■ Pensioner jailed for scalding partner...

Regime of abuse By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Celebrating with a roar! Doveton residents came together on Friday 23 September to celebrate all that is great about their community. Doveton cousins Blade and Andre were among the suburb’s younger residents who enjoyed the festivites at Doveton Neighbourhood Learning Centre. ■ More pictures page 7.

A 59-year-old Doveton pensioner has been jailed for deliberately scalding his de facto partner with boiling coffee, smothering her with a pillow and threatening to kill her in a sustained regime of family violence. Gordon Austin was jailed for 18 months - followed by a two year community corrections order - after pleading guilty to four assault charges, threat to kill, intentionally causing injury and cannabis possession at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard on 26 September. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Austin’s consistent assaults - including two strikes to the partner’s face in the past year - was at the “higher end” of family violence. With a previous conviction for injuring the partner in 2010, it added up to six years of “abuse - verbal and physical”, Mr Vandersteen said. “If you assaulted (your partner) once (like this) you’d be looking at a term of jail. “At what point would it stop?” Austin - a cannabis and ice addict - was psychologically assessed as a medium-to-high risk of re-offending due to his lack of insight, Mr Vandersteen noted. “You’re a clear risk of re-offending if you don’t engage in treatment and rehabilitation.” However, Austin’s remorseless views on the incidents had tempered in recent weeks. The court had heard that in June, Austin had microwaved a cup of coffee to a hot temperature and screamed that he’d hurl it on the victim’s face. Austin then threw it on her leg, burning and blistering her through her pants. On 7 July, Austin accused the victim of seeing another man. He grabbed her by the hair, threw her against a wall, and spat in her face. “You haven’t seen anything yet. I’ll kill you,” he told her. On his arrest, he was found with 45 grams of cannabis in zip-lock bags. He showed no remorse, and was aggressive towards police, the court was told. Mr Vandersteen had earlier handed down a four-year full intervention order protecting the partner. Austin is due for release on 11 January, 2018. His corrections order includes drug and mental health treatment, and judicial monitoring.

CASEY COUNCIL ELECTIONS - 2016

Chris Andrews

Rafal Kaplon

Candidates make their pitch FOUR OAKS WARD This week, voters in Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren North, Lysterfield South and Harkaway will be receiving ballot papers for the 2016 Casey Council elections. Don’t feel too lost when you survey the field of 21 candidates in Four Oaks Ward. Only 11 of the candidates were organised, diligent and committed enough to respond to Star News’s survey, most within a 24-hour deadline. Take a read and see which candidate will stand up for you. Who do you trust to deliver your sports grounds, pools, libraries, garbage services, local roads and affordable rates? In the survey’s answers, candidates either follow different streams of Christianity or don’t have a place of worship. Some candidates reveal a truly shoestring budget for their campaign, others spend thousands - thanks to fund-raisers, “friends” and a bank loan. Chris Sargeant deserves kudos for naming and detailing his donors. Contenders have also proposed quite a few original projects and rates-saving measures. Below is a heavily edited version of statements. For each candidates’ full statements, go to the story on the Starcommunity.com.au website.

can do is advocate. Any proposition by any candidate otherwise would be a political stunt.

Survey respondents: Chris Andrews, Brian Oates, John Glazebrook, Shar Balmes, Rosalie Crestani, Richard Barrow, Rafal Kaplon, Nikolaous Palatsides, Chris Sargeant (20 minutes late), Bill Klemmer (six hours late), Barry Erlenwein (26 hours late) No reply: Dominik Lipski, Natasha Mirra, Rick Beeby, Rod Bagon, Afroz Ahmed, Bart Tyszka, Milla Gilich, Andrew Lawler, Nicholas Juricevic, Lyndon Samuel (sent an election statement instead)

JOHN GLAZEBROOK What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: Sustainable Population Australia Place of Worship: As an atheist my faith is in science, ideas and logic. Campaign sponsors and donors: I have no sponsors and pay all my expenses. Campaign cost/budget: My expenses so far are below $1000 and my budget is $2000. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Improve council’s productivity; Impact poker machine addiction; Open up public Question Time on council so that any resident can interact with council. Three ways to make council budget savings: Prioritise spending by reducing spending on nonessential projects. Cut out all council junkets immediately. Seek more funding from government grants and developers and less from ratepayers in future. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Little more than a political stunt. Casey Council specialises in distractions because our councillors lack the political capacity to address the real structural issues impacting on Casey residents. Law-and-order solutions: Firstly law and order is a state government responsibility. But Casey is likely to experience more crime as our population increases. We need a cap on population growth. SHAR BALMES (preferences Barrow and five others)

ROSALIE CRESTANI (preferences Kaplon) What ward/municipality do you live in: I have lived in Four Oaks but currently just over the border Political party membership: Rise Up Australia Party but running as an Independent Place of Worship: Catch the Fire Ministries, Hallam Campaign sponsors and donors: Parents, family, friends, etc Campaign cost/budget: Approximately $6200 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Increased safety support for residents; 1001 steps at Narre Warren North/Harkaway; and Endeavour Hills Town Centre expansion. Three ways to make council budget savings: Review services; support continued restructure; and support continued efficiency and effectiveness review. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Fully support any message regarding the increasingly dire circumstances of residents’ safety and security. Law-and-order solutions: Support police; continue advocating for enforcement resources; neighbourhood watch support and introduce an array of new community safety ideas/measures. RICHARD BARROW (preferences Balmes and five others) What ward/municipality do you live in: Berwick Political party membership: None Place of Worship: Nil. Campaign sponsors and donors: Self-funded with friends and family 1202687-PB45-15

CHRIS ANDREWS (preferences Kaplon, Crestani, Beeby) What ward/municipality do you live in: Edrington, on the border of Four Oaks Political party membership: Nil Place of Worship: Nil Campaign sponsors and donors: Nil - self funded Campaign cost/budget: Confidential Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Good governance, make council more accountable and keep rates at or below CPI. Three ways to make council budget savings: Cost efficiencies, targeted savings, renegotiate service contracts, prioritise capital works program and operating budget, sell off under-utilised assets Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Ridiculous - halfmast is a sign of mourning and should not be used for political purposes Law-and-order solutions: Save for local laws, law enforcement is a State or Federal government function. Accordingly as a councillor and as a council all we

BRIAN OATES What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: ALP Place of Worship: Non evangelical secularist Campaign sponsors and donors: Campaign cost/budget: $1000 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Change the toxic and combative culture in Casey Council over the past four years; Make Council more financially responsible with ratepayers money and aim to work within the rate cap; Catch up with some of the neglected existing facilities and infrastructure, not letting vacant Council properties stand idle. Three ways to make council budget savings: Review current finances and obligations such as debts and regulatory payments; Review business cases for sales and use of unallocated funds; Review contractor arrangements and costs particularly on the maintenance area. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: A pathetic and meaningless political stunt. Law-and-order solutions: I have previously proposed Industrial Area Security arrangements for Casey. With all CSOs in operation it might be a good time to raise that proposal again.

What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: None Place of Worship: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Fox Road, Narren Warren North) Campaign sponsors and donors: Generous friends who have donated their time, talents and homes, holding a series of fund-raisers. Campaign cost/budget: To date, a little over $4000 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Immediate upgrades to sports facilities at Jack Thomas Reserve and Sydney Pargeter Reserve; Road congestion; Tackling the rising rate of domestic violence. Three ways to make council budget savings: Greater community consultation to ensure planned spending is in line with what the residents actually want; Taking energy-saving measures and more fully utilise natural sources (ie. “Going green“); Invite industry and large local business to support or fund community programs that will benefit residents. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: As a symbolic gesture I think Council showed support and sensitivity to the victims of crime by lowering Casey’s flag. Law-and-order solutions: City councils control only local laws, but can advocate to State and Federal levels for increased police numbers and fully staffed police stations. As a community we can be more vigilant about reporting crime and being aware of potential concerns. Council can implement and support existing crime prevention programs.

Are your

TEETH MISSING?

Campaign cost/budget: To be determined Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: More shared paths for cycling and jogging, including links to Lysterfield Lake; An increase in equestrian paths and trails; New rugby union fields at Frog Hollow Reserve. Three ways to make council budget savings: Moving more of council’s transactional services to lower-cost online and digital delivery; Support a review of council services with an understanding of the community appetite for any service reductions; Investigate more public-private partnerships for infrastructure and facilities. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: On its own, a symbolic gesture; in concert with the other actions implemented at the same time, it garnered increased media attention to the call for improved police resources. Law-and-order solutions: Advocating to State Government for increased police resources; Keeping the Endeavour Hills police station open 24/7 and appropriately staffed; Investigate the use of smart-city technology solutions. RAFAL KAPLON (preferences Crestani and Andrews) What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: Former ALP, joined Liberal Party two months ago, running as Independent Place of Worship: Attends Catholic Church in Keysborough for Easter and Christmas Campaign sponsors and donors: Fully funding my own re-election campaign, with help of bank loan Campaign cost/budget: About $10,000 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: A library upgrade including new community spaces and neighbourhood centre; Upgrading Heatherton and Hallam North roads intersection to traffic lights; The development of Bay View Park and 1001 Steps at the old tip site in Narre Warren North. Three ways to make council budget savings: Continuing effectiveness and efficiency reforms of Council operations that I initiated to deliver significant long-term savings; Elimination of all cost-shifting from State and Federal governments by handing back responsibility for associated services to those governments; Upgrade existing facilities where possible to avoid the high establishment cost of new facilities. I’m against interstate and overseas travel by councillors. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Personally, I am against the use of the half-mast flag as part of political advocacy. Should only be reserved as a symbol of respect or mourning. Law-and-order solutions: I have done my part through advocacy to the State Government and developing close working relationships with local police. I have successfully introduced an annual meeting between the Council, local area commander and senior sergeants from around Casey. These actions and existing relationships need to be continued and developed further to gain substantial community outcomes.

A proclamation having been duly issued under the Act, dated 29 September 1916, calling upon: All men who on the second day of October 1916 are of the age of 21 years and upwards and under 35 years, who are unmarried or widowers without children, to enlist and serve as required. Persons liable are hereby required to report at 9am on 5 October 1916 at shire halls in the district of Flinders. Any person who

fails to enlist when required shall be liable to imprisonment. JA Walker Lieutenant Assistant Military Registrar Flinders Military sub-district

50 years ago 4 October 1966 Shires a part of Melbourne? The entire areas of Berwick and Cranbourne shires could be included in the Melbourne Metropolitan Planning Area within 25 years. Portions of these shires and all of Knox and Sherbrooke shires could be included within a few years. This has been suggested in a report by the Town and Country Planning Association to the Minister for Local Government, Mr Hamer. The report said: “The metropolitan planning area should be such that the planning authority has effective control and will not

have to face a repetition of the problem of being unable to cope with development outside the boundaries of the planning area, as is now the case.” At last - high school will be bigger Long-awaited improvements to Dandenong High School seem certain to be underway before the end of the year.

This category includes parking at an expired meter, parking illegally in permit zones, not paying the fee and parking for a period longer than fixed. Motorists will be hit even more for parking fines which fall under state laws. Fines for parking in no standing and clearway zones have jumped to $100, up from $40.

20 years ago 7 October 1996 Watch Out: Fines Hike Motorists who fail to heed parking laws will be slugged with fatter fines. Greater Dandenong Council last Wednesday began issuing the new fines which have been increased by up to 66 per cent. The council’s residential amenity supervisor, Mr Peter Halliday, said level one restrictions, which come under local laws, would be increased from $25 to $35.

3 October 2011 Rain reigns Greater Dandenong experienced its wettest September day since 1984 last Wednesday when 37 millimetres of rain dumped on the city in 24 hours, causing minor flooding as drains struggled to cope with the downpour. Greater Dandenong has already well exceeded its average monthly rainfall of 66 millimetres for September, with 80 millimetres recorded up until 9am last Friday.

Bush spread out for miles around The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. We explored almost to their source the pristine Eumemmerring and Dandenong creeks. We wandered the almost virgin bush of the Police Paddocks and the foothills of the Dandenongs as if they were our own back yard. We roamed for miles through bush-covered hills and gullies filled with tree ferns. We encountered acres of tall gun-barrel straight ti-tree, so thick we could not squeeze between it. We explored swamps filled with paperbarks and bulrushes and through vast areas of wattle and scrub and areas thick with gum saplings

JACK LOOKS

BACK JACK JOHNSON which still grew thickly in many areas even right in central Dandenong. We roamed the moss and maidenhair fern covered areas and the native grasses and heath and where bracken fern grew nearly six feet tall. There were still many grasstrees throughout the areas, with their black trunks and green fronds and long straight flowers that looked like a kangaroo or wallaby tail. We picked the broad blue-green eucalyptus leaves and made whistles, or crushed them be-

tween our hands and rubbed the fragrant oil on our faces. We chewed the clear amber gum which oozed from the branches and trunks of the wattles and picked the brightly-coloured fruit from the many kangaroo-apple bushes. We stared in amazement at the brilliant colours of the flocks of rosellas, mountain lowrys and grass parrots. But when we roamed out to Narre Warren North, Hallam and Harkaway through the grasslands and bush that would become Doveton, Eumemmerring and Endeavour Hills the extent of the bird varieties became even more numerous. If we weren’t at school we spent most of our time out in the bush or around the creeks. We got lost for hours in the thick bush until we reached a clear spot where we could see a familiar landmark like the power line towers which were still being worked on at that time, or the open

wooden water channel from the Lysterfield Reservoir, which was still in use and had not yet been piped, from which we drank. One of our biggest fears was that we would not reach our destination before it got dark, for in those days the darkness of the bush and timelessness of the land were total. We spent almost all our daylight hours outdoors and a lot of the night-time as well. We wandered our little market town of central Dandenong, and a favourite playground was the empty produce and stock markets. We chased each other through the calf and sheep pens and up and down the loading ramps on the roadway which ran from Clow to King streets alongside the high corrugated iron fence of the showgrounds. But if we jumped over the low fences of the sheep pens and landed on a sleeping drunk, we got out of there as fast as we could go.

Open Day

More cops call as crime soars Burglaries in Casey have climbed to nearly 50 a week with assaults about 40 and thefts 150, according to official crime statistics released on 29 September. The Police Association Victoria seized on the soaring crime rate in Casey to reinforce its call for a “significant injection” of frontline police. Opposition leader Matthew Guy called the statewide rise a crime “tsunami”. Crime in the municipality rose by 14.5 per cent on a per capita basis in the 12 months up to June 2016. In raw figures - which don’t take into account Casey’s population growth - burglaries are up 29 per cent to 2442 for the year, thefts are up 17 per cent and robberies up 46 per cent. Assaults in Casey were more than 2000 for the 12-month period, and thefts more than 7500. Superintendent Paul Hollowood, who oversees Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia police regions, said the robbery and theft spikes were predominantly stolen cars or stealing from cars. It was part of a “youth-networked offending phenomenon” that was striking all of metro Melbourne. “The Southern Metro Region Crime Team continues to focus upon youth networked offending, having made over 160 arrests since May of this year. “The rise in assaults (and related offences) is primarily as a result of an increase in the reporting of family violence incidents.” Supt Hollowood said he was confident a Frontline Tactical Unit targeting street crime and the Divisional Response Unit focused on serious, organised crime would reduce offending. Suburb by suburb, burglaries were up 39 per

cent in Berwick, 42 per cent in Cranbourne, 17 per cent in Doveton, 21 per cent in Endeavour Hills, 31 per cent in Hallam and 47 per cent in Narre Warren. The figures confirm a much publicised spate of aggravated burglaries and carjackings. Police Minister Lisa Neville said “hundreds” of additional police were being funded in response to a six-year trend of increasing crime. Ms Neville noted the trauma of carjackings and home invasions but argued they were relatively uncommon. “Across the state, carjackings have increased from 107 to 206 - these are very serious crimes but they represent only about 1 per cent of overall theft of motor vehicle offences,” Ms Neville said. “Burglary and break and enter offences have increased, but overwhelmingly these involve no confrontation with victims. “Home invasions remain about 1.4 per cent of overall crime - these are still horrific incidents which have a terrible impact on victims and communities.” Police deputy commissioner Andrew Crisp said drugs were a significant driver of crime. Ice was catching up to cannabis as the illicit drug most regularly found by police officers “out on the streets”, he said. Police Association secretary Bruce McKenzie said police were at “breaking point” and were without the numbers needed in stations to “get the job done properly”. “Our members have for months now been telling us that they are working excessive amounts of overtime and putting themselves at risk because there are not enough police in the Casey area,” he said.

Afreen, Vincent and Mandella at the rear. Front Lawrence, Maxine Foster and Claire 159401 A homework club at Gleneagles Secondary College to help its diverse student body has taken out an education award. The college won the Outstanding School category in the Centre for Multicultural Youth’s MY Education Awards on 8 September. The homework club is staged by teachers as well as tutors from Monash University’s Embrace Education program each Thursday. Founder of Clyde agribusiness Fresh Leaf Herbs Jan Vydra toned down his attire when he appeared at Wednesday’s Casey Cardinia business breakfast. Jan was a standout on the red carpet a fortnight previously at the Casey Cardinia Business Awards when he wore a bright green dinner jacket decorated with vibrant basil leaves. To the breakfast he wore a much more restrained tweed jacket with leather elbow patches. When business breakfast guest speaker renowned foodie Stephanie Alexander was asked her opinion on supplement shakes she didn’t hold back. “Those protein powders are appalling. It’s so ugly the idea of giving up real food, real

texture and flavour, to just be a machine that swallows powder.” There was no disputing who the expert on drug pill weights was during a recent Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing. A magistrate who thought an ecstasy pill might weigh three grams was swiftly corrected by the accused. The man in the dock who was charged with possessing more than 700 tablets told the court the pills actually weighed 0.3 grams. “Well there you go,” the judge said - with a wry smile - to the man’s lawyer. An accused facing a raft of theft charges made a valiant attempt to cover his tracks when questioned by police. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told the accused man’s fingerprints were linked to the theft of three pairs of glasses and sunglasses valued at $1000 from a parked car. He allegedly told police at the time that another person with the “same fingerprints as mine” must have been the offender. After pleading guilty in court, he was convicted, placed on an 80-hour community work order and ordered to reimburse the victim.

Geyer back on her bike for charity By Cam Lucadou-Wells Deborah Geyer is proof that no one ever forgets how to ride a bike. Ms Geyer, 53, of Doveton, recently got ‘back on the bike’ after several decades to raise money for the charitable Great Cycle Challenge in October. As part of the event, the spritely grandmother aims to ride 500 kilometres in a month to raise $1500 for children’s cancer research. She is inspired by the memory of relatives who have died from cancer, including her cousin Sean who succumbed to leukaemia at the age of seven. Ms Geyer, who was only several years older at the time, recalls visiting Sean in hospital for his birthday a month before he died. Since February, Ms Geyer has been in training for the event, cycling twice daily via trails to wildlife-rich Frog Hollow Reserve in Endeavour Hills. She needs to replicate those 20-kilometre daily

trips for much of October to reach her challenge goal. However Ms Geyer said she’s already achieved something significant - improved her fitness, wellbeing and losing six-kilograms. The type-two diabetic’s blood sugars have settled, and her arthritic toe and sore neck and back are unencumbered by this form of exercise. Her investment in a $600 bike has returned with interest. “When I started this ride, I found this big hill and stopped. Now I’m flying over it. “I’m in a lot less pain because I’m active.” Ms Geyer has had just one recent spill off the bike, bogging her wheels into a shifty sand trail at Frog Hollow. After the challenge, her plans are to explore further on Casey’s 200-plus kilometre bike path network. To donate, go to https://greatcyclechallenge. com.au/Riders/DeborahGeyer.

A warm welcome from

Flag protest is dividing council By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Jewel in crown A supporter of Doveton Library has been crowned as the suburb’s ‘living treasure’ at Celebrate Doveton on 23 September. The winner, Maria Harding, was nominated by members of Friends of Doveton Library. She received a bed-and-breakfast for two prize with a dinner voucher. Other winners were Lorenzo Ryan Aleke in the under-14 visual arts competition and his brother Tyreese who was runner-up in the under 14 story category. The event staged by Doveton Neighbourhood Learning Centre included henna and face painting, craft corner, gardening activities, historical photos, a Myuna Farm animal nursery, a Doveton Library event and a sausage sizzle. The event reflects the suburb’s diversity and inclusiveness, said organiser Christine Anderson. “Doveton’s positive qualities are often overlooked, and it only makes the news when negative things happen.“

Casey councillors have raised dissenting views to the council’s flag being flown at half-mast as part of its law-and-order campaign. The flag at Casey Civic Centre has been lowered since 8 September as part of a motion introduced by Mayor Sam Aziz and unanimously approved by sitting councillors. However, in a Star News election survey, councillors Susan Serey and Rafal Kaplon opposed the move, while Wayne Smith called it “drastic” and Garry Rowe labelled it an “unnecessary political stunt”. Cr Serey, of Edrington Ward, said community safety concerns could be expressed in other ways “rather than flying a half-mast flag which should be reserved for expressions of honour, grief or respect”. Four Oaks’ Cr Kaplon said political advocacy for more police resources - which was also part of the motion - could have been made without “resorting to such tactics”. “Attempts were made to suggest alternatives to the flag at half-mast but having (been) rejected, ensuring improved community safety was the priority.” The council won’t raise the flag until it gets its desired action from police and governments such

as more Casey-based police, tougher sentencing and a taskforce on violent street gangs. The Australian flag, which is governed by a set of protocols, continues to fly at full mast. In the survey, Cr Aziz described the move as a “symbolic gesture to demonstrate that our community is under threat from rising crime”. It was also supported by councillors Mick Morland, Rosalie Crestani and Damien Rosario. Geoff Ablett, Louise Berkelmans and Amanda Stapledon had not responded to the survey at the time of print. Candidate Garry Page, in Cr Aziz’s Springfield Ward, said the “use of the tradition for political games is shameful and a disgrace”. “Current Casey Councillors don’t seem to be capable of restraining Councillor Aziz.” On the other hand, former mayor and Four Oaks Ward candidate Shar Balmes said the council showed “support and sensitivity to the victims of crime” by lowering the flag. Another Four Oaks candidate Chris Sergeant said lowering the flag was a sign of surrender to offenders. “I’d rather stand, fight and win instead of lowering my community’s flag in recognition of those who would seek to harm it.”

Food glorious food was the overall theme of the latest Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast held at Cranbourne Racecourse on Wednesday 28 September. Australian culinary legend Stephanie Alexander espoused the virtues of real food and the importance of engaging young people in every step of the food process. Alexander was one of two speakers at the breakfast who spoke of the importance of engaging young people in the food and agriculture business. Business representatives from across the Casey and Cardinia regions were treated to a presentation by Jan Vydra, managing director of the Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs that won the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year title. Mr Vydra told of his experiences travelling overseas while researching different forms of agriculture and how his early childhood had formed the way he runs his business. “I remember Mum asked my teachers in kinder why I wasn’t learning anything, and the teachers told her to just let me play, that’s how I act and motivate my staff in agriculture,” he said. “We are trying to take strides in innovation and show farming can be a choice. While Mr Vydra was travelling overseas as part of the Nuffield 2016 Scholar Program, he discovered the average age of farmers in many places around the world is 60+ years. “Farmers are ageing, and it is a common problem,” he said. “We can solve some of these problems with technology, but we need to engage young people in agriculture.” Stephanie Alexander echoed Mr Vydra’s sentiments about engaging young people in food and spoke of the value she has seen in the kitchen garden project that has been adopted by schools across the nation. What started as a pilot program at Collingwood College in 2001, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation now helps 830 schools Australia wide.

Janine Miller and Colleen Hannequin from Colleen Hannequin and Associates. “The kitchen garden is more than just a way to fight against obesity,” Ms Alexander said during her presentation. “Rather than rally students to a cause, it convinces them to move away from junk food with a

fun and engaging program. “There is an important differentiation there, students work in teams, their confidence and self-esteem soars, and they gain a cultural understanding based on food.”

YOUR HEALTH YOUR IMAGE

Nodular melanoma on the shin of a woman in her early fifties.

Take care of your skin and health

Making community better Berwick Integrated Care (BIC) has been established by a team of well-respected surgeons, originally from Casey Surgical Group, who have worked in the region since 1980. “We know from years of experience in the area that there has been a real need for a central healthcare resource for patients where they can access multiple specialists in one place and at one time,” said Leigh Reeves, breast and general surgeon and joint director of BIC. “BIC can assist local GPs when specialist management is required and make life much easier for patients.” Patients can now be referred by their GP to the

multidisciplinary clinics offered by BIC. Upon their initial consulting session, patients will be assessed for their total health care requirements and can then make singular appointments which will enable them to access all of their required medical specialists in one place and at one time. BIC is located on Level Two of the St John of God Berwick Specialist Centre at 55 Kangan Drive, Berwick. At this location patients have access to breast, colorectal, upper GI, at risk foot and lumps and bumps clinics. Within these clinics is provision for care and treatment by a vast suite of medical specialists and

clinicians, including oncologists, surgeons, specialised physicians and allied health professionals in a variety of specialties. With medical and radiation treatment facilities, radiology and pathology on site, the new St John of God Berwick Hospital is due to open next door in late 2017 and with the impending expansion of Casey Hospital a patient’s complete treatment can be carried out in one precinct. A GP referral is required for patients to access the clinics. For further information call practice manager Maree Read on 9769 7227 or email csg@caseysurgical.com.au.

What is a nodular melanoma? This is a type of melanoma that appears as a nodule or lump on the skin surface. Some 15 per cent of all melanomas are of the nodular variety. It is very important to diagnose them early as they are the most rapidly growing of the melanoma types, and can become dangerously thick within a matter of weeks. They are often non pigmented and present as pink or bleeding lumps on the skin which can make them more difficult to diagnose. To try to avoid missing a nodular melanoma it is useful to apply the EFG rule. Any skin lesion that is elevated, firm and growing should be promptly removed and sent for biopsy to exclude a nodular melanoma. The Sun Patrol Skin Cancer Clinic is at 48 Van Der Haar Avenue, Berwick. For more information, visit www.sunpatrolscc. com.au or call 9769 3358.

DISPLAY VILLAGE OPENS WITH A BANG \ DISPLAY VILLAGE SALES OFFICE LOCATED AT 9 MURPHY STREET, CLYDE NORTH

The time has come for one of Clyde’s biggest developments to officially celebrate the opening of its huge on-site display village. The display village is just off the Berwick-Cranbourne Road, and is located within the Clydevale Estate, a project run and developed by Abiwood. To mark this milestone occasion in the estate’s history, Clydevale will be hosting a grand opening event at the new display village on Saturday15 October. With over 40 display homes to open

on-site from some of Australia’s awardwinning builders the display village is expected to attract potential homebuyers from all around Victoria. The homes on display are some of the most contemporary and innovative in the market, making this display village a modern home design destination. You will find all of the major builders down at the village along with many smaller boutique builders exhibiting unique home designs. There is also a mix of single and double-storey homes to explore that will inspire your own ideas

for your dream home. The managing director of Abiwood, Mark Drysdale, has been eagerly looking forward to the grand opening and what the display village will bring to the estate for years to come. “Clydevale positions itself as the gateway to Clyde - setting a high quality benchmark for the area. We invite you to picture yourself in this community and to see the lifestyle and investment benefits that will flow as Clydevale grows and matures. Come and enjoy your ’new life’

at Clydevale.“ The free event will be an afternoon of family fun with many activities for both kids and parents to enjoy including pony rides, a petting zoo, jumping castle, face painting, a coffee van and much more. There will also be a barbecue fundraiser run by the Clyde CFA to keep everyone fuelled throughout the day. Display village sales office is located at 9 Murphy Street, Clyde North. NEW HOMES & LAND

PERFECT FOR SMALLER BLOCKS Every child needs a backyard to play in; however it is extremely difficult to combine the cost of a big block of land, and a big house at an affordable price. The Colchester 300E by RMS Homes is the perfect solution as this clever design combines four bedrooms, study nook, two separate living areas, a huge alfresco area complete with outdoor kitchen, patio blinds and barbecue ideal for outside living, and all capable of fitting on a 12.5m wide x 30m long block of land, leaving plenty of space for the kids to play. As with all RMS designs, it features the incredible “TurnKey Essential“ inclusions such as stone benchtops to kitchen, ensuite and bathroom; ducted heating, air conditioning, carpets and fully tiled living areas, fully fitted out wardrobes, window furnishings, 900mm stainless steel appliances and dishwasher. But that’s not all - the inclusions don’t stop inside, with fencing, landscaping, fully concreted driveway and path, clothesline and letterbox all completing the ultimate turnkey package. Take a look at RMS Homes’ huge range of home designs by going to their website. They have many options available with plans starting from a tiny 8 squares up to a whopping 60 squares and everything in between. RMS Homes is the only builder that includes everything in their entire home design range so you can literally put your key in the door, move in your furniture and start living straight away without the burden of completing items yourself. The great thing about RMS Homes is they

don’t have ‘starting prices’ - they have ‘finished prices’ so you know up front how much your selected new RMS home is going to cost before you hand over any of your hard earned money. Right now RMS Homes are offering their customers ’$500 full deposit’ on all of their designs with no more to pay until construction starts, a real money saver for those customers with their own land already. Barry Erlenwein

Pravin Ramdany

Wayne Smith

Lynette Keleher

Damien Rosario

Reuben Humphries Robert Sacco

Aladin Rexhepi

Candidates make their pitch NIKOLAOUS PALATSIDES (preferences Balmes and five others) What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: None Place of Worship: None Campaign sponsors and donors: None Campaign cost/budget: Only some personal savings Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Encouraging businesses to employ more people by making Casey the best place to start and run a business; Improved roads; Better support for young families and those caring for a family member. Three ways to make council budget savings: Review council services; Sell things we don’t need; Stop the government cost shifting to council. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Putting the Casey corporate flag at half mast, leaving our national and state flags untouched, is a message to the State Government that costs our ratepayers nothing. I have no doubt those loyal to the State Government will feign offence at this message, but the reader should have no doubt my loyalty is with our residents. Law-and-order solutions: I will do whatever it takes to take back our neighbourhoods as a safe place to raise a family, but I’ll send the bill to Spring Street, not to the ratepayer. CHRIS SARGEANT What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: N/A Place of Worship: Home Campaign sponsors and donors: Jennifer and Frank Drake $30, Jamie and Sonny Farrugia $50 Campaign cost/budget: Under $500 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: An Inaugural Candidate Nomination Group. Those who have missed out still have a vital and important role to play in reflecting the communities wishes to council and provide a level of accountability to elected councillors; Develop council community partnerships (CCP) with sporting groups, clubs and individuals. These CCP will provide resources such as materials, expertise and dollar for dollar donations to assist their own team members develop community facilities and programs; Concrete Skate park for Endeavour Hills. Three ways to make council budget savings: Sanity checks on capital expenditure purchases and contracts especially in building maintenance. Reduce the current building maintenance rate of $20 out of every $100 received; Sanity checks on capital works programs - recently my street was resealed - none of us could figure out why?; Participate in Audit and Ethics committee. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Lowering the flag indicates to the offenders that we have surrendered I’d rather stand, fight and win instead of lowering my community’s flag in recognition of those who would seek to harm it. Law-and-order solutions: Reinvigorate Neighbourhood Watch; Continue to lobby the State Government to increase local police numbers; Additional funding and resources to help those with difficulty controlling their emotions or substances. By taking ownership of this problem we will then free up the police. BILL KLEMMER What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Political party membership: Independent Place of Worship: My interests include the bush, the coast and sailing, and I see the grand designer in these areas all the time. Campaign sponsors and donors: None Campaign cost/budget: Approximately $250 nomination fee Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Make housing provision a priority; Integrated public and road transport initiatives; A high-quality plan for Doveton’s re-development. Three ways to make council budget savings: Longterm budgeting system; Review “make work to spend money” projects; Maintain an outdoor workforce as a realistic means of assessing contractors’ costs and tenders. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Not as important as below. Law-and-order solutions: Council to lobby for police stations open 24 hours. Intensive rehabilitation pro-

grams in jail for super low rates of re-offending. BARRY ERLENWEIN What ward/municipality do you live in: Boundary of Four Oaks and Edrington wards Political party membership: Independent Place of Worship: None Campaign sponsors and donors: None Campaign cost/budget: None Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Lobby for more Police numbers. Looking into Area overlays to prohibit buildings that or ratepayers/residents don’t want. Rates at 2.5% state government cap. Three ways to make council budget savings: Cancel projects that ratepayers/residents don’t want or we can’t afford. Cut back council grants and handouts. Look into expenditure and cut back unnecessary expenses that cannot be linked to profit or the well being of ratepayers/residents Your view on half-mast Casey flag: A political stunt for more publicity prior to a council election. Being ex military I don’t believe it should have been done - unAustralian. Law-and-order solutions: More police numbers and heavier penalties. This needs to be addressed by state government but as a large council and with cooperation from our neighbouring councils like Cardinia we could do it. RIVER GUM WARD Likewise this week, voters in Doveton, Eumemmerring, Hallam, Hampton Park and Lynbrook will be receiving ballot papers for the 2016 Casey Council elections. Just seven of the 15 candidates for the River Gum Ward responded to Star News’s survey, most within a 24-hour deadline. Some contenders have also proposed quite a few original projects and rates-saving measures. Below is a heavily edited version of statements. For each candidates’ full statements, go to the Starcommunity.com.au website. Survey respondents: Pravin Ramdany, Wayne Smith, Lynette Keleher, Damien Rosario, Reuben Humphries, Robert Sacco, Aladin Rexhepi (7.5 hours late) No reply: Gamini Fonseka, Elizabeth-Rose Skaliaris, Anne-Maree Wise, Ian Spencer, John Gulzari, Malik Atif Mahmood, Nagaraj Nayak, Robert Flanigan PRAVIN RAMDANY What ward/municipality do you live in: River Gum Political party membership: None Place of Worship: Faith Christian Church Campaign sponsors and donors: None Campaign cost/budget: $$$$ Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Infrastructure to support our growing city; Increasing business and employment opportunities; Youth outreach programs to prevent youth crime and violence; Strong voice for integrity and transparency. Three ways to make council budget savings: Delivering quality services in new and innovative ways; Draw inspiration from best practice in the private and public sector in terms of efficiency and productivity; 50 per cent of its expenses come from procurement and materials. Council should look at saving in this area. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: I support Mayor Sam Aziz in this matter. Law-and-order solutions: More police for City of Casey. WAYNE SMITH What ward/municipality do you live in: River Gum Political party membership: ALP - but not an endorsed ALP candidate Place of Worship: N/A but a supporter of the right of ALL faiths Campaign sponsors and donors: Public fund-raising event (plus my personal contribution) Campaign cost/budget: $5000-6000 approximately Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Completion of ‘Bunjil Place’ and ensure that it becomes the most visited/used facility in Casey; Community safety; Responsible budgets to keep up with the growth of our city. Three ways to make council budget savings: Ensure

that state and federal govenments cease pushing services/programs back on to Council; Seeking a fair share of outside funding to support much-needed infrastructure; Live within ’rate-cap’ levels. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: A drastic way to bring to attention the distress/fear in our city. Law-and-order solutions: Lobby for more police numbers and police presence throughout Casey; Support for ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ and similar community programs; Youth programs/services. LYNETTE KELEHER What ward/municipality do you live in: River Gum Political party membership: None Place of Worship: N/A Campaign sponsors and donors: Friends and family. Fund-raised at my birthday party in place of gifts. Small amount in my Gofundme account. Campaign cost/budget: Approximately $1820 that I fund-raised. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Upgrade netball courts and new clubrooms at Hampton Park Football Netball Club and more support for River Gum sporting clubs especially juniors; Completion of the Hallam Road duplication up to Princes Highway; Making Casey a solar city to generate an income to offset rates. Three ways to make council budget savings: Change the CEO to get an injection of new skills and financial expertise; Greater scrutiny to cut wastage in the Operational Budget such as unnecessary overseas trips for council officers; Stop wasting money on infrastructure projects that are not justified or in some cases not even asked for. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: Inappropriate. Law-and-order solutions: More funding for police and effective intervention and transition programs; Council liaising more with schools and teaching civics in schools; More healthy alternatives for youth and local job creation; More support programs. DAMIEN ROSARIO What ward/municipality do you live in: River Gum Political party membership: Place of Worship: St Kevin’s Church, Hampton Park Campaign sponsors and donors: Unknown Campaign cost/budget: Self-funded Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Completion of the Hampton Park Central Structure Plan for the shopping and community districts in Hampton Park (a huge undertaking that has not progressed in 15 years but is finally moving); Myuna Farm Master Plan and implementation (Doveton); Upgrading our sporting reserves with extra playing courts and much needed resources. Three ways to make council budget savings: Initiate a yearly review of council services, assets and expenditure; Dispose of excess and unnecessary assets that are no longer required (e.g. small parcels of land that serve no use or large assets that do not meet council’s policies); Ensure a more competitive tendering process Your view on half-mast Casey flag: A symbolic gesture to register our residents’ sincere desperation in looking to be heard by the State Government, as Victoria’s largest council, on our concerns of crime and community safety, as well as to register our disappointment in the cuts to Police hours and numbers in our municipality. Law-and-order solutions: Education and consistent messaging (signage, warnings); Continue in our partnership with Victoria Police and Council to ensure that we are addressing crime and community safety as a united front; Enforcement action and following through to ensure that trouble makers know that our council will not tolerate anti-social behaviour. REUBEN HUMPHRIES What ward/municipality do you live in: Four Oaks Ward Political party membership: Not endorsed as a candidate by any political party. Place of Worship: None Campaign sponsors and donors: None Campaign cost/budget: Not much, only what I have saved up. Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Improved

public transport options; Increase jobs in Casey; Better support residents who care for someone with special needs. Three ways to make council budget savings: Stop the government cost shifting to council; Review council services; Sell things we don’t need. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: It’s very clear that the State Government needs to act on their responsibilities to adequately fight crime in Casey, and lowering the corporate flag of the City of Casey is one effective message, at zero cost to the ratepayer, telling the State Government to act. Law-and-order solutions: The State Government is failing Casey residents, so if I am elected I will implement community initiated crime prevention programs that have worked elsewhere and that have been tailored to our needs. However, this is only shifting the burden onto local residents, so I will also fight the State Government’s inaction and demand that it fulfills its promises to the people. ROBERT SACCO What ward/municipality do you live in: River Gum Political party membership: Independent Place of Worship: Church Campaign sponsors and donors: Self funded Campaign cost/budget: $3000 Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Widening of Pound/Shrives Road; Upgrade of Robert Booth Reserve; Improvement of Hampton Park Shopping Centre surrounds. Three ways to make council budget savings: Human resources review; Program evaluations to eliminate any duplication of services; Review of councillor entitlements. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: It’s a passive protest from Council for action by the State Government for additional police resources. While offering visual reminders to all, it doesn’t go far enough. We need proactive measures to assist with our local policing, which given my security background, I am confident I could assist with. Law-and-order solutions: The community needs to engage with organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, to learn about some simple start measures such as locking car doors in driveways and locking doors when home. From police statistics, 40 per cent of the burglary, aggravated burglary and home invasions occur due to unlocked doors. Let’s focus on eliminating the 40per cent that we all have the power to, thereby giving police the ability and resources to focus on other crime. ALADIN REXHEPI What ward/municipality do you live in: City of Casey Political party membership: None Place of Worship: None Campaign sponsors and donors: Self-funded Campaign cost/budget: Minimum spend as possible Top three projects you’ll achieve on council: Streamline planning permits and implement adequate planning controls and processes; Support local businesses by cutting red tape and encouraging investment; Promote responsible building of properties in designated areas to ensure needs of the community are catered for. Three ways to make council budget savings: Ensuring budgets are practical, responsible and tailored for the urgent needs of the community; Scrutinise budget items to ensure no duplication, question status-quo and prioritise capital projects; Improve planning and forecasting processes to ensure we spend within our means and eliminate junkets. Your view on half-mast Casey flag: We should not be playing politics with our national symbol. There are better ways to highlight issues regarding the city to relevant authorities. Law-and-order solutions: Demand and fight for 24-hours manned police stations; Promote Neighbourhood Watch programs, install CCTV cameras in public areas and push for more police presence; Promote safety and lobby for tougher rulings on offenders. 27 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 3 October, 2016

Library’s life over the decades By Victoria Stone-Meadows The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation is celebrating its 20th year of operation this year, but some of its employees have a history with the library that predates its incorporation. The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation was gazetted on 26 September 1996 and the first day of operation was 1 October that same year. Many of the staff members have stayed on during the different incarnations of the region’s libraries and they shared some wisdom and stories to celebrate the library’s birthday. Vasu has been employed by the library in one form or another for 40 years and said she wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. “I really like my workmates, they have always been companionable to work with, and I like being with books and reading books,” she said. “You can’t read all of them unfortunately.” Meredith started working at the library 25 years ago when it was located next to the old shire offices, and said the new building was a vast improvement over how it used to be. “Our air-con was overhead fans and open windows,” she said. “Cranbourne was just a county town then, and it was very much a small community library at the centre of the country town.” The library staff said there was a special way you became a real part of the community when you worked at the library. “I knew people from back then and still know the same people so had the continuity of the public and be part of their lives which I really enjoy,” she said. “You get very attached, and it’s a lovely part of our work is that we become an extension of people’s families.” With the development of new technologies, libraries have needed to adapt and learn to work with these new technologies. “When we first came to Cranbourne, we didn’t have the internet,” Pam said. “The first roll out of internet was to senior

Long-serving employees Pam Vickers, Patricia Cowan, Chris Scott and Robyn Rogers. 159688 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS managers and a select few emails, one foot after another now we can’t operate our daily lives without the internet.” “Every introduction of technology has been time saving for us,” Patricia said. “It’s improved the quality of service we can provide. When I started, we were still stamping dates in the front of the books and I would go

home covered in ink.” As technology develops and communities change, the staff at The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation believe that they and the books will be around for a long while yet. “Personally, I like to read a real book, it gives me more pleasure rather than looking at a small screen, I would be very sad if the print book went

away,” Vasu said. Pam said that libraries would continue to evolve and be part of the community. “Even the role of the library has changed and evolved into a space where people want to meet,” she said. “It has become more a space and community environment.”

SPORT DDCA’s comings and goings By Nick Creely The Dandenong District Cricket Association is set for another massive season, as all clubs start afresh and begin their quest to take out one of the hardest premierships to win in Victoria, Turf 1. All clubs are raring to go and have each got their own claim to this year’s title. If we thought last year’s signings were impressive, this year’s talent is going to make for some interesting reading. Here is a team by team preview of this year’s local clubs: BUCKLEY RIDGES Coach: Steven Mullaney Batting Coach: Susantha Pradeep Bowling Coach: Luke Fletcher Captain: Steven Mullaney Last Season: 6th Most Runs: Susantha Pradeep, 11 matches, 414 runs at 51.75 Most Wickets: Lukas Hoogenboom, 11 matches, 25 wickets at 13.44 INS: Steven Mullaney(overseas), Luke Fletcher (overseas), Dario Seale, Danny Bircumshaw, Rajitha Jayathunga Outs: Cal O’Hare (Tooradin), Kunal Kapoor (Overseas) First Match: vs Mordialloc, Ben Kavanagh Reserve Home Base: Pultney Street, Dandenong How far can they go? The inclusion of Nottinghamshire batsman Steven Mullaney as captain/coach and bowler Luke Fletcher are massive signings and could propel the club to push for a finals berth. Buckley Ridges has recruited well and will fancy their chances against the bigger clubs this season. Don’t be surprised if the club rises dramatically, such is the quality of their recruiting. Buckley Ridges are no strangers to finals action and will be desperate to atone for a disappointing 2015/16. DANDENONG WEST Coach: None appointed Batting Coach: Andrew Parker Bowling Coach: Paul Hadden/Jake Wekks Captain: Greg Siwes Last Season: 11th Most Runs: Sam Bracey, 11 matches, 341 runs at 31.00 Most Wickets: Shaun Weir, 10 matches, 28 wickets at 15.54 INS: None Outs: Sam Bracey, Clayton McCartney First Match: vs Hallam Kalora Park, Greaves Reserve 1 Home Base: Bennet Street, Dandenong How far can they go? Dandenong West will look to inject a number of youngsters into their top side this season and will look to advance the development of these players. Expect a similar placing this season but the importance of blooding youngsters cannot be understated, and will pay off for the club eventually. The club has unfortunately lost its leading run-scorer from last season which will put a dent in their batting lineup. HALLAM KALORA PARK Coach: Steven Gilmour Batting Coach: None Bowling Coach: None Captain: Steven Gilmour Last Season: 7th Most Runs: Jagveer Hayer, 10 matches, 241 runs at 26.78 Most Wickets: Jordan Hammond, 10 matches, 24 wickets at 11.75 INS: Steven Gilmour (Ringwood), Ciaron Connelly (Lyndale) Outs: Amila Perera (overseas) First Match: vs Dandenong West, Greaves Reserve 1 Home Base: Frawley Road, Hallam How far can they go? The inclusion of former Victorian pace bowler Steven Gilmour as captain/ coach is a massive signing for the club who are looking to propel up the ladder and make the finals this season. They have been able to retain their best players while adding to their depth, something the club made a big focus on. Youth will also be a priority in driving the club up the ladder as last year was disappointing by their own standards. Expect the Hallam boys to really step

NORTH DANDENONG Coach: Uzair Qureshi Batting Coach: Shane Lamour Bowling Coach: Jason Batty Captain: Jurgan Anderson Last Season: 10th Most Runs: Uzair Quereshi, 10 matches, 359 runs at 29.92 Most Wickets: Michael De Kauwe, 11 matches, 23 wickets at 21.65 INS: Jurgan Anderson (overseas), Shane Clark Outs: Martin Sultani (Narre Warren), Khyber

Kunary (Narre Warren) First Match: vs Parkfield, Lois Twohig Reserve 1 Home Base: Lois Twohig Reserve, North Dandenong How far can they go? The club will continue to develop their youth while trying to become more competitive and win more games this season. Unlikely to push for the top four, but with the inclusion of some handy overseas imports, it gives North some real star power and experience to add to an impressive band of young players. They have brought in an import in Jurgan Anderson to captain the club, something that should help them improve.

Dandenong West will look to inject some youth into their side this season. 149058

Cricket's a game for all nations By Nick Creely All Nations Social Cricket in Dandenong is making waves and providing a safe and friendly environment for individuals of all backgrounds to learn and play cricket. The program, which is catered to asylum seekers who have an interest in cricket, will run every Wednesday from 5 October, 5pm-6.30pm and is all year round. Refugees from countries such as Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Sudan have flocked to the program, with its inclusiveness and ability to bring different cultures together through their love of cricket having an impact in the community. The sessions will run as a Super Sevens Cricket tournament at the pop-up park next to Dandenong Train Station, and anyone is welcome to show up and get involved. All Nations first began in October 2014 at the Dandenong Showgrounds, and with the support of Cricket Victoria’s Multicultural offices and Cricket Victoria Regional Cricket Manager Adrian Jones, has been a successful way for refugees to engage with their local communities. The program has just recently announced that they will be playing in E Grade for Dandenong West Cricket Club in the DDCA this season, another step-forward in the rise of the program. All Nations are looking to further expand into other levels of competition, such is the breadth of talent and enthusiasm among the participants. They also run Sunday matches at various grounds in Casey and Greater Dandenong. Anyone who is interested in joining the program can contact Abdul Razzaq on 0430 783 526 or allnationscricketdandenong@gmail.com

By Nick Creely Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club (DWCC) is expanding to three senior teams in 2016/’17 and wants women, experienced or non-experienced, to join. It’s been well over five years since DWCC fielded a side in Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket Competition (VWCCC), with the Lions instead focusing on their senior teams in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. But the club has changed its focus and will now look to attract women who are new to the game or young girls coming through junior cricket. Club secretary Emma Gallagher believes the expansion into the VWCCC will convince wom-

en to give cricket a go. “It’s great to provide an option with less commitment and travel and we hope that this will means more women come and give cricket a go. “The WCCC team won’t play long weekends and will only travel as far as Clayton, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc and Frankston,” Gallagher said. The fixtures for the upcoming season have yet to be released, but games will be predominantly played on a mix of Saturdays and Sundays with training every Thursday and an optional Tuesday. “We have a great environment at the club where all new players are always welcome and we really try to create a safe, fun and friendly environment.

“We believe in Cricket Australia’s vision for cricket to be a sport for all Australians and want to ensure all girls and women have the opportunity to experience this great game. “We have plenty of players who come to us who have never picked up a ball before, but we also have a fantastic team of accredited coaches and players with experience right up to Australian level, so we have the support to build their skills,” Gallagher said. DWCC would like to welcome anyone interested in joining their cricket family make contact via their email dandenongwomenscc@gmail. com.au. For anyone not interested in playing, the club always welcomes volunteers and supporters.
