IT’S GREAT IN GREATER DANDENONG
Birthday party marks 150 years
Market trader Melina s Bakery and Larder created a cake for anniversary celebrations. 159054 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Dandenong Market first opened its doors 150 years ago on 10 October in 1866. The Journal thought it only fitting to mark the milestone in its Monday 10 October edition, ahead of jubilee celebrations on Sunday 16 October. Organisers expect 25,000 people at the 150th birthday party which will run from 10am to 4pm and feature food, music, dance, rides and free activities for all ages. Visitors will get a glimpse of the market’s roots through an interactive late 19th-century market scene, complete with colonial-era costumes and props which are perfect for photos. The market partnered with Multicultural Arts Victoria to provide musical entertainment. Acts will include Bindaas Bollywood Dance, fusion ensemble Trident combining North Indian classical music with Western music, and Sol Nation performing a melting pot of reggae, samba, funk, salsa, East Timorese folksong and African dance music. An extra 15 food vendors and food trucks will
join the 200-strong market stall line-up for the jubilee, including Melbourne Paella Company, The Curry Truck, Senor BBQ, Ok-Nomi and the Traditional Lemonade Stand. A teacup ride, chair-o-plane and laughing clowns will bring a fairground vibe and there’ll be ta moko face painting, henna body art, kids’ face painting, an animal farm and more. Dandenong Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs said the market was at the epicentre of Greater Dandenong. “It’s the cultural heartbeat of the region,” she said. “Since the market’s inception in 1866, we have grown from a tiny town of 48 to a buzzing cultural hub of close to 150,000 people.” Today the market welcomes five million people through its doors each year. “The 150th jubilee is not only a significant moment in the history of Melbourne markets, it is also a celebration of the vibrant community that has contributed to the Dandenong Market’s success today,” Ms Hibbs said.

IT’S GREAT IN GREATER DANDENONG
Family and fruit a ripe cocktail By Casey Neill Danny Luppino has been a Dandenong Market fixture for 54 years. And the Italian-born 74-year-old wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love the shop, I love the customers, the market, the council...,” he said. “They’re like family here.” Danny followed his brother to Australia. “My eyes were opening because I was a truck driver in Italy,” he said. “I saw this beautiful country... “I started to work with my brother at South Melbourne Market.” It was open Wednesdays and Fridays. “I looked for another day of work. Dandenong was open on Tuesday,” he said. Soon he was operating a stall on one side of Dandenong Market and his brother covered the other side. “Since then – 1962 – I’ve kept going,” Danny said. “Once they opened Friday here I left South Melbourne and I concentrated here. “Then they opened Saturday here and I left Richmond – I was at Richmond Market on Saturday morning – and I concentrated just on Dandenong. “The last 35 years I’ve been here just in Dandenong.” The market introduced Sunday trading two years ago. “It’s getting better and better. Sunday is becoming one of the best days,” he said. Danny boasts that everyone at the market knows him. “The customers come in and come straight to my shop. I do my best to make the customers happy,” he said. “When we started there was no self-service. We would serve the customer. “The customer wasn’t allowed to touch anything.
love the shop, I love “theI customers, the market, the council... ”
- Danny Lupino
“Thirty years ago that changed. “When we started, if the stuff was a little bit damaged you had the chance to sell it. “The new generation, if it’s no good they say ‘eat it yourself ’. “They want to pay less but it’s got to be good.” But one thing hasn’t changed. “You get a good name and the customers come back,” he said. Danny prides himself on providing fresh produce that will last at least a week in the fruit bowl. “When you buy, you buy number one,” he said. “You go for quality, you pay a bit more and you get it back and the customer’s happy.” His brother passed away 10 years ago, but another Luppino is still by Danny’s side. “My son Domenic wants to take over the business,” he said. “He loves this job. “He started here when he was about seven years old. “He was coming with me Saturdays and school holidays. “He loved it and he’s still here.” Domenic is now 44 and, Danny claims, is “taking over now”. “He’s the boss!” Domenic laughed off the claim. “He still calls the shots, don’t you worry about that,” he said. He said the 1am starts did wear him down but he loved “the special people in Dandenong, the variety of different people, really”. “I enjoy serving the customers. It’s all I know,” he said.

IT’S GREAT IN GREATER DANDENONG
Book captures moments in time By Casey Neill A statue unveiling will bring three months of Dandenong Market birthday celebrations to a close. The bronze sculpture by artist Anne Ross will reflect life in the market and will be revealed on Friday 4 November. The market kicked off festivities on 13 September with the launch of the Dandenong Market: Celebrating 150 Years book and the official opening of Rosling Lane, a 20-metre historical mural. The book and the wall - named after early market auctioneer Thomas Rosling - document significant moments in the market’s history using photographs and records. Author Michael Schmith had just six weeks to prepare the 128-page hardcover book to capture the market’s evolution through original photographs and historical records. “The best thing was to come to the market and talk to the people who matter the most, and the people who matter the most in the market are the traders and the customers,” he said. “You see how it works and you see this whole spirit of community which, like its produce, is fresh daily. “It depends on people. It’s not a supermarket. It’s not a shopping mall. “It’s got give and take and a community spirit that’s unquenchable.” Retiring Greater Dandenong councillor and plumber John Kelly was among many people who shared their thoughts on the market with Mr Schmith. He recalled living on Stud Road on the stock route to market. “On Tuesdays my mum would ask me to shut the gate,” he said. “She had great pride in her garden and when she forgot to close that gate the front yard would

But Dandenong Market would always be there, he said. “You must preserve the atmosphere, with everything from bananas and socks for sale. It’s perfect,” he said. The Dandenong Market: Celebrating 150 Years book is available from the Dandenong Market management office for $30.

IT’S GREAT IN GREATER DANDENONG
Family ties are a stock in trade By Casey Neill Mother and son Bella and Adrian Janai have spent a combined 60 years working at Dandenong Market. Bella’s Bargains has been a fixture for the past 35 years, originally as a children’s wear retailer and now stocking clothing for the whole family. “Gather ’round and have a look at our track pants...” Bella shouted during her interview with the Journal. She explained that her brother introduced her to the market through his leathergoods store. “I was here when they had the livestock outside,” Bella said. “I used to enjoy going out and having a look at the sheep. She helped him out for about five years before making her own mark. “I enjoy talking to people and I enjoy being with people,” Bella said. “I’ve seen children growing up. Some are teachers, at uni, being doctors... “They come in and give me a kiss. “It’s nice. “I get flowers from parents sometimes.” Adrian finished VCE and studied accounting for two years before choosing market life. “Someone had to keep an eye on them!” he said. “You meet people along the way. You have regular customers. “We try to provide clothing for the community at a price they can afford.” Adrian has seen the market grow and evolve over the years. Its shoppers had also changed, he said. He said many new migrants were used to shopping at markets in their homeland so they were drawn to Dandenong Market. “It’s been around that long, it should be celebrated,” he said.

Life comes back into great city By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong in an apt name for a municipality that’s getting better and better. From Springvale to Noble Park, Dandenong to Keysborough and Bangholme, the city is transforming in many ways. New businesses are springing up along Bangholme’s Riverend Road - there’s Cornish College, vineyard Craft and Co Farm, training and education facility Nine Dragons Horse Club, and Melbourne Cable Park. The cable park could be open by Christmas and will be home to lakes for water-skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Spokesman Ian Clark said the River End Business Community would be making a combined $15 million-plus investment and creating about 180 new jobs. Dandenong South is also set for a business boost, with a new bus route to run between Lynbrook Railway Station and Dandenong Railway Station along Abbotts Road from Sunday 13 November. MatchWorks business development manager Maria Ferreira-Correia said the new bus route would help employers to “benefit from some really good candidates”. “What’s stopping them from getting a job is they don’t have a car,” she said. Keysborough South welcomed a new bus route on 28 August, which is serving residents who previously had no public transport access within four kilometres. Residents will soon have a new shopping centre, too, at Hutton and Chapel roads, and a community hub and school are in the pipeline. The State Government delivered money to buy land for the school in the 2016-’17 budget, and Greater Dandenong Council has committed cash and planning resources to the hub project. The council will also chip in $352,000 to develop vacant 1.6 hectare parkland in the Saralands estate, at Stanley Road and Westwood Boulevard. Recreation will also receive a boost in central Keysborough.

Dandenong Civic Centre and Harmony Square. The council allocated $3.3 million towards a new pavilion, car park and access road at Tatterson Park, plus $3.26 million for the project from the Federal and State governments. “Next year’s budget there’ll be another allocation for another $3-odd million,” corporate services director Mick Jaensch said. “Those two ovals are MCG-sized football ovals. “They’re really, really well-used yet we don’t have a pavilion to go with it. “I think it will be a real jewel.” The council’s budget also included $8.65 million for the Springvale Civic Precinct, including the Springvale Town Hall redevelopment. “That’s going to receive a really major facelift

which will be really noticeable for the users of the hall,” Mr Jaensch said. That work starts this month, is due for completion next June, and will include new heating and cooling, improved lighting and sound, and a deck. The precinct revitalisation’s $40 million second stage is due for completion in 2020 and will include a library, meeting spaces and outdoor areas. Noble Park will soon say goodbye to the three level crossings that clog up the town centre. An elevated rail will replace the crossings at Heatherton, Corrigan and Chandler roads, creating community space beneath the train line. The Revitalising Central Dandenong project

started in 2006 and will continue for the next five to 10 years. Key projects include transforming Lonsdale Street into a green, pedestrian-friendly boulevard; creating Halpin Way and Settlers Square to link Dandenong Railway Station with the town’s heart; Dandenong Civic Centre and Harmony Square; the Australian Taxation Office and Government services buildings; Quest Apartments; and Salvation Army regional headquarters. Gary Castricum has either lived or worked in Dandenong for his entire life - almost 60 years. “The city’s been so significantly revitalised,” he said. “We’re seeing so much life coming back to the centre of the city.”

IT’S GREAT IN GREATER DANDENONG
From livestock to market stalls Cattle, pigs and sheep were the items for sale when Dandenong Market officially opened for business on Tuesday 10 October 1866. An informal market sprung up on the pavements around the stockyards shortly after, where farmers sold surplus produce and second-hand items. The market took place fortnightly at first but soon became a weekly event. By 1870 up to 300 vendors and buyers attended the market for livestock, fruit, dairy products, skins, lard, honey, hay and other farm produce. Farmers from throughout the La Trobe Valley and Gippsland travelled to Dandenong to buy and sell. In 1926 the market started the move to the site it calls home today. It officially opened at Clow and Cleeland streets on 4 October 1927. The produce hall was on the Clow Street corner and the stock market sale ring and yards extended up Cleeland Street. During World War II the market provided vital food supplies from local farms and factories for the war effort. From June 1940, all produce sections and the showgrounds grandstand had been converted
Dandenong Market in 1924. into sleeping quarters for more than 1000 recruits. Following almost 90 years of continual arguments and discussions, the stock market was re-
moved from the heart of Dandenong in 1958 and into a purpose-built site on Cheltenham Road, behind the Dandenong rail yards.
It hosted its first cattle sale in January 1958 and by October 1959 all the livestock was removed from the market. In 1975, the market’s old produce hall was demolished and new brick produce and fruit halls were built further along Cleeland Street. The council wanted to retain the rural atmosphere and European market style so retained an open air section and used the slogan ‘City shopping with a country atmosphere’ to encourage shoppers. The following December, Dandenong City Council started a six-month trial opening the market on Fridays in addition to Tuesdays to boost revenue. It was successful and Saturday trading was added in 1982. Dandenong promoted itself as The Market Town. Sunday trading started on 6 October 2013. Today, Dandenong Market features more than 200 traders spread over 8000-plus square metres. It brings together 150 different nationalities under one roof and sells fresh local produce, meat, vegetables, cheeses and spices.

■ Crime fighting boost but .....
Police up in the air Plans to close Endeavour Hills Police Station on weekend nights remain uncertain despite 20 extra trained police being re-allocated to the Casey region. However the news has led Casey council to raise its flag which had flown at half-mast due to the soaring crime rate. Casey’s police district inspector Don Brown confirmed the fully-trained officers would be re-allocated to frontline duties – such as watchhouse and divisional van patrols – in Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills from 14 November. “They will not be tied up with any other taskforce or any other units.” Inspector Brown said further recruits are expected in Casey in April as part of a state-wide rollout of an extra 300 officers and a new police resourcing model. The boosted police numbers would target the numerous thefts of vehicles, thefts from vehicles and aggravated burglaries, he said. “We will reduce the high-harm offending such as aggravated burglaries and robberies. “There is light at the end of the tunnel.” Insp Brown said he couldn’t answer whether the trialled closure of Endeavour Hills Police Station on weekend nights, which had already been deferred, would still go ahead. “The closure hasn’t yet started and we don’t know how many police we’re getting (in April).” Recent official crime statistics show nearly 50 burglaries, 40 assaults and 150 thefts a week in Casey. The crime rate rose by 14.5 per cent on a per capita basis in the 12 months up to June 2016. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles welcomed the re-allocation but the “only sustainable solution” was 189 recruits by 2022. At a council meeting on 4 October, Casey Mayor Sam Aziz successfully reversed the halfmast flag protest. He said the original motion was “outside the square” but necessary to highlight that “we were a city in distress”. “We are now a city of appreciation that we’re getting the resources that police need to make our community safer.”
If Casey is to beat the “crime tsunami that Daniel Andrews failed to prevent, a significant and sustained injection of extra police is desperately needed.
”
– Edward O’Donohue In a triumphant Facebook post, Cr Aziz wrote “Cop that! It worked!” to critical “armchair commentators who accused me of being political”. Cr Aziz said he would continue to press for tougher sentencing, deportation of dual-national offenders and a state-federal joint taskforce to tackle youth gangs. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said extra police had been funded as part of a $596 million public safety package in the May budget. “Let’s be very clear – Cr Sam Aziz and the Casey council do not dictate the Government’s policies on policing matters, nor any other state matter. Perhaps councillors should’ve focused more on local government issues if they are concerned about their prospects of re-election. “We face a number of complex law and order challenges – including the scourge of family violence, the need to crack down on gangs and gun crime – which is why this Government continues to give Victoria Police the people, technology and infrastructure they need to keep our community safe.” Police Minister Lisa Neville said police made the resourcing decision as an acknowledgment of “growing pressures” in the Casey growth corridor. Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue said the “handful” of extra announced police was a “drop in the ocean of what is needed”. “These few extra police won’t even cover the 30 plus police in Casey that have been taken from frontline duties to task forces in recent months. “If Casey is to beat the crime tsunami that Daniel Andrews failed to prevent, a significant and sustained injection of extra police is desperately needed.”

Machete drama charge By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two confessed drug-users have faced court accused of an attempted home-break in Noble Park to which one of them brought a machete. Ali Dileri, 26, of no fixed address, and Owrak Azhany, 37, of Doveton, were arrested soon after the alleged attempted burglary in Latimer Street about 2pm on 2 October. They appeared in separate bail hearings at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court the next day. Dileri, who was accused of holding the 70-centimetre machete, was refused bail. Azhany was successful in his application. Dileri and Azhany were allegedly observed by a neighbour walking to the rear of the house, knocking on a door and receiving no answer. Azhany was accused of attempting to force open a side window with a jemmy bar, according to police. As they walked away down the street, the pair
were arrested by police and also charged over a stolen Camry parked nearby. Azhany was allegedly found holding a jemmy bar, white gloves, a black glove, $515 cash, and substances believed to be heroin, ice and an LSDtab in separate zip-lock bags. Only released from a immigration detention centre a month ago, Azhany was facing a pending theft of motor vehicle charge on summons at the time. Dileri was carrying the machete, two gloves and a suspected-stolen Nintendo DS games device, police alleged. He was out on bail over charges including burglary, theft of a vehicle and possessing suspected stolen goods from two separate incidents in June and August. Dileri’s lawyer, Nadine Daniel, argued the pending burglary charge related to the thenhomeless accused being found asleep on a couch in what he thought was a vacant house. He had been living in a Dandenong boarding

house that closed less than two months ago, the court was told. Ms Daniel argued that Dileri could be assessed for CREDIT bail to assist with his drug issues, had unconfirmed “stable” accommodation with an elderly man in a boarding house and that there were “flaws” in the prosecution case. She claimed the former Iranian’s admissions to the attempted burglary were induced by police threats that his permanent residency would be revoked. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Dileri had told police he was armed with a machete to scare occupants in the house. “It’s concerning that you’re walking the streets with a machete in the middle of the day.” He said he couldn’t bail Dileri without confirmation of a stable address. Dileri is scheduled to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for mention on 13 October while Azhany is expected to appear on 28 October.

By Casey Neill Swapping fines for treatment has transformed lives and earned two police officers Divisional Commendations. The Dandenong-based Alcohol Diversion Program has engaged 39 people, accounted for $600,000 in unpaid fines and cut drunk and disorderly offences by about 30 per cent. It will be showcased as a crime prevention tool in Amsterdam next month. Spearheads Senior Sergeant Frank Bodor and Senior Constable Elyse Mason were honoured for their efforts at the Victoria Police Southern Metro Region Division Three award ceremony at Dandenong Civic Centre on Tuesday 4 October. “It’s outside the normal policing methods and it gives us another tool to be able to provide options for the people that we’re dealing with,” Sen Sgt Bodor said. “It was actually my thought bubble from the beginning. “It started two and a half years ago when I was on the road at Dandenong and we experienced the same clients for offences of drunk and drunk and disorderly basically coming through the door on a rotational basis. “We had no other alternative or options available to us other than infringement notices. “We really weren’t addressing the issue at hand - it’s more of a health issue than it is a criminal issue, from our perspective, for a lot of these people.” The program is voluntary. “We would introduce the program to the client. If they elected to participate, they would sign an agreement,” Sen Sgt Bodor said. The officer contacts the Sheriff ’s department to identify outstanding fines and has those warrants listed at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. “They would be assessed by the treatment providers and have a treatment program modelled to their needs,” he said. “That turnaround is generally in one to two days. It’s rapid access into those treatment programs.” A return court date is set, where the treatment provider details the client’s progress. “The magistrate would determine how long they would be on the program for, and wave
A man has been robbed and assaulted while walking from a bus stop in Eumemmerring about 8pm on Thursday 22 September. The 19-year-old from Eumemmerring was walking south through a car park between the bus top on Frawley Road and Olive Road when he was approached by a white station wagon. The car had about three male occupants and one of the males in the car called out to the victim but the victim kept walking. The offender then threw a bottle from the car at the victim, stated he had a gun and demanded the victim hand over the property he was carrying. The young man handed his wallet to the offender who then punched the victim in the face before leaving the scene. The victim sustained minor injuries but did not need medical attention. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
South Australian police charged a Dandenong man over an eight-year-old girl’s death in a Barossa Valley car crash. Shujaat Bahrami, 40, was behind the wheel of a Hyundai SUV that collided head-on with a Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel drive at Stockwell, just before 4pm on Sunday 2 October. An eight-year-old Kilburn girl was in the Hyundai’s back seat and died at the scene. The Hyundai’s other passengers, a 28-year-old woman from Kilburn and two girls aged 16 and 12 from Pooraka, were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police charged Mr Bahrami with one count of causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving, and one count of aggravated due care. He appeared before Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 4 October, where he was further remanded to face a bail application hearing on Monday 10 October.
Stolen car lights night sky A car stolen from Cranbourne was found alight in the middle of Pound Road West, Dandenong South. CFA crews called to the blaze about 1am on Sunday 2 October extinguished the fire. Thieves stole the 2004 silver Ford Falcon from a Cranbourne address on Sunday 25 September.

Many had more than 100 contacts before participating, and zero after. “These people spend a minimum four hours in the cells and that needs to be monitored by police,” he said. “This program allows us to release our members

A Dandenong man confronted a would-be thief who forced his way into his Gwenda Street home. An eight-year-old girl, 29-year-old woman and 36-year-old man were asleep when the intruder jemmied open a back door, about 4.45am on Tuesday 4 October. The man woke up and approached the attempted thief, who fled the scene empty-handed. He was described as Caucasian, tall and unshaven, with blonde hair, black clothing and black gloves. 20 years ago 14 October 1996 Take heart, Dande, you’re not the worst A “radical” approach is needed to revive Dandenong’s town centre, says a world authority on urban planning. Only something that was out of the ordinary would help pull the city centre together and revive it as a place people would like to be, said Mr John Landry. Mr Landry, who runs the British-based firm Comedia, told a spellbound audience of City of Greater Dandenong officers, leading community figures and the press that he saw nothing wrong in the city being split by the Princes Highway. “In fact I rather like it,” he said.
“The trees and the shops give the city something of an identity.” But the problem was that, like many other cities in Europe and Australia, its services library, market and rail station - were towards the edge of the city. Dandenong lacked a heart and “critical mass”.

Aromas wrapped in tasty parcel By Cam Lucadou-Wells When Vijay Sivaraj cuts into his hot foil pouches, out bursts a flurry of steam-propelled aromas. It’s the appetising climax of an intriguing cooking method at Hot Pouch Bar and Dining on the terrace of Dandenong Market. First he folds up his generous serving of prawns, banana leaf, tomato-based sambal sauce, okra, mushrooms, greens and chilli into a foil pouch. On a hot plate, the parcel expands with steam. Its ingredients stew in their own juices as the parcel expands into a mini wine bladder. The tension is then literally cut with a knife. As well as bringing culinary novelty, Mr Sivaraj has plans - pending a liquor licence - for live night music and bar dining under a multitude of hanging light globes. Reversal ends up behind bars A disqualified driver with two suspended sentences hanging over his head has been jailed for three months after drunkenly reversing his friend’s car from the middle of a residential street. Elia Pakwan, of Eumemmerring, blew 0.26 - more than five times the legal blood-alcohol limit - shortly after police watched him drive six metres on course to hit another parked vehicle on McNabb Court, Dandenong North, on 14 December 2014, a court heard. At the time, Pakwan had been recently disqualified from driving for four years, and was subject to suspended jail terms - eight months for recklessly causing injury and three months for an early count of disqualified driving. He conceded to police that he had drank three beers but had only sought to move his drunken friend’s car from the middle of the street. Prior to his Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 3 October, Pakwan had allegedly failed to appear at court three times over the matter. Pakwan’s lawyer argued there were exceptional circumstances to justify not invoking the suspended sentence, such as no further offending since late 2014. The accused - who had a lengthy
history of drink-driving - had made “significant strides” in curbing his alcohol and cannabis abuse through the help of family and church members, the lawyer said. “He stopped using cannabis a year ago and never drinks to excess. “He was previously drinking large amounts of spirits and beer on a daily basis.” Pakwan was also due to become a father in five months, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said there were exceptional circumstances only for the eightmonth suspended jail term for recklessly causing injury. Mr Vandersteen took into account the nature of the offending, Pakwan’s lack of recent offending, remission from drugs and alcohol, stable accommodation and his impending fatherhood. An eight-month jail term would be disproportionate but not a three-month term, Mr Vandersteen said. “You’ve taken very positive steps. It’s a pity you didn’t bring (the matter) to court earlier. Maybe you weren’t as stable as it was put to me.” Pakwan will be released from prison before Christmas and the expected birth of his child. His driver’s licence was cancelled for a further four years.

Dad drives on depression message By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong-based businessman’s campaign to honour his late son and raise awareness about depression will be haring around the Mount Panorama circuit at the Bathurst 1000 motor-racing meet on 7-9 October. Craig Membrey, who owns Membrey’s Transport and Crane Hire, has toured his Kenworth T904 showtruck with a powerful mural of his son Rowan nationally over the past five years. The truck has been a regular feature at the Berwick Show in recent years. The cause will again be featured on a 2014 Porsche 991 with a huge rear-wing spoiler and Beyondblue in the Carrera Cup this weekend. It will be promoted to Beyondblue’s 1.6 million Facebook followers, Mr Membrey said. He hopes the mental health message will also reach out to the hordes of motor-racing followers lining the mountain track and watching the race on TV.

Mr Membrey said he had been inspired by former Beyondblue chief executive Jeff Kennett who told him that dozens of young lives would have been saved. “I’m not a hero,” Mr Membrey said. “I’m just a father who lost a son.” For help, contact Beyondblue on 1300 22 4636 or beyondblue.org.au.

Chisholm Institute and La Trobe University are bringing degrees to Dandenong. From next year students will be able to study bachelor degrees in accounting, information technology, healthcare, early learning, and community services at Chisholm’s Dandenong, Berwick and Frankston campuses. Chisholm CEO Maria Peters said the partnership would provide access and opportunity for Chisholm students who wanted a pathway into bachelor degrees without having to travel long distances.

Comfort food was delivered in spades for Casey’s busy police officers on Blue Ribbon Day. Casey Neighbourhood Watch served up 12-dozen donuts to officers in Cranbourne, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills police stations on 29 September. CNW co-ordinator Rob Ward said it was a token of appreciation for officers’ “remarkable job in protecting the community”. “Police sign up for their shift and never know if they will sign off at the end. “This is just to say thank you.” A man who has been jailed 30 times in the past 20 years has been spared a further stint in jail. The 40-year-old had done every form of sentence in his numerous court appearances, including drug treatment orders and suspended sentences, but had appeared to have turned the corner, his lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October. The man faced a disqualified driving charge but argued he had assumed at the time his licence had been reinstated upon his
release from jail. He had since been out of trouble with the law for seven months - his longest stint without arrest for a long time, his lawyer said. The judge commented that there was no point jailing the man again. “You would do it on my ear,” he said. The man was ordered to perform 50 hours of community work. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams has taken a keen interest in Casey council electioneering, especially that of former ALP member and newly turned Liberal Rafal Kaplon. Ms Williams told Star News she had taken issue with her image being used in Cr Kaplon’s mailout. “Although I bear Rafal no ill will and have worked with him on a number of local matters, I want to make it clear, my permission was not sought and the use of my image is unauthorised for the purpose of election material.” Recently Ms Williams urged Cr Kaplon to modify his Facebook post about a shortage of police numbers in Casey.
Two Casey businesses have been recognised for their export innovation at the 37th Governor of Victoria Export Awards. Clyde business Schreurs and Sons won the agribusiness award and the Victorian Export Award for Innovation Excellence went to Lynbrook business Worldpoly. Worldpoly is an Australian-based company that has successfully lead the polyethylene pipe and fittings industry for more than 55 years. It is a leader in the development and production of international standard PE pipe welding fusion equipment. The company now exports an Australian-engineered butt welding machine range to 107 countries worldwide. The business started when Tom Hall Senior started as a tool maker in Australia some 70 years ago, following a position as foreman at the Commonwealth Aircraft Factory during the World War II. The company’s initial success came from orders received selling pipe from farm to farm across Victoria and NSW. More than 50 businesses entered this year’s awards which are designed to recognise the hard work and economic contributions exporters make to Victoria and boost the state’s business profile locally and internationally. Exports are a big economic driver for Victoria and added $39.4 billion in goods and services to the economy in 2014-15. “These awards are a great way to recognise the hard work of our exporting businesses in a range of different industries across the state,” Minister for Small Business Philip Dalidakis said. “We’re leading the country in small business growth and exports, and these awards give us the opportunity to provide our local businesses with the recognition they deserve for taking the very best of Victoria to the world.”

Online plea to pay for boy’s funeral Friends and family of a four-year-old boy who died in a house fire are rallying around to raise money for his funeral. Their GoFundMe page tells how the boy’s grandfather searched the Ann Street house in vain before he was driven out by smoke from the blaze. Firefighters later found the boy’s body in his mother’s bedroom. Emergency services were called to the townhouse just before 8am on Saturday 1 October. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics took five people to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition, four with smoke inhalation and one with a leg injury. They took a toddler suffering from burns to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a stable condition. The house was extensively damaged. Investigators deemed the fire non-suspicious and are preparing a report for the Coroner. The GoFundMe page, titled Boy (4) Dies in a Tragic House Fire, is aiming to raise $8000 and attracted more than 100 donations topping $5300
in three days. The page said an electrical fault started the fire. “A young mother of two wakes up at 8am to hear her youngest son, aged one, screaming, burnt and in tears,” it said. “She picks her son up and gets him out of the room while her brother rushes to take him downstairs. “Everyone in the house is woken up and accounted for except her oldest son. “Everyone is searching for him in the house and screaming out his name, but there was no answer.” “The grandfather of the boys rushed in to look for him under the bed and everywhere else but was losing air himself because of so much smoke.” The page said the fire started in the mother’s bedroom, and that was where the boy was found hiding next to the window when fire fighters and ambulance crews arrived. “It was too late, (he) had already passed away.” Visit https://www.gofundme.com/2s7376k to donate.

Nabbing more than 400 criminals in 15 months earned Sergeant Hafiz Mayar and his team a Divisional Commendation. The Greater Dandenong Response and Tasking Unit received the honour at the Victoria Police Southern Metro Region Division Three award ceremony at Dandenong Civic Centre on Tuesday 4 October. “A lot of youths were congregating in the library square, there were a few fights happening between different groups,” Sgt Mayar said. “Our unit was created to restore some public order in the area. “I was given three members. “We liaised with Greater Dandenong Council, Dandenong Plaza security and management and other stakeholders. “We identified the hot spots. By patrolling the hot spots we picked up offenders.” They picked up more than 400 between 9 March last year and 12 June this year on drugs, weapons, drunkenness and warrant offences, averaging more than two each day. “On one occasion we arrested a guy with $50,000 worth of ice in his underpants,” Sgt Mayar said. “On another occasion our unit arrested another guy carrying $200,000 of marijuana - 11 kilograms.” They also helped Thomas Street traders, in particular, to beef up security and stop a spate of break-ins. “We also targeted by patrolling the area. We arrested two of the burglars that were responsible,” he said. Sgt Mayar had three members at any given time, but 18 officers rotated through the unit. “The unit has now been absorbed. It’s become part of the Frontline Tactical Unit,” he said. The group commendation recipients included Sergeant Leigh Mackey, Acting Sergeant James

Hate won’t stop Muslim forum By Cam Lucadou-Wells An organiser says a stream of hate mail will not deter a region-first forum to combat Islamophobia in Dandenong this month. Casey-based teacher Inaz Janif said she organised the forum, The Right to Remain Muslim, due to several reports of young Muslim women being assaulted in public. Among the victims was a woman whose hijab was snatched off her head by a male in a Hallam supermarket. Ms Janif was also aware of a group of girls wearing hijabs who were shoved into a wall by an attacker in a Melbourne shopping centre and another nearly forced off the road by a hate-speaking fellow driver. “These are people who I know and care about. Should these girls lose their lives over this?” Ms Janif said after initial reluctance by police to prosecute the supermarket attacker, he was handed a 12-month good-behaviour bond. However, she said many victims - vulnerable, young and from refugee backgrounds - were not comfortable reporting such attacks. “That’s why it’s so disturbing to see people in the national political sphere giving oxygen to people who say Muslims are not welcome. “It’s one thing to verbally attack people, anoth-
er thing to put our hands on other people.” Posts on a south-east based Facebook page that incited violence against Muslims and mosques was also disturbing, Ms Janif said. She requested the date and place of this month’s forum not be publicised due to “hate mail” she’s already received as well as security concerns by police. Ms Janif said the forum was a first of its kind in the south-east. It was designed to promote understanding of “racism, bigotry and Islamophobia”, and to make young people resilient and stronger against antiIslam sentiment. “We need to highlight the importance of reporting these crimes and knowing it’s not OK. By staying silent, it is giving the message that it’s OK. “People have been quiet for so long, and this is trying to open the discussion.” Speakers at the forum include Monique Toohey on being resilient to racism, Yassir Morsi on understanding Islamophobia and Mohamud Hersi. It is supported by Project Mosaic funding from the Islamic Council of Victoria, and supported by Casey Against Racism and Islamophobia Watch Australia.
Petition for speed camera pays off A new fixed speed camera will be switched on soon in Narre Warren. The Narre Warren camera will be located at corner of Narre Warren North and Ernst Wanke roads and is the first of 18 new cameras to be activated in coming months.
Variable message signs will be in place, warning drivers that they will be enforced soon and will stay in place for a fortnight after the activation of the cameras. Superintendent Kevin Sheridan said he was pleased that the community was beginning to understand that cam-
eras saved lives. “More than 300 residents signed a petition to have the camera at Narre Warren installed,” he said. “It is encouraging to see local communities being pro-active towards keeping people safe on our roads.“

Once overgrown but now it’s loved By Cam Lucadou-Wells An unkept outdoors area at Hallam Senior College has been transformed into a garden of serenity by Dandenong South East Rotary Club and a former student. The area, previously avoided by students, will now be a sanctuary for art activity as well as being the ideal place to chill out, arts leading teacher Amanda Muxworthy said at the garden opening on 6 October. “It’s been amazing to see. For the past 18 months I’ve wanted to tackle this space,” Ms Muxworthy said. “The students are loving it.” Ms Muxworthy oversaw the project while the design was conceived by landscaper Aaron Betts, who only graduated from the college several years ago. Up to a dozen Rotarian volunteers, including John Peck, Neil Fullard and president Athol Bailey, gave creation to Mr Betts’ vision over several weekends.
They constructed benches and raised beds, which are filled with succulents, other droughttolerant plants, fruits, vegetables and students’ artwork. They gave a lick of paint to the grapevine-entangled pergola and enclosure walls, and poured down crushed rock in between the beds. Mr Peck said the Rotarians loved plying their handiwork and showing students what Rotary Clubs were all about. “We were looking around for good projects to do,” he told Star News. During the opening, there was talk of the college’s VCAL students working with Rotary to assembly wooden hands for war victims. Principal Anne Martin said the area which abuts the college’s arts studios was traditionally overgrown and unloved. Nearby “before” photos show the muddied, barren area in the early throes of transformation. Now with a bit of a love, it will be a great space for students and staff, she said.

Bail approved after second go An Endeavour Hills man has succeeded in his second bail attempt after being accused over a spate of commercial burglaries and a home invasion. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told that Qadir Rahmani, 25, had the support of a stable family and no priors for breaching bail or failing to appear in court. His lawyer told the court that Rahmani, charged with possession of ice, had a drug problem that could be behind the alleged offences. She said his remand stint - his first time in custody - had a “sobering effect” on him. According to a tendered police summary, Rahmani - a disqualified driver who was out on bail and on a community corrections order - was identified in a stolen Toyota Kluger at several of the five burglaries which occurred in August and September. He was accused of breaking into a Notting Hill computer retailer and stealing nine computers valued at $8860, a $70 petrol drive off in Hallam, stealing $14,365 of tools from two break-ins at a Discount Trader store in Mt Waverley and the theft of $2000 worth of security equipment in a separate burglary. At dawn on 31 August, Rahmani and an unknown associate allegedly entered a Berwick home by forcing the roller door and kicking in the internal garage door leading inside the home. After being disturbed by an occupant, they ran away and escaped in a black Mazda 6 with an attached trailer. Rahmani also allegedly sped at 120 km/h in a 60 km/h zone from police as he left the Bayswater Hotel on 17 August. Police immediately terminated the pursuit, the
court was told. The Kluger was found with a false paper number plate 150 metres from Rahmani’s home on 15 September. Inside the car was a Melbourne Pathology receipt with Rahmani’s name and address, police alleged. A water feature allegedly stolen from a SJD display home by Rahmani on 4 September was also found in his front yard. In his home were other suspected proceeds of crime such as a nail gun, heat gun, hedge trimmer, power and hand tools and a printer. At the time, the accused was on bail over a theft of a rental car which was used in a petrol drive-off in Officer in July, as well as theft of a motorbike in 2015. Police alleged he had breached bail conditions such as not driving and not attending an alcohollicensed premises. Rahmani had earlier told his first bail hearing in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 September that he had been accused because a “larger man covered with a face mask” had been seen at one of the scenes. “They’re basically going by my body type.” On 3 October, magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the prosecution case appeared strong but also Rahmani’s age, stable residence, and an impressive family witness. Mr Vandersteen said Rahmani’s family showed “intense loyalty” to the accused. “It’s now for you to return that.” Rahmani was bailed on strict conditions including a night curfew, daily reporting to Endeavour Hills Police Station, not to drive or use drugs, to associate with co-accused and to surrender his passport. He was ordered for assessment on the CREDIT bail program for drug treatment.

Voters shine spending spotlight By Cam Lucadou-Wells Ratepayers in Casey’s north have grilled council candidates about why they’re seemingly being short-changed. At a Four Oaks Ward candidate forum in Narre Warren North on 3 October, resident Tracey Blythe pointed out to candidates that owners of the region’s large acreages paid the “highest amount of rate revenue of any ward” but had “the least amount of money back (from the council)”. Ms Blythe said that she and children and dogwalkers had to walk on the roads due to a lack of footpaths. “I don’t have a problem with some of the jewelin-the-crown infrastructure being built that we all benefit from. “My question is what percentage is a reasonable amount to give back to (us)?” A Harkaway resident bemoaned the lack of interest that candidates seemed to have for his village of 1500 votes whose residents were paying hefty rates but had to do without water, sewage and gas services. Seven of 21 Four Oaks candidates fronted the 50-strong audience at the event staged by Narre Warren North Community Association. The attendees were incumbent Rosalie Crestani, Bill Klemmer, Barry Erlenwein, Chris Sargeant, Richard Barrow and ex-mayors Shar Balmes and Brian Oates. Cr Crestani said Ms Blythe’s question was “fair”. She said most money being delivered into the area was in services such as child and maternal health but didn’t recall any specific capital works. “I rely a lot on your feedback. I’ll work towards that footpath for you.” Mr Oates said he was concerned about a $154 million fund held by Casey that pointed to an “underspend” over the past 15 years. “My view is we’ve been overcharged $10 million a year for the past 15 years if that’s the case. “The council could go a year without even collecting rates because it’s got so much money stashed away, so it appears.” He also asked why Casey’s maintenance regime was the highest expense in its budget while

Mr Sargeant - who works in construction - said he couldn’t understand why the council couldn’t create a footpath, given its cost would be about $55 a metre. infrastructure in return. “There’s not enough transparency in council. I don’t know where that money is being spent.” Mr Klemmer urged residents to get onto their local councillors to ensure their needs were being represented in the council budget. Mr Barrow said some residents may be against footpaths in the Narre Warren North village so it
should be a topic for consultation. Ms Balmes, who lived in the town, said her role as a councillor wasn’t to see “my vision come to pass”. “It’s about the community’s vision.” She also urged residents to press their representatives if they had concerns with drain maintenance or other issues.

Sewing skills are stitch in time By Casey Neill Sewing skills are giving migrant women a leg up in their new homeland. But Springvale’s Twich Women’s Sewing Collective is about more than just skills. “Twich is an organisation which supports women by coming together, socialising, learning an activity they’re interested in, and maybe making a business idea out of it in the future,“ Nyachuol John from Twich said. The group is welcoming new students to sign up to study a Certificate III in Clothing Production. The part-time course takes 18 months to complete. Twich founder Abuk Bol explained that this made it more appealing to mums with limited time. An RMIT teacher hosts classes at the store from 10.30am to 3pm two days a week. Ms John was thrilled to attend a graduation ceremony for the first three women to complete the course last month. “I was so proud. It’s a milestone for Twich,“ she said. The students were all from different cultural backgrounds. “We’re looking for everyone to come and do the certificate,“ she said. “This year looking for 10 people, this place is much bigger.“ Ms John was referring to Twich’s relocation from Walker Street, Dandenong, to Lightwood Road, Springvale, in February. The other store was initially rent-free, and when the fees kicked in, the group couldn’t afford to stay. “It was really hard to find a place,“ Ms John said. “We thought since it was opposite the station, we’d have traffic. “We want to see if we can attract new customers.“ The store stocks bags, placemats, table runners and cushion covers, and makes clothing to order. Ms John got involved with Twich through vol-

I’ve learned a lot,“ she said. “We need more volunteers.“

Ms Bol couldn’t speak English when she arrived in Australia 12 years ago. She fled Sudan with her husband and children in 2004. “Back home I knew how to knit and how to sew,” she said. “When I came here, I tried to look for a job in what I know. But I didn’t have a certificate.” Ms Bol studied and got a job in the textiles industry, but found it hard to fit into the workplace. She led a small group from the Twich com-

Last year she received an Encouragement Award in the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards’ Corporate Citizen of the Year category. “Abuk demonstrates the qualities of perseverance, determination, innovation and resilience in the way she now assists others to enrich their own lives,” the awards judges said. THE LIFE OF THE CITY By CASEY NEILL Gary Castricum has either lived or worked in Dandenong for his entire life – almost 60 years. “Between my mother and my wife, I’ve shopped at Dandenong Market for all of my life,” he said. “My mother always shopped there on a Tuesday and now my wife shops there on Tuesdays. “I’ve only ever eaten for all of my life fresh produce from Dandenong Market. “It’s a terrific place to shop for fresh goods. “It’s an exciting place because of the cultural mix. “I like just walking around there. You feel like you’re anywhere in the world. “The market is a real attraction I think, to the city.” Mr Castricum lives in Berwick but travels to Dandenong to eat out, from Afghani to Indian, Asian and more. “That’s where I prefer to go. It’s ridiculously cheap as well,” he said. “It has great cafes so when I meet people these days, I meet them in Dandenong. “When they come along they go ‘wow!’.” He lists Young Uncles, Ginger Jones, Beletti and Melissa’s among his favourite meeting points.
“Dandenong is a great place to meet people and catch up with people,” he said. “It’s the capital of the southeast, it’s really the centre of the south-east. “It has fantastic transport connections. “The employment prospects are pretty good. “Job opportunities in Dandenong are better than almost anywhere in the south-east.” Mr Castricum said Dandenong’s people were very enthusiastic about their suburb and surrounds. “The great thing about Dandenong is the cultural mix,” he said. “That’s really its highlight.” He said Dandenong was the place to shop for furniture and had all the services he needed, from lawyers to accountants and beyond. “Dandenong’s really, really convenient from that point of view. It’s all there,” he said. He said the CBD was becoming busier - in a positive fashion. “The city’s been so significantly revitalised,” he said. “We’re seeing so much life coming back to the centre of the city.” There are several apartment buildings under construction in the town centre. “And I was driving through and

saw some really nice old places in reasonably good nick,” he said. “You’d get them for a pretty good price. “There is something for everyone, I think.” Dandenong’s revitalisation started in 2006 and will continue for the next five to 10 years. The State Government kicked off the $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong project to
rejuvenate the CBD and reestablish Dandenong as the south-east’s capital. Places Victoria is working with the City of Greater Dandenong, State Government agencies and the private sector to achieve the project. Key aspects include easier and safer pedestrian connections, less traffic congestion, improved public transport, a vibrant market, more people living and working in the city centre, and
attractive public spaces for people to relax and meet. With its impressive kerb-side appeal, four bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and an expansive kitchen, 16 Norris Street is eye-catching - so eye-catching that the residence has now become the highest selling dwelling in Noble Park. Real estate agent Dee Kawsar of iSell Aspendale Gardens said the property, on the market for 28 days, sold under the hammer for $1 million late last month which he believes is the first property to do so in the area. He said the final price had been a little bit of a surprise although there had been a lot of interest in the lead-up to the auction “The owner was expecting $900,000,” Dee explained. “They were over the moon (with the result), very happy at the auction. They cried. “It’s a beautiful house, the owner maintained it and presented it well during the open houses. “And houses like this in Noble Park are pretty hard to find at the moment.” He said that, however, in five to 10 years, as people continued to buy old houses and rebuild on blocks around the region, he expected more dwellings of similar ilk. From its first appearance 16 Norris Street stands out with its balcony, the neat low maintenance gardens and a double door entrance. The wide hallway is attractively tiled and leads to a study and a formal living area which is complete with plush carpet and down-lights. The ground level is complete with a powder room for guests, formal dining area, expansive family domain, theatre room, casual dining and an expansive kitchen. The kitchen includes an ample amount of cabinetry, plentiful bench space and

LOCATION OFFICER 3809
OFFICER OPENS UP The once sleepy suburb of Officer is being transformed into a vibrant, commercial and residential hub attracting first, second and third home buyers who are looking for their slice of real estate heaven. Perfectly positioned between Beaconsfield and Pakenham, Officer offers a rural setting with the convenience of suburban living. Residents enjoy fantastic access to shopping, transport and quality schools. Officer is also home to Cardinia Shire Council which opened state-of-the-art offices there in 2014. With its own train station, bus links and access to the Monash Freeway, Officer is an easy 54 kilometre commute to the Melbourne CBD. Quality developments are transforming Officer into a boom suburb with blocks of land to suit all price ranges and all needs. Cardinia council has had an Urban Design Framework (UDF) prepared to guide the growth and development of the Officer town centre as it evolves into what is anticipated will become a regional hub over the next decade. According to the council’s UDF, when fully developed the Officer town centre area alone will accommodate approximately 10,900 dwellings and 28,300 residents. The town centre is bounded by the Princes Highway to the north, Gum Scrub Creek to the east, Bridge Road to the south and the future North-South Arterial Road to the west. It is orientated around the railway station so that as it grows it becomes a transport hub with good links to public transport through buses and rail as well as road, walking and cycle routes. Activity centres, schools and community facilities within the precinct will create an estimated 6555 jobs, with approximately 4600 jobs in activity centres. According to the council, the town centre will provide a range of regional, subDJ

regional and local employment, civic, retail, commercial, office, housing, recreation, entertainment and community uses and activities that provide for the needs of residents, workers, businesses and visitors throughout the suburb and wider Cardinia area. Officer currently has an estimated 32,390 households and is projected to grow to a population of 175,562. KR Peters director Peter Nicholls likens Officer to “virgin land” about to take off. The sales staff at KR Peters, which is selling both Savannah Estate and Milli Terraces - two of the area’s newest developments - are so confident in the future of the suburb that they are opening an office in the old post office. “We believe it’s got more potential – it’s where all the growth is going to happen,” Mr Nicholls said. “In the past two years Clyde North and Clyde have been runaway successes but Officer is up and coming.”
Savannah is at the corner of Brunt and Rix roads and is surrounded by parkland and proposed sporting facilities. On a hilltop in the heart of Officer lies Timbertop Estate, one of Officer’s most established estates according to sales and marketing manager Jarod Mills “With some of the best views in the area stretching out to Western Port bay, Timbertop is now home to approximately 700 people with over 250 homes occupied. The estate will comprise around 770 homes upon completion,” Mr Mills said. “The estate is the perfect family location, situated within the Berwick Secondary School Zone and minutes from shops including Arena Shopping Centre. It’s also close to the Princes Freeway (M1), providing easy access to the rest of Melbourne. “There’s also a new two-hectare neighbourhood park coming this summer, offering something for everyone including walking tracks, playground equipment.
“Surrounded by native planting, go for a leisurely stroll and take in stunning views at the lookout areas,” he said. The Rise at Officer is located at the gateway to the suburb and is a boutique neighbourhood in arguably Officer’s best location, north of the Princes Highway and bordering the popular suburb of Beaconsfield. The development has proven popular with buyers who want to build larger homes for their growing families and for professional or retired couples who are looking to downsize from rural properties to a stylish urban community in an established area. Grandvue is one of the older more established estates in Officer with a wide range of primary, secondary schools and colleges nearby and a proposed new shopping centre across the road and the Toomuc recreation reserve only minutes away. Located at the corner of the Princes Highway and Grandvue Boulevard, this estate has been up and running since 2011 with more than 1000 lots and is now releasing stage 11. Unlike many of the other estates, Grandvue is quite established already with larger lots. Set on undulating land it offers a variety of block types and sizes and build types. The Banksia Estate, an exclusive development comprising just 92 lots, is in walking distance of the new Officer town centre. It is situated at the corner of Rix Road and Brunt Road, Officer, next door to the hugely successful and sold out Park Central Development. Also selling in the area is the Lavender Estate which, like all of the Officer estates, is within reach of 33 schools and two hospitals and all the other facilities that this future regional centre offers. Stages four, five and six are currently up and running with stages seven and eight coming on-line next year. Monday, 10 October, 2016 DANDENONG JOURNAL 17
LOCATION OFFICER 3809 SPRINGBOARD FOR SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS Maranatha Christian School Junior School (ELC to Year 5) at Officer and Doveton, provides students with a springboard for the mastering of concepts and process in the curriculum, developing essential spiritual, social, personal and physical skills. In fostering a positive attitude to learning at this early stage of schooling, staff aim to create an eagerness that will assist their development and achievement in later school and adult years. The teaching program challenges students and demonstrates the rigor and types of assessment tasks to be expected of them at the next level. Specialist teachers work in collaboration with classroom teachers to create enriching experiences and real-life connections in students’ learning.
Class teachers provide daily support and care for each child’s individual needs. The teachers’ dedication, care and compassion for the children develops trust, integrity and honesty. This helps in developing positive relationships with other adults over their life’s journey. Biblical values and attributes are taught and caught, as are all the educational concepts. Maranatha is a Christian learning community, a place of safety and discipleship, where passionate, committed Christian teachers partner with parents to nurture their students. For more information phone Maranatha Christian School on 9709 7217 or visit maranatha.vic.edu.au.
LAND YOURSELF A NEW LIFE One of Officer’s premium estates, Grandvue sets itself apart from its competitors by offering titled lots to buyers with superior views of the surrounding area. The elevated living proposition often creates a unique and interesting build outcome. Homes built across split levels allow for an abundance of natural light and separate living areas which often cater to families with children. Owners can find themselves a builder who they can trust and really maximise the attributes of their block. Buyers don’t have to wait six to 12 months for the construction of roads, services to be connected and titles to be released, they
can now inspect the prestigious Panorama release offering larger lot sizes of 1001 square metres starting from $278,000. Grandvue is ideally located and within easy reach of all life’s necessities. A wide range of primary, secondary schools and colleges are on the doorstep and a proposed new shopping centre across the road and the Toomuc recreation reserve are only minutes away. Journey time to Melbourne’s CBD via the M1 is approximately 45 minutes with train services running directly from the Officer station, which is a short three minute drive from Grandvue. Grandvue Boulevard, Officer, is open seven days a week, 11am-6pm. Contact Grandvue on 1300 737 851.

LOCATION OFFICER 3809 COME ALIVE AT TOP ESTATE With the growth of communities like Parklea’s Timbertop Estate and the development of the town centre, Officer is becoming a hot spot for families seeking a mix of country and convenience. Officer is one of Cardinia Shire’s most rapidly growing areas with its population forecast to increase to 34,043 in the next 20 years. As the face of Officer continues to change, the area has kept its country charm, preserving small communities nestled in between rolling hills and rural land. On a hilltop in the heart of Officer lies Timbertop Estate, one of Officer’s most established estates. With some of the best views in the area stretching out to Western Port bay, Timbertop is now home to approximately 700 people with more than 250 homes occupied. The estate will comprise around 770 homes upon completion. Timbertop’s safe, community feel immediately attracted the Manelski family, reminding them of where they grew up. At Timbertop, residents really know their neighbours with the residents’ group running regular events including holiday themed events, outdoor cinema nights, and wine and cheese nights to bring residents together and promote safety and friendship. “There’s heaps to do in the estate on the weekends - you don’t have to move too far from your front door,” said Ben Manelski. The estate is the perfect family location, situated within the Berwick Secondary School Zone and is minutes from shops including Arena Shopping Centre. It’s also close to the Princes Freeway, providing easy access to the rest of Melbourne.
There’s also a new two hectare neighbourhood park coming this summer, offering something for everyone including walking tracks, playground equipment and a slide for the kids, barbecue facilities and picnic area for Sunday lunches and a large kickabout area for sport lovers. Surrounded by native planting, residents can go for a leisurely stroll and take in stunning views at the lookout areas. DANDENONG DERMATOLOGY CENTRE safe affordable laser treatment
Laser treatment that is safe, effective and affordable! DANDENONG DERMATOLOGY CENTRE, WITH THEIR EXTENSIVE RANGE OF MEDICAL GRADE LASERS, OFFER LASER TREATMENT FOR MANY SKIN CONDITIONS AND MOST SKIN TYPES. Dandenong Dermatology Centre have an extensive range of medical grade lasers offering treatments for most skin conditions and most skin types. The versatile Dual Yellow Copper Bromide laser is a proven effective laser for a wide range of skin conditions; the Ellipse is the latest generation IPL available to treat a variety of conditions safely: Emerge fractional skin resurfacing laser will bring your most beautiful skin to light, and is suitable for very light skin and very dark skin Rosacea: A common skin condition that causes red pimples, flushing and broken capillaries (telangiectasia) affecting mainly the cheeks and nose of adults. This irritating condition, often causing uncomfortable face flushing can be safely treated with almost no downtime. Sun damage: Skin aging is accelerated by sun exposure and decreased production of collagen. For the removal of age spots, uneven pigmentation and diffuse redness, our lasers offer the latest technology available. Facial treatments are most popular but most body areas can be treated including neck, chest and backs of hands. Treatment of sun damaged skin helps to keep a younger and fresher look and most skin types can be treated. Acne: A common skin disease of teenagers, often affecting the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back, associated with overproduction of sebum (oily substance). Treatment is effective by slowing down the production of the sebum, with a typical course of therapy being four treatments at three weeks apart. Vascular lesions: These lesions can include port wine stains, broken capillaries, diffuse redness, haemangioma and cherry angioma. They can occur in many sizes and shapes and can be found all over the body. Most skin types are easily treated with the correct energy output for your individual complexion.
WHAT’S NEW: Skin resurfacing: Fractional laser for skin resurfacing is available to treat light and dark skin, knock out those deepest wrinkles, improve the most challenging scars and help correct a variety of other skin imperfections. Treatments are well tolerated without lengthy recovery times. Leg Veins: As we age valves in our leg veins become less efficient, so less blood is pumped back from the legs. this means blood vessels in our legs become larger, darker and more visible. Smaller vessels can be improved by Nd:Yag laser using a precisely calculated pulse of laser energy directed to the leg vein vessel being treated Glycolic Peels: If laser therapy is not for you there are other options! Glycolic Peels are a specific technique for skin renewal that help remove the damaged layer of surface skin cells revealing fresh skin, stimulating cell turnover and encouraging anti-aging effects in the skin layers. A series of glycolic acid peels can help the skin appear healthier, smoother, plumper, firmer, less oily and more even toned. All treatments are tailored to the individual and are safe, effective and affordable! Dandenong Dermatology Centre offers your first assessment consultation for free! To arrange an appointment just call 9791 3455.

Hotel’s winning and helping out By Victoria Stone-Meadows Kelly’s Motor Club Hotel in Cranbourne has won a national award for its gaming room and contributed money to a local community charity. The hotel was awarded Best Gaming Venue in the regional category at the 2016 Australian Hotel Association National Awards for Excellence. Hotel manager Michael Goldie said the award was a great validation of the hard work staff had put in to redesign the gaming area. “Last year we decided to look at how the gaming room operated,” he said. “All gaming rooms previously were designed for NSW standards, where you put the machines in and get as much as you can out of them. “We wanted to make ours more customerfriendly.” The hotel made changes such as separating the machines to give people more space and increased the base lighting level by 400 per cent. “It is now a very bright gaming room and the changes we made make it more inviting and people can mix with other people but not be living on top of each other,” Mr Goldie said. To showcase the new gaming room, Kelly’s held a 50 per cent off meals night where people could come along for a cheap meal and see the newly designed area. It was through the extraordinary success of the night that the hotel was able to contribute funds to The ACE (Aiding Casey Education) Foundation. The hotel has a long history of supporting local schools in the area through donating money to assist parents and schools with students’ transitions from primary to secondary education.
“We’ve been doing the scholarship here for about 20 or 25 years and last year we have $50,000 to local schools and $50,000 again this year,” Mr Goldie said. “Last year or the year before, Leon and his band of merry men at ACE were looking at doing a similar thing and we thought it’s the same as ours but more involved into the genesis of why issues are there at basic level. “We thought why not funnel the money into that.” Kelly’s Hotel donated $4000 from the halfprice meals night at the hotel to ACE. Dr Leon Shapero, chair and managing director of ACE, said the money was a wonderful gift to receive from the hotel. “The ACE Foundation is both honoured and delighted to receive such a generous donation from Kelly’s Cranbourne,” he said. “The $4000 you have raised and donated will 100 per cent reach children in need within the City of Casey.” Dr Shapero said the money would go towards programs such a study facilities and free tutors for high school students, return to school program for young mothers, and encouragement awards to students. He said it would also help provide 2500 meal replacement drinks per month to high school students who attended school without having eaten breakfast, or who arrived without any lunch. “To Paul and co-owner Michael Goldie as well as to all your staff and to all who contributed, we say a massive thankyou,” Dr Shapero wrote. “We promise to ensure that your monies are properly appropriated and to guarantee as much as is humanly possible that each and every dollar reaches a deserving child.“

Health has fun By Casey Neill Dandenong Park will host a fun festival with health and well-being at its heart. Spring Into Wellness will mark both Mental Health Week and Carers Week with an animal farm, jumping castle, musicians, performers, art and craft activities, community service organisation stalls, and more. Mental health support service Ermha is presenting the free community event with South East Metropolitan Primary Health Network (SEMPHN) and Mind Australia. Bernard Robinson has been chipping in ideas and handing out posters, and will volunteer on the day. “I’ve been with Ermha for six years in different programs,“ he said. “For the last year, I’ve been a volunteer and it’s been really instrumental in my recovery.“ Mr Robinson said the event was a fun way to let the community know what support was available. “I know for myself it took me a long time to
accept that I had a mental illness because of the embarrassment and shame and all that,“ he said. “Until you take that first step and accept that you do have a mental illness, well you don’t really begin the road to recovery.“ Ermha’s Shamus Goble said the event would be fun, despite its serious message. “I’m looking forward to seeing how the members of the community interact with this event,“ he said. “Doing things for our general physical and mental well-being are important and to some degree provide, potentially, some protection against mental or physical illness.“ Mr Goble said the event was unique in that it would celebrate Mental Health Week and Carers Week simultaneously, and was taking place on a weekend. “There’s a lot of support services that aren’t usually available on weekends,“ he said. Spring Into Wellness will be held at Dandenong Park, Pultney Street, Dandenong, from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 16 October.
Nelly Yoa’s inspirational tale is about to hit small and big screens worldwide. The Dandenong man is the subject of the short film Offside. It is based on the story of how he narrowly survived, learned how to walk again and resumed his promising soccer career after an horrific machete attack at a Sudanese beauty pageant in 2011. The 15-minute film directed by Prashanth Raj re-enacts the events when his “dream” was nearly taken away. Its most powerful moment is an epilogue to camera by Mr Yoa urging people to build selfbelief. He said that the film shows people can come back whatever their adversity. “Hopefully this will motivate them to pursue their dream.” It is screening on You Tube, at Federation Square on 7 October and at Harmony Square, Dandenong, at a date which is yet to be fixed. Crowning his recovery, Mr Yoa has made this season’s reserve and youth squad of A-League club Melbourne City. He trains with the likes of Socceroo legend Tim Cahill. But the club has also recognised Mr Yoa’s ambassadorial qualities, employing him as a community officer running soccer clinics and connecting with young people. On his own voalition, he has taken on a mentoring role with members of the notorious Apex Gang. As he has told Star News in the past, his ap-
Nelly Yoa, as he appears in a poster for Offside proach is to urge disaffected youth to keep busy, stick at school, get a job and get involved in life. “Do something in the community. Not just their community but in the Caucasian community as well. “Act like an Aussie - that’s the only way the Sudanese name can be shown in a positive way.” Offside - The Real Nelly Yoa Story can be seen on YouTube and also on the Facebook page “Offside - short film”.

Cigarette raider is smoked out By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been jailed after being discovered with four bags filled with $2420 of cigarette lighters, cigarettes, phone chargers and assorted goods inside a Hampton Park shop after closing hours. Aaron Raymond Greenwood, 31, pleaded guilty to 54 charges including a litany of theft and deceptions at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October. Greenwood – who the court was told “had a serious drug habit” – had allegedly hid in an Uncle Buck’s store as it was locked up on 21 August. The court was told the accused allegedly collected $2420 of goods after staff had left the store. Greenwood then allegedly triggered a silent alarm when he broke into a next-door bottle shop through an adjoining roller door, Sgt Staples said. In the Bottle-O Splash Liquor store, Greenwood allegedly added $155 of cigarettes and a can of Red Bull to his haul. A bottle-shop staff member, alerted by the alarm, arrived at the store and confronted Greenwood – who then hid in Uncle Buck’s before his arrest by police. Greenwood, who said he used ice and GHB, was on bail at the time over other theft matters in June and July.
Some of those charges related to him allegedly using a stolen driver’s licence to test drive – and not return – two vehicles from separate car yards. He was also accused of using the stolen licence to attempt to take out a $5000 bank loan in Frankston, and to buy several iPhone 6S phones at various outlets. Greenwood also racked up about $2000 of sub-$100 purchases from stolen credit cards in a pre-dawn spending spree at servos and supermarkets in May. Greenwood’s lawyer conceded the accused’s offending had spiralled out of control while using GHB, prescription drugs and ice. However, his 43-day stint in remand custody – his first time in jail – was “sobering”, the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted Greenwood’s “volume” of offending, all after being put on a community corrections order in late April. “You could see the wheels were falling off.” Greenwood was sentenced to a further 47 days in jail and disqualified from driving for six months. His CCO was varied to a further 12 months after release, with drug, mental health and judicial monitoring.
Students act out for drama glory Maranatha Christian School has done it again. Students from the Endeavour Hills school beat strong competition to win the Christian Schools Event Network (CSEN) Cultural Drama Events competition for the second year in a row. With their thinking caps on, students had to devise a script and perform a play, almost on the spot. Maranatha’s senior team won the competition
by nine points. School principal William Jackson said that the Cultural Drama Events competition is an “amazing opportunity” for students. “Maranatha’s students have been a part of the program for the past two years,” Mr Jackson said. “It teaches them skills in acceptance, positivity towards members’ idea, facing their fears and storytelling.”

SPORT Club built on some good values “If we all stick together and put it in the hard yards, I’m sure we will be better off for it. “To the U19s, congratulations on winning the flag. “You must be on top of the world at the moment and I know it’s a great feeling and you should really savour it but bring that drive into the next pre- season." Martin also paid special mention to the support staff and volunteers of the club. "To all the support staff, the work that you do is really appreciated and I know it dosen’t seem like it a lot, but the players really do appreciate it. “To all the supporters, thankyou very much and hopefully next year will bring bigger and better things for us." Runner-up Best and Fairest: Vergim Faik Most Consistent: Ben Giobbi Most Determined: Ryan Morrison Best Finals Player: Tim Harper
By Nick Creely Passion, pride, resilience and determination are the core fundamentals of a successful and thriving football club. For the Noble Park Bulls, these four key ingredients are what make them such a proud club. For 32 long and agonising years, the Under 19s have been devoid of success - and finally they broke through spectacularly, claiming a gritty premiership against all odds. This feat was one of many stories to come out of the Peter Reece Medal awards night at Club Noble on Thursday 29 September. From their star midfielder Kyle Martin, who claimed yet another Peter Reece Medal, the retirements of club legends Stewart Kemperman and Craig Anderson, the touching tribute to club great Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan who passed away recently and the recognition of new life members, it was a night of celebration, pride and emotion for the blue and gold. The club has endured some tough years and have struggled to win premierships, but the energy, passion and overall love for the club was plain to see. Peter Reece Medal STAR midfielder Kyle Martin has yet again claimed the club Best and Fairest award, winning by 18 votes. The 26-year-old, who played six AFL games for Collingwood, is no stranger to individual accolades. He has not only won countless best and fairest awards at Noble Park, but he has also done so for Frankston in the VFL and for Collingwood’s VFL side. Martin first won the Peter Reece Medal back in 2009, at the age of 19, a remarkable achievement which raised the eyebrows of several recruiters. Now back at the club he grew up loving, the
Peter Reece with reigning club champion Kyle Martin. 160046 midfielder was all praise for the Bulls and believes ultimate success is certainly not far away. “It’s been a big year for the club and it’s great to see so many people here.
Picture: NICK CREELY
“To the players, obviously we didn’t get the end result that we wanted and as a team we strive to be the best and be the best team in the competition and unfortunately we fell short.
Rabbit’s journey marked by emotion from friends By Nicholas Creely Noble Park is saddened by the passing of ex-player and champion of the club Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan, 47, on 23 September, but the club honoured him in the best possible way with a touching tribute and a minute of silence at the club’s presentation night. Kellie Walden delivered a moving speech to the packed audience, talking about the journey of life and never taking things for granted. “Life is like one long continuous journey, and from the moment we get on board the train, we know we must depart. “We stop at many stations along the way, and sit and watch as different people enter our journey. “Many of these people sit on different carriages and we will never know them. “Others will sit on the same carriage but keep their distance. “A small percentage will sit next to us. “These are the passengers that bring great joy, and show us love, honesty and understanding. “We will treasure their company and hope they are getting off at the same stop as ourselves. “For we on the train without them would make our journey miserable. “Some people leave the train earlier than we would like, and as we pull out of the station they have departed, we can only look at the empty seat next to us. “We look out the window, remembering the conversations we shared, the love we endured and the thrill of being in each other’s company. “These memories are what we cling to and hold dear to our hearts. “At the next stop another person hops on, oblivious to the pain we are feeling. “We get to know this person and let them sit in their seat, not replacing them, but allowing us to share our memories of the previous passenger. “We continue our journey; being happier, richer and wiser from the people we have known,” an emotional Walden said.
Other Awards Cosi Anagnostou has taken out the David Spence Medal as the U19 best and fairest in a close count, while Ben Andonov and Mitch Anderson have tied for the Paul Brightman Medal as Reserves Best and Fairest. Anagnostou was thankful for the season, in which he kicked 11 goals from 17 matches and was a constant force in the midfield, and the help of his coaches in the breakthrough premiership. “Thankyou to Jamie for the year and you’ve been a really great coach,” Anagnostou said. “I’d like to also thank my mum who came down to all my games and thanks to all the boys for a really great year. Benjamin Andonov enjoyed a terrific season in the reserves for the Bulls, being named in the best virtually every single week and making his senior debut for the club this season, while Mitch Anderson enjoyed a breakout season, kicking almost a goal a game and also featuring at senior level on three occasions.

Tony 'Giggsy’ McGarrigle has been awarded for his outstanding contribution to the Noble Park Football Club, becoming one of the new Life Members of the club. McGarrigle has been a long-time servant of the football club and is highly respected by everyone associated with the Bulls. The club stalwart was honoured by his achievement, citing the club’s culture and ability to produce quality footballers as one of a kind. “It’s a great club to be a part of. “I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy some great success at this club. “I look at the people who have got life memberships before me and to now be one of them, it’s a great honour. I always wanted to win a best and fairest here and it takes one good year to do that but it takes a lot of good years to win this so I am really honoured,” McGarrigle said. Club legend Stewart Kemperman was also rewarded with life membership at the football club after a distinguished playing career at the Bulls. There were a number of other playing awards given on the night, while perpetual awards for outstanding contributions to the club were also given out. U19 premiership coach Jamie Barnett was awarded a certificate of congratulations from the City of Greater Dandenong by Cr Roz Blades, while Mick Moyle won the Kevin Meade (Players' Appreciation Award) and David Allan won the President’s Award for his outstanding service to the football club. 45 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 10 October, 2016

Last Man Stands for age By Nick Creely Social cricket is taking off in Australia, and Dandenong’s very own competitive team is making waves and creating opportunities for older cricketers. Last Man Stands is a social Twenty20 cricket competition, which is played by over 90,000 players worldwide. It was founded back in 2005 in London, and has grown legs in providing an easier way for eager cricketers who are passionate about the game to take part in competitive cricket. The competition is a modified version of Twenty20 cricket which has differing rules to conventional cricket, such as it features only eight players per side and requires the last batsman remaining to stay in until they are dismissed. The Dandenong competition will begin on 24 October at Greaves Reserve, Dandenong, which still has several spots available. Last Man Stands caters to participants 25 years and older, with an aim at appealing to cricketers who perhaps don’t have the time to commit to Saturday cricket and training. Last year’s Dandenong team, ‘The Greenbacks’, were a raging success, making it to the semi-final of the Champions League for Victoria’s best teams last summer. Although missing out on making the finals, the team will be aiming to go one step further this coming season. Winner of the Champions League will receive sponsored entry to the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast each year, with an eventual winner from that competition receiving prizemoney to go to the World Championships, which this season will be held in Cape Town, South Africa. Each year, this world championship is held in different countries, and The Greenbacks will be hoping it is their time to shine. If anyone is interested in taking part in this social cricket competition, visit www.lastmanstands.com or visit their Facebook page www. facebook.com/LastManStandsMelbourne.

Kemperman retires, with a little emotion to boot By Nick Creely Local football legend Stewart Kemperman officially announced his retirement from football in an emotional address at the Peter Reece Medal. Adding to this, the humble champion was awarded Life Membership, along with Tony McGarrigle at Noble Park in what was due recognition of his commitment and loyalty to his football club. Kemperman, 32, possesses a phenomenal playing career but will now take on a different challenge as senior coach of Berwick. The superstar half-back spent his junior career at Berwick, before playing with the Dandenong Stingrays, winning a premiership with Beaconsfield, before joining the Frankston Dolphins in the VFL for four years. Kemperman was best known as a tremendous kick of the football, as well as for strong football nous and elite fitness. In 2007 when Kemperman joined Noble Park, he made his name as a quality footballer and leader.

was grateful for the positive influence the club had had on his life. “I’ve been very fortunate to play at such a wonderful club and you look around the room and everyone you see is just such a great person. “Credit to everyone and the loyalty they have shown over the years and remaining true to the club. “Some of my best mates in life are from this club so I’m very thankful and I can’t explain my gratitude enough at the moment,” an emotional Kemperman said. Noble Park club legend Craig Anderson has also played his last game for the football club, in a career at the Bulls spanning over a decade. Anderson, who spent time on Collingwood’s rookie list, was a creative and line-breaking midfielder who played with soul and heart every time he stepped foot on the turf. The club will now have to more forward without the presence of two of their greatest champions, but are well equipped to move forward with the lessons they have brought to the club.
Great facing up to the end Every time a great of the game is farewelled, the past disconnects a little bit more from the present. Piece by piece, the on-court legacy of some of the most famous moments are what remains to drive the next generation into following the same path. Fans never want to think about the end - but it is inevitable. For WNBA legend Penny Taylor, her journey in basketball has come to an end. The last time she featured on the international stage was during the Rio Olympics - where she was farewelled out of basketball after the gut-wrenching loss to Serbia, but now her WNBA career has come to a close. During an expansive career, in which she played for Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL, Cleveland Rockers and her beloved Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, Taylor went on to become an iconic figure in women’s basketball in Australia. In her final WNBA finals campaign with Phoenix, Brittany Griner, Diana Taurasi, DeWanna Bonner drove the Mercury through for everything they had to extend Phoenix’s season, and with it prolong Taylor’s career. But sometimes a fairy-tale doesn’t need a perfect ending - falling to Minnesota in the best of five semi-final series. All Taylor ever wanted was to bring home the championships for her fans. For one last time in the famous orangeand-purple Phoenix jersey, she sat at her final press conference and thanked the WNBA and the world for what they’ve given her. “Right now I’m just really disappointed about this game and this series obviously,” Taylor said. “You never want to go out on a loss and I think when I could walk again and look back, I’ll be very proud of my career and everything I’ve achieved. “All that’s ever mattered to me was winning and I’ve been able to do it a few times here and I’ll never forget those teams and that feeling. “I’ll always be proud of that and I feel great that I get to carry those wins with me. “It’s a real comfort to me that all that ever did matter to me was winning and I was able to do that. “I’m just going to enjoy doing nothing and see how long that lasts. “I’ve got a feeling that won’t be very long. “I started professionally at roughly 16 so that’s a good stretch - I’ve loved every minute of it. I probably know basketball better than anything else - it’s something I love, it’s in my blood and I can see definitely doing something with basketball in the future."
Handling the pressure and still getting the glory By Nick Creely When success eludes a team for so long, it makes clubs question themselves and puts pressure on the next batch coming through to deliver glory. Premiership droughts are testing times for football clubs, and only the strongest clubs can break through the barrier when the pressure ramps up. For the Noble Park U19s, who had endured 32 long years in the premiership wilderness before finally breaking through against Vermont, the selfbelief and confidence within was unwavering. In a low scoring affair, the U19s prevailed by 22 points over Vermont, and in the process achieving a feat the club always knew was around the corner. Life member David Spence, who the Best and Fairest award is named after, was thrilled for the club and its achievements this season. 46 JOURNAL NEWS Monday, 10 October, 2016
“I would just like to really congratulate the guys. “This club, Noble Park, really is an exceptional club." Cr Roz Blades of the City of Greater Dandenong, who was on hand to deliver the coach a certificate of congratulations for the outstanding achievement at the Peter Reece Medal, recognised the achievement and the club’s journey to win the flag. “I’ve got a certificate of recognition for the coach of the Noble Park Football Club U19s. “This awards is to do with the players, coaches, parents that claimed a very significant premiership for Noble Park. “Congratulations to them on behalf of the City of Greater Dandenong,” Blades said. People within the football club remarked on the night how highly they rate coach Jamie Barnett and talked about how he has been a positive influence on the young footballers.
Captain of the U19s victory, Alex Aiello, echoed these remarks, and thanked everyone from the support staff, coaches to parents for all their hard work throughout the year. “Just on behalf of all the U19s, we thank you for your contribution and hard work in helping us get this premiership,” Aiello said. “Jamie, you’ve especially had a fantastic year coaching the boys,” “Thankyou very much for all your help and the boys really do appreciate it. The biggest highlight of the night however, was the entire U19s premiership side on stage singing the club song with gusto and passion, proudly showing off their silverware in front of their fans. The spirit never really left the Bulls, all it took was one premiership to re-discover why this club has been so highly successful over the last 30 years. Perhaps this premiership is the kick-started for a dynasty of success for the Noble Park U19s.

Ally is no lone Ranger
Man's Night to help the kids
By Nicholas Creely The basketball world has continued to expand for Ally Malott, who touched down in Melbourne last week ahead of her WNBL debut season with the Dandenong Jayco Rangers. From humble roots in Madison Township, Ohio, Malott, 23, has constantly pushed her basketball boundaries. First to college at the University of Dayton where she helped the Flyers into the Elite Eight in 2015 ... before she moved up to DC after she was drafted by the Washington Mystics WNBA team. But it’s her latest relocation that has her head spinning - a move halfway around the world to keep her skills sharp in the upcoming WNBL season. “I’ve always wanted to visit Australia and last year (abroad) I didn’t have the best experience, so I was kind of looking for somewhere I’d enjoy playing and enjoy my team-mates, coaches and the city,” Malott said. “I heard a lot of great things about Melbourne, so when coach called me when we were talking it seemed like there were a lot of positive things about the team and I could see myself playing for them ... so it didn’t take me very long. “Everything that I’ve heard - from players who have played here in previous years - they have nothing but nice things to say about the league and this team - so I think I’m ready for some competitive games and to get better as a team.” Malott remains amazed she gets these chances to pursue a professional life in basketball after the successes she had throughout her time as a Flyer. “It was a big adjustment - the professional game, it wasn’t something that I knew I was going to do, after four years of college I didn’t think that was something I would do, but when it came to light it was exciting and it’s a big blessing to be able to keep playing for my job,” Malott said. “My senior year of college we went to the elite eight and I’m from a smaller school and it taught me the lesson that if everyone believes in each other and believes in the process and what the coaches are saying ... you don’t have to be a big dog necessarily to get success. “That was probably the biggest highlight so far, but obviously it’s a privilege to play in the WNBA and now as well in the WNBL and I’m looking forward to what happens this season.” Malott’s been working on her outside game and perfecting the three-spot. “This past season they (Washington) moved me to the three and it was kind of an adjustment from picking and popping and being under the basket to being on the perimeter - so I’ve been working a lot at my quickness and trying to guard smaller people,” Malott said. Rangers coach Larissa Anderson was thrilled to find someone of Malott’s caliber available for this year’s WNBL campaign. “She’s really excited about being in Australia and we have signed a fantastic player who possibly wouldn’t be available and now we have someone who is keen,” Anderson said. “Everyone knows we’re without Bunts and Annalise from last year and they settled in beautifully, but we’re really excited to have Ally come in,” Anderson said.

Rangers recruit Ally Malott is ready to go. “With Nat (Novosel) in the line-up, we decided to go with one extra big and Ally suits that well. “She has a good inside-outside game, goes perfectly with the rest of our line-up - which is extremely versatile. “That allows us to go a lot of different combinations and Ally complements that nicely - as we
Picture: SUPPLIED could play her anywhere from the three to the five. “In the WNBA they’re trying to change her into three-man, so she’s had 12 months of great experience of playing and defending the threespot. “So she’s a fantastic three-point shooter as well as another big for us.”
Over $25,000 was raised for local community groups at Sandown Park’s annual ‘Man’s Night’ on 29 September. More than 1500 people packed the View Road circuit for the Grand Final public holiday eve race meeting, including more than 600 diners. In addition to an exciting night of greyhound racing, patrons enjoyed a series of games and activities including racing simulators, darts, table pool, basketball, air hockey, pinball and a bucking bull. Gold coin donations and tin rattling raised several thousand dollars for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, which was later topped up to $10,000 by the club. The PCFA was also a beneficiary of the success of the on-course Punters Club. Despite a number of roughies saluting on the night (no favourites won and half of all winners paid $10 or more), Punters Club host punter Troy Little managed to return $50 for a $20 outlay. That payout was rounded down, with the difference seeing more than $1200 of Punters Club winnings donated to the PCFA, a decision that proved very popular among the winning punters. Adding to the AFL Grand Final flavour of the night, half of all patrons won a $10 mystery bet after Felton Bale won race eight, while decked in the Sydney Swans colours. There was $10,000 up for grabs in the final of the popular Club Challenge series. Media personality and ex-footballer Rex Hunt hosted a series of keenly contested games and competitions - including a pie eating competition - with Ashwood Football Netball Club emerging victorious to collect the $5000 winner's cheque. The Moorabbin Kangaroos finished second and pocketed $3000, while Lilydale Bowling Club and Scoresby Football Club tied for third and won $1000 each. Meanwhile, the Noble Park and Springvale City Rotary Clubs held a fund-raising function in support of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The Rotarians raised $6000 for the library, which aims to improve childhood literacy for children by giving them a free, high quality age-appropriate book each month from birth to age 5. The night also marked 50 days until the world’s richest greyhound race, the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup which will be run on Friday 18 November. Limited dining is still available for greyhound racing’s night of nights, visit www.superdogs. com.au for details.
