Cops in ‘crisis’ By Georgia Westgarth POLICING in the City of Casey is bleeding from the inside, according to the Police Association of Victoria which has labelled the situation a “crisis”. The Victoria Police union has launched a tag line: ‘There aren’t enough police in the SouthEast’, as the region’s police cells overflow with prisoners. The Police Association of Victoria secretary Ron Iddles shared the grave concerns of uniform members. “They are telling us that they are at breaking point, such is the burden they are forced to endure due to under-resourcing,” Mr Iddles said. “Members are highly stressed and morale is extremely low. “The longer this situation continues, more police will continue to fall over.” The “crisis” claim by the police union comes as the Endeavour Hills police station closes its front counter on weekend nights, in a four-month trial. During times when the station’s counter is closed, phone calls will be diverted to Narre Warren police station’s 24-hour counter service. The station will be closed to the public at 5pm rather than 11pm on weekends, but police patrols on those nights will be

increased. Police say a review found low numbers of public attendance and phone calls to the station, particularly on weekends. Inspector Donald Brown said the trial would “maximise the amount of time police are out on patrol and responding to crime”. “We believe that this view is shared by most people in the community,” Insp Brown said. But police officers have divulged information about the steady stream of people attending Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills stations to union officials. Mr Iddles said that it was not uncommon to have up to 10 people per hour attend one of the three Casey stations, requiring police attention during busy periods. “While it is true there are fewer inquiries on a weekend, this does not mean that the ones received during this period are any less important or deserved of an immediate police response,” Mr Iddles said. “Only recently in response to a spate of carjackings, Victoria Police encouraged people who believed that they were followed to drive to their local police station. “Imagine just how they would feel to find the doors bolted shut at Endeavour Hills

when they got there.” On social media, the Police Association of Victoria wrote: “Police numbers are so low that our members can barely keep their stations open, let alone respond to triple-zero calls.“ Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue echoed the association’s position. “The Casey community is living in fear with carjackings, home invasions and gang violence becoming all too common. Daniel Andrews needs to get his priorities right and bring this crisis under control.“ Despite Casey’s crime rate soaring by 19 per cent in the past year, Mr O’Donohue said there were two fewer full-time equivalent police positions in the service area since November 2014. Police spokesperson Ben Radisich said Victoria Police provided a 24-hour response to the Casey community and that the State Government had recently announced an additional 300 frontline police members. “The Chief Commissioner has acknowledged the growth corridors are a priority of which Casey is one. The additional police will be deployed to respond to local crime issues. “We expect these police numbers to start appearing in stations from early 2017.”

Wild West Gate run By Cam Lucadou-Wells A DRIVER accused of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h on the M1 as he fled from police has been refused bail. Jesse James Pratt was arrested after running out the back door of a home and hiding in a neighbouring property in Bunyip on 16 August, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. Pratt was wanted on several outstanding matters including four police pursuits and failing to appear at court, police informant Sergeant Warren Frost told the court. During the M1 pursuit on 25 July, police allegedly abandoned a lightsand-sirens chase but used a helicopter to track Pratt allegedly driving a borrowed Ford Territory with stolen number plates, the court was told. At the time he was a learner driver and was disqualified for failing an oral

drug-driving test, and was not complying with a county court imposed corrections order, the court heard. The vehicle was seen travelling fast on City Road, then accelerated from police onto Kings Way and West Gate Bridge about 4am. A passenger later told police he feared for his life as the vehicle’s speedometer touched 200 km/h on West Gate Bridge, and thought the car would tip as it turned left on Williamstown Road. The passenger allegedly told Pratt to slow down to let him out several times before he jumped out of the vehicle in Southbank and was arrested. According to a police Air Wing officer, the vehicle reached estimated speeds of up to 170 km/h as it travelled east on the Monash Freeway until it turned into at Clyde Road, Berwick, and drove to Cannons Creek. Pratt’s girlfriend was arrested at

Cannons Creek but Pratt couldn’t be located. Pratt has also been charged with allegedly speeding at 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in Swan Hill in July 2015, and allegedly evading an abandoned police pursuit up to 170 km/h on Murray Valley Highway in northern Victoria in January. Pratt also allegedly struck a vehicle while fleeing from police in an unregistered Holden with stolen plates in Glenferrie Road, Armadale. He allegedly reached a speed of up to 120 km/h in a 40 km/h zone in High Street. He was also charged after police seized $550 cash and a handgun from a car believed to be used in a drug run in December 2015, the court was told. Sergeant Frost told the bail hearing on 29 August that Pratt showed a willingness to break speed limits by a “ridiculous amount”.

In brief Intruder planked

Pratt’s defence lawyer said the accused would contest a number of the charges, claiming a lack of evidence identifying the accused in two of the pursuits. The court heard Pratt had made no admissions during a police interview. The lawyer submitted that Pratt - who had ice issues, bipolar disorder and a mild intellectual disability - could be bailed on a CREDIT bail treatment program with judicial monitoring. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell, in rejecting bail, said Pratt was a young man with a significant criminal history and “little to none” engagement with his corrections order. Pratt was an unacceptable risk of endangering public safety and welfare, who had previously failed to attend court and had previous stints at CREDIT bail.

All-weather surface to bring out their best THE City of Casey has opened its first synthetic-surfaced football and cricket ground. The synthetic playing surface, at Carlisle Park Recreation Reserve in Cranbourne, was officially opened for play on Thursday 25 August. The $4.2 million project included the construction of a floodlit synthetic football and cricket oval, two netball courts, cricket practice nets, a sports pavilion and car parking. The State Government contributed $650,000 towards the dual purpose facility and Sport Minister John Eren was joined by council officials and players at the opening. Casey Council provided the bulk of funds with $3.52 million and AFL Victoria contributed $50,000 and a further $50,000 through the joint AFL/Cricket Australia Synthetic Turf Program. The new facilities include two femalefriendly AFL and cricket change rooms, which can also be used as a multi-purpose space, and two dedicated netball change rooms. The pavilion includes a kitchen, store areas, a scorer’s box, office space, player, umpire, referee and public amenities and covered viewing areas. The reserve will be home to the Carlisle Park Vikings Cricket Club, youth girl’s football squads, South East Juniors (SEJ) Umpires Association and a number of SEJ representative team squads. The Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School is also set to make regular use of the facility. Mr Eren said Carlisle Park becomes the second full-sized synthetic oval in Victoria. “This is a really exciting development for local clubs, players and families.” “The local area is booming, and that means more players than ever before are signing up for grassroots sports. A synthetic surface will help the ground cope with additional traffic.” Carlisle Park Recreation Reserve is on Majestic Boulevard, Cranbourne.

A WOMAN has fought off an intruder using the offender's own weapon - a plank of wood. The victim aged in her twenties pushed and shoved the male intruder and lunged to grab the timber. Her actions helped to scare off the offender, who then fled the scene on foot. The aggravated home invasion occurred on Sunday 28 August, around 4.15pm on Yorkshire Drive Cranbourne North. The male confronted the woman who was home alone at the time of the break-in, in the bedroom, and demanded keys to her car and cash. The female victim said she had neither to give him and wrestled with him for a short while. The male intruder ran south on Yorkshire Drive and the victim told police she saw a woman waiting outside for the male. The pair ran away. Anyone with information on the brazen home invasion is urged to call Narre Warren Police on 9705 3111.

Shop fire 'suspicious' A PILE of cardboard boxes erupted in flames at the rear of the Bargain Depot in Cranbourne on Saturday 27 August . The fire was reported to triple-zero about 10pm, and Cranbourne CFA attended and extinguished the blaze. The blaze has been deemed suspicious because of its location in the rear access lane of the South Gippsland Highway centre. Police are investigating.

Fire damages old swimming pool site AMID the rubbish at Cranbourne’s old heated pool site a fire was lit last week. The derelict site on Grant Street sustained minor damage due to the blaze on Tuesday 23 August around 12.50pm. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said the fire was lit inside the building. “There’s a large amount of rubbish inside and squatters- this isn’t the first fire there this year,” Det Clark said. CFA, ambulance and police attended the scene. Police believe no-one was injured in the blaze. An application from TM Design Group has been lodged to the City of Casey for plans to transform the abandoned and ruined site into a cinema and restaurant complex.

Students from Lyndale Secondary College, Gleneagles Secondary College, Dromana College, Lyndhurst Secondary College, Camberwell High School and Hampton Park Secondary College at the Model UN Conference in Hampton Park.

Year 9 student Jessica Hogan, from Hampton Park Secondary College, debating the world issue with other schools.

Kids debate on refugees By Georgia Westgarth IN A society scattered with new Australians, it seemed fitting for Hampton Park Secondary College students to debate a topic so close to home; refugees. Students from five different schools across the state took up the Model UN debating challenge on Friday 26 August. Eighty students from Year 7 to 12 made up teams, as small as two people,

to represent all the countries of the world. The teams then debated the global issue of: ‘Refugees: A Humanitarian Crisis’ from the stance of the country they represented. Some students said they learnt more about politics than they had bargained for. Hampton Park Secondary College, Year 10 student Allison MacCuaig said the debate was a great insight into

politics, a subject her school was yet to offer. “There was a lot of different perspectives that you must take on from different countries - it was interesting to look at it from Syria’s point of view,” Alison said. The students discussed economics, population, infrastructure and political reasoning as to why certain countries couldn’t take on more refugees and why that wouldn’t be sustainable.

Students then debated other ways countries could provide help, such as financial aid. Some students even formed a newfound sympathy for world leaders. Hampton Park Secondary College teacher, Anna Carrig, a former UN youth volunteer said the event developed more than just cleaner debating skills. “It allowed students to learn and to develop an authentic and deep under-

standing of why in the current global climate a forum for collaboration between nations is so crucial,” Ms Carrig said. “In a closing speech on the day the acting Secretary-General, the UNAA Victorian division’s Vice-President Ian Howie, spoke to the students about the significance of the purposes of the UN - to bring countries together to discuss and combat the most urgent global issues facing the world today.”

Milk’s back on the school menu SCHOOL breakfast menus around the state will be served up local dairy products in a bid to support embattled industry farmers. The Pactum Dairy Group in Shepparton will exclusively supply milk to the Victorian Government’s ‘School Breakfast Clubs’ program from 2017. The program currently provides students with free break-

fasts at several local schools, including Hampton Park Primary School, River Gum Primary School, Coral Park Primary School, Kilberry Valley Primary School and Narre Warren South P-12 College. The new deal will see dairy farmers in the Murray Goulburn region supply around 400,000 litres of milk a year to the program, benefiting the 130 farms in the district who

supply Pactum Dairy. Australia grown baked beans will also be on the menu from next year with SPC Ardmona in Shepparton suppling 80 tonnes of baked beans for the program. The SPC Ardmona factory employs 500 people and supports up to 2700 grower and supplier jobs. Deputy Premier James Merlino said one in seven Victorian

children arrived at school on an empty stomach, which affected their ability to concentrate and learn. “We’re tackling disadvantage through School Breakfast Clubs by making sure every student has the opportunity to reach their potential - and by using Victorian dairy and food suppliers we can also help boost jobs and industry, he said.

A CRANBOURNE woman with little criminal history told a court she had a compulsion to steal clothes from outlets in Fountain Gate, Frankston, and Chadstone shopping centres. The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to stealing more than $500 worth of purses, skirts, jumpers and blouses from the shops on four occasions in May, July and August. She also pleaded to attempting to thieve a drink from a fridge at a Cranbourne shopping centre outlet. When arrested on warrant at Narre Warren railway station on 28 August, she was wearing a jumper, dress and bangles stolen a few days earlier from Bayside, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told. At the time, the woman was on two corrections orders handed down in November and February for shoplifting. She had no criminal history prior to that. The accused told the court “I think it’s an addiction to take things from a shop. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said there must be a trigger for the criminal turn. “It’s unusual for a 32-yearold woman coming before the court now - and not before without some reason.

Ms O’Donnell noted the state psychiatric service Forensicare would not be able to confirm a diagnosis of kleptomania. A defence lawyer said the accused had no reason or trigger. She had no intention of on-selling the items, the lawyer said. The accused was back living with an ex-partner from a violent relationship since last August but she had no income or phone number, the lawyer said. She hadn’t seen her children, who were staying with their grandparents, for up to eight months. “I don’t know how suitable the Cranbourne address is, her lawyer said. “Obviously she does not think it’s suitable enough for her children to live there. This contradicted a Department of Corrections report that stated the woman was “essentially homeless, Ms O’Donnell noted. Ms O’Donnell said she was reluctant to jail the woman without knowing more about her. The magistrate deferred sentence for a CREDIT bail assessment on 2 September, with a corrections order further down the track.

ON THURSDAY 25 August your newspaper published a council sponsored advertisement stating that Casey council wants to know what vision residents have for the future of this municipality. I’m afraid the future in Casey is not looking good. As the hotel industry and RSL clubs are being allowed to dominate the Casey community by financially exploiting residents with poker machines - machines made to mesmerise and promote gambling addiction. Casey’s future has now been seriously compromised by the failure of our local councillors and successive mayors to take a stand against a disease that is behind many social and economic problems - poker machine addiction. In fact, if anything, the number of electronic gaming machines in Casey has increased with little effective opposition from council. Over the 2014/15 period, poker machine losses amounted to $119 million, an increase of $6.1 million, the second highest losses in Victoria after Brimbank and ahead of Dandenong. On 26 August the Herald Sun’s Pokies Cash Dodge reveals that pokies venues are now also dodging laws that ban cash machines by allowing gamblers endless cash withdrawals from ATMs. Electronic gaming machines are destroying families in Casey (as they drive up crime rates) while our councillors and mayor can only talk about the need for more police and more 24 hour stations? When will our councillors and mayor start dealing with the real problem in Casey? John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

DUE to the current council elections fast approaching in October 2016, I am concerned with the amount of current councillors who are affiliated if not an active member of a political party. It is my own strong opinion that political parties have no place in councils. I am aware due to Casey council being my own municipality, that three councillors contested the 2012 state election and I am aware that if they were to be elected as a member of State Parliament they would have to resign their position as City of Casey councillors. I am sure there would have been more of this behaviour around the state in other councils as well. Given the next state elections are in 2018, then it is my firm belief that if a person is going to be a candidate for the upcoming council elections they should disclose to the people in their ward what their intentions are for the upcoming state election. Being voted to represent your ward is an honour and privilege and it should not be purely used as a stepping stone for your own political career. James Williams, Candidate for Edrington Ward, Berwick.

Soccer tipping point AS A retired soccer referee I have been saying for years that Casey Council don’t give two hoots about soccer clubs in Casey. Footy will always be number one as per the News of 25 August. I still go and watch a game on Saturday afternoon and have seen the state of the Fox Road ground after a few days of rain. It’s a bog hole for cars, also the playing pitch at one end gets water logged.

The same can be said about Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills soccer grounds. A couple of days hard rain and the grounds are unfit to play on. I can still remember when Cranbourne Soccer Club used to play near the horse track. Now as Casey Comets they play on top of an old tip. How many Casey footy clubs play on top of an old tip? D. Gardner, Hampton Park.

Janice Bateman, centre, served as City of Berwick mayor and councillor between 1971 and 1984. THE City of Berwick’s first female mayor, Janice Bateman, OAM, died on 24 August aged 81. Ms Bateman served on the council between 1971 and 1984. She stood for state parliament twice unsuccessfully, first for the Australian Democrats in the Lower House seat of Dandenong in 1979. Her second tilt was for the Liberals in the Upper House seat of Eumemmerring in 1988. She told Star News in 2010 that she’d

tried to “always act with honesty, integrity and compassion” in her 40 years of public life. She strived for women to step up to make the changes they wanted to see. “It is so important that as women we accept the right and responsibility to be a part of the decision-making process if we want our world to be a better place.” Ms Bateman was a former state and national president of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association in 1975-’78. In 1985 she received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community and local government. She died at Lyrebird Village, Drouin. Her funeral was held at St Andrews Uniting Church, Bunyip, on Wednesday 31 August. WHERE is the Cranbourne cinema at? According to City of Casey manager, Duncan Turner, council is: “Waiting for the applicant to satisfy its State Government Metropolitan Levy obligations before council can process the application”.

A TOORADIN man was keen to get passersby to help push-start his car parked outside Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 August. The man had just appeared in court on several driving offences. The court was told the man had an acquired brain injury, requiring medical and VicRoads’ clearance to drive again. Police also failed to have his vehicle forfeited. The court was told by the man’s lawyer the car had been “inoperable” and had been destroyed. Star News hopes it wasn’t the same car that refused to turn over in the Pultney Street car park. A MAN was given some “think time” to reconsider a tasty defence for driving with a mobile phone at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The man, representing himself, had allegedly been spotted by police holding a phone to his ear on two separate occasions within minutes, but claimed to the court he was eating a biscuit. The man was perhaps wisely given a chance to consult a lawyer.

Cruel Casey By Georgia Westgarth THE RSPCA has released shocking new evidence that depicts City of Casey residents as the worst for committing violent and cruel acts on animals. Casey ranked first out of 79 local council areas for animal cruelty. Some 11,840 reports of animal cruelty were made to the RSPCA throughout Victoria, and the largest proportion of those came from the Casey region. The analysis identified 15 council areas that received more than 300 animal cruelty

reports last financial year. Casey topped the list with 566 reports, while Greater Geelong City Council came in second with 554 recorded reports. Neighbouring district Cardinia Shire also made the top 15 councils with 349 and Greater Dandenong City Council recorded 303 reports, rounding out the list. The majority of cruelty reports in Casey related to dogs, with 329 reports. Cruelty towards cats made up 67 reports and concerns for horses were called through to the RSPCA 88 times.

Many of the reports in Casey related to poor hygiene, grooming and housing conditions. Some 77 reports related to animals being beaten or wounded in the region. RSPCA CEO Dr Liz Walker said a particularly disturbing trend was that many of the issues reported involved “very basic animal welfare matters,” such as the way animals are housed and fed. “We know that the community is becoming more concerned about animal welfare which may be part of the reason for the continued rise in report numbers,” Dr Walker said.

Housing for those fleeing abuse By Georgia Westgarth THE City of Casey is home to the largest family violence policing unit, and will soon be home to refuges for women and children escaping abuse. The Casey region is set to receive eight new homes for women and children seeking a safe haven. National not-for-profit housing provider, Community Housing Ltd, will provide the homes as part of the State Government’s $50 million ‘Rapid Housing Assistance Fund’. The funding is part of a ‘housing blitz’ announced by the State Government in response to recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The housing initiative in-

cludes the purchase of 184 social housing properties across the state and up to $1.4 million for head leases of 124 social housing rentals in priority areas. Community Housing Ltd Victorian manager Shari McPhail said the City of Casey alone had experienced a 65 per cent increase in the number of reported cases of family violence from 2010 to 2014. “This much-needed funding will provide additional safe, secure and affordable homes for women and their children who have experienced family violence or have become homeless as a result,” Ms McPhail said. “The properties and will be located in close proximity to public transport and schools

to ensure the tenants maintain their links to the local services and community.” The eight homes are set to be available in Casey by the end of 2016. Ms McPhail said Community Housing Ltd had obtained funds to secure premises in Latrobe city and East Gippsland. Mayor fights the invaders By Cam Lucadou-Wells CASEY Mayor Sam Aziz has called for a special council meeting on the “on-going escalation” of home invasions in the municipality as the State Government introduces “tough new laws”. On 1 September, the council will vote on Cr Aziz’s motion to lobby Police Minister Lisa Neville and Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton for an increase in police numbers for Casey. The motion also expresses the council’s “extreme disappointment” at the trial closure of weekend-night counter service at Endeavour Hills police station, given Casey’s population is growing by 120 a week. “Many of our residents are families with children,” the motion states. “Casey needs more police presence to protect its residents, not less.”

Cr Aziz told Star News that “alarm bells are ringing” in the community over an apparent spate in violent crime and home invasions. “I don’t know how much more residents can take. People are scared to be in their own homes - we’ve never had this before.” Under the proposal, Casey would also write to the Chief Magistrate of Victoria Peter Lauritsen to voice its “disappointment” that recent sentences haven’t “reflected community expectations”. The motion also echoes La Trobe MP Jason Wood’s calls for a federal-state policing taskforce to combat violent street gangs such as Apex, and for dual citizens to be deported if they commit a violent crime in a gang setting and receive a jail sentence. It also calls on the Victorian Government to introduce beefed-up minimum sentences

A COMMUNITY crime prevention forum in Berwick remains on track after a public liability insurance issue was resolved. The Casey Residents Crime

Prevention Gathering, expected to draw hundreds, has been rescued after Casey Council provided a grant to cover the extra insurance costs. The event will feature homesecurity and self-defence experts on how to protect homes

for crimes such as aggravated burglary that are “commensurate” with the impact on victims. The day before the council meeting, the State Government has introduced legislation to create new offences of carjacking and aggravated home invasion with statutory minimum sentences. The carjacking offence alone would carry a maximum penalty of 15 years, and aggravated carjacking 25 years with a minimum non-parole period of three years and a presumption against bail. Aggravated carjacking applies when the perpetrator carries an offensive weapon or causes injury during the offence. Home invasion is defined by an intruder, in the company of others, committing an armed burglary while an occupant is in the home.

Award for ‘builder’ THIS girl can build. Chisholm Institute’s poster girl, 25-year-old Danielle Kazi-Shedden from Cranbourne, took out the ‘Community Choice Award’ at the Victorian Training Awards, on Friday 26 August. The annual state awards - now in their 62nd year - celebrate Victoria’s best apprentices, trainees and training teachers. Last year Danielle won Chisholm’s Building and Construction Apprentice of the Year, and was then nominated for a Master Builders’ award. To many people’s surprise Danielle, a shopfitter, keeps beating the boys. “I won the overall Joinery Apprentice of the Year, Metro Apprentice of the Year, and Victorian State Appren-

tice of the Year,” she said, now she has one more to add to her growing collection. Danielle is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She is living proof of the changing face of women in the workforce, on the sporting field and at the altar. A lesbian and soon-to-be mum, Danielle has a shelf dedicated to her growing awards and trophies. Danielle was up against three other males in the race to win the ‘Community Choice Award’. Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert said: “The Victorian Training Awards are an opportunity to shine a light on some of the very positive training stories in Victoria.”

LIGHTS, camera, action - Tooradin Primary School has been at it again! The school will showcase its annual school concert, ‘The Movie Producer’ on Friday 2 September at 7pm. The school’s Rachel Davis said the muchloved event was the culmination of many hours of practising dance, singing and drama. “Students value the opportunity to demonstrate all that they have been learning in performing arts, with some of the items choreographed by the students themselves,” she said. And this year’s motion pictures theme has had a lot of excitement. Rachel said the range of well-known films included: The Jungle Book, Frozen, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin and Big Hero 6. “Even the staff are getting involved,” she said. “With an interpretation of Shrek!”

Veterans at Long Tan day By Year 12 Alkira student Jenna Hutton-Murdoch ALKIRA Secondary College students and teachers commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan on Monday 22 August. They were joined by the president of the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL John Wells and Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Education Team representative Ray Weston. Some 108 young Australian and New Zealand soldiers faced 2500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops on 18 August, 1966. Held in the college’s rose garden and run by senior VCAL students with the assistance of teachers Nicole Scott and Leanne Venables, the ceremony featured the reflective poem ‘The Forgotten Veteran’ written and recited by Year 10 student Jake Barnard. Mr Wells expressed his enormous happiness that the student body was so involved with the ceremony. “Marches, memorials, medals and music are all important but what matters most is meaning - ceremonies like this carry that forward,” he said. The ceremony was mutually enriching, with the next generation recognising their shared history and representing the spirit of the present and past servicemen and women. “Working with the veterans and organising the ceremonies is really rewarding,” said senior VCAL student Bronwyn Trimmings. “I’ve enjoyed collaborating with and interviewing the veterans, they

Jake’s run to fight cancer By Georgia Westgarth A SEASONED marathon runner, Cranbourne’s Jake Ward has a new goal - to run from Brisbane to Melbourne. The 1500km run from the Gold Coast, back home to Cranbourne, is all in the name of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Jake aims to raise more than $50,000 for the foundation and

Brian’s Gourmet Meats has been helping him get there. A Father’s Day raffle was held at the Lyndhurst butcher shop on Saturday 27 August, where the team raised $702. “Brian’s Gourmet Meats had a raffle going for a few weeks, they had money tins going around and posters up everywhere, they’ve been a real help,” Jake said. Breast cancer has struck the

Ward family twice. “It all started off when my cousin Samantha passed away from breast cancer; she was only 31 at the time,” Jake said. “A few years after that, my aunty on the other side of my family had breast cancer and passed away during recovery. “I thought I’m young and I can do something. I didn’t really know what I was good at, so I decided to run.”

Fishing is good By Casey Neill

Youth Enterprise Award nominee Brooke Fernandez.

Student set for impact By Casey Neill Breakfast guest speaker Paul Worsteling with his parents Hans and Henny. 9 September 1996, aged 22. To build its profile he wrote articles for fishing magazines, gave fishing reports on radio and offered fishing guru Rex Hunt advice. In 2000 Mr Worsteling organised a fish trip for Rex’s Fishing Adventures television program. It was the start of a four-year stint on the show. “It definitely brought people into my business,” he said. The show came to an end and Mr Worsteling got the opportunity to make his own, IFISH. He films 30 half-hour and 10 hourlong episodes each year and spends up to 40 weeks a year filming around the world.

“It has done what I hoped it would do for my business,” he said. His top business advice was “always strike while the iron is hot”. “Don’t do tomorrow what you can do today,” he said. He said word of mouth couldn’t be beaten and good staff was any company’s greatest asset. “I like to rule with a feather duster,” he said. “We respect each other and get the best out of each other.” Mr Worsteling said the world constantly changed so business owners should always consider the future. “And sharing is caring,” he said, referring to social media.

CHISHOLM student Brooke Fernandez is determined to make a difference, and has already left a lasting impact on her teacher. The Endeavour Hills 20-yearold was the Youth Enterprise Award nominee at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast at Greyhounds Entertainment, Springvale, on Wednesday 24 August. Teacher Robin Griffiths revealed that graphic design and screen media student Brooke had a hearing impairment. “She told me at the end of the first class she needs to look me in the face because she lip reads,” he said. But he’s prone to wandering as he speaks so Brooke stood up and

followed him. “She really made a difference to me in the way I treat students and being mindful of others,” he said. “I have no doubt Brooke will make a difference in her career no matter what path she takes. “Brooke’s going to be one of those people that’s going to be able to engage an audience and communicate a message.” Brooke told the breakfast that she had completed a short course in interior design and would apply to study a bachelor of design next year. “I like my work to send a message to an audience,” she said. Her projects have covered social issues such as body image. “Through my work I aim to promote social acceptance,” she said. “I want to create works that make a difference.”

FISHING has taken Paul Worsteling around the world. “Fishing is not about fish,” he told the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards breakfast on Wednesday 24 August. “Fishing is about place and faces.” He’s seen baby bears in Alaska, a blue whale in Portland, Victoria, and killer wales with their babies off Exmouth, Western Australia. In Papua New Guinea Mr Worsteling visited a village where the children had never seen a white person. “I lifted up my top and showed them my belly,” he said. “They started crying and ran into the jungle.” He even met his wife, Cristy, through the hobby that he’s grown into a career spanning radio, television, books and two tackle shops. Mr Worsteling grew up on a farm in Cranbourne and found his love for fishing when his dad put 500 fish into a dam. “I went down there with a fishing pole because I just wanted to see what was under that water,” he said. “I couldn’t physically see the fish unless I actually caught them. “I became a fishing text book guru.” He caught his first fish on a school camp, made friends with a neighbour with a boat, and joined Cranbourne Angling Club. There he met a guy with plans to open a tackle shop and volunteered to help him set up. Mr Worsteling bought the business on

ZED'S AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME HE’S LJ Hooker’s number one salesman for the Melbourne/Tasmania market ... and he’s still only in his mid-twenties. Zed Nasheet of LJ Hooker Hampton Park is a young man with a lot of enthusiasm and passion for his job. Earlier this month that enthusiasm was rewarded at the annual LJ Hooker Awards at the Crown Palladium where he and the team took home a swag of awards including Best Business Growth (number of properties sold), Best Business Growth (income earned), Top Sales Person (number of transaction of income earned), Captains Club (multi-million dollar chapter top seven per cent). “I sold 28 homes in 38 days,” he said. But it’s not about the awards for Zed - he loves his job, the challenge of getting the best price and getting the property sold quickly - just ask him. He has spent his entire life living and working within the south-eastern regions of Victoria and now specialises in the real estate transactions taking place in the southeastern suburbs. Zed completed his schooling years at Dandenong Secondary College and after two years of experience in customer service, decided to enter the real estate industry to fulfil his lifelong ambition. Over the past seven years Zed has had the privilege of being able to provide a service to the local community as a valuable member of LJ Hooker Hampton Park. Though he sells properties throughout Melbourne these days as demand increases for his services. Zed is considered one of Australia’s fastest selling agents, specialising in selling properties in a record time and record prices in one day. Guest speaking and training other agents is Zed's newest passion. Over the past few years Zed has spoken at training sessions in the south-eastern suburbs about auction strategies on getting best results for both

Sharon Start took out this year’s City of Casey Lindsay King Arts Award.

Cranny’s song IT’S not an easy task to write a song about Cranbourne, but Sharon Start did. And now she’s been honoured with this year’s City of Casey Lindsay King Arts Award. A music teacher at Cranbourne West Primary School and an active folk musician, Ms Start took home the award at the Mayoral Arts Dinner on

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Red hot business rise By Alana Mitchelson NAOMI Simson sets an example for anyone with a strong passion for a new concept to launch their own business even if that might mean walking around with red helium balloons tied to their briefcase. Simson threw all of her savings into an idea that, with its early setbacks, took time to attract customers. It took passion, patience, hard work and an open mind, as well as keeping a sense of humour, for her to find success. She said her first website was basic with a red background and black writing and that the only key terms a Google search could detect from the homepage were the words ‘skip intro’. So in the initial months, Simson found herself with no money and no customers. The now nationally renowned entrepreneur and founder of the online company Red Balloon, also known for her role as a resident shark on the television show Shark Tank, recounted her journey to other businesswomen at the CaseyCardinia women’s business lunch on Friday 26 August. “I realised I had the opportunity to create intimate moments in people’s lives, Simson said. “But it took a long time to get customers on board. I used to tie red balloons to my briefcase with the website URL on it, hoping someone would see it. Hope doesn’t work as a business strategy. “It was the longest two months and three days of my life. I was so excited

Special guest speaker Naomi Simson said disengaged staff should be "let Picture: ROB CAREW free". 158211 when I had my first order - a stress buster massage for $99 - because someone believed in me. Soon Simson was faced with the decision to employ a manager, a recruiter and employees who could help her fulfil the company’s customer promise. She emphasised the importance of employee engagement. “The hardest thing for me was to let go. Initially, I did everything. I even used to blow up the balloons, she laughed. “But I knew I couldn’t do everything. “Disengaged employees cost about $17 billion a year in lost productivity. Remember that 85 per cent of engaged employees will stay with you. “The scary part is that 23 per cent of your disengaged employees - who are most likely bad mouthing you - are planning to spend their whole career with you. I say set them free. Let them go work for the competition.

Simonson likened running a small business to a rowing crew racing a boat. The leader may be the smallest, but is the only one who can see the rhythm of the river to set the strategy. Everyone else trusts the leader implicitly. They have to do the exact same thing to be truly aligned and only that makes them unstoppable. Red Balloon sold 300 experience gifts in its first year, then began selling 300 gifts a month and continued to grow each year. “There’s so much more to business success than just the idea. It’s about passion and energy; what drives you to persist every day, Simson said. “Passion can get confused with money, but real passion is something that you feel when you wake up in the morning - it annoys all your friends and family because it’s all you ever talk about.

Business profile Melise says now's the time for yoga. 158347

Featuring Stephanie Alexander Join us as we welcome Stephanie Alexander as guest speaker at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast in September.

Stepping into yoga NOW, Yoga isn’t about fancy clothes or equipment and caters to the participants level, aiming to heal and merge the body, mind and spirit. Now, Yoga is the brainchild of Melise, principal teacher and owner. Her approach to yoga is “you are perfect just as you are! “I attended my first yoga class six years ago to find strength in myself after being left feeling alone, lost, with a lack of purpose, unloved and just ugh, she said. With a background in personal training, she brings a functional modern-day yogi, anatomically easy to chew style approach to her classes. “I’ve always been interested in the human body and studied certificates three and four in fitness, effective movement train-

ing and TRX suspension training at the Personal Training Academy, Fitness business school, introduction to yoga, Pilates, Tour De Cycle and Body Sculpt Boot Camp at Steiner Leisure. “I decided to take a job on a cruise ship and on-board I would teach various classes including yoga and meditation. She said being able to see the change she could bring in a short time, she decided to investigate yoga more, completing an advanced diploma of yoga at the Australian Yoga Academy. She said she had always been attracted to stillness and the bigger questions in life and has always been in touch with her spirit. “Yoga will help you be in touch with yours as you use the yoga space as a stepping stone to the other minutes of your day to move forward in your

life, she said. “Want a stronger sense of direction? You don’t need to do anything except show up and be ‘you’, take time for yourself, by doing so learn how to love and look after those you love greater than you ever thought could be true. “No matter your experience or fitness level, we can cater to your level through meditation, breathing techniques, dynamic movements, static poses, improving your strength, balance, flexibility, muscle integrity, posture, from the inside out, we aim to heal and merge the body, mind and spirit. Now, Yoga is located at Amberly Park Shopping Centre, 16/245 Ormond Road, Narre Warren South. For inquiries phone or text Melise on 0439 638 958.

Connecting people with the local sport they love.

White, red and black By Russell Bennett IT’S the way former Dandenong Stingrays gun defender Brandon White was told he’d make his AFL debut for St Kilda on the weekend that spoke volumes about both his progression as a young player, and the Saints’ march forward under Alan Richardson. “Mate, we like the way you’re going. Your last six weeks at VFL level have been really positive, so you’re going to play this week (in the AFL),” Richardson said in a heart-to-heart in his office with White, captured by St Kilda video cameras. “I reckon when it’s the last game of the year it can come across as ‘we’re just going to give a young bloke a go’ but no, we’re not doing that. “You’ve got to earn the right to play - you don’t just get a game because you’re talented or because that’s the journey you’re on. “You’ve got to play the way we want you to play, and that’s what I’ve liked. I haven’t seen every game in that six-week period live but what I’ve liked when I’ve been there, mate, is how physical you’ve been and how hard you’re able to play on and you’re starting to give us a bit more of that drive. “Enjoy it, and just get out there and play Saints footy.” The News was there, at the White family home in Berwick last November, when Brandon’s name was read out with pick 40 at the National Draft held in Adelaide. “I’m excited to be going down there (to the Saints) and earning my respect from the team mates, (and) coaching staff and all the hard work is ahead really,” he said at the time. White’s VFL form in the weeks building up to his selection in the Saints’ side was impressive, booting bags of five and four goals, and another two of two each while also being named in the best four times. On Sunday, in St Kilda’s thrashing of Brisbane at Etihad Stadium, Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt was undoubtedly the star of the show with 26 touches, a staggering 21 marks, and nine goals, but White also made an impact with 13 disposals and a goal. His former club, Dandenong Stingrays, will launch its bid for a maiden TAC Cup premiership from top spot on the ladder when it takes on Murray Bushrangers in Sunday’s qualifying final at IKON Park.

Brandon White, left, and Dandenong Stingrays team mate Bailey Rice, were both selected by the Saints at last November’s National Draft. White debuted for St Kilda on the weekend. 147549 Picture: JARROD POTTER

For the just the third time in the 25-year history of the club the Stingrays have finished at the top of the TAC Cup ladder, joining the minor premiership teams of 1997 and 2010. Ironically, it was current-day coach Craig Black that was co-captain of the 1997 outfit that fell agonisingly short on grand final day. Black believes this current crop of stars is building the necessary belief to go all the way after winning seven games during the home-and-away season by 15 points or less. “They don’t like getting beaten, and that’s a very good trait to have in the TAC Cup because all the players have talent, it’s the little things that

make the difference,” Black said. “Obviously a little bit of fortune plays a part but if you start winning a few by under a kick it can build massive belief within a group. Hopefully this group can go one step further than we did in 1997.” The Rays defeated fifth-placed Sandringham, fourth-placed Murray and second-placed Geelong in three of their last four matches. “Obviously we’re happy with our season and where we finished, but the best thing is we’ve earned that position by beating good opposition in finals like matches,” Black said.

Cricket umpires needed soon

Cavs still in with a chance By Russell Bennett THE Casey Cavaliers’ Big V basketball men’s and women’s teams will both be playing catch-up this weekend in an effort to walk away with their respective competition’s crowns. The Division 2 women’s team went down by the narrowest of margins, 40-39, to the home side at Melbourne University last Saturday night. It was a real defensive struggle throughout the contest with both sides shooting just 20 per cent from the field in the first quarter. In fact, neither team could manage double-figures scoring in either of the first two quarters, while the Cavs made just one field goal in the last - shooting at six per cent from the field. Leddy Katelyn led the way

for Melbourne Uni with 10 points and 1 boards while Tarryn Wilkin had a big 16-point, 17-rebound double-double for the Cavs. Game two of the best-ofthree grand final series will be held at ‘The Fortress’ - the Cavs’ home floor - this Saturday night at the Casey Indoor Leisure Centre from 7.30pm. Game three, if needed, will also be at The Fortress from 12.30pm the following day. Stewart Baird’s Division 1 men’s team, meanwhile, was given a masterclass on their home floor on Sunday afternoon by Warrnambool star Nathan Sobey. He finished with an incredible 45-point, 11-rebound double-double on 52 per cent shooting as the Seahawks stormed to a 19-point win, 9778. Import big man Xavier

Blount finished with a doubledouble of his own - 18 points and 10 boards - while Alex Gynes had 17 points and 8 boards while making all bar one of his field goal attempts. As per the team’s hallmark, it was an even contribution from the Cavs with Dean Johnson (10 points and 14 boards) and Brent Hobba (13 points and 12 boards despite struggling from the field) both recording doubledoubles, while Matt Witherden top-scored with 19 points and Bevan Camilleri had 17. Game two of their bestof-three series will be held at The Arc Sports Stadium in Warrnambool this Saturday night from 7pm while game three - if required - will be held at the same venue the following day from 1pm.

The Stingrays success has been built around a solid core of players, with Daniel Allsop, Lachie Gill-Renouf, Matt LaFontaine and Bailey Morrish all having consistent seasons. Sam Fowler leads the goal-kicking charts with 33 goals, with Allsop (28), Tom De Koning (17) and x-factor Josh Battle (16 from six games) set to provide the Bushrangers' defence with plenty of headaches on the weekend. Mason DeWit and Hunter Clark have been in top form of late and will be players to keep an eye on. The Stingrays v Bushrangers clash begins at 2pm.

Ben Louis and his Casey Cavaliers team mates will look to rebound quickly this weekend from a loss in the first game of their best-of-three grand final series against the Warrnambool Seahawks. 158500 Picture: ROB CAREW

CRICKET is just around the corner and the Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association (DDCUA) is recruiting for the coming season. If you have a basic knowledge of the laws of cricket, you can watch the game from the best seat in the house while earning some handy cash on Saturdays over the summer. The Association provides umpires for seven grades of senior turf competition in one of the state’s highest standard regional competitions. The DDCUA region stretches from Beaconsfield in the east to Mordialloc, and southward as far as Cranbourne. The DDCUA provides training to new umpires and ongoing development courses. You will need your own transport. For further information, contact DDCUA Secretary Brett Roberts on 0488 905 805. An information session for new umpires will be held at the DDCUA headquarters at Shepley Oval, Pultney Street, Dandenong on Wednesday 14 September at 7.30pm.

Sting in the Scorps tale By David Nagel CASEY Scorpions will launch its premiership bid from the summit of the VFL ladder after the minor premiership was secured with a 30-point victory over Box Hill Hawks at City Oval on Saturday. The Scorpions leap-frogged Collingwood at the pointy end of the ladder after the Pies’ 12game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Footscray. The Scorps will now host the in-form Bulldogs in Saturday’s qualifying final at Casey Fields. Box Hill had the advantage of the breeze in the first term, leading by two goals at quarter time before the Scorps hit back, taking a nine-point advantage to the main break. The Hawks, with AFL premiership players Matt Spangher and Will Langford leading the way, regained control with a 4.3 to 1.3 third quarter. Ben Kennedy struck early

for the Scorps in the final term, Langford striking back, before Justin Plapp’s boys applied the acid in the last 20 minutes of the season. Goals to Jake Spencer, Kennedy, Cam Pederson, Dean Terlich and Viv Michie quickly turned an arm-wrestle into a knock-out punch. The Scorps had a staggering 16 shots at goal in the final term, kicking 6.10 for the quarter. Ball-magnets Alex NealBullen (32 disposals), Michie (31), Clayton Oliver (29) and Jack Grimes (26) were all instrumental in the victory, while Spencer took control of the ruck when it was most needed in the final term. Kennedy and Pederson finished with three each for the winners, while Lynden Dunn joined a dominant midfield on the best player’s list. The Scorps look well placed to bury a horrific finals record over the last eight years, with

their balance between attack and defence clearly the best in the competition. The Scorps have the best attacking record, scoring 1829 points for the season, while Dunn and Co have kept the opposition under wraps, allowing just 1090 through their clutches. Saturday’s qualifying final against the Bulldogs kicks off at 2pm.

CRANBOURNE’S 2011 premiership coach Doug Koop is back in the fold of the South East Football Netball League after signing a two-year deal to coach the Officer Football Club seniors. Koop, and his loyal assistant Billy King, signed on the dotted line on Friday ending a threeyear hiatus from the league. Koop’s last game as coach of Cranbourne came in the 2013 grand final, a one-point loss to Narre Warren inflicted with the last kick of the season. Koop coached Dromana in the Nepean Football League in 2014/15, before taking a break from coaching this year. Koop said he was delighted to be back. “It’s great to be back in the league and to come to a club that I believe has a very exciting future,” Koop said. “There are a lot of good kids on the list and I think we can

mould them into better players and move a few places up the ladder. Part of our plan is to bring some players with us and hopefully push for finals next year.” Koop takes over Officer in an eerily similar situation to his first season at Cranbourne in 2008. The Eagles, who had finished tenth, tenth and ninth in the three years preceding Koop’s appointment, finished seventh in his first year before finishing top three for the next five years. Officer has not made a finals appearance in the 12-year history of the Casey Cardinia-South East Football Leagues. Officer president Barry O’Loughlin said the club was thrilled that it had got their man. “We put together a panel who profiled the type of coach we think can take us forward and Doug filled the bill perfectly,” O’Loughlin said.

“We actually approached him because we believe he has the experience and the credentials to do something special with this playing list. He took over Cranbourne in a very similar situation to what we believe we are in right now, hopefully we can get similar results.” O’Loughlin said Koop’s appointment would bring great excitement to the club. “Of course it will create excitement, to bring someone of the stature of Doug Koop to Officer is going to bring real enthusiasm to the group. He came with a plan, he has a vision, and we’re more than happy with his appointment.” O’Loughlin wanted to thank outgoing coach Brad Jones for his three years at the helm. “Brad came in with the vision of improving the culture of this football club and has been successful in achieving that,” he said. “We wish him well with his future endeavours.”

Stars for the sprints ONE of greyhound racing’s newest and most exciting concepts, Speed Star, will be run this Thursday night at Sandown Park. Eight of the country’s fastest sprinters will go head-to-head in four match races - as pure as racing gets. The four matches will be conducted in rapid succession with gaps of approximately 10 minutes between matches. Qualification for the series was based on times run at Sandown Park between 1 June 2016 and 28 August 2016 including a series of trials on the three Sundays leading in, with the eight fastest nominated greyhounds qualifying for the series. Each greyhound wearing an odd numbered rug will jump from the inside box (box 1), and each wearing an even numbered box will jump from the outside box (box 3). The series carries $61,000 in prize money, with the winner of each match picking up $10,000, with a further $15,000 bonus for the fastest time and $6000 for second. Headlining the event is without doubt Australia’s best sprinter Zambora Brockie, fresh from Saturday’s National Sprint final in Adelaide. He enters the series as the number one ranked greyhound with a scintillating time of 29.140 and is almost certain to start series favourite. CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS CRANBOURNE RSL is preparing for another huge season of pennant bowls and continued the build up with the playing of the Jack Hosie Tournament on the weekend. The tournament is played in honour of Jack, a long-standing hard-working member of the club who sadly passed away two years ago. The RSL also conducted its opening day on Saturday, with life members of the club opening the greens for season 2016/17.

great success during the upcoming bowls season. New Club Chairman, Chris Griffiths, made a passionate pledge that the new season was full of promise, and that he was very proud of the club and he was looking forward to success from the pennant teams this year as well as the continued community engagement that the club provides.

The club provides an opportunity for serious bowlers and social bowlers to engage in all aspects of belonging to a genuine great local community club and having fun. With pennant bowls, midweek social bowls, barefoot bowls and excellent bar facilities provided to members and guests, Chris and ladies' president Kath Dudink welcome new members to the club.

RECENTLY signed Western Bulldogs marquee player Ellie Blackburn has been cleared to play for her new club in Saturday’s all-stars match against Melbourne at the Whitten Oval. The star on-baller from Endeavour Hills has forged her reputation in a Demons jumper ever since the first exhibition match took place at the MCG in 2013. But her recent signing with the Bulldogs as one of two marquee players for next year’s inaugural AFL National Women’s League left the AFL with little choice but to clear her for this week’s clash. Eight clubs, Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs have been granted licences to compete in 2017 - with each club allowed two marquee signings. Blackburn, who plays for Melbourne Uni in the Women’s VFL competition, will be joined by Katie Brennan from the Darebin Falcons at the Bulldogs next year. Blackburn already has a CV the envy of most footballers around the nation. Multiple Victorian representations have led to All-Australian selection at both senior and youth girls’ level, while she has been part of the Melbourne exhibition squad since its inception four years ago. Blackburn said she and Brennan had already had brief discussions about the importance of leadership around the club next year. She said they had also spoken about setting the bar high for the players that would eventually be their team-mates. “Katie and I have spoken about it a little bit and the main thing we want to create is a club culture that players want to be a part of,” she said. “That’s the most important thing, to build that culture which builds a platform for everything around it. And the development of the players that haven’t been exposed to the highest level is going to be really important, and the girls that have been exposed to it will need to play a role. We all want to be proud of the competition and try and make it a good product to be associated with.” Saturday’s all-stars match begins at 7.10pm and entry is free.

Eagles the winners By David Nagel CROSS-CREEK rivals Beaconsfield and Berwick have shown enormous character to score epic come-from-behind victories in week one of the South East Football Netball League finals series. The Eagles twice came from 25-points down to defeat Doveton in a classic elimination final at Holm Park Reserve, while the Wickers overcame a 21-point half-time deficit to steamroll Narre Warren in Saturday’s qualifying final at Edwin Flack Reserve. “Today was really character building,” said Berwick cocaptain Michael Harold after the match. “We were 20 points down at half time, they had the momentum and the chips were down. Even at three quarter time we were still behind kicking into a slight breeze. It was an uncharacteristic win for us, we had to scrap and dig deep and get the game on out terms but it just shows that when we play our brand of footy we can really take it to them. I couldn’t be prouder.” And Beaconsfield skipper Daniel Mislicki was equally effusive about his teams’ performance. “It was a big effort to come back from that far back, especially in a final, I’m proud of the boys the way they lifted when the game was on the line,” Mislicki said. Berwick, who will now play Cranbourne in Saturday’s second semi-final at Pakenham, was denied its usual run and carry by the Magpies in the first half. The Magpies trailed by three points at quarter time, but kicked 3.6 to 0.0 in the second term to take full control of the contest. Realistically, they should have six goals ahead at half time. But Berwick surged after the

break, kicking eight goals to three to run out 14-point winners. Ben Kearns kicked three for the Wicks; Jayden Joyce was superb down back, while the run and carry of half backs Ash Smith, Michael Riseley and Jo West returned in the nick of time in the second half. Andrew Hunter kicked three, Dean Kelly two, while Josh Tonna, Michael Collins and Dylan Quirk were influential for the Magpies around the ground. Doveton looked home against Beaconsfield on Sunday, but the Eagles rallied to score a thrilling two-point victory in a classic battle for survival. The Doves led by 12 points at half time and kicked the opening two of the third term to kick out to a commanding 25-point lead. Nick Battle was running riot for the Doves, but late goals to youngsters Kade Lynch and Jake Bowd gave the Eagles a sniff heading to the final break. Former Hawthorn forward Beau Dowler started clunking marks in the last, with his goal at the 15-minute mark followed by six-pointers to Josh Dodsworth and Mislicki to give the Eagles a famous victory. “He (Dowler) was huge with some of the marks he took, but some of the young blokes like Jake Bowd off half back, Michael Misso, they gave us a spark, and Scotty (Meyer) was really important against (Russ) Gabriel in the ruck,” Mislicki said after the match. Dowler and Troy McDermott finished with two each for the winners, while the effort of Trent Stokoe to limit the impact of Battle in the second half played a crucial role in the victory. The Eagles will start underdogs against Narre Warren in Sunday’s first semi-final at Edwin Flack Reserve.

Coach revs it up By David Nagel WOW, what an opening to the South East Football Netball League finals series on the weekend! A tough and bruising encounter between Beaconsfield and Hampton Park, followed by a classic Sunday showdown between Doveton and Tooradin - the weekend simply had it all. Let’s start with Hampton Park’s 50-43 win over Beaconsfield in Saturday’s qualifying final, a rough house affair that saw neither team take a backward step in a highly entertaining contest. Beaconsfield suffered an early blow with Amanda McKenna (C) going down with a knee injury, replaced by Rylee Nelson in the pivot. Neither team could shake the other in the first half, with big collisions the order of the day. Beaconsfield defenders Dani Cameron (GK) and Kaela Hughes (GD) were having a great battle with Brooke Kiely (GS) and Birgitta Nemaric (GA), while Nelson and Monalisa Groom (C) were matching motors through the midcourt. Things were tight all over the court - but the Redbacks made their move in the third term after a rev up from coach Kylie Kibble.

“It was a really scratchy first half for us, but we still won both quarters by a goal each,” Kibble said. “I said ‘Come on girls, we’re not playing our best netball, so let’s play our best netball and finish strong and we had a great third quarter.” The Redbacks looked like a real contender in the third term, with Rania Waller (GK) and Karli Foster (GD) super strong down back, while Maddi Hanlen (WD) and Natu Fahnana (WA) lifted their rating through the midcourt. And Groom, well she kept on her toes in the second half, working up and down the court with real intent. The Redbacks’ 14-8 third term proved to be the difference between the two sides. Doveton and Tooradin - for very different reasons- will still be shaking their heads in disbelief after the Doves came from behind to nail the Seagulls 40-39 in an absolute epic elimination final at Holm Park Reserve. You could write your own ticket on the Doves at quarter time, with the Seagulls 15-8 ahead and playing some silky skilled netball. The front half of the court was working beautifully, with Alex Duff (GA) and Dayle Willis (GS) making the most of some brilliant work from

“Come on girls, lift,” Hampton Park coach Kylie Kibble gets animated during her half-time address on Saturday. Her words worked, the Redbacks controlling the third term on their way to a seven-goal victory over Beaconsfield. 158497 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Holly Gillespie (WD), Shona Wells (C) and Tara Smith (WA), while Ebony Dolan (GD) and coach Kelly Haynes (GK) kept the Doves’ shooters to just the eight goals for the quarter. But the Doves - slowly but surely - worked their way into the contest, winning the next two quarters 11-9 and 12-8 to trail 31-32 at three quarter time. Cara Humbert (GK) and Liz Edwards (GD) were superb for the Doves in the final term, while a fresh

Aggie Seeto (WD) joined Aila Pera (WA) and Hayley Stewart (C) in the engine room. But the Doves comefrom-behind victory was sealed by Shae Gee (GA), who showed nerves of steel to shoot six goals in the final term. Finals continue this week with Narre Warren and Hampton Park squaring off in Saturday’s second semi-final at Pakenham before Beaconsfield and Doveton put their seasons on the line in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick.

Corolla turns on hybrid By Derek Ogden WHILE other automobile manufacturers take varying roads to low emissions, Toyota is steadfastly sticking to the petrol / electric hybrid route with its new addition to the genre, the Corolla Hybrid.

With official fuel consumption put at 4.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle, this is good enough to give the vehicle a range of almost 1100 km depending on driving style. The fifth hybrid in Toyota's Australian line-up, joining Camry, Prius, Prius c and Prius v, the hybrid version of the popular Corolla arrives just months shy of the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first Corolla in Japan in October 1966. With a comprehensive list of equipment, some not offered on other Corollas in Australia, the hybrid is priced from $26,990, putting it between the petrol-only SX and ZR hatches. A chiselled front end sees the radiator grille in two sections, the upper section dominated by the familiar Toyota logo and flanked by auto-levelling bi-LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, the lower portion incorporating fog lamps. A steeply raked windscreen ensures the car slices through the air cleanly, which is then directed over a roof that

slopes to a small spoiler. Rear light wraps around the corners giving the Corolla a broad stance from behind. The car rolls on 16-inch alloy wheels with five sets of V-twin spokes. The car comes in any of the eight exterior paint colours available across the Corolla range. The passenger cabin exhibits the premium materials and quality of a more expensive vehicle, with dark upholstery and soft-touch surfaces all round. Head room is adequate, shoulder space likewise but rear seat legroom is tight even with average-size occupants up front. With the hybrid battery positioned under rear seat and temporary spare wheel under the floor, the latest Corolla retains the standard hatch's 360 litres of luggage space. The rear seat backs fold flat for even more room. A small 4.2-inch colour touchscreen is positioned just below air-con vents in the central dashboard area not quite at the driver’s eye level. The screen displays clear full-colour maps for the standard navigation and is sued to operate the audio and Toyota Link connected mobility functions. Air-conditioning controls are separate from the screen, positioned at the

The Corolla Hybrid maintains the look of the petrol-only models, with the added advantage of fuel economy. base of the centre stack. The Corolla's Hybrid Synergy Drive system uses an atkinson-cycle 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and 60 kW electric motor. Efficiency features for the petrol engine include cooled exhaust-gas recirculation, an electric water pump and a compression ratio of 13.0:1, compared with 10.0:1 on the petrol-only Corolla.

MODEL RANGE Toyota Corolla 1.8-litre petrol / electric hybrid CVT automatic from $26,990

The nickel-metal hydride battery, which puts out maximum power of 60 kW and top torque of 207 Nm, is charged by the petrol engine and regenerative braking. Passive safety is taken care of by seven airbags, active safety includes stability, traction control and ABS anti-skid brakes with brakes assist and brake-force distribution.

Reversing is made easy with a camera incorporating guidelines. The first pleasant surprise about the Corolla Hybrid test vehicle was the keyless entry and petrol engine start. Hybrid power is all about efficiency in performance, economy and environmental protection. During our period with the test car it clocked up fuel consumption of 4.6 litres per 100 kilometres on a mix of suburban and motorway driving, compared to the official figure of 4.1 litres per kilometre under similar conditions. That official fuel consumption of 4.1 litres compares with 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres for automatic Corolla pure petrol hatches.Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology is capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, or a combination of both, depending on driving conditions. These are called into operation by buttons on the centre console. Setting off under electric power alone is ponderous and needs the input of the petrol engine to push it along. The Toyota range is available for test drive at Berwick Toyota, 751 Princes Highway, Berwick, on 9707 4455; Pakenham Toyota, 33 Commercial Drive, Pakenham, on 5945 1777; Cranbourne Toyota, 284 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, on 5955 1111.
