TEddy VEt ChEckS Teddy vet checks are a godsend TEDDIES are precious and they deserve lots of love, care and special attention, just like the wildlife at Victoria’s three great zoos! That makes the zoos the ideal place for teddy vet checks. During the spring school holidays, kids are invited to meet the special teddy check teams and find out about the care the zoo animals receive, too!
The teams will be in action in Healesville Sanctuary’s Australian Wildlife Health Centre with plush wombats, giraffes and gorillas welcome, too. Pretend to be a vet, diagnose teddy, bandage them up and grab your teddy vet check certificate to take home. Teddies play a special role in our lives and the teddy vet checks are the perfect way to nurture
children’s kindness for other beings, whether human, animal or teddy bear! The complimentary teddy vet checks will be offered every day of the spring school holidays, from 11am to 3pm, at Healesville Sanctuary; and, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo, too. For more information, head to zoo.org.au/teddy.

Caring for wildlife of all persuasions THE team at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre located at Healesville Sanctuary provides care for animals of all shapes and sizes, from kangaroos and koalas to lizards and birds. The world-class facility opened in 2005 and is now the third largest wildlife hospital in Australia, treating more than 16,000 animals in need of special veterinary care since it opened. Sanctuary staff provide care for the injured or sick wildlife, too; including those that arrive on the doorstep, brought in by members of the public or wildlife shelters. Thousands of hours have been spent nursing and rehabilitating patients that have come into care over the years, with the Sanctuary working closely with volunteers and local carers to provide ongoing support
for injured and sick animals, as they go on their journey from rescue, treatment and recovery, to sometimes be released back into the wild. In addition, the hospital team conducts cutting-edge research into conservation medicine, clinical wildlife medicine and wildlife rehabilitation, which plays an important role in wildlife disease surveillance. Life Science Manager, Gerry Ross, recalls a variety of patients over the years. “From furry to feathered, we’ve seen all types of injured and sick animals brought into our care,” he said. “And we’ve definitely seen our fair share of amazing survival stories, too.” These are stories such as ‘Weginald’ the wedge-tailed eagle, who was shot and then hit by a car earlier this year. The wedge-tailed eagle was
found at Mount Cottrell and was brought into the Sanctuary for emergency surgery. “After vets repaired multiple broken bones and removed shrapnel from his wings, ‘Weginald’ was ordered to take six weeks’ rest before he was able to test his flying ability,” Mr Ross said. With many stories like ‘Weginald’s’, the centre has fast become a vital service for the Yarra Ranges and Victorian community. “We could not do our great work without the support of our wonderful colleagues in the veterinary and medical field, including human eye specialists, anaesthetists and orthopaedic surgeons and even veterinary dentists. “We’d really like to say thankyou to our local community for your support.”
EVERY day inside the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, kids can learn about what it takes to provide care for Aussie wildlife. The centre at Healesville Sanctuary is a unique experience, bringing the work of the vets from behind the scenes to the forefront so visitors can view their vets and nurses and work through glass windows and doors. At the centre of Sanctuary hospital is a specially designed kid’s vet hospital, ‘Future Vets’. Kids can dress up, play and become a hospital rescue team, saving plush toy patients, all while learning to care, be kind and empathetic for all living things, like animals. Boundaries between pretend and real become blurred as kids join in the daily action of the emergency room, observing surgery and meeting recovering patients all while operating on surgical tables, taking temperatures and bandaging limbs of plush toy wombats, owls and Tasmanian Devils. Most of all, ‘Future Vets’, an experience inspired by the work of their experts, highlights the incredible wildlife care and welfare taking place at the Sanctuary every day. Fast facts: Kids under 16 years old receive free entry to Healesville Sanctuary, for them and their teddies, during the Victorian spring school holidays! Please note: teddies must be accompanied by a human carer; The Australian Wildlife Health Centre at Healesville Sanctuary treats more than 1500 patients every year; Did you know? Swamp Wallabies have a very broad habitat range - they can be found here in Victoria right up to North Queensland; The Wallaby Paddock at Healesville Sanctuary is experiencing a baby boom - with nine joeys spotted popping their heads out of the pouch!

DURING the spring time, Healesville Sanctuary often sees an influx in orphaned or injured baby animals brought in for treatment at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre. At just seven months of age, a young Swamp Wallaby joey was found alive inside its mother’s pouch near Mount Evelyn by a passing motorist. The mother had been hit by a passing car and did not survive. The young joey, named Evelyn, was brought in to the Sanctuary and immediately treated for dehydration. Luckily, Evelyn didn’t have any injuries. But being a young joey, normally reliant on her mother, she would still require round-theclock care from her surrogate
THIS spring school holidays, Healesville Sanctuary is offering secondary school students the chance to become a vet for a day and work alongside the Sanctuary’s talented team of vets. Every year, the Australian Wildlife Health Centre at Healesville Sanctuary treats over 1500 injured or orphaned wild animals. You can help perform the daily duties alongside the vet team, including triage, diagnosis, health checks, rehabilitation and postmortem. Students will assist in caring for the animals at the Sanctuary, as well as helping to treat the many injured wildlife brought to the Australian Wildlife Health Centre. Frogs won’t croak By Jesse Graham ENVIRONMENT Minister Lily D’Ambrosio has praised the work of Healesville Sanctuary’s captive breeding program, with a record number of Corroboree Frog eggs laid in the last year. Ms D’Ambrosio, visiting the sanctuary on Wednesday, 7 September, announced that 592 Southern and 900 Northern Corroboree Frog eggs had been produced in the last year at the venue. The announcement came on National Threatened Species Day, and Ms D’Ambrosio praised the work of sanctuary and Zoos Victoria employees for the successful breeding season. “It’s really pleasing to announce that the very important, expert work that they’ve provided to support the Corroboree Frogs has been very, very successful,” she said. The amount of Corroboree Frog eggs produced at the sanctuary in the last year is more than the last seven years combined. “This will mean that these eggs will be released, will thrive and the importance of this fantastic, successful program really shows that when there is a dedication and a clear vision and support across a whole range of partners - backed up by Zoos Victoria, of course, the wonderful experts here at Healesville Sanctuary - we know that these threatened species have a really good, fighting chance of actually surviving,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. “Not just surviving, but thriving.” Healesville Sanctuary’s Life Sciences Manager Kim Miller said there were only 14 Southern Corroboree Frog males calling in the wild this breeding season. The animal is listed as critically endangered - one step away from extinct in the wild - and is threatened by the chytrid fungus. “So efforts to breed and release the animal are really critical for their survival,” she said.

Zoos Victoria CEO Jenny Gray
said that much of the work done at the sanctuary with threatened species was done in conjunction with volunteer or Friends Of groups - such as the Friends of Helmeted Honeyeater. “Nothing is done on our own - what we really need is the community of Victoria to stand behind threatened species,” she said. Ms Gray said children visiting the

sanctuary are “building connections with wildlife” and learning more about Australian and endangered animals. “They’re learning to care and they’re falling in love,” she said. “And once you’ve fallen in love with little black and yellow frogs, then you care about what happens to them and you grow up to be a volunteer who makes a difference.”
The announcement was followed by a release of captive-bred Helmeted Honeyeaters in the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve on Thursday, 8 September. Seven birds were released into the reserve, after undergoing preparation training at the sanctuary to avoid predators such as hawks.

EARLIER this year, I wrote to all three adjoining city council areas to Yarra Ranges Shire (Knox, Maroondah, Manningham) and urged them to give consideration to sharing in the recommended carving up and amalgamating parts of the shire. This is so the 30 per cent of private land and two per cent of council land will be shared between Manningham, Maroondah and Knox councils; and the 68 per cent Crown land be transferred back to the State Government, together with most of the corporate department staff and share of other department staff. In this scenario, no-one loses their job, but Crown land management cost and administration concerns will be shared by all of Victorians, not just Yarra Ranges Council. Whole wards and sitting councillors would be transferred into the adjoining councils. Assets would also be carved up according to a mixture of on a per capita and vicinity basis or those assets that are surplus to needs could be sold off and returned to ratepayers. It is unfortunate that the Yarra Ranges Council will waste $25 million for the new council chambers. The question of rising council taxes is of great concern to all ratepayers everywhere. One of the councils I contacted advised their council would be considering the proposal, but I have not heard back from the others. I urge you all to give serious consideration, as I will be pushing a reluctant LNP to revisit the question of amalgamations of inefficient councils. While not all perfect, the adjoining councils are showing far more fiscal responsibility with council tax collections than Yarra Ranges Shire, unfortunately. I will be asking council to identify all Crown land boundaries, which I assume is mostly in the O’Shanassy Ward and some in Ryrie Ward. I represent a group of landholders who strongly object to the proposed Planning Amendments C148, as they affect Green Wedge Zoned land. We will be presenting further proposals. Gilbert Boffa, Yarra Glen.
Send your letters to: editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au First, racism is subjective. It has no definite meaning beyond 51:26 of Australia’s Commonwealth Constitution, or when mimicking other nations such as the Unites States. In Australia, if we vote, we are literally racist. Let’s be objective. A range of anti-discrimination laws cover the government system but rarely reach lower levels; thus, a range of policies such as reconciliation. We are being educated in fundamental exchange relations. Self-doubt deludes people into believing others are a threat, so the answer is education? Education, however, is a waste without self-discipline. So the answer is jobs? The Aboriginal heritage of Victoria is the greatest untapped treasure of Australia but it is yet to yield, and therein is council’s greatest failure. What a scam! Council is yet to respond to the Victorian laws protecting the heritage in our district, so I am naturally suspicious about their current spin. Did you know Mount Donna Buang was named by Simon Wonga in 1863 via Colonel Anderson’s nephew, Joseph Panton? Or that the Dandenongs have a sacred relationship to fire and women? Did you know that the Wurundjeri did count, and were among the most valued and skilled workers at Yering and other enterprises? There was an Aboriginal Reserve at Woori Yallock, closed upon the gold rush? Did you know that Simon Wonga was a very successful entrepreneur during the gold
rush, and Coranderrk was sustained on that cash income and not the funding of government - that was spent on public servants! History repeats? Forgive my cynicism. Some of the local Kulin people are brilliant. Wonga was one of Victoria’s greatest diplomats. We should have had a Kulin Liaison at Council. Why didn’t we? Let’s not bury the strengths of our local traditional culture in yet another wave of low-level government spinning the latest fashions of exotica and be nice to the Indigenous as a solution to racism. Ratepayers must hold council accountable. Karen Grulke, Warburton.
Daffodil Day thanks I WISH to thank all the people of Healesville who supported the recent Daffodil Day Appeal. The two stalls located in the Main Street, and at The Walk, raised $3100 towards cancer research. Many of us have been affected personally by cancer, so it was humbling listening to people who are travelling this difficult journey; and for their carers who support loved ones and share the pain. We also rejoiced with those in the community who have recovered from cancer. My sincere thank you to the volunteers who gave so much of themselves, as well as their time to sell daffodils and merchandise. Beth Honeycombe, Co-ordinator, Daffodil Day, Healesville

New station opens By Jesse Graham YARRA Valley paramedics will be able to respond to emergencies quicker and have a place to relax in quiet moments, with the town’s new ambulance station opened on Friday 9 September. Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy and Ambulance Victoria CEO Tony Walker visited paramedics at the new station, on Westmount Road, on Friday afternoon for the official opening. Ms Hennessy said the new building, constructed over the last seven months, was “spectacular”, with four ambulance bays, three rest rooms, a training room, rest facilities and a fully-equipped kitchen. “We think that our paramedics deserve nothing less,” she said. “So we don’t expect your gratitude on this kind of capital - this is the kind of place we want paramedics to be able to come back to, to be able to get good clinical education, to be supported.” The building also features a me-
morial garden from the previous site, paying tribute to Robert Bland and Phillip Oakley who died when their ambulance rolled on the Black Spur in 2004. Ms Hennessy highlighted the mental health of paramedics and said the new amenities would give paramedics the ability to unwind and talk with their colleagues. “It’s important we’ve got space for paramedics to be trained well, but the most important thing is for paramedics to have a space where they can build collegiate culture and look after each other, because it’s one of the toughest jobs in the health sector,” she said. She said the culture at Ambulance Victoria was “not just about good performance and good response time and good clinical outcomes”, but about paramedics having “long, fulfilling and prosperous careers”. The station gives paramedics the ability to drive around the site, meaning ambulances will be able to

Ambulance Victoria group manager Frank Cummane said that he had worked in the former Healesville site about 20 years ago, and said the new building was “absolutely fantastic”.
“It’s a little bit different to the old one,” he said. Northern Victoria Region MP Jaclyn Symes said the station would make a “huge difference” for the paramedics, “who for far too long worked in cramped and out-dated conditions”.
Local actor’s biggest role yet By Jesse Graham
Travis Jeffery plays Sparrow McGee in the new film, Spin Out. 159179 Picture: CONTRIBUTED
A FORMER Healesville actor will feature on the silver screen this week, playing one of the main roles in the soon-to-be released romantic comedy, Spin Out. Travis Jeffery, who grew up in Healesville, will play the role of Sparrow McGee, best friend to the main characters, Billy and Lucy. The film was shot in Shepparton, and is set at a bachelors and spinsters ball in a rural country town, where Billy has one night to admit his feelings for Lucy before she moves away. Mr Jeffery said the film was shot in Shepparton last year and that the locals had been invited along to a community screening earlier in the month.
“They loved it,” he said. “I think Shepparton was a real test, because that’s who we made the film for - if they liked it, which they did ... others are going to love it.” He said his character was the “comic relief” to the romance between Billy and Lucy, who is naive and “got a heart of gold.” Mr Jeffery, 27, said the film was a change to some of his other roles in war films and shows - including the miniseries, Gallipoli - and was one of his biggest roles to date. He said he had an interest in acting for the last 12 years, performing in school plays and working with the Yarra Valley Youth Theatre Group while living in Healesville.
Since then, he moved to Sydney to pursue his career, and said he would like to keep working on Australian films. “I really love doing gritty, Aussie stuff,” he said. “If I can keep working in Australia – that would be amazing. (But) Hollywood’s a pretty big goal, I think.” The film premieres on 15 September, and will be screening at 200 cinemas across the country. “It’s just a nice, fun, fast country romance - it’s fun for the young and the young at heart,” Mr Jeffery said. “It’s a good mate film, it’s a good date film ... and you’ll leave with a smile on your face.”
Flipped truck blocks highway By Victoria Stone-Meadows A FLIPPED truck caused havoc on the Melba Highway just outside of Yarra Glen on Tuesday 6 September. Shortly before 6am, a large truck travelling towards Yarra Glen flipped and spilled about 20 metres of bark onto the road and into Lilyponds Creek. Senior Constable Grant Fereday from Lilydale Police said while the cause of the crash was unclear, the marks on the road showed what happened.
“The truck lost control of the trailer just before the bridge and jack-knifed,” he said. “The truck and trailer then pinballed into both sides of the bridge and continued to skid on its side about 100 metres through the bridge and up the road.” The bridge over the creek sustained some damage but engineers from VicRoads have said it was still safe to be used. A large amount of the spilled bark landed into the creek and SC
Fereday said Melbourne Water would come to the scene to assess the damage done to the creek. VicRoads closed the Melba Highway between the Yarra Glen roundabout and the McIntyre Lane intersection from about 7am. The driver of the truck sustained no injuries and SC Fereday said the crash could have been much worse. “We are all very lucky there was no-one coming the other way when the truck flipped,” he said. The road was expected to be
Briefly Hunt for flasher POLICE are on the hunt for a man who exposed himself to two women on the Warburton Trail late last month. The first incident occurred about 9.15am on Sunday 21 August, when a woman walking on the Warburton Trail, near David Road in Lilydale, was approached by the man. The man pulled down his tracksuit pants and exposed himself as he walked past the woman. Detective Senior Constable Ross McDonald from Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit said the victim gave a detailed description of the offender. “The victim described an unshaven Caucasian male of approximately 25 years of age with muscular athletic build, wearing a grey beanie and light grey tracksuit pants,” he said. The second incident occurred about 8.15am on Sunday 28 August, also on the Warburton Trail, this time near the Mount Evelyn Skate Park. The man exposed himself to a woman on a bicycle in the same manner as the previous incident, but this time from a distance of about two metres. The victim described the offender as about 175cm tall with dark hair and a rough, unshaven appearance. Police have released a digital composite of the man in the hope it leads to some one recognising him. Det Sen Const McDonald said that while the victims were not a fault, everyone should be wary while in public places. “All persons need to be vigilant when walking in public places and we urge people to be aware of their surrounds,” he said. Anyone with any information about these incidents is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Placing animals into foster care addresses many problems. It also helps Animal Aid cope with peak capacity demands during the kitten season. I am often asked the question regarding foster caring - ‘isn’t it too hard to give them up when it is time for an animal to be put up for adoption?’

In some instances, a foster carer/ family may become very attached to an animal and decide to adopt it themselves, but in most instances the reward is knowing that their efforts in caring for an animal in need have paid off and the animal is ready for its new loving home. And I can assure you that fostering can be very entertaining. In my household, we usually have a litter of kittens on the loose and they are always performing. Animal Aid is preparing itself for the kitten season and if history is anything to go by, we can expect over 900 kittens and pregnant cats to come into

CHOOSING to foster care an animal in need is both a rewarding and special experience. It is a big commitment, but the benefits of foster caring for both people and animals are unquestionable. Some of the animals that come through Animal Aid’s doors are not quite ready to go to a forever home and need the short-term love and care of a foster person or family. Some of those reasons include: The age of the animal: if under eight weeks of age, it is too young to be in a shelter environment or available for adoption. An older animal may have special needs that are better de-

Black Saturday medals By Victoria Stone-Meadows SOME 50 staff members from VicForests have been awarded National Emergency Medals for their bravery in fighting the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. These medals recognise an individual’s commitment and service to their communities during a nationally significant disaster. There are currently 33 employees at VicForests that are skilled in dealing with bushfires and they work closely with the CFA, DELWP and Parks Victoria to help minimise the risks that major bushfires pose. Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer at the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP), Matt Potter, presented the medals and acknowledged the recipients for their bravery. “The VicForests staff and contractors are not only skilled fire managers but they also bring with them exceptional safety practices and experience and knowledge of the forest they operate in every day in their jobs,” Mr Potter said. “On behalf of DELWP, I would like to thank all VicForests employees for their contributions in the 2009 fires and for their ongoing commitment and support to bushfire management in Victoria,” he said. CEO of VicForests Robert Green has praised all the staff members that put their community before their own lives that fateful summer seven years ago. “These are highly-skilled, courageous men and women that often put their lives on the line during a bushfire,” he said. “Our contractors also play a very critical role in these events by supplying vital equipment and invalu-

My gratitude goes to all of you.” The VicForests staff members,
past and present, that received a National Emergency Medal are: Paul Agterhuis, Jeremy Allen, James Anderson, Rebecca Bailey, Kim Barned, Judith Blakeney, Rhodey Bowman, Nicholas Bush, Peter Campbell, Dane Carozzi, Josh Chikuse, Marc Conte, Mark Crouch, Glenn Dooley, Patrick Dowling, Ben Drouyn, Peter Elms-Smith, Adam Green, Adam P. JUST weeks before the Yarra Ranges Council Elections, Mayor Jason Callanan has taken emergency sick leave to undergo surgery. On Thursday 1 September, Cr Callanan’s wife Lisa took to his public Facebook pages to notify his followers that he had become ill. “Cr Jason Callanan is on unexpected sick leave and will not be accessing this page for a couple of weeks,” the post said. It is unclear what illness had befallen Cr Callanan with Yarra Ranges Council remaining tightlipped about his condition. The Callanan family have requested privacy while Cr Callanan recovers, but Deputy Mayor Andrew Witlox thanked everyone for their concern. “We ask that the privacy of Jason and his family be respected during this time to enable him to rest and recover.” Yarra Ranges Council elections will take place in October this year, and Cr Witlox is confident Cr Callanan will have recovered by then. “Jason will be able to confirm his intentions as a future candidate once nominations close on 20 September.” Residents of Chandler Ward who have council-related matters for their ward representative are able to call his phone number, and will be directed to the relevant authority for their inquiry.

Take a stand for council By Jesse Graham
Katrina Reynolds, General Manager of Yarra Valley Estate. 159116
Picture: VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS
Sustained good effort By Victoria Stone-Meadows YARRA Valley Estate has been nominated for the Premier’s Sustainability Award for their latest environmental project. The Premier’s Sustainability Award is given to people or businesses that promote a low-carbon future through practices, projects and community engagement. The event and function centre in Dixons Creek won the award last year and are excited to be nominated again. The project that got them the nomination this year is a permaculture edible forest that has been built by staff at the centre as well as volunteers from the community. Yarra Valley Estate General Manager Katrina Reynolds said a lot of hard work had gone into the project and said being nominated for the award was a great success.
“We are hopeful all our hard work and dedication will be validated with this award,” she said. The edible forest project is a roughly one-acre patch of the estate’s grounds that has different sections for varying types of edible plants. “We have designed and constructed the forest with areas such as tea, barriers, sensory plants, wetlands, woodlands, Aussie bush tucker,” Ms Reynolds said. “It is open to the public and the community and is a great way for us to engage the community with the venue that is only really open for functions and events.” The project began in October 2015 and with the help of volunteers from Billanook College and Dixons Creek Landcare group, there are already about 1000 established edible plants. “Every plant in the forest is edible or medicinal and every part of the plant is used,” Ms Reynolds said.
Sustainability and environmentally friendly practises are a core focus for Yarra Valley Estate and the business is dedicated to continuing the growth of the edible forest. “Hopefully, in about four or five years we will have a large forest with a harvest in the summer and all items being used by our kitchen and the community with constant recycling and repurposing,” Ms Reynolds said. When announcing the finalists for the award Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said she was pleased to see Victorian businesses working for the environment. “I congratulate each finalist for their exemplary work to mitigate the impact of climate change and to reducing emissions,” she said. “It’s great to see such ingenuity and innovation in the way Victorians approach sustainability.”

WITH only one month left to the Yarra Ranges Council’s elections, it’s time for potential candidates to consider throwing their hat into the ring. The council’s election will be held from Tuesday, 4 October to Saturday, 21 October, and residents will choose their ward councillor to represent them for the coming four years. Those wishing to stand up as a councillor must nominate by noon on nomination day, 32 days before the election, and pay a $250 fee to the Victorian Electoral Commission. Yarra Ranges mayor Jason Callanan told the Mail earlier in the year that one of the most important things a candidate should have before starting is support - whether it be from family or friends around them. “If you don’t have family support in this, there’s no point doing it,” he said. “You don’t have that backing behind you, the four years will be very hard for you.” Cr Callanan said that potential candidates should be prepared to spend 20-30 hours per week on their work as a councillor if elected. “It’s not a part-time, recreational job,” he said. “My advice is that if you haven’t done any type of board experience in the past, go and do some of that. “You don’t have to be politically savvy in this job ... you just need to know how it works in there, how it works in that council room.” Cr Callanan said candidates should seek advice during their campaign, and that he had started from scratch with his, running a letter drop from the back of his family car - and falling out once along the way. “I had no idea - it was a real unknown, of ‘How do you do this?” he said. “I guess I was a bit lucky, that I had a few people that I could turn to, to find out some advice.
“Don’t be too proud to ask lots of questions.” He said that he had campaigned on roads, planning reform and projects that would impact families, such as playgrounds, footpaths and health. Though he said councillors are “loaded” with information once they are elected, he said sticking to the issues that dominated the campaign was a good start. “Some simple advice they gave me when I was about three, four weeks in by officers was, ‘What did you campaign for? Just stick to that, and work on that area ... the rest will follow after that’,” Cr Callanan said. Looking at the end of his first term in council, Cr Callanan said there had been “significant inroads” with planning, with the planning department merged with others, and that work had been done to get the council prepared for the State Government’s rate capping. “Hearing from Len Cox, who’s been in this game for years, saying this is the best budget he’s ever seen goes to show that the work that this council has put in to reduce those rates,” he said. He said the focus of his re-election campaign will be on fixing roads, using his knowledge from his time in council. The $250 candidacy fee is refunded if the candidate is elected, or receives four per cent or more of first preference votes. Nominations for the Yarra Ranges Council election must be made in person at the VEC election office at Healesville’s Community Link, 110 River Street, and open at 9am on Thursday, 15 September. Nominations close at noon on Tuesday, 20 September. Ballot forms will be sent to all enrolled voters between 4-6 October, and must be returned before 6pm on Friday, 21 October. A Coalition MP, Mr Smith used his casting vote as speaker to allow debate to continue which he said comes from tradition. “There are various principles that have been established throughout history on how a Speaker should use a casting vote ... and the principle in a tied vote, if it’s tied, there’s obviously not a majority to shut down debate,” he said. “The Speaker should use their vote to allow debate to continue - that’s what I did.” He said legislation to protect emergency services workers, proposed by Mr Turnbull in regards to the CFA and the Victorian Government’s EBA dispute, was introduced to Parliament on 31 August.

CASEY MP Tony Smith will sit in the Parliamentary Speaker’s chair until 2019, after being reelected to the role unopposed late last month. On Tuesday 30 August, the first sitting day of the new Parliament, Mr Smith was reappointed to the role of Speaker of the House of Representatives in Canberra. He was nominated for the role by Deakin MP Michael Sukkar, and seconded by Robertson MP Lucy Wicks and was escorted to the chair after no other nominations were put forward. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull congratulated Mr Smith on his “re-elevation” to the role, after being elected as speaker last year. “You have conducted this vitally important office with elegance, intellect, dignity, charm and impartiality,” he said. “This is a very robust chamber, as we all know, and sometimes in question time even people that are naturally very reasonable will become unreasonable and even intemperate. “But you, sir, have risen above that, and you project a calm that reflects so well on our house and so well on our democracy.” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek and Leader of the House Christopher Pyne all gave congratulations speeches to Mr Smith. Lovers of music and gin By Jesse Graham MUSIC and gin lovers will unite in Healesville later this month, when the Australian String Quartet performs in the intimate space of the Four Pillars Distillery. From 7pm on Sunday, 25 September, the quartet will perform pieces in the distillery as part of Close Quarters - performing classical music in an intimate space. Co-founder of Four Pillars Matt Jones said he approached the quartet for the show after meeting them last year. He said the quartet wanted to play in a chamber music style, where performances were held in small and intimate spaces. “It was music performed in really intimate spaces and really close, so you can really feel the music being played in the room,” Mr Jones said. “They loved the idea of bringing that intimacy back into the performances. “They were always looking out for cool, different places - at the time, we were literally just getting around to opening up the distillery in Healesville. It just seemed like a really, really natural fit.” The performance will run through until 9pm, and the distillery will have room for

The Australian String Quartet will perform at Four Pillars on Picture: CONTRIBUTED 25 September. 159102 70 attendees. Mr Jones said the distillery would be open late and visitors would be able to have a chat to the distillers and possibly the musicians while enjoying a drink. “If this goes well, having different styles of music going on in the venue and letting people
enjoy a drink with something different going on in the background is something we’d like to be doing more of,” he said. Tickets to the show are $25 at the door, 2A Old Lilydale Road, Healesville, or at www. trybooking.com/MUSJ.

BUDDING Upper Yarra artists are being called on to capture a face from their community for an inaugural portraiture exhibition in Warburton. Face2Face is an exhibition being run from the end of October to the end of November, where paintings, drawings and collages of people from the Upper Yarra area will be displayed in shop windows in Warburton. Upper Yarra Community Enterprise community development worker Suyin Chan said that participants had to fill out a registration form and pay a $5 entry fee, and would receive a canvas from the Waterwheel Information Centre. From there, artists will have until 20 October to complete their portrait and write a short
piece about them - at the end of the month, all the entries will be hung throughout town. “It’s based on Not the Archies, over in Healesville,” Ms Chan said. “We’re just doing pretty much the same format - we’re saying paint someone that you admire, or someone in the community you have respect for. “We’re just going to display them - there’re no prizes, there’s no judging or anything like that. It’s just fun to have a street exhibition.” The Upper Yarra Community Enterprise is supporting the exhibition, and Ms Chan said most of the shops in town had agreed to display the portraits. “Virtually every shop has come on board with it, which his great,” she said.
“So that helps to encourage participation ... but also, hopefully, it’ll draw people into the shops as well.” She said she hoped to get 100 entries in the exhibition, and that while the exhibition is focused on the Upper Yarra, people with a connection to the area painting a local will be accepted. “If you live in the area, great, or if you have an association with the area, great - or a portrait of someone in the area,” Ms Chan said. “It’s the first time we’re trying it here - we don’t know what response we’ll get, but we hope it’ll be a good one and we can continue doing it every year.” For more information, call 5966 9028 or email face2facewarburton@gmail.com
You’ll feel the full horror Don’t Breathe (MA15+) Starring Stephen Lang, Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette
BRIDGET JONES’S BABY
PETE’S DRAGON
THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK: THE TOURING YEARS FOR SIX DAYS ONLY - DAILY FROM SEPTEMBER 16 TO SEPTEMBER 21 AT 11.30AM & 6.30PM
DON'T Breathe is one of the best mainstream horror movies of the year. Three small-time Detroit crooks attempt to rob the home of an old blind man. Little do they know, the Blind Man (Stephen Lang) is an unhinged Gulf War veteran, and he proceeds to hunt them mercilessly throughout his house. Don’t Breathe achieves a level of realism and nail-biting
suspense rarely seen in modern horror. The characters are welldeveloped, the dialogue feels natural and there is enough nuance for you to reasonably sympathise and side with either the robbers or the Blind Man. Lang is terrifying as the Blind Man. With a formidable, prowling presence, the Blind Man is deadly despite his blindness, and possesses a distinct advantage on his home turf. This is also a film that humanises its disabled antagonist; the Blind Man is a violent, vindic-
tive man who just happens to be blind. While Don’t Breathe’s cinematography is starkly beautiful, director Fede Alvarez makes evocative, masterful use of eerie sound effects, plot-important objects and set geography - which all relate to senses the Blind Man still has - to fully immerse us in the claustrophobic setting and ramp up the suspense. Brutal and unrelentingly tense, Don’t Breathe is a truly phenomenal horror film. Seth Lukas Hynes

Firing up for the season REAL-LIFE examples and personal stories will help residents plan for the coming bushfire season at this year’s Living with Bushfire Community Conference in Lilydale on 7 and 8 October. Industry experts - including Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, fire researcher Justin Leonard, and indigenous fire land management specialist Victor Steffenson - will present at this third annual conference. The conference will help residents get prepared by covering:
research on survival behav· New iours in bushfires; on personal resilience · Building for bushfire preparedness; fire agencies are doing for · What fire and land management; with like-minded · Networking people; to understand bushfire · Scenarios risk; · What happens after the fire event.
Hear from fire ecologists and community emergency groups to gain valuable and practical knowledge about living with bushfire.
Yarra Ranges Council Deputy Mayor Andrew Witlox stressed the importance of this conference especially for residents living in bushfire-prone regions. “Both days give residents the chance to gain insights, ask questions and build on their existing knowledge while networking with people living in similar areas,” he said. “The reality is that the Australian landscape will experience bushfires, with us all sharing the responsibility for our community’s and our own safety.
“With registrations now open for the annual Living with Bushfire Community Conference, I encourage all residents to attend to get the latest data and research into bushfire risk and behavior. “As we head into the warmer months, the conference is a timely reminder for us all to gain a greater understanding of bushfire in Victoria.” Register online today or check out the program: www.boxhill.edu. au/bushfireconference2016/.

Countback goes McMath’s way
A COLD, dreary morning greeted athletes at Lillydale Lake parkrun on Saturday morning. The weather didn’t improve much as the Yarra Ranges Athletics club held a community information morning immediately after the park run. Fortunately, the weather did not deter many members, and those seeking more information about the fun of athletics ... run, jump, throw! A fun morning of questions, games, races and prizes kept everybody entertained. If you missed the morning, or want to know more, visit the all new and improved website at www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au. The next club event is Tan relays on Saturday, a fantastic climax to the Athletics Victoria XCR season.
WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY STROKE and M. McGrann ‘bag day’ - The daily winner was Andrew McMath with a great Nett 70 on a countback. Andrew has become a consistent player over winter - a much-deserved win. Runner-up was the always consistent Neil Leckerby also with 70. Balls went down to 71 only. The NTP winners on the day were Mario De Vincentis (3rd), Mike Dobson (10th) and to Ossie McClay (12th). SATURDAY Stableford - The winner was Wayne Kempton, with a well-compiled 38 points. This is a sure sign that Wayne is returning to the excellent form he displayed before some health issues slowed him down. Welcome back ‘Shaggi’! The daily runnerup was Barry Maltman, just 1 point behind on 37. The ball rundown went down to 34. The list of NTP winners were as follows: Hatty on the 3rd, Shaggi (5th), Barry Maltman ( 9th), Geoff Fall (12th) and Wayne-Kempton on the 15th.

Motoring Watch out for the critters THE Yarra Ranges local government area has ranked fifth in the state for insurance claims related to collisions between motor vehicles and animals, according to the RACV. The RACV recorded 172 claims for the 2016 financial year in the Yarra Ranges, an increase of 29 claims on the previous year. The statistics come as the RACV recorded rises in many regions within Victoria, with Greater Bendigo (413 claims) and Macedon Ranges (307 claims) topping the list. In Victoria, the animals most commonly associated with collisions were kangaroos (4370 claims), wombats (240 claims), dogs (218 claims) and deer (76 claims). Others in the list include cattle, cats, foxes, koalas and horses. Across Victoria, the frequency and cost of accidents involving animals increased more than five per cent in 2015-'16. RACV received nearly 15 animal collision insurance claims each day in the last financial year and paid out more than $24 million to members involved in more than 5300 animal collisions. The average cost of claims was 2.1 per cent higher than the previous year. Kangaroos were involved in 82 per cent of all animal collisions resulting in an RACV claim. RACV General Manager Motor
The Yarra Ranges is a hot-spot for collisions between vehicles and animals. 158943 Insurance, Mark Geraghty, said most animal collisions happened near dawn and after dusk. “For kangaroos, the greatest risk periods are about 6am and 6pm,” he said. “Collisions with wombats peak about 9pm and incidents involving dogs are fairly evenly spread throughout the day from 8am to 10pm,” he said.
RACV’s community partner Wildlife Victoria is helping to create awareness of how to live sustainably with wildlife. Chief Executive Officer, Karen Masson, said that kangaroos and other animals will often feed beside roads, where the grass tends to be fresher from water run-off. “These areas are attractive to wildlife but it unfortunately creates a
heightened risk for the animals and for road users, so it’s important to always be on the lookout for them,” she said. Mr Geraghty said that while animal collisions could happen at any time during the year, the number of collisions involving kangaroos increased in autumn while 30 per cent of wombat accidents occurred in winter. RACV Insurance received animal collision claims from every Victorian
municipality. Mr Geraghty said motorists should always drive at a speed suitable for the conditions and remember that rapidly expanding urban areas increasingly bring us into contact with wildlife. Motorists are advised to call 1300 094 535 to report injured or sick native animals to Wildlife Victoria, which can treat injured animals.

Toyota sales to the top the same month last year - the company’s best August apart from an extraordinary 2007 result. August was the second consecutive month in which Toyota sold more than twice as many new vehicles as any other brand. Corolla, including the new hybrid variant, was the nation’s topselling vehicle for the month with dealers distributing 3554 hatches and sedans, an increase of 16.5 per cent compared with a year earlier. HiLux was a close second with 3311 deliveries - a dramatic improvement on the corresponding
month last year when the previous generation model was in run-out. These two acclaimed models have also grabbed the sales ‘quinella’ so far in 2016, although the positions are reversed with HiLux having its nose in front by fewer than 100 units as Australia’s bestseller - 27,618 to 27,525 sales. So far this year, Toyota dealers have delivered 138,459 vehicles - a gain of 4.1 per cent compared with the same period last year and almost 60,000 vehicles ahead of its nearest rival.
