AFTER nearly 40 years at Healesville Primary School, arts co-ordinator Lillian Triffett Walsh has hung up her smock and called it a day. The teacher, who started at Healesville in 1979, finished up on Thursday 1 September, leaving behind a legacy of arts programs, concerts, murals and multiple generations of students. Pictured with students Eloise, Ashton, Darcy, Amelia and Isabelle, some of the many students at Healesville whose parents Ms Triffett Walsh also taught, the teacher said she had received cards and well-wishes from students and staff members past and present before finishing up. THE Yarra Ranges is a hot spot for animal cruelty and more prevention activity needs to be taken, according to the Victoria RSPCA. RSPCA statistics released last week revealed that of the 79 local government areas in Victoria, Yarra Ranges ranked fourth in the number of cases, behind only Casey City, Greater Geelong and Melbourne City council areas. In the Yarra Ranges, welfare concerns for horses, dogs and cats made up most of the issues. From data compiled throughout the 2016 financial year, the RSPCA revealed there were 460 reports received in the Yarra Ranges, with 154 related to horses. Dogs in the Yarra Ranges also fared incredibly poorly, with 156 cases reported and five related to puppies. Also, 36 cases related to cats and seven for kittens. The concerns revealed were wide ranging, with everything from reports of underweight animals, to concerns raised about hygiene, grooming and housing conditions. Surprisingly, Catherine Grayson from Harmony Reins Animal Haven, which operates in the Yarra Ranges and aims to give neglected animals a second chance, said she wasn’t surprised over the statistics. Ms Grayson said during her time with the animal haven she continues to see cases of animal cruelty in the region. “Sometimes people just don’t understand the commitment required, especially with a larger animal such as a horse,” she said. “Just because horses have grass around them, doesn’t mean they don’t need to be fed and cared for. “Owners might be a bit tired after work, or it might be raining outside, so they might not get fed. “Sometimes it’s a case of out of

sight, out of mind. “It might be owners are getting lazy and not realising how much harm they’re doing.” Ms Grayson said that her animals will always get fed before she does. However, Ms Grayson said in many cases the abuse wasn’t intentional. This might be due to an illness or other issues with the animal owner. Though, she encouraged owners to speak up if they were finding it tough to look after their pet. “Don’t ever think there isn’t an option, simply do your research and there are people out there who will help you,” she said. “There is always someone who will put up there hand to help you out.” Ms Grayson it could be as simple as conducting a Google search in order to find help. Among the statistics in the report included 90 issues involving sick or injured animals which did not receive vet treatment. There were 92 reports of animals with insufficient food, 64 with insufficient water and 75 with insufficient shelter. Also damning was the fact that of the 1154 animals that were abandoned state-wide, 41 of those came from the Yarra Ranges. There were 35 concerns raised about animals being beaten or wounded. Dr Liz Walker, CEO of RSPCA Victoria, said that geographic analysis of cruelty reporting data will support RSPCA Victoria’s efforts to target its prevention activity to the areas that need it most. “RSPCA Victoria’s vision is ending cruelty to all animals - and we know that prevention is the key to ending cruelty,” Dr Walker said. “Over the next 12 months, we will be using this data to help us identify the areas that would benefit most from community education and support.”

Passing of an era of artistr y

Cartoon

By Jesse Graham IT WAS the end of an era for Healesville Primary School when arts co-ordinator Lillian Triffett Walsh finished up last week, after 37 years of teaching. After starting at the school in 1979, Ms Triffett Walsh finished up on Thursday, 1 September, to move to Tasmania to assist family members with health needs. She was farewelled by past and present staff members in a morning tea on Friday, 26 August, where she spoke to the Mail about her time at the school. Though the school itself changed dramatically in her time, with a fire destroying some of the original buildings in the 1990s, she said a standout over the years was working with the Disadvantaged Schools Program. “This was a period of innovation and community connectedness, with many parents actively involved in planning and supporting school programs,” she said. “Some of these initiatives laid the foundation of current programs such as the current camping program and computers in the classroom - it was great to be a part of this.” Before starting at Healesville, Ms Triffett Walsh worked at Moorilim Primary School and was acting head teacher at

Lillian Triffett Walsh with a card made by her students. 158830 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Woods Point Rural School. As an art teacher, Ms Triffett Walsh has been involved in creating props, backdrops and programs for concerts at Healesville Primary; as an artist, she has created murals for the school, the Yarra Valley Railway and the United Nations of Australia. Post-Black Saturday, Ms Triffett Walsh worked with the Melbourne Museum to display artworks from students, created as a therapeutic outlet after the disaster. She said that working at the school for several decades, many of her current students at the school had parents who she also taught in years past. “I was on leave for a period of time and came back this year, and some of the parents came in

to see me when I came back ... and it’s been interesting that a few of the younger children have sort of realised that I’ve been here before,” she said. “They’ll say, ‘Oh, do you know such-and-such a person?’, and they’re realising that I’ve had that early established link with some of the families. “It’s been ... a very rewarding experience being here and it’s been quite a privilege to be involved with families in such a long-term way, and that’s something that many teachers don’t get an opportunity to do.” Though she has finished up working at the school, Ms Triffett Walsh said she would try to come back to Healesville for Healesville Primary School’s 150th birthday celebrations in October.

Train near misses By Victoria Stone-Meadows YARRA Valley Railway and Healesville police are less than impressed with road users’ behaviour surrounding the level railway crossing on the Kinglake-Healesville Road in Healesville. Vice-president of Yarra Valley Railway, Brett Whelan, said road users ignoring the crossing signals had become a serious problem. Reports from Yarra Valley Railway reveal that for every 14 train crossings at this particular spot, there is a car that doesn’t comply with the light directives, or has a near miss with the oncoming train. Mr Whelan said if drivers continued to ignore the crossing signals it was just a matter of time before the worst happens. “We’ve had a number of near misses and a larger number of noncompliance issues,” he said. “The drivers of the trains are required under law to blow their whistles at certain intervals but road drivers are ignoring that and cutting in front of trains. “We are afraid we are going to have more near misses and the most unfortunate thing is an accident and there have been some really close calls.” Mr Whelan said every time there was a vehicle driver that doesn’t comply with the crossing signals, police were made aware of the incident.

HUNDREDS of plants have taken root along the banks of the Grace Burn Creek at the Healesville RSL, as part of a program to improve platypus habitats and beautify the area. Melbourne Water contractors Reveg Works were at work at the RSL on Wednesday 24 August, installing 300 indigenous plants along the Grace Burn as part of a project run by Healesville Environment Watch Incorporated (HEWI). The works are the latest in a series under the Grace Burn Project, a HEWI program funded for three years from 2015 by Yarra Ranges Council. RSL manager Gary Slater said the business signed up and would be doubling the plants installed, to a total of about 800 by next year. “From the RSL’s perspective, we’ve got a large parcel of land bordering the creek,” Mr Slater said. “We wanted to ensure the continuity of vegetation through it - it was weed-infested, overgrown, it was also a high risk area for people.

Cash and electronics stolen YARRA Ranges detectives are investigating a burglary in Lilydale that saw thousands of dollars worth of cash and electronics stolen from a home. Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Adrian Berardi said that between 11.30am and 1pm on Thursday, 1 September, unknown persons entered a property on Swansea Road, Lilydale, and stole cash, jewellery and a laptop computer. Det Sgt Berardi said the stolen items were worth $9000 altogether and that there were no signs of forced entry. He urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Kevin Cronin from Healesville Police with Brett Whelan from Yarra Valley Railway at the dangerous Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS level crossing in Healesville 158881 “Every time it happens, it goes through our operations people and that all goes to the police, so the police are fully informed and we take licence plate numbers when we can and that’s sent straight to police,” he said. “Every week we are sending notices through to Victoria Police at Healesville so they are fully aware of the situation.” When the train ran last Sunday at least four noncompliance incidents were recorded at the level crossing

and sent to the police. Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Tim Stewart said the level crossing had been a point of issue for road drivers for some time. “It’s obviously not your standard train crossing there, and I think sometimes people aren’t expecting it, and because there’s no physical boom gate, people get quite confused as well,” he said. “It’s fairly dangerous.” Leading Sen Const Stewart urged

drivers to be cautious around trains and to obey the train signal crossings like any other traffic light. “People need to take it easy and be mindful of trains,” he said. “The penalty is a $777 fine and four demerit points for failing to stop at a level crossing.” Leading Sen Const Stewart said Healesville police would be patrolling more often and would follow up reports from Yarra Valley Railway of vehicles failing to stop at the signals.

Plants bring Grace to creek dreams By Jesse Graham

In brief

“So we wanted to sort of link with the community in doing what they were already doing on the other side of the creek and marry it in, continue it along.” Works had already taken place at The Nook, across the creek, to remove weeds and install indigenous plants along the creek bank. HEWI’s Maureen Bond said the project was mainly focused on properties along Farnham Road which backed onto the creek, and that property owners had taken up Melbourne Water grants to improve the banks. “It’s really moving through the community, and we will go to the other side, which is Elamo Road,” Ms Bond said. “It probably will never be complete, but this will be magnificent because the RSL has a long frontage. “The whole idea of this is looking after our waterways looks after the community. If we keep the platypus healthy, we’re better off for it.” Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister said the council was

POLICE are asking for witnesses to come forward, after a driver ripped the front bumper bar off of another car on Healesville’s main street last week. At about 10.50am on Thursday, 1 September, a white utility parked on the Maroondah Highway across from the Coles Walk Shopping Centre, allegedly reversed into a Holden station wagon. Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Tim Stewart said the tow bar of the utility has gone into or under the bumper bar of the station wagon and tore it off when the driver departed. Leading Sen Const Stewart said the driver did not stop and was last seen heading west on the highway. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or taken down the registration plate details of the utility, is asked to call Healesville Police on 5962 4422.

Man charged after fleeing accident A YARRA Junction man will face court after crashing his car into a fence and a tree in Healesville last month, before fleeing the scene of the crash. Yarra Glen police Sergeant Richard Coulson said on 21 August, a car ran off the road on Badger Creek Road in Healesville, hitting a tree and then a fence - the two occupants of the car then fled the scene. Sgt Coulson said the driver was identified as a 27-year-old Yarra Junction man, who was arrested, interviewed, and will be charged on summons for conduct endangering life, leaving the scene of a collision and excessive speed. Sgt Coulson said the car skidded for around 119 metres before the crash.

Costly damages from ashes

Karen Garth, Gary Slater, Maureen Bond, Edmondo Ammendola, Steph Smith, John Tsevelekidis, Fiona McAllister and Kris Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Arrowsmith at the planting. 158433 happy to work with HEWI, the RSL and Melbourne Water on the project. “For me ... I love what’s happening with The Nook - it’s such a significant part of the town’s history and to see it turned into a really beautiful space again through projects like this is fantastic,” she said.

Melbourne Water’s John Tsevelekidis said workers would be targeting blackberries along the Grace Burn during the spring and summer months. Property owners along the Grace Burn who are interested in getting involved with the project are encouraged to call Karen on 5962 5115.

RESIDENTS are being warned to be careful with ashes and logs from fires, with two house fires starting in Healesville last month within half an hour of each other. Yarra Glen police Sergeant Richard Coulson said on 22 August, two house fires were started at properties on Maroondah Highway, Healesville, from fireplace materials reigniting. He said the first house had ashes placed in a receptacle which then melted and caught fire at the back of the house; the second had an unburnt log placed back into wood storage, which caught on fire hours later. “We got these probably 30 minutes apart,” Sgt Coulson said. “It’s a warning for people just to be extremely mindful that, although ashes appear to be out, to ensure they are appropriately disposed of to prevent potential reignition.” He said one of the fires caused about $40,000 in damage to the house.

River future: our lifeblood The state of

affairs Cindy McLeish MP Member for Eildon

THERE is no question the Yarra River is the lifeblood of the Yarra Valley, servicing our local industry and providing the beautiful environment we live in and share. That’s why it is so important that when government makes decisions about the future management and protection of our river, it listens to and actively engages our community. However, the Victorian Government’s recent consultation process with Yarra Valley residents has proven to be nothing else than a sham - ignoring and disrespecting local landowners and their rights in relation to their continued use and enjoyment of this resource. What’s more, the government’s threat that it would effectively ‘lock up’ the river will have major effects on our community’s future security and liveability. The government’s discussion paper Protecting the Yarra makes very little if any real acknowledgment of the significant bushfire risks associated with locking up the river for intensive ecological management. It also makes no reference to the role of emergency services such as our local CFA volunteers - who are an important source of knowledge in dealing with bushfires in our region. The fact that no real comment has been made about bushfire safety in one of the most danger-

:LOOLDP 0DWWKHZV )81(5$/6

ous bushfire zones in the world, evidenced by the presence of two Community Fire Refuges, is downright reckless and dangerous. Locals are justifiably anxious about their safety as a consequence. Aside from important safety concerns, there remain huge question marks over how changes to the management of the river will impact on local businesses and the economic viability of the region. The Yarra River is a drawcard for thousands of tourists every year. Picnics, bike riding and walks along the river are just some of the activities that visitors want to take on in our region. That’s why we need the further development of infrastructure for the further use and enjoyment of our river. If the river is fenced off - there will be no chance of building the infrastructure that future generations will need. It’s not just tourism in the region that will be impacted with agriculture being such an important part of our local economy. With fertile soils and the prized produce being grown locally and sustainably, the government must include local farmers in the discussion about the management of the river - not shut them out. The Andrews Labor Government must realise that the Yarra River is so much more than a public waterway dissecting a city and spilling into the sea. In the Yarra Valley, the river is critical to the health and security of the region. The government should have more respect for our river and the communities that live and work alongside it.

Backyard pizza and beer By Victoria Stone-Meadows THE Yarra Valley Grand Hotel has revamped its backyard and teamed but with the local Hargreaves Hill Brewery to launch the brand new Herb’s Backyard Pizza and Beer. The hotel has been busy over the last few months re-creating a new eating experience and Hargreaves has released a limited edition brew to mark the occasion. Many local patrons turned out on the night of Thursday 1 September for the official opening of Herb’s, named for local figurehead in Yarra Glen, John Herbert. Managing Director of the Grand Hotel Craig Barnett said the pizzas and beer created a top-notch dining experience. “Not to blow our own trumpet or anything, but our pizzas are incredibly delicious and go so well with an ice cold beer. “We decided to collaborate with our friends at Hargreaves Hill Brewery to create a limited edition small batch brew, carefully crafted with our very own custom mix of malt, hops and yeast.” With fresh-made pizzas inspired by local footy teams and people, that can be eaten on-site or ordered for takeaway, Herb’s backyard is set to serve the people of the Yarra Valley.

HEALESVILLE’S Chamber of Commerce has folded, with members voting to wind up the organisation on Wednesday 31 August. A group of nine people, including this journalist, gathered at Healesville’s Fluid Lounge on the Wednesday night for a special general meeting to wind up the chamber, after a committee of eight was unable to be formed at the organisation’s annual general meeting (AGM). Former president Alex Lagerwey and member Brett Whelan ran the meeting, taking a unanimous vote to formally wind up the group and to appoint Mr Lagerwey to close the group and its bank account. Members also voted to disperse the chamber’s remaining funds, $798.50, to a new regional body run by former chamber members, Yarra Valley Business, after costs. “It is with quite a bit of sadness,” Mr Whelan said, pointing out that the small group contained two ex-presidents, ex-treasurers, a vice-president and a founding member of the chamber. “It would seem the model for a township-based chamber is broken, now, with a number of them that are just shutting. “It seems to be a factor that’s just at the main street focus, now that we’re in a global economy and people use their phone to find all sorts of things ... that we need to come together and not look at Yarra Glen, Healesville, Coldstream and Lilydale as competitors, but to look

at us as part of the same product and promote the valley as a whole.” Mr Lagerwey said that Yarra Valley Business, of which he is the secretary and Mr Whelan the chairman, would be a body to advocate for businesses in the region and would launch on 20 October at Rochford Wines. “We’ve done a lot of work this year to get to this point and we really look forward to the launch,” he said. “The concept of township-based chambers has been anchored to the past and business has moved on and spread in the region, and it’s time, I think, for the chamber of commerce model to follow the lead business has already taken and move ... with it.” Mr Lagerwey said there was “nothing stopping” a group of people from forming a new chamber of commerce in the future, but that a committee could not be currently formed. “I’m not aware of any ability to raise eight people to form a committee,” he said. “It has been tried.” He said he had yet to liaise with groups such as Warburton Valley CEDA (Community Economic Development Association), but that the group would not “cut across” them or similar groups. “We want to try and support them as much as anything else,” he said. He said paid-up Healesville Chamber members would have their membership transferred to the new body, and that businesses would be contacted in the lead-up to the launch in October.

Letters Uber tax a pain in the cars THIS new Uber and taxi service tax by Daniel Andrews of $4 on every round trip will really hurt those who can least afford it. (Victorian Premier) Daniel Andrews promised before the election that he wouldn’t introduce any new taxes or levies, but after 18 months he has just announced his third new tax. This $4 per round trip increase will especially hit pensioners, people with a disability and single mums who rely on taxis and Uber to visit the doctor or other essential appointments. Many of the people I talk to in the community don’t have access to public transport, especially those who live in our more rural and semi-rural parts of the Yarra Ranges. A $2 tax on every single passenger fare is unreasonable and unjustified. This new tax means Victorians will pay more for Uber than any other state in the country. Driving up the cost of our taxis and hire cars will only put more pressure on the cost of living for those who can least afford it. Christine Fyffe, Member for Eildon.

Remembering John OTHER than new residents, everyone in Healesville will remember John Finch, if not by name then by sight, as he was the blind man who walked our streets with his beautiful black Labrador guide dog “Winston“ at his side.

Outside the supermarket Winston was in demand for pats and John enjoyed the conversations that came along with them. Some time after first meeting John and patting Winston, we read in the Mountain Views that John and Winston had been attacked in Don Road by a group of youngsters on bikes. John had been punched but Winston was kicked unmercifully and terribly injured. The youngsters rode off leaving John sobbing and furious, and unable to help his friend. Fortunately a lovely lady stopped and helped John to get Winston to the vet. Winston required several operations to repair his broken hips and other injuries and was not able to work again. He was retired to a pet home, leaving John alone, grieving for his constant companion and best friend and unable to get out without his assistance. His loss of mobility made life difficult so John applied for another guide dog and a golden Labrador, “Felton“ came to him and John was happy again. Unforeseen circumstances and a misunderstanding meant that Felton went back to the guide dogs. John’s intention was for boarding but the association mistook it for re-homing and John was alone again. Another dog was assigned and so “Dane“ a two-year-old cream labrador came into his life. It was love at first sight! But, the choice of such a young dog was a disaster in the making. He was too active for John so he asked

us to help by exercising Dane each day while he and Dane got used to each other and for John to regain his confidence. John was out with Dane when an unfortunate incident left John with a badly broken leg. While John was in hospital Dane came to our home. We took him to visit John in hospital and went to their home so that Dane stayed in touch with all things familiar. While John was in hospital someone took it upon themselves to contact the Guide Digs Association to tell them that Dane was not being used for the purpose he was trained for and so they came to our home and took Dane away and re-housed him. John was devastated! These events took an enormous toll on his health and confidence and he went downhill rapidly from then on. He didn’t ever regain his independence and rarely left his home. He constantly fretted about his dogs. Winston will have passed on by now. Hopefully Felton and Dane found loving homes. John was only 73 when he died. Rest well mate. Your true friends will never forget you. Lyn Allen, Healesville.

WE’VE been forewarned for many weeks about the closure of the Walkers Lane Bridge and, therefore, the need to detour from Ryans Road via Christie Parade, Juel Crescent and Glenfern

Road to River Street. However, the sole preparation for this event has been the addition of a pedestrian sign erected in Glenfern Road. Unfortunately, there is nowhere for pedestrians to take refuge from this increased traffic. The Chum Creek bus has been hurtling along these streets for the past week or so and now the tradies are heading down the steep Juel Crescent hill past pedestrians pushing prams without the protection of a footpath. I suggest that a slow-down sign to 20km before the steep descent is essential for pedestrian safety and for motorists to avoid oncoming traffic which is difficult to see due to dense foliage at the sharp corner. This corner could be easily cleared to provide a safe refuge for walkers and cyclists. The approach to the one-lane bridge on Glenfern Road has been well managed in the past by locals who have used a courtesy system of giving way to vehicles coming down the hill from Juel Crescent. Visibility from this direction is often restricted by the darkness of the tree-lined Glenfern Road, and the rising camber of the oncoming bridge. Because there is ample room to pull over and much better visibility on the River Street side, I suggest that a give way sign be erected near the pedestrian sign to give precedence to the oncoming traffic at the bridge. Judy Osbourne, Healesville.

Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 5 September 1936 Cr. Mowle’s Popular Re-election AN air of heavy foreboding pervaded the Healesville Shire Council chamber at 10 o’clock last Monday when a special meeting was scheduled for the election for the Shire president for the ensuing year. Sanctuary Committee CR. Dawborn suggested that the council should elect its own chairman of the sanctuary committee as councillors were responsible to the ratepayers.

Cr. Dawborn thought that the time might come when the Government would be taking over the sanctuary responsibility and the council would then act as an advisory committee. Space to play and get fit By Derek Schlennstedt CONSTRUCTION is underway at Lillydale Lake with the current play space set to receive exciting new features which will appeal to people of all ages and all abilities. The play area is undergoing an improvement in facilities that is looking to make the play space more userfriendly for parents, children, fitness enthusiasts and people with disabilities. The new play space will feature a range of new and exciting play equipment including exercise and fitness equipment, a reeds maze, increased seating, shade and shelters and even a splash pad that will allow users to cool down during the hot summer months. While Lillydale Lake is a popular space to catch Pokemon, it’s also popular with fitness enthusiasts and families who are enjoying a day out. Yarra Ranges Councillor Maria McCarthy said that the project aimed to update the play area and make the space more accessible for the elderly and those with disabilities, as well as making it more engaging for children and adults. “There will be seating there that can suit wheelchairs, there will be opportunities for parents and grandparents to play with their children, so it’s looking to be a really great play area,” Cr McCarthy said. “There is also a new friendship swing, where the parents get to sit on one side of the swing and the child on the other and they can swing together,” she said. Work began in early September and is set to be finished by Christmas. The construction comes following successful advocacy efforts by the Yarra Ranges Council which saw the state government’s growing suburb fund contribute 1 million to the project, in addition to the council’s contribution of $400,000.

Big plastic ‘no’ By Jesse Graham

Maria McCarthy with work on the Lilydale Lake Playground. 158741 Picture: ROB CAREW Council officers undertook extensive consultation work with the community and many local schools helped to create the scope of the project. Some of the suggestions included space which complimented the natural aesthetic around the lake to ensure that it suits the area. “There’s some great element’s which will mimic the environment, there will be an area that looks like the rushes where the birds nest so kids can walk through areas which look like that, it will be a very family friendly, adult friendly space," said Cr McCarthy. This new play space isn’t the only new project with the addition of a new accessible change room for people with significant mobility issues and new storage areas for Canoeing Victoria being built too. The new play space is looking to provide a fantastic space for family time, child play, community interactions and physical health and fitness health opportunities all in the one spot.

HEALESVILLIANS are being urged to ditch plastic bags and make use of reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives, with a group being formed to advocate for a town free of plastic bags. Plastic Bag Free Healesville is a group formed earlier in the year by four residents to advocate for alternatives to single-use plastic bags. Meeting monthly to discuss options, make fabric shopping bags and get the ball rolling on the movement, the group has gained new members and is the latest in a series of Plastic Bag Free groups, including ones formed in Warburton and in the Dandenong Ranges. A group of nine members met with the Mail at Harvest Cafe on Friday 26 August, to talk about their progress, which has seen 212 people like their Facebook page since March. David Johnston said the group not only highlighted the environmental issues that plastic bags caused, but also encouraged people to make sustainable choices in their place. “We’re talking about the whole big picture - it’s not just ‘nasty plastic bags, get rid of them’ - the fact is that people actually like having plastic bags, because they use them as bin liners” he said. “We’ve looked at all the implications of this, and how we can maybe convince people not to need plastic bin liners, and it’s only in its infancy.” He said plastic bags were harmful for the environment, particularly due to their potential to harm native animals, such as platypuses, when they entered waterways. For that reason, and the long association of Healesville with the animal, the group has chosen the platypus as their mascot. Ria Lidgerwood said the group had

Sera Blair, Erin Murphy, David Johnston, Jay Dillon, Ali Griffin, Ria Lidgerwood, Rupert Baker, Doris Pozzi and Rod Hystead are some of the members of Plastic Bag Free Healesville. 158665 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM been in touch with Plastic Bag Free Warburton, which recently launched boomerang bags - bags that people could use in place of plastic bags when they forgot to bring their own re-usable bag and later return them to stores. “They’ve been very supportive and we’ve spoken about how they’ve done it and how we can follow,” Ms Lidgerwood said. She said the big issue was education and changing the habits of people who may unthinkingly get plastic bags when they shop. “It’ll take a while, but this will slowly change people’s habits,” she said. Ali Griffin said a community meeting at Yarra Valley Refreshments in July saw about 15 people attend, and a number of them attend a follow-up meeting in early August.

“I guess we’re at the point of figuring out a timeline of when we could launch the whole campaign, what’s that going to be when we launch it and what sort of bags we need to produce,” she said. Ms Lidgerwood said the group had a bag sewing group in the community meeting room in the Healesville Library every second Tuesday, with attendees encouraged to bring their own sewing machine or to have a cup of tea and talk to the group. She and member Doris Pozzi said residents should keep reusable carry bags in their car, handbag or backpack for use at supermarkets, and to avoid using plastic bags where they could. For more information on the group, search Plastic Bag Free Healesville on Facebook, or email plasticbagfreehealesville@gmail.com.

HEALESVILLE Medical Centre welcomes Dr Fereshteh Naghavizadeh who commenced work at the practice on 10 August. Dr Fereshteh is already familiar to the Yarra Valley, having worked until recently in Woori Yallock. She was born in Iran, where she pursued her education and achieved her Doctorate of Medicine. She then worked for many years as a general practitioner in Iran, where she met her husband, a qualified engineer. In the late 1990s, the family moved to France where they lived for 11 years. In that time, Dr Fereshteh worked in various university hospitals and completed further qualifications in emergency medicine, emergency imaging and clinical nutrition. Her daughter, now 15 years old, was born during their time in France. In 2009, her family moved again, seeking further opportunities in Australia where they have felt warmly welcomed and accepted. In her spare time, Dr Fereshteh enjoys painting, cooking, reading and listening to music. Dr Fereshteh is available for appointment four days per week; Tuesdays through to Fridays and every fourth Saturday morning. She looks forward to serving the people of Healesville and the Yarra Valley as part of the team at Healesville Medical Centre. Healesville Medical Centre is located at 34 Symons Street, Healesville. Connecting with community

Community connections are being encouraged to help support residents. 158827 isation gathering information using a strengths-based approach. This means looking at what they can build on, our community strengths and opportunities. The project focus is to look at what we already have in Healesville - what they could build on, what they could use better, and how they can involve all residents.

It is hoped this will encourage them to find ways they can support each other, including people with a disability. As part of this project, Healesville Connections held a community conversation in August, and will host a second conversation on Thursday, 15 September, 2016. These conversations are guided by Michelle Dunscombe, from Jeder In-

Success of a community conversation depends on as many Healesville residents, services, and businesses members as possible joining in these conversations and sharing knowledge

about Healesville and what each of us has to offer. All are welcome to join the community conversation on 15 September from 5pm to 7pm at the Memo in Healesville. RSVP is important as they have a limit for attendance. Email Healesvilleconnections@ yahoo.com.au or phone Michelle on 0400 578 662.

HEALESVILLE Connections is a newly-formed collective of passionate community and family members and service providers connected with Healesville. They aim to find ways to support Healesville residents to connect with each other; to services, recreation, work and life. The Healesville Connections Project began with a Healesville resident looking to find ways a family member living with a disability could participate in their own community. Healesville is made up of people with numerous skills, talents, abilities and challenges unique to them. Within Healesville, one group that can find it difficult to find a way to belong and participate are adults living with a disability. Healesville Connections is focusing on the ‘whole community’ rather than focusing only on people with disabilities, or focusing on the problems and difficulties within Healesville. This focus is to ensure participation and opportunities for all citizens in Healesville. Hopefully, this will result in less segregation of groups within the town, and people with a disability will not have to leave Healesville to find what they need. The Healesville Connections Project received funding by Yarra Ranges Council to look at the resources, opportunities and barriers for adults with a disability within Healesville. The project is underway and they have engaged Jeder Institute, an organ-

Earthy attractions By Jodie Symonds IT WON’T be an everyday market at the Yarra Valley ECOSS’ Annual Spring Fest, with refugees being the main focus. Held on Sunday 25 September at Yarra Valley ECOSS in Wesburn, the Annual Spring Fest will have an array of activities and interactive attractions to educate visitors about the rising number of environmental refugees. Officer Manager at ECOSS, Chelsea McNab said the inspiration for this year’s theme was personal. “I just asked myself 'what can I do to help with refugee education?'” Ms McNab said. “Look at the Kiribati Island (located in the South Pacific) - it can’t grow any food because of the high salinity and it is only 750 metres wide and four metres above sea level. “It’s slowly sinking and the people need to go somewhere.” She said the event is about educating people

about refugees coming from places like Kiribati. The spring fest will feature speakers including Sister Colleen Jackson, a psychologist who has worked with refugees, specialising in torture. “People think there are only war refugees but that isn’t the case,” Ms McNab said. “It’s something new and you don’t find these at any old market.” She said the event will showcase earth-bag and green furniture school groups had been building. “In Kathmandu last year, the only buildings that survived were the earth bags,” she said. Paper lotus flowers, storytelling by Melbourne storyteller Simon Oates and a geodesic dome are just some of the activities on offer for the kids to enjoy. Tickets cost $5 per person or $10 per family. To help volunteer or for any information, email info@ecoss.org.au.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS THE MOVIE ADULTS ADULTS @KIDS @KIDS PRICES PRICES

HEALESVILLE High School students got together to ‘bend and snap’ at their Legally Blonde the Musical performances last month. After about six months of training, the students and staff performed the musical version of the hit 2001 film from Thursday 25 August to Saturday 27 August. Healesville High School Principal, Allan Rennick, said the musical almost sold out for two of the nights. “It was just brilliant,” Mr Rennick said. “Everybody did an amazing job.” He said director and cast member Trent Morison was a standout in this year’s musical. “He did a fantastic job in training the kids and organising the whole performance,” Mr Rennick said. “Although Trent would say it was the kids that made the show, he was the reason they did such a good show.” Mr Rennick said school productions always create lasting memories for the students. “Shows like this are great memories for the students to have,” he said. “They may not remember what they did in year eight maths, but at least they’ll have the musical to remember.”

Soft serpent embrace Embrace of the Serpent Starring Jan Bijvoet, Nilbio Torres and Miguel Dionisio Ramos Rated M

SUICIDE SQUAD

Students have a blonde moment

EMBRACE of the Serpent is an engrossing, confronting experience with some questionable narrative choices. In 1909, German scientist Theo (Jan Bijvoet) explores the Amazon with shaman Karamakate (Nilbio Torres) in search of a sacred plant that will cure his illness. Shot in moody black and white, this slow but hypnotic film vividly and unflinchingly depicts the brutal, corruptive influence white imperialism

and the voracious rubber industry had on native communities. The film also challenges our preconceived perspectives of its characters, both in our assumption of Theo’s inherent white arrogance and the patronising cultural notion of natives like Karamakate as ’noble savages’. Karamakate is hot-headed and seen to have lost his wisdom in his old age, which he gradually rediscovers in a second journey with an American botanist in 1940. Sadly, Embrace of the Serpent disappoints with its tension and structure. Theo’s illness is barely evident for two-thirds of the

film, and only shows symptoms when dramatically convenient, as a way of punishing Theo for defying local tradition. The film cuts to the 1940 journey very awkwardly, and while it provides engaging character moments for Karamakate and a chilling sequence in a pseudo-Christian cult descended from the orphanage/ monastery in 1909, it does dilute the impact of Theo’s journey. An excellent work of character and atmosphere, Embrace of the Serpent still needed a more focused narrative. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Bloods bite back - hard By Cameron Hutchison HEALESVILLE’S upset win over Wandin highlighted a fantastic round of finals action in AFL Yarra Ranges, with the Bloods getting one over their arch rival. An eight-goal haul from gun forward Ben Monkhurst proved to be a finals performance for the ages as Woori Yallock got the better of their highly fancied opponent, Upwey Tecoma. Meanwhile, in Division 2, Gembrook-Cockatoo have booked themselves a grand final berth, while Yarra Glen’s season is done and dusted, with Yea putting in a sterling performance when it counted. Qualifying Final Division 1 Seniors Healesville 18.16(124) d Wandin 14.15(99) Healesville got off to a fast start, kicking 5.1 to 3.2 in the first to take a lead of 11 points into the second quarter. Luckily for Wandin, the margin was not a lot bigger as Healesville kicked 4.9 in the second to 3.4 to increase their lead to 22 points. Wandin struggled to break through the Healesville backline all day and Healesville’s run and carry and delivery up forward was first class. Another 5.5 to 3.2 had the lead at three-quarter time increase to 37 points. Wandin rallied in the last but just could not get back to back goals to maybe break Healesville’s momentum. Wandin actually outscored Healesville, kicking 5.7 to 4.1. Missed opportunities in the last definitely cost Wandin the game. A meeting with Woori Yallock is up for Wandin next week. Healesville Best: N. Mende (1 goal), J. Nugent (4 goals), D. Anderson (3 goals), N. Aldridge, M. Anson, C. Adams. Wandin Best: B. Harvey (1 goal), J. Myers, R. Ross (1 goal), S. McDonnell. Elimination Final Woori Yallock 16.15(111) d Upwey Tecoma 11.10(76) Woori Yallock enjoyed a big comefrom-behind win to knock Upwey Tecoma out of the finals and book a date against Wandin next week. The first quarter was goal for goal and no one could get the ascendancy. Upwey held a slim 1-point lead heading into the second quarter. Upwey-Tecoma took control in the second, kicking 5.3 to 3.5 and had Woori Yallock worried going into the main break. An 11-point lead was not huge but was an advantage in slippery conditions. Woori Yallock got their game going in the third and completely dominated Upwey kicking 5.2 to 1 behind to turn it around and take a lead of 20 points going into the last. Upwey-Tecoma were running up and down in the same spot and found it hard to find a match up to hold Ben Monkhorst who kicked 8 for the day. Another 4.6 for Woori in the last sealed Upwey’s fate. Woori Yallock Best: B. Monkhorst (8 goals), J. Williams, D. Ryan (1 goal), R. Allen, S. Kennedy, M. Baxter (4 goals). Upwey-Tecoma Best: L. O’Brien, J. Hackett, S. Mitchell (4 goals), K. Townsend-Finlay, S. Parkinson, B. Oates. Division 1 Reserves Qualifying Final Healesville 6.15(51) d Wandin 6.9(45)

The Bloods and Bulldogs players renewed rivalries over the weekend. 158890 Healesville Best: G. Mason (1 goal), L. Oliver, D. Senior, C. Barclay (1 goal), T. Tweedie, J. Shaw (1 goal). Elimination Final Belgrave 53 d Warburton Millgrove 33 Belgrave Best: Jennifer Dewhurst, Lauren Bennett (43 goals), Angela Jeffery. Warburton Millgrove Best: Alice McKenna (20 goals), Kellie Davidson, Bridget Nix. Semi-Final 2 Division 2 Seniors Gembrook-Cockatoo 11.8(74) d Kinglake 8.15(63) Gembrook has booked themselves into the 2016 Division 2 grand final after an 11-point win over Kinglake. Gembrook took the early lead by a

mere 2 points at quarter time. Kinglake fought back in the second, kicking 2.5 to 1.3 to turn it around and go into the half-time break with a 6-point lead. Things were all tied up after the third quarter, but Kinglake could have had it in the bag if they had kicked straight. A 1.7 to 3.1 scoreline was going to haunt them. Gembrook’s accuracy was the thing that got them over the line in the end, kicking 4.1 to 1.2 in the last. Gembrook-Cockatoo Best: L. Scott, C, Vernal, R. Wilson, E. Tomlin, D. Scott, S. Martin. Kinglake Best: S. McMahon, A. McLaren, C. Arnott, J. Crowe, J. Butterworth, J. Mende. Semi-Final 1 Yea 15.14(104) d Yarra Glen 13.14(92) Yea have outplayed Yarra Glen to keep their finals campaign alive and a chance to play in a grand final when they take on Kinglake next week. Yarra Glen’s finals campaign has come to a screaming halt. Yea took control early, kicking 5.2 to 3.2 in the first and a 12-point lead. Yea extended their lead to 19 points at half-time and Yarra Glen would have gone into the halftime break wondering where their drive was going to come from. Yarra Glen outscored Yea in the third, kicking 3.4 to 2.3 and reduced the margin to 11 points at three-quarter time. Yarra Glen would have given themselves a real chance and it was game on. Yarra Glen started with a rush and had early chances but indirect kicking and pressure from Yea put the end to the 2016 season for Yarra Glen. Both teams kicked 3 goals and the final result was yea by 12 points.

Haiyan on home straight By Andrew Copley

Haiyan (8) won his Healesville Cup heat last Sunday. 158858 Haiyan with trainer, Tanju Salih. 158858 “I had always had an interest in greyhound racing as a punter and then bought my first greyhound, which was Miss Elegant. “One day her trainer said he didn’t want to train her anymore, so I decided to get my trainer’s licence and I haven’t looked back. “She raced four times for me and won her last two races, which was a huge thrill. Then she came on season so we retired her.” Salih said that training greyhounds has helped fill a massive void in his life. “I’m a pretty competitive person and I played local footy for many years at Oakleigh (Under 19s), then at the Sandown footy club and then at Doncaster East before returning to Sandown,” he said.

“I retired in my mid 30s and I really needed a hobby. “I couldn’t go and watch local footy as I am so passionate and always wanted to go out and play, so I really needed something else to fulfil my competitive streak,” he said. Salih said he thrives on the challenge that training greyhounds presents. “I see a lot of similarities between preparing to play football and preparing a greyhound to race,” he said. “For instance, I’ll take my dogs to the beach as part of their recovery, just as a lot of footballers go to the beach the day after a game. “After every race I take my dogs to a greyhound chiropractor who lives all the way in Traralgon, which is an hour

and a half from home. “So it’s a big commitment but training greyhounds is something I take very seriously, just as I used to take my footy seriously when I was playing. “I’m lucky that work allows me to do that. I work in a casual role, three or four days a week for an agency. Having that flexibility allows me to train my greyhounds.” Haiyan will be the least experienced greyhound in Sunday’s Healesville Cup, but Salih refuses to write off his chances, even though he is drawn awkwardly in box four. “He weighs 36 kilograms and is a really big, physically strong greyhound,” he said. “He overcame a little bit of interference to win his heat, but if he can somehow get a clear run in the final then who knows what he can do? “I’m just rapt to be part of it all.

Big names firing at Woods Point By John Wood CLOUDY and cool conditions that turned into a fine and sunny afternoon saw a good roll-up for the Woods Point Gun Club’s Maori Creek Championships. Club Members Ken and Ann Skinner, parents of Australia’s Rio Olympics shooting gold medal winner, Catherine Skinner, were welcomed and imparted many tales of Catherine’s Olympic experience and success. The eye-opener resulted in cash wins for Don Rhodes in AA Grade, Ian Findlay in A Grade with John Wood, Peter West and Chuck Lay in B Grade. Ron Press and Peter Lang shared the C Grade money. The first championship was a 20 target Continental Handicap featuring clay targets that as well as moving from side to side also moved up and down when thrown. Good fun, but difficult. Marty McLachlan posted the best score of 19/20 to take the event and the sash followed by Ron Press with an excellent 18/20 for second place. Six shooters tied for the minor placings: Chuck Lay, Daryl Ewert, Rob Bevis, Chris Petersen, Josh Cleeland and David Frazer that resulted in Bevis taking third 21/24 and Lay taking fourth, 20/24 after a short shoot off. The main event was 25 pair Deauville Doubles. Two targets presented at the same time to teams of two shooters, two shots per shooter allowed. Both targets had to be broken for a score to count. There were some strong performances with Ken Skinner and Josh Cleeland returning 24/25 as did the team of Mick Ward and Phillip Desmond who managed to miss the last

“It’s scary, but I’m not nervous, I’m just really excited and I feel like I’ve got nothing to lose. “I’ll probably be nervous on the day though. I played footy for 18 years before I played in my first grand final, which was when I was in my thirties and playing for Doncaster East. “We won that game, so hopefully I can win the first group race I compete in as well.” The Healesville Cup will be held on Sunday, 11 September, noon until 4pm, at the Healesville Sporting Complex, Don Road, Healesville. Cost is $6 Adult, $4 Concession and children free. There will be a Children’s Carnival and live music on the green. The Healesville greyhound racetrack is located just two minutes from the town centre. More information at healesville. grv.org.au.

Tough conditions at Warburton WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY ON a day where a severe storm sent many in the field scurrying for the safety of the clubhouse, some hardy souls and bright sparks (who hit-off early) completed the round of Stableford. The winner of this reduced field was Craig Brown, with an excellent 36 points in challenging conditions! Runner-up was Ken Barratt with 34 points. The balls went down as far as 31, showing how difficult scoring was. The NTPs went to Craig Brown (9th), Ralph Logan (12th) and P.K. (17th). SATURDAY The Stroke and Monthly Medal winner for the day was new member, John Blanche, with an impressive nett 68, but he didn’t have it all his own way. In a very tight finish, John won on a countback from runner-up, David Hatt, and Craig Brown also recorded a 68 (and the countback was very tight in itself). The ball rundown extended to 73. The NTP. daily winners were Hatty (3rd), Allan Hubbard (9th), Jye Furness (12th) and Roger Salmon (15th).

Woori Yallock Junior Football Club Pictured, from left, are Trevor Ewert, Marty McLachlan, Peter West (sponsor), Rob Bevis, Mick Ward (sponsor) and Lachie Ewert, front. 158646 of the 25th pair of targets to score 24/25 also. But Trevor Ewert and Rob Bevis had the last laugh with a perfect 25/25 to take the Championship. After a 5 pair shoot-off, Ward/ Desmond won the second place prizes, 29/30, with Skinner/Cleeland third, 28/30. Ian Findlay and Daryl Ewert won fourth place outright with 23/25. To finish, there was a 15 target Silent Rise Championship where the shooter stood at their mark with gun ready but did not call, instead the target was released after a vari-

able delay. Difficult as in a standard events the target is released immediately on the shooter’s call. Findlay, Trevor Ewert, Bevis, Dave Hoon and Skinner all managed perfect 15/15s to go into a shoot off. Ewert took the sash 25/25 from Findlay 14/25, Bevis third, 18/19, Hoon fourth, 17/19. Daryl Ewert shot a good 14/15 but it was not enough to get near the winner dais. Upper Yarra shooter, Rob Bevis, after some excellent shooting, added another High Gun sash to his list with a final score of 57/60, two tar-

gets clear of Trevor Ewert’s, 55/60. Our sponsors for the day were Peter and Ellen West and Mick Ward. Thank you for your support. Anne Skinner ensured that we were all fed royally and Trevor Ewert’s Bushies Bakery pies and other goodies were again damn tasty. The next shoot is the King of the Mountain Championships on Sunday, 25 September, at 10.30am. Everyone is welcome to pop in and see what clay target shooting is about.

THERE is plenty of excitement surrounding a young greyhound named Haiyan ahead of Sunday’s Group 2 Healesville Cup, because he is a greyhound that locals have adopted as their own. Haiyan has only raced seven times - all at Healesville - where he has won five times including an impressive victory in a heat of the Healesville Cup last Sunday. It is rare for a greyhound to make a group race final so early on in his career and it is a huge feather in the cap of his trainer Tanju Salih, who is now preparing for the biggest race of his life. Salih lives in Springvale, almost an hour from Healesville, yet few greyhound trainers have frequented the Yarra Valley more in recent months. “I only train two greyhounds and they are both better suited to racing up the straight than on traditional circle tracks, so it is great to have Healesville fairly close by as it is Victoria’s only straight track for greyhounds. I’ve been here so often that it’s become my home away from home,” he said. Boasting $67,000 in prizemoney - including a $47,000 first prize, the Healesville Cup is Victoria’s richest straight greyhound race. “To have a finalist in the Healesville Cup is a dream come true, and it’s something I never really imagined myself achieving,” he said. Salih, 46, took up training greyhounds five years ago with Haiyan’s mother, Miss Elegant.

Motoring Colorado makes its debut THE new 2017 Holden Colorado recently made its public debut at ANZ stadium in the final game of the 2016 State of Origin series. The redesigned Colorado is introduced with fresh styling, an extended range of accessories and a raft of hightech additions from advanced connectivity to active safety features. Holden’s Executive Director Sales, Peter Keley, says the redesigned Colorado is a key vehicle in Holden’s future product portfolio and its progressive new styling, improved driveability and leading technology content are sure to be a hit with customers. “Colorado has resonated well with customers in a segment that has almost doubled in sales in the last 10 years, and we’re confident the new 2017 Colorado will build on this and redefine customer expectations of what a truck can be,” Mr Keley said. “Not only does it come with fresh new styling, it also offers car-like refinement, ride and handling as well as vehicle technologies unique to this segment including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. “Colorado is also the only vehicle in the 4x4 utility vehicle segment to offer remote window activation - a feature we expect to be popular with customers in hot climate parts of Australia.” The 2017 Colorado retains the same assured off-road capability of its predecessor, but adds impressive on-road

The 2017 version adds impressive on-road refinement and a go-anywhere spirit. 158826 refinement and a go-anywhere spirit driven by advanced technology. Colorado’s technology offering also provides notable safety enhancements, including a new forward facing camera with active safety features such as Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. For low speed manoeuvres, drivers are assisted by front and rear park assist on selected vehicles and a rear view camera across the range. Inside its slick new interior, Colorado boasts a new Holden MyLink

infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity delivered through a colour touchscreen housed in the vehicle’s centre stack. When coupled with Digital (DAB+) radio, embedded satellite navigation and voice recognition, Colorado’s infotainment offering stands second to none. The new range of Colorado Genuine Accessories represents the largest vehicle line accessory range Holden has ever produced, further enhancing Colorado’s new design and practicality.

The redesigned Colorado has fresh styling, with an extended range of accessories. 158826 Holden Engineering Manager - Accessories, Joseph Basile, said the extended range of accessories available on the 2017 Colorado was directly inspired by the Colorado Xtreme show truck and would better allow customers to tailor their vehicle to their specific lifestyle. “When we revealed the Colorado Xtreme show truck back in March, we received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and that has driven us to make sure we included as many of the concept accessories as we could, into the fi-

nal Colorado program,” Mr Basile said. “In the coming months, the 2017 Colorado will deliver a plethora of allnew accessories to its range including a safari bar, fender flares, LED driving lights, 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tyres, so we’re confident there’s something for everybody.” With a striking new design, range of high-tech features and refined driving manners from the talented Holden engineers, the 2017 Colorado will be available at Holden dealers nationwide from 01 September 2016.
