Where is your favourite place to go in the Dandenong Ranges? “I like to go to the different tea and coffee places that are around the area, even up to Olinda and as far as Mount Evelyn – it’s a really lovely area.“ – Lynette Mitchell, Belgrave.
Hills are rich in history By JODIE SYMONDS
What is your favourite thing about the Dandenong Ranges? “It’s the vibe. It’s fantastic. We had the End of the Line festival here and there were thousands of people ... from all nationalities ... and no fights, and for two days. It was great. That’s the sort of thing we breed here.“ – Baba Desi, Belgrave.
A LONG deep breath will fill the nostrils with a rich aroma of fresh, crisp air - those who have been to the Dandenong Ranges would know this well. According to author of The Dandenong Ranges, Nick Anchen, the hills are well-known for their series of ridges and gullies, thick forest greenery, tourist attractions and agricultural land. Botanist Daniel Bruce was credited as being the first European to explore the Dandenongs in the early 1840s; and it wasn’t long before cattle runs were established for explorers to seek gold in Monbulk, Emerald and Gembrook.
In 1958, gold was first discovered in the Monbulk area which sparked a gold rush at ‘Emerald Diggings’, better known now as Butterfield Reserve. Since the 1950s, the Puffing Billy Railway, Cuckoo Restaurant, Tesselaar Tulip Farm and William Ricketts Sanctuary have been, and still are, popular tourist attractions in the hills. The Kokoda Track Memorial and the Thousand Steps have also been popular destinations for visitors and fitness-fanatics to pay their respects to all who service in the Kokoda Track Campaign. On 18 December, 1900, Puffing Billy Railway’s first official steam
train made its way into Gembrook station. For the first 30 years of the train running, it was used to carry large quantities of fruit, livestock and dairy products. The Dandenongs has provided farmers with rich soil and a cool climate for decades, which made it the perfect destination for growing a wide variety of crops. Monbulk’s biggest employer was Daniel Camm’s jam factory, established in 1914, and later renamed Monbulk Preserves. Monbulk preserves became successful in exporting overseas, particularly to England. Nobelius Gembrook Nurseries was
the largest agricultural property in the Dandenongs; in fact, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere in its prime time. Tourism has been a significant part of the Dandenong Ranges, particularly during the early days of settlement, where thousands of tourists would catch a train to Upper Ferntree Gully. The tourists were then met by coach-drawn horses to take them to their guest houses around the hills. Today, tourism still plays a vital part in showcasing the magnificent ranges, and visitors can be assured there will always be something interesting to do or see.

Marathon effort for our Simon a two-wheel trip BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT SELBY raised road cyclist Simon Clarke was the last man standing and the only one from the Australian road cycling team that finished the Olympic men’s road race this month. Clarke finished 25th in the men’s road race and was joined by fellow Australians Rohan Dennis and Scott Bowden who abandoned the event midway through to focus on their next respective events. The 237.5 km road race started and finished at the famous Copacabana Beach and traversed Rio’s verdant coastline before a 5000m climb. Clarke was originally an 11th hour replacement to the Australian cycling team before the Olympics, substituting for the injured Simon Gerrans who broke his collarbone while competing in the Tour de France. Attending Selby primary school and Billanook College, Clark acknowledged the Dandenong’s and how they helped him in his success.
HOME to some of Australia’s most iconic destinations, the Dandenong Ranges is a popular region for tourists. Ask a visitor about the Hills and they will instantly mention that famous ol’ icon Puffing Billy, the breath-taking scenery or the countless small niche shops and bustling cafes. It’s an area where the locals are relaxed and friendly, making the Dandenong Ranges the ultimate getaway for those with busy lifestyles. For this ‘Best of’ edition, we have tried to bring you the best of the Dandenong Ranges, highlighting what makes the hills so special and unique. It could be the many eateries, the Tesselaar Tulip Farm or even the Rhododendron Gardens. What about the yarn bombing, the farm land or the Sherbrooke Forest? Just some of the articles we have prepared for you include historical facts on the Dandenong Ranges, as well as a story on an ambitious Hills local who has a unique solution for coffee ground waste. If you haven’t visited the Hills recently, this edition will give you every reason (not that you need one) to do a day-trip on the weekend - you may even see some iconic local characters, such as the Belgrave Wizard, Baba Desi. The Dandenong Ranges is a mesmerising place filled with creative and passionate individuals. Thanks go out to all of these amazing people.
Many cyclists travel hours to get to the Dandenongs, but I just head out my front door… “Many cyclists travel hours to get to the Dandenongs, but I just head out my front door,” he said. His grand finish in 25th position in the Olympics men’s road race marks a stellar career for Clarke, which has included competing at the Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games in 2013 and being awarded the polka dot jersey at the Tour de France in 2012. Since he was 11 Clarke has been competing in various competitions and in 2006 he competed in the first of six senior world championships. Clarke said finishing the Olympic road race in 25th position has been one of his greatest feats.

Cockatoo rallies for By JODIE SYMONDS
What’s your favourite thing about the Dandenong Ranges? “You’re asking a woman who’s in love with the Dandenong Ranges! I reckon the people. I find it’s a really good community, good community spirit.“ – Lisa van Muller, Menzies Creek.
Where is your favourite place to go in the Dandenong Ranges? “My favourite place for coffee is Son of Run – I can listen to music … and I collect records and music as well.“ – Patsy Killeen, Sassafras.
FORMER Cockatoo CFA captain Graham Simpson said the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre (AWBEC) was a great example of a community bonding together to save the sentimental building. During the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires on 16 February 1983, the former kindergarten building was used for refuge from the blaze. A CFA member for 39 years and chairman of the AWBEC committee, Mr Simpson said the Cardinia Shire Council planned to demolish the carousel-shaped building in 2011. The hugely sentimental building where about 300 frightened people gathered was worth fighting for. After years of fighting for the building to stay, the centrepiece of the town was officially opened in July this year. “The town just rose up and basically said ‘no way’,” he said. “I’ve been with it ever since.” Mr Simpson told the Mail that he often reflected on his involvement with the CFA on Ash Wednesday. It was hot and windy, the perfect conditions for a bushfire. Mr Simpson had finished his shift at the Cockatoo CFA and noticed smoke gathering in the air. “The Cockatoo bushfires broke about 7.30 (pm), and all CFA were committed elsewhere,” Mr Simpson said. “I’d been working during the day since six o’clock that morning and
Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre workers and volunteers. 157262 I ended up not getting some sort of sleep until 43 hours later.” Mr Simpson said the Ash Wednesday bushfires affected the community in more ways than one. He said the devastation of what occurred on the day didn’t hit him until about 12 weeks later. “At the time, I just didn’t think about it,” he said.
“I was outside one day and then all of a sudden I just sat and bawled.” He said it was very emotional. “We have visitors who come and tell us their stories about where they were at the time,” Mr Simpson said. “It gives us the chance to educate others and for them to hear it from someone who was there.” The building is now being used as
an education centre for others to learn about a piece of history that devastated the community. “It’s a magnificent building – from where it was, to where it is now,” Mr Simpson said. “People have to come see it.” Mr Simpson said on 3 September, the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre would be open every weekend from 10am-3pm.

Mushroom business grows on everyone BY PETER DOUGLAS
What’s your favourite thing about the Dandenong Ranges? “I’d say the diversity, the small village feel, the tight community.“ – James Collins, Eltham.
Where is your favourite place to go in the Dandenong Ranges? “I love Monbulk. The township of Monbulk is just beautiful. It’s a little, sort-of rural township but it’s not too far, in terms of services. It’s my favourite place.“ – Lisa Keedle, Ringwood North.
HILLS lad Ryan Creed is aiming to make a positive difference to the environment and encourage sustainable living – one mushroom at a time. Along with co-creator of Life Cykel, Julian Mitchell, Ryan is in the process of developing a viable business model, which includes using coffee grounds to grow delicious mushrooms. The urban mushroom farm model utilises the process in which mushrooms essentially ‘consume’ the coffee grounds as they grow, essentially diverting coffee waste from landfills. Coffee grounds are a major threat to the environment because they are largely disposed of in landfills, where they don’t gain oxygen. Subsequently, the coffee grounds release methane, which seeps through the soil and is released into the atmosphere. Methane is thought to be around 20 times worse than carbon dioxide. Of course, it shouldn’t be forgotten the gourmet oyster
mushrooms that are produced are great-tasting. Ryan grew up in the hills and attended the Menzies Creek Primary School and Emerald Secondary College. He’s also widely known for his exploits on the football field, playing with Emerald during his junior years and then Monbulk Hawks in the seniors. Ryan then enjoyed a stint with VFL club Casey Scorpions, before heading off interstate to play football in Western Australia. He told the Mail it was during his time over in the West when he stumbled on the initiative with his friend, Julian. “It started while we were working in the mines and involved in a ‘veggie patch’ challenge,” he said. “We enjoyed the thrill of growing our own food, and the health and environmental benefits that it brings. “We won the contest and received great feedback ... so we did some more research.” Ryan discovered just how easily you can grow mushrooms; also,
that you can grow them in coffee grounds. He said the environmental benefits are clear. “On average, one coffee shop will accumulate around 40kg of coffee grounds each week,” he said. “In Abbotsford (where they are trying to establish the business), there are around 150 coffee shops in the area.” They said in Melbourne city alone, coffee grounds waste hits thousands of tons annually. With coffee consumption around the world hitting incredible levels, the level of this environmental issue is obvious. But the pair insist it is not just about saving the world, but creating a viable, profitable business model. The Life Cykel model is extremely resourceful, using bicycles to collect the grounds, which operators take to re-purposed shipping containers in which the mushrooms are grown. The shipping containers are fitted out to include humidifiers, temperature control and
monitoring equipment. Also, the Life Cykel ‘Mushroom Boxes’ can be delivered to Australian homes, or to schools to be used as fundraising drives. Ryan said the initiative is perfect for urban environments, both from a logistical and viability perspective. Though, just as importantly, he said they taste great and are extremely nutritious. “There is no coffee taste in the mushroom and no caffeine,” he said. “They are great fried for three minutes with garlic and butter, or great with bacon and eggs.” The pair believe there is huge scope for the Life Cykel model, which they one day hope to take onto a national scale. The benefits to developing countries are also obvious. But first, after gaining some traction in Western Australia, they are aiming to make an impression on the Melbourne market. For more information on Life Cykel, visit www.lifecykel.com.au.

Brendon’s message goes viral BY JODIE SYMONDS A YARRA Junction man last year created an anti-domestic violence video to raise awareness of this prevalent issue. Brendon Murphy was honoured on Australia Day for his ‘Heroes for Zeroes’ video that went viral in September. The clip aimed at bringing men and women together to make a stand against violence in homes. It has had over 8000 views on popular social media site, YouTube.
Featuring members from the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League (YVMDFNL), the video switched between players to get the message across. Mr Murphy told the Mail in January the idea came to him while watching a current affairs program about a woman who was killed by her partner. Reacting to the program, the footballers in the video said it was a “man who should know better, with mates who should know better”. Mr Murphy said in the video that
the only number of acceptable deaths from domestic violence is zero. “At the football, it’s almost hardly spoken about, to be honest, unless there’s a special or something around like that,” Mr Murphy said. Being a father himself to a one-year-old at the time, Mr Murphy said domestic violence was heart-breaking. “I thought ‘geez’, we put our whole lives into these children, and how heart-breaking to have someone just ... it’s just such a waste of life,” he said.
One of the men in the video summed up anti-domestic violence in one sentence; “It is a national disgrace”. The viewer comments on the YouTube video that he had nothing but praise for Mr Murphy. “Don’t mind admitting I had a tear in my eye watching this. Your parents must be very proud, I know I am,” one person commented. “This is what real men should be, not violent thugs!” another commented.

Legacy All the right moves of care BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT
EIGHT year old Lachlan Ruck from Gembrook received a Triple Zero Hero Award earlier this year when he proved invaluable during a family emergency. Lachlan proved he could be counted upon during a crisis when his grandfather, Peter, called triple-zero while he was experiencing a heart attack. While Lachlan didn’t speak to the operator directly he was instrumental in ensuring his grandfather had the best possible chance of survival. He followed the operator’s instructions to the letter, helping get his grandfather’s pills, putting away pets and unlocking the door for paramedics. Lachlan’s mother Amy said she couldn’t be any more proud of him. Emergency Services Minister Jane
BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT BILL Rogers of Belgrave was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his voluntary deeds in June this year. As a volunteer welfare officer at Legacy, Bill diligently works 30-40 hour weeks in Melbourne’s south-east – and at times further abroad - to look after veterans and their families. Though retired, the past president of the rotary club of Belgrave is still volunteering full time by giving back to the community he lives in. The Berwick ex-police officer and Vietnam 7RAR veteran said: “If you live in the community you give back to the community”. He said there’s a great need to look after the recent waves of veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan. But often their families’ struggles were overlooked. “What the families are going through is extremely tough. They’re trying to hold things together.” As a veteran himself, Bill is able to help those veterans who have returned and helps families understand why the returned service people have changed.
Victoria’s brave Junior Triple Zero Heroes remained remarkable cool, calm and collected in emergencies that would have rattled most adults…
Garrett and guest presenter, comedian Dave Hughes presented Lachlan and 28 other children with the Junior Triple Zero Hero award, which is now in its 12th year. “Victoria’s brave Junior Triple Zero Heroes remained remarkable cool, calm and collected in emergencies that would have rattled most adults,” said Ms Garrett.
Lachlan Ruck is flanked by comedian Dave Hughes, triple-0 operator Svetlana, and accompanied by grandmother Karen, mother Amy and grandfather Peter. 155055
David Ashton-Smith said he was truly humbled over the honour. 155473
Dedicated service BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT KALORAMA’S David Ashton-Smith and Marian Pawlik from Mount Evelyn were among almost 600 Australians included in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday honour list, which pays tribute to their dedication to community. Mr Ashton-Smith was recognised for his services to the performing arts and secondary education, while Mr Pawlik was recognised for his service to the Polish community of Victoria. Mr Ashton-Smith’s achievements included being the managing director of the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra, founder of the Ashton-Smith Singers and also being heavily involved in music education at numerous schools, as well as being the adjudicator of various eisteddfods since 1980. He said it was a shock to be among the Australians named but was very excited and humbled to have received the prestigious award. “I’m very humbled and delighted to

A long and notable career his stated his highlights as including the times he worked with Andrea Bocelli and Barry Humphries. At the age of 72 Mr Ashton-Smith said that music was still a large part of his life and he had relished the opportunity to help and develop so many musicians and singers. “Music is still a big part of my life.” “I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to develop musical talents of many young singers and performers, many of whom have gone on to have good careers,” he said. Oscar’s among the brave BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT OSCAR Arrowsmith of Cockatoo was among a distinguished group of Australians who received a Bravery Award this August for an astounding rescue when the family dog attacked his mother. Oscar, who is now 14, was only 10 when the German shepherd attacked his mother, Dana Lyall, while she sat in her office. The attack left Dana with severe injuries that required her to spend four days in hospital. Luckily during the attack Oscar stepped in to distract the dog and eventually after numerous attempts was able to drive the German shepherd off and secure it in the laundry.
Without the bravery that Oscar showed by intervening and driving the dog off Dana holds no doubts that the German shepherd would have killed her. “I’ve recovered now but there’s no doubt the dog would’ve killed me if Oscar didn’t step in,” she said After the attack, Oscar then assisted his mother to the lounge room where he applied first aid and called triple-zero. Oscar became one of 80 Australians who were included on the list that acknowledges Australians who put themselves in harm’s way to assist others in need.

Normie shakes it By Peter Douglas AUSTRALIAN music legend and Vietnam veteran Normie Rowe is set to ‘shake up’ the fund-raising effort for the Seville Memorial War project. Along with fellow ‘60s icon Marcie Jones, Rowe will headline the concert which will take place on Saturday, 17 September, at the Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn. The memorial has been a major project for the Seville Township Group and has received great support from surrounding RSL subbranches, including Mount Evelyn and Lilydale. Rowe told the ‘Mail’ he wanted to do everything possible to help support the memorial. He said smaller memorials had special meaning for him, which started after he visited a site in the small Victorian town of Tongala in the Goulburn Valley. “I was there with a friend, whom I’d met while on tour and under fire in Vietnam,” Rowe said. “I was laying a wreath for a soldier who was killed on my tour of duty; he was from Collie in Western Australia. “Some time after, I happened to be in Collie and dropped in to see the soldier’s mother. “I told her about his little place called Tongala, which was honouring her son.” Rowe said the soldier’s mother was completely unaware of the memorial and she became emotional. “It was one of the most touching moments I’ve ever experienced,” he said. “And that’s why I continue to encourage the smaller memorials, because they mean so much to so many people.” Rowe first rose to prominence in the 1960s as a singer and was once widely deemed Australia’s most popular male star. However, he was conscripted in 1967. He served his tour of duty in Vietnam with distinction, though it curtailed his career and changed
his life forever. “I didn’t ask for it, but I knew it was something that was going to change me and I didn’t walk away from that,” he said. “I (now) speak on behalf of those veterans, when ... the mic is in my hand (and) I have the opportunity to have the floor.” Rowe still enjoys a healthy career in entertainment, but devotes much of his time to staying in contact with other veterans and supporting initiatives such as the Seville memorial. Most recently, he performed in Sydney for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, during which he said many Vietnam-era songs resonated profoundly with the audience. Rowe expected local crowds would enjoy a similar performance. Once completed, the Seville War Memorial will be a glass monument which stands more than three metres high. The memorial will not only carry the names of those from Seville who died while on active service but will have images, letters, poems and stories of those from Seville who served their nation, including the Yarra Valley’s only Victoria Cross recipient, George Ingram VC, MM. Chair of the Seville War Memorial, Anthony McAleer, said the memorial would be a fitting tribute. “This will be a war memorial for the 21st century,” he said. “It will have much more historical detail on it than those built 100 years ago and much of that information will be emotive. “At the same time this memorial will stand as a work of art and as an icon for Seville.” President of the Seville Township Group, Sue McMurdie, said the memorial was just what the community needed. “We’ve been knocked by the closure of IGA, the Bendigo Bank branch and Stockfeed,” she said. “Building something that reflects on our heritage and gives us a place to come together as a community on days of nation significance should give us all a lift.”
Not scared of this scarecrow EXCITEMENT is in the air at Montrose as Sarah Court Preschool prepares for its Healthy Harvest Festival on 10 September. To celebrate, many local businesses, schools and kinder families are building scarecrows in the lead-up to the festival. Tala needs a helping paw By Victoria Stone-Meadows MANY members of the Warburton community would be familiar with the friendly face of Tala, an eight-year-old black Labrador who helps her owner Ned Kelly around town. Tala is an assistance dog for Mr Kelly who suffers from PTSD, depression and anxiety from his time in the Navy but now she needs the community’s help. Tala has developed a problem that stops her from being able to put weight on one of her back legs. “If I go into a turn, she gives me an affectionate nibble or cuddles, and turns my attention to her rather than to what is causing problems,” Mr Kelly said. “She is just a joy to have
around no matter the circumstances.” Mr Kelly doesn’t have the means to pay for her surgery to get her back to running around like a pup again. Eve Marso, also of Warburton, has enlisted the help of a friend to lend a hand to Mr Kelly to get Tala the help she so desperately needs. Ms Marso has set up a fundraising effort to help Mr Kelly afford the vet appointments and treatment Tala needs to get her back on all four legs. “This help and to have Tala’s vet bills paid would be phenomenal,” Mr Kelly said. “It would bring a tear to my eye to see her back on all four legs again. “She is otherwise a really happy and healthy dog and has adapted to using three legs and it doesn’t really slow her down;
she still loves to swim but can’t run like she used to.” Mr Kelly said the help that had been offered by Ms Marso and the wider Warburton community had overwhelmed him a little bit. “This restores my faith in human nature,” he said. “The community of Warburton are a really good, loving and healing community and I thank everyone for their support since I came to Warburton, just such a lovely bunch of people.” Tala has an x-ray at Animal Aid in Coldstream on Wednesday 1 September where Mr Kelly will find out exactly what is causing the problem and how it can be fixed. To find out how you can help Tala, visit her Facebook page by searching ‘Tala Kelly’ and contributing to the cause.

YARRA Ranges Council will spend just over half a million dollars building change facilities designed for people with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. New facilities at Lillydale Lake, Monbulk Aquatic Centre, Yarra Glen Playspace and the Yarra Centre will allow people with disabilities and their carers to utilise purpose-built change rooms. The extra features in the specialised change rooms include

Despite the potential of extra maintenance costs, Cr Callanan said council was committed to providing these facilities so everyone had the opportunity to enjoy recreation in the Yarra Ranges. “This project is important to council and the community as it improves access for and inclusion of community members who have high care requirements,” he said. The project is expected to cost $504,000 and be completed in November this year.

height adjustable adult-sized changing benches, a ceiling hoist to help lift people out of wheelchairs, and extra space to accommodate carers. Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jason Callanan said the new facilities will not replace the existing toilet and change rooms but there is potential for the new facilities to cost more in the long-term. “Council is not replacing any existing facilities,” he said. “These are additional facilities so there will be a potential extra cost to maintain them.”
YARRA Ranges Athletics Club is joining forces with Lillydale Lake Park Run and Yarra Ranges Shire for their summer season launch this year. On Saturday 10 September, the athletics club will have athletics equipment set up at Lillydale Lake for interested people to get to know what the club is all about. Yarra Ranges Athletics Club President Michael Clarke said the club was excited to get out into the community.
“We thought rather than invite people to see us at the track, we would bring athletics to them so we are bringing activates and equipment to the lake,” he said. Yarra Ranges Athletics are the only Athletics Club in Victoria where the senior and junior branches are managed by the same committee. Mr Clarke is hoping by combining the family-friendly Lillydale Lake Park run with the athletics club for a day, people will see the family-oriented side
of the club. “We want to help educate local people that if you join the athletics club they can make it family sport,” he said. “Yarra Ranges Athletics is a club for the whole family and for people of all abilities, from people looking to be active as well as serious competitors.” The Yarra Ranges Athletics season starts in early October and Mr Clarke invites anyone who has an interest in athletics to come down to Lillydale Lake and have a go.

Healthy har vest feast By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE cold winter days have not frozen out the Montrose Community from celebrating the Healthy Harvest Festival on 10 September. Held at the Sarah Court Preschool, the festival celebrates local living with local businesses, community groups, schools and families coming together. Festival co-ordinator Maryka Manatunga said the festival was about creating a real sense of community cohesion. “The program is all about partnering with our local businesses and our wonderful schools and community groups to create a sense of excitement and community comradery,” she said. “It’s a fun way to be creative with our wonderful community.” The main event of the festival will be the scarecrows; built by the community and sponsored by local businesses and organisations. “Montrose Men’s Shed made all the scarecrow frames for us, the CFA, Football Club, the township group, primary schools, Japara’s occasional care program and even residents from Mercy Place aged care facility will help to make the Healthy Harvest Festival scarecrows a reality,” The scarecrows were set to appear around Montrose in the third week of

An appetite for more FOOD is Free Tecoma (FIFT) recently celebrated receiving 1000 ‘likes’ on Facebook. Supporters created a mural of dry and fresh goods to mark this milestone. The venture was only launched last October but has already had huge support from local residents and people who need a source of free food. FIFT is a community initiative and collaboration between Tecoma Uniting Church and The Hills Food Frontier assisted with funding from the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The aim is to reach out into the local community to provide a source of free, healthy, and where possible, organic foods. Food is stored in a Coolgardie safe on the verandah of Tecoma Uniting Church, 1566 Burwood Highway. Space is provided for dry goods and fresh produce, and volunteers check the safe regularly. There is also a message book where people are encouraged to write comments. The cupboard is never empty. Community members are encouraged to leave any surplus fruit, vegetables, herbs, seedlings and seeds, and dry goods, and/or take what they need. For further information about the project and movement, look up Food Is Free Tecoma on Facebook and also see www.hillsfoodfrontier.com or www.foodisfreeproject.org
POLICE are appealing for information after an East Warburton man was robbed at knifepoint in Lilydale last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between 2am and 2.15am on Thursday 25 August, a 27-year-old East Warburton man was in the laneway between Lilydale’s Crown Hotel and a Westpac bank branch when he was grabbed around the throat and punched by an unknown person. The person demanded the victim’s wallet and an altercation took place, where the person then produced a flick knife. Det Sgt Smithwick said the man handed over cash. He said police did not yet have a description of the offender. Anyone with more information, or who may have witnessed the incident, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Lake had ‘all-clear’ IN the Tuesday, 23 August, 2016 edition of the ‘Mail’, it was incorrectly reported that Lilydale Lake was adversely affected by blue-green algae in January this year. This appeared on page 3 of the ‘Mount Evelyn Mail’ in the article, ‘More algal blooms likely as weather turns warmer’. While Melbourne Water did test Lilydale Lake for blue-green algae, it was determined the levels were below thresholds that posed a health concern. The ‘Mail’ apologises for any inconvenience.

Vision is needed AT Yarra Ranges Council, we want to know about your long-term vision for Yarra Ranges. We are encouraging the community to take part in an extensive ‘Yarra Ranges - The Big Picture’ community consultation process as part of this council’s effort to engage more and listen more to our community. This council understands that we are here to ensure that you continue to enjoy, work and live in this great region. This process is a perfect opportunity to let us know what you would like to see in the Yarra Ranges. This means sharing your feedback and ideas about projects considered to be key to the future of our region. Your comments will help us develop a council plan to guide the new council that will be formed following the upcoming council elections this October. I encourage everyone to share your ‘big picture ideas’ to improve and sustain what you love most in your community.
From my
desk Jason Callahan
Yarra Ranges mayor/Chandler Ward
The Big Picture consultation will build on feedback already received through a recent survey, where council asked the community why they live, work and visit the Yarra Ranges. As a result, we know that people love the environment, healthy living and the sense of community, among other things. We want to identify projects we can explore in the future that will build on and protect the reasons why we love our region. By taking part you are helping us to ensure we can continue to enjoy being part of the Yarra Ranges community. Yarra Ranges - The Big Picture com-
munity engagement is being undertaken through a number of platforms, including an online survey at http://oursay.org/ yarraranges/bigpicture, a paper-based survey and four community forums. The final community conference will take place at Coldstream on Wednesday 31 August. Arrive at 5.45pm for a 6pm start until 8pm. Dinner is provided. The community forums have provided an opportunity for residents to put forward their ideas and discuss them with other people in the community. We want to achieve a general consensus as to what matters most for the community as a whole. Help guide council in the decisionmaking process and drive council priorities for the next 10 years. Hard copy survey forms are available at our Community Links. A hotline is open to take messages from community members: 9020 4503.

They’re sew right LYREBIRD Quilters member Cheryl Meyer from Emerald has proven she has the skills to sew up the competition. At the recent Victorian Quilters’ Quilt Showcase 2016, held as part of the Melbourne Craft and Quilt Fair, Cheryl won first place in the ‘First Time Entrant’ category and ‘Excellence in Domestic Machine Quilting - Amateur’. Her ‘Caswell Quilt’ featured 30 blocks of machine-appliqued floral work and was quilted on her domestic sewing machine. It is a beautiful quilt and took
many hours to complete. Cheryl also attends the Macclesfield Craft Group, which meets at the Macclesfield Community Church Hall on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 1pm to 4pm. For more information, contact 0418 685 942. The Lyrebird Quilters meet on the third Saturday of each month at the Belgrave Library meeting room from 1pm to 4pm. YARRA Ranges Council has committed to seeking wider community consultation regarding the rezoning of the Cave Hill Quarry site at Lilydale. Though much work lies ahead for stakeholders, the decision represents a step forward towards a major residential development on the site, which would bring a significant population and economic boost to the region. The 163ha site, located south-west of the town centre, is owned by Sibelco Australia, which last year ceased mining operations at the site. Sibelco has been working with the Places Victoria to prepare a master plan for the former quarry site. However, reservations exist not only over the residential development, but surrounding infrastructure improvements needed to support such an increase in population. Central to this is the construction of a railway station between Lilydale and Mooroolbark. Sibelco representatives fronted the council’s Tuesday 23 August meeting to field questions from councillors, with many councillors voicing some support, yet concern over the lack of progress regarding infrastructure. Melba Ward councillor Terry Avery was particularly vocal and said greater advocacy and community feedback was required, though he believed the time was right to seek out greater input. “This is an important development; I have no doubt it would be a fantastic outcome for our community,” Cr Avery said.
“Of course, I don’t think anybody would want this to remain just as a hole in the ground. “But I think it’s also important that we get this out to our community so they can have an input as well.” Cr Avery said it was time to take this project to the next level. “Sibelco ... have engaged with community ... done the master plan ... but I think the time has come where we need to get this out and get our community talking ... because they are going to be severely affected,” Cr Avery said. Cr Avery also used the opportunity to voice frustrations over lack of progress over the infrastructure issue. This included infrastructure projects which he said were “non-negotiables”, comprising a new railway station, bridge upgrades at Mooroolbark and Hull Road, and road network improvements. Cr Avery said these items were spoken about four years ago, yet there was no real progress. “If we introduce a few thousand people into this area, there’s going to be a proportion of them that are going to want to catch a train,” he said. “So there is no train station proposed and they’re going to have to drive - and they’ll be driving to Lilydale or Mooroolbark, whose railway station car parks are already overflowing because of insufficient space. “I acknowledge ... (they’ve) worked really hard to get a good outcome for our community, but we’re still a big fat nowhere ... we still haven’t got that crucial infrastructure.
1236862-CB35-16
“I live in that area ... I know there are traffic jams and this will only make it worse.” Cr Avery put forward an alternate recommendation to provide in-principle support to progress the proposed amendment. However, conditions apply. These include an agreement being reached regarding the provision of a road connection between the quarry site and Melba Avenue. Also, a traffic impact assessment report and the finalisation of a storm water management plan. Meanwhile, Cr Avery was also critical of the State Government’s lack of engagement over the project, particularly given it has been deemed to be of state significance. The alternate recommendation includes a provision that council advocates to the State Government regarding the need for a new train station and upgrades to the Hull and Mooroolbark roads intersection. “Well, if it’s of state significance, where is the State,” Cr Avery said. “Put your hand in your pocket and make some commitment. “It seems the government can spend millions of dollars on our sky rail for Frankston and we can’t even get a railway station out here in the outer east ... and that is an absolute travesty.” The provisions also include that council urges the State Government to commit to the timely construction of these infrastructure works. The alternate recommendation passed unanimously.

Letters Vote for business REGIONAL and suburban businesses should be very concerned about the Victorian Government’s proposed changes to their voting rights in council elections. Some of the changes, if enacted, will restrict votes for business owners and operators and hamper their ability to vote for representatives in the local councils in which their livelihood depends on. The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry believes that if you pay rates to have your place of business in a municipality, you are entitled to have your say. The Local Government Act has not been reviewed for more than 25 years and we welcome the opportunity to build stronger communities across the state. Business is a key part of local communities in regional and suburban Victoria, and it deserves to retain its voting entitlements in council elections. We will be strongly advocating on behalf of our members to ensure their rights remain unchanged. The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, established in 1851, is the most influential business organisation in Victoria, informing and servicing more than 15,000 members, customers and clients around the state. Mark Stone AM, Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive.
Let’s catch up RECENT government announcements show that by 2018, Victoria and Tasmania might be the only states to not have a deposit system on cans and bottles. All the other states and territories have recently made announcements saying they will implement this much-needed litter reform. It’s time for Victoria to catch up

SPORTING clubs in Monbulk are being urged to apply for a VicHealth funding grant, which will help open more doors for females to play the sports they love. Member for Monbulk, James Merlino, on Wednesday 23 August, announced applications for VicHealth’s Active Club Grants program are now open to community sports clubs in Monbulk. The VicHealth grants program aims to boost access to grassroots sport, so that more people can enjoy the benefits of a healthier and happier lifestyle. In 2016-'17, two levels of grants - up to $3000 or up to $10,000 - are available for clubs establishing new activities, competitions and programs that encourage more women and girls to get involved in physical activity, or which are starting up a social or modified sport program. Modified sports are less-structured, increasing opportunities. Mr Merlino said he wanted more people in Monbulk to embrace a healthy lifestyle, no matter their age or ability. “I urge local clubs and sporting organisations to apply for a VicHealth grant to establish new teams, programs or competitions for women, or to start up a modified sport program,” he said. Applications for VicHealth’s Active Club Grants close on Friday 23 September. To apply, visit www.vichealth.gov. au/activeclub.
Milk of unkindness THE billion-dollar dairy industry is doing its utmost to brainwash school children into believing that cows’ breast milk is a ‘natural human food’ that we ‘need’ for strong bones. The Picasso Cow program - as featured in the ‘Mail’ article ‘Milking their art’ (23 August, 2016) - is a program disguised as a fun activity and is part of this brainwashing. The truth is that cows’ milk is not a natural human food. Like all mothers' milk, it is intended solely for the nourishment of the mother’s newborn baby. In this case, her calf. One thing students won’t be taught in this program is that each year the industry deliberately brings 700,000 baby calves into the world for the sole purpose of immediately killing them in order to steal their milk. As for ‘needing’ milk for strong bones, the countries with the highest incidence of bone fractures and osteoporosis are the countries with the highest consumption of dairy. In addition to this, scientific studies suggest dairy products may be linked to increased risk of prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and possibly ovarian and breast cancer. Don’t be duped by this ruthless industry. The only ones who need cows’ milk - and the only ones with a right to it - are calves. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.

Have your say on conservation THE future management of the Yellingbo Conservation Area will be discussed at two community drop-in sessions next month. The area includes land that is licensed to landowners for cattle grazing. Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) Regional Manager, Rod Anderson, said there are 197 Crown Land grazing licences along the streamside that DELWP plans to phase out by July 2018. This will be in order to establish the new Yellingbo Conservation Area.
“These community sessions will enable landholders with a grazing licence to ask any questions they may have,” he said. “The conservation area was recommended by the Victorian Environment Assessment Council to provide a network of wildlife corridors, protected waterways, and consolidate the fragmented reserves under one land manager. “The conservation area will also better protect two of Victoria’s state emblems, the threatened Helmeted Honeyeater and Leadbeater’s Possum.”
The sessions will include staff from DELWP, Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water and the Country Fire Authority (CFA). The sessions will be held on Saturday, 3 September, at Upper Yarra Family Centre from 10am to 1pm. Also on Wednesday, 7 September, from 6pm to 9pm at the Parks Victoria office at 6/7 - 9 Symes Road. If you are unable to attend and would like further information, contact enviroplan.portphillip@delwp.vic.gov.au or phone 9210 9448.

UPWEY High School students are one step closer to having use of fantastic new facilities, with the appointment of an architect to start work on plans for a major upgrade. The work includes modernising school buildings, additional basketball courts and a new performing arts centre. The centre will be home for the Dandenong Ranges Music Council, while the courts will help local sports clubs. Monbulk MP James Merlino said it was an exciting time. “Appointing the architect is the first step towards delivering the modern, safe and stimulating facilities that staff and students at Upwey High School deserve,” he said. MAGGIE’S Plan is a career high-point for both star Greta Gerwig and writer-director Rebecca Miller. Independent-minded Maggie (Gerwig) initially plans to become a single mother by impregnating herself with donor sperm, but complications emerge when she falls in love with the passionate academic John (Ethan Hawke). Tender, funny and poignant, Maggie’s Plan is a superblywritten depiction of how messy
love can be. The characters in Maggie’s Plan are remarkably nuanced and humanly flawed. Gerwig is magnetic as Maggie, and the film’s mood shifts organically from delight at her and John’s intense bond to deep sympathy for Maggie in her growing unhappiness and John’s inattentiveness as a husband. The supporting cast is amazing, with comedy masters Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph and the scene-stealing Julianne Moore all providing further levity and pathos. The narrative feels deliber-
ately like it’s moving in a circle, but still feels fresh and lively throughout. As Maggie executes an intricate scheme to resolve her mistake and get John back together with his ex-wife Georgette (Moore), twists and setbacks abound, borne from fickle, conflicted hearts. With great characters and outstanding depth, Maggie’s Plan is one of the most authentic, touching films of the year, and also indicates that Gerwig does her best work when not directed by creative/romantic partner Noah Baumbach. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Store’s part of the town’s fabric of a family business?’ Andrew says: “Strong family values, a loyal team and staff who share those values and honest dealings with our loyal customers. Also, offering value, style, quality and service at the right price”. The King family has seen many changes in retail habits, but has maintained a “steady as she goes” attitude, that their customers always know, ‘that they can get it at Kings’. Being a member of the Mensland group of stores, Ronald King maintains the integrity that customers rely on when choosing where to shop. The association with the Mensland group gives the business access to a wide pool of fashion labels that are only available to independent retailers. Andrew King is always excited by the change of seasons and the new ranges that come month by month, which have been selected up to 6-8 months in advance. At this time of year, there are bargains to be found and fresh styles to enjoy. Not to forget who helped you to get where you are. ‘Thanks dad’.

MR Ron King is proud of his achievement of being a successful retailer in both Lilydale and Croydon, which has progressed from humble beginnings to the well-established icon in the menswear trade. It has been at least 15 years since Ron retired, but he regularly helps out with deliveries between Croydon and Lilydale. Andrew King, Ron’s son, is now in charge of running the business and is based in the Croydon store. Jacob King, Andrew’s son, manages the Lilydale store. They’re the best on the tables IMPALA Billiards has been a proudly family-owned business in the area for over 30 years now, manufacturing their unique and long-lasting billiard and snooker tables for both competition and home use. They take great pride in their product, and the quality and craftsmanship can be seen throughout the range of items they build. From the word go, they are involved
in every aspect of the build from their production base in Bayswater: from the first cut of the timber, to the build itself, the coating of the timber, the upholstery of the cloth and then to the final installation in your home. Being present throughout is something that they really find their customers feel comfortable with because they can keep in contact with them at any time.
Customers are not dealing with individual salespeople and delivery drivers who are unfamiliar with every aspect of the process. Over the years, they have grown to the demands of customers to also provide custom-made furniture such as bars, dining and coffee tables, bar stools and bench seats, and also reclothing and entire billiard restoration. When you first walk through the
door at Impala, you are blown away by the amount of stock that they carry to cater to your Holy Grail of Man Caves. From metal signs to lighting, to darts and accessories; licensed barware and ‘so much more’. The professional players aren’t forgotten either; they have over 100 cues to choose from in their stock range. And if you’re after something more unique, they can generally find it with
a quick phone call. You can find a range of their items on their website, or follow their Facebook page for day-to-day products and specials that they have on offer. EMERALD GOLF THE rain had ceased, the sun shone on the top of the clouds, and underfoot made squelchy noises at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday when a round of Stableford was ordered. Captain Dean Shannon (14) showed the rest of the sorry bunch how the game should be played when he strolled in with that ‘I am a winner’ look as he produced his card with 40 points. That smug look was well and truly justified.
Seppy Krummenacher (22) topped the chart in B Grade with his 37 points before heading to Europe for a couple of months. Peter Glasscock (14) was the only other player to beat his handicap to score 37 points. Glasscock was nearest the pin on the 4th, John Fisher the 7th, Peter Clowes the 12th, Dave Aitken the 13th and Leigh Morison scooped the pool on the pro pin 18th. After a titanic struggle in the ladies Stableford, it finally come down to the wire with
Gracie White heading the field closely followed by Philippa Crossley. Wednesday’s Overly Floppy Golf was also a Stableford event which saw Ian Scott given the rest of the mob a right kicking when his 41 points topped the list. One back and looking almost good was Geoff Whittaker on 40, followed by Mick Petrie on 39 and Ken Sumsion carded 36 points. Next Saturday play is for the VGL September monthly medal.

Motoring Bash for a good cause THE Children’s Charity this month announced that its 26th Variety Vic Bash raised more than $1.3 million for Victorian children in need. The final night of celebration was held in Darwin on Saturday, 20 August, to announce the figure and congratulate all those involved in achieving the incredible total. In 2016, the Variety Vic Bash traversed more than 4500km from Melbourne, travelling through the heart of Australia. More than 250 loud and proud entrants took part in the epic trip from the bottom to the top of Australia, stopping in at many iconic places along the way, such as the Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs and Katherine - just to name a few. Each year, the huge charity convoy visits local schools and organisations and injects funds into local communities when they stop for lunch or dinner along the way. This year, the fund-raisers made two stops to pres-
ent special grants in Maldon and Elliot. Variety Bash Development Manager, Julie Baxter said much effort went into the cause. “Our entrants spend countless hours each year raising funds for disadvantaged children, and to announce a total like this is the best way to say thankyou,” she said. The bash can inject up to $35,000 per stop along the route, while these funds enable local community groups to do great work in improving their infrastructure or initiating projects in schools. The Variety Bash is Australia’s largest and longestrunning motoring event, which has raised over $200 million for children in need across Australia since its inception in 1985. Variety is a national notfor-profit organisation that helps children who are sick, disadvantaged or who have special needs, to live life to the fullest and reach their full potential.
