that he had concerns for the unborn

You’ve really hit rock “bottom if you’re living in a tent in Dandenong ... on a nature strip

- Magistrate Gerard Bryant baby’s welfare due to the expectant mother using heroin daily and performing sex for cash on a “regular” basis. The woman told the court she’d transferred onto methadone just before giving birth to her other children. “And they’re quite healthy,” she said. Defence lawyer John Buxton told the court that the woman was booked to begin a medical program specialising in treating heroin-addicted pregnant women with methadone in two days. He said a friend of the woman in Springvale

South had offered to take her in and transport her to medical appointments. “The fact is my client has been homeless for the past month and lives in a tent.” Magistrate Gerard Bryant commented: “You’ve really hit rock bottom if you’re living in a tent in Dandenong ... on a nature strip. “It really must be one of your lowest ebbs,” Mr Bryant said to the applicant. She was bailed to reside with the friend, subject to a night curfew and drug ban. Her partner was excluded from the house as part of the bail conditions. “You’re not to come back to Dandenong. That’s for your safety and your child’s safety,” Mr Bryant said. “In a perfect world, we don’t want you using drugs. It has a serious effect on your baby inside you.” The accused will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 August.

In Brief Groceries raid ends in bushes Balaclava-clad thieves attacked a man unloading groceries at his Hallam home and stole his car. Police said two men approached the victim in Albert Road about 3pm on Thursday 11 August and demanded the keys to his new Holden SS Commodore. They assaulted the victim and took the keys and car, which was found crashed into bushes beside the Belgrave-Hallam Road Monash Freeway on-ramp a short time later. The occupants fled the scene. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to minor injuries. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Cops probe armed driveway robbery A man armed with an iron bar threatened an Endeavour Hills resident as they got out of their car in their own driveway. The offender cornered the victim at their Lemont Street address on Thursday 4 August about 7.15pm and demanded the victim’s wallet and mobile phone. He fled on foot towards David Collins Drive. The Dog Squad was called to the scene, but no one was tracked.

Permit process that just clicks It’s a new digital age for Casey residents seeking a disabled parking permit. According to Casey Council, it’s an easier and faster experience - one they’re saying is an Aussie first. The council has introduced a new service which allows residents to apply for a disabled parking permit online with their doctor. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said what was an arduous task for some of the city’s most vulnerable residents had been made simple. “Previously, applying for a permit required obtaining a paper form from the council, completing it, visiting a doctor to get it signed off and then coming back to a council office to have the permit issued,” Cr Aziz said. The new digital process allows residents to visit their doctor and fill out the online form together, which is then automatically submitted to the council for consideration. The streamlined process is a part of the council’s Digital Casey Strategy. Madcap comedy crafted with care takes to the stage Budding playwrights at Gleneagles Secondary College have conceived a madcap comedy from scratch about the unexpected turns of a night of babysitting. Students from Years 8 to 11 wrote the script for Babysitter Wanted about babysitter Chase, who is somehow convinced to go find a lost friend in the city and take the baby-sat children with him.

Like the children leading the baby-sitters, so too the students were allowed to take the reins of the production in the spirit of “inclusive, studentled learning”. For the whole of term one, the school’s young bards workshopped their ideas, characters and storylines. They then chose songs as well as creating choreography and band arrangements for the show. The play stars Hannah Halton, Xenia Sanut,

Josh Di Salvatore, Rhianne McMahon, Kealy Fox and Tome Correia. Gleneagles’ performing arts staff Kirsty Wilson, Ashlea Thompson, Sarah Reynolds and Kirsty Letts gave assistance. Babysitter Wanted will be held at Hallam Senior College, Frawley Road Hallam from 7.30pm on 30 August, 31 August and 1 September. Tickets are $10 and bookings can be made on 9708 1319. 1202687-PB45-15

Janine Greening wants to ensure some of the most vulnerable in Australia’s society never get forgotten. Founder of the Forget Me Not Foundation and a Casey resident, Ms Greening has been an advocate for victims of crime since 2005 - and she is the reason behind Casey Council’s push for a Royal Commission to investigate the abuse and neglect of people in disability care. Councillor Amanda Stapledon, whose son Pete is looked after in disability care, seconded Ms Greening’s request in council, and the City of Casey will write to the Prime Minister and state premiers to seek their support for a Royal Commission. “There needs to be stronger legal protections for people with a disability, mandatory reporting and zero tolerance,” Cr Stapledon said. Ms Greening is known for speaking out after her mother was raped and murdered in front of her disabled brother in 2000, and is passionate about giving a voice to victims of crime. In light of a recent parliamentary inquiry into abuse in disability services, which made 49 recommendations for reform, Ms Greening said: “It’s the first time I’ve tried for a Royal Commission, but it is the right time. “We need to get it right because we’ve had so many inquiries into abuse in disability care and so many recommendations - it’s a waste of time, because nothing gets done,” she said. The inquiry found abuse in disability services is widespread in Victoria. The Family and Community Development Committee heard abuse took many forms, including neglect, physical and sexual assault and financial, verbal and emotional abuse. The committee heard physical violence towards people with a disability was normalised. It’s something Ms Greening has felt first-hand. Her brother, Peter, 62, who has been in care since their mother was murdered, has been assaulted in care. “I nearly lost Peter twice because of carers’ incompetence around medications,” Ms Greening said.

Cr Amanda Stapledon with her son Pete, 24. “The United Nations has human rights for disabilities - why are we allowed to have people being treated like this?” Cr Stapledon mirrored Ms Greening’s sentiments. “From a personal point of view I’ve had numerous friends whose children with a disability have suffered neglect, abuse and death of their children while in disability facilities and care. “I placed my son into respite on one occasion and they told me they couldn’t have him anymore. “One carer told me that feeding my son was like trying to feed a rattlesnake, that’s how little regard this person had for my son,” Cr Stapledon said. “In one instance one of my friends also from the Casey area had their son in care and when she visited him she saw he had severe bite marks

all over his body that had gone unreported and the response when she reported it wasn’t what it should be.” Ms Greening said an overarching, collective response such as a Royal Commission would be able to deliver a system that could be rolled out across Australia. “While these inquiries go on there are more unexplained deaths, more people are being abused and neglected in care,” she said. Holding back tears, Ms Greening said: “My mother before she died asked me to never forget my brother. “We have to make sure it’s a safe environment for people with a disability to be in – we owe it to them, to the ones that have suffered and the ones it’s happening to now, we owe it to them.”

MORNING MELODIES 2016

In the end, the thousands of state dollars put towards protecting Jesse Duncan-McGann’s life in disability care didn’t count for enough. Jesse choked to death in 2008 at 19 years of age after eating while unsupervised at Peninsula Access and Training Centre in Langwarrin. In 2010 coroner Peter White found that on the day Jesse choked he appeared to be happy and in good health. He ate his lunch while supervised but then later returned to the meals room. While staff were distracted by other clients, Jesse obtained food which he hurriedly ate alone. The coroner found he did not properly chew his food and choked as a result. Jesse was found lying unconscious on the floor and was resuscitated by paramedics, but two days later his life support was turned off. The Duncan-McGann family from Cranbourne cared for Jesse on weekends and after

hours and Jesse’s mother Deborah has since spoken of her anguish, pleading for improved training services for disability carers. Jesse’s grandmother Anita Duncan had worked in disability care for most of her life and now older brother Matthew McGann does too. Struggling to hold back tears, Matthew explained why he must keep Jesse’s legacy alive. Jesse was severely autistic and suffered with Asperger’s syndrome and attention deficit disorder and required 24/7 care. “Jesse was one of the most highly government funded clients in Victoria at the time,” Matthew said. “Jesse had no awareness of danger.“ Jesse had attended the centre for one and a half years, but six months before his death his level of care had been reduced from one-on-one, fulltime care. His family said they were not informed that his level of supervision had been changed. Anita Duncan said the centre had received ex-

tra funding from the government to provide oneon-one care for Jesse, but the family later found out it had stopped because Jesse had shown good behaviour. The coroner found that failure to ensure direct supervision of Jesse led to an increased risk of injury and contributed to his death. After Jesse’s tragic death, Matthew fought depression and even suicide. “I actually shut my heart down - losing Jesse was pretty tough on me,” he said. Matthew has worked in the field since 2013, starting out in disability day care in Cranbourne. He says abuse in different forms and levels still occurs. Matthew said he supported Forget Me Not Foundation founder Janine Greening’s call for a Royal Commission into abuse in disability care “100 per cent”. “Something needs to be done, there needs to be more awareness around these types of situations (in care) for other families,” Matthew said.

Tree bursts into a colourful bloom By Casey Neill Harmony Square visitors can make a wish on a crafty tree that’s grown through community contributions. Community installation artists Margaret Summerton and Robina Summers have joined forces to bring the Tree of Life into being. The white tree is bursting with flowers and butterflies and a growing collection of wishes. It represents the spirit of creativity within Greater Dandenong and will continue to bloom throughout Cultural Threads, which will run until Wednesday 31 August. “We design art installations where a variety of small pieces can be made by members of the community, from school children to adults and for all skill levels,” Ms Summers explained. “We then bring all these diverse pieces together to create an art installation – the larger the better.” The Wishing Tree trunk is made from marine cord and torn synthetic silk and satin. “It can be washed if it gets dirty – important when it’s white!” she said. Children at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Noble Park and Keysborough Primary School knitted chains for the trunk. “The knitted butterfly bodies were made by the Social Knitwork group,” Ms Summers said. “The flowers and more of the knitted chain were made by the Tamil Women’s Group. “The Open Door made the leaves. “The poppies at its base were part of the wonderful Poppies for Peace project that we worked on within the Dandenong community last year.” This was the second time the Summers and Summerton duo worked on Cultural Threads. “The last one involved the community making huge blankets to wrap around the pillars in Harmony Square,” Ms Summers said. “We also covered the bike racks and railings. There was lots of hugging of the pillars to go with the selfies that time.” The month-long Cultural Threads is building on its 2014 incarnation and celebrating textile art and cultural diversity. The City of Greater Dandenong-hosted event features knitting, crocheting, dyeing, weaving, needlepoint, yarn art and other skills.

Driver crashes while ‘asleep’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ice-using suspended driver told police he thought he fell asleep when he crashed into the back of a stationary vehicle on a Monash Freeway off-ramp, a court heard. Andrew Pierson, 21, - who had been previously convicted for suspended driving seven times - had crashed his car at unknown speed at the Heatherton Road overpass intersection about 6am on 16 October. Both cars required towing from the scene, the court heard. The force of the crash caused the victim’s vehicle to hit the car in front, police prosecutor Senior Constable Ryan Johnson told the court. Pierson allegedly told police at the time he didn’t know how the crash happened. “I wasn’t speeding ... I must have fallen asleep.” At the time, Pierson was on a suspended threemonth jail sentence for multiple counts of disqualified driving imposed in April 2015. He was also put on a community corrections order in December for two counts of driving suspended. Pierson’s lawyer told the court the accused, who was a heavy ice user at the time, had since “considerably” turned his life around, no longer had a car and abstained from all drug use.

Margaret Summerton and Robina Summers with The Wishing Tree. People of all ages and backgrounds are being guided by some of Australia’s most celebrated artists to forge connections, trade skills, share stories and interweave cultures. Intricate and colourful installations are adorning the municipality throughout Cultural Threads, which is a satellite event of Craft Victoria’s Craft Cubed Festival.

Under his CCO, the accused had completed about half of his unpaid work requirement, completed drug treatment and engaged with mentalhealth practitioners. He was now prioritising his family, particularly his two children, the court was told. The lawyer said Pierson’s “considerable efforts” to rehabilitate himself, his youth and the detriment to his family should spare him from jail - despite the suspended sentence hanging over his head. Magistrate Gerard Bryant said there was a community expectation for the suspended sentence to be restored. “The only thing that has saved you is your youth and that you seem to be proactive (in your rehabilitation).” Mr Bryant said the real challenge was for Pierson to maintain the effort, and to demonstrate to the court he was growing up. Pierson’s licence was disqualified for a further 12 months on top of its two-year cancellation. He was put on a further 12-month CCO including 100 hours of unpaid work and treatment programs and judicial monitoring. “Unless you can sustain the efforts you have made, you’re looking at a jail sentence,” Mr Bryant said. “You’re a long way from the finishing line. I hope you make it.”

Land sale helps fund Bunjil Place Casey Council intends to sell land in Narre Warren to reduce the amount of borrowed money for Bunjil Place. In accordance with the Local Government Act, the Casey Council has published its notice of intention to sell the land currently occupied by the Casey Lifestyle Centre and Percy Trewin Annexe (PTA) on the corner of the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and the Princes Highway.

Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the proposal would free up funds to be reinvested into securing land for future community infrastructure. “The council undertook an audit of its 3000 properties through its Property Strategy and identified that the land occupied by Casey Lifestyle Centre and PTA is now surplus to council’s needs and the market conditions are favourable to sell them.”

Crash capture driver charged An accused serial bail-dodger has been captured by police after crashing an allegedly stolen car and refusing a breath test in Endeavour Hills. Mother of three Tania Jayne Weatherley, of Endeavour Hills, who was facing at least 18 charges, was refused bail at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 8 August. Weatherley had allegedly crashed as she tried to drive around a vehicle stopped at a red light at a Heatherton Road intersection about 4.15pm on 3 August. Nominal informant Sergeant Kerrie Bourke of Dandenong police told the court there was “substantial” damage to both cars. When police arrived at the scene, Weatherley was allegedly unable to provide a driver’s licence and falsely identified herself using her sister’s name. She refused to answer questions, get out of the car or to go to a police station to provide a breath test, the court was told. The vehicle she drove was affixed with a number plate stolen from a car in Endeavour Hills the day before, Sgt Bourke said. She was later arrested at a caravan in Endeavour Hills. Another allegedly stolen car was parked outside with a number plate stolen from Reser-

voir a week earlier, the court was told. Weatherley had been on bail facing 18 charges laid by six different police officers at the time. Over the previous year, she was the subject of 24 arrest warrants for failing to appear in court while on bail. She had eight prior convictions for not turning up to court. Sgt Bourke told the court Weatherley was a self-confessed drinker of five litres of cask wine a day. The informant described the accused as “almost homeless”, given she lived in a damaged caravan without running water or plumbing. Weatherley, who represented herself, told the court she had borrowed the first vehicle for 15 minutes to get food. She told the court she’d been jailed for three months “not long ago”. “I’ve got three kids that need to see me home, and I had one not long ago. “I know I did the wrong thing. I can do harsh conditions - sign in daily at the police station and do breath tests.” Magistrate Gerard Bryant noted Weatherley had appeared to have breached her bail conditions of not driving and not drinking alcohol. Weatherley was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 August.

Building works require new permit The City of Casey has introduced a new permit for anyone planning to undertake building or demolition works in the region. Residents will now have to apply for an Asset Protection Permit prior to starting works. The council introduced the new local law in August, saying the new regulation will help to protect community infrastructure from damage. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the local law was

introduced to protect community assets such as footpaths, roads, nature strips, stormwater drains and vegetation from damage due to private building works. “Prior to commencing building or demolition work, an owner, builder or appointed contractor must apply for an Asset Protection Permit and pay a minimum security bond of $1000.“

Looking Back 100 years ago 27 July 1916 A Glimpse of France Part Three Through Young Australia’s eyes Letter from Private H W Garlick: ... On the farm is the young lady fighting, only in a different way. She has taken up the cudgels and may be seen driving and holding the single furrow plough, and most of the work is done by the old single-furrow. We are all touched by the reception we got form the inhabitants of the country through which we pass. Girls wave kisses (and we don’t like ‘em), children rush and ask for souvenirs, and the old folk wave...

councillors was “like naming them after apprentices instead of men entitled to long service leave”, Cr A Soutter claimed last week. Cr Soutter was speaking at the Springvale council meeting in support of his notice of motion to rescind a council committee decision to name district parks after Crs Luxford and Neil.

20 years ago 19 August 1996 Gun owners queue to hand in their weapons Early last week, Thomas Street, Dandenong, was dead. But on Thursday it exploded into life as hundreds of people queued to hand in newlybanned guns. About 280 people sat for up to four hours and received a cheque for their gun, which was crushed on the premises immediately. But many left the queue, deciding it would

be better to come back in a few weeks when the opening rush died. The hand-over took place in the old CES building. A spokesperson for the Firearm Reforms and Compensation Project said there was no hurry to hand in the guns as the amnesty and compensation program would operate for more than 12 months. The Dandenong office will be open on Thursday and Friday, 11am to 6pm, and Saturdays 10am to 4pm.

5 years ago 15 August 2011 How much is one sheep worth? The Springvale mechanic is suing the City of Greater Dandenong in the Supreme Court after officers ordered him to remove his beloved sheep, Baa, from his workshop.

Under a council law, livestock cannot be kept on less than a half hectare. If Mr Ho’s court bid fails it could cost him tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs, but that has not deterred him. As soon as you walk into Mr Ho’s Springvale workshop you can see who is really the boss. Baa has prime position on a mat next to Mr Ho’s desk in a spot where she can see out into the street. She bleats if someone she knows comes to the workshop gate while resident dog Chucky, which is blind with cataracts, barks at any strangers. Mr Ho bought Baa about 10 years ago as a way to keep the grass from getting too long at his Springvale home and his workshop next door. – Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Irritable foodie has had a gut full By Cam Lucadou-Wells Ever heard of FODMAP? Well, nor had the Dine Local correspondent until he plunged into a low fermentable oligo-saccharides, di-saccharides, mono-saccharides and polyols diet two weeks ago. Since trialling low-FODMAP, his roaring, irritable gut has been tamed but dining out has turned into a veritable minefield. After all, when you cut out fructose-rich fruits, lactose, wheat, rye, garlic, onions, certain sweet vegies and gaseous legumes like baked beans, what the hell is there left to eat? The other swirling questions were: how long will it take to get sick of quinoa and rice? How long can one endure rice-flake porridge for breakfast? What tastes good without onions or garlic? Or, as the correspondent’s son put it:

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL “What’s that mush?” “It is what it is, son,” came the reply. One still wasn’t sure while eating at a famed health-conscious restaurant with loads of vegan and gluten-free options that it was FODMAP friendly. Rather than blindly gorging on the exotic culinary delights of Melbourne’s south east, Dine Local sought some expert advice. Monash University’s Department of Gastroenterology is researching the low-FODMAP diet and has published a guide and app listing

Please sir, can I have some more ... rice-flakes porridge? 158000 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS friendly and unfriendly foods. It has particularly uninspiring advice on dining out for those with an adventurous palate. It recommends ignoring curries, soups or pasta dishes on the menu.

Instead, take a serve of plain meat or fish with either rice, rice noodles, baked potatoes, salads and steamed vegetables. At a pizza restaurant, hit the gluten-free bases. Alternatively try a Korean barbecue or a Japanese restaurant, the guide suggests. Cutting out most of the planet’s most spicy and unique offerings goes straight against the Dine Local philosophy. But oddly, bland food has never tasted better. Perhaps because the correspondent is suffering half-starvation when he faces his simplified meals. Or perhaps it’s a simple feeling of thanks from a sensitive gut that has endured a lifetime of ‘whatever goes’. One important note: if you’re afflicted by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis or any other chronic gut disruption, consult a dietician first before trialling the low-FODMAP diet.

A Devon Meadows business has been spared conviction after illegally dumping 2.4 tonnes of home-renovation rubbish. In July last year, Dan’s Diggers was paid $2100 to collect assorted rubbish – including carpet, plasterboards, a bathtub, timber frames and a door - from a Langwarrin address, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. The material was collected in a tip-top truck and then found dumped in Botanic Drive, Junction Village, on 3 August 2015. On inspection of the debris, Casey Council officers found a bank statement for ‘Harshan’ which led them to the accused business. Dan’s Diggers owner George Horvat told the court on 8 August that a worker had disobeyed his instructions to take the material to a landfill. “He was a drug addict just taking the money,” Mr Horvat said, adding that the financial position of his business was “not too good”. The council submitted for costs of $3215.11 –

including about $1650 for legal fees. Solicitor Chris Andrews, on behalf of Casey, said “serious general deterrence” was necessary due to rubbish dumping being a “huge problem”. Mr Andrews noted Dan’s Diggers - which had no prior convictions – had been paid $2100 for this job alone. Magistrate Sharon McRae said the $1400-plus clean-up costs claimed by Casey seemed expensive. “At the end of the day, there’s a large amount of rubbish in a public area. “We have to send a message that you can’t be doing it.” Dan’s Diggers faced a maximum of $70,000 for the offence. It was fined $1000 without conviction. Casey Council was awarded $2500 in costs. The council stated to Star News that it had issued more than $100,000 in fines for dumping in the past 18 months, but was spending more than $850,000 a year to collect and dispose 3000 tonnes of illegal rubbish.

Kids get a kick Doveton College’s expansive after-school program is keeping students’ bums on seats. Twelve months ago just 7 per cent of its students did sport, music, dance or other meaningful pursuits after school. Principal Greg McMahon said the figure was of real concern, since it was a significant predictor of students being engaged and successful in school. “We realised we needed to add a layer after school for our kids.” A year on, 200 students - 70 per cent of the school population - are taking part in a trailblazing array of after-school activities held at the college on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. The range includes Auskick, soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball, Pacifica dance, urban music, karate, film-making and an online cooking show. It’s run by a mixture of staff, parents and other adult volunteers. “That kind of engagement - with young ones, with parents - is huge,” Mr McMahon said. “We’ve found attendance has significantly improved. “We only allow them to go to the activities if they go to school.”

Few have lived as colourful a life as Ron Hunt. He is an Olympic wrestling hero and was 27 years undefeated as a Victoria Police wrestling champion. Ron, 87, began his wrestling career at the ripe old age of 13 at a Dandenong youth club. He competed in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, coming 15th overall in Greco-Roman and Freestyle wrestling under Rome’s blazing sun. The Dandenong Journal helped raise funds to pay for Ron’s £465 airfare to Rome. Two years earlier he was named the Australian Greco-Roman wrestling champion of the Light Heavyweight division after representing Victoria five times in the national titles. Ron’s incredible Olympic career was celebrated at his home at Kooweerup Regional Health Centre on Tuesday 9 August. When the Journal arrived to interview the champion sportsman, he was propped up in a chair next to his bed, dressed in his 1960s Olym-

pic wrestling dressing gown watching the action from the Rio Olympic Games. His eyes lit up when he saw his old Olympic torch, brought to the celebration event by his daughters Roslyn Peck, 60, and Christine Meyer, 63. Ahead of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Ron ran with the Olympic torch along Lower Dandenong Road in Braeside on 13 July. His daughter Roslyn laughed when she reflected that she had tried to keep up with her dad to take some photos but he, then aged 71, was just too fast. Ron served with Victoria Police from 1949 to 1987. He spent a lot of his time between Dandenong and Doveton police stations, keeping motorists safe on the roads as a senior constable in the Highway Patrol unit.

The agony and ecstasy of drugs By Georgia Westgarth Former ice addict Bianca Hawkins offers advice to those thinking of trying the drug - “you can’t hate yourself that bad to want to do ice - because that’s all it is, punishing yourself ”. “At the start ice gave me a feeling like no other, at the end it was an anti-anxiety medication,“ Bianca said. “It did the opposite to what it did in the beginning - I just needed it to survive.” Bianca is another star graduate of former drug dealer and addict Glenn Munso’s Youth YOU drug rehabilitation program and gym in Hallam. “Youth YOU gives you the tools to make decisions for yourself, its empowering,” she said. “I’ve been in rehab before and your choices get taken away from you, you’re locked away from the environment you are used to and when you are released back into that environment drugs are the first thing you want to do. “With Glenn you have the choice, you either want to be there or you don’t.” Bianca started taking ecstasy at 15. By the time she was 19 she had graduated to the harder stuff crystal methamphetamine, or ice. Bianca was a dealer and a user. Debt soon accumulated and Bianca lost contact with her family and the drug became more like a medication than a bit of fun. “I paid for my habit by selling ice, most people that are addicted to ice are also dealers - they can, basically, use for free,” Bianca said. Bianca, who now lives with her parents, has had five goals in her 26 years. One goal was to help people - that’s why she worked in disability care before ice froze that future. For the next seven years from 19 years old to 15 months ago, Bianca had the same goal - to get off ice. She failed three times. That leaves just one last goal - to help others get off drugs for good through her course in life coaching. “When I went clean I put on 20 kilograms in

NEW HOMES & LAND

FIND A DESIGN TO LOVE WITH HOTONDO HOMES Making the commitment to purchase or build a new house is one of the largest financial decisions most people will make. When the time comes to choose the location and design of a future home it is natural that people find it is a daunting task. Local Hotondo Homes builders Tim van Dam and Scott Phillips advise new home buyers to take the time to research different builders, land offerings and home designs when selecting their new home. To help new home buyers with this decision, Hotondo Homes has released the new Home Navigator and Home Planner tools. The Home Navigator consists of a short quiz that will take buyers through some easy questions to define their family’s personality and lifestyle. It will then present them with at least six designs that cater to these needs and the tool provides the perfect way to find a design that they will not only love but will suit them and their family’s needs. Once buyers have found the design they love, the Home Planner tool gives them the freedom to take the design and turn it into an ideal home. They will be able to add an alfresco, extend a living area or create a dream wardrobe. Once the plan is finished it can be sent directly to a Hotondo Homes builder. Buyers can visit the Hotondo Homes website and start their building journey at hotondo.com.au. Alternatively, buyers can visit a Hotondo Homes builder at 22 Bald Hill Road, Pakenham, or 12 Flowerbloom Crescent, Berwick Waters, Clyde North.

31 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 15 August, 2016

It’s none of our business but… Parlez vous Journal News? Demand for the Journal News has gone international with members of the Hampton Park Centre of the Victorian School of Languages asking if the newspaper could also be printed in French. A member of the school contacted the News after Daniel Andrews visited last month but lamented that she had to go elsewhere to read the story in her mother tongue. She pointed out that the Cranbourne, Hampton Park and Dandenong areas have a high proportion of Francophiles who would enjoy reading news stories to brush up on their language skills. But the good news is that the Journal News is available in not only French but a wide variety of languages from Afrikaans to Zulu. Readers who view the News online with a Chrome browser only need to right click in the middle of the story’s text, select Translate To English then when the This Page Has Been

Translated box opens, click on Options and the rest of the instructions are easy to navigate. Talking of language problems, there was something lost in translation in a Dandenong courtroom recently. A Burmese interpreter - without qualifications - was reluctantly given the go-ahead to help an accused man on 8 August. The interpreter assured the judge that he’d worked at courts for years, but seemed all at sea and strangely silent during the trial. As the case meandered into lunchtime, the increasingly exasperated judge repeatedly prompted the interpreter to speak. She had noted earlier - and rather presciently - that there was a reason why interpreters required qualifications. “Sir, you just have to say what’s been said in court. If you can do that, that would be very helpful.”

At one stage the accused bypassed his aide and spoke his case to the judge himself in broken English. “Can we make a note on this?” the judge asked her clerk. Dandenong Library attracted almost 1 million visitors during the past financial year. The Springvale branch welcomed 315,424 people through its doors, the Monday 8 August, Greater Dandenong Council meeting heard. “It’s good to see that the numbers are increasing. We want people to educate themselves,” Cr Jim Memeti said. Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly suggested municipal rates would be fairer if they were income-based, rather than based on property value. At the Monday 8 August council meeting he said residents regularly complained that

rates were too high and many people were asset rich but income poor. Corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the State Government directed rates collection and that an income-based method could too easily be manipulated. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was sent back to the Stone Age when its computer systems crashed all day on Monday 8 August. As judges were forced to hand-write their sentences and orders, one quipped that they had gone back to “chisels and stone - and white-out”. Dandenong-based Wallara has bought Sages Cottage Farm to expand its training services for adults with different abilities. The non-profit organisation had been leasing the 38-acre property since 2013 and announced the purchase on Thursday 11 August.

Murder comedy actor hopes he never has to call curtains on his career By Cam Lucadou-Wells There’s no shortage of pratfalls in the upcoming Australian professional musical-theatre premiere of Curtains, says actor and assistant choreographer Darren Tyler. The Hallam performer spoke to Star News as its rehearsing cast was unpacking this complex comedic murder mystery which has been nominated for eight Tony Awards. It is set in Boston in 1959 on the opening night of a failing cowboy musical Robin Hood of the Old West. When its “terrible” leading lady is murdered during the curtain call, the play’s cast are all suspects. A theatre-loving detective Frank Cioffi then quarantines the theatre, tries to solve the case and to improve the show. Mr Tyler, who plays an ensemble character Randy Dexter, said Curtains’ ‘play within a play’ complexity could make it the most difficult of his

13 shows with The Production Company. Even so, rehearsals have proved to be a hoot with the show’s stars such as Simon Gleeson, Melissa Langton, John Wood and the dry, witty Colin Lane. Mr Tyler said he enjoyed working again with the company, especially reuniting for the sixth time with choreographer Dana Jolly and director Roger Hodgman. “We just finished Fiddler on the Roof together a couple of months ago in Melbourne and Sydney. They’re so very prepared, they’re a great team.” Mr Tyler started work as a dancer as a 16-yearold, having grown up in Endeavour Hills and trained at the Helen Alcock School of Dance in Hallam. When he grew up watching shows such as Cats with his parents, he didn’t realise the performers had the same sort of upbringing and training. “I had thought I could only be a dance teacher. I didn’t realise you could make a living doing shows.

“That’s what I wanted to do - to work as a performer.” He has been part of musicals since he was 21, including famous shows such as Cats, Saturday Night Fever and Miss Saigon. “I’ve loved doing musicals. I’ve never done a show I hated. “That’s to do with the cast. I’ve worked with really fun people.” His career highlight was touring nationally and overseas with Cats for two-and-a-half-years. He said he never got sick of the show or the cast and crew who became like family. He was just happy to be employed in the pursuit. On the cusp of his 40th birthday - a moment that won’t be lustily celebrated, he said - he said he hoped to continue in musicals “till the day I die”. Curtains is at the State Theatre, Arts Centre, Melbourne, on 20-28 August for a season of 10 performances. Tickets are available at Arts Centre, Melbourne, and Ticketmaster.

Darren Tyler has kicked on from a Hallam dance studio to a role in Broadway hit Curtains.

What lotto luck There is a wide selection of wigs available for loan in a variety of styles, lengths and colours. Winning the lotto in Endeavour Hills seems to be the done thing. A private syndicate from the area has won division one and other divisional prizes worth more than $418,000 in the weekend’s TattsLotto draw. It’s the sixth division one winning entry Endeavour Lotto has sold in recent years and owner Sandeep Kumar hopes to continue the winning streak. “This is very exciting news for our outlet and for our winning customers,” Mr Kumar said. The winning syndicate, who wish to remain anonymous, purchased their System 8 marked entry from Endeavour Lotto, Shop 53 at the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre. On hearing their luck the leader of the winning syndicate said it was great news for everyone. “This win means so many different things to different people in the group,” they said. “We’ve been playing together for many years, always using the same numbers.

“We originally chose the numbers together and each of the numbers is significant to members of the group for different reasons.” Throughout Australia, there were 10 entries that won a first division prize of $408,302.66 in the weekend’s TattsLotto draw. Along with the division one winning entry from Endeavour Hills, there were four other division one winning tickets sold in Victoria, one each in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, and two in Western Australia. The four Victorian division one winning entries were purchased from Robin Avenue Lotto in Norlane, Blackburn North Square Lotto Shop in Blackburn, Newcomb Lotto in Newcomb and Easter Hill Lotto in Fitzroy. The winning numbers in TattsLotto draw 3657, on Saturday 6 August, were 19, 31, 6, 15, 23 and 12, with the supplementary numbers 8 and 22.

Special hair care for cancer patients ST JOHN of God Berwick Hospital is proudly running its Community Wig Service within the Specialist Centre at Kangan Drive, Berwick. The service, launched in April 2016, is free of charge and available to anybody in the community who is suffering from cancer related hair loss. Currently, there is a wide selection of wigs available for loan in a variety of styles, lengths and colours. Patients are required to make an appointment by calling 8793 0550. During their visit, they will be greeted by one of the hospital’s fully trained volunteers who will assist in the selection and fitting of a suitable wig. The volunteers will also provide information about styling and wig care. The service has been funded through the very generous donations of many within the community, from individuals to larger fundraising groups. These funds have been used to set up the facility and will be used to purchase more wigs as demand requires, professionally sanitize the wigs after they are returned, maintain the Wig Room and consistently train new volunteers.

“The Community Wig Service has been developed to service the community. “Along with our Day Oncology Centre, which opened in March 2015, we are developing services which complement the expanding hospital and it’s increasing suite of specialties, to open next door at Kangan Drive in 2017. “We have spent a lot of time planning what we can offer to this community, which is rapidly growing, to ensure we meet their needs not only today but also in the future,” explained Lisa Evans, Director of Nursing. “The Community Wig Service also gives us an opportunity to add another dimension to our Day Oncology for our patients but also to reach out and assist all cancer patients in the region.” The Community Wig Service can be found at Level 1, St John of God Berwick Specialist Centre, Kangan Drive, Berwick. For further information visit www.sjog.org. au/berwick or call 8793 0550 for advice or an appointment. To donate to the Community Wig Service, please visit www.sjog.org.au/berwick

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Sisters face down sharks By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS It’s a bit of a toss-up what is worse - getting a root canal or plunging into a shark tank. Malvern entrepreneur Andrea Popovic barely raised a sweat facing a ‘shark tank’ - well, actually pitching her idea to a panel of business people - at the completion of a Casey-Cardinia tech-innovation forum on 2 August. Ms Popovic beat a competitive field of students and budding businesspeople with her concept for a portal - or online directory - for booking beauty services across Australia. By chance, she was invited to fill a vacancy in the competition at the last minute. She won a work space at the recently-opened Casey Cardinia Business Hub, with personalised mentoring, training and networking opportunities for 12 months. Already selling taekwondo gear in a homebased online business, Ms Popovic and her sister Tijuana were hoping to launch the portal online and as a phone app by October. She said the directory would help drive internet traffic to beauty specialists, many of whom were not effectively managing their websites or offering online bookings. “The model itself isn’t revolutionary. There are many online booking services like Uber and Airbnb. “A lot of people book for services online and related to the idea. Ms Popovic found the shark tank judges Mary Agius, Ray Keefe, Simon Maselli and Ron Raju were in a feeding frenzy for the idea. “It’s really good to get a fresh perspective from someone you can trust and getting a fresh set of ideas, Ms Popovic said. “They said, I was actually thinking too small by using just bootstrap funding. They said I could go further and seek a sponsor. One of the judges also suggested he could find

Andrea Popovic and her sister Tijuana move into Casey Cardinia Business Hub to develop their online beauty services portal. 157613 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS an app-builder for Ms Popovic at half her budgeted expectation. Casey mayor Sam Aziz was not deterred that the prize went to a non-Casey resident. He said Casey’s “aggressive strategy was to both attract business into the municipality as well as develop local talent. Both aims created local jobs, he said. The third annual Tech-Innovation and Entre-

preneur event featured leaders of innovation and growth in the region, like Berwick-based entrepreneurs Ron Weinzierl, of APT Advanced Manufacturing, and Tim Bowman who developed class creator, which schools use to assign children to classes. The Tech-Innovation and Entrepreneur Forum was followed up with a Business-to Business Expo on 11 August.

The car’s sh*t but is it a lemon? By Cam Lucadou-Wells If it looks like a lemon and is coloured like a lemon surely this 1986 ex-RACV service vehicle is a lemon. It’s just a pity that the mighty Meteor doesn’t come with a current RACV mechanic in tow as its owners Emily and Martin contemplate a 3800-kilometre odyssey from Adelaide to Cairns via the lonely expanses of central Australia. The Endeavour Hills couple picked up the station wagon – with just a couple of front dents and in need of a new head gasket – for a princely $600 to compete in next year’s cancer charity fundraiser Shitbox Rally. “The car runs a bit but not for a long time,” Emily said. Emily and Martin’s aptly-named Without A Paddle team will dress the car up as an RACV mobile fix-it van as they join the fun convoy of other sub-$1000 shitboxes through the Red Centre’s dusty roads in late May. About 10 per cent of the fleet are expected to make the finish line within a week. The couple will be packing spare fuel and a bevy of spare parts such as fan belts in the hope of easing their wagon into Cairns. “It’s usually the parts you don’t take that die, though,” Emily said. The other endurance component is keeping entertained while driving together 12 hours a day. There’s a CB radio to talk to other drivers and join in some good old-fashioned car-travel games to while away the hours. “There’s going to be times you run out of things to say,” Emily said. Emily and “Ford maniac” Martin are back for seconds after successfully completing this year’s rally from Mackay to Hobart in a 1993 ED Falcon. The Falcon only blew a hose, and a freezing LPG converter that required the couple to permanently turn on the heaters. Not a bad situation in Tasmania, but not a lot of fun as they drove in north Queensland. Along the way, mechanically minded Martin’s skills were put to use to help keep the seven other shitboxes in their squad on the road. His lofty reputation earned him the nick-

Emily and Martin practise their push-starts on their lemon Meteor. 157627 Picture: GARY SISSONS name ‘MacGyver’. The rally is a great chance to see far-flung parts of Australia, including travelling the fabled Oodnadatta Track, Emily said.

It was also a chance to pay tribute to their loved ones who have succumbed to cancer and raise funds for the Cancer Council. Besides that, this rally is a genuine challenge

to not be ‘without a paddle’ ... as the saying goes. To sponsor or donate to Without A Paddle, go to shitboxrallyau-2017.everydayhero.com/au/ without-a-paddle.

Kids mark to make a difference By Casey Neill Hundreds of hand-decorated bookmarks are showing support for asylum seekers in central Dandenong. Lonsdale Street’s Asylum Seeker Resources Centre (ASRC) adorned its front window with the artworks on Monday 8 August. Students from St Michael’s Grammar School in St Kilda decorated the bookmarks, donated a gold coin and gave up a book of their own. PRO{MERGING}ART curator Mish Eisen started the bookmark project in 2013. “I was living on the peninsula and I felt very far removed from the asylum seeker cause,” she said. Ms Eisen was managing a gallery in Sorrento. “I wanted to use art to show that art can make a difference,” she said. She approached 10 schools on the peninsula and six took part. About 500 students heard a presentation explaining what an asylum seeker was. “From that, the children then decorate a bookmark,” Ms Eisen said. Selected bookmarks were printed and sold to raise money to help children in detention. “The children also needed to bring a gold coin and a book from their own collection,” she said. “The bookmarks were placed in books and sent to children in detention. “In 2013 you could still access people in the detention centres. Since then it’s all closed down.” This year she partnered with just one school but still had about 500 participants, from Years 5 to 8. “We collected books and collected gold coins and judged the bookmarks,” Ms Eisen said. “This time the books are going to be distributed among the community, to families of former asylum seekers and refugees. “The funds this time are being donated towards text books and educational books for asylum seekers in the Dandenong office of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. “We’ve already raised about $500 in about two weeks.”

Mish Eisen with the bookmark display. 157692 Before creating their bookmarks, the students heard from a former Sudanese child soldier, an ASRC representative, and a young woman who fled Afghanistan and is now a journalist. “There was not a sound. These children were completely captivated and engaged,” Ms Eisen said. She said this year’s bookmarks featured more written messages, while those in previous years had been more graphic. “They were really thoughtful about the mes-

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS sages that they wanted to convey,” she said. “It’s an exhibition of bookmarks by Australian children for children in Australian detention centres. “Children don’t discriminate. They’re not about advocacy. They’re not engaged in political debate. “They’re very honest in their approach and their attitude. “We’ll keep doing it as long as there’s kids in detention.”

ASRC Dandenong acting manager and training co-ordinator Linda Perugini said the project was a lovely story of children working together towards a worthy cause. “We felt it was a beautiful way to demonstrate that there is a lot of public support for the asylum seeker cause,” she said. “We were also really touched that the children had put so much thought and effort into their work, and were sending such positive messages of hope.”

Firies step in to help hospital mate By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren CFA volunteer laid low in hospital by a flesh-eating bug has given whole-hearted thanks to the fire-fighting colleagues who gave his home a surprise makeover. Paul ‘Tiny’ Little was lost for words for much of his videoed tribute to his mates, who chipped in $400 to replace pickets on a gate as well as carrying out a day-long working bee at the Narre Warren South house. About 20 brigade members, led by captain Paul Hardy, painted inside most of the home, replaced damaged flyscreens, repaired sliding doors, took away junk to the tip and got power to the shed. Still in his Sandringham Hospital bed, Mr Little wrote on Facebook he was “blown away by the willingness of my CFA family to jump in without my knowledge”. “It’s so wonderful to have a group of volunteers who not only give up their time to help the com40 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 15 August, 2016

munity in times of need but to give up a glorious Sunday to make life easier for one of the family. “I know it’s a big effort and I am grateful to you all.” It gave a silver lining to Mr Little’s month of hell in hospital after innocuously cutting his knee while pulling up carpet at home. The cut, which was at the site of a knee replacement, got infected then attacked by a flesheating bug. Mr Little told Star News he’s been to 3000 callouts - including major bushfires and factory blazes - in his 20-year volunteering with CFA. He also works as an admin support officer at the CFA’s Dandenong regional headquarters. The brigade has chipped in with working bees and home-cooked meals for several members doing it tough in the past, he said. “If someone’s having a bad day, we try and make it better for them.”

A Casey man has claimed his house was trashed in retaliation for publicly releasing a sex video of his ex-partner, a court has heard. The 29-year-old self-employed carpenter pleaded guilty to distributing material contrary to community standards and acceptable conduct at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 8 August. He admitted to sending the mutually consensual sex video to two of his friends out of anger, and then contacting his ex-partner to apologise on 22 May. His lawyer said the accused had “exploded” when he found out his ex-partner had cheated on him for “extensive periods” during their two-year “on-and-off ” relationship. “He immediately regretted his decision. He was angry; he wanted to get back at her.” The lawyer said that after the incident, the man’s house was broken into and sustained $100,000 of damage to the extent that it was “unliveable”. Casey police were investigating the property damage, the court was told. The man was living at a new address while still paying a $1600 monthly mortgage on the trashed house plus $1500 a month for a factory to store his goods. “He has already suffered some form of punish-

ment,” the lawyer said. The man had also suffered post-traumatic stress disorder from another attack to his house in 2014. The man, who had never before fronted court, was also seeing a psychologist over his anger issues, his lawyer said. Magistrate Gerard Bryant retorted saying the submitted psychologist report didn’t address the accused’s offending. Mr Bryant questioned whether the man’s apology to his ex was genuine remorse or “akin to crocodile tears”. He said the man’s purpose was to shame his victim by sharing the “intimate” video with people not party to it. “That is unacceptable behaviour. We live in an age in which technology allows us to share information at the push of a button. “We need to ... stop and think of the consequences before we say or share something online that can be deeply hurtful.” Mr Bryant noted the accused’s plea of guilty and absence of prior convictions. The man was put on a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction. He was ordered to write a “heartfelt” apology to the victim, complete an anger management course and donate $300 to the court’s charitable fund.

Man chased and attacked for phone Attackers kicked a man in the face and stole his mobile phone in central Dandenong. The 33-year-old victim from Noble Park North was walking on Langhorne Street about 2.30am on Friday 5 August. When he turned into Walker Street, two men approached and struck up a conversation. Police said one asked the victim for his wallet.

The victim said he didn’t have one and ran away along Walker Street, onto Lonsdale Street. The men caught up with him, kicked him so he fell to the ground and then kicked him in the face, causing a small cut. Police said they stole his Samsung mobile phone and while they were distracted, the victim got up and ran away.

SPORT Schwass says your mind matters By Russell Bennett Wayne Schwass is many things to many people – a premiership hero, a team mate, a son, a father, a husband and a friend. He’s also a long-time sufferer of depression – a battle he kept secret, even from his family, since he was first diagnosed in August 1993. Schwass starred for North Melbourne and Sydney between 1988 and 2002 winning multiple club best-and-fairest awards, a premiership, and All Australian selection. He ventured out to the Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs recently to talk about his life in footy, but more importantly – and most passionately – he spoke from his heart about the battle of his life. Schwass, now a highly respected radio commentator on Triple M and presenter of Off The Bench TV, had his audience on the edge of their seats, despite a senior footy clash taking place just a few metres away. He spoke about how, between 2010 and 2014, the number of Australians lost to suicide more than doubled the national road toll. “We continue to invest, we continue to educate, we continue to challenge the community and individually about the importance of road safety and so we should,” he said. “(But) I can’t stand by, in my limited capacity with the lived experience and platform that I’ve got, and not do something about educating people about the issues of mental illness. “Those brave people (we’ve lost to suicide) have put up an incredible fight. “I’ve had many of those situations where I’ve thought about the same alternative – a decision that would have been permanent and irreversible. “I’m not proud to say that but I’ve been in that position many times. “We need to educate ourselves and we need to have open, non-judgemental conversations about mental illness.” Schwass spoke about how he hid his illness for more than a decade from everyone close to him - his friends, his family, his team mates, his coaches, his supporters. Everyone. “Why? Because I was petrified,” he said. “I was ashamed. “I felt that I was fundamentally weak and flawed because I was suffering from a mental illness. “I made a conscious decision every single day,

Former North Melbourne premiership star Wayne Schwass gave a passionate talk about mental illness in the south-east recently. 157828 from being diagnosed in August of 1993 at the age of 24, to sell my health at the expense of living a lie and pretending to everybody else that I was OK. “When you live with a mental illness and you’re not getting help, these things suck the life out of you. “Footy is hard enough when you’re fit and healthy and on top of the game, but put into that an insidious illness that is taking away your enjoyment, your self-worth, your confidence, your belief, your courage, your emotion. “I talk passionately, openly and honestly because I want people to know.

“If there’s anybody in the room dealing with this right now, or anybody who will deal with these illnesses moving forward, don’t wait 12 years. “Approach your emotional health the same way as we do physically.” Having sought help in 2005, Schwass has continued to shine a light on the mental health cause to mainstream Australia and is the founder of The Sunrise Foundation. Though it no longer operates, its aim was to deliver education programs addressing depression for young people.

Bells ring out as O’Keeffe celebrates latest winner Gerry O’Keeffe continued his remarkable run of success at Sandown Park on Thursday when Ring the Bell claimed the Victorian final of the National Distance Championship. Ring the Bell was sent to the boxes a $9 chance with TAB, and following a clean getaway from box 7, had assumed a rails position by the first turn behind early leaders Come on Fantasy and Son of Bekim. With odds-on favourite Burn One Down finding trouble and at the rear of the field, O’Keeffe confidence soared as the field passed the winning post for the first time. “I was very confident with a lap to go because he was on the rail in third and Ring the Bell is exceptionally strong,” said O’Keeffe following the race. “Come on Fantasy moved off the rail and Ring the Bell sailed through, and with Burn One Down getting a bit of backwash at the back of the field I thought ‘tonight’s our night’.” And it would prove to be, as Ring the Bell railed to the lead entering the back straight before powering to a seven length win over defending National Distance Champion Lady Toy in a slick 41.53. “The time is exceptional, faster than I thought he could run. “I will have to eat my words when I was saying that he’s a very handy mixed stake dog!” he said with a chuckle. O’Keeffe’s assessment was somewhat understated given Ring the Bell’s winning time was the 10th fastest time ever recorded over the distance, was his third win in a row and 14th overall, and now boasts more than $120,000 in prize money. Ring the Bell will now represent Victoria at

the National Distance Championship final - his fourth group 1 final – at Angle Park on Saturday 27 August. It is a race that Victoria has an outstanding re-

cord in, having won 24 of 47 editions. It also represents Ring the Bell’s best opportunity so far to break through at the highest level in a race that he looks perfectly suited for.

“The reason that I’m passionate about this issue is that I’ve had lived experience so I understand the impact of mental illness and the impact it has on individuals,” he said. “I also appreciate the impact that it has on those people caring for somebody who is living with a mental illness.” For help, or for more information, visit www. beyondblue.org.au, or search for ‘Mindfull Aus. Intake to grow future stars By David Nagel The AFL Academy has produced some of the all-time greats of the game and six Dandenong Stingrays now have the chance to follow in their esteemed footsteps. Under-16 star Sam Fletcher joins 2017 draft hopefuls Hunter Clark, Oscar Clavarino, Aaron Darling, Tom De Koning and Luke Davies-Uniacke in a 56-player intake that is guaranteed to produce some of the stars of tomorrow. Names like Luke Hodge, Shaun Burgoyne, Chris Judd, Joel Selwood, Patrick Dangerfield, Cyril Rioli and Lance Franklin have all learnt their craft through the academy which is now entering its 20th year. The 56 players will receive a NAB AFL Academy scholarship and under the guidance of AFL National Academy Head Coach Brenton Sanderson, will come together for accelerated AFL football and personal development camps to be held in Australia and overseas over the next 12 months. Player induction commenced this week with both squads conducting camps in Melbourne during September. AFL National and International Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan said the NAB AFL Academy has helped promote the code in Ireland, South Africa, Europe, New Zealand and the United States. 41 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 15 August, 2016

Fixtures review pushes basketball across state

Big boys show how its done The Keysborough Junior Football Club, the Kookaburras, have received an experience of a lifetime with the Essendon Football Club after working hard for their local community. The Kookaburras spent a half day with the Bombers in a behind-the-scenes footy experience led by John Worsfold and the Essendon coaching staff. Keysborough JFC won the Fox Footy Club Rewards day at the True Value Solar Centre for its inclusive and community spirited approach to local football. The club has only recently started hosting teams in the Frankston District Junior Football League but has made a name for itself as a real community club. The junior football club, with help from the seniors, has established clinics at the local Turkish school and other clinics at predominantly Asian schools in the area. These clinics have given the club a chance to grow and recruit new players as well as give local kids the chance to try a new sport they may not have played before. The Fox Footy Club Rewards is an initiative of Foxtel that supports and encourages beneficial behaviour by sports clubs. National Ambassador for the program and former St Kilda Football Club captain Danny Frawley said investing in local sports clubs strengthens communities. “Local sporting clubs are at the heart of local communities all over Australia and it is fantastic to have an organisation such as Foxtel continue to invest at the level where it all begins for so many of our AFL players,” he said. Michelle Pollard from Keysborough Junior Football Club said the club appreciated the recognition for its hard work. “Our club is ecstatic to have been recognised,” she said. “For us, it is testimony to a number of hard-working club members who strive to create a stable and inclusive club.”

By David Nagel The Jayco Dandenong Rangers will play a leading role in the Women’s National Basketball League’s (WNBL) push to spread its wings into regional Victoria after the 2016/17 fixtures were released last week. Newly appointed Head of WNBL Sally Phillips said the initiative for clubs to play home games away from their home courts would help bring the game to all corners of the country. “It’s great to see the WNBL heading to regional areas with the Jayco Dandenong Rangers heading to Traralgon in Round 6 to face the University of Canberra Capitals and the Boomers taking their game against the MAC Adelaide Lightning to Geelong in Round 13,” said Phillips. “I’m looking forward to seeing our clubs engaging with those communities and our players providing inspiration to junior basketballers in those areas.” Dandenong home fans will get the chance to see newcomer Ally Malott as well as championship winner Natalie Novosel who makes her return to the club three years after her departure for the first time in Round 2 against the Perth Lynx. The Rangers will also be involved in two huge double headers against the Melbourne Boomers on Melbourne Cup and Australia Day eve. Melbourne general manager Justin Nelson is looking forward to another exciting season and said the marquee games were an exciting part of the action. “The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are really pleased that we will be presenting 12 home games at family-friendly times and with some really exciting themes,” said Nelson. “Last season’s Melbourne Cup eve and Australia Day eve games were heavily supported and we expect both will sell-out this season.” The league’s eight teams will play a total of 24 games, the same amount as last year, across 19 rounds for a total of 96 games before the finals begin on 25 February. Following the introduction of a three-game series for the first time in WNBL’s history last season, the finals structure will again be slightly altered with a three-game series brought in for the semi-finals. This will eliminate the need for preliminary finals as the victors of those two semi-finals series will meet in the grand final, starting on 11 March. Phillips is excited by the prospect of the season ahead. “Right from round one we’ll be treated to some outstanding WNBL action with the much anticipated grand final re-match between the JCU Townsville Fire and the Lynx,” Phillips said. “Aussie Hoops round in Round 7 promises to be a fantastic opportunity to showcase our role models to the next generation and to see the excitement in the eyes of our Vicinity Centres Aussie Hoopers being front and centre on game day will be a real highlight.” Three straight home games to kick off the season will provide Bendigo Bank Spirit fans with the

Berwick Mazda Dealer Principal Grant Handley, General Manager Andrew Soligo and General Sales Manager Trevor Arnold with the newly arrived Mazda3.157907

Mighty Mazda3 Berwick Mazda has welcomed a new addition to its range – the new Mazda3. Released earlier this month, the updated Mazda3 gives car buyers more choice and value with the affordable Neo model starting from $20,490. Dealer Principal Grant Handley said Mazda3’s safety and innovation were key to the family driving experience. “Every model in Mazda’s line-up now has a five-star ANCAP rating and we are passionate about the safety our product provides to families,” he said. New Mazda3 features new i-ACTIVSENSE safety technology including Smart City Brake Support-Forward (SCBS-F) which is now standard across the range while Mazda3 Maxx and

all grades above it get SCBS-Reverse (SCBS-R), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Mazda3 also provides families with great value with the added safety inclusions of Driver Attention Alert (DAA) and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) on the Mazda3 SP25 GT, and the rangetopping Astina adds the Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS) and Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH) as standard equipment. As part of its 11th birthday celebrations this month, Berwick Mazda is offering $500 in free accessories with the new Mazda3 and any new car in the Mazda range this month only. Contact the Berwick Mazda team on 8796 6222 to book a test drive.

Make a cheeky statement with Kia By Ewan Kennedy The Kia Picanto is a small city car that’s loaded with standard equipment and comes in at a very attractive price of just $14,990. Tall, cheeky styling makes a statement in the new Kia Picanto. Infotainment features are limited to the Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with information displayed on a small red-on-back screen. USB and Aux sockets are recessed above a phone-sized space. It has six airbags, ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, stability and traction control, daytime running lights, outer rear seat IsoFix child-seat anchorage points, and emergency-stop signal. The major controls are large and well-placed but the steering wheel is height adjustable only. Around town the little Picanto is nimble in traffic and has good visibility to let you keep track of the traffic all round. It’s easy to park, again due to the excellent visibility and also to the fact that there isn’t a lot of car in the first place. Out of town it’s happy to motor at motorway speeds but hills do cause it problems.

Tall, cheeky styling makes a statement in the new Kia Picanto. Around town fuel use is in the seven to eight litres per 100 kilometres range which is about average for this class. On the open road there’s no trouble getting it down into the fives. Handling is good without being in any way aimed at the keen driver though it is inclined to move about in crosswinds or large truck slipstreams. The Kia Picanto is a cheerful little car with a lot of style. To inspect the Kia range contact Dandenong Kia, 46 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. Phone 9792 9922.
