A CHICKEN hatchery with the capacity to process close to a million chicks a week will start construction near Allora in January. Brisbane-based chicken meat giant Darwalla will build a 5000 square metre factory on its site off Bradfields Road - on the Dalrymple Creek flood plain - and expects it to be operational by October 2017.

The plan was first put to the Southern Downs Regional Council in mid-2011 and was approved in August of that year, but became mired in argument over operating conditions and was also put on hold while Darwalla reviewed its commercial viability. Allora residents raised a raft of environmental concerns, including questions over the handling of an expected 7.8 million litres of waste-

Rail link hope

In brief Females arrested TWO females have been arrested by Warwick police in relation to an alleged break-and-enter at an Albion Street residence in Warwick in the late afternoon of Monday 19 September. Police said there were a number of witnesses to the incident who gave police information which led to the arrests. A female adult and a female juvenile were due to appear in the Warwick Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 20 September.

By Jeremy Sollars GARY Hayes has been calling for a Warwick link to the Melbourne to Brisbane inland rail proposal for close on two decades and he’s not giving up. The Warwick surveyor and town planning consultant has read the numerous reports produced by various bodies over the years and he still believes there’s potential to bring the line within 10 kilometres of Warwick. Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg has been firing up this week about what he has called a “buried” report into the rail plan which outlines costings for potential routes through southern Queensland. The report states that the Australian Rail Track Corporation - the federally-funded group currently pushing for the inland rail line - has a preferred route from Inglewood to Toowoomba via Millmerran costed at $3.07 billion. But the same report shows a different line through Karara west of Warwick would cost $2.97b and would avoid floodplains at Millmerran. But Mr Hayes believes there is scope for an altogether different option involving a loop from the existing Inglewood line past the Warwick airport at Massie and heading north to link to the existing Warwick to Toowoomba line across the Glengallan flats. “This would allow the potential for industrial development in the vicinity of the airport, with a railway link only around

Gary Hayes says there is scope to bring the inland rail line closer to Warwick than Karara. 10 kilometres from Warwick,” Mr Hayes said. “There would be potential for something like a grain terminal or a distribution centre or other options, and a road transport link to the Eight Mile bypassing Warwick and utilising Willowvale Road.” Mr Hayes concedes the option has not been fully investigated and costed but maintained it would be considerably cheaper than the ARTC’s Millmerran route, which would involve a 20 kilometre floodplain crossing near Millmerran which would effectively act as a dam wall. Mr Hayes said he had met with Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie this week and would continue pressing for further investigations into ways to bring any future inland railway closer to Warwick than Karara.

Along with Cr Dobie and Mr Springborg, Mr Hayes has been critical of the consultation process employed by the ARTC, which he says has all but ignored options other than the Millmerran line. He said the ARTC had been accused of giving affected farmers and landowners two hours’ notice of public meetings and had not adequately consulted all the relevant communities, including Warwick. He Millmerran line also did not link up with the new Wellcamp Airport in Toowoomba. “At the end of the day Warwick needs more connectivity with Toowoomba,” Mr Hayes said. “This is our economic future we are talking about - it’s too big an issue not to look at all of the available options.”

THE Southern Downs Regional Council says its upcoming “Cuppa with the Councillors” forums will provide the opportunity for councillors to engage with the community and to understand better what residents want and to inform them about what the council is doing, and the thinking behind some of the decisions that are made. These forums will be held on a monthly basis in communities across the Southern Downs region. Times and venues are as follow: Monday 26 September , 5pm–7pm, QCWA Stanthorpe Rooms, 5 Victoria Street, Stanthorpe. Monday 24 October, 5.30pm–7.30pm, QCWA Warwick Rooms, 76 Grafton Street Warwick. Wednesday 23 November, 6pm–8pm, Wallangarra School of Arts Hall, Merinda Street, Wallangarra. Wednesday 14 December, 5.30pm–7.30pm, Killarney Senior Citizens, 1 Ailanthus Street, Killarney.

Crash updates POLICE are waiting to interview the rider of a motorcycle which was involved in a crash near Allora on Sunday. The crash happened around 12.30pm near Reserve Road and Jonel Park Road, with the male rider initially thought to have critical injuries. Fortunately he escaped with only minor abrasions and some hip pain. Queensland Police Media said investigations were also ongoing into the cause of a crash between a truck and a car near Cunningham’s Gap last Monday afternoon which left the highway closed for around nine hours.

A spokesman said police were still waiting to interview the Upper Coomera 34-year-old sedan driver who was seriously injured. He is understood to still be in Brisbane’s Princess Alexandrea Hospital.

Stanthorpe police report ABOUT 6.50pm on Wednesday 14 September police attended a High Street address in relation to a domestic violence incident where a 34-year-old male allegedly assaulted his 30-year-old female partner while intoxicated. The male was taken into custody by police who lodged an objection to his bail and held him in custody due to him recently being released from prison on various charges including five previous breaches of a domestic violence Order. Stanthorpe police also reported two drug drivers were processed on Monday 12 September with a 35-year-old woman intercepted at 9.30am in McGlew Street and a 32-yearold male stopped in Matthew Street a couple of hours later, both testing positive to drugs in their system while driving.

Grants opened COMMUNITY organisations of the Southern Downs will once again have an opportunity to apply for a financial injection to bring their project, activity or service to life though the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Community Grants Program (CGP) and Community Support Program (CSP) in 2016/17. The program will open on 3 October and close on 31 October. The CGP is available to provide funding for one-off community based activities or projects or one-off capital or equipment purchases by eligible community organisations. The council intends to open its Community Support Program funding during the first quarter of 2017. It is holding two community information sessions about the programs and how to use SmartyGrants on Tuesday 4 October from 5.30pm to 7pm at the CWA Rooms on Victoria Street, Stanthorpe, and on Wednesday 5 October from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Warwick Town Hall.

Handbag and iPhone theft By Jeremy Sollars STANTHORPE Police have released CCTV images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with inquiries into a theft that occurred on Monday 19 September. At about 2.30pm a handbag and iPhone were stolen from the Stanthorpe McDonald's on the New England Highway just north of town. The man is described as having a notable tattoo on the back of his right lower leg (pictured). If you have any information that could assist with the identification of this person, please contact the Stanthorpe Police on 4681 6400 and quote reference number QP1601773378. Alternatively contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com. au 24 hours a day.

Chicks hatched at the Allora operation will be grown out at other Darwalla facilities before processing.

It’s a chicken coup From front page Other chicken farming operations in the region include broiler or feeding plants operated by the Carr Farming Trust at Elbow Valley and by the Fessey family at Pratten. Darwalla chief executive officer David Bray confirmed to the Free Times that work on the hatchery would commence at the start of next year. In a statement released to staff last month Mr Bray said the hatchery would be “a quiet, clean and green operation designed to integrate into its natural surrounds”.

“The new Allora hatchery will comprise of a 5000 square metre building, 600 metres away from an entry off Bradfields Road and will process up to 800,000 live chicks per week in the final phase. “Heat energy produced by the chickens will be harnessed to create heating and cooling. “The Allora operations will be conducted almost entirely undercover in a purpose-built, self-contained facility specifically designed to minimise radiated noise and odour.” The hatchery will be constructed

by Badge Construction Group with Mr Bray saying Darwalla’s preference was to use local contractors “when and where we can”. He said the hatchery would require around 10 to 12 full-time positions when operational. Southern Downs Regional Council’s Acting Director of Planning, Environment and Community Services Tim O’Brien said Darwalla requested that the council review some of its conditions of approval after the application was approved on 24 August 2011.

“As a result some changes were made to the conditions and a negotiated decision notice was issued on 31 October 2011,” he said. “The approval had a relevant period of four years from the date the approval took effect, and a request to extend the relevant period (for two years) was granted on 23 November 2015.” Darwalla supplies chicken meat to a range of outlets across southeast Queensland and into New South Wales, including Coles, KFC, Red Rooster, Nando's and IGA.

Stanthorpe Police say this man can assist them with their investigations into a theft at McDonald's on Monday.

Backpayer tax backdown is on the cards about 1700 submissions were received and are now being considered so we can come to a better solution. “I have spoken with my colleges and government ministers on this because I know how important this issue is for the Southern Downs’ horticultural industry, which is reliant on this type of labour. “This issue has also been raised in the Coalition Party Room and I believe we’re very close to presenting an outcome.” At present seasonal workers can claim the tax-free threshold of $18,200, with many pocketing up to $1000 a week untaxed in peak picking seasons. Most producers and industry groups take the view seasonal workers should not necessarily get off taxfree, but have argued the rate should be significantly lower, around the 18

or 19 per cent mark. Some horticultural producers around the country have vowed not to plant until the government scraps or amends the tax plan. Treasurer Scott Morrison this week effectively put to bed speculation the tax will be axed completely, saying any compromise would still need to deliver the $500m budget boost. Mr Morrison said on Monday his “fiscal task" would not take a back seat to the demands of regional MPs and farmers. “If there are changes to be made, it is my view as Treasurer they will be made in a way that does not disadvantage the budget,“ he said. The government has promised the alternative tax arrangements in whatever form is finally decided on will begin on 1 January next year.

In the 2015 Budget the government proposed subjecting backpackers doing seasonal work such as fruit and vegetable picking to the second marginal tax rate of 32.5 cents in the dollar, which would have raked in $540 million in tax revenue by 2020. But horticultural groups representing Granite Belt growers and others around the country who rely on backpackers to harvest their produce reacted with fury to the plan, which has already scared off many overseas travellers from visiting Australia. “No, I didn’t support the backpacker tax as it was presented in the last Federal Budget,” Mr Littleproud told the Free Times. “What I do support was the Coalition Government’s swift response to review this tax and the consultation process that we’ve undertaken. “We’ve sought comment and 12320230-PB34-16

NEW Maranoa MP David Littleproud has stopped short of saying he will quit the LNP if the controversial backpacker tax goes ahead in its current form. But he’s made it clear he doesn’t support the tax along with fellow LNP Queensland MP George Christensen, who sensationally threatened to ditch his party this week over the tax. A decision on scrapping or slashing the tax could be made within days, if the Coalition backbench and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull can hammer out a deal. Acting Prime Minister and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce is expected to make an urgent cabinet submission on the issue, following Mr Christensen’s threat.

Eye on the future “Taking Stock of the issues of Council” was an insightful glance into the future by the Warwick Daily News on 23 January 2016. Amazing results have followed the election promises of one candidate in particular, Councillor Yve Stocks. So successful has she been, a visit to Canberra to assist the hopeless Federal Government is called for, pronto. Calling herself a passionate tourism advocate, the now Councillor Stocks has seemingly pulled off two of her en-

trepreneurial ideas already. Cherrabah Resort has a new road it seems to prosperity, and her other good idea is to have massive chicken farm developments because innovation she said is the key. Tourism is at the heart of the councillor’s life, however the people who will have to live beside or anywhere near her great idea, the entire township of Allora, will forever wonder at her reasons given for her endorsement of a massive chicken hatchery on the Dalrymple Creek flood plain because she believed “nobody else should build on a flood plain”.

Now that little old Allora is hemmed in by GrainX to the North, six coal mines to the east owned by the Chinese, and now Councillor Stocks’ chicken farm to hatch up to 800,000 chicks a day, council will no longer rate Allora as anything other than an industrial estate. Residential A is for those respected by those who are supposed to govern with fairness and decency, and Allora is already on the way to being the next Oakey, so is expendable. Melba Morris, Allora.

Dalveen in the action By Jeremy Sollars TUCKED away behind the post office in unassuming digs in the rural hamlet of Dalveen, halfway between Warwick and Stanthorpe, is one of the region’s business success stories. The Free Times caught up with Action Graphics this week to learn about the long-standing business which hasn’t actively sought the limelight, but has been kicking commercial goals for several decades. The business was born after owners John and Bev Ursem had a tree change in the early 1980s and decided to call Dalveen home with their “horse-mad” kids. They started off producing an archery magazine and the business grew from there, expanding into screenprinting. Their client base is predominantly in western Queensland where John regularly ventures to find new sales leads, and they also took over the Dalveen Post Office some years back when it was facing closure. “We produce a range of promotional products, a lot of them for the tourism sector,” Bev explained. “We produce stickers and stubbie coolers, stationery, clothing and uniforms and caps and souvenirs, as well as publishing and all types of commercial printing including magazines, posters, business cards and brochures.” The process is an end-to-end one, from graphic design right through to printing and embroidery and enables tourism bodies, clubs, businesses, schools and special events to create a unique identity. Customers can, for example, pick a polo shirt, T-shirt, singlet, cap, jacket or tracksuit from an extensive range and customise it with their own combination of corporate or club colours, logos and other artwork. Other clothing items include basket-

A MAN charged with attempted murder following an incident on Tooth Street in Warwick in August has had his matter adjourned in the Warwick Magistrates’ Court. Nathan William Charles, 28, remains in custody while police prepare a brief of evidence in relation to the alleged stabbing on Saturday 27 August. Police allege Charles attacked a 32-year-old man during a dispute in the quiet Warwick Street and stabbed the man four times in the abdomen. It is understood the attack may have been the result of a long-running family feud. The victim was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, and underwent surgery. Charles was arrested and charged with attempted murder the day after the incident, and also faces charges of public nuisance and threatening violence. His matter was mentioned in the Warwick Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, and he is next due to appear on Tuesday 22 November.

Education & Training Getting it right at the start By Jeremy Sollars LITTLE Tackers Early Childhood Education and Care firmly believe that by getting it right in early childhood they are planting the seeds for engaged and active students. Although only two minutes from the centre of town Little Tackers have created a wonderful environment, both inside and outside. Large rooms with extensive verandahs on all sides provide lovely indoor and outdoor learning spaces. Playgrounds and garden areas with fruit trees and vegie gardens are utilised daily for learning opportunities as

the centre is passionate about utilising their natural environment to promote the health and well-being of their children. Local businesses deliver the fresh fruit and milk that is provided daily at the centre. As an approved kindergarten provider, they can offer continuity of care

from six weeks of age though to kindy. Situated on the corner of Briggs and Yangan Road, off-street parking ensures safe and easy drop-off and pickup. A courtesy bus also operates. Little Tackers also runs before and after school care for children up to 12 years of age where interests are catered for and there is time for homework to be completed. A tour of the centre is encouraged and bookings for 2017 are available. An opportunity has become available for a qualified early childhood teacher to join the team. Please contact the centre for further information on 4661 7016. Everything is hands-on at Little Tackers.

With Stanthorpe’s unique soil, climate and altitude the local wine industry is growing rapidly. “Many of the local winemakers have received national and international awards, so it seemed obvious to us that we would showcase some of these wineries. “We have a large range of local and imported wines and liqueurs, some of which are available for tasting, and at the bar is a great opportunity to match a wonderful wine with a meal from our cafe or treat yourself or a friend by buying some to take with you.” Vincenzo’s deli is well stocked with local and imported products from cheese and salami to jams and chut-

Breakfast is a sure-fire winner with all your favourites, and while the lunch menu changes with the seasons, Vincenzo’s superb house-made pies are a staple, along with pizzas and the much-loved Vincenzo’s platter which features a selection of cured meats, cheeses, antipasto mix, dips and relish served with house-made bread. Tree change into pub life By Jeremy Sollars IT’S a lifestyle many could handle - changing down from the big smoke to running a pub in a picture-perfect country town. That’s just what Kylie and Bob Friend did earlier this year when they took over the lease on the Yangan Hotel. It was a chance spotting of an online ad that found them checking out the pub and the town back in May, and the decision was an easy one. “We were looking at caravan parks in rural areas around Lismore and northern New South Wales as business opportunities but when this came up we thought we’d come and have a look and that was it,” Kylie explained. “The town has been very welcoming and supportive and we’re just loving being here.” While Kylie grew up with family members in the hotel scene Bob comes from a truck driving background and now finds himself cooking in the hotel kitchen, a task he’s relishing. “It’s good, simple pub food,” Bob said. “We source our steaks from

Carey Brothers and Killarney Butchery and people keep coming back so I must be doing OK.” Kylie jokes that she stays out of the kitchen “so the marriage will last”. The pub is very much a family affair with Kylie’s sister Kristie Orr, who lives just down the road, helping out most days behind the bar and in the kitchen. Located on the scenic Cedar Route which winds its way through the rolling countryside east of Warwick towards the range, the pub caters for the passing tourist crowd of a weekend, as well as the regular locals. The hotel has four comfortable and very affordable accommodation units but some of the travellers like to rough it a bit with their swags. “We get motorcycle and car groups coming through and a lot of them like to just sleep in their swags out the back,” Bob said. “Some of them were sleeping out there in winter - we thought they were mad. We allow free camping for them and for the caravan travellers. A lot of it is just word of mouth.”

Upcoming events include live music with local group ‘Moonshine’ this Saturday 24 September, a special NRL grand final day with a supporters’ dress-up on Sunday 2 October and popular entertainer Susie Collier on Friday 7 October. The hotel is open for dinner in the recently upgraded bistro every night of the week from 6pm to 8pm, lunch from 12pm to 2pm, as well as Sunday breakfast from 7.30am to 10am from just $7.95 per person. Raffles held on Friday night help raise money for local groups such as the Yangan Progress Association, the Yangan State School P&C and local sports groups. Happy Hour is from 5pm to 6pm Monday to Thursday and from 5.30pm to 6.30pm Friday to Sunday, with the Jag The Joker jackpot board a popular tradition of a Sunday night. Kylie and Bob are also in the process of obtaining a Keno licence. Takeaway alcohol sales are available and Kylie and Bob are looking at a convenient driveway service. Dinner bookings are preferred, particularly at the weekend - call the Yangan Hotel on 4664 8190.

Kylie’s sister Kristie Orr helps makes the pub a real family affair.

What’s On Six-a-side summer footy By Jeremy Sollars GOOD fun, good mates, play football - it’s that simple when it comes to the Warwick Football Association’s Summer 6s competition. With the “official” football season now over, senior and junior players who are keen to kick on into the warmer months and keep up their skills and fitness - while enjoying plenty of friendly competition - can do so by signing up for the Summer 6s. Summer6s is one of Football Queensland’s off season participation activities. It’s a social football format played on smaller fields. Teams are six-a-side with unlimited interchange during the match; each match consists of two equal periods of 15 minutes, with a brief half-time interval for teams to change ends. A maximum of 10 players can register for any one team, from juniors (8-10, 11-13 and 14 to 16) and seniors 17 and above. Truly “Football for Everyone”, this program is perfect for current players who want to keep active over the summer, those who have played, but don’t have time to dedicate to a full winter season or

individuals who just want to have some fun with friends. It’s also a great opportunity for new participants to begin playing football in a fun and social setting. Warwick’s Summer 6s will be played at the WDFA grounds at Queens Park on Tuesday nights from Tuesday 11 October to Tuesday 6 December. Juniors will kick off at 4.30pm and seniors at 6.30pm. There will be a muster at the grounds on Tuesday 4 October from 4.30pm to 7.30pm. The cost is only $40 for juniors and $50 for seniors. Register through www.myfootballclub.com.au - registrations close on Saturday 8 October. Payment must be at time of registration online by debit or credit card. To nominate a team register individually then team captain email wdfasummer6s@gmail.com with team name, players’ full names and FFA number of each player. Individual registrations will be allocated a team after muster. For more information call 0447 798 120 or email wdfasummer6s@gmail.com

RECENT springtime rain across the region is being celebrated by our gardening enthusiasts, not least of which is Warwick Horticultural Society president Graham Gillam. Mr Gillam wants to get the word out there about the society’s annual Spring Flower Show and floral window display competition, held to coincide with Rodeo week with the society now in its 108th year. Speaking to the Free Times during wet conditions in his Glennie Heights garden bursting with spring colour, Mr Gillam encouraged both experienced and novice flower growers and local businesses from the Rose City and surrounds to get involved. “This is a great chance for people to show off the results of their gardening efforts now that spring has arrived,” Mr Gillam said. “Our floral competitions are a long Warwick tradition, and we’d love to see a healthy lot of entries in 2016.” Categories for the business floral window competition include floral trade display, floral window, rose display, rodeo display, picture window, school display, financial and professional institutions, foyer and waiting rooms, interior display and artificial display. Entries for the floral window competition close on Thursday 27 October and judging starts the following Friday morning at 9am sharp, ahead of Rodeo weekend. The Annual Spring Flower Show will be held the week

★★★★★★★★ ★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 Don’t be shy when it comes to telling someone how much you like him/her - give a special friend an impromptu call. Financial affairs may dominate the weekend. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 You are superb in the role of diplomat and effectively could end a family disagreement. Make a point of collecting outstanding debts. Your humanitarian spirit is currently highlighted. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 This is the week for branching out - you may take on a part-time job, or perhaps you decide to hone some skills. Your partner enjoys being pampered and responds to your sentimental ways.

Festival organiser Norma O'Hara Murphy with volunteers Del Morris, Niki Murphy and Wendy Ardrey.

CANCER—June 22-July 22 Avoid the counterproductive activity of worrying for its own sake. An unhappy friend responds positively to your encouragement. Public speaking and the performing arts are now featured.

Enjoying the festival were Natalee, Joshua, Kaleb and Jonathan Millard from Hendon.

Music to their ears By Jeremy Sollars

LEO—July 23-August 22 The week emphasizes practical matters. You see how you can apply your abilities to present future projects. Relationships of all kinds are spotlighted. This may be the time to launch a partnership. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Corny ideas may prove much more effective than first believed. Avoid making rash moves where finances or careers are concerned. In romance, spontaneity is your middle name. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 This is a great week for launching partnership projects, especially ones of a creative nature. There may be some tensions at the workplace, but keep a low key.

LAST weekend’s Bony Mountain Folk Festival featured a strong lineup of Aussie artists, and festival-goers came in droves in their cars and campers for the three-day musical muster. TERRY WEST was there to capture some of the faces of the festival...

SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Unexpected events, no matter how minor, can play havoc with present plans. The romantic picture brightens, thanks to your down-to-earth approach. A colleague lends support to your ideas. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Friends look to you for a lesson on self confidence. You could receive an email or letter from a long way away bringing bright news. Business and pleasure blend surprisingly well. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 This will be a good week for approaching people for favours. A Leo person may influence your present thinking. Links with the past encourage you to reflect on the immediate future. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 This is a great time for promoting yourself. Tell people why they should listen to your ideas. If travelling, be sure that your companion is compatible. Unexpected guests may liven up the week. PISCES—February 20-March 20 A platonic friend may be more devoted than you think and could help you solve a difficult dilemma. This is a good time for enrolling in courses or joining a club.

Terry and Helen Butler from Warwick.

BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are determined, persistent and outspoken. You are also both charismatic and mysterious. You take your relationships as seriously as you take your work. You are ever the perfectionist. Some touches of humour can enhance both your personal and professional spheres.

Well-known local identities Dubbo Turner and Annette Williams at the festival.

Time’s right twice a day

Our old ticker needs some adjustment.

By Jeremy Sollars THOSE observant folk up the main street will have noted that the Warwick Town Hall clock is stuck at either 8am or 8pm, depending on which way you look at it. The old ticker and Rose City landmark has caused the Southern Downs Regional Council a few headaches over the years and will need some fiddly adjusting to get it back on time and a budget allocation for a long-term fix. The council’s engineering services acting director Michael Bell told the Free Times the clock mechanism was “a very old piece of infrastructure which has posed some ongoing issues

over the years”. “With the clock being so old, it’s not easy to source parts quickly, and council also has to access specialised contractors from Brisbane to undertake maintenance and repairs,” Mr Bell said. “This can take time and sourcing expertise from Brisbane means it can be a costly exercise. “In the short term, council staff can adjust the clock manually. In the longer term council plans to fix the problem permanently. “This will require specialist services, with the cost estimated at approximately $40,000, and council would need to consider making a budget allocation for this work.”

First class TRL grand final The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

AFTER a magnificent weekend of NRL which showcased all the best of rugby league once again, an elite footballer hit the headlines this week for all the wrong reasons. Like most fans I am well and truly over the antics of repeat offenders among our top player group. But enough of these selfish few. Unfortunately poor behaviour is also too readily associated with grassroots Rugby League and fans and players often cop a lambasting. There are of course plenty of times when criticism is deserved. However, the TRL hierarchy, the clubs, supporters and players involved in Sunday’s TRL Grand Finals should take a bow. The whole grand final day despite the weather was exceptional. Games were played in the true spirt of good sportsmanship and the supporters were outstanding. Quick to acknowledge good play from all teams. There was no out of control behaviour and while there were plenty of grandstand critics, there was none of the poor behaviour many have come to expect at a rugby league game. Perhaps, it had something to do with the showery conditions - perhaps that is what some of those elite players who choose to ignore the implications of their actions need - a good hosing down. Congratulations to the Premiers Pittsworth and commiserations to the Cowboys A Grade and under-18s - well played and well done Toowoomba Rugby League. - Casey COWBOYS SO CLOSE THE TRL grand final was a thrilling 80 minutes of football and while the Cowboys came away empty handed, they should be proud of what was an inspirational effort. The game was played in conditions that were tough for both teams. Heavy rain in the days preceding and during the decider meant that all finals at Clive Berghoffer Oval on Sunday were played in wet and muddy conditions. After an outstanding final Pittsworth sunk the premiership hopes of the Cowboys with the score at 18-12 in their favour at full-time. It was a real arm wrestle in the first half. Both teams had early opportunities but first points were not posted until the 21st minute when Pittsworth finally broke through the Cowboys defence and five eighth Mitchell Carpenter scored. The Danes looked like going to the break with a 4-0 lead before Matt Marshall put the Cowboys on the board and Dan Watson landed a tough sideline conversion to give the Cowboys the lead. It did not take Pittsworth long to hit back after the half time break. A try to centre Liam Jocumsen put the Danes back in the lead 8-6. Conditions were making handling difficult for players from both sides, but a Cowboys error gave the Danes another opportunity and they extended their lead to 18-6. Warwick have managed some outstanding come-from-behind results this season and the big crowd of Cowboys supporters knew their side was never out of the contest. Cowboys centre Joe Fuimaono gave the supporters hope in the 62nd minute - his try and the conversion by Dan Watson who kicked beautifully in the conditions closed the gap to 18-12 and a grandstand finish. Warwick continued to attack. Brodie Quirk strived for the try-line out wide, only to be collared by Danes second rower Mitchell Carpenter. The Cowboys had one final throw of the dice as the clock inched towards full time when Sam Broomhall took on the defence close to the line but the Danes hung on, denying the Cowboys and grabbing the TRL premiership. It was a high quality game from both teams in wicked conditions. Pittsworth five-eighth Thom-

Luke Brosnan takes on the Pittsworth line in the closing stages of the TRL grand final. as O’Sullivan took out the John McDonald Medal for man-of-the-match. Warwick players Joe Fuimaono Trent Richardson Luke Brosnan and fullback Craig Don played their hearts out for the Cowboys. Warwick captain Dylan Galloway said after the game he was proud of his team. “It was very tough out there. Conditions didn’t make it easy for either side,” he said. “Congratulations to Pittsworth. They played better on the day and deserve the win. “(But) I’m feeling honoured. These bunch of blokes did an outstanding job. Although disappointed, the Cowboys are already looking towards next season, and are hoping to keep the nucleus of this successful side in 2017. There was no joy for the Cowboys under-18 side earlier in the day when they too were defeated in their grand final appearance as Valleys made it a back-to-back win in the TRL under-18 premiership. Valleys made it back-to-back wins in the TRL under-18 age group with victory over Warwick. The Roosters recorded a 20-12 win over the Cowboys to make it two under-18 grand final wins in a row for the club. In other results, Gatton Hawks had plenty to celebrate with wins in both Reserve Grade and Second Grade. A Grade: Pittsworth 18 (Mitchell Carpenter, Liam Jocumsen, Daniel York, Kurtis Shayler tries; Thomas O’Sullivan goal) def Warwick 12 (Matt Marshall, Joe Fuimaono tries; Dan Watson 2 goals) Under 18: Valleys 20 (Zac Stevens, Shannon Lawton, Denzel Burns, Percy Cubby) tries Wally Peglar 2 Goals) def Warwick 12 (Dustin Close, Michael Coleman, tries Kai Etherington 2 goals) WORLD CHAMPS THE Surf Life Saving season officially opened last weekend and volunteer lifesavers at clubs up and down the coast will once again be on patrol ensuring the safety of swimmers. While all the recent hype has been around the performance of our elite athletes at the Olympics and Paralympics, a small but very dedicated group of lifesavers quietly slipped out of the country and headed for the unheralded World Championships of Lifesaving which was held in the Netherlands. Get into trouble these days in the water and you will no doubt be picked up by one of the rubber duck (IRB) boats and their very experienced crews. If you are planning a trip to the beach this summer you can be safe in the knowledge that Kirra and North Burleigh figured prominently in the gold medals in the IRB World Championship events. Kirra club is one of the most iconic on the Gold Coast and this year celebrated 100 years as a volunteer organisation and the IRB team added a gold medal to the celebrations. While not wanting to take anything away from the efforts of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes, these teams were self-funded, no government hand-outs towards this sport. I’m sure the men and women who travelled to Noordwijk and Eindhoven and who week in week out give up their time to ensure our safety on the beaches would love to get a taste of some of the $$$ poured into Olympic sport - not for themselves but for their clubs. SHOWPEICE OF LEAGUE THE Cowboys and Broncos turned on another

Matt Marshall bullocks his way to the line to put the Cowboys on the board just before half time in the A Grade grand final. game for the ages when they clashed on Friday night at 1300 Smiles Stadium in the knock out semi fianl round. While the sell out crowd was in raptures following the game, the NRL heirachy must have had the biggest smiles as this game showcased the very best of rugby league. The replay of the 2015 grandfinal was equally as thrilling the grandfinal itself and once again these two sides who now have without doubt the greatest rivalary in the NRL turned it on in a pressure cooker environemnt. And once again, as the siren sounded full time the teams were all locked up, thanks in no small measure to the freakish talent of that man JT as we have all come to expect. After last year’s grandfinal, the NRL made the decision to play extra time in the finals series if scores were locked up at full time, so this mouthwatering game continued. It is unfortunate that there has to be a winner in games like this - it hardly seems fair but again it was the Cowboys riding high as Benny’s Broncos succumbed to more JT magic. One club’s season over and one club a game away from defending their premiership crown. The game was played in stffling conditions, and it is to be seen this week what effect, if any, it has on the Cowboys players who will face a full strength Sharks outfit. Cronulla skipper and public enemy no 1 to all Queenslanders, Paul Gallen returns from injury for the do-or-die game at Alliaz Stadium as Cronulla chase their first premiership. If Thurston looked fatigued at stages in Friday night’s game against the Broncos, it was no wonder- suffering from the effects of a virus it was revealed later had lost around 5kgs before and during the game and required injections at the half time break. The Sharks may have had the luxury of a week off, but this Cowboys side can pick themsevles up off the canvas and find a way to win like few others. I will be very surprised if they are not grandfinal bound after Friday night’s game. In the other knock out semi, the Green Machine motored on and now take on the might of the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park. Although comprehenisve winners over Penrith there are still some question marks over the Raiders ability to tough it out for the full 80 minutes. They will be made to pay for any lapses at the back end of

I think we are working towards a Storm Cowboys grandfinal. REVELLING IN THE CONDITIONS CONDITIONS were wet under foot and not the most ideal for golf, however, Rob Reeves revelled in the conditions like a good mud larker. He set up a winning score with a good front nine, but it was his 38 off the stick on the back nine that sealed the deal. His 69 was enough to hand him a win in the stroke event sponsored by Brett Lacey, Rodney (Buster) Pettiford and Danny Folkers. Alan Kerr and Mark Hendry were hot on his heels, both finishing with 70. Kerr claimed second place after a countback. Hendry’s consolation for missing out on the countback was a ball in the run down as well as claiming the pin shot at 12 Ian Harvey held the pin at the third and Kev Rowling had best shot at 17. No takers for the pin at 1/10 with Dylan Barraclough taking 5/14 and a ball in the run down. Jason Lawer claimed the pin at 9/18 and Stephen Kay and Keith Barnett also collected a ball in the run down. Aaron Simmers collected the birdies nest at 17. The ladies event was almost a one-player affair as Kay Webb shot a winning nett 73 - an amazing seven shots clear of runner up, Lyn Ludlow with nett 80. Webb had best approach at 17. Linda Kelly collected a ball in the Ladies run down, but there were no takers for the pin shots at three and 12. In match play, Alan Kerr came out on top with a one-up win over Richard Reardon. This weekend Howard and Sons sponsor the Canadian Foursomes with the names of the winners to be engraved on the perpetual cups. This event is not mixed, and play commences with a shot gun start at 11.45am Registrations must be completed by 11.30am, and there is a time sheet on the board at the club for the event.

Some of the action spectators can expect this weekend at the Australian Championships on the Granite Belt. Picture: CONTRIBUTED MURPHY STEPS UP FOR MONTHLY MEDAL THE sun was finally shinning on the Wallangarra course last Saturday, and players who were competing for the Monthly Medal and Putting were enjoying the improved conditions after contending with a couple of weeks of wet weather. Tony Murphy played the conditions to his advantage, and he came out on top by one. Breathing down his neck was Michael Ellis. Murphy and Ellis also picked up nearest the pin at the third and ninth. The pin at the 15th and the Approach shot on the second were claimed by A. Thompson. Stephen Hampstead took out the putting with 23. Golfers will be hoping those great conditions continue this Saturday for the Two Ball Ambrose competition. MOTO TRIALS THRILLS RETURN THE Australia Moto Trials return to the district this weekend. Riders from all states have nominated for the trials, to be held at Sweet’s family property on Nundubbermere Road just outside of Stanthorpe where onsite camping sites are still available for competitors and spectators. Riders will be able to get in some practice from 10am on Thursday and Friday. Gates open at 6am on Saturday morning. Machine examination and sign on commence at 7am before a Rider briefing at 9am and the official opening ceremony at 10am with competition getting underway at 10am. The 130 riders who have nominated will compete in a wide variety of events on bikes that will vary from classic to side car through to the most modern and sophisticated and modified machines and all types in between. Current Australian champions will be competing, and spectators will be treated to an incredible exhibition of style and bravery from some of the best riders in the country. Unlike most other forms of motorcycle sport, Moto Trials is not racing. It is simply a rider and bike pitted against the terrain and elements. It is a sport of balance, skill and concentration. One at a time, competitors will ride over an obstacle course of boulders, streams, hill climbs, logs, drop offs, and nearly anything else they can find. It is thrilling for not only competitors of all ages but also highly entertaining and thrilling for spectators. There are classes for everyone. From juniors of 16 years of age - down to barely walking, through

to Veterans from 40 to 70+. There are classes to cover all rider ability levels, with Expert, A, B, C, and Clubman/Novice levels. There are also classes for Masters (35+). Other classes include Sidecar, Post-Classic (twin shock) and Classic. Trials (specific) bikes are specially made high-tech machines. Very light (~70kg), low seat height and lots of power. While it is spectacular and sometimes appears dangerous at the top level, it is a very safe sport. The weekend’s event is hosted by the Queensland Trials Committee with the assistance of the Queensland Trails Clubs. There will be full catering facilities at the site. RUNNING THE GAUNTLET OF CONDITIONS ASSOCIATION croquet players were once again lucky to get a game in before the weather conditions deteriorated. Players planning to join the golf croquet group for a trip to Warwick on Thursday were less fortunate. Heather and Andrea Denkewitz had a narrow one-point win over Carol Verwey and Effey Russell. The final score 20hoop to 19. In the game, Russell had two breaks of three and Widderick r a break of three and a peel. (no, not orange lemon or mandarin - in golf croquet the term peel refers to scoring a point for a ball other than the striker’s by putting it through the next hoop in order.) Pat Schnoor took on Val Shephard and Margaret Dickenson and pegged out with 26. Included in her score were breaks of three and four. Margaret Dickenson also played well with breaks of five and three. On Wednesday morning the Golf Croquet crew were fortunate to get through a full morning’s play with rain beginning to fall as they were clearing the court. All players looked to be in good form and returning some very even scores. There were plenty of good scores and great shots but the highlight of the day had to be the record five hoops in one. Two by Teresa Pyne, and one each by Justin Liddy, Elaine Brown and Judy Lock. Relative newcomer, John Castles scored his first jump shot at his first attempt. Dianne Wren top scored in both games she played notching up a total of 15 hoops for the day. Results went the way of Shirley Page and Dianne Wren in the game of the day when they defeated Teresa Payne and Justin Liddy 13-9. Elaine Brown played two balls in a games

Australian Moto Trials Champion - Kyle Middleton.

against John and Marian Castles and scored an 8-7 win. She also top scored with six on the brown ball in this game. In the final games, John Castles and Judy Lock scored a narrow win 11-10 over Shirley Page and Elaine Brown11 - 10. Castles and Page shared the top scoring honours with six hoops each. Justin Liddy and Teresa Pyne finished their day with a 13-9 win over opponents Dianne Wren and Marian Castles. Golf croquet will be holding a Stanthorpe Friendship day on 6 October; more details as they come in. BORDER RUGBY LEAGUE CELEBRATE FORMER and current players, volunteers and supporters from all the BRL clubs came together on Saturday night to celebrate 20 years of the BRL competition. Throughout the course of the evening, the 2016 BRL trophies were presented and the Rep team of the last decade announced. There were few surprises when Tenterfield Tigers Jarrod McIntosh was name the BRL Player of the Year after an outstanding performance throughout the season. It was a big night for McIntosh who also collected the Jack Rush Memorial Trophy for Rep Player of the Year and was named the season’s leading try scorer and capped it off by being named in the Rep team of the decade. Inglewood youngster Brandon Sauverain was named as the Player of the Grand Final after what was an outstanding game. It was no surprise that he was also named as the Colt of the Year winning the Ron and Joan Moore Memorial Trophy. Brent Osborne who guided the Inglewood Roosters to a premiership in their comeback year to the BRL won Coach of the Year. Captain of the all-conquering Tenterfield Tigerettes, Meg Landers was a popular winner of the Ladies League Tag Player of the Year. Wayne Minns coach of the undefeated Tigerettes has been alongside the Tigerettes for all three seasons, and won the Ladies League tag Coach of the Year. Georgia O’Neill who had an outstanding game in the League Tag Grand Final picked up the award for the highest point scorer in the competition. After a tough season for the Wallangarra Club, the Ramettes coach Shane Binney was awarded the Club Person of the Year Trophy.

One of the most popular awards of the evening was presented to retiring (perhaps) Texas Terrier Tim Smith - The Iron Man Award. The team of the Rep Team of the decade 2007 - 2016 held few surprises. Brent Bennett (Roosters); Jason Cobon (Gremlins); Brad Crisp (Gremlins); Lucas Dearden (Tigers); Matt Gainey (Roosters); Matthew Hendry (Gremlins); Leon Karena (Gremlins) Jake Kelly (Tigers); Brett lambert (Cutters); Michael Marshall (Cutters); Jarrod McIntosh (Tigers); Brendan Minns (Tigers); Matthew Rouen (Rams); Nathan Shatte (Gremlins); Geoff Swan (Tigers); Coedie Tandy (Tigers and Cutters); John Trindall (Cutters; Jamie Watts (Cutters); Jason Wilmot (Gremlins). BRL Chairman Norm Crisp said 2016 had been a difficult season for the BRL, but there is plenty of positive talk around the 2017 season. COMING SOON AUSTRALIAN ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS NINE days of intense competition in the Australian National Orienteering Carnival will conclude with the Middle and Long Distance Championships to be held on the Granite Belt at Amiens on 1 October and the next day. Over 750 entries from all states and territories of Australia, as well as New Zealand and New Caledonia have already been received with more expected before the cut-off date. The Australian championships which will be hosted by Orienteering Queensland will run from Saturday 24 September to Sunday 2 October. The sprint events will be held on the Gold Coast followed by the Individual and Relay Events in the Scenic Rim district before wrapping up on the Granite Belt. The Boatfield and Cowley Road course at Amiens considered by many competitors as one of the best in the country. Competitors of all ages (up to the age of 90) have nominated - with New Zealand sending a contingent of 40 to take on the Aussies. For the Burrill family of Warwick, orienteering is a real family affair and they will be lining up in the Australian Championships after recently competing in the World Championships in Switzerland. If you would like more information on the Australian Championships or are keen to become involved as a volunteer, further details are available on the website http://www.auschamps2016. com/.
