CALLS are being made for an investigation into kangaroo control in and around Warwick’s Morgan Park motorsport and equestrian facility, amid safety concerns for competitors. The Southern Downs Regional Council’s Pest Management Working Group recently considered a motion for an investigation into the
safety issues posed by kangaroos, particularly on the popular Morgan Park Raceway. While the motion was voted down, Mayor Tracy Dobie says the matter would be looked at as part of the council’s overall pest management strategy. The Free Times has been told roos frequently pose a danger to drivers on the raceway and while

Backdown on backpacker tax Case
By Jeremy Sollars THE Federal Government has caved in on its plan to introduce a 32.5 per cent tax on backpacker workers. Instead, working holidaymakers will be taxed at 19 per cent from their first dollar earned. The government had expected to recoup $500 million from the higher tax rate. It will now increase the Passenger Movement Charge (PMC) by $5 to cover the change. The passenger movement charge is a tax payable by all passengers departing Australia on international flights or sea transport, whether or not the passenger intends to return to Australia. It was first introduced in 1995, and is currently set at $55. The tourism sector will get $10 million to market jobs to backpackers, Treasurer Scott Morrison has announced. It is understood legislation will be required to enact the new
tax arrangements. The move follows fury from horticultural producers across the country who rely on backpackers and a seasonal workforce to harvest produce, with many threatening not to plant this season if the tax went through at 32.5 per cent. But some in the industry fear that many potential overseas workers have already been scared off from travelling to Australia. The issue split the government, with National and Liberal backbenchers calling for a rethink, while Mr Morrison and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said any unintended negative consequences would be dealt with if and when they arose. Stanthorpe apple producer Rosie Savio - who employs backpackers all year round and currently has 20 such workers on her Pozieres property - said the backdown on the tax was the result the industry had been

Conference will go according to plan By Jeremy Sollars STANTHORPE has scored a major coup after being chosen to host a national town planners’ conference set down for late October. The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) has chosen Stanthorpe as the venue for its 2016 Rural and Regional Planning Conference, with around 150 professionals to hit town from across the country. It’s the first time the annual event has been held outside a metropolitan city. The PIA is one of the peak bodies for the property development industry nationally and is serious about putting focus on the challeng-
es facing rural and regional communities when it comes to making new development happen. The conference will be held between Wednesday 26 and Friday 28 October, at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism. While on the Granite Belt, conference delegates will have the opportunity to explore the region by way of a 15km cycling tour on the Wednesday afternoon before the official conference start, or a bus tour taking in Sutton’s Farm, The Big Apple Packing Shed and winery visits. The social program also includes a dinner on the Thursday night at

Sharkie life: it ain’t easy By Jeremy Sollars
Safety concerns have been raised over kangaroos at Morgan Park.
Roo cull call hotly debated From front page “There are more of them out there and they are getting bigger - it’s not uncommon to see 10 to 12 six-footers of a morning. “There can be a couple of hundred out there. “Culling could be the way to go - or you could fence the raceway off, but who at whose cost and how much?” Warwick and District Sporting Car Club secretary John Torr confirmed the club saw the roos as a genuine safety risk and has called on the council to investigate. While he stopped short of calling for a cull, Mr Torr said it was “very fortunate” there had not been a serious accident to date and urged action before the worst happened. “We agree it’s an issue and all of the options need to be looked at,” he told the Free Times. “It’s not something you’d want to see swept under the carpet. “We are the only raceway in Australia with kangaroo flags
and we have track monitors at the flag points who communicate by radio and watch for them during competition.” Morgan Park’s bushland location is situated next to a parcel of land traditionally known as “the kangaroo paddock”, which is State Government owned and was at one stage an environmental reserve. The Southern Downs Regional Council has the transfer of the parcel to its control listed as a high priority for lobbying with the State Government. Warwick Polocrosse Club president Les Fraser was adamant a kangaroo cull was the only answer, saying fencing would be too expensive to install and maintain. He said while kangaroos posed little or no direct threat to polocrosse competitors they left “a bloody mess” around the grounds and canteen area, and the club regularly held special working bees to rake up kangaroo droppings. “They need to be culled they were originally bred out there by the DPI who after they’d wasted ratepayers mon-
ey, they just pulled down the fencing and took off,” Mr Fraser said. “They are a real concern for the raceway - you could have a bloke out there on his own on a bike practising and he hits one. “Fencing would be an expensive option - it’d be cheaper and easier to cull them.” Mayor Tracy Dobie said she was not convinced culling was the best option, but agreed any safety concerns at Morgan Park needed to be given consideration. “Council has a pest management strategy in place for the entire region,” Cr Dobie said. “Kangaroos are a problem everywhere right now, along with other pests including wild dogs. “Council is keen to see that particular parcel of land at Morgan Park opened up for access by, for example, Scouting and cadet groups. “If there are safety concerns as have been outlined, these will be considered as part of our overall pest management strategy.”
BEING a Cronulla Sharks fan isn’t always easy - and it doesn’t help when most of your family supports the Dragons. Warwick’s Louise McVeigh (pictured front page) has been a die-hard Sharkies fan from the age of six - “since the Stevie Rogers days” - and is experiencing a combination of nerves and excitement ahead of Sunday night’s NRL Grand Final against the Melbourne Storm. For those who’ve been living under a rock or don’t follow the NRL, Cronulla have never won a grand final and have had their share of ups and downs, like most clubs. But Sharks fans have a special kind of loyalty and they’ve been patiently waiting their turn to live the fairytale. And while Melbourne has a narrow edge, at least as far as betting odds are concerned, 2016 could well be the year for Cronulla. “I’m not exactly sure how I’ll celebrate if we win but maybe it’s a good thing Monday is a public holiday,” Louise told the Free Times this week. “To be honest I’m happier we’re playing Melbourne - I was a bit more nervous about Canberra.” Son Fraser disagrees, saying the Storm is “definitely" the tougher outfit. Fraser - who openly concedes to having been “brainwashed” by his Sharks-mad mother - will be at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on the night with mates and is looking forward to taking in the atmosphere. He said most of the rest of the family, including his father George, were Dragons supporters but he had always stuck to his Cronulla guns. “I think we are definitely a real chance - I think we will want it a lot more than the Storm,” Fraser said. “There will be a lot of belief.” Louise’s grandson Cooper Locke was fairly quiet on the matter but appeared to appreciate the gravity of the situation during the Free Times chat and certainly looked the part in his white, blue and black Sharks outfit. The NRL Grand Final kicks
Swans fanatic and former Victorian Jake Peasnell has South Melbourne blood in his sporting veins. off at 7.15pm on Sunday. Meanwhile, on the AFL side of football matters local fans are gearing up for their own code’s grand final on Saturday. Jake Peasnell is the lone voice for the Sydney Swans in the Warwick AFL scene and says he is “pretty confident” of his club winning the flag this coming “one day in September” against the Western Bulldogs. The former Victorian - he hails from Rutherglen in the state’s north-east - says his love for the Swans has been something of a family tradition, not to say a religious creed, carried on from his grandparents who were South Melbourne followers back in the day before the shift to Sydney. “It really came from my mum’s side of the family,” Jake told the Free Times. “My grandma Lorna was a huge South Melbourne fan and it just got handed down from there.” “I’ve always been a Swans supporter.”
The Wickham Freightlines employee moved to Warwick in 2000 and is pretty sure he’s the only Swans supporter in the ranks of the Warwick Redbacks, saying most of his mates follow Brisbane and a few Geelong and other southern clubs, but he didn’t know of any Western Bulldogs followers in their midst. The Redbacks are playing cricket on Saturday, having recently formed a team for the local competition, so it’s unclear where and how they’ll take in the grand final action but Jake says the boys will “sort something out”. The Sydney Swans go in as the favourites on Saturday, winning their last premiership in 2012 against Hawthorn. For the Bulldogs it’s been 55 years since they last contested a grand final and if they win it will be the second premiership in the club’s history, since their 1961 win against Hawthorn. Saturday’s grand final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground kicks off at 2.30pm.

Bunnings plan to be decided By Jeremy Sollars A DECISION on the controversial new Bunnings site for Warwick is expected at next month’s Southern Downs Regional Council meeting. Public submissions on the plan for a new Bunnings on the flood plain at the corner of Canning and Condamine streets near Warwick East State School closed on 16 September. The Free Times asked the council how many submissions had been received but a spokeswoman said that detail would form part of the report to councillors ahead of the October meeting. It is understood, however, that at least a dozen business and property owners in the vicinity of the site have lodged objections, with at least one engaging a professional planning consultant from Brisbane to put their submission together. The council commissioned engineering consultants Jacobs Australia to prepare a flood impact assessment for the site, the report on which
was presented to the council in March. The report is based on the standard national flooding model which assumes the highest flood level ever recorded in Warwick has a 1 per cent chance of being exceeded in any given year, similar to the old “one in 100 year” flood scenario. While this is nationally accepted as the base model to calculate flood flows for specific locations, hydrological engineers warn it can encourage the notion that if such a flood were to occur communities are then safe for another 100 years. The Jacobs Report does not include any assessment of an extreme flood event, such as January 2011 in Warwick where the Condamine and adjoining Rosenthal, Swan, Farm and Emu Creek catchments filled rapidly over a short time, or the highest recorded flood for Warwick in 1976. Leading authorities - including the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist - advise councils and other agencies to consider a higher standard than the 1 per cent “exceedance”.
“Currently nearly everywhere in Australia the 1 per cent AEP event, or ‘one in 100 year flood’, with an appropriate additional height for buildings, is designated as having an ‘acceptable’ risk for planning purposes, regardless of the potential consequences of the flood,” the Chief Scientist’s advice reads. “There are often strong social and economic reasons for considering a higher standard than the 1 per cent AEP flood. “For example, in some locations flood levels associated with rarer floods are significantly higher and are likely to cause significant devastation. “Inundation of a particular location may have significant economic and social consequences for a much wider region.” It’s not the first time that Bunnings has run into trouble over building in a flood zone. In April last year the Bunnings outlet in Maitland in the New South Wales Lower Hunter Val-
ley was forced to shut down for months after a ‘superstorm’ deluge caused fill around drainage pipes to erode and a large section of the warehouse floor to crack. The store was built with a substantial amount of fill on a naturally low-lying site formerly occupied by the Maitland saleyards. Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore said at the time that the warehouse site had been developed “according to conditions laid down by the council and other government departments”. He acknowledged to local media that the site was “low lying in its natural state” with a permanent lagoon at its bottom end. But Cr Blackmore said the amount of rain which fell on Maitland during the storm was “much more than a one in 100 year” scenario. The Maitland Bunnings was re-opened late last year after extensive engineering treatments.
Art in all forms made Manifest polite and friendly.” A spokeswoman for the Manifest management team said there had been “a strong police presence throughout the festival” and said only a small percentage of attendees had been charged with drug or alcohol offences. “While we cannot control what people bring to the site, we are confident that all people in attendance had a safe and enjoyable time,” she said. “All precautions were taken to ensure the site was kept in a pristine condition, with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers working tirelessly, who we couldn’t produce this event without.” She said Manifest featured up-andcoming and established international, interstate and local acts “with a blend
of electronic and live bands across a plethora of musical genres”. “Manifest 2016 also hand-picked an array of the most talented theatre, dance, comedy, fire, acrobatic, aerial and roving performers from south-east Queensland and beyond,” she said. Neighbouring property owner Amanda Keogh praised the festival organisers, noting the “amazing art installations and sculptures that beamed at night”. “We really enjoyed the markets - I bought something different every time we walked through,” she said. “The clothing, handmade jewellery, food and craft stalls showed there are so many talented people out there. “Our own food stall raised over $1500 for the Wildash Rural Fire Brigade.

CHERRABAH Resort at Elbow Valley was home last weekend to Manifest 2016, a three-day celebration of music, arts, colour and creativity which drew more than 700 visitors. Cherrabah operations manager Fran Edney said she was pleased with the outcome of the festival. “A lot of planning went into this event working together with both Manifest and Queensland Police Services to ensure a safe environment,” she said. “It was a successful event with no major issues where security or medics were required. “Money was brought into the region through the hire of event equipment, supplies including water, food and fuel plus the incidentals. “The people who attended the festival as a whole were well behaved,

Fitzroy Street will re-open in early October.
Re-opening of street set By Jeremy Sollars FITZROY Street is expected to be re-opened to traffic within the next fortnight, Southern Downs Regional Council has confirmed. The section of the street between Palmerin and Guy streets has been closed off while Rose City Shoppingworld owner the McConaghy Group completes works associated with the $40 million expansion of the centre. While traffic will be able to access Fitzroy Street after the re-opening, the footpath will
remain closed as excavation works continue on a new access ramp to the centre’s underground carpark. A spokesman for the McConaghy Group confirmed to the Free Times that “a portion” of Fitzroy Street would be taken as part of the carpark access. The spokesman said the street closure had also been “to facilitate the relocation of key services provided by council”. “Completion of the Rose City redevelopment is expected in mid-to-late 2017 and will
employ up to 300 construction workers,” the spokesman said. “Local trades are used wherever possible. “The redevelopment is being staged to keep as much of the centre functioning as possible until full completion. “The Coles re-opening will be completed in the final stages. “Formal marketing and negotiations with possible new tenants is underway and announcements of new tenancies will be made at the appropriate time.”

Dreadful drop
A QUESTION to our local representative, Mr Littleproud. Why can’t governments supply better, more comfortable ambulances? The vehicles supplied are no more than a modern horse-drawn dray. So let’s not worry about inland railways and supply our ambos with a much more comfortable vehicle. Maybe if our pollies took a trip in one of these ambulances they might change their minds, but maybe if they had to use an ambulance they would fly in a helicopter. As I had to ride in one of these vehicles two and a half years ago and a friend of mine had to use one of late his comment was, “I didn’t know we still had 1930 to 1940s ambulances”. So, come on Mr Littleproud, think about our wonderful ambos - put your hand up in Parliament and see how good you are and change these rough delivery vans for something more comfortable for the ambos and patients. Get the local mayor and yourself behind something more useful. I don’t think the inland rail will eventuate in your time as it has been going on for too long now. Once again I would like to say three cheers to our local ambos who do a wonderful job in vintage equipment. W Long, Karara.
WITH the water costs per kilolitre on top of the highest rates in Queensland, are you or is anyone able to drink this in Warwick? It tastes toxic, poisonous and unsafe. Donna Nevin, Killarney.
Laid to rest IN THE Letter to the Editor section on 22 September 2016, assertions have been made by Melba Morris that are significantly incorrect and untrue in relation to a number of issues. Since being elected to council I have not been involved in any decision-making processes that are linked to the Cherrabah Resort or the Darwalla chicken hatchery at Allora. The hatchery was given the approval it is acting upon in 2011, as quoted on the front page of the Southern Free Times 22 September 2016. It is disappointing that this level of fabrication has been printed in a respected community newspaper and that the assertions put forward by Melba Morris are taken to be true and correct when, in fact, they are completely false and incorrect. Yve Stocks, Councillor, Southern Downs Regional Council.

Mayor railway push By Jeremy Sollars

SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie is standing firm in the face of the Australian Rail Track Corporation, demanding options to bring the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail line as close as possible to Warwick be fully investigated by the railway giant. Cr Dobie met on Tuesday with ARTC chief executive officer John Fullerton and other senior ARTC officials in Warwick and said the discussions over inland rail options for Warwick - and better consultation with local communities - were constructive. The ARTC has come under fire in recent weeks for presenting an inland rail route bypassing Warwick and running through the Millmerran district as a fait accompli, despite other potential southern Queensland routes having been identified and avoiding massive floodplain works such as those which would be required at Millmerran. The Millmerran route, importantly, does not connect with Toowoomba’s new Wellcamp Airport, which many have criticised as a major deficiency, including Cr Dobie, who labelled the omission as “crazy”. One of the cheaper and easier route options identified in a 2015 report highlighted last week by State MP Lawrence Springborg involves the line running through Karara and Leyburn. But calls to bring the line even closer to Warwick have come from local industry leaders and producers and Cr Dobie said she supports such a move. Speaking with the Free Times a short time after Tuesday’s meeting

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie has demanded Warwick be factored in for the Melbourne to Brisbane Inland Rail project. Picture: ARTC with the ARTC, Cr Dobie said she had insisted that the option of bringing a “loop” of the line and sidings through the Leslie and Toolburra districts just west of Warwick be put on the table urgently. The mayor said Mr Fullerton and the other ARTC officers had agreed to investigate and cost out the option “by the end of December”. When asked if she felt the ARTC was serious about looking into the Warwick option, Cr Dobie’s response was “absolutely”. “This is about giving local producers - such as grain and livestock - and manufacturers the opportunity to move their products on the inland rail network,” Cr Dobie said. “There is also potentially a passenger dimension if the line goes through to Wellcamp Airport, which is absolutely essential. “Council has made it clear (to the
ARTC) that we believe the Southern Downs has been left out of consideration for the inland railway and that the consultation of potentially affected communities so far has been inadequate. “If we are successful in achieving a route which comes close to Warwick there are going to be landholders who will be affected, so the consultation needs to be open and up-front. “The ARTC have made it clear they want to finalise the route by the end of December and we will be keeping up the pressure for Warwick to be fully considered.” Cr Dobie conceded a much earlier proposal for the inland rail to come through Warwick itself and east through the range to head into Brisbane from the south was well and truly “off the table”. “The elevations which would have been required for that would

have simply been too difficult from an engineering perspective and too expensive,” she said. Meanwhile Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio has responded to suggestions that he stands to benefit personally from an inland rail route through Millmerran where he and his family own 1400 hectares of farming property including a quarry. Cr Antonio told the Free Times his interests were “available for all to see on council’s pecuniary interests register”. “The Australian Rail Track Corporation have been given a task by the Federal Government to deliver the most efficient route between Melbourne and Brisbane,” Cr Antonio said. “They are using international expertise in engineering and hydrology to ensure the best possible outcome.”

Casey’s tips
Party Venues Tips to organise a perfect work party WHETHER an organiser and event planner at heart, someone who just loves Christmas or you’ve returned to work late to find you got stuck with the job of organising the office Christmas party here are some handy hints to help get you through it unscathed ... Start early Whatever time you think you’ve got, forget it. Start as early as you possibly can because, ultimately, you’ll be waiting on responses from others plus
the earlier you start the more chances you have of securing your preferred venue and entertainment. Set the date At your Christmas party you’ll want as many employees to show up as possible. Again, start early and spread the word. Send out a mass email with some suggested dates and pick the date that fits with the majority. You’ll also want to ensure it’s a date that fits with the boss. The budget
Find out what kind of budget you have, this will set out everything from the kind of venue you can get to what you can serve. Ask the boss for a quote and stick to it. If you’re having a more formal get together at a fancy venue then it’s not out of the question to get the employees to chip in, within reason of course. If you’re heading that way then make sure it’s something everyone can afford. Find a venue Again, the earlier you plan this
one, the better. Every office like yours will be planning similar Christmas parties all at the same time, so begin early to secure your preferred destination. Your budget will pretty much decide what kind of venue you can get, whether it’s a fancy restaurant, hall or even in your own office. The menu This part is relatively easy if your venue is a restaurant, if not hire a caterer to plan the menu and always make sure you know everyone’s dietary needs, ensuring everyone has
something to eat. If you’re having a more formal sit down meal rather than a buffet or cocktail style event, it’s a good idea to have some kind of seating arrangement. Alcohol Some company Christmas parties go entirely without alcohol these days, ensuring a happy and safe environment, however if you’re planning on serving alcohol you’ll need to plan in advance what you’ll be serving and how you’ll be paying. Your budget will decide ...

A wheely good one
★★★★★★★★
Casey’s tips
★★★★★★★★ ARIES—March 21-April 20 A loved one may be more independent than usual, but if anyone can appreciate this quality, it’s you. Relatives insist on having their way. Your career or educational prospects brighten. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 Specialization is the key word. It’s better to do one or two things well than to spread yourself too thin. Home improvement plans are spotlighted through the week. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Your creative power could be a plus and a negative this week. A romantic misunderstanding is short lived. Make an effort to share centre-stage with a shy but loyal and understanding person. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Recent disputes in the community come to a harmonious conclusion, thanks to your imput. A friend may come to you with an unusual dilemma. Projects involving writing proceed smoothly. LEO—July 23-August 22 A shaky relationship stabilizes thanks in part to your good sense of humour. A surprise expense may arrive by the weekend. A financial idea seems plausible but requires more research. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 Renewed determination helps you conclude a difficult and tedious project. Travel choices may require a review. A platonic relationship is highlighted, but don’t take romance for granted. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 A rival surprises you with a willingness to see your point of view. Delays are inevitable this week. Financial expectations become more realistic. Your status in the community improves. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Diverse activities keep you alert and active this week. Family obligations are carried out more easily. Household burdens increase. At work, you may need a little help and it’s on the way. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Combined efforts lead to accomplishments ahead of schedule. Shared financial arrangements may require an immediate review and frank discussion. Travel opportunities are highlighted after the weekend. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Novel ideas win you points at home or at the workplace. Academic interests are spotlighted. An unusual project may be launched before the weekend. In finance, prudence is the key. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 Your creative spirit soars, but remember, a light touch is the key. In friendship, a laboured approach may not be an effective one. Honours come your way after the weekend. PISCES—February 20-March 20 A natural approach is the key, whether decorating, writing, or speaking your mind. Shopping ventures prove successful, but be sure to compare prices. A recent enterprise starts to pay off. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Diplomatic, or merely secretive? Only those who know you well, know for sure. You love beautiful objects, you love to travel and though your circle of friends is not large, you love your close companions intensely. A new opportunity for travel could evolve. A career decision requires special review. 12324394-PB39-16
Warwick Dragway will fire up with the VW Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. WARWICK Dragway plays host this weekend to a uniquely Australian motorsport event - the VW Warwick Weekend. To be held at the Morgan Park Dragway over Saturday and Sunday, the event is now in its 11th year for Warwick, and is considered to be the nation’s premier VW motorsport weekend. The programme will start with a Dyno session at the track on Friday evening, with Diesel Tune bringing along their mobile dyno. On Saturday, the traditional morning street parade and static display will be held in the War-
wick CBD at Leslie Park from 9.30am to 11am. There will be a Show n Shine at the Dragway from 9am to 3pm on Sunday. On Saturday, scrutineering happens back at the track from 11am until noon, after which there will be a driver’s briefing on the staging lanes. Unlimited practice and qualifying will follow the briefing from 1pm to 5pm. On Sunday, an additional hour of practice will be conducted in from 9am to 10am, followed by a four-round Round Robin competition with a final. This year there will be two finals for the Top
VW Shootout, a final for normally-aspirated cars and one for forced induction. Admission is $10 for adults and children under 13 are free. A canteen will be operating all weekend. Warwick Dragway will also host Drag Fest on 15-16 October - keep an eye out in the Free Times for more. For more information about the VW Weekend and other Dragway events visit www.warwickdragway.com

Rod hops off rabbit board By Jeremy Sollars ROD Towner has called it a day after 26 years with the Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board. The former Lockyer Shire councillor was chairman of the board for 13 years between 2000 and 2013 and was most recently Deputy Chairman. A special presentation was held at the board’s headquarters on Wood Street last week to acknowledge Mr Towner’s many years of service and his contribution to controlling one the great scourges of Australian agriculture.
“We could be absolutely decimated without the (rabbit) fence,” he told the Free Times. “The Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley has some of the most valuable farming land in the whole of Australia. “The board has been extremely fortunate to have had the services of our many dedicated workers to maintain the fence. “It can be very lonely work at times and our people do a marvellous job.” Mr Towner said continuous education of landowners was critical to keeping the
rabbit problem under control and warned people against capturing baby rabbits and releasing them. He said he was hopeful that Lockyer Valley councillor Janice Holstein would step up and replace him on the board. Environmental damage from rabbits costs the Australian economy more than $600 million every year. The maximum penalty for keeping, selling or releasing rabbits is $44,000. For more information about the Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board visit www.ddmrb.org.au.
Years of commitment: Rod Towner with Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board member Ross Bartley.

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
AND so our grand finalists have been decided although some might say that the script has been written for several weeks. Once again no team outside the top four has made it to the main event and what an event it is shaping as. Will the fairy-tale for the long suffering Cronulla Sharks finally have a happy ending, will porch lights all over the shire be extinguished or will it be the clinical professional Melbourne outfit making its seventh grand final appearance who dance off with the prize. We are only several sleeps and 80 minutes from the answer. The final composition of the two teams will probably not be known until shortly before the teams take to the field on Sunday the match officials have been announced. Taking the centre will be Matt Cecchin and Ben Cummins. Once upon a time in previous GFs the referees would hardly have rated a mention. Let’s hope on Sunday evening we all need to be reminded that they and their friends were even there. There are many fans especially north of the border who simply don’t like the Shark’s players but most fans would agree that Cronulla deserve a premiership win and they have certainly earned the right to challenge in 2016. In Friday’s nights Preliminary final Cronulla were brimming with energy and confidence after their week off. In contrast the Cowboys looked spent. Johnathon Thurston and the majority of his team mates looked out on their feet after 15 minutes as a tough finals season finally caught up with them and landed like a ton of bricks on their shoulders. In the other Prelim Melbourne was probably not at its best but it was a case of cream rising to the top when it mattered most. All the emotion will be with the Sharks on Sunday - how they handle it will go a long way to determining the winner. Both sides have their superstars and their up and coming super stars. The electrifying Melbourne wingers are sure to light up the game at some point. Valentine Holmes Feki and Barba will try to weave some magic while the newest Cameron on the block, Munster will be hoping to instil some horror into the Sharks. The guile of and experience of Cronk and Smith will be pitted against Ennis the Menace and Gallen public enemy number one north of the border. I doubt the game can out do the 2015 grand final for sheer theatre but another amazing chapter waits to be written in rugby league folklore. My heart hopes for the sake of Sharks fans that the fairy-tale has a happy ending but my head is leaning towards another wonderful performance from Smith Cronk Bellamy and Co. I’ll be taking up an early position in my favourite chair with ample refreshments on hand and looking forward to a full day of exciting football. - Casey CONDITIONS IDEAL FOR TRIALS THE Granite Belt turned on almost perfect conditions for the 2016 Lucas Oils Logan Glass Australian Trials Championships last weekend. Kyle Middleton took out his fourth straight Australian Trials Championship aboard The Hell Team sponsored Gas Gas 300 Factory. Middleton opened his championship campaign with a clean score card after day one. Some tougher sections and some fatigue saw
Kyle Middleton displaying his winning form at the 2016 Australian Moto Trials on the Granite Belt. the Newcastle rider drop a meagre seven points on day two. Middleton’s closest rival in the Open Solo class was Tasmanian Chris Bayles (Gas Gas) who scored 41 points for the weekend. Colin Zarczynski rounded out the podium on 43 points after debuting the new Vertigo Trials bike. Highlighting the quality of the competitors in action on the weekend the winner Middleton has recently returned from competing in the Italian Trial World Championships. Middleton is widely recognized by his peers as one of the hardest working trials riders in the country and well deserving of his fourth Australia title. The top class riders were joined by an enthusiastic group of local competitors and plenty of spectators. Organisers were full of praise for the Granite Belt course which they said had a great combination of rocky and rough terrain. Despite the recent heavy rain the course stood up to competition well and there were no serious injuries reported over the weekend. THOMPSON AND BECKETT WINNERS MICHAEL Thompson and Tod Beckett returned a winning score in the Canadian Foursome played in Stanthorpe last Saturday. The pair played a steady front none with birdies at seven and eight. A back nine score of 39 secured the win for the pair and sees their names added to the Howard and Sons Cups. Runners up Mike McAuliffe and Santo Cavallaro also played well. Pin shots went to Michael Thompson at three, Ian Pickering at 12 and Wes Smith at 17. The father son combination of Wes Smith and Hayden Smith collected pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14. In the run down, it was a ball each to Mark Hendry, Ian Harvey, Keith Jones and Ken Hinze. The ladies also played Canadian foursomes and it was the team of Linda Kelly and Kay Webb winning the day by a good margin from runners up Lyn Ludlow and Rachael Hendry. Neta Thouard held the ladies’ pin at 12 and Helen Jones had best approach at 17. Run downs in the ladies event went to Margie Locke and Helen Jones. Many thanks to the boys from Howard and Son Mitre 10 for their sponsorship of this very popular event and to Ian Harvey who handled the presentations at the end of play. September it seems is coming swiftly to an end and that means play this weekend will be for the October Monthly Medal and is sponsored by 4 Waters Supplies.
Swedish visitor Carolina Andersson added an international flavour to the Inglewood Action Pistol events. There is a time sheet on the board and players are reminded tee off reverts to the summer time of 11.30 am. Dates for golfer’s diaries include the upcoming mixed foursomes and the Open carnival. Time sheets for both these events are on the board. PISTOLS POPULAR THE fourth weekend of each month marks pistol weekend on the range at Inglewood SSAA. It is always a popular weekend of events and competitions were held on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday it was Ray Dudgeon who won the 25 metre standard pistol event out scoring Vamshi Gandreth and Tom Donald. Glen Holmes showed his liking for the 50 metre slow fire event when he defeated Tom Donald and sharing third spot were Vamshi Gandreth and Ross Jackson. Tom Donald is always thereabouts in these events and grabbed a win in the 50 metre Gongs. Sharing second place were a trio of shooters Glen Holmes, Ray Dudgeon, Ross Jackson. Third place went to Michael Tweedie. In the overall standings it was a win to Vamshi Gandreth with Ray Dudgeon and Tom Donald
taking out the minor placings, Some black powder silhouette fun followed to finish off an enjoyable day. On Sunday it was more of the same. Tom Donald grabbed an early win in the 25 metre standard pistol defeating Ross Jackson and Peter Jones. Peter Jones was only just warming up as he went on to win the 50 Metre Slow Fire and 50 metre Silhouette events leaving Tom Donald and Ross Jackson to share the minor placings. Jones also won the overall event with Tom Donald runner up and Ross Jackson in third placing. Capping off an excellent day Jones also won the Action Pistol event. Placegetters were Ross Jackson and Lynne Shepherd. This Sunday is clay target day at the club and a reminder visitors to the club are always welcome. Last weekend the club welcomed Swedish visitor Carolina Andersson and from closer to home Jessica Croft from Inglewood. Andrea Denkewitz, Pat Schnoor and Les Williams teamed up against Margaret Dickenson, Heather Widderick and John Draper. Both teams won two games each and scores were generally close. Saturday afternoon players heading to the Toowoomba this weekend for the annual Gateball tournament took the opportunity to get some practice. FAIRWAYS TOUGH MEMBERS at the Wallangarra Golf Club played a two ball Ambrose competition last weekend on a course where the fairways were playing tough following the recent rain. Players, however, were relishing the return to sunny conditions and returned some good scores.
The eventual winners were B Black and Steve Hampstead. In a result that went down to the wire the pair finished one shot ahead of K Williams and A Thompson. On a tough day only three pins went off. Thompson picked up the third and Hampstead claimed the ninth and the approach shot on the second. This week members will be playing for the Monthly Medal and Putting competition sponsored by the Wallangarra Railway. A reminder to all the members that the 36 Hole Foursome Championships will be held on the 16 September so arrange partners early and get nominations in. A barbecue will be held following the day’s play. WARWICK VOLUNTEER RECOGNISED NETBALL in Warwick is growing in leaps and bounds and much of the success can be attributed to Linda Bunch who works tirelessly for the association. Last Saturday night it was no surprise to many of her counterparts in Warwick when she was named Netball Queensland Volunteer of the Year. Alongside Bunch, who was one of three grand finalists, was former Australian captain and Allora’s favourite daughter Laura Geitz who was MC. Geitz said the award was great recognition for the wonderful contribution made by Linda. IDEAL CONDIITONS FOR SMALL FIELD ONLY a small field of sporters enjoyed the ideal conditions on Sunday morning for a round of golf on the Stanthorpe course which looks in great conditions following the recent rain. Taking out the win last Sunday was Terry Byrnes who defeated runner up Phil Zikan. The run-downs went to John Walsh and Angelo Maugeri. Dick Hilton returned the Best Gross. Dave Williams took the Pin Shot on the third and snuck off with a meat tray in hand .The Pro Pin went unwanted. Aaron Simmers was the other meat tray winner. Sporters will once again tee off on Sunday between 8am and 8.30am and, of course, visitors are always welcome. GALLOWAY CAPS OFF GREAT YEAR COWBOYS captain Dylan Galloway capped off a successful 2016 season to be named the Warwick Cowboy’s Footballer of the Year at the annual club presentation evening at the Warwick Clubhouse at Fr Ranger Oval on Friday night. Galloway was a worthy winner of the award after returning to the Cowboys after several seasons in the Intrust Super Cup. Galloway was praised for the level of professionalism he has brought to the club both at training and on the field. His attitude has been instrumental in attracting new players to the club and he is already talking to players about the 2017 season. The Peter Small memorial for A Grade Best and Fairest was won by Jamie Abbas. Dan Watson was named Colt of the Year winning the Max Thorley memorial Trophy. Carmel Cochran memorial Trophy for outstanding achievement. WEATHER CAUSES MORE DISPRUTIONS GOLF Croquet players will certainly be pleased with the recent change in the weather conditions after they suffered yet another wash out last week due to rain. The chilly weather on Thursday did not prevent a hardy group from bracing the conditions to get in a few games. Playing triples Elaine Brown and Justin Liddy defeated Dianne Wren, Teresa Pyne and Marian Castles 7-5. The best player in this game was on the losing team. Di Wren who scored all five hoops for her team. In game two Wren and Liddy combined for a 7-4 win over their opponents. The unpleasant conditions eventually drove the players off the court. There were two Association Croquet games last week where the winners pegged out with a full score of 26. In the first game it was Effey Russell who defeated Val Richards 26-11. The team of Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick defeated Val Shepherd and Jenny Tunbridge 26-13. In this game Pat Schnoor head breaks of six and four in her score.
