Tall timber for Ivor THE Mount Evelyn Community and the Chalkey family gathered at the old Mount Evelyn Railway station to plant a memorial tree for a local man who gave so much to the community. Ivor Chalkey worked tirelessly over the years on projects in the area but is best known for his work revitalising the station sites along Lilydale to Warburton Trail. Mr Chalkey worked with many community groups and organisations to make the trail something really special for the community of Mount Ev-

elyn and surrounds to enjoy. Ivor’s son David said the memorial tree planting at the Mount Evelyn station site on Saturday 10 September was more than just a way to commemorate his father’s work. “It was really good in the regard that we completed something Dad had started and never got to finish,” he said. “It was really important to us and that’s how family felt.” David Chalkey said his father started planting trees and vegetation at the Mount Evelyn Railway site some time ago.

“Dad noticed the Mount Evelyn platform bank was bare and horrible so started the planting there so when people look up from shops you look at plants instead of dirt.” “Unfortunately he didn’t get to finish it but we finished it for him on Saturday.” Ivor Chalkey and his wife Mary immigrated to Australia and moved to Mount Evelyn in 1958 and quickly developed a strong connection to the area. Mr Chalkey had involvement in many of the environmental and friends groups around the Mount Evelyn area

and was also a Scout leader for many years. “One main thing, with what he has done, he was very community orientated,” David Chalkey said. “He was very community-minded, like the trail was for the community and that’s what he wanted to do.” David Chalkey also said his father passed on his love of the community to his children and his long history of community work is a wonderful reminder of their father. “He was a good dad, when you played up you knew about it and he

guided us the best he could,” he said. “He definitely passed on the care and love of the area; I’m a Scout leader at Mount Evelyn myself and did a lot of work with Dad on the trail. “Wherever I go on the trail, there is something there that he has been and done; all the way out to the other side, right up to Launching Place and beyond.” Ivor Chalkey passed away in April this year at the age of 87 but his contributions to the community and his hard-working spirit live on through his children and his environmental work.

Tromp sorr y By Peter Douglas SILVAN berry farmer Mark Tromp has issued a media statement apologising over his bizarre disappearance. The Tromp family ordeal last week gained national attention, with Mark, 51, the last member located after the family fled their Silvan home on Monday 29 August. Mark was found wandering alone near Wangaratta airport about 5.50pm last Saturday, 3 September. In his statement, Mr Tromp was keen to apologise to immediate family and those caught up in the ordeal. “In recent days my family has been through a difficult period,” the statement read. “We will soon be reunited and together, I hope that we will begin to make sense of our ordeal and return to a normal life. “I am conscious of the burden these events have placed upon our extended family, friends and the community resources devoted to our aid. “Without reservation, I apol-

However, the children gradually separated from their parents on the trip. Mitchell and Ella made their way back to Melbourne and reported their parents missing. Riana was eventually found

in the back seat of a stranger’s car and later admitted to hospital, while mother Jacoba admitted herself to Yass Hospital. In a further twist, on Monday 5 September, police charged Ella with a theft of a motor vehicle and possessing the proceeds of crime. It is alleged the car was stolen in Goulburn NSW and driven to Victoria after Ella ended the journey with her parents. In the statement, Mr Tromp expressed his thanks to those investigating the disappearance. “On behalf of our family, I express our deep gratitude to Victoria and NSW police, as well as health care professionals who have looked after our physical and mental well-being,” he said. “More than anything, my family and I need time to recover and receive appropriate assistance, including mental health services.” Mr Tromp also requested the media respect their request for privacy as they work through the ordeal.

Police on the trail of flasher By Victoria Stone-Meadows POLICE are on the hunt for a man who exposed himself to two women on the Warburton Trail late last month. The first incident occurred about 9.15am on Sunday 21 August when a woman walking on the Warburton Trail, near David Road in Lilydale, was approached by the man. The man pulled down his tracksuit pants and exposed himself as he walked past the woman. Detective Senior Constable Ross McDonald from Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit said the victim gave a detailed description of the offender. “The victim described an unshaven Caucasian male of

approximately 25 years of age with muscular athletic build, wearing a grey beanie and light grey tracksuit pants,” he said. The second incident occurred about 8.15am on Sunday 28 August, also on the Warburton Trail, this time near the Mount Evelyn Skate Park. The man exposed himself to a woman on a bicycle in the same manner as the previous incident, but this time from a distance of about two metres. The victim described the offender as about 175cm tall with dark hair and a rough, unshaven appearance. Police have released a digital composite of the man in the hope it leads to some one recognising him. Det Sen Const McDonald

Smith back in the chair By Jesse Graham CASEY MP Tony Smith will sit in the Parliamentary Speaker’s chair until 2019, after being reelected to the role unopposed late last month. On Tuesday 30 August, the first sitting day of the new Parliament, Mr Smith was reappointed to the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives in Canberra. He was nominated for the role by Deakin MP Michael Sukkar, and seconded by Robertson MP Lucy Wicks and was escorted to the chair after no other nominations were put forward. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull congratulated Mr Smith on his “re-elevation” to the role, after being elected as speaker last year. “You have conducted this vitally important office with elegance, intellect, dignity, charm and impartiality,” he said. “This is a very robust chamber, as we all know, and sometimes in question time even people that are naturally very reasonable will become unreasonable and even intemperate. “But you, sir, have risen above that, and you project a

Casey MP Tony Smith being escorted to the speaker's chair after his election on 30 August. Picture: AUSPICS calm that reflects so well on our house and so well on our democracy.” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek and Leader of the House Christopher Pyne all gave congratulations speeches to Mr Smith. He told the Mail that he was still “first and foremost” the member for the Casey electorate and would continue to travel back and forth between his home in the area and Parliament. “Unlike speakers overseas, I don’t live in the Parliament,”

he said. “As a local member, I’m really acting the same as a backbench Member of Parliament in pretty much every respect - if I was a minister, I’d be needing to travel right around the country to each state a lot more. “My ability to advocate on behalf of the electorate is just as strong as it’s always been.” It was an interesting first week of Parliament for Mr Smith as Speaker, with the Coalition losing votes on in the House of Representatives on Thursday 1 September after ministers left for the day, leaving Labor with a majority on the floor. A Coalition MP, Mr Smith used his casting vote as speaker to allow debate to continue which he said comes from tradition. “There are various principles that have been established throughout history on how a Speaker should use a casting vote ... and the principle in a tied vote, if it’s tied, there’s obviously not a majority to shut down debate,” he said. “The Speaker should use their vote to allow debate to continue - that’s what I did.”

Rewards of animal foster care Animal

quite ready to go to a forever home and need the short-term love and care of a foster person or family. Some of those reasons include: The age of the animal: if under eight weeks of age, it is too young to be in a shelter environment or available for adoption. An older animal may have special needs that are better delivered in a home-like environment. Health: the animal may need some extra TLC in recovering from surgery, specialised post veterinary care, putting on or losing weight; or, in the instance of kittens, weaned from their mother.

·

Mark Menze Animal Aid CEO

CHOOSING to foster care an animal in need is both a rewarding and special experience. It is a big commitment, but the benefits of foster caring for both people and animals are unquestionable. Some of the animals that come through Animal Aid’s doors are not

·

· Temperament: animals may need so-

cialisation or training before they are ready for adoption. This can manifest itself in many ways including timidness, over or under confidence; or behavioural traits that need addressing. Placing animals into foster care addresses many problems. It also helps Animal Aid cope with peak capacity demands during the kitten season. I am often asked the question regarding foster caring - ‘isn’t it too hard to give them up when it is time for an animal to be put up for adoption?’

In some instances, a foster carer/ family may become very attached to an animal and decide to adopt it themselves, but in most instances the reward is knowing that their efforts in caring for an animal in need have paid off and the animal is ready for its new loving home. And I can assure you that fostering can be very entertaining. In my household, we usually have a litter of kittens on the loose and they are always performing. Animal Aid is preparing itself for the kitten season and if history is anything to go by, we can expect over 900 kittens and pregnant cats to come into

By Victoria Stone-Meadows

Tourist safety trail By Peter Douglas THE contentious Mount Dandenong Tourist Road is set for a major safety upgrade, with Monbulk MP James Merlino announcing $220,000 in improvements. The commitment is set to include improved signage and guide posts, as well as line marking at high-risk and medium-risk bends along the 22-kilometre route. Each day, about 10,000 vehicles, including 800 trucks, travel up and down the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, with the road becoming increasingly popular with cyclists. The tight corners along the road are a known safety concern, with 64 run-off and head-on crashes along bends on the road in the five-year period ending December 2014. Twenty-two of these crashes resulted in serious injuries.

In sections of the road where the speed limit is 70km/h, there have been 32 crashes, including 12 serious injury crashes. Mr Merlino hoped the safety improvements would reduce these statistics. “These improvements will help motorists understand that they need to slow down and take extra care when travelling through bends,” he said. “We’re making the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road safer for residents in the Dandenong Ranges, as well as the tourists and cyclists that enjoy this scenic route.” As part of the safety project, it is proposed to reduce the existing 70km/h speed limits to 60km/h, which will make the speed environment more consistent with other sections of the road and have a significant safety benefit.

The $220,000 commitment represents part of the Labor Government’s Towards Zero road safety vision. This recent announcement comes after Liberal rival and La Trobe MP Jason Wood earlier this year called for greater action on the road. Before the federal election, Mr Wood announced a $10 million election promise to widen sections of the road, which he said was much-needed and could be one of the largest funding commitments ever for road safety in the region. Mr Wood said the influx of tourists and cyclists needed to be addressed. “Ever since Cadel Evans won the Tour de France (in 2011), the amount of cyclists riding up through here on the weekend is unbelievable,” he said. “But the locals use the road, too. They may be taking the kids to the footy. It’s a recipe for disaster.”

JUST weeks before the Yarra Ranges Council Elections, Mayor Jason Callanan has taken emergency sick leave to undergo surgery. On Thursday 1 September, Cr Callanan’s wife Lisa took to his public Facebook pages to notify his followers that he had become ill. “Cr Jason Callanan is on unexpected sick leave and will not be accessing this page for a couple of weeks,” the post said. It is unclear what illness had befallen Cr Callanan with Yarra Ranges Council remaining tightlipped about his condition. The Callanan family have requested privacy while Cr Callanan recovers, but Deputy Mayor Andrew Witlox thanked everyone for their concern. “Jason’s family is appreciative of the concern shown by many people who have asked about his condition,” Cr Witlox said. “We ask that the privacy of Jason and his family be respected during this time to enable him to rest and recover.” Yarra Ranges Council elections will take place

Letters Dog of an act IT'S disappointing that (Victorian) Deputy Premier James Merlino still supports the cruel greyhound racing industry, despite recently adopting one of its hapless victims (‘Sara completes Merlino family’, Mail, 6 September). Each year in Australia, around 18,000 greyhounds exactly like new family member Sara - are killed by this ruthless industry simply because they can’t run fast enough to make money. But there is little joy in life even for those who can run fast. Locked away in barren, wire cages - often inside gloomy sheds - they never get to do the things dogs normally

like to do. NSW Premier Mike Baird recently made the admirable and ethical decision to ban greyhound racing in his state. He said that although he had empathy for those who stood to lose their jobs, he could no longer allow the “widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals". It’s high time James Merlino and the Andrews Government followed Mike Baird’s ethical lead and put ethics ahead of dollars. Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.

Smart students find their way By Peter Douglas AN enthusiastic group of Mater Christi students are putting their problem-solving skills to the test as they participate in the renowned Smart City Project. The project is the creation of ITS Australia activity, which encourages students who have an interest in science and technology. Twenty girls from Years 9 and 10 will collaborate with students nationwide to design and build a model smart city, with robotic cars autonomously negotiating traffic lights, pedestrians and buildings. The projects will be presented to industry professionals at the 23rd Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress, held from 10 to 14 October, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Year 10 science enthusiast, Jordan Conroy-Benson, said the project was an enjoyable activity. “The challenge has been so much fun, so far, being able to talk with other students around Australia to solve problems and come up with new ideas has been a great experience,” Jordan said. “I’ve learnt so much around and I am so proud of what we’ve accomplished so far.” At the helm of the program is Roland Gesthuizen, one of Australia’s leading technology educators, who is based at Ma-

Hear from fire ecologists and community emergency groups to gain valuable and practical knowledge about living with bushfire. Yarra Ranges Council Deputy Mayor Andrew Witlox stressed the importance of this conference especially for residents living in bushfire-prone regions. “Both days give residents the chance to gain insights, ask questions and build on their existing knowledge while networking with people living in

similar areas,” he said. “The reality is that the Australian landscape will experience bushfires, with us all sharing the responsibility for our community’s and our own safety. “With registrations now open for the annual Living with Bushfire Community Conference, I encourage all residents to attend to get the latest data and research into bushfire risk and behavior. “As we head into the warmer months, the conference is a timely reminder for us all to gain a greater understanding of bushfire in Victoria.” Register online today or check out the program: www. boxhill.edu.au/bushfireconference2016/.

Tiptoe in the tulips By Jodie Symonds SILVAN tulip grower Paul Tesselaar and his team have been busy planting an extra 150,000 tulips for this year’s Tesselaar Tulip Festival. In its 63rd year, the event will display a sea of 900,000 colourful flowers during 9 September and 6 October. Mr Tesselaar said the theme for this year’s event was Tulips Down Under.

“It’s about people enjoying and looking at what we’ve got in Australia,” Mr Tesselaar said. “It’ll feature a sculpture competition with an Australiana focus.” The sculptures will be placed throughout the tulip fields for visitors to look at. Mr Tesselaar said the Australiana theme was inspired by his grandparents, who moved from Australia from the Netherlands in 1939.

“They began growing tulips once they moved here, and it’s about our history I suppose,” he said. The extra thousands of tulips weren’t too much trouble for the Tesselaars to plant. “We were already planting 750,000 so I thought: “Why not plant another 150,000?” he said. Event favourites including the children’s days, Turkish, Dutch and Irish weekends and the food, wine

and jazz weekend will all be back this year. “While we have all of the other entertainment, the tulips are undoubtedly the star of the show,” Mr Tesselaar said. “They’re absolutely captivating at their best.” Tickets cost $26 for adults and children under 16 are free. For more information, or to book early, visit www.trybooking.com.

You’ll feel the horror - to the bone Don’t Breathe (MA15+) Starring Stephen Lang, Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette DON’T Breathe is one of the best mainstream horror movies of the year. Three small-time Detroit crooks attempt to rob the home of an old blind man. Little do they know, the Blind Man (Stephen Lang) is an unhinged Gulf War veteran, and he

proceeds to hunt them mercilessly throughout his house. Don’t Breathe achieves a level of realism and nail-biting suspense rarely seen in modern horror. The characters are well-developed, the dialogue feels natural and there is enough nuance for you to reasonably sympathise and side with either the robbers or the Blind Man. Lang is terrifying as the Blind

Man. With a formidable, prowling presence, the Blind Man is deadly despite his blindness, and possesses a distinct advantage on his home turf. This is also a film that humanises its disabled antagonist; the Blind Man is a violent, vindictive man who just happens to be blind. While Don’t Breathe’s cinematography is starkly beautiful, director Fede Alvarez makes evocative,

masterful use of eerie sound effects, plot-important objects and set geography - which all relate to senses the Blind Man still has - to fully immerse us in the claustrophobic setting and ramp up the suspense. Brutal and unrelentingly tense, Don’t Breathe is a truly phenomenal horror film. - Seth Lukas Hynes

A NEIL Diamond Tribute act, starring Dominic Finley formerly of Cutting Crew, will be bringing an exclusive Neil Diamond experience to Burrinja Cultural Centre. ‘Hot August Night and me; A Neil Diamond Story’ will see Finley and his bandmates performing the legendary album ‘Hot August Night’ in full. The show will also feature stories about how the songs were created, and of Diamond’s dark journey from being a struggling Brooklyn poet, to becoming one of the world’s most loved performers. Though Finley’s background is worlds away from the origin of Mr Diamond himself, the show is a powerful tribute to a man who influences music for generations. Finley is backed by the ‘Diamantes’, a fantastic band whose musical characters bring that very special Hot August Night back to life. The audience will be delighted with renditions of Sweet Caroline, I am ... I said, Song Sung Blue, Crunchy Granola Suite and many more. ‘Hot August Night and me; A Neil Diamond Story’ will grace the stage at Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey for one night only on Saturday 224 September. For your chance to see this one of a kind tribute show, contact the box office at Burrinja on 9754 8723 or visit www.burrinja.org.au.

A classical team GUITAR duo, the Grigoryan Brothers will be bringing their classical music to the Yarra Ranges in September and November. Joined by special guest Jose Carbo, the musicians will be playing at Healesville’s The Memo on Sunday 11 September and Upwey’s Burrinja on Saturday 12 November. “The three of us have a great simpatico,” Mr Carbo said. “Sitting down together in front of an audience to perform these songs that we all love is going to be extremely satisfying.” The Grigoryan Brothers were nominated a 2015 ARIA Music Award for Classical Album of the Year. They are internationally known for their music across Europe, the United Kindom, Asia, Russia, South Africa and the Middle East. To book tickets, visit www.culturetracks.info.

A Grade 5 adventure By Victoria Stone-Meadows AS part of Yarra Hills Secondary College’s endeavour to build better relationships with feeder schools and the wider community, the school had their first ever ‘Grade 5 Explorations Day’. Grade 5 students from across the region visited the school to get acquainted with what high school was like and join in some fun learning activities. Running over two days, 6 September and 8 September, Yarra Hills invited close to 300 schools to come and participate in a variety of activities. Assistant Principal at Yarra Hills Mooroolbark Campus Rachel Lynch said both staff and students from the primary school had a great time. “It was fantastic and everyone is really happy,” she said. “Building the connection with the primary schools is extremely important and something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.” The exploration days coincided with EnviroWeek 2016 so the school planned a range of activities around the environment and protecting it. The activities students were involved in were based around recycling, renewable energy and plant science. Students learned about ways they could become better waste watchers and questioned how humans and environment influence each other. Students also had the opportunity to build a mini terrarium to gain and understanding of how different environments work. Ms Lynch also said the theme of environment week was a great basis for the exploration days. “It was good to do something

Hunt is on for child stalker By Victoria Stone-Meadows POLICE are on the lookout for a man who followed a 12-year-old girl in Launching Place in late July. About 3.30pm on Friday 22 July, the girl had got off her school bus on the Warburton Highway when she noticed a man following her in a car. The girl told police the man followed her closely, at times smiling and waving to her, for about five minutes before driving away. The girl described the man she saw as about 40 years old with dark coloured skin and wearing a black beanie at the time, police have released a digital image of what the man may look like. The girl was also able to give a limited description of the vehicle and police have released an image of a similar style and colour of car. Investigators urge anyone who may have information about the man or vehicle to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

Athletics fun for all kids By Jamie Strudley A COLD, dreary morning greeted athletes at Lillydale Lake parkrun on Saturday morning. The weather didn’t improve much as the Yarra Ranges Athletics club held a community information morning immediately after the park run. Fortunately, the weather did not deter many members, and those seeking more information about the fun of athletics ... run, jump, throw! A fun morning of questions, games, races and prizes kept everybody entertained. If you missed the morning, or want to know more, visit the all new and improved website at www.yarrarangesathletics. org.au. The next club event is Tan relays on Saturday, a fantastic climax to the Athletics Victoria XCR season.

The parkrun volunteers ensured the event was a big success. 159175 They are well-placed in several grades and are hopefully of retaining or improving those positions in the final round. After that, the club looks forward to the Saturday 8 October for the opening rounds of the track and field season.

For information on how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit the all new and improved website at yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check us out the Facebook page. Run, jump, throw ... too easy!

Motoring Toyota sales to tippy-top Toyota’s market-leading August tally of 18,650 sales was more than 28 per cent higher than the same month last year - the company’s best August apart from an extraordinary 2007 result. August was the second consecutive month in which Toyota sold more than twice as many new vehicles as any other brand. Corolla, including the new hy-

brid variant, was the nation’s topselling vehicle for the month with dealers distributing 3554 hatches and sedans, an increase of 16.5 per cent compared with a year earlier. HiLux was a close second with 3311 deliveries - a dramatic improvement on the corresponding month last year when the previous generation model was in run-out. These two acclaimed models

have also grabbed the sales ‘quinella’ so far in 2016, although the positions are reversed with HiLux having its nose in front by fewer than 100 units as Australia’s best-seller - 27,618 to 27,525 sales. So far this year, Toyota dealers have delivered 138,459 vehicles - a gain of 4.1 per cent compared to the same period last year, almost 60,000 vehicles ahead of its nearest rival.
