Roll out the barrel for this winner BY JESSE GRAHAM A YARRA Glen man is sharing the spoils of victory with friends, after tracking down the only prize in the state as part of the Jack Daniel’s Barrel Hunt. On 9 July, Yarra Glen’s Jason McGrath took to the city with friend Melissa Mitchell to track down a hidden whiskey barrel as part of the barrel hunt, which is being held to mark the 150th anniversary of the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Tennessee. After taking clues from the Facebook page where the competition is run, Mr McGrath and Ms Mitchell explored the city and walked some 18 kilometres, before happening across the barrel at the Lagerfield Sports Bar at Crown in Melbourne. He said they stumbled across the barrel at the top of a staircase after deciding to take a break during the search. “There’s probably a bit of perseverance and dumb luck, is how I’m describing it,” he said. “I only went to go and do it to have fun and run around the city for a day, to actually stagger up the stairs, exhausted after running 18 kilometres around the place ... and say, ‘OK, I need to sit down and find somewhere quiet to recollect our thoughts’, and looked down like, ‘ ... That’s the barrel.’ “I was in denial for three days.” The barrel was one of 10 hidden around the country, and the only one in the state, and Mr McGrath and Ms Mitchell got to share in the spoils - which included a bar set, merchandise, travel and concert vouchers and a bottle of the 150th anniversary whiskey that was made in the hidden barrels. He said a friend, Sarah Roberts, was unable to take part in the search on the day, and would also get to share in the prizes. Mr McGrath said a guard stationed with the barrel told the group that other searchers had come into the bar, but got as far as the staircase and left without searching further. “People beat us to the bar, but they didn’t get up the staircase,” he said. “Finding the thing and knowing that it’s such a rare and limited item is incredible.”

Hero of the community By Victoria Stone-MeadowS
I was in tears, shaking, the knees went, the whole thing. It was incredible… money would be portioned and given to the orphanage her daughter was adopted from; to Ovarian Cancer Australia; to a community member raising money for breast cancer research and to a family she knew, whose boy lives with a genetic disorder. She told the Mail the award assembly was a surprise, and that she didn’t realise the event was in her honour until she was on the stage. “It was an absolute shock to find that my husband had organised this assembly at my daughter’s school,” she said. “I was in tears, shaking, the knees went, the whole thing. It was incredible.”

SUE CONTARINO was awarded the $10,000 Community Hero Award at a specially-held school assembly at Wonga Park Primary School, on Tuesday 12 July this year. An ovarian cancer champion who raised thousands for charity earlier in 2016 had her work recognised with a surprise award from BankVic. A Former Healesville High School teacher, her award was presented by BankVic CEO Stephen Capello at the assembly, which was attended by Victoria Police Eastern Region Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent, Ovarian Cancer Australia’s director of fund-raising Katrina Parker, and Ms Contarino’s friends and family. Ms Contarino’s husband Steve nominated her for the award, and she was chosen from a short-list of 12 finalists who were assessed on how they displayed generosity and courage. Ms Contarino, who was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in 2013, said the prize

What is your favourite place in the Yarra Valley?
– Debra Traill, Yarra Glen.
Gift keeps on giving BY JESSE GRAHAM
What is one thing a visitor to the Yarra Valley can’t miss? “When we normally have visitors, we take them for a drive and see the animals that are around that they don’t have in the city ... or we take them for a walk up in the national park.“ – Wayne Morrow, Dixons Creek.
YARRA Ranges Council is paying tribute to residents who have clocked up years of volunteering and delivering food to others ahead of national Meals on Wheels Day at the end of the month. Wednesday, 31 August, is national Meals on Wheels Day, a day to acknowledge the work of volunteers who deliver meals to residents across the country under the program. The council this month acknowledged their own volunteers on the cover of its Yarra Ranges Local newsletter, telling the stories of some of their volunteers, including Cecilia and Jonni Sharpley.
Cecilia started volunteering for the council’s Meals on Wheels service about eight years ago to assist her friend who had delivered meals with her late husband. She said that Jonni would step in to help out when either she or her friend were unable to do their usual meal run. The Meals on Wheels deliveries are made to residents who may be living with a disability, are elderly, or may not be in a position to make their own meals. Ms Sharpley said the volunteers build up a rapport with the meal recipients and often talk to them about their lives and catch up during their deliveries.
She said there are benefits, such as meeting residents’ new puppies, as well as sad moments, like when someone is moved into care or passes away and their name is removed from the roster. When asked why she and her husband volunteered, Ms Sharpley said it was all about giving back to the community she lived in. “I think it’s important that you enjoy the benefits of living in the community, so therefore it’s a good idea to put something back,” she said. “I think as long as I’m able to drive, I’d keep doing it – it’s a small thing you can do.” She said residents who had the
spare time should consider volunteering, whether it be with Meals on Wheels or a group that they are passionate about. Yarra Ranges mayor Jason Callanan said the national day was a chance to thank volunteers who spent their time helping others. “Thankyou to all our 115 Meals on Wheels volunteers for their contribution to this program, as well as making Yarra Rangesa more caring, healthy and connected community,“ he said. Normie’s shakin’ it up
VOX POPS BEST OF YARRA VALLEY
BY PETER DOUGLAS AUSTRALIAN music legend and Vietnam veteran Normie Rowe is set to ‘shake up’ the fund-raising effort for the Seville Memorial War project. Along with fellow ‘60s icon Marcie Jones, Rowe will headline the concert which will take place on Saturday, 17 September, at the Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn. The memorial has been a major project for the Seville Township Group and has received great support from surrounding RSL sub-branches, including Mount Evelyn and Lilydale. Rowe told the ‘Mail’ he wanted to do everything possible to help support the memorial. He said smaller memorials had special meaning for him, which started after he visited a site in the small Victorian town of Tongala in the Goulburn Valley. “I was there with a friend, whom I’d met while on tour and under fire in Vietnam,” Rowe said. “I was laying a wreath for a soldier who was killed on my tour of duty; he was from Collie in Western Australia. “Some time after, I happened to be in Collie and dropped in to see the soldier’s mother. “I told her about his little place called Tongala, which was honouring her son.” Rowe said the soldier’s mother was completely unaware of the memorial and she became emotional. “It was one of the most touching moments I’ve ever experienced,” he said. “And that’s why I continue to encourage the smaller memorials, because they mean so much to so many people.” Rowe first rose to prominence in the 1960s as a singer and was once widely deemed Australia’s most popular male star. However, he was conscripted in 1967. He served his tour of duty in Vietnam with distinction, though it curtailed his career and changed his life forever. “I didn’t ask for it, but I knew it was something that was going to change me and I didn’t walk away from that,” he said. “I (now) speak on behalf of those veterans, when ... the mic is in my hand (and) I have the opportunity to have the floor.” Rowe still enjoys a healthy career in entertainment, but devotes much of his time to staying in contact with other veterans and supporting initiatives such as the Seville memorial. Most recently, he performed in Sydney for a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, during which he said many Vietnam-era songs resonated profoundly with the audience. Rowe expected local crowds would enjoy a similar performance. Once completed, the Seville War Memorial will be a glass monument which stands more than three metres high. The memorial will not only carry the names of those from Seville who died while on active service but will have images, letters, poems and stories of those from Seville who served their nation, including the Yarra Valley’s only
Legendary Australian performer, Normie Rowe. 158439
What is one thing a visitor to the Yarra Valley can’t miss seeing? “I would have to say it’s perhaps just going for a bushwalk by themselves at Badger Weir. Or Spirits of the Sky at the Healesville Sanctuary.“ – Brooke Collins, Healesville. Do you have a favourite place to visit in the Yarra Valley? “No. I just like to experience the whole of the Yarra Valley. Not just Healesville – Warburton is a beautiful place. There are lots and lots of beautiful places. Just very, very happy living here.“ – David Johnston, Healesville. What is your favourite thing about the Yarra Valley? “The people. The people that have that sense of belonging to a local community and just giving to it. And giving, and giving and giving – it’s a beautiful place for that.“ – Rod Hystead, Healesville. Where is your favourite place to go in the Yarra Valley? Victoria Cross recipient, George Ingram VC, MM. Chair of the Seville War Memorial, Anthony McAleer, said the memorial would be a fitting tribute. “This will be a war memorial for the 21st century,” he said. “It will have much more historical detail on it than those built 100 years ago and much of that information will be emotive. “At the same time this memorial will stand as
a work of art and as an icon for Seville.” President of the Seville Township Group, Sue McMurdie, said the memorial was just what the community needed. “We’ve been knocked by the closure of IGA, the Bendigo Bank branch and Stockfeed,” she said. “Building something that reflects on our heritage and gives us a place to come together as a community on days of nation significance should give us all a lift.”
“I like the cider place that’s at Stones of the Yarra Valley – Napoleone Brewery. I quite like going there, but I like the scenery as well.“ – Sharon Waller.

Brendon’s message goes viral BY JODIE SYMONDS A YARRA Junction man last year created an anti-domestic violence video to raise awareness of this prevalent issue. Brendon Murphy was honoured on Australia Day for his ‘Heroes for Zeroes’ video that went viral in September. The clip aimed at bringing men and women together to make a stand against violence in homes. It has had over 8000 views on popular social media site, YouTube.
Featuring members from the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League (YVMDFNL), the video switched between players to get the message across. Mr Murphy told the Mail in January the idea came to him while watching a current affairs program about a woman who was killed by her partner. Reacting to the program, the footballers in the video said it was a “man who should know better, with mates who should know better”. Mr Murphy said in the video that
the only number of acceptable deaths from domestic violence is zero. “At the football, it’s almost hardly spoken about, to be honest, unless there’s a special or something around like that,” Mr Murphy said. Being a father himself to a one-year-old at the time, Mr Murphy said domestic violence was heart-breaking. “I thought ‘geez’, we put our whole lives into these children, and how heart-breaking to have someone just ... it’s just such a waste of life,” he said.
One of the men in the video summed up anti-domestic violence in one sentence; “It is a national disgrace”. The viewer comments on the YouTube video that he had nothing but praise for Mr Murphy. “Don’t mind admitting I had a tear in my eye watching this. Your parents must be very proud, I know I am,” one person commented. “This is what real men should be, not violent thugs!” another commented.

Boinga Bob at his sculpture house in Warburton. 158518 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM
VOX POPS BEST OF YARRA VALLEY Where is your favourite place to go in the Yarra Valley? “It has to be Wirrawilla Walk up in Toolangi it’s my favourite. It’s a rainforest walk up there.“ – Erin Murphy, Badger Creek.
What’s your favourite thing about the Yarra Valley? “The natural beauty of the environment and the wonderful people who are really interested in permaculture and foraging anything green in the Yarra Valley is what I love and Healesville is full of it.“ – Doris Pozzi, Healesville.
Where is your favourite place to go in the Yarra Valley?
The house that Bob built WHEN visiting Warburton, one of the must-see sights is the town’s sculpture house – a mammoth, ever-expanding artwork by local identity, Boinga Bob. Bob, whose real name is Robert Prudhoe, created the house in the 1990s, after his former house on Highfield Road burnt down. Using the land that the house stood on and the former Stationmaster’s house (which was also used as a youth hostel), Bob, 76, slowly created an artwork of a home that draws global visitors and media attention. “All the hostellers used to visit me across the road, there ... and I’d come down here with my guitar and sing songs and things, and they were always welcome at my place,” Bob said. “It was about 1993, I suppose, I moved down here. I wrote to the hostel people – this was empty and I offered to be caretaker down
here and look after it for them. “I knew it was going to be my building, it was like a sixth sense ... so immediately, I started knocking out walls and windows and rebuilding it to my dream.” Sitting in the house, remnants of the Stationmaster’s house are visible in some of the walls – but most of the house is adorned in elaborate woodwork designs, which Bob makes by hand, as well as art and items that he collected in his overseas journeys. Holding a photo of a group of men, including a much younger Boinga Bob, he said he visited Africa in the 1970s and learned Swahili, much of which he still remembers today, and recites the names of the men without pause. Bob recently experienced possibly one of the luckiest heart attacks possible – inside a doctor’s surgery, 400 metres away from an ambulance. He was taken to Maroondah
Hospital underwent a quadruple bypass operation, but is unencumbered seven months on as he tells stories about his past, including when he met the man who burnt his other house down. “Somebody actually put a match to it and burnt it down, and a few years later on, the same person ... came to me and said ‘I’m sorry, Bob, but I was the one who burnt your house down’,” he said. “And, immediately, I said ‘Look, I forgive you, but please don’t do that again – it’s not nice to burn someone’s house down’.” “But the thing is, if you don’t forgive someone, you’re in prison. You are. “A very famous person once said ‘forgive and you shall be forgiven’ - I’m not a bible basher, but I do know a little about things which have been written in scriptures.” The new house quickly became an icon in the town and Bob said he feels well-supported by other
residents, with many rushing to his defence when issues arose with council about part of the house in past years. “I’m very grateful for being part of the community, because the community do support me, and they’ve proven it,” he said. “They said there’s immense support and if there was any trouble, if it did happen, we’d get in front of the bulldozer ... because a lot of people come to look at my place and they spend a lot of money. They go to restaurants and things like that and I’m quite happy about that.” A public Facebook group called Save Boinga Bob’s House currently has 1659 members, who regularly post in support of Bob and his art. As for the future, he said he was hoping to organise a grant through the Yarra Ranges Council to maintain and improve the sculpture house.
“With my young children, we hang out a lot around the railway station, do lots of walks, hang at the park, get coffee - or the sanctuary.“ – Ria Lidgerwood, Healesville.
What’s your favourite thing about the Yarra Valley? “My favourite thing would be just the diversity with the ability to go to wineries, you’ve got the nature walks - all that sort of stuff. There’s a big wide variety of things you can do in the valley.” – Cameron Heath, Croydon.

Scholarship is a tribute
A taste of the best By Victoria StoneMeadowS SARAH CROWE, from Gruyere, was the first woman to be named wine critic James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year, with the Yarra Yering winemaker receiving the top honour in a ceremony on 3 August this year. Ms Crowe, 41, received the honour at a ceremony launching the 2017 Halliday Wine Companion, where top wines and winemakers from around the country are acknowledged with awards from the famed writer. This year’s awards mark the first time a woman has won the Winemaker of the Year Award, which Ms Crowe said was an “inspirational” moment.
“Winning because of somebody respecting your work is a great personal achievement, and it’s an amazing achievement for everyone here at Yarra Yering - particularly the guys who work in the vineyard,” she said. She said that women made up about “10 per cent” of the industry’s winemakers, and that she would like to see those numbers shift. The Winemaker of the Year Award comes in Ms Crowe’s 15th year in the industry, after starting out at Brokenwood Wines in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley. She came to the Yarra Valley after 12 years of working in the vineyards and then as a winemaker, and has been at the helm of Yarra Yering for the last three years.

Mr Chandler currently plays for Lilydale’s cricket club and previously played for Healesville. He told the Mail that he has
been playing cricket since he was seven, after growing up playing matches in the backyard. Councillors Maria McCarthy and Fiona McAllister presented Luke with the award, which paid tribute to the teenager’s stellar cricket record. “Last year, Luke was one of 12 young Victorian Indigenous cricketers selected to undertake the journey of a lifetime to Dubai, to take part in the England cricket legend, Kevin Pietersen’s cricket academy,” Cr McAllister said. “Luke had the opportunity to train under Pietersen’s watchful eye, attend international matches, meet high-profile cricketers and compete in Pietersen’s T20 World Cup, representing Australia.”
JACINTA SCRAGG of Healesville Primary School was awarded the 2015 Tricia O’Reilly Scholarship at the end of the 2015 school year. The $500 scholarship is awarded each year in memory of 12-year-old Healesville student Tricia O’Reilly who died in August 2001 when she was struck by a truck in Healesville. The award pays tribute to the qualities Tricia exhibited during her school life - being academically accomplished, interested and involved in school activity, organised and conscientious in always doing their best. They are also the sort of person who is sporty, cheerful, fun-loving, respected and popular. Jacinta represents those qualities and was put forward as a very worthy 2015 recipient.
Accepting the award, she said it was very much a huge surprise and a great way to finish her time at Healesville Primary. “School is what I enjoy doing and I think I have grown up here and tried to achieve those qualities,” she said. “I am over the moon to be moving on now to Healesville High School,” she said. The scholarship was instigated by the trucking company involved and organised through local police sergeant Tony Van Gorp to maintain the privacy of the company. In more recent years, local bitumen transport company, Gornroamin, owned by former SES Controller Karen Piccone, has kept the scholarship going with a donation of $500. The money goes towards Year 7 education expenses at Healesville High School.

Walk among the giants By Victoria Stone-MeadowS A TOOLANGI tree that sprouted during the life of Shakespeare and remains standing today was awarded as the National Trust’s inaugural Victorian Tree of the Year. The Kalatha Giant tree, near Kalatha Creek in the Toolangi State Forest, was announced as the Tree of the Year by the National Trust on Monday, 8 August 2016. The Mountain Ash tree is believed to be at least 400 years old, stands 65 metres tall and is the seventh largest tree in Victoria by volume – it was named with eight other standout trees from around the state by the organisation as part of the award.
Toolangi resident and nominator, Steve Meacher, told the Mail that he saw the award mentioned on social media and made a quick submission for the tree, but did not hear anything more until the award announcement. He said the Kalatha Giant “ticked all the boxes” for the award, due to its height, age, size and symbolism in the community. Mr Meacher said a large fire scar along the tree became a symbol of resilience in the community after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires impacted the area. In 2013, a boardwalk was built around the tree and opened by then-Environment Minister, Mark Butler, with Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund (VBAF) money paying for the walk.

FIVE remarkable young people were recognised by Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Banks for their contribution to the Upper Yarra community in September 2015. Aleksei Bondarenko-Edwards, Harley Lubeck, Rebecca Lunsden-Keys, Hannah Mahoney and Steven Sanders were announced as 2015 Ian De La Rue Youth Initiative Award recipients at the Upper Yarra Community Enterprise Annual General Meeting. UYCE chairman, Peter Kimberley, said the calibre of nominations this year made it impossible to single out one recipient. Presenting the award certificates and a cheque for $1000, Mr Kimberley described the diverse group of young people as leaders in their communities and thanked them for the opportunities they created for others. Aleksei Bondarenko-Edwards, 24, was recognised as “a local champion for affordable health and well-being”.
Harley Lubeck, 19, was nominated by Tony Aulich from Yarra Junction Football Netball Club. He said when adversity struck, Harley had risen to the challenge. Rebecca Lumsden-Keys, 22, was nominated by Sarah Ward-Brumhead, UYCE’s newest director. Rebecca is a director of MISFIT Theatre where as part of her promotions role she encourages young, at-risk people and youth of all abilities to participate. Hannah Mahoney, 15, and Junior School Captain at Upper Yarra Secondary College, was described by her nominator, Kate Barrett, as considerate and passionate in her commitment to help and motivate others. Steven Sanders, 24, was nominated by Barry McDonald of Powelltown Football Club. He said when the club needed an Under 18 coach this year, Steven stepped up as a leader.

Wheels of charity By Jesse Graham YARRA Valley residents are being urged to help a Healesville man with cerebral palsy maintain his mobility and keep his charity work going, with a car fund-raising campaign launched. Friends of Paul Cashmore, a 62-yearold Healesville resident, have launched a fund-raising campaign through GoFundMe, in a bid to raise $10,000 for a car and modification works. Mr Cashmore’s current car, a Toyota Camry, has more than 400,000 kilometres on the odometer and many issues building up, requiring the car to be fixed or sold in the near future. Fund-raiser organiser, Sue Vogt, said that Paul - known to his friends as Paulie - had spent four years volunteering for a local charity, driving residents to doctor’s appointments, hospitals, the airport or on essential trips. A friend of Mr Cashmore, who provided his current car, has another Camry formerly used as a company car for sale - but the car will also need modification works so Paul can operate it with his left hand and foot. As Mr Cashmore is on a disability pension, Ms Vogt and Mr Cashmore’s friends decided to organise a crowdfunding campaign through GoFundMe, where residents can donate towards the $10,000 goal and help to make the new car a reality. “The car is ready now for him - if we had the money, we could get it straight away,” she said. “We’re just getting our fingers crossed that the car he’s got at the moment hangs on. “His mobility completely depends on his car - he would struggle with public transport, walking to and from bus stops.” The campaign, ‘Let’s get Paul a new car’, has received $4086 in donations over the last month, but has almost $6000 left before the goal is achieved. Ms Vogt said she hoped that selling Mr Cashmore’s current car would help to bolster the funds in the campaign,
Paul Cashmore and Sue Vogt with Paul's current Toyota Camry, which is in need of replacing. 158587 but wanted to raise awareness of the fund-raiser to guarantee the new car. “We’ve got a strong start, but it’s been going for a month,” Ms Vogt said. “We want to get the car before this car gets to the stage where it can’t be driven, and then it becomes less of a
saleable option and means Paul’s got nothing to get around in.” Mr Cashmore, who has been driving his current car for 12 years, said he was “blown out” from seeing the response from residents thus far. “(It was) a big surprise to me - I

didn’t know anything about it,” he said. “I’m just absolutely blown out by it all.” Ms Vogt said Mr Cashmore loved driving, and regularly drove others to where they needed to be. “Everybody’s got to have some-
thing meaningful to do, and it’s something that’s really important for Paul,” she said. To donate to the campaign, visit www.gofundme.com/2fy9x5g or visit gofundme.com and search ‘Let’s get Paul a new car’.

Fund-raiser wasn’t trivial By Kath Gannaway HEALESVILLE High School’s senior VCAL students combined impressive entrepreneurial and philanthropy skills in hosting the 2016 Rotary Club of Healesville Trivia Night on 11 August. The high school has been a dedicated supporter of the Rotary Milking Cow and Goat Project, which raises money to purchase cows and goats for underprivileged villagers in Kariakomo in Kenya. The students ran the show, from selling tickets and getting donations of a swag of prizes to taking centre stage on the night for an entertaining night of trivia and games. Project co-ordinator, Rotarian Wilma Guest spoke about the project, saying it was transforming lives. She said in villages where a generation had died of HIV AIDS, leaving hundreds of children orphaned, the animals provided milk and in some cases a small income for grandparents left to care for the children. She said the money raised on the night would go to build a shelter for one of the younger male goats in the village. “They’re building a bigger shed for Billy, and they’re probably buying some seed and putting in tropical fruit trees, like mangoes,“ Ms Best said.

MC, Bradley Blank, ran a tight program, ad-libbing his way through any potential hiccups, engaging with the audience and taking a no-nonsense stance on any disputed answers. “I’ve got the answer sheets ... and that means I’m right,” he quipped, ensuring the first challenge was the last. Another highlight of the night was the fast and furious auction action by Rotarian and
renowned Healesville auctioneer David Brown, who came out of retirement for the event. Mrs Best congratulated and thanked the VCAL students and everyone who supported the night, which raised $1800. “I would just like to say the young ones did such a brilliant job,“ she told the Mail. “They’re a credit to their school; they’re a credit to the town; they’re a credit to their parents - they were outstanding, really.“ She gave her thanks to high school teacher Gabby Plunkett for her part in organising the night.

Light tankers ready for fight THIRTY new 4WD ultra-light tankers (G-Wagons) will be delivered to northeast Victoria in the coming months to boost the capacity of Forest Fire Management Victoria staff to protect local communities from bushfires. The new wagons are being delivered to the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) depots across the region including Bright, Corryong, Mitta Mitta, Mansfield and Marysville. DELWP’s regional manager forest and fire operations for Hume, Shaun
Lawlor, said Alexandra and Broadford depots received 14 vehicles in March last year, which have already proved their worth during the autumn planned burning season. “The ultra-light tanker has several safety and efficiency features specifically designed for forest firefighting and planned burning needs,” Mr Lawlor said. “These tankers have a 630-litre water carrying capacity, much bigger than the 400-litre capacity of older vehicles, which means our Forest Fire Manage-
ment firefighters are able to stay longer on the fire-ground.” He said the body of the wagons had been “ergonomically” designed to accommodate people of all sizes. “We have also added electronic rewind to the hose reels, and repositioned heavy items so they’re lower and more accessible,” he said. “These tankers have a Falling Object Protection Structure (FOPS) above the cabin to help better protect our crews from falling trees and branches.
“Victoria is the first state to have implemented this level of falling object protection in its firefighting vehicles.” The rollout of over 300 wagons across Victoria is based on hazardous tree risk in each location and their area’s typography for bushfire response. The Mercedes-Benz G-Professional 4WDs were chosen for the ultra-light firefighting fleet through an open, competitive tender process to deliver the most cost-effective solution.
Smart mental health film phones it in By Jesse Graham
1233106-ACM26-16
IN the hope of helping others, a Healesville man has told the story of his experience with depression and anxiety via a smartphone film featured at a festival in Sydney. Adrian Jeffs documented his lifelong experience with mental illness in a short film, A Good Day to Die, which he shot completely on his iPhone 6 Plus. The film features scenes from the Yarra Valley and around the state, while Mr Jeffs narrates his story of how living with depression and anxiety impacted his relationships and his life. The aim of the film, Mr Jeffs said, was to reduce the stigma of talking about mental illness, to raise awareness and to help with suicide prevention. “Every suicide has a tragic effect on family and friends,” are words that appear on the screen at the end of the film, along with statistics about suicide. The film was featured over the weekend at SF3 (SmartFone Flick Fest) in Sydney, and though Mr Jeffs didn't walk away with an award, he said he was pleased to have his film featured and to spread his message. “I kind of put myself out there to be ridiculed, but it was about the message,” he said. But the response to the video, he said, had been “amazing”. “It was really interesting, from friends from back in the fun times, (they) never had any idea - so it shows how well it can be hidden,” Mr Jeffs said. He urged people who might be experiencing symptoms of mental illness, or who need someone to talk to, to seek help in their friends, their family, and organisations such as beyondblue. “They say suicide is a long-term solution to a short-term problem - you never know what the next stage is going to bring,” Mr Jeffs said. SF3 is a festival dedicated to films shot entirely on smartphones, but Mr Jeffs said the method was a “whole new world of filmmaking” and that he used a grip, a microphone and a lens attached to his phone to create high-quality films from the device.
In brief Robbed at knifepoint POLICE are appealing for information after an East Warburton man was robbed at knifepoint in Lilydale last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between 2am and 2.15am on Thursday 25 August, a 27-yearold East Warburton man was in the laneway between Lilydale’s Crown Hotel and a Westpac bank branch when he was grabbed around the throat and punched by an unknown person. The person demanded the victim’s wallet and an altercation took place where the person then produced a flick knife. Det Sgt Smithwick said the man handed over cash. He said police did not yet have a description of the offender. Anyone with more information, or who may have witnessed the incident, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to file a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between 3pm on Saturday 27 August and 8am the next day, unknown persons forced open a garage roller door at a Drummond Road property in Seville, and stole a trailer and a gun safe with two firearms inside. The trailer was recovered nearby, in Gardiner Road, Seville, but an air rifle and another rifle remain missing. Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POLICE are searching for wouldbe thieves who broke into the Seville Pony Club last week, and are calling on people to note any suspicious behaviour. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that between 5pm on Sunday 21 August and 2.30pm on Thursday 25 August, unknown persons forced open bolts on a roller door at the pony club on Bell Street. However, nothing was reported stolen from the pony club. Anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Connecting people and communities
Time for talks By Peter Douglas
would be a fantastic outcome for our community,” Cr Avery said. “Of course, I don’t think anybody would want this to remain just as a hole in the ground. “But I think it’s also important that we get this out to our community so they can have an input as well.” Cr Avery said it was time to take this project to the next level. “Sibelco ... have engaged with community ... done the master plan ... but I think the time has come where we need to get this out and get our community talking ... because they are going to be severely affected,” Cr Avery said. Cr Avery also used the opportunity to voice frustrations over lack of progress over the infrastructure issue. This included infrastructure projects which he said were “non-negotiables”, comprising a new railway station, bridge upgrades at Mooroolbark and Hull Road, and road network improvements. Cr Avery said these items were spoken about four years ago, yet there was no real progress. “If we introduce a few thousand people into this area, there’s going to be a proportion of them that are going to want to catch a train,” he said. “So there is no train station proposed and they’re going to have to drive - and they’ll be driving to Lilydale or Mooroolbark, whose railway station car parks are already overflowing
YARRA Ranges Council has committed to seeking wider community consultation regarding the rezoning of the Cave Hill Quarry site at Lilydale. Though much work lies ahead for stakeholders, the decision represents a step forward towards a major residential development on the site, which would bring a significant population and economic boost to the region. The 163ha site, located south-west of the town centre, is owned by Sibelco Australia, which last year ceased mining operations at the site. Sibelco has been working with the Places Victoria to prepare a master plan for the former quarry site. However, reservations exist not only over the residential development, but surrounding infrastructure improvements needed to support such an increase in population. Central to this is the construction of a railway station between Lilydale and Mooroolbark. Sibelco representatives fronted the council’s Tuesday 23 August meeting to field questions from councillors, with many councillors voicing some support, yet concern over the lack of progress regarding infrastructure. Melba Ward councillor Terry Avery was particularly vocal and said greater advocacy and community feedback was required, though he believed the time was right to seek out greater input. “This is an important development; I have no doubt it

because of insufficient space. “I acknowledge ... (they’ve) worked really hard to get a good outcome for our community, but we’re still a big fat nowhere ... we still haven’t got that crucial infrastructure. “I live in that area ... I know there are traffic jams and this will only make it worse.” Cr Avery put forward an alternate recommendation to provide in-principle support to progress the proposed amendment. However, conditions apply. These include an agreement being reached regarding the provision of a road connection between the quarry site and Melba Avenue. Also, a traffic impact assessment report and the finalisation of a storm water management plan. Meanwhile, Cr Avery was also critical of the State Government’s lack of engagement over the project, particularly given it has been deemed to be of state significance. The alternate recommendation includes a provision that council advocates to the State Government regarding the need for a new train station and upgrades to the Hull and Mooroolbark roads intersection. “Well, if it’s of state significance, where is the State,” Cr Avery said. The provisions also include that council urges the State Government to commit to the timely construction of these infrastructure works. The alternate recommendation passed unanimously.

This program has been a mind blowing experience and the change in my health has been unbelievable. I am off my blood pressure medications. I no longer need cholesterol lowering tablets. I am taking less thyroxin because of losing 11.2kg. My arthritis in my hands has disappeared and my varicose veins have gone down. Hurray for this absolute eye opener. - Judy Belter Robin & I stumbled into this program with no understanding of what we were doing. Being a diabetic for nearly 20 yrs I was after some instruction to stop the progression of the disease. Peter explained every part of diabetes simply and with this understanding I lost 8kg and have dropped all diabetic medication. 12 weeks ago I would not have thought this possible. I now have a new life! - Jennifer Johnson.

How our garden can grow RECENTLY, our local U3A Garden Group visited the heritage listed gardens at Maroondah Reservoir Park. We were all amazed at the enormous amount of work achieved by Ranger Shane and the small team of volunteers. The Friends of Maroondah Park members formerly worked there as part of the Green Army, but now return voluntarily to continue the massive undertaking that they started.
The paths are now wide and clear of overhangs. The shrubbery is trimmed and undercut to expose the flower beds and distant views. Edging and drains have been cleaned up. It is really fantastic to see the bones of this historic garden reappear, surrounded by our wonderful bush, after the devastation of the long drought and so many years of neglect. With no funding the next step is harder, as they need to replant the beds with hardy plants befitting the heritage listing. This is an impossibility to complete without funds or large donations of plants. This garden has always been a major asset to Healesville. As there are so many clubs in Healesville, I wonder if they could all make a one-off donation of say $50, around the same time, to enable purchase of large numbers of plants. This garden once had 15 gardeners and now relies on the labours of volunteers and one Park Ranger. Come on Healesville, let’s get behind them! Judy Macdonald, Healesville.
Wedding A VERY quiet but pretty wedding was celebrated in the Healesville Presbyterian Church last Wednesday afternoon, when Miss Nonie Jarvis of Yarra Glen, became the wife or Mr Ernest Kossatz of Jeparit. The ceremony was performed by the Rev McKissick and Miss Lorna Collier presided at the organ. The girls of the Presbyterian Girls Friendly Society had effectively decorated the church with yellow daffodils, lilies, white japonica and ferns. Oddfellows’ Ball at Yarra Glen SELDOM has the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall been as crowded as it was last Friday night when the Loyal Yering Lodge M.U.I.O.O.F. held its annual ball. Supporters were present from all aprts of the district to unite in enjoyment in the simply but
prettily decorated hall. Healesville Social Chatter FOR the past few Friday nights, we have missed the tap-tap on the office door when Mrs Blackwood, a reader for over 40 years failed to call for her ‘Guardian’ but sent a messenger instead. Subsequently, we were sorry to learn that she is having trouble with her eyes to the extent of having to undergo a further course of treatment. Upper Yarra Mail September 1 1994 Big Crowd at Gladysdale Mill Meeting OVER 160 people attended a meeting to discuss the proposed Gladysdale Mill last Friday night at the Yarra Junction Senior Citizen’s Centre. WHAT'S the actual reasoning behind the changing of the name of the 'Healesville and District Hospital’? Apparently, it’s costing $12,000 for the name change. Why should 'our’ hospital be any different to other public hospitals in Victoria? When other hospitals have been rebuilt/extended, they haven’t been renamed. For example: the Royal Melbourne is still the Royal Melbourne; the Austin Hospital is still the Austin Hospital; the Royal Women’s Hospital is still the Royal Women’s Hospital; the Box Hill Hospital is still the Box Hill Hospital; the Royal Children’s Hospital still the Royal Children’s Hospital; St Vincent’s Hospital is still St Vincent’s Hospital; Maroondah Hospital is still Maroondah Hospital; Monash Hospital is still Monash Hospital ... etc. The hospital was built from money garnished from timber industry workers. If they want to change the name, show recognition to those who paid to build it. They won’t because it’s not politically correct at the moment. Also, if the online survey closed on the 10
July, why was I able to complete it last night (16 August)? I completed it more than once - I filled it out 15 times (just to see if it would let me). I don’t think much credence should be given to the survey, because there’s not ID collected (the IP address) to ensure a person can only complete the survey once from their PC or tablet/phone not 15, 100 or 1000 times. Because there’s no data as to who filled out the survey, the information to decide if it should be renamed ‘or’ what it should be renamed could have been 'fudged’! It’s all about the range LIN and his team opened the Bottle-O liquor store in Yarra Junction six months ago. They carry an extraordinarily large range of imported and local wines, imported and local beers and ales, imported and local spirits, and imported and local liqueurs. The wine districts cover the Yarra Valley, Mornington, South Australia, Western Australia and Margaret River. They have a quick and efficient drive-through and supermarket style layout to their store which is very easy to walk around. These are the benefits of having a well-known franchisor and products are easily accessed with fantastic wall displays. Prices are cost-effective and value for money. Lin, the new owner, had previously owned a liquor store in Dandenong and has now moved his business to the Yarra Valley. Dylan is the store manager, while Stacie and Sarah make up his team. Together, they provide fast, helpful and efficient service to the drive-through and in store. Dylan says ‘watch out for the fortnightly specials’. The bottle shop is located at 2440 Warburton Highway, Yarra Junction. Inquiries to 5967 1995.

Store’s part of the town’s fabric of a family business?’ Andrew says: “Strong family values, a loyal team and staff who share those values and honest dealings with our loyal customers. Also, offering value, style, quality and service at the right price”. The King family has seen many changes in retail habits, but has maintained a “steady as she goes” attitude, that their customers always know, ‘that they can get it at Kings’. Being a member of the Mensland group of stores, Ronald King maintains the integrity that customers rely on when choosing where to shop. The association with the Mensland group gives the business access to a wide pool of fashion labels that are only available to independent retailers. Andrew King is always excited by the change of seasons and the new ranges that come month by month, which have been selected up to 6-8 months in advance. At this time of year, there are bargains to be found and fresh styles to enjoy. Not to forget who helped you to get where you are. ‘Thanks dad’.

FOR over 51 years, there has been a Ronald King Menswear shop on Main Street, Lilydale. MR Ron King is proud of his achievement of being a successful retailer in both Lilydale and Croydon, which has progressed from humble beginnings to the well-established icon in the menswear trade. Over the years, the Ronald King stores have developed various avenues along with surfwear and ladies’ fashions at Croydon. It has been at least 15 years since Ron retired, but he regularly helps out with deliveries between Croydon and Lilydale. Andrew King, Ron’s son, is now in charge of running the business and is based in the Croydon store. Jacob King, Andrew’s son, manages the Lilydale store. There are more than 115 years of menswear experience behind the passion of helping customers to choose what is ‘the right style’ for them. Ron is very pleased to be able to see the generations follow in his footsteps. This makers Father’s Day special. Asked, ‘What gives the longevity and success

DEMAND FOR FAMILY HOMES THE latest REIV data shows family homes remain popular with buyers, delivering solid price growth in the year to 30 June. Median house price growth was widespread across Victoria - from Gippsland, to the state’s north and west, as well as a number of locations within commuting distance of Melbourne. Three-bedroom houses in Drouin, east of Melbourne, recorded one of the state’s largest price increases over the year, up more than 18 per cent to a median house price of $330,000. This was up from $278,500 for the same period last year. This was closely followed by fourbedroom properties in Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley, where the median house price rose 17.2 per
cent to $390,500. Double-digit growth for threebedroom homes was recorded in a number of regional towns over the year including Kyneton, up 14.1 per cent to a median of $465,000; Mildura, up 13.6 per cent to $250,000; Warragul, up 11.9 per cent to $330,000; and Shepparton, up 11.5 per cent to $252,500. Three and four-bedroom homes in the coastal town of Torquay experienced significant annual growth, both up by 10 per cent to median house prices of $626,250 and $690,000 respectively. Other areas experiencing solid annual price growth for threebedroom homes include Sale, up 9.6 per cent to a median of $279,500; Wodonga, up 6.5 per cent to
$275,000; Geelong West, up 6.4 per cent to $526,500; and Ocean Grove, up 6.4 per cent to $500,000. Meanwhile, annual price growth was also seen at the opposite end of the spectrum. In the year to 30 June, the statewide median price for onebedroom units increased 2.3 per cent to $163,750, up from $160,000 for the same period last year. And three-bedroom units recorded significant price growth, up 3.8 per cent over the year to a median of $342,500. For more information on median house prices by bedroom, visit reiv. com.au. MAGGIE’S Plan is a career high-point for both star Greta Gerwig and writer-director Rebecca Miller. Independent-minded Maggie (Gerwig) initially plans to become a single mother by impregnating herself with donor sperm, but complications emerge when she falls in love with the passionate academic John (Ethan Hawke). Tender, funny and poignant, Maggie’s Plan is a superbly-written depiction of how messy love can be. The characters in Maggie’s Plan are remarkably nuanced and humanly flawed. Gerwig is magnetic as Maggie, and the film’s mood shifts organically from delight at her and John’s intense bond to deep sympathy for Maggie in her growing unhappiness and John’s inattentiveness as a husband. The supporting cast is amazing, with comedy masters Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph and the scene-stealing Julianne Moore all providing further levity and pathos. The narrative feels deliberately like it’s moving in a circle, but still feels fresh and lively throughout. As Maggie executes an intricate scheme to resolve her mistake and get John back together with his ex-wife Georgette (Moore), twists and setbacks abound, borne from fickle, conflicted hearts. With great characters and outstanding depth, Maggie’s Plan is one of the most authentic, touching films of the year, and also indicates that Gerwig does her best work when not directed by creative/romantic partner Noah Baumbach. -Seth Lukas Hynes

The ladder-leaders displayed why they are on top in the second quarter, kicking five goals to the Tigers’ one and went into half-time with a 35-point lead. Upwey were able to reduce Olinda’s lead heading into the last quarter, kicking six goals to Olinda’s three in the third quarter as Olinda held a 17-point lead at threequarter time. Motoring Bash for a good cause THE Children’s Charity this month announced that its 26th Variety Vic Bash raised more than $1.3 million for Victorian children in need. The final night of celebration was held in Darwin on Saturday, 20 August, to announce the figure and congratulate all those involved in achieving the incredible total. In 2016, the Variety Vic Bash traversed more than 4500km from Melbourne, travelling through the heart of Australia. More than 250 loud and proud entrants took part in the epic trip from the bottom to the top of Australia, stopping in at many iconic places along the way, such as the Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs and Katherine - just to name a few. Each year, the huge charity convoy visits local schools and organisations and injects funds into local communities when they stop for lunch or dinner along the way. This year, the fund-raisers made two stops to pres-
ent special grants in Maldon and Elliot. Variety Bash Development Manager, Julie Baxter said much effort went into the cause. “Our entrants spend countless hours each year raising funds for disadvantaged children, and to announce a total like this is the best way to say thankyou,” she said. The bash can inject up to $35,000 per stop along the route, while these funds enable local community groups to do great work in improving their infrastructure or initiating projects in schools. The Variety Bash is Australia’s largest and longestrunning motoring event, which has raised over $200 million for children in need across Australia since its inception in 1985. Variety is a national notfor-profit organisation that helps children who are sick, disadvantaged or who have special needs, to live life to the fullest and reach their full potential.
