Harry helping mum make a very special appeal for charity Lara’s Eileen Booth was never one to ask for help - until son Harry’s lifethreatening illness. The three-year-old struggles with chronic renal failure that is gradually destroying his kidney function. It makes him nauseous every day, constantly itchy and means he has to be fed through a tube. Now he’s also on the list for a kidney transplant. Like any parents of seriously ill children, the pressure piled up on Eileen and husband Trevor. Then they discovered Very Special Kids. The charity provided the couple with invaluable emotional support and trained volunteers to help with Harry’s hospital visits, Eileen said. She’s particularly grateful for the assistance of its local family support practitioner Peggy Noonan.

A Bell Post Hill dad is leading a group of fedup residents in a bid to battle crime in Geelong’s northern suburbs. Nick Cross, 29, has coordinated overnight car patrols for the past two months, catching out burglars and car thieves plaguing the area. “The police aren’t patrolling anywhere so we just do it ourselves, he said.

“They just don’t have the numbers. The father-of-three said he had spotted would-be-offenders loitering in driveways or tampering with cars on the patrols. “We light them up with a torch and most run. Mr Cross also coordinates a Facebook page where residents share CCTV, dash-cam and mobile footage and other information. “If they need any help they can let the rest of us know. Mr Cross denied allegations among “hat-

Indy earns national award for online community news The Geelong Indy has won Best Digital Publishing at Australia’s premier awards for community newspapers. The family-owned paper overcame other finalists from Melbourne and Adelaide to win the coveted award for online community news. The Indy was also a finalist in Best Advertising Feature, for We Are Geelong, and Best Special Publication, for Geelong Coast Kids, at the an-

nual Community Newspapers of Australia (CNA) southern division awards last Friday. Indy managing editor Tony Galpin was rapt with the paper’s success. “The digital publishing award is particularly important given the demand for online local news,” he said. “We’re thrilled the judges rewarded our efforts in breaking stories and reaching locals who pre-

fer their news online. It’s also good for Geelong to have an online community news outlet that’s recognised for providing a great local service.” The Indy’s digital platforms include an active news website, a free e-paper and social media accounts that alert followers to new posts and breaking stories. “The Indy’s now the full package of print and digital,” Mr Galpin said.

Murder guilt A Lara man has pleaded guilty to murdering a friend’s mother in her Hoppers Crossing home. Sigaragh Baea, 21, appeared yesterday in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court over the death of Prasad Somawansa, who died minutes after her husband and son left the home on a night in February.

Inquiry slug Implementing the directions of a state Commission of Inquiry into Geelong’s council will cost at least $1.5 million, City Hall has revealed. The figure would cover development of a 30-year vision for Geelong, implementation of staff and regulatory programs and reinstatement of the City’s newsletter to ratepayers, said administrators chair Dr Kathy Alexander.

Jokers heist A man who cashed in coins from another players’ gaming machine at Geelong’s Jokers could be the loser if police catch up with him. Police have released an image of a man (pictured) who they wanted to interview over the incident on 31 July, describing him as in his 20s with a medium build and brown hair.

Festival sinks PANSY DIVISION: City Hall parks staff Stephanie Marsal and Luke Walsh add a splash of spring colour to Malop Street this week. The City planted 3000 pansies between Moorabool and Yarra streets to replace the strip’s winter stock of kale which has since been composted.

City to re-join committee for $20,000 seat at table

“Unexpected challenges” have forced the cancellation of an inaugural Geelong Boating Festival, according to organisers. They hoped to reschedule the event from October to 2017 after encountering “resources, timing and availability issues”.

MP improving Geelong MP John Eren is recovering after a heart attack in Geelong’s pubic hospital on the weekend. The Lara MP and Victorian Sports and Tourism Minister had a stent inserted into an artery and doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

City Hall will pay $20,000 to re-join lobby group Committee for Geelong after the previous council refused to renew its membership. Chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller confirmed in a statement to the Indy on Thursday that the City would “be taking up membership”. Mr Spillier said the decision “makes sense ... to enable collaborative working relationships with local stakeholders”. “A Committee for Geelong membership will allow us to be at the table as a full partner.” Mr Spiller said the decision to apply for membership was his own. He confirmed the cost would be $20,000. The statement failed to outline the decision process, such as whether a recommendation to

re-join went to council’s three administrators for approval. One of the three, Peter Dorling, was executive director of the committee for almost 12 years before taking up a position with Avalon Airport. The previous council, sacked in April, quit its 12-year membership in 2013. Then deputy mayor Bruce Harwood cited a “shift in direction” between the two organisations. But other councillors were more strident, slamming the committee for interfering in council activities and continually criticising its decisions. Then councillor Jan Farrell said at the time she was “disgusted” with the committee’s interference in Geelong’s direct mayoral election.

Colleague Kylie Fisher accused the committee of “confusing” the Federal Government about Geelong’s funding priorities and of “getting up to shenanigans” in Canberra. Mr Harwood was reluctant to comment on the new membership when the Indy contacted him. “It’s a decision for the times and so be it,” he said. Mr Harwood declined to make further comment. The committee describes itself as “an independent, member-based organisation committed to leading and influencing to achieve our strategic objectives for Geelong”.

Soft roadsides after a wet winter have left Geelong’s council “racing against the clock” to slash grass before the summer fire season, according to city services general manager Vicki Shelton. Slashing was restricted to parks and reserves until October despite the “heavy grass growth and potentially high fire risk over summer”, she said.

Double Take A bad omen or just bad timing? Whatever it was, City Hall could possibly have chosen a better time to release a statement about recent “cat neutering” - right on the eve of Geelong’s qualifying finals clash with arch rival Hawthorn. Cats fans will certainly hope the unkindest cut was restricted to the feline variety. After all, there’s a certain piece of anatomy that’s essential when facing the hard men of the Hawks… While on the cat snip snippet, casual readers of the statement might have been left wondering how they’re despatching unwanted kitties down the local pound. “The explosion of kittens over the summer period puts enormous pressure on our local pound,” the City’s Steve Sodomaco graphically explained. And a fair bit of pressure on the cats as well. Steve went on to explain that the explosions result in the “euthanasia of unwanted and stray cats”. Well, obviously.

Another statement, this one from the State Government, also caught the eye this week. ‘Primary students take over parliamentary debate’, its headline proclaimed. Voters can only assume the pollies finally graduated! But it’s not all neutered footballers, exploding cats and kids in cabinet - Geelong now has yet another body charged with prioritising projects for funding. The Andrews government has appointed more than a dozen representatives to its new Barwon Regional Partnership to advise on priorities in the municipalities of greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Colac Otway and Queenscliffe. But, wait, isn’t that job pretty much already covered by numerous local bodies including councils alliance body, G21? Er, not exactly, says G21 chief Elaine Carbines, who has a seat on the regional partnership committee as well. Apparently the difference is that G21 also covers Golden Plains Shire, she explains. Phew, that’s a relief - duplication avoided!

From page 1 Mr Cross said he had made a citizen’s arrest after receiving a tip-off on the Facebook page. Mr Cross and others chased a 14-year-old who had just burgled a nearby house, finding him hiding in a bush. They took him to Mr Cross’s garage where they waited for police, he said. “Not a hand was laid on him. “I was sitting here for about 45 minutes saying, ‘What are you doing mate? You should be playing sport not robbing people’.” Two officers who arrived to arrest the youth praised the group as long as it avoided violence or targeting people, Mr Cross said. He had seen at least 60 burnt-out, crashed or

dumped cars since the patrols began, including 24 in one weekend. Mr Cross and a friend were now using VicRoads records to identify “suspcious“ vehicles with dodgy number plates, he said. Geelong Acting Inspector Monique Leffanue rejected Mr Cross’s claims of a police patrol shortage. “Police are out there patrolling the streets on a 24/7 basis.” Act Insp Leffanue said Mr Cross had not been in contact with police. “But we’re aware of his activities.” Act Insp Leffanue backed Neighbouhood Watch groups but discouraged “members of the community taking the law into their own hands”. “We urge them to call triple zero or report the matter to Crime Stoppers.”

‘Horror’ with kids cancer plight drives charity ride By Luke Voogt Richard Hamilton’s cycling quest to help sick children began after his own harrowing experience with cancer. The Geelong West business consultant’s mother died from breast cancer in 2004 after battling the disease since the 1980s. “She went through a pretty gruelling process with chemotherapy,” Richard said. But as bad as that was, he said, it was his firsthand glimpse into childhood cancer at the hospital which horrified him. “I used to take her in for her chemo sessions and I’d see all these kids sitting in the corridor.” “You’d go into this place and there’d be kids looking yellow with no hair on their heads. I thought ‘my god they’re just kids’.” Richard, 52, will take part in the Great Cycle Challenge next month to support childhood cancer research. “To see a four or five-year-old kid looking sickly is a terrible thing,” he said. “They deserve a chance at life.” The father of four has raised $890 of his $1000 goal. “I might bump it up to $1500 or $2000 if I’m doing well,” he said. It’s not Richard’s first time cycling for the challenge; he has raised $5700 for it since 2013, he said. Friends and family have again got behind him, along with a number of his professional contacts. “Businesses I have worked with in the past have been pretty good,” he said. “This year they’ve donated the majority of it.” Richard will ride 500km for the challenge, much of which will be on Bellarine Rail Trail, he said. He also plans to pack a tent and sleeping bag for a few long rides to Victoria’s more scenic holiday spots. “I’ll bring my wife along as well,” he said. “We’ll get about four free holidays - it’s not a bad deal is it?” Richard has cycled for most of his life but it wasn’t until about a decade ago that he “got into it a bit more seriously”. A food outlet was running a promotion for a mountain bike and Richard managed to get his hands on one. He rode the mountain bike until “it tanked” and bought a “proper” bike to replace it.

Mum’s big appeal From page 1 The Torquay resident’s outreach services include counselling and advocacy along with coordination of programs and events for clients to meet other families in similar situations. Now Eileen’s glad she reached out to Very Special Kids. “Initially it was really hard for me as I find it hard accepting help,” she said. “But Peggy helped me break down these barriers and know that it’s OK to ask for support. “She’s been amazing.” Eileen also accesses Very Special Kids’ other support services for families of children with lifethreatening conditions. “I attend Very Special Kids coffee mornings with other transplant waitlist mothers. It’s important to debrief with other families in a similar situation,” Eileen said. “I can’t speak highly enough of this support.” Very Special Kids supports 82 families in the Barwon region and more than 900 across Victoria. It also provides 24-hour nursing care at Victoria’s only children’s hospice. The charity relies on community help to continue its services, said chief Michael Wasley. “Each year it costs over $7 million to operate Very Special Kids. Without donations from our community we would not be able to continue caring for these brave families.” Very Special Kids has launched its annual Piggy Bank Appeal which will be visiting Geelong and Torquay this weekend. The appeal sends giant mobile piggy banks around the state to seek $1 million in donations. The appeal will be at Torquay’s Bunnings store 9am to 4pm on Saturday 10 September and at Corio’s Gateway Hotel from 11.30am to 3pm on Sunday. The appeal will return to Torquay, in Gilbert Street, from 10am to 2pm on 29 September. Online donations are accepted at piggybankappeal.org.au

Kinders ‘merger’

RIDE ON: Richard Hamilton will cycle 500km next month to raise money for child cancer research. 159047 About eight years ago Richard began riding in Around the Bay joining 15,000 people raising money for homeless children. He’ll ride in Great Cycling Challenge with more than 7900 participants, who have raised $550,000 out of the event’s $3m goal.

Participants nominate a distance to ride during October and a fundraising goal, and will use their mobiles to track their cycling. Richard said people could support him by visiting www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/ RichardHamilton.

One of Geelong’s biggest welfare agencies will merge with the city’s peak kindergarten body. Bethany Community Support and Geelong Kindergarten Association (GKA) will operate as one organisation from early 2017, they announced this week. GKA would operate with a new brand under the existing Bethany organisational structure, said GKA’s managing director Tina Martin. The merger decision followed “extensive consultation sessions” with GKA kindergarten committees and the Department of Education and Training, she said. “The positive response to the original proposal has been overwhelming.”

Families struggling with autism will have a chance to be heard during a public hearing in Geelong this month, state MP Christine Couzens has announced. A hearing of a parliamentary inquiry into services for autistic people would visit the city on 19 September, said the Geelong MP. “This is an important inquiry that will investigate the availability and adequacy of services provided by the Commonwealth, state and local governments across health, education, disability, housing, sport and employment services. “This allows people in the Geelong region to have their say.” City Hall would host the public hearing from 1pm, Ms Couzens said. City Hall and parents of autistic people would present “evidence” while autism sufferers, re-

searchers and peak-body representatives would offer “views”. Others could “have a say and tell their story” after formalities concluded at 4pm, Ms Couzens said. The hearing committee, which includes Ms Couzens, will also conduct sessions in Melbourne and other regional centres across Victoria. Ms Couzens said anyone wanting to participate in thee Geelong hearings could register by phoning 8682 2842 or emailing fcdc@parliament. vic.gov.au. A hearing schedule and more information was available at parliament.vic.gov.au/fcdc, she said. Geelong has one of Australia’s highest rates of autism with estimates of up to one in 25 residents suffering the condition in some parts of the city.

This company exceeded all my expectations in commitment to service excellence. From the first inquiry made, nothing was too hard or a problem, they tailored their service to meet all our requirements, right through to delivery. They worked solidly and with enthusiasm and the upmost respect for our personal property. They even had a supply of bolts to replace the ones I misplaced in transit to erect out bed. Outstanding in service, engagement. Price and outcome. Highly recommended to anyone looking to move. Tammy & Stephen.

An unknown man who harassed a woman now has her name and address after stealing her licence, according to Geelong police. Investigators released an image of a man they wanted to question over the incident, which began in a similar fashion to recent car-jackings which have been linked with Melbourne’s notorious Apex Gang. The woman was driving along High Street, Belmont, on Sunday when the wanted man asked for her phone number while driving alongside, police posted on Facebook. The victim ignored him but he followed her to the corner of Geelong Bypass’s Anakie Road exit where he “nudged” her vehicle. “At this scene the male snatched the victim’s driver’s licence from her then drove off,” police posted. The man was driving a gold Holden Captiva with false number plates. Police asked anyone who might know his identity to phone Senior Constable Joseph Anderson at the Geelong station on 5225 3100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

I just wanted to thank you for a pleasant and easy move last Wednesday from Bell Park to Bannockburn. Nathan and Danny were professional and efficient every step of the way. They even went above and beyond by emptying a rubbish bin which we forgot about with no fuss. I would definately choose Geelong Removals if I ever moved again and I have no hesitations in recommending you to friends and family. Thank you Alison.

Our robot targets deadlier soldiers By Luke Voogt

NEW LOOK: Barwon Water is looking at building public parklands at its heritage-listed ovoid sewer aqueduct in Breakwater. 140245

Park option for aqueduct By Luke Voogt Parklands could fringe Geelong’s heritage-listed sewer aqueduct at Breakwater, according to Barwon Health. Strategy and planning general manager Carl Bicknell said Barwon Water recently began investigating options for the site. Residents would be able to have their say on the fate of the aqueduct and surrounding land, he said. “No firm decisions will be made on options for the aqueduct and a possible river park without public consultation.” The concrete aqueduct structure had long been in poor condition, Mr Bicknell said.

Despite attempted repairs, authorities had prohibited access under the structure since 1995 due to the risk of falling concrete. “For many years Barwon Water has been investigating options for improving public access to the riverside land,” Mr Bicknell said. “Our aim is to preserve as much of the existing structure as possible while still allowing safe passage along the river under the aqueduct. “There’s also the issue of funding the necessary stabilisation works for the structure and on-going management costs.” Geelong Environment Council president Joan Lindros said she looked forward to seeing plans for the aqueduct. “It’s a great opportunity for anothe Barwon

River parkland.” The 756-metre long aqueduct was decommissioned in 1992 when a new sewer pipe was constructed under the river. The aqueduct carried Geelong’s first main outfall sewer pipe across the Barwon River to reach Bass Strait since 1916. Barwon Water purchased the 65-hectare floodplain on the north side of the river in 1993 after the then-Geelong Regional Commission put it on the market. After acquiring the land Barwon Water excluded grazing from most of the site to re-establish native vegetation. Grazing on the site ceased entirely about a decade ago.

New Geelong technology could make Australian soldiers more deadly thanks to a new partnership with a high-tech engineering firm. OzBot Raider, the “world-first robotics-driven” target, would add realism to shooting practice, said Deakin's Dr Mick Fielding. “Existing targets are either static or move along short lengths of pre-installed track,” the robotics expert said. “These systems are costly and timeconsuming to relocate, meaning the location and behaviour of test targets becomes familiar.” But OzBot Raider could be used in practically any location with minimal infrastructure, Dr Fielding said. The unmanned target could be set up within an hour to move in any direction rather than predictable paths, he explained “(It’s) a cable guided system, allowing its path to be defined simply by setting the guide cable between any two points.” The system combined with the target’s top speed of 40km/h to enhance training of soldiers for unexpected scenarios, Dr Fielding said. Deakin’s Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) displayed OzBot this week at Australia’s Land Forces 2016 defence exhibition show in Adelaide. The research engineers behind the system will present it to the Australian Army next month. IISRI director Professor Saeid Nahavandi said the system could provide job opportunities at local suppliers and fabricators, with the potential to export OzBot to allied countries. BULLS-EYE: Deakin's new target system could make Australian soldiers more deadly.

Book lifts the lid on locals’ sheds By Luke Voogt Three Geelong men united by their love of racing have appeared in a photographic book celebrating Australian sheds. Craig Wetjen’s Men and Their Sheds came out last month and prominently featured locals Barry Ward, Bill Evans and Alan Hudson. For the last few years the trio have met in Barry’s Newtown shed, known as The Motor Shed, to rebuild and modify cars. “We just got together and mucked around with our racing cars,” Barry said. “It was a great place for few years.” A pastry chef by trade, Barry was a veteran of Australia’s Formula Two racing circuit. “It’s a smaller version of a Formula One,” Barry said. “I always wanted to race cars, so that’s what I did.” The Queenscliff grandfather left the circuit in 1992 and began importing motors, gearboxes and historical cars to rebuild. He purchased The Motor Shed in 2003. “I’ve got to keep busy,” he said. “Retirement’s not the word for me.” A decade later, Barry started to invite friends to his Newtown shed to help out as well as work on their own projects. “That’s all we’ve been doing for the last three or four years,” he said. One of these men is 75-year-old mechanic Bill Evans, who met Barry in 1971 after working on one of his cars. “I built his first engine for him when raced a Ford Escort twin-cam,” he said. Bill moved to Leopold four years ago, only to find out he had lung cancer, which eventually resulted in him losing a lung. “It hasn’t stopped me from doing things,” he said. “It’s slowed me down quite a touch, though.” Bill was a racer himself, competing in a Datsun 1200 in Armstrong 500 Class A in Bathurst in

PASSION: Alan Hudson, Barry Ward and Bill Evans at The Motor Shed. 1972, 1973 and 1976. “They used to call me Wild Bill, now they call me Mild Bill,” he said. Back in the ’60s and ’70s Bill said there were no co-drivers and much less protection on the track. “Not that you were going as fast as V8 supercars but you were going as fast as you could.” Bill said the shed had been something extra to look forward to each day and that he was a big advocate of men’s sheds.

“It’s a bit of exercise, and exercise for the brain, rather than sitting on the couch all day and watching television.” The two men were joined in the book by retired panel beater Alan Hudson who had an MG that he wanted to restore. “My friend Barry kindly suggested I could use his workshop to work on it at my leisure,” he said in the book. “As his workshop is so well equipped I took

him up on the offer.” Unfortunately for the trio, Barry sold the shed in August at about the same time the book came out. But that hasn’t stopped them from meeting in each other’s garages to work on their automotive passion, Bill said. “Together we talk and solve the problems of the world - not that anything actually happens it’s just heaps of fun.”

Fine time for our high-tech sheriff Numberplate recognition technology has caught 19 people wanted on 149 warrants at Mt Duneed, according to the Department of Justice and Regulation. The outstanding warrants carried fines of more than $56,000, the department said. “Uniformed officers from the Barwon South West region undertook the targeted blitz as part of a focus on enforcing outstanding debts with tough sanctions and penalties.” The officers conducted the blitz on Anglesea Road on Friday 2 September. “Automatic numberplate recognition technology was used to identify offenders. Payment was received from 12 people on the day to finalise 47 warrants worth more than $23,500. Six drivers with 45 warrants for fines of more than $17,100 were notified that their driver licence or vehicle registration would be suspended if they did not arrange to pay within seven days.” Sheriff of Victoria Brendan Facey said his of-

fice ran similar operations daily across the state in a bid to stamp out fine evasion and highlight the “serious consequences” of failing to pay fines. He warned of more blitzes to come. “Sheriff ’s officers will continue to conduct special operations, roadblocks and blitzes, while increasingly using automatic numberplate recognition technology to more efficiently target fine dodgers on Victorian roads,” Mr Facey said. “The Sheriff could be anywhere at any time and with new technology and more collaborative operations with Victoria Police - it’s only a matter of time before you get caught.” The department said anyone with concerns about their outstanding fines should call 1300 SHERIFF to discuss available options. “Individuals can pay their outstanding fines at the fines.vic.gov.au website or by visiting any of the justice service centres in the region.”

future for revamped kinder Aviation supply centre fuels growth ‘Brighter’ By Luke Voogt A new aviation fuel supply centre will create 14 jobs on Geelong's doorstep, according to Golden Plains mayor Des Phelan. The supply centre at Lethbridge Airport would also keep aerial firefighters and air ambulances aloft during emergencies he said. The facility officially opened this week with four self-bunded 18,500 litre tanks to make Avgas, Mogas and Jet A1 fuel available all day yearround. The project would support the aviation community and local economy as well, Cr Phelan said. “Lethbridge Airport is rapidly expanding,

creating further demand for improved access to fuel. “Modelling indicates that fuel uplifting would have a total economic impact of $4.4 million per annum, with at least 14 new jobs by 2021, which is just fantastic. “This is a huge win for both Lethbridge Airport and for the wider region. Council would like to thank the Federal Government for their support in this important project.” Golden Plains and the government contributed $225,000 and $450,000 respectively to development of the facility.

Greater Geelong Council officially re-opened Fyans Park Kindergarten this week following a $1.2 million redevelopment of the centre. The city’s Community Life acting general manager Tim Hellsten said the extension and refurbishment had more than doubled the capacity of the centre. The larger learning environment would cater for an additional 66 children, he said. “The refurbishment of the building will inject a new lease of life into existing facilities.” Mr Hellsten said early childhood studies

showed a link between high-quality preschool programs and “bright futures”. “So the city is investing heavily in kindergartens and early childhood programs.” The council provided $836,000 for the development, while the State Government contributed $350,000. Mr Hellsten acknowledged the kindergarten’s staff, parents and committee of management contribution to the redevelopment. Geelong MP Christine Couzens was at the re-opening of the Fyans Park Kindergarten on Wednesday, along with members of its committee of management.

Big Cat retires after 20 years with message for wanna-be basketballers:

Never too old to storm the court By Justin Ware One of Geelong’s longest elite sport careers has ended with advice that “it’s never too late” for anyone wanting to play basketball. Sebastian ‘Seb’ Loader finished his last season this year after 440 games in South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) over the past 20 years of competition. Possibly more remarkable is that he played with just one club, Geelong Supercats. Loader revealed a non-traditional beginning to his basketball career. “It’s a bit different to most, I guess. I never really played it in my younger years. I always played cricket and took part in some tennis on the side whilst growing up. I was never the kid in school who drew attention for being great at basketball. “I was always one of the taller kids but then I had a huge growth spurt when I was around 17 - I shot up from six foot to 6’8” in just a couple of years. t was pretty crazy … and as a result I got dragged into a mate’s basketball team. “In all honesty, I played for fun the first couple of years. I’d just turned 18 and had a few distractions at that point in time. It wasn’t until I was in my early 20s where a few people said they thought that with some hard work and effort I could be a good player. The rest is history.” Loader admitted he was “one of a dying breed” during his basketball days as centre-player only “I didn’t have the skill set to go off the dribble and I didn’t shoot much,” he chuckled. “I always played with great shooters, so I figured that we were better off them shooting and me hitting the glass instead of the other way around.

“I don’t think we were going to be winning often if the offence was going through me.” Loader said his loyalty to the Supercats came down to “friends, familiarity and potential”. “I’ve always had great mates playing down here, plus I’ve owned the local TimeZone in downtown Geelong for 13 years, so it was always going to take a lot to get me to play elsewhere. “I had a few offers over the years but I think those teams all knew that I was a pretty loyal guy. “For me, it’s always been about playing with mates and for my city in front of family and friends. “It doesn’t hurt that playing in front of a packed Arena is a pretty special experience, so at the end of the day why would I go elsewhere?” Loader was disappointed to end his career without the season’s ultimate prize but took solace in his relationships with teammates over the years. “Coming into the season the aim was obviously to give ourselves a shot to win a SEABL title,” he said. “I’ve been lucky to play with a great bunch of guys who I’ve been mates with for a long time and it wasn’t to be in the end. However, looking back the standard of the league has improved so much. “There are some really great players in the SEABL at the moment and the league was so even that if you didn’t bring your A game every night then anyone could beat you - that’s the sign of a great competition.” Now 40, Loader encouraged anyone wanting to play basketball to “make your own story”. “Inexperienced, out of shape or old, it’s not too late. You don’t need to have played from the age of seven to be a great player - pick up a ball and get to work.”

DURABLE: Big Seb Loader stalks the court during one of his 440 SEABL games for the Supercats.

A gold medal could produce an “influx” of shooters at Geelong’s major range, according to a sports body. And a facilities upgrade would help Little River’s Eagle Park cater for the surge after trap shooter Catherine Skinner’s win at Rio, said the Victorian branch of Sporting Shooters Association Australia (SSAA). State Government and SSAA Victoria had pledged $100,000 and $50,000 respectively for improvements at Eagle Park, “one of the association’s premier ranges”. The upgrades would include three new clay target throwers to accommodate new shooters inspired by Skinner, SSAA Victoria said. “Our five-stand range will have the benefit of two new clay target throwers and a third new clay target thrower will be installed on the public shooting range,” said SSAA Victoria’s facilities manager, Shaun Doyle. “The five stand range operates from 10am to 4pm throughout the weekend but the clay target thrower on the main range will give shooters the opportunity to shoot clay targets on Mondays and Fridays as well.” Other upgrades would include additional benches, an office refurbishment and construction of a disability access ramp on the public range. SSAA Victoria chief Jack Wegman said the projects would “pave the way for new shooters to join the sport”. He praised recent heart attack victim and Victorian Sport Minister John Eren, whose seat of Lara includes Little River, for helping deliver the state money. “I’d like to acknowledge … John Eren and the (state) Shooting Sports Facilities Program panel for supporting us through this process.” Mr Eren wrote to the association that the Victorian Government was “strongly committed to developing the shooting sports”. “We understand the important role that the sport plays in fostering a vibrant, inclusive and

Greater Geelong has ranked second for animal cruelty out of Victoria’s 79 local council areas (LGA), according to a list released by RSPCA Victoria on Wednesday. RSPCA Victoria received 553 animal welfare reports in Greater Geelong this financial year out of 11,840 statewide. RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said the geographic data will support the organisation’s cruelty prevention efforts. “We will be using this data to help us identify the areas that would benefit most from community education and support.” Of the 553 reports received in Greater Geelong, 310 related to dogs, 20 to puppies, 65 to cats, 17 to kittens and 83 to horses.

The number included 118 underfed animals, 68 abandoned and 70 concerns about animals being beaten or wounded. “Even one cruelty issue is one too many, yet the number of reports we receive is steadily increasing every year,” Dr Walker said. “We know that the community is becoming more concerned about animal welfare - which may be part of the reason for the continued rise in report numbers.” While Greater Geelong was second on the list, according 2011 Census data it had the second highest population of Victorian LGAs. An RSPCA spokesperson said the list was based the total number of reports, not the number per capita.

Fine, jail risk for flathead plunder

6-12 Plantation Rd Corio

BUSTED: The flathead catch seized on Monday. Flathead are one of the most common species in Corio Bay. Most legal catches range from 30cm to 45cm, although larger specimens are regularly caught around the bay and toward Queenscliff. Flathead are prized for their quality as a food fish, often selling for relatively high prices despite how common they are in Victorian coastal waters.

Call 5274 9399 12322278-CG36-16

A haul of mostly undersized flathead from Cunningham Pier could cost a Melbourne couple thousands of dollars in fines, according to Fisheries Victoria. And another $18,600 or even jail time could be added to the penalty after the pair allegedly tried to prevent discovery of their illegal catch, the department warned. The bust began when officers watched the pair carry a bucket of undersized fish to their vehicle after a tip-off on Monday 5 September, Fisheries Victoria posted on Facebook this week. “When officers asked to search the vehicle the couple claimed to have locked the keys in the car,” the department posted. The department pointed out that its officers had power to search any vehicle associated with people involved in fishing activities. A search of the vehicle uncovered 46 flathead in the boot “30 of which were smaller than the minimum size” it said. The catch limited for the species involved was 20 of a minimum 27cm in length. “A 55-year-old man and 45-year-old woman from Meadow Heights will be summoned to appear in the Geelong Magistrates’ Court for allegedly taking 46 flathead, 30 of which were undersize,” it said. “Penalties relating to taking undersize fish carry fines of up to $31,000. Hindering an authorised officer can result in fines of up to $18,600 or 12 months’ jail.” Fisheries Victoria urged anyone who saw suspicious fishing activity to report it to 133 474 13FISH - “anywhere in Victoria, any time”. “In circumstances where officers can’t respond to a call the information provided is valuable and helps us plan future patrols and operations,” the department said.

LIBERAL: Sarah Henderson.

LABOR: Richard Marles.

On foreign fields A new report shows that foreigners own “just” 13.6 per cent of Australian farmland, according to Liberal MP Sarah Henderson. But Labor attacked her comments on the Agricultural Land Register figures as proving that Coalition MPs were “incoherent and at war with themselves over foreign investment”. Ms Henderson welcomed the register’s first report saying it was “designed to increase scrutiny and transparency in Australian agricultural ownership”. The register revealed that foreign investors held just 13.6 per cent of all Australian agricultural land, she said. Foreign farmland holdings in Victoria were 5.1 per cent. Ms Henderson, the Federal Corangamite MP, said United Kingdom investors accounted for 52 per cent of the national figure. The countries with the next largest shares were the US, the Netherlands, Singapore and China, Ms Henderson said. She highlighted the Chinese holdings, saying they were less than half a per cent of Australian farmland.

“Foreign investment is integral for Australia’s economy,” Ms Henderson said. “It contributes to our growth, productivity and creates jobs. Foreign trade and investment has always driven our economy forward and created jobs in Australia for Australians. “Despite this, it is vital that Australians have confidence that these investments are in the national interest and that is why the transparency and scrutiny this register provides is so important.” In response, Labor Corio MP Richard Marles savaged Ms Henderson and the Turnbull government over foreign investment. “By tightening up foreign investment restrictions this government has put at risk investment for the future development of this country,” said Mr Marles, Labor’s defence shadow minister. “Labor believes that foreign investment is critical and that a full register should have greater powers to help attract that critical investment.” The Australian Tax Office administers the register, available at firb.gov.au

Letters Back to the futurist Any chance Geelong’s council administrators will reveal the cost to ratepayers for the visiting “futurist” (Double Take, 2 September)? The highly paid part-time three musketeers have been media-mooted as the answer to what ails City Hall. They’ve talked up a storm, arranged conferences, indulged in talkfests and been praised by fawning local media. Sport teams and businesses have at their intrinsic core an ethos of putting a score on the board as a sign of success or failure. It would be a poor team or business that had no score at all. What have the administrators actually achieved where the rubber meets the road in the real world beyond feel-good, touchy-feely propaganda? They have no score on the board. Anything to do with Geelong Football Club would be passed at the speed of light but when it comes to selling excessive and/or unused property, such as Geelong Gaol, one of our previous mayor’s few good ideas, those involved are granted more time to prevaricate and procrastinate. Administrators should show us their score on the board through this newspaper or call another media PR operation to tell us the facts. They should show us what they’ve done to achieve their charter; real stuff, not waffle, smoke and mirrors, which City Hall hierarchies have given us for years now. We don’t need a “futurist” to tell us the state of play in Geelong - the lessons of history educate us. Those who choose to ignore history repeat its mistakes. W Boyd Geelong West

New ideas need schooling Last week’s Future Geelong forum left many unanswered questions for me and others who attended. Some of the concepts were spurious, especially those involving personal empowerment,

the increasing digitisation of the world and education. We are incessantly told about global this and global that but, in effect, globalisation has occurred without ordinary people even getting a say on it as our governments increasingly globalise. The theme of personal empowerment was debatable because the implementation of such will happen through the likes of councils, whose ongoing impact on ratepayers is anything but empowerment. Councils are increasingly dictatorial, implementing laws without proper community consent.

Digitisation has increasingly addicted users to mobile phones and computers, arguably decreasing their ability to properly communicate. Digital education increasingly dumbs-down rather than produces literate, knowledgeable and inquiring youth. Computers, like poker machines, are habitforming and about isolation rather than real communication. Old-style schooling was about discipline and real outcomes, not being shoved through with a second-rate mark to prevent emotional scars from flunking. So many of these now widely floated ideas

Frustrated to death Impulse control is a fundamental skill for safe driving. Frustrated drivers cause accidents but far too many drivers allow themselves this luxury, which has no place when in charge of a potentially lethal weapon. Patience is the opposite of frustration. We can all allow ourselves to feel frustration but it is the emotionally mature driver who can demonstrate courtesy to other drivers. Arriving a little late is far preferable to having a catastrophic accident and arriving at the morgue. Me-first drivers should think about this when flutters of frustration cloud their common sense. Tradie reaps bad karma An elderly woman, aged 89, needed two light globes replaced. She had no family or friends to assist her with this simple task. Fiercely independent, she chose not to call upon her neighbours. She rang a tradie, an electrician. The 30-yearold turned up pronto in a top-line vehicle. He installed the new globes and left after less than five minutes - but not before charging $125 for a call-out and $50 for parts and fitting. He had no social conscience whatsoever. It was unmitigated greed. What you sow, so shall you reap. Michael J Gamble Belmont

FINALLY FRIDAY

Glenn’s on the little river of time By Luke Voogt Australian rock legend Glenn Shorrock is still tearing up the stage, despite hitting 72 a couple months ago. “I never thought I’d be still rocking and rolling at this age - although I’m more coasting now,” he said ahead of his Geelong show next weekend. “I won’t stop until someone tells me to shut up.” The “instant gratification” of a live audience is what keeps Shorrock going. “I’d be very sad if I was to leave the stage and people weren’t entertained,” he said. “The money’s not bad either.” Shorrock’s Little River Band made history in the ’70s and ’80s, becoming one of the world’s most popular bands. But he still owes a “nod” to Geelong after a trip to Little River inspired the band’s name in 1975. “We were on our way to a gig in Geelong and I thought that sounds like the name of a band,” he said. “Had we gone a few miles the other way we could have been named ‘wrong way go back’.” Despite Little River Band’s success, Shorrock’s first outfit The Twilights was his favourite, he said. “They grew out of friendship rather than ambition.” The band, a group of friends from Adelaide, won Hoadley’s National Battle of the Sounds in 1966. The national music contest was one of Shorrock’s fondest memories and launched his musical career. “That took us to England and gave us the experience of being known as the best band in the country - but that didn’t last long.” Shorrock started singing at 17 and said he had aspired to two goals.

ROCKIN’: Australian rock legend Glenn Shorrock will be in Geelong next weekend “I would like to be doing this when I’m 50 and I would like the respect of my peers. I’m well beyond 50 now but I’m still enjoying it.” Shorrock will celebrate his musical journey in The History of Rock and Roll - Part 1, with hits from Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles and more. “It’s a self-indulgent show in a way,” he said. “I just wanted to explore my path and let peo-

ple know what inspired me - you can’t do the history of rock and roll in one night - so it’s part one.” Shorrock will sing at Costa Hall on 17 September, backed by a nine-piece band. “The hall is the perfect place for it,” he said. “I’m doing the Palms Hotel at Crown the night before, so I’ll be well-oiled.” Shorrock will also release new album Rise

Again this week, which grew from an EP thanks to a little help from his friends. “When I started recording it, I started getting calls from colleagues saying they had songs for me,” he said. “You’ve got to keep re-inventing yourself in this game.”

FINALLY FRIDAY A little gold-dust

ADVENTURE: Ian Stenlake, Pia Miranda and Grant Piro star in Around the World in 80 Days

Around for all the action Stampeding elephants, raging typhoons and runaway trains come to Geelong in the original amazing race Around the World in 80 Days. Producer Helen Ellis said she was delighted to produce an Australian adaptation of the classic tale in a “completely unexpected way”. “Audiences are going to be taken on an extraordinary trip around the globe without ever leaving Geelong.” The play features three accomplished onscreen actors Ian Stenlake, Pia Miranda and Grant Piro, playing 39 different characters as they traverse seven continents. Miranda is best known for her lead role in

What’sat on

Looking for Alibrandi, which won Best Film at the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2000. She has acted in a number of drama series such as Neighbours as well as other Australian and American films since. Stenlake played roles in Australian dramas Sea Patrol and Stingers and even appeared as a waiter in The Godfather III. Piro also worked on Sea Patrol and Stingers and had roles in a score of Australian dramas including Sea Change, Blue Heelers and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries in 2015. The play follows fearless adventurer Phileas Fogg and his faithful manservant Passepartout as

they race to win a wager by circling the globe in 80 days. Fogg travels the world with a band of quirky adventurers while a relentless Scotland Yard detective snaps at his heels. At story includes adventures across India, China, Japan and America, beating the clock and winning the bet. The production opens on 14 September for five performances in Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Drama Theatre as part of its 2016 Deakin University Theatre Season.

GPAC’s Musical Mornings program continues in September with John Bowles and Michelle Fitzmaurice in Country Gold. This narrated concert celebrates a century of country music legends including Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Australia’s own Slim Dusty. It features some of country’s biggest hits including Rhinestone Cowboy, Thank God I’m A Country Boy and Could I Have This Dance. Australian musical theatre veteran John Bowles returns to Australia for the concert with long-time friend and award-winning singer-actress Michelle Fitzmaurice. GOLDEN: John Bowles Bowles grew up on and Michelle Fitzmaurice. Young Talent Time, recording solo and group albums, and clocking up 250 hours of live variety television. He played lead roles in Phantom of the Opera and Cats, and was in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first commercial performance in China in 2001. Bowles won best new talent (1989) and best male vocal variety performer (2001) at the Mo Awards, which recognise achievements in Australian live entertainment. For 15 years Fitzmaurice has co-directed and choreographed for Promac Productions Australia which she runs with her husband Chris McKenna. She acted in television commercials and played a guest role on Australian drama Neighbours. Musician David Cameron will back the duo on piano, banjo and guitar with Paul Cengia on drums and back-up guitar. Country Gold comes to GPAC for two performances at The Playhouse at 10.30am on 14 and 15 September. The season continues in October with The Syncopators in Best of British, a musical exploration of Britain through the ’50s and ’60s.

It may be a ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ in Keats’ poetic England, but in Melbourne, autumn can throw up anything from a sizzler to an icy blast. And this is where family-owned On Site Flyscreens – opened by Simon Geddes more than 16 years ago, with brother Ben joining him in 2006 – comes in. On Site Flyscreens recently supplied and installed a triple-lock security door to a 92-year-old Corio man after he was attacked at his home for a third time in recent months. The firm specialises in the manufacture and installation of roller shutters, along with flyscreens (including retractables), screen doors, grilles and security doors. Simon says roller shutters are fantastic additions to homes, for any season and for two important reasons. He’s also keen to encourage installation – so mention this story for a 30 per cent

The team from Hunter Cuthill.

Hunter Cuthill and Autologic deliver power, save on petrol IMPROVING a car’s power by up to 30 per cent while actually improving fuel economy sounds like a big ask for a Land Rover, BMW, Mini or Jaguar or other European marques. Not so, says Hunter Cuthill director Adam Hunter. It’s readily achievable by using top-line Autologic technology, he advises, adding that it’s also a sound way of ensuring efficiency performance in a more-sustainable fashion. Hunter Cuthill, in Geelong West’s Autumn St, specialises in quality independent servicing and repairs to all BMWs, Land Rover, Mini and Jaguars - as per factory schedules and directives and with full book service. The business also services car makes including Peugeot, Renault and Citroen. It is the only service centre in Geelong outside of direct dealers with the software and diagnostic equipment for these brands. “We utilise state of the art diagnostic equipment from Autologic, the world’s leading independent vehicle diagnostic software,” Adam says. “It’s the only independent tool that can program control units. Autologic also offer software power upgrades for diesel and some petrol engines, giving 30 per cent more power while improving fuel economy.” Hunter Cuthill is also right across the best battery choices to meet the energy demands of European cars. VARTA batteries, powered by AGM technology, feature advanced equipment such as start-stop technologies and regenerative braking systems. “This is a battery that delivers optimal performance, faster conductivity and reliable starting power, even when the charge is low,” Adam says. “AGM batteries deliver up to eight times the cyclic stability of conventional flooded batteries resulting in a longer battery life.” Hunter Cuthill is at 9 Autumn St, Geelong West, phone 5229 4299 or visit huntercuthill. com.au.

SPORT Finals deja vu for Menzel By Luke Voogt Geelong forward Daniel Menzel is looking forward to his first final in five years Friday night, following his much-documented comeback after four separate knee reconstructions. It’s a dream finals return for Menzel, who relishes the big games. “I hope there are 90,000 there,” he said. “It’s the pointy end now, that’s when you want to be playing.” Menzel sustained his major first knee injury in 2011 in the Cat’s qualifying final win against Hawthorn. “You think about it every single day, getting back there and being a chance to play in the finals,” he said. Coincidently, like 2011, Geelong will take on archrivals Hawthorn in a qualifying final Friday. “I’ve had a lot of people message me and say its five years to the night against the same team ... at the same ground, in the same final,” he said. “Which is uncanny, but to be honest it won’t even cross my mind.” Menzel said the Cats forwards will need to fire to make sure free-running Hawthorn defenders like Josh Gibson will “have to defend”. This, he said, would help neutralise Hawthorn’s run off half back. “We probably haven’t been dangerous enough as a forward group.” “Against the Demons we all played our roles really well ... and it meant Hawk (Tom Hawkins) got those one-on-one contests.” Menzel said his body was in good shape as were the Cats’ selection options. “For me since 2011 we haven’t had this much of depth at the club,” he said. Cats coach Chris Scott said at a press conference Tuesday he was confident Menzel could perform. “All the evidence has showed he could be a big game player.” Scott said last weekend’s bye, while controversial, had given injured players time to recover. “The guys that are in a little bit of a race against time have made some good progress. We feel like we’ve got a few pretty good options sitting just outside our 22.” “The news out of the opposition camp seems to be similar. I think that’s what footy fans want, they want both teams to be close to their best they can put on the best show.” Scott said he was looking at plans for Hawthorn’s star midfielder Sam Mitchell and dangerous forward Cyril Rioli. “We do have a few candidates - not saying anyone in the competition is perfectly equipped to deal with that threat - (Rioli’s) a fantastic player.” However, he said, it would take multiple team efforts to contain a number of Hawthorn players.

Warriors to shake Thunder as Galaxy identifies its stars By Josip Zilic North Geelong Warriors takes on Dandenong Thunder at Port Melbourne’s JL Murphy Reserve this weekend for a shot at the final playoff against NPL1 third-last finisher Richmond. Dandenong worked hard for a 2-0 win last week against Springvale and could have claimed the NPL2 East Championship and automatic promotion if not for Kingston’s last-minute equaliser at Brunswick. Dandenong coach Hus Skenderovic will have his side primed for the occasion, with danger man Brandon Barnes finding the target again last week. North Geelong also had its hands full last weekend while battling to a 2-1 win at Ballarat. The young Ballarat outfit had the lion’s share of proceedings early but wayward shots and Daniel Zilic’s good keeping prevented the Red Devils being well ahead inside the first 20 minutes. The Warriors clawed their way back, with Nicholas Jurcic returning to scoring form on 27 minutes when he overlapped Kene Eze to drive in the opener from the edge of the box. Ballarat stepped up the tempo when danger man Michael Trigger unleashed a spectacular effort from range on 55 minutes, beating Zilic and levelling the scores. However, the Warriors sealed the win seven 34 GEELONG INDY Friday, 9 September, 2016

RESPECT: Galaxy grand final player of the match Annabel Martin. Picture: MARK TIZARD minutes later as Juso Julardzija found the net with a well-worked ball from Michael Anderson. “It’s important to come away with a win like this today in this finals-type atmosphere,“ coach Micky Colina said. “It’s exactly what is needed for the game to come and hopefully beyond. Our fans again were brilliant coming to Ballarat to spur the team on, best fans in the league”. Saturday’s match begins 6pm.

In women’s soccer, Geelong’s Galaxy earned respect for its grand final performance against favourite Calder United in the inaugural WNPL Final at ABD Stadium last Saturday. Starting from zero and building a club from the base up is no mean feat on its own, let alone with the responsibility of competing at the peak of the competition’s structure. Galaxy took control early in the grand final with driving build-ups from player of the match Annabel Martin. Galaxy was rewarded for its dominance when Kariah White received a Martin through-ball, which she lifted for Caitlyn Pickett to head neatly on 32 minutes. But on 57 minutes a free kick outside the area floated into the goalmouth but Galaxy keeper Kelsey Quinn looked to mishandle it and Kasha Meyer tapped it over the line. Galaxy finished the half with three open attempts blazing high and wide. In the second half, Galaxy paid for inaccuracy when Enza Barilla swooped on a cross from the opposite flank to place the shot past Quinn. Galaxy ran through the changes and finished strongly, but its efforts weren’t rewarded. Coach Vince Ierardo was proud of his side’s performance after the game and acknowledging the impact the travelling supporters made to the cause.

Clifton Springs remained a go-to location for squid and whiting over the past week as anglers awaited the annual run of snapper that begins about this time. The Point Richards channel off Clifton Springs produced snapper to 7kg in limited numbers, which at least showed they were around. The most effective baits were fresh squid and silver whiting. Barry Wood ventured out from Indented Heads to drift for flathead, managing several nice-sized fish on bluebait. Then Barry noticed something different hit his bait, so he send down a squid jig down and boated three good-sized specimens. They were also the main target at Queenscliff with quality squid to 2kg taken in the Point Lonsdale Bight. Larger jigs accounted for most captures, with size 3.5 popular. Whiting were also targeted with the grass beds producing fish to 45cm. Kevin Hunter managed a flathead just over 1kg while chasing whiting on the grass beds on Saturday evening. The Barwon River estuary held fantastic numbers of mullet, small Australian salmon and silver trevally. Cut up pippies and prawns on a running sinker rig fished from one of the numerous land-based platforms produced doog numbers of fish during the run-in tide. Anglers who sourced live Bass yabbies caught bream in the upper reaches of the system. The south-west coast was exceptional recently for world-class action on southern bluefin tuna. Damien Berg and Christian Jones travelled down to Port Macdonald where they trolling a Tornado T7 skirted lure. Their first fish tipped the scales to 100kg while their second barrel was almost an identical weight. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore was up again at first light trolling the lake margins of Lake Purrumbete. Short-changed by a matter of grams for the elusive 10lb trophy trout last time, he was determined to hit the mark. Michael’s Tassie Devil was soon taken by a trout that leapt numerous times before he boated the 75cm brown trout, which passed the magical mark to reach 5.47kg. Michael used a twin-assist hook set-up on his lure which worked a treat in embedding both hooks well into the trout’s jaw. He went on to fish the rest of the morning, finishing with another brown trout of 4.46kg.

Teen tames surf to take title win Jan Juc teenager Bella Wilson has cemented herself as a future talent by taking the Victorian Open Women’s title at the age of 13. Placing second in the final round of the series saw her finish ahead of fellow Surf Coast surfer Rikki Bell-Warren (Bells Beach) by a tiny margin of 100 points. Wilson was ecstatic to win the state title in her hometown. “It feels so good to be the open women’s champion, and it’s even better to win it in my home town,” she said. “The waves were really good on Sunday. It was super fun at Bells and I had a great time surfing against everyone.” Bell-Warren used her experience at the famous surf destination to claim the third round win with a heat total of 12.10 points. Wilson finished second with 11.23. Ellie Harrison (Barwon Heads) placed third on 10.57 points with Jade Ogilvie (Pt Lonsdale) placed fourth on 9.57. Phillip Island surfer Carl Wright claimed his fourth Victorian Open title. Needing a win to ensure the title, Wright was eliminated in the first round of the event on Saturday at Bells Beach. Luckily for him, all other surfers in the running for the title were eliminated in the first two rounds handing Wright the title. Claiming his first round win was Billy Harrison (Barwon Heads). After making the Australian Team heading to the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships this month, Harrison was in form going into the event. Harrison placed first in the final in perfect three-foot waves with a heat total of 15.80 points ahead of Joe van Dijk (Phillip Island) on 13.94 points. Luke Archibald (Phillip Island) placed third on 13.50 points and Xavier Huxtable place fourth (Jan Juc) on 11.43 points. Meanwhile, the Torquay Boardriders Club claimed its seventh straight Victorian Teams Title in the perfect three-foot waves at Bells.

CHAMP: Victorian Open Women's title winner Bella Wilson. ( Liam Robertson) The event featured eight teams from around the state and Torquay club president Cahill BellWarren described it the best surfing he’d “seen in recent memory”. “To win our seventh consecutive Victorian Teams Title means a lot, but this one is probably the most special of them all,” he said. “It was by far the highest standard of surfing we have seen from all of the teams throughout the whole day.” Torquay was on a roll, moving easily through the qualification round in its hometown with newly formed Jan Juc Boardriders Club. Torquay finished first on 76.41 points, 1.4 ahead of Phillip Island on 75.37. Only four points separated first to third, with 13th Beach scoring 72.27 points and Jan Juc placing fourth with 51.96. “Every surfer on our team played his or her role perfectly, and to win by only 1.4 is incredibly satisfying,” Bell-Warren said. “It was a testament to how high the standard of surfing was.” Torquay Boardriders Club continued its dominance in the inaugural Junior event, winning over 13th Beach Boardriders Club. Point Lonsdale Boardriders finished third with South West Boardriders Club and South Coast Boardriders Club placed fourth and fifth respectively.

By Luke Voogt Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club’s under-19 surf boat crew will compete against the world’s best this month. The team flew to the Netherlands for the Lifesaving World Championships on Monday after winning Life Saving Victoria’s 'Team of the Year’ in July. Club president Noel Dubberley said he couldn’t be prouder of the team. “It’s a huge ask for a young crew to travel across half the world to compete in surf boat races.” Rowers Manning Gratwick, Jacob Morgan, John Fannon and Davis Kontelj will hope to cap off a stellar year, after winning every local competition at their level. “At the Victorian titles they basically won everything they could,” Mr Dubberley said.

The team made the final in the Australian Surf Rowing League Open, won the Victorian under19s gold and silver in the under-23s. The crew are finalists for 'Team of the Year’ at Surf Lifesaving Australia’s national awards, which will take place in Sydney on 22 October. More importantly, said Mr Dubberley, the team’s exploits and behaviour has given younger members something to aspire to. “They’ve been very good role models to the kids down here.” Veteran lifesaver Scott Tannerhill will be at the sweep mentoring the team. “As far as getting the best out of a crew you couldn’t ask for a better person,” Mr Dubberley said. The team will also compete in Biarritz, France, at the Surf Rowing Championships later this month.
