THE work of Healesville artist Paul Sonsie now adorns the walls of Karreenga Correctional Facility in Lara, following a week of work in August. Mr Sonsie, along with Josh Fradley and Sean Paris, completed three murals for the correctional facility, which opened last month and is set to be downgraded to low security in November. He said he hoped his work, which was inspired by street art and murals in a Norwegian prison, would “humanise” the space for inmates who were being rehabilitated before re-entering the community. THE CORONER will hand down a finding into the 2014 deaths of Launching Place residents Garry Theobold and Chloe Blackney early next year, following a two-day inquest last week. Coroner Paresa Spanos oversaw the inquest into the horrific crash that claimed the lives of Mr Theobold, 50, and Chloe, 11, on 15 February, 2014. The court convened for an inquest on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 September, and heard that at 8.50am on the day of the crash, Kinglake man Wayne Kortholt was driving his white Mack truck east on HealesvilleKinglake Road in Steels Creek, when he lost control on a bend. At the same time, Mr Theobold was driving his children, Lachlan and Hayley and their friend Chloe to Whittlesea’s Funfields for Hayley’s birthday and was travelling in the other direction. The truck, which carried no load and had a stone spreader attached, spun anticlockwise and the rear of the truck and the stone spreader came into the opposite lane, hitting Mr Theobold’s silver Toyota Prado four-wheel-drive. Both Mr Theobold and Chloe were treated by paramedics, but died at the scene from multiple injuries sustained in the crash. Addressing Chloe’s parents, Kylie and Simon, in the courtroom Coroner Spanos said the inquest was not to look at how the pair died in the crash, but to look into the circumstances and conditions that led to the crash. “We are focusing on how the collision occurred, in particular the contribution or the relative contribution of speed, and in particular the road surface which appears to have some imperfections,” she said. “I would like to say that these proceedings require me ... to ascertain, if possible, what happened, but also to focus again, if possible, on any lessons that can be learned so as to ensure that a similar collision doesn’t occur in future, or at least to minimise the possibility of that. “It is an inquisitorial process. That means we’re looking into something and hopefully we’ll have some answers for you by the end of the inquest, or at least by the time I come to a finding.”
Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) investigating officers, recontruction experts and VicRoads Sideways-force Coefficient Routine (SCRIM) experts, as well as VicRoads’ North Eastern Director at the time of the crash appeared as witnesses to discuss the condition of the road and the crash. Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) Detective Sergeant Dr Janelle Mehegan said numerous factors, including Mr Kortholt’s driving speed, the wet road, the un-laden truck and “split friction” on the road - where friction on the road differs greatly between the left and right wheel paths - all contributed to the truck losing control on the bend. It is estimated that the truck was travelling at about 53km/h around the bend, eight kilometres per hour faster than the 45km/h speed advised by signage. “I believe if the truck was travelling under the advisory (speed recommendation), it wouldn’t have mattered that the split friction was so significant in some places,” Det Sgt Dr Mehegan said. “I can’t say it wouldn’t have happened, but it would certainly be much less likely.” Former VicRoads Regional Manager Bryan Sherritt said the road was identified as being in “poor condition” after a fatality in 2012, about one kilometre from the 2014 crash site, and required resurfacing treatment. Though the road was not prioritised for resurfacing, extra warning signage was erected after the 2012 crash. VicRoads’ barrister Roslyn Kaye said at the end of the inquest that, though the road was in need of repair at the time of the crash, the interim measures, the speed limit and the advisory speed limit on the road were “appropriate”. Ms Kaye said it was VicRoads’ view that “driver speed could be seen as the operative cause” of the crash. The court heard police did not bring criminal charges against Mr Kortholt for the crash, because it was believed there would not be enough evidence to bring a conviction. Judge Spanos said she would make a finding on the matter in early 2017.

Jean's life of community OBITUARY
1000 1000
1000
LEAVING their new house in South Box Hill, and arriving at Yellingbo in March 1967 with their three children, Neville - as a farmer/electrical contractor, and Jean as a housewife - settled into the new community. Jean and Neville Sargeant quickly became involved in the community. Jean joined the Yellingbo Primary School Committee and served on that committee while all their children attended. She was nominated twice by the school for citizenship of the year to the Upper Yarra Shire for involvement on the committee for a long time, as well as dedication to teaching children to play tennis. Jean and Neville were both interested in playing tennis, so they became involved in the formation of the Yellingbo Tennis Club. This meant building new courts on land donated by the Parslow family. This was achieved with other members of the community who were interested in participating. Jean held various positions - from secretary, to president, treasurer, tennis coach, grounds person - for 45 years. Also, she carried out maintenance until she was forced to retire because of her illness 18 months ago, but still managed her duties as Secretary Treasurer. Jean received a life membership from the former Upper Yarra District Tennis Association for involvement in the committee and promoting the game of tennis. Jean was also involved with the Yellingbo Progress Association, as a committee member and part-time secretary to Neville who was the official secretary/treasurer. Jean was member of the Yellingbo Rural Fire Brigade and held office as secretary for a short period of time and assisting Neville in his duties for 47 years. Neville was involved with the Woori Yallock junior and senior football club. Jean followed suit, as their
Jean Sargeant led an active life within her beloved community. 160011 son played junior and senior football, with Jean helping out at junior games and then involved in running the senior canteen for eight years. In her spare time, she would help with counter meals and social club fund-raising, organising a special training night and dinner with Tom Hafey. She was presented with a life membership for her tireless work for the club. Jean was involved with daughters Mandy and Bronwyn in their netball games at Woori Yallock, and Pony Club at Seville, spending many hours of transportation to different venues. Jean was very interested in gardening and flowers, being a florist of course. In the early '90s, she became interested in growing lavender on the couple’s five-acre property at 40 Centre Road, Yellingbo. After harvesting the lavender, she would dry it in bunches and strip it to make dried lavender for the products she wanted to sell at the markets, which created great interest. She was often known as ‘lucyslavender’, or the ‘lavender lady’. In 1995, the Australian Lavender Growers’ Association was formed and Jean was a foundation member. She continued to be involved in this new industry, being ap-
pointed to the board as treasurer and handling their new venture in establishing Talga products trade-marked as the Sentimental Collection. In 2011, Jean was nominated as president and held this official position until the present time. She was rewarded with her tireless work over 20 years with the life membership presented to her at the 2015, 20-year conference at Ballarat - where it all started. She continued her hard work and interest in Talga, when she became sick until near the end. Jean was a partner with Neville in their electrical contracting and oil heating business, providing the necessary bookkeeping for him. As they owned a shop in the Gainsborough Building Main Street, Warburton, Jean would attend during school hours to be on-hand to answer any inquiries about the supply and installation of oil heaters, as they were on display in the shop. This venture at this building was not only to promote their business, but rebuild a section that was marked for demolition by the Health Department, which meant the whole building would be demolished and this would be a loss of an historical landmark in Warburton. As they sold the building in 1985, it was continually restored, with added improvements by the new owners and still stands as a landmark. Jean was well-known to many people in the Yarra Valley for her pleasant personality. She enjoyed a chat and was always willing to start up a conversation with anyone involved in her or their common interests. Jean had a passion for doing things and loved caring for her family. Her hobbies including cooking, sewing and needlework, gardening, flower arrangements, and writing in her diary each day. She was a devoted and loving mother to her children. She was a credit as a volunteer to the local and Australian community. Jean passed away on 17 August, 2016.

School children at the Marysville Bushfire Education Centre, which will be officially opened on 8 October. 159985

Focus on bushfire education By Jesse Graham A CENTRE to teach students about bushfires, including 2009’s Black Saturday fires, is set to open in Marysville on Saturday 8 October. The Bushfire Education Centre, established by Marysville photographer Barry Thomas, will open at 10am on the Saturday, and will be one of the public’s only chances to see the centre in its early stages. Mr Thomas said the centre would
be open to school groups and would undergo works in the future before being opened to the public regularly. He said the centre was established after school groups started coming to Marysville in 2011 to study the bushfires. “It’s just been a progression since then, so it’s been getting busier every year, and the Phoenix Museum is not big enough to hold the amount of school kids that were coming up,” Mr Thomas said.
When preparing the centre, Mr Thomas said he liaised with teachers and the Geography Teachers’ Association of Victoria to make sure materials fitted with school curricula. “It’ll develop to be quite large in time - but it’ll be something that’ll always be added to,” he said. “There’s different studies that children do - recovery, effect on people, it could be the fire itself, and the environment and how the environment’s changed.
“Plus, there’s lots of bushfire safety information - the idea is that kids can then take some of this information and pass it on to their parents.” He said the difference between the Phoenix Museum and the Bushfire Education Centre was that the former focused on Marysville in 2009, while the scope for the centre was wider, and gave children more hands-on learning opportunities. “They can handle stuff, which is really from input from the teachers - they

MP lights up lives By Jesse Graham CASEY MP Tony Smith last week announced more than $36,000 in funding to light up Coldstream’s Margaret Lewis Reserve and improve Warby’s footy games. On Monday, 26 September, Mr Smith announced $16,500 for new security lighting for Margaret Lewis Reserve. He said the lighting would improve safety for Coldstream Junior Football Club players, families and school teachers. “These lights will make a welcome addition to the sporting facilities here at Margaret Lewis Reserve and allow for people to feel safe and secure at night,” he said.
The money will be supplemented by $23,500 from Yarra Ranges Council. On Wednesday, 28 September, Mr Smith announced a $20,000 contribution, again in partnership with council, for an electronic scoreboard at the Warburton-Millgrove Football Netball Club grounds. Mr Smith said it was “fantastic” to see the funding come to the project, and said the new scoreboard would benefit players and spectators alike. Both of Mr Smith’s funding announcements came from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Grants program, which provides funding between $5000-$20,000 for small infrastructure projects for volunteer groups.
said kids need to be able to pick things up,” Mr Thomas said. The official opening will be held at 12.30pm at the centre, behind the Crossway Historic Country Inn, with entry from Lions Park. The Pans on Fire steel band will perform at the opening from 11am2pm, with a guided tour of nearby gardens at 2.30pm. For more information, visit www. liveandlearn.com.au.

A 23-YEAR-OLD man under the influence of alcohol rolled his unregistered white coupe on River Road, in Millgrove, on Thursday 29 October, according to police. Warburton police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson said the man was exceeding the speed limit when the incident occurred. There were two other occupants in the vehicle, and one sitting in the back seat was not wearing a seat belt, Sgt Wilkinson said. All occupants sustained minor injuries and sought their own medical treatment, and ambulance services were not called. Sgt Wilkinson said the driver had a blood alcohol reading of 0.123. The driver’s licence was suspended on the spot, and he was charged with exceeding the blood alcohol level, reckless conduct and other related charges. He was summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

A persistent headache to get attention Body
watch Jerome Higgins
Physiotherapist, Dandenong Ranges Physio, Olinda
HEADACHE is one of the most common illnesses in Australia, with around 15 per cent of us taking painkillers for a headache at any given time. Because headaches are so common, most people think they are a normal part of life. However, a persistent headache is a sign that something is wrong. The continual use of pain medication to combat headaches is akin to removing the warning light that alerts you to a problem in your car! Medication doesn’t solve your headache; it simply offers a short-term solution to dull the pain. Tension headaches and migraine are the most common forms of headache and cluster headaches are most rare. Other types of headache include sinus headache, rebound headache and exertion headache. Headaches can result due to a variety of reasons including stress, poor posture, accidents, medications, environmental factors such as strong odours and pollution and dietary irregularities. Perhaps one of the most overlooked causes of migraine and tension headache

is due to nerve irritation in the upper neck caused by poorly functioning spinal joints cervicogenic headaches. Since the nerves of the upper neck supply areas of the scalp and face, irritation to these nerves can and does often lead to headache. Cervicogenic headaches can easily be distinguished from other types of headache by a physiotherapist, and treatment to relief symptoms is usually extremely effective and fast. By carefully restoring proper movement to the spinal joints of the neck, your physiotherapist is able to significantly reduce the presence of nerve irritation and muscle tension helping to alleviate the cause of your headaches. Commonly, people with cervicogenic headache often have weakened postural muscles through their upper back and shoulder blade region, which is akin to weakened ‘core’ muscles in the lower abdomen in people with low back pain. Additionally, many headache sufferers will have increased tension through jaw and temporal muscles of the skull, which are easily assessed and treated. Your physio can then teach you exercises to improve the endurance and strength of your postural muscles, or stretches to relieve tight muscles, which will help to prevent headaches in the future. Sometimes this preventative stage can take much longer than the relief treatment itself, as your body needs to re-learn good postures and you in turn become more aware of how you are moving, sitting or standing.

DELWP for peace By Jesse Graham
Healesville Sanctuary's Michael Taylor with an Eastern tiger snake. 160025

Give snakes a ‘wide berth’ By Jesse Graham WITH the weather getting warmer throughout spring, DELWP is urging residents when wandering the valley to be wary of snakes coming out of winter hibernation. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) issued a statement on Monday 26 September, reminding residents that snakes would be coming out of hibernation during spring. Senior scientist at DELWP’s Arthur Rylah Institute (ARI) Nick Clemann said that though people would be likely to see snakes in outdoor areas, bites were rare. Healesville Sanctuary reptile keeper Michael Taylor said the majority of snake bites came from people “taking action” against snakes, and said anyone encountering a snake should give it a wide berth. “Initially, just stand nice and still,” he said. “If a snake appears to be agitated ...
in particular, flattening its neck, hissing at you, it’s best to stand completely still - movement is what frightens them. “Even if a snake’s sitting quite still and not moving out of your way, don’t push your luck and walk right up to them - give it a berth, walk around it, but you don’t have to run away in the other direction.” He said six of the seven snakes found around Melbourne - the Eastern brown snake, red bellied black snake, Eastern tiger snake, lowland copperhead, eastern small eyed snake and white lipped snake - could be found in places around the valley, but that bites could be avoided by being aware of their habitat. Habitat areas include areas with water, such as ponds or dams with long grass, though snakes can be attracted to piles of rocks, timber, metal and building supplies. “You should be thinking about activities you’re doing - with your hands, should I be wearing gloves for taking that wood away? Or gardening, pull-
ing weeds that have got out of control, clumps of long grass, there could be a snake in there,” he said. In the event of a snake bite, Mr Taylor said the key was to apply pressure to the wound and to stay immobilised if possible. “It’s all about pressure and immobilisation - a pressure bandage or something that can suffice for a bandage, and then sitting still, and then call triplezero on the mobile, and wait until help comes to you,” he said. Snake venom is absorbed through the lymphatic system, Mr Taylor said, and reducing movement and stress would slow the venom being absorbed. He said all snake bites should be taken seriously and that an ambulance should be called in every instance. On spotting a snake, call DELWP on 136 186 for advice or a licensed snake catcher. Snakes are also protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to hurt or kill them.
DELWP has extended an olive branch to Yarra Valley landowners, addressing the concerns of an advocacy group in a meeting in Woori Yallock last week. On Wednesday 28 September, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) staff met with nine members of the Yarra Waterways Group to discuss the Yellingbo Conservation Area. The reserve covers 51,000 hectares and encompasses waterways from Healesville and the Dandneong Ranges, stretching as far as Sassafras and Emerald. The Waterways group was established to express concerns of landowners who were affected by the change, such as those who would have their licences over Crown land ended. The Mail reported earlier this year that DELWP had advised some landowners that their licences over Crown land would end on 30 June, though this deadline was extended. Chairman Rick Houlihan said the meeting addressed many of the group’s concerns, particularly those about fire management and the acquisition of freehold land. “We’ve got a commitment from the department that there will be no compulsory acquisition of any freehold land in this process,” Mr Houlihan said. “A lot of people have been a bit worried that the department was go-
ing to say, ‘We want to get our corridor, we want some more land’.” He said communication would also be improved, and that people involved would receive personally addressed letters, rather than generic ones. “It’ll sort-of appease a lot of people’s worries,” Mr Houlihan said. DELWP Port Phillip Regional director Kelly Crosthwaite said that 45 licences due to be phased out were cancelled as of 30 September, but that DELWP would undertake “no compliance activity for the next sixth months”, as new arrangements are found. “At the meeting DELWP acknowledged that there needs to be a more practical approach to the implementation of the new area, and that DELWP needs to improve its communication with impacted landowners,” Ms Crosthwaite said. “It was acknowledged that improvements have been made already.” Ms Crosthwaite said that DELWP would be inviting community members to “lead the development of strategic plans” for the management of the area next year. “The plans will address bushfire risk, biodiversity value and water quality, weeds and pest animal management, and recreational use,” she said. She added that the waterways group would be helping to design and scope draft bushfire management recommendations, and would regularly consult them throughout the process.

Letters Dunny direction I AM concerned at the misinformation promulgated by the Chamber of Commerce in a mailout to Yarra Glen residents. It seeks the support of community members for a revamp of the pulic toilets using $100,000 of “left over money from the sale of the Health Centre land. In fact there is no such money available and this has been made abundantly clear to the Chamber. Everyone would welcome improved public toilet faiclities in Yarra Glen however it is reprehensible for the commercially orientated Chamber of Commerce to endeavor to ride roughshod over decisions made by a properly constituted community panel supported by Yarra Ranges Council. Ian Whitford, Steels Creek
Holiday from hell LAST year small businesses across the Valley were forced to endure the damaging impact of the decision by the Andrews Labor Government to declare two new public holidays. We all love our days off and Victorians work hard to earn theirs.
However, few people who I’ve spoken to believe that the same small businesses we rely on to provide the majority of jobs for our families and young people should have to pay such a heavy price for holidays we didn’t ask for. At a time when jobs are becoming even more difficult to find, and when many local businesses are already doing it tough, Daniel Andrews chose to impose two major new costs that will see many businesses in the Valley close their doors for the day. Employees will lose much-needed shifts and significant damage will be inflicted on our Valley’s and State’s economy. Last year the Andrews Government’s own assessment of its Grand Final Parade Public Holiday, carried out by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), found it would cost Victoria as much as $898 million per year. The PWC assessment confirmed that employment costs for the day were up by $286 million and that overall the costs of the holiday outweighed any benefit to the state. The assessment also confirmed that the additional holidays impacted on local councils and hospitals, with services being cut and ratepayers and taxpayers being left to foot the bill. I ask Daniel Andrews to listen to our small business owners and their employees in our Val-
ley and to reverse this job destroying decision. Please visit www.blabla.com.au for more information and to have your say. Christine Fyffe MP, Member for Evelyn
Face fire facts THE emotion shown by CFA volunteers (including myself) in response to the proposed Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) between the CFA and United Firefighters Union (UFU) is entirely understandable, given the EBA would fundamentally change the nature and effectiveness of a proud community safety organisation. The Country Fire Authority Act 1958 specifies that the CFA is a volunteer-based organisation. Over 97 per cent of CFA firefighters are volunteers who pursue trained, unpaid firefighting careers. The UFU (only established in 1990) represents the tiny minority of firefighters who follow firefighting as a paid career. In his letter, I am puzzled Geoff Champion (‘Champion of the UFU, ‘Mail’, 6 September) missed almost 50 clauses requiring UFU consent before CFA actions could be undertaken. UFU approval would be required to vary or do anything that “affects the work of career staff
(clause 45.1), including changes to clothing, equipment, technology or appliances (clause 90). Under clause 45.13, career firefighters would refuse to commence work until seven career staff were on scene, and (clause 36.4) paid firefighters would report only to other paid staff. Under clause 45.15, volunteers could not ride in the same vehicle as paid firefighters without career staff approval. These clauses treat volunteers as secondclass firefighters, regardless of their level of experience or local knowledge. The EBA is driven by the (Victorian) Premier’s (Daniel Andrews) desire to reward an ALP-affiliated union for actively supporting his election campaign. Former Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett was forced to resign and the CFA board was sacked for refusing to follow the dictatorial demands of the Premier. A union representing the private interests of three per cent of CFA firefighters should not be given a veto over any CFA decision. The UFU exists to further the pay and working conditions of its members, not to promote community safety or maximise the effectiveness of emergency services operations. Rob Pitcher, Gembrook
Pages from the past Healesville Guardian, 3 October 1936 In Case You Didn’t Know IT IS a true and regrettable fact that practically from its inception the Sir Colin Mackenzie Sanctuary has been more or less a centre of controversy. Why this should be is not wholly difficult to imagine in a small district where ambitions soar high and there is a definite inclination to sacrifice the progress of a valuable asset to other interests. The only alternative would be to develop the reservation as a State showplace and be taken over by the Government. Then the appointed committee of management would need to seek the co-operation of the Healesville council in an advisory capacity. Cr Mowle has suggested to ratepayers that when they contemplate instructing engineers and architects to carry out work for them to see that

Wheel way to help others By Derek Schlennstedt HEALESVILLE Interchurch Community Care Inc (HICCI) is seeking volunteer drivers to help with the Home and Community Care (HACC) transport service they offer. The HACC transport service seeks to help individuals who cannot drive and are unable to catch public transport. Volunteer drivers are able to provide assistance by transporting clients to health appointments, day centres and a range of social activities within the community.
Available to anyone with a full driver’s licence, the program offers locals a fantastic opportunity to help individuals who are unable to transport themselves to surrounding areas. All associated costs are paid for by HICCI and volunteers are provided with a company car and petrol reimbursement if they prefer to use to use their own vehicle. “All you have to do is come in, we pay any associated costs, provide any education you may need or want and there’s also social functions with other volunteer drivers that we hold,” says
Margaret Jones, Volunteer Transport Co-ordinator at Healesville Interchurch Community Care Inc. “Every volunteer is part of the HICCI team and there always made to feel part of the team,” she says. With flexibility to choose your own days, hours and times even drivers with limited time availability are able to take part. “It’s available to anyone, even if you’re limited with time – you don’t have to commit yourself to hours and hours every week, it’s something
you can do occasionally,” says Margaret. But she does add that to take clients they do need more volunteers. HACC transport service is available to anyone that resides in the areas of Healesville, Yarra Glen, and Coldstream. Margaret says that it’s a very fulfilling job and all her current volunteers love doing it. “Once they start they all love it,” she says. If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer simply call 5965 3529 or visit the HICCI office at 231 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.
Local man’s jail art By Jesse Graham THE work of a Healesville artist is adorning the walls of a new prison, after being selected to paint three large murals at the Karreenga Correctional Facility in August. Paul Sonsie, of Sonsie Studios, was selected to paint three large pieces at the correctional facility in August, ahead of its 16 September opening. He, Josh Fradley and Sean Paris completed the works, including a man in a striped prison uniform drawing a house, among other pieces, over about four months. Mr Sonsie said the pieces were inspired by works a street artist had painted inside a prison in Norway, and that he hoped the pieces would “humanise” the space for inmates. “All the prisoners in there, I’m never going to know their true story, or what they’re in there for – but they’re all human, and they’re just like you and me, really,’ he said. “To have artwork that sort-of humanises their environment ... it’s a positive thing, really.” He said it was difficult to come up with
concepts for the murals, knowing that the target audience would be viewing the works at all hours of the day. “If it was for any kind of public wall, it’s kind of free run; I can ... come up with with anything, really,” he said. “It’s such a controlled and touchy environment ... like any job, you get a brief, it can’t be too political and it can’t be something that would date too quick – it couldn’t have any sort of hardy, escape messages to it.” The prison opened as a medium-security facility, but will be downgraded to lowsecurity by November, with inmates taught cooking, cleaning, gardening and budgeting skills as part of their rehabilitation. As with one of Mr Sonsie’s other pieces, a large ibis painted on a wall in Healesville’s east end, he said he projected a stencil of the final work onto the walls, to make sure the piece came out perfectly. “It’s a similar thing, which is cool,” he said. “I reckon it’s the biggest project that I’ve done ... it’s the biggest, in scale, work that I’ve done – it’s probably the most interesting job that I’ve done and I’ve learned so much along the way.”

Attitudes to tinnitus count THE ringing noise people experience in their ears after going to a concert or listening to loud music can be described as tinnitus. In some cases, tinnitus is only temporary and goes away given time. Yet for others, the ringing noise is constant and interferes with their ability to concentrate or hear actual sound. The majority of us will experience tinnitus at some point. It is not usually the presence of the tinnitus that is an issue, but rather how an individual thinks and feels about it. When tinnitus becomes problematic, sufferers often associate it with feelings of fear and anxiety leading to stress and frustration. Tinnitus can be caused by several factors, such as age-related hearing loss, exposure to loud noise or earwax blockage. You are not alone. Even though you might feel like you are the only one with tinnitus, you are not. In fact, many celebrities have suffered from tinnitus, too.
How do I manage tinnitus? Australian Hearing clinicians are experienced at providing a structured rehabilitation program and treatment pathway for people who suffer from tinnitus. Other helpful tips: Avoid silence. Keeping your ears busy with background noise, such as the television or radio, can help your brain focus on those sounds, instead of the ringing noise. Keep calm and relaxed. Tinnitus can be triggered by stress and tiredness, so activities like a massage or yoga can offer relief. Check your medications. Some medications can cause or worsen tinnitus, so it’s essential to tell your family doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms. Take special care with medications for arthritis, anti-depressants, rheumatic diseases and some antibiotics. Limit your caffeine. Consuming caffeine can temporarily worsen tinnitus for some people. So, what next? The first step is to identify what is causing tinnitus and, if necessary, take a hearing test.

Connecting with mental health MENTAL health affects all of us. Almost half of all Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their life, with an estimated 20 per cent of the population experiencing a mental illness at any one time. This means that most of us will either experience or have a close family member/friend experience a mental illness at some point in our lives. To help people connect with their local health and mental health services, Neami National, in partnership with Yarra Ranges Council and a range of other health service providers, will be launching their first World Mental Health Day Expo (10 October) at the Mooroolbark Community Centre. People with mental illness can be isolated and disengaged from their local communities and the expo aims to raise awareness about mental health in the community and help to address some of the stigma and taboo around these issues. Over 20 local mental health and well-being organisations will have stalls at the expo. There will also be a range of activities, food and entertainment including: Speaker Jason Ball, LGBTIQ advocate and Beyond Blue Ambassador; Band Full Mental Jacket (a seven-piece band advocating for social inclusion) and the Rocky-Road Choir will play on the main stage; Free health checks and Tai Chi workshops will be available on the day. An art exhibition that will celebrate the role that artistic expression plays in many people’s mental health recovery journey. Come along from 11am to 2pm, 10 October, to the Mooroolbark Community Centre (125 Brice Street, Mooroolbark) to connect with the physical and mental health services in your local area.

What’s on the menu at Aurrum? FOOD Ambassador for Aurrum in Healesville, Karen Martini has developed some exciting new dishes for Aurrum’s aged-care residents. Ms Martini conducted a master class on Monday 26 September, with the head chef and kitchen team at Aurrum Healesville in Victoria. The team was trained on the preparation of the new menu items, which will be introduced at all Aurrum homes over the coming weeks. About 12 residents were then given the opportunity to sample some of the dieticianapproved dishes, including crispy potato rosti with horseradish, roast chicken noodle soup, roman semolina gnocchi, and apple and blackberry crumble. The dishes were well received by residents. Aurrum Chairman David Di Pilla said food is critical to residents’ satisfaction and enjoyment. “Meal times are often the highlight of the day for our residents - so it’s important that we offer interesting, tasty and wholesome meals,” Mr Di Pilla said. “The new selection of Karen Martini designed menu options combined with our broader menu will create a truly nutritious and gourmet food experience for our residents.” Aurrum aged care facilities have lush surroundings, and individualised care in a friendly and secure environment. Popping up By Jesse Graham AN OLD warehouse in Lilydale is being transformed into an art space for the month, with a hills artist hosting free theatre performances and an art exhibition. Cockatoo resident Gareth Hart has organised a Pop-Up Theatre space in Lilydale, repurposing an old warehouse space to host artists and performers throughout October. On Saturday, 1 October, the space hosted Dave Thomson, who presented a performance installation with light and sound, exploring power, loss and hate using projections, surround sound and lighting. On 8 October, Justine Walsh and Thomas Webster will present spoken word poetry and a saxophone performance, while on 15 October, Viv Rogis will perform a projection and dance installation. The next week, Melbourne Steam Theatre will present their own production of Alice in Wonderland and from 1-15 October, Amy Middleton will present a mixed media exhibition in the space. However, until residents sign up for tickets to the events, the warehouse location remains

Mr Hart, one of the organisers of hillsceneLIVE Festival, said the pop-up theatre was part of a new trend of “activating alternative unused space’ with art and installations, which came out of the Renew Newcastle festival in Newcastle, New South Wales. He said the event, which is supported by the Yarra Ranges Council, would also showcase the work of artists who live in the Yarra Ranges. “They’re not traditional - nobody’s doing a piece of Shakespeare,” Mr Hart said.

STORKS is a surprisingly excellent animated comedy with a unique premise. Cornerstone, a corporation run by storks, once delivered babies, but is now a conventional postal service. When an engineering mishap creates the first baby in almost two decades, ambitious stork Junior (Andy Samberg) and plucky orphan employee Tulip (Katie Crown)
resolve to deliver this baby to its parents. Sausage Party is a fun vulgar time, but Storks is a much more wholesome and purposeful animated movie. Stork’s characters are all complex and endearing, with satisfying personal journeys and many heartwarming moments. The film subtly tackles loaded themes of respect, responsibility and parenthood while remaining laugh-out-loud funny, and the plot moves at a
rapid-fire pace while still being smooth and coherent. I found Storks to be superior to The Lego Movie, Warner Animation Group’s previous feature film, as the humour is more sophisticated and the jokes land far more reliably. Storks also isn’t afraid to get a little dark, but always to a degree young children can handle. Storks is a much-maligned animated movie that is more than worth your time. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Cole-Blooded premiership win By Jesse Graham THE Western Bulldogs aren’t the only team celebrating the end of a long drought, with Healesville Football Club celebrating their first premiership in 26 years. The team won against Olinda Ferny Creek 8.6 (54) to 4.9 (33) on Saturday 24 September, in the Division 1 Seniors finals in Healesville. President of the Healesville Football Club Felix Fraraccio said he was “ecstatic” about the win, the club’s
first since 1988. “It’s been a long time,” he said. “Naturally, as the president of the footy club, I’m ecstatic.” The team had made it close in previous years, in one case missing out on a Grand Final by one kick in a preliminary final against Silvan, and had a strong run with its under-18s team. Mr Fraraccio credited coach Jack Cole for the result, paying tribute to his influence on the club and the players. “We’ve made the grand final two
years in a row, and him and his coaching staff in particular are a godsend,” he said. “Everyone will tell you, the finals is a different season altogether, and we just came to play - I think the boys were focused ... and we played Wandin twice, and they were really hard games, and I think that kept us in good standing for the grand finals.” He said the match was decided in the first quarter, where Healesville kicked four goals straight and Olinda’s
players missed “quite a few shots”. “They were focused, they really were - there was a steely resolve among them,” Mr Fraraccio said. Some of the team’s players, such as Luke Barclay and Daniel Plozza, had been part of the club for 12 years, and many had been former junior players for the club. “And that can be said for Olinda as well - I think 19 of their 22 were former junior players,” Mr Fraraccio said. “It’s special, because it’s a lot of lo-
cal product in there. “The game was played in great spirits.” He thanked the Yarra Ranges Council for its preparation of the grounds, the Healesville Greyhound Racing Club for its use of car parking to accommodate a 3500-strong crowd and club members who helped to organise and run the day. Tim Costigan received the AFL Victoria Country Best on Ground Medal for his efforts in the match.

By Jamie Strudley YARRA Ranges Athletics opens the 2016-’17 summer track and field season this weekend. Athletes will be spread over two venues throughout the day on Saturday with the Little Athletics competition starting in the morning as well as our senior athletes competing in the afternoon. Little athletics starts at 8.30am at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn. If you haven’t registered yet, go to lavic.com. au to join Yarra Ranges Athletics little athletics, or email lav@yarrarangesathletics.org.au. Seniors need to be registered with Athletics Victoria by midday on Wednesday to compete in the opening round of AV Shield. The first of 12 rounds will be held at the Nunawading track in Burwood East starting at 1pm. Email av@yarrarangesathletics for more information. For information on how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit the all new and improved website at yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page.
Our pennant season kicking off at home THE 2016-'17 mid-week Pennant competition started on Tuesday 27 September with Yarra Junction 1 at home to Chirnside Park 4. Chirnside Park got off to a flying start and Yarra Junction just never caught up. Chirnside Park won the match 72 to 51. On Saturday 1 October, Yarra Junction played Cockatoo in a practice match for both sides before the Saturday Pennant season starts on 8 October.
The summer track and field season is about to start. 160063
Warburton stableford starter WEDNESDAY, 28 September: Stableford. Winner: R. Hottes (40 points). Runner-up, with his best score for a long time, was Max Carvill, accumulating 38 points. The balls went down to 33. The nearest the pins went to Phil Garside (3rd), Allan Hubbard (15th) and Tony-Bickley ( for junior golf) on the 17th.
The Tuesday Pennant Competition commenced last week with a close loss to Donvale at home. This week they play Croydon 1 away. The Saturday Pennant starts with Warburton 1 playing Mooroolbark 1 away, Warburton 2 playing Heathmont 4 at home and Warburton 3 playing Box Hill 3 away. The popular Wednesday night Triples Barefoot Competition will commence on Wednesday 2 November. They still require one more team. Contact the co-ordinator, Shaun Lee- Tet 0488 565 953 for further details, if you are interested. Go Burras!
Saturday 1 October: Stroke and Monthly Medal: On a medal-day when the football grand final caused the field to be much smaller than usual, Danny Fox grabbed the opportunity to win another medal with a nett 73. Shane Campbell was the runnerup with a nett 74. The best gross score on the day came from Noel-Cross with 82 ‘off
the stick’ (this shows how hard good scoring is on the course during this very wet spring). The rundown of balls went to 76. Plus, the nearest the pin winners were Noel Cross (3rd), ‘Butch’ Hollis (9th) and to Jason Kennedy, who snared two of them, on both the 12th and 15th.

The Heritage Family
They started at 10am, so that the match could finish before the start of the AFL Grand Final. It was wet and cool, with showers falling throughout the match, which made the green very heavy and slow to play on. The rain didn’t dampen the players’ enthusiasm, though and there was plenty of fun and friendly banter. Cockatoo were fabulous hosts and although Yarra Junction won; they still treated the guests to a sausage sizzle at the end of the match.

Motoring Some classic heavy metal By Peter Douglas IN CONJUNCTION with Motorclassica, the ‘Mail’ is giving five lucky readers the chance to win one double-pass to the anticipated event. For your chance to win, simply email win@mailnewsgroup.com.au. Please include your name, address and phone number, as well as why you would like to go and see this classic event. Australia’s premier automotive extravaganza for rare and exotic, historic, vintage, veteran, classic and collectable cars and motorcycles is set for an exciting seventh year. Motorclassica, to be staged once again at Melbourne’s magnificent 19th century Royal Exhibition Building over the 21-23 October weekend, is a celebration of enthusiasm for all things automotive and the automotive lifestyle. Hundreds of exquisite cars and motorcycles will be displayed throughout the historic halls of Australia’s original parliament house, with an additional 200 or more vehicles on show each day in the ‘Club Sandwich’ car club displays alongside the main hall supported by Lorbek Luxury Cars. Celebrations will kick off on the Thursday evening of Motorclassica, with the opening night party, at which Mercedes-Benz will launch its newest luxury car model.
This year marks 130 years of Mercedes-Benz, a milestone that will be recognised with a curated display of more than 15 exceptionally rare and collectible vehicles. Mercedes-Benz will showcase a wide variety of models, from the the 1896 Benz Velocipede, the world’s first production car, through the prewar models, to the 300SLs of the 1950s and the highly desirable Ponton and Pagoda models of the modern era. Key to the display will be George Hetrel’s stunning 540K, said to be Australia’s first “million dollar car” when imported into Melbourne in the 1980s, and now worth so much more than that. BMW also celebrates a milestone at Motorclassica this year, reaching its centenary in 2016. To mark this occasion, joining the concours line-up will be a range of BMWs ranging from the beautiful art deco-inspired 326, 327 and 328, through to several rare models from the ’80s and ’90s including Jim Richards’ famous ATC-winning JPS-sponsored cars from 1985 and 1987. In addition, the centenary display will showcase Gerhard Berger’s 1986 Mexican F1 Grand Prix-winning Benetton Formula B186 and the monstrous M1 ProCar. Motorclassica 2016 will see displays honouring Rolls-Royce, Ducati, Carrozeria Touring Superleggera and 50 years of Mini Cooper’s domina-

The renowned Motorclassica event is now into its seventh year. 159940 tion of Mount Panorama in the 1966 Bathurst 500 – the Gallaher 500 at the time. Of course, it wouldn’t be Motorclassica without the annual Australian International Concours d’Elegance,
and the 2016 event is no exception. The Australian International Concour d’Elegance recognises the best of the best in a number of event categories with a trophy that’s a highly sought-after prize in the collector
car and motorcycle world. Motorclassica 2016 will kick off, as usual, with another unique aspect of this automotive extravaganza: Tour Classica. Tour Classica will see select Motorclassica exhibits drive in convoy through the streets of Melbourne’s CBD on Thursday morning (20 October) prior to taking up residence at the Royal Exhibition Building, a spectacular and unique start to this amazing event. Also on the Motorclassica program will be the annual Collector Car and Memorabilia Auction, conducted by Theodore Bruce, which is expected to feature over 100 lots of automotive ephemera and around 30 classic cars and motorcycles. The auction has already consigned a number very special, hand-picked collector cars and motorcycles, including a one-owner, 1935 Lagonda M45 Rapide – once the car of choice for World Land Speed record holder, Sir Malcolm Campbell. Don’t miss out witnessing all of the historic, rare, classic and collectible cars and motorcycles in the premier automotive event for 2016, and all that Motorclassica 2016 has to offer.
