Power outage By Jesse Graham POWERFUL winds wreaked havoc in the Yarra Valley over the weekend, uprooting trees, knocking out power lines and injuring residents. Winds of up to 120km/h lashed the state on Sunday 9 October, causing widespread damage to houses and power lines, leaving thousands of homes without power. A Millgrove woman, 56, was killed when a tree fell on her property in Adrienne Court - emergency services members attended the scene, but could not revive her. Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Cliff Argus said the winds were some of the worst he had seen in the area, and that officers were working overtime to help clear fallen trees from roads. “We attended dozens of calls in relation to trees and power lines down, blocking roads and causing damage,” he said. “Fortunately for us, nothing involving any people or injuries, so that was good.” He said areas such as the Black Spur and Myers Creek Road had been cut off because of falling trees, with the spur not expected to open until Monday evening. Other roads, including the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road, were impacted by falling trees. In the Upper Yarra area, a police car was destroyed by a falling tree when emergency services were called out to help rescue three people in Don Valley. Warburton police Leading Senior Constable Tony Pagels said that at 3.30pm, a falling tree injured three people who were working to clear debris on Don Road. While police and SES were at the scene, a tree fell on a nearby car and a police car, damaging both vehicles.
An example of Sunday’s storm damage, on Settlement Road in Yarra Junction. 160397 One of the injured was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, while the other two were taken to hospital later. In Badger Creek, a woman in her nineties was taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition after her roof collapsed about 9.20am. On Monday morning, power remained out in many areas of the Yarra Valley and surrounds. AusNet Services’ Corporate Relations representative Hugo Armstrong said the Yarra Valley and Dandenong
Ranges were the worst affected parts of the state from the storm. Mr Armstrong said crews had been working through the night to restore power to Woori Yallock and Belgrave’s substations, but that power was not likely to be restored to all affected properties until Tuesday night. Of the 38,062 properties without power by 2pm on Monday 10 October, Mr Armstrong said the majority were in the area between Kinglake and Pakenham. “As always, the combination of

higher land, lots of trees and a large number of people means that significant parts of the Upper Yarra Valley have been off supply since yesterday lunchtime and remain off supply,” Mr Armstrong said. “The short answer is we got very large amounts of trees across lines and network damage yesterday afternoon, and more issues have continued to come to light since then.” Though he encouraged residents to make AusNet aware of fallen power lines, Mr Armstrong said residents should not call to get an estimate of
when their power would return, as they were likely to get stuck in a call queue and not get a precise answer. “We can’t give time estimates,” Mr Armstrong said. Mr Armstrong said that, with many properties not having access to power for more than 24 hours, residents should consider relocating, if possible, to somewhere with power. He also urged residents to be aware of elderly or vulnerable neighbours who may also be without power and to check on their welfare.

GARDEN enthusiasts are being called on to see what’s behind the hedges at one of Healesville’s historic properties, with Graceburn Gardens (formerly named Congleton) opening its gates on Saturday. From 10am to 4pm on Saturday 15 October, the gardens at 454 Maroondah Highway, Healesville, will be open to the public as part of a fundraiser for Gillian’s Rainbow Bridge. Organised by resident Margaret Allard, the $5 door price will be donated to the Rainbow Bridge, an organisation that rehabilitates animals and runs children’s programs. Ms Allard said she came up with the idea after visiting the Rainbow Bridge’s gardens, and got in touch with the gardens’ and organisation’s representatives from there. Graceburn Gardens owner Christine Shiel said the property was celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and that the hedge was just as old. She said that she had been at the property for three years, working to restore it and its gardens to their former glory. “We’re aiming to reclaim the original design,” she said. “I would say it’s a cottage garden it’s in the arts-and-crafts style.” Ms Shiel said it was a “landmark property”, with “rainforest-sized” plants that were about 70 years old. She said many passers-by had a keen interest in the property and what was behind the hedges, so much so that visitors sometimes stopped by to see. “For us, it’s an opportunity to show people ... what’s behind the hedge,” she said. A plant sale will also be held on the day.
The historic garden is being restored, and will be open to the public this weekend. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Schools tapped in By Jodie Symonds MORE than 100 people attended the official opening of the Bushfire Education Centre in Marysville on Saturday 8 October. The centre was designed to be a resource for schools, to match their geography curriculum. President of the Bushfire Education Foundation, Barry Thomas, said the event went well. “The response was good - some people found it very confronting, but others were able to spend an amount of time there,” Mr Thomas said. “Everybody left with a positive feeling toward it, though.” The event included a guided tour of a nearby local resident’s garden to view its recovery. Pans on Fire steelband, who
formed in the aftermath of the Black Saturday Bushfires, played throughout the day. Mr Thomas said the centre was currently only open to schools, but would be opened to the public at a later date. “I think it will really benefit the public about how to better prepare for the bushfire season,” he said. “It will allow them to better understand. “Hopefully, it will prepare people, so they won’t make last-minute decisions on the day.” Numerous schools have visited the site, learned about bushfires as part of hazards and disasters studies. The communities of Kinglake, Flowerdale and Strathewen all contributed to the education centre. For more information, visit www.bef.net.au
A 42-YEAR-OLD Lilydale man was arrested shortly after noon on Tuesday 4 October for causing damage to students’ cars parked outside of Mount Lilydale Mercy College. Police observed the man was allegedly placing tyre spikes in gutters to cause further damage to students’ tyres. Lilydale police arrested and charged the man with two counts of criminal damage. A number of reports were received, spanning over a few months, Lilydale police confirmed. Deputy principal of Mount Lilydale Mercy College, Michael Johnston, said it was obvious from the outset, that the damage was not just a handful of nails. “The spikes were about the size of 4 inch nails and positioned in such a manner that they would pierce the tyre,” Mr Johnston said. “As a school, we were concerned about the safety of our students, especially as they are novice drivers. “As Year 12 exams are about to commence, it is a relief to have this issue resolved. Students do not need any additional pressure or stress as they prepare for this exam period.” The man will appear at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Drugs, weapons charges A LILYDALE man and a Yarra Junction woman were charged about midnight on Wednesday 5 October for drug and weapon offences. The 23-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were observed by police loitering in David Drive, in Lilydale. Lilydale police confirmed that a knife was located on the male, and drugs and a knife were located on the female. Both will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
Disoriented man hospitalised MOOROOLBARK police located a disorientated man, aged 23, running through the main street of Lilydale, about 5.30pm on Wednesday 5 October. Police observed the man, who they believe is of no fixed address, running down John Street in Lilydale, towards Anderson Street. About five calls were made to police regarding the actions of the man after he was seen near Lilydale Lake, Maroondah Highway, John Street and Anderson Street. Mooroolbark police told the Mail they believed the man may have been drug-affected and was in “some sort of state of psychosis”. An ambulance was called, with the man taken to Maroondah Hospital. Police investigations will continue, though no charges have been laid.

By Jodie Symonds STICKERS have been distributed throughout the Yarra Ranges to encourage those going through tough times, to seek help instead of feeling isolated. The Need to Chat sticker campaign was developed as part of Mental Health Week on 9 to 15 October, by Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Reference Group. The campaign aims to tackle, and raise awareness for depression and anxiety, two of the top issues facing young people across Australia today. Stickers will appear in various locations including: Mooroolbark, Yarra Junction, Healesville, Belgrave and in languages such as English, Chin Haka, Chin Zomi and Karen. Reference group member Tiffany Kuiper, of Lilydale, said the campaign also let people know that if they were feeling down, not to be ashamed. “There is a lot of stigma around mental illness, and we hope these stickers will help people feel more at ease,” Ms Kuiper said. The sticker depicts a young person stuck in a black hole, showing that there is a way out no matter how alone some people may feel. Group member Genna Stott, of Wantirna, said the group want-

ed to develop a campaign other young people could identify with. “The group brainstormed what it felt like to be dealing with these complicated thoughts, and it was clear that everyone shared the same feelings, so we wanted to translate it into our campaign,” Ms Stott said. “Everyone feels these feelings differently, but being stuck in a black hole was something we could all agree on.
“I hope these stickers encourage young people to seek help if they need it, because I have seen through this group there are people out there to help.” The sticker encourages young people to use resources through the council’s website. Thomas has a rest - but he’ll be back for kids By Peter Douglas THE Kids Fun Run with Thomas Engine event has been postponed due to flooding around the Gembrook Station. Event co-ordinators have said, sadly, Thomas doesn’t have any flippers or a snorkel and he doesn’t want any of his friends to fall over, get wet or muddy. They have assured those who have already registered that their registration will be automatically transferred to a new date once it is known. The event had been sched-
uled to be held on Sunday, 9 October, where children aged between 3 and 12 could have raced the iconic locomotive. A new date is expected to be announced shortly. The fun will include the run for kids, showbags for runners, train rides on Thomas, market stalls, a petting zoo, jumping castles, a Thomas hunt, food and more. As well as being a great day, the event is also an annual fundraiser organised by the Rotary Club of Emerald and District. This year, registration fees
go towards helping to support the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre (CPEC), which is the only centre of its kind in Australia that specialises in supporting children with cerebral palsy. Meanwhile, Victoria SES is reminding residents in the Yarra Ranges to remain vigilant as minor flooding continues to hit the region, warning river levels may reach the tops of banks or flow over into low-lying areas. They also warn local roads may be closed and low bridges may be underwater.

Street art adorns saloon A MELBOURNE-BASED street artist has brought funky street art to businesses in the Yarra Valley. Wandin North's Imperial Edge Hair owner Nadine Amy saw Mikey ‘Mikey xxi’ Newman doing street art inside the newly opened burger venue, Hello Harry, in Lilydale last month. She said she decided automatically to get him paint the inside of her salon, which had been left blank for the past four years. Mr Newman completed work on two walls within the salon and
the wall outside, opposite the car park. Ms Amy said she had always had an appreciation for street art. “I wanted to bring something funky to the Yarra Valley and something just a little different from the normal. “I love the vibe it’s brought to the salon and people keep commenting on it. “It has created some great conversation within the salon. Mr Newman said Ms Amy had an idea for the design, and then let him “go wild with the rest.
“I wanted the hair to be really expressive and colourful, he said. “The salon had a lot of reds and greys, so I wanted to keep those warm funky colours. It took Mr Newman a day to complete the inside artwork, and another for the outside work. He believes in creating work that doesn’t involve violence or scaring children. “It’s not my style - I don’t want to paint anything that scares children, Mr Newman said. “You can put a lot of attitude into your work without it being offensive.

SEVERAL alarming incidents over the past week have occurred as crime statistics in the Yarra Ranges showed an overall increase of 24 per cent over the 2016 financial year. Over this period, Crime Statistics Victoria revealed there had been 8803 offences in the Yarra Ranges local government area, up from 7089 in the 2015 financial year, with increases in all major offence divisions. This included drug offences (up 28.7 per cent), property and deception offences (+ 15.4 per cent), and public order and security offences (plus 33.3 per cent). One of the more alarming individual trends was an increase in offences of arson, with 135 cases, an increase of 77.6 per cent. The statistics were released after a spate of disturbing cases in the Yarra Ranges. These included a Lilydale man, 23, and a woman, 22, who were charged at midnight on Wednesday, 5 October, over the possession of drugs and knives. Also, a Lilydale man, 42, was arrested shortly after
12am on Tuesday, 4 October, for causing damage to students’ cars parked outside of Mount Lilydale Mercy College. Meanwhile, Mooroolbark police located a disorientated man, 23, running naked through the main street of Lilydale, about 5.30pm, on Wednesday 5 October. State Member for Eastern Victoria Region, and Shadow Victoria Police Minister, Ed O’Donohue, said there were not enough first-response police officers available. “The Yarra Ranges has seen a 24 per cent jump in crime, while police numbers have been slashed by almost five per cent, Mr O’Donohue said. “(Victorian Premier) Daniel Andrews needs to give police the resources needed to re-open all the police stations that have been forced to cut their hours and put more police on the streets. “That means fewer police to attend urgent call-outs for home invasions, carjackings and family violence. Meanwhile, State Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish, said Victorians were getting sick and tired of waking to yet another story

ta Willaton, said the service would give locals the opportunity to use numerous new, emerging technologies. “The introduction of the NBN in Warburton marks the beginning of a new, brilliantly connected era for locals,” she said.
Pages from the past Healesville Guardian 10 October 1936 Nudist Colony for Healesville? ACCORDING to Cr Mowle at the last council meeting, he claimed to have seen locals in the nearest thing to nude on the stage in our own hall - with only a little pants on! A public meeting had been convened by the shire president to discuss the storming of the town at Christmas by 1000 members of the Workers Sports Federation who purpose going under canvas at Lake Yumbunga for 10 days and signalising New Year’s Day by a mammoth sports carnival in Queen’s Park. Cr Mowle has been in touch - not with the nudes of course but with the organising representatives of the visiting organisation. Not only will there be 1000 members, but their friends and their friend’s friends and money will be spent like water! First a camping site had to be chosen and it rested between Christie’s paddock and Lake Yumbunga, the latter finally getting the vote. Two special trains will be bringing the guests. There was to be a big sports meeting on the oval on New Year’s Day with the district co-operating and sharing in the proceeds on a fiftyfifty basis.
In Case You Didn’t Know THE Royal Blind Entertainers will make their annual visit to the Memorial Hall on Wednesday 21 October. A bright night of music and laughter is promised, the company included Jack Stewart (comedian), Pauline Just (soprano and whistler), J.H. Croker (tenor and instrumentalist), Ern Pike (comic), Les Barry (baritone), Charles Bennett (pianist) and the Royal Jazz Orchestra. Local arrangements are in the hands of Mr Bradshaw. Our local poultry men Messrs Mumford and Cornish were again among the prize winners at the Royal Show. It was very creditable that four prize cards came to Healesville out of a total entry of 161 birds in the section in which they were competing. Mr Cornish’s prize cockerel attracted much attention and was sold at the show. Upper Yarra Mail TOURISM Report recommends name change. Where is the Upper Yarra Valley? The Shire of Upper Yarra has received a report on tourism which recommends the valley be renamed the Warburton Valley. Major issues that the report says need to be addressed include: A lack of customers for businesses in

· A lack of awareness by customers and · · · ·
the tourism industry of the Yarra Valley and its many attractions. Development of product to increase appeal to visitors from various markets. Promotion of eco-tourism attractions and tours should be given stronger prominence. Warburton townscape and streetscape schemes should be expedited. Far greater prominence to be given to the area’s history.
Yarra Junction Best and Fairest YARRA Junction’s best-and-fairest winner is Joe Cochrane and runner-up Dale Adams. Joe has now won two best-andfairest awards and one runner-up. COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2016 - YARRA RANGES
Dave Hill.
Fiona McAllister.
Jim Child.
Chelsea McNab.
DAVE HILL Healesville Ryrie Ward Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? I bring experience that’s been absent. It’s a natural progression from being an honorary Public Service Board Victoria member, tribunal member, to being a director of our local Community Bendigo Bank. I will advocate for our Ryrie Ward. What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? Rates this year were set at the maximum increase allowable. Resolve our long standing aquatic issues; Continue the upgrading of local health services; Working with sporting and community groups and Supporting individuals and local businesses in crisis with council. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? As a toddler, the Healesville pool was first pool I swam in. When I started work the Coldstream airfield, I had my first solo fight and for almost the last 30 years, Healesville is my choice that I call home. Today, my community asks me to stand for council.
FIONA MCALLISTER Chum Creek Ryrie Ward Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? To continue to represent our great Yarra Valley community to get the best council we can have. Personally, I love advocating for our community and contributing. What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? Competence, good governance, proper community consultation, budget control and the Yarra Valley getting its fair share of the rates take. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? My experience as Ryrie Ward councillor for the last four years is invaluable. I have established good working relationships with the major community groups. I have a good track record of campaigning for community facilities and achieving good results. I respect the community’s diverse opinions and will never be a mouthpiece for council management.
JIM CHILD Wesburn O’Shannassy Ward Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? I am extremely proud and honoured to have led (Mayor 2012- 2013) and been part of the new council elected in 2012, a council that has achieved so much, financial stability, strong capital works achievements and setting this year the lowest ever percentage (2.5 per cet) rate rise in the history of the Yarra Ranges Council. I want to continue this great work and be a part of the next proactive council. What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? *To see to fruition the Warburton Mountain Bike Hub, Yarra Valley Trail and making the Upper Yarra a truly wonderful nature-based tourism destination with jobs for all. Including existing industries; * Planning reform, making it easier for residents and businesses to achieve their goals and * To stay focused on Local Government issues and providing quality services and infrastructure to our communities with minimal rate increases. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? My commitment and proven record of being the resident’s full time O’Shannassy Ward councillor. Always available, approachable and totally committed, with a proven record to get things done. A proven record of strong community representation.
CHELSEA MCNAB Mt Toolebewong O’Shannassy Ward Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? I’m running to be a councillor as I’d like to support small business, arts and our local food producers to connect. I believe connected communities are healthy communities. I’d like to see the growth of nature-based tourism in the valley. I feel that I can make a difference. I also know that I will enjoy this sort of role in our community. What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? In this election, I would like to bring the state of our local environment to the table. This includes the issues of rubbish dumping, the lack of public transport services, logging issues, I would like to work on where and how our rates are spent. Address homelessness in the valley, and also I’d like to explore where and how we can better our community cohesiveness, hopefully we can tackle some issues such as family violence and drug use. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? I care about this region. I’m a hard worker and will do my best to represent community concerns and work hard to find solutions.

COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2016 - YARRA RANGES
TONY STEVENSON DR GEOFF PAIN CHANDLER Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? I am committed to ensuring Yarra Ranges remains a fantastic place to live, work and play. I have the time and energy to work hard to protect our natural beauty and way of living, strengthen our communities and push council to deliver better services and value for money.
What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?
CHANDLER Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council?
SUE MCMURDIE
A ratepayer in the area for 33 years, I now have the time and energy to devote to representing my fellow citizens. I was prompted by the wasteful 5:4 decision to spend $28 million on refurbishment of the council office, and if elected will try to reverse it.
What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election?
Why should your ward’s residents vote for you?
We need more local government action on sustainability, global overheating, poverty, homelessness, disengaged vulnerable youth, jobs, feral pests, threatened species protection, aged care, ambulance, bus transport, dental and medical services, better footpaths and nature trails, lower and fairer rates, encouragement for small business, more recycling and lower tip charges.
My promise is simple: I will be an active, hard working, independent and committed voice for you. I have 20 years of senior management experience in an ASX200 company. I have the skills and experience to work with everyone in the community and all parts of council.
Living in Chandler Ward, have visited all 420 streets, available seven days per week for community. Political experience will help us get a fair go for Chandler and the shire from State and Federal governments.
The biggest issue is ensuring council delivers a fair go for ALL the diverse communities right across Chandler Ward. You can’t play favourites. Council must be more consultative and transparent, and be focused on delivering the necessary services cost-effectively. An effective council will keep downward pressure on rates.
Why should your ward’s residents vote for you?
CHANDLER Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? Running for a position on council is a natural progression of my long community involvement. I have the ability to actively represent, not just the residents of Chandler Ward, but also residents across the Yarra Ranges shire.
What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? The most important issue for me is “Community First“. The need for a local councillor who will be accessible, available and responsive to all residents, advocating strongly for all sections of the community.
Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? A vote for Sue McMurdie will elect a strong, compassionate and caring women that will work well as part of a team of councillors doing the very best for all residents. I have the energy, passion and the time to do the job.
MARIA MCCARTHY TIM HEENAN BILLANOOK Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? I retain the passion from when I was councillor for seven years. I believe there is so much more I can do for the Lilydale and Mount Evelyn communities.
What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? Stopping the waste of $28 million on the shire offices; Have a review of why rates are so high; Review how the council spend your money; and Better upkeep of roads and assets. Why should your ward’s residents vote for you?
· · · ·
They need a community person who speaks their language and has the commitment to stand up to the bureaucracy in the council. I have proven my value before, and will do so again.
ANDREW HENLEY BILLANOOK Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? I am a local resident who is concerned about the impact of political donations on our democracy. I am standing for a more transparent and accountable council.
What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? Ensuring that council funds are used efficiently to ensure that support services and council facilities always improve. We should be able to enjoy the lifestyle that attracted us to this great municipality without suffering constant rate rises.
Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? I am a young father who understands the importance of council services to families in the Yarra Ranges. I am determined to see a change from the “business as usual“ approach of our old councillors.
BILLANOOK Why are you running to be a councillor on Yarra Ranges Council? As the current, first time councillor, I learnt a new term, “The Bell Curve” of learning. I have discovered over the last four years that my ‘Bell Curve’ is still curving up as there has been so much to learn in Local Government. Hence, I would like to do another term to now put into practice what I have learnt over the last four years.
What issues are most important to you, in terms of this election? The issues that are most important for me in this election is that the boundary lines have changed for Billanook. If I am successful at becoming re-elected, my issue will be to maintain and build my relationships with all the volunteer community groups and residents who now fall under Billanook Ward.
Why should your ward’s residents vote for you? I will continue to focus on lowering costs and delivering services. I will effectively advocate addressing issues that are raised with me.

Agro products and services UNDER the enthusiastic guidance of newly appointed president, William Anker, the organising committee of the Wandin-Silvan Field Days is busily planning and preparing this year’s event, in anticipation of building upon past successes. Now in its 47th year, they look forward to welcoming exhibitors and visitors from across the country to this significant local community event. The Wandin-Silvan Field Days continues as a not-for-profit organisation, operated and run by a committee of local volunteers, some of whom have a history of involvement, dating back to the first event. The Field Days foster community involvement, with local schools and community groups providing catering and other services as their major fundraising opportunity. The 2016 Wandin-Silvan Field Days will again provide an opportunity for exhibitors to present a diverse range of horticultural, agricultural and lifestyle products and services; as well as information and demonstrations, directly to patrons. They actively encourage the participation of relevant exhibitors who are able to support our theme. From general farm machinery, light industrial equipment, motor vehicles and motor bikes through to irrigation equipment, water tanks, pest and weed control, fertilisers, chemicals, and fruit packaging and labelling ... the opportunities are endless! Of particular note this year: Students from Mount Lilydale Mercy College’s young farmers club will
There is plenty to see and do for all guests at the field days. 160357 showcase their skills, demonstrating a range of fencing equipment from Rural Fence and Trade. The students will also be running a pet show on the Saturday, which is open for children under the age of 18 to enter their own animal. Animals will feature strongly this year - with pony rides for the children, and displays of Galloway cattle - along with therapy chickens in aged care/ child care. Black Snake Productions - featuring an educational and informative inter-active display and talks from their snake pit - with Taipans, brown snakes,
tiger snakes, death adders, pythons, lizards, a croc and more on show in the snake pit; with reptiles to handle for the public between talks. Mad Max has grunt to burn MAD Max, the twin supercharged burn-out machine, will make a rare appearance at the Wandin Silvan Field Days this year. The V12 Detroit engine was taken out of a massive tugboat and used initially as a dynotester. Mad Max’s creator, Peter Humphris, decided the beast of a machine would make a formidable burn-out vehicle. So, inspired by the 1980s movie with Mel Gibson, Peter designed a simple, yet incredibly tough machine that would withstand any conditions and do one of the biggest burn-outs known to mankind. Mad Max will be part of the 600 Engineering display at the Field Days and kids can have their photo taken while sitting on the death-defying machine. They can experience the excitement when its earth-shaking V-12 engine starts revving.

Wired up with all your needs RURAL Fence and Trade started trading in the Yarra Valley in January 2010. In 2011, they moved to their Coldstream location and have been distributing quality farm fencing and rural products out of this branch for more than five years. With product demand, comes growth. So, Rural Fence and Trade Whittlesea opened in May 2016. Shaun Halit (owner) is aware the ingredient to a successful business is to have the best staff. Their staff has many years’ experience and listens to your needs. Secondly, it’s imperative to offer a quality product at a competitive price. Shaun understands that there is no use telling “good” fencing contractors and serious farmers what they need; they understand the industry and the proof is clearly in the price, service and the quality. Shaun is aware that landowners embrace being introduced to new and evolving ranges of fencing product. The team is aware that after a big day on the tools, a quality product creates piece of mind. Shaun and the team say the branches at Coldstream and Whittlesea are all about supporting land and acreage owners. They welcome a visit to discuss your needs and showcase the quality of their product. It’s an Aussie made fence with a top-class, world-renowned wire. Their doors are wide open for hobby farmers, equine enthusiasts and - if

From left are Jarrad (Whittlesea manager), Shaun, Mei Larn, Peter (Coldstream manager) and Damien. 160359 you need a good honest fencing contractor - they can refer the best in the Valley. Shaun says that when looking for a
good farm fence contractor, you need to be careful. “Your fence contractor is like your mechanic - once you have found a
good one, keep him,” he said. “Finding the good one is easy, call us and we will create the introduction to the best contractors that you can rely
on for years to come.” Their product range varies, albeit the heart beats around rural fencing items. Heavy black steel posts, hot dipped gal posts, pine posts, hinge joint and ringlock fence wire, plain wire, barb wire, farm gates, horse gates, hard wood rails, horse wire, fencing tools, and electric fencing is stocked up and ready to go. They specialise in equine fencing options. Both locations offer exceptional freight rates to anywhere in Victoria, or you can drive in and pick up. Find them at this year’s Wandin Silvan field days. Previously, they have won best stand award during three of their fours. If you want to save a buck, make sure you visit their stand at site HH. 'TIS THE SEASON FOR SELLING
Geoff White CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria
THE market is on the move with more homes traditionally going to sale in spring. And with solid prices in many areas of the state this year - and warmer weather on the way - now is a good time to list your home. The first step in the sale process is to select the right agent, which requires careful consideration. The reputation of the agent is one of the most important factors. A well regarded agent will be knowledgeable in your local area and may even know potential buyers who have missed out on previous properties. Your agent will be able to advise you on the benefits of different sales methods, the best way to
advertise your property, and perhaps improvements to maximise your selling price. A well presented home says “welcome“. It doesn’t have to be a “show place“ but it should appear a comfortable home in which to live. Your home will be one of many on the market - particularly in spring and in order to achieve the best price within a set time, your home should appeal to as many potential buyers as possible. Experience shows that vendors who make an extra effort on presentation usually achieve a quicker sale and sometimes, a higher price. First impressions do count, so
ensure the overall view of your home including the yard, fences and roof appear neat and tidy from the street. Small improvements can make a big difference so clear the gutters, clean windows, screens, doors and awnings. Sweep driveways and patios, spreading gravel on unsealed driveways and lay pine bark on unsightly surfaces. If you have a garden, it’s a good idea to trim shrubs and mow lawns, including the footpath. Outdoor furniture can also be arranged to give your home the appearance of comfort and leisure. Fright night on ghost train By Derek Schlennstedt IT'S fright night aboard the Yarra Valley Railway Ghost Train this Halloween. To celebrate the holiday, Yarra Valley Railway is calling all ghouls, goblins and ghosts to join them for a frightening journey through the Yarra Valley. Dress up in your best Halloween frocks and experience a night of laughs, scares and more in a show that is truly one of a kind. The night begins as soon as you step onto the railway platform with a haunted house sure to frighten before even boarding the train. “From when you get on the train to when you get off there’s always something spooky happening,” says Brett Morton, president of the Yarra Valley Railway. Running from Healesville to Tarrawarra winery, the round trip takes 45 minutes, but you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled as there’s sure to be some interesting sights along the way, promises Brett. “It doesn’t just take place on the train, there’s also spooky things happening outside all along the ride,” he says.
With interactive roaming characters surprising those on the train and on the platform, the night is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Promising nervous laughter, entertainment and fun, Brett says it’s a great way to celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year. “It’s really entertaining and a lot of fun, there’s dress ups, a few frights and some spooky happenings-it’s a great time,” he said. To get into the spirit Yarra Valley Railway Refreshments cafe will be open all night running a day of the dead themed Mexican pop up cantina serving Mexican style dishes. Shows will run on Friday 28 October from 8pm until midnight and on Saturday 29 October from 6pm until midnight. (On Saturday, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm trains will run in daylight for younger passengers with the 8pm train taking place during dusk.) To book tickets, call Yarra Valley Railway Ghost Train on 0425 750 557 or visit the Facebook page YVR Ghost Train. This Halloween, dress up and embrace your inner Ghostbuster because there’s something strange on the Yarra Valley Railway Ghost Train.
Celebrate Halloween this year by taking a trip on the Yarra Valley Railway Ghost Train. 160363 PICTURE: DARRAN SEXTON, DLS Digital Arts.

The old-time X-Men? Miss Peregrine’s School For Peculiar Children (M) Starring: Eva Green, Samuel L. Jackson and Asa Butterfield MISS Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is a welcome return to form for the once-great director Tim Burton. Based on the novel by Ransom Riggs, this film follows Jake (Asa Butterfield), an adventurous young man who, after the mysterious death of his grandfather, discovers a magical school attended by children with superhuman abilities.
Big Eyes is an objectively better film, but Miss Peregrine’s is far more representative of Burton’s eccentric, Gothic style, and contains far more effort than much of Burton’s work over the past decade. Miss Peregrine’s is full of charming, well-developed characters, whose diverse abilities all factor into the funny, thrilling climax. The film is visually lush, drawing you deep into its macabre world, and the narrative blends science fiction and fantasy together very smoothly. Eva Green is captivating as ever in the title role,
the school’s prim, powerful headmistress, and Samuel L. Jackson is one of the year’s best, most terrifying villains as Mr Barron, the witty, selfsatisfied leader of the Wight antagonists. The only major problems with Miss Peregrine’s are how flat Butterfield is as a lead actor, and how woefully muddled the rules regarding the school time-loops and the Hollow monsters are. Overall, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is an engaging, visually stunning and highly entertaining comeback for Tim Burton. - Seth Hynes

Star batsman Daniel Mock will be sorely missed at Woori Yallock. 151849
Rain delays start to season By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION for cricketers FRUSTRATIONS around the Yarra Valley as significant early spring rains put a halt to ground preparations for the upcoming cricket season. The large amount of unprepared grounds across the Yarra Ranges Council forced an early cancellation of the first round of cricket for the Yarra Valley Cricket Association and their neighbouring associations. The 2016-'17 season shapes as an intriguing one in the YVCA’s top two grades, DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy, after both competitions experienced an extremely competitive and close fought season in 2015-'16. Woori Yallock will be the team to chase in DJ Strachan Shield as they seek a hat-trick of premierships in the top grade. The loss of reigning THR Drummond Medallist, and the competition’s leading batsman and bowler, Daniel Mock, will leave a considerable hole within their line-up. But the form of the likes of Ryan Smith, Simon Young, Jackson Wright and Ben Hayes at the peak of their powers, and a side full of consistent performers, still puts them at the head of the pack.
Hot on their heels will be the teams they conquered in the past two seasons, Healesville and Warburton-Millgrove. The Bloods rode a wave of great form post Christmas last season, which led them to a competitive showing in the grand final. The Bloods will be hoping they’ll be led well by Ash Hamer, whose form late last season drove the Bloods’ charge. Healesville have recruited some disciplined, experienced cricketers over recent seasons and, in addition to their developing youngsters, there is no reason why they won’t be around the mark this season. Warburton-Millgrove probably boast the most experienced team in the top flight and they will rely on this experience to expose their opposition, particularly in the challenging two-day format. Led by the talented Lever brothers - David, Daniel and Ben - the trio will be well supported by the likes of Liam Barnard in their quest to reach the pinnacle once again. Mount Evelyn and Yarra Junction fought it out to make finals last season and both teams will be keen to take the next step. Mount Evelyn regains the services of Kane Jones. His partnership with Gareth Fraser
will be crucial for both middle-order runs and match-winning wickets. The Rovers have a raft of talented teens searching for consistency. If a few of these can back up the efforts of Jones and Fraser, then they could surprise. Yarra Junction could prove to be the big movers in 2016-'17 as last season would’ve stung the Eagles. With Quinton Hodgkinson and Cam Spaulding atop their batting order, the Eagles can boast an explosive force early in their innings. Marcus Hottes proved a valuable foil for the pair last season as he rarely failed in keeping things together early. The keys for the Eagles are getting enough wickets and some late order runs to complement their stars. Rounding out the field of starters for DJ Strachan Shield are Seville and Yarra Glen. Seville were exposed last year with the loss of many key premiership heroes, but the young side weren’t disgraced as they put vital time into their youngsters. Matt Hadlum is a force with the ball. With several handy players with the ball, the Blues were able to restrict their opponents to chaseable totals, but their biggest challenge came with
making enough runs. All eyes will be on Yarra Glen as they rise back to the premier competition after over a decade in the lower grades. They have been quietly going about their business developing and building an impressive array of young talent and may surprise a few if they are underestimated. With former Victorian Bushranger Brendan Ricci at the helm, and with the experience of John Orren with the ball, then anything could happen with the competition’s ‘New Kids on the Block’. With a late finish to the football season, cricket has struggled to find some front page space. All clubs across the Yarra Valley are looking for keen cricketers of all ages and abilities. Season 2016-17 saw the introduction of Under 10s cricket, which proved quite popular on a Friday evening, while most clubs are looking to fill their ranks in the Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s ranks. Several clubs within the Yarra Valley also offer the entry-level program for beginning cricketers, Milo ‘In2Cricket’, which is aimed out our 5-8 year old cricketers which most clubs kick off in early November. There are many options for the se-
nior cricketers of all ages and abilities also; from the top grades to the social friendly lower grades and one-day grades to suit most cricketers. What better way to spend some father-son time, than to share a game of cricket on a Saturday afternoon. To keep everyone catered for, the Yarra Valley have established teams in the Over 40s, Over 50s and Over 60s, which opens the possibility for cricketers to return to the game they love, or an opportunity to start a childhood dream of playing cricket. Mount Evelyn Cricket Club also offers Over 40s and Over 60s teams. If playing isn’t your scene, there are plenty of other options including umpiring. The YVCA Umpires Association is always looking for more members to help assist in the running of the games on a Saturday. A great way to earn some money while staying involved in a great game. If you, or a member of your family, is interested in taking up the game of cricket, please contact the following, and you will be directed to your nearest club: Seniors - Chris Anderson (yvcascores@gmail.com), Juniors - Brent Watts (bwatts@stagsf.com), Veterans - Graeme Le Brocq (glebrocq@aapt. net.au), Umpires - Harry Marsh (topcat3765@gmail.com)

Murch wins in the wet WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY, 5 October: Stroke and M. McGrann ‘Bag-day’: On another inclement day, 19 committed golfers took to the course to do battle; and the course won! David Murch won the day with a Nett 74; a winning score he would readily admit would be disappointing for a golfer of his class. But, the course is wet and there is no ‘run’ occurring, even for the best drives. Still, well done to Murchy as 74 is a very creditable score in those conditions. Runner-up was Ian Garside, also with a 74, on a countback. Craig Brown also had a Nett 74. Balls went down to 75 only. NTPs went to Alan Johnston (3rd), Murchy (11th) and to Andrew McMath (12th). Saturday, 8 October: Par: One aspect of Warburton Golf Club is that all members can be proud of the array of young talent coming through the ranks (well done to Tony and Des). One of those young tyros won the Saturday competition this week. ‘Young’ Angus Smith has only played in competition for these last couple of months and yesterday he showed his potential with a sensational round that ended with a +6 on his card. The day’s runner-up is at the other end of the scale. Steuart Hawke is one of the ‘elder statesmen’ and is one of the most consistent players in the club. He plays off a real golfer’s handicap of 11 and he smashed that by 4 on Saturday, obviously with a +4. Balls went down to -1. The NTPs went to Angus Smith (3rd), Willo (5th), Ben Lord (9th) and to Ray ‘Happy’ Gilmore (12th).

Motoring Corolla, car of the people TOYOTA’S Corolla will achieve a major milestone this month as the world’s most popular car celebrates its 50th anniversary. Introduced to Japan in October 1966 as the ‘people’s car’, cumulative global sales of Corolla have grown to more than 44 million. The global sales tally equates to about 100 cars being built and sold every hour throughout the past half a century, or one every 36 seconds. Australia has featured prominently in Corolla’s history since local sales began in 1967 - the destination for the first Corolla exports, the site of the first factory outside Japan to build this popular model, and the scene of its earliest international motorsport success at Bathurst. Corolla has been Australia’s bestselling car in each of the past three years and cumulative local sales have now reached more than 1.35 million cars. Corolla, which became the world’s best-selling automotive nameplate in 1997, accounts for one in five vehicles sold in Toyota’s 79-year history and a slightly higher proportion in Australia. Currently produced at 16 plants worldwide, more than one million units have been sold each year since 2002. Last year, a total of 3670 Corollas
were sold every day across more than 150 countries and regions. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said local motorists had made Corolla the company’s top-selling model in this country. “Australians have always loved Corolla because it has continually captured their imagination by being affordable, fuel-efficient, dependable and fun to drive through each of its 11 generations,“ Mr Cramb said. One month after Corolla’s debut, the first export shipment of 15 cars left Japan bound for Australia in November 1966 and went on sale here the following year. From 1968 until 1999, more than 666,000 Corolla cars were built in Toyota factories at Port Melbourne, Dandenong and Altona in Melbourne. Corolla has a long and successful motorsport record in Australia, helping to forge the car’s reputation as durable, reliable and fun to drive. Class victories at the Bathurst 500 enduro in 1968 and 1969 effectively put Corolla on the motorsport map. It won a further eight consecutive class victories at Bathurst from 1985'92 and compiled a string of touringcar victories and success in rallying. Corolla’s sales have grown from
strength to strength in Australia. It took more than eight years for the first 100,000 Corollas to be sold after its introduction in 1967. The most recent 100,000 sales took just over two years and four months. Annual sales reached 20,000 for the first time in 1975, climbed through the 30,000 mark in 2000 and topped the 40,000 milestone in 2005. Corolla became a ‘millionaire’ in Australia in September 2007 with total sales moving into seven figures four months after the model’s 40th anniversary in Australia. Originating from the Latin term for “crown of flowers“, the name Corolla was chosen in the hope the vehicle would bloom in the automotive market. And that’s exactly what it did: within three years the first-generation Corolla became the top-selling vehicle in Japan, and sales quickly spread around the world. In-depth analysis and the incorporation of customer feedback have been integral to the development of each new generation of Corolla. As a result, Toyota has built on the philosophy behind the creation of the first Corolla - a car of superior quality, durability and reliability (QDR) - with a determination to exceed customer
The Toyota Corolla remains as popular as ever. 160165 expectations in every key area highlighted by their feedback. The result is that today’s Corolla hatch and sedan inherit 50 years of Corolla DNA in always evolving and being designed to meet the diverse needs of a global customer base. They feature prestigious exterior designs, a strong focus on sensory quality, roomy interiors and high levels of technology and safety equipment.
Above all, Corolla continues to build on the model’s legendary QDR with significantly enhanced quality in every aspect of its design and engineering, while continuing to represent impressive value for money. The 50-year history of the everevolving Corolla, filled with examples of technology and quality improvement, is emblematic of Toyota’s continued efforts to anticipate customer needs and build ever-better cars.
Drivers need excise advice The Transurban study also highlights the fact that so little of what motorists pay goes into building transport infrastructure, and that over time, the amount of money available to the government from fuel excise will fall. In 2013-'14, road-related taxes and charges reached almost $28 billion. Despite this, motorists are getting a very poor return on their investment. Over recent decades, only 47 per cent of the tax paid by motorists at the bowser has found its way into the federal land transport infrastructure budget. By 2020, this figure will be down to 27 per cent. “We already have a massive shortfall in transport infrastructure funding and this will only worsen as the amount of fuel excise collected drops due to improved vehicle efficiency and the increased use of electric vehicles,” Mr Bradley said.
“The AAA’s Transport Affordability Index shows the average Australian household is already paying around $17,000 a year for transport. It’s important therefore that governments find new and fairer ways to ensure we can fund the transport systems Australia will need for the 21st century. A great place to start is by ensuring Australians understand exactly how much they already pay in fuel excise.” The AAA believes a two-stage funding reform approach is required that would first secure a dedicated and stable source of revenue to be directed to land transport projects and second, to examine, develop and implement options for broader land transport market reform. On this basis, the AAA calls for the Australian Government to: Set up a transport infrastructure fund, with a guaranteed minimum of 50 per cent of net fuel excise paid
·
Australians are more open to considering changes to the way we pay for the transport, the study said. 159245
·
into the fund to be spent on land transport infrastructure. This policy is supported by around 90 per cent of Australians surveyed by the AAA. Implement Infrastructure Australia’s recommendation for a public inquiry into transport market reform and how
it moves in the long term to a system that replaces current taxes with a fairer road user pricing mechanism. This inquiry is the critical next step in developing a funding model capable of building the transport system Australia needs for the 21st century.
1187559-RC24-15
A NEW study by Transurban which tested consumer reactions to different road charging options has reinforced the need for the Australian Government to advise motorists how much excise they pay on every tank of fuel. The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) chief executive Michael Bradley said: “This important study by Transurban shows Australians are more open to considering changes to the way we pay for the transport we all need, once they know how much they currently pay in Australian Government motoring taxes. “The Transurban study again demonstrates that the majority of Australian motorists are unaware they pay around 40 cents in excise on every litre of fuel. That’s why the AAA is calling for the Australian Government to disclose the amount of excise paid on fuel dockets in the same way GST is currently displayed.”

Motoring Blaze your own trail time THE new Holden Trailblazer is set to become the 4x4 SUV of choice for even more families, with an array of upgrades to technology, drivability, design and safety. Previously known as Colorado 7, the new Trailblazer has received a new name and a new design to match, providing customers with premium styling and a range of high-tech features, complemented by a refined and comfortable driving experience, without sacrificing its off-road credentials. Holden’s Executive Director of Sales, Peter Keley, said with its significant engineering, feature and design upgrades, combined with competitive pricing, Trailblazer would shake up the 4x4 SUV market. “The new Trailblazer blends premium styling with impressive in-car technology, both in terms of connectivity and active safety features,” Mr Keley said. “The 2017 Trailblazer looks great and drives better than ever. “To be able to add all of the content we have without adding significantly to the price is a real win for our customers. “We’re also focused on providing support and peace of mind for our customers throughout the life of their vehicle with our lifetime capped price service program and our Australianbased customer care.” Despite a long list of technology introductions and design upgrades, the
the acclaimed 2017 Holden Colorado, Trailblazer blends 4x4 capability with refined and confident on-road performance. Holden’s Lead Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, said customers’ lifestyles were central to the engineering objectives for the new Trailblazer. “Trailblazer is such a versatile car, used for anything from weekday grocery runs to weekend 4x4 driving adventures, so we had to ensure it performed in a variety of situations and terrains,” Mr Trubiani said. The extensive engineering improvements include a revised steering calibration, co-developed between Holden and Brazilian engineers providing a more precise steering feel thanks to a faster steering rack ratio and less turns lock-to-lock. Other key developments in Trailblazer’s chassis include a revised set of engine, transmission and body mounts to provide a more refined and composed ride, in addition to a new final drive ratio (only in Australia) on manual transmission Trailblazer which will improve drive quality, particularly while towing. Driver confidence is furthered with the variable steering efforts in Trailblazer’s electric power steering system, allowing it to handle more nimbly and drive like a car. The 2017 Holden Trailblazer will be on sale at Holden dealers nationwide from early this month.
The Holden Trailblazer is set to turn heads. 160171 2017 Trailblazer pricing remains largely unchanged from its predecessor. Spring means a time to race By Dean Thompson THIS Saturday night, 15 October, motorsport fans are set to head through the Black Spur and into the Murrindindi Shire on their way to the Alexandra and District Speedway Club. There, race fans will watch fast and furious dirt track action at the venue that will this season hold two of the biggest Victorian titles of the season: the Street Stocks and the Standard Saloons on the speedway proper, plus the popular and entertaining Crash and Bash Victorian title through the dirt circuit dog leg section of the track. Early entries for the first event of the season suggest a couple of Standard Saloon competitors from the states North East are heading into the venue to get early runs into their engines and some track time at the title venue, while some new competitors to Street Stocks have entered in order to get laps under the belt early in the season. Alexandra Club members Nick Chrystie, Jason Meakins, Allan Poole and Tegan Bullard will need to bring their best
form to compete with Corowa racer Brendan Eames, who last season had a great qualifying run at the Victorian title and Wangaratta’s Andrew Robl who can win against strong competition and is searching for consistency this season and a strong title result at Alexandra later in the year. Lenny Bates and Debbie Jones lead the local members in the Street Stocks with Bates a serious contender for a number of big race results this season fresh off a trip to Western Australia where he started his season. The ever-popular national division Junior Sedans for 10-year-olds up to 17 years of age once again looks set to have a large field on most occasions this season. Beveridge youngster Caleb Lincoln, Ricky Cornwall, Tim Gorski from Epping, Kilmore racer Courtney Meakins and Kasey Garlick are among the strong contenders. Sports Sedans feature race cars with race tyres and powerfully modified race engines; the field has attracted a mixture of LS1 powered cars and V6 machinery. Kershaw, Dale Smith, Luke Fallon, Andrew Jordan the current Victoria # 2 driver and Matt Chiminello are among proven competitors in the state scene that should make for entertaining racing with a winner difficult to pick. Ladies Racing and Victorian Speedway Council Junior Sedans are also slated to compete in what should be a great nights racing to kick off the very busy season that also includes the Crash and Bash Victorian title later in the season, the annual 100 Lap Derby and the 3 Hour Enduro before the season is finished. Competition begins at 4pm on Saturday 15 October at Gordon Street Alexandra with adult tickets for this meeting costing $20, aged and invalid pensioners $15. Children between the ages of 10 and 16 are $10 with a family ticket of two adults and three children above the age of 10 and 16 can enter for $60. For contact at the club, call 0425 756 312 in business hours during the week and on race day until 7pm.
