GRAPHIC images of female students from Lilydale High School are reportedly being shared on an international pornographic website, where users can view and upload sexually explicit images. Of the 70 Australian schools mentioned in the report, 16 were Victorian schools. The site is believed to have targeted students from Lilydale High School, Ringwood Secondary College and Norwood Secondary College. The website reportedly contains photos of the victims and details, such as their full name and home address, as well as giving users the option to find girls, depending on their school and location. A spokesperson for the Victorian Department of Education confirmed they are providing support for those affected and are assisting police with their investigation. “It is disgraceful to see Victorian students being targeted by this highly inappropriate website, the spokesperson said. “The online exploitation of young people is a very serious issue that can have serious ramifications for those involved. “The department is assisting police with their inquiries. “We are working with the schools affected to ensure support is available for any students or staff who may need it. So far, thousands of explicit images of nude schoolgirls have been reportedly uploaded to the pornographic swap-meet site. Lilydale High, Norwood Secondary and Ringwood Secondary School, whose students were reportedly featured on the website, said in a joint statement they would be revisiting their cybersafety programs and focusing on teaching students the importance of respectful relationships. “We run a range of school programs designed to teach students about respectful relationships, cyber-safety and to help them respond to unacceptable online behaviour,“ the statement read. “We will be revisiting these programs with students in coming weeks. The Lilydale, Norwood and Ringwood schools said they were concerned about the safety and wellbeing of their students and were offering support for students and families that had been involved. “The safety and well-being of students is our top priority, and we have been working with staff to ensure support is available for any affected students and their families,“ the statement read. All schools are assisting police with the ongoing investigation. *Some news outlets on Friday 19 August, reported that Australian police had taken down the site.

Love still after 40 years with old Flame By Victoria Stone-Meadows A HORSE in Selby named Flame of Trunkey has reached an incredible milestone and has celebrated her 40th birthday. Flame is a Standardbred harness racehorse who was born in NSW in 1976 and was bought as a yearling by the mother-in-law of her current owner, Val Rees. The sturdy little horse had 51 race starts in her career with nine wins, eight seconds and three thirds - but for Val and Colin Rees, Flame’s charm was not in her racing. “Flame was no champion and is not a tall horse,” Ms Rees said. “She relied on her toughness to give her owners a thrill each time she raced.” After her retirement from the Victorian and NSW racing scene, Flame became a brood mare and threw four foals.
One of her foals has remained by her side as a paddock mate for the last several years and keeps Flame company as she continues to age. Flame has been a permanent fixture in the Reeses lives for many years and Val says she couldn’t ask for a better horse. “Flame’s race results are of no real importance as she is a muchloved member of our family whose every need has been seen to,” she said. “It has been a team effort coming from friends and family that has contributed to her long and healthy life.” If Flame’s age was measured in ‘human years’, she would be 110 years old. While Val says the winters are getting harder and harder for Flame, they expect to get many good years out of her yet.
A happy and horsey birthday to Flame, pictured here with owner Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS Val Rees. 158323

More algal blooms likely as weather turns warmer THE Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is advising the public to expect more algal blooms as the weather warms up. This could include algal bloom that affected Lillydale Lake earlier this year. Lillydale Lake was previously affected by blue-green algae in January this year which stopped locals from taking a dip during the hotter summer months. Port Phillip Bay has al-
ready seen numerous algal blooms which is unusual for this time of the year. DELWP Port Phillip Regional Director, Kelly Crosthwaite, said: “a number of small, marine algal blooms were detected in Port Phillip Bay this week around St Kilda, Port Melbourne, and Safety Beach. “These types of blooms are common in the bay, but not usually at this time of the year,” Ms Crosthwaite said. Go safe for Pokemon VICTORIA Parks and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) are urging Pokemon Go fans not to enter private property during their quest to ‘catch ’em all’. They say fans of the augmented reality game are putting themselves and the public at risk by entering restricted areas, such as enclosed water storages, water treatment plants or energy facilities. Instead, they are inviting
Pokemon trainers to make use of the huge expanses of public land, reserves and waterways. Pokemon hunters have been highly active in the Yarra Ranges region, with Lillydale Lake in particular proving to be a hotspot among Pokemon hunters. Most notably, the rare Pokemon Dratini has been spotted numerous times in the area, attracting many players. Parks Victoria spokesperson, Lachlan Quick, urged Victo-
rians to make the most of the spectacular parks and reserves available. “It’s important people read any signage they come across and take notice of where they are at all times for their own safety,” he said. Mr Quick noted trespassing could attract a maximum penalty of $3886 or six months’ jail. For more information on Victoria’s parks, visit www. parkweb.vic.gom.au.
winds and warmer weather have attributed to the premature arrival of algal blooms and DELWP suggests that these blooms will become more frequent during the warmer months ahead. “They are a natural occurrence and usually disperse within a couple of days, but with the weather warming up we can expect to see more algal blooms,” Ms Crosthwaite said any pollution or algal blooms should be reported immediately to 1300 372 842.

ST PAUL’S Primary School students in Monbulk are getting acquainted with a life-sized, fibreglass cow as part of the Picasso Cows program. As part of a Dairy Australia program, which is now in its eighth year, students have 12 weeks to decorate their cow in one of three dairy-related themes. The themes are ‘Unbeatable Bones’, ‘Fuel for Life’ or ‘Farm to Plate’. They must also complete learning journals.
Dairy Australia Project Manager, Emily Barnes, said the program aimed to help students learn about where their food came from and the health benefits of dairy food. “It’s a mammoth task, but one well worth the effort from both an educational and nutritional perspective,” she said. “Our curriculum-linked Picasso Cows program uses creativity to bring dairy into the classroom.” St Paul’s Primary School joins 80 primary schools nationwide to participate in the program.

CFA still in limbo By Peter Douglas WITH the Victorian fire season just months away, CFA brigades in the Yarra Ranges face ongoing instability, with the contentious enterprise agreement again in limbo. After the Country Fire Authority (CFA) board on Friday, 12 August, seemed to have finalised a pay deal through the EBA, their drawn-out efforts were halted, with the Supreme Court of Victoria deeming the agreement should be the subject of a trial. In what is a temporary victory for Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV), the trial is scheduled to start on Thursday, 22 September, which will be just days before the fire season looms. To put this in perspective for CFA brigades, on 30 September last year it was the beginning of a controlled burn racing out of control at Lancefield, as temperatures hit 30 degrees. Meanwhile in the Yarra Ranges outbreaks began in early October, with a two-hectare fire in Yellingbo. Meanwhile, the EBA dispute continues to plague the CFA, with the VFBV announcing its disappointment on the Friday, after it seemed the EBA would progress further. “Today is a day of infamy that will burn into the memory of every CFA volunteer,” the VFBV told its members. “It is the day that a CFA board decision, and those board members who voted for it, betrayed volunteers and ignored their responsibility and obligations to the public of Victoria. “This evening, the CFA board, made up of a majority of the An-

drews Government-UFU (United Firefighters Union) - ‘yes’ people, accepted the UFU’s EBA.” Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish, also hit out, labelling the deal a “stitch-up”. “(Victorian Premier) Daniel Andrews has stitched up the signing of the UFU’s checklist EBA by appointing his own hand-picked CFA board,” he said. “This is yet another slap in the face to the 60,000 volunteers who are being ignored.” Ms McLeish also claimed the board’s approval of the EBA had been released before the board had even met to discuss the matter. “The board met last Friday night, with the statement from the chair announcing that the CFA board had endorsed the EBA initially published, distributed and time-stamped at 10.36am - five hours before the board even met,” she said. However, the VFBV was quick to reveal to its members the Supreme Court bid. “Our injunction to suspend the processing of the UFU EBA, because it contains clauses contrary to the CFA Act affecting volunteers, will be considered by the Supreme Court on Wednesday morning,” the VFBV told members. Ultimately, the VFBV was successful, at least temporarily, with the EBA vote being postponed until the conclusion of the trial, during which it is expected past and present CFA board members will be involved. Meanwhile, the postponement earned the ire of the UFU, with UFU Secretary Peter Marshall offering a scathing response to the VFBV’s efforts.
The volunteers had a clear message for the Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, during the rally in Belgrave. 155792 Picture: PETER DOUGLAS “Victoria’s fire services are not a political plaything,” he said. “Victorians rightly expect career and volunteer firefighters to get back to work, protecting them with the onset of another fire season. “Instead, the VFBV continues trying to divide career and volunteer firefighters and undermine morale by spreading misinformation and launching politically motivated legal action.” Also adding to the uncertainty around the agreement is the fact the Liberal Party made a federal preelection commitment to block the enterprise agreement.
During a visit to Belgrave in June, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop used the opportunity to declare the party would not “stand idly by and allow a Labor Government to unionise a volunteer organisation of 60,000 people”. Meanwhile, Minister for Employment, Senator Michaelia Cash, recently reiterated the government would address issues in the CFA deal through amending the Fair Work Act. * The ‘Mail’ attempted contact with District 13 members over the upcoming fire season. However, representatives failed to respond before deadline.
Hills builder gets nailed THE Victorian Government is reminding homeowners to be vigilant after a recent series of incidents where unregistered builders have failed to complete work. According to the Victorian Department of Justice and Regulation, one of these cases was against unregistered builder James Reid, 32, of Kallista. In the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court in June, Mr Reid, who the department says is an officer of landscaping company Surface and Leaf Pty Ltd, was found guilty of entering into a major domestic building contract while unregistered. The court also found Mr Reid had accepted excessive deposits, and had failed to supply all agreed work at two properties in Wantirna South and another in Northcote. Mr Reid was fined $2400. Meanwhile, orders for compensation have previously been made by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). In the past three months, four unregistered builders in Victoria were ordered to pay a sum close to $35,000 in fines, refunds and costs, following court cases. The builders were made to pay fines for being unregistered, failing to complete jobs, charging excessive deposits and even harassing clients. Due to the recent increase in unregistered builders undertaking work, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Marlene Kairouz, is urging Victorians to do thorough reference checks before hiring builders. “I urge all Victorians to save themselves time, money and stress," the minister said. “Check if a builder is registered with the Victorian Building Authority before contracting for work more than $5000.“Consumer Affairs Victoria has been contacted more than 24,000 times regarding building matters in 2015-'16, making building one of Victoria’s most complained about issues. New laws introduced by the Victorian Government, which will commence in September, aim to ensure that customers receive building information guides from builders before signing any major domestic building contract.

See the Big Picture YARRA Ranges Shire is reminding residents to have their say on the future of the region. As part of a new initiative, the Big Picture community consultation process aims to develop a new vision for the future of the region. Community members are encouraged to contribute their ideas through an online forum at oursay.org/yarraranges/bigpicture and vote or comment on the ideas of others. Feedback received will contribute to the development of the new vision and council plan, while also playing an important role in guiding the key projects of the new council, which will be formed following the upcoming council elections
this October. A series of community forums has also been planned, to allow community members to discuss the ideas for the future with others, helping achieve general consensus as to what matters most for the community as a whole. Registrations for the following community conferences are now open: Thursday, 25 August Sherbrooke Family and Children’s Centre, Upwey; Monday, 29 August - Kimberley Place Community Centre, Chirnside Park; Wednesday, 31 August Coldstream Community Centre, Coldstream. To share your big picture ideas, visit: http://oursay.org/ yarraranges/bigpicture.

AGAIN we have a letter, regarding the EBA for the CFA, trying to put the spin of ‘nothing here to see, move along’. This time from Geoff Champion in his letter ‘CFA right-wing’ (‘Mail’, Tuesday, 16 August). Again, I ask: if this EBA is so good for, and will not impact on, the running of the CFA, why did previous (Victorian emergency services) minister Jane Garret resign? Why was the previous board sacked and replaced with a majority of ‘Yes Minister’ members who have
agreed to approve the EBA? Why did the previous chief executive officer and the chief fire officer resign? Why was Craig Lapsley given the job of overseeing the EBA implementation? Why is the Volunteers Association trying to get a court injunction to stop a vote? Obviously, (Emergency Services Minister) James Merlino doesn’t want to, or can’t, reply to my previous letter, so maybe Geoff Champion, who claims to understand all the clauses in this EBA, will reply for him. Dennis Yeats, Tecoma.

Fashionable approach to care THE Monbulk Care Network (MCN) will be holding an inaugural Gala Fashion Parade to support the notfor-profit charity Fulcrum Aid. Fulcrum Aid is a newly established Australian company which is a voluntary, non-profit relief and development organisation committed to re-sourcing local innovative leaders within communities experiencing poverty and extreme inequality. In Uganda, they provide teenage orphan girls with opportunities for financial independence and outgoing education instead of being forced into marriages. In South Sudan, they resource the training of nurses and midwives in Papua New Guinea, developing a program designed to address intergenerational poverty. In Bangladesh, they are supporting a program for isolated HIV-positive orphans. The MCN will be raising money to support the organisation with a parade that features prestige clothing, millinery and matching accessories as collected by a former volunteer of MCN. MCN is an outreach of the Open Door Community Church which seeks to be a localised, authentic expression of Christian faith. The profits from money raised at the op shop are used to support child wellbeing in local schools and those in the community who are struggling. Monbulk Care Network welcomes new volunteers. All pieces from the fashion gala will be for sale on the day, with some being auctioned. Afternoon tea will be served and will be included in the ticket price of $25 per person or $20 concession. The gala will be held on Thursday 25 August, from 1.30pm, at Nathania Springs, where The Chapel will accommodate up-market stalls, featuring French floristry, rare books, giftware and home accessories, millinery, tea and coffee accessories. For bookings, call 9756 7800.

Sausage exploits working class Sausage Party (MA15+) Starring: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig SAUSAGE Party has left me feeling conflicted, and not just because this vulgar film about talking food may be the best comedy of the year. In a supermarket society of sentient food, sausage Frank (Seth Rogen) discovers the digestive fate that awaits them once purchased, and rallies the other foodstuffs to fight back against the humans. The humour is hilariously, ridiculously crude, but like
Deadpool, Sausage Party is intelligently crude, full of silly yet cleverly-executed puns, sight gags and dirty metaphors. But the laugh-a-minute gags are bolstered by quirky, sympathetic characters, vibrant visuals and some neat action. The film is also a surprisingly lucid satire of organised religion, with the myth of the 'great beyond’ blinding the food to the reality of their situation. Sausage Party is a sidesplitting and weirdly deep animated comedy, but damning allegations have recently surfaced about Nitrogen Studios, one of
the animation companies behind the film. Anonymous testimonies accuse Nitrogen of intimidating and exploiting its animators and forcing them to work unpaid overtime, and the film’s credits acknowledge just over half of the animators who worked on the film. Of course, everyone is innocent until proven guilty, but if these allegations turn out to be true, it would be unethical to support Sausage Party, however fun it most certainly is. - Seth Lukas Hynes

that we get back in, with people saying how much they enjoyed it ... which has been really lovely feedback,” he said. The tours involve a coordinator telling the stories of Melba’s life and celebrity about 100 years ago, seeing the rooms as they were in the singer’s lifetime. Mr Johnson said that Melba’s “valuable and interesting” private art collection would be on show, as well as letters from the King and Queen and her visitors’ book. The music room at the es-
tate once hosted celebrities and entertainers, including Charlie Chaplin. “The rooms themselves are absolutely exquisite,” Mr Johnson said. “Melba had a fantastic sense of taste and art and the furnishings certainly really show that.” The tours cost $125 per person, and include the tour and a morning or afternoon tea, with a glass of wine, tea or coffee. THE home of Coldstream’s Dame Nellie Melba will be opened up until the start of next month, with tours offering a once in a lifetime view of rooms never before opened to the public. Coombe - The Melba Estate is running tours of Melba’s private home, Coombe Cottage, until 2 September, giving visitors the chance to see the private rooms of the famed opera singer. Though the estate itself was opened to the public in 2014, with a restaurant, art gallery and cellar door, Coombe Cottage itself has remained off-limits to visitors. From 6 July, limited places were made available for tours of the gallery, gardens, Melba’s music room, boudoir and bedroom. Business Development and Melba Estate manager Daniel Johnson said the tours were originally meant to wrap up on 13 August, but more spaces were made available due to the tour’s popularity. “We’ve had excellent feedback from everyone who’s attended so far - we’ve got cards

The Wizards cast their spell THE Monbulk Rangers under-10s Wizards capped off a brilliant season in the VCFA with a 1-0 win over Monbulk Rangers Dragons at Menzies Creek Reserve on Saturday, leaving the Wizards well clear on top of the ladder. Coached by Rob de Wit, the Wizards
scored 61 goals for the season and had only 11 scored against them in the 13-team competition. The depth of quality in Monbulk’s under-10s competition was evident this year, with all three teams placing in the top four
in the VCFA. Siblings Ethan and Georgia Knight of the Monbulk Rangers under-10s Wizards work their magic in a 1-0 victory over the Monbulk Rangers Dragons at Menzies Creek Reserve

in the world,” Mr Malovic said. “It requires very little treatment to make it safe to drink and we want to keep it that way. “Most of Melbourne’s drinking water comes from our pristine catchments, which have been closed to the public for more than a century. “Keeping people out of them protects Melbourne’s drinking water from pollution and reduces the amount of treatment it requires to protect public health. “People might think their actions are harmless but they are threatening a precious resource that all Melburnians rely on. “These areas are clearly fenced off and there is very clear signage warning people not to enter. “Our security teams work closely with Victoria Police to conduct surveillance, apprehend and prosecute trespassers.” If you witness a person entering a secured catchment, please report it immediately to local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 100.

EMERALD Police Sergeant Fiona Tolmie and Melbourne Water are warning people to stay out of the area’s catchment to protect the quality of Melbourne’s drinking water. Melbourne’s protected water catchments include the Cardinia, O’Shannassy, Silvan, Maroondah, Upper Yarra, Greenvale and Thomson reservoirs, as well as any Yarra River tributaries. Trespassers face fines of $2450 and potential jail terms. Sgt Tolmie warned Victoria Police has zero tolerance for anyone caught trespassing. “Trespassers face substantial fines and potential jail terms,” she said. “These areas are clearly fenced off and signposted, there is simply no excuse for being there. “We co-ordinate covert surveillance and enforcement activities with Melbourne Water.” Meanwhile, Melbourne Water’s Catchment Asset Manager, Mario Malovic, said people should not enter fenced-off areas. “We are lucky to have among the best-quality drinking water

Finals teams decided THE home and away season has been run for Division 2 and Kinglake and Yarra Glen are the minor premiers for seniors and reserves, while in netball Seville are minor premiers in A and B Grade. They all turn their sights to next Sunday when the elimination and qualifying finals will be held at Warburton Millgrove and Woori Yallock football grounds. Keep your eyes on the AFL Yarra Ranges website for all game times and updates. Division 1 head into Round 18 next week and the ladder is still up for some shuffling reliant on results. Dual ladder-leaders Wandin and Olinda can be affected if one of them lose. Healesville are holding onto third position but are shaky and could potentially finish fifth. Division 1 Seniors Olinda Ferny Creek 24.17(161) d Belgrave 9.10(64) Olinda started off strong kicking 6.4 to 3.2 and took a healthy lead of 20 points into the second quarter. They really lifted it up a notch in the second and kicked 7.2 to 4.3 and the game was all but over by half-time. Another 7.7 in the third to 1.2 gave them a lead of 88 points at three-quarter time. They took the foot off the pedal in the last but still came away with a commanding 97-point win. Twelve goal-kickers made it hard all day for Belgrave to set up an effective defence. Olinda Ferny Creek Best: J. Wallis (4 goals), N. Broomhall (5), N. Keegan (2), M. Wright (2), D. Wilson, B. Walter (1). Belgrave Best: M. Johnson, T. Stubley (3 goals), M. Brown, E. Dougleris, B. Dadswell (4), J. Pearce. Warburton Millgrove 14.10(94) d Mount Evelyn 9.6(60) Warburton Millgrove got back on the winners' board on Saturday after a good win over Mount Evelyn. Scott Muir was back in form kicking 7 goals. The first quarter was close with Warburton just getting the upper hand with a slim lead of 2 points. They extended their lead to 8 points in the second. A 4.2 to 1.1 third quarter saw their lead extended to 25 points at three-quarter time and it was always going to be difficult for Mount Evelyn to get back into the game. The final quarter was really goal for goal but Mount Evelyn could not get the break they needed. Warburton-Millgrove Best: T. Marr, J. Lee, K. Hall (1 goal), S. Muir (7), T. Walker (1), J. Iacono. Mount Evelyn Best: D. Kift, A. Gibbons, R. Cowan, L. Francis, J. Barden, J. Thompson (2 goals). Wandin 15.12(102) d Monbulk 11.14(80) Wandin had a close win over Monbulk on Saturday. Even though Monbulk never headed Wandin they were always in touch and tested Wandin all day. Wandin held a slim 4-point lead at quarter time. Kicking 5.2 to 1.3 extended that lead to 21 points at half-time and a handy buffer going into the third. Monbulk outscored Wandin in the third, kicking 5.2 to 4.4 and reduced the margin to 14 points. They were in with a chance in the last but Wandin held on and would be glad they got away with a win.
Upwey-Tecoma enjoyed a tough contest against Emerald. 158333 Wandin Best: J. Ladner (1 goal), T. Hinds, B. Harvey, Jack Bayliss (1), S. McDonnell, B. Chapman. Monbulk Best: S. Smith (1 goal), C. Sharpe, J. Rak (1), J. Mohr, J. Major, S. Gough (2). Upwey-Tecoma 21.11(137) d Emerald 16.8(104) Emerald got a quick start in the first quarter and stunned Upwey-Tecoma by kicking 3.1 to 3 behinds to take a 16-point lead into the second quarter. Upwey got their game going in the second, kicking 9.4 to 3.3 to swing things around and take a 21-point lead into half time. Emerald found their kicking boots in the third and outscored Upwey 6.1 to 5.3 and it was a real battle of the forwards. Chris Jones and Dan Waters were best, kicking 8 goals each for the day. Upwey maintained their composure and kicked away in the last to come away with a 33-point win and fifth position on the ladder. Upwey Tecoma Best: D. Waters (8 goals), K. Grenda, B. Duncan, J. Hevern (2), L. O’Brien, D. Devers. Emerald Best: D. Karacsonyi, M. Steer, J. Donders, Michael Dompietro (1 goal), P. White (3), C. Jones (8). Woori Yallock 15.17(107) d Healesville 7.9(51) Woori Yallock has secured fourth spot but have given themselves a realistic chance to finish third after a big win over Healesville on Saturday. Healesville have struggled over the last five weeks, only getting wins over Emerald and Mount Evelyn and dropping games against Wandin, Olinda and Woori Yallock. Not the best form going into finals. Scores were all tied up after the first quarter. Woori Yallock piled on 6.9 to 1.4 in the second and the half-time margin of 35 points could have been much worse for Healesville. Healesville really struggled to penetrate the back-line of Woori Yallock and only managed another 4 goals for the day while Woori Yallock kicked 7 to come away with a 56-point win. Woori Yallock Best: J. Matthews (2 goals), J. Coombs, T. Anderson, C. Smedley, R. Allen, M. Baxter (4). Healesville Best: B. Murphy, J. Nugent, M. Jeffery (1 goal), N. Mende, L.
Barclay, C. Warren. Division 2 Seniors Kinglake 16.13(109) d Alexandra 13.11(89) Kinglake are minor premiers after a 20-point win over Alexandra on Saturday. A win for Alexandra in the end would have given them third spot, but they now have to play in an Elimination Final against Yea on Sunday. Alexandra held a lead of 5 points at quarter time but Kinglake swung that around in the second, kicking 8.4 to 3.1 to take a lead of 27 points at halftime. Alexandra outscored Kinglake in the last half by kicking 7.7 to 6.6, but it was not enough to worry Kinglake in the end. Kinglake Best: B. Robinson (1 goal), J. Butterworth, J. Crowe, R. Mallison (4), B. Wilkinson, B. Tampion. Alexandra Best: R. Norris (1 goal), J. Goonan, L. Ragg, B. Norris (3), W. Goonan, M. Steiner (1). Yarra Junction 26.11(167) d Thornton Eildon 9.9(63) Yarra Junction’s final game for the season dealt Thornton Eildon a winless season. Thornton Eildon have been resilient all year and hopefully can rebound in 2017. Junction got out to an early lead by kicking an impressive 8.5 to 3.3 in the first. Their lead increased to 55 points at half time. A total of 12 goal kickers for the day saw them kick 9 goals in the third to increase their lead to 89 points at three-quarter time. Another 4.5 to 2.2 in the last and a big win of 96 points Yarra Junction Best: B. Wragg (6 goals), J. Black (2 ), A. Chandler (3), H. Wilson, T. Hancock (2), E. Wadsworth (3). Thornton Eildon Best: Z. King (2 goals), D. Creed, J. Strachan (2), K. Purtle (1), A. Marshall, Z. Vujasic. Yarra Glen 18.15(123) d Gembrook Cockatoo 13.8(86) Yarra Glen held onto second spot on the ladder after a good come from behind win over Gembrook on Saturday. These two will meet again next week in the qualifying final. Gembrook took advantage of the wind and kicked 4.3 to 2.4 in the first, Yarra Glen kicked 4.3
to 4.1 in the second to reduce the margin to 9 points at half time but Gembrook certainly had their running game going. The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with both teams kicking 4 goals and the margin was now 7 points in favour of Gembrook. Limited rotations for both sides was going to make the last qtr a battle of the fittest. Yarra Glen found another level in the last and kicked 8.5 to 1.3 to come away with one of their best wins for the season and probably just at the right time to be hitting some form. Yarra Glen Best: L. Telford (1 goal), D. Hurley (1), J. Marks, C. Tait, W. Kristelly (1), M. Gordon (1). Gembrook Cockatoo Best: P. Gramc (6 goals), J. McLean-Brunton (2), R. Causer (1), R. Wilson, M. Maddison, B. Fenton. Yea 23.12(150) d Seville 8.6(54) Seville will not be playing senior finals for the first time in several years after a season that has been tough. Yea has secured themselves an elimination final against Alexandra next Sunday after a resounding win by 96 points on Saturday. Yea got away to a good start kicking 8.1 to 2.2 to take a winning lead of 35 points into quarter time. Seville really had no answer for Yea’s attacking style of play and could only manage 4.1 to 7.2 in the second. Yea’s scoring slowed down in the second half kicking 8.9 to 2.3 but never gave Seville a look in all day. Yea Best: A. Hobbs (11 goals), H. Saville (1), H. Jarvie (3), M. Ivill, D. Evans, J. Mahon (1). Seville Best: J. Pignataro (4 goals), B. Abbruzzese (2), J. Wathen (1), S. Wilson (1). Powelltown: Bye. MacDonald, T. Amarant, R. Diclaudio, R. Whitworth, C. Cameron (1 goal), A. Closter. Mount Evelyn 14.13(97) d Warburton Millgrove 6.5(41)
Mount Evelyn Best: B. Forbes (6 goals), A. Johnson, M. Gibbons, M. Brierley (1), D. Maunder (1), D. Watson (2). Warburton Millgrove Best: L. Downie, C. Shalevski (2 goals), T. Dargie, M. Edwards, A. Maguire, J. Blake. Wandin 21.8(134) d Monbulk-Seville 1.4(10). Wandin Best: H. Byrne (1 goal), D. Hirst (1), J. Byrne, A. Marsh (11), M. Dall (4), J. Molluso (3). Monbulk-Seville Best: B. Redfern, B. YARRA RANGES ATHLETICS THE Yarra Ranges Athletics members were spread far and wide over the weekend. Five athletes travelled to Canberra to compete in the Australian Cross Country Championships and there was a fantastic turnout of club athletes at the Club Cross Country Championships at Morrison Reserve. It was a windy, bitterly cold day in Canberra for the Australian Cross Country Championships held on the purpose built Stromlo Park cross country course. Teams from every state and territory in Australia plus a team from New Zealand produced big fields and some excellent races. A deceptively tough course fully tested every athlete making the eventual winners very deserving. Kiara Flavel was the best performed Yarra Ranges Athletics athlete with an excellent third place in the Under 11 Girls 3km race. Maddie Laven was close behind in 8th place, leading their team to a third place and bronze medal. Sam Norton was in touch for most of his Under 14 Boys 3km eventually finishing in a strong 7th place, with his team finishing second. Georgia Laven and Lily Peacock were part of a very big and competitive Under 16 Girls 4km race. Georgia finished 22nd with Lily 12 seconds behind in 31st place. A similarly cold, biting wind greeted Yarra Ranges athletes at the club’s annual cross country championship day.
EMERALD GOLF THE annual challenge match between cotenants at Emerald Golf course was staged, with Olinda striving to maintain the ascendancy over Emerald. Two teams of 10 faced each other in the match play format with like handicappers facing each other. Peter Clowes (E) lost to Mike Hayes 2 down, Ross Martin (E) def Phil Chrimes 1 up, Dean Shannon (E) lost to Bruce Williams 1/3, Peter Glasscock (E) def Mike Wilshire 5/4, John Keys (E) def Wayne Parsonage 1 up on the 19th, Ken Hill (E) lost to Phil Wilkin 1 down, Graham White (E) lost to John Ellerbock 4/5, Philip Crossley (E) def Gary Westbrook 2up, Sepp Krummenacher (E) def Gary O’Brien 1up, which left the teams at Emerald 5 to Olinda 4 with the last pair coming in square after 18 holes. A draw was not on the table so further play was necessary. John Piggott (E) and Graham Collier, the final pairing, who were locked together after 18, had to go out to make the win decisive one way or another. They both bogeyed the first hole and marched, or struggled to the second. Both drove well and Piggott had to play first and plonked a great shot over the water to the back of the green. Collier chose a safer route to the front of the green where he then chipped a little too hard to the back of the green. After rumination and putting, Piggott triumphed and Emerald had a 6/4 win to turn the tables on Olinda for a change. The perpetual trophy was handed back by Bruce Williams with threats of retaliating next year while Dean Shannon responded by thanking all but maintained the right to win the trophy again next year!
Pictured are Jake Angus (first) and Reece Thompson (second) in Under 9s Boys 1500m. 158301 The task, to be one of the first three runners over the line to win a medal, meant the heat was on right from the start. With some runners away at nationals and other events, opportunities were there for the taking.
Thanks went to all who helped out on the day to made it a huge success. Next week is the cross country presentation day at Hedgend Maze. An opportunity for the club and their families to get together for a fun day, recognise all the achievements
over the cross country season, enjoy a fun relay, barbecue and all the fun and games available at Hedgend Maze. For information on how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit yarrarangesathletics.org. au or check out the Facebook page.
