Ponds police ‘sent to minister’s seat’
Station shuffle alleged By Luke Voogt More officers for Police Minister Lisa Neville’s Bellarine electorate might be to blame for reduced opening hours at Waurn Ponds station, a Liberal MP has claimed. Andrew Katos said he had “joined the dots between the cuts at Waurn Ponds Police Station and the government increasing staffing for Bellarine stations. “She’s expecting police stations in her electorate of Bellarine to have counter service - but not neighbouring electorates, the Liberal South Barwon MP said. “That’s great for them but they’ve got to understand that this is at the expense of their neighbouring electorates. Mr Katos said the move followed a pattern throughout Victoria. “I’ve got numerous examples of my colleagues in Melbourne who
have had their counter services and police hours cut. Ms Neville furiously denied the accusation. “This is misleading and incorrect, she said. “The number of frontline members at Waurn Ponds has not changed. On Tuesday Ms Neville praised the decision to reduce the counter hours, which she said would allow more police patrols. But on Wednesday she accused police of failing to properly consult the community before the decision. “Myself and senior members of Victoria Police were unaware these changes had been made until yesterday, she said. Ms Neville denied changing her position on Waurn Ponds station, which was to provide “proactive policing. Continued page 12

In Brief Spray days City Hall has unleashed Victoria’s largest mosquito-spraying program after winter rain increased potential breeding sites and threatened to create summer swarms across the Bellarine Peninsula. The only spraying program in Victoria using a helicopter would treat more than 1000 hectares after beginning this week at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, the City said.
Youths arrested Police have charged two youths over a series of burglaries, car thefts and assaults across Geelong. The 17-year-olds were arrested last Friday after officers from Geelong Police’s High Volume Crime Unit executed a search warrant on a Corio house.
Silver side The Geelong region’s Olympic contingent has completed the Rio games with a single silver medal. Geelong rower Josh Dunkley Smith, pictured, won the region’s only medal when his coxless fours team finished second to Great Britain.

Tom takes on Demons 10 years later as baby close By Luke Voogt Cats defender Tom Lonergan can look forward to holding his first child this weekend thanks to dedicated doctors and litres of blood donations. Wife Kim is due to give birth on Saturday, 10 years after a sickening on-field collision cost Lonergan a kidney and nearly his life. “I’m just so incredibly grateful we’ve got such great human beings in the world,” he said while visiting staff at Geelong hospital this week. Lonergan suffered severe damage to his right kidney in the now-infamous collision, backing into a marking contest against Melbourne at Simonds Stadium during round 21 in 2006. Medical staff pumped an estimated 40 units of
blood into his body, almost draining supplies of his uncommon blood type in Geelong. Lonergan lay in a coma for four days and lost 17kg as he underwent trauma surgery. He was at Geelong’s Red Cross donor centre on Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s game - also against the Demons and at Simonds Stadium. “I looked at the draw and saw the coincidence and thought it would be a great opportunity to give back to a couple of great charities that helped me in my time of need.” As an ambassador for Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, which promotes organ donation, Lonergan has asked both sides to don rainbow-coloured shoelaces for Saturday’s game. “Hopefully, we can raise awareness around or-
gan donation,” he said. Lonergan encouraged locals to give blood, saying Geelong was 15th in the state for donations. “One in three people need blood in their lifetime.” Lonergan said he was forever grateful to doctors and staff who operated on him. “For those people to go in and save a life, it sort of blows me away.” The 32-year-old said the incident had made him value his family, friends and team mates even more during the past 10 years. “As a 22-year-old, you’ve got this great life ahead of you and nothing will knock you down. “Things like that can turn you right upside down.”
Surveillance cameras have captured an unidentified woman throwing eggs into the reception area of a Highton real estate agency. Hayeswinckle’s Daniel Hayes uploaded the footage to Facebook with the offer of a $500 reward for information and a suggestion that the woman was “sick of getting junk mail”.
15,000 invited An organisation likened to activist group GetUp! has mailed 15,000 invitations to sit on a ‘Citizens’ Jury’ charged with shaping Geelong’s next council. NewDemocracy Foundation will whittle down the jury list to 100 members at the Andrews government’s request for recommendations on the next council’s structure, including councillor numbers and how the mayor should be elected.

Double Take The version of local news on Geelong radio this week amused patrons lunching in a city café. First, a report on some criminal capers in Geelong. Next, an update on the 10-year anniversary of Cat Tom Lonergan losing a kidney. So good so far. But then came a story about Cher verbally abusing Donald Trump. The customers looked puzzled. What did Cher and Donald Trump have to do with Geelong? And why was this news? Maybe it was just a slow (local) news day. Either that or Cher and Donald Trump had moved to Lovely Banks. First it was CCTV for penguins but not people. Then she admitted the region faced crime “challenges” but failed to offer any solutions. And now the early closing of Waurn Ponds’ cop shop is all the fault of the staff, even though the day before it was A-OK by her. Yes, Bellarine MP Lisa Neville has endured an inglorious first few months as Police Minister. Granted, it’s a tough gig but she can’t blame inexperience. Her previous ministries number mental health, community services, senior Victorians, environment, climate change, and water, the last of which she still holds with her police role. At least the cops job has earned our multiminister yet another title, courtesy of a local wit: Lisa ‘Wiggum’ Neville in honour of Clancy Wiggum, the bumbling police chief from TV’s The Simpsons. To celebrate this auspicious sobriquet, Double Take commissioned a complementary image (pictured). Hail to the chief!

And sticking with the local news theme, newspaper readers might have experienced déjà vu more than once over the past week. The first came with a report that proudly could “reveal” a new rail corridor from Geelong to Torquay. Err, that would be the same corridor revealed in the Indy way back in 2008. Then a follow up to this week’s non-reveal reported the concerns of local public transport advocate on obstacles to developing the Geelong-Torquay line. Err, again, those would be the same concerns of the same advocate reported in the Indy in 2013. As readers would know, there’s a reason it’s called ‘news’ - it’s not ‘olds’.

Telstra will build a 35m high mobile phone tower in Herne Hill’s Western Cemetery after winning an appeal at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Protests and 371 written objections led to Geelong councillors knocking back the proposal last year after their planning department recommended approving the tower. Jonathon Connor of tower protest group Help Herne Hill said he was disappointed with VCAT’s decision. “We feel VCAT didn’t address how it psychologically and physically impacts the residents,” he said. “Telstra, I feel, wasn’t going to open up that conversation because it wasn’t to their benefit.” But Mr Connor accepted the ruling, saying the group would not challenge it further. “I think we’ve done everything we can to try and convince VCAT. It has acknowledged that a significant sector of the community opposes the tower.” Mr Connor said the tower would spoil the “reverence” of the cemetery. “People will be staring up at that tower right as they enter. I’m not sure it’s something I’d want to be looking at entering a cemetery.” Mr Connor said the tower also conflicted with Telstra’s reconciliation action plan, with Aboriginal elder Willem Baa Nip buried in the cemetery alongside other local Aboriginals. Mr Connor said Help Herne Hill would keep a close eye on construction, saying some plots were one to two metres from the site. He also questioned whether the cemetery was the only site available. “Would they be saying the same thing if it was a residential site? “We’re not opposed to the tower, just the location. To many, common sense says it’s not respectful.” Mr Connor said the proposal ignored the heritage aspects of the cemetery. “Every tombstone tells a story of our history, there are headstones going back to the 1800s. “Telstra is putting money ahead of respect and ethics.”

The Bellarine Peninsula Strategic Services Plan will consider the health status of the Bellarine population, their current and projected health service use and make a series of recommendations about the future delivery of health services in the local community. This newsletter provides a summary of the common issues and themes raised at community meetings held in Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Drysdale, Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, between 20 July and 27 July 2016. Close to 100 local residents attended the meetings and participated in lively discussions. The issues, themes and information will contribute to the development of the service plan.

Geelong police are focussed on catching carjackers rather than just advising motorists to lock their doors, according to western Victoria’s top cop. “The focus will always remain on the offender,” Superintendent Craig Gillard told a media conference on Wednesday after another carjacking. Two men carjacked a 76-year-old man driving a ute at the intersection of Station and Forster streets, Norlane, on Monday 22 August. Supt Gillard described the daylight carjacking as abhorrent. “I shudder that people are going to these lengths to commit crime. It’s incredibly disappointing that people in our community are experiencing these types of offences from time to time.” Supt Gillard said the intersection was “busy at 2pm in the afternoon”. “The victim has actually said some people passed him when the incident occurred. That’s not to say they ignored it - I think they didn’t understand what was occurring.” Supt Gillard said policing always came first but conceded that locking car doors was prudent, especially when driving alone. “I don’t say this is what you have to do in order not to be a victim of crime ... (but) if they feel safer locking their doors, my view is that’s not a bad idea. “Obviously I ask people to take every step possible to ensure they don’t become a victim of crime.” Supt Gillard urged Geelong motorists to be vigilant and look out for each other on the road. But he stopped short of calling Geelong the carjacking capital of the state. “We’re experiencing similar things to metropolitan Melbourne, albeit not at the same volume.” Supt Gillard praised Geelong police for number of recent arrests related to car thefts. “We’ve had a couple of these types of incidents in the last couple of weeks (that) we have offenders in custody for, which we’re very pleased about.” Supt Gillard urged any witnesses to Monday’s carjacking to contact police.
The following service gaps were raised by members of the community in the meetings: • Early intervention for families with children with disabilities • Aged care services including home-based and residential services for people with dementia • Support for homeless people • Support for people with end-stage kidney disease who need renal dialysis • Support for people with cancer who are travelling to Geelong for treatment • Mental health services for young people • Palliative care and support for families and carers • Access to allied health services, particularly occupational therapy and podiatry, and dental servcies • Access to information about the range of services available • Accessible transport options The following services were identiied by members of the community as working well: • Access to general practitioners in most locations. Portarlington was identiied as an exception • Access to some allied health services • Home and Community Care services including meals on wheels, personal care, home services and respite • Strong role of volunteers • Access to Maternal and Child Health Services in most locations • Community connections and community groups The following were ideas for better engagement between health service providers and the community: • Describe health services from the point of view of the consumer, not the provider • Create local forums for discussions about the health service system, not agency by agency • Establish a community-based and community-led health services reference group • Improve health education for communities • Improve information lows between health services and the different local communities • Encourage Councillors to become Board members at Bellarine Community Health and Barwon Health • Use community-based organisations such as schools and sporting clubs to better link communities to health care and information and to support local connections and groups • Use community newspapers, Council newsletters and rate notices to spread information. Use websites and existing email trees to back up the information with more detail and to provide links to services As discussed at the Community Forums further information about the key indings of the Strategic Service Plan will be provided at the end of the project. Biruu wishes to thank all those people who were able to attend the forums. Further information can be provided by community members via an email to bellarine.consultation@biruu.com before 2 September 2016. Please note there will not be speciic replies to individual feedback but all information will be noted and considered in the plan.

Geelong is staying put. And so is its reÄnery.
Its reÄnery supplies more than 50% of Victoria’s fuel while injecting about $200 million in wages and services into the local economy.
That’s what we’re like in Geelong. And that’s why Viva Energy is proud to be part of this town.

Sam’s memories are made of this By Luke Voogt A North Geelong cafe playing old-time music in the background brings dementia sufferers like Salvatore ‘Sam’ Casaceli “back to life”, according to wife Agnes. Sam, 80, and Agnes have become regulars at Memory Lane Cafe since he was diagnosed with dementia five years ago. “It gives me so much pleasure just to watch him,” Agnes said. “It really brings him out. It’s like he forgets all the aches, pains and everything else.” The Newcomb couple first noticed the warning signs of dementia a few years before Sam’s diagnosis. They were among the founders of Moolap’s Italian Social Club in 1976, now Club Italia, and have owned various local businesses. Sam was president of the club for about a decade in total. “He never had to write anything down - if he was making a speech he would just go off the top of his head,” Agnes said. “He would make some beautiful speeches.” The last business the couple owned was a grocery shop in Newcomb, which they ran for 16 years. When Sam had to write things down to remember them at work, Agnes said, they knew something was wrong. “He was beginning to become quite forgetful. Finally it got to the stage when he was getting rather distressed about it.” “They did an MRI and said he’s got the beginning of Alzheimer’s.” Sam’s since been on medication to slow the disease down. But it’s the Memory Lane Cafe that helps Sam’s the most, Agnes said, with its combination of familiar faces and old-fashioned music. “It’s a very enjoyable afternoon and it seems to pick Sam up somehow. They’re all very friendly down there.” “He looks forward to it because of the music and some of the people he’s met there. Some Ital-

The pair have known 22-year-old Abbey since she was 13 and described her “as the life of party” who would “do anything for anyone”. “She’s always the hilarious, happy one and everyone has felt her missing,” Tara said. “I think that’s why everyone has gotten around her - it’s not like her to be wrapped up at home on the weekend.” Geelong businesses are also getting on board. UNO nightclub will hold a fund-raising night this Saturday, donating half its takings to the GoFundMe campaign. Ernest and Joe Jewellery, owned by Abbey’s aunt, sold rings last weekend named after their niece to raise money for the surgery. “Abbey needs some love and all the support she can get,” Sarah said. “We miss her more than anything.” Sarah encouraged people to donate at https:// www.gofundme.com/abbeysbrainsurgery

HELPING HAND: Geelong has raised more than $60,000 for Leopold hairdresser Abbey Gasparini.
1239567-HM33-16
An online fundraiser has gathered more than $81,000 in a week for a young Leopold hairdresser's brain surgery, restoring the organisers’ “faith in humanity”. Tara Smith and Sarah Fowler created the GoFundMe page for long-time friend Abbey Gasparini on August 18, with Abbey’s sister Ella, after she fell ill a few months ago. “That half the donations have been from strangers shows just how generous the Geelong community is,” Tara told the Indy. Abbey had suffered agonising headaches for months, Sarah said, due to a pineal cyst in her brain. The cyst was pressing on vital structures and blocking the flow of cerebral-spinal fluid, and would lead to severe problems if left untreated. “We were quite shocked. You don’t feel like something like that is going to happen to someone close to you,” Sarah said. “But she’s been really strong through it all.” The friends hope to raise enough for Abbey to undergo unique brain surgery in Sydney, by Charlie Teo, the only neurosurgeon in Australia who performs the procedure. “It took a lot of convincing because she’s very private with her health,” Sarah said. “But she’s over the moon that so many people have come out and donated.” Originally Sarah and Tara had hoped to raise $10,000 to support the family. “No-one is going to have a spare $90,000 lying around,” Tara said. “If your daughter or sister had to get this operation money is the last thing you need to worry about on.” A single $10,000 donation - from family friend Ben Mansell - and $50,000 in the first day exceeded their wildest expectations. “It’s the most amazing thing,” Tara said. “I’m constantly refreshing the GoFundMe page.” The page has raised $81,610 of its $90,000 goal

breeding sites. Mosquito levels are also monitored by setting traps in residential areas. The mosquito control products used in our program are larvicides called Bacillus thuringiensis isralensis (Bti) and s-Methoprene. These products only affect mosquito larvae. People, other animals, and the general environment are not adversely affected by the aerial treatments. Residents can reduce mosquito levels around their homes by removing stagnant water on a regular basis in breeding sites like bird baths, old tyres, pot plant bases, and buckets. Also ensure rainwater tanks are covered and swimming pools and spas are well maintained. When mosquito levels are high, remember to protect yourself and your family against mosquito bites by wearing clothing that is light coloured and loose fitting, and covers your arms and legs, and by using an effective insect repellent. We have developed a short educational film clip about our mosquito program that details strategies to reduce the impact of mosquitoes around your home and on your family. A 40km/h limit would “dramatically” improve safety in central Geelong, a City Hall officer said this week when announcing dates for public consultations on the proposed speed cut. During its call for feedback, the City also included a video of one car travelling along Ryrie Street at the existing 50km/h and another travelling at a slower speed. The video showed that the faster vehicle saved two seconds on the journey through the central city area. The City said it was “keen to hear from the community” on the proposed 40km/h zone. The speed reduction would be a “key step” in supporting the TAC’s Towards Zero vision, “based on the principle that everyone has a right to use our roads and streets without a threat to life or health”, Acting General Manager Vicki Shelton said. The 40 limit would “dramatically improve the safety in the CBD and provide a safer environment for all road users”, she added. “In the past five years there have been 156 crashes in central Geelong. “These could have been prevented or lessened with a reduced speed limit.” Ms Shelton said the video at geelongaustralia. com.au/revitalisation demonstrated that the 40 limit “could be a life-saving difference”. The City said its information sessions on the proposed 40 zone at The Workshop, 100 Moorabool Street, Geelong, were at 11am to 2pm on 3 September, noon to 7pm on 5 September, noon to 7pm on 7 September, and 11am to 2pm on 9 September. The City also “encouraged” comments at revitalisation@geelongcity.vic.gov.au. The announcement of the consultation dates follows a story in last week’s Geelong Indy on state motoring giant RACV slamming the speed
SLOW GO ZONE: Lower speed limit a 'key step' in reducing road trauma, says Vicki Shelton. cut as an ineffective “blunt method” of preventing crashes. The council should undertake more work on identifying road safety issues in the city area to “actually find solutions” said RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones. The RACV would also like to see any data on the 156 crashes that the council was citing to justify the 40 zone, he said. “I’m guessing that many of these crashes were at low speed.” Mr Jones said a study of inner-Melbourne crashes found that most were unrelated to speed. “Lowering the speed limit in Geelong will make no difference to the crashes if it’s similar to what we found.”

HELLO, SAILORS: Geelong council administrator Dr Kathy Alexander, centre, launches the new event with Boating Industry Association of Victoria's Irene Hoe and Steve Potts. 158440
By Luke Voogt A boating gala on Geelong’s waterfront will be the first of its kind in the city, according to a Victorian industry boss. “We hope it’s the first of many,” said Irene Hoe, president of the Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV). Ms Hoe joined BIAV chief executive Steven Potts at Steampacket Gardens on Wednesday to announce the Life’s Better With a Boat festival. Mr Potts said he hoped the festival, which comes to the waterfront in October, would promote Geelong as a “great boating destination”. “What we are trying to do is show what Geelong has to offer,” he said. Boating could even provide transitional marine mechanic jobs for workers who are leaving the shrinking local manufacturing industry, he added. Mr Potts said the festival would showcase the latest boats and equipment, with activities for children including fishing basics, marine biology and water safety. Geelong administrator Kathy Alexander, herself a boating enthusiast, said the council supported any festival which promoted the city. “I think this is an amazing opportunity for Geelong which has such fabulous waters and boating facilities.”

Geelong was the fourth most popular boating destination in Victoria behind locations such as the Mornington Peninsula and Lakes Entrance, Mr Potts said. “We want to see Geelong elevated up that list.” Geelong had the highest per capita boat ownership in Victoria, Mr Potts said. “We see Geelong as boating capital of Port Phillip bay. Geelong and the Bellarine are fantastic boating areas.” The festival will begin at Steampacket Gardens on 8 October after a gala dinner at Torquay. The marine industry could provide jobs in tourism and boat manufacturing to help Geelong provide employment as its population doubled over the next 30 years, Mr Potts said.

Cash for disadvantaged, chemical and fibre work Separate injections of state and federal funding could put more than 500 people to work around Geelong. The state money would help “disadvantaged Victorians in the Geelong region find meaningful work and keep it”, Employment Minister Wade Noonan announced on Thursday 25 August. The $2.8 million would go to five “respected regional job service providers” to find jobs for nearly 500 people, the government said. “These providers will target retrenched workers from the auto industry, Aboriginal Victorians, young people and those with disability or mental illness. “They will launch targeted services, working closely with employers to find work for disadvantaged people who often face multiple barriers to employment and who have fallen through the cracks of the federal system.” The government said its initiative would take up the slack of federal programs that mostly targeted “job-ready” candidates rather than people with “complex barriers to employment who require more intensive support”. “Our new program will focus on developing partnerships across employment, education and community sectors, supporting local businesses to employ job seekers who are experiencing entrenched disadvantage,” the government said. “The services that have been selected have close working relationships with those employers that will support real job outcomes for jobseekers. “They will create mentoring programs, tailor support schemes for employers and job seekers and develop strategies to overcome employment barriers. “Focusing on engaging with employers, industry based training and work readiness, providers will match candidates to available local jobs.”

Police caught up in ‘shuffle’ claim from page 1 “The decision to reduce counter hours has enabled (police) to have 24-hour, seven-day-a-week patrols running out of Waurn Ponds. “This process requires police to consult with the community and show evidence that policing will be improved - this process was not followed.” Mr Katos said Ms Neville had performed “a backflip with triple somersaults.” “Tuesday afternoon she was defending the police’s actions. Now she’s put out a statement essentially blaming the police and throwing them under the bus.” Mr Katos questioned how Ms Neville could have been un- CLAIMS: Andrew Katos. aware of the opening hours decision until this week, saying he raised it in Parliament last Thursday. “How on Earth can she say she wasn’t aware of it?” Police will host a community forum on the station hours at Waurn Ponds Library from 6pm on Friday night. Mr Katos doubted the meeting would lead to any change. “Is it simply just informing the community why this decision has been made. At this point there is no guarantee the hours will be reinstated.” Mr Katos said the decision came down to a lack of resources. “We should be in a position where we can have the patrols going out and the counter services.” Ms Neville said the Andrews government had introduced 15 additional police for the Geelong and the Bellarine stations.

Avalon estate ‘to employ 2000 over next 10 years’ A new industrial estate at Avalon Airport will create almost 2000 jobs over the next 10 years, according to the State Government. The 40-hectare estate in the airport’s northwest corner would also help it “diversify its operations and attract further investment”, the government said. Victorian taxpayers would chip in almost a third of the estate’s $5 million infrastructure cost to “ensure Avalon can reach its true potential”. “It is estimated by 2026 the project will have created 750 direct jobs on site and up to 1100 indirect jobs,” the government said. “A key part of the infrastructure project will be the delivery of high-voltage electricity, gas, water, fibre optics and communications infrastructure. “Developing the industrial precinct will also make it ready for investment that will further expand the site’s use and create more jobs for the greater Geelong region.” The announcement follows a bipartisan pledge for the Federal Government to change Avalon’s classification so it can secure international passenger flights. Jetstar has a state-subsidised 10-year agreement to use the airport for domestic passengers. Avalon Airport executive chairman David Fox thanked the government for helping to fund the infrastructure costs. “This project is the first since the approval of the master plan in September last year and provides a great opportunity to diversify businesses and generate jobs for the region,” he said.

Safety concerns have forced a temporary closure of Geelong Saleyards, according to City Hall. The issue prevented sales of sheep and cattle at the facility, previously identified as a candidate for sale to improve council cofferes. City Hall said this week that a recent report to council had warned that overhead steel walkways were at risk of collapse. Stock agents use the walkways to sell cattle and sheep to buyers below. But decay in the platform’s supporting timber posts presented an unacceptable risk, said acting city services general manager Vicki Shelton. “The City takes safety seriously and will not compromise the safety of the public and staff at the site.” Ms Shelton said making the walkways safe would cost at least $250,000. The danger would halt sheep and cattle sales until council had investigated the safety of the saleyards but poultry sales would continue each Monday. Ms Shelton said City Hall would work closely with agents to explore safe, alternative methods of selling stock at the site. “Sellers and agents have been advised to use the Ballarat and Colac saleyards in the meantime.” Colac Otway Shire would waive yarding fees at the Colac’s regional saleyards for farmers affected by the closure for the next two months, Ms Shelton said. Former mayor Darryn Lyons and others had idenfified the Geelong saleyards as a sell-off prospect, citing mounting costs and other financial imperatives for City Hall.

Grovedale Quality Meats has served the best goods in Peter Street for 50 years, according to owner Trevor Forder. “She’s a real old-fashioned, tradition shop,” he said. “It’s a little bit different from the supermarkets.” A smokehouse out the back is one of the differences, Trevor said. The butchers smoke products on site, including bacon, kabana, frankfurts and ham on the bone. “The smokehouse gets a bit of use at Christmas time,” Trevor said. “It’s all done the old style.” Trevor, who has worked in the meat industry for more than three decades, also uses his small sheep farm at Lara to offer “a little bit of paddock to plate” at the Grovedale shop. “We produce about 70 lambs a year.” Trevor said the best part of the job was serving quality products to customers from all walks of life. “Everybody’s got a story,” he said. “And mine is that good quality food is good nutrition.”

Letters Heritage for some How is it that, almost in the same week, a smallfry Geelong West home-owner can be fined $30,000 under a heritage overlay for changing the facade of his house while the local council, developers and Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal all agree to a massive development on the old Geelong West Bowls Club site? The latter is in flagrant disregard of any heritage values and is surrounded by the heritage it undermines, obviously because there is a buck in it for all concerned. Can any decision be more contradictory given that council, especially, and the other authorities should be the guardians of our heritage? Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
State’s conduct unbecoming The Andrews Government made an utter shambles of the legislation for Victoria’s councillor code of conduct. The Borough of Queenscliffe was one of many examples of a council caught in an invidious position of being suspended due to a large oversight that was no fault of the councillors. More than 100 Victorian councillors woke up last week to news they had failed to comply with the requirements of legislation, based on signing a witnessed declaration to adhere to the code of conduct manifested by the councillors themselves. I spoke to Queenscliffe mayor Helene Cameron who was distressed by the possibility her role would end merely based on a technicality of misinformation conveyed from the Government to the council. This was yet another example of the Andrews government treating citizens with contempt in the way it provided information to democratically elected councillors serving their communities. Whether intentional or not, certainly the councillors felt their reputations had been besmirched by headlines screeching that not only did the government intend to suspend anyone who did not comply but they would be ineligible to stand for election again. I understand that the acting minister moved quickly to redress this shambolic situation and has sought support for amending legislation. I certainly hope this happens sooner rather than later. proposed changes to their voting rights in council elections. Some of the changes, if enacted, will restrict votes for business owners and operators and hamper their ability to vote for representatives on councils for municipalities on which their livelihood depends. Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry believes that anyone who pays rates to have their business in a municipality is entitled to have their say. The Local Government Act has not been reviewed for more than 25 years and the chamber welcomes the opportunity to build stronger communities across the state. Business is a key part of local communities in regional and suburban Victoria and it deserves to retain its voting entitlements in council elections. The chamber will strongly advocate on behalf of members to ensure their rights remain unchanged. How we treat what we eat Melva Stott (Letters, 19 August) should not trivialise the issue of animal cruelty. The debate is about how we treat farmed animals which, despite my grandmother’s stories, are no different to cats, dogs or any other creature. Free-range animals are looked after by farmers who care for their animals not just for profit but because they genuinely care about animal welfare. Intense factory farms are owned by corporate entities and overseen by labourers who only see the animals as produce. The welfare of these poor creatures is not even a consideration. It’s not a question about whether we eat meat or anything else; it’s about our treatment of these animals before we do. Tony Morgan Inverleigh
CO2 just the start One hypothesis for climate change suggests that increased sunspot activity is partially the cause, coupled with a slight shift in Earth’s axis. The shift causes a change in polarity and the weakening of the planet’s magnetic field which protects it from deadly solar radiation. As more solar radiation enters the atmosphere, ice caps melt, sea salinity decreases, temperatures rise and marine ecosystems change, coral bleaching being a symptom.
As tectonic plates move, increased volcanic activity and earthquakes occur. Cosmic events, solar activity, gas exchange, deforestation, thinning of the atmosphere, tidal patterns and temperature changes at the poles also play roles. To just discuss one aspect - the role of CO2 - is to limit the debate. A broader forum for discussion needs to begin. Denuding Earth of its great forests should cease immediately as they absorb CO2 and generate O2. This is within man’s control but axis spin and wobble, gravitational pull and factors deep below Earth’s crust are not. Let us now have a new and more-comprehensive discussion. J Jones Ocean Grove
Coal comfort for humanity Leigh Adamson’s view of coal generation’s evil effect on the poor (Letters, 19 August) ignored the fact that the Industrial Revolution, upon which the burning of coal depended, created the modern world and the medical and other technologies that doubled the human lifespan, fed the billions whom Thomas Malthus thought could never survive and made life sweet for millions in this lucky country. Some are not so lucky. Mr Adamson’s opinion that Middle Eastern wars were caused by drought caused by “climate change” might be modified by considering other factors. Islam’s major divisions, Sunni and Shia, have been at war for 14 centuries on and off. The normal climate is hot and dry. Syria and Iraq have no government beyond the major cities. Water supply is irregular and inadequate, as is electricity. The poor fend for themselves. No surprise there’s civil strife - and I haven’t mentioned Islamic State. On the local scene, Mr Adamson failed to grasp that wind and solar, being intermittent, cannot exist without heavy subsidies and, as they must be supported by base-load coal or gas generators operated at a loss, these too have to be subsidised. As South Australia has shown, dependence on wind to supply the grid is a recipe for high electricity prices, blackouts and the departure of industry. All to fix a greenhouse problem that doesn’t exist. Tim Saclier Leopold

FINALLY FRIDAY
Conway giving us her best By Luke Voogt “Guinea pigs" will hear Victorian rock icon Deborah Conway play songs from her latest album at a one-off charity show at Barwon Heads this weekend. Everybody’s Begging, out 2 September, is the ninth album for Conway, who is celebrating the 25th anniversary of platinum-selling debut solo album String of Pearls. “I’m really excited about how audiences will respond,” she told the Indy this week. “Barwon Heads are the guinea pigs.” Conway had played tracks from the album to her close circle but the Barwon Heads show would be the first time she performed them to a live audience, she said. Conway described the new album as “very toe tapping, compulsive and elemental”. “Everybody who has heard it so far has responded very favourably.” The concert is part of the Music To A Tee initiative, raising money to support people with an acquired brain injury (ABI). A portion of the proceeds will go to Geelong community services agency Karingal for people with ABI, their families and carers. “This is an organisation that can send money in a good and positive direction,” Conway said. The concert is only the beginning for Conway’s 25th anniversary tour, beginning at Sydney Opera House Saturday. Barwon Heads would be her only stop in regional Victoria, she said. “It’s basically a practice run for the big concert hall shows.” Conway will perform with partner Willy Zygier, who she met through a “happy accident” when she was searching for a guitarist early in her solo career. Their three daughters sing backup vocals on
CHARITY: Deborah Conway will play Barwon Heads to raise money for brain-injury victims.. the album and their eldest daughter will join them at the Barwon Heads concert. The concert also features veteran Australian sister duo Vika and Linda Bull. Conway, who launched her solo career in the 1990s, is possibly best known for the Australian smash-hit It’s Only the Beginning.
But she still had “things to say” after three decades of performing, Conway said. “And I find song-writing is the best way for me to say them.” The show begins at 7.30pm Friday at 13th Beach Golf Links as the first in a series of concerts at the venue.
Biggest Floyd tribute in Oz A dedicated group of Adelaide-based musicians will bring the legacy of Pink Floyd to Geelong next month. The 150 minutes of Experience Floyd makes it Australia’s largest tribute show to the legendary English band, promoters said. Bassist Mark Dole hoped the show would keep Pink Floyd’s music alive for generations to come. “We want to stand up as the next representatives of these guys in the 21st Century by being the truly authentic Pink Floyd concept show for Australia.” The show’s six-piece outfit aims to replicate the sights and sounds of a Pink Floyd concert. The band spent nearly two years arranging members and honing its sound before debuting in 2011 and settling on the final Experience Floyd version in 2014. Lead guitarist Daniel Hunter wanted to bring Pink Floyd to life for an audience who never saw the band in concert. “Each member of the band loves and respects what the original Pink Floyd gave to the world with their music,” he said. “We aim to ensure every aspect of the original Pink Floyd music is captured authentically.” The show features memorable classics from Pink Floyd’s best-loved albums including Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall and Wish You Were Here. Geelong Youth Choir will add local flavour to the show when it appears on stage for a medley and The Wall. Experience Floyd plays Geelong Performing Art Centre’s Costa Hall on 3 September.

FINALLY FRIDAY LOVE ME TENDER: Elvis impersonator Max Pellicano.
SHELL CLUB
‘Incarnation’ has the King’s moves Critics have described Max Pellicano, who will perform in Geelong this month, as Elvis “resurrected” after his three decades performing as the King. The New York impersonator said he was humbled to be regarded as an “incarnation” of Elvis. “I don’t know if it’s true, but it is nice to hear,” he told the Indy. “I do my best to recreate him on stage - not only with the songs and his voice, but with his movements. And his personality and the great humour he had - he was really an entertainer.” Pellicano started singing Elvis songs when he was 11 years old and spent years studying and practising the King’s moves. “I would grab videotapes and slow them down to watch his movements. You can only really do it by watching it in slow motion,” he said. “I’d also tape his songs and slow them down to get every inflexion in his accent and all that - I’ve spent a lot of time in front of the television trying to learn it.” Fast-forward a few decades and Pellicano is celebrating his 25th anniversary of performing as Elvis in Australia. “Definitely coming to Australia was the big highlight for me,” he said. “I never expected to perform overseas. I went to a Catholic school in New York and we used to learn about Australia in geography class, so performing here has been fantastic.” Despite his uncanny resemblance to the King, Pellicano admitted no-one can be “exactly” like him. “Elvis is Elvis and nobody will ever be Elvis some of my own personality comes through.” Even his costumes are exact replicas made by Elvis’ personal tailor Bill Below. “It’s all part of the show; it kind of makes it. When you walk up on stage you really feel like the King,” Pellicano said. Pellicano encouraged people to “stick around after the show”. “I’d like to say hi to them.” Elvis to the Max plays Geelong Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 31 August.

COURSES & CAREERS
Looking to learn
New Skills New Career New Role at Work Whatever your reason for study is, we’ve got you covered with a range of courses and traineeships.
Now is a great time to look at planning a future career, getting that dreamed-of qualification and gaining the skills needed for employment. Lack of funding often stops people from changing careers or upskilling. Recent exemptions to the VTG eligibility guidelines for not-for-profit Learn Local organisations mean that even those who have previously accessed funded training could be eligible for further funded training with Diversitat Training. Those who are looking at upskilling their current role or who want to change their career can do so now - but only up until December 2016. Now is also a great time to consider upskilling, whether it is to take on more responsibility at work, refresh knowledge and skills, and gain further career options or simply to gain recognition for a role already being undertaken in the workplace without any formal qualification. Diversitat Training is committed to helping people achieve their best and in doing so they can enhance their career path and future employment prospects. Its qualifications are nationally recognised by employers across Australia and delivered by trainers who are all industry skilled and trained.
Looking to upskill or change your career? Ask us about exemptions to eligibity.*

Body Shop Paint Supplies’ Adam Guglielmi.
Everything is in stock for work and fine finish on classic cars Doing up a car is a great Aussie tradition and one that Adam Guglielmi is doing his level best to ensure remains an institution in Geelong. Owner of South Geelong’s Bodyshop Paint Supplies, Adam offers a one-stop shop with everything that anyone looking to restore or upgrade a car might need. Or a boat, or industrial machinery as well – he’s got everything covered. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is an auto paint retailer, dealing with all aspects of the panel trade as well as industrial coatings for machinery or boats. “We’ve got all the stuff they’ll need, everything from start to finish – and all the right stuff so they’re not led down the wrong track,” Adam says. “We want to make sure they get everything right the first time, so it’s more affordable and we’ll do great deals, too.” The staff are all fully qualified tradesmen and more than happy to point customers in the right direction to achieve the best results possible. Bodyshop Paint Supplies is at 5/131 Fyans St, South Geelong, phone 5229 1928.
Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

However, at times, and dependent on weather, you may notice some odour, high flaring, dust and / or noise over this period, particularly at the beginning of the project in late August / early September and at the end of the project, late October / early November. There will also be increased traffic to and from site during this time. SPORT Big weekend for big Cat By Luke Voogt The Cats will play for a home final in their last and yet another must-win game against Melbourne at Simonds Stadium on Sunday. A win will secure their position in the top four but a big winning margin could clinch a top two spot and a home final. With two interstate teams in the four, a home final could give the Cats the advantage they need to advance directly to the preliminary finals. A loss could see them exit the top four and lose their finals second chance. The game has extra significance for brave Cats defender Tom Lonergan who addressed the media on Wednesday 24 August. It’s 10 years since Lonergan lost a kidney after a sickening on-field collision against Melbourne at Simonds Stadium in his seventh AFL game. “The ball was over my head, I went back to mark it,” Lonergan said, recalling the incident. “But the speed of the AFL ... really caught up with me and it turned out to be not a very happy ending.” Lonergan said the Cats could not afford to be inconsistent in the finals as they had been throughout the season. “That’s the key to it - putting together four good quarters. We’ve got some good opposition this week which is good practice for that.” But the game is not even the biggest event for Lonergan this weekend, with his wife Kim due to give birth to their first child on Saturday 27 August. Lonergan said being in Geelong would give him “some breathing space” if the baby arrived unexpectedly around game day. Defender Lachie Henderson’s absence will put pressure on Lonergan and Geelong’s backline against Melbourne’s talls including in-form ruckman Max Gawn who has often pushed forward this season. Henderson underwent minor surgery on his right knee on Wednesday after scans on Tuesday revealed damage requiring an arthroscopy.
ON THE BITE Chris Pitman
SURGERY: Injured big Cat Lachie Henderson. His absence will also deprive Chris Scott of an extra option up forward. Scott threw Henderson and fellow defender Harry Taylor up forward in Geelong’s comefrom-behind win against Richmond. Henderson also started forward in the Cats’ win against Brisbane at the Gabba on Sunday, booting two goals in before he was injured in the
final quarter. “He’s been playing some fantastic football,” Lonergan said. “We’ll miss him but I think like most teams one steps down and another steps up.” Geelong’s general manager of football Steve Hocking said the pre-finals bye could help Henderson recover in time for the finals.
Knocking on door of finals, but Warriors held to a draw By Josip Zilic Frustrated, would be the most suitable way to explain the feeling after the North Geelong Warriors were unable to make their dominance pay and come away with all three points in their home clash against Moreland City which ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Focus quickly turns to Moreland Zebras now in order to maintain the prospect of continued pressure on league leader St Albans after they won 1-0 over Sunshine to have a three-point lead with two rounds to go. Zebras are a well drilled unit, and over the years have proved a difficult side to break down. Coming off a 1-0 win against out-of-form Whitt-

lesea, they halted a short losing streak and remain within a sniff of surging into the top two to push a play off chance. Last time the Warriors met the Zebras, it ended in a 0-0 draw where an undermanned North Geelong almost snuck away with a win late in the match. North Geelong will be looking to its finishing this week as their dominance last week didn’t provide any joy on the scoreboard. Chances in the first half that were previously paying off didn’t come to fruition for Michael Anderson and Kene Eze and were well saved by Man-of-the-Match Moreland keeper Kieran MacDowell. In the second half, Vito Cichello ruled the
midfield to combine with Matt Thorne on several occasions driving advantageous passes to the attacking areas, however the trend continued and gilt edged opportunities to Juso Julardzija, Anderson, Eze and Thorne were all spurned. Coach Micky Colina explained that a very disappointed dressing awaited him at the end of the match. "The lads are shattered they didn’t make it pay, but don’t dismay, they are a resilient mob and will come out next week to atone and continue their push for promotion”. This weekend’s round 27 clash is the last home for the Warriors before they head into the final round away to Ballarat.
Snapper fever has started to take hold on local anglers, with the species’ annual influx into Corio and Port Phillip bays just around the corner. A few keen anglers have found a fix close to home on Corio Bay over the past week when schools of large snapper congregated near the old Yarra Street Pier. Anglers fishing from boats marked snapper on their sounders then either anchored up and pitched baits or cast soft plastics to marked fish. Both tactics were successful on fish to over 7kg. The most exciting news was that landbased anglers also got in on the action. The waterfront section of Yarra Street hosted all the action, with pilchard baits the most effective method for land-based anglers. Squid remained plentiful for angler who drifted near the Clifton Springs Dell in 3m to 4m with size 3 jigs in a white colouration. Bag limit captures of squid were common last week, especially when the wind eased enough to allow a nice slow. Whiting were also still available in the area, with fish average 35cm taking pippie baits. Queenscliff Harbour was another good option for land-based anglers. Silver trevally and Australian salmon to 1kg were taken in the cut on soft plastics like Gulp Turtleback worms or Z-Man 2.5” grubs on a 1/6oz jig head fished around a change of tide. The Barwon River estuary provided plenty of juvenile salmon, mullet and whiting for anglers fishing small pieces of prawn and pippie. Local surf reaches really fired up with salmon to 2kg inhaling lures. The usual locations fished well while fishing a runin tide on sunset tending to produce the greater numbers of salmon. Southern bluefin tuna were still on the cards off Port Fairy. Casting small stick bait lures into the surface commotion resulted in fish, while trolling hard body lures around patches of working birds was also productive. Lake Purrumbete continued cementing its reputation as a trophy brown trout fishery. Almost every day in the past week a brown trout over 4kg was captured. Trolling the east bank at first or last light was definitely a standout approach while casting also worked but required anglers to put in plenty of time.
