PARENTS of Warwick State High School students are set to be hit with costs of up to $1000 per student next year to supply them with laptop computers as part of a major IT in education push. Education Queensland says the Bring Your Own Device or BYOx program is “optional” but Warwick SHS will offer hire deals of schoolowned laptops in a bid to bring all students from Years 8 to 12 into the Computers for Students initiative. As well as the purchase or hire cost of the laptops themselves, parents may also be hit with an annual levy to help fund the cost of cyber-security and lockers. While Warwick SHS and other high schools in the region already have similar schemes in place for mostly year 10, 11 and 12 students, the BYOx drive is aimed at bringing the entire Warwick SHS student body into the laptop loop. A spokeswoman for Education Queensland said the decision to implement BYOx is made “at a local level by principals in consultation with their school communities”. “Bring Your Own device is a pathway supporting the delivery of 21st century learning, recognising the demand for seamless movement between school, work, home and play,” the spokeswoman said. “State schools who choose to adopt the program work with individual families to ensure that any child who does not have their own device is not disadvantaged in accessing the curriculum. “Most schools have a number of devices which are available in classrooms for use by students who do not have a personal device.” The spokeswoman said Warwick SHS had purchased 300 laptops for students to hire at the start of the first term in 2017. “Parents who have questions or concerns about BYOx programs in their school are encouraged to speak with their child’s school principal. New hands on deck: Free Times new editor Jeremy Sollars, left, and Feature Advertising Sales Executive Natasha Sheahan, right, with Sales Executive Bryan Pask.

New faces at Times IT’S exciting times at the Southern Free Times with newlyappointed sales staff members and a very experienced editor to continue the growth of your free weekly newspaper. Group Advertising Manager Phill Le Petit said new editor Jeremy Sollars commenced with the Southern Free Times this week and brings a wealth of experience in journalism combined with local knowledge to the paper. Sales staff Judy Abernethy of Killarney and Warwick’s Natasha Sheahan complement current sales team members Bryan Pask and Lisa Crouch.

Mr Le Petit said it was gratifying to work within the everchanging newspaper landscape with a truly independent newspaper organisation, the Star News Group, which was established in Victoria in 1909. “Believe me when I say that print media is not dead, especially in regional areas as we deliver hyper-local content and a means by which to create and engage in conversation,” Mr Le Petit said. “We will strive to ensure our paper maintains its relevance and importance to the local Southern Downs community it serves. “We are the voice of the peo-

ple and the champion of grievances and concerns and we will continue to play that role. “Congratulations to Jeremy, Judy and Natasha on their appointments and I am confident the Southern Free Times will continue to deliver local news in the printed form and via constant updates on our website and social media for many years to come.” Got a story, tip or feedback on what you’d like to see in the Free Times? POLICE executed a number of search warrants on premises in the Stanthorpe area last Tuesday resulting in the location of drugs and the charging of a number of persons. A 32-year-old woman from Sawmill Road at The Summit was charged with possessing a dangerous drug after a quantity of amphetamines were located at the address. A 39-year-old man from Dalcouth Road faces two charges after failing to properly dispose of a used syringe and also unlawfully using a controlled substance. A search warrant on premises in Tennant Road, The Summit resulted in the location of a quantity of cannabis and smoking utensils resulting in the 35-year-old male resident being charged accordingly. A warrant executed at Margetts Street, Wallangarra, resulted in the location of an ‘ice’ pipe and other drug paraphernalia. Two persons at the address are expected to be charged with drug offences. Another address, also in Margetts Street, was searched with a quantity of cannabis and smoking utensils being located. A 22-year-old male was drug diverted as a result. At around noon on Saturday, police intercepted a sedan in Pierpoint Street, Stanthorpe, with the 39-year-old driver testing positive to drugs and being subsequently charged with drug driving.

Disturbance outside hotel POLICE were forced to intervene in a disturbance outside the Central Hotel at about 12.45am on Sunday. A 47-year-old man had been evicted from the hotel by security staff but returned a short time later and became violent necessitating police to produce a taser. At this time the offender resisted and was arrested by police for committing a public nuisance offence. At 2.30am police again attended outside the Central Hotel in relation to a disturbance, giving a move-on direction to a 23-year-old male. The man returned to the area a short time later and was charged by police with disobeying the moveon direction given earlier. He was in the process of being transported to a nearby address when police observed another male kicking over a rubbish bin in the street resulting in the 23-yearold being issued with a $365 ticket for public nuisance. They shall reap what they mow

Village eyes future By Jeremy Sollars THE picturesque village of Yangan just east of Warwick needs its locals to step up to the plate and help to reinvigorate its Progress Association. The group was formed in 2010 by a group of Yangan folk who decided to band together to do some good in the close-knit community near the foot of the Great Dividing Range. Current president Colin Pope is in his second stint as president of the Yangan Progress Association and is ready to hand over the reins to someone new with new ideas and plenty of energy. The group also needs other committee members and more support in general in order for it to remain viable. Among the Yangan Progress Association’s past achievements are the creation and placement of the two sandstone welcome signs at the entrances to the village, raising money for families in need of help after ill health or accidents, raising funds

for the upkeep of the tennis club and sports ground and to help support the Yangan State School Parents and Citizens Association. Mr Pope said attendance at a couple of recent scheduled annual general meetings had been below the nine people required to form a quorum. The next meeting is planned for 7pm on Monday 19 September at the Yangan Tennis Club rooms. “We need the correct number in attendance to be able to hold a meeting as we are an incorporated body,” Mr Pope explained. “Our community stands to lose out as our association has been very involved in fundraising and other local projects. “All we are asking as far as meetings is an hour once a month - plus some time and some input. “It’s about allowing the association to keep doing something positive for the community.” Other projects in which the Yangan

VOLUNTEERS spent Tuesday evening busily mowing the Stanthorpe Sports Association’s McGlew Street ovals ahead of a major junior rugby league carnival this weekend. The ovals had been the source of some controversy after the Southern Downs Regional Council announced it would be reducing its mowing to the minimum for parks and gardens in the region. The Stanthorpe Sports Association (SSA) has leased the ovals from the council for decades and the former Stanthorpe Shire regularly did the mowing. However, since amalgamation sports field maintenance has been a major issue across the region with clubs in Warwick doing all their own mowing. Councillors last week suggested the SSA might have to source volunteer labour to mow the ovals if and when necessary and that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night when more than 20 volunteers showed up. SSA president Colin Britton told the Free Times on Wednesday that there were numerous ride-on mowers and whipper snippers in action to bring the fields up to standard for this weekend’s junior rugby league Mustangs Under 12 Challenge. “We were pretty overwhelmed by the support from the community,” Mr Britton said. “We had people there who didn’t even have a connection to sport. “Obviously the rugby league community are pretty happy with the result. This weekend is a major carnival.” Mr Britton said the grass wasn’t long enough this week to meet the Southern Downs Regional Council’s requirements. The SSA had initially planned to mow the fields on Wednesday but brought the working bee forward to Tuesday because rain was forecast for the rest of this week.

Major firey upgrade FIVE years of hard fund-raising work have paid off for the Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade, with major extensions officially unveiled at the weekend. Brigade First Officer Rob Hockings said money raised from the Backburners Ball and donations had enabled the brigade to construct toilet and shower facilities, a secure storeroom and most importantly a training room which could double as an incident co-ordination room for wider emergency services. “We have had a lot of support from the community and local businesses and tradespeople, so it’s been a real community effort,” Mr Hockings said. “Our members range from 18 up to 76, and we have both male and female frontline firefighters and support personnel. “We train once a month and we’ve been doing controlled burns with local landholders - we’re feeling very well prepared for the summer season.”

Flooding fears objections entertained Many opine that the new building should be constructed on concrete pillars or pylons which they contend would allow floodwaters to pass more easily and cause less property damage. While the Southern Downs Regional Council says it has put this option to Bunnings, it is required under planning laws to assess the application currently in front of it which is to fill the site. Director of Engineering Services Peter See said the council had passed on the suggestion to the applicant as a “comment”. “However, council must still continue with the application as lodged, which is for filling,” Mr See said. The situation is made trickier with a previous approval given to

By Jeremy Sollars RESIDENTS and business operators concerned about the impact on flooding of a proposed new Bunnings outlet in Warwick have until the end of tomorrow to lodge formal objections. The hardware giant is planning to move from its current Palmerin Street digs to a vacant site at the corner of Canning and Condamine streets on the other side of the highway. But the proposal has drawn fire from other businesses and landowners to the east of Albion Street in the Condamine River flood zone, with fears that fill planned for the site could dramatically alter and worsen the flow of water during future floods.

another applicant, who did not proceed with the site, having ticked off the filling method. The Free Times contacted Bunnings to ask if they would assess the feasibility of the concrete pylon option. Andrew Marks, Bunnings’ general manager of property, said the development application submitted by Bunnings “is consistent with the existing bulky goods approval for the site, which includes the method of filling”. “The development application takes into account the findings and recommendations of the Jacobs Consulting report which was commissioned by council,” Mr Marks said. “This development is in the very

early stages of planning, and we look forward to continuing to work with authorities throughout the process to bring jobs, investment and an even wider range of home improvement and outdoor living products to the Warwick community.” Mr Marks said the investment of the new Bunnings would be over $16 million, with more than 140 jobs in the construction phase and around 90 jobs, with around 50 of those over and above the current Warwick Bunnings team. Submissions to the council close at 5pm tomorrow, Friday 16 September. Hand deliver submissions to the customer service counter at the council headquarters on Fitzroy Street, or email to mail@sdrc.qld. gov.au

In brief Driver fights for life THE critically injured driver of a sedan which collided with a semi-trailer near Cunninghams Gap is still fighting for his life in hospital. Police said investigations are ongoing, but it is understood that witnesses have said his vehicle veered onto the wrong side of the highway and into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer around 1.30pm on Monday. The 34-year-old driver of the sedan was flown by LifeFlight to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital with critical head and other injuries. A police spokesman said the man was in a serious but stable condition. The driver of the semi-trailer was uninjured in the accident. It is not clear at this stage when police may be able to speak with the driver of the sedan about the circumstances leading up to the collision. Emergency services attended the scene of the smash until about 10.30pm on Monday night when the Cunningham Highway was finally re-opened.

Secret shower camera filming charges A MAN charged over the alleged use of a secret camera to film showering nurses at Stanthorpe Hospital nurses’ quarters has appeared in the Warwick Magistrates’ Court. Peter Daniel McLellan, 42, is alleged to have installed the camera above various shower cubicles using velcro dots, after purchasing the camera online last November. Police allege McLellan, who was working as a gardener at the hospital, operated the camera via a remote control and stored recordings on a memory card, with the offences said to have occurred during February and March this year. It will also be alleged the device was discovered by a cleaner who alerted hospital authorities. McLellan is next due to appear in court on October and is currently on bail.

Bigger issue

IT IS without any sense of pleasure I must now acknowledge the leader of the political party I support, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull must be seen as a hypocrite. Here is a man who proudly claims to be a Christian and speaks of prayers for those in difficult circumstances and at the same time voices support for moves to change the laws of God dealing with marriage permitting what is referred to as ‘same-sex marriage’. If Malcolm Turnbull be genuine in any claim to hold Christian values, he must accept there will be a Day of Judgement and on that day each of us being accountable for our actions will be obliged to give an account of our stewardship. Lou Rowan, Yangan.

THE proposed Emu Swamp Dam is not just a Stanthorpe/Granite Belt issue, it affects all ratepayers in the region, even those who do not have town water. The reported $4 million spent so far on reports, inquiries and investigations into this proposal have resulted in negative findings on major aspects of the Emu Swamp Dam. Now our council is expecting the results of yet another report. The total cost for the construction for urban and irrigation supply will be over $100 million, as well as ongoing maintenance expenses met by all ratepayers. In an SDRC handout presented at an SDRC public meeting held in Stanthorpe on 11 October 2011 for an Emu Swamp Dam urban supply, only three scenarios were listed for estimated annual pumping costs, extra to rates already charged, unless a subsidy was available: 1. Costs to be met by Stanthorpe connections alone - $1,680. 2. Costs to be met by Stanthorpe and Warwick connections - $461. 3. Costs paid for by all SDRC connections $395. How could our elected representatives agree to impose any of the above costs on ratepayers, especially since there are other options to be considered for the provision of a secure urban water supply for Stanthorpe? In the lead-up to the recent local government elections many ratepayers expressed deep concern regarding our council’s financial situation. Why would our elected representatives even consider this proposal to the benefit of a smaller number of irrigators at the expense of all ratepayers? Please read the Report by Rob Simcocks “Emu Swamp Dam - Not the Solution” available on Granitenet - or robsimcocks@gmail.com Carol Parkinson, Stanthorpe.

IN State View (SFT, 8 September) Mr Springborg stated a “classic example of Parliament doing what is expected of it protecting the rights and liberties of Queenslanders” with regard to tree clearing laws. The rights and liberties of anyone who purchased house blocks without being given the customary warnings that a Chinese owned group of coal mines to the east and the 800,000-chicken hatchery was about to emerge in close proximity as part of Allora’s immediate future, thanks to council and the Federal Government, aligned with the State Government of Queensland’s remarkable rights and liberties laws, is breath-taking. As Oakey reels from the ruination by a government that has destroyed their town and now dithers about what to do, Allora stands as a tiny town of no value that could well follow suit. Surely no government, local or state, would risk the rights and liberties of another Queensland town. Melba Morris, Allora.

Water services in the pipeline WARREGO Water Services has finally brought some much-needed activity to a long-dormant corner on the main highway through Warwick. The business has just opened its doors at the former Saddlery 1 premises at the corner of Albion and Grafton streets and is ready and willing to service the water needs of local producers and others. With spring here and a promising weather forecast for the coming days it’s timely to turn attention to irrigation needs and other requirements to

deliver valuable water to where it’s needed most. Co-owner Chris Green said while the signage was yet to arrive for the firm’s new premises, locals could be assured the business was well and truly open. “We are in a prime location here and we are really excited about the generous amount of sales and display space we have,” Mr Green said. “It’s a great showroom area and we are now also in the process of

setting up our workshop within the premises.” Warrego Water Services provide products and services to agricultural, domestic and industrial customers Australia wide and deals with all aspects of pumping, irrigation and water filtration from all the major manufacturers. Warrego Water Services offers various irrigation methods such as flood irrigation, broad acre irrigators including centre pivots, lateral move, trickle, spray lines, travelling

irrigators, sub-surface and home irrigation. Filtration systems for household, agriculture and industrial applications are also catered for. Large diameter piping, whether it be PVC or steel, is specialised at Warrego Water Services. For PVC applications they use an electrofusion welder to join 20m lengths into one continuous length of pipe to the customer’s exact specifications.

With water being the community’s most precious asset, irrigation systems should be designed to give the most efficient distribution of available water. Warrego Water Services can design, supply and install any pumping and irrigation system required and provide a free no-obligation on-site quote. Call in and see Chris Green, a Killarney local, at the corner of Albion and Grafton streets for all water needs.

Casey’s tips

Just pig out on the craic FOR those who like singing their hearts out, clapping their hands, stamping their feet, dancing like a loon or just enjoying some good craic, Murphy’s Pigs tick all the boxes. The Brisbane-based Celtic group is a headline act at this year’s Bony Mountain Folk Festival which kicks off on Friday. A big band with a big sound, Murphy’s Pigs are infectiously entertaining and masters of organised chaos on stage. They’re playing on the Friday night and entry is $20 per person. An award winning Celtic ensemble renowned for its passion, energy and irreverence, this unique band lives and breathes Celtic rock and traditional folk, playing songs and tunes from all points around the Celtic Sea. In a magical instant, Murphy’s Pigs drag listeners headfirst into their world of rugged mountains, stormy oceans, fearsome battles, unrequited love and, of course, a drop or two of the whiskey. There is no sacred ground here. Influences from folk, rock, jazz, country and blues weave through a rich musical tapestry of dynamic instrumentation and powerful vocal harmonies. Guitars, bass, fiddle, whistles, bagpipes, banjos, drums, bodhran (Celtic drum), percussion, accordion, keyboard, mandolin, the kitchen sink and nine male vocalists combine to create an exciting, distinctive and unforgettable sound. Murphy’s Pigs derive their influences from the folk revival groups of

★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 Rivals at the workplace may be changing tactics - don’t try to beat them at their own game. Long term relationships should not be taken for granted. Make an effort to enhance this friendship. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 Hobbies are accented as a diverting and perhaps profitable outlet for your energy. Weigh pros and cons objectively as you approach a career or academic crossroad. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Financial complications and romantic entanglements get the week off to a hectic start, but the trend snaps by Friday. A financial bonanza and a romantic celebration may reverse the situation. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Children can influence your major decisions this week. Be aware of the changing moods of friends. An out of town shopping spree or travel plan proves a diverting tonic. LEO—July 23-August 22 Don’t be subtle when making requests - you can’t expect anyone to be reading your mind. After a weak start, a happy new friendship is ready for takeoff. A colleague is willing to compromise. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Curiosity becomes increasingly active, and with good reason. Stay alert especially to changing trends in the neighbourhood. If seeking advice or information, visit top specialists. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 You could be wearing many hats during a week that accents versatility and new responsibilities. A favour seeking acquaintance tries a new strategy. It’s best to follow your instincts. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 This is a great week to sharpen those rusty skills and renew old business contacts. In romance, it’s your turn to make the first and second moves. Be quick to recognize your loved one’s achievements. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 On the homefront, tiffs seem a way of life so the Sagittarius special brand of diplomacy is crucial. The accent should be on exercise and health, no matter how busy your are. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Marvellous buying and selling opportunities abound through this week. Meditation and philosophical conversations should help you formulate ideas. Insignificant issues become controversial. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 The emphasis is on revision. Ideas and plans can change several times through the week. Perception skills seem uncanny. In romance, take the initiative - even if it isn’t your turn. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Your management skills are impressive, but don’t give instructions all the time. A friend’s romantic success may upset your own week - your patience and humour will help you through. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are down-to-earth and dependable and your taste is inspiring. On the flip side, you are stubborn and self indulgent. Good companionship and surprise travel could highlight nearer the end of this year or early in the new year. You may be less successful at reaching short term goals than planning long term ones.

Art is content-rich Casey’s tips

SEVEN local Southern Down artists have combined for the two new exhibitions starting at the Warwick Art Gallery this month. Art Gallery director Karina Devine said the two exhibitions were rich in content and technique. Got Mittens Too and Confluence officially open on Friday, and will be on display until late October. “Got Mittens Too is Peter Osborn’s first solo exhibition at Warwick Art Gallery. Peter has a background in structural engineering design and has studied visual arts at the University of Southern Queensland,” Karina said. “His works include ceramic figurative sculpture and watercolour illustration. “The 100-year commemoration of the Anzac involvement in World War I became a personal journey when he read the diary his grandfather wrote while on service at the Western Front." This brief document provided many poignant images of the conflict and devastating loss of life, according to Peter. “I became interested in my grandfather’s WWI experiences after my uncle sent me a scanned copy of his diary from that time,” Peter said. “He arrived in France in mid 1916 as a sapper with the 13th brigade of the 4th Division AIF, and somehow survived, particularly the third battle of Ypres where his younger brother was killed. “The title of the exhibit Go Mittens Too comes from an anecdote related by my grandfather when, after the German soldiers raised a banner proclaiming, “Gott mit uns” (God is with us), the Allies responded with a banner “Got mittens too”.” In addition to the exhibition, Pe-

The Line by Peter Osborn. Participating artists experimented with a variety of individual methods of printmaking based on traditional techniques, while exploring the broad concept of resilience. “The six artists, all based on the Southern Downs except for Dorothy Haig who has recently moved to Maleny, have created beautiful printed works on fabric that together take a timely look, on many levels,

ter has designed a catalogue book featuring excerpts from the diary, text and images from the exhibitions. The book is available from the Gallery during the exhibition. She said the second exhibition, Confluence, was a collaborative textile landscape that was conceived during a workshop at Jumpers and Jazz in July in 2015 facilitated by textile artist, Dorothy Haig.

at the resilience of Outback Australia,” Karina said. Got Mittens Too and Confluence will be on display from Thursday 15 September until Sunday 28 October 2016. The artists will be at the official opening on Friday 16 September at 6.30pm. This is a free event, and anyone is welcome but rsvp to the gallery on 07 46610434.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Connecting people with the sport they love.

AFL thrives in NRL domain The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

THE Boffins at NRL headquarters were given plenty to think about last weekend when the AFL dominated the Sydney sporting landscape. In front of a crowd of 60,000 at Olympic park, the new kids on the block the GWS Giants showed they are genuine flag contenders this season when they defeated big brother the Sydney Swans. They are now one win from what would be an historic grand final. GWS are a great success story like much the AFL undertake the plan to put a second team in Sydney and win the hearts and minds of fans in NRL heartland was well-planned, well-executed and well-funded unlike the soap opera the NRL has become. The NRL appears to be lurching from scandal to scandal. At a time when we should be focused on the finals, we have match-fixing allegations, Andrew Fifita’s bizarre support for a one-punch killer, the Hayne plane allegedly drifting of course with some unsavoury characters and egg throwing in NQ. Let’s not forget the on field debacles we see every week as the Refs and the answer to everyone’s problems the “Bunker” make astounding decisions. All of that of course follows the circus that was Parramatta all season. Rugby League has survived for over 100 years and is not about to curl up and die, but it is about time those at the helm started to show something other than apathy for the state of the game and listen to stakeholders not just at the top of the tree either. All the way down to grassroots. Strangely, the AFL and GWS don’t see themselves at war with rugby league. I guess they don’t need to be when the NRL is so good at shooting itself in the foot. League is at war with itself. - Casey 95 REASONS TO CELEBRATE ON Wednesday, one of Stanthorpe’s treasures - Enid Hamilton celebrated her 95th birthday. This remarkable lady is not only well known in tennis and golf circles in the region, but is widely acknowledged as one of the district’s leading historians. If you need to know when where and how it happened, then Enid is your lady. If she doesn’t know the answer, you can rest assured she will sniff out the all the details. Family and friends helped Enid celebrate at Stanthorpe Museum. - Happy Birthday Enid GRANDFINAL SPOTS BOOKED THE Warwick Cowboys booked their place in the TRL A grade grand final on Sunday after a gutsy 32-20 win over Highfields in the Preliminary final. After being denied a saloon passage to the grand final by Pittsworth the previous week, the Cowboys put first points on the board with a try to Sam Broomhall after 15 minutes of play. Highfields hit back shortly after but two spectacular length of the fields tries pushed the Cowboys out to a 16-6 lead. The Eagles showed plenty of determination and closed the gap to 16-10 after Sean Hamel scored. The Cowboys replied in kind when fullback Craig Donn regathered his own grubber to take the score 22-10 in the Cowboys

The Eagles came back with two late tries but with a grand final appearance in their sights, the Cowboys were not going to be denied. Captain Dylan Galloway led from the front and was well supported by Paul Cantwell, Joe Fuimaono and Luke Brosnan. The Cowboys now have the opportunity to win their first TRL grand final since 1988. They take on Pittsworth on Sunday at Clive Berghoffer Oval in what is sure to be an enthralling game. The performance of both teams has been outstanding this season, and each deserves their place in the grand final. With everything on the line on Sunday, the Cowboys will be keen to reverse the tables after they were defeated by the Dane’s two weeks ago. By their own admission their defence was much better against Highfields and they will need to build on that to lift the trophy on Sunday. The Cowboys young guns also made sure it will be a big weekend when they booked their place in the Under-18 grand final with a win over Pittsworth in their Preliminary final. In thriller scores, they were locked at 18-all at half time. The arm wrestle continued in the second half and was finally broken when Cowboys front tower Matt Titcomb scored to give his side 24-18 lead. With two minutes left on the clock, Pittsworth fullback Dominic Briggs scored and when Markey converted the scores were once again locked up at 24all. The game went into extra time and

Damon Johnson and his replica Nissan heading towards an Open win. the momentum was with the Cowboys when they were given a penalty. Kai Etherington’s successful kick put the team into the grand final against minor premiers Valleys. OFF TO IRELAND MATTHEW Wilkie may have been a handy leg spin bowler when he was a young bloke playing cricket in Stanthorpe, but it is with Rugby Union that he has carved out a career. Wilkie who has a Master’s degree in coaching and is currently completing his PhD in Talent Development has been with the ARU for 10 years and is the Coaching Pathway Services manager. At a time when Australian Rugby Union needs any talent that breathes to be quickly identified, Wilkie is about to fly the coop and head for greener pastures. He has just been appointed the head of Coaching Education with Irish Rugby Union and begins in his new position the first week in November. Just a hop step and jump from the CF White Oval. ACTION CONTINUES ON RANGE IT proved to be another busy weekend on the range for those at the Inglewood range last weekend. Rochelle and Jodi Bynon saddled up for some Single Action practice on Sunday while others competed in the Pistol competition. A big field faced off In the Pistol Competition, with Robert Smith top scoring followed by Andrew Slack and Jason Lew finishing in third position. There were also two Rimfire Rifle competitions decided. Rimfire produced some good scores but any field position definition were shot out the window - (When was a rest on a bench

There are results for the Slow Fire Any Field Position - 50 metre. The event was won by Ross Jackson who relegated ‘Stephanie and Ray Dudgeon to the minor placings. Ross Jackson also had a win using the lever action animal targets and the placings were again Dudgeon one and two - same as before. A group of members also attended the State Conference, and it will be interesting to catch up with their news in coming weeks. Don’t forget this week on the range is muzzle loading and centrefire rifle action. Follow all the latest on the Inglewood Sporting Shooters Facebook page. BACK IN THE SADDLE MANY may have doubted we would see Michelle Payne back in the saddle after she suffered a career threatening injury after a race fall, but this

is one tough young lady. Payne looked right at home as she guided her mount to a fourth placing at Sale earlier in the week. The Melbourne Cup winning hoop has worked hard on her fitness levels and will be chasing her share of Spring Carnival rides. Her 2015 Cup partner Prince of Penzance also caught the eye last Saturday when he ran at Flemington. Payne has ridden the gelding in most of his 27 starts, but the ride on him in this year’s Cup is not a given. You can be sure this feisty hoop will be doing all in her power to win back the ride in November. In the meantime, she has recently been granted a dual jockey/trainer’s licence and will also be seeking out talent for her Ballarat stable. Perhaps, there was a subtle message for the owners of Prince of Penzance when she joked after being granted her licence saying, “It’s harder to get sacked (as rider) if you train them yourself.”

Local Sport AND NOW THERE ARE SIX NRL fans were treated to some outstanding football games last weekend as the battle to be the last man standing continues. We began the weekend with eight, now there are six and soon it will be four. To merely look at the score line of the Broncos -Titans game, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a onesided affair, but it was an absorbing contest. If Friday night’s game was absorbing, then Saturday night was a nail biter if you follow the Storm or Cowboys. There is so little between these two quality sides fans were left wondering where points were going to come from so strong was the defence from both sides. With the scores at six-all as play got underway in the second half you could almost hear opposition teams begging for the game to go to extra time. As the Storm edged away and the Cowboys fought back and the Storm edged away again, you just knew the Cowboys would make it a contest until the siren sounded. For the Cowboys, there was no late get out of goal card, but they lost no admirers after their 16-10 loss. And so the Storm was the first team to the Preliminary finals forcing the Cowboys to meet the Broncos on Friday night at 1300 Smiles. This game will be a blockbuster - can the Broncos take another step up or will the Cowboys again prove to be the Broncos worst nightmare? All roads in Queensland lead to 1300 Smiles on Friday night where the atmosphere will be electric. The Sharks were all but written off by pundits when Paul Gallen failed a fitness test and did not travel to Canberra. The Green Machine was out in force and the Viking clap was thunderous. The Sharks stand-in captain Wade Graham lasted only eight minutes before he was sidelined, and the cards looked to be falling the Raiders way. Despite trailing by 12 points, the Sharks remained in the contest with great defence and eventually they reaped the reward and put points on the board before half time. A Raiders error proved costly as the second half got underway and the Sharks began building momentum. The lead swung like a pendulum as did the play and the Sharks levelled the scores at 14-all with six minutes to go. The Raiders opted for an unsuccessfully field goal attempt but when the Sharks received a penalty following a

Bridgette Haynes winner of the 8-12 year category heads to the finish line in her classy cart. Raiders indiscretion, the trusty boot of James Maloney sent the Sharks to the Preliminary finals and a week of R&R. It was left to the Panthers and Bulldogs to wrap up week one of the finals on Sunday. The Panthers always looked to have the measure of the Doggies. In an impressive performance the Panthers set themselves up for a mouth-watering clash this Saturday night against the Raiders in Canberra. Expect plenty of noise from that now famous Viking clap, but perhaps it will be the Mountain Men who have the last laugh. In Townsville - well that’s trying to pick your favourite child. The Broncos-Cowboys clash has become the greatest rivalry in the game in recent history - whatever the result, it is sure to be another sensational game played with the highest intensity, the greatest rivalry and respect. Close your eyes and flip a coin - this could go either way. I personally think we were given a peek through the window at the grand final last Saturday night at AAMI Park. BILLYCART SUCCESS ORGANISERS of the second Ballandean Billy Cart bash were breathing a huge sigh of relief when they woke to clear skies and a great day for Billy Cart racing on Sunday morning. As crowds gathered carts in all shapes and sizes arrived with kids from six to well not quite 60 but some pretty big kids - put the finishing touches on their machines. Billy Cart enthusiasts travelled from as far away as Glen Innes for this year’s event. It was obvious that there had been

many hours of work put into these carts. There were an array of designs and styles, but it was Ballandean’s Damon Johnson guiding a Nissan Replica that set the fastest speed down the hillclocked at 47 km/h on John Fletcher’s radar gun. Johnson won the Open final for Chris Haynes team and is looking forward his prize of V8 Hot Laps sponsored by Sirromet. Winners of the finals were: 5-7 years Lilly Simpson; 8-12 years Bridget Haynes; 12-15 years Sidney Hollingsworth. The event is organised by the Ballandean School P & C as their annual fund-raiser and the family friendly day drew another big crowd. P & C President Aaron Cox says given the success of the event again this year we can expect to see Billy Carts on Jacobsen’s road around this time next year. Never too early to start planning next year’s cart. I understand work has already begun on the Eukey Panther Mark 2. MITCHELL BAGS A WIN ONLY a small band of Sporters hit the fairways on Sunday with many regulars involved in the Club Foursome Championship but the standards were still set high. Jim Mitchell celebrated a win as he outscored runner-up Terry Byrnes. Paul Armstrong claimed the Best Gross score and the run downs went to Ray Thorn and John Walsh. There were no takers for the Pin Shots last week, but Dick Hilton and Phil Zikan each treated themselves to a meat tray. The Sporters family send a bug

“Get Well” to one of their stalwarts “Clarky” who is unwell at the moment. While Clarky takes some time to rest and recuperate, Sporters will be teeing off at the normal time of 8am-8.30am this Sunday. ROCKING IT IN WA AS rugby league seasons draw to a close, talk always seems to drift towards the future direction of the game. Former Gremlin Stephen Shatte reports that the game is alive and well and thriving in WA. With Mum Michelle and Dad Stephen both based in the navy in WA, it is unlikely their sixyear-old son Sam will get the opportunity to follow in his Dad’s footsteps as a premiership winning Gremlin. Sam however continues a strong family involvement in rugby league and is enjoying playing with the Rockingham Sharks in the Freemantle Junior Rugby League competition. Grandparents Wayne and June Shatte were on the sideline for some of Sam’s recent games, and of course show no bias when they say he is showing plenty of talent. It seems that league is growing in popularity in the West. Not only is it popular in the junior ranks, but there is also a strong senior competition. BOXERS ON THE ROAD MEMBERS of the Rose City Boxing Club were on the road again last weekend travelling to the Rebels Boxing Tournament in Rosewood. Two boxers Jacko McMahon (75kg division) and Teresa Poole (ladies 60kg division) competed. McMahon was matched with Ben Smith from Spiders Boxing Club in Caboolture who is the current Golden Gloves title holder in the 69kg Division. Smith stepped up a weight division for this fight but had a couple of year’s age advantage. McMahon controlled the fight right from the opening of round one to the end of round three, with good strait hard punching and movement; the key to a unanimous points win. Head trainer Damien Lawler was very pleased with the win, saying they had worked on a few different angles and punches and on tightening up McMahon’s defence. Teresa was not matched on the night. The next fight for the club will be in Warwick in September. BUSY WEEK ON THE COURT IT has been another busy week on the croquet court. In association croquet Joy Newman took on Heather Widderick and Carol Verwey. Joy was in good

form and pegged out with 26, including two breaks of four. Her opponents finished with nine including a break of three from Carol Verney. Jenny Tunbridge and Margaret Dickenson went head to head, and it was Tunbridge who was showing good form with a 26-16 win over her opponent. Pat Schnoor and Andrea Denkewitz played Val Richardson and Grace Howard in a tough game. The game went the way of Richardson and Howard 20-19. Organisers of golf croquet reported their numbers were down with several players unavailable. Six players lined up for triples in the mid-week game. In the first game, Peter Harrington, Dianne Wren and Teresa Payne proved a winning combination. They defeated Marian Castles, Justin Liddy and Elaine Brown in a tie break. Marian Castles was in superb form although on the losing side. She scored all of her team’s six hoops. Members of her team seemed to find their range in the second game. Elaine Brown top scored in the game and partnered Teresa Payne and Peter Harrington to nail a 12-9 win. In the opening game on Thursday, Brown and Liddy had a 12-4 win over their opponents John Draper and Marian Castle. In the second game, the men took on the ladies and won 9-6. The gateball games on Friday were mostly decided by just one point or on the last shot of the game. Andrea Denkewitz captained the White team of Joy Newman, Les Williams, Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick. The Red team of Carol Verwey, John Draper, Grace Howard and Effey Russell was captained by Margaret Dickenson. The opening game was won by the White team 11 points to 10. Margaret Dickenson’s Red team hit back in game two with a10-9 score and continued that winning form into game three to score a 12-11 win. They went on to win game three 17-10. In the final game, Effey Russell hit two of her team’s balls onto the centre goal pole, giving those balls an additional two points each.
