Pair ‘lucky to live’

Floods rescue drama

By Luke Voogt A CFA captain has warned motorists against driving through floodwaters following the dramatic rescue of a man and his teenage sister at Inverleigh on Wednesday. The pair was lucky that airborne paramedics, CFA and SES units combined to rescue them unharmed, said Inverleigh brigade captain Noel Wilson. “All the agencies worked together seamlessly. It was a really good outcome.” The man was travelling south on the Teesdale-Inverleigh Road when floodwaters trapped his vehicle as he attempted to cross the overflowing Leigh River, police said. The fire brigade received a call for help at 5.59pm, dispatching both tankers to the incident. Crews found the ute immersed in 1.2m of murky water rushing in from the north. “It was up to the level of their window and it was run-

Our ‘exercise pill’ makes muscular mice at Deakin A pill that tricks the body into thinking it has exercised could soon help treat heart disease, Geelong researchers have announced. Deakin University Metabolic Research Unit (MRU) revealed on Wednesday that the drug had exercise-like effects on muscles and also improved metabolism. The drug could help people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity said Associate Professor Sean McGee, deputy director of Waurn Ponds-based MRU. “Heart disease is still the biggest killer of people with diabetes and obesity, with little in the way of treatment,” Assoc Prof McGee said. “We’ve identified a drug that makes the body

respond as if it has exercised, with all the fatburning and cardiovascular benefits.” The pill was not intended as a short cut to weight loss, Assoc Prof McGee said. “What we really don’t see is this drug providing an alternative for those people who just can’t be bothered exercising.” The drug works by “turning on” genes normally activated during exercise, which allows the body to burn more fat, Assoc Prof McGee explained. The Deakin team tested the drug on mice, which ran longer on a treadmill, burned more fat and recorded less blood glucose, he said. The treated mice failed to lose weight loss but

tended to eat more. “What we do know is that the mice that received the drug over extended periods were metabolically much healthier than those not taking the drug,” Assoc Prof McGee said. The scientists now wanted to design a morespecific and potent drug before human trials. “This could be for frail people who can’t exercise but are at risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes or metabolic disease or patients with obesity who struggle to exercise,” Assoc Prof McGee said. “The drug would allow them to find that initial exercise program easier to get into.”

“We chose to make a traditional German-style kellerbier with an Australian twist,” said local brewer Luke Scott. “We used Helga hops in our recipe, which were developed in Australia from a German cultivar and which have been grown in Tasmania.” Mr Scott said a craft brewery supplier donated malt for the project and passed on an original recipe from the Weyermann family in Germany.

Poor old Bellarine MP Lisa Neville can’t take a trick in her ministerial duties. A couple of weeks ago Double Take noted her struggles with the police ministry – possibly the toughest gig on the state front bench at the moment, given the current level of public frustration with staffing issues and rising crime. But Lisa’s also Water Minister, which might sound like an easy gig with all the rain this week. Well, it was certainly no lark for Lisa as she dodged questions about her $27 million maiden purchase of water from Wonthaggi’s desalination plant as the state flooded. As one wit noted, it’s like ordering $27 million worth of sand when you live in the Sahara. Hopefully – for Lisa at least – the argument doesn’t turn full circle to how the money could pay for more cops! And in another case of rain-related bad timing this week, a local tourism body spruiked the economic value of the Great Ocean Road - the day before rain damage closed it indefinitely. Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism boss Wayne Kayler-Thomson (pictured) announced that tourists spent

$782 million along the iconic route annually. The authority used the figure to call for more spending on the road to attract even more tourists and create more jobs. Well, given the damage this week, that’s one wish sure to be granted, although without the tourists and with the jobs in road works rather than hospitality. Are Geelong producers about to earn a stake in China’s meat importation business? Or, to put it another way, are the Chinese about to have a steak in Geelong? Whatever, the outcome could be exciting for a handful of local businesses after a delegation from China and South East Asia visited the region this week to inspect local meat products. The delegates were here for Food and Beverage Trade Week, which sounds like an awesome way to pass seven days. Challenge Meats, Farm Foods and a local cattle farm were some of the businesses under the Asian microscope. Given the population in China and its neighbours, and their growing hunger for Westernstyle meat, it’s a significant opportunity for the local economy. Double Take just hopes the local operators used the traditional butcher’s welcome: ‘Pleased to meet you, with meat to please you’. Much better than ‘Get some pork between your chopsticks’!

Mum videos jogger clash By Luke Voogt Video of a jogger swearing at a two-year-old girl learning to ride on a track beside the Barwon River has outraged social media users. The girl’s mother said she had never experienced such an incident during her seven years living in the area. Carly, who wanted her surname withheld, had hoped to create a family memory when she began filming her daughter learning to ride. “I was trying to capture the moment.” Carly, her daughter and nine-year-old son had just begun their outing when the jogger approached from behind, she said. In the video he first said: “Excuse me. You don’t need the whole path.” Carly said she was already slightly left of the middle of the path but moved further and told the man to calm down. But she said he continued to berate her as she moved over, so she responded: “Shut up, d***head”. “It’s not my proudest moment but I’m very protective of my children. “I’m a single mother with two kids with limited support, so I probably take that protection a level above. “This wasn’t about me hogging the path - it was about this guy being a cranky pants.” But Carly said she was shocked most when the man ran past her daughter and said: “Get out of the f*****g way,” which was also audible on the video “I just couldn’t wrap my head around how much anger he must have to react like that. “I felt a little bit of pity for him to be honest, I just can’t fathom it.” Carly said she only realised she had recorded the incident when she arrived home and played the video. She posted it video on Facebook that night. The recording went viral after a Facebook friend shared it on a community page. The video

Flood pair rescue From page 1 “At least we had a rope on them if it started to shift and float downstream,” Mr Wilson said. “We thought the safest thing to do was to wait for the Air Wing.” About 20 minutes later Geelong CFA’s rescue unit arrived and fed life jackets down the ropes to the pair. Soon after a combined police and ambulance helicopter arrived, with paramedics then winching the pair to safety. Paramedics treated the local 25-year-old man and the 13-year-old girl for mild hypothermia after the helicopter landed nearby. Mr Wilson said the Inverleigh-Teesdale Road had been closed about one kilometre north of the rescue, just south its intersection with Common Road. His tanker passed a VicRoads ‘road closed’ sign on its way to the rescue, he said. “People just don’t realise how dangerous it is to try to get through flood waters.” Local volunteer firefighter Garry Vidler, who was involved in the rescue, praised the efforts of the police helicopter pilot. “It was incredible to watch. He just hovered there and didn’t move an inch as they hoisted them up.”

GOR stays closed

SHOCKING: An image from the video of a clash between a jogger and a mother walking beside the Barwon River with her children. had more than 70,000 views in four days. Scores of viewers commented, with the vast majority condemning the jogger’s behaviour. Carly said the attention to the video was em-

barrassing but she hoped it would encourage path-users to have more respect for each other. “Everyone should feel safe and comfortable using that path.”

The Great Ocean Road will remain closed indefinitely after this week’s heavy rain, according to VicRoads. Fallen trees and about 30 landslides forced police to close the road from Fairhaven to Lorne on Wednesday morning. Removal of mud and rocks was underway at a number of sites, said VicRoads’ David Teague. “It’s important these are removed to ensure driver safety once all roads reopen. We’re working toward opening parts of the road as soon as we can.” Mr Teague said he was unsure whether the repairs would have an impact on the summer tourism season. “We’ll be assessing the full impact of damages once the flooding has subsided and we’ve inspected the road.” The Princess Highway could be an alternative route for some travellers, he said.

Group ‘to keep watch on suburbs’ By Luke Voogt

ON WATCH: Nick Cross has vowed to keep an eye on crime in Geelong’s northern suburbs despite an agreement with police to curtail his patrols.

Start Your Career in Aged Care

Bell Post Hill’s Nick Cross has vowed to keep an eye on crime in Geelong’s north despite calling off patrols after discussions with police. “We’ve stopped patrolling, so to speak, he said. “But we’re going to still look out for our neighbours and keep our own streets safe. The move follows a meeting with Superintendent Craig Gillard and other senior Geelong officers. The father-of-two started a local Facebook page and began co-ordinating car patrols early last month in an effort to prevent crime in Geelong’s north. Police advised Mr Cross that he could be held responsible if things went wrong, he said. “The way police put it to me is if (the patrols) continue and someone gets hurt I’m liable for damages. Mr Cross formed the group on 2 August, he said, after finding that his house was one of seven that criminals planned to raid. A friend overheard teenagers saying they were hitting Bell Post Hill that night at Rose Avenue shops, he said. “They’re teenagers and they like to gloat, he said. Mr Cross and others discouraged the wouldbe robbers by “staring them down and driving behind them. One group member followed a car to a paddock behind McDonalds in North Geelong where they saw the occupants change its number plates, Mr Cross said. “You put heat on them and they just piss off. “We called the police a number of times but it wasn’t until 5am we actually saw a divi van in Bell Post Hill. Mr Cross said him being labelled a vigilante was an exaggeration. “We’re not walking around in the streets with

weapons, creating noise or in big groups. We’re just concerned parents. Mr Cross said he had seen a noticeable drop in crime in the past month, which he attributed to his group’s efforts. “Criminals can read and they can listen to radio stations. Mr Cross said police offered him a seat on the Geelong Safety Committee after he met with them on Monday. He hoped this would give him a chance to speak out against “lenient sentencing for convicted offenders. “I would just be representing the everyday person, he said. “They’re putting the community in danger by putting these people back out into the community. “Hopefully, with the right pressure on the right people we can cause the change we want which is safer streets. However Supt Gillard said the committee would decided how Mr Cross could contribute. “What I have done is an afforded him opportunity to present to the committee. Supt Gillard said he warned Mr Cross about the dangers of conducting the patrols. “I’ve just asked him to consider his response. They are untrained, unskilled and unprepared for what may be presented to them. There were a number ways Mr Cross’s group could contribute to police efforts, Supt Gillard said. This could involve Mr Cross sharing information from his online searches of suspicious number plates, he said. “That’s something that he needs to report to police when he sees it. Supt Gillard rejected claims of a lack of police patrols in Geelong’s north. “We patrol those areas quite frequently, he said.

Local MPs brawl on gay marriage

PLEBISCITE: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Australia’s gay marriage plebiscite has ignited a brawl between Geelong’s opposing federal MPs. Liberal Sarah Henderson demanded that Labor’s Richard Marles support the plebiscite if he was “genuine” about supporting same-sex marriage. Mr Marles hit back saying that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s capitulation to the “right wing” made supporting a plebiscite difficult for Labor. The Turnbull government this week set 11 February as the date for the public vote on support for gay marriage. The compulsory poll will ask: “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?” The Government will allocate $7.5 million in public funding each toward the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ campaigns. Ms Henderson, the MP for Corangamite, said the Turnbull Government was aware that many Australians had “strong personal views about same-sex marriage”. “That is why it was decided last year that this issue should be resolved through a plebiscite, which gives every Australian the opportunity to have his or her say.” Ms Henderson said she would support in parliament legislation to allow gay marriage if the yes vote won. “Our government made an election commitment to hold a plebiscite on same-sex marriage. We are now delivering on that commitment. “This approach was previously supported by Labor. “I remain concerned that Labor’s attempts to derail the plebiscite will put this issue on the backburner. “If parliamentarians such as Corio MP Richard Marles are genuine about their support for same-sex marriage they will support the legisla-

tion required to conduct the plebiscite.” Mr Marles focused his attack on the Prime Minister. “Malcolm Turnbull’s expensive, divisive and damaging plebiscite is going from bad to worse,” the Corio MP said. “After a year as Prime Minister Mr Turnbull now has one objective: appeasing the right wing. “The plebiscite has been designed by those who don’t want marriage equality; it is designed to fail.” Mr Marles said Australians were “incredibly disappointed” in Mr Turnbull’s lack of leadership. “Mr Turnbull’s capitulation to his right wing (is) making it harder for Labor to support (a plebiscite) every day but (we) will wait for final legislation and take it through our normal processes. “We can make marriage equality a reality right now. All Mr Turnbull needs to do is show some leadership and hold a free vote in the parliament. “Malcolm Turnbull is standing in the way of making marriage equality a reality right now because he isn’t strong enough to stand up to the right wing radicals running his party.”

‘Demand’ for Geelong gas factory By Luke Voogt A proposed LPG conversion plant for Geelong is closer to reality with a business case underway, according to a gas company boss. Elgas chief executive officer Warring Neilson said “a number of interested parties” were working together to create a plan to submit to State Government. “We have someone who can prepare that business case for us.” The business case was still in its early stages,

Mr Neilson said. “It’s just going through all of the issues you have to consider. We’ve got plenty of work to do but we’re working to announce a solution.” State Industry Minister Wade Noonan the government would do all it could to support communities suffering from the closure of car manufacturing plants in Victoria. “The Government will consider any proposals for their viability.“ In 2015 the Government commissioned a $60,000, four-month demand study with support from Gas Energy Australia and Victorian Auto-

mobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC). Gas Energy Australia said the study identified “significant demand” for autogas vehicles. The study recommended a business plan to evaluate the viability of building local conversion facilities. Gas Energy Australia chief John Griffiths spoke in support of local LPG conversion facilities at an industry forum in July. “The strong support available for new ventures from the Victorian Government is most welcome to minimise the loss of automotive jobs ... as Holden, Ford and Toyota shut down their manu-

facturing operations,” he said. “With Ford to close its Geelong manufacturing plant on 7 October, a large-scale LPG plant could provide some much-needed jobs for the city. We certainly hope there is a potential to absorb some of the manufacturing workers.” Shadow industry minister Ryan Smith said the Government should stop studying issues and start delivering on its promises. “Geelong has many highly skilled workers and the Government needs to ensure that there are strong local industries to support them.”

Lounge lends a patient ear for Corio's lonely residents Watchdogs ‘cut’ Corio’s Listening Lounge celebrated 18 years of looking out for locals on Wednesday with a free lunch for volunteers and visitors. Coordinator Reverend Peter Jewell said the lounge was a place for residents to feel safe. “We offer a listening ear and if people need help we try to offer assistance.” Up to 20 people used the group’s community room at Corio Shopping Centre daily, Rev Jewell said. “Some have been coming here the whole 18 years.” Many of the lounge's elderly visitors felt isolated in Geelong’s northern suburbs, Rev Jewell said. Widower Harry Webb has brought flowers from his garden to the lounge almost daily for the past five years. “It helps lift their spirits," he said. "I have no family nearby - this is my family here.” “Most people here come from struggles of some sort." Janet Pavlakis, who was at the lunch, has volunteered at the lounge since it began in 1998. She and her late husband were founding members. “A lot of people live alone and don’t have family nearby,” she said. “It’s just a place where they can come and share where someone might listen and care for them.”

The State Government has slashed funding for Neighbourhood Watch in Geelong, according to the Coalition. The former Coalition government provided $600,000 to reinvigorate the program but Labor cuts had left Neighbourhood Watch with only part-time leadership, said Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay. “Daniel Andrews has cut Neighbourhood Watch funding, leaving this tried and true institution without adequate support.” Mr Ramsay said constituents in Police Minister Lisa Neville’s Bellarine electorate had started Neighbourhood Watch programs “to combat the rising crime levels”. “But instead of rewarding them with the additional police resources they need she’s cutting their funding.” Ms Neville’s spokesperson said the Government was “continuing“ to support Neighbourhood Watch with $150,000 from 2015 to 2018. The funding would help the program maintain a state office and assist local branches with delivering crime-prevention initiatives, he said.

Survey to query city mayor vote

GRAVE SIGHT: This year's Geelong Contemporary Art Prize winner.

Ghostly painting in $30,000 art win A “narrative-rich” painting based on a Chinese ghost story has won the region’s biggest art prize, Geelong Gallery has announced. Kate Behnon’s Graveyard Scene/The Beauty and the Sadness of Bones won the $30,000 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize from a field of 550 entries.

The painting was “highly refined in its pictorial organisation of interrelating forms and striking interactive colour”, said gallery director Jason Smith. The painting and other works shortlisted for the acquisitive prize are on exhibition at the gallery until 13 November.

A state survey asks Geelong residents whether they want to vote for the mayor themselves or let councillors decide. The question is one of a series on a new Vote Democracy Geelong website for residents to help “decide the future” of their council, according to State Government. The feedback would help inform a ‘Citizens Jury’ of “the right direction” when it recommended the composition of Geelong’s next council, the Government said. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins called the survey a “great opportunity for the people of Geelong to contribute to the process that is re-shaping their local government”. “Just like at Federal Election time, this type of survey will help residents pick the type of local government representation they want in the future,“ Ms Hutchins said. The survey asks questions ranging from whether councillors should have regional or ward-based focuses to whether residents deserve a say “on all major council policy matters”. The survey closes on 24 September, five days before the first sitting of the Citizens Jury. The Andrews Government appointed newDemocracy Foundation to assemble and conduct the 100-member jury over three Saturdays. The jury will recommend to the Government a preferred council structure, the number of councillors and how the mayor and deputy should be elected. Liberal MP Andrew Katos and former mayor Darryn Lyons have raised concerns the jury could recommend scrapping Geelong’s direct mayoral election for a “return to the bad old days” of councillors choosing the mayor themselves behind closed doors.

SURVEY: Natalie Hutchins. The previous Coalition Government introduced the direct election after years of community lobbying. The first vote delivered prominent Geelong businessman Keith Fagg as mayor and the second elected Mr Lyons, a former Liberal party member. But the Labor Andrews Government sacked Mr Lyons with the rest of Geelong’s council in April, citing a bullying culture at City Hall. The Government then appointed three administrators to act as council until the next elections, scheduled for October 2017. The government initially intended to appoint the administrators for four years but shortened the term amid a public backlash at the length of time without democratically elected councillors. The state online survey is available at geelongcitizensjury.voc.gov.au. Hard-copy surveys are available at public libraries and council’s customer service centre in Brougham Street, Geelong.

Letters Cops mistaken for UFOs With reference to the story in last week’s Geelong Indy, Acting Inspector Monique Leffanue’s claim that our streets are being patrolled is sheer nonsense. Try finding a police presence in Lara during the evening. Nowadays adults cheer when we see a police car driving past and young people think it’s the equivalent of a UFO! Many times I have rung for police attendance in Lara but nothing ever eventuates, so I have given up too. Hats off to the Bell Post Hill residents taking action. The so-called police presence is simply a joke in today’s world. It might be time for Lara residents to do the same as in Bell Post Hill. Unfortunately, it’s the same, tired old story: there are buckets of money if the politicians want something but the usual crying-broke if the community needs something. And they wonder why the public is so cynical. Jeff Cahn Lara

We Cairns do it too Having recently returned from Cairns, population 140,000, to Geelong, population 200,000, the contrast couldn’t be starker. For starters, Cairns has its own modern international airport. Geelong has none and even Avalon Airport is branded as Melbourne. Cairns has many Asian tourists flying in directly. Geelong needs its own international airport, branded as Geelong International Airport. Cairns has many tall buildings and modern hotels. After dark the central business district is vibrant and full of people because many shops are open and a great selection of restaurants and nightclubs is available. I counted five nightclubs open as I walked through the city centre. On the other hand, Geelong after dark is like a ghost town. Cairns Railway Station is modern and built under a large, modern shopping complex. Gee-

Retired Air Vice-Marshal John Blackburn, who prepared the report, said: “Australia’s dependence on imported liquid fuel and oil for transport has grown from around 60 per cent in 2000 to 90 per cent today, with no plan or public government policy to stop this blowing out to 100 per cent”. He called this scenario “scary”, which it is, especially given the sabre-rattling between Australia, the US and China over possession of the South China Sea’s Spratly Islands. Should war break out there, our fuel supplies will be cut. This is a national security issue but neither Mr Marles nor Ms Henderson have replied to my letters. I ask both MPs to answer my letter in this paper. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

Sex and the sinner long’s station looks old – because it is old! Geelong’s whole railway precinct needs to be redeveloped and brought into the 21st Century. Geelong needs a dedicated television station that makes this region its focus, which would bolster the city’s image and promote tourism. Channel 31 doesn’t cut the mustard because it’s Melbourne-centric. To add insult to injury, we don’t even have Darryn Lyons out there pushing the envelope for our town anymore. Perhaps Geelong deservedly is called `sleepy hollow.’ The centre of our town is rundown, dull and unattractive. When the new council is elected it and local MPs should start a spend-big-on-Geelong campaign to modernise and beautify the city, thus creating many local jobs. Alan Barron, Grovedale.

Carbon-free state policy The Victorian Government’s new Take2 initiative

is a turning point. Climate deniers can jump and scream but it is not going to change what is now official state policy as our municipality, businesses and communities begin to take action on the climate emergency. Around 30 to 35 years from now we will all live in a zero-carbon society. Now that we can see the goal poles, let’s get on with the job of getting the ball in there. It’s great to see cricket and footy players showing leadership with bold carbon-reducing steps already. Mik Aidt Geelong

Fuel for thought I recently wrote to local federal MPs Richard Marles and Sarah Henderson about a startling NRMA report on Australia’s liquid fuel security. Countries like America have strategic fuel reserves in the billions of gallons but Australia has enough only to keep the country moving for a

A magistrate recently commented: “This is a court of law, not morality.” He wisely pointed to the weakness in our social experience: the law is called on because morality has been lacking. In past generations it was taken for granted that Australian morality was based on the Bible, on the 10 Commandments. Children today are unaware of these as their behaviour is guided by a Biblical immorality that dispenses birth control to high school girls and promotes sexual freedom for young men. We have forgotten ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery’. Sexual behaviour outside what God and nature have wisely sanctioned leads to problems that will potentially end up in our courts, hospitals and prisons. It often seems we are afflicted by a chronic truth aversion disorder and continue to treat symptoms rather that the obvious causes. Pastor Frank Lowry, Aberdeen St Baptist Church.

FINALLY FRIDAY

Aussie rock royalty jets into town By Luke Voogt Geelong will host Aussie rock royalty next month with the Screaming Jets coming to town. The Jets released their first album in eight years, Chrome, in May and will tour the country for the next two months. Original lead singer Dave Gleeson said he was looking forward to the Go Hard or Go Chrome tour, which makes its second stop in Geelong. “Me and the boys can’t wait to get out on the road,” Gleeson said. Making the album was gruelling at times, he said. “Sometimes you’re in the studio and it’s like pulling teeth. Other times you hang out with your mates, laugh and tell stories and record great music.” The end result was an album which Gleeson described as classic Aussie rock. “We have come out with something we are totally proud of – something to hold up as the real deal,” he said. Jets guitarist Jimi Hocking said the album was influenced by the band’s eclectic tastes in punk, jazz and country. But it still remains faithful to the band’s large fan base, he said. “For me it’s a classic Screaming Jets record but it’s got enough different elements to show we’ve grown over the last 26 years.” Hocking said the Jets had been touring Australia, road testing several new songs at each gig. “By the time the album came out most of the hardcore Jets fans were familiar with at least a third of it.” The Jets shot to fame with their smash hit Better in 1991 and have long been icons of Australian rock. Chrome has reached the ARIA Top 30, following the band’s lengthy lapse between records.

ROCKING: The Screaming Jets will tour Geelong next month. The band suffered through internal strife following its second-last record Do Ya. “There was talk of the band not having any sort of future after that record,” Hocking said. But the band “cleaned up some business behind the scene” and got back to what it does best, he said.

Hocking can’t wait to perform in regional Australia. Despite playing for crowds of 40,000, he loves getting back to the band’s roots. “In Australia, guys like us all cut our teeth playing in the pub scene,” he said. “There’s something very earthy about playing at those rock and roll rooms.”

The Geelong show, at the Gateway Hotel on 8 October, will feature new tracks along with Screaming Jets classics. “Those big hits that established the band - we don’t ignore them, we always play them,” Hocking said.

Weekend of wildflower and arts By Luke Voogt

What’sat on

NATURAL BEAUTY: Red parrot pee orchids will be one of the flowers on display at Anglesea's annual wildflower show. “It’s great for people who like bush walking, but don’t know what to look for,” Ms White said. “You can go down tracks you wouldn’t normally go down, because you wouldn’t know they are there.” Colourful displays of the area’s wildflowers will dominate the Anglesea Memorial Hall – and even weed displays.

“People can see lovely flowers like the African boneseed, which is actually a weed and has all-but-smothered the You Yangs,” Ms White said. The ANGAIR Wildflower and Art Weekend will run from in Anglesea Hall from 10am to 4pm on 17 and 18 September.

Other attractions include sales of indigenous plants grown by ANGAIR volunteers, secondhand natural history books and art and craft. The local CFA will also be on hand to give show-goers life-saving tips. The Wildflower Weekend won the Surf Coast Shire’s Community Event of the Year award last year.

For those who fancy a drive down the coast, Anglesea’s award-winning wildflower and art show will be back in town, starting this Saturday. Organiser Sally White said the event would showcase the incredible diversity and “natural richness” of the surf coast. “The area contains about one-quarter of Victoria’s indigenous flora or around 620 plant species, some rare or endangered.” “It’s also home to more than 100 species of orchids, making it one of the top four ground orchid sites in the world.” The event falls on the first weekend of school holidays, and Ms White said it would make a great family outing. “Especially for those who like the bush but don’t know much about it,” she added. The Roaming Reptiles exhibit is a favourite among the youngsters, Ms White said, offering children the chance to handle live snakes, lizards and crocodiles. “The kids will be excited about touching the snakes - although I wouldn’t be,” Anglesea, Aireys Inlet Society for the Protection of Flora and Fauna (ANGAIR) has run the Wildflower and Art Weekend for 34 years, Ms White said. She and the rest at ANGAIR have spent the past few months collecting a colourful plethora of local flowers from local “bush properties” Ms White said some of the flowers were so difficult to cultivate that ANGAIR members had to pick them in the wild – with a permit of course. “The common heath – Victoria’s floral emblem - is almost impossible to grow. Basically the only hope is going into the bush and finding one.” Local experts will offer guided walking and bus tours to some of Anglesea’s wildflower sites during the weekend.

As school holidays approach, Rollerway is again gearing up for one of its busiest times of the year. Centre manager Ashlie Apracio says there is nothing like seeing kids “who can barely do up their skates” learn to skate in a matter of minutes. “It inspires me to keep training myself,” says the Australian Inline Hockey team rep. Ashlie has skated almost since learning to walk and grew up playing hockey at the Newtown rink. She’s the fourth generation of the 40-year-old family business. “My great grandfather helped my grandparents as their skate mechanic at this centre,” she says. And now, with her nephews hitting the rink, the fifth generation is raring to go. Ashlie’s father Raul, who owns the centre, reckons skating is perfect for family fun. “Anyone can have a go, regardless of age; from one-year-olds to their grandparents,” he says. “Generations of people who have skated here as little kids have come back here as adults, with kids of their own.” Rollerway even caters for birthdays, a fun, active and great-value alternative to children’s parties, according to Raul. Hundreds of kids and adults will roll up to the centre to hire skates for its holiday sessions, Ashlie says. “I think the key is the amazing atmosphere we create - who doesn’t like music and bright lights?” Rollerway Skate Centre is open every day over the holidays at 6-8 Lambert Avenue, Newtown. Phone 0411 335 544 or visit rollerway.com.au for information and opening times.

Segway’s are fun to ride for almost anyone.

Two-wheeled fun Tim Carr’s Segway tours through the Leura Park Estate are one of a kind in Geelong, he says. Tim has been cruising through the estate with his fleet of all-terrain Segways for the past 12 months. “Leura Park has a huge amount of space and beautiful scenery which just lends itself to the tour.” Tim, 62 and a retired schoolteacher, learnt to ride the Segway just before starting the business. “Anyone can do it - they all pick it up within five minutes of being on the Segway,” he says. “I’ve had people in their seventies doing it and even an 11-year-old.” The only limits are the vehicle’s 35kg and 115kg weight limits, he says. The former teacher of 30-plus years says his brother inspired him to create Segway Geelong after enjoying similar tours in New Zealand. “He figured they hadn’t been happening much

FREE

in Victoria,” Tim says. The business is one of just a few of its kind in Victoria, he says. Tim says the tour is a great opportunity for school holiday fun. “Prior to this I’ve focused mainly on adults, but the kids I’ve had have actually been the most skilled,” he says. Parents can have a glass of wine and lunch (from Thursday to Sunday when the cellar door is open). However, he is keen to get parents involved and is offering discount rates for them to ride with their children. Tim says he’s looking to expand his tour to Eastern Beach and has been meeting VicRoads and Geelong Council to make this a reality. “They’ll be going by Christmas,” Tim added. Heart of the Great Ocean Walk

Cape Otway Lightstation is calling all young scallywags and buccaneers to join in the fun at one of the region’s premier tourist attractions during the school holidays. Kids will be able to “arrrr” and “errr” with the best of them when the lightstation gets on its Captain Jack Sparrow during the holidays’ first week. From 11am to 2.30pm from 19 to 22 March, the lightstation will host Talk Like a Pirate with plenty of fun activities on shore. Arrabella the Piratess and her parrot will be on hand to help kids walk the plank, drink ‘poision’, hunt for treasure, test their strength in a tug-owar and, of course, hoist the Jolly Roger. After the pirates fun, kids can stick around for something grotesquely gruesome.

Terrible Tragedies will tell them all about the 13 awful ways to die in 1848, when pirates and early settlers found that life was pretty tough indeed. Other holiday fun at Cape Otway Lightstation during the holidays include history talks suitable for all ages at 11am, 2pm and 4pm. Bush tucker talks will serve up plenty of interest at noon and 3pm while the lightstation’s café will be open from 9am to 4.30pm. Just an easy daytrip from Geelong, the lightstation is at the end of Otway Lighthouse Road, Cape Otway. More information, including accommodation options and tours, is available at lighstation.com.

Road Users travelling along Barwon Heads Road, between Boundary Road and Lower Mt Duneed Road, Armstrong Creek, are advised that the road will be closed between 8pm on Wednesday 21 September and 4am on Monday 26 September. Winslow Constructors are undertaking deep excavation works to extend the storm water drainage network across Barwon Heads Road as part of the construction of the new Warralily Neighbourhood Activity Centre. Works will be carried out around the clock to ensure all work is completed, with some key tasks to be performed during the night, ensuring the road is ready for Monday morning commuters. Every effort will be made to eliminate nose and keep disruptions to a minimum. Signage and designated detours will be in place to redirect traffic while these works are carried out. Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.

SPORT An athlete for all seasons Geelong-born athlete Jessica Gallagher has done her hometown proud becoming the first Paralympian to win a medal at both the winter and summer Paralympics. Gallagher won bronze in cycling in the onekilometre time trial last weekend, riding tandem with pilot Maddie Janssen. The 30-year-old celebrated the win on social media. “(I’m) still finding it hard to believe I have just become the first Australian athlete to medal at a summer and winter Paralympics or Olympics,” she wrote on her Instagram account. “I am so incredibly proud to have fulfilled this dream, to have overcome the unique challenges I’ve faced in transitioning between alpine skiing,

track cycling and athletics.” The medal capped off the historic achievement for the cyclist after she won bronze in the visually impaired giant slalom skiing in Vancouver two years earlier. Gallagher competed in the long jump and javelin at the London 2012 Games before switching back to skiing for a giant slalom bronze in Sochi in 2014. She switched again to cycling when long jump was dropped from Rio’s program. Gallagher also competed in the 3km individual pursuit at Rio, placing ninth in qualification. With the Rio Paralympics finishing Sunday, Highton’s Richard Colman and Grovedale’s Jemima Moore were still a chance for a medal on Friday.

Moore will compete in the T54 800m on Saturday evening while Colman was scheduled to race early Friday morning in the T53 800m (Australian Eastern Standard Time). Moore finished 11th in round one of the T54 400m and 100m wheelchair sprint, while Colman placed 12th in round one of the T53 wheelchair 400m. Ocean Grove’s Sam McIntosh came excruciatingly close to a medal finishing fourth in the T52 100 metre wheelchair sprint in 18.13 seconds. The 26-year-old finished just behind Americans Gianfranco Lannotta and Raymond Martin, and Mexican Salvador Hernandez Mondragon in the sprint final.

Warriors in play off, but can they step up for promotion By Josip Zilic The biggest test of North Geelong’s resolve comes this Saturday night in its play off for promotion to return to NPL1 against Richmond at Jack Edwards Reserve. Richmond face a similar situation as the Warriors did in 2015 where it finished third last in NPL1 and await the season of NPL2 to end which is done with a NPL2 playoff between the East and West second placed teams. This time around the break was four weeks instead of five however it doesn’t exactly provide the backdrop required to build up for a finals type intensity. North Geelong will be feeling ready for the occasion after a comprehensive 4-1 win over Dandenong Thunder last week. Dandenong had the early opportunities and if not for some brilliant saves by Daniel Zilic the score line may have been somewhat different. Former A-League star Kristian Sarkies unleashed a ferocious strike on 15 minutes that dipped and spun in the wet conditions which Zilic parried away in spectacular fashion. Soon thereafter North settled and was utilising its ability to spring into transition to cause Dandenong to retreat from its early dominance. The Warriors opened scoring on 27 minutes when Kene Eze found Nicholas Jurcic darting to goal, his strike hit a defender and fell to Michael Anderson who slammed the ball home from close distance. Two minutes later it was Eze again playing provider powering past former Socceroo Simon Colossimo to thread the ball for Jurcic to extend the lead. After half time North Geelong was intent on maintaining the momentum and on 48 minutes Matt Thorne intercepted a poor ball in the midfield to send Eze on a run where he again found Jurcic whose goal box bound ball was perfectly met by Anderson to notch up a comfortable lead. Dandenong fought its way back though and lead a nervy 15 minute period for the Warriors

MAKING A SPLASH North Geelong's Michael Anderson celebrates his goal in the rain. (Live Pixel) and eventually pegged a goal back in the 61st minute when Nick Modafarri weaved his way into position to drill the ball hard and wide of Zilic to try and lift his side. However North Geelong steadied and clawed the ascendancy back, finishing strongly with another counter attack on 81 minutes that took the sails out of Dandenong’s fortunes. Jurcic picked up a clearance deep in North Geelong’s midfield to find Anderson who evaded

his defender and oncoming keeper to place the ball for the final nail in the coffin. A cautious yet delighted coach Micky Colina commented after the match: “It’s terrific that we’ve been able to respond in this fashion, however there is one more to go and we cannot under estimate the quality of Richmond.” Action for the final playoff gets under way at 6pm.

Anglers spread their tentacles ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Queenscliff ’s annual run of large squid continued shaping up well over the past week. Anglers boated squid from the Point Lonsdale Bight, Bell Reef and the grass beds to the east of the harbour. Drifting using large 3.5 sized jigs was the most effective tactic, especially on the runin tide. Other areas such as the mouth of Swan Bay were also productive but the average size was smaller. Whiting were snapped on the grass beds as well, with the key to success moving position until a decent patch of fish was located. Corio Bay was again a bit hit and miss, with snapper still holding around the Western Beach moorings. Stingaree Bay’s spoil grounds were a great choice for anglers casting soft plastics, with pinkie snapper devouring turtleback worms. Snapper were also boated in 40m off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, along with gummy shark to 10kg. Fresh baits such as squid and salmon returned the best results by far. Surf anglers beached some impressive salmon to just over 2kg from Bancoora and Jan Juc Beaches. Walking the beaches on a rising tide while casting 25g to 30g lures on a light spin set-up was ideal. The rock platforms either side of Lorne produced salmon of larger size. Tuna continued to lurk off Portland and Port Macdonald, with dedicated anglers weighing in fish over 100kg. Trolling skirted lures in and around bird activity was definitely the way to go. Lake Purrumbete proved fickle, with limited numbers of trout taken. However, anglers casting or trolling Daiwa Double Clutch lures around bait balls caught some good-size redfin. Lake Bullen Merri was similar next door but with the odd rainbow trout and Chinook salmon taken while trolling Tassie Devils and hard-body lures. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt ventured up to Bright again where the streams produced numerous brown and rainbow trout to 40cm on both fly and lure. Adam said the streams were still high and dirty but flowing slightly less. Darren Wlock and Aaron Wilson fished Lake Eppalock, casting lures from a boat to catch a 52cm yellowbelly along with plenty of redfin that they found in schools with a sounder. Freshwater anglers are advised to stay focussed on Lake Purrumbete with the rain sure to put the trout on the chew.
