Noosa is low on old favourites top 50 list and only three regions from WA are listed.
CORELOGIC RP Data has released the latest statistics looking at council regions with the highest population of retirees and, surprisingly, neither Noosa nor the Sunshine Coast makes the list.
Victor Harbor, located about 80km south of Adelaide, had the highest proportion of residents aged 65 years of age or older. More than one in three local residents in Victor Harbor (37.9 per cent) were at least 65 years of age.
According to the data, none of the top 50 council regions with the highest proportion of persons aged 65 and older was situated within a capital city area.
Queenscliffe, adjacent to Geelong in Victoria, has the nation’s second highest proportion of residents aged 65 years of age or older at 35.3 per cent.
CoreLogic RP Data’s Cameron Kusher said given this, the regions listed are typically either coastal or regional townships.
Mr Kusher said the insight highlighted within the data is valuable, particularly for local governments.
“Interestingly, very few of these council areas have a large overall population; only seven of the 50 listed council areas had a total population of more than 20,000 persons,” he said. “Areas that many people think of as retirement hotspots such as the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Cairns and the Surf Coast of Victoria do not appear on the list indicating that these areas have become much more than just locations for retirees.”
