Fight over tree axing

Carl Doolan helps place the AusNet gas pipelines that will service Kingston Estate. 157584 Site supervisor Adam Turner was busy making sure the pipeline installation was going smoothly. 157584

It’s go for gas KINGSTON estate residents who shivered through two gas outages last month will be relieved to know that new pipelines are being installed by their gas supplier, AusNet. The outages, which left dozens of households without heating or hot water on two bitterly cold nights, should now be a thing of the past with AusNet Services increasing gas capacity to Ocean Grove with

the construction of an alternative gas supply into the Kingston Ocean Grove Estate near Evergreen Circuit. AusNet Services’ principal gas planning engineer Mark Baker said that gas usage recently hit record levels due to significant population growth combined with record cold days. “Strong population growth in the area

coupled with extreme cold weather stressed the capacity of our network, despite our efforts to prevent supply issues by increasing gas pressures to Ocean Grove,” he said. “We are expecting sustained growth in this area over a number of years, and usage is being carefully monitored to ensure we continue to meet the needs of the Ocean Grove community,” he said.

Mr Baker noted the support of the City of Greater Geelong and the developers of the Kingston Ocean Grove estate to allow the project to proceed quickly. “Other local bodies shared our desire to see the needs of the local community met, and we appreciate their support in facilitating a quick response,” he said.

A PLAN by Shell Road Developments to remove 150 trees from the Grubb Road gateway has had the required six objections. Council Planning received objections from The Greens, Ocean Grove Business Association and Ocean Grove Community Association among others. The planning permit will now go before a review panel which will ask for verbal submissions against it. Shell Road Developments initially made the application to remove trees for the future Kingston Village shopping centre. Grove locals have banded together to block the tree removal. There is a petition at Driftwood Cafe with several hundred signatures already. “We hope to get more before the weekend is out,“ Ocean Grove Business Association president Ty Simons said. “Fingers crossed we stay a green and lovely town.“ Council was contacted for comment, but did not get back to the Voice in time for print.

Social response makes Heather’s day - and helps Africa, too 1236698-MB31-16

By JUSTIN FLYNN

www.gregslyoptometry.com.au

NOT in her wildest dreams did Heather Edsall ever think that a simple Facebook post would turn into something so huge. Heather, from Ocean Grove, posted a call out for materials so that she, and her sewing students, could make reusable sanitary pads to help girls in Africa attend class every day without an interruption to their education. She received an overwhelming response. A few weeks later, Heather helped organise a day where people could get together and help make more sanitary pads. About 30 people gathered at Moorfield Park estate in Wallington to band together for a worthy cause. “There were 30 people sewing,

cutting, studding, looking after the kitchen,” Heather said. “Others couldn’t stay but popped in with donations of fabric, studs and food. There has been an overwhelming response from the community. So much fabric is now under my cutting table.” So successful was the day, that Heather is organising a second workshop and will announce the date on the OGBH Community Noticeboard Facebook page. “We’ve made 343 completed pads with another 300 partially made to be completed,” Heather said. Local business also got involved on the day. IGA St Leonards and Michels Patisserie made food donations and Moorfield Park Estate donated the use of its clubrooms.

SOMETIMES the simplest of gestures can evoke the biggest response. And that’s where three separate organisations have come together to help. Encompass Community Services, Bellarine police and the Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre have teamed up to help the disadvantaged with a drop-off point for good quality warm clothing for people in need during the colder months. The initiative is named ‘Clothing the Community’. The idea was the brainchild of Bellarine police’s Leading Senior Constable Laurie Taylor. “We probably see more disadvantaged people than most in our job,” he said.

“It’s an area that we can push them in the right direction.” People in need often require adequate clothing during winter and spring. The idea is for Ocean Grovers to donate a good quality jacket or other item of warm clothing to a drop-off box at Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre. Encompass is a not-for-profit organisation committed to promoting equality and opportunity for people. It offers support to people with physical, intellectual, sensory and psychological disabilities, young people who are disengaged, longterm unemployed and those facing financial, social or learning barriers. You can drop off an item of warm clothing at the centre at 1 John Dory Drive.

KERRY Ridgeway’s service for Australia was unique among Vietnam veterans. The Ocean Grove resident educated soldiers during the war, giving them qualifications for promotion and to return to civilian life. Mr Ridgeway trained as a primary teacher and received the call for National Service in 1968. He followed in the footsteps of his father and father-in-law, who both served during World War II. After deferring to finish his studies and to complete a year’s teaching, Kerry undertook recruit training at Puckapunyal. He joined the Royal Australian Education Corps and went on to Singleton NSW for infantry corps training. Mr Ridgeway deployed to Vietnam in December 1970 and served at 1 Australian Logistic Support Group (1ALSG) Vung Tau as a sergeant education instructor.

WE WILL REMEMBER: Ocean Grove Vietnam veteran Kerry Ridgeway with his service medals and those of his father and father-in-law, Lee Schram and Jack Ridgeway. 157713 His was a small unit, consisting of only three officers, three fellow National Servicemen and one corporal.

Mr Ridgeway’s duties included educating soldiers for promotion, up to Services General Certificate of Education – today’s equivalent of Year 11.

He also travelled into the jungle to teach Diggers in the field, and admired how they faced their hardships. “They were hunkered down in fire support bases,” he said. “They had to put up with a lot of dirt, dust and mud in the rainy season.” One of the highlights for Mr Ridgeway was teaching “American” English to Vietnamese secretaries who worked at 1ALSG during the day. Mr Ridgeway returned to teaching and worked for 12 years as a principal. Mr Ridgeway will be the keynote speaker for Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL’s Vietnam Day commemorations, which take place at 3.42pm on 18 August. The commemorations mark 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan, which was the most costly battle of the Vietnam War.

Rockin’ out to beat the blues By JUSTIN FLYNN IT’S official – Surfside Waves Soccer Club rocks. The club is passionate about mental health and when club stalwart Cath Sattler came up with an idea to help, she set about putting the Beyond Blue Bash together. The ‘bash’ will be a night of music and fun on 2 September to support Beyond Blue. “I was inspired by another soccer player who is a good friend, Katie Neville of Galaxy United, where I am also involved as player welfare mentor,” Cath said. “Katie ran a big blue bash at Galaxy earlier this year and it inspired

me to want to do something for Beyond Blue who do so much to raise awareness for anxiety and depression.” The musical line-up was put together by Kelly Clancy and features a stunning array of local talent, including Sarah Carroll, the Von Robertsons, Fenn Wilson and Ska Bang. “It’s fantastic, it will be lovely to see everyone from the soccer club again,” Sarah Carroll said. “Everyone there is very special to us. We’re really proud of the local community. I always like doing performances here.” Stigma attached to mental illness is slowly being erased, but Cath said

Every building we design begins with a relationship based on understanding, cooperation, suggestion and creation. It is a process that encourages individual expression in the building of something lasting and valued.

Cath Sattler, Andrea Robertson, Fenn Wilson, Sarah Carroll and Kelly Clancy are all supporting the Beyond Blue Bash. 157885 there’s still work to do. Tickets are $20 and the night kicks off at 6.30pm at Shell Road Reserve. For more details or to purchase a ticket contact Cath on 0434

Firies take the challenge step by step By LUKE VOOGT TWO locals will compete in their first Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb next month, joining fellow Ocean Grove firey Adam Thompson. It’s Adam’s second stair climb, and he is keen to beat last year’s time of 5.19 minutes. “It’s pretty physically challenging,” he said. “I was knackered when I got to the top, but you’re doing it for a good cause, so it makes you push yourself harder.” He’s got some simple advice for 18-year-old Jayden Harrison-Roberts and 19-year-old Jock Smith,

who will join him for their maiden climb. “Just keep pushing,” he said. “When you feel like you can’t go any more just remember why you’re doing it.” This year the event is raising money for Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, the largest child health research institute in Australia. So far Victorian firefighters have raised $131,069 of the event’s $343,000 target. About 500 firefighters will climb the 28 floors of Crown Metropol Hotel on 3 September, wearing 25kgs of turnout gear and breathing apparatus.

“To ensure the longevity of your jewellery, it is important to have them professionally cleaned and checked” - Ian Pattison

OCEAN Grover Alan Cobham decided to put his innermost thoughts into a book, and now has the finished product to share. Alan’s book, ‘Magic Moments’ is a memoir of his childhood memories, his first and only romance, children and even his ‘death’. He decided to cobble together a collection of his memories including a section on nicknames. Alan’s nickname is ‘Bassa’ or ‘Bass’ because someone decided he looked like a basset hound. “Well, I have to admit that I’ve got droopy eyelids, bleary eyes, sagging bags under the eyes, and ghastly large, pendulous ear lobes, but at least I’ve got long legs!,” he said. Alan said it took three months to finish the book, and it was 20 years in the making. “It takes so long...you keep going back, taking bits out, adding bits in,” he said. “I didn’t realise how much was involved.” The book is a light-hearted look at life and includes a few ‘tall stories’. During the 128 pages of ‘Magic Moments’, Alan shares photos, emails, reveals intimate secrets about relationships and stories on names and nicknames, all with a self-effacing humour. ‘Magic Moments’ is available from Bookgrove on The Terrace, Ocean Grove.

Seth Constable being congratulated on becoming a finalist in the competition by Year 10 co-ordinator Brendan O’Brien. 157974

Seth’s idea is right up there OCEAN Grover Seth Constable is a finalist in the ‘Upstart Challenge’, an entrepreneurial program and business ideas competition for secondary school students. Seth, a Year 10 student at St Ignatius College, was thrilled to be named a finalist in the program, which is aimed at building an entrepreneurial culture and fostering strong relationships between students, educators, industry and the community. “The final evening at the end of August is for the finalists to present their pitch with a threeto-five minute presentation to special entrepreneurs and an

expert panel of judges and community and sponsors,” he said. “There will be a People’s Choice award as well. The challenge has been a two-pronged project devising the science engineering concept and then the business model to produce it and market it. Some other projects have been devising an emergency helpline app, eating disorders through human care project, app converting sign-language to text. I developed ‘The Drone Sentinel’ concept and am very proud to be a finalist.” All Victorian finalists will present on 25 August pitching their case on the night to pro-

mote and develop their ideas. The winner receives $1000 and chance to develop their idea with certain companies, an opportunity afforded a number of other finalists. Seth’s friend, Saint Ignatius Year 10 student Lara Walters, has partnered with him recently to assist with the business development of the project and the pitch. “The concept is a drone airspace security program involving developing a sentinel lighthouse tower that transmits a signal to the master controller of drones to shutdown all unauthorised drone movement in restricted airspaces,” Seth said.

Flying Brick on 10-day Variety Bash THE 'Flying Brick’ is ready for action. The iconic cider house in Wallington will be represented in the 26th Variety Bash, which began last week and finishes on the weekend. The ‘Flying Brick’ is an original 1977 HX Holden Statesman Deville, and it will attempt to travel more than 4000km in 10 days, from Melbourne to Darwin, to raise money for children with special needs. The Flying Brick Cider Co Variety Bash crew of car 5050 comprises David ‘Flyde’ Sharp, Peter ‘Tarna’ Sharp and Jock ‘Travers’ Whiting. The annual event raises money for Variety – the Children’s Charity which supports children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs. This is the third time Flying Brick Cider Co has participated in the Variety Bash but already this year, they have managed to raise more than $20,000 for children in Victoria. The mighty ‘Brick’ crew departed on the 2016 Variety Bash from Melbourne on Wednesday August 10 along with other entrants and event officials for a 10-day fun-filled adventure heading

north and travel through some of Australia’s most spectacular outback country before finishing in Darwin on Saturday. Director of Flying Brick Cider Co, David Sharp, said participating in the Variety Bash was something he had always wanted to do and having now done it twice, he was hooked. “The ‘bash’ combines adventure, spending time with old friends – we all grew up in Branxholme, near Hamilton - and raising money for a great cause," he said before departing. “I’m really looking forward to it - there are always a lot of funny stories along the way and we are expecting there will be a lot more on this trip – we are a pretty motley crew.” The Flying Brick car is an original 1977 HX Holden Statesman Deville. PRESENTS

THE National Broadband Network (NBN) has hit Ocean Grove and it’s time to get up to speed. Troy Wiseman is in charge of getting Grovers connected with his brand new Telstra NBN Sales Centre - and there’s a bonus for customers who sign on. Troy is giving a donation for every connection back to the community. “We’re giving a donation of every successful NBN connection,” he said. “I just want to give back to people who support me. It’s more about the local presence here.” More than 3200 homes and businesses in Ocean Grove are now eligible to connect to the NBN network. Telstra Country Wide area general manager for Western Victoria Steve Tinker said the launch of Telstra services on the NBN network around Ocean Grove would give locals the opportunity to use a variety of new and emerging technologies. “The introduction of the NBN network in Ocean Grove marks the beginning of a new brilliantly connected era for locals,” Mr Tinker said. Mr Tinker said Telstra staff had been gearing up for the launch for several months with local technicians and store staff, including those at the new Telstra NBN Sales Centre in Ocean Grove receiving special training to help residents seamlessly transition to the NBN network. “We are aiming to ensure the process is simple for those look-

AS I have written on many occasions, community safety is an important priority for me as local member. So like all on the Bellarine, I was appalled and am very concerned with the recently committed serious crimes that have severely impacted on a number of our local residents. In my new role as Minister for Police I am focussed on decisively tackling these crimes. For example, in conjunction with the Commissioner of Police, changes will be made to the no-vehicle-pursuit policy that will send a clear message that offenders will be pursued, but in doing so police officers will not put other road users at risk. In addition, later this year the State Government will be introducing new laws that will target car jackings and home invasions, with offenders facing lengthy jail sentences. Police numbers are always an issue and the Andrews government is employing 400 extra police across the state. Fifteen of these have already been engaged in the region

allowing for the re-opening of the Drysdale, Portarlington and Queenscliff stations and, in turn, taking pressure off Ocean Grove. And with further police to be recruited over the next two years I am confident more will be employed locally. In addition, and as I have noted in earlier editions, the State Government’s expanded “Public Infrastructure Fund” enables councils to apply for up to $250,000 for CCTV and urban design changes to improve community safety. As in the past, I will provide my full support to any applications from the City of Greater Geelong for such funding. And the Bellarine Community Safety Group, which I co-chair with Assistant Commissioner for Police Tess Walsh, continues to meet on a regular basis. The group is made up of community representatives from across the Bellarine and local police and is focussed on dealing with local policing matters on a pro-active and consultative basis.

public discontent surrounding the operation of the organisation. As a result of the review’s negative findings the government, through the Department of Health, engaged consultants Biruu Health to develop a ‘Bellarine Strategic Health Services Plan’. In summary, this plan will address the utilisation and organisation of health care on the Bellarine, consider how future services could be delivered and examine access to aged care services in the area. As part of the plan’s development community consultations are at the time of writing taking place. These sessions are designed to ensure locals get the opportunity to express their views, concerns and ideas. Out of the plan, I am fully committed to ensuring Bellarine residents into the future receive quality community health and aged care services, delivered effectively right across the Bellarine.

on Friday 29 July. A full vessel of 400 passengers took the return trip to Docklands of about 90 minutes each way. The trial is a significant step forward for the introduction of a possible permanent daily service and in supporting such a service the State Government has committed $15 million in building the new Portarlington Safe Harbour that can cater for the ferry. I take this opportunity to congratulate Port Phillip Ferries on the trial and I now look forward to their report back to the government on their review of the trial. I am also told that all passengers on board enjoyed their trip and the fact that into the future they can say they were among the first to have travelled on the ferry service. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or call my office if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly.

environment

Seriously, trees are for the birds

Whiskered tern.

Caspian terns. are also found in Tasmania. I have seen these birds at Western Treatment Plant, plus at Lake Connewarre and at Swan Bay. The striated fieldwren is tawny-olive in colour and streaked with black all over. The tail has a whitish tip. The male has white eye-brows, lores and throat, where as these areas are brown on the female. The fieldwren that I photographed is therefore a male, and a handsome one at that. I also saw three Caspian terns at Swan Bay. Caspian terns, at 60cm in length, are the largest species of tern. Speaking of terns, I also saw a lovely whiskered tern during a quick drive through at Western Treatment Plant. Whiskered terns are 25cm in length, and in breeding plumage (such as the bird I saw) they have a dark

red bill, red legs, a black head ‘cap’ with white cheeks (hence ‘whiskered’). Their upperparts are pearl-grey and underparts are sooty black. They never stop moving so are hard to photograph. I had a wander around the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve last week, and saw some lovely birds, including a few flame robins, a grey shrike thrush, and three black-faced cuckooshrikes. Lovely! If you are interested in any organised bird watching activities, you can check out the program of outings conducted by Birdlife Bellarine Peninsula at http://birdlife.org.au/locations/ birdlife-bellarine-peninsula. BARWON COAST Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline. RIVERVIEW FAMILY CARAVAN PARK - OFFICE REDEVELOPMENT: Second stage underway: In 2014-15 Barwon Coast started the much needed redevelopment of the office at Riverview; with the full redevelopment of the caravan park office to be completed over 2 years. The first stage was completed in late 2015 and saw the provision of a dedicated laundry to service the accommodation portion of the business; a staff lunch room and outdoor staff courtyard; and relocation of existing kiosk to the southern end of the park. It also involved improvements to parking for caravans checking into the park and increased single vehicle parking at the front of the building. The second stage will see the redevelopment of the front office and the building entrance to provide greater internal usable space for both staff and visitors. Included is improved and safer pedestrian access to the office from both car parks. Trak Constructions successfully tendered for the work and expect to complete the final stage before December this year. WEED REDUCTION: Over the last few weeks and for the coming month or two, Barwon Coast has and will be undertaking extensive woody weed removal along the Ocean Grove – Collendina foreshore adjacent Ocean Throughway. Barwon Coast Staff, Conservation Australia Volunteers and our Green Army Team have been involved in this significant work to maintain and improve the indigenous plant species biodiversity. The primary woody weed removed has been Polygala a South African species that is particularly invasive in coastal areas. It is a woody shrub up to 2m height and the most effective and efficient way to remove it is stockpile the cut plants onsite for burning at a later date. Consequently small fires will be periodically visible along Ocean Throughway. Staff are present at all times and have to hand a firefighting pump unit to ensure the burn offs are under control at all times.

CYLINDERS BEACH ACCESS – 31W BARWON HEADS Barwon Coast is continuing to work on options for access from the ‘Cylinders’ car park down to 13th Beach. Costing and design work is progressing and a funding application to the State governments Coastal Environments Program (CEP) – Public Access and Risk has been lodged. The last round of the CEP program provided the funding for the removal of the old access and for the planning of the replacement facility. The site of the old staircase, lost late last year, is still active and presents almost insurmountable problems for re-building on the same site. All other options are being investigated including funding possibilities for those options. Barwon Coast knows it is a popular site and have received input from stakeholder groups supporting a replacement access in some form. We will continue to work toward the best outcome possible and to also keep the community updated as planning progresses. OUR COAST - planning together for our changing coastlines The Our Coast project has produced a technical report detailing how areas along the Bellarine Peninsula and Geelong could be impacted by climate change under various scenarios. The project has an extensive community engagement focus and is supported by the Victorian Government, the City of Greater Geelong, the Borough of Queenscliffe and local committees of management, including Barwon Coast. A series of open houses and community workshops in each of the areas identified in the report will commence at the end of July. At these events, community members can learn more about the data and its implications, and provide input into future planning initiatives. Our Coast project was in Ocean Grove for open house info day, at the Shell Rd Pavilion, on Wednesday 3rd August 2-8 pm. Go to the link below for more info. Our Coast facebook page is also now up and running and you can read about the research and stay up to date with the upcoming community engagement activities. https://www.facebook.com/ourcoastvictoria/ Gary McPike General Manager

IT’S been a lovely few weeks. The days are slightly warmer and there’s lots of water around, which is great. The west track pond in the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve is still relatively empty, so more water is definitely required. I’ve noticed lots of trees being removed around Grubb Road. It’s sad when habitats disappear and animals and birds have to find new homes. The large pine trees in Swan Bay Road near Piknik Cafe have also been removed. I loved seeing black-shouldered kites and Australian hobby’s in those trees, so I will miss the birds and the trees. Speaking about Swan Bay, I had a look around at the Swan Bay pier this morning, and had a lovely time despite the freezing cold wind that certainly made the conditions uncomfortable. It was not surprising that there was nobody fishing off the pier. I was trying to photograph a very handsome male superb fairy wren when I noticed a striated fieldwren perched on the top of bush. I just love these little (14cm in length) birds, and their song is just one of the most beautiful I have heard. Striated fieldwrens are found in coastal areas of southeastern Australia, from Botany Bay in NSW to near Kangaroo Island in South Australia. They

Three times the artist FOLLOWING the recent announcement of the very first Australian tour for guitar legend Ana Popovic who will be bringing her Trilogy Tour to our shores this September, Mitchell Creek Rock and Blues Festival is proud to announce the addition of a second Victorian show on Thursday 22 September at the Barwon Club in Geelong. Confirmed to be joining Ana for the Geelong show at the Barwon Club will be none other than the esteemed Chris Wilson, and the very slick award-winning sensations, Blue Eyes Cry. The award-winning, hardtouring, guitar-slinging Ana successfully blends smoking electric funk and slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals and a tight blues groove with soulful, feminine vocals. Add to the mix her incredible stage presence, all of which makes her an irresistible force in the world of contemporary blues music and Australian audiences are in for a treat with her up-close and intimate shows.

With ‘Trilogy’ Ana releases three albums in one! Twentythree blues, jazz and funk tunes produced by Grammy Award winner Warren Riker (Lauryn Hill, Carlos Santana), Grammy Award winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi) and Delfeayo Marsalis, one of the top trombonists, composers and producers in jazz today. Guest appearances include Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Bernard Purdie (The Purdie Shuffle), Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), George Porter (The Meters), Ivan Neville, rapper Al Capone and others. Trilogy highlights in musicianship Ana’s agile shredding and soulful voice, showing you don’t need Southern roots to create fiery blues, jazz or funk. Tickets are on sale and available at http://tickets.oztix.com. au/?eventId=65551 for $28.60, which includes booking fee and processing.

Jasper’s the type to fight for ON HEARING about little Jasper Day’s heroic plight to spread the word about type one juvenile diabetes, the staff at the Ocean Grove Hotel knew that they had found a very worthy candidate for their next trivia night, to be hosted at 7pm on Thursday 25 August. Jasper, a local superhero who resides in Ocean Grove, was diagnosed with type one diabetes on 3 September last year, while on holiday with his family in Hawaii. This outcome was at first unfathomable for all involved due to the lack of previous family history of the illness, which is one of the reasons that the family are trying to raise awareness about the unrelenting disease. The trivia nights hosted by the Ocean Grove Hotel were brought into fruition by the wonderful support of the local community not only wanting to get together to enjoy a night of laughter and fun, but also to support wonderful causes such as this one, affecting individu-

Waves’ effort pays off well Women’s Div 1 - Surfside Waves 1 d Kardinia 0 ACCOMPLISHED football and an outstanding effort, with all players playing for each other led to a well deserved win. From the first whistle to the last, the Waves played their best football of the season, starting with Madi Wilding making great decisions and key saves, plus playing the ball out from the back when opportunity arose. Cath Sattler is settling in to the sweeper role and never really looked in trouble, helped by the competent back line, speedsters Kate Elstone, Emma Riley, plus Emily Russell up from the Division 2 team, kept the Kardinia wide players contained. Neisha Pearson lifted yet again, showing great timing and skill, often starting attacks from the back. The midfield was firing again, Gina Murphy marshalling the players, creating plays and hitting the bar from a free kick was outstanding. Jordan Tabakovic brought her run and carry, laying the ball off for wingers Grace Cotter, Faye Kendall, as skilful as ever, Allana Gillbee showing her tricks, creating space and good passing to the front two of Alexis Pearson and Melissa De Bruin, whose effort to pressure the Kardinia back line led to turnovers on many occasions.

Great result for Cobras

Brave Grubbers bow out of finals

Semi Final OGCC 1 (55) V Bannockburn (21): A trip to Bannockburn to play the home team in the first final was a great challenge. The boys got off to a good start thanks to the hard work around the packs from Jolyon Simpson and Nathan Down, Tim Hannan controlled the ruck contests around the ground, Cooper Tully showed poise around the contest slotting two goals and Kye Annand proved a handful up forward and gave us plenty of opportunities to score. Rhys Devlin and Sam Donegan controlled their wings and constantly pumped the ball forward. Bryce Dunnell was solid at centre half back and Austin Hamilton was back to his dashing best off half back. Everyone contributed at some stage to make sure the result finished in our favour. Preliminary Final OGCC (23) V Lara 1 (36): After leading all day the Cobras were unable to hold on against a strong finishing Lara. Bryce Dunell and Phoenix Bowers repelled many forward attacks, Kirby Reilly found some form on a wing after injury and Brodie Muscat, Cooper Tully and Nathan Down worked hard through the mid-field. Jools Bond and Cooper Ward looked dangerous up forward, but unfortunately it wasn’t the Cobras’ day. Under 9s OGCC White (49) vs Anglesea (19): It was a fantastic finish to what has been a terrific year. The boys certainly saved their best for last in what was an outstanding display winning plenty of contested ball and showing all that they have learnt through the year with lots of exciting passages of play and strong marks. Congratulations and well done to all players and parents for their efforts this year. A special thank you to Damo for his efforts this year. OGCC Red (22) vs OGCC Blue (24): The game was played with great tenacity and was played in great spirits. Thanks to all of the parents for their help and support throughout the year and thanks to all of the boys for being great kids. Goal kickers: Tyla Meyer, Joe McGregor and Keegan Johnson. Coaches awards to Griffin Burgess, Jarvis Lindsay, Darcy Harrington, Xavier Wallace and Kai Dickson. OGCC Blue (24) vs OGCC Red (22): A great game played by two teams who like nothing better than to play footy to the best of their ability for a full game. The closeness of the match and all interclub matches we have played this year is a testament to the hard work and planning by the club and committee. Well done to all players, coaches, parents, carers and helpers. Award winners: Hamish Stowe, Fraser Stowe, Liam Seddon, Tyler Bishop and Tiger Turnley. Under 10s OGCC Orange (69) vs Grovedale Delaney (1): Perfect conditions at the Snake Pit to finish off the season. An overall excellent performance by the whole team to come away with an easy win. Coach Tony told the boys to back themselves, play as a team and build a defensive wall and that’s exactly what they did. Awards to Makani Storey, Miller Keck, Luke Devlin, Billy Hayward and Alex Gibbon. OGCC Blue (75) vs Modewarre (8): The Cobra blue boys were on fire for the final game against Modewarre and it was great to see some team first passages of play linking up with good field kicking, good decision making and some line breaking runs. Awards: Elijah Ottenson-I, Josh Hunt, Jack Bennet, Rory Phillips and Henry Wood. Under 12s OGCC White (21) vs Torquay Stone (12): With one win apiece in the final game of the season, it felt like

Strong defence from Noah Collins, Tajh Wirth and Dylan Grace. Link ups, kicking to space, hangers, great display from all with too many standouts to mention. OGCC Red (61) vs Grovedale Young (49): Cobras Under 12 Red played an exciting games against Grovedale Young. The injured Cobras captain Oliver Connan elected to kick against a slight wind. The Cobras’ defence was under extreme pressure during the first quarter and held Grovedale to two points by the leadership of Saxon Copeland in the back pocket. OGCC 2 (4) vs Inverleigh (107): In our final game of the season it was always going to be a tough ask against run away ladder leaders in Inverleigh. To the boys credit they dug deep and although the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it, they really did play well, we ran and carried the football and took the game on at every opportunity and in general play the boys got plenty of the ball. It’s been a great season by all the

boys, with every one of them continuing to improve with every game. Encouragement awards: Will Lamb, Diesel McNeil, Harry Paterson, Charlie Every, Spencer Bryan and Ty Armistead. OGCC 3 (42) vs Portarlington (26): A great hard fought win by the 3s against Portarlington to finish the season. Grubbers hold on in thriller By MARK HEENAN OCEAN Grove finished its 2016 season with a pulsating one-point win against Queenscliff on 6 August to allow departing senior coach Wayne Walsh the fairytale ending. The Grubbers gave their loyal fan base hope for 2017 after victories over third-placed Anglesea on July 30 and BFL flag challenger Queenscliff in a thriller. Ocean Grove jumped to sixth spot on BFL ladder – with an 8-10 record after 18 rounds – with its second win against a top-three side in successive weeks. Final scores Ocean Grove 11.5 (81) to Queenscliff 12.8 (80). First year Grubber Mickitja Rotumah-Onus, who booted two majors, kicked the important sealer in the final minutes. Walsh said the improvement late in season was due to more competition for spots in the senior team. “I think in part of it, we have got a few back from injury late in the year,” said Walsh, who coached his final senior game for Ocean Grove. “We have had a bit of depth, so there is that bit of competition to play seniors again.” Ocean Grove dynamite small forward Travis Gavin, who kicked three goals, played a permanent marking role in attack on the bigger surrounds at Queenscliff. “Travis had to play the bigger key forward role, that is what was expected of him,” Walsh said. Grubber Jahd Anderson, who kicked two majors, was instrumental at the stoppages. Ocean Grove utility Michael King who snared two goals, inspired his side with forward 50 entries in the third

term to allow the Grubbers a handy 15-point buffer at the final break. Queenscliff, kicking to the favourable western end, gained the ascendancy to gain the lead mid-way through the final quarter despite Ocean Grove responding late in the game to win. Couta star player Andrew Hodgson punished the Grubbers on turnovers with three goals, while former Queenscliff coach Tom Limb led the way to kick three majors. Walsh said Queenscliff were more polished than the Grubbers, who struggled with execution at times. He said his side’s intensity and tackling pressure was fantastic late in the season, which meant the Grubbers were always in games. “We haven’t got as much polish as other sides,” Walsh said. “Execution and decision making still hurt us at times (against Queenscliff) and probably hurt us a lot this year and why we are not playing finals. “We have learnt this year we are not that polished, so we have got to be good at other things. “That is clearances, tackles and creating turnovers, that has been a focus for us.” The Grubber reserves grade side gave retiring veteran Kane Montgomery the perfect send off with an inspiring nine-point win over Queenscliff. Montgomery, who turns 37 next month, is a multiple premiership player at the Ocean Grove Football Club. Final scores Ocean Grove 8.13 (61) to Queenscliff 8.4 (52). Grubber Reid Billington kicked four goals for the visitors. Ocean Grove reserves grade finished their season in ninth place with a 3-15 record after 18 rounds. In the under-18 Colts Division 2,

Premiership coach By Mark Heenan EXCLUSIVE AN Ocean Grove Football Club under-18s triple premiership coach has emerged as a genuine candidate for the club’s vacant senior coaching position. Matt Tyrrell, 38, who coached the Ocean Grove under-18 team to three flags in a row from 2008 to 2010, admits he is eyeing off the top job. “I have applied for the Ocean Grove senior coaching role,” said Tyrrell, an Ocean Grove-based electrician. Tyrrell has spent the last two seasons as ruck coach mentor to key Ocean Grove big man Andrew Jarvis, who won the Grubbers’ senior bestand-fairest award in 2015. Tyrrell, who played in two senior flags in 2000 and 2001 under four-time Ocean Grove premiership coach Mark Neeld, coached the BFL under-18 Interleague team in 2010. He worked as an assistant to former Ocean Grove senior coach Cameron McGregor in 2011. The father-of-three said he was keen to help the Grubbers regain its home grown talent who have left in recent years whom he shared a bond with as the under-18s coach. Daniel Maloney, Jack Rawlings, Sam Fairway, James McTaggart, Harrison Foott, Corey Walter, Brandon Poulter and Sam Rankin - who all played in the 2014 BFL grand final are no longer playing at Ocean Grove. Star juniors Kane Reardon and Christian West have not played seniors at Ocean Grove this year. The 2016 season is the first time since 2010 Ocean Grove has failed to

make the BFL senior finals. The senior Grubber coaching position closes this Friday 19 August, with all written applications emailed to ogfncpresident@gmail.com Ocean Grove Football Netball Club president Tony Potter conceded a decision to appoint a new senior coach prior to the end of August would be

unlikely. He said the position had attracted wide interest outside the Geelong region. “We have had a wide range of applicants from all over Victoria,” Potter said. “The process going for (a new senior coach) is going well, but as you

know it is not finished yet. “I would be reluctant to say how many applicants we have had. “We are in a fantastic position though ... we have had plenty of applicants.” The panel is expected to meet this week to discuss the vacant senior coaching role.
